- 1:47And welcome back to the Boundary Corner Podcast, a part of the
- 1:51College Huddle Network along with my partner, Brian Siegler
- 1:53and our special guest host tonight, Coach Robert Compton.
- 1:57I am Curtis Wilson and as always, we are brought to you by
- 2:01the Counts Family Pharmacy, your friendly neighborhood pharmacy
- 2:04three O 1 S Main St. in Blacksburg.
- 2:07And if you are heading down to the spring game this weekend,
- 2:10stop by say hello to Jeremy. If you don't want to say hello
- 2:14to Jeremy there after the game, go say hello to Jeremy and Brian
- 2:20and Pete B from 2D and Dan and you have a fourth.
- 2:25Is it just y'all 3? I don't know if Sam's going to
- 2:28be there or not, Sam. OK, I think Sam, Jesse from Suns
- 2:32of Saturday all going to be at Maroon Door after the game.
- 2:36That should be an entertaining few hours, because I know you
- 2:39are. Not y'all.
- 2:40Can't make me chug a rail because I'm not at TOTS.
- 2:43You're not at Tots. That's true.
- 2:45That's true, yes. We'll also say this me and Brian
- 2:50freshly off of the Carnival Sunshine cruise out of Norfolk,
- 2:54VA, where we got tanned, we drank, makes drinks, we gamble,
- 3:00we were on crystal clear beaches.
- 3:03Looks like the skipper didn't get stranded anywhere this time.
- 3:06No he didn't. The skipper didn't get stranded
- 3:08anywhere this time. Skipper had a fun though.
- 3:11It was a good time, man, it was a good time.
- 3:13You can't see them back here. How many shot glasses did we
- 3:16get? We were there every night with
- 3:17dinner, took at least one shot. I think Brian, you got one extra
- 3:20because you took the Cinnamon Toast Crunch at.
- 3:22The end I took one extra at the end of the week, but I missed
- 3:25Tuesday because we were late getting back from NASA.
- 3:29Did you roll like? Deep in the shot glasses like we
- 3:32used to do with Macadoos in formal.
- 3:34Yeah, Yeah, it was. It was at least it was 8 to 12
- 3:39shots being taken every night at dinner.
- 3:40Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
- 3:42Yeah, I think we had a party at 30 though.
- 3:44So I had the drink package too. So I was drinking all day, all
- 3:48night at dinner. Might as well.
- 3:50I had to get my money's worth. Once you spent the money, you
- 3:52got to go out there and make sure you're getting.
- 3:53Your money's worth. Occasionally Brown would just
- 3:55roll up to me and be like he go. He's just like I got a drink on
- 4:00some way. We'll say this.
- 4:03We both ended plus in the casino PKS at 3:00 AM.
- 4:09In there. Yeah, plus in the casino.
- 4:13Lots of fun in the casino. Yeah, I was.
- 4:15I was up just over 300 I think. Curtis, you were what, 350?
- 4:20I was up No 240. OK.
- 4:23But that last night. I was up.
- 4:27Four grew up a. Lot I was up four and then I I
- 4:30didn't have a good a Good Friday night, but that's OK.
- 4:32Well, the the craps table finally said no Sir.
- 4:37Yeah. And then the blackjack table, we
- 4:39just kept getting well, how many times you hit 21?
- 4:41Like twice or three times or? No, No, no.
- 4:45You hit 23 times and the dealer drew to 21.
- 4:49Drew to 21. Drew to 21.
- 4:52Reason my favorite hand at a blackjack table is like 9:00 and
- 4:554:00. I like a nine four, yeah.
- 4:58I kept getting like 5 and then getting like A8 or or getting a
- 5:02nine or a face card. Like what are you doing?
- 5:06Like stop dealing me these hands.
- 5:08Either deal me something low or deal me something high.
- 5:10Yeah, I kept getting, I kept getting like phase five, phase
- 5:146. Just the well it will all
- 5:16depends on how many. Well we will say this ACE or or
- 5:21phase five. Phase 6 is OK with a big table.
- 5:24Yeah. Because with the big table,
- 5:26there's a lot of info out there and you can say, you know what,
- 5:29there is a bunch of face out there.
- 5:31The odds aren't good. So good.
- 5:34Me, Curtis, and one other random dude between us.
- 5:37That was it. And we kept getting bad hands by
- 5:41the way. Got to tell the cool story real
- 5:43quick. So we, we are in the store on
- 5:46the ship, the liquor store, you know where you.
- 5:50I where the $75 Jack Daniels was.
- 5:52The $75, three liter Jack Daniels, 3 liters.
- 5:55I've never seen anything that big in my life.
- 5:58I didn't get that. I got enough whiskey downstairs.
- 6:00That's the that's the part of the story I missed.
- 6:02I just thought it was a regular bottle of Jack for 75.
- 6:05Three liters a different story. Completely.
- 6:08It's a great deal. Yeah.
- 6:10But you got to carry it all the way back to your car.
- 6:14I got 2 bottles of rum. They had Bacardi liters for 15
- 6:17bucks. I couldn't do it.
- 6:19But anyway, so we're sitting there, me and I'm a neighbor,
- 6:23Andrew. Brian, I think this was the day
- 6:25you were in Nassau, Can't remember.
- 6:27But you weren't there. So anyway, I just bought mine.
- 6:31I just asked a couple questions about something and this lady
- 6:35comes behind us notice she's got a Virginia Tech thing on and I
- 6:38just kind of mentioned I'm Virginia Tech fan and she's
- 6:40doing her stuff and we convinced her effectively to instead of
- 6:44she, she got the Woodward's reserve.
- 6:47My neighbor Andrew huge into whiskey told her there's a
- 6:50double oak over there for $10 more go get it.
- 6:54It's a better taste in one and so on.
- 6:55And so and we start chatting with her and, and he mentions
- 7:00offhand, you know, my buddy Curtis here does a, a, a podcast
- 7:04for Genentech football. She stops and she cocks her head
- 7:06towards me and said, then you must know my son.
- 7:10I was like, well, who was that? Fontell mines mines Mama.
- 7:16And I said, not only do I know your son, who he is, I have
- 7:19interviewed your son on my podcast before and he is a super
- 7:23nice guy. She was very nice.
- 7:26I got a picture with her. I'll I'll have that up.
- 7:28It was, it was funny though. Small world.
- 7:31The the just the fact that she's wearing Virginia Tech stuff is
- 7:35awesome considering where he went to school.
- 7:37True. Well, I, I think, I think his
- 7:39Mama knows who who pays the bills.
- 7:43Yeah. Brian, anything you want to
- 7:46share from the excursion? Oh man, riding the golf carts up
- 7:52and down Bimini was pretty awesome.
- 7:55Got to check out a guy harvesting some some conch right
- 8:01out right out the the water there and then, you know, even
- 8:06it from a shack that you know is held up by ply board.
- 8:09And there was some some really good and really, really
- 8:18interesting folks that we met there.
- 8:20So I was just just excited to kind of take all that in,
- 8:24experienced that and yeah man it was a good time.
- 8:28And like like like I said, I took advantage of the drink
- 8:30package on the boat so y'all know I was feeling good most of
- 8:34the time. Yeah, he was feeling good most
- 8:37of the time. Never got like shit faced I was.
- 8:41I was just like, I just had a steady buzz most of the day.
- 8:44Yeah, I don't know for sure, but I've always been told that you
- 8:48can drink a lot more and not feel nearly as it's true.
- 8:54Drop dead drunk. It's true on a cruise then you
- 8:57can anywhere else because of the boat.
- 9:00You feel half drunk when you're sober.
- 9:02You do. It's not a lie.
- 9:05So it is true. Like there were a couple days I
- 9:08had, I don't know, I had 3-4 drinks in a tight period and
- 9:11like I didn't feel it. Like I didn't feel it although
- 9:15Monday. Oh yeah, Monday the shift was
- 9:19rocking baby and they it was raining sideways in the morning
- 9:23and then in the afternoon the the water got choppy and one
- 9:27time she like listed to the left and like held for a a little
- 9:32bit. I was.
- 9:33Like, oh, all right, this isn't bobbing and weaving.
- 9:36This is just bobbing. We just.
- 9:38Holding the line right there I was in my room, I.
- 9:41Felt like I was in the Smooth Criminal music video.
- 9:44I've been, I've been Western North Carolina right now long
- 9:47enough and I probably could have managed that.
- 9:49I feel like one leg's getting shorter than the other already
- 9:51standing on the heel. I'd have been good to go there.
- 9:55We go, well, just so you know, it's out of Norfolk now, man,
- 9:59and they're doing Bahamas and Brian, I looked up, they're
- 10:02doing an Eastern Caribbean where you can go to Turk Grand Turks,
- 10:06come back by half, Boone Bay, the Super nice little island on
- 10:11the western part of the Bahamas. And then the celebration key.
- 10:16Whale next time. Both of y'all's first cruises.
- 10:19Both. Yeah.
- 10:19OK. I've always heard stories that
- 10:22once you go always, you're going to go forever.
- 10:26Well, you're. Already planning the next?
- 10:29One, I mean, it's, well, I mean for price per person and what
- 10:33you get and where you go, it's unbeatable.
- 10:38I mean, and Brian got the drink package and clearly he was
- 10:41having the time of his life with a bunch of mixers and beers and
- 10:46anything you want. Yeah, I was out there like if if
- 10:50it was on the menu, I'm like, all right, give it to me some
- 10:53some of the like rare rums that they had in a couple of bars
- 10:56there, like made some African rum, they had some Caribbean
- 10:59rum, they had some. Give it to him.
- 11:01Yeah, yeah, whatever it is. So you know, you get a it's rum,
- 11:04you get, you get you get a two finger for like 18 bucks or
- 11:08anything under 20 bucks is in the drink package.
- 11:10So. It's true.
- 11:14Well, as much fun as that was and again looking potentially
- 11:20going again, although we'll like we messaged you in November, you
- 11:23should just. Come with us.
- 11:25You should just came with us, we'd have a fun week Spring.
- 11:28Break didn't. My spring break is next week.
- 11:31Yeah. Well, maybe we'll look at, maybe
- 11:35we'll look at the summertime. There we go.
- 11:37There's Lavar. School places on my spring break
- 11:39next week. Let me think this week there in
- 11:43the Caribbean, you probably could find a room and go to the
- 11:45Bahamas probably for like $1000, yeah.
- 11:49I'm going to Windmill Bakery and I'm just as happy about that as
- 11:51I would for those of you that know.
- 11:56You know if. You know, you know, and if you
- 11:59where we're from, you definitely know.
- 12:00But anyways, we got a spring game to unload.
- 12:04Riley went down to Blacksburg for a few days.
- 12:07Can't tell the whole story, He can get in trouble, but go, go.
- 12:10Got some insight, got some thoughts on things.
- 12:12So we're going to talk about that.
- 12:13Then we're going to do a little spring game preview, kind of
- 12:16look at each position and what we're feeling on each position.
- 12:19Talk about a few players here and there.
- 12:21But Robbie, I want to start with you.
- 12:24Obviously you went down for the coaches clinic where you got to
- 12:28mingle with all the coaches, the new coaches, the old coaches,
- 12:31see some practice, see some things, learn some things.
- 12:34And I want to start because I know we know you're a defensive
- 12:36guy and I know you spend a ton of time with the defense inside
- 12:40those seminars and those trainings.
- 12:43Give me your impression of Sam Cephas because he is the biggest
- 12:46unknown in this group more than anybody else.
- 12:50But what is your biggest impression of him just as a
- 12:52person, as a coach? He he's a he's he's a very as a
- 13:00person, as a coach. The man is a teacher.
- 13:03And I know he's he said it in in several of his things that I've
- 13:08watched since he's taking the job there at Virginia Tech.
- 13:12Trying to follow him, trying to figure out, you know, looking at
- 13:15his old stuff where he's been watching some film and stuff
- 13:19from Wofford, watching some stuff with the Cardinals, which
- 13:23are two totally different, well, not totally different looks, but
- 13:28so much more involved with the Cardinals, obviously with a
- 13:33group of pros compared to, to Wofford.
- 13:37But you can tell he's a teacher. And he, he said it itself, it's
- 13:43a coach is, is an educator to start with.
- 13:46And he makes things so simple to the individuals in the room that
- 13:53he's teaching his stuff to by giving things in chunks and
- 13:59pieces, He calls them buckets. And, and it's, it's simple
- 14:04education stuff that I use everyday, you know, taking
- 14:07little pieces, building scaffolding, taking things, you
- 14:11know, here things, you know, here, building pieces on to it.
- 14:15So it all comes together in one piece.
