- 0:00Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:03daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:07from social media, the creator economy and the digital space
- 0:10every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:22And today is actually a Centennial World's fifth
- 0:27birthday. You guys, I've officially been
- 0:29running this company for half a decade, five years.
- 0:33So for anyone that is new and you want to hear like the lore
- 0:36of this podcast, go back and listen to the Q&A that I did a
- 0:40couple of months ago now because I explained like the structure.
- 0:44But basically this podcast lives underneath a greater media brand
- 0:49that I own called Centennial World.
- 0:51And for the first like three to four years, I would say we
- 0:55really prioritized our publication like our written
- 0:59work. That was kind of our bread and
- 1:00butter. We came from journalism
- 1:02backgrounds, writing backgrounds, but then in the
- 1:04last year, we kind of decided that we needed to take a step
- 1:08back from the written work. You know what, that's still
- 1:10important. And you know, it's always going
- 1:12to have like a place in my heart, the website, because that
- 1:15was like my first baby within the brand, I would say.
- 1:18But we found it didn't matter how much traffic we got on site.
- 1:23It didn't matter how much recognition we were getting by
- 1:27getting, you know, amazing link backs or citations in different
- 1:32mainstream publications, It didn't actually impact our
- 1:35audience growth and our revenue. So audience growth, meaning
- 1:39people that were coming to us specifically as opposed to just
- 1:43like Googling someones name and being like what's going on
- 1:46between these two Youtubers reading the article and clicking
- 1:49out. We knew we needed to prioritize
- 1:51different channels that foster that kind of like community feel
- 1:55and grew that like culty audience as opposed to just like
- 1:58getting traffic. And brands honestly just did not
- 2:01care about working with us on site.
- 2:03So that's why I started the daily podcast this year because
- 2:07we knew that taking the news that we were publishing on our
- 2:10website and bringing it to a podcast format every single day
- 2:13instead, that was going to pay off.
- 2:15And it definitely has. OK, let's get into the stories
- 2:20for today, the last Monday of mini scrolling.
- 2:24I'm going to say that every single fucking day.
- 2:26Not ever, not ever. I'm going to say that every day
- 2:28this week, the last Monday of mini scroll of 2024, the last
- 2:32Tuesday. But honestly, like this is the
- 2:34first year of mini scroll. This is my first year of doing a
- 2:36daily podcast. I can't believe I've done a
- 2:38daily podcast basically the whole year.
- 2:41So I'm just kind of like basking in this accomplishment.
- 2:44OK, so the first story that I have for you guys is I'm going
- 2:48to break down the Matilda Durf and Durf Ave. allegations that
- 2:52have been going viral everywhere all weekend.
- 2:55Late last week, which was the weekend here in Australia for
- 2:58us, the Swedish publication Aftonbladette published
- 3:03essentially like a documentary featuring several former
- 3:07employees of Matilda Durf's fashion brand Durf Ave., in
- 3:11which they claimed that Matilda fostered a toxic work
- 3:15environment through bullying and a lack of respect for her team.
- 3:18So amongst the allegations, one employee called Matilda's
- 3:21behavior to her staff, quote, psychological terror.
- 3:25Another said, quote, there are times when she has lined up the
- 3:28employees and yelled at them and said how bad they are at their
- 3:31job. One of the biggest allegations
- 3:33to come out of this is that Matilda had her own private
- 3:36bathroom that she and a few select favorite employees were
- 3:39allowed to use. There was a sign on it basically
- 3:42on the door that said don't use this.
- 3:44One day apparently the sign fell, someone used it and
- 3:48Matilda made that person like that employee scrub that toilet
- 3:51allegedly as a punishment for them using her toilet.
- 3:55There's also allegations that Matilda fat shamed a model
- 3:57during a photo shoot and also staff quote.
- 4:01To one person she said her butt didn't fill out the jeans and to
- 4:04another she said that her butt filled up the jeans too much.
- 4:07I've seen a lot of people, this happens every time there's any
- 4:10type of allegations like this against somebody who is like
- 4:13previously beloved people are like, I always knew, I always
- 4:17got such a bad feeling about and it's like, did you?
