- 0:57Speaker 4: and the Queen Lisa is that the building as well,
- 1:02Speaker 4: And we have a We actually have a caller that
- 1:07Speaker 4: Lisa is going to introduce and I can't wait for
- 1:10Speaker 4: this one for a personal reason.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Oh of course, of course.
- 1:14Speaker 5: So I'm going to start with his resume and it's
- 1:16Speaker 5: going to take me a minute to go through all
- 1:18Speaker 5: the accomplishments that our guest is doe. Our guest has
- 1:22Speaker 5: done over the years. So we're going to start with
- 1:24Speaker 5: this caller or this guest is a native of West Virginia.
- 1:28Speaker 5: He started his career in golf at Barbersville High School
- 1:32Speaker 5: and won three consecutive West Virginia State Tournament championships while
- 1:35Speaker 5: it was there. He then proceeded to go on to
- 1:38Speaker 5: the collegiate route at Marshall. He led the Herd in
- 1:42Speaker 5: scoring averages in both nineteen eighty nine and ninety also
- 1:45Speaker 5: secured the title of team captain and was first team
- 1:49Speaker 5: All Southern Conference's senior year. After that, he moved on
- 1:52Speaker 5: to the amateur scene, where he won the West Virginia
- 1:56Speaker 5: Amateur which is happening this weekend at the Greenbrier by
- 1:58Speaker 5: the Way, thirteen times thirteen times, and he set a
- 2:05Speaker 5: new national record with ten in a row from ninety
- 2:08Speaker 5: five to two thousand and four, and that in that
- 2:12Speaker 5: time he also qualified for the US Amateur Championship nine times.
- 2:18Speaker 5: He was two thousand and one West Virginia Amateur Athlete
- 2:20Speaker 5: of the Year in West Virginia. He's also been the
- 2:23Speaker 5: West Virginia Golf Associate Player of the year nine times.
- 2:26Speaker 5: He's also been inducted into two hall of fames related
- 2:30Speaker 5: to West Virginia sports. He's in the West Virginia Golf
- 2:33Speaker 5: Hall of Fame, inducted in twenty thirteen, and then also
- 2:37Speaker 5: the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in two thousand and five.
- 2:39Speaker 5: So with all that, I have to catch my breath.
- 2:42Speaker 5: Let me let me take a minute to casual breath.
- 2:45Speaker 5: I know, right, with all those impressive stats and he's
- 2:48Speaker 5: continuing to pursue greatness, I'd like to introduce Pat Carter.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Welcome, Pat, Well.
- 2:53Speaker 6: Thank you so much. I'm humbled for that, hey man.
- 2:58Speaker 4: But here's the crazy thing about so, like when you
- 3:01Speaker 4: hear all of that, like what is that like? You know,
- 3:04Speaker 4: like I know that I know that there's the humble
- 3:06Speaker 4: piece of that. But like when you hear all of that,
- 3:09Speaker 4: you have to really understand like how great and how
- 3:12Speaker 4: special that really is.
- 3:15Speaker 6: Yeah, the one thing it reminds me of it reminds
- 3:17Speaker 6: me that I'm fifty seven years old.
- 3:20Speaker 5: We're the same age, so I feel your pain.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Well I'm a quite a bit older.
- 3:24Speaker 6: So yeah, it took a few years for you know,
- 3:29Speaker 6: for all those accomplishments for sure.
- 3:31Speaker 7: Yeah, what if you had to pick one right now,
- 3:35Speaker 7: like what was your favorite win?
- 3:40Speaker 3: And or and and or why.
- 3:43Speaker 6: Is it that?
- 3:45Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 3:45Speaker 6: The you know, Carl, the I think yes, yes, yeah,
- 3:50Speaker 6: the you know, as a matter of fact, it really
- 3:52Speaker 6: wasn't even a win. The I was playing in a
- 3:56Speaker 6: US Amateur in nineteen ninety six and and I found
- 4:00Speaker 6: out when I got to there and it was in
- 4:02Speaker 6: Pumpkin It was at Pumpkin Ridge in Portland, Oregon, and
- 4:06Speaker 6: I ended up being paired with Tiger Woods. Oh you know,
- 4:09Speaker 6: so that's that's probably my most memorable, uh experience was
- 4:16Speaker 6: I was able to play with him in the thirty
- 4:17Speaker 6: six hold qualifying at the Purrement. Two days of golf
- 4:21Speaker 6: with Tiger, and I actually was able to play his
- 4:24Speaker 6: last with him and his last stroke play amateur golf round.
- 4:29Speaker 6: And I have a science scorecard, you know, with all that,
- 4:32Speaker 6: and that's that's pretty it was a pretty memorable time.
- 4:35Speaker 6: And and uh, it was just one experience I'll never forget.
- 4:40Speaker 3: That's special.
- 4:42Speaker 7: Yeah, Hey, Pat, this is Hollis now. Coming out of
- 4:46Speaker 7: high school. You go to Marshall, and I believe that
- 4:50Speaker 7: when you went to Marshall they were just starting the
- 4:53Speaker 7: golf program and you were one of the first recruits.
- 4:56Speaker 7: So how was that process going, you know, from high
- 4:59Speaker 7: school going to an upstart collegiate golf program and having
- 5:03Speaker 7: a success that you did.
- 5:05Speaker 6: Well the actually Marshall was established, West Virginia would have
- 5:09Speaker 6: been the team that had just re established their team.
- 5:13Speaker 6: So Marshall. Marshall had recruited me heavily. I really didn't,
- 5:16Speaker 6: you know INTENDA. I grew up ten minutes from the university,
- 5:19Speaker 6: and uh, you know, I was I was always wanted
- 5:22Speaker 6: to go there. All my he rose in golf, you know,
- 5:25Speaker 6: had played there, you know Harold Payne, who was amazing,
- 5:28Speaker 6: uh you know, amateur you know, uh all American at Marshall,
- 5:32Speaker 6: and uh I just just wanted to always play there
- 5:35Speaker 6: and follow in some people's footsteps and represent uh you know,
- 5:39Speaker 6: be a herd, be a member of the herd, and
- 5:42Speaker 6: uh it just was it was a dream come true
- 5:44Speaker 6: when I signed my letter of intent and was able
- 5:46Speaker 6: to play four years for the herd.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Nice was there?
- 5:50Speaker 4: What What was the first thing that kind of caught
- 5:52Speaker 4: your attention because you said that you wanted, you know,
- 5:55Speaker 4: golf was your thing.
- 5:56Speaker 7: What started that? Like what when did you see? You know,
- 6:00Speaker 7: what did you see what made you like, Okay, I
- 6:03Speaker 7: want to be grading golf. What where'd that start at?
- 6:07Speaker 6: You know, that's a great question because I played all sports.
- 6:11Speaker 6: You know, I fell in love with baseball first and
- 6:14Speaker 6: then then I played you know, high school basketball and
- 6:17Speaker 6: loved it. And I kind of realized that size and
- 6:22Speaker 6: speed matters in most sports as uh as we all know,
- 6:26Speaker 6: I didn't have. I didn't have great size, I didn't
- 6:28Speaker 6: have great speed. I was pretty pretty good. Uh, I
- 6:30Speaker 6: had an amazing hand eye coordination and uh and before long,
- 6:35Speaker 6: golf kind of provided an avenue for me to get
- 6:38Speaker 6: a college scholarship. You know, my parents weren't wealthy, and
- 6:42Speaker 6: you know, I was able to to secure an athletic
- 6:45Speaker 6: scholarship at Marshall and was very happy and and uh,
- 6:49Speaker 6: I'm endeared to the you know, to the university, you
- 6:51Speaker 6: know obviously until now you yeah, well.
- 6:55Speaker 5: You know, Pat, looking at at all of this, this
- 6:57Speaker 5: resume that you have, and all of these awards and
- 7:01Speaker 5: accomplishments you have in golf and qualifying for the US
- 7:03Speaker 5: Amateur Championship nine times, which is amazing, and setting records,
- 7:08Speaker 5: were there any points in your career that you could
- 7:11Speaker 5: you could step on to the PGA, you know, go
- 7:14Speaker 5: to the next level in golf.
- 7:18Speaker 6: Well, you know, golf golf an eerie sport if you
- 7:22Speaker 6: if so to speak, and I say that because you
- 7:26Speaker 6: play against guys that that it, it becomes eye opening
- 7:30Speaker 6: how good they are and the road you'd have to
- 7:32Speaker 6: travel to to be competitive. And uh, you know, and
- 7:36Speaker 6: then you know, when when I established my insurance career,
- 7:39Speaker 6: you know, I was pretty happy. I was. I was
- 7:41Speaker 6: afford the ability to play all over the country, all
- 7:44Speaker 6: over the world actually, and uh, you know, I just
- 7:47Speaker 6: really had no desire to turn professionally, knowing the grind
- 7:52Speaker 6: that it would take and the probability of failure was
- 7:56Speaker 6: much greater than the than the than the idea of success.
- 8:00Speaker 6: And so so I worked on my insurance career. Uh,
- 8:03Speaker 6: got married, had a couple of kids.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Uh, and uh, life happened.
- 8:08Speaker 6: As they say, as they say, the rest is history.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Yes, you know, it's interesting.
- 8:14Speaker 4: It's interesting because you know, I just I just well,
- 8:17Speaker 4: I shouldn't say I just started playing golf, but I've
- 8:20Speaker 4: been playing golf for a while.
