- 0:07New York Yankees faced the Kansas City Athletics at Municipal Stadium for a Sunday double header
- 0:11on September 14, 1958.
- 0:15The Yankees were managed by Casey Stengel and were looking to make it back to the World
- 0:18Series after losing to the Braves in 1957.
- 0:21They entered this game with a magic number of one, looking to clinch their 10th pennant
- 0:25in 12 seasons.
- 0:28The Kansas City was managed by Harry Kraft in his first season leading the athletics.
- 0:32They entered this game with a 67-74 record and were on their way to having a respectable
- 0:36year after five straight seasons with more than 90 losses.
- 0:40This audio recording is from the Yankees Radio broadcast of Game 1 of the Double Header,
- 0:44featuring announcers Phil Rizzuto and Mel Allen.
- 0:47Looking out on the ballpark, it's a pretty daylight scene, of course.
- 0:51Blue sky around bright sunshine.
- 0:53You see that Kansas is corn country or wheat country, and the greatest harvest is usually
- 0:59a yellow or a gold color.
- 1:00Today in the ballpark at Kansas City, I'd say that the green grass is greener than it's
- 1:05ever been.
- 1:06The management under the direction of their consultants concerning the grass and keeping
- 1:14it afield, glad it's a new seed, and it's really coming to a bloom, apparently, because
- 1:19the Kansas Park, Kansas City Park is one of the greenest of any in the league at this
- 1:24point in the season.
- 1:25They'll be playing on the time of the moment.
- 1:28Here's the batting order for today in the first game.
- 1:31Starting lineup for the visiting New York Yankees, Norm Siebern in left field, Norm Siebern
- 1:37leading off playing in left field.
- 1:39Batting second at second base, Gil McDougal, Mickey Mantle, M Centerfield, batting third.
- 1:45Batting cleanup today in game number one, playing in right field will be Enos Country
- 1:50Slaughter.
- 1:51Batting fifth and catching Elston Hard.
- 1:53Batting sixth at first base, Louis Scowen.
- 1:57Batting seventh at shortstop, Tony Kubeck.
- 2:00Batting eighth today at third base will be Bobby Richardson, and batting ninth and pitching,
- 2:06Duke Moss.
- 2:07While the Kansas City athletic hallman standing, Bill Tuttle will lead off and play on center
- 2:13field, batting number one, Bill Tuttle in center field.
- 2:17Roger Marath will bat second in right field.
- 2:20Hector Lopez will bat third and play a second base.
- 2:24Batting cleanup, a homerun leader in the league for, well, almost since his beginning.
- 2:29This year Bob Cerf in left field.
- 2:31Preston Ward will bat fifth at first base.
- 2:34First baseman, Preston Ward, batting number five.
- 2:36Batting sixth at third base will be Al Smith.
- 2:39Batting seventh and catching will be Frank House.
- 2:43Batting eighth at shortstop, Gilda Bastery.
- 2:45Batting ninth and pitching.
- 2:47A fellow who was at one time a Yankee property, fated to Kansas City, is most anxious always
- 2:52to show a victory against the old team.
- 2:54So he'll face them again probably for the last time this year, Ralph Terry.
- 2:59Ralph Terry, as they probably, it is the last time that he'll have a starting assignment
- 3:04against them in the second game.
- 3:06The pitcher for Kansas City hasn't been posted, but he probably will be during the first
- 3:09game.
- 3:10The umpires are due at the moment as home plate with Vanity Casey Stengel and the Kansas
- 3:17City athletic spot.
- 3:18And the two of them will once again check the infield road and playing dimensions and
- 3:25then we'll have a double header in full swing.
- 3:29Don't forget your Atlantic dealer advises now through all the area, serve by our home
- 3:35of champions network.
- 3:36Winterize soon and make sure that your car is kept safe for the cold weather change.
- 3:42Over the temperatures in some areas have already plunged to just around the freezing point.
- 3:47Atlantic dealers remind you that it's not too early to winterize.
- 3:50Make sure your car is all set.
- 3:52The chillier fall days and then the winter days to follow.
- 3:56In every season, baseball season or winter fall, you make sure you see your Atlantic dealer.
- 4:02He's the man to keep your car happily, powerfully, economically on the go.
- 4:09The Yankees by winning a game, maybe the first or second, or the Chicago White Sox should
- 4:15say lose, would give the Yankees their pennant for 1958.
- 4:20Of course they're so close now as the assurance of the tie after Gil McGoogle's being the
- 4:27hero of yesterday's game, put them ahead with a three-run home run blast, final score five
- 4:33to four.
- 4:34They'd like to go out and win the game that will give them their flag.
- 4:38But should they lose the first, meanwhile Chicago should win or lose their first game
- 4:44today, as the Yankees would either win it or be backed into the play.
- 4:49The situation remains to put it bluntly that today is the day that the Yankees will clinch
- 4:54their flag and it's just a matter of minutes or hours as to when it comes.
- 5:01And the outfielders then bring up throwing the ball around.
- 5:05In the background you can hear that electric organ that is part of a scene here all with
- 5:11Kansas City.
- 5:12We might as well turn it over to Phil Rizzuto.
- 5:14I have to play by play.
- 5:15Mike, you're following me and telling me more about that.
- 5:17Pretty scene.
- 5:18Fresh green grass and a beautifully cultivated diamond that wears sunny bright.
- 5:25The 121 strikeout this year.
- 5:28He leaves the Kansas City pitching staff in that department.
- 5:33Ed Garver leaves the eight and total amount of wins with 12.
- 5:39And the lead up spot today swinging two big bats talking with Hill McDover.
- 5:49Yankees kind of keyed up a little bit.
- 6:01They would like to win this game and leave no doubt as to who was the best team in the
- 6:06American League.
- 6:07The magic number is one.
- 6:09Any combination of a white-sox defeat or Yankees victory will cinch the 24th clinic for the
- 6:17New York Intergate and the night under the management of Casey Sinclair.
- 6:25Frank Lucetti goes down to third base coaching box.
- 6:28Ralph Hout is over at first.
- 6:30He whips the ball around and fails.
- 6:37We're ready to go.
- 6:38Seabrood, batting 304, 17-double, four trebles, 12 homers and 46 runs batting in.
- 6:44Steps in on the bat at the start.
- 6:46The wind whipping the ball players' pants and shirts.
- 6:51Seabrood steps in.
- 6:52Here's the first pitch of the ball game.
- 6:54The curve is low ball one.
- 7:05How Smith's playing even with third is the wind-up.
- 7:07The curve is strike one cold on the outside corner.
- 7:10Jerry has thrown two exchange-up curve balls up there with this wind blowing out.
- 7:15Looks like Ralph wants Yankees to supply their own power.
- 7:18When you throw the fastball, any connect, of course, it goes a lot further.
- 7:23Here's the 1-1-6 fastball that's hit in the ground at first base.
- 7:26Fastballed up with it.
- 7:27Flips the carry-carving in time for the out.
- 7:31Ralph Terry coming over to cover first base.
- 7:34Had a difficult play.
- 7:35Fastballed through the ball over again.
- 7:37And it's one away.
- 7:39And the first base comes to the pitcher and he has killed McGoogal.
- 7:42A hero of yesterday's ball game.
- 7:44He'll hom it with 202 out in the eighth inning.
- 7:48He'll batting 248.
- 7:50He has 16-doubles.
- 7:51One triple.
- 7:5213 homers and 60 runs batting in.
- 7:55Terry pitching with a modified no wind-up delivery.
- 8:00Hodes the ball in front of him and then brings his hands down and then over his head.
- 8:03Here's the first pitch to Gale.
- 8:05The curve is strike one cold on the outside corner.
- 8:12A tremendous crowd here again today to see the final appearance of Yankees here at Municipal Stadium.
