Speaker 2: She got what she deserved.
• 0:15
Speaker 1: Oh I'm your host, Ken Monroe, and every week we
• 0:19
Speaker 1: dive into real life stories from the wild world of
• 0:22
Speaker 1: work and what can happen when the wrong person gets
• 0:26
Speaker 1: the job. These stories aren't just crazy when they are
• 0:29
Speaker 1: cautionary tales about lessons learned the hard way.
• 0:33
  Speaker 3: Let's get started.
• 0:35
Speaker 1: Hi, everyone, welcome back to the Bad Hire.
• 0:39
Speaker 2: Thank Morgan, you finally had We've been asking him to
• 0:42
Speaker 2: say it how you used to for a while.
• 0:44
Speaker 3: Now, all right, so welcome back. You glad to be here.
• 0:49
Speaker 3: I'm sure you are.

• 0:56
Speaker 1: dark contests. Don't forget to submit your stories. Best story
• 0:59
Speaker 1: of the win's ten thousand dollars. So how do you submit?
• 1:03
Speaker 1: You go to the Badhire dot com, go to the
• 1:05
Speaker 1: submit section, fill out the form, post your story. Make
• 1:10
Speaker 1: it a good one, can be happy, can be sad,
• 1:12
Speaker 1: can be tragic, whatever it is, But take the time
• 1:14
Speaker 1: write a great story, send it into us. We'll read it,
• 1:17
Speaker 1: or and if it's great, we'll read it. If it's
• 1:20
Speaker 1: really good, or you or you may be asked to
• 1:22
Speaker 1: come on the show and read it, or just be
• 1:24
Speaker 1: a guest and react whatever it might be. Yeah, so
• 1:26
Speaker 1: it could be fun. Then we can do that by
• 1:28
Speaker 1: flying you in, or we can do it I think
• 1:31
Speaker 1: via broadcast or via like a call in.
• 1:34
Speaker 3: So either way we're happy to do it. So that
• 1:36
  Speaker 3: should be fun.
• 1:37
Speaker 2: We should take phone calls one episode where you ask
• 1:39
Speaker 2: people to call in. Yeah, the stories. I got a
• 1:42
  Speaker 2: call from Hawaii.
• 1:44
Speaker 4: It's like like we're on a radio show. Yeah, okay,
• 1:46
Speaker 4: that would be fun.
• 1:47
Speaker 2: That'd be fun. I like that idea. If y'all like
• 1:50
Speaker 2: this idea, please drop it. Just gonna like subscribe, subscribe,
• 1:56
Speaker 2: drop a comment saying I would like to call in.
• 1:58
  Speaker 1: Thank you.
• 1:58
Speaker 3: So I'm just gonna do one today. And this one, uh,
• 2:03
  Speaker 3: this one.
• 2:06
Speaker 1: Just hit me, kind of hit me kind of hard
• 2:09
Speaker 1: in terms of just what this person's potentially battling.
• 2:13
  Speaker 3: And so.
• 2:15
Speaker 1: No, no, I'll share it and then you know, we
• 2:18
Speaker 1: can react to it and talk about it. So I
• 2:21
Speaker 1: had a young woman once who at the start looked
• 2:25
Speaker 1: like an absolute win. She showed up on time, professional polite,
• 2:30
Speaker 1: had a great office etiquette, and I remember thinking, finally,
• 2:34
Speaker 1: this is the jackpot higher. For a while, everything seemed fine.
• 2:37
Speaker 1: Then one day she went out for a smoke break
• 2:40
Speaker 1: and just never came back. The next morning, I asked
• 2:44
Speaker 1: what happened, and she looked at me, completely dazed, and
• 2:48
Speaker 1: swore she had come back. I pulled up the time
• 2:51
Speaker 1: clock and even the security cameras, nothing. She just shrugged
• 2:55
Speaker 1: and said she had no idea what I was talking about.
• 2:58
Speaker 1: From there, it went downhill fast. She started missing shifts.
• 3:03
Speaker 1: On a busy Friday, she was a no show and
• 3:05
  Speaker 1: I couldn't reach her.
• 3:06
  Speaker 3: Another employee who.
• 3:08
Speaker 1: Went out for lunch spotted her lying in the street
• 3:12
Speaker 1: outside the office intoxicated.
• 3:16
  Speaker 5: Oh.
• 3:17
Speaker 1: I went out to talk to her and she insisted
• 3:19
Speaker 1: she didn't even work that day.
• 3:21
Speaker 3: She literally ran away from me.
• 3:23
Speaker 1: She missed her Saturday shift too, then emailed me on
• 3:26
Speaker 1: Sunday claiming she had been in the hospital with a
• 3:28
Speaker 1: liver infection and promised she'd be back Monday with the
• 3:33
Speaker 1: doctor's note. Monday cane, no note. Tuesday came still no note.
• 3:38
Speaker 1: I finally told her I needed to see it immediately.
• 3:40
Speaker 1: I don't know why this note was such a big deal.