- 8:22Speaker 3: And and the challenging thing to me with.
- 8:25Speaker 4: Golf is before I can even compete against, say Hollis,
- 8:29Speaker 4: I got to compete against yourself. The mindset of a
- 8:34Speaker 4: golfer is to me, is different than any sport that
- 8:38Speaker 4: I participated in. And I played football, I play basketball,
- 8:41Speaker 4: ran track. But for whatever the reason, if you can,
- 8:46Speaker 4: if you can kind of explain it, like what is
- 8:48Speaker 4: this thing that wraps people up in golf, because it's
- 8:51Speaker 4: almost impossible to be good just to people say they're good,
- 8:56Speaker 4: but that's not They're not really good compared to say
- 8:59Speaker 4: somebody like you. What is it that that that that
- 9:05Speaker 4: is in that golf that.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Draws people in but we just can't get there, you know.
- 9:11Speaker 6: Yeah, that's a that's a great question. And the ironic
- 9:15Speaker 6: thing about this is I was talking to one of
- 9:16Speaker 6: the baseball coaches from Marshall last night, uh and we
- 9:20Speaker 6: were we were discussing that exact same topic about how
- 9:23Speaker 6: you know, you got to forget about the last pitch,
- 9:25Speaker 6: the last air, you know, whatever it is. The and
- 9:28Speaker 6: golf is the same way the you know, And and
- 9:31Speaker 6: the funny thing about golf is a three hundred shot,
- 9:34Speaker 6: uh drive, a three hundred yard drive has the same
- 9:38Speaker 6: value as as a one inch pot. Yeah, and now
- 9:46Speaker 6: the three hundred yard drives are way more fun to watch.
- 9:51Speaker 6: But that's the reason you see these guys on tour
- 9:54Speaker 6: shoot so low because they don't care that they know
- 9:57Speaker 6: that each shot is the same and the and that
- 10:00Speaker 6: once you hit that shot, you move on to the
- 10:02Speaker 6: next one and uh, and that's that's how they go
- 10:05Speaker 6: so low.
- 10:06Speaker 7: And to build on that question, you won the West
- 10:09Speaker 7: Virginia Amateur I believe ten times in a row, thirteen
- 10:13Speaker 7: times total. So going into you know that tournament, and
- 10:18Speaker 7: particularly when you had your streak, what is the mindset?
- 10:22Speaker 7: Like you you know, it's hard enough to win one
- 10:24Speaker 7: championship and then you win, you know, then they start
- 10:26Speaker 7: to stack up. So like if you're going to that second,
- 10:29Speaker 7: at third, at six one, what is the mindset going
- 10:32Speaker 7: into that when you kind of have the when the
- 10:36Speaker 7: bulls out on your back, so to speak.
- 10:38Speaker 6: Well, yeah, that's a that's a that's a great question.
- 10:41Speaker 6: You know that I felt like, you know, I won
- 10:43Speaker 6: my first WESTERNI I am in nineteen eighty nine and
- 10:47Speaker 6: I kind of fell into it. Yeah, I wasn't in
- 10:49Speaker 6: the last group and it just said then they announced, Hey,
- 10:52Speaker 6: the winner's Pat Carter, and you know one by one
- 10:54Speaker 6: shot was lucky and it took me a long time.
- 10:56Speaker 6: And I always always felt that the second Amateur that
- 10:59Speaker 6: i'll one, which was in nineteen ninety five, was the
- 11:03Speaker 6: hardest one that I had ever won. Just overcoming you know,
- 11:06Speaker 6: my expectations and being able to play well, you know,
- 11:12Speaker 6: under the gun meant a lot, and that really took
- 11:15Speaker 6: my game to another level. And then once I once
- 11:18Speaker 6: I started stack and wins, I really was about the
- 11:21Speaker 6: only player in the state that played all over the
- 11:24Speaker 6: country all the time. And my experience, you know, at
- 11:28Speaker 6: being a seventy two whole tournament, I knew that a
- 11:31Speaker 6: couple holes early on in the tournament didn't really matter
- 11:35Speaker 6: who was going to win. And you know, that's the
- 11:38Speaker 6: one thing about it was that I felt like, you know,
- 11:42Speaker 6: I was the most experienced player every year, and that
- 11:46Speaker 6: was a big advantage.
- 11:48Speaker 5: So obviously, Pat, you've you've told us that you've been
- 11:52Speaker 5: able to travel and visit these different courses and play
- 11:55Speaker 5: these different courses.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Do you have a particular course.
- 11:57Speaker 5: That's one of your favorites that you like to play.
- 12:02Speaker 6: I would have to think, you know, Nicholas always said
- 12:06Speaker 6: that if he had one round of golf to play
- 12:08Speaker 6: in his life left, it would be at Pebble Beach,
- 12:10Speaker 6: and and I think that, you know, I played the
- 12:13Speaker 6: nineteen ninety nine US Amateur at Pebble Beach and under
- 12:18Speaker 6: us M conditions, USGA conditions. I mean, it was one
- 12:21Speaker 6: of the toughest courses, but one of the most fair
- 12:23Speaker 6: courses I've ever played. So if I had to choose
- 12:27Speaker 6: one over everything, and I played Augusta Pine Valley that
- 12:30Speaker 6: you know, the Old Course at Saint Andrews, the list
- 12:33Speaker 6: goes on and on, I still think I would choose
- 12:35Speaker 6: Pebble Beach to be my last round of golf.
- 12:38Speaker 5: What about in West Virginia? Do you have a favorite
- 12:41Speaker 5: course here?
- 12:42Speaker 6: Well, I have special love for all the green brick courses,
- 12:45Speaker 6: you know, obviously, Yeah, you know, I mean they have
- 12:47Speaker 6: a special place in my heart. So, you know, the
- 12:53Speaker 6: Old the Old White before it was renovated was you know,
- 12:57Speaker 6: I had tremendous success there. I loved that golf course.
- 13:00Speaker 6: I love them. I love the Old White. Now it's
- 13:03Speaker 6: I think it's extremely tough, it's very fair. But you
- 13:08Speaker 6: know it's hard for me to pen down one particular
- 13:10Speaker 6: course in the state because I love playing everywhere.
- 13:13Speaker 4: Sure, my wife is from Greenbrough County, and her and
- 13:18Speaker 4: most all of her family has worked at the Greenbrier.
- 13:21Speaker 4: So I've actually got a chance to play all of
- 13:24Speaker 4: those courses. And trust me when I tell you none
- 13:29Speaker 4: of them were good.
- 13:30Speaker 3: And and again I think.
- 13:32Speaker 7: None of them were good. And you weren't good, Yeah, yeah,
- 13:38Speaker 7: I was. I just I couldn't compete at that at
- 13:41Speaker 7: that level.
- 13:42Speaker 4: And and you know, and I think one of the
- 13:44Speaker 4: interesting components in my head was I knew that the
- 13:49Speaker 4: course was better.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Than me, you know.
- 13:51Speaker 7: And and and that's yeah, that's that's that's hurting.
- 13:55Speaker 3: I mean, that's a strange thought I've ever Yeah, that's yeah.
- 13:58Speaker 7: And and golf and and and and bet you could
- 14:01Speaker 7: agree with me or or comment on this. Golf will
- 14:06Speaker 7: tell you. It will it will align you to where
- 14:09Speaker 7: you are.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Like, it's not gonna lie, Like you can't lie to
- 14:12Speaker 4: yourself in golf, Like it's it's it's gonna tell you.
- 14:18Speaker 3: It's gonna tell you the tree it's gonna show in
- 14:21Speaker 3: every shot, Am I right?
- 14:22Speaker 7: That? That?
- 14:23Speaker 6: Well, that's that's the one thing you know, when you're
- 14:25Speaker 6: when you're defending a wide receiver out there and you're
- 14:27Speaker 6: by yourself, kind of on an island, right, Well, the golf,
- 14:32Speaker 6: you're on an island. Every single shot there's nowhere to hie.
- 14:35Speaker 6: So you know, it's it's you against you against you,
- 14:39Speaker 6: and uh, you know, and that's what you have to overcome.
- 14:42Speaker 6: And and you know, one of my one of my
- 14:44Speaker 6: coaches long ago said gave me some of the best
- 14:47Speaker 6: advice ever, and it was it was aim small and
- 14:50Speaker 6: miss small. You know, pick a target out there and
- 14:54Speaker 6: if you if you if you don't hit at it,
- 14:56Speaker 6: then that's where you're hitting. You're not looking at that
- 14:59Speaker 6: all the obstacles that are on the side. You're you're
- 15:03Speaker 6: kind of uh, you know, clearing the mechanism or what
- 15:07Speaker 6: however you want to say. But you're focusing on where
- 15:09Speaker 6: you want to hit it and not where you don't
- 15:11Speaker 6: want to hit it.
- 15:12Speaker 7: Yeah, that's that's I think that could be applicable for
- 15:14Speaker 7: a lot of different sports. I like that mindset. Uh,
- 15:18Speaker 7: and just kind of along those lines, like how do
- 15:20Speaker 7: we because on this show we often talk about sort
- 15:23Speaker 7: of ancillary sports. We just don't focus obviously on football
- 15:26Speaker 7: and basketball, and you know, we believe in, you know,
- 15:29Speaker 7: like sort of building the totality of the athlete. And
- 15:32Speaker 7: when I think about sports like golf, like even tennis,
- 15:36Speaker 7: track wrestling, those sort of individual sports, even bodybuilding to
- 15:40Speaker 7: a degree where it's sort of mind over matter, How
- 15:43Speaker 7: do we get more youth involved in in golf?
