- 0:00The following program is produced by the Tech Talk Radio Network. Hey everybody,
- 0:04this is Jim Peterick of The IDEs of March, formerly with Survivor in a
- 0:08thirty eight special Faith, and you're listening to tech Talk Radio. Welcome to
- 0:15another episode of tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Seanda Weird,
- 0:19and I'm justin Lemme. Man. Has it been a busy week in tech
- 0:22There's been so much stuff going on. You guys been following, and it's
- 0:26been it's been hot. So I'm grateful for the technology of air conditioning.
- 0:31All right, So for those who don't know, you know, we're we're
- 0:34talking about heat. And yes, you know one hundred and eleven yesterday,
- 0:38monsoon storms have started here in southern Arizona, justin I'm sure you remember those.
- 0:42Oh yeah, So I thought those don't come till like August. Now
- 0:45we generally they'll start. Sometimes they'll start as early as May, and then
- 0:50monsoon season officially began last Saturday. Now they kind of just kind of roll
- 0:55in, and it all depends on what's going on down in Mexico. That
- 1:00stuff kind of moves its way up. But we've been dealing with the heat
- 1:03and Joshan, who I know is in Indiana, is telling me how hot
- 1:07it is there, and I'm thinking, how do you deal with it?
- 1:11It's not where you're supposed to have heat like that. It gets this hot
- 1:15during the summer. But it's just it was it's so humid. Yeah,
- 1:19it's an eighty ninety degree humid, ninety percent humidity. You walk outside and
- 1:25you're instantly sweating. It's just it's it's uncomfortable to be outside. It's not
- 1:30a dry heat like you guys have down there in Arizona, where it's like
- 1:33you go outside for a couple of minutes, you're fine. It's like you're
- 1:36walking into a wall of moist air. It's hot, and it was.
- 1:42It was ninety degrees yesterday and it got us. I don't think it got
- 1:47below eighty five overnight last night, so it stayed hot all night yesterday and
- 1:51then was back up into the mid nineties today. Oh man, I think
- 1:55it's It is currently eighty degrees out right now. It's ten ten pm and
- 1:59it's eighty still eighty degrees outside. We've had the past few days here in
- 2:02Denver, it's been like ninety two, ninety five, ninety seven, but
- 2:07then today was a nice refresher because of the high temperature was seventy two.
- 2:12Oh man, and that relief. Oh yeah, I don't get something.
- 2:15So I have a house in honey To Beach, and the house in honey
- 2:17To Beach, I mean it's by the beach. Well, we're about maybe
- 2:21fifteen minutes away from the beach. So never ever thought about putting You know,
- 2:24my parents didn't have air conditioning when they had the house, and we
- 2:29never thought about putting AC into my kids who lives in the house of saying
- 2:32dad, can you please invest in an AC system? Can you please get
- 2:37air conditioning because it's starting to get and it is it's like ninety degrees eighty
- 2:42five degrees without AC. I can't even imagine that traditional AC system's gonna it's
- 2:47gonna set you back quite a penny, like you said. But you know,
- 2:52they got these the split units now and they're a lot more affordable.
- 2:55I mean, we've had split units in Japan ever since I was, you
- 2:59know, back in the Navy, back in two thousand and three. I
- 3:01mean they've had split units in Japan since the nineteen eighties. That's what they
- 3:06use. I mean in Japan, they don't heat their entire house. They
- 3:08don't have what we call central air, right you know, where we have
- 3:13one system that does the whole house. They just they only heat and cool
- 3:15the rooms that they're in at that moment. And so they have split units
- 3:21basically all over the house. So you know now that that America's finally got
- 3:24these, I mean they're they're pretty affordable. I mean, I was looking
- 3:28at getting some split units for our house here in Denver at one point,
- 3:30and I think I saw something on Lows. It was like it was like
- 3:35three indoor split units with two exterior units, and I think the whole thing
- 3:42was like thirty five hundred or maybe it was five five hundred dollars. And
- 3:46you can also do those yourself because they're pretty much all self contained. All
- 3:50you gotta do is just cut a hole through your wall, seal it up
- 3:53with some you know, cock or some weather sealant, and you know,
- 3:55just fish the fish the pipes through it, hook them up the outdoor unit,
- 4:00and bam, you're all set. How do you have air conditioning out
- 4:04there in Indiana, Sean? Is it like you have, is it built
- 4:08it in the house or do you have splits central area. You know,
- 4:10it's it's central air. We have one unit that serves a little house nice,
- 4:14so it's it does a good job. I mean our house is twenty
- 4:18plus six hundred square feet or something like that, and it does a good
- 4:21job. The only downside is that the west side of our house is pretty
- 4:28exposed, so sixty to seventy percent of the day it's it's getting hit by
- 4:33the sun. Right so it it's seventy two degrees on the main floor,
- 4:39but it could be eighty four degrees on this on the in Max's room because
- 4:44the sun's just been beating on it all day. That's that's what that's the
- 4:46problem we have here in Colorado too, these houses, I mean the house
- 4:49I live in, and all of our neighbors this is the same thing.
