- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with the Hall of Fame head coach of the
- 0:01Speaker 1: Huskies Yukon and Xavier tomorrow night at the Excel Center,
- 0:04Speaker 1: and that'll be a seven o'clock pregame for a seven
- 0:06Speaker 1: thirty tip and that's over on the River one O
- 0:08Speaker 1: five nine if you want to catch that, and it's
- 0:10Speaker 1: also available as always on the Varsity Network app and
- 0:14Speaker 1: the Varsitynetwork dot Com. Here with Gino as we talk
- 0:17Speaker 1: Yukon women's basketball. And one of the topics that came
- 0:20Speaker 1: up today during the media session with page out Obviously
- 0:23Speaker 1: other people the chance to step up, and Caitlin Chen
- 0:25Speaker 1: is one of them, because you know, when she played
- 0:27Speaker 1: for Carlott Princeton, she was the number one option on offense.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Certainly that is not the case here at Yukon, and
- 0:33Speaker 1: she has shown that, particularly in her assist numbers that
- 0:35Speaker 1: have gone significantly up at seven on Sunday for example.
- 0:40Speaker 1: But now she's probably gonna look to score a little more.
- 0:43Speaker 2: I think, so, you know, and that's something we've discussed
- 0:48Speaker 2: that seemed to be kind of her comfort level at
- 0:53Speaker 2: the beginning of training camp and at the beginning of
- 0:56Speaker 2: the season and the little bit at a time, you know,
- 1:01Speaker 2: her focus started to become more working to get other
- 1:07Speaker 2: people involved, and I admire that, but I think you
- 1:12Speaker 2: can accomplish that much better by.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Being such a threat to score yourself.
- 1:19Speaker 2: And she's really good at finishing around the basket. You know,
- 1:24Speaker 2: she has a good mid range pull up, and she's
- 1:28Speaker 2: a better three point shooter than I think she was
- 1:30Speaker 2: at Princeton, So there's a lot of things that she
- 1:34Speaker 2: can do off and.
- 1:35Speaker 3: She's a really good free throw shooter.
- 1:36Speaker 2: So there's a lot that she can bring and I
- 1:39Speaker 2: don't want her to sacrifice all that just to try
- 1:42Speaker 2: to get us threes. I think the more she tries
- 1:44Speaker 2: to score, the more she will score, and actually the
- 1:48Speaker 2: more threes will get because the people will know that
- 1:52Speaker 2: they have to collapse, that they can't just fan out
- 1:54Speaker 2: waiting for the past.
- 1:56Speaker 1: She better defensively than you thought she would be.
- 1:58Speaker 3: She can be. Yeah, I think she.
- 2:02Speaker 2: I think she's adjusting because I don't I don't know
- 2:05Speaker 2: that Princeton picked up full court a lot, so what
- 2:09Speaker 2: we're asking her to do maybe a tad different than
- 2:11Speaker 2: what she's used to.
- 2:13Speaker 3: But I feel like.
- 2:17Speaker 2: I feel comfortable, uh that if we have her and
- 2:20Speaker 2: KK out on the floor together, that we can, you know,
- 2:24Speaker 2: we can do some things, and and we did it
- 2:27Speaker 2: in a Notre Dame game in the second half. We
- 2:31Speaker 2: did it in the USC game in the second half.
- 2:33Speaker 2: So it's you know, we prove that we can do
- 2:35Speaker 2: it and and that does actually help the two of them,
- 2:45Speaker 2: and especially Kate and Caitlin find ways to score that
- 2:53Speaker 2: aren't necessarily scripted in the half court, you know, which
- 2:57Speaker 2: I think helps players like her.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Yeah, well that's part of your figure it out thing
- 3:02Speaker 1: that still exists. Is it Is it as relevant now?
- 3:05Speaker 1: Is it ever has been? Or because the way the
- 3:08Speaker 1: kids don't practice nearly as much coming in coming into
- 3:11Speaker 1: ukon prior.
- 3:13Speaker 3: It's it's yeah, it's it's a tough thing because.
- 3:19Speaker 2: You you want to be able to figure things out,
- 3:24Speaker 2: but you also have to have thick skin.