- 15:47Speaker 6: Well that yeah, that's the first t foundation has been
- 15:51Speaker 6: tremendous and getting especially inner city youth you know, playing golf.
- 15:56Speaker 6: Now you see you see smaller courses being built. What
- 15:58Speaker 6: I mean by smaller you see twelve whole courses being
- 16:01Speaker 6: built to speed up play. But you know, you know,
- 16:04Speaker 6: which I think is a wonderful idea, you know, because
- 16:08Speaker 6: because ultimately you want people out there having fun and
- 16:11Speaker 6: they you know, not maybe having goals of being on
- 16:13Speaker 6: the PGA Tour, but spending a couple of hours with
- 16:16Speaker 6: their friends having fun, sin balls go in the air
- 16:18Speaker 6: and h and then getting a few laughs and and
- 16:22Speaker 6: and jokes and whatever it may be, you know, for
- 16:25Speaker 6: a couple of hours with your buddies, and and you know,
- 16:28Speaker 6: that's to me what it's all about these days, and
- 16:30Speaker 6: that you know, I just think that that the U. S.
- 16:33Speaker 6: G A has spent a tremendous amount of money on
- 16:36Speaker 6: trying to get more people involved and and all the
- 16:39Speaker 6: Golf Associations is but you know the w g A
- 16:42Speaker 6: has followed suit and trying to take that route as well.
- 16:46Speaker 3: And you said, that's the first t foundation. Yeah, I
- 16:49Speaker 3: got it. Thank you. That's perfect. Okay, So, Pat, I
- 16:53Speaker 3: have one question for you.
- 16:54Speaker 5: You you've experienced so much success in golf, and and
- 16:57Speaker 5: obviously you know you're you're continuing to sperience success. Is
- 17:01Speaker 5: there a particular or a favorite philosophy or a style
- 17:04Speaker 5: of golf play that you endear with to like that
- 17:08Speaker 5: that that kind of guides you to to you know,
- 17:11Speaker 5: all these victories in.
- 17:12Speaker 6: Golf, well, the uh, playing without the big mistake was
- 17:19Speaker 6: always my forte yes, you know I really I really
- 17:22Speaker 6: never got in trouble, you know, and I made bogies.
- 17:26Speaker 6: I mean everybody makes bogies. But but staying away from
- 17:29Speaker 6: the you know, those big crooked numbers are the is
- 17:33Speaker 6: the key and are the keys to success in a
- 17:36Speaker 6: long tournament. You know, I a seventy two holes on
- 17:39Speaker 6: the tour, you know, seventy two holes in our West
- 17:42Speaker 6: Virginia state am. But you know so, so I always
- 17:45Speaker 6: just tried to limit my mistakes and uh, and then
- 17:49Speaker 6: not worry so much about the results as as the
- 17:53Speaker 6: process as so much the process it took to get
- 17:55Speaker 6: the results. And and if if you do that, then
- 17:59Speaker 6: typically your score ends up being a little bit lower
- 18:01Speaker 6: than than if you if you do have those worrisome ideas.
- 18:06Speaker 3: What's what was the best part of your game? Was
- 18:10Speaker 3: it putting?
- 18:10Speaker 4: Was it off the te what you know, your irons,
- 18:14Speaker 4: your approach, what what what?
- 18:17Speaker 3: What it was your best?
- 18:18Speaker 4: And then and then what advice would you give someone
- 18:21Speaker 4: who's starting to play golf of where they should focus
- 18:25Speaker 4: most on their skill set?
- 18:27Speaker 3: First?
- 18:29Speaker 6: Yeah, everybody, I mean I would think eight, eight or
- 18:33Speaker 6: nine out of ten players would say my short game,
- 18:36Speaker 6: you know, around the greens, when came from one hundred
- 18:38Speaker 6: yards in was was my strength. But however, you know,
- 18:42Speaker 6: I was good at all what I considered, and you know,
- 18:46Speaker 6: I worked hard on my game, but I was good
- 18:49Speaker 6: at all aspects of the sport. But I didn't feel
- 18:52Speaker 6: like I was great at any aspect of the sport.
- 18:55Speaker 6: But you know, so so therefore I didn't have a
- 18:58Speaker 6: lot of weaknesses. The I didn't hit it, you know,
- 19:01Speaker 6: super far as uh as some of them did. But
- 19:04Speaker 6: I hit it far enough. But you know, I didn't
- 19:07Speaker 6: you know, my iron game was you know, elite for
- 19:10Speaker 6: this state, but not not for the national level. Uh
- 19:14Speaker 6: but but still it wasn't the best in the state.
- 19:17Speaker 6: But you know so I just thought my whole all
- 19:20Speaker 6: around game when you put it together, was the reason
- 19:24Speaker 6: was it was the reason that I I did win.
- 19:27Speaker 6: You know what I won?
- 19:29Speaker 4: Well, you know, one of the one of one of
- 19:32Speaker 4: my issues is like when when if I could get
- 19:35Speaker 4: off the t.
- 19:36Speaker 3: Okay, that's it.
- 19:37Speaker 7: I think coach trying to get some free lessons and
- 19:40Speaker 7: you send us.
- 19:44Speaker 3: I just tried to understand. I understand the mindset.
- 19:48Speaker 6: You know.
- 19:48Speaker 3: I was never really very good.
- 19:50Speaker 4: Off the t irons. I was, I was pretty decent.
- 19:54Speaker 4: I used to hit a two iron really well. So
- 19:56Speaker 4: I quit hitting my driver and started using my two iron.
- 19:59Speaker 4: And and I'm saying this only because, like I think
- 20:03Speaker 4: most people who don't have the true knowledge of golf,
- 20:07Speaker 4: we make these kind of changes in our mind thinking
- 20:11Speaker 4: that that's going to actually make our game better.
- 20:13Speaker 3: But that's really not the case. Am I right on that?
- 20:16Speaker 6: Yeah? Really, golf has has changed or morphed over the
- 20:22Speaker 6: last ten to fifteen years, especially with the equipment the
- 20:27Speaker 6: golf ball. Now it's all about links, if you don't
- 20:33Speaker 6: have certain speeds at certain ages in your life, you're
- 20:37Speaker 6: never going to get to where you need to be
- 20:38Speaker 6: to be on the PGA tour. So now now everybody
- 20:43Speaker 6: you know is swinging it at one hundred and eighteen
- 20:46Speaker 6: to one hundred and twenty five miles an hour, clubhead
- 20:48Speaker 6: speed ball speeds of one hundred and eighty to one
- 20:51Speaker 6: hundred and ninety. You know, where I grew up with
- 20:54Speaker 6: equipment that your bass speeds were one hundred and fifty, so,
- 20:58Speaker 6: you know, and the courses were you know, we're much shorter,
- 21:02Speaker 6: but they still played the link that they need to play.
- 21:05Speaker 7: Now.
- 21:06Speaker 6: It's it's a game of it's a game of youth.
- 21:09Speaker 6: It's a game of kids that come from uh, you know,
- 21:14Speaker 6: golf academies that they really don't even go to high
- 21:16Speaker 6: school mainly, and uh and that's all they focus on
- 21:20Speaker 6: and and they just learn and they're so good at
- 21:23Speaker 6: such a young age that it's just amazing, you know,
- 21:27Speaker 6: watching the you know, where the where the golf has
- 21:30Speaker 6: has gone. You know, over over the last couple of decades.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Do you think that.
- 21:36Speaker 4: Tiger's impact has has because I know for a fact,
- 21:40Speaker 4: Tiger's impact has has impacted as a lot of black
- 21:44Speaker 4: folks that will get out there now and play. His
- 21:48Speaker 4: impact in golf period to all people, male and female,
- 21:54Speaker 4: How big? How big really is that when you when
- 21:57Speaker 4: you look from your vision, how big is that?
- 22:00Speaker 3: Like? What did he really do?
- 22:02Speaker 6: Oh my gosh, he took golf to the levels that
- 22:05Speaker 6: nobody ever dreamed of. The you know, that's the worldwide.
- 22:10Speaker 6: It wasn't It wasn't just inner city black youth, right,
- 22:13Speaker 6: and you know a good story about about that, And
- 22:16Speaker 6: it wasn't Tiger per se. I got to meet Michael
- 22:20Speaker 6: Jordan in the early nineties playing in a tournament and
- 22:24Speaker 6: he had the same effect on inner city black youths
- 22:28Speaker 6: as what Tiger did on golf around the world. It
- 22:31Speaker 6: was amazing to see people just wanting to get a
- 22:34Speaker 6: glimpse of Mike of Jordan, you know, in this golf
- 22:38Speaker 6: turn which was the Western Amateur which I was playing in,
- 22:40Speaker 6: and we repaired, you know, one group from each other,
- 22:43Speaker 6: and I got so I got to talk to him
- 22:44Speaker 6: on the t's, got to meet him in the locker room,
- 22:46Speaker 6: and it was it was unbelievable. The thousands and thousands
- 22:51Speaker 6: of kids age eight to twelve or thirteen that just
- 22:54Speaker 6: were running around just trying to see Jordan on a
- 22:57Speaker 6: golf course, not on a basketball Yeah. Yeah, and and Tiger,
- 23:01Speaker 6: you know, you know which it was. Golf was exponentially
- 23:06Speaker 6: more so, uh more impactful than than what what Jordan
- 23:10Speaker 6: was in that aspect. It's just amazing. It's He's the
- 23:14Speaker 6: most important, uh golfer that's been in my life that
- 23:18Speaker 6: I've seen. And I'm sure every almost everybody else would
- 23:21Speaker 6: say that the tour can be the most thankful because
- 23:24Speaker 6: of the amount of money that they play for and
- 23:26Speaker 6: it's solely because of Tiger.