- 14:17And I think that's going to be huge in in allowing the guys
- 14:21that they have there to, to learn this defense quickly and
- 14:26effectively and be able to take off running when when they get
- 14:30there. Can I ask you this, the stuff
- 14:33you went through, did you feel like after sitting and hearing
- 14:36him explain things that you could just go out like I can do
- 14:38this through, I can, I can teach these elements like that.
- 14:41Absolutely. Like I felt like just by
- 14:43hearing, just by talking now I, I have a little bit more of a
- 14:48base knowledge than the average person would.
- 14:51But just the way he talked about things and put some things
- 14:54together, I mean, it clicked to me.
- 14:56I mean, I felt like I could go out and I could get a call and
- 15:00hear it and know exactly where I needed to be, where anybody
- 15:02needed to be at any time. So yeah, I mean, he very
- 15:07effective teacher and that's going to help a lot with, with
- 15:13younger guys coming in with everybody learning a new system
- 15:18and some things like that. It's going to help tremendously,
- 15:20I feel. Yeah, that's, that's exciting.
- 15:25And I mean, I, you know, when you talk about the buckets and
- 15:27kind of breaking down those things in the small pieces, I
- 15:29think that's a, a big key, especially when you're learning
- 15:34a new system like, like the Hokies are this year.
- 15:38Being able to, to to make things digestible and to layer what
- 15:44you're implementing in a way that, you know, we, we can do
- 15:48almost like, you know, like a college course that you got one
- 15:50O 120-1301 and you just kind of build it on it as you're going
- 15:54along there. So, but that was that was
- 15:59fascinating to see and to be able to to pull things there.
- 16:06As a high school coach, I feel like I run a system that's
- 16:11similar to some of the stuff that that Cephus does, obviously
- 16:16at a much, much more basic level in high school than than the
- 16:22complexity of some of the stuff that we know he can do by
- 16:26watching films from from Arizona and and things like that.
- 16:31But it was very easy for me to pick up the way he was, the way
- 16:35he was showing things, the way he was teaching things to us and
- 16:39just simple things. And how it could build on so
- 16:42much and make it be so simple for his players to understand
- 16:48and to pick up and to be able to run, but would look so complex
- 16:53to anybody outside of it that didn't know how it's built.
- 16:57Yeah, let me ask this Robbie. So like a lots been made about,
- 17:02you know, needing a a a Buddha Baker type to for this thing to
- 17:07run the way you want it to. Is it is what you're seeing is
- 17:10are you going to need that caliber a player, not
- 17:13necessarily a Buddha Baker, but someone that can cover a lot of
- 17:17ground like that for this thing to function the way it needs to
- 17:20I. I think to have a guy like that
- 17:22is never going to hurt, but I don't.
- 17:27I don't necessarily know just from my experience and and with
- 17:33with a defense similar, you don't necessarily have to have
- 17:36that guy. If everybody's on the same page
- 17:40and everybody understands their purpose and their
- 17:43responsibilities and certain things that one guy can make
- 17:51some bits and pieces that aren't exactly perfect look incredible.
- 17:57Yeah. Yeah, but I think I think you'll
- 18:02be able to. I think the defense as a whole,
- 18:06I mean in my opinion, he ran stuff similar at Wofford and
- 18:10didn't have a Buddha Baker type guy and was obviously from from
- 18:16the statistics that show at Wofford, he's very successful
- 18:19with it. So I think it can be done pretty
- 18:24well without it. It just got you.
- 18:26It comes down to knowing your personnel and I think he
- 18:29understands what he's given them and what he has and that that
- 18:34he'll find that good mix of what he needs to make it effective.
- 18:39Is this kind of like a balance between being able to be more
- 18:44risky in some areas because you've got that caliber of a
- 18:48player versus trying to learn more to a more risk averse and
- 18:52sound? Yeah, I feel like standpoint,
- 18:56OK, I feel like it is now when you can, when you can find that
- 18:59kind of player, you can do some things that are maybe a little
- 19:02more unconventional and, and take a little bit more risk
- 19:05because you know, you've got some athleticism there.
- 19:08They can back you up and and take you out of some spots.
- 19:11But I think just what I know about some of the players and
- 19:18things like that, I think he's got a good foundation to put
- 19:21some things together and he's going to have people in the
- 19:23right spots to to figure out what he needs to do with it.
- 19:26Nice. Let's look to the offense real
- 19:28quick. What did you notice?
- 19:30I know you didn't spend as much time, but obviously you had
- 19:33colleagues that were spending time with Montgomery, but what
- 19:37did they notice about him and just what were the feelings from
- 19:40them about how he ran his areas and how the players reacted and
- 19:45things like that? They're, you know, as a coach, I
- 19:51don't believe in putting another coach down.
- 19:59I think Bowens had his, had his positives, had his pluses and
- 20:04things that he did. But you could, to me, you could
- 20:08tell there was more of a optimism or confidence in the
- 20:14fact that Montgomery's coming in with experience.
- 20:18He's put together offenses top to bottom, showed success,
- 20:24things like that. And you could kind of feel that
- 20:28almost somewhat of a relief. Not the uptightness of
- 20:33wandering. You know, there's always going
- 20:35to be skepticism. Bowen came in without a lot of
- 20:39experience calling plays, setting up offense, running an
- 20:42offense. You don't.
- 20:45I don't feel like you felt that with Montgomery.
- 20:50They, they know that he has a track record.
- 20:52He has a reputation, he's been a head coach.
- 20:54He's run offenses, he's run teams.
- 20:57They have that confidence in what he's going to try to do.
- 21:02And it's I feel like it's probably going to be a little
- 21:06bit different than what we've seen the last couple of years.
- 21:11Again, it's early spring practice.
- 21:14It's, you know, first contact scrimmage is what we saw a lot
- 21:20going to be different from there to the next week, much less the
- 21:24spring game and then to the fall.
- 21:26But I feel, I feel like there, there's some, there's some good
- 21:31things there and and definitely some some good change that's
- 21:36going to that should give some people some optimism, not so
- 21:40much hype like we saw last year, but some optimism for the
- 21:45process is going well and going in the right direction.
- 21:50So instead of like so last year we had a lot of momentum and I
- 21:52know we talked about this a lot, Curtis and Robbie.
- 21:55I know we talked about it kind of off camera a little bit.
- 21:58Like there was a lot of hype. You know, we kind of saw a upper
- 22:01trajectory in in 23 at the end of the season.
- 22:05You know, you had all these, you know, decent run there at the
- 22:09end and we're like, you OK, we probably lost two earlier in the
- 22:13year. We shouldn't have.
- 22:14There's a whole lot of optimism. You had national media buying
- 22:17into it. You had the fan base that I
- 22:19probably, you know, hyped it into oblivion.
- 22:21You know, this time last year we were having some very serious
- 22:24discussions about, you know, can this team win, you know, 10
- 22:28games and things like that. And I think, I think we don't
- 22:34necessarily have any of that hype in this in this team, But I
- 22:37think there's also, I think like you said, a kind of reserved
- 22:41confidence of all right, well, if, if this, if this goes the
- 22:45way it could go, we might be on to something.
- 22:48And and that's not to say we're going to go out there and win
- 22:51810 games. I don't think we we're
- 22:52necessarily talked about wins or losses yet, But I think getting
- 22:56some some new blood in those coordinator rooms, I think is
- 23:01going to be a little bit of a shot in the arm for some of
- 23:04these guys. And I think packing in,
- 23:07especially on offense experience, not only, you know,
- 23:11you looking at, you know, flipping over the the offensive
- 23:13line room, but also what you're doing in the coordinator room
- 23:15there. It feels like you're taking some
- 23:19some of the correct steps you need to take to maximize the
- 23:22talent that's already on this offense.
- 23:24Absolutely 100. Percent.
- 23:27Bike I was, I was hyping the thing up after being there last
- 23:35year myself. Like I felt really good about
- 23:38what you about what I saw at the beginning of it.
- 23:42I feel good about what I saw this year and things like that.
- 23:46But there's just a different luck plays a big part into that.
- 23:51I mean, you get injuries and stuff early on.
- 23:53You get things banged up, you get the right players banged up
- 23:56in the right spots and that makes a turn real quick where
- 24:02who immediately gets to blame for it play call in and things
- 24:06like that. I'm not saying that that doesn't
- 24:08have a part in it, but some of the other factors too that a lot
- 24:14of teams you don't, they're not going to blame it on those
- 24:16things, but it pay, it plays a lot into it.
- 24:20And I think just the the experience, the all of those
- 24:28things that they have in the in place now with a little bit of
- 24:32luck, I think you're going, you're going to see a, I'm not
- 24:36going to say, you know, I'm not predicting any number of wins or
- 24:41anything, but I'm saying you're going to see a difference just
- 24:44unfold that that should show some momentum, should show some
- 24:48growth. So I feel, I feel pretty
- 24:52confident in that part. Got you real quick.
- 24:56So as you speak to the coordinators, obviously Stew
- 24:58Holtz now just a special teams coordinator and kind of helping
- 25:01out with the offense, anything with him in the new set up like?
- 25:07Yeah, I, I, I talked to, I talked to Coach Holt a little
- 25:09bit. And when I say coach Holt, I
- 25:12have to mean Stew or his dad, because I've had a, I've had a
- 25:15long running, long running relationship there with his dad,
- 25:20coached against him some when he was at Rocky Mountain High
- 25:23School. I have to go to the field.
- 25:26It's named after him here at * Mountain High School.
- 25:32So I deal a lot with with the Holts.
- 25:36But the the way things have kind of changed, the way they've kind
- 25:41of set up some things, I think it works out better for him to
- 25:46just be focused on his special team stuff.
- 25:51He, I'm sure he misses talking to his dad, you know, he misses
- 25:55position coaching stuff. Any coach is going to want to
- 25:58coach as much as possible, but I feel like by looking at what we
- 26:03saw at practice and stuff, there was always something involved
- 26:06special team wise when other things were going on.
- 26:10Changing structure then change the structure.
- 26:13So your practice structure is huge and, and we've done some
- 26:17things like that, like some teams will practice, you know,
- 26:23offensive ones against scout and in high school, offensive ones
- 26:27against scout, special teams in the middle, defensive ones
- 26:30against scout. That's how our 2 1/2 three hour
- 26:33practice is set up. We've had it to where, you know,
- 26:38varsity's on offense, J VS on defense and then we can split
- 26:42the JV up some at different times and do some special team
- 26:46stuff with them here, special team stuff with them there.
- 26:49And it looked to us, it looked to me like at practice the other
- 26:53day when I saw it, they're involving more things like
- 26:57they're doing certain group packages in different places,
- 27:00while some other guys that would typically be OK, we're going to
- 27:05go to individual stuff, they're doing a little more special team
- 27:09stuff. OK.
- 27:10So they're they're, so he's not just running around with the
- 27:12specialist while these these individual drills are going on.
- 27:16He's maybe maybe pulling a line here, pulling a line there and
- 27:19doing some. Some special team drill.
- 27:22It's not a corner full of kickers just standing around
- 27:26pulling Bryan. You, you play.
- 27:29You played college football. You know what those kickers do
- 27:31over there sometimes? Oh yeah.
- 27:33Oh yeah. There's.
- 27:34Some. Crab ass.
- 27:36There's guys that you know, they're still getting individual
- 27:39times and things like that, but there's times scheduled for them
- 27:42to be during doing certain special teams things and stuff
- 27:47like that. So it was very much and then
- 27:49they would have whole group special team stuff at times too.
- 27:53So you won't see as much of that and spring game because it's
- 28:00more of a game type situation. But that's definitely something
- 28:03that I saw more at practice where they're they're putting
- 28:06more emphasis on special teams to make sure those things are
- 28:09right. Nice.
- 28:10How do you see the grills where they checked everybody's
- 28:12numbers? There we go, your.
- 28:15Back's ready to go. Yeah, and we and we still got
- 28:18some, you know, opposite, opposite numbers here.
- 28:22So there's definitely potential for that to go down.
- 28:25Again, let me flip back to the defense real quick because we, I
- 28:28know we, we were kind of curious about what the, the structure of
- 28:34Cephus's role kind of in practice in the, in the room
- 28:39also kind of where Sean Quinn is kind of fitting in with, with
- 28:45some of the other coaches that have been brought on.
- 28:47What was that dynamic like? You can talk at a high level
- 28:50about it. I'm just trying to trying to
- 28:52curious how that played out in in a practice environment.
- 28:59It's, I think it's kind of a fluid situation right now, to be
- 29:04honest. I, I know each one of them has
- 29:06their positions and they have certain specialties.
- 29:09I think that they're, they're working with for certain things,
- 29:13but I think there's some fluidity to learning the entire
- 29:17defense as a process. And I, I think part of that
- 29:21helped a little, little cameo there by the wife.
- 29:26Hey. Ankle.
