Transcript
- 0:01Welcome to Motherhood Aligned and Assigned, where
- 0:04we help guide mothers from symptoms to solutions.
- 0:07We are Dr. Serena Kaufman and Dr. Veronica Schultz
- 0:10nervous system specialist, helping families discover
- 0:12the missing link in their wellness journey
- 0:14Join us as we translate complex health challenges into
- 0:17simple, actionable solutions for you and your children.
- 0:21your family deserves to thrive.
- 0:23Not just survive.
- 0:25All right.
- 0:26Dr. Veronica and I have noticed a set of two
- 0:30trends when it comes to people who find our office.
- 0:35A lot of times people find us when they've tried
- 0:39everything else, and so we either get one group that.
- 0:44They come in because they said we ran labs and my
- 0:48doctor says, I'm fine.
- 0:49Everything is normal.
- 0:51And me coming from this functional medicine
- 0:53background, I'm like, well.
- 0:55Probably not, but we can chat.
- 0:58And then we have the other end of the spectrum.
- 1:00The people who have already, dove way in deep into
- 1:03the functional route and they've had $600 stool tests
- 1:08and EKGs for their heart.
- 1:11'cause maybe like there something's wrong with
- 1:12their heart and MRIs, like all these things, right?
- 1:18And the Dutch test, that's like $500 plus.
- 1:21And like all my labs are terrible.
- 1:25I, I'm dying,
- 1:27Basically.
- 1:27Like, and, all these supplements cost this much and this detox
- 1:31is this much and it's gonna take this much time and I
- 1:34have to do this specific diet.
- 1:36And they are torn of, they don't know which direction to
- 1:40go because they're overwhelmed with all of the options, right?
- 1:44So we have my.
- 1:46Physician said everything's fine, or My functional medicine
- 1:50doctor said, I have all of these things wrong with me
- 1:52and it's gonna take this like thousands of dollars
- 1:55protocol to, get to my gut.
- 1:58It's usually the gut.
- 1:59Get my gut back on track.
- 2:01And a lot of times those people that go the gut route,
- 2:06they spend thousands of dollars and months and change
- 2:09their diets and like uproot their whole life to kind of
- 2:14feel okay and be stressed.
- 2:17And their nervous system is more stressed, and
- 2:19they're not very happy.
- 2:20And they come to us and like, I don't know what else to do,
- 2:22but I've already spent this much money, so I don't wanna
- 2:23spend any more money, but you should tell me what to do next.
- 2:26Yeah, literally.
- 2:31Let's see,
- 2:32And what we're probably gonna tell you is how's
- 2:36your nervous system?
- 2:37We're not gonna tell you.
- 2:38We're gonna ask you, how's your nervous system, and
- 2:40we're gonna scan you with our insight scans that tell us
- 2:44what's the balance of your nervous system look like?
- 2:45Are you full throttle on the gas pedal, which is keeping you
- 2:49in fight or flight in which you can't tap into rest and die?
- 2:52Digest your gut.
- 2:54A brain gut connection.
- 2:56how are.
- 2:56are.
- 2:57Levels that each segment of your nervous system doing, that we
- 3:00can peek in through your spine are, is it, is it really shut
- 3:03down and there's no tone there?
- 3:05So there's isn't this brain gut connection probably.
- 3:10we have objective ways to measure.
- 3:12Hey, your nervous system's not online, and it's the
- 3:14foundation for everything.
- 3:16And so what if, just kind of throw it out there.
- 3:19This is what I have to do with like, with the people who just
- 3:21like, have so much information at their fingertips and so
- 3:26many functional providers who all have their expertise is
- 3:31like, okay, here, here me out.
- 3:34Here me out.
- 3:35You can do all these other things.
- 3:37But your nervous system is the foundation.
- 3:39It is the master system.
- 3:41Air traffic control for all other cells, organ
- 3:44tissues of your body.
- 3:46And it's not glamorous, right?
- 3:48I'm not gonna make you take something three times a
- 3:50day and change your diet.
