- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Haunted Ozark Theater.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: H O T, your Hot Horror Podcast.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: And we're back, folks, to talk about the entirety of the Friday the 13th franchise.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Really excited about this.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Lots of homework was done, lots of research.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: We got some good.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: It was horrible, Paul.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: I just hated it.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Our job is tough.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Oh man.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Tough job, y'all.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Um we're gonna go real deep.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Uh and there's a lot of ground to cover, so this might be a little bit of a longer episode.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: We'll see.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Um, of course, first we gotta do today in horror history.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: It's August 2nd.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: What is that for us?
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: It's Wes Craven's birthday.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Today's Wes Craven's birthday.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Wes Craven's birthday.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: We did a whole episode about Wes Craven and Friday 13th uh a while back.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: And of course, his most famous invention is Freddie Kruger.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: And we will talk about Freddie Kruger today because he did make an appearance in the uh Friday 13th franchise.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, technically technically, yeah.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Technically twice.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: So happy birthday, Wes Craven, and thank you for Freddie.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Uh, what have you been re-watching?
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: You said that you got quite a list for us.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: I've got quite a list, but there is one movie in particular I'm going to talk about today on my rewatch because you got me thinking, we I don't know if we asked the audience or it was private, but you asked me, what franchise do you want to do next?
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Friday 13th.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: And I picked Friday 13th, but it really got me thinking about Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: So I went back and I watched all those.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: What didn't really do it just to watch them.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: And there was one that I don't know if I missed it.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: I didn't remember anything about, and that was Leatherface, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1990.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: And it's probably my favorite now.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: That's part three, right?
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: That's part it was a blast.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: It gets hate, it was chopped by the MPAA, Vega Mortenson dude, yeah, Ken uh Floray in it.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, yeah, it's Leatherface.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: It's awesome.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: It's and uh one other thing when you get done listening to this podcast, check out the trailer.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: The teaser trailer is probably the greatest teaser trailer for any movie.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: It's amazing.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't remember the trailer.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: I've definitely seen three multiple times, and even not too long ago, did I watch it?
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: It's fantastic.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: I loved it so much when I got done.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: I got on Trigger Treat Studios and I ordered the mask.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it is definitely hated on, for sure.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: And it never dawned on me while why people gave it so much hate.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: I liked it as a kid.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: I watched it as a younger adult, liked it.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: And then, like I said, I watched it maybe just two years, three years ago.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: And I still liked it.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: It's really different.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: And one thing that I think you and I have talked about before is the first three Texas chainsaw massacres are each one is so different from each other.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: Well, that like then part three, it gets rid of two.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: So in this, you know, it's one and then that one.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: And they explain that um the cook he got electrified, they killed him, but the rest of them kind of moved and went out and hunting and or on the on the land.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: So I just thought it was a neat.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: I loved the family.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: I love the the characters.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: I loved everything about it, man.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: It was a blast.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Very much where Devil's Rejects gets their ideas.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: A lot.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: A lot.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: And we're talking about Friday the 13th, and it's very suggestive in this that that the little girl is Leatherface's daughter, but she's the little girl in part seven who uh telekinesis girl.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: That's her.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: We're definitely gonna talk about that one.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: And another thing about this movie, the trailer.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: Guess who plays Leatherface in the teaser trailer?
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: Kane Hotter.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: Oh, there you go.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: So he's been Jason, Freddie, Leatherface.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: Hatchet.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Hatchet.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: That's he's my hatchet.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: He's we've talked about Hatchet quite a bit.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Um nice, dude.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: And of course, all the Friday 13th, too, as far as rewatches.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: And a shout out to because I did a lot of research on Leatherface on that one.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: All the practical effects were done by Greg Nicotero.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: He did.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: So I mean, it's a bonus.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: Well, Greg Nicotero is in my uh rewatch topic because I have been watching season two of Creep Show.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: So for the uninitiated, Creep Show was an anthology film in the 80s.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: Then they made a Creep Show 2, which was not quite as good as part one, but not bad though.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: And then Creep Show kind of sat dormant for 30 years, maybe.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: Um I'm um it's Creep Show one, the one with the blob in the water.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, no, the raft one.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: I love the yes, I think that's part two.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Okay, the first one's with the Indian, the store Indian.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Uh, I think that's part two.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: The dude twos the best.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Creep Show one is like when Stephen King has the green stuff.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: The plant, yeah, come the comic comes.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Very color out of space kind of thing.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: Yep, and then the thing in the crate.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then Ted Dansa Ted Dancing on the beach.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's part one.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: Uh that is good.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: I like part two better than part two is good.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: I part one is just so good.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: But like I was about to say, then then creep show just kind of sat for like 30 years, and then Greg Nicotero and Shudder did four or five seasons of Creep Show television series.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: And y'all, if you haven't seen it, it's worth checking out.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: It's fun, it's really, really fun.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: It's on Shudder.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Um, I watched part, I watched season one a long time ago, probably when it was brand new in 2019, I think.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: And for whatever reason, I didn't keep up with it.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: So I have started with season two, and these are all new to me because I I never watched get past the first season.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: Uh, and it's been really, really fun.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: And there's one episode in particular that I just want to highlight real quick because it was it was a blast.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: It was an Evil Dead episode.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you've seen this or not.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: So I can't remember which episode it is in season two, but it's uh it's a um public access television station, you know, like PBS, but it's it's like their version of it.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: And there's a uh there's a book lady kind of like a reading rainbow thing, but also kind of like a lamb chop thing.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: She's got like a little puppet.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: So, and then there's a Bob Ross kind of thing, doing the painting, the painter, who's like an ex-military badass, and then there's an antiques roadshow type of show.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: So it kind of highlights each one of these shows, and then it goes to it ends on the on the Antiques Roadshow show.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: The host invites his guests to come out and bring his antique with him, and it's Ted Raimi.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: Oh, wow.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Playing himself.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Hi, I'm Ted Raimi.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Oh, really?