- 4:20That's not really relevant to like what is currently
- 4:23unfolding, you know? But I think when it does come to
- 4:27this situation, what I will say is I've seen a lot of people
- 4:31talk about how this kind of environment is very common
- 4:35amongst especially smaller fashion brands with a founder at
- 4:38the helm. I think fashion, beauty, even
- 4:41media, you know, are like really sought PR are really sought
- 4:45after industries, industries sought, sought, sought after
- 4:49industries that young women especially want to work in.
- 4:53They're very glamorized. And so you can kind of get these
- 4:58companies, these smaller companies, these like boutique,
- 5:01you know, type of brands that are run like this because I
- 5:05think sometimes that goes to the founder's head.
- 5:08It's kind of like the Devil Wears Prada where she's like a
- 5:11million girls would kill to be in your shoes, like a million
- 5:14girls would kill to work here. And so I think that attitude is
- 5:17very common in those industries, especially when there is like 1
- 5:21central person who is driving the ship.
- 5:24And in their mind, probably like the reason why all of these
- 5:27employees have their salaries and can pay their rent and their
- 5:31mortgages and like have this lifestyle.
- 5:34And also, I'm sure some of those employees are starting to build
- 5:36their own like platforms off the back of working for Matilda and
- 5:41stuff. So I imagine there is just like
- 5:43a lot of inflated egos with some founders who are at the helm of
- 5:48these brands who really feel like you wouldn't be here
- 5:51without me. This is my brand, this is my
- 5:53face. You know, this like I'm the
- 5:55reason for all of this, I imagine.
- 5:57And then just from like an influencer perspective, I mean,
- 6:00we see this a lot. Like Matilda did have a
- 6:03reputation of being really nice, of having kind of inclusive
- 6:08values. You know, she went semi viral
- 6:11maybe a couple years ago, I forget when it was where she was
- 6:14talking about how she gets invited to Fashion Week all the
- 6:17time, but she never goes because until they're more inclusive,
- 6:20she's not going to, you know, sit front row and kind of put
- 6:23her stamp of approval on that. So she kind of built this
- 6:28reputation around herself. And when you do build a
- 6:31reputation for yourself of being this like amazing influence,
- 6:37this really like ethical influencer in theory, then you
- 6:40know you have farther to fall. OK, so Matilda has responded.
- 6:44So she made a statement to the publication and she also
- 6:47commented, I believe on their Instagram post.
- 6:49I think it was theirs, she wrote.
- 6:51I don't recognize myself in the claims that have been made and
- 6:54I've chosen not to comment on individual cases.
- 6:57However, I do believe it's valuable that these concerns are
- 6:59being raised as it gives both me and Jerf Ave. the opportunity to
- 7:03grow and improve. I want to emphasize that I take
- 7:06full responsibility and see this as a chance to reflect, grow and
- 7:09contribute to a better culture for everyone at Jeff Ave.
- 7:13And then Jeff Avenues chief operating officer said the
- 7:16company acknowledged the challenges it is workplace
- 7:19environment and had taken steps to address them.
- 7:21And then she actually like wrote out a whole list of the steps
- 7:25that they're doing. Some of these steps include
- 7:28implementing an independent whistleblower function,
- 7:31strengthening the management team, and carrying out an
- 7:33independent workplace assessment investment with an external
- 7:36psychologist. So I will say that anytime
- 7:40there's been kind of mass criticism around Jeff Ave. or
- 7:44Matilda, she never shies away from addressing it.
- 7:47The company always makes a statement.
- 7:49They don't just ignore and they do it quick, like they do it
- 7:51within the same day. Same thing happened when she was
- 7:54getting all that backlash like this, or maybe was this time
- 7:57last year, earlier this year when she was copyright striking
- 8:01allegedly. I think it was like what's it?
- 8:04Oh my God, what's she doing? She was copy yes, that was it.
- 8:06She was copyright striking allegedly creators, like small
- 8:10creators who were sharing dupes. I think of Jeff Ave. close
- 8:14anyway, so you know, they made a statement right away.
- 8:17They were like I emailed them, yes.