- 3:52And it's gonna seem really, Silly to like coming from this
- 3:56like big, hefty functional route that we're simply
- 4:00removing stress from your nervous system so that you.
- 4:04Can adapt and heal the way you were designed to, right?
- 4:07That your body can do this itself.
- 4:09You can do so much itself.
- 4:10If we remove what's in the way and we're just removing what's
- 4:13in the way, we're not adding a bunch of stuff, which feels
- 4:16too easy for people who've come from the functional route.
- 4:19And it seems bizarre for the people who are coming from
- 4:22their primary care physician who has like run ran A CBC, say
- 4:26like, well, you're not anemic.
- 4:27Good luck.
- 4:28Like.
- 4:30Dr. Spicy today?
- 4:32Yeah, look, this isn't, I think we're both feeling a
- 4:35little spicy like it, but I'm just, it can be really
- 4:39frustrating to know like this.
- 4:41I'm this far into practice and I am pretty dang
- 4:44confident that we can get you.
- 4:47Pretty far by regulating your nervous system.
- 4:50When I see your scans and I put your story together, I know
- 4:54we can make leaps and bounds, and then if we need to touch
- 4:57up with functional medicine and get the parasites outta
- 4:59your body, fine, let's go.
- 5:02Let's find someone that can do that.
- 5:03Uh.
- 5:03but here's, here's what's like driving me absolutely crazy.
- 5:07Is that like, yes,
- 5:08that like, yes,
- 5:09fine.
- 5:10You need to do a parasite cleanse.
- 5:11That's wonderful.
- 5:12If your liver is offline, if your spleen in your kidneys and
- 5:17your bowels are offline, where are those parasites gonna go?
- 5:20Right?
- 5:21Like, it's like why do we keep, I understand
- 5:24gut health and like.
- 5:24like.
- 5:25And, and I understand this is kind of like
- 5:27an US problem, right?
- 5:27'cause we need to get out there to these funk med docs
- 5:30and be like, Hey, we just need one more layer before
- 5:32you do all of these things.
- 5:33But the problem is that we, we as a society have gotten so
- 5:37knowledgeable about the gut that we've forgot the basics, right?
- 5:41It's like, it's just like you were saying, there's like,
- 5:44you know, there's detoxes and tinctures and supplements and
- 5:48all of these things, you know?
- 5:49Stand on one foot, jump up and down and do a back
- 5:52flip while you're drinking this like milk thistle.
- 5:55I don't even know if you can
- 5:56Out on the full moon.
- 5:59seriously is like, you know, mercury and retrograde
- 6:02or whatever they call it.
- 6:02Like, my goodness, you're gonna do all of these
- 6:05things to a, a gut system that's offline, I mean.
- 6:11That'd be like, you have like a, I'm looking at all my wires
- 6:14here and I'm thinking you have like an extension cord and
- 6:17you're like, I'm just gonna keep plugging things into
- 6:19it until it starts working.
- 6:20When you just need to like plug it into the wall, right?
- 6:22Like put it into source.
- 6:24Like that is literally what it's like is we're adding all these
- 6:26things that Sure might help in some ways, and they do help.
- 6:31It's not that I'm saying they don't help, it's just
- 6:32that if you don't do the foundation and the basics
- 6:35first, you are literally.
- 6:37Throwing things at a system that is already overwhelmed
- 6:41with what it currently has.
- 6:43Mm-hmm.
- 6:44And I hate to say this, but also now you're kind of causing
- 6:47more damage because now, now after, so, and I think
- 6:51where I'm getting like spicy about this is like I'm seeing
- 6:53patients in the middle of their decision making skills, right?
- 6:56Where it's.
- 6:56like.
- 6:58For the first probably year practice, it was like I got
- 7:00the people who had already tried it all and they were
- 7:02like, no one else can help me.
- 7:04What do I do?
- 7:05Now?
- 7:05I'm getting a wave of patients of like, I have choices and
- 7:08I haven't necessarily done it yet, but I'm trying to decide
- 7:11and, and I'm just watching them like collapse at this level of
- 7:16should I try this and should I try that and should I try this?