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: And okay, what did you bring for us to the Antiques Roadshow?
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: Did he bring the book?
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: I brought the Necronomicon.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Been in my family for generations, blah blah blah blah.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: So he opened, they they opened the Necronomicon.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: Right on the the antique uh expert guy who's hosting the show.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: He reads from it.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: We talked about that.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: He's like, oh, I know some Sumerian.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: So he reads from it.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: That's hilarious.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: Now we have Evil Dead on Creep Show running loose in a public access.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: You had that has to be like dude, it's so good.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's fantastic.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: So now you have a public access television network overrun by Dead Eyes.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: That's all that's all the reason I need to watch that.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, dude, it's got Ted Ted Raimi in it, and of course, um, you know, they they go to the uh the Bob Ross type of guy, and he's you know, he's a he's very Bob Ross.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Happy little trees, and thanks, God bless, and thanks for watching, and blah blah.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: So they go to him and they're like, All hell's breaking loose, we need your help.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: He rolls up his sleeve and shows his tattoos.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: No, he shows his simper fi.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: Tattoo.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: And then he jumps into action, and so now you got you know, ex-marine Bob Ross type fighting the deadites, and pretty fun.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: Oh, dude, it's fantastic.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Awesome.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: I it's like a it's like a chapter of Evil Dead that I didn't even know existed.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Now that yeah, you can put that with the code.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: You can put it like in the canon, dude.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: It's oh man, it sounds pretty fun.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: Watch it.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: It was gonna check it out.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: It was a blast.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: I just sat there with a smile on my face.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: What do you now?
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: You may not know this.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: Do you remember the name of the episode?
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: I I I'm just asking, because was it a surprise to you to go, holy smokes?
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Like it I didn't see it coming at first, but then yeah, I think the episode was called like public access of the dead or something like that.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: Okay, so you weren't expecting anything evil dead.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: So when you seen this happening, it was a total woo-hoo moment, gotcha.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: Even better, even better.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: Ted Raimi comes out, and I'm like, Oh, it's Ted Raimi, and they're like and they're like, We're joined by Ted Raimi.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: And then Ted's like, hi, I'm Ted Raimi.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: I'm like, what the heck is going on?
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: I've got something I'd like to show you.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: Brings out the Necronomicon, and you're like, Oh, now I know where this is going to be.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you knew that they're gonna read buckle in and it's gonna be great.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: Cool.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: Effects were good.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Creep shows they do, they do a dynamite job.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: It's Nickotero, you know, he's the executive producer on the whole thing.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: So he's gonna make sure it's yeah, and it's all he's not he's not digitally doing anything, he's doing everything practical.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: And sometimes, you know, not this particular episode, but sometimes it's very like the the effects are very campy, very like 50s sci-fi horror or 50s, you know, uh monster movie horror kind of a thing.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: But on but they do it on purpose, you know, they're doing it on purpose like that as a throwback.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: Anyway, I'd uh I've been having a blast watching season two of creep show.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Did you finish it?
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: I'm feel I'm finished with season two, yeah.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: So now it's on to season three.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: And there's even uh there's two specials.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: I think there's a Halloween special and a Christmas special.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: Well, watch that Halloween one, yeah.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: I can consult you.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: So I have now watched season one and two and got nothing but good things to say about it.
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: And you are watching these on shutter, on shutter, yeah.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: There you go, shutter, yeah.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: Plugs for shutter.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: All right, Paul, you ready to get down to the nitty-gritty?
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we're gonna talk about Friday the 13th, and like I said, we got a lot of ground to cover.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, we can't spend tons of time on each one, but what I did was I went film by film, I watched them, and I just made four or five little notes about each one.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: Did you pick your favorite, not to know kills out of because I'd like to talk about favorite kill out of each one?
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: Okay, I mean, I had I probably don't have one for each one, but I definitely when one really stood out, I wrote it down.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: Love it.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Do you want to start?
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: You want me to start?
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: Sure, go ahead.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: So Friday 13th is the brainchild of Sean S.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: Cunningham.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: He's the producer, and uh, I think he even directed the first one.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: He did.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: He did.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: But he is the producer on many of them.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Uh, he was a producer just kind of bouncing around Hollywood in the 70s, and he was letting the studios tell him what to make.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: And he had two studios tell him this was right after Bad News Bears came out.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Bad News Bears comes out, it's a big hit, and they told him, Give me, give me something similar to Bad News Bears.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: Sean Cunningham didn't do Bad News Bears, but the studios were thinking that's what's hot.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: Give me these family comedies where the kids are the are the stars of the show.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: So he made a movie called Here Comes the Tigers, based kind of on the Bad News Bears idea.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: He made another one called Manny's Orphans.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: Again, along those same lines.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Both of them just absolutely bombed.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: And he was pissed because he was like, I didn't want to make either of these movies, but the studios are telling me that this is what's gonna sell.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: And I knew better, but I made them anyway to make the studios happy, and then both of them bombed.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: I'm pissed.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: Kind of I told him so.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he was he was really not happy about it.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: So then he goes and sees this movie called Halloween.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: Well, a little what was it called?
