Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Making a Hard Call That Felt Really, Really Right
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey everybody, Emily Abadi here coming to you from the
- 0:22Speaker 1: Age studio. You are listening to five Minute Friday from Hurdle.
- 0:28Speaker 1: We made it through another week, A full week for
- 0:32Speaker 1: me at home, mostly early bedtimes, a little bit of
- 0:36Speaker 1: fun mixed in there, and I am prepping to be
- 0:40Speaker 1: off on another adventure, heading back to the West Coast.
- 0:43Speaker 1: No Hurdler meetups there exclusively for a lot of work,
- 0:47Speaker 1: but excited to grab myself a little bit warmer temperature
- 0:51Speaker 1: as although this week has been stunning in New York
- 0:54Speaker 1: and see myself some palm trees for five Minute Friday
- 0:58Speaker 1: this week.
- 0:59Speaker 2: I want to talk to you guys about something that
- 1:01Speaker 2: I have been.
- 1:03Speaker 1: I don't know if navigating is the right word, because
- 1:07Speaker 1: I feel really confident and happy.
- 1:09Speaker 2: I don't know if happy is the right word either.
- 1:11Speaker 1: I am dealing this is such a sexy word, with
- 1:14Speaker 1: planto fasciitis in my heel. And basically what plantofasciitis is,
- 1:18Speaker 1: if I'm going to get specific, it's inflammation of a
- 1:21Speaker 1: thick band of tissue that essentially runs from your heel
- 1:26Speaker 1: bone to your toes or the ball of your foot,
- 1:29Speaker 1: across the whole bottom of your foot and when you
- 1:32Speaker 1: get inflammation, a lot of individuals feel pain.
- 1:36Speaker 2: In their heel.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Now.
- 1:37Speaker 1: I've been like dealing with a little bit of plant
- 1:41Speaker 1: fasciitis pain over the last few months, but recently it's
- 1:47Speaker 1: gotten to the point where it won't really bother me
- 1:49Speaker 1: on my run, but after my run, I'll be hobbling around.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Like last weekend, after I went on a eleven mile
- 1:57Speaker 1: run with my friend Willie, I went to brunch with
- 2:00Speaker 1: my mom and I literally limped from my apartment to
- 2:04Speaker 1: brunch and limped home and was like so excited to
- 2:08Speaker 1: put my foot in a bucket of ice water. So
- 2:11Speaker 1: clearly some things needed to shift, and I made the
- 2:16Speaker 1: kind of frustrating decision, but write decision to not run
- 2:20Speaker 1: the Brooklyn Half Marathon next weekend. It's just not smart
- 2:24Speaker 1: for me right now to go out and race thirteen
- 2:28Speaker 1: miles knowing that afterward I will not be walking super
- 2:34Speaker 1: well and it could do further damage. And that is
- 2:37Speaker 1: not what we want. I want to think long term.
- 2:40Speaker 1: I want to think longevity. I want to fix this
- 2:43Speaker 1: issue asap. I've already spoken to my PT. We have
- 2:47Speaker 1: a plan of attack, and my plan of attack is
- 2:50Speaker 1: one that will work for me. And has things considered
- 2:53Speaker 1: for me and may not work for you. However, there
- 2:56Speaker 1: are a bunch of different helpful exercises that he's giving me,
- 2:59Speaker 1: so at some point or another I will share those
- 3:01Speaker 1: over on the socials. But the point of this is
- 3:05Speaker 1: not just to express to you that this is this
- 3:07Speaker 1: thing that I am dealing with, but more so reflect
- 3:10Speaker 1: on how I felt about canceling my Brooklyn half marathon
- 3:15Speaker 1: registration for next weekend versus how I felt about canceling
- 3:18Speaker 1: my London Marathon registration last year. And what I noticed
- 3:23Speaker 1: in making this decision was that I didn't feel so
- 3:27Speaker 1: emotional about it.
- 3:29Speaker 2: I wasn't so.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Angry or frustrated or caught up in the things that
- 3:33Speaker 1: I couldn't change, but rather very much calm and aware
- 3:43Speaker 1: that the decision that I was making was the best
- 3:47Speaker 1: decision for me, and that there will be other Brooklyn
- 3:50Speaker 1: half marathons, and that by making this decision now, I'm
- 3:54Speaker 1: putting myself in hopefully a better place for other things
- 3:57Speaker 1: that I am excited about in the months to come,
- 4:01Speaker 1: specifically knock on would the London Marathon in October. I
- 4:08Speaker 1: will keep you updated, but remember that everyone's journey is different,
- 4:13Speaker 1: right so, like I said, the plan of attack that
- 4:17Speaker 1: I have is one that I have carefully discussed with
- 4:20Speaker 1: my physical therapist, and I am doing what is right
- 4:26Speaker 1: for me and my body. And that might look different
- 4:29Speaker 1: if you have dealt with a similar injury yourself from
- 4:33Speaker 1: what might be right for you and your body. I
- 4:37Speaker 1: digress my prompter you this week? What has been something recently?
