Latest / Deadly Intentions / Richard Ramirez: How the Night Stalker Terrorized Los Angeles
Transcript
- 0:00He's. What changed Los Angeles?
- 0:04There's a stretch there for about, let's say the better part
- 0:08of like a year and a half where people were careful.
- 0:11His conduct assessed that level of panic.
- 0:14I mean, he had LA on its ear. So let's take it back to the
- 0:19beginning. He was raised in Texas, very
- 0:25abusive home. Father was an alcoholic,
- 0:27physically very abusive and as a child he had two injuries.
- 0:32He sustained 1 as a 2 year old, two injuries to his head.
- 0:38The second one was even more significant because it resulted
- 0:41him being blacked out for a little while and as a 5 year old
- 0:44when you sustain a head injury it often times will have some
- 0:48developmental impact. Especially A5.
- 0:51Yeah, it does. And so when?
- 0:52Your brain's still developing. Yeah, yeah, no.
- 0:54So he ended up suffering a I don't know, the medical term is
- 1:00like some kind of temporal type injury which as an adult will
- 1:04manifest into often times hyper religiosity.
- 1:10Which I thought was an interesting aspect of this guy's
- 1:13background because later on he goes all in on Satanism.
- 1:16Like all in. Now, were the injuries to his
- 1:19head from a from a abusive, abusive father or was?
- 1:23One this one of no. The injuries were childhood
- 1:27injuries. Like playing ball with the kids
- 1:29or falling out. One of them, one of them was a
- 1:30swing related interest. OK, yeah.
- 1:32So I mean, it's not as if. Kids being kids.
- 1:34Kids, kids being kids Now, of course, he was raised in a
- 1:36horrific circumstances. His father was very abusive,
- 1:40which led to him by the time he was 12 years old, began spending
- 1:45less time at home and more time with an older cousin.
- 1:51Right now, the older cousin, his name was Miguel, He in English
- 1:56went by Michael and the older cousin was someone had a lot of
- 2:00respect in the family because he had been, you know, he was home
- 2:02from Vietnam Special forces. Green Beret.
- 2:05He was married. Oh yeah, he was married, Yeah.
- 2:08Yeah, so I think, I think Miguel was married, Special Forces
- 2:12former vet. Came home, yeah, someone who had
- 2:15a little bit so. Your family would be like hey
- 2:16this is a good dude. Well, you know, to a 12 year
- 2:18old. Yeah, that's Superman.
- 2:20Yeah, it's right, right. Unfortunately, Miguel was almost
- 2:26as bad as Pops as Richard. Wow.
- 2:29Not physically abusive with Ramirez.
- 2:34He had engaged in especially with war crimes in Vietnam.
- 2:38OK this is unaliving civilians mutilating Vietnam Vietnamese
- 2:44women and he brought home photos of it.
- 2:48So he's conditioning a 12 year old to under to for him.
- 2:53He associates outrageous levels of violence towards females for
- 2:59the purposes of sexual gratification.
- 3:00It's solidified by Miguel. By by.
- 3:03Yeah. And he's not like the guy
- 3:04brought home. And of course he would boast
- 3:06about how he was, you know, unaliving civilians and the
- 3:09thrill he would receive. And he even brought home
- 3:11shrunken heads. So the kids seeing the photos,
- 3:15the kids seeing the head, the guy he idolizes.
- 3:18But this is like his father figure, someone whom everybody
- 3:21in the community respect. And this propaganda is being.
- 3:24Fed, especially grooming him. Right to Ramirez, who at this
- 3:28point is trying to get away from a bad situation at home and is
- 3:32is is shipped off to Uncle Uncle Miguel.
- 3:35And little do we know that Uncle Miguel is an absolute monster.
- 3:39Culminating he's now he'd moved in with the Miguel family of
- 3:42his. At 11 or 12?
- 3:43And so he's there for a couple of years.
- 3:45Now, was he sent to Uncle Miguel because his mom and dad couldn't
- 3:49handle him? No, it was more of he just
- 3:51gravitated there and, you know, he had a lot of siblings and
- 3:55this was a poor family that came from Mexico.
- 3:57So it's essentially 1 less mouth to feed.
- 4:00And so he's a 13 year old living with Miguel, and Miguel and his
- 4:06wife get into an altercation during a fight in the kitchen
- 4:10and a 13 year old boy watches his Green Beret cousin pull out
- 4:16a firearm and unalive the wife right there in the kitchen.
- 4:22What? Right there, right there.
- 4:24So the Vietnam vet, Army Ranger, Green Beret, whatever he was
- 4:29special force, well respected. He unalives Richard Ramirez's
- 4:35aunt, if you will. Or cousin or cousin?
- 4:38Cousin in law. You know, yeah, essentially
- 4:40right there in front of him, right there in the kitchen.
- 4:42Now, did Miguel ever get in trouble for that?
- 4:45He did. He was, he got prosecuted for
- 4:47it. He was LED, he was sentenced
- 4:51under an insanity type of a scenario.
- 4:54He ends up doing four years. Probably his service was
- 4:58considered all of that. Yeah, certainly.
- 5:00So for the four years when he does that, where does where does
- 5:04Ramirez end up back? He goes to live with his sister.
- 5:07OK. So now.
- 5:09He's like a, he's just like a hand me down rag with just keeps
- 5:12getting handed down right. I mean, look, it obviously
- 5:15doesn't justify anything that's come back then later on, but you
- 5:18can. See them building the monster.
- 5:21You can see that this, this was a it was he was doomed from the
- 5:24get go. Yeah, I mean, and it is his
- 5:26fault because everything you do inevitably is your fault.
- 5:29And I'm not like you said, that does not warrant what he did.
- 5:33But you can see the pieces of the puzzle starting to get put
- 5:38together. You know, this isn't come from a
- 5:41a man and a woman who have a successful relationship and they
- 5:44love their child and they go to church on Sunday and he's got a
- 5:47good job and the mom's a happy homemaker and the kids get off
- 5:49to school every day and a kid. He's raising a frictionless
- 5:52environment now. He doesn't.
- 5:53Not, not this. This is my dad is, you know,
- 5:56boom. I get shipped to my uncle.
- 5:58He's a war guy that unalived a bunch of mutilated shrunken
- 6:03heads. And the whole night.
- 6:05And then I watch him unalive my his wife.
- 6:09And then now I get sent down to the sister.
- 6:11The sister. The sister's husband is a sexual
- 6:17weirdo. OK for kids.
- 6:19No, no, not necessarily for kids.
- 6:21No, not he. He wasn't for children.
- 6:22He's just kind of a sexual perv. Perv to the point where he's now
- 6:26he's going his his thing was watching couples having engaging
- 6:31in intimate behavior, intimate conduct without them knowing
- 6:35about it. So like a voyeur.
- 6:36Kind of like a yeah. And so now he starts taking a
- 6:39kid with him. Like he introduces the kid.
- 6:42To his to his kink. To his thing.
- 6:46And the kids like what, 14 at? This point, he's 14 years old,
- 6:4915 years old, 16 years old. And so it's like, and on top of
- 6:52all, it is, you know, Miguel was someone who enjoyed getting
- 6:59high. OK.
- 7:00And so he introduces the kid, in addition to all of his madness,
- 7:05he starts letting the kid getting high.
- 7:08So of course, it starts out with, you know, just smoking
- 7:10weed and then it but it escalates.
- 7:12So now he's on this path where he goes from Crazy Miguel, so
- 7:19now crazy Roberto, who's taking him on these perv missions.
- 7:24High. Yeah, the kids getting high and
- 7:27now he's engaging in petty juvenile criminal behavior.
- 7:30OK, and so that starts his life of crime.
- 7:36Sure, And then he ends up getting a job working at a look
- 7:39a Holiday Inn in Texas. He's from the El Paso area and
- 7:44he's he has the keys to the hotel rooms.
- 7:48So now he's able. To Ramirez gets a job.
- 7:51Working at the local. Holiday, and probably it's
- 7:53maintenance janitor. So he's, but he's got the, he's
- 7:56going in and out of the people's rooms stealing.
- 8:00So the weather down at the pool or down there?
- 8:01Sure, he starts petty theft. He starts doing like going in
- 8:06and watching the women while they're sleeping but not acting
- 8:11upon his interest, But you can see where it's going.
- 8:14There was unconfirmed reports he was never charged for it, but
- 8:18there was allegedly a couple of incidences involving assaults of
- 8:21that kind of a nature at the hotel in Texas but the women
- 8:25didn't pursue. Right.
- 8:28But he's moving along in that direction.
- 8:32He's headed down that trail. Yes, and so he ends up getting
- 8:35in trouble 'cause he's too good junkie running around and
- 8:39stealing cars and breaking in, ends up getting in trouble.
- 8:42Juvenile hall type of scenario. He gets ultimately released and
- 8:47he makes the decision he's going to move to California from
- 8:51Texas. We do.