- 23:27Speaker 3: Yeah for sure.
- 23:29Speaker 5: Hey, so we're gonna we're gonna wrap it up here
- 23:31Speaker 5: in a minute with you packcause we know you have to.
- 23:33Speaker 3: We have things to do.
- 23:33Speaker 5: You've you've got to play in the West Virginia Amateur
- 23:36Speaker 5: this weekend at the Greenbrier. You've qualified again, correct, Yeah.
- 23:41Speaker 6: Fortunately, Uh with being a being a previous champion that
- 23:45Speaker 6: you can play. You know, you have a lifetime exemption.
- 23:48Speaker 3: Okay, okay, So yeah.
- 23:50Speaker 6: My my game's not great right now. Battle I've been
- 23:53Speaker 6: battling a little bad back, but but it seems to
- 23:56Speaker 6: be progressing a little bit, so I'm hoping to play
- 23:58Speaker 6: all four rounds ever missed the cut. Yeah, you know,
- 24:01Speaker 6: there in my career, so I hope I keep that
- 24:04Speaker 6: streak going.
- 24:04Speaker 3: Oh at least, Well, that was something.
- 24:07Speaker 5: I wanted to touch on. You mentioned you were fifty seven.
- 24:10Speaker 5: How is the field look? I mean, does it seem
- 24:13Speaker 5: like every year there's a little bit of a younger
- 24:16Speaker 5: push coming in and lesser of the of the guys
- 24:19Speaker 5: that are, you know, in our age group.
- 24:22Speaker 6: Yeah, I would think that you're going to see people
- 24:28Speaker 6: competing for the championship this year, and you know, I'm
- 24:31Speaker 6: not considering myself one of them. I would say that
- 24:34Speaker 6: the age group will be yeah, thirty and under everybody. Okay,
- 24:40Speaker 6: you know, Christian brand should be the favorite. I mean
- 24:42Speaker 6: he's he's our best golfer nurse in the state. But
- 24:47Speaker 6: youth wise, you'll see sixteen to sixteen year old, seventeen
- 24:50Speaker 6: year old and they are all all good players. And
- 24:55Speaker 6: you'll see that's the most amazing thing about the amateur
- 24:58Speaker 6: is you find one or two so young and so
- 25:01Speaker 6: good and we just kind of just dreamed about being
- 25:04Speaker 6: that young again.
- 25:04Speaker 5: Yes, well, we wish you the best of block good looking.
- 25:08Speaker 3: Yeah, good luck man.
- 25:09Speaker 4: We we we're going to get out of here, and
- 25:11Speaker 4: we appreciate your time.
- 25:12Speaker 6: Man, Well, thank you so much for the for the

- 26:47Speaker 2: Now back to the conversation.
- 26:51Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we are back and uh.
- 26:55Speaker 3: And Hollis, I and Lisa.
- 26:58Speaker 7: Normally you're y'all are good co host right, but today.
- 27:04Speaker 3: I think y'all are trying to look slided. I was
- 27:08Speaker 3: trying to get some tips. You wasn't trying doing you
- 27:14Speaker 3: was getting some tips. I was trying. Hollis, have you
- 27:17Speaker 3: have you ever played golf? Yeah? I played, Yeah, you know,
- 27:20Speaker 3: so I can play sensibly.
- 27:24Speaker 4: Is it the hardest sport that you think you've ever
- 27:27Speaker 4: been associated with?
- 27:29Speaker 7: Well, I played a lot of tennis outside of football, basketball, baseball.
- 27:33Speaker 7: I would say probably baseball's is probably the hardest sport
- 27:37Speaker 7: that I play. But I think the thing with golf
- 27:39Speaker 7: is just you know, you can tell you have to
- 27:43Speaker 7: spend hours and hours and hours, days and days. You
- 27:46Speaker 7: have to log that ten thousand hours because you can
- 27:49Speaker 7: literally hit a ball. You hit that drive, and you
- 27:50Speaker 7: hit a chip shot, putt it, you get it perfect,
- 27:53Speaker 7: and it goes in, does what you want, and then
- 27:55Speaker 7: the next twenty times you hit it, it does you
- 27:58Speaker 7: left right. You're not doing anything correct. So it's one
- 28:00Speaker 7: of those things. And to like Pat said, it's just
- 28:04Speaker 7: you verse you, It really is. And I think that,
- 28:09Speaker 7: you know, growing up, because we played you know, football, basketball, baseball,
- 28:13Speaker 7: we played the sports where it's kind of a versus
- 28:15Speaker 7: you somebody else, we didn't necessarily think about how difficult
- 28:20Speaker 7: those sort of single sports are where you really are
- 28:23Speaker 7: in your own head, and if you haven't kind of
- 28:25Speaker 7: a you know, you're in your head that day, you're
- 28:28Speaker 7: just not gonna you're in your head.
- 28:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I tried. I tried. Can I say that? Can
- 28:35Speaker 3: I try?
- 28:36Speaker 5: Actually it started in my backyard years many moons ago,
- 28:40Speaker 5: and a friend of mine had played golf at you see,
- 28:43Speaker 5: I was young, obviously, and he was like, you gotta
- 28:45Speaker 5: you know. He gave me a driver, He's like and
- 28:47Speaker 5: I hit the ball and I was like, wow, I
- 28:48Speaker 5: did great, and he said, okay, you know, so let's
- 28:51Speaker 5: take this to coon skin. I lasted three holes and
- 28:54Speaker 5: I threw the club and I was like, this is
- 28:56Speaker 5: not for me. And I rode around in the car
- 28:58Speaker 5: and that was it. That was my big golf experience.
- 29:01Speaker 5: Like I just have the mindset, the everything about it.
- 29:04Speaker 3: It's really hard, it.
- 29:06Speaker 4: Really is, man, and I've been trying to play it
- 29:09Speaker 4: for for a long time.
- 29:10Speaker 3: I haven't played.
- 29:11Speaker 4: I probably played like three or four times in the
- 29:13Speaker 4: last the last few years for a whole host of
- 29:16Speaker 4: different reasons. But my plan is to at some point
- 29:21Speaker 4: I'm going to get what I'm going to consider pretty
- 29:24Speaker 4: good to where I'm sumfortable.
- 29:26Speaker 3: That's see.
- 29:27Speaker 5: You guys both are going to be our next golf pressure.
- 29:30Speaker 3: The amateur definitely going to play. Yeah. My plan is,
- 29:33Speaker 3: My plan is I'll.
- 29:34Speaker 4: Cheer you on, you know, just because like it's it's
- 29:37Speaker 4: difficult not to it's difficult to yourself not to be
- 29:42Speaker 4: good at it.
- 29:42Speaker 7: And I think it's one of those sports I would
- 29:45Speaker 7: really and that's the reason I asked you the question
- 29:47Speaker 7: about just kids in general play. I would really love
- 29:49Speaker 7: to see more kids play a sport like that so
- 29:52Speaker 7: they just understand how to deal with the middle side
- 29:55Speaker 7: of whatever they're going through and how to auto correct
- 29:58Speaker 7: yourself in like kind of getting your own mind and
- 30:01Speaker 7: then getting out and just playing.
- 30:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that would be cool too, but I
- 30:05Speaker 4: think they would have to start it at a younger age.
- 30:08Speaker 7: But well, I don't necessarily mean, like he said, not
- 30:11Speaker 7: necessarily that you're going to go be up golf, bro,
- 30:14Speaker 7: but just to play, even like if you just pick
- 30:15Speaker 7: it up in high school and just to kind of
- 30:17Speaker 7: get out there.
- 30:18Speaker 3: It's a great hobby.
- 30:19Speaker 5: It's a great pastime and something when you get older
- 30:21Speaker 5: and you can't really be like the jogger, the you know,
- 30:24Speaker 5: doing the things with you know, it's.
- 30:26Speaker 3: Something you can do. It's a great mental testest.
- 30:28Speaker 4: But see, like two, it's not like it's starts. You
- 30:33Speaker 4: can start it like a hobby or something that you
- 30:36Speaker 4: just like to do. But there's a but there's something
- 30:39Speaker 4: about golf that works you into there's obsession over it,
- 30:46Speaker 4: like like you're not okay just being yeah, like you
- 30:50Speaker 4: you're just not comfortable with being okay, you know you.
- 30:56Speaker 3: I got to be better than everybody who I'm.
- 30:58Speaker 4: Playing with, and and and I don't know if there's
- 31:02Speaker 4: and I guess that's true for maybe all sports, but
- 31:05Speaker 4: there's something about golf that makes me feel like you
- 31:08Speaker 4: have to you have to be good, like you know,
- 31:13Speaker 4: I've got a couple of golf tournaments coming up, and
- 31:15Speaker 4: I haven't played in a while, so I'm seeing myself
- 31:17Speaker 4: like hitting.
- 31:18Speaker 3: The ball way left, way right, dribbling it off the
- 31:20Speaker 3: tea and you need to go to the driving range
- 31:24Speaker 3: that I'm not sure that's gonna fix it anyway.