• 3:42
Speaker 1: She said she'd run home to grab it and never
• 3:45
Speaker 1: came back. The whole thing was such a bizarre spiral
• 3:49
Speaker 1: from perfect hire to completely vanishing, and to this day,
• 3:53
Speaker 1: I still don't know what really happened.
• 3:55
Speaker 2: Sounds like she had a mental bravely set down or
• 3:58
Speaker 2: sing with psychotic class or just you know, alcohol. Yeah,
• 4:03
Speaker 2: someone really say, Yeah, that's really sad.
• 4:05
Speaker 1: She she she's in the street drunk and you're and
• 4:09
Speaker 1: what got me here at the end is like, hey,
• 4:10
Speaker 1: I need to see that note, you know, like, yeah,
• 4:13
Speaker 1: she was intoxicated in the street. Yeah, you saw the
• 4:16
Speaker 1: indication that she's you know, you could see this kind
• 4:18
Speaker 1: of undoing. Uh, probably wasn't the time to demand a
• 4:23
Speaker 1: note for the mental breakdown. You know, you have to
• 4:25
Speaker 1: kind of read through. Someone who's suffering from alcohol or
• 4:30
Speaker 1: any other addiction would certainly want to try to cover
• 4:33
Speaker 1: that up. And you know, it would have been a
• 4:35
Speaker 1: great time for that manager just try to get some help.
• 4:39
Speaker 2: Yeah for sure, Yeah, for sure.
• 4:41
Speaker 1: And so you know, in my career, I've seen two,
• 4:46
Speaker 1: two or three people just wreck their you know, wreck
• 4:51
Speaker 1: their I won't say wreck their career, but certainly wrecked
• 4:53
Speaker 1: their position. You don't have to do a do over
• 4:57
Speaker 1: because because of alcohol. You know. So if if if
• 5:04
Speaker 1: you see someone as a leader, see someone and you
• 5:07
Speaker 1: recognize it, you know it, try you know, try first, and.
• 5:13
Speaker 2: You know they have a potential to be a good
• 5:15
Speaker 2: employee because they shown you they how to skills. And
• 5:18
Speaker 2: it just sounds like she's going through a rough time
• 5:19
  Speaker 2: in her right.
• 5:20
Speaker 1: So yeah, she was able to piece it together and
• 5:22
Speaker 1: hold it together for a while, and what should indicates
• 5:24
Speaker 1: she had you know, she just relapsed with it. So
• 5:28
  Speaker 1: I don't know, I think I don't think it's when
• 5:31
Speaker 1: I read the end of that, she's like, hey, this
• 5:32
  Speaker 1: is really bizarre, I'm like, it's really not. I've a
• 5:35
Speaker 1: kind of comment. I have people have these addictions that
• 5:38
Speaker 1: that and that is uh, you know, as leaders we
• 5:41
Speaker 1: can help people so and help its certainly help our team.
• 5:44
  Speaker 1: So that's all.
• 5:44
Speaker 3: That's the only one I had today I wanted to
• 5:46
  Speaker 3: chat about.
• 5:47
Speaker 1: I think just because I thought it was I thought
• 5:49
Speaker 1: it was meaningful, and I thought maybe the lesson here
• 5:52
Speaker 1: would be, you know, look for opportunities to intervene. You know,
• 5:57
Speaker 1: I'm as as an HR pro, you know, we deal
• 6:01
Speaker 1: with all the time people, you know, when some of
• 6:05
Speaker 1: the bad happens, and they almost always ask what did
• 6:08
Speaker 1: they pass their background check? To look at their back.
• 6:10
Speaker 1: They always want to go back and look and see
• 6:11
Speaker 1: if there is anything. And so you hear about the
• 6:15
Speaker 1: stories all the time, so you want to you know,
• 6:18
Speaker 1: I've just developed this kind of sense of a desire
• 6:23
Speaker 1: in our culture and to share with others. You know,
• 6:26
Speaker 1: these are the opportunities given to you as leaders to
• 6:29
Speaker 1: help someone right, and more times than not, it's still disappointing.
• 6:36
Speaker 1: It leads the disappointment art break for you as a
• 6:38
Speaker 1: leader trying to help.
• 6:40
Speaker 2: And you can also show your organization that you care
• 6:42
Speaker 2: about your employees. And I feel like that brings more
• 6:44
Speaker 2: of like like a spirit in your office of like
• 6:48
Speaker 2: that you are a good company and that you want
• 6:50
Speaker 2: to help others. And I think it will encourage others
• 6:52
Speaker 2: also be that kind of leader who grows out and
• 6:54
Speaker 2: helps others. So at the end of the day, I
• 6:56
Speaker 2: think it's a good teaching no matter what, even if
• 6:58
Speaker 2: it doesn't turn out the way you want to YEA,
• 7:00
Speaker 2: So it might touch somebody else who needs to hear
• 7:02
Speaker 2: that or be able to help somebody else.
• 7:05
Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, so good higher turn bad.
