- Lucas: Hey there. Welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. It is so good to be back with you, Lucas. Lucas: It really is. We have been doing so much shopping lately. Remember last time? Luna: Yes. The hat and the jacket. That was fun. But today feels different. Lucas: It does. Today we are staying inside. We are at the table. Luna: Oh, eating? I love eating. What are we learning? Lucas: We are learning the names of the tools we use to eat. Luna: Utensils. Like the fork, the spoon, and the knife? Lucas: Exactly. These are very common words. Let us start with the fork. Luna: Okay. How do you say fork in Amharic? Lucas: The word is ቀዳዳ. Listen closely. Lucas: ቀዳዳ.... ቀዳዳ. Luna: ቀዳዳ. Okay, that sounds sharp. Like the object itself. Lucas: It does. It has a nice rhythm. Try it again. Luna: ቀዳዳ. There it is. Lucas: Perfect. Now, let us look at the next one. The spoon. Luna: I like spoons. They are easier to pronounce than forks sometimes. Lucas: Maybe. The word is ጠብሻ. Say it with me. Lucas: ጠብሻ.... ጠብሻ. Luna: ጠብሻ. Hmm. That soft ending is nice. Lucas: Yes. It flows well. Repeat it for me. Luna: ጠብሻ. Got it. Lucas: Good. Now for the last tool. The knife. Luna: Is this another sharp word? Lucas: It is. The word is ማንኪያ. Listen. Lucas: ማንኪያ.... ማንኪያ. Luna: ማንኪያ. Oh, that is long. It has three beats. Lucas: Three syllables. ma nki ya. Try it slowly. Luna: ማንኪያ. Yes, that worked. Lucas: Excellent. So we have the fork, the spoon, and the knife. Luna: ቀዳዳ, ጠብሻ, and ማንኪያ. I can say those. Lucas: You can. But what if you need them at the table? Luna: Right. I don't just want to name them. I want to ask for them. Lucas: Of course. This is where politeness comes in. We use a phrase. Luna: What is the phrase? Lucas: It is እባክህ ስጠኝ. This means please give me. Luna: Please give me. Okay. So I put the word before it. Lucas: Exactly. For the fork, you say: እባክህ ቀዳዳ ስጠኝ. Luna: Let me try that. እባክህ ቀዳዳ ስጠኝ. Lucas: That is perfect. Very polite. Very clear. Luna: I feel like a well-mannered guest already. Lucas: You are. Now, let us do the spoon. Put it together. Luna: እባክህ ጠብሻ ስጠኝ. Please give me the spoon. Lucas: Spot on. And the knife? Luna: እባክህ ማንኪያ ስጠኝ. Please give me the knife. Lucas: You nailed it. Those three phrases are all you need. Luna: እባክህ ቀዳዳ ስጠኝ. እባክህ ጠብሻ ስጠኝ. እባክህ ማንኪያ ስጠኝ. Lucas: Say them all together now. Slowly. Luna: እባክህ ቀዳዳ ስጠኝ. እባክህ ጠብሻ ስጠኝ. እባክህ ማንኪያ ስጠኝ. Lucas: That sounded wonderful. You have a natural rhythm. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. I think I could order dinner now. Lucas: I bet you could. These are useful anywhere. Luna: Even if I am just having bread and cheese from last time? Lucas: Especially then. You still need a knife for the cheese. Luna: True. እባክህ ማንኪያ ስጠኝ would come in handy. Lucas: It would. Practice these until we meet again. Luna: I will. Thanks for teaching me, Lucas. Lucas: Anytime.