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: A little tiny movie you might have heard of called Halloween.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, 1978.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, 1978, year I was born.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: Um he goes and he goes and sees this movie Halloween in theater, and then you know, a couple weeks later, the box office numbers are just blowing everybody's minds, and he said, I don't care what the studios say, that's what I'm gonna do.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna make the next Halloween.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: Little money and look what it made.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: He came up with the title Friday the 13th and nothing else.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: Yep, he didn't have a story, he didn't have characters, nothing.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: He went to his buddies who were, I think were in Boston.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: They were like the money guys, the guys he knew that he could get money out of them to make a movie.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: He went to them and said, Uh, I got I got a title, and that's it, Friday 13th.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: What can we do with it?
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: And let's let's do something.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: So they gave him the money that he needed, and then he hired, you know, writers and everything.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: Victor Miller.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: And they came up with uh, you know, what turned out to be the Friday 13th that we all know and love.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: Because of how he financed it, it's technically an independent film, and it was the first independent film ever to get nationwide release.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: No, there's you know, there had been a lot of indie films prior to Friday 13th, but they all got regional releases, none of them ever got a national nationwide release.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Friday 13th was the first one.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: Boom.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: He showed the you know, first cut to a studio uh which was Paramount, and Paramount has such faith in it, they released it nationwide.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: First indie to ever get released nationwide.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: Again, horror making history.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: See, I want to okay, I'm gonna pause you right there because the reason we're all in this trouble right now and we can't get another Friday the 13th, Sean Cunningham and Victor Miller.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: So I don't know how that works because I guess Victor Miller can go, well, I created the name of Jason then, but and Sean can go, well, I got the whole Friday the 13th, and it it's horrible for us fans.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but how do how do you think that works?
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: And I mean I don't really know, and that's but you're right, that's part of the reason why things are frozen right now.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: Because I think Victor wants more credit than he gets, or probably, but you know, there was this is why Friday uh Freddie versus Jason took like 15 years to get made, you know, for the same reason.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: People fighting over who gets the credit.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: Money.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: I hope it's all okay.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: Sorry, just wanted to No, but those those are my tidbits for part one.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: And it, you know, we don't need to talk about part one as far as the plot or anything.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: We all know that backwards and forwards, but I know I think a lot of people watching these don't know uh little it takes place in New Jersey.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: Like as a kid, I always thought it was the South for some reason.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: Oh, really?
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: Well, it takes place in Crystal Lake, New York.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: New York, I'm saying yes, but it was filmed in New Jersey, yes.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: You're you're right about that.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: It was filmed in New Jersey, but we're supposed to believe that it's New York.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: New York, right.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: And they filmed the first two, I believe, in Jersey at that same lake, and then it became cost prohibitive for Hollywood to keep filming out there.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: Because the third one they're actually in California and they build the little lake.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, first one I can, I mean, uh the most you talk about people they remember about that movie is two things that it's mama doing the killings, yeah, and the very end, Jason popping up and the big final scare.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: And uh, I think I mean that really sold it.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: Oh, and Kevin Bacon.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: One of the coolest kills, the arrows going up through the bed.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, straight out of Tom Savini.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: Straight out his lyrics, yeah.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: And Tom Savini created that Jason popping out of the water, which we'll go into later.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Tom Savini.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: Um I think Friday was his second movie that he was like the lone ranger for the special effects.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: Because he had come up under Romero, learning the craft as like an apprentice.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: I think Dawn of the Dead was his first one where he got the keys to the kingdom.
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: And they said, You're the special effects guy now.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: And after Dawn of the Dead next was Friday 13th.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: I did find one fact here.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: Uh, the surprise jump came from Sean, and he said he wanted an ending that was like Carrie.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that shock value.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: And he knew that from Carrie.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: I saw him, he I think he called it a jump out of your seat moment or something like that.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: But he yeah, he he said, I just wanted one last scare as they leave the the auditorium.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: And it did it, and but also he had no intention of Jason ever coming back.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: No, they wanted and when Dick continued that like an anthology, like Halloween 3 was gonna be like every Friday 13th was a different character's different stories, but it didn't like that.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: Sean Cunningham suggested that what we see at the end is actually a dream, and that that was supposed to be the one and only time we see Jason.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: Well, which brings me to the question: did uh Pamela Voorhees know her son was dead the whole time?
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: Was she killing people with the idea, or did because in part two, Jason's very much alive, he's a full-grown man.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: So did Pam just did he never reveal himself to his mother?
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: I've always had questions like that.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I I think that's one of the you know plot holes, for lack of a better term, is he he's he he stayed hidden from his mom?
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: He loved her so much.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: When he when he saw her get beheaded, that's when he was like, I gotta come out of hiding now.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: So let's talk about prep part two.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: You got 1981.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: Anything you want to say about part two?
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: Uh did you know for this one they didn't want the burlap sack altogether?