- 8:18There's always been a terrific town attendance wise for the Yankees to come in.
- 8:25Here's the one strike pitch to McGoogal.
- 8:27Outside ball one one one.
- 8:33And there was a threat of rain.
- 8:35As a matter of fact the weather man last night gave a prediction of rain early in the afternoon.
- 8:40But this wind that's been blowing seems to have blown the dark clouds away.
- 8:45There are some light clouds overhead but pretty clear.
- 8:47Here's the one one pitch to Gale.
- 8:49Ball two just above the letters.
- 8:51Two and one on McGoogal.
- 9:01Now Terry checks the turn from Frank Hauss.
- 9:05Here's the pitch to McGoogal.
- 9:06The curve is just above the letters again.
- 9:08Ball three three and one.
- 9:10He's around the plate but just a little high with his pitches.
- 9:14On deck Mickey Mato.
- 9:24Terry sets in the mound.
- 9:27A three one pitch to McGoogal swings and misses strike two as...
- 9:30Well Terry took a little bit off his curve ball.
- 9:33Here looking for the fast ball and a three one pitch going for the long ball.
- 9:39It was way out in front. Now we're ready for the playoff pitch to McGoogal.
- 9:44Here it is.
- 9:46Low outside ball four. He changed up on the curve and missed the corner.
- 9:50There's the first base runner of the afternoon. Gale McGoogal.
- 9:52And here's Mickey Mato.
- 10:01Mickey is batting three oh four. Nineteen doubles one triple. Forty homers and eighty seven runs batting in.
- 10:12Preston Ward holding first base against Gale McGoogal.
- 10:16Here's the stretch.
- 10:19Low inside ball one.
- 10:35Here's the stretch as McGoogal leads off first. Fast ball is low ball two two nothing.
- 10:50Two balls no strike to count on Mato. One away. We're in the top of the first no score.
- 10:54First game of the big double head up.
- 11:00Harry sets on the mound. Pitch to Mickey is strike one call on the outside corner.
- 11:09He wants to know how you'll be able to here build some and yell out straight or foul.
- 11:14Or if they ever get hit with a foul tip on his foot you'll hear him scream.
- 11:21The second one pitch is Jack swing in the short center field. Tuddle digging hurt and make the catch.
- 11:30Short center field. Mickey has had trouble like that in the last three days.
- 11:32But the only difference is in Chicago he came up with two base pitch ducking out of the way of inside pitches.
- 11:37That time he ducked out of the way. The ball went his best.
- 11:40And with the wind blowing the ball went into short center field for our number two in his country's slaughter batting in the cleanup spot.
- 11:48The slaughter batting 319 has two doubles. One triple. Four homers and 16 runs battered in.
- 12:00Harry ready to pitch the slaughter. There's a quick strike one call on the inside corner.
- 12:15Harry sets again. Pitch the slaughter swing and a miss. Great two on a changeup.
- 12:20Beautiful motion on that pitch and in the country was really fooled by it.
- 12:25Matter of fact the swan whoop his front foot the left one was high in the air trying to regain his balance.
- 12:31Now begin two on slaughter. Here's the stretch. The pitch. He's in the dirt house knocked it down.
- 12:35He goes to Google the second throw and Gillis takes the second and a beautiful fade away snipe by Gail McDougal
- 12:42who's put driver bag in tag with his hand as the mainstream lungs form.
- 12:48And that will probably cause a wild fish as the ball hit the dirt in front of the plate.
- 12:52Frank House blocked it. Wild fish.
- 12:59Official scorers is seeing that eye with me as he can leave me here.
- 13:03I'm seeing that eye with that. That's the difference. But there the score is. OK Ripley.
- 13:11McDougal is in scoring position down at second base. Very stretches.
- 13:16Curve is fouled in front of the plate and House made a nice play. A very smart play by Frank House
- 13:23who as the ball hit the ground slapped at it to keep it in fair territory because he saw that slaughter was not running.
- 13:29There was a little bouncer in front of the plate that was curving foul.
- 13:32So House very widely slapped the ball in a fair territory but Bill Summers on the play said the ball hit in foul territory
- 13:38and on the ball. Frank House got his glove on the ball.
- 13:43These ball players are always thinking. One ball two strikes on slaughter. Two out. McDougal at second.
- 13:50In the top of the first no score in the ball game.
- 13:54Old glory really blowing up the center field.
- 14:04The stretch by Terry. That's the slaughter is just outside ball two two and two.
- 14:21Terry steps back off the mound. Now he's ready. Put his glove on his left knee.
- 14:25He's hiding the ball behind his back as he checks the sign from Frank House.
- 14:33There can plenty of time out there. Throw the no step out of the box.
- 14:38Got me nervous up there and slaughter finally steps out of the box.
- 14:43I mean when you're set up there and that pitch it takes extra time you sort of tighten up
- 14:47and the best thing to do is step back or take that deep breath that Bob Turley takes between pitches.
- 14:52Now we're ready. The pitch to slaughter. The curve is hit.
- 14:54Face hit the right field and slaughter. McDougal will score that slaughter around first.
- 14:59He goes to the plate and knocked down and gets play.
- 15:03Frank House has wrapped Terry hit the ball with his bare hands.
- 15:06Slaughter goes down to second base. Grounds it and then holds on.
- 15:09That'll be a single for Slaughter driving in Gil McDougal and there will be an error on the play.
- 15:18Ralph Terry is charged with an error as he stuck out his bare hand and deflected the ball away from Frank House.
- 15:26So Ines Slaughter singles to drive in Gil McDougal and the Yankees lead one or nothing here on the top of the first inning.
- 15:35For Slaughter that says 17th RBI of the year.
- 15:40Country used mostly as a pinch hitter and a real good one. Here's Elston Howard.
- 15:45Now we're doing the catching today, betting 329.
- 15:49The first pitch to Howard is a curve swings and misses strike one on a high curve ball.
- 15:54Kelly has 18 doubles, 5 trebles, 11 homers and 64 runs battered in.
- 15:59Terry sets.
- 16:09That's what was hit in the ground, in the hole, the Mastry there. The long throw to first.
- 16:14He and Simon have beautiful play by Joe the Mastry.
- 16:17I tell you that ball was way in the hole. He fielded on the edge of the outfield grass
- 16:22and it's throw just in time to get Howard for the Yankees in the top of the first one run.
- 16:26One hit, one Kansas City error, one man left on base.
- 16:30The score at the end of one half inning of play, the Yankees won and Kansas City coming to bat.

- 17:43The double header that will see the Yankees clinch their pen for 1958.
- 17:47In action elsewhere in the American League and also in the National League quite a program
- 17:53and the scores, Phil and Mel will keep you posted on as we go through the double header today.
- 17:58Duke Moss is on the flag for Casey and Bill Tunnel will lead off against him for Kansas City.
- 18:05Delgust 1-9 lost 8 on the season.
- 18:15Coaching at third, Bob Swift over at first, now half of 40 days.
- 18:22Duke Moss under the wind-up. Here's the first pitch to Tunnel. Strike one call.
- 18:34Tunnel wearing uniform number 13. Only one in the American League to wear that number.
- 18:42Chokes up a little bit on the right hand here. Swings a slow ground ball.
- 18:48Rages and cuts in front of. Go back, flips the scour and 40 out, one away.
- 18:53Oh, that makes it easy for a short step. When you've got a third baseman that can come in and get those slow hops,
- 18:59you can play a lot deeper and cover more ground. One out here is Roger Maris.
- 19:04The right fielder. Maris, betting only 246 but he has 18 doubles, 4 triples, 25 homers and 73 runs.
- 19:14That's fair heading out, Fielder. Plenty of power.
- 19:23Here's the first pitch to Maris. Swings and follows the pitch in the seats down the right fielder. Strike one.
- 19:31Elton Howard rubbing up a new baseball.