- 8:53We always have to deal with these these.
- 8:54These you Californians always got these crazy Texans, these.
- 8:57Crazy Texans come to California and just wreck things.
- 9:00And so he decides to come to California.
- 9:03Now, is he like 18 at this point?
- 9:0422 So he's 22. Yes, and this is 1982.
- 9:10OK, he did a little time for some bullshit.
- 9:12Some bullshit stuff. And so now he's starting
- 9:15overcomes to California and now he he although the bulk of his
- 9:18activity later on in his Senate room in Los Angeles, he
- 9:20initially starts off in San Francisco.
- 9:22OK. And you know, I, I'm from the LA
- 9:26area, I wasn't not too familiar with San Francisco from the
- 9:291980s. I spent the better part of two
- 9:31decades going to federal court in and out of San Francisco.
- 9:34And so I I'm familiar with the city as it developed, but as
- 9:38beautiful as San Francisco is, there's a real seedy part of
- 9:40town. Yeah, Chinatown or Tenderloin.
- 9:43Tenderloin. And of course he's low level
- 9:47criminal tranky junkie. Well yes, because at this point
- 9:51he's gone from smoking weed to abusing LSD to inhaling coke to
- 10:02injecting it. So anyhow, he's living in the
- 10:05tenderloin, engaging in this degenerate activity.
- 10:08Inject injecting drugs. And you know those, the
- 10:12Tenderloin, I believe was similar to what downtown LA
- 10:16today. Downtown LA is very different
- 10:17than what it was. When you were there. 40 years
- 10:19ago when I was in high school and so, you know, you had like a
- 10:22lot of transient hotels, you know, like 20 bucks a day or
- 10:25whatever. It's just really the drugs
- 10:29society. And so he's staying in that
- 10:31particular area and this animal and this only came to light in
- 10:352009. That's the.
- 10:37Stuff you're going to tell me right now.
- 10:38This is the. This is.
- 10:39The stuff you're telling me right now didn't come out until
- 10:4109. On one of them, the first one
- 10:43because before they thought that his first Night Stalker victim
- 10:49happened in June of 84. In reality, it predates that
- 10:55little 9 year old Vietnamese or Vietnamese ethnic Chinese girl.
- 11:01How did they find out about it in O 9 compared to 82?
- 11:04Because he he was living in the building or he was staying at
- 11:07the little transient hotel type of thing.
- 11:10And the. How was this genuinely V1 like?
- 11:14Was this victim? To the extent temporally,
- 11:18chronologically. Yeah, chronologically, yeah.
- 11:20So chronologically, regardless of when they found out about it,
- 11:23which it was O 9, this was. They didn't tie it to her, to
- 11:27him. After they were able to
- 11:30forensically tie it to him. So this would be and a lot of
- 11:33people don't talk about V1 meaning victim one would.
- 11:37It was in Tenderloin. His first victim was in San
- 11:40Francisco. She was, you know, little 8 year
- 11:42old 9 year old girl. Oh, terrible.
- 11:44It's terrible. This guy's horrible.
- 11:45He escalated from petty auto theft to gruesome, sadistic,
- 11:54sick of a you. Know of children?
- 11:57Of children was the 1st. While assaulting them, yes, you
- 12:01know, like. In the worst way?
- 12:02In the worst possibly way. And then?
- 12:04We can't necessarily say it, but if you can think about it, guys,
- 12:07there's a way to assault person that you're taking their
- 12:10innocence away and that's what we're.
- 12:12Talking about yeah, he he he he violated the children he then.
- 12:15Killed then UN alive. And then not just just
- 12:18gruesomely butchery. That's one that's.
- 12:22The first one and so then and you know he did it.
- 12:25This is going to show you this is like something that the guy
- 12:28from Alaska would have never done.
- 12:30He did it the the the last one his where he got backed up.
- 12:33But this is he started off like this like this is just an
- 12:35impulsive I'm going to just grab some person's kid.
- 12:39So then he leaves San Francisco, come down to Los Angeles and
- 12:44same situation. He's living in downtown CD area
- 12:47transient hotels, you know, and at this point there's a he snaps
- 12:53a little bit because, well, obviously he snapped.
- 12:55He's but he's like essentially sustaining on Doctor Pepper
- 13:01chocolate, right? He's he's not bathing.
- 13:04He's like he, he's, he's like shedding his humanity, right.
- 13:09And so he, he's just a real dirty, dirty.
- 13:12His teeth are falling apart. The guy's just, you know, you,
- 13:16you have to maintain some base level of maintenance base.
- 13:19Level yeah, of I mean, at least brush your teeth every.
- 13:21Day. Yeah, that's all gone.
- 13:23So a daily shower and brushing your teeth once a day is at the
- 13:27minimum, right? What you need to do?
- 13:29So now, with respect to the the first of what became known as
- 13:33the Night Stalkers events, he's now in Los Angeles and not too
- 13:38far from Dodger Stadium, in fact.
- 13:39Right. And he, it's essentially A
- 13:42burglary gone bad. He breaks into the home and
- 13:47again, there's not much breaking.
- 13:48And people had their windows open.
- 13:49People are just fighting glass doors there.
- 13:50They had little screens, you know, right.
- 13:52And pop a screen. Pop a screen, you come I.
- 13:54Had a fan on at night. That's that's the extent of his
- 13:57and realistically, you know, I've been to LA you in in a lot
- 14:02of instances it does cool down at night where you could you
- 14:05could sure you could sleep under those conditions.
- 14:07Yeah, you know, and. But it's not the safest.
- 14:10What? It was a different era.
- 14:12He's what changed Los Angeles because there's a stretch there
- 14:16for about, let's say the better part of like a year and a half
- 14:20where people were terrified. Like I remember being 15 years
- 14:24old and my mom like, I'm not going out to the cars.
- 14:26My dad company are out to the car and.
- 14:29And did you when you were going to see one thing as we go
- 14:33through this? And there's a lot of people that
- 14:35could potentially cover the Night Stalker.
- 14:38But you lived it, Meaning you were in Los Angeles when he was
- 14:44wanted for these as a little kid, as a kid. 14 middle school.
- 14:50Sophomore year, high school and then so and in a geographical
- 14:55area that was not too far. From here, close in proximity.
- 14:58So was there your parents who are, you know, middle class
- 15:02parents, good parents? Were they like, listen, Pete,
- 15:05we're we're shutting the windows tonight, like, like.
- 15:07Well, no, my parents had made a a series of financial
- 15:15miscalculations, and so this was personally 84 was unquestionably
- 15:21the most challenging year financially my my family ever
- 15:23for. Your mom and dad, yes.
- 15:24And so we were like living in an apartment.
- 15:29And so it was four of us, 2 bedroom apartment.
- 15:31I'm sharing a room with my brother.
- 15:32And so it was like you didn't necessarily worry about him
- 15:36attacking. Were you guys up a little bit?
- 15:38No, it was a base level. I was gonna say because if
- 15:40you're up like on the 3rd floor, you can think you can almost
- 15:42live, right? But no base level.
- 15:44You're very vulnerable. You're vulnerable.
- 15:45That's why my mom's like, I'm, you know, I gotta go to the car
- 15:48with your mom. But did you still leave the
- 15:49windows open at? Night.
- 15:50No, no. But we had air because it was
- 15:52an. Apartment OK, so you had air,
- 15:53yes, then, but but those that there were probably people that
- 15:57didn't have air that either got air or they closed their windows
- 16:01at night because this guy was he was boogie.
- 16:03He was the boogie man in LA, wasn't he?
- 16:05Sure, he really made this guy out to be a boogie man.
- 16:09His conduct assessed that level of right panic assessment.
- 16:12He had LA on its ear. I mean, he had. 1985 was a year
- 16:17unlike because he began in 84, but 85 is when he went on his
- 16:22spree. And you'll notice like he's
- 16:23operating primarily in the warmer time of the year.
- 16:26And you know, people think it's like LA is not all beaches.
- 16:28When you get out into the valleys it gets hot as fuck.
- 16:31So. And so he if you're targeting in
- 16:35June, July and this is at night, people had all the windows open
- 16:37that's. When yeah, that's when he was.
- 16:39Whereas November through February it.
- 16:43Gets cold and. Absolutely.
- 16:44Then you're going to have the windows closed, you know, So
- 16:47you're right, you know, May through August.
- 16:49September. October's are beautiful.
- 16:51Exactly. So no.
- 16:52And so the first one is a woman named Jenny Vinkow.
- 16:59This guy, he breaks into her apartment.
- 17:01She's a 79 year old woman. So each so so it's Grandma.
- 17:06Like she knows. Yeah.
- 17:07It's like she poses. No.
- 17:08Like she can't even pose a physical challenge.
- 17:11Like, OK, like you're a scumbag. You're going to steal whatever.
