- 0:00Speaker 1: Later on. Meantime, it's go to the stage. Catherine Ferkins,
- 0:02Speaker 1: what's Catherine. Very good morning to you.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Hi, They good morning.
- 0:05Speaker 1: So he's appealing or not, We don't know yet.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Well, we don't know if he's appealing, but I think
- 0:10Speaker 2: we're almost certainly going to see it, you know. Of course,
- 0:13Speaker 2: yesterday Hunter Biden had that inauspicious honor of becoming the
- 0:16Speaker 2: first child of a sitting president ever to be convicted
- 0:20Speaker 2: on criminal charges. The jury took just three hours to
- 0:23Speaker 2: find him guilty on federal gun crimes, and essentially the
- 0:27Speaker 2: case spoiled down to the fact that he was using
- 0:29Speaker 2: drugs at the time he purchased a firearm in twenty eighteen.
- 0:33Speaker 2: He didn't disclose that condition when making the purchase, and
- 0:36Speaker 2: that's something that's illegal here in the US. But whether
- 0:39Speaker 2: this conviction stands will be an interesting test of the
- 0:43Speaker 2: justice system now because many legal experts suggest there are
- 0:46Speaker 2: several avenues of appeal that Hunter Biden could take now.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Already we've seen his attorneys file three motions for acquittal,
- 0:53Speaker 2: which the judge has yet to rule on. But separately,
- 0:56Speaker 2: he may be able to use some constitutional arguments to
- 1:00Speaker 2: dablished disappeal. I think the most likely avenue we're going
- 1:03Speaker 2: to see is that the defense will argue the charges
- 1:06Speaker 2: are not constitutional under the Second Amendment. Essentially, he's going
- 1:11Speaker 2: to say that Hunter has a constitutional right to own
- 1:15Speaker 2: a firearm. They could also look at the sixth Amendment,
- 1:18Speaker 2: which guarantees defendants certain rights in criminal proceedings. That's essentially
- 1:21Speaker 2: going to be a technicality argument, But either way, there
- 1:25Speaker 2: is a lot at stake for the President's son here.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Not only is he facing potentially twenty five years jail,
- 1:31Speaker 2: he's also facing fines of up to seven hundred and
- 1:34Speaker 2: fifty thousand US dollars. That's over one point two million
- 1:38Speaker 2: New Zealand dollars. And of course this is a shocking
- 1:41Speaker 2: look for the Biden family during such a crucial year.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Right to the war. The person I feel most sorry for,
- 1:47Speaker 1: the person with the job you wouldn't want, is Blink.
- 1:48Speaker 1: And of course, who's god knows how many miles he's
- 1:50Speaker 1: wracked up going back and forward and back and forth.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Where are we at with a so called.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Ceswy Well, you're absolutely right, and he's actually in the
- 1:56Speaker 2: region at the moment, still pushing for this new US
- 1:59Speaker 2: back ceasefire. But unfortunately he says, basically, they've reached a
- 2:04Speaker 2: bit of limbo. He says that it's now her Mass
- 2:06Speaker 2: that continues to keep changing its demands. In fact, he
- 2:10Speaker 2: said that they continue to move the goalposts of this
- 2:13Speaker 2: original US batch proposal. Initially, on May six, Hamas claimed
- 2:18Speaker 2: to agree to a ceasefire deal, and at the time
- 2:21Speaker 2: they were pushing for what would be in effect about
- 2:23Speaker 2: a twelve week pause in fighting before a permanent ceasefire.
- 2:28Speaker 2: That situation would have effectively prevented Israel from being able
- 2:31Speaker 2: to recommence military operations at all. And this is all
- 2:35Speaker 2: happening now at a time when I'm sure you've seen,
- 2:37Speaker 2: we've just had the release of the United Nations first
- 2:40Speaker 2: in depth investigation into the October seven attack and the
- 2:43Speaker 2: ensuing conflict. That report has found that both Israel and
- 2:47Speaker 2: Her Mass have committed war crimes and grave violations of
- 2:50Speaker 2: international law. And all of this back and forth now
- 2:54Speaker 2: with the negotiations whether we're going to get this ceasefire
- 2:57Speaker 2: deal done, all happening is The UN also says that
- 2:59Speaker 2: we've now got more than a million Palestinians who are
- 3:03Speaker 2: set to face starvation as early as next month. So
- 3:06Speaker 2: it just couldn't be a more urgent situation. But unfortunately,
- 3:09Speaker 2: as you say, it doesn't seem to matter how many
- 3:11Speaker 2: miles Blinkin does or what the US does here. A
- 3:14Speaker 2: Cespy deal just doesn't seem like it's happening at the moment.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Good to catch up, Katherine, appreciate it well, see you
- 3:19Speaker 1: next week, Katherine Fokin out of the States.