- 29:32So I think, I think part of that, I mean their positions are
- 29:36defined and what they are, but I think they're still trying to
- 29:39find that identity of matching the personnel to some of the
- 29:44things that they want to do, some of the things that they
- 29:46move around and, and just seeing how certain things fit.
- 29:54I spent, I spent time with obviously in in the, the overall
- 30:00defensive scheme. I spent time listening to some
- 30:03linebacker stuff. I spent time listening to some,
- 30:06well, inside linebacker stuff with Coach DV and then some
- 30:10safety stuff with Coach Prelude. And it's it's still, I think, I
- 30:22think they're using the spring to sort some things out and
- 30:25figure out where their strengths are, what fits best for the
- 30:30personnel and things like that. And it'll be a little more
- 30:33defined when it comes to the to camp time.
- 30:40So it was kind of hard to say, but that they're all very
- 30:43involved on teaching the the basics of what they're looking
- 30:48for out of the defense. And they're all, they're all
- 30:52working together and making sure that each of their guys with
- 30:56their position group knows exactly where they fit in the
- 31:00overall scheme of things. And I think that's kind of where
- 31:04it is right now. And as camp goes on and things
- 31:08like that, I think they'll define it a little more.
- 31:12They'll really figure out who's got to, who's got to work with
- 31:16what and who's got to teach what and things of that nature.
- 31:20I know that probably doesn't give you a whole lot, but it's
- 31:23kind of where it is. And I.
- 31:27Like I said, I'm just trying to like, you know, there's there
- 31:29seems to be overlap with, you know, Quinn's role as outside
- 31:33linebackers. You got Jenny Wilson's role with
- 31:37edges and then you've got Whitehead with Nichols.
- 31:39And I feel like those three at any given moment could really be
- 31:44anywhere touch the other one, right?
- 31:46So especially in this new scheme.
- 31:48Well, you heard today, I don't know if you heard IBM, by the
- 31:52way, Isaiah Brown, Murray and and the ECU got, he was talking
- 31:56about how it's, it's fluid, like he's working with Whitehead and
- 32:00he's in Jones and a couple times he's been with Prelude.
- 32:03He said that aloud and he said because he's primarily nickel,
- 32:07but in some cases it makes more sense to him to go with the
- 32:09corners. In some cases it makes him to
- 32:11stay with the nickel guy. In some cases it makes him to go
- 32:13with Prelude. So clearly that's happening in
- 32:17some way, shape or form. All right, let me let me close
- 32:19this segment out before we get into all of the, the positions
- 32:23you had. Definitely you had multiple
- 32:26speakers, but two were high profile, I mean high, high
- 32:29profile, Bruce Ariens, Super Bowl winning coach and you had
- 32:35Darrell Tapp, the current coach of your Washington team.
- 32:38I ain't going to take the manager because they're always
- 32:40the Redskins. Did you get to interact with
- 32:42them any? Did you get to talk with them?
- 32:44Any one on ones? Anything like that?
- 32:47I I didn't, I didn't carry, I didn't carry a conversation with
- 32:50Bruce Ariens. OK.
- 32:52He, he had he, he had more than enough people to carry
- 32:55conversations with as he was, as he was very popular.
- 32:59You know, I, I spoke to him, I shook his hand.
- 33:02I, I thank him for, for just coming up to, to speak with,
- 33:07with all of us. He, he is as advertised voice.
- 33:13He, he's got a he's got a little swagger to him.
- 33:16He's got a aura to him, you know, and, and his thing is he,
- 33:24he, he love, he loves his players, he loves his, his
- 33:27teams, he cares about people and he cares about doing things the
- 33:33right way, you know, loving the guys, treating people the right
- 33:37way, but doing things the right way.
- 33:40And part of me caring, a part of him caring about his players and
- 33:44caring about his people is being willing to tell them when
- 33:47they're not doing things the right way.
- 33:50And that that was a lot of what his speech and what he talked
- 33:52about was his exact words was his job every year is to get 90
- 33:59dudes and in six weeks fire half of them.
- 34:06And to be honest with you, he goes to be, to have 90 folks and
- 34:11then six weeks later fire half of them and they still talk to
- 34:14you. He goes, you have to do it a
- 34:17certain way. And that kind of stuck.
- 34:20I don't get to fire none of mine.
- 34:22But you know, you, you treat people a certain way.
- 34:26And I didn't know what I like. One of the guys, the guy that
- 34:29introduced him had talked, talked to us.
- 34:32One of the stories he told us about Coach Ariens as a as a
- 34:38athlete at Virginia Tech, he was the and I, I could mess this up
- 34:42a little bit. He was the first Virginia Tech
- 34:45athlete to have an African American roommate.
- 34:49I. Think.
- 34:51That's right and. It was it was, it was Tiki and
- 34:54Ronde's dad. Ronde Barber's dad.
- 34:56Yeah. He said, he said we're going to
- 34:59let it slide, that he's a really good friend of mine and those
- 35:02two boys went somewhere else. I thought that was pretty cool
- 35:07just to to understand the concept of where he's coming
- 35:10from with the with the inclusion of things and stuff like that.
- 35:15So Bruce Arians was absolutely as advertised.
- 35:19I got to I got to talk to to coach tap a little bit more
- 35:25Coach Tap and I have a have a mutual player that both of us
- 35:29have coached and we got to talk a little bit about that.
- 35:33Cantavia St. He plays for the Atlanta Falcons
- 35:36now. He played for Coach Tapp when he
- 35:39was at San Francisco and Coach Tapp had great things to say
- 35:45about Kentavious. Kentavious has always had great
- 35:48things to say about Coach Tapp and it was he sucked.
- 35:52Coach Daryl Tapp is such a down to earth, personable guy.
- 35:56Like, he took time out to have a conversation with me to ask me
- 36:00how Kentavious was doing, you know, things like that.
- 36:04Just to just to be able to interact with somebody like
- 36:09normal, normal people that they'd meet a player, a former
- 36:14player, an NFL coach, you know, somebody of that caliber.
- 36:19A lot of people immediately think, well, he's going to be
- 36:22kind of standoffish. And, you know, he's he, he's at
- 36:27a different level. He's not that.
- 36:29He's not that dude. Like he was there and talked to
- 36:32me for a while. His wife was at the clinic.
- 36:35She sat right beside me. her and I talked before, before he
- 36:41presented. She sat there and listened to
- 36:43all the other coaches talk and was taking notes because I guess
- 36:46she's coaching wherever they're wherever they live.
- 36:50She does some coaching and she was looking for anything that
- 36:53she could use in in in her coaching manners.
- 36:57So I mean, they were, they were awesome, awesome pair to meet
- 37:02and we got to sit down and talk to him a little bit more.
- 37:06Coach Woteki and I, which is my head coach, we've been working
- 37:09together for a while. He coached Contagious too.
- 37:12Coach Tapwood would joke with us and and carry on.
- 37:15So it was it was pretty cool to have that kind of interaction
- 37:20with him. And they were both there when we
- 37:24got there that afternoon for the first day, they spoke, they did
- 37:28their things. They were there with everybody
- 37:30for dinner. They were that back there the
- 37:33next day for practice and everything.
- 37:35Coach Ariens and Coach Tapp and all of them were were out there
- 37:38at practice talking to players, moving around.
- 37:41I mean, it just I've been to clinics where people speak and
- 37:45then they're immediately out the door and gone.
- 37:49But both of them have a little more buy into the thing as they
- 37:52but they're both been part of this team for they're, you know.
- 37:56All their lives. Since the 70s.
- 37:59Oh yeah, so, and I mean, Tap is one of the he's.
- 38:02One of our guys, dude. Carrier man.
- 38:05It was that guy. I mean, yeah, that's that's one
- 38:08of our, we always talk about it because we had the chance to
- 38:10interview him years ago. He's one of our guys.
- 38:13Like our era, Daryl Tap, Xavier Devi.
- 38:17You got to obviously teach you some things and go over some
- 38:20things with you. Those two guys, it's
- 38:21unbelievable that you got to do that.
- 38:24And it's cool that to hear the story of and I'm assuming it's
- 38:28probably around Northern Virginia or DC where his wife is
- 38:30coaching whatever she's coaching.
- 38:31So that's pretty she. Said it was volleyball.
- 38:35Pretty sure she was coaching volleyball now.
- 38:38She's been a like a a personal trainer and run several
- 38:44different sports performance deals in the past.
- 38:49I know that from from her background and where they talked
- 38:52about it so, but that was cool. And then the the other speaker
- 38:57that they had there was was Coach Sherman, who is a head
- 39:01football coach at Fareham now. Wide receiver.
- 39:03Coach on the wide receiver, coach at Virginia Tech.
- 39:08I met him years ago when I was taking a couple of our kids from
- 39:11Halifax to Virginia Tech for recruiting.
- 39:14So to hear him talk about situational stuff, things like
- 39:18that, I got to have another kind of connection to him as our
- 39:22quarterback, our first quarterback from here at North
- 39:24Wilkes High School as quarterback at Fareham.
- 39:27Now he was a starting quarterback last year at
- 39:30Fareham. So he's Coach Sherman starting
- 39:32quarterback. He was our starting quarterback
- 39:34here. So it was it was good to hear
- 39:36him. And again, he has that that
- 39:40Virginia Tech tie to it. And then the, the last guy that
- 39:47spoke on Saturday morning was the defensive coordinator for
- 39:50the University of Richmond, Justin Wood.
- 39:54And he did a, he gave a phenomenal presentation on
- 39:57inside linebackers that I'm really trying to use a lot of
- 40:02the things that he taught to help give my linebackers some
- 40:06good basic knowledge and things. So I mean, All in all, the whole
- 40:10thing was, was for me very successful.
- 40:14I probably got more out of this clinic than I've gotten out of
- 40:16one in years. OK, in those things, so.
- 40:20That's great. That is awesome.
- 40:22Man, I know you. You know, you talk about Tap and
- 40:24like every time we've interacted with Tap, he's like
- 40:26simultaneously the most laid back guy, but like also so
- 40:30energetic. Yes, you can tell he's got
- 40:32passion about it. Yeah, I'm.
- 40:35So. Fascinated about it?
- 40:36Was was Aryans rocking the kangle?
- 40:39Yes, absolutely personalized. Personally, it had.
- 40:43It had, what did it say, Virginia Tech class of 1974,
- 40:48whatever quarterback. And then on the other side, it
- 40:53said it had a like the Kangol with a, with a headset on it,
- 40:57like for a coaching thing. And it had some other things on
- 41:00it. It was awesome.
- 41:01I mean, he was decked out, dude. He had completely personalized
- 41:05either Jordans or Air Force Ones or Dunks.
- 41:10They were orange and maroon and white.
- 41:12Had who? And on the back they had BA on
- 41:15them and they were awesome. Oh, everybody was.
- 41:19He was ready. He he came.
- 41:20He came prepared. He knew the assignment.
- 41:22He knew the assignment. All righty well, boys, let's
- 41:26turn it up here. Robbie, thanks for that little
- 41:28insight. And and and in the past you've
- 41:32given us more, but I think with what has been said behind closed
- 41:35doors and everything, not as much inside as previous, but I
- 41:38think. We're we're saying that now.
- 41:42With respect to with respect to their staff and allowing us to
- 41:45come and see those things. I saw some things that, you
- 41:51know, I, I think there would be great to talk about, but they're
- 41:57going they're going to be talked about within in time.
- 42:01Got you. They're they want to, they want
- 42:04to keep things close and really teach things and let it be.
- 42:08You're going to see some stuff this week, the spring game,
- 42:11you're going to see some stuff more as camp goes on and things
- 42:15like that. It's just inevitable.
- 42:17But I think it's going to be seeing what he's done in the
- 42:22past with the Cardinals, seeing what he's done in the past at
- 42:26Wofford and kind of my thoughts of putting some of those things
- 42:29together. I think it's going to be good,
- 42:32especially with some of the things that I saw the other day.
- 42:36And it's, it's definitely going to be a, a difference in what
- 42:45you've you're used to seeing, but in, in a good way, I think.
- 42:50I think it'll be good for to have some change to, to see some
- 42:54different things and especially the way it's going to be taught
- 42:57and built and, and have a good foundation behind it.
- 43:00Yeah. I mean, this is really kind of
- 43:02the 1st wholesale defensive scheme change since Bud kind of,
- 43:09you know, changed his philosophy kind of midstream there in the
- 43:12late. 90s, yeah. We just say 92.
- 43:14Yeah. Before, what was it?
- 43:16The the guy from Rutgers got hired and basically said 92 when
- 43:20we were like, yeah, we were not 8292.
- 43:25All right, but let's flip, let's get to the spring game preview.
- 43:28Let's start talking about some of these positions.
- 43:30What we're expecting to see. Brian will be there.