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: That they wanted him to look like a mountain man, the long red hair, the beard, the long fingernails, and really make it look like this dude had been living on his own for a long time.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: Um the only thing I did not know that.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: The only thing I have about the sackhead is that now when you and I talked about the town that dreaded sundown, yes, sir, we speculated that maybe they got the idea for the sack from the second killer.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: And Steve Minor, I found an interview with Steve Minor, the director of part two, and he confirmed, yes.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: We we borrowed the idea from the town the dreaded sundown.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: And kind of looking ahead to part three, uh, they had every intention of keeping Jason in the sack.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: Um, but then two weeks after part two came out, David Lynch's Elephant Man came out, and in Elephant Man, there's scenes where he covers his face with a potato sack with a potato sack.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: So they said, Well, we gotta do something different.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: We gotta do something different in part three, and that's kind of what led to the hockey mask ultimately.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: But um let's talk about because we just said Cunningham didn't want Jason back for part two.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: So, how did he come back?
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: Did you did you find anything about that?
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: I think it's just executives, like they were like, because a lot of people were shocked, like, no, Jason died in the water, he died as a little boy.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: What's he doing here now?
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: So I couldn't find any one person who put a stamp on I'm the reason we have an adult Jason.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: Could you the same producers that he went to for for money for part one?
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: He went back to them, those same guys, producers out of Boston who had money, he went to them and said, I uh I want to make a part two.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: Are you guys on board?
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: And they said, Heck yeah.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: They said, We have one condition if you want our money to make a part two, Jason's got to be the bad guy.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: Awesome.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: And Cunningham left, he left the project over that decision.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: I wonder why.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: The producers, he he said, I saw an interview with Cunningham where he said, I was I was ready to die on the hill that this was a bad idea.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: And then the movie came out, and then Jason became what Jason was, and he's had to go and say, I was wrong.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: Sean Cunningham, he was he'll he's the first one to admit that he was wrong, but it was the it was the money guys, the producer.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Producers said, We'll give you the money if we if we have Jason come back as the as the main focus, and Sean cunning into, I don't want to do it.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: And as and in fact, I'm out.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: See, and that's just little things like that.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: How crazy.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: Because if he would have won, Sean would have won.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: We're not getting Jason Borges like we have today.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: And we probably wouldn't have 12 movies.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're not talking about well, you know what I mean?
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's crazy.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: So that that's part two.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: That's the that's the deal with part two.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: How many years does it take place after part one and two?
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: Put you on the spot.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: Five years good.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: And after this one, so two, three, and four take place Friday, Saturday, and Sunday back to back to that.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: I do want to make, even though that is true, I do want to make a quick little break.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: In my mind, now like you said, three, four, and five are back to back-to-back stories.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: Two three-four.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: Or two, three, four are back to back-to-back stories.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: But um I kind of when I looked at all 12 movies over those past couple weeks, I kind of looked at one, two, and three as like the OG trilogy.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: Then I kind of looked at four, five, and six as kind of like the zombie trilogy.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: Then I looked at seven, eight, and nine as kind of the trying to reinvent Jason trilogy.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: Seven, eight, and nine each tried to do something totally different and all fell flat on their face.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: And then let's see, uh 10, 11, and 12 would be the new line trilogy.
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: Or new line took over.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: That's that's how I kind of broke it up in my in my mind.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: But you're correct.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Two, three, and four are cohesive stories.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: But four, four, five, and six, you could call it the the zombie Jason trilogy, or you could also call it the the or just get rid of five.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, not five, but I would put five as its own movie.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: You could take out the name Friday the 13th, and I think it would have been better for it at the time.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: But four, five, and six all have the common thread of Tommy, Tommy Jarvis.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: So I would also maybe call it the Tommy Jarvis True.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: Chronicles or something.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: That'd be real neat.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: So let's talk about part three.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: What do you got for part three?
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: Uh it's my favorite in the franchise.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we've talked about it being your favorite.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this is what really sold me on Jason.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: This is where he gets the hockey mask.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: Like we said earlier, uh, they stopped filming um upstate New York, moved it to California.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: It was cheaper.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: Uh even that little lake that she ends up in at the end, and we're uh it's like two feet deep.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they made that.
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: That was mainly stuck and there was mosquitoes everywhere.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but this one, man, it's my favorite.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: Jason gets that hockey mask, and he becomes the Jason we all know and love.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: The hockey mask is a is this is this is landmark cinema history.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: Where where we get the hockey mask.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: A little trivia.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: Did you know that this movie is the movie that dethroned Steven Spielberg's I don't know, E.T.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: E.T.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: was on top of the mountain until Friday 13th.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: Boom.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: Yep, it dethroned it and became number one.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: This is when they went number one.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: Yep, and over.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: I'm sure, I mean, Friday it was already gained a lot of popularity, but that 3D, I'm sure, helped you take it to the next one.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: And E.T.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: probably had a good run of several weeks of being number one, yeah.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: So let me ask you a question and then let me follow it up with another question.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: Who was who played Jason in part three?
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: Of Richard Brooker.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: Yes, sir.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: Do you know that Richard Brooker's in the circus has an Emmy Award?
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: For what?
- 25:46SPEAKER_00: This is fantastic.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: Richard Brooker, not for being in front of the camera, for being behind the camera.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: Oh, cool.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: Richard Brooker and a couple of other guys invented something that changed the course of filmmaking.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: Like a technical computer-y thing.
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: Like this is like super this is like super smart people stuff.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: Richard Brooker is not just a giant swinging a machete.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: Richard Brooker is big brain.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: He invented a thing called vid wave box.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: And here's the definition of vid wave box.