- 8:19It was because we were still really writing on site.
- 8:21So it would have been around this time last year.
- 8:23Like I emailed them for a statement and they got back to
- 8:25me like right away. So they are very good at
- 8:29managing the PR around the brand and the PR around Matilda.
- 8:33And I do appreciate that she didn't just deny everything.
- 8:36There was absolutely an element of acknowledgement there.
- 8:39OK. So now many former fans are
- 8:42calling on influencer Philippa Mullier to speak out.
- 8:46So for anyone that doesn't know, Philippa has an influencer who
- 8:49briefly worked for Jeff Ave. as a social media coordinator from
- 8:53June, no, January 2022, sorry, to October 2022.
- 8:58And I guess before she worked there, like Matilda and her were
- 9:01like in each other's comments all the time, like always
- 9:04interacting. And then it just kind of she
- 9:07left the company abruptly. Nobody has any idea why.
- 9:11There was like very little said about it.
- 9:13And then they basically don't seem to interact.
- 9:16So everyone's like, what does she know?
- 9:18Like we need to know what's going on here.
- 9:21She probably has something to say.
- 9:24So she actually made a statement, a very small one, but
- 9:27she made a statement. So a TikTok creator was posting
- 9:30about this and about Philippa and Matilda and this whole like
- 9:34workplacing that came out and she commented on that video she
- 9:38wrote meep. This whole situation is so hard
- 9:40for me to talk about honestly and I just think I need some
- 9:43more time to reflect before addressing it.
- 9:46So it does sound like Philippa has some not so nice things to
- 9:50say about working at your Ave. I don't know if she'll ever
- 9:53actually come out and say it, but it sounds like she might be
- 9:57open to it. OK, the next story that I have
- 9:59for you guys is I wanted to talk really quickly about this songs
- 10:02I'd play if trend. So I don't know if this is
- 10:06taking over your for you page like it is everyone on my teams
- 10:10for you page. But there's this new TikTok
- 10:12trend sweeping the app where basically people are taking a
- 10:15photo of like a niche business or like a niche place and
- 10:19writing quote songs I'd play if I owned a XYZ company or songs
- 10:25I'd play if I was in XYZ place featuring a sound that has very
- 10:30pointed lyrics and it's supposed to be funny.
- 10:33I'm going to say a lot of them are a little bit like edgy and
- 10:37kind of savage, these BB hills killing y'all.
- 10:44But this could be done really well if you're a business.
- 10:49So for example, you could put up like a picture of let's say
- 10:53Goodwill with the text songs I'd play if I owned a Goodwill or
- 10:57songs I'd play if I worked at Goodwill or whatever.
- 10:59And the song playing could be Thrift Shop by Macklemore.
- 11:03Or if you owned an alcohol brand, worked for an alcohol
- 11:06brand, you could put like songs I'd play if I owned a liquor
- 11:09brand or worked at a liquor brand.
- 11:11And this song could be shot, shot shots by LMFAO, stuff like
- 11:14that. So it's really quick.
- 11:16But you know, like I said, some of them are a little bit savage,
- 11:19but if you just are careful with what you post, I think this
- 11:22could be really funny. Okay, and the last story that I
- 11:25have for you guys, I was tossing up between this one and the
- 11:29Selena Gomez one where that actor called her out and call
- 11:33her up, but like criticized her Spanish accent in the new movie
- 11:38Amelia Perez, I think it's called.
- 11:40And then Selena commented about it and then he apologized.
- 11:43That's honestly just actually the gist of the story.
- 11:45But anyways, I decided to go with this one instead.
- 11:48I guess I gave you guys the rundown of that one too.
- 11:51OK, so this where I have for you guys last story is Sofia Culpo
- 11:55has shaded Alex Earl and Braxton Barrios.
- 11:59So Sofia Culpo has called out Braxton Barrios once again for
- 12:03how he treated her in their relationship.
- 12:06Brianna chicken fries. I somehow involved in the story.
- 12:09Always can't do an episode without talking about her.
- 12:11I swear. Was on Alex Earl's podcast
- 12:13talking about her abusive relationship with Zac Bryan.