- 43:32Rob, are you driving back down or are you staying home next
- 43:35Saturday this. Saturday I'll be I'll be doing
- 43:39some family things on Saturday. No worries.
- 43:42Man but I don't get this one will be televised.
- 43:45Will it not live? I think they're going to show
- 43:49highlights and clips. It's not going to be a full
- 43:53broadcast like it was last time, so.
- 43:55Brian can't get too drunk and he's got to pay attention.
- 44:00But let's talk about quarterback room.
- 44:02It's really funny on the cruise Wednesday night after we had
- 44:06both had very good nights at this new Thursday night.
- 44:08No Tuesday night what night was we sat down in the at the
- 44:11midnight breakfast or midnight buffet.
- 44:13We were eating after good nights and gambling.
- 44:15We said no, what? After midnight breakfast.
- 44:18Oh dude, they had a Baked Alaska one night for dinner.
- 44:21They did. They did.
- 44:22Take me right back to those 7 college years.
- 44:27Alaska in seven years. But The funny thing is, me and
- 44:31Brian were sitting there. Brian we're scarfing down pizza
- 44:34and hot dogs. We're we're eating terrible, but
- 44:36it was a good night. And I said, well, Brian, we we
- 44:39don't really need to talk about the quarterbacks.
- 44:41What do we need to talk about? Well, until we get back and
- 44:44literally Karen Drones is out. So now we must talk about the
- 44:48quarterbacks. And I want to ask this to both
- 44:50of y'all. Pop's going to get his chance
- 44:51with the ones get his chance in the new system.
- 44:55Do y'all think it's any possibility of a Wallypip
- 44:57situation? Brian Siegler.
- 44:59If it is, we're going to call it a Wallypop, right?
- 45:04Anyway, jokes aside, dad jokes for days, man.
- 45:07Let me keep let me keep them out of here right now.
- 45:09I don't think so. I think mainly because I don't
- 45:13think that what we're looking at is Kyra going to be out for a
- 45:17significant amount of time. If if if you talked about this
- 45:20carrying over into the fall, there's there's some question
- 45:24marks there whether that would be the situation because a lot
- 45:28of times if you start the season, you ride the hot hand,
- 45:30you can get into that situation, right.
- 45:32But I don't think this is going to carry over into the fall.
- 45:35So I don't think we're ever going to really get into that
- 45:38type of situation unless something, you know, God forbid
- 45:41goes, goes wrong with the recovery process, right?
- 45:45Yeah. So that that's really my only
- 45:47concern. But, you know, by all accounts,
- 45:50this isn't going to carry into, yeah, may not even carry in much
- 45:54into summer workouts, summer workouts, let alone, you know,
- 45:58all the way into fall camp. I kind of feel like, like we, we
- 46:03saw drones do some things when we were there.
- 46:08He participated in, in practices and stuff and we were there.
- 46:12I think more of this is they got he, he, I talked earlier about
- 46:18the luck and all of that. He had some of the worst luck of
- 46:21all of them. They were talking about some of
- 46:23the injuries and stuff he dealt with last year and all that.
- 46:26I think a lot of this is we, we, we got some good work in.
- 46:32We got you to understand the base of a lot of things that's
- 46:34going on now. We need you to maintain health,
- 46:40what you've learned and mentally get that stuff in, take care of
- 46:44your body and be ready to go when we need you in camp.
- 46:49And I think I think that's a lot had a lot to do with it.
- 46:54In my opinion, he's probably got a few things he he may still
- 47:00need to clean up or or get checked out and get cleared with
- 47:04and everything you know from last season.
- 47:09But I I think this is just a kind of a, a make.
- 47:13We do it as high school coaches. You get your older guys, you
- 47:18know, you really want to get your older guys in the beginning
- 47:24to get their knowledge, get their base, get their work in
- 47:27and then give the younger guys an opportunity to show what they
- 47:29can do to, to kind of step in and do things.
- 47:32And I think it's a very similar situation here.
- 47:35It's not taking the risks, not taking chances of him, you know,
- 47:39getting hurt. He's he's got a couple of years
- 47:41on him. You want to, you know, to
- 47:44maintain as much tread as you can.
- 47:46Yep. And see what else you got behind
- 47:48it, because you never know what what luck's going to bring.
- 47:51Like he did last year? Yeah.
- 47:54I'm I'm with a bar here. Just get him healthy.
- 47:58I think what this does, if anything, it solidifies Pop's
- 48:01role as the backup. And he showed last year he could
- 48:03be put in situations and they could have chances and games.
- 48:07And I know everybody will that and that's what you want.
- 48:10It's a. Viable option.
- 48:11Exactly, if something happens weird like he needs to literally
- 48:14sit a week like he should have at Clemson last year, you.
- 48:18You like get more work with in there and then like two young
- 48:21guys or three really that they can really they really need to
- 48:26get. Who's OK?
- 48:28Who'd you? Who do you like?
- 48:29Out of those three? Who who can?
- 48:30Who can gain the most? Because now it's basically you
- 48:34got pop pop probably going to play maybe 1/4 Saturday with the
- 48:37ones. Then it's the next three young
- 48:40guys who's got the most to gain or who do you like the most out
- 48:43of those 3? I, I I know the.
- 48:49Bias to to. There's, there's a, there's a
- 48:51good amount of bias on everyone in this, this camera shot.
- 48:55Here, But I mean physically watching him do some things
- 49:00there the other day, he looks good.
- 49:03I knew he can play. I've known his dad for years.
- 49:06Somebody AJ Brand. Everybody.
- 49:10I've watched the kid play since he was a young kid.
- 49:13I've seen him play different things, basketball, football.
- 49:17He's an athlete. And I, I definitely think it's
- 49:23a, it's a whole new process coming from high school into
- 49:26college. The fact that he's already there
- 49:30helps him. He get the system that he
- 49:34learned through high school is going to help him.
- 49:39And I think he's, you're going to see some flashes of good
- 49:43things physically. I mean, he's well built, like
- 49:48standing beside drones at different times.
- 49:50And it was, you know, you take the jersey numbers off of them,
- 49:55they put their helmets on. It's kind of hard to see a
- 49:58difference in in them for so much.
- 50:01Physically, they're very, very similar.
- 50:06Well, I feel like I feel like when we look at them like brands
- 50:09very much in the drones bowl and you know, talking about another
- 50:131 Kelvin Ryan very much looks like a a a taller, slightly
- 50:16heavier pop Watson as far as the weight.
- 50:19Good possibility, yeah. And even even the bill for kid
- 50:25moves around and does some things.
- 50:27I feel very similar to what Watson did when he first got to
- 50:31tattoo. He he is definitely not the the
- 50:37large physical specimen that that Bran and drones are.
- 50:43He he's on the smaller side. But I mean, he's a shifty.
- 50:46He's shifty quick. Don't let don't let the smaller
- 50:50fool you, because with the with the strength and conditioning
- 50:53program, it'll get him up. I mean, Oh yeah, Pop says he's
- 50:57at 205 now, and he says he's gained like 6 lbs since Ferg
- 51:02took over. So that's.
- 51:04I mean, oh, that interview. Oh, well, you he, he's thick.
- 51:10He is now he's 511. He's 205.
- 51:13He is thick. Brian, me and you have said for
- 51:16the last three years, what's the one worry about Pop?
- 51:18He ain't going to be able to just take punishment after
- 51:21punishment. I don't feel that way anymore.
- 51:22I don't feel that way anymore. Noticeably bigger from last
- 51:27year. Who's who'd you see as far as
- 51:32the throwing? Like who?
- 51:34Who was slinging it the most out of those younger guys?
- 51:43All of them got that, got good opportunities to throw balls and
- 51:46to put and to throw. But for what I can remember,
- 51:50they didn't throw anything really deep.
- 51:54They get a lot they get a lot of one-on-one type stuff and yoland
- 52:00one on ones, red zone type, one on ones, stuff like that.
- 52:04With quarterbacks, they were doing a lot of a lot of short
- 52:09yardage type stuff, you know, quick game type stuff.
- 52:14But I, I feel like all of them were pretty accurate.
- 52:20Belfort had to move a little bit more simply because he had to
- 52:24find windows to kind of throw through.
- 52:28Watson has the arm strength and the and the the mechanics to
- 52:34kind of get the ball where he needs to without having to move
- 52:38around too much where the other the other two or three kind of
- 52:43have a little bit more size that they don't have to move, but
- 52:48they can. And it's really interesting to
- 52:52see just how they break up the number of reps and things with
- 52:56this spring game to just kind of, you know, everybody's going
- 53:00to be looking at, yeah, drones isn't going to play.
- 53:04How many is Pop going to get with the ones?
- 53:08Because obviously he's going to he's your first guy to go with
- 53:10the ones And if anybody else gets any kind of reps with the
- 53:15ones, which one's it going to be of those three it's.
- 53:18Going to be interesting to see. That which one of those 3 is
- 53:21trotting out there opposite of Pop with the twos that they
- 53:27obviously see as the the next guy there.
- 53:31You know, there's always going to be some speculation and one
- 53:34may come out there with that group and then we find out later
- 53:38that they felt a lot better about the other one.
- 53:41Yeah, you just always have, I think the interesting.
- 53:44Piece. It'll tell you some things
- 53:45depending on who gets more reps where.
- 53:48I think the interesting piece if you look at all three of those
- 53:50guys that the freshman and I know Davi's been here a year,
- 53:54but if you look at their high school senior in high school,
- 53:57they all threw almost all threw at 2500 yards all threw well
- 54:01above 25 plus touchdowns all threw well below, you know, in
- 54:06well low interception numbers. So to me that has been the
- 54:11evolution of just the high school to college quarterbacks
- 54:14nowadays is years ago, if a if a guy got 10 attempts a game could
- 54:20be a good pass, but that was it because of what the offensive
- 54:23were were changed now where all these guys got over 200 plus
- 54:28attempts over 2500 yards over 25 touchdowns passes, which just
- 54:33shows you the change in the game, which is obviously why
- 54:36you've got guys who can be sophomores take over the reins
- 54:39of a college program and run it for two to three years because
- 54:42because the passing is is evolutionized.
- 54:45All right, let's flip to the big one, because this is the one
- 54:51that I think is going to hinge. I think it hinges Brent Price
- 54:54future at Virginia Tech. I see offensive line.
- 54:57Obviously Matt Moore's in and I think straight up Brian, we've
- 55:00said it Thomas remack for all discussion point.
- 55:04He's locked. He is playing somewhere on the
- 55:06offensive line. Don't know where yet, but we
- 55:09know where he's playing. Brian, they what?
- 55:13Right. Huh.
- 55:14He's 55, right? 20 transfers from.
- 55:18Yeah, West. Virginia, West Virginia 55, that
- 55:21is him 66317. All right.
- 55:24But let me ask, let me pivot to you, Brian, on this.
- 55:27Of the two other transfers, Lucas Austin, Kyle Luttner, who
- 55:31do you got? Who do you like?
- 55:33You're sitting here saying I got to see something from him
- 55:35Saturday or my confidence is going to potentially go down on
- 55:38the offensive line. Which of those two?
- 55:41Al Tuner, just because he's playing the world position, he's
- 55:44probably going to be the guy that's going to have to be 1 of
- 55:47the starters in this group, in my opinion.
- 55:51I I think, you know, you're looking at him probably at
- 55:53center and if it's not center, he's probably going to be
- 55:59playing one of the guard spots there.
- 56:00So he's the guy that you're going to need to see something
- 56:03from pretty early I think in this game to start having some
- 56:08confidence about this offensive line turning the turn to the
- 56:11table. Because I think I think we feel
- 56:14good about what what Remack can do.
- 56:18You know, whether it's right or left in the in the tackle slot
- 56:23there looks like he is going to be slotted in at one of the
- 56:24tackle spots. Whether he's on the left, it's
- 56:28either going to be him or Johnny on one side or the other.
- 56:30So I think Altooner's definitely the guy that, you know, if
- 56:35you're going to see the rest of that line kind of flesh out,
- 56:38he's the guy that needs to, you got to feel confident about him,
- 56:41especially at that center position.
- 56:44All tuners, another one from West Virginia if I remember
- 56:48correctly. He's got experience playing all
- 56:51three of the interior positions right?
- 56:53Both guards and center. Yeah.
- 56:56That, that's to me as a coach, that's huge.
- 57:01To have a guy that can play multiple positions like that, it
- 57:07is awesome. Especially as young as the, I
- 57:10mean, just a red shirt freshman. But he had some, you know, he
- 57:13saw some action, yeah, you know, last year and was was pretty
- 57:20successful in, in, in kind of limited, limited action there.
- 57:23And you're definitely a guy that I think Matt Moore thought a
- 57:26whole lot of yeah, before he got, you know, before he got
- 57:30injured last year. 100% All right, what?