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: This is a quote it's an overbuilt workstation for demanding tasks like compositing, motion graphics, and high bit rate editing, ensuring smooth performance even under heavy loads.
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: He and a couple other guys invented this workstation and got an email.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: That's amazing.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: See, okay, I knew he's British.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: I've seen a lot of interviews where I've never seen one with him, but people said he was just the nicest guy.
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: But there's I've got a lot on my photo of him sitting in makeup with the Jason hoodie on and everything, and he's smoking his pipe.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: And even like that, you're like, dude, this guy looks smart.
- 27:07SPEAKER_01: So that all comes together.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: Now that makes sense.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: And he he produced TV shows after this.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: He um acted in TV shows.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: He yeah, he was a circus performer prior.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: This dude has done everything.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: He's done everything.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: He unfortunately died of a heart attack.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: But um he was kind of the opposite of uh uh who was the actor that came next who he hated yeah, Ted White, head white hated Corey Phillips.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: So they they said Richard Brooker was the opposite.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: He was like every time they said cut, Richard Brooker would take off his mask and he'd everybody okay?
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: You okay, son?
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: You okay, dear?
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: Like he wanted to make sure that nobody was scared of him.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: But Ted White, he stayed away from the cast, like stayed in characters, kept the mask on, stayed away from everybody, was kind of peeved at the actors, like total two different approaches to playing the villain.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: And I think, I mean, you really have to look at it that this is what most of anyone who's played Jason, they all you have to come back to that first one to watch him.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, Ted White had to come back and walk, okay, how did Jason walk?
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: Man, you're everything, and yeah, they make it their own, but everything is kind of you know based off of that interpretation of Jason.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: Definitely agree.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: Richard Brooker is the blueprint that for going forward.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you know, we had the opportunity to meet and talk with Derek Mears, and I would say Derek Mears is the closest thing that we have to Richard Brooker.
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but Derek Mears definitely studied Richard Brooker to do his butt.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think Richard Brooker came on the scene and said, This is how Jason's gonna be from now on.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: You know, we had the one prior to that, the part two Jason, but this is where Jason becomes Jason.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: Jason, absolutely.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: Not just because of the hockey mask, but also because of this when you think of Jason.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: This is I mean, 99% of people will think of this Jason.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: Definitely, definitely.
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: Okay, that brings us to part four.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: The final chapter, and this is this is the probably the the biggest one, the fan favorite among people.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: They love this one the most.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: Well, hardcore fans.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: After two and three being a little bit of a letdown, at least critically, and box office.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: Well, not box office, but three did great at the box office, but they wanted to end it with three.
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: Did you know that?
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: No, they they they did call in, but Jason was supposed to be dead, and then they made all that money, and then they were like, Steve, uh, what was his name?
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: Mancuso?
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: The guys who oh the the producer, yeah, they were gonna end it.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: Mancuso junior junior, yeah.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: And then so Ford, they're like, okay, this is gonna be it.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: We'll put the nail in the coffee, let's wrap it up.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: Well, so yeah, not commercially, but critically, two and three were were not they weren't as they weren't pleased.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: The studios weren't pleased with two and three's critical performance.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: So they brought back uh uh Tom Savini for part four.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: He's gonna kill his baby off.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: And now part of the reason was they they wanted the original, you know, some of their original magic back, but also they said it's gonna it's gonna end here.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: This is going to be the very last Friday 13th movie ever.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: So let's bring back Tom and let Tom be the one who kills him.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: And that's what sold Tom on coming back.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: Hey, yeah.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: Yes, Tom Savini said, if I can come back to finish off, you know, one of my greatest creations, then yes, I'll do it.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: And they even throw a little tribute to him when uh you know that's part three.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: Deborah's in the uh, I forgot about that where she's in the hammock, reading it's fangoria.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and talking about Tom Savini.
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: Oh Fangoria when she's pregnant.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: Reading Fangoria.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: Tommy Jarvis was named after Tom Savini.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: That was another little nod they gave to Tom.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: And again, this was supposed to be him on the way out, right?
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: You know, and then yeah, so Jason ends up with a machete in the head, slides down this is brutal in this dude.
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: He's you know straw.
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's struggling, but he's just the brutality in this.
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: Jason's pissed.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: Oh, wait, does he slide?
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: Does his head slide down the blade in three?
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: No, it's four.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: It's like he he knocks the mask off, hits him in the head, Jason falls down, and then little Tommy gets it and he was whacked in the high, yeah.
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: And he's he's shaved his head off to look like Jason to save his sister.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: So that's supposed to be it.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: That's supposed to be the end.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: We're supposed to be done.
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: Um, so then what happens?
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: It made too much money to end it.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it made way too much money.
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: It was number one in the box office for for a while, too.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: Did you know that?
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: Part part five.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: Part four.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: Part four, okay.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: And so they're like, well, it's making us all this money.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: We can't end this.
- 32:13SPEAKER_01: Like, and people love money.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: I loved part four.
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: I never had any issues with part four.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, and I wanted to uh you said something about Ted White, loved him as Jason, and he did he he didn't really get along with little Corey.
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: But did you know he almost quit the film?
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: Because that scene where the chick is on the raft and it's another kill where Jason kills her, that was in a uh a real lake or river or whatever, and she was freezing.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: She was getting hypothermia.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: I didn't hear that he almost quit the film, but I did hear that the director wasn't gonna stop.