• 7:09
Speaker 2: Yeah, my stories are like complete three sixty that. These
• 7:13
Speaker 2: are crazy funny stories. This is a deep like this.
• 7:17
Speaker 1: Is a funny area.
• 7:19
Speaker 2: This is a deep, meaningful one that's very important. Y'all
• 7:22
Speaker 2: should take notes on this one. Mine is that so much? Yeah,
• 7:25
Speaker 2: mine's a little stupid, all right, just jumping straight in.
• 7:29
Speaker 2: Mine is titled The Curse of Live Television. So sometimes
• 7:33
Speaker 2: when you're about higher, like you just kind of sleep
• 7:35
Speaker 2: behind the scenes, like television like is there forever, you
• 7:38
Speaker 2: know what I mean, Like there's no going back from that.
• 7:40
Speaker 2: So anyways, It's April twentieth, twenty thirteen, and in Bismarck,
• 7:44
Speaker 2: North Dakota, a young man named ake AJ Clemente sorry guys,
• 7:50
Speaker 2: is about to make his big break. Fresh out of
• 7:52
Speaker 2: West Virginia University, Clemente has landed his first real TV
• 7:56
Speaker 2: news job at kfy RTV, thew NBC affiliate. It's his
• 8:01
Speaker 2: debut night, his very first live broadcast, and he's sitting
• 8:05
Speaker 2: at the anchor desk next to his co host. The
• 8:07
Speaker 2: cameras are about to roll. This is a kind of
• 8:09
Speaker 2: moment you dream about when you're chasing a career in journalism,
• 8:12
Speaker 2: but live television is unforgiving. As the show begins, Clemente
• 8:16
Speaker 2: fumbles and his script. Nervous, overwhelmed and thinking his mic
• 8:20
Speaker 2: is still muted, he mutters under his breath, fing s
• 8:27
Speaker 2: Unfortunately his mic wasn't muted. The words go out loud
• 8:30
Speaker 2: and clear across the state of North Dakota. His co
• 8:34
Speaker 2: anchor doesn't even flinch. She just keeps rolling for her
• 8:37
  Speaker 2: welcoming viewers.
• 8:39
Speaker 3: This march on that didn't happen.
• 8:41
Speaker 2: While AJ says they're frozen in the realization of just
• 8:44
Speaker 2: what happened. The control room panic, Oh my god. And
• 8:48
Speaker 2: you can tell, because I'm about to play the clip
• 8:50
Speaker 2: here in a little bit, you can tell. He's like internally, like,
• 8:53
Speaker 2: oh my gosh, what did I do to do? So
• 8:56
Speaker 2: the control room panics. Viewers are stunned, and within hours
• 8:59
Speaker 2: so's the Internet. Clips of the broadcast hit YouTube the
• 9:02
Speaker 2: same night, racking up hundreds of thousands of views. By
• 9:05
Speaker 2: the next day, AJ Clemente isn't just a rookie anchor anymore.
• 9:09
Speaker 2: He's trending worldwide. Social media mocks means explode, and national
• 9:14
Speaker 2: outlets are calling it one of the worst debutes in
• 9:16
Speaker 2: television history. Back at the station, there's no saving face.
• 9:20
Speaker 2: The dues director suspends him immediately, reminding staff of the
• 9:23
Speaker 2: golden rule broadcasting, always assume the mic is live. Within
• 9:27
Speaker 2: two days, Clementae is fired. His career in North Dakota
• 9:30
Speaker 2: ends before it really even begins. He tries to apologize,
• 9:33
Speaker 2: tweeting to his viewers that it was a rookie mistake
• 9:36
Speaker 2: and thanking everyone for the opportunity. He even explains later
• 9:39
Speaker 2: that he was practicing a line with the difficult name
• 9:42
Speaker 2: and let his frustrations slip. But the damage is done,
• 9:45
Speaker 2: and that's the curse of live television. One slip of
• 9:48
Speaker 2: the tongue, one nervous moment, can follow you forever. Clemente's
• 9:52
Speaker 2: debut was only a few seconds long, but thanks to
• 9:54
Speaker 2: the Internet, those seconds are immortal.
• 9:57
Speaker 4: It's kind of sad, not sad, but I and call
• 10:00
Speaker 4: him the bad highre. She's like, he was nervous. It
• 10:03
Speaker 4: just sucks a mistake.
• 10:04
Speaker 2: It that yeah, And I feel like, I mean sometimes
• 10:08
Speaker 2: you cuss at work like it just happened. But it's
• 10:11
Speaker 2: just sad because his is like on TV, so his work.
• 10:15
Speaker 1: If a camera was on you like all day line,
• 10:18
Speaker 1: just catching you know, Oh, I can't hold.
• 10:23
Speaker 2: I'd be on the stor right, I'm.
• 10:27
Speaker 1: A good So I feel I feel really bad for him, right, yeah,
• 10:31
Speaker 1: you know every Yeah, that's what young people do when
• 10:34
Speaker 1: they come to work. They make mistakes. Yeah, for sure,
• 10:36
Speaker 1: that's a high stakes deal. And I kind of feel
• 10:40
Speaker 1: like they escapegoaded him. It would not have been a
• 10:42
Speaker 1: big deal to be like, you know, because he actually
• 10:45
  Speaker 1: I thought he.