- 57:33What about the current guys? Don't let's take the transfers
- 57:36out. What guys?
- 57:37Guys that they have returning that played some significant
- 57:41time all. Right, So significant time last
- 57:44year. You have the following and I'll
- 57:47pivot to Ganam, Bob Shit, Brody Meadows, Johnny Garrett are the
- 57:54four that had significant snaps. Montavious Cunningham had some
- 57:59snaps, not as many. So you have five guys with
- 58:02significant experience. What which one of those guys to
- 58:05you, Robbie, you feel like that guy's got to pop Saturday, that
- 58:09guy. I want to see something.
- 58:10So again, it starts alleviating like it's going to be like it
- 58:14was at times last year. Like Brian was talking about
- 58:18before, you've got, you've got alter, they're coming in, he's
- 58:23got it. He's got to fill one of those
- 58:24three spots. Then you've got a guy that
- 58:27played a lot in, in shit who could step into the guard spot
- 58:33that could help. I mean, he, he's got game
- 58:35experience, how fast he picks up what they're doing.
- 58:39I think, I think it could fit in there.
- 58:42I think by the end of last year they were they had Cunningham
- 58:47playing some guard stuff. He he would have now experience
- 58:53at guard and tackle which makes him a little more valuable in a
- 58:57lot of things. And then was in Meadows and.
- 59:04Garrett Garrett in Ganon, he. Was going to have to take that
- 59:08other tackle spot if we think Reback is the is one of the
- 59:12tackles. So I mean, I would, I would say
- 59:20Meadows and Garrett and and Cunningham and Schick have to
- 59:27fill in the remaining guard and tackle spot there somewhere.
- 59:32And if Altuner goes to to center, then you may be needing
- 59:362 guards there. So I mean, I think it's AI think
- 59:42it's a decent crowd to be able to kind of work with and and put
- 59:46things in. I know in in the bowl game and
- 59:51towards the end of last year was it got Nina.
- 59:55Yeah. He got a, he got a good bit of
- 59:58playing time towards the end and, and things like that.
- 1:00:01I'm, I think he's back. I mean, they've got, they've got
- 1:00:05some options there of guys that have some experience in multiple
- 1:00:09positions. Which is Brian and I both know
- 1:00:12was huge on the offensive line. You got a guy that you know can
- 1:00:15play multiple positions. It makes you feel a lot better
- 1:00:19about things. Yeah.
- 1:00:21I mean, you feel like you can offensive line, you're at some
- 1:00:25point you're going to have one or two injuries pop up
- 1:00:27throughout the year where you're going to have to lean on one or
- 1:00:30two guys. And if you got guys that can
- 1:00:32play multiple positions, you can keep your best five out there
- 1:00:36remaining without having to to shuffle too much, whether that's
- 1:00:41having a frontline guy slide from a guard to a tackle or
- 1:00:44whether that's a guy that's playing a reserve role that can
- 1:00:47plug in at guard or tackle, depending on who goes down.
- 1:00:51And really, you know, center being the the biggest wild card
- 1:00:54there because you know, you, you generally get only going to have
- 1:00:58two to three guys on your roster that you feel really comfortable
- 1:01:01with snapping the football. And so that's usually where
- 1:01:04you're going to be the tightest. Another thing to look at which
- 1:01:07you really have, we really haven't had a lot to talk about
- 1:01:10in the last couple years with offensive line is there's
- 1:01:14there's a young guy or two there that have have come in, you
- 1:01:18know, recruit wise that I I think just by seeing him by him,
- 1:01:24I would say walking by me, but kind of towering over and the
- 1:01:28clip and everything that he walked by when he walked by me.
- 1:01:32The The star kid is a large piece of human being that's.
- 1:01:38A big boy. That is a big boy.
- 1:01:40Yeah. And you know, development, I
- 1:01:46think obviously as we've seen with the guys that came over
- 1:01:50from West Virginia, they're younger players that have
- 1:01:53already developed into something that we like and that we think
- 1:01:56can play. I feel good about how more can
- 1:02:00develop younger guys that are there and and be able to recruit
- 1:02:04some guys that he can develop into into into well-rounded
- 1:02:08players for his system. So we got that too and I'm I'm
- 1:02:12excited about cause called Garnet.
- 1:02:15That boy was big, yeah. Yeah, listen, y'all mentioned
- 1:02:19all the names and who we're going to see and whatnot.
- 1:02:22What I just want to see is I want the interior to be good
- 1:02:27because I think there's been too many years.
- 1:02:29The last, it feels like the last 15 years where third and two
- 1:02:34there was a struggle to get 2 yards.
- 1:02:37I want the best interior. And if it's altooner at center,
- 1:02:42I kind of sit here and hope because you know, you see the
- 1:02:44way Brody Meadows plays, he plays all out, he goes through
- 1:02:48the whistle, he drives guys away.
- 1:02:50And I, and I'm hoping he and Cunningham can win those two
- 1:02:55spots because I feel like looking at them that they are
- 1:02:58the most physical presence on the inside.
- 1:03:01And I think that would help the short yardage that it feels like
- 1:03:04we just could not gain unless it's like Kyron drones or Logan
- 1:03:09Thomas 32 guys, just stick your head in there and just run
- 1:03:11straight ahead because that's all we got.
- 1:03:13We don't have any concept to actually block and get positive
- 1:03:17yards on short yards place. Yeah, and I'm interested to see
- 1:03:20if if Gannon takes a step this year because I mean, he started
- 1:03:23last year, was injured pretty early and didn't really get a
- 1:03:26chance to kind of really show what he could do.
- 1:03:31You know, the fact that he kind of was a new face on the line,
- 1:03:34kind of won that spot, kept kept shick off the field for a little
- 1:03:39bit there that that tells you that he's he, you know, they
- 1:03:42showed a little bit of confidence in him last year.
- 1:03:44I'm hoping that that carries over and you know, he's he gets
- 1:03:47healthy and takes some big steps this year.
- 1:03:51It's true. And look at the West Virginia
- 1:03:53kid that Matt Moore did try to get.
- 1:03:56Yeah, so I did. Try to get.
- 1:03:58I think he's a guy that would be, you know, in a in a good
- 1:04:00line there and then, you know, centre, like I've already talked
- 1:04:04about Altuner, but you know, Robbie, you brought up Neda and
- 1:04:08then we also have Tommy Ricard in there that, you know, you
- 1:04:12know, could be fighting for that spot there.
- 1:04:14So we got, you have three guys that you know, you don't
- 1:04:17necessarily feel good about. You got one guy that you you're
- 1:04:20hoping is going to be the truth and you got a couple other guys
- 1:04:23you're like, all right, if they can, they can develop a little
- 1:04:26bit. Maybe those those guys could be
- 1:04:28in the mix as well. It'll be another one of those
- 1:04:31situations just like we talked about at quarterback.
- 1:04:33It's just seeing who that first group is and how they work
- 1:04:38together and then seeing what their thought process is of who
- 1:04:42comes in next or who goes in with that second group.
- 1:04:45And just, you know, trying to piece it together and, and see
- 1:04:50do do they have a group that they they take out with the ones
- 1:04:54to protect when they know they have to and then they have a
- 1:04:58group with the twos? Or do they have a group that
- 1:05:01they go out first and then they start pulling one guy and
- 1:05:04putting another guy in to see how that group works together.
- 1:05:08Just this thought process on that will give you in my mind,
- 1:05:12will give you more of an idea of, OK, these are the guys and
- 1:05:15these are the guys he's developing and then we can use
- 1:05:18or if, hey, we're going to find the Best Buy.
- 1:05:22It might be taking this guy out, putting this guy in or moving
- 1:05:26this guy over here and putting one in here, that kind of thing.
- 1:05:29I think that's going to be a telling story of what you're
- 1:05:32seeing, too. Yeah, Robbie and you, you know,
- 1:05:34from experience, man, there's, there's the best 5 talent and
- 1:05:40then there's the best 5 as a unit.
- 1:05:42And those are two different things.
- 1:05:43Sometimes. Always.
- 1:05:44Is. Always is.
- 1:05:46All right, let's flip over. Let's go to the outside and to
- 1:05:49the other two. Two of the skill positions.
- 1:05:51Brian. Oh, no, yeah, Brian.
- 1:05:54Skill position wise, wide receiver, tight ends, who are
- 1:05:57you focused on the most? Like you're going to be sitting
- 1:05:59in lane and obviously you don't look at quarterback, but I know
- 1:06:04Brian Lee, he'll he'll watch quarterback, he'll focus line,
- 1:06:07then he'll look on the outside. So when you focusing on the
- 1:06:09outside, who you focusing on? We just talked about receiver
- 1:06:14group in general. I'm I'm looking at.
- 1:06:15Cam receiver. Tight end receiver, Yeah.
- 1:06:17I'm looking at, I'm looking at Cam Seldon.
- 1:06:18I want to see that running back in a wide receiver frame,
- 1:06:25hopefully channelling as much Jalen Lane as we can so we can
- 1:06:28keep that that train moving. But that's the that's the type
- 1:06:32of slot receiver that I like is a basically a running back that
- 1:06:38is lining up wide. The guy that has those running
- 1:06:41back instincts that when they get the ball in their hands,
- 1:06:45they have that mentality though, they're going to run by your run
- 1:06:48over here and sometimes in equal measure.
- 1:06:49How? About you Robbie, what are you
- 1:06:52focusing on with that group? Physically, from being there,
- 1:06:55from being there, watching practice and things.
- 1:06:58Physically, Selden, which it was #9.
- 1:07:03Yeah. Physically, he he has a presence
- 1:07:08it kind of thinking back a few years, I I go back to a game
- 1:07:14against South Carolina and and a gentleman who I'm sorry, Curtis,
- 1:07:20but is now a commander. Best for all parties.
- 1:07:25Devo Samuel, he kind of gives me that vibe a little bit.
- 1:07:30OK, I'm going to make a move. You bite on the move, I'm going
- 1:07:34to get yards after the catch. If you don't bite on the move
- 1:07:37and stand my ground, I'm going to get yards after the catch.
- 1:07:39You know, Do you want to take this shot or not?
- 1:07:44That's up to you. I feel like watching him
- 1:07:47physically, that's the kind of player he's going to be, which
- 1:07:50I'm in love with. He he he's definitely one to see
- 1:07:58after the after the bowl game and then watching him run at
- 1:08:03things at practice the other day.
- 1:08:06Aiden Green, if he if he gets space and gets he can break out.
- 1:08:13There ain't many of them catching him, bud.
- 1:08:16It's not a lot. I'm gonna flip it.
- 1:08:18Before that, boys quit. He is.
- 1:08:21I'm going to flip it on y'all the where I'm most interested.
- 1:08:23I'm going to be focused on with the highlights and probably talk
- 1:08:26to Brian about it. I want to see what they do with
- 1:08:28the Titans, especially Benji Gosnell.
- 1:08:30Benji Gosnell was the second leader and receiver on this team
- 1:08:34last year. If you look at Philip
- 1:08:35Montgomery's history, the most I saw was with Baylor and the
- 1:08:40Robert Griffin back when he won the Heisman.
- 1:08:43They had a guy 20 and I got 15. That's not a lot.
- 1:08:48Now today, Brent Davis comes out and says they're really focused
- 1:08:51on being physical, get the blocking concepts down.
- 1:08:54That's what I'm paying attention to.
- 1:08:56Because you go back to what they recruited at Baylor.
- 1:09:01They never had that. They never had someone like
- 1:09:03Benji who could catch the ball. Who did ask him physicality
- 1:09:07does. He shifted in a way where it
- 1:09:09says, well, I've got one of these guys now, does he shift it
- 1:09:12and say I want him to block? Good.
- 1:09:15But I've got Nell, an extra potential weapon on the in line
- 1:09:18because we know Benji can go in line.
- 1:09:19He can go, you know he not I'm not going to say he's going to
- 1:09:23be in the backfield any, but he can do a variety of things.
- 1:09:26He'll be in the. Backfield some.
- 1:09:27He can be, but he will. That's OK.
- 1:09:32Write it down for Brian Siegler I.
- 1:09:35My thought is I think Gosnell is a could be a very integral part
- 1:09:42in what they try to do with some with the run game and not as a
- 1:09:47not as a back carrying things. He had some experience before
- 1:09:52and in that H back type role that what we call what we call
- 1:10:00what some people call a yo technique that offset tight end,
- 1:10:06you know inside between the guard and tackle sniffer.
- 1:10:10You know your kick out blocker, your your split zone player.
- 1:10:14Split zone? Yep.
- 1:10:15That's he has experience doing that.
- 1:10:17The coach that he played for his senior year in high school
- 1:10:21before he hurt his knee, he played some stuff like that.