- 7:18And it's looking very similar to my patients who come from
- 7:21the medical world, right?
- 7:22Because they're just.
- 7:23Guessing that's what it is.
- 7:25Like they're just guessing, well, that didn't work, so let's
- 7:28more expensive guesses too.
- 7:30And so now it's like I'm watching these patients, I'm,
- 7:32I know we're gonna see them in our office eventually because
- 7:34it's like I'm watching them.
- 7:36them.
- 7:37Be dysregulated going into this practitioner's office.
- 7:40Try something, get hopeful, try something, lose their hope.
- 7:44Say, oh, let's try this instead, try that thing.
- 7:47Lose their help.
- 7:48They're also paying for all these things in the process.
- 7:51And then they come to us like Dr. Sharita said broke and
- 7:54dysregulated and sad and being like, what can you do for me?
- 7:57And it's like, man, I just wish,
- 7:59Mm-hmm.
- 7:59we could catch you and we could say the right
- 8:01things to have you hear us.
- 8:03Because you're right.
- 8:04do we need
- 8:05simple.
- 8:05Literally.
- 8:06I know.
- 8:07It's like, and I think it's, I think that you hit
- 8:08it, the nail on the head.
- 8:09It's like it's too simple.
- 8:10'cause I'm literally like, well, we just need
- 8:12to release the stress.
- 8:13And they're like, well, that can't be it, so I need to
- 8:15try all these things first.
- 8:17And then, oh, it didn't work a lot.
- 8:19Well, you know, I didn't get the rose results I wanted to.
- 8:22And so now I'm back into your office and it's like, man.
- 8:26I, I want these things to work for you.
- 8:28I really do.
- 8:28And that's why I want you to go through the office first,
- 8:31so that after that, after your gut is online, after your, you
- 8:35know, your liver is functioning and detoxing properly, you
- 8:38know, then you take that and you do whatever you want with it.
- 8:43Mm-hmm.
- 8:44Yeah.
- 8:45Got that.
- 8:45off our chest.
- 8:48Thank you for listening to our TED Talk.
- 8:49Anyway, have a good day.
- 8:51I don't care.
- 8:52care.
- 8:53so I have a good example, just to paint a picture of.
- 8:57How the nervous system can, once interference is removed,
- 9:01can do incredible things.
- 9:03So I have a patient, she came in, she was referred
- 9:06to us by a friend who's like, no, seriously,
- 9:09this is life changing.
- 9:11Just give it a shot.
- 9:12'cause she was at a loss.
- 9:13her heart rate was spiking after she did sports.
- 9:16And, when her job got stressful, but she was
- 9:20like, she cognitively knew.
- 9:21She's like, this shouldn't be that stressful.
- 9:24But my heart rate spikes and it doesn't come back down
- 9:27for the rest of the day, and then I'm exhausted by
- 9:30dinner time and I have to like take a nap or something.
- 9:33It's just terrible.
- 9:34It's just this cycle of does anything that requires
- 9:37like tapping a little bit into fight or flight.
- 9:39Gets way stuck in fight or flight and then can't come
- 9:42out of it no matter what she does, like breathing
- 9:44exercises, all these things.
- 9:45And so she was planning, she was ramping up to go get, blood
- 9:49tests to see like all of the, lab markers for her heart health
- 9:53to see like, okay, something might be wrong with my heart.
- 9:55which was gonna, that's like a whole process you have to
- 9:57go through to like primary care physician then get
- 10:00referred to by a cardiologist and then get the labs if
- 10:03they agree to run the labs.
- 10:05All those things.
- 10:06And then she was considering like, right, we can
- 10:09consider supplements.
- 10:10Like what supplements?
- 10:11Can you just calm me down and relax me?
- 10:13Like all of these things.
- 10:16And she comes from like a medical background as
- 10:19far as education, right?
- 10:20So I had a, this was like a tough one to.