• 10:47
Speaker 3: You talk about how he handled it.
• 10:48
Speaker 1: He came back, he said, here's why happen.
• 10:51
  Speaker 3: I apologize.
• 10:52
Speaker 1: I think he said rookie mistake, you know, calls himself, Hey,
• 10:56
  Speaker 1: it's a rookie mistake.
• 10:58
Speaker 3: He is a rookie.
• 10:58
Speaker 1: You know that happens.
• 10:59
Speaker 2: He was a season person. This is his first night
• 11:02
Speaker 2: on live television. So yeah, I do feel bad for him,
• 11:05
  Speaker 2: I think, yeah.
• 11:06
Speaker 1: And it's I think about the number of people we
• 11:09
Speaker 1: see cuss on TV. Oh yeah, all the watch sports.
• 11:12
Speaker 3: There's guy's just beth vomit at left and right as you.
• 11:15
Speaker 1: Could absolutely reathe their lips as coaches and players, and
• 11:20
Speaker 1: they're like, oh yeah, and this guy makes a mistake.
• 11:23
Speaker 2: You're like, yeah, well this was what twenty thirteen?
• 11:25
Speaker 4: Is that very long time.
• 11:28
Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe it was. Maybe it was a different back fanly.
• 11:30
  Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know.
• 11:31
Speaker 2: He was kind of young, yeah, kids laughing like, okay
• 11:37
  Speaker 2: it was.
• 11:37
Speaker 4: It wasn't acceptable then but now yeah, just cuss away. Yeah.
• 11:41
Speaker 2: I feel like even sometimes sports casters like bad words
• 11:45
Speaker 2: now too, So I don't know. But anyways, my next
• 11:48
Speaker 2: story is called flying Low. That's the title of it.
• 11:51
Speaker 2: So picture this JFK International Airport, thousands of people moving
• 11:55
Speaker 2: through the terminals every hour. Behind the scenes, a man
• 11:58
Speaker 2: named Gerard, a security supervisor, is trying to build respect
• 12:03
Speaker 2: in a job where authority and professionalism matter.
• 12:08
Speaker 3: Is a fake name.
• 12:10
Speaker 2: I think I might go look and see that's his
• 12:12
Speaker 2: real name, because I feel like saying the full name
• 12:14
  Speaker 2: is takes.
• 12:15
Speaker 4: It really pretty interesting name to make up.
• 12:17
Speaker 2: Yeah, one Friday afternoon, he's asked to file a simple report,
• 12:21
Speaker 2: nothing dramatic, just a minor fender bender in the parking lot.
• 12:24
Speaker 2: He grabs his work issued BlackBerry, takes a few pictures
• 12:27
Speaker 2: of the dented cars, and starts typing up his summary.
• 12:31
Speaker 2: He attaches the photos, hitsind and off. The email goes
• 12:34
Speaker 2: to everyone, not just two people who needed it, more
• 12:37
Speaker 2: than two dozen coworkers, supervisors and even high level executives
• 12:42
Speaker 2: at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey
• 12:47
Speaker 2: happened Tucked in among the photos, the fender bender was
• 12:51
Speaker 2: something else, something not meant for work, an image of
• 12:55
Speaker 2: Robson himself waists down fully exposed. The email blast became instant, legend,
• 13:03
Speaker 2: phones buzzed, inbox pinged, and within minutes staff at JFK
• 13:07
Speaker 2: We're staring at disbelief. Was this real? Was it a joke?
• 13:11
Speaker 2: It wasn't a joke. Realizing what happened, Robson panicked and
• 13:16
Speaker 2: he tried to recall the email to delete the photo remotely,
• 13:19
Speaker 2: but it was too late. The damage was yep, and
• 13:23
Speaker 2: soon after a second email ended and everyone's inbox and
• 13:26
Speaker 2: apology his attempt to explain away the unexplainable. The Port
• 13:31
Speaker 2: Authority didn't find it funny, neither did FJC Security, his employer.
• 13:37
Speaker 2: Within days, Robson was fired, stripped of his security credentials,
• 13:40
Speaker 2: and banned from JFK entirely, so he can't even fly
• 13:43
Speaker 2: out of there anymore. A zero tolerance policy, they said.
• 13:47
Speaker 2: But the story didn't end there. The tabloids grabbed it.
• 13:50
Speaker 2: Headlines compared him to Anthony Weiner. Sites like Gothamist, Metro, Jezebel,
• 13:58
Speaker 2: and NBC ran peace Is with a mix of disbelief
• 14:01
Speaker 2: and dark humor. On forums and social media, people were ruthless,
• 14:05
Speaker 2: jokes flew meumes were made, and the accidental junk shot
• 14:09
Speaker 2: at jfpit K became one of those shraded workplace scandals
• 14:13
Speaker 2: that lives forever online. For Robson, it was the end
• 14:16
Speaker 2: of a career at the airport. For everyone else, it
• 14:18
Speaker 2: was a lesson double check your attachments, keep your personal
• 14:23
Speaker 2: and professional lives separate, and remember once you hit send, there's.