- 31:29Speaker 4: But now, interesting, interesting conversation. We're gonna switch gears drastically here, Yes,
- 31:39Speaker 4: Kaitlin Carr Clark supposedly, And I guess I don't know
- 31:45Speaker 4: if the suit's going through or but there's been conversation,
- 31:50Speaker 4: so it's not confirmed, but there's conversation about that with
- 31:55Speaker 4: her and and Reese, Angel and Angel Reese and I
- 32:01Speaker 4: and I know this has a has a racial tone
- 32:06Speaker 4: to it, but it's a funny one to me actually,
- 32:09Speaker 4: because to me, and I'll take anybody's criticism here when
- 32:16Speaker 4: I say this, to me, Caitlin Clark is the reason
- 32:19Speaker 4: why I watch the WBA w NBA, and I don't
- 32:23Speaker 4: really watch the NBA. If I get a chance to
- 32:27Speaker 4: watch her, I'm watching her because because of the notoriety. Now,
- 32:32Speaker 4: I don't necessarily think that the notoriety that she's getting
- 32:36Speaker 4: or what she's got, what she got is unfair because
- 32:41Speaker 4: people are saying, oh, all the attention is on her
- 32:44Speaker 4: just because she's white and she's good.
- 32:46Speaker 3: I don't really think that that's the case.
- 32:49Speaker 7: I think, you know, I go back to Bird and Magic, right,
- 32:53Speaker 7: there wasn't There wasn't a racial piece to that. There
- 32:55Speaker 7: was two great players trying to figure out who's the
- 32:58Speaker 7: best player in the NBA. And see that's where and
- 33:01Speaker 7: that's where I'm at because I look at this, I
- 33:05Speaker 7: just and this is gonna be a criticism of the WNBA.
- 33:08Speaker 7: Whoever is the marketing department, it's just awful. They're awful.
- 33:14Speaker 7: This was the moment in which the w NBA could
- 33:17Speaker 7: take two young superstars. This was their Magic and Bird moment, right,
- 33:21Speaker 7: you know why, and even even going back to when
- 33:24Speaker 7: they were drafted, why didn't one go to the Eastern
- 33:26Speaker 7: Conference and one go to the Western Conference? And you
- 33:29Speaker 7: could literally replicate it what it took the NBA to
- 33:33Speaker 7: get popular because remember seventies, sixties fifty, NBA was not
- 33:37Speaker 7: the sport, right right, Their championships were on delay, tape delay.
- 33:41Speaker 7: They weren't even lying.
- 33:42Speaker 5: And I'll go, I'll go a step further. I'll go
- 33:44Speaker 5: to step further. The w NBA is capitalizing on all
- 33:48Speaker 5: this notoriety and all this rivalry between Clark and Reese.
- 33:52Speaker 3: But it's not on the on the court. It could
- 33:54Speaker 3: be on the.
- 33:54Speaker 5: Court, I agree there, but they're capitalizing on all of
- 33:58Speaker 5: the talk of the you know w NBA analysts saying,
- 34:02Speaker 5: you know, one's a victim and ones being bullied, and
- 34:05Speaker 5: and and.
- 34:06Speaker 3: They're promoting that.
- 34:07Speaker 5: And ESPN has been doing the same on some of
- 34:09Speaker 5: their w NBA shows, and and and go a step
- 34:12Speaker 5: further than that. I think they've scheduled these two teams,
- 34:15Speaker 5: the Sky and who's the other team, Fever? Sky and
- 34:19Speaker 5: Fever are going to play. You know normally, I don't
- 34:21Speaker 5: know how many games they normally play like, you know,
- 34:23Speaker 5: competition the teams in the in the league. But they're
- 34:26Speaker 5: playing five times this year and this is the first.
- 34:28Speaker 3: Game they're in the same conference, so they do always
- 34:31Speaker 3: play five Okay, okay.
- 34:33Speaker 7: But I'm sorry, go ahead, no, you go ahead. No,
- 34:36Speaker 7: I'm just saying to your point, and you're exactly right,
- 34:38Speaker 7: And it's why not make the issue on the court, right,
- 34:44Speaker 7: because they're trying to make all these ancillary issues that
- 34:46Speaker 7: are eventually going to fade right and are are kind
- 34:49Speaker 7: of silly. But why not make the issue on the court,
- 34:52Speaker 7: because what you can do. You can make it about
- 34:54Speaker 7: the variants of style, Andeur Reese plays one way, Caitlin
- 34:57Speaker 7: Clark plays another one. Right, you can make it about they're.
- 35:00Speaker 3: The best two players, what they do at.
- 35:04Speaker 7: Their age and what they're at And then even on
- 35:06Speaker 7: top of just setting them to a side, you have
- 35:08Speaker 7: a sup a megastar, Agia Wilson.
- 35:13Speaker 3: Who gets lost in this.
- 35:15Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean she's she's she's literally her shoes sold
- 35:19Speaker 7: out like in like five minutes after his release. So
- 35:22Speaker 7: it's like just whoever does the marketing for the w BA.
- 35:26Speaker 7: It's just they consistently dropped the ball.
- 35:28Speaker 4: I'm thinking it's because I truly think that they think
- 35:32Speaker 4: that this piece of it is.
- 35:36Speaker 3: Is golden by itself. You know, they don't need to
- 35:42Speaker 3: touch it.
- 35:43Speaker 4: They can just let it be, just let it progress,
- 35:48Speaker 4: and and they're gonna get more viewers.
- 35:49Speaker 3: They're gonna get more. Do you But do you feel
- 35:52Speaker 3: like it turns people off? It? Kind of? Yeah?
- 35:55Speaker 5: For me, it's a total and complete turn off. Like,
- 35:58Speaker 5: I don't want it. I don't want I want to
- 36:00Speaker 5: see the sport. I want to see the athletes. I
- 36:02Speaker 5: want to see them, like you said, on the court, competing,
- 36:05Speaker 5: showing their talents and doing what they do best.
- 36:08Speaker 3: And this this side, you know.
- 36:10Speaker 5: This little side circus they got going on about, you know,
- 36:13Speaker 5: the racism, and.
- 36:15Speaker 3: I just don't feel like that's really it. I don't
- 36:17Speaker 3: feel like it.
- 36:17Speaker 5: I feel like it's two women athletes that are very
- 36:20Speaker 5: competitive and they don't like each other.
- 36:22Speaker 3: I don't care what color they are, they just don't
- 36:24Speaker 3: like it. That's fun and they make it fun. They
- 36:29Speaker 3: got to compete against others, want to get you want
- 36:32Speaker 3: to do that on the court.
- 36:34Speaker 7: And you know, and again I understand racial politics and
- 36:37Speaker 7: you know, all things that we do, sports politics, education, whatever.
- 36:41Speaker 7: But at some point it's like, dang, I just like we,
- 36:43Speaker 7: like you said, I want to see the athletes. I
- 36:45Speaker 7: want to see the game. I want to see these
- 36:48Speaker 7: two young superstars lift that incount age. Wilson is to
- 36:53Speaker 7: lift that league to new heights. And I think that's
- 36:56Speaker 7: the opportunity and that gets lost in all.
- 36:58Speaker 4: The And I'll say this to me when I when
- 37:04Speaker 4: I try to put those two athletes side by side,
- 37:09Speaker 4: and to your very very valid point, early on they
- 37:12Speaker 4: play different positions, you know, but when you look, when
- 37:16Speaker 4: you look at it, you know, Caitlyn is she's scoring more,
- 37:22Speaker 4: shooting more, assists more. She's she's she's more of what
- 37:28Speaker 4: She's a Steph Curry.
- 37:29Speaker 7: She's a modern She's a modern basketball player. Where Reese
- 37:33Speaker 7: is the throw, based is the throw.
- 37:35Speaker 3: I love it. She you know, she's not going she's
- 37:39Speaker 3: not out there shooting threes.
- 37:41Speaker 4: She's underneath the basket, she's grabbing the rebound, she's doing
- 37:45Speaker 4: all these kinds of things. And so you could make
- 37:47Speaker 4: the case that it would be like comparing somebody who's
- 37:51Speaker 4: playing who's running track and another person who's playing football
- 37:55Speaker 4: is so different.
- 37:57Speaker 3: Because they don't do the same thing. And that's what
- 38:00Speaker 3: makes it fun.
- 38:01Speaker 7: And I think the conversation could really be that, you know,
- 38:04Speaker 7: just about just how they're going to play different and
- 38:07Speaker 7: because you have a throwback player which I can appreciate
- 38:10Speaker 7: it back to the basket player, and then you have
- 38:12Speaker 7: this modern player, and you know, we could really be
- 38:15Speaker 7: talking about that and like which one's gonna win the
- 38:17Speaker 7: championship sort of thing.
- 38:19Speaker 3: But go ahead.
- 38:21Speaker 5: I was just gonna say, you know, I really feel
- 38:23Speaker 5: like if the if the sports analysts, the w NBA
- 38:25Speaker 5: analysts would just kind of you know, kind of keep
- 38:28Speaker 5: toning it down and let the girls, excuse me, let
- 38:31Speaker 5: them do their spicy tweets toward each other and their
- 38:34Speaker 5: social media, you know, the kind of jag you know,
- 38:35Speaker 5: they jab at each other. That's fun because that's competitive.