- 17:13Any and she can't really even be anything that you'd would be
- 17:16turned on. Well, I guess we can't really
- 17:17see what he's turned on by because of the children.
- 17:19But like, I mean, that's both ends of the spectrum of
- 17:22sickness. Sickness, sickness.
- 17:24And does he assault her too? Yes.
- 17:27And so he brutally attacks her, breaks into the house he doesn't
- 17:35have, he doesn't like this is the opportunity.
- 17:36He's the antithesis of everybody else.
- 17:39He's just grabbing. She goes in, goes in the kitchen
- 17:41drawer, grabs a knife and starts, you know, stabbing the
- 17:46woman. He brutally assaults her like
- 17:49that and physically violates her.
- 17:53I heard to the point I'm almost decapitating.
- 17:55It was so. Gruesome.
- 17:59Gruesome. He leaves.
- 18:01He's covered in blood. Like you can't.
- 18:04Right, you can't. Decapitate someone and not this.
- 18:06He's literally covered in blood driving a stolen car and he's
- 18:09taking driving. He passes right by a police
- 18:12officer, But of course they weren't Privy to what was going
- 18:14on. But it was like later on when he
- 18:16recounts his story, like, yeah, I drove right by the.
- 18:18Pass by LAPD. Covered in blood and, and so he
- 18:23and prior to this, in addition to getting involved with his
- 18:28drug use, he'd gotten involved with Satanism.
- 18:32Oh, OK. And this is really what
- 18:36obviously the situation itself was bad, but then he, as the
- 18:39story progresses, starts engaging in conduct that
- 18:43frightened the living hell out of people because he's tethering
- 18:46it to these demonic presentations and the hyper
- 18:52religiosity that we were talking about earlier from sustaining
- 18:56those head injuries. This is where it comes in.
- 18:58There's plenty of religious people and there's plenty of
- 19:01fundamentalist religious people, but they're not chopping off 79
- 19:03year old women. 'S heads no.
- 19:05And so he's internalized it to a degree where he's behaving as if
- 19:12he's friends with Lucifer. Like this is what Lucifer wants.
- 19:17And so he's. Which intensifies.
- 19:20Intensify out factor. That's why you see such a brutal
- 19:23attack. Now, did he as we chronological
- 19:29chronologically go through, did it always end up as gruesome as
- 19:34Grandma for the most part? Like was he like?
- 19:37Well, there were. Well, later on when he breaks in
- 19:40and stumbles upon a firearm. Who used a firearm like this guy
- 19:44has no forethought. He's the complete opposite of
- 19:49D'Angelo. Complete opposite of you know,
- 19:52the the Hoyerman and then last weeks with keys.
- 19:56This this guy is a had none of these people been home, he'd
- 20:01just ransacked and taken off, stole the watch and.
- 20:04Got the hell out of there. Yeah, and you know, I in
- 20:07preparing these profiles, you know, I go back, I pull all the
- 20:10newspaper articles from the time from that period and you know,
- 20:15got this misconception like this guy was some kind of criminal
- 20:17genius or masterminds. Like what are you talking about?
- 20:20You know, it was a pre digital world, right?
- 20:24LAPD homicide detective has no access to a robbery database in
- 20:29Ventura County like unwittingly he was able to Swart many of the
- 20:34efforts of law enforcement because he was transient and he
- 20:38engaged in this course of conduct over the course of five
- 20:40different counties without any centralized database at this
- 20:45point and. We still lived in the analog.
- 20:47World, yeah. And there was at this point,
- 20:48like there still wasn't even a computerized database that you
- 20:54could access fingerprints. From like an NCIC or anything
- 20:57like there was nothing of that. Manner.
- 20:59And so it was, you know, again, a very different world.
- 21:02I feel like Pete, in today's world, in today's
- 21:06digitalization, I can have anything to you in a matter of a
- 21:09second. If you're a cop in LA and I'm a
- 21:11cop in Indiana, I can literally, literally something to you in
- 21:13one minute or less. I feel like that a lot of the
- 21:18bad guys we talked about here in Deadly Intentions would not be
- 21:22able to do what they did in today's digital world, that the
- 21:27technology actually helped them go through all of this nonsense
- 21:31because the digitalization hadn't most of them got caught
- 21:37once the world. Caught.
- 21:38Yeah, once it became digital, right?
- 21:40Yeah, he was. He was able to outrun the
- 21:42TeleTech machines. Essentially Exactly.
- 21:44So we got Jeannie, yes. And he takes a break from June.
- 21:49Like of course he's still engaged in his petty criminal
- 21:51activity, but the nest events of significance.
- 21:54Fast forward the next February. Horrific circumstance.
- 21:58That month he harms two children.
- 22:02They start snatching up kids. 6 year old girl, then 9 year old
- 22:08girl. Now these girls just on the side
- 22:11of the road, walking home from school, he.
- 22:15The, the, the state of California never prosecuted, did
- 22:19not prosecute the abductions of the minors.
- 22:23They already had them on 13 adults, adults.
- 22:26And they're not going to subject the, the young girls now, you
- 22:31know, they were children at the time these events happened.
- 22:33Now have to come in and testify as an adult.
- 22:35He had a lot of media coverage on this case, like they're not
- 22:38going to. But these aren't unaliving.
- 22:40These are kids. These are.
- 22:41These are assaults. These are essays.
- 22:43Or he yes, he's violating them physically right and so he does
- 22:47the 2 girls they're not tying it yet this So what happened to
- 22:52previous to. Grandma, they're not.
- 22:54They haven't tied the two. There isn't a narrative yet.
- 22:57Underage sexual assaults of the children.
- 22:59Of the children. To the guy who killed the 79
- 23:02year. Old Yeah, the near decapitation
- 23:03with so. We're still, they're still, they
- 23:05still don't have a bearing on who we're dealing with here.
- 23:08Sure. And look, he abducted him, did
- 23:12what he did, and he freed him. Right.
- 23:15That's a different psychological profile than.
- 23:18What he did to the 9 year old in Sam Fran.
- 23:20Well, that's they still had no idea about yes.
- 23:23So now Fast forward now to a month later.
- 23:28It is now mid March. And this individual was OK.
- 23:31This is the double strike they call it.
- 23:33And so in this particular incident, this this is this is
- 23:37this is terrible. This is just insanity.
- 23:39So, so Pete, Fast forward to March, I think it was the 17th
- 23:43or something. I think he gets two in one day.
- 23:45Yes, he he ultimately developed an MO where and this was the
- 23:54first time he I believe utilized it.
- 23:57I don't think he did it consciously.
- 23:59I think he just stumbled upon something.
- 24:01So in the context of his events with this woman, he does his
- 24:08normal. He's going to break in, he's
- 24:09going to burglarize, he's going to assault her, but she's got a
- 24:13roommate. So he unalives the man.
- 24:15He unalives. That's the Dale guy.
- 24:17Dale, individual named Dale. He shoots the man, shoots her.
- 24:23OK, but she survives. She survives.
- 24:26He flees after he's done with his activity.
- 24:30Flees, tries to car Jack. Another woman shoots her.
- 24:35She shoots her. She touches car Jack.
- 24:36The vehicle pulls her out of the car, shoots her, doesn't take
- 24:42the car please on foot. How could he not catch this guy
- 24:49doing all this? Makes absolutely.
- 24:53I mean this is. Makes no sense.
- 24:54None. I mean, this is LA.
- 24:56This is. Yeah, but I mean a.
- 24:58Million eyeballs. Yeah, and it's a it's it's you
- 25:00know, you these are just civilians and you shoot a woman
- 25:04at her plays you UN alive. Her, her roommate, boyfriend,
- 25:08whatever the nature of the relationship was, they were
- 25:10living together. Then you just snatch up a woman
- 25:12on the street and pull her out of a car.
- 25:16And so. How did the woman from the
- 25:19carjacking end up? Unalived also a few days later,
- 25:24he goes. Yeah, literally 10 days.
- 25:26Later, just there's an interim event a few days later he
- 25:30abducts another child, 8 year old girl, similar circumstance,
- 25:37violates the poor child but then unalives her.
- 25:41What? Come on this guys just and now
- 25:46you can see he's. He's serial.
- 25:48He's. Deeply into whatever.
- 25:52And. It might be the satanic Yeah
- 25:54this guys horrible. Because he's going from grandma
- 25:57to kids. That's.
- 25:58The roommate one of the reason why it was difficult for the
- 26:00authorities. Not only is he jumping around
- 26:02from because. He didn't have a pattern.
- 26:04That's right, he doesn't so. They couldn't say, listen, all
- 26:0729 year old brunettes watch out because that's what he goes for.
- 26:10Because this guy had gone from a kid in San Francisco to a
- 26:15grandma in LA to violating a couple kids to a male roommate,
- 26:22to a woman driving a car and now a couple kids.