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: Ted Sito.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: He was not gonna stop the take until they got the shot, and Ted White stepped in and said, I'm shutting this down and I'm getting her out of here.
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: And he literally picked her up and carried her out of the lake.
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: And I saw an interview with her, Judy Aronson.
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: Yes, she said he basically saved my life that night.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: He picked me up, carried me out of the lake, and took me into his trailer, a room with a fireplace or something.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: Let her get warm and everything.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: Warmed her up.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: And then she went back and they did end up finishing the scene um after she warmed up.
- 33:25SPEAKER_00: But she then the next day she ended up with hypothermia.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so yeah, he I didn't hear that he almost quit, but I did hear that the director was like, no, we gotta we gotta keep up.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: Something's CETO.
- 33:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't remember at this, but uh yeah, he he Ted stood up for Judy Aaron's because he's a he was a stunt man, Ted White wasn't he came into it really he was 55 years old and he didn't know at the time, and he was like he disowned himself from this movie for a long time for a long, long time, and then he started doing the conventions and he was like people love this, and he embraced it, and then I mean, yeah, which is awesome.
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: Very cool.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: So part five.
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: I love a new beginning, dude.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: I love a new beginning.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: They had to they had to call it a new beginning, and they had to figure out a way to get around the fact that Jason's dead that Jason's dead, and and he wasn't supposed to be coming back.
- 34:18SPEAKER_00: So, how'd they do that?
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: Well, I thought, you know, I never was fooled for once that I I kind of got the idea that they wanted you to think it was Tommy doing the killing.
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: Did you get that the first time you watched it?
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: Even as a little boy, it he's psychotic, he's seeing images of which man, those flashbacks and the the the images of Jason.
- 34:37SPEAKER_01: That's an awesome Jason, and we don't talk about that Jason enough.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: But uh did you think he was the one doing the killing?
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: Because as soon as I seen Roy and his face and how they panned out, and I was like, oh, he's the one who's gonna be doing the killing.
- 34:52SPEAKER_00: Like when you saw him at the very beginning, like in the ambulance?
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, when he comes to get his, you don't know it's his son at the time.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:58SPEAKER_01: But the that guy makes that sick joke and he kind of looks up, you're like and it plays ominous, means it and it fades out.
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: I I thought it was Tommy only because you know they they ended for making you think that if there's a future for this, it's Tommy's the new killer, right?
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: That's that's what they wanted you to believe.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, I kind of agree that it's pretty obvious that it was uh I forget the guy's the character's name, but yeah, the ambulance driver guy.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: It's pretty obvious that it's him.
- 35:33SPEAKER_00: Corey Burns, he's the killer.
- 35:35SPEAKER_00: And then um did you know that Corey Feldman was supposed to be in this one?
- 35:39SPEAKER_00: Yes, I was just gonna bring that up.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: So Cory Feldman, well, and he was he's a he does have the cameo at the beginning.
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: Like Bill Met in his backyard.
- 35:47SPEAKER_00: I was yeah, I was just gonna bring that up.
- 35:48SPEAKER_00: So they're they wanted Corey back to be Tommy, and he wasn't gonna be much older in part five than he was in part four.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: So they reach out to Corey Feldman, he's already under contract to go do the Goonies.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: Yep, so he couldn't take the part.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: So that's why there's a time jump in part five, he's older, and then they had to go with a different older actor.
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: The time jump explains why Tommy is so much older, and he's so much older because they had to cast a different actor, and he did great.
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he did really good.
- 36:28SPEAKER_00: I really enjoyed his performance as you know the kind of troubled PTSD teen in the uh, you know, kind of halfway house for troubled kids kind of a thing.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: A little background on him.
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: That dude didn't know because they had a different title filming it, and when he got the part, he didn't know it was that, and he was like a devout Christian, and he almost said take the film.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I didn't know that.
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: So yeah, they they they wanted to bridge the gap somehow.
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: So they reached out to Corey Feldman and said, like, can we get you for like a day?
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: A day.
- 37:04SPEAKER_00: And I guess if I don't know if it was his parents or his agent, but they said, um, Goonies gives us Sundays off.
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: Let's go.
- 37:13SPEAKER_00: I can I can give you one Sunday, and as you mentioned, they they dressed up Cory Feldman's own backyard and filled with the little graveyard in film those scenes in the in with a rain machine and all that, yeah, just so they can you know have a bridge that connects the two.
- 37:31SPEAKER_00: What do you think about a new beginning?
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: I I remember not loving it as a kid because it's not Jason, yeah.
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: But when I watched it just this past week, there was nothing wrong with it.
- 37:47SPEAKER_01: It's it's got one of the most kills.
- 37:48SPEAKER_01: It's got a lot of kids.
- 37:49SPEAKER_00: It's got 20 kills in it.
- 37:50SPEAKER_01: One of the chicks who gets uh killed with the um the lobbers her name is uh Lisa Linda Lind Lisa Voorhees, and they hired her because her last name was Voorhees, and she got fired from her teaching job.
- 38:05SPEAKER_01: She was a teacher, yeah, and they found out that she was in front of the 13th, they fired her.
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they've well not only that, but you know, she's topless.
- 38:12SPEAKER_00: She's topless.
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: This one is very uh poked right through the eyes with the thing that was directed by next porn director.
- 38:19SPEAKER_00: That's exactly correct.