• 14:26
  Speaker 1: No going back.
• 14:27
  Speaker 4: Yeah Aan, Gerard.
• 14:29
  Speaker 3: Yeah, that's.
• 14:32
Speaker 2: Also it makes me laugh because he took those on
• 14:34
Speaker 2: his work BlackBerry BlackBerry.
• 14:37
Speaker 1: He was, Yeah, that makes it worse.
• 14:39
Speaker 2: Yeah, so like personal phone, you accidentally whatever, but your
• 14:43
Speaker 2: work issued BlackBerry doing it? Like who were you sending
• 14:47
  Speaker 2: them to before?
• 14:50
Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's so. I mean, yeah, the pictures themselves,
• 14:56
  Speaker 1: you know, Okay.
• 14:57
Speaker 2: Yeah whatever, you know, Yeah, will make mistakes. But because
• 15:02
Speaker 2: if you belong personal device that's not tied to work
• 15:04
Speaker 2: at all, this is obviously something that he had his
• 15:08
Speaker 2: work issued BlackBerry with.
• 15:09
Speaker 1: I can guarantee you that the humiliation of that, Yeah,
• 15:17
Speaker 1: He's like, I can find another job. Yeah, my god,
• 15:19
Speaker 1: these are my friends. I know these people.
• 15:21
Speaker 2: Yeah, because especially if it wasn't just a JFK where
• 15:23
Speaker 2: it was shown, it was all over the internet.
• 15:26
Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess the town lugs go.
• 15:27
Speaker 2: Anyways, we'll have to look up if that's his real name.
• 15:29

• 16:07
Speaker 1: to bchecks dot io. That's bc h ex dot io.
• 16:14
Speaker 3: All right, what do we got?
• 16:15
  Speaker 2: All?
• 16:15
  Speaker 5: Right?
• 16:16
  Speaker 2: Here we go.
• 16:17
Speaker 4: This sten's a little long, so bear with me. I
• 16:22
Speaker 4: work in HR for an organization that had not previously
• 16:25
Speaker 4: had an HR position, but had grown to the size
• 16:27
Speaker 4: that it was necessary. When I realized that not a
• 16:30
Speaker 4: single person in upper management cared nor wanted an HR
• 16:34
Speaker 4: department because it interfered with how they always done things.
• 16:40
Speaker 4: I ran as fast as I could. Here are some
• 16:42
Speaker 4: of the horror stories I encountered while employed there.
• 16:46
Speaker 3: That is a hard shift.
• 16:48
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 16:48
Speaker 1: Yeah, you know. HR professionals will bring some process rules, regulations,
• 16:55
Speaker 1: all stuff you need, but you ain't never had that.
• 16:58
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's just how we do things.
• 17:01
Speaker 4: Resistance Okay. The organization hired a woman for the business department.
• 17:07
Speaker 4: Candidates were limited as it was a smaller town. On paper,
• 17:10
Speaker 4: her resume looked pretty reasonable and experience looked as if
• 17:13
Speaker 4: it would fit well with fit well for the vacant position.
• 17:17
Speaker 4: Her interview was mediocre, if not subpar. When asked about
• 17:21
Speaker 4: her knowledge of Microsoft, officed she wasn't aware of what
• 17:25
Speaker 4: that was, had to explain it, and had to explain
• 17:30
Speaker 4: it was a suite of programs used to frequently used
• 17:32
Speaker 4: frequently in business settings, such as Word, Excel, Access, et cetera.
• 17:37
Speaker 4: She then explained she was familiar with said programs.
• 17:40
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I know those.
• 17:42
Speaker 2: Things yea, yeah, I just didn't know all of it
• 17:45
Speaker 2: together was Microsoft, honest mistake.
• 17:50
Speaker 4: She then, oh, wait, I just read that sorry. Hiring
• 17:55
Speaker 4: managers still thought she would be a good fit, went
• 17:57
Speaker 4: against my advice and hired her.
• 17:59
Speaker 2: Paul was a hiring Does it.
• 18:02
Speaker 4: Say after a month of training she still couldn't figure
• 18:05
Speaker 4: out how to handle email attachments, Excel or basic computer
• 18:09
Speaker 4: functions had to be let go? Did inability to perform
• 18:13
Speaker 4: even the most basic job functions. Same organization also routinely
• 18:17
Speaker 4: placed people in management positions without inadequate training, without adequate
• 18:21
Speaker 4: training or experience, and let said people hire people completely
• 18:26
Speaker 4: on their own without obtaining proper hiring paperwork, or had
• 18:30
Speaker 4: a manager once asking employee under the supervision for under
• 18:35
Speaker 4: their supervision for specific medical information regarding a workman's comp case.