- 26:26So like you're, I mean, you literally don't have a profile
- 26:29on the guy, do you? As far as who he's going to hit
- 26:31next? Yeah.
- 26:33No, no, that's just. Men, women, grandma, children.
- 26:36So far we got every one. Of those and so from the
- 26:39authorities perspective, I'm sure they're not that's of
- 26:41course they haven't associated all of this together because
- 26:44when the the FBI behavioral profiling unit, they've got a
- 26:49technical term for it. That's especially what they do.
- 26:52They break it down along the organized disorganized.
- 26:55Well, part of that profile is a victimology type of a scenario
- 27:00like like, you know, hop a lot of Latinos with big tits and a
- 27:02big ass then that's sure. Well, he has Jim.
- 27:05That's, you know. He's so far over the road, you
- 27:07can't build a profile. That's right.
- 27:09So, Pete, let me ask you a question.
- 27:10When did the city of LA finally say, OK Houston, we got a
- 27:15problem? Well, at this point they were
- 27:17calling him the Valley Intruder. OK.
- 27:20It wasn't until that summer where he gets the name.
- 27:23The Night Stalker, which but they at this point though from
- 27:27grandma to the two kids violated to the carjacking to the male
- 27:33roommate to the two unliving of the children via an assault.
- 27:38Had they at that point, Pete put that all on the same guy Did
- 27:42like, were they still No, no. So even up now, we're 4 deep,
- 27:48we're 4 deep and they're still not necessarily, you know, we're
- 27:524 deep and they're still not necessarily saying, OK, we got a
- 27:56single weirdo out here. So now later that same month,
- 28:01this one once again he consistent with his pattern,
- 28:06he's doing a break in now. He enters the premises.
- 28:10He immediately, you know, the husband's asleep, goes in and
- 28:12just analyzes the husband right from the Rep.
- 28:14That's for the shotgun, wouldn't it?
- 28:15That's he does it with the firearm.
- 28:17So he immediately makes entry and he analyzes the.
- 28:21Husband, Yeah. Neutralizes the potential
- 28:22threat, right. Then he begins assaulting the
- 28:25woman. And in addition to physically
- 28:31violating the woman he's making, he's making her repeat back to
- 28:36him, her his, like, little satanic phrases.
- 28:40And so he leaves her after he's had his way and he's ransacking
- 28:45the place. She's like, take whatever you
- 28:47want, take whatever you want. I mean, just poor woman's, her
- 28:49husband's dead right there. Yeah.
- 28:52Yeah. You got this crazy strung out.
- 28:55Yeah. Physically tall, skinny, you
- 28:57know, looks like a junkie, right?
- 29:00You know, every, every, every, every woman's dimer.
- 29:04Every every woman's dimer. Right.
- 29:05Just took his husband, ransacked the place, assaulted her for
- 29:09hours, made her recite satanic ritual stuff type stuff.
- 29:15This poor woman, right? So then he's going through the
- 29:17place and she knew that her husband kept a firearm in home.
- 29:26So while Premieres is off doing his ransacking, think she goes
- 29:30to grab the firearm, the shotgun?
- 29:32OK. So she she draws down on him,
- 29:37pulls the trigger. It was unloaded.
- 29:42Well, we know what's going to happen here.
- 29:43He of course goes. AB flips out.
- 29:46Flips the hell out so he. She's done She.
- 29:49Shoots her, runs to the kitchen, grabs the butcher knife, you
- 29:56know, physically stabbing her, takes the knife, gouges out her
- 30:00eyes. In addition to the the gruesome
- 30:04nature, the barbarity of the attack on her, now he's taking
- 30:08like using her blood to put pentagrams on the wall carving.
- 30:13Because she had really irritated him because God forbid that
- 30:16somebody tried to fight back. So that really escalated.
- 30:19Yeah, this is the mindset. Yeah, This is the, you know, the
- 30:23insecurity, the weak bitch. And was this?
- 30:27Finally, the case that got them to say, OK, we got.
- 30:32We've got an enormous problem because we have an enormous
- 30:35problem. Yes, I mean because the one the
- 30:37barbarity of the attack. Now, who was it?
- 30:39Was it Gates? Was Gates the police chief at
- 30:41this time? Sure, but I understand LA isn't.
- 30:45Although generally referred to as Los Angeles, the the San
- 30:49Gabriel Valley, LA is a collection of four or five dozen
- 30:52small municipalities. All of us have our own little
- 30:54police. Department and they all have
- 30:55their own little police. Department, yeah.
- 30:56You know, so there's always Covina Police Department, Covina
- 30:58Police Department. And so they're all under the
- 31:01rubric of LA County, like the sheriff's help out, but this
- 31:04isn't LAPD. Right.
- 31:05This isn't LA proper. Yeah, so to speak.
- 31:08And this is where the authorities had their first
- 31:11break. Oh, on this one.
- 31:13Because he had a pair of shoes, Remember, You know, we were back
- 31:18in around 1985. Like the cool guys were wearing,
- 31:21you know, like maybe the first year of Jordans.
- 31:23Yeah. Or the high top Reebok with the
- 31:25little straps. Or the K-Swiss.
- 31:27Or I don't know, Yeah. And so but he.
- 31:29Adidas, He had a Converse. Yeah, Converse have always been
- 31:33popular. Fans have always been popular.
- 31:34And so the, you know, the authorities are able to take
- 31:38what are essentially castings. A shoe print.
- 31:41Of the shoe print in order to determine the nature of the
- 31:43shoe. Well, he happened to have a pair
- 31:47of shoes that were unique. There hadn't been too many sold
- 31:51in the LA area, so whether he brought them from, maybe he
- 31:55dipped into Mexico and bought them or where he got them from
- 31:58has never really been established.
- 31:59It's just that there wasn't too many of those shoes.
- 32:02But that becomes like a key fact.
- 32:04The shoe print. The shoe print because as he's
- 32:07engaging in this activity, remember he's prowling, so he's
- 32:10stopping and looking in the window, so he's leaving.
- 32:12Seeing this common shoe print, this shoe print, that's where
- 32:15they start forensically putting this thing together because it's
- 32:18not like a converse or a joy. It's something that's it's an
- 32:22oddball kind of do do we know the type?
- 32:24Do we know the type of shoe? It was it.
- 32:26Was called Avia Avia. And so they get there and they
- 32:30see what he not only the imagery and the brutality of the
- 32:35physical attack upon her, but he's gulged out her eyes.
- 32:38He took her eyes with him and put him in like a little jewelry
- 32:41box. And he's, you know, they're just
- 32:43like, wow, this is this is outside the is on the far end of
- 32:47the deviant spectrum. Right, and then used her blood
- 32:51to do, you know, Satanic ritual pentagram 666 stuff on the
- 32:55walls. And I think that was Vincent and
- 32:58Maxine, right? So that Maxine was the one that
- 33:02was I think that's. Vincent and Maxine.
- 33:04Yep, Yep. And that's where you got into
- 33:06the Avia shoe print. And that's kind of their first
- 33:10break, you know, as as they're honing in on this bad guy.
- 33:14Sure, and so then he end up taking a six week break and in
- 33:20conjunction with one of the assaults he had left a another
- 33:28part of the feeding frenzy as he had been wearing an ACDC.
- 33:31Hat a hat. ACDC.
- 33:34Yeah. What's bad about it is he wore
- 33:36the hat, but he left the hat dropped off at the site.
- 33:39Oh. Oh.
- 33:39So the authorities recovered the.
- 33:41Hat so they had the ACDC, they had the ACD hat so in the haste
- 33:44to him leaving or whatever, it falls off, it falls off so you
- 33:47find. It so now he's.
- 33:48Now they got the the Ava Ava shoe and the ACDC.
- 33:53Hat. Well, the hat was from the
- 33:54previous event, so you got the hat on the first one.
- 33:56And the shoe print. Now you got the shoe print.
- 33:58So now there's the psychological heavy metal guy.
- 34:01Yeah, Satan worshipping. But not necessarily.
- 34:04I mean, look, foreign nationals, you know, immigrant children may
- 34:10not necessarily be the ones that are listening to you.
- 34:11You think who's listening to ACDC?
- 34:13You're not thinking, you know, some broke paisa that grew up in
- 34:18Texas. Some.
- 34:20Mexican immigrant who just crossed the border three months
- 34:22ago. This, this, this, this.
- 34:24This is kind of a way they can start pairing it.
- 34:26Down. That's the profile that they do
- 34:28to start narrowing. So now he takes a a six week
- 34:31hiatus and this is where you got the event with William and
- 34:36Lillian Doy. Now we're up in the mid-May.
- 34:38Yeah. And I think we're at, you know,
- 34:40I hear it. We're at probably just adults.
- 34:43We're at 5 now. We're going on 6:00 and 7:00
- 34:45here, I think. Similar circumstance breaks into
- 34:47the home. Now this is his ML.