- 12:17This podcast was picked up by a lot of pop culture TikTok
- 12:20accounts, including one where the creator named Stephanie said
- 12:24in her recap video that Zac Bryan is to Brianna as Braxton
- 12:29Berrius is to Sofia Culpo. Are you sticking with me?
- 12:33So like, a TikTok creator made that comparison.
- 12:36OK, so in case you missed it, Sophia is the influencer who
- 12:40dated Braxton for two years before Alex.
- 12:43They lived together in New Jersey, apparently.
- 12:45And there were also questions when they broke up around if
- 12:49there was overlap between Alex and Sophia.
- 12:52There's lots of rumors that Braxton cheated on Sophia with
- 12:55Alex. And even though Alex has kind of
- 12:59like denied those rumors, Sophia has always kind of maintained
- 13:04this. I wouldn't say she's like
- 13:06necessarily come out and like said it, but she's always
- 13:10heavily implied it in a lot of the content that she's created
- 13:13around this relationship, like around her past relationship.
- 13:16And she was actually on a podcast, I think it was earlier
- 13:18this year, and she was talking about how like Braxton was a
- 13:21really controlling boyfriend. So I think that's why Stephanie,
- 13:24the TikTok creator, made that comparison because she was
- 13:27basically saying, like, from what Sophia has told us about
- 13:29her relationship with Braxton, it sounds like there were
- 13:32similarities between how Braxton treated Sophia and how Brianna
- 13:36says Zac treated her. OK, so Sophia saw this TikTok
- 13:40from Stephanie comparing the two and she stitched it.
- 13:45In the stitch, Sophia looked at the camera and took like a big
- 13:48sip of wine. If you guys remember, Braxton
- 13:51was technically Sophia Kolpo's Zac Bryant.
- 14:00This is obviously a hark back to the response that Zac Bryan's ex
- 14:05Deb gave when Brianna came out about Zac's abusive
- 14:08relationship. Brianna came out about his
- 14:10abuse. The first thing that Deb posted
- 14:12after that was like basically a copy and paste of this video
- 14:16from Sophia. And I actually chose the story
- 14:18because it felt lighter, even though it's actually like, not
- 14:21light subject matter. But in terms of like the
- 14:23commentary, I'm going to say it seems like Braxton really fucked
- 14:28Sophia up. Like really, the way that he
- 14:31treated her, the way that their relationship ended, she's
- 14:33obviously still very hurt by it, understandably so.
- 14:37But I wanted to choose this story instead of the Selena
- 14:40Gomez story because I kind of felt like with the Selena Gomez
- 14:42story, I needed to dissect more of the conversation around the
- 14:48criticism of art and like who's allowed to criticize and
- 14:52industry peers giving each other feedback and criticizing each
- 14:56other. And if that is still valid in
- 15:00every single industry, when you are so famous and you're sitting
- 15:04on a giant platform giving criticism about a peer versus,
- 15:09you know, other industries where you might give each other like
- 15:12peer-to-peer feedback, peer-to-peer criticism, But it's
- 15:15not amplified to the degree that someone who is a peer of Selena
- 15:20Gomez, like, he's sitting on a giant podcast saying that.
- 15:23So anyways, that just felt like a much bigger conversation where
- 15:28I would really need to have a lot of time and space to dissect
- 15:33how I felt about all of that because I know it's a bigger
- 15:35conversation. So that's why I wanted to do
- 15:37this story. But I guess I've kind of done
- 15:39both now. Anyways, that's it for many
- 15:41scroll today guys. I'm really excited because right
- 15:44after this, I am recording the final deep dive of the year and
- 15:48I'm recording it with my team. I'm recording it with Alex and
- 15:52Annabelle. Sadly, Danny is away.
- 15:54As you guys know, I've been on the editing grind.
- 15:56She is on a trip, so I've been editing the podcast while she's
- 15:59away. But yes, so Alex and Annabelle
- 16:02are going to do the podcast with me and you guys have been asking
- 16:05to meet them to get to know them a little bit better.
- 16:07So I'm excited because they're going to join me.