- 1:10:25He knows that position. It's about him buying in to,
- 1:10:29hey, understanding you can be exceptional for us by maybe
- 1:10:35catching 15 balls and certain things and being this monster
- 1:10:40that we have doing this kick out, running this power, doing
- 1:10:44these things and may not be the, you know, 40 or 50 catch,
- 1:10:50Gronkowski, Kelsey type of thing.
- 1:10:52We know he can do that. We know he can be that guy, but
- 1:10:57will he buy into? Maybe I can do that later?
- 1:11:01As long as I can show I can do this, it makes myself even more
- 1:11:04versatile going out. Yeah, and he's shown that what
- 1:11:07he can do. So I mean, I think if, if he can
- 1:11:11develop his tool kit where he can show he's, he's both, he's
- 1:11:15like, he's that true well-rounded tight end that you
- 1:11:18can count on to block in the running game, but you can also
- 1:11:21line up in the slot and have a mismatch and be able to take
- 1:11:25advantage of that. Absolutely.
- 1:11:26As a coach, when you see a kid out there working his butt off,
- 1:11:30doing the things you asked him to do and he's balled into doing
- 1:11:33the things that we've asked him to make this team better.
- 1:11:36A coach starts to get to, you know what I need, I need to, I
- 1:11:40need to give him something for the work that he's done.
- 1:11:44And maybe that's where it goes from 15 or 20 catches to 30,
- 1:11:48because he's shown his willingness to do everything
- 1:11:51else the right way. Like Bruce Arias talked about,
- 1:11:55you have to reward the people that are doing things the right
- 1:11:58way. You have to show them that you
- 1:12:00care about that stuff. Got you.
- 1:12:02How? He earns some of that stuff.
- 1:12:05Let me ask both you all this, because the one thing is with
- 1:12:08the Montgomery and Bryant and y'all, we talked about it
- 1:12:10earlier about, you know, the concepts and what you're going
- 1:12:14to see. And people have been searching
- 1:12:16Montgomery's offenses all the time.
- 1:12:18Do you pay attention to route concepts at a game like this or
- 1:12:21is it it's it's too vanilla. They're going to be doing a lot
- 1:12:23of basic stuff Or is it pay attention So you know, you see
- 1:12:28who's running because the one thing he likes to run flats, he
- 1:12:32likes to run drags, he likes to run stuff.
- 1:12:34Who's running those routes? Is it worth paying attention to?
- 1:12:37Or is it? Don't.
- 1:12:39Don't buy too much into it. Personally, I would say you look
- 1:12:43at the routes more than. The players running the routes
- 1:12:48got you. And the fact that you're going
- 1:12:51to the the game, you simplify the game to the point where you
- 1:12:58have a route tree. There's certain routes that
- 1:13:00every team's going to run. They're going to run the
- 1:13:03verticals, they're going to run the slants, they're going to run
- 1:13:05the post or they're going to run, you know, the digs, the
- 1:13:08ends, the outs, those kind of, it's in every route tree, no
- 1:13:12matter whether you go from from peewee football to the NFL.
- 1:13:18And it's how they, it's how they use those things in spacing and,
- 1:13:22and what they're doing with certain things, in my opinion,
- 1:13:26yeah. It's, it's, it's it really in
- 1:13:28looking at it at a in a micro level, what are the combinations
- 1:13:33of the routes, not necessarily what's in the tree.
- 1:13:37And I mean, looking at that, like, I think, I think also you
- 1:13:40can look at and pay attention to maybe what you don't see.
- 1:13:44And I know Robbie, we talked about this a little bit too,
- 1:13:47like I don't think we're going to see as much behind the line
- 1:13:50of scrimmage stuff. So I think that's something to
- 1:13:52look, look for and pay attention and and make sure that you don't
- 1:13:54see that because I don't think you're going to see as much of
- 1:13:57that in this offense as we saw an entire Tyler Bowen offense.
- 1:14:01This style of offense plays into, you know it all.
- 1:14:06It's always going to have a check down.
- 1:14:07There's going to be closer to the line of scrimmage.
- 1:14:09Yeah, you're going to have some screen game stuff, but it's it's
- 1:14:15not going to be I don't feel like you're going to personal
- 1:14:19opinion, knowing the off the offense as it is, you're not
- 1:14:23going to see as many of the pop screens to the single receiver
- 1:14:29and saying, hey, you got a one-on-one match up, beat him,
- 1:14:34you know, on the move and get four or five yards.
- 1:14:39I feel like this offense pushes more to get to four or five
- 1:14:43yards and catch the ball and then see what you can get
- 1:14:46afterwards. I think that's the basis of this
- 1:14:50offense more. It is for us.
- 1:14:54Our style offense is very similar to what Montgomery runs
- 1:14:58or has run in the past and I feel like we throw a lot of what
- 1:15:04we look at as quick game. We want to get routes in the
- 1:15:09five to seven yard range and then everything you get after
- 1:15:13that as a plus, but we're going to get that you're.
- 1:15:17Going to get you're setting yourself up for success if you
- 1:15:20get 5 and it's second and five that you can do anything on the
- 1:15:22field you want and it's still not a if.
- 1:15:27If if you don't hit on 2nd down, thirds is still not that far
- 1:15:31away. Let's go to run.
- 1:15:33Oh, let me say something real quick.
- 1:15:34We talked about Benji's catch numbers with Bowen compared to
- 1:15:40what we might see with Montgomery.
- 1:15:42I, I will say this, you know, a lot of the catches that Benji
- 1:15:47Benji flagged last year and, and, and just any tight end in,
- 1:15:51in, in that Tyler Bowen system, So many of those were those
- 1:15:55behind the line of scrimmage catches, those at the line of
- 1:15:58scrimmage catches. I, I think when you do have the
- 1:16:02tight end involved in the passing game, they're going to
- 1:16:04be more effective routes for, for the tight end, meaning that
- 1:16:12it's not going to be having to rely on motion to kind of get
- 1:16:17some, some separation, those quick catches and having to let
- 1:16:20them turn up and, and hopefully break a tackle to kind of get
- 1:16:23some action in the passing game. It's going to be a little bit
- 1:16:25more deliberate with how they use them in the passing game.
- 1:16:30Gotcha, gotcha. All right, go to running
- 1:16:33backroom. Stewart's not here.
- 1:16:35We've been told guys are banged up.
- 1:16:39I mean, PJ Prelude not playing Coney was hurt.
- 1:16:45Tyler Mason Overton's hurt. I mean, do we just take just
- 1:16:50grain of salt with that room? I.
- 1:16:53Feel like it's going to be interesting to see and, and I
- 1:16:58would tell you to watch this group of running backs that's
- 1:17:02going to get an opportunity to play OK 'cause they've got
- 1:17:05something. Because in my opinion, you lost
- 1:17:12the running back Room 0. Got you.
- 1:17:16Oh yeah. When you lose Tooting and you
- 1:17:19lose Thomas, you had you had other guys that filled in, but
- 1:17:24each one of them filled in in their own way.
- 1:17:27Tony Prelude Mason, who played more in the bowl game then then
- 1:17:34I really expected to see. But then you add the Stewart.
- 1:17:43Can you add the Hawkins kid from was it in Oklahoma?
- 1:17:48Somewhere out in Oklahoma. He's from Oklahoma, I think it's
- 1:17:52Missouri. Some D2IN.
- 1:17:53Missouri, yeah. Look, he was, he impressed me a
- 1:17:57little bit at practice the the path level and the way he runs
- 1:18:02the ball like he's a physical, like he runs like he hates the
- 1:18:08ground he's running on. Like, I mean, he, he won hard
- 1:18:13and physical. And I think that's interesting
- 1:18:16to see. Mason showed us that he can do
- 1:18:21some things in that spring game. I mean, in that bowl game coming
- 1:18:26into the spring game, he he looks to be bigger, he looks to
- 1:18:30be more physical. And it'll be interesting to to
- 1:18:35think about how when Tooting went out last year, it was
- 1:18:41Malachi Thomas. And then we got to hope some
- 1:18:45other guys can can take a couple carries and help us to now it
- 1:18:50seems almost like I feel like there's there could be 5 or 6 at
- 1:18:55some point that you could say, hey, we can put in and give 5 or
- 1:19:0010 carriers to and be good. So we we could be going from the
- 1:19:04lead back to having a running back back committee.
- 1:19:07Yes and yeah, I, I think. You're still going to see when
- 1:19:12when he gets here, Stewart kind of being the lead back, but that
- 1:19:16I think there's going to be there's going to be that 2A2B2,
- 1:19:22probably 2C behind him. I think you got AI think you got
- 1:19:25a crowd there. They're going to, they're going
- 1:19:28to have a little bit to say about, hey, if he thinks he's
- 1:19:33going to come in and beat the lead back, we want a little
- 1:19:36input on this thing on. There we go.
- 1:19:39And they're going to show it. That's going to make him better
- 1:19:41too. That's going to make the whole
- 1:19:42team better, so. 100% I'm, I'm, I'm, I feel good about that.
- 1:19:47If there, there are a lot of question marks of just how
- 1:19:50that's going to work, but I'm optimistic with with what I've
- 1:19:55seen and what's there. All right, all right, let's flip
- 1:20:00over. Let's talk a little bit on the
- 1:20:01defense and let's obviously start with the safety room.
- 1:20:06I mean, it's it feels loaded between the guys who were here
- 1:20:10last year, the transfers that came in understanding see if the
- 1:20:13system being 3 high. But is there anybody, Brian will
- 1:20:18start with you, Is there anybody to you that has to pass your eye
- 1:20:22test on Saturday? Anybody that's got to pass the
- 1:20:27eye test? I'm interested to see what Tyson
- 1:20:33Flowers looks like. OK.
- 1:20:38Because he, I think he's the guy that was the most inconsistent
- 1:20:43in the tape that I looked at. But when he looked good, he
- 1:20:47looked real good. But he was very inconsistent.
- 1:20:50If, if he's a guy that can come in and show that, you know, he's
- 1:20:54probably leveled some of that out a little bit.
- 1:20:57I think that'll go a long way just because we got we got a
- 1:21:00handful of guys, you know, between Cash coming in, you got
- 1:21:03obviously Reddish kind of being the, as weird as it sounds,
- 1:21:08elder statesman in the room from an experience standpoint it
- 1:21:12yeah, with this team, with this team, yeah.
- 1:21:17It's it's going to be interesting to see how these new
- 1:21:19guys work in there. But Tyson flowers to me just
- 1:21:22because I saw some inconsistencies and if he can
- 1:21:25iron some of that out, that would that would be huge for
- 1:21:27this room. I think Isaiah Cash is going to
- 1:21:30be a player. How much and how we deploy him
- 1:21:35is going to be what I want to see just within see because it's
- 1:21:39overall system. And I keep I keep looking back
- 1:21:44at my my roster card thing, man you.
- 1:21:46Need to give us that. No, tell me on.
- 1:21:49Saturdays I look at, I try to figure out the number because
- 1:21:52for me out there I was seeing numbers and numbers were the
- 1:21:56what what clicked to me. So I'm trying to figure out
- 1:21:57who's who. But while you figure I'm going
- 1:22:05to tell you, for me, I want to see how Quinn Reddish does in
- 1:22:07the system. He showed so much as a true
- 1:22:10freshman last year, putting into a role being put in when when
- 1:22:15Lil Strowman got hurt, he was forced to play.
- 1:22:18He was not supposed to play last year and he looked good at
- 1:22:21times. He laid licks.
- 1:22:23I want to see how a system that is designed to be to to make
- 1:22:29safeties the stars, because to me that's what it does, right?
- 1:22:32We keep saying Buddha Baker, we keep seeing other things where
- 1:22:36it's like the safeties are really high level of this.
- 1:22:40How can a kid who played like that now get put into a system?
- 1:22:43Where is he lining up? Because we know it could be 3
- 1:22:47highs. He is he still playing a strong?
- 1:22:49Is there another position that, you know, I would say like a
- 1:22:52Rover, but a lot of people said a Rover strong.
- 1:22:54But to me Rover was always that movable piece in the chess game,
- 1:22:58right? It can kind of go anywhere and
- 1:23:00do different things. Is he playing that or is he back
- 1:23:02at free? That's what I'm interested in.
- 1:23:04What about you? Rob I mean, it'll be like, I
- 1:23:11know with their system and I, I, I play a system that's somewhat
- 1:23:15similar to this. We run more of a AA3334 kind of
- 1:23:23hybrid. Look, there's times where we can
- 1:23:26look like we have 3 safeties. There's time.
- 1:23:30And technically the, the, that 3334 hybrid system is considered
- 1:23:38one of the the three safety defenses.
- 1:23:42There's a lot of times that I line up on the field and you
- 1:23:46have to know what you're looking at to see 3 safeties.
- 1:23:50I mean, that's just the way we do it.