• 18:40
Speaker 4: I had to intervene and explain that what she was
• 18:43
Speaker 4: asking was not legal nor information she needed to accommodate
• 18:47
Speaker 4: the injured employee. And that is all it says.
• 18:52
Speaker 1: Oh, that sounds like the bad hire was the company
• 18:56
Speaker 1: right she got to work for?
• 19:00
Speaker 3: Yes, a bad Well it's not really.
• 19:03
Speaker 5: Bad, I mean, yeah, yeah, but you know you should
• 19:08
Speaker 5: should have seen at least the red flag in the
• 19:10
Speaker 5: interview that you don't know what Microsoft Microsoft Office is.
• 19:15
Speaker 1: Of hr professional. They can go in someplace and take
• 19:18
Speaker 1: it from zero HR too.
• 19:21
Speaker 3: Yeah, all the way good r right.
• 19:24
Speaker 1: I mean to build the processes because it's going to
• 19:26
Speaker 1: be you're gonna have people doing things like the comp
• 19:29
Speaker 1: issue and just just like breaking the law and where
• 19:34
Speaker 1: they do things, and you know, the company at risk,
• 19:37
Speaker 1: but you know, tough to get tough to get them
• 19:40
Speaker 1: through that process so that they didn't new background checks
• 19:45
  Speaker 1: either before.
• 19:45
Speaker 4: She maybe not evidentely not if that's I'm sure that's
• 19:53
Speaker 4: not how they had always done things.
• 19:58
Speaker 1: We know these people were a small town.
• 20:00
Speaker 4: Yeah, of course, all right, here's my next one. I'm
• 20:04
Speaker 4: in HR now. But at the time was in a
• 20:09
Speaker 4: different job, so this story is settling. They were in
• 20:11
Speaker 4: a different job. Okay, So they hired this contractor to
• 20:14
Speaker 4: do some it work on the website. Guy seems nice,
• 20:17
Speaker 4: super eager to please. Then the weirdest weirdness started. Guy
• 20:22
Speaker 4: claimed he could not be arrested for any crime in
• 20:24
Speaker 4: any state in the USA due to his CIA creditge.
• 20:28
Speaker 4: Then he said he flies to the Playboy mansion every
• 20:32
Speaker 4: weekend a party and spends three thousand dollars on his
• 20:35
  Speaker 4: wife every week.
• 20:38
Speaker 2: Playboy and from the same.
• 20:43
Speaker 3: Mansion during the week.
• 20:44
Speaker 2: I'm just reading with the wife and the other time
• 20:46
Speaker 2: I was just reading what he wrote.
• 20:47
Speaker 4: Okay, Then he claims he not only works for US,
• 20:51
Speaker 4: but Microsoft, being a bunch of other.
• 20:54
  Speaker 2: Huge companies giants.
• 20:55
Speaker 4: Okay, he would set his phone, he had multiple phones,
• 21:00
Speaker 4: and he would take important fake calls, just on and on.
• 21:04
Speaker 4: The guy could not help himself with the lies, so
• 21:07
Speaker 4: another compulsive liar story. Finally, he went around telling everyone
• 21:11
Speaker 4: he was a hiring manager for the contract company he
• 21:14
Speaker 4: worked for and trying signing up full timers to work
• 21:17
Speaker 4: for this company because he would get five hundred dollars
• 21:21
Speaker 4: for each person he recommended. He also promised everyone huge
• 21:25
Speaker 4: raises if they did well. He was not a hiring manager,
• 21:29
Speaker 4: and when his boss found out, he was fired immediately. Ugh,
• 21:35
Speaker 4: what are y'all gonna learn to stop lying?
• 21:37
  Speaker 1: Yeah?
• 21:38
Speaker 2: It's also talking about the Playboy mansion with your employer
• 21:41
Speaker 2: is like, not something I would bring up. Maybe spoiling
• 21:44
  Speaker 2: your wife.
• 21:45
Speaker 1: Sure, I spent ton in it to tell people who
• 21:47
Speaker 1: was spending three hours a week for real.
• 21:50
Speaker 2: I'm like, I'm paying you too much you need Yeah?
• 21:54
Speaker 1: Oh, he's just said he's got five jobs, Yes, working
• 21:56
Speaker 1: for four or five companies. Garrison, that's a thing now
• 22:01
Speaker 1: people are working. You know, I've had it happen to me.
• 22:05
Speaker 1: I've you know, where people I believe it's happened to me.
• 22:07
Speaker 1: I know what's happened to me or people have done that,
• 22:09
Speaker 1: and it's it's crazy. Offshoring your work is now a
• 22:14
Speaker 1: thing like you get somebody, you you get paid, then
• 22:17
Speaker 1: you hire someone them somewhere else and then they do
• 22:21
  Speaker 1: your work.
• 22:21
Speaker 3: They go to your email.
• 22:22
Speaker 1: There, you know, they sign in as you, they stay active.
• 22:26
Speaker 2: I just feel like you're robbing yourself of like the responsibilities.