- 38:20SPEAKER_00: He was a softcore porn guy, yeah.
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: And um you can tell in this.
- 38:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you can tell.
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: But yeah, this had 20 kills, and this was the most by far up to this point.
- 38:31SPEAKER_00: Before he does some killing.
- 38:33SPEAKER_00: Um, but two two more quick things about part four, part five, and then we'll move on.
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: Um, they they brought some dark humor into it, and that was the the director's touch.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: He was like, Let's do more boobies and more jokes.
- 38:46SPEAKER_00: Like that was kind of his uh thing.
- 38:48SPEAKER_00: Um, and everyone kind of talks about the plot being a little bit thin.
- 38:53SPEAKER_00: Like, why would they um build a halfway house for trouble teams?
- 38:59SPEAKER_00: Why would they build that on Crystal Lake?
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: Like But it's not on Crystal Lake.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: Well, it's never said that it's on Crystal Lake.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: Well, but that's the that's the the assumption, I guess.
- 39:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but man, there's just something about it, like like I was just saying a minute ago, like I didn't love it as a kid because it it's not Jason, but now I watch it, and what I think I can safely say is it has an X factor.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: I don't know what it is.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: I'll tell you, you want to know.
- 39:30SPEAKER_00: I can't quantify it, I can't put my finger on it, but it has something that makes you love it.
- 39:35SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna tell you what it is.
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: Okay, it's the foul mouth old lady.
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: Well, she is awesome in there.
- 39:42SPEAKER_01: And her son on the little motorcycle just said right off.
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she steals the show.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: She does, that's true.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: She's pretty funny.
- 39:53SPEAKER_00: Um, but they did give us a hint right from the beginning that this isn't Jason.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: Jason's not back.
- 40:02SPEAKER_00: What's the hint?
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: Do you know?
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: You're a mask guy.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's got he's got the blue chevrons in the street.
- 40:11SPEAKER_01: This is the only movie movies.
- 40:11SPEAKER_01: Which I love that I've got two of those masks.
- 40:13SPEAKER_00: This is the only movie where he has the blue chevrons.
- 40:15SPEAKER_00: And that was them telling us this is not Jason.
- 40:19SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 40:19SPEAKER_00: This is this is a copycat killer.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: And I've heard theories, and this is a pretty cool one, that until the very end, Roy never puts on that hockey mask.
- 40:28SPEAKER_01: Because you never see him with the hockey mask until the third act where he starts doing some serious killing.
- 40:33SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: And supposedly he, this is fan theory, yeah, gets the blue Jason hockey mask from Tommy's back.
- 40:41SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: Okay, I can see that.
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, like you said, that's it's that's just kind of speculation, but it makes sense.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: Makes sense.
- 40:50SPEAKER_00: Okay, part six.
- 40:52SPEAKER_00: This was my favorite for a long time as a kid.
- 40:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, mine too.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: This is the one I watched the most as a kid.
- 40:58SPEAKER_00: I would uh say me too.
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: I would say me too.
- 41:01SPEAKER_00: I loved part six as a kid.
- 41:04SPEAKER_00: Um give me some of your standout moments for part six.
- 41:08SPEAKER_01: It's got well looking back now, that opening, dude, and it's so Frankenstein, isn't it?
- 41:15SPEAKER_01: How he got him back alive, the power of the electricity.
- 41:18SPEAKER_00: The thing that zombifies him.
- 41:19SPEAKER_01: Yes, okay, does and I can even as a kid, I was like, Frankenstein in a sense.
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's right on the nose when it's Frankenstein.
- 41:27SPEAKER_01: And his eyes pump up at him.
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: He hits him with the uh with the metal fence post thing and then leaves it in him, and then the lightning strikes it.
- 41:36SPEAKER_01: And Tommy, I think Tommy makes this movie.
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: He's so good in it, man.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and again, a third actor playing Tommy.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: Tommy, yeah.
- 41:43SPEAKER_00: But this is a totally different Tommy.
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: The Tommy in five was very unsure of himself and very nervous.
- 41:49SPEAKER_01: And and this Tommy's he's this Tommy's like he's gonna send Jason back to hell one way or another.
- 41:54SPEAKER_00: I got a mission, and I'm not gonna leave until this mission is done.
- 41:56SPEAKER_01: And this is like you said, this is when Jason becomes zombie Jason starts it all.
- 42:02SPEAKER_00: Uh, I thought you were gonna talk, but you said uh you said the beginning.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: I thought you were gonna talk about the very beginning, like the opening credits.
- 42:09SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's the which are spoofing James Bond.
- 42:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:13SPEAKER_01: He cuts it with a machete.
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but he's looking like you know, James Bond looks down the barrel of the gun.
- 42:19SPEAKER_00: Jason's looking like through the pupil of the eye, and then he slashes and the blood comes at you.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: It's it's a it's a James Bond.
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: It is homage, sir.
- 42:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, a little homage to James Bond.
- 42:30SPEAKER_00: Um, I remember one of the scenes I loved as a kid was the paintball scene.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, man.
- 42:37SPEAKER_00: When he just kicked all three out.
- 42:40SPEAKER_00: And paintball was a big deal at the time.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: Like there was a movie out called Gotcha.
- 42:47SPEAKER_00: Um, that was a big movie at the time, and paintball just in general, and laser tag, those were like new things culturally that kids were getting into.