- 19:48Turn it into a real nice day here in Kansas City.
- 19:55Moss ready. The curve is just outside ball 111.
- 20:04It's 330 down the left fielder line, 353 down the right fielder line, 421 in dead center.
- 20:13William Fielder's wearing glasses. What a day off, Fielder.
- 20:18That ball is at high in the air, right fielder, way back there.
- 20:23And curving far over the fence, way back up on the hill, situated between the fence on the playing field
- 20:29and the double fence, which is about 60 or 70 feet back of the first fence, with a real landing hill.
- 20:38Fielder runs up and gets the ball. That ball had plenty of distance, but just pulled far.
- 20:49And as we told you, anything that's hit fairly good up in the air is going to be trouble.
- 20:55Wind is blowing from 20 to 25 miles per hour today and blowing out in favor of the batters.
- 21:02One ball, two strikes on Roger Maris. One out, nobody arm around the bottom of the first. The Yankees lead one or nothing.
- 21:10Moss swings into his windup. The curve is high ball two. Maris starting to swing checks in time. Two and two.
- 21:22Roger Maris digging a big hole at home plate.
- 21:38Moss is ready. The windup, the two-two pitch is just outside ball three. Three and two.
- 21:55Here's the count. Maris is working very slow, these past few games on the run, but it's helping.
- 22:11Here's the payoff pitch. A foul back against the screen. Count holds a three and two.
- 22:17Chance is sitting. There's two games out of fifth place and two and a half games out of fourth place. Chance to finish in the first division.
- 22:26You know they're going to be bearing down in this doubleheader.
- 22:39Moss rubbing up a new baseball.
- 22:50Takes her up one sign. Maris ready. The payoff pitch is high in the air at a right center fair. Not deep though.
- 22:59Mantle coming in and makes the catch and writes in a fair. Two away and that'll bring up Hector Lopez in the second baseman.
- 23:13Lopez has been 261. He has 24 doubles, three triples, 16 homers and 65 runs.
- 23:28Here's the right hand headed, choking up on the bat. Has a closed stance.
- 23:34First pitch is Maris back against the screen. Strike one.
- 23:42Hector hit three homers in one ball game right here at Kansas City earlier in the year, not against the Yankees.
- 23:50Austin Ward has three homers in one game just the other day. Two out here in the bottom of the first.
- 24:08Here's the pitch. Strike two calls, sharp breaking curve ball.
- 24:24Nothing in two.
- 24:32Here's the pitch. A just outside ball one. Duke Moss trying to cross up Lopez with a fast ball just missing outside.
- 24:49The man still pouring in here at Municipal Stadium. Wind up by Duke Moss. The curve is low just below the knees ball. Two, two and two.
- 25:09Mass really working slow and deliberate here.
- 25:13고 series ball game down in Chicago there's the ground ball half and 32ss backs up trouble that flips to.
- 25:34In time for the outnice. Throw by Bobby Richardson through that fourth left footer.
- 25:39He had a backup on that hard hop. For the Kansas City A's in the bottom of the first. No runs.
- 25:44No hits. No Yankee errors in nobody left. The score at the end of one full inning.
- 25:49Yankees, one and Kansas City nothing. Here the scores in the American League.
- 25:56Double headers. All double headers being played today.
- 25:59In the first game the White Sox four, the Senators one at the end of five. Fischer against Pierce.
- 26:04Royce Severs in the home run of the second inning for the Senators.
- 26:08In the first of two, Bollemore at Cleveland, the Indians, Leigh De Orioles, seven to three at the end of eight.
- 26:15Zubrick against Furetsy. Vic Power homer in the third with two on. Rocky Calavito it is 36th home in the fourth with one on.
- 26:21And then Calavito it is 37th home run in the sixth inning. Rocky has two homers.
- 26:26Closing in on Mickey Mato. The first game for double head of the Tigers three. Boston nothing at the end of four and a half.
- 26:33Sullivan against Fournilly. In the National League. Milwaukee three. The Dodgers one at the end of four.
- 26:38Drives down against Bewell. And Cockham in the second with one on.
- 26:41The Cardinals five and the Phillies two at the end of seven and a half. Jones against Ericsson.
- 26:46Norrin and Cunningham homer in that game for the Cardinals. The Pirates defeated the Cubs in the first of two.
- 26:51Five to four. Porter feeling relief for Winter Hillman and Relief for Loser. Tanner homer in the second.
- 26:56And in the first of two Cincinnati leads the Giants. Porter three at the end of six and a half.
- 27:01Miller against Hale Robinson. Hulman in the fourth inning for Cincinnati.
- 27:05Bill Scowern leading off for the New York Yankees.
- 27:11The first pistol Scowern has a swing and a miss strike one. Scowern batting 280.
- 27:1722 doubles. Three triples. 14 homers and 73 runs battered in.
- 27:22One and nothing in favor of the Yankees here in the top of the second.
- 27:28Curve is in the dirt ball one one one.
- 27:38On deck Tony Kubeck.
- 27:43Wind up by Terry. Fastball swings and misses strike two.
- 27:49Most has been missing a lot of fastballs. Seems to be swinging right through them.
- 27:55Scowern hits and streaks that way. He'll go for a few days.
- 27:59Fucking bad at the play but then he'll come back and hit everything in sight.
- 28:03That she is high inside. Most has to duck out of the way. Two and two of the counts.
- 28:08This time Terry goes into a double pump. The pitch to Scowern has hit high in the air to center field.
- 28:24But he got the ball on the handle part of the bat. Tuttle under it.
- 28:27Makes the catch for out number one.
- 28:30Outside of Merris is Longfowl over the fifth. No one's hit the ball.
- 28:34He's down in the air to take advantage of the wind.
- 28:38And it's really whipping here. Here's Tony Kubeck.
- 28:42Adding two seventy two.
- 28:45Kubeck has twenty one doubles. Two homers. Forty eight runs battered in.
- 28:51Tony stands deep in the box with his back foot against the far line of the bat is box.
- 29:00He takes the curve low ball one.
- 29:11The one nothing pitches the ground ball to second base.
- 29:14Hector Lopez up over the Preston Ward and his two away.
- 29:19That'll bring up little Bobby Richards in the third baseman.
- 29:22Richards comes batting two seventeen.
- 29:25He's got ten runs battered in.
- 29:31Bobby is certainly amazed the Yankees and the fans with his fine play of third base.
- 29:38Nobody ever thought he had an arm that would allow him to play third but he can make that long throw.
- 29:45There's a ground ball one hop to Hal Smith at third.
- 29:49The throw to Preston Ward three out.
- 29:52The Yankees in the top of the second. No runs no hits no a's there is nobody left on base to score at the end of an inning and a half.
- 29:59The Yankees one Kansas City nothing.
- 30:01Well they've been building on up highways this summer and they're all dedicated to making things smoother faster safer and easier for your automobile travel in the years to come.
- 30:13See those big earth movers and bulldozers moving along that grading around and you say to yourself it takes great power.

- 1:03:51It's swung on, looped out over short and the ball is dropping in there for a base hit.
- 1:04:06I don't really care about that rock and roll.

- 1:04:37Duke Mars punched the ball down the first base line to Preston Ward.
- 1:04:41He tosses the hecto lopez covering for the sacrifice.
- 1:04:45I don't know if it's a good thing, but I'm going to give it a second.

- 1:08:39Jimmy Uol, the ace trainer goes out to check with Demacry.
- 1:08:46A remarkable play on it. Jimmy Uol checking with Joe Demacry right now and it keeps her on from coming home.
- 1:09:10Okay, hangs in there. Two down now, Siebrin remains on third and here's Maddole, flies to center and fouled out to third, hitting three oh three.
- 1:09:24Two men away, one run in and the fifth inning.