• 22:30
Speaker 1: That you have the moral character to do. That is Yeah,
• 22:36
  Speaker 1: it's not cool. Yeah, I don't know. I don't know
• 22:39
Speaker 1: how to build culture. You can't build great culture with
• 22:42
Speaker 1: a bunch of people like that. And I mean everyone
• 22:45
Speaker 1: calls me crazy and says I'm I'm you know, it's
• 22:48
Speaker 1: just because I'm I'm old or not in the generation
• 22:50
Speaker 1: of of I've never heard crazy, but not the you know,
• 22:56
Speaker 1: not really loving remote work. Even though we have a
• 22:59
Speaker 1: chunk of our staff work remote. There are some you know,
• 23:02
Speaker 1: it's it's been more disaster and more positive. And I
• 23:06
Speaker 1: hear people all the time throw stuff around, going, oh
• 23:09
Speaker 1: it's so much more productive. Yeah, we've got real tools
• 23:13
Speaker 1: that measure real productivity, and it is not an absolute Yeah.
• 23:18
Speaker 2: In my experience, I feel more connected to the company
• 23:20
Speaker 2: in the mission when I'm here every day, like when
• 23:22
Speaker 2: I see everybody around me and I can connect with
• 23:24
Speaker 2: them face to face. I just feel more present in
• 23:27
Speaker 2: my work, and I do one passionate about all the
• 23:30
Speaker 2: work I do for my company. When I'm home, I'm disconnected.
• 23:33
Speaker 2: I don't care as nearly as much as when I'm
• 23:35
  Speaker 2: in here, Like.
• 23:37
Speaker 1: There's I think there are people who are good at it, right,
• 23:39
Speaker 1: and so I'm not like a, you know, hey, this
• 23:44
Speaker 1: is bad. What I have, what I have learned doing
• 23:47
Speaker 1: this through a lot of people, is that there are
• 23:50
Speaker 1: certain jobs that are good for it, and there are
• 23:53
Speaker 1: certain people that are good for it, and you have
• 23:56
Speaker 1: to have both for it to be successful. Sure, if
• 23:59
Speaker 1: any one of those as missing, then you probably it's
• 24:03
Speaker 1: probably going to lead to, you know, outcomes that you
• 24:05
  Speaker 1: don't want. But I don't know for sure. A lot
• 24:08
Speaker 1: of story reminding me of, yeah, that's probably because he was.
• 24:11
Speaker 3: Working working for multiple jobs. Because you don't. You can't.
• 24:15
Speaker 3: It's tough to do that.
• 24:16
Speaker 1: It's tough to do that way you're here, which sounded
• 24:18
Speaker 1: like he was actually there, like setting up the you
• 24:21
Speaker 1: can't give your there's my Microsoft phone, this is my phone.
• 24:25
Speaker 2: Yeah, it's crazy if he was even working for those
• 24:29
Speaker 2: people who Yeah, no, that was total.
• 24:32
Speaker 4: All right, I've got one more. I had an employee
• 24:35
Speaker 4: who had a workplace accident that we don't believe happened
• 24:38
Speaker 4: at work. She offered modified work. We offered modified work,
• 24:43
Speaker 4: and she took this to mean she could take as
• 24:44
Speaker 4: many breaks as she wanted. She did little work during
• 24:47
Speaker 4: her shift. When she was called out by it by
• 24:50
Speaker 4: a supervisor, she replied that she was injured and could
• 24:53
Speaker 4: do what she wanted. We started progressive discipline to adjust
• 24:57
Speaker 4: the behavior. She brought in a letter from medical practitioner
• 25:01
Speaker 4: that states she needed to take micro breaks to rest
• 25:06
Speaker 4: her injured body part. It doesn't say if it's her
• 25:08
Speaker 4: leg or her arm, it just sus body part him.
• 25:12
Speaker 4: Over a period of a few months, she was suspended
• 25:14
Speaker 4: for leaving work without permission because she didn't like a
• 25:16
Speaker 4: conversation she had with HR. She was still abusing the
• 25:20
Speaker 4: micro breaks to hide in the bathroom.
• 25:23
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 25:24
Speaker 4: Her manager and I met with her to talk about
• 25:27
Speaker 4: how she was seen with her feet up on the
• 25:30
Speaker 4: desk instead of working. This person lost it. The manager
• 25:35
Speaker 4: called the meeting to an end after two minutes and
• 25:37
Speaker 4: told her to leave the workplace. Now I had an
• 25:40
Speaker 4: idea this meeting wouldn't go well, so I had her biggest,
• 25:43
Speaker 4: most intimidating supervisor outside the meeting.
• 25:48
Speaker 1: After being right there.
• 25:50
Speaker 4: After being told to leave the building, the employee continued
• 25:53
  Speaker 4: to lose it.
• 25:54
Speaker 2: Yelling in red face.