- 42:58SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: Um, and so actually, this was a last-minute edition.
- 43:03SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you've read about this or not.
- 43:05SPEAKER_00: They screened the film for the studio, and the studio said, Give me more kills.
- 43:10SPEAKER_00: There's not enough kills.
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: So they went and shot a whole new sequence.
- 43:15SPEAKER_00: I know, like the caretaker git mit that was added, and but all those paintball, you never see them before or after the scene because it they just hand hired a few random actors and got Jason to come out and kill him just to pad the kill count.
- 43:29SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: That was all it was.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: But what do you think about Jason?
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: This and it's played by CJ Graham.
- 43:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, see his only time Jason appearance.
- 43:39SPEAKER_01: But I mean, it's I mean, people love this Jason.
- 43:41SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, he's great.
- 43:43SPEAKER_00: He's he's a little leaner and meaner, I'd say.
- 43:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:47SPEAKER_01: Very unstoppable though, isn't it?
- 43:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, oh yeah, big time.
- 43:50SPEAKER_00: Um a couple other 80s, or one other 80s thing, the paintball thing is a very 80s thing.
- 43:57SPEAKER_00: And uh kind of, like I said, kind of a nod to what was culturally going on at the time, but it's very self-aware.
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: But that's what I mean.
- 44:05SPEAKER_00: Well, part five, I think, kind of started the self-aware meta stuff going a little bit, and six definitely ran with it.
- 44:13SPEAKER_00: But another 80s thing, and I I think of like Dream Warriors when I say this.
- 44:20SPEAKER_00: Um if a horror movie at a certain point in the 80s, a horror movie had to have a good theme song.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: Okay, and this is the one and only time where Jason gets a Alice Cooper?
- 44:32SPEAKER_00: Alice Man Behind the Mask.
- 44:33SPEAKER_00: Yes, sir.
- 44:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I remember that.
- 44:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 44:36SPEAKER_00: They they said, We gotta Jason's gotta have a song.
- 44:38SPEAKER_00: Freddie's got a song, Jason's gotta have a song.
- 44:41SPEAKER_00: So um, they got Alice Cooper, and he did uh he's back, the man behind the mask.
- 44:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, did you know Court, the one that he's driving the RV with his girlfriend and bumping the night?
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: No, that's yeah, that's John Travolter's cousin.
- 44:56SPEAKER_00: I didn't know.
- 44:56SPEAKER_01: I found that out researching that.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: And one of my favorite all-time kills in this whole franchise is where he gets that girl on the bathroom, pushes her face through the mirror and everything, and you see the imprint on the other side.
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I just think that's the coolest thing.
- 45:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, in the bathroom in the RV.
- 45:11SPEAKER_00: But yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 45:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 45:14SPEAKER_00: Uh, one last thing about six.
- 45:15SPEAKER_00: Well, I've told you one of my favorite images of um Jason ever lake is him being chained in the bottom of the lake.
- 45:24SPEAKER_01: So and you know that was filmed in the we've talked about this.
- 45:27SPEAKER_01: A lot of people don't know it.
- 45:28SPEAKER_01: If you watch the very ending, that that was filmed at Tom McHowff.
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: McLaughlin.
- 45:33SPEAKER_01: McLaughlin and his parents or his place in the swimming pool.
- 45:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 45:39SPEAKER_00: Um one lot more thing.
- 45:42SPEAKER_00: There's a deleted scene in part six, which gives you Jason's dad's name.
- 45:48SPEAKER_00: Elias.
- 45:49SPEAKER_00: Elias.
- 45:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:50SPEAKER_00: I wish they would have gone with that.
- 45:51SPEAKER_00: Well, they do call back to it in a in a future movie.
- 45:55SPEAKER_00: I can't remember which part it was, but they do say his mom and dad, Pamela and Elias.
- 46:01SPEAKER_00: Eliza.
- 46:02SPEAKER_00: It might have been uh it might have been Jason Goes to Hell.
- 46:07SPEAKER_00: Um, or maybe Jason X.
- 46:09SPEAKER_01: But they're Jason X.
- 46:10SPEAKER_00: They call back to so they do say it, but um, this is the first time that they name his dad if if you watch the deleted scene.
- 46:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 46:18SPEAKER_00: So that was six, and six was, like I said, one of my favorites.
- 46:23SPEAKER_00: Now that I've rewatched them all, uh, I still love it, but it's it's I wouldn't put it up there with best of the best.
- 46:30SPEAKER_01: You wouldn't.
- 46:31SPEAKER_00: No, no, I don't.
- 46:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, I like it a lot.
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: Because I want your ranking of your top, your top three at least when we're done.
- 46:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
- 46:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, so I would say part six is outside of my top three, but not by much.
- 46:42SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 46:43SPEAKER_00: Not by much.
- 46:44SPEAKER_00: Hey there, horror fans.
- 46:46SPEAKER_00: We're gonna pause right here and call that the end of part one.
- 46:50SPEAKER_00: Uh join us next week for part two, and we will finish up the Friday the 13th franchise.
- 46:57SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening.
- 46:59SPEAKER_00: And uh go watch the first six now that you've heard our talking points.
- 47:04SPEAKER_00: Let us know what you have to say.
- 47:06SPEAKER_00: And please come back next time for another episode of Haunted Ozark Theater.
- 47:11SPEAKER_00: Thanks.
- 47:11SPEAKER_00: Bye.