- 38:39Speaker 5: It's not really you know, going going that next level
- 38:43Speaker 5: as far as like what the some of the analysts
- 38:45Speaker 5: are doing. They're pushing it to a point that it's
- 38:47Speaker 5: almost a political kind of feel. We don't write that well,
- 38:52Speaker 5: not in sports.
- 38:52Speaker 4: Well because right now, and I'm gonna say for for most,
- 38:56Speaker 4: for most, for the for what I would think in
- 38:59Speaker 4: the fan base, I would think the fan base really
- 39:03Speaker 4: wants to try to figure out who's just the best player,
- 39:06Speaker 4: and unfortunately or fortunately they're both best players in different things.
- 39:10Speaker 7: But I don't think they're figuring out who's the best player.
- 39:12Speaker 7: I'm figuring out they're figuring out like who they like stylistically, right.
- 39:17Speaker 7: I think it's that. I think it's like you're figuring
- 39:20Speaker 7: out what style you're like. And the women of the
- 39:23Speaker 7: w NBA are winning so hard if you look at
- 39:27Speaker 7: like their peril line, like I told you, like Angel
- 39:29Speaker 7: Wilson has the hottest shoe right now. Angel Reaches just
- 39:32Speaker 7: released her shoe. Kaitlin Clark is going to be releasing her.
- 39:35Speaker 7: They're doing McDonald's commercials, they're on cereal boxes. They are
- 39:38Speaker 7: winning so hard right now far as on that end.
- 39:42Speaker 7: But yet we're just talking about something.
- 39:44Speaker 3: That's just not it's not there. You know what I'm saying.
- 39:48Speaker 4: Has a w NBA taking the wrong path? And this
- 39:52Speaker 4: may even play into how you started a college? Did
- 39:55Speaker 4: they take the.
- 39:56Speaker 3: Wrong path in how to grow your your your league?
- 40:00Speaker 3: Because I think there is some this controversy.
- 40:05Speaker 4: We're talking about it, ESPN's talking about it, so that's
- 40:08Speaker 4: getting it out, But is that getting the league out
- 40:11Speaker 4: or have they done an injustice to the entire league
- 40:15Speaker 4: and not promoting the advancement of it.
- 40:19Speaker 3: I think one hundred percent, because I think again they.
- 40:23Speaker 7: Adage all bad publicity's good publicity doesn't matter long as
- 40:27Speaker 7: this publicity rights.
- 40:28Speaker 4: As you.
- 40:28Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't necessarily buy into that. I don't want
- 40:31Speaker 7: some bad publicity. But I think what's happened is that
- 40:35Speaker 7: the opportunity that I saw and we saw, we talked
- 40:38Speaker 7: about a lot a lot of this last year, was
- 40:40Speaker 7: that the style of play, the grittiness, the back to
- 40:44Speaker 7: the basket play. The traditional basketball fan, if you grew
- 40:48Speaker 7: up watching basketball in the nineties and eighties and you
- 40:51Speaker 7: watch the NBA versus WNBA, you're probably going to lean
- 40:55Speaker 7: more to the w NBA just because of the.
- 40:57Speaker 3: Style of play.
- 40:58Speaker 7: Yeah, And I think that's what they could have played up, Like, look,
- 41:02Speaker 7: we're not soft like the men's league. We're just not
- 41:04Speaker 7: out here just shooting. This ain't pretty because even if
- 41:07Speaker 7: you look at somebody like Andrew, she's a beautiful woman,
- 41:09Speaker 7: but she plays gritty and ugly and I love it.
- 41:12Speaker 7: I love that ses on the floor, I love that
- 41:14Speaker 7: she gets in rebounds. I'm loving that style of play.
- 41:17Speaker 7: And I think in addition to like sort of the
- 41:19Speaker 7: glamorous side of what they did, which I thought they
- 41:21Speaker 7: do a good job of, like Christy Brinkley and short
- 41:24Speaker 7: of like these women are essentially supermodels, but they have
- 41:28Speaker 7: a style of play that's a throwback. And I think
- 41:31Speaker 7: if they would have wa far as marketing would have
- 41:33Speaker 7: merged those two things, kind of skip the controversy for now,
- 41:37Speaker 7: focus on that, because again, even if you look at
- 41:40Speaker 7: how leagues grow, if you study the NFL, if you
- 41:43Speaker 7: study the NBA, they had to kind of get away
- 41:47Speaker 7: from the controversy, focus on the play, get the play
- 41:50Speaker 7: to where they could get it, and then they were
- 41:52Speaker 7: able to capitalize on the marketing side of it. And
- 41:55Speaker 7: then obviously, you know you can market play, mark right
- 42:01Speaker 7: market that's what is going to keep you coming back
- 42:03Speaker 7: right right.
- 42:04Speaker 5: And also, this is another point that I want to
- 42:06Speaker 5: bring up about the NBA. You think about the household
- 42:09Speaker 5: names that have come from that league. You know, WNBA
- 42:12Speaker 5: started in nineteen ninety seven, you really haven't heard a
- 42:15Speaker 5: lot about individual players until recently with Caitlin Clark and
- 42:19Speaker 5: Angel Reese and who was the other last Jels. Yes,
- 42:22Speaker 5: so they're they're they're making strides in getting closer to
- 42:27Speaker 5: having those household names, which is something that's essential. You
- 42:30Speaker 5: got to have that to be on the same level
- 42:32Speaker 5: as the NBA. And it's going to take a minute
- 42:35Speaker 5: because you think about the NBA was established in what
- 42:38Speaker 5: nineteen forty nine, and and you know wa WNBA was
- 42:42Speaker 5: nineteen ninety seven, So they've got a hot minute to go.
- 42:45Speaker 3: But you know, this is a this is a good start.
- 42:47Speaker 3: I mean, they're they're going in.
- 42:48Speaker 5: The right direction, but they need to steer it back into,
- 42:51Speaker 5: like you said, focusing on the play on the court,
- 42:55Speaker 5: you know, promoting that strategic type of game rather than
- 42:58Speaker 5: the flashy style that the NBA provides.
- 43:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 43:00Speaker 4: Well, and I think and I think where you where
- 43:04Speaker 4: the competitiveness of the w n B A is outstanding
- 43:08Speaker 4: to me. You don't need anything else just if you're
- 43:14Speaker 4: just out there playing, If they're just playing and they're
- 43:16Speaker 4: not talking, if they're not talking off the court about
- 43:19Speaker 4: anything other than the game itself that they playing, I
- 43:23Speaker 4: think it's a I think it's I think it's the
- 43:25Speaker 4: top sport to watch and I and I think they're
- 43:30Speaker 4: losing that.
- 43:30Speaker 7: I think that I agree with you one hundred percent.
- 43:33Speaker 7: And I just say, like we're living in a time
- 43:35Speaker 7: where it's just like we're constantly innundated with bad news
- 43:38Speaker 7: right where there's politics, where this what is that, it's
- 43:42Speaker 7: it's always something because now we get everything. It's not
- 43:45Speaker 7: even back in the day where you're kind of just
- 43:47Speaker 7: stuck to your local state news.
- 43:49Speaker 3: We get everything from around the world.
- 43:51Speaker 7: So at some point when you have the opportunity in
- 43:55Speaker 7: a sport that I believe is on the rise, that
- 43:58Speaker 7: I believe is a had a point inching closer better
- 44:01Speaker 7: to its predecessor. And even like I talked about the marketing,
- 44:05Speaker 7: marketing is important as far as like the shoe deals
- 44:07Speaker 7: and stuff you have, Probably the top three shoe lines
- 44:10Speaker 7: are gonna be women now that far as far as
- 44:13Speaker 7: the new not like not count Jordan's, but the top
- 44:16Speaker 7: when Kaylen Clark, Angel Rees and Angel Wilson when they
- 44:19Speaker 7: got the shoe, they're gonna be the tops. They're gonna
- 44:21Speaker 7: be the number one sellers. So you have an amazing opportunity.
- 44:24Speaker 7: And I just wish to your point, Lisa, that the commentators,
- 44:28Speaker 7: that the talking heads at the national.
- 44:30Speaker 3: Level don't blow it. Yeah, well you're yeah, you're not
- 44:34Speaker 3: gonna be able to point.
- 44:35Speaker 4: Yeah, when when when those shoes drop and the publicity
- 44:39Speaker 4: comes with those shoes, you don't have time to be
- 44:43Speaker 4: sitting back there talking about some kind of petty stuff
- 44:45Speaker 4: about that happened on the court.
- 44:47Speaker 7: Yeah, because now it's like and it's just like the men,
- 44:49Speaker 7: because now it was like some little some like little
- 44:52Speaker 7: girls and little boys. Now they may know that they
- 44:55Speaker 7: play basketball, but they may just like the shoes, like
- 44:57Speaker 7: we've been with Jordan's and all the other stuff, you
- 44:59Speaker 7: know what I mean. So it's it's like sort of
- 45:00Speaker 7: multi level. So now you can have the play on
- 45:03Speaker 7: the court, you can have the peril, you can have
- 45:05Speaker 7: the personalities. And now the women have taken it a
- 45:07Speaker 7: step further because, like I said, these women are essentially models,
- 45:11Speaker 7: so now it's even that. So now you've got the
- 45:12Speaker 7: little girls who just may look at that Kristin Brinkley
- 45:15Speaker 7: and say she's glamorous, she's beautiful and all. She played
- 45:19Speaker 7: basketball too, So it's like they really got an opportunity
- 45:23Speaker 7: to really do something I think differently.