- 1:09:28Four to nothing, New York, in field back, of course, at normal depth, the pitch to Mickey, it's in there for a strike, nothing in one.
- 1:09:50One strike pitch, swung on as fly ball right in the right center, Bill Tuttle getting under it and the sides retired.
- 1:09:59One run, two hits, no errors and one left on.
- 1:10:04And at the end of four and a half innings of play, the Yankees four, Kansas City, nothing.
- 1:10:15You know, you've been hearing a lot about the crisp pressure. Oh, Siebrin, I got to thinking of these thoughts sort of tell you just what the crisp pressure is like.
- 1:10:26For example, it won't be long before a fall, although officially be here.
- 1:10:31And you know how pleasant it is to take a hike through the woods, how crisp the air feels.
- 1:10:36This is the kind of satisfaction you get with Valentine beer, the crisp pressure.
- 1:10:41This is the kind of satisfaction that is made Valentine, the largest selling beer in the East.
- 1:10:48All you have to do is just look at a cool, palm-top, glass bowl, lively, golden and crisply clear, and then taste it.
- 1:10:55Smooth and delicious as can be.
- 1:10:59That's the crisp pressure, Valentine beer.
- 1:11:02So make the three-ring sign and ask the man for Valentine.
- 1:11:06Enjoy the crisp pressure soon.
- 1:11:21Last half of the fifth inning.
- 1:11:28Hal Smith, Frank House and Joe Demastre first three men up.
- 1:11:45Newt Mars, the wind up around, comes the right arm, in comes the pitch, and it's in their first strike.
- 1:12:07Nothing in one.
- 1:12:13White Sox lead the Senators 7-1 as they go to the ninth inning, first game.
- 1:12:24Mars pitches, swing-outs are high, pop foul over near the stands.
- 1:12:29Scarron getting under the ball makes the catch and there's one away.
- 1:12:35Smith fouls out to Scarron.
- 1:12:42Frank House, line to Shorten, the third inning, batting 273, or 271 at present time 273 in the game began.
- 1:12:59The pitch is swung on a foul back out of play.
- 1:13:15No balls, one strike.
- 1:13:28Mars flips, curve, swung on, and missed, strike two, let up, curve, nothing in two.
- 1:13:46Two strike offing, swung on a ground ball hit to Scarron and he outruns House to the back.
- 1:13:53Mars actually delayed starting over, and Moose had to go take it himself, two down.
- 1:13:59And now Joe Demastry, single left field in the 13th.
- 1:14:06The only hit, by the way, off Mars plus five.
- 1:14:11Bud Daly limbering up the bullpen. Demastry gets on, aircraft might make a move.
- 1:14:27Mars's pitch, swung on, fouled off, strike one.
- 1:14:36Chicago beat Washington 7-1, Billy Pierce defeating Bill Fisher.
- 1:14:42The only runoff, Pierce receivers 37, 38, color.
- 1:14:54The delivery is outside ball one, which means that the Yankees cannot clinch the pennant
- 1:15:05unless they win this game.
- 1:15:07They'd rather clinch it winning a game rather than having it clinched while the White Sox were losing.
- 1:15:19The one-one delivery, swung on, say, pop up out into short center, mantel coming in fast,
- 1:15:25and can't get it, ball drops, make jizzles, and two back and madder all out there, and it's scored as a base hit.
- 1:15:42Now let's see whether Terry's gonna bat or not with Bud Daly limbering up.
- 1:15:50Ralph hadn't pitched bad ball at all, but he's out of the game gonna have a pinch hitter.
- 1:16:02Like Bob Martin, batting for the Kansas City of the Crescent, and Larry here, and there's 32 Bob Martin.
- 1:16:23So there's the viewers who were interested in the American baseball and baseball,
- 1:16:27and they had one hit in the first game today.
- 1:16:32Steve Reynolds and Jonathan had one hit in the first game today.
- 1:16:38Bob Martin coming up to it for Ralph Terry.
- 1:16:48With the American League batting race so close, Williams was leading this morning with 3-20.
- 1:16:52Reynolds second 3-18, chain and serve tied for the next spot with 3-16, and Big Power was next with 3-15.
- 1:17:05Still part of the day, serves nothing for one, Power in the first game had one for four,
- 1:17:09Reynolds had one for four, Williams was nothing for four.
- 1:17:15Bob Martin batting for Terry, forgot something, I don't know what, it's a wrong bat I guess.
- 1:17:30Bill Summers walks over to see what's going on.
- 1:17:36We can't see inside the dugout, I don't know what Bob's doing.
- 1:17:48Summers goes over to see what's going on.
- 1:17:54They got something in his eye.
- 1:18:02Now Herzog's going to hit for Martin.
- 1:18:09Martin got something in his eye.
- 1:18:12That's a strange one.
- 1:18:15Bob Martin was up there in the back, got something in his eye.
- 1:18:20Now why did Herzog hit for Martin?
- 1:18:22He both left handers.
- 1:18:29I don't think I ever heard of anybody, Bill's over here on the TV side.
- 1:18:34You ever heard of anybody batting for somebody because you got something in your eye?
- 1:18:43Another oddity.
- 1:18:51Here's a pitch now to Herzog and it's inside for a ball.
- 1:19:08Summers checks the runner and the pitch.
- 1:19:11It's in there, fast ball, strike one, twenty-one.
- 1:19:17Right here's Herzog hitting for Bob Martin who is hitting for Ralph Terry.
- 1:19:25Herzog hitting two-thirty-two.
- 1:19:32The one-one pitch curve is swung on.
- 1:19:34A ground ball hit out by second of McDougalooce and throws the first and gets him just in time.
- 1:19:42Almost booted the ball too long. No runs, one hit, no errors and one left on.
- 1:19:49And at the end of five innings of play, New York, four runs, four hits, no errors and two left on.
- 1:19:56The Yankee Upton, a rather big can de cittiers, no run, two hits, one error and three men left on.
- 1:20:06The only thing left is after that, the employee to the pitcher of the meantime,
- 1:20:15but Bailey's been warming up on the Valentine's School Board in the American League,
- 1:20:23the White Sox beat Washington, seven to one, Billy Pierce beat Bill Fisher.
- 1:20:29The Seabrook guy is thirty-eight Homer.
- 1:20:32The first game with all the double headers in the American League.
- 1:20:36Cleveland beat Baltimore seven to four for SEB Johnson with big power homering of two on
- 1:20:40and Rocky Colabito hitting two homers, is thirty-six and thirty-seven.
- 1:20:44Second game, Baltimore leads, Cleveland three to nothing, ten of an inning and a half,
- 1:20:48for the Clarell against Grant Woodishick in the second.
- 1:20:51For the Clarell, Homer in the second inning.
- 1:20:54Detroit beat Boston six to one, Fort Jack beats Sullivan.
- 1:21:00Now let's see, wait a minute, Fort Jack couldn't have won this game.
- 1:21:04If the ticker is right and Fornilas came on in the third inning,
- 1:21:08then Fornilas would have to be the winning pitcher.
- 1:21:10Did you say Fort Jack on the ticker, Joe?
- 1:21:14Well if Fornilas came on in the third, he'd have to be the winning pitcher because the starter has to go five.
- 1:21:19Sullivan the loser, Clarell, Sullivan in the ninth.
- 1:21:22In the National League, Milwaukee and Los Angeles end of seven innings.
- 1:21:27It is five to three Los Angeles, Tupstein for Dryasdale in the sixth,
- 1:21:31Pizarro for Bewell in the sixth, Demeter, Homer to the one on and Adcock to the one off.
- 1:21:35Playing one game. St. Louis, Pete, Philadelphia in there.
- 1:21:38A single, a bare singer, just to say, just one game scheduled.
- 1:21:44Jones, Pete, Sandberg, Homerons, Norrin, two for Cunningham, one with two on.