- 4:51I mean, we've most people have just one central air unit, and there
- 4:57could be a massive difference in between your basement, your main floor, and
- 5:00your upper floor. I mean, basement's probably sitting around right now, My
- 5:04base's probably sitting around seventy. Main floors around seventy three, seventy four,
- 5:10but the upstairs is like, you know, seventy eight, seventy nine.
- 5:13Wow. Instead of getting a split in it, I got. I just
- 5:15got like a portable AC and so we put that up in our master bedroom
- 5:23during the summertime. And the only downside of that is, you know,
- 5:27it draws a lot of amps, you know, so it increases the power
- 5:30a lot, and it can cool down that upstairs super super quick. Right,
- 5:34but when it kicks on, I mean, so you can't have it
- 5:38like where the fan will just constantly run to give that nice you know,
- 5:42overnight white noise. No, it's like it'll cool and then it will shut
- 5:46off, and then when it kicks on, it's like no, right,
- 5:50you know, so it's like whoa, and it wakes you up at night,
- 5:53you know, so that that kind of sucks. But yeah, you
- 5:56know, we still get to the point where we can usually keep our windows
- 5:59open at night during this Now what is it? What is the optimum temperature?
- 6:01And and I'm kind of wondering we haven't touched on swamp coolers. You
- 6:05know, swamp coolers were big out here where you know, it's kind of
- 6:09water that's used to cool But somebody once told me, if you have a
- 6:13lot of electronics computers that kind of thing, that it's really not good because
- 6:17it puts more moisture in the air. Well. That's that's the exact that's
- 6:20the exact definition of a swamp cooler. It's the exact opposite of an air
- 6:24conditioner. I mean, air conditioner takes humidity out of your air. Swamp
- 6:30coolers put humidity back in. Now just moves cooler air, which is yeah
- 6:34cool. Yeah. Granted, swamp coolers are extremely better, much extremely better
- 6:42at cooling a room down because you're putting that moisture in air to carry that
- 6:47cold air with it. But yeah, you're right. If you've got a
- 6:49lot of electronics, swamp coolers are not the right thing for you. Probably,
- 6:54Yeah, that probably would not be that that great. The other thing
- 6:57is, you know, keeping the the you want to keep your technology kind
- 7:00of cool. Like Sean, what you mentioned about your house being on you
- 7:04know, one in the West End, that's exactly what I'm in the West
- 7:08Side gets all the light, and that's what the studio is. I'm thinking
- 7:12one day I'm gonna look like Robert Hayes from the movie Airplane when he's sweating.
- 7:15You know, That's what I'm gonna be like on the camera. But
- 7:17I thought you were I seriously thought you were going to say, you're gonna
- 7:20look like two Face from Dark Knight or the guy from Raiders the Lost Ark
- 7:26his face melts. Yeah, yeah, yeah, But that's something else you
- 7:30got to think about too. If you know, you want to keep someone,
- 7:32if you've got the electronics you've got him on, they're generating heat if
- 7:38they're not getting that kind of airflow. The worst thing I remember when computers
- 7:42were really becoming popular, people wanted to hide them, so they put them
- 7:46in cabinets and then they would close the door, and people always wondered,
- 7:50you know, why the computer was either a making so much noise or b
- 7:55not performing well. You move the mouse, it would take a while because
- 7:58they were overheating. And just like us as humans, our computers can overheat
- 8:03too, which is not good. All this talk about air conditioning and stuff
- 8:07like that. I mean, with all the problems that I've recently had with
- 8:11you know, my basement flooding, and you know, going through this remodel
- 8:15and stuff, you know, I've done a lot of thinking. You know,
- 8:18again, my family's gone, I'm just sitting at home doing nothing,
- 8:20right, I'm just doing a lot of thinking. Yeah, and I've come
- 8:22to the conclusion that I really just need to learn how to do basic home
- 8:28repair because you know, my house is ten years old. I shouldn't have
- 8:33to think about it right yet because it's only ten years. But the thing
- 8:37is is, the truth of the matter is that these houses are not constructed
- 8:41to the quality that they used to be, you know, back in the
- 8:43day. They're just they're they turn these things out within months instead of a
- 8:50good part of a year, you know, like you can build. These
- 8:52people build houses. I just watched a town home, no, a triple,
- 8:56it was a what do you call that? Not a dupe try plex.