- 34:50And this is what he does. He neutralizes the man, shoots
- 34:55the man in this particular circumstance, right?
- 34:57Just like he did before. Before, however, on the second
- 35:01attempt, the firearm jams, giving the man just enough time
- 35:11to call 911 before he. Gets on alive.
- 35:15Before he expires, before he passes away.
- 35:18Oh, so this is the first time they've ever got a potential
- 35:22witness? Bad guys here.
- 35:25So then he has to flee. She survives.
- 35:28Right, she probably doesn't get much.
- 35:31Right, she probably doesn't get much.
- 35:32Well, she has. She's able to provide whatever.
- 35:35She doesn't get unalived. No, she's this is his first time
- 35:38where they already say OK. This is really the first.
- 35:40Trip up. So now, two weeks later, he
- 35:43strikes again. He assaults a woman and he
- 35:48doesn't I'm alive her, but he spends his time violating in as
- 35:59devastating a woman can be violated while her son is there.
- 36:03Well, he's got the son in the closet does what he does with
- 36:07the with the mother. Of course she's going to do
- 36:09whatever she has to do to protect her son.
- 36:10Absolutely. And so he's she's telling him,
- 36:14take whatever you want, take whatever you want.
- 36:16Now he's takes the kid, forces the kid to take him around, show
- 36:18them where all the valuables are.
- 36:22And so this is a second incident now involving A brutal attack
- 36:28where the authorities are getting and a similar
- 36:31circumstance where the demonic pentagrams, the, you know, the
- 36:36symbology, the statements to her forcing the woman to make like
- 36:41satanic cult type phrases. Now he couple weeks later at the
- 36:45end of the month. Yeah.
- 36:47Another break in two elderly women.
- 36:51Like another 79 year old. Grandma.
- 36:53Yeah, another another invite with grandmothers, essentially.
- 36:56Right. And sisters.
- 37:00And he beats them so severely one of them gets unalived in the
- 37:05course of his rampage. The other one survives.
- 37:10Assaulted. Assaulted and he's, you know, he
- 37:14pentagrams now he's like, you know, cutting pentagrams into
- 37:17their body, their skin, you know.
- 37:20And now we have a common denominator.
- 37:22We have like our last three or four have all now.
- 37:24Had the satanic the satanic stuff theme.
- 37:27Right, right. And so.
- 37:29They got to know they they. Another woman who survived.
- 37:32Like he's not managing the situation.
- 37:36That's why you can see how chaotic he was.
- 37:38Right, Ramirez is just running wild.
- 37:41He's just running wild. It's like a fucking wild animal
- 37:43at this point. Just, Oh my God, you know, Yeah,
- 37:46he's. He needs to get high.
- 37:48He goes to some neighborhood and just walks down the street and
- 37:50he's like going from house to house.
- 37:51Any windows open, any screen doors he can pop into.
- 37:54And once again he abducts, this time a six year old child.
- 38:03So this is now by my by my counts, Pete, maybe child 4.
- 38:07Yeah, so like at this point I'm sure LAPD, everybody in our mom
- 38:12is going crazy because not only is he unaliving the people along
- 38:15with our, but he's armed, he's armed kids like you're just
- 38:17snatching of children. He's assault.
- 38:19He's. He's assault, violating.
- 38:21The worst type of way and he's unaliving them.
- 38:25He didn't unalive this child. But this one was 4.
- 38:28Yes, this is you know, but. I mean, yeah, but so you're
- 38:31you're you're you're taking liberties with this 4 year old.
- 38:35You're assaulting him, her and he's 4.
- 38:39They're they're 4. It was a, it was a six year old
- 38:41child and you know, 6 year olds aren't going to be able to give
- 38:44a physical description, but they are going to be able to say,
- 38:46well, he had dark hair. Right.
- 38:48Or he was tall. Or he was tall, but everybody,
- 38:49everybody's tall for a six year old.
- 38:51But but you know, like at least is they're going to get some
- 38:54idea like is this somehow all connected?
- 38:58Now were they Pete, unlike for instance, Lillian who made it
- 39:04and then the two grandmas, one of the grandmas who made it and
- 39:10then a couple of these people who have made it that didn't get
- 39:13put on his on a live count. Would they, were they starting
- 39:17to build a rendering as to were they able to start kind of
- 39:22dialing this guy in a? Little bit I saw in the in the
- 39:27public record there were some photos of like artist sketching.
- 39:30Right, because I think I'd seen some renderings where some
- 39:34police artist had kind of pared them down.
- 39:37But they weren't very, they weren't, they weren't very
- 39:39accurate also, and you know, one you're relying on.
- 39:43A six year old well. No, with respect to like Miss,
- 39:45Miss Maxine over here, you know, she had just, you know, did the
- 39:48people had these horrible experiences?
- 39:50She had just seen her husband get on a live.
- 39:52And now she's had an end in addition to the violation, but
- 39:55now she's dealing with all the satanic like like he
- 39:58psychologically is tormenting, sure.
- 40:01And so the next month and after he does, he does a six year old
- 40:07child. Violates the six year old.
- 40:09The next day breaks, breaks into a home, splits the woman's
- 40:13stroke. This is just that, this at this
- 40:16point, he's just. This is just a Wednesday, Yeah,
- 40:18for him. Yeah, and so now he's just and
- 40:21of course, I'm sure although the record doesn't end the
- 40:23Ransacker, so he can go get high.
- 40:25Whatever the junkies going to do.
- 40:27You move into July. With the the slit of the throat
- 40:31she did not alive, she stayed. Oh no, she's on alive.
- 40:33Oh, OK. And so he and I'm sure the same
- 40:37iconographic is all around. And so now they're going to be
- 40:39thinking like, OK, we really have a problem not wanting to
- 40:42scare the public. Right.
- 40:43But there comes a point where you've got to tell the public so
- 40:47they can have a head on a swivel.
- 40:48You know, we got a problem here. I mean, there goes a point to
- 40:52maybe messing up the integrity of your, of your, of the
- 40:56confidentiality of the of, of the investigation.
- 41:00But now there comes a point where you have to safeguard your
- 41:04community and let them know. Particularly that cause the next
- 41:07month is the most prolific and that particular month he had
- 41:12five unalivings. In July.
- 41:14Yeah, in July the. Next month coming up.
- 41:16One attempted violation of a woman, One severe beating in
- 41:23which the the victim survived. Two actual violations of women
- 41:29or two to me. Two actual additional violations
- 41:31of a sexual nature. One of them was with an 8 year
- 41:35old boy. He has another incident
- 41:37involving a 16 year old girl. And this is literally, you know,
- 41:4110 miles from my parents house. He abducts the child, a young,
- 41:44you know, young girl, 16 year old.
- 41:46Girl. He abducts her, he engages in
- 41:49the course of context he engages in and he goes to unalive her.
- 41:52Now he's got the tire iron and so he.
- 41:56So he essays does an assault. Physically attacks the girl with
- 42:03tire iron essays her, and then he goes to an alive her, and
- 42:10when doing so he's grabbing the a wire that he uses to try to
- 42:17asphyxiate, and in the midst of that event, there's an electric
- 42:23shock it goes. Through the wire.
- 42:27He, of course, is nuts, as I'll get out at this point.
- 42:33He interprets that as a signal from Satan, no, from Jesus.
- 42:39Oh, like leave this one. He runs.
- 42:45So that's is now she's 16. She's not six.
- 42:48Right, so she might be able to give a better explanation.
- 42:51So now you start seeing the authorities are able to start
- 42:55building a composite. A 16 year old girl could say,
- 42:58hey look, he was tall, right? He's taller than my dad.
- 43:00Like how tall is your dad? 62, He's your dad.
- 43:03So no, he's 64. OK, now you got an idea, you
- 43:05know, And so you're able to. From a much more credible.
- 43:07Source person yeah you can you know 8 year old 9 year old are
- 43:10going to be like oh he looked like bozo, you know 9.
- 43:14Year old he was 7 foot tall, you know, because so they get they
- 43:19talk to her the 16 year old she makes it and she's the first one
- 43:24that can start kind of maybe dot, you know, given the given
- 43:27the the the the California authorities some better
- 43:32direction as to what the night Stalker Richard Ramirez look
- 43:35like now fast. Forward going to August, he
- 43:40starts off the month, he shoots 2 more people, they survive.
- 43:46Typical burglary shooting. Yeah, they they don't really
- 43:49delve, delve too many into the details in these only because it
- 43:53was just yet another incident, I have no doubt.
- 43:56Just they were just happy they didn't sure it, you know,
- 44:00unalived. Couple days later he pivots into
- 44:02another circumstance. He used the MO goes in unalives.
- 44:05The husband essays the wife and at this point we can only infer
- 44:17that, well, one he knew he had to get out of the area.