- 1:21:49And a double header of Pittsburgh beat Chicago first game five to four,
- 1:21:52Portofi in the relief of Braden the winner, Hillman relief of Anderson, the loser, Tanner, Homer with two on.
- 1:21:57Pittsburgh four, Chicago one, end of two innings for second game, Brandon Phillips, Masarovsky, Homer to the second.
- 1:22:03Cincinnati beat San Francisco four to three, Perky beat Miller, Robinson, Homer to the fourth,
- 1:22:08Monsant and Newcomb, the pitchers in the second game.
- 1:22:12Mudd Daly coming into pitch for Kansas City as we go to the sixth inning.
- 1:22:22Ralph Terry in five innings, about four hits and four runs.
- 1:22:32He walked two men and struck out one.
- 1:22:43You know Slaughter swings the first pitch and hits it to short up with it on one half as the maestry is throw to first and tie.
- 1:22:52Slaughter who had single run home in the first thing and grounded the second was after the first pitch.
- 1:22:58Hit it hard but right at the maestry.
- 1:23:03One away, Anas was hitting 322.
- 1:23:08Now Elston Howard, grounded to short twice, batting 327.
- 1:23:17Four to nothing, New York sixth inning.
- 1:23:22Left hander, but Daly to wind up the pitch inside ball one.
- 1:23:39Next delivery is high ball two.
- 1:23:44Daly has a record of two and two, it's just 24th currents.
- 1:23:51Came up with Cleveland went to Baltimore, straight from Baltimore, Kansas City for quarter-colonel.
- 1:23:57Here's the pitch in there for strike, 21.
- 1:24:03He's sending there with a buffalo and he was recalled some time ago.
- 1:24:13The left hander is 2-1 pitched to Elston Howard, it's over, strike 2-2-2.
- 1:24:27Boy that wind is really whipping. Somebody gonna get hurt with the ball hit up in the air pretty soon.
- 1:24:32And the right one over that fence. Daly hit one over, pitched to Howard, swung on, ground ball hit up through the middle and the center for a base hit.
- 1:24:43Bill Tuttle tossing back in.
- 1:24:47And here's the moose who applied to center and struck out, hitting 279.
- 1:25:05But Daly delivers the scouring. Over the inside corner for a strike, they whipped a fast ball in tight, had moose lean in.
- 1:25:18Daly sets pitches, change up his inside, now the second goes Howard and he steals second, the ball bounced out of house, his mid.
- 1:25:27I believe a hit and run was on. Now they've called it a wild pitch.
- 1:25:36Howard was running before the ball was ever thrown to the plate, so he had to give him stolen base even though the ball got away from the catcher.
- 1:25:44Now we have to go with the official ruling a wild pitch. Here's the delivery to the moose, swung on and missed strike 2, a wild swing.
- 1:25:56One ball, two strikes.
- 1:26:07Daly ready. Here's the pitch, swung on, hit foul, back the first out of play.
- 1:26:16One, two count.
- 1:26:37But Daly the stretch, Howard to lead off second, pitch to scouring, swung on, the ground ball hit out to second. Up with it as low pass throws on the ward, Howard advances to third.
- 1:26:47Two away.
- 1:26:50And Tony Kubek coming up, grounded to second and popped to third.
- 1:27:05Tony batting 270.
- 1:27:12Hal Smith shortened up to third. Two away, pitch to Kubek, swung on and missed strike one.
- 1:27:19He tried to punch that one by a third, took sort of a half swing.
- 1:27:34The left hander delivers and Kubek takes out the side for a ball on him one.
- 1:27:56The one-one pitch, swung on, little roller, hit down the ward, he's up with it, steps on, first the side's retired.
- 1:28:04No runs, one hit, no errors, one left on, 10 to 5 and a half innings.
- 1:28:08Now to York 4, Kansas City nothing. Here's a song about Valentine beer, the crisp professor.
- 1:28:18To be crisp, you'll be crisp, a beer must be ice cream ice, ice must be ice cream and delicious, food and delicious.
- 1:28:39Like a golden crystal clear
- 1:28:44The crystal clear pressure
- 1:28:47The crystal clear pressure
- 1:28:50Down the bottom, down the bottom, down the bottom
- 1:28:53Here
- 1:28:54Oh, oh, oh
- 1:28:55Hey, yes you come here
- 1:28:58Hey, yes you balance the time
- 1:29:00Hey, yes you come here
- 1:29:02Come to me and yes you like
- 1:29:03All balance right here
- 1:29:06Oh, oh, oh
- 1:29:16Last half of the sixth inning
- 1:29:18Oh, oh, oh
- 1:29:29It's the top of the order for Kansas City
- 1:29:31Tuttle, Maris and Lopez
- 1:29:40Tuttle grounded to third and short
- 1:29:42Getting 238
- 1:29:52Newt Mars to the wind up around
- 1:29:54Comes the right arm, the pitch
- 1:29:56A little outside ball one
- 1:30:10Mars to the wind up again
- 1:30:12And the pitch
- 1:30:13Swung on it, missed the slack one
- 1:30:15One ball, one strike
- 1:30:33Newt Mars next pitch, Tuttle swings
- 1:30:35Hit the ground, ball out to short
- 1:30:37Cougbeck has left up with it
- 1:30:38Throws on to Skyron in time
- 1:30:40Far away
- 1:30:42Now Roger Maris
- 1:31:07Roger Maris takes the curve ball
- 1:31:09Inside corners, strike one
- 1:31:21Maris flying to right, sunning
- 1:31:22Grounded to second
- 1:31:23Just narrowly missed a homer
- 1:31:25In the first inning
- 1:31:26And over the fence
- 1:31:27For a little bit foul
- 1:31:30Newt Mars to the wind up
- 1:31:32Brown comes the arm, the pitch
- 1:31:34Outside, 21
- 1:31:38Now field for the right
- 1:31:52The one and one pitch
- 1:31:53For the left hand hitter
- 1:31:54Swung on it, missed the slack two
- 1:31:56One and two
- 1:32:02One ball, two strikes
- 1:32:06Bobby Richardson short enough
- 1:32:08Third wide of the bag
- 1:32:09Cougbeck deep over near second
- 1:32:10McGoogle on the grass
- 1:32:12Well into the first base hole
- 1:32:13Skyron deep at the line
- 1:32:19One, two pitch on its way
- 1:32:20To the left hand batter
- 1:32:21And it is low outside, Tutu
- 1:32:24Two balls, two strikes
- 1:32:46Duke into the wind up
- 1:32:47And the pitch, curve hits him
- 1:32:51As in the dirt and hit Maris on the foot
- 1:32:54Hit by a pitch strong
- 1:33:02Roke off a curve into the dirt
- 1:33:04And pass the aim on the foot
- 1:33:05And here is Hector Lopez
- 1:33:06Grounded to third twice
- 1:33:09Batting to 16, Bob served to follow
- 1:33:11Duke tried to throw a lot of curve
- 1:33:28Pulled a string on it too much
- 1:33:39That feels straight away in field
- 1:33:41And toward third the pitch is
- 1:33:42Swung on it, missed the strike one
- 1:33:44Went for an inside, fast ball
- 1:33:55No balls, one strike
- 1:34:06Here is the pitch
- 1:34:07Swung on, foul off beneath the strike two
- 1:34:09Nothing in two
- 1:34:19No balls, two strikes, one out
- 1:34:20Maas again to the stretch
- 1:34:40Maris with a lead
- 1:34:41Got good speed
- 1:34:42And the pitch
- 1:34:43Swung on, a ground ball hit out
- 1:34:44To Quebec, over to McDougall
- 1:34:46McDougall back to first double play
- 1:34:47And the sides retired
- 1:34:52No runs, no hits, no errors
- 1:34:53And no one left on
- 1:34:54Father Yankees 167th double play
- 1:34:58And at the end of six innings