- 9:01I just witnessed a triplex go from foundation to fully open for tours in
- 9:07the course of three months. Three months. Wow, a triplex, Right,
- 9:11this is ridiculous the turnaround and they're, oh, no, we got
- 9:15a lot of staff. No, you don't know, you're using your cutting
- 9:18corners, you're doing cheap materials, you're doing these things as fast as it
- 9:22possibly can. So therefore the houses. Instead of these houses lasting fifty to
- 9:26one hundred years, they're lasting ten to twenty years. And so I've come
- 9:31to the conclusion that I need to learn how to do this basic home repair.
- 9:35And it's funny that we're talking about air conditioning because these last two nights,
- 9:41I've actually spent a considerable amount of time watching YouTube videos on how to
- 9:46clean you know, HVAC units, looking up my particular model, looking up
- 9:52other models. You know, how to flush a water heater, how to
- 9:58clean the coils of your h VAC unit, how to put refrigerant in your
- 10:05condenser coils if they need to, like all that stuff like, and it's
- 10:11kind of interesting to me a little bit. I don't know. I mean,
- 10:16you know, to each their own, but I've just found that these
- 10:18videos are interesting and informative, and I'm like, man, I just I
- 10:22need to learn how to do this because I can't afford to have a guy
- 10:26come out every every single time and you know, five hundred dollars here,
- 10:30one thousand dollars there, Yeah, you know, five thousand dollars if you
- 10:33want to get a refrigerant put back in. The guy that I just watched
- 10:35the video right before we joined this show, right before I came down and
- 10:39started talking to you guys, watch the guy do this refrigerant. First thing
- 10:41out of his mind was, well, how can I do this? If
- 10:43I can't get refrigerant because technically a consumer cannot buy refrigerant. You have to
- 10:50be a licensed oh contractor. But there's websites out there, like he even
- 10:54sort of like all you have to do is go to the website you can
- 10:58buy the refrigerant cans and there's a little checkbox that says I'm a licensed contractor.
- 11:03Click that and bam, now you can get your refrigerant. Wow.
- 11:05Like, it's not that hard and as long as you know what you're doing
- 11:09with it, you know. And so this video just taught me how to
- 11:13add refrigerant. Now. Granted I probably don't need to because you only need
- 11:16to do that if you have a leak, but it's good knowledge to have.
- 11:20Yeah. Yeah, do you find like when you're doing a search for
- 11:24something like and I've done it before too. I mean I had to replace
- 11:26a garbage dispuzzle. Not the easiest thing in the world. But you know,
- 11:30when you're when you're completely blue and you have no idea, like what
- 11:33do I do? Going to YouTube and finding a video can be a lifesaver
- 11:41and a step by step. Do you search normally on Google or do you
- 11:45do like just go to YouTube just search for the model number, and then
- 11:48what you want to do. I go straight to YouTube and do that,
- 11:50because I mean, there is literally a video for everything. I mean.
- 11:54I recently replaced our gasket on our front loader washer and I had no idea
- 12:03how to do it. And I found a video with my exact model of
- 12:07washer, and it walked me through step by step, remove this bolt,
- 12:09pull this pin, disconnect this wire, take off the front plight, blah
- 12:15blah blah. Done. I had a dishwasher. I had a frigidaire dishwasher,
- 12:22and well, there's a problem. So the but the button's quite working.
- 12:30You would just flash, right. So I went to YouTube typed in
- 12:33the model and it said this is the problem. The buttons get moisture in
- 12:37them and they go bad. And it senses that a button. It basically
- 12:39thinks of buttons being pressed down the whole time. Here's how you replace the
- 12:43panel. Go to this website, pay the one hundred dollars, get the
- 12:46new panel, put it in. Yeah, four screws later, my dishwasher
- 12:50was working again. Yeah. Nice. See And it makes you feel good.
- 12:54Yeah yeah, when you do that yourself and you can be like,
- 12:56you know what, I didn't have to hire somebody to do that. I
- 13:00feel like Tim the tool Man Taylor. Now, should you read? Should
- 13:05you read the comments though that are in there, because I've always found I
- 13:09like to read because because sometimes somebody will get on there and go, this
- 13:11is completely wrong, or this won't do this, or you know, people
- 13:16believe believe reviews based on that video of what you're learning how to do.