- 44:23The police were frantic. Oh, so he's like, man, LA is so
- 44:27high. At this point, you can't.
- 44:29You can't have this kind of incident going on every two
- 44:31days, the guy. He's got like literally at this
- 44:33point he's got. Like he shot, he shot, shot 7
- 44:36people in five weeks, right? And you got kids.
- 44:39Kids getting a 16 year old Yeah, I know you're.
- 44:42Starting to kind of dial you in a little bit.
- 44:44So he goes, I think what San Fran back to San, back to San
- 44:46Fran, right? Yes.
- 44:47So that's where he takes off. He goes back up to San
- 44:49Francisco, like put a little and there's a little bit of a
- 44:52cooling off period. Right.
- 44:54So now he travels up to San Francisco, but the cooling off
- 44:57period is much shorter. Before he'd have, you know, from
- 45:00June to February, right? Or a six week period.
- 45:04Now he literally leaves the the venue, shows up in a new
- 45:10geographical venue. And gets right to it.
- 45:12It's right to it. So now he gets back up to San
- 45:14Francisco transient housing. Of course, he's broke, sure
- 45:18wants to get high. So he's going to go do what he
- 45:20ends up doing. Similar circumstance.
- 45:23There's another one of these events where he goes in this.
- 45:25Breaks in. Shoots Mr. Pan critically
- 45:29injuries the the wife and Barbara in the course of this
- 45:34particular. Well and Pete, you can see now
- 45:36this is an actual template. Sure.
- 45:39You break in, you kill you UN alive the husband.
- 45:43You assault as much as you can the wife you either don't on a
- 45:50liver or or apps tried on a liver and ransacked the place
- 45:54and get the hell out. Yes, but the authorities haven't
- 45:57disclosed information publicly. They know about the AVS.
- 46:02They have the Avia shoes. We're like 10.
- 46:04Here 9/10. You've got the Avia shoes, which
- 46:07is the key fact, which hasn't been disclosed publicly.
- 46:09And the ACDC hat. Well, the ACDC hat was
- 46:13disclosed. OK.
- 46:14That's what started fueling the association trying to blame
- 46:19heavy metal, right? But what's significant about
- 46:21this event is 2 things. One, you got the shoes.
- 46:27And the Avis, the Avia Avia. And the second thing is the
- 46:32firearm that he had used in Los Angeles, he had taken it with
- 46:36him to San Francisco. So now they got the Ballistics.
- 46:38I mean the Ballistics. So now they're able to tie the
- 46:42Bay Area event or the Los Angeles event.
- 46:45Right. And isn't this the first time
- 46:47that they actually the media gave him this Night Stalker?
- 46:51This is the one where, one, it becomes the Night Stalker, and
- 46:54two, this is what really changed law enforcement in California,
- 46:58like you, it wasn't San Francisco competing against LA.
- 47:02Like, no, you're going to form an interagency task force.
- 47:05You're going to work together, right?
- 47:08And. Oh, we have to at this point, I
- 47:11mean. Yes.
- 47:12And so now where things kind of went off the rail is at the time
- 47:16former Senator Dianne Feinstein was the mayor in San Francisco.
- 47:19So now here we got the the the LA Night Stalker is now striking
- 47:25in San Francisco, San Francisco Bay Area.
- 47:28Right. Is in panic.
- 47:30The mayor, of course, being a politician, she wants to quell
- 47:34public concern. She has a press conference, the
- 47:38mayor of San Francisco and the mayor of San Francisco and.
- 47:40Dianne Feinstein. At the time and yes, I'm sure
- 47:42she releases information that was, you know, confidential law
- 47:48enforcement information that shouldn't have been
- 47:50disseminated. And she's the one who comes out
- 47:54and says, look, we know we're it's the guy from LA and we're
- 47:56on it. We're tracking the guy down
- 47:58because she discloses the fact that he Avia shoes.
- 48:02Oh, so now he's. Well, what you going to do?
- 48:03He's going to stop wearing them. So he discovers that all they
- 48:07were able to tie a number of these events.
- 48:11So what does he do? He goes to the San Francisco.
- 48:14He goes to the Golden Gate Bridge and throws him into the
- 48:16Bay. Right, of course I'm going to
- 48:18get me some converse. Out of physical evidence, that
- 48:21was the basis that the authorities were able to use.
- 48:23Which was one of their two smoking guns.
- 48:25Yeah, because they were able to tie the the firearm.
- 48:27So now of course he's going to discharge the fire.
- 48:29He'll get rid of the firearm. He'll get rid of the shoes.
- 48:31Yeah, yeah. So now the authorities are back
- 48:33to square 1. Now we can't have anything else.
- 48:36Now we're back to square one, literally and.
- 48:38So now it's a it's a matter of waiting for this monster to
- 48:42strike. Right.
- 48:43And we have to get a whole new set of forensics, shoe prints
- 48:47Ballistics because dumbass Feinstein tipped.
- 48:52So now, because that information have been publicized in San
- 48:56Francisco, now he's got to leave the Bay Area.
- 48:58Yeah, he's got to go back to probably.
- 48:59LA he comes back down to Los Angeles.
- 49:02However, rather than return back to his area in LA County, he
- 49:10shoots down into Orange County, which is our, our neighboring
- 49:13county just to the South. And so he's doing his prowling
- 49:19activity and he's in an area called Mission Viejo, just, you
- 49:21know, heard of it. Very very nice area.
- 49:23Yeah, very nice. And so he's doing his prowling
- 49:26and he's deciding where or not he's going to break into a house
- 49:31because you've got the little boy, not a little boy like a 13
- 49:35year old boy is in the garage working on his bicycle and the
- 49:40father and the mother are home and the kids like hear
- 49:45something. And the area that he lived in in
- 49:47Mission Viejo was a little bit more on the on the undeveloped
- 49:50side. You'll get like coyotes coming
- 49:52down. So he was like, so he goes to
- 49:54take a look like what's going on?
- 49:55And he doesn't doesn't see anything, though He goes back to
- 49:58working on his bike and he hears it again.
- 50:01And this time he's convinced that there's somebody watching
- 50:05him. And so, and he makes a split
- 50:10decision to say, you know what? Boom, he breaks into the house.
- 50:14The kid does. The kid does.
- 50:14He's back in the house. Was able to look out the window
- 50:17and he sees a man. He runs of course and grabs his
- 50:21father. Like boy says dad, Hey dad, you
- 50:24know he's got some situation out here.
- 50:27The night Stalker flees and at this point he starts leaving
- 50:36behind like a fingerprints that aren't fully developed or that
- 50:49aren't where the authority didn't really have a a mechanism
- 50:53yet. This is really what drove the
- 50:56creation of these like computerized databases in order
- 50:58to be able to now, I'm sure the FBI already had this, but at the
- 51:01local level. And so the authorities,
- 51:06fortunately, Ramirez leaves. He doesn't attack the kid, thank
- 51:10God. He gets out of the situation.
- 51:12But the previous, a couple of weeks earlier, there'd been a
- 51:16break in at the family's home. So the mom's like, you know,
- 51:19let's just call it a place. Oh, at at the little kids house.
- 51:22Completely unrelated to America. Unrelated, there had been a.
- 51:24A Prowl? An actual prowler.
- 51:26Sure. So.
- 51:27They called the police. These already came out.
- 51:29They took a police report like nothing they can do.
- 51:31I'm not go ahead. Broken into some guy's house,
- 51:33you know, and so, but it was on record, but it prompted the
- 51:36family to make a second call. Now what's important is that
- 51:40when the kid saw the the man one, there was a little bit of a
- 51:45physical description. Right.
- 51:47But more importantly, when the guy when the night stalker fled,
- 51:54he going out, got into the car that he had stolen.
- 51:56Well, the kid ran out, got a make and model.
- 52:01This kids pretty kick ass. Pretty kick ass and a partial on
- 52:04the license plate. OK, you start to pare down
- 52:08process, don't we? But the authorities don't know
- 52:10that this. Is the night stalker.
- 52:13I think it might be some burglar that was there two weeks.
- 52:15Ago yes, that's and so now, a couple nights later, he strikes
- 52:19again the night stalker and in this particular same thing in in
- 52:23the Mission Viejo area and he, unlike the husband, essays the
- 52:29wife of the usual ransacking. Standard.
- 52:35This is the first time though, when he.
- 52:38Just the bill guy. Yes, and this is this is the
- 52:40where he how's the woman after he left her alive, you know the.
- 52:47Night Stalker. I think in my notes that I read
- 52:51Pete that he forces her to declare her love for Satan.
- 52:55Yes. Well, he, he's been doing that.
- 52:58He's making. Yeah.
- 52:59The he's these are the type of statements he's been doing to
- 53:01really psychologically torment for women.
- 53:03And he tells her you've been officially served or say you.