- 1:34:59New York four runs, five hits, no errors
- 1:35:00Three left on, Kansas City no runs
- 1:35:01Two hits, one error, three left on
- 1:35:02And we pause for a station identification

- 1:36:13Throw from Hal Smith to Ward in time
- 1:36:16Bobby Richardson who had grounded the third
- 1:36:18And single a left goes after the first pitch
- 1:36:20In the seventh inning

- 1:37:28Turned ball over, strike two, one and two
- 1:37:40One ball, two strikes
- 1:37:44And the pitch
- 1:37:46Swung on it, foul back
- 1:37:54A one-two count on Mars
- 1:38:04Bud Daley to his wind-up
- 1:38:06Here's the pitch
- 1:38:08All strike three, curfew
- 1:38:12Two men away
- 1:38:13Baby's got a real good slow curve
- 1:38:18Now Norm Sebron
- 1:38:19Granted the first block in triple to right center
- 1:38:23Hitting 305
- 1:38:29Two men out in the seventh inning
- 1:38:31Four to nothing New York
- 1:38:39Bud Daley to the wind-up delivers
- 1:38:41Sebron takes inside, ball one
- 1:38:53The one-nothing pitch
- 1:38:55Fair ball over, strike one, one-one
- 1:39:03Bud had an accident to his right arm
- 1:39:06And it's considerably shriveled
- 1:39:08But his left arm works magic with that baseball
- 1:39:12The delivery in there, strike two, one and two
- 1:39:16Fastball got the outside corner
- 1:39:24One ball, two strikes
- 1:39:27And the pitch
- 1:39:28Swung on to high fly ball into short center
- 1:39:32Lopez is out under it and makes the catch
- 1:39:36Sides retired, no runs, no hits, no errors, no one left on
- 1:39:40And at the end of six and a half inings of play
- 1:39:43New York, four Kansas City, nothing
- 1:39:48Ball game, take me out to the park, buy me some Valentine
- 1:39:54And I'll stay around until it gets dark
- 1:39:58Root, root for Valentine
- 1:40:01The largest selling beer in the east
- 1:40:04You can have a fine time with Valentine
- 1:40:07In fact, you can enjoy it at a feast
- 1:40:11Now the latter side of baseball
- 1:40:13They tell about a well-known manager
- 1:40:15Matt Cleveland had a cold one day
- 1:40:18He kept his handkerchief pretty busy
- 1:40:20And right from the start, every Indian who got the first base
- 1:40:23Tried to steal second
- 1:40:24After a while, the manager was puzzle ball
- 1:40:26That and to what his coaches said
- 1:40:28Remember, his Keppler, your steel sign is with a handkerchief
- 1:40:31Up to the nose
- 1:40:33The manager hadn't realized with that cold
- 1:40:35He kept giving him the steel sign
- 1:40:38On the latter side of something else
- 1:40:40Let's talk about Valentine beer, the Chris Professor
- 1:40:43A lifted glass of Valentine to your lips
- 1:40:45So icily lights are smooth and delicious
- 1:40:49And on top of that, Valentine is now
- 1:40:51The largest selling beer in the east
- 1:40:53So enjoy a tall, foam-top glass bowl
- 1:40:56Just make the three-ring sign
- 1:40:58And ask the man for Valentine
- 1:41:00Valentine beer, the crisp refresher
- 1:41:05It's the last half of the seventh inning
- 1:41:11Bob Servup
- 1:41:16Getting 3-15, flying to left center and walked
- 1:41:204-0 New York
- 1:41:22Duke Mars starts to wind up
- 1:41:24Around comes the right arm, the pitch
- 1:41:26Swung on to high fly ball to left field
- 1:41:30Sebron under the ball and makes the catch
- 1:41:33And he dropped it!
- 1:41:35And there goes Serv in the second
- 1:41:38He had it and then dropped it
- 1:41:41And it's a two-base error for Norm Sebron
- 1:41:51The runner on second with nobody out
- 1:41:55The Yankees are trying to get humance to say
- 1:41:57And he had it and was taken it out of the club
- 1:42:04He just dropped the ball
- 1:42:06And he's going to wait for a moment
- 1:42:08Franchive a second, but never a possession
- 1:42:15So Bob serves on second base
- 1:42:17The equivalent of a double
- 1:42:18But it's a two-base error charged to Norm Sebron
- 1:42:23And here's Preston Ward
- 1:42:25And now he's having a start
- 1:42:28Ward flying to right center
- 1:42:30And straight away center, hitting 294
- 1:42:35Duke Mars to the stretch
- 1:42:37Pitch to the left hand batter
- 1:42:38Swung on, hit the foul, and out of play
- 1:42:40Back a third strike one
- 1:42:47That was a funny kind of thing
- 1:42:48It was a high ball
- 1:42:50He must have had tremendous overspin
- 1:42:52And got in the glove and just spun out of it
- 1:42:59Norm is standing under
- 1:43:01He didn't have to move anywhere
- 1:43:10Something like that of course
- 1:43:11Can change everything around
- 1:43:14Put more pressure on the pitcher
- 1:43:20Serve on second, nobody out
- 1:43:27Kubeck tried to sneak in behind serve
- 1:43:34Now we're ready
- 1:43:35Pitch to Ward, low inside
- 1:43:38Ball on, one and one
- 1:43:54Howard talking to Mars now
- 1:43:57Trouched back behind the plate
- 1:44:19Preston Ward the batter
- 1:44:20Smith and House to follow
- 1:44:22Serve on second
- 1:44:23Nobody out
- 1:44:25Here's the pitch
- 1:44:27High fast ball accounts two and one
- 1:44:52Ready for the 2-1 pitch
- 1:44:53Swung on, a ground ball
- 1:44:55Bounced out to McDougall
- 1:44:56And he's doing his way
- 1:44:58And here's the third
- 1:44:59Coming in to score
- 1:45:00And it's 4-1
- 1:45:05McDougall makes an error on Ward
- 1:45:08Two straight errors and one run home
- 1:45:18Stephen and McDougall
- 1:45:20Two consecutive errors
- 1:45:21Here in the seventh inning
- 1:45:23That's the ball rolling in the other direction
- 1:45:31Now Jim Turner signals the Yankee bullpen
- 1:45:34Sometimes the pitcher is tuned very fine
- 1:45:37For a game, can get upset over such situation
- 1:45:40And then start to struggle
- 1:45:43Now here's Hal Smith hitting 264
- 1:45:48Mars checks the runner and the pitch
- 1:45:51Swung on and foul back
- 1:45:54Of course Duke has pitched a brilliant ball up to now
- 1:45:59Two hitters and deserve to be working at two outs
- 1:46:02And nobody on
- 1:46:04Instead one on in, one on and nobody out
- 1:46:09Ryan Duren gets up to throw over New York
- 1:46:23Got some action in the A's bullpen
- 1:46:34Mars into the stretch, check the runner
- 1:46:36And the pitch
- 1:46:37Swung on, it's a high puff foul
- 1:46:39The wind's blowing it and he drops it
- 1:46:43How about that?
- 1:46:45Bow ball, that's three outs
- 1:46:47That Yankees have failed to handle
- 1:46:53The wind kept carrying it away
- 1:46:55And I knew he had trouble
- 1:46:56And he dropped it
- 1:46:57And banking every got a glove on it
- 1:47:01So wait the official score is ruling
- 1:47:04Now Duke Mars, by his pitching has retired
- 1:47:09To first three batters but he still hasn't got anybody out
- 1:47:13Richardson could have had the ball
- 1:47:15They have not turned over the error
- 1:47:17Because the ball went and blew it away
- 1:47:19Although Richardson was staying there
- 1:47:21Could have gotten it but Howard was making the play
- 1:47:23On the ball
- 1:47:24So Smith is still alive, two strikes
- 1:47:27Isn't this fantastic at that?