- 1:23:52And my thought with kind of looking at the way they have
- 1:23:56things laid out where you have safeties, you have nickels, you
- 1:24:00have edges, you have, you know, outside linebacker, those kinds
- 1:24:05of the way they've kind of named things.
- 1:24:08I feel like you're going to see something very similar to what
- 1:24:10I'm thinking that we do and that sometimes, OK, you may see 3
- 1:24:16safeties or you may see two safeties and a nickel.
- 1:24:21But is he going to be is that Nicola linebacker?
- 1:24:25Is that Nicola safety? Is that Nicola extra corner?
- 1:24:28Is it, you know, that's a that's kind of an NFL type deal.
- 1:24:35And knowing that he comes from an NFL background last year, I I
- 1:24:42feel like that kind of thing is a possibility.
- 1:24:47So that will be saying that these guys are safeties.
- 1:24:52It's possible to see one of them at the time.
- 1:24:54I think it could be possible to see three of them.
- 1:24:58It just, it's going to be, it goes back to that.
- 1:25:02How does your personnel match up against things that you're going
- 1:25:06to see? And it might be fluid week to
- 1:25:08week, depending on what it is. But the I I definitely feel good
- 1:25:14about the the safety group that's there with with Reddish
- 1:25:19and cash, I feel like was. You said you saw Ellis out there
- 1:25:28some too, right #4 Ellis? What about Sherrod Koval?
- 1:25:37Did you see a lot of Sherrod out there?
- 1:25:39Tyson Flowers, 17. What about 7?
- 1:25:43Did you see Koval who came from Clemson?
- 1:25:47I did not see him, but that's that's not to say that he wasn't
- 1:25:53there. I just I didn't for some reason
- 1:25:57something didn't focus in on that.
- 1:26:03I feel like, OK, I, I was going to say I remember seeing #3
- 1:26:10which is Caleb Spencer, but he was a safety before, am I right?
- 1:26:17Safety before, linebacker now. Yeah, he's playing Star a lot
- 1:26:21last year. Yeah, played outside a lot last
- 1:26:23year, so hold your thoughts. On him and that, that's the
- 1:26:26thing, like with the way I run, with the way we run things, I
- 1:26:30know you're going to, you could get some confusion to say, hey,
- 1:26:34that kids played safety. He could, he should, he's
- 1:26:37safety, but they say he's a linebacker.
- 1:26:40Some things are going to, I think some things are going to
- 1:26:44kind of mix in there. So it's hard to say, but got you
- 1:26:48the the Johnson kids still there too, right Springs?
- 1:26:54Yep, he's still there as well, just a sophomore, just a
- 1:26:57sophomore. All right, I'm going to flip it
- 1:27:00to the defensive side of the room with your doppelganger over
- 1:27:02there and JC Price ton of production loss.
- 1:27:07I know you always talk to him but but but this room lost a ton
- 1:27:14of production inside and out. You know, APR likely going to be
- 1:27:21first four round pick people's picking up steam to maybe get to
- 1:27:24the fourth round. What concerns can't remember who
- 1:27:29had pitched to first last time pitched to Robbie this time.
- 1:27:32What concerns you more inside or outside or because it's
- 1:27:35changing? It doesn't.
- 1:27:38We don't know yet. I think that position has the
- 1:27:47biggest question marks to me, just because I don't know what
- 1:27:54their plan is. I think they have guys there
- 1:27:59that can be very successful in many different ways.
- 1:28:03OK, Laws and Copeland and Priester Burgos, you know, to
- 1:28:15us, those guys are the are the defensive line group that we're
- 1:28:19used to. But this system could be a
- 1:28:23little different in how they they interchange some of those
- 1:28:26guys. And that's going to be cool to
- 1:28:28see kind of how they move things around.
- 1:28:31Would they ask them to do, you know, as, as a guy that runs a
- 1:28:39lot of a lot of three man front on the defensive front, you
- 1:28:44always have to go to the question of are we asking these
- 1:28:47guys to to gap or we asking these guys to play a gap and the
- 1:28:53linebacker feel, you know, behind it, things like that.
- 1:28:57So being able to see how they position guys up front, whether
- 1:29:03it's Gilliam or Laws or or Copeland or Burgos and, and all
- 1:29:10of those different pieces, how they kind of move things around
- 1:29:14and what they what they ask those guys to do.
- 1:29:19I think once they get that set and we'll, we may see a lot more
- 1:29:23of that just from the spring game Saturday of what more of
- 1:29:27their plan is, I'd feel more comfortable in saying, OK, now I
- 1:29:31feel good about this group of guys, but it's just, I know
- 1:29:36there's dudes there. It's just what are they asking
- 1:29:40them to do? And I have 100% faith in the
- 1:29:44fact that whatever they ask them to do, the JC Price is going to
- 1:29:47get the best out of them that he can get and that they're going
- 1:29:50to produce. So that that's kind of where I
- 1:29:54stand with that. We can name all the guys off all
- 1:29:57day. What are they going to ask them
- 1:30:00to do and how are they going to going to step into those roles?
- 1:30:04I think is the biggest thing. Brian.
- 1:30:08Yeah, I kind of have a similar, similar take on this.
- 1:30:11I feel like between what we did in the portal, what we kind of
- 1:30:15already had coming back, I feel good about the guys we have.
- 1:30:21I'm interested to see how they're going to be deployed and
- 1:30:24what they're going to be asked to do and if those things are
- 1:30:27going to meld with their skill set.
- 1:30:31And I mean, it sounds like Cephus's whole whole deal is
- 1:30:35deploying the the personnel that he has in the best way possible
- 1:30:40to get the most out of them. So I'm confident from that
- 1:30:43standpoint at least, you know, from what I've heard so far.
- 1:30:47But you know, anytime you're shifting philosophies on
- 1:30:52defense, there's always going to be a little bit of growing pain
- 1:30:56there. And to Robbie's point, I think
- 1:30:58figuring out where the guys fit within what Cepkus wants to do,
- 1:31:03Cepkus kind of getting an understanding of what these guys
- 1:31:06do best and how he can best deploy them, that that's going
- 1:31:10to be the, the, the big thing. Because, you know, to Robbie's
- 1:31:13point, I think I think JC is going to get these guys, he's
- 1:31:16going to get these guys where they need to be.
- 1:31:19I think they just need to figure out, you know, who fits best
- 1:31:23where and what the best rotation is going to be in terms of guys
- 1:31:27getting matched with first line, second line, things like that.
- 1:31:31Because I think there's going to be, you know, obviously
- 1:31:33throughout a game, you're going to have a guy or two kind of
- 1:31:35rotate in or out. But it it's really good if you
- 1:31:37can kind of have that first line that works the best together and
- 1:31:41kind of that second line that are very complementary from a
- 1:31:44skill set standpoint as much as you can looking at the front.
- 1:31:48And, and I tell you today I listen to the Jonquim interview.
- 1:31:52By the way, if y'all have not seen that interview, go go
- 1:31:56listen to it a we're going to try everything we've.
- 1:31:59Yeah, we got to get him on here. Holy shit, that kids
- 1:32:04charismatic, well spoken kid that feels like he talked about
- 1:32:08anything but how he talked about going to the defensive room and
- 1:32:11how he he praised JC. He's like Coach Price telling me
- 1:32:15exactly what to do, how to do it.
- 1:32:17And then I do it and and it and it's so easy.
- 1:32:20To Brodie's point, I think JC is going to get the room right.
- 1:32:24It's just finding the right combos, what works right.
- 1:32:26Because you know, we talk, you know the thing about C because
- 1:32:29it's the alignment. We've seen him do everything in
- 1:32:32different places. We saw the videos, 2 DTS that
- 1:32:35look like a one tech, a three tech, 2 guys standing up at the
- 1:32:38ends. Are we going to see more than
- 1:32:41that Saturday? Are we going to see 3 lines?
- 1:32:43Are we going to see one down lineman, you know, over at a 0
- 1:32:47technique somewhere at a four? Like I'm interested to see that
- 1:32:51Saturday because I want to see it where he's leveraging guys
- 1:32:57like Jerrod Johnson, who's, you know, 63280 and like hand Chuck
- 1:33:02to play the four eye techniques. And then he's putting ends on
- 1:33:05the outside of their shoulders to say, OK, how are you going to
- 1:33:07defend this? These guys are quick twitch guys
- 1:33:10that are going to get inside your guards, but I'm going to be
- 1:33:12sending 2 edges to. What are you going to do about
- 1:33:16it? I think a lot of that comes from
- 1:33:18his experience with NFL guys. I think there's going to be
- 1:33:21packages of certain things depending on what you know, he's
- 1:33:25he's going to scheme up some things.
- 1:33:27OK, this offense wants to do this and take advantage of this.
- 1:33:31But we can take advantage of what they're trying to do right
- 1:33:34here. You know, you may see smaller
- 1:33:38groups of D lineman to really put rush press on from like a A3
- 1:33:44technique inside rather than it all being edge pressure.
- 1:33:48You know, you may have God laws and Priester and and and Gilliam
- 1:33:57in together up front, just filling holes there.
- 1:34:02There's so many options with the the groups of people that they
- 1:34:05have and just right there talking about jungle being in
- 1:34:10the room with JC Price and all that.
- 1:34:12If I'm not mistaken, didn't he he come from he's transfer in?
- 1:34:17Wasn't he an inside backer? Inside linebacker.
- 1:34:20Inside. Linebacker.
- 1:34:21Yeah, and we're, we're here talking about him being in the
- 1:34:24room with JC Price. Oh, I mean.
- 1:34:29It's going to be interesting to see how they deploy these guys
- 1:34:31because I mean, you got so many different, different
- 1:34:35opportunities that that you can, you can do and you know, talk
- 1:34:39about from a front standpoint of being multiple.
- 1:34:41I'm just I'm interested if we how many non nickel package
- 1:34:46fronts we see in the spring game or whether it's going to be, if
- 1:34:50it's not nickel, it's going to be a just a base kind of kind of
- 1:34:53245 look, you know, which is what we expect I think at this
- 1:34:57point. Yeah.
- 1:34:58At this point, you're. Right.
- 1:34:59I know for us when we go to our nickel packages more for us when
- 1:35:06you go to a nickel package, the the stand up outside backer or
- 1:35:12whatever, Yep, kind of becomes tag kind of attached to our
- 1:35:18three front line. So it almost makes it a four
- 1:35:21front line. But I mean, what is that
- 1:35:25something they will do with the nickel or does an inside backer
- 1:35:28come out for them as a nickel and do they play the nickel as a
- 1:35:34as that third safety in the three safety type system or is
- 1:35:38he another corner? You know, it just it all depends
- 1:35:42on I think a lot of this all depend on match up stuff and
- 1:35:47what he decides, you know, where he wants to pull things from and
- 1:35:51it's that it's back to that prostyle of the of deal there,
- 1:35:56you know, got you. Well, you talked about backers
- 1:35:59there. Obviously.
- 1:36:00I think everybody feels really good about Caleb Woodson, how
- 1:36:04his development last year, how he came on, how good he played
- 1:36:07at the end of the season. So you feel like he's going to
- 1:36:09be on the field at all time. He may never come off the field.
- 1:36:12He may never come off the field. The honest God truth.
- 1:36:15But you know that the other pieces, that room, we all felt
- 1:36:18good. We saw some development with
- 1:36:20Gabe Williams. He has that injury, all the
- 1:36:22unfortunate stuff that happened after that.
- 1:36:25And then they moved Caleb Spencer over and we still got
- 1:36:27Keller there. Is this the Keller breakout year
- 1:36:30where he. Finally, don't say it, Curtis.
- 1:36:33Blasphemy. Well, I mean, I mean, he did
- 1:36:37lead the team in tackles last year, believe it or not.
- 1:36:41He led the team in tackles with 83.
- 1:36:45It's, it's going to be one of those things that's kind of like
- 1:36:52you said, it, it gets kind of, it gets kind of fluid in that
- 1:36:57situation too. We we all feel like Caleb
- 1:37:00Woodson is going to be on the field.
- 1:37:01All the time. It doesn't matter.
- 1:37:03He's stepped up, he's proven that that he could play in there
- 1:37:08and do that. But we know he's got the
- 1:37:10athletic ability and, and everything to to help coverage
- 1:37:14wise. He's a good interior backer, but
- 1:37:18we know he's good in coverage because he's played in a
- 1:37:21coverage position in the past. That to me, that's a hell of a
- 1:37:26feeling because there's a when I've coached linebackers, one of
- 1:37:30the worst feelings in the world is looking at my linebackers and
- 1:37:32go, God damn, I hope the, I hope the secondary can cover
- 1:37:37everything because I don't have a linebacker that's going to
- 1:37:39cover anything. Once once he figured out how to
- 1:37:42cover that split zone RPO, he started looking good.