- 45:26Speaker 5: So let me ask you guys both the question and
- 45:28Speaker 5: we just I just talked about the household names. They're
- 45:31Speaker 5: covering that base, we're covering the merch. Okay, so that's
- 45:35Speaker 5: the second that's another step in going in the right direction.
- 45:37Speaker 5: How is it that the w NBA can convince the
- 45:41Speaker 5: media to give them as much coverage as the NBA gets,
- 45:44Speaker 5: because we all know they've got to buy into it
- 45:47Speaker 5: just as much, you know, money wise as any other
- 45:50Speaker 5: part of them becoming, you know, a popular brand. So
- 45:55Speaker 5: do you feel like the media is buying into it
- 45:57Speaker 5: like as much as the NBA?
- 45:58Speaker 3: I do, I will. I feel like a lot of their.
- 46:00Speaker 5: Games are on ESPN correct rather than the ABC, NBC's
- 46:04Speaker 5: like the NBA is. So how do you convince those
- 46:07Speaker 5: outlets to kind of buy in?
- 46:09Speaker 3: I think they're in, You think I think that I
- 46:12Speaker 3: think they're in.
- 46:13Speaker 4: I just think that what they're what what they're doing
- 46:17Speaker 4: is there's just a few stars that they're that they're
- 46:20Speaker 4: focusing on. They're looking at the things that are going
- 46:24Speaker 4: on in between those things. Which is it which is
- 46:28Speaker 4: limiting the actual play of the game.
- 46:31Speaker 3: When's the last time you heard somebody how many points
- 46:33Speaker 3: they got?
- 46:33Speaker 4: You only got when you say that, well, Reech got
- 46:36Speaker 4: this many, Clark got that many.
- 46:37Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying. It's like a comparison right,
- 46:39Speaker 3: and I would say which goes to the household names
- 46:42Speaker 3: to that point, yes.
- 46:44Speaker 7: I would say the league has they made their I
- 46:48Speaker 7: believe in the future they're gonna maybe think about starting
- 46:50Speaker 7: the season at a different time. Okay, I think starting
- 46:53Speaker 7: the season in the spring, because what happens is you
- 46:56Speaker 7: started after basketball season pretty mint NBA ends, and then
- 47:00Speaker 7: it's awkward because it starts at like the end of
- 47:02Speaker 7: the school year, going in the summer, yes, right.
- 47:05Speaker 3: So number one, but you go ahead.
- 47:08Speaker 7: I'm just saying, like number one, like a lot of
- 47:10Speaker 7: people sort of are transitioning as far as kind of
- 47:13Speaker 7: what else they're doing because there's other stuff going on.
- 47:16Speaker 7: So it's like the schedules not necessarily set. And I'm
- 47:19Speaker 7: talking about kids, yeah, summer vacation, different things like that.
- 47:23Speaker 3: So I think that it's tough just when it starts.
- 47:27Speaker 7: I don't know far as kind of when that could be,
- 47:30Speaker 7: if that can be tweaked, because I think the goal
- 47:32Speaker 7: for them is to have all eyes on them, but
- 47:35Speaker 7: it's difficult in that season.
- 47:37Speaker 3: It's just difficult because it's out of season.
- 47:42Speaker 5: Put it there. Then they're competing with college and NFL.
- 47:46Speaker 3: That's what I don't have anything.
- 47:51Speaker 4: That is a major problem because you don't really have
- 47:54Speaker 4: a place. You don't want them competing against football. But
- 47:57Speaker 4: I would say, here's.
- 47:58Speaker 7: How I mean, I'm I'm not saying that this is it,
- 48:02Speaker 7: but this may be just a suggestion. I would possibly
- 48:05Speaker 7: start it in January. No mid season NBA, because mid
- 48:11Speaker 7: season NBA up until like kind of a little bit
- 48:14Speaker 7: after the All Star Break is just a blah watching
- 48:18Speaker 7: basketball during that season. So I'm saying, if you had
- 48:20Speaker 7: the season started in January, didn't have your championship, either
- 48:24Speaker 7: right before the playoffs or right before the men have
- 48:28Speaker 7: their the NBA has their championship, So I wouldn't possibly
- 48:32Speaker 7: consider moving it to that. I mean, it's a little crowded,
- 48:36Speaker 7: but it's not as crowded. Baseball necessarily hasn't started yet.
- 48:39Speaker 7: College football season's ending, NFL ending, so really the only
- 48:43Speaker 7: thing that's really started that the basketball midway point, and
- 48:46Speaker 7: it's drys heck midway point basketball.
- 48:49Speaker 3: It's not good basketball during that time.
- 48:51Speaker 7: So I would start the season in January until January, February, March,
- 48:56Speaker 7: April ended in May, so it's ending now. So my
- 48:59Speaker 7: my champion beion ship series right before the men's So
- 49:02Speaker 7: that way it would you can watch the women's and
- 49:04Speaker 7: then you watch.
- 49:05Speaker 3: The men's do we I need to be the commitsion.
- 49:09Speaker 3: So you got here, so I'm.
- 49:11Speaker 4: Assuming you're a commissioner. Yeah, I'm gonna treat you as
- 49:15Speaker 4: a commissioner. So the n b A, can you shut
- 49:20Speaker 4: down the number of games? I mean like that, because
- 49:23Speaker 4: that I mean they to me, they they played too
- 49:25Speaker 4: many teams.
- 49:25Speaker 7: Anyway, Unfortunately, I know that guy. It's the way the guys,
- 49:29Speaker 7: it's about money. It's guaranteed contracts in the NBA. The
- 49:33Speaker 7: guys getting paid exhamited in the amount of money. So
- 49:35Speaker 7: it's just way too much money. So nah, and I
- 49:38Speaker 7: think that's to me, that's the beauty of the w
- 49:39Speaker 7: n b A. It's not as many games, so they
- 49:41Speaker 7: can go a lot harder for a lot that shorter period.
- 49:45Speaker 4: And what makes it, what makes it attractive is how
- 49:47Speaker 4: hard they go. And if you if you flip through
- 49:50Speaker 4: the channels and you see an NBA game, it's one guy, Yeah,
- 49:57Speaker 4: it's one or two guys.
- 49:58Speaker 3: Even watching the game last night.
- 49:59Speaker 5: It was just oh yeah, it was yond I turned
- 50:04Speaker 5: it on and they were up by like twenty.
- 50:06Speaker 3: I can't believe this is like a com final. This
- 50:09Speaker 3: is awful. How do you get a conference final with
- 50:13Speaker 3: with those types of scores?
- 50:14Speaker 5: It was, it was bad, and you know, the viewership
- 50:17Speaker 5: was like, you know, it's a week not anyway, you're
- 50:20Speaker 5: not work.
- 50:21Speaker 3: You're not standing up for that.
- 50:22Speaker 4: What you realized it looks like now we can't say
- 50:26Speaker 4: they can't come back?
- 50:27Speaker 3: Would you lose me once?
- 50:29Speaker 4: You?
- 50:29Speaker 3: Yeah, get on and it's a three to one series.
- 50:32Speaker 7: So it's just like me many, well, Hallis, I think
- 50:39Speaker 7: you have to you have to run. So me and
- 50:42Speaker 7: recent me and Lisa, well, well we'll close out.
- 50:49Speaker 3: So you know.
- 50:50Speaker 5: Kind of going on this theme that we're talking about
- 50:53Speaker 5: with the w n b A and the NBA, I
- 50:55Speaker 5: wonder if there's a way they could partner like the
- 50:57Speaker 5: teams like you know, like Hollis said, start the season
- 51:00Speaker 5: for the w NBA in January. I think that's an
- 51:02Speaker 5: excellent idea because the season does get kind of boring
- 51:05Speaker 5: at that point, and then maybe pair up like you
- 51:08Speaker 5: could do like a doubleheader or some type like you
- 51:10Speaker 5: could have like your Dallas Mavericks versus the WNBA or
- 51:14Speaker 5: not versus, but you could have their game first and
- 51:16Speaker 5: then follow up.
- 51:17Speaker 3: With the women's team in Texas. I'm not sure which
- 51:19Speaker 3: team it is.
- 51:20Speaker 5: I'm not that familiar, but do something that would promote
- 51:23Speaker 5: the WNBA kind of get you know, arm in arm
- 51:26Speaker 5: with the NBA to kind of help get them going.
- 51:29Speaker 3: Kin And if I'm understanding you, are they doing that? Well? No,
- 51:33Speaker 3: I don't think so, but I'm wondering. Let's assume Let's
- 51:39Speaker 3: say I just say.
- 51:40Speaker 4: Minnesota NBA team, NBA team or WNBA team in Minnesota.
- 51:46Speaker 3: Right, That's what I mean. So could they to me
- 51:49Speaker 3: I'm looking at that, could they play back to back?
- 51:51Speaker 3: That's what I mean? Yes, yes, so I would think
- 51:54Speaker 3: that would be that would be ideal.
- 51:57Speaker 4: Now, the problem if I'm the NBA is what the
- 52:01Speaker 4: w NBA looks like after me, because it's gonna look
- 52:05Speaker 4: because you're gonna you're you're gonna turn off the NBA
- 52:09Speaker 4: probably and wait on the w n B a game
- 52:12Speaker 4: just because at this point it's a one or two
- 52:15Speaker 4: guy possibly on the team.