- 1:47:40Mars getting a sign
- 1:47:44Here's the pitch
- 1:47:45Swung on and fouled off behind the plate
- 1:47:47Count remains nothing in two
- 1:47:49Dick Tomineck is throwing for Kansas City
- 1:47:55A rough break for Duke
- 1:48:15Mars all set and the pitch
- 1:48:17Swung on, fouled back out of play
- 1:48:19Count remains two strikes
- 1:48:37Frank House is on deck
- 1:48:54Mars again to the stretch
- 1:48:56Ward leading off first
- 1:48:57The pitch to Smithy
- 1:48:58Swung on a bouncer hit to Quebec
- 1:49:00Over to McDougal for one
- 1:49:01Back to first a double play
- 1:49:05That's five outs that Mars has gotten in this inning
- 1:49:07But he's only been credited with two
- 1:49:18The big DP, number two in the ball game
- 1:49:21168 for New York
- 1:49:23Now Frank House
- 1:49:28Aligned to short and grounded to first
- 1:49:31Four to one New York seventh inning
- 1:49:40Mars delivers
- 1:49:41Swung on to a fly ball into left center
- 1:49:44Lay it on calling for it
- 1:49:45And Mickey makes the catch
- 1:49:47The side's retired
- 1:49:49One run
- 1:49:51No hits, two errors and no one left on
- 1:49:54And at the end of seven innings
- 1:49:56The Yankees four runs, five hits
- 1:49:59And three left on
- 1:50:01Kansas City one run, two hits
- 1:50:04One error and three men left on
- 1:50:10And as the follow says that's the way it goes

- 1:51:30Ready to go here in the top of the eighth
- 1:51:32Hill McDougal leading off
- 1:51:34McDougal walk home and bounce out short to fair
- 1:51:36He's driven in two and scored twice
- 1:51:39Strike one on Gill
- 1:51:41Bud Daly the left hander on the mound
- 1:51:52One strike, Chris McDougal is low ball one one one
- 1:52:02Ricky Mantle on deck
- 1:52:05One one pitch is outside ball two two and one
- 1:52:21Pitch is popped in here from outside of first person war going over
- 1:52:27Can't make the catch the ball goes into the box seats and back of first base
- 1:52:32Point two on Gill
- 1:53:00Here's the two two pitch
- 1:53:02Low outside ball three three and two
- 1:53:13Ready for the payoff pitch to McDougal here it is
- 1:53:17Gill swings and lines it to left field way back there way back
- 1:53:21And off the wall to left center field McDougal around first heading for second
- 1:53:25He slides and he's in there with a double
- 1:53:29Gill McDougal hits a long double off the left center field
- 1:53:32Just about five or six feet from going over for another home
- 1:53:36Gill is starting to hit now
- 1:53:40Timely hits and here's Mickey Mantle batting right handed against the left hander
- 1:53:44Bud Daly Mickey has twice fly to center and popped to fair
- 1:53:48Mantle down to three oh two
- 1:53:57Here's the stretch by Daly
- 1:54:00Sheriff is over strike one call
- 1:54:15Daly steps back off the mom
- 1:54:20Now he's ready
- 1:54:23Here's the stretch
- 1:54:26Here's the low ball one one one
- 1:54:41McDougal leading off second base
- 1:54:45The one one pitch
- 1:54:47Ball two two and one
- 1:54:49Mickey's jump that pitch, picked it up McDougal started but went back to second
- 1:55:04Mickey holding that bat way down on the end
- 1:55:07He gets one up in this wind
- 1:55:10Looks on where it'll go
- 1:55:12Oh the off is left foot
- 1:55:17He's up with a ball coaching a third
- 1:55:21And thank you Matt wants to look at the ball
- 1:55:26Now good and I saw it out of play
- 1:55:29From shoot polish on it by Mickey's foot
- 1:55:36Two balls two strikes and nobody else
- 1:55:41Mickey's lead four to one
- 1:55:48Here's the stretch
- 1:55:51Pitch to Mickey way inside gets by house but still not far enough for Mantle
- 1:55:55By the McDougal with that it's full count on Mickey three and two
- 1:56:08Daly's got a pretty good nut load
- 1:56:10Enough to handle when this wind blowing
- 1:56:13The attend is a win it helps the knuckle ball pitch it
- 1:56:19Stretch and a payoff fetch
- 1:56:22Oh back against the screen
- 1:56:27Now holds it three and two
- 1:56:30What Daly checked the sign from Frank House
- 1:56:45Pitch is strike three on a change of curve ball
- 1:56:54That Mantle swinging Mickey was really reaching for that one
- 1:57:01One out here is the Enos Slaughter who was single in the first inning driving in McDougal
- 1:57:04Counts out second to first and short to first
- 1:57:07Slaughter betting for each one
- 1:57:23Here's the pitch to Slaughter high inside ball one
- 1:57:28One way here in the top of the eighth Yankees four Kansas City one
- 1:57:46The catch is popped in the air in foul territory
- 1:57:49Going back under it makes the catch in foul territory for out number two
- 1:57:53Smitty thought that was three out started to run in but he saw
- 1:57:56But Daly and Joe Demis be covering third and he had a little surprise look on his face
- 1:58:00Happens once in a while to figure out how many out there are
- 1:58:04Two out that'll bring our belts in hard
- 1:58:07Hours one for three bounce out short to first twice a single of center
- 1:58:13Captain betting three twenty nine
- 1:58:20Frank House out in the mouth talking with what Daly
- 1:58:28Two away
- 1:58:42That's just as far down a third base line going out in the Yankee bullpen
- 1:59:10One strike on Ellie the Google who let off the inning with a double still down a second base
- 1:59:20The first ball is outside ball one one one
- 1:59:42The stretch the catch is not far out of play and back up first one ball two strikes
- 2:00:05One ball two strikes two out
- 2:00:23Daly checks the sign
- 2:00:29Now it gets tired of waiting steps out of the box
- 2:00:40Ellie steps back in the box for ready to go two out four to one for every Yankee
- 2:00:47That's it slowly out towards short house with cuts in front of the shortstop
- 2:00:51The first in time for the out so for the Yankees in the top of the eighth no runs on one hit
- 2:00:59Kansas City errors one man left the score at the end of seven and a half innings of play
- 2:01:04Yankees for Kansas City one Valentine Bear is a crisp refresher and we'll tell you why

- 2:02:21me single left and single center joe batting to 18 duke mass ready on the
- 2:02:37ground power is numbering up about in the bullpen the curve is like one corner on the
- 2:02:46outside corner like that we'll go out to play defensively for the Yankees here's the one strike
- 2:03:03pitch to the nation swings a high fly to left center field nettle going over to his right
- 2:03:08under it and then the wind blows the ball back and Mickey has to backpedal at the last second
- 2:03:14to catch it it gives the fans a little thrill there on our one and harry simpson is coming

- 2:05:04pops out the wind up and the curve is low outside ball to tune up now let's pause for
- 2:05:23a station identification if I was set at 1460 wokl first in old bennie new york and remember

- 2:07:44three in the first game and it's nothing nothing at the end of two and a half of the second
- 2:07:47game coming up to enter is coming on for Kansas City he will be there third pitch with the
- 2:08:06afternoon Ralph Terry started and now mill Allen will take over and now we're getting
- 2:08:16to move into the main funding bill scowren Tony Kubek and Bobby Richardson are the first
- 2:08:31three men to come to bat and for those who are watching on television if we talk a little
- 2:08:40more than usual during the play we are doing a simulcast here just in the ninth inning
- 2:08:49in order to give the bill time to get down to the Yankee clubhouse in case we may or may
- 2:08:55not have something after this game big common a pitching to build scowren strike one these
- 2:09:04have Maris and Lopez and serve all coming up in the night so the game's not over by any