- 53:07Know yeah, this is yeah, the Night Stalker.
- 53:09So one, he's obviously keeping track of the the media coverage,
- 53:11right, right. And at this point, once the
- 53:14Night Stalker label had been fixed.
- 53:17And now he's saying, and she'll report back to the news that he
- 53:22said. And.
- 53:23Now it's way locked in but. It was in close proximity, the
- 53:29situation with the kid. Right, right.
- 53:32As far as Mission Viejo. Next thing you know, the kid
- 53:35gets a, the parents get a call from the detectives like, hey,
- 53:37we want to talk to that 13 year old.
- 53:39And so he was able to repeat, repeat the information.
- 53:41They actually grabbed a kid and they take him to go find.
- 53:44There's like a orange Toyota. And so they had several of these
- 53:48orange Toyotas around, like, and the kid and the kid like, no,
- 53:52that's not it. No, that's not it.
- 53:54That's not it. Well, shortly after the event in
- 53:58Mission, VA Hill where he analyzed the the husband and
- 54:00leaves the woman alive. And proclaimed to be the night.
- 54:02Stalker and proclaimed to be the Night Stalker.
- 54:04They found an orange Toyota in the Rampart district of Los
- 54:09Angeles. So obviously he drove the car
- 54:10back up to LA, ditched the car. He made an effort to try to not
- 54:16leave any fingerprints, right. What he failed to do, there had
- 54:21been a recent there'd been a new technology that had been
- 54:24developed by the Chinese that LAPD had been, you mean the
- 54:26Japanese that LAPD had recently begun utilizing.
- 54:30And although they were unable to obtain any fingerprints from the
- 54:34common areas, the one spot he didn't wipe down Ramirez was
- 54:39behind the rearview mirror. Of the car, yeah, because as
- 54:44you're adjusting it. Yeah.
- 54:46So the authorities were able to obtain.
- 54:48Partials. No, a full print.
- 54:50Oh a full print from this new tech, not just New Japanese does
- 54:55this. Extraction using the the crazy
- 54:57glue, right? I think it's still utilizing
- 54:59super glue. Yeah, Super glue, whatever they
- 55:00do, yes. And so, but that now gave them a
- 55:04clear print that they were able to use.
- 55:06They were able to feed it to. This is probably where you get
- 55:09the FBI coming in because that is a national database and the
- 55:14the national database that wasn't expected in 1985 happened
- 55:19to have a cut off date of January 1960.
- 55:22So like if you go to LA County, if you went to juvenile hall,
- 55:26they got your fingerprints. Right clerk starting as.
- 55:30Early as 60 January 1960. Ramirez was born in February of
- 55:3360. They got him on file,
- 55:38potentially. On file, Yes, potentially.
- 55:40So now, of course, they, they submit the information, they get
- 55:43a large number of potential match, potential matches, but
- 55:46now they start winnowing. And so this guy, he ultimately,
- 55:50so after Ramirez is done with this particular event in Mission
- 55:53Viejo, he leaves, goes out of town, jumps on a greyhound, he's
- 55:56gone. As the authorities are able to
- 55:59start doing their whittling, they are able to identify him in
- 56:04particular. And although I'm sure they would
- 56:08normally not do this, given the magnitude of, oh, the severity
- 56:12of the body work. Yeah, the fear that this guy had
- 56:15instilled, they decided to go public like Ricardo Ramirez.
- 56:21Night Stalker. Photo so now it's not a a a
- 56:26police sketcher it's in they're able to you know, they got they
- 56:29got booking photos they. Got photos of the guy?
- 56:31Yeah. Yeah, they got booking photos of
- 56:32the guy, and so they were able to now publicize his identity.
- 56:37He wasn't aware that this had happened, turns around, comes
- 56:42back. He doesn't realize the whole
- 56:44city knows Ricardo Ramirez. Yeah, they've had seven days of
- 56:48Ricardo Ramirez, a Night Stalker with print Public Enemy #1.
- 56:55Yeah, I don't think they mentioned the.
- 56:57I'm sure they always wouldn't disclose the nature of the
- 56:59forensic evidence, but they identified his photograph like
- 57:02we're asking the public's assistance.
- 57:03Look for this fucking guy, he comes back from his trip.
- 57:08And the I mean, he's terrorizing the two towns now.
- 57:12I mean, right. And they know that his whole
- 57:14body of work, so to speak, or the majority of it.
- 57:17So I mean, he is apps. Everybody's got their head on a
- 57:20swivel looking for this. Guy And so when he returns to
- 57:23Los Angeles, he unaware that the the city is everybody's looking
- 57:29for him. He gets back to LA, he goes to
- 57:33get a, you know, like a little convenience market.
- 57:37And while on his way, he gets the soda.
- 57:41He comes out and civilians see him.
- 57:44Sure. And he's in a predominantly
- 57:46Hispanic area. And they see him.
- 57:48He's our young El Matadore. Matadore the killer.
- 57:53Oh, so say it again. El Matador.
- 57:57El Matador, right? And so now they're like.
- 58:00And the Mexicans in LA, they don't care.
- 58:03The men on the street, they don't care.
- 58:05It's not the police, it's not the Fed, it's the it's the men
- 58:08on the street. This is a working class
- 58:10neighborhood. What this is the say it again.
- 58:11Say it again, El Matador today, but there you go.
- 58:14Cousin, what are you going to do?
- 58:15To me, they, they, they start yelling at screaming the men
- 58:17common ages are beating. They put it away.
- 58:19They the police when they showed up, they had to save it.
- 58:23I mean it's. From the Mexican.
- 58:25From the men of the city boys. Yeah, they're like that.
- 58:28So yes, in fact, I got a great. I'll give it to a.
- 58:30Producer of some great St. Justice.
- 58:31Yes. And so he, and in fact, there's
- 58:34a photograph of him in the back of the cop car, all bandaged up
- 58:37and wrapped up because. Because the the Mexican guys,
- 58:41they weren't having. It they weren't having it yeah,
- 58:43they the. So the like you said, LAPD had
- 58:46to save him from the crazy Mexicans that were whipping.
- 58:48From the from the people that lived in the community that
- 58:50we're not going to tolerate what this guy was doing.
- 58:52And so when he's in the back of the cop car when the when the
- 58:55authorities saved the scumbag from the the people of the city,
- 58:58he's in the back of the cop car in the Mexicanos.
- 59:00Yeah, he's like, it's me, it's me.
- 59:03He's like, he's just straight up saying he's he's claiming to be
- 59:05the night soccer. And in fact, there was a great
- 59:08shot send you a newspaper article where it's on the front
- 59:10page of the paper and they have a detective walking him out and
- 59:12he's like, it's me, it's me. And and of course, it's an
- 59:18enormous sense of relief throughout the city.
- 59:20Right, Oh my God, you know, so take walk us through then like
- 59:24is there much more left after, you know, other than did he did
- 59:29he plead to all of them? No, he went.
- 59:30He went to trial. OK.
- 59:32And so his prosecution, it took four years to get to trial.
- 59:40Well, you had a lot of discovery.
- 59:41Well, sorry, a tremendous amount of discovery.
- 59:43And then, you know, with all the discovery, the the defense is
- 59:46going to fight it whether it gets in or not.
- 59:48That's. I mean, he's, you know, I'm sure
- 59:52he is subjected, subjected to an enormous battery of
- 59:55psychological examinations. Sure, exactly.
- 59:57And so that entitles. Especially throwing the Satanic.
- 1:00:00Version yeah. So that all that all of that's
- 1:00:01going to drag out the proceedings do.
- 1:00:04You think his defense or maybe you know, did they go with the
- 1:00:07insanity deal? I don't know what the nature of
- 1:00:09the defense was, but what was most interesting about the the
- 1:00:12trial proceedings is he seemed to revel in the.
- 1:00:17Stardom. Attention, right?
- 1:00:19He'd be in the middle of the courtroom yelling out Hell Hell
- 1:00:23Satan to. Acting out.
- 1:00:26Acting, you know what I mean? He'd show up with a pentagram.
- 1:00:29I got a sender, producer, a photo.
- 1:00:31I found one of him with pentagrams on his hands.
- 1:00:34Oh yeah, I think I've seen that before.
- 1:00:37You know, he's obviously reveling in.
- 1:00:40In the exposure. In the exposure, right?
- 1:00:42And but what was interesting about the case is, although the
- 1:00:47ultimate result is a foregone conclusion, this guy becomes a
- 1:00:50little bit of a celebrity. Yeah, much like like the John
- 1:00:54Wayne he's. Receiving he's, he's receiving
- 1:00:56he there's like 75 different love letters that he's receiving
- 1:01:00from women. And of course, now that he's,
- 1:01:03you know, I've read a bunch of the articles where they're like,
- 1:01:07you know, he was a, you know, a, a good looking or a dashing,
- 1:01:11like, what are you talking to? Get some fucking junkies strung
- 1:01:15out looking. But apparently for some reason,
- 1:01:16there's these crazy psychotic women who fell in love with this
- 1:01:21guy. He had supporters coming to the
- 1:01:22trial, women dressed all in black, claiming themselves to be
- 1:01:26Satanists. All to support this wax yeah,
- 1:01:28just. Something Yeah.