- 52:18Speaker 3: But even that guy's not I don't know. I don't
- 52:22Speaker 3: know if it's they're not necessary.
- 52:24Speaker 4: I don't want to say not notable, but it's not
- 52:27Speaker 4: a draw like they're not the person.
- 52:29Speaker 3: You know, there's not. You don't have to w n
- 52:31Speaker 3: B A NBA. NBA is not the draw. Yeah, I
- 52:34Speaker 3: don't think the NBA is the draw. I don't know.
- 52:37Speaker 5: I think I think I'm gonna go a different opinion
- 52:40Speaker 5: on that. NBA is still popular. I mean, I know this,
- 52:45Speaker 5: especially this time. I like to watch it this time
- 52:47Speaker 5: of you're except for the game last night, I mean,
- 52:49Speaker 5: I like the playoffs.
- 52:50Speaker 4: See how many how many times are you getting those
- 52:52Speaker 4: type those types of games?
- 52:54Speaker 3: You know, they're they're they're they're happening more and more.
- 52:57Speaker 4: Yeah, so now you're shutting it off halftime, you know
- 53:00Speaker 4: you're going to bed.
- 53:00Speaker 3: You know, it's just it just is.
- 53:02Speaker 4: And you're also there's there's there's not necessarily the old
- 53:07Speaker 4: Laker team, the old Celtics team where you know everybody.
- 53:11Speaker 3: On the team.
- 53:11Speaker 4: You know a couple of people on the team, and
- 53:14Speaker 4: and that's it. So the teams are not being they're
- 53:18Speaker 4: not well known overall, right, which they used to be.
- 53:24Speaker 4: Now the w n B A is basically the whole
- 53:27Speaker 4: w NBA is surrounded by maybe three to four or
- 53:31Speaker 4: five players.
- 53:32Speaker 3: Yeah that's about it, and that's about it at this point.
- 53:36Speaker 4: And but but yet people are attracted to those Well, I.
- 53:42Speaker 5: Think it's well, it's kind of like what what Hollis
- 53:45Speaker 5: was saying in the beginning about the style of play,
- 53:48Speaker 5: and you've said this too. If you want that strategic
- 53:52Speaker 5: type of old school basketball, then you're you're going to
- 53:56Speaker 5: naturally be attracted to the w n b A and
- 53:58Speaker 5: watching those games. But if you still like those flashy,
- 54:02Speaker 5: dunking three pointer type of games that are you know,
- 54:05Speaker 5: for some people that's that's what they like to watch
- 54:07Speaker 5: in basketball, not so much fun the fundamentals, then they're
- 54:11Speaker 5: attracted to the NBA. So I think it's two different
- 54:14Speaker 5: entertainment values that people are seeking, and so one league
- 54:18Speaker 5: meets the needs of this type of audience and then
- 54:22Speaker 5: the other meets the needs of the you know, a
- 54:24Speaker 5: different audience. So to me, pairing them up would be
- 54:29Speaker 5: like the best of both worlds.
- 54:32Speaker 3: Right Yeah.
- 54:37Speaker 4: The kind of fan that I am to say, basketball,
- 54:42Speaker 4: I want to see I want to see the guy
- 54:46Speaker 4: or the girl, you know what I'm saying, whoever that
- 54:48Speaker 4: person is or what it used to be used to
- 54:51Speaker 4: be the team, right, you know, I wanted to see
- 54:53Speaker 4: the Lakers. I wanted to see the Celtics.
- 54:55Speaker 3: I want you know what I'm saying, Like, and you
- 54:56Speaker 3: don't think it's still team oriented.
- 54:58Speaker 5: I do think a lot of people are kind of
- 55:00Speaker 5: like the NFL, you have a team regardless of the players.
- 55:03Speaker 5: Like for me, I'll bring it up. I like the
- 55:06Speaker 5: Packers and whether Aaron Rodgers fan, I like Jordan Love
- 55:11Speaker 5: So I mean to me, it's the same with the NBA.
- 55:13Speaker 5: People have a team and they follow that team regardless
- 55:16Speaker 5: of who plays plays it.
- 55:17Speaker 3: They don't follow players. See, I'm thinking you don't think that. No,
- 55:22Speaker 3: I don't just see I don't know, I really don't.
- 55:26Speaker 3: I really your opinion. I really think, I.
- 55:30Speaker 4: Really think that that they that it does follow the
- 55:34Speaker 4: players now in W the W n b A, I
- 55:37Speaker 4: think it is, well it was, it's all.
- 55:39Speaker 5: The n b A, the NBA, I still which has
- 55:42Speaker 5: a bigger viewership and and more household names and people
- 55:46Speaker 5: know the names of the teams.
- 55:48Speaker 3: I mean, I think the I think they remember the team. Well, yeah,
- 55:53Speaker 3: you remember the team. But I'm thinking they're still following now,
- 55:56Speaker 3: they're following players maybe the younger generation. Yes, yes, okay,
- 56:02Speaker 3: you know and and and I'll give you that, Scott,
- 56:05Speaker 3: because I'm gonna say it. I'm just giving you that that.
- 56:07Speaker 7: Steph Curry, you're following him. If he move the team,
- 56:12Speaker 7: you're following him.
- 56:13Speaker 3: I don't know what do you mean?
- 56:15Speaker 5: I mean, I mean, I think people follow teams still.
- 56:18Speaker 5: I don't think we've gotten that far away from it.
- 56:20Speaker 5: Maybe the younger generation, but I mean, I can't see
- 56:23Speaker 5: somebody that has a If you're an.
- 56:25Speaker 4: Old school Laker fan or Celtic fan, you probably are students.
- 56:31Speaker 5: See a lot of like Oklahoma, what are they thunder
- 56:34Speaker 5: or whatever. I don't see a lot of those jerseys
- 56:36Speaker 5: compared to Lakers jerseys or or or Celtic jerseys. I mean,
- 56:41Speaker 5: I still think the old school Go.
- 56:42Speaker 3: Ahead, all right, producer dropping the help.
- 56:46Speaker 10: I got one player's name that I think, unfortunately goes
- 56:50Speaker 10: with what Carl is saying here. Lebron James, Well, okay,
- 56:54Speaker 10: he has been with what that's like Michael Jordan's well,
- 56:57Speaker 10: but same level, Brian.
- 57:00Speaker 3: Now, no, I'm at the level of popularity.
- 57:03Speaker 5: I'm not saying talent, I'm saying popularity.
- 57:06Speaker 10: I will say this, I have always read it for
- 57:08Speaker 10: the Chicago Bulls because I grew up in the Jordan era,
- 57:12Speaker 10: and so I started becoming a Chicago Bulls fan when
- 57:15Speaker 10: he was in the league, and I still keep an
- 57:18Speaker 10: eye on what they're doing, So.
- 57:20Speaker 3: I will give you that.
- 57:21Speaker 10: But I think it just kind of depends because some teams,
- 57:25Speaker 10: like the Bulls, have been in that championship talk for years,
- 57:29Speaker 10: and then there are other teams out there that have
- 57:31Speaker 10: had good players but they never really got all the
- 57:34Speaker 10: way through. And so you know, you developed that relationship,
- 57:39Speaker 10: you kind of follow that player, and so you do
- 57:41Speaker 10: kind of follow them around the league.
- 57:42Speaker 5: But so you're you're kind of being You're kind of
- 57:44Speaker 5: being Switzerland here.
- 57:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I like it. I like it.
- 57:49Speaker 5: That's a good way to handle it.
- 57:51Speaker 3: And I hate and I hate to say this, but.
- 57:57Speaker 4: When you throw the Bronze name out there, I don't
- 58:02Speaker 4: know if I just don't know if anybody's quote following him.
- 58:07Speaker 3: Oh come on, if you you.
- 58:10Speaker 4: May have followed him from the start, but now you're
- 58:15Speaker 4: you're twenty teams in.
- 58:19Speaker 3: That's a fair point. You're twenty teams in. Like, dude,
- 58:23Speaker 3: I can't you know, you took me.
- 58:25Speaker 7: From the East coast to the West coast, from the
- 58:27Speaker 7: north and south.
- 58:28Speaker 4: I mean, like, I can't, I can't. I can't roll
- 58:31Speaker 4: with you, you know, because I actually.
- 58:33Speaker 3: Did like that.
- 58:34Speaker 5: But are they truly fans of the team or are
- 58:36Speaker 5: they just just watching the player?
- 58:38Speaker 3: I mean, are they rooting actively? Old school?
- 58:41Speaker 4: I think they were the team and all the players
- 58:43Speaker 4: that were on the team today, I think it's the player.
- 58:47Speaker 10: With Lebron, he was fine until he went to the Lakers.
- 58:50Speaker 10: He went to the team other than the Chicago Bulls.
- 58:54Speaker 10: You got it's the Bulls, the Celtics, and the Lakers.
- 58:57Speaker 10: If you talk about any of those three teams, Yeah,
- 58:59Speaker 10: you know immediately, And I think when he jumped to
- 59:02Speaker 10: the Lakers, it was almost like the opposite thing. It
- 59:05Speaker 10: was like, Oh, he's going out there because he wants.
- 59:07Speaker 3: To build a super team.
- 59:09Speaker 10: Yeah, like it became too obvious.
- 59:11Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, oh for sure, I'll agree with that.
- 59:15Speaker 3: Well, we're probably not gonna take this anywhere. I think
- 59:22Speaker 3: we'll just all agree to disagree somewhat. Yeah. Yeah, you know.