- 2:09:10means scowren lift a high foul out of play to the right of the plate strike two bill
- 2:09:17five the center struck out and grounded the second hitting two seventy eight no balls
- 2:09:35two strikes big common a third ace pitcher scowren swings and grounds one out the second
- 2:09:41and it's through for a set off the club and Lopez he went over to his left man to get
- 2:09:47a bit of a glove on it but couldn't hold it and it's a base it for builds carot now coming
- 2:09:59up to school back to ground at the second top the third and grounded the first now smith
- 2:10:13shortens up the third there's a strike a fastball in there nothing in one ninth inning New York
- 2:10:25for Kansas City one back swing to lift the high foul on the left the alliance Smith and
- 2:10:41to make me chasing it in smithy makes the catch going away who back fouls out to how
- 2:10:49Smith has been playing a fine third base for a fellow who's caught most of the time now
- 2:10:56Bobby Richardson grounded third single about them grounded the third hitting two nineteen
- 2:11:22one dancing off first Richardson swings and lines it down the right field line strike
- 2:11:29one nothing in one on Bobby do up next field is straight away now smith still short of
- 2:11:46the third Richardson takes inside for a ball 21 but daily turned in a nice three innings
- 2:11:58six seven to eight allowed two hits no runs Ralph Terry worked first five allowed four
- 2:12:07hits and four runs Richardson swings a little foul ball out of play back first one ball two
- 2:12:15strikes Washington and Chicago are tied to two at the end of two innings of the second
- 2:12:24game Washington rather Chicago beat Washington in the first game Bobby Richardson takes a
- 2:12:33high pitch for a two to count two balls two strikes Richardson hits a ground ball by a
- 2:12:59third short and there's no play anywhere as the mainstream backs up the base hit but
- 2:13:05it kept the ball going through the left and kept scouring for moving to third smash off
- 2:13:11Smith's glove as the mainstream backing up neatly and now Duke Mars is the batter flying
- 2:13:18to right sacrifice to the third strike do takes a look now see what case wants him to
- 2:13:31do bank for setting the sign along Smith and Ward are shortened up with one out you have
- 2:13:40to wonder it was nobody out you'd pretty well know what he was going to do the delivery
- 2:13:45is by foul and by the plate strike one Mars has had five four forty five takes another
- 2:13:57look at Corsetti know Impala actions the reason for the bar
- 2:13:58to small bar doubly is one of theبل and no one started out on for first more swings
- 2:14:14My swing hit the smith who throws on to second for one back to first that's due eight.
- 2:14:21Going to third is Bill Scarran as Richardson helped nudge Lopez out to play a little.
- 2:14:31Tell you one thing that was a good play by Smitty because Duke hits the ball real hard.
- 2:14:38He throws out at second, Richardson. The damaging aspect from the fact that the ball didn't go through,
- 2:14:50from the Yankee standpoint is that Mars had to run pretty hard.
- 2:14:55I say that because pitching coaches, if you're ahead, they from the game they tell a pitcher,
- 2:15:02don't run through, it takes some strength out of you.
- 2:15:07Scarran comes up to hit the norm, Siebron.
- 2:15:10Scarran, Hank Mauer.
- 2:15:15Mauer hitting four, Siebron. They pitch to Hank as high, a ball one.
- 2:15:22Mauer bang 271.
- 2:15:30Go third and Mars on first. Moose and Mars aboard. No pitch. Time has asked for and called by Bill Summers.
- 2:15:46One ball, no strikes.
- 2:15:50Mauer out in the length of 41 New York. Hank Mauer swings and fouls it back out of play. Strike one, 21.
- 2:16:10Dick Dominick on the mound. And now Mauer swings and loops one out over second and it is in there for a big fit.
- 2:16:24Mars rounds second on his way to third as Scarran scores.
- 2:16:28Hank Mauer comes through with a pinched signal to center and it's five to one New York.
- 2:16:34Now Jim Turner signals his bullpen because Mars has had to run pretty hard in the thing.
- 2:16:42Getting a little winded.
- 2:16:45Hank Mauer drives in a run with a single to center.
- 2:16:49It's 47. Run back again.
- 2:16:53And now just about what I was telling you when Mars had to race to third, Jim Turner means he's got it.
- 2:16:59He's signaled his bullpen and Ryan Duren is up. Right now, Bill McDougal is at plate.
- 2:17:07Walk, homers, doubles, down at the shore.
- 2:17:11McDougal takes the fast ball first strike. Getting 251.
- 2:17:28Bill McDougal. There's a pitch out, nobody's running. One in one.
- 2:17:41One ball, one strike, two outs. Five to one New York, nine-thinning.
- 2:17:51McDougal swings the lifters. They've got a good cut of the good fast ball. One and two.
- 2:17:59Ryan Duren loosening up.
- 2:18:07Mars on third, power on first.
- 2:18:12One ball, two strikes on McDougal.
- 2:18:16And Gill takes inside, two to. Jominick crowded him.
- 2:18:27Two balls, two strikes, two outs, two outs. Game one of two.
- 2:18:33Runners lead away. And McDougal swings and grounds it to short.
- 2:18:38The maistria put it, throws on over to Lopez to force power.
- 2:18:42And the sides retired. One run, three hits, no errors, and two left on.
- 2:18:49And the late-and-a-half, I think, is New York five, Kansas City one.
- 2:18:58You know, somebody asked you to describe a crisp for pressure in your own words.
- 2:19:01When it goes something like this, you'd say,
- 2:19:04well, a crisp for pressure is like that wonderful morning swim
- 2:19:07when I'm on a summertime vacation up at the lake.
- 2:19:10The air is so clear and clean, the water so sparkling and inviting.
- 2:19:14The whole thing's so refreshing that, well, that's the way I describe it,
- 2:19:18because for pressure.
- 2:19:19Well, now, if you said that, you've just done a great job of describing
- 2:19:22the kind of refreshment you get with Valentine beer.
- 2:19:26Because Valentine beer is the crisp for pressure.
- 2:19:29You can prove that by pouring yourself a cool foaming glass bowl.
- 2:19:33Look at it. See how golden and clear it is.
- 2:19:35And then taste it. Taste how smooth and delicious it is.
- 2:19:39And then, the swallow reminds you of the refreshment of that morning swim in the lake
- 2:19:43or maybe of a punch into the surf on a summer day.
- 2:19:46That's crisp refreshment.
- 2:19:48The special kind of refreshment that's made Valentine the largest selling beer in the East.
- 2:19:52How about enjoying a tall foaming glass of Valentine beer right now?
- 2:19:55Thank you.
- 2:19:56The last time for the late-and-a-half in Kansas City,
- 2:20:00one that could be another historic one.
- 2:20:07On the other hand, that moment could be delayed.
- 2:20:11Roger Maras is the first batter, Hector Lopez on deck and Bob served the bottle.
- 2:20:17Ryan Durham, warming up to the bullpen.
- 2:20:24Keith Mars, slow coming out.
- 2:20:27Having been on the bases.
- 2:20:29Interactionally.
- 2:20:31You know, a lot of people don't realize how much
- 2:20:33it's taken out of a pitcher, working a ball game,
- 2:20:38and now in the late innings when he has to run hard,
- 2:20:41take the little bit out of the legs.
- 2:20:43And that's what's important, the old underpinning.
- 2:20:48The underpinning is what makes a fellow stand up, so to speak.
- 2:20:54And no pun intended.
- 2:20:58He's going to get weak in the leg before that ball doesn't do tricks he wanted to do.
- 2:21:05So we'll see now as Roger Maras steps in.
- 2:21:08Hank Bauer is in right field, and Slaughter has switched over to left.
- 2:21:16Roger Maras applied to right, center, grounded,