- 10:23Just have really sharp communication skills on
- 10:27conveying the story I saw in her scans and how that was relating
- 10:31to how she was doing right.
- 10:32There was a lot of stress on her.
- 10:34Upper cervical vagus nerve.
- 10:36Vagus nerve is our brake pedal, okay?
- 10:39It's a rest and digest, so the vagus nerve can
- 10:41slow down her heart.
- 10:43Can slow down our breathing and respiration
- 10:46can turn on digestion.
- 10:48It is directly correlated with the tone of our
- 10:52digestive system, by the way, and directly correlated
- 10:56with our immune system.
- 10:57That's linked to our digestive system, And so my theory
- 11:02was is like, look, this isn't on my list of things
- 11:04that I've helped, right.
- 11:05I haven't directly helped with, improving.
- 11:08Heart rate and fight or flight in this acute manner.
- 11:13But overall, there's stress here on the vagus nerve
- 11:16and we gotta get that off and see what happens.
- 11:18And it took a whole, like the first phase of her
- 11:21care, the first 12 visits, like not a lot of change,
- 11:25re-scanned, I had to change up the technique I was using.
- 11:28And then in this second phase of care, huge difference.
- 11:33She's like, I'm having good days, like I'm playing
- 11:36pickleball and I'm not, like my heart rate isn't skyrocketing
- 11:41and it comes back down.
- 11:42I'm not exhausted by dinner time.
- 11:44I didn't need a nap today.
- 11:45She's like, but I suck at pickleball because I can't
- 11:48get into fight or flight.
- 11:49She's like, for the first time in years, she's
- 11:51like, for the first time in years I'm not winning.
- 11:54which is really interesting.
- 11:55Yeah, her body's like way, let off the gas pedal and
- 11:57she's like, I can't get it.
- 11:58it.
- 11:59But that's, so I just think that's so, I mean, that's so
- 12:02typical of the process, right?
- 12:04It's like healing.
- 12:06We think that healing means turning everything off, but
- 12:09that's actually still in your, that's almost like when
- 12:11you get into repair, right?
- 12:12Because it's like you come in on one end, whether you're too
- 12:15low or too high, and then your body swings to the other side.
- 12:19Right?
- 12:19And get stuck there too.
- 12:21But it's like, now we're gonna help it.
- 12:24Repair and actually be able to go back and forth.
- 12:27Yeah.
- 12:27Yeah.
- 12:28I find that it's the other side that they weren't being, weren't
- 12:31able to tap into the body just spends time there tapping
- 12:35like, yes, finally we did
- 12:36Yeah.
- 12:37Like rebuilding that until I can find balance.
- 12:40But she doesn't have to go get all those heart
- 12:44like blood tests and scans
- 12:46Isn't that crazy?
- 12:47Yeah.
- 12:47she did get, I think she did get an EKG for her heart.
- 12:50She's like, well it was normal.
- 12:52So I don't know.
- 12:53it's like, well, the root issue was not that your heart was
- 12:56all of a sudden like beating faster and doesn't know how
- 12:58to regulate itself, right?
- 13:00The, the organ does what the nervous system tells
- 13:02it to do, no matter what.
- 13:05Mm-hmm.
- 13:06So that's just like a very, I feel like that's a very crystal
- 13:08clear example of let's look at the root cause and chiropractors
- 13:14are always gonna say.
- 13:15That they're, they can get you to the root cause 'cause we're
- 13:18lit. Like we are one of the only providers that are directly
- 13:22interacting with and removing stress from the nervous system,
- 13:25which is your master system.
- 13:27and that's just how it is.
- 13:28So we're gonna feel like we know the answers all the time.
- 13:31We.
- 13:31We,
- 13:31A lot of us are a little cocky because, because we see cool
- 13:34stuff and we have for forget
- 13:37And I wouldn't even say.
- 13:38Yeah, I feel like it's, it's not even just cockiness at
- 13:41this point, because I think it, the cockiness would be
- 13:43like if we were going off of pure intuition, right.
- 13:46Which.