• 25:56
Speaker 4: She came at me twice while my supervisor got between
• 25:59
Speaker 4: us and tried to get to leave the premises. The
• 26:01
Speaker 4: employe only left with threat of calling the police. The
• 26:06
Speaker 4: workplace was put on lockdown for fourteen days while we
• 26:09
Speaker 4: dealt with some logistical issues.
• 26:11
  Speaker 2: Fourteen days.
• 26:12
Speaker 4: She doesn't work for us anymore, and there's a bunch
• 26:14
Speaker 4: of legal stuff going on, so can't elaborate. I was
• 26:18
Speaker 4: convinced she would have attacked me without my supervisor presidence.
• 26:22
Speaker 2: So what do they do for the fourteen days when
• 26:24
Speaker 2: it just not work?
• 26:25
  Speaker 4: Not sure?
• 26:26
Speaker 2: And what's difficult? Does that mean security?
• 26:28
  Speaker 1: Like?
• 26:28
Speaker 2: For yeah, it didn't say, Okay.
• 26:32
  Speaker 4: I don't know HR anyone.
• 26:33
Speaker 1: HR pros are just warriors. Yeah, you know the stuff
• 26:37
Speaker 1: they have to deal with? Yeah, right, And that person
• 26:41
Speaker 1: it's like, how often people just try to take advantage? Yeah, right,
• 26:46
Speaker 1: and your line to defenses those hr pros, who are she?
• 26:50
Speaker 1: You know, she used the term progressive discipline. I was like, oh,
• 26:53
Speaker 1: that's so hr pro. Yeah, it's progressive boosting here, you know, yeah,
• 26:59
Speaker 1: don't you know? So like so like the manager then
• 27:04
Speaker 1: just went straight to the end of.
• 27:04
Speaker 2: The progressive fire to get out. Yeah. I don't blame
• 27:09
Speaker 2: them either. I would do the same thing, Like that's
• 27:11
Speaker 2: a lot to get up in somebody's face. And I
• 27:14
Speaker 2: love how he had the.
• 27:15
Speaker 4: SUPERFUSI waiting outside the doors.
• 27:17
Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, well you know, I will.
• 27:22
Speaker 6: I hate to call the first the first story the tory.
• 27:24
Speaker 6: I still a bad hire, but you know, the you know,
• 27:26
Speaker 6: the reality is that didn't work out. So but these
• 27:29
Speaker 6: stories are just a reminder that it's a couple of them.
• 27:32
Speaker 6: We hear all, you know, you hear these all these
• 27:33
Speaker 6: stories is like, yeah, started out great. Yeah, it's like
• 27:37
  Speaker 6: start here.
• 27:38
Speaker 1: And then sometimes it's like a cliff yeah, you know,
• 27:42
Speaker 1: and then you know, ends bad. And it started out
• 27:44
Speaker 1: as perfect ended up disappearing. You know, it turned out
• 27:48
Speaker 1: to be a bad hire. Yeah, you know, the jury,
• 27:51
Speaker 1: the jury's out on on employees for a while. And
• 27:56
Speaker 1: what's interesting in some of these stories. Some happened right away,
• 27:59
Speaker 1: like day one is like day one is like a
• 28:01
Speaker 1: big deal. There's like a lot of Day one stories,
• 28:02
Speaker 1: right and then there's others where it's like way down
• 28:08
Speaker 1: the line, yeah, you know, two years, three years down
• 28:12
Speaker 1: the line, there's you know, some some incidents and somebody finally,
• 28:18
Speaker 1: you know, I don't know. For me, it speaks to
• 28:20
Speaker 1: culture and how hard it is to hang on to
• 28:22
Speaker 1: great people and the type of environment you have to
• 28:25
Speaker 1: build where people don't get worn down into a place
• 28:27
Speaker 1: to have some type of I agree, breakdown like that. Yeah.
• 28:32
Speaker 3: Well, thanks, y'all, y'all rock it.
• 28:34
Speaker 4: You like love stories?
• 28:35
Speaker 2: Yeah, a lot of funny story.
• 28:37
Speaker 1: You would these the poor dude on TV.
• 28:44
Speaker 2: Mal Oh my gosh, I feel bad and flying Low.
• 28:47
Speaker 2: I like flying Low.
• 28:50
  Speaker 4: Yeah, tragic?
• 28:51
Speaker 1: All right, But don't forget our contest the ten thousand dollars.

• 29:10
Speaker 1: on a pat on a podcast, what you'd like to
• 29:11
  Speaker 1: hear it told.
• 29:12
Speaker 3: It could be happy, it can be sad, it could
• 29:14
  Speaker 3: be tragic.
• 29:14
Speaker 1: Whatever it might be, doesn't doesn't doesn't have to be
• 29:17
Speaker 1: one genre another. But send it in and we'd love

• 29:30
Speaker 3: That would be fun.
• 29:31
Speaker 1: Or you could you know, video conference into the show
• 29:34
Speaker 1: to tell your story. So either way that might be
• 29:37
Speaker 1: that won't be cool. But you can stay anonymous. You
• 29:40
Speaker 1: do have to tell us who you are, but you
• 29:42