- 1:37:46He got he got burned a bunch of times in one game on that, but
- 1:37:49once he figured that out, couldn't do it anymore.
- 1:37:53I mean, I I've had here here in North Wilkesboro, I've had
- 1:37:56inside linebacker that I could count on making 8090 a hundred
- 1:38:00tackles a year. But if I had if, if the running
- 1:38:06back around the damn wheel out the backfield, that bitch was
- 1:38:09going to be wide open. Good.
- 1:38:12Night. I mean, I love the kid to death.
- 1:38:16He won't he tell you right now I can say, hey, what are we going?
- 1:38:22What are we going to do if they hand the ball?
- 1:38:24Oh, we're going to tackle the coach.
- 1:38:25What happens if he runs that wheel?
- 1:38:27He's probably going to score. Coach, here we go.
- 1:38:30Let me ask this, Robbie, did you see much of Cameron Fleming out
- 1:38:33there in the in the practice that you observed?
- 1:38:37Give me a number. 9 number 99. 9 I do not recall seeing a lot of
- 1:38:48him, but I can't I, I'm not going to say that he wasn't
- 1:38:52there because of other things that I was probably looking at.
- 1:38:56Yeah, I wanted to, I personally wanted to see Clatterball out
- 1:39:03there to see what he could do and, and where he, you know,
- 1:39:07where he's fascinated with, with that kind of with that
- 1:39:12linebacker style with that kid. And it, it goes back to the
- 1:39:16thing I talked about it, whether he can be a big, tough physical
- 1:39:20inside backer and still cover and play out and things like
- 1:39:23that. So I get more focused on things
- 1:39:27like that because I know those are the players that I have.
- 1:39:30Yeah. And so I do remember seeing a
- 1:39:34lot of of Caleb Spencer, as we discussed, he he's in that
- 1:39:42linebacker position now more than it is a safety, but he's
- 1:39:46another one like Woodson. We know they can play.
- 1:39:48Cover style you can play cover style you can let you you can
- 1:39:52deploy him for certain things and he gained some and he got
- 1:39:54some weight gain too up in the mid to 20s now where you feel a
- 1:39:58little bit more confident about run support she.
- 1:40:01Said you saw some some George balance out there too, right?
- 1:40:04Oh, George #41. It's we did see some balance out
- 1:40:07there #41. Nice, nice shout out George
- 1:40:12Balon. I did see, I did see him some.
- 1:40:16And so that'll be again, as you said, we know Woodson's going to
- 1:40:22be there. How it unfolds around after that
- 1:40:25is what's in the guy that they say, hey, he can do this.
- 1:40:28And then we can, we can run some nickels and some stars and some
- 1:40:33other different things that we want to see and, and how the the
- 1:40:37the wheel mixes in and all of those things, just how they set
- 1:40:41things up. You know, as I've said with the
- 1:40:45mind we run that 33, if you look at it a lot of times against
- 1:40:53some spread teams that are wider.
- 1:40:56I'll my defense almost looks like a three one.
- 1:40:59Yeah, I mean, because I've got I've got guys over top,
- 1:41:05especially if they go in an empty set.
- 1:41:07You know, I've got safeties over top on both sides.
- 1:41:10I've got outside backers kind of split out.
- 1:41:12They're really inside backers. They're not the outside backers
- 1:41:15because I've got the safeties helping over and things like
- 1:41:18that. And I mean, that is a very
- 1:41:22prostyle look for teams that are, I mean, so it'll be
- 1:41:28interesting to see how that unfolds and, and who they try to
- 1:41:30use in those places. For alignment there, are you
- 1:41:33kind of splitting the difference between the tackle and the slot?
- 1:41:35Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:41:38So if we're going to play more than 3/4, look, then those guys
- 1:41:43are going to be more edge players and and it'll look like
- 1:41:47a help for me. Most of the time it looks like a
- 1:41:495/2 like that. That's because I'm playing teams
- 1:41:53that are running wing T triple option, that kind of stuff.
- 1:41:59So I mean, I, I change, I move a lot of things around based on on
- 1:42:05what I'm going to get coming at me.
- 1:42:09And I feel like Seek just kind of looks at things that way too,
- 1:42:14being AD 3 coach and, you know, working his way up through
- 1:42:20things. I, I think he kind of takes some
- 1:42:23of that same mindset that I do is, is finding those matchups
- 1:42:27matching schemes that to take advantage of weaknesses from the
- 1:42:32offense. Yeah, got you.
- 1:42:35All right, let's get one last room, the cornerback room.
- 1:42:38I mean, we're outside of Dante Lovett and IBM Isaiah Brown
- 1:42:42Murray, who's going to probably play a lot of nickel on the
- 1:42:45inside. He you'd said that aloud down
- 1:42:47his interview, a lot of an experience.
- 1:42:52I mean, some some young guys got to step up right.
- 1:42:56And and even if somebody steps up, do y'all think we still got
- 1:43:02a portal shop for one more or is it or do you hope either
- 1:43:07knowledge JoJo or Deloach step up where it's like, Hey, they
- 1:43:11can play? Yeah, I mean, I feel like we're
- 1:43:14going to be leaning pretty heavy on, you know, outside of Lovett
- 1:43:17the, the, the, the 2 Williams, you know, Christian and and
- 1:43:23Thomas Williams there, I feel like they're going to be the
- 1:43:25guys that are going to kind of step in there as well.
- 1:43:30It's it's one of those positions where last year you kind of it
- 1:43:35was an afterthought a little bit.
- 1:43:37He didn't really worry about it. And I feel like this year it's
- 1:43:39going to be, I think this the scheme is going to take a little
- 1:43:43bit off of what they have to do relative to what they had to do
- 1:43:50in that in that system last year.
- 1:43:53But at the same time, you still going to meet guys that can go
- 1:43:56out there and match up man to man and cover.
- 1:43:59And you're always going to need that to some degree.
- 1:44:02So it's going to be interesting to see how these guys, you know,
- 1:44:04most of them red shirt sophomores or younger kind of
- 1:44:08step in there. So yeah, to your point, Curtis,
- 1:44:12you wouldn't, it wouldn't hurt to go out and grab a guy if you
- 1:44:15found a guy that has some, some experience that you feel like
- 1:44:18could at least be in that, you know, top two, top three in the
- 1:44:23rotation. About you, Robbie.
- 1:44:27Yeah, there's another reddish in the cornerback room, right?
- 1:44:32That's that's that Big Brother who is coming from Winthrop, so
- 1:44:38coming from FCS. Wingate.
- 1:44:41Wingate, Wingate Wingate still FCS, right?
- 1:44:46Yeah, local team. Yeah, and he had a good season
- 1:44:49last year. Don't.
- 1:44:50I mean they have 4 picks, 11 pass break UPS.
- 1:44:54Wingate. Wingate has been a a pretty good
- 1:44:57football program here over the last several years.
- 1:45:00So I mean. That's Charlotte area, right?
- 1:45:04Yeah, from Charlotte area, we we know there we know there's some
- 1:45:12there's some talent in the in the in the bloodstream there it.
- 1:45:15Is. From.
- 1:45:17From. So I mean, there I, I don't like
- 1:45:22you said, outside of Lovett, I feel like there were multiple
- 1:45:27people that rotated different things and, and did things and
- 1:45:32they're going to try to find what fits them best.
- 1:45:39I've, I've known, I've known coach Cheetah now for, for
- 1:45:42numerous years after he was a Duke when I was in Eastern North
- 1:45:45Carolina through some things like that.
- 1:45:49And he's going to have, he's going to have those guys
- 1:45:52prepared and, and he's going to get the best out of what he can
- 1:45:56get. So I mean, I, I think they're
- 1:45:59going to be well prepared. It's just a matter of who's
- 1:46:02going to step up and take the reins of, of what they need.
- 1:46:06Who's going to step in and be the guy and say, hey, you know
- 1:46:09what, this position is open and and I'm going to take it.
- 1:46:14The Joshua Clark, I know, I guess we talked about that
- 1:46:24beforehand. I guess he got hurt recently.
- 1:46:29Yeah, we don't, we don't. We don't know exactly what the
- 1:46:31extent of that is, but yeah, the word is he got banged up so.
- 1:46:35I think he, I think he he played a lot in the bowl game and did
- 1:46:39some good things right. Yeah, yeah, he looked, he looked
- 1:46:43good in the bowl game. I know he got there was a couple
- 1:46:45he got burned on when he was actually in really good
- 1:46:47position. You sometimes you just get beat
- 1:46:49like sometimes the ball's thrown, thrown where it needs to
- 1:46:53be. I like, I like the physicality
- 1:46:56he brought, he brought, he brought that kind of that that
- 1:46:59physical mindset to the cornerback possession.
- 1:47:02Robbie, let me ask you this real quick.
- 1:47:05When looking at the cornerback, what, what sort of
- 1:47:08responsibilities are they going to have within the scheme of the
- 1:47:11defense relative to kind of what we've been seeing historically
- 1:47:15here at Virginia Tech and. In my knowledge of this defense
- 1:47:20the the corners play a lot of your deeper to kind of man match
- 1:47:27type roles. OK.
- 1:47:33There's different ways to unfold things in the secondary.
- 1:47:37The way we do it that I could, I could ask my corner sometimes to
- 1:47:41sit underneath more like a cover to look, your typical cover to
- 1:47:45look, but it kind of depends on who your corner is.
- 1:47:52If you've got a physical corner that'll take on a a run or or
- 1:47:58really go down and pop a screen that they throw out there or or
- 1:48:03check down, then you can play more of that cover.
- 1:48:06Two types that look, if they're better in the coverage wise,
- 1:48:13maybe you look more like a cover three, you know, playing them
- 1:48:18more deep, playing them on a match on a single receiver, you
- 1:48:22know, that kind of thing. Do you do you see?
- 1:48:26Off process on it. Do you see half half fields,
- 1:48:29half field man, half fields on with some of these schemes?
- 1:48:33Like what secret run? Yeah, you see a lot like pro
- 1:48:39wise, you see a lot of split coverages.
- 1:48:44For some reason, a lot of teams in the NFL now have gone to a
- 1:48:48little bit more of your traditional zone stuff and not
- 1:48:52doing as much of the split coverages.
- 1:48:56But it's especially when you hit, when you look back at like
- 1:49:01the Darrelle Revis and that kind of thing, they would go against
- 1:49:07a team that would go, you know, twins with a tight end and then
- 1:49:12a single receiver on the backside.
- 1:49:13Well, you knew Revis was going to that backside.
- 1:49:16He's going to that single receiver and he's going to shut
- 1:49:18them down. You better figure out what you
- 1:49:20want to do with them three over there because this one is is
- 1:49:22locked down. And I mean, that could be a
- 1:49:25possibility. If Lovett's that guy, then maybe
- 1:49:28they tell Lovett, hey, go lock that one down.
- 1:49:31And we forced him to play half of the field.
- 1:49:35Maybe that's something he does. Maybe they have a receiver that,
- 1:49:39hey, we know we got to put air man on that receiver and then
- 1:49:44we'll take our chances with the other ones.
- 1:49:47And you know, I play a lot of when I play my split coverage,
- 1:49:51I'll put a man on a receiver and then I'll put a safety over top
- 1:49:56and maybe a linebacker inside of it.
- 1:49:58So I take away inside routes. I I have help over the top, the
- 1:50:03vertical routes, that kind of thing that gets a little bit
- 1:50:06harder and you know, the higher level of football in high
- 1:50:13school. Sometimes that one guy that's
- 1:50:15out there that I'm putting three guys in charge of making sure he
- 1:50:18doesn't catch anything might be the only thing they have.
- 1:50:22You ain't going to run across the college football team that
- 1:50:25you just look at there and go. That's the only thing they have.
- 1:50:28We shut him down. They don't stand a chance.
- 1:50:32I know you know looking back at Marv like we there, there was a
- 1:50:36lot more like kind of man under looks last year.
- 1:50:42You think we're going to see a lot of that go away?
- 1:50:47I don't know, like I think you have the opportunity to be able
- 1:50:51to see it, especially with the type of personnel that they
- 1:50:54could put on the field at times. OK, I think it's still an option
- 1:51:00to be able to do. But yeah, I love a man under
- 1:51:04look, a lot of times, especially against a team that I know is
- 1:51:07not going to line up and pound the ball at me that wants to
- 1:51:10throw some screens and throw some quick game like that.
- 1:51:13I'll play the man and rob it with somebody over top of it.
- 1:51:17But if you if you got a team that's going to come out there
- 1:51:19and the quarterback is a threat to to fake that take off up the
- 1:51:24middle through all of that, it's it'll bring in.
- 1:51:27You know Bernie. It's going to kind of depend on