- 13:47Which
- 13:48Some of our professionals,
- 13:50I'm gonna say, like I said, some of us are cocky,
- 13:52yes, that's
- 13:52not all of
- 13:53that's true.
- 13:54Some are like, we're just so cool.
- 13:56'cause like seriously, even without the framework that
- 13:58we operate under px, you can get amazing things done
- 14:01in chiropractic in general.
- 14:03And it really is, and it's not that we're doing anything
- 14:05different within chiropractic.
- 14:06We're just changing our intention and we're changing
- 14:09the approach and we're almost like We're, we're making
- 14:11sure to never get too cocky.
- 14:13I mean, it's pretty cool what we do, but too cocky because
- 14:15we still have to, you know, we still have to hear you out.
- 14:18I mean, I still have to know what's changing
- 14:20every time you come.
- 14:21I still need your insight.
- 14:22I can't just, like, it's not me doing these things.
- 14:24It's like me understanding your body so that I can
- 14:27then educate your body how to understand itself.
- 14:29Right.
- 14:30And I can't do any of that without scans, without your
- 14:32insight, without you, you know?
- 14:33So it's like, it's a team effort, but then as a team.
- 14:36We will go off because
- 14:38Yeah.
- 14:39the craziest things happen and it's so cool to Yeah.
- 14:42I would say I'm pretty cocky about my, my ability
- 14:45to see my patients.
- 14:46I will say that I'm very good at that.
- 14:47Mm-hmm.
- 14:49Yeah.
- 14:49So it's all about searching for, in your quest to
- 14:52figure out what's going on.
- 14:54Have you considered that it's your nervous system, and that
- 14:59at some point in your life have you experienced emotional,
- 15:01physical, chemical stress?
- 15:03That's, that's been more than your nervous system
- 15:06can process it once, and so you're in the store.
- 15:09Or for my older people, not old people, older people
- 15:14who aren't kids, right.
- 15:16It's just been a lifetime of just general emotional,
- 15:20physical, chemical stress, and so that just builds up
- 15:24to create an older generation that's just like a slow
- 15:27storm that's compounded over time and not just like
- 15:31acute traumatic birth or,
- 15:34Well, there's not too, it's just the body's compensated.
- 15:36And then now, now we're in a different set of,
- 15:39Yeah.
- 15:40Amazing.
- 15:41So whether you in or in the category of like, I've done
- 15:44all the things and now I don't know where else to go.
- 15:46I used to call us that office, like so many people came to us.
- 15:49I used to call us the office that people came to when no
- 15:51one else knew what to go to.
- 15:53And I just feel like we're getting called into a new
- 15:56segment of people who don't need to go through that journey.
- 16:00They can find us first and then we will help you.
- 16:05You know, refer to that funked dog.
- 16:06It's not that we're, that's another part of the
- 16:08cockiness that we don't have.
- 16:09Right.
- 16:09It's like, I will never say that all you need in your
- 16:12life is chiropractic care.
- 16:13I, I truly don't believe that, but I will say, you need
- 16:17chiropractic care first for all the things in your life,
- 16:20Hmm.
- 16:20and I will die on that hill.
- 16:22Yeah.
- 16:22That's a good hill.
- 16:25Okay.
- 16:25I'll pray this out.
- 16:26Okay.
- 16:27Dear Lord, thank you for all of the beautiful minds
- 16:32that you have, created and put on this earth to help
- 16:36us navigate our fallen world that comes with disease and
- 16:42dysfunction and sickness.
- 16:44Lord, thank you for.
- 16:46This path that Dr. Veronica and I have found to help
- 16:49people get to the root cause and bring a piece of heaven
- 16:52down to earth and healing so that your creation can live
- 16:57as optimally as you designed.
- 16:59Amen.
- 17:01Amen.
- 17:02Thank you for joining us on Motherhood Aligned and Assigned.
- 17:05We hope today's episode helped you connect the dots in your
- 17:07family's health journey.
- 17:09Remember, this is where nervous system health
- 17:11meets motherhood wisdom.