- 4:42Speaker 1: Maybe a situation that you handled in a certain way
- 4:45Speaker 1: that you realized demonstrated a fair amount of growth from
- 4:50Speaker 1: a previous hurdle moment. What is a situation that you
- 4:55Speaker 1: navigated recently that you came to understand exempt a fair
- 5:01Speaker 1: amount of growth from a previous hurdle moment?
- 5:06Speaker 2: And now a listener question.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Hi, this is Ash from Richmond. I had the chance
- 5:10Speaker 3: to hear you talk in DC at the goal setting workshop.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Wanted to say thank you got my button gear to
- 5:15Speaker 3: handle some things I've been avoiding. I have acne scars,
- 5:18Speaker 3: so I am on the route to recovery. Why don't
- 5:21Speaker 3: you talk about skin or genetics because that really makes
- 5:23Speaker 3: you who you are mentally, physically, athletically the rabbit hole skin?
- 5:27Speaker 2: What are you using? What do you love?
- 5:28Speaker 3: What treatments have you tried? Also just thank you girl.
- 5:31Speaker 3: You're so magical.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Ugh Ash, what is going on? Hey?
- 5:36Speaker 1: Girlfriend, I hope you're doing well down in Richmond. It
- 5:40Speaker 1: was so nice to meet you down in DC, and
- 5:42Speaker 1: I hope to be back in that area definitely over
- 5:45Speaker 1: the summer. I will keep you posted. Skincare, it is
- 5:50Speaker 1: certainly not an area that I am a pro at.
- 5:53Speaker 1: In fact, it is one that I have a lot
- 5:55Speaker 1: of growth to do. I would say for the most part,
- 5:59Speaker 1: I'm not the kind of that breaks out often and
- 6:01Speaker 1: my skincare routine, so to speak. I have a bunch
- 6:04Speaker 1: of different products in my medicine cabinet. Many of them,
- 6:07Speaker 1: I'm very grateful for this are sent to me. Some
- 6:11Speaker 1: of them are drunk Elephant. I have Covey from Emila Didonado.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Who was on the show.
- 6:18Speaker 1: And I basically do a makeup wipe, then I do
- 6:23Speaker 1: a face wash, any face wash cleanser. Once or twice
- 6:27Speaker 1: a week. I'll use a cleanser that has an exfoliant
- 6:29Speaker 1: in it. Then I'll use like one of the toners.
- 6:33Speaker 1: After that, I'll use one of the I'll just like
- 6:36Speaker 1: pick a serum.
- 6:39Speaker 2: I'll finish with a moisturizer.
- 6:41Speaker 1: I'm really big on this specific keels moisturizer.
- 6:46Speaker 2: They're ultra facial cream it is called, and that's the
- 6:50Speaker 2: whole shebang.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Again, clearly you can tell from my description of this
- 6:54Speaker 1: that I'm not a beauty wiz. I don't even know
- 6:56Speaker 1: in the names of half of the products that are
- 6:58Speaker 1: in my medicine cabinet. The most quote unquote annoying skin
- 7:02Speaker 1: condition that I deal with is I get those small
- 7:05Speaker 1: bumps and I don't have the clinical name for them,
- 7:08Speaker 1: but along my forehead in my forehead because of excess sweat.
- 7:14Speaker 1: But other than that, I uh yeah, just try at
- 7:19Speaker 1: the very least to wash my makeup off at the
- 7:21Speaker 1: end of the day, and sometimes even that is just
- 7:24Speaker 1: to win. If you want more skincare tips and tricks,
- 7:28Speaker 1: I did sit down with Renee Rollo. She is an
- 7:33Speaker 1: unbelievable expert founder of as you Know It, Renee Rouleau Skincare.
- 7:38Speaker 1: I will link her episode in the show notes so
- 7:40Speaker 1: that you can find some of that goodness there. But
- 7:42Speaker 1: thanks Ash for your question and your sweet compliment. You're
- 7:45Speaker 1: so kind. Make sure you're following along with Hurdle over
- 7:48Speaker 1: on the socials is at a Hurdle podcast. I am
- 7:50Speaker 1: over at Emily a Body, have yourself a beautiful weekend.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time
- 8:07Speaker 1: In my head.