- 3:27Speaker 3: And you have to have a mentality of.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Yeah, just let me go and let me do my thing,
- 3:36Speaker 2: and if I screw it up, I don't care. You know,
- 3:40Speaker 2: I think too many times, you know, players want to
- 3:42Speaker 2: be directed, you know, they want to be sure.
- 3:46Speaker 3: It's like.
- 3:48Speaker 2: If you're talking to a second baseman and he says, okay,
- 3:51Speaker 2: so if the balls hit to me here, who do
- 3:54Speaker 2: I throw it to Well, it depends. Well, what if
- 3:57Speaker 2: it's it to me here? Well, it depends.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:00Speaker 2: I mean, you can't make these decisions ahead of time.
- 4:03Speaker 2: You have to read the play and you have to
- 4:05Speaker 2: make a play too many times. These kids want to
- 4:09Speaker 2: know what's my next step. Well, we don't know what
- 4:13Speaker 2: that is. So you're going to have to figure that out.
- 4:18Speaker 2: And it's okay if you make a mistake, provided you
- 4:22Speaker 2: don't make the same one over and over and over again.
- 4:25Speaker 2: And the biggest difference, I think that is the fear
- 4:28Speaker 2: of making mistakes. That's probably inherent in a lot of
- 4:31Speaker 2: kids today.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Yeah, Asy's back, getting herself in a little bit more
- 4:37Speaker 1: of a rhythm. But I've got to imagine with this
- 4:39Speaker 1: stop and go, with the little knix that she has
- 4:42Speaker 1: injury wise, that does not help for me. For me,
- 4:45Speaker 1: not only just a playing standpoint, but from a shooting standpoint,
- 4:48Speaker 1: because you're not in there game after game after game
- 4:50Speaker 1: getting the reps that you need.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's been it's been a tough go for
- 4:54Speaker 2: her the last couple of years. You know, there's been
- 4:59Speaker 2: so many, as you said, starts and stops, so many
- 5:05Speaker 2: missed opportunities that it's got to affect your rhythm, it's
- 5:10Speaker 2: got to affect your.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Your view of you know, self.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Confidence even because any kind of doubt in an athlete
- 5:23Speaker 2: is not good. And as he is a thinker, you know,
- 5:27Speaker 2: as he is a perfectionist. So it's it's it's gonna
- 5:34Speaker 2: take a little bit of time for her to get
- 5:36Speaker 2: back into as they say, back into the flow of things.
- 5:40Speaker 2: But as we watch and practice, you know, she's getting
- 5:43Speaker 2: closer and closer and.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Without Page, now we're really gonna need her.
- 5:50Speaker 2: You know, she's got to be that that threat.
- 5:54Speaker 3: That we have to have.
- 5:57Speaker 2: So I'm hopeful that that that this lapse where we
- 6:02Speaker 2: don't have Page helps Hazy.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, the Louisville game, it certainly looked like she
- 6:07Speaker 1: was getting back to herself. And the one play that
- 6:09Speaker 1: stands out for me is the post a place she's
- 6:12Speaker 1: on the right side of the floor, backs or defender down,
- 6:15Speaker 1: does a spin, does a reverse. That's the asy that
- 6:17Speaker 1: you know, we got to see when she was in
- 6:19Speaker 1: her in good.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Shape and confident. Yeah.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's the biggest thing, you know, feeling confident
- 6:26Speaker 2: that regardless of what what the scenario, that that that
- 6:31Speaker 2: I find myself in I got something for that. You know,
- 6:34Speaker 2: if I need a reverse layup, I got it. If
- 6:36Speaker 2: I need to pull up, I got it. If I
- 6:37Speaker 2: need a open three, I got it.
- 6:39Speaker 3: You know.
- 6:42Speaker 2: That that kind of mentality is what gives you confidence
- 6:48Speaker 2: and it allows you to play more aggressively. So yeah,
- 6:54Speaker 2: but it's you know, it's it's January. If this was,
- 6:57Speaker 2: you know, the first week in March, I wouldn't feel
- 6:59Speaker 2: as good. But we got a long way to go.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Yeah, sure do.
- 7:03Speaker 1: And it starts tomorrow night with Xavier back with Gino
- 7:05Speaker 1: with more on the Yukon women's basketball coaches, showing a
- 7:07Speaker 1: minute here on Learfield