- 1:01:29He ultimately ended up marrying one of the women.
- 1:01:34One of the women what what the The case preceded the trial, and
- 1:01:39one of the women on Four years later, one of the women on the
- 1:01:42jury falls for him. What wouldn't have been a hung
- 1:01:47jury? No, there in the middle of the
- 1:01:48trial, she he's making googly eyes.
- 1:01:53They've got like this chemistry. So one of the women falls in
- 1:01:58love with him. He's got this.
- 1:02:00Chemistry thinking he may be able to hang this jury.
- 1:02:02Right. In the midst of the trial, the
- 1:02:05woman that fell for made us in the midst of the trial, the jury
- 1:02:08member, she ends up getting unalived.
- 1:02:13Turns out her boyfriend unalived her.
- 1:02:15But at the time, people initially didn't know it was the
- 1:02:18boyfriend. They're thinking how'd he do it?
- 1:02:20He's got people to. Put it on his.
- 1:02:21He's got people on the street. Right, he's talking to some wack
- 1:02:25jobs on the streets. So now this and this is now
- 1:02:27you're thinking, you know, this is like a Manson type situation
- 1:02:29where the people were trying to help Manson.
- 1:02:33So this rekindles. The whole.
- 1:02:36The whole thing, like they're like, it couldn't have been him.
- 1:02:38He didn't like the, you know, the authorities like he didn't
- 1:02:40leave the jail. He's the boyfriend on a live of
- 1:02:42her because he knew she was falling.
- 1:02:43For the details are not. Sketchy on.
- 1:02:45That yes I know. I tried to find out.
- 1:02:47What I mean? Yeah, I can imagine he finds out
- 1:02:49that you're on a jury and you fall in love for this guy,
- 1:02:52right? And so that was the the twist in
- 1:02:55the middle of the trial, right? His all of a sudden having
- 1:02:57celebrity status, him having groupies showing up right him.
- 1:03:02Him falling in love with the juror.
- 1:03:03The juror falling in love with him, right?
- 1:03:05Falling in love with another one of the groupie.
- 1:03:07All of a sudden this guy's getting attention from women.
- 1:03:10He's walking into the courtroom, He's acting like he's waving to
- 1:03:13his fans like I'm fucking believe what is going on like.
- 1:03:18So Fast forward, he gets convicted.
- 1:03:20He's he gets convicted in the jail.
- 1:03:21Probably replaced the juror with an alternate.
- 1:03:24Sure. I think once she gets on a live
- 1:03:25in the midst of the trial. Right, which is a shitstorm in
- 1:03:27itself. Which is, yeah, interesting that
- 1:03:30they didn't declare a Mr. Right. And just say, OK, we need to
- 1:03:34regroup. Here, like I'm sure the
- 1:03:35authorities had to go all hands find out what the hell happened
- 1:03:38because we can't have because now other jurors are going to be
- 1:03:40frightened. Sure.
- 1:03:42Like if it's a domestic dispute between her and her boyfriend,
- 1:03:44that's one thing, right? But if it's unaddressed, if it's
- 1:03:47tied to Ramirez, now you're scared as hell to you know, So
- 1:03:52they get, they get through that navigation.
- 1:03:54And the judge, ultimately they get.
- 1:03:55He gets convicted and the judge imposes hands down capital
- 1:04:00sentence. And ultimately, you know, the
- 1:04:03universe got a little bit of justice because he didn't
- 1:04:07survive to have the sentence executed.
- 1:04:10He had a aggressive form of cancer.
- 1:04:15OK, how old? How?
- 1:04:17What? How old was he when he died?
- 1:04:1853. Oh, that's great.
- 1:04:21Meaning they took them early. Yeah.
- 1:04:23That's what I'm saying, The universe.
- 1:04:24Yeah, I had there was a. A small measure.
- 1:04:26Yeah, a little bit of karma, a little universal karma.
- 1:04:29There I mean nothing to compare the wow, the tragedy this guy
- 1:04:32left behind in his wake. Wow, there you have it, the
- 1:04:35Night Stalker Richard Ramirez on I never and and here's the thing
- 1:04:39about it, Pete like so I think they got like 12 or 13 on his
- 1:04:43tab, but I don't think they counted a lot of those kids.
- 1:04:47Well, remember, they didn't bring the prosecutions involving
- 1:04:50the children because they didn't want to have to force.
- 1:04:53The family to testify. People have to contend with that
- 1:04:55also. He ended up marrying one of the
- 1:04:58the groupies and in 2009, a few years before he.
- 1:05:04Passed. Before he passed, the
- 1:05:07authorities were able to link him to the very first one, the
- 1:05:11little Asian girl, the eight-year.
- 1:05:12Old in Tenderloin. That's right, 8 or 9 year old up
- 1:05:14in San Francisco in Tenderloin. So they didn't know Tenderloin
- 1:05:17until till nearly he was. Because they always prior to
- 1:05:22that they started the nice stalker saga with the event in
- 1:05:25June of 84 in Los Angeles. Turns out it actually predated a
- 1:05:28few months earlier in San, in San Francisco.
- 1:05:31And it was when the forensic evidence because up until this
- 1:05:35point he has literally groupies are putting money on his books
- 1:05:38or sending books. They're they're, they're
- 1:05:39advocating for his release. They're saying he's innocent.
- 1:05:42They're like, are you fucking insane?
- 1:05:43You know, these women are just psychotic.
- 1:05:45Well, you know, stupid bitches. OK, well, I don't.
- 1:05:47I guess you can say it. I don't.
- 1:05:49Yeah. And so, but yeah, that was like,
- 1:05:51unbelievable. These were crazy wack job women.
- 1:05:53And so even that was too much for the wife, right?
- 1:05:58Like she left him and she left him and divorced.
- 1:06:01So he. Got married in prison and once
- 1:06:05the wife thought out about the tenderloin.
- 1:06:07Yeah, what's the issue involving the the the child?
- 1:06:09Because they had recovered like handkerchiefs left from the
- 1:06:14scene and they were able to tie the DNA from the.
- 1:06:17They had a material rights on that one, yeah.
- 1:06:18Because there was two people which caused the little girls
- 1:06:21and. So even the crazy bitch that
- 1:06:23decides to fall in love with him and marry him in prison once the
- 1:06:27San Francisco 9 year old came in play.
- 1:06:31She's like, I'm out, I'm out. That's too much, That's too
- 1:06:33much. She didn't want that on her tab.
- 1:06:34Yeah, she's you. Know boy, I mean, I'm sure
- 1:06:36obviously she subscribed to the notion that he was innocent of
- 1:06:38all the other ones but this is definitive and it's.
- 1:06:43Well, good for her I guess. The fact that she even got
- 1:06:46together with this guy, I mean. True.
- 1:06:48I mean, how flawed, how flawed do you have to be as a woman to
- 1:06:53want to fall in love with a man that's never going to be able to
- 1:06:57be free? Man, I can't.
- 1:06:59I can't thank you enough for for watching our episode.
- 1:07:02More importantly, share it, like it, tell your friends about it.
- 1:07:06We'll have we'll have another one next week.
- 1:07:10Maybe, maybe might be might be cartel related.
- 1:07:13We got a lot of people reaching out wanting us, Pete to break
- 1:07:16the cartel. I feel like our first cartel was
- 1:07:18kind of the the the middle portion and now we got to kind
- 1:07:21of unwind it and go to the prequel as to how it all.
- 1:07:24Started that was that was essentially a case study.
- 1:07:26Yes, kind of a. Like let me illustrate to to
- 1:07:30this. Like date and like you said, the
- 1:07:32the 20s or the 50s or whatever you told me about, you know,
- 1:07:36when it when it first started. With the political well, the
- 1:07:40drug trade itself began in the 1820s, eighteen 30s.
- 1:07:45Or in the 1800s. Yeah, Wow.
- 1:07:47But not of course, it's at the time nothing was illegal.
- 1:07:51Right, right. You just had to get.
- 1:07:53It yeah. And so now the actual advent of
- 1:07:55what was considered. Was the early 1900s.
- 1:07:59Was it like 19 O 6 was the 1st? Was the first.
- 1:08:01These are illegal. Targeting specifically a a
- 1:08:06compound in conjunction with a specific ethnic.
- 1:08:09That's a couple weeks from now. We appreciate you everything
- 1:08:12pretty much across the board at Deadly Intentions starring Pete
- 1:08:17and I'm the Tagalong Bubba. We appreciate y'all.