- 13:20Well, yeah, you have to. You have to still have to do
- 13:22your due diligence. You can't just be like, oh, yeah this this
- 13:24Joe Schmoe knows exactly what he's doing. Now, you have to still do
- 13:28your due diligence and make sure you are following somebody that has the reputation of
- 13:33knowing home repair or has a large following or something. There is there is
- 13:39that what Shawn is saying is absolutely correct. But what I do like about
- 13:43YouTube now is that they've also given the creators the ability to re upload or
- 13:48edit their videos without losing you know, that video's statistics. So like,
- 13:54if they've got like a million views, obviously that video, that video is
- 13:56gonna pop up, you know, before any other video. But if that
- 14:01video happens to have some incorrect information, YouTube gives the creator ability to like
- 14:05put like an addendum at the beginning saying, hey, we made a mistake
- 14:09here at this point you bl blah blah blah, and here's how to correct
- 14:13that. But for the most part, I mean, yeah, I'll read
- 14:15a little bit of the comments, and a lot of them are just most
- 14:16like, oh my god, you just saved me seven hundred dollars, Thank
- 14:20you so much, you know, and stuff like that. So that's it's
- 14:22awesome that you know I can do that, and it's it's it is funny
- 14:28how after doing these videos, after the last couple of days of just watching
- 14:31home improvement, it's funny to watch how the algorithm of YouTube changes a yeah,
- 14:37because now it just constantly serves me more home repair home construction DIY videos,
- 14:46right, because it knows you're you're looking at it because something you want
- 14:50processes yeah, and this is what you Oh, we we know that you
- 14:52want to watch this instead of funny cat videos and stuff now and now we're
- 14:58showing you funny cats fixing things at home. That's what it is. Boy,
- 15:03you can do anything with AI. Now you got to think about that.
- 15:07And you know that's Adobe has been in the news. We talked about
- 15:09this last week about them being in the news with the idea that people were
- 15:16upset because the terms of services have changed. Now they're under fire from the
- 15:22US government, the Federal Trade Commission. It will be ensued, Yeah,
- 15:26because they're seeing making it too hard to cancel an online subscription. Now,
- 15:31in the old days, I go back to all this photostyler where and I
- 15:35have my original discs, you know, and then you know, it became
- 15:37Adobe Photoshop and you had discs. You would install it and you could use
- 15:43it for a couple of years and the new version would come out. You
- 15:46would spend the money on that or maybe buy an upgrade after I want to
- 15:52say, the CS Master Suite five to five, maybe six, I'm not
- 15:56sure. But they made it so that, oh, now it's online,
- 16:00and now it's a subscription. So every year, you know, you pay
- 16:03X amount of dollars and you would get updates and or maybe even midyear you
- 16:07might get an update for a program. They found a new way to make
- 16:10something work. Well. The people now that are doing the subscription based are
- 16:15finding that they get to a point thinking, okay, I'm going to cancel.
- 16:18They're having a hard time canceling. Yeah, and it's it's not like
- 16:23you know, you and me calling up the cable company and saying, well,
- 16:26we want to cancel service. They will try and talk you out of
- 16:29it. They'll offer you some benefits if you stay with them. In this
- 16:33case, they're making it so it's kind of hidden from what most people are
- 16:37saying. Well, what they don't They want you to get frustrated. They
- 16:41want you to not be able to find it, so then you have to
- 16:44go and google it or search for it. They don't want they don't want,
- 16:47well it to be easy, because they would lose more people that way.
- 16:51It's not just that though, it's not just the fact of making it
- 16:52hard to find how to cancel. What they're doing, Oh oh you want
- 16:56to cancel. Oh well then you're going to have to pay all the fees.
- 17:00Ah yeah, there's a like an early cancelation fee or something like that.
- 17:03Not even just that, but like all these hidden fees that they've never
- 17:07disclosed to the consumers. They're saying, yeah, okay, you can cancel,
- 17:11but you're gonna have to pay us all of these extra fees. However,
- 17:15if you choose to stay with us for another year, we can make
- 17:19these fees go away. And that's what that's what consumers are saying, is
- 17:23they're basically extortion. It's extortion. Really, they're extorting the customers and threatening
- 17:30them with all these extra fees if they cancel. And then yes, also
- 17:34on top of that, they're making it very difficult to find out how to
- 17:37cancel, because people have been saying that they've been calling into Adobe and when
- 17:42they want to go cancel, they're just getting bounced around from person to person
- 17:45to person until the point where they get frustrated and hang up. Yeah.
- 17:49Yeah, kind of ran into it. I ran into that earlier this year
- 17:52with into it when I decided that quick Books it was just getting too expensive.
- 17:57It got to the point where you know, it's like almost almost five
- 18:00hundred dollars a year to use the service. And I finally said, and
- 18:03I came from that early quick Books where you you paid for it, you
- 18:08bought the disc and there you go. You were good, And even in
- 18:11this case, they didn't until I found that I could use an older version
- 18:15just for creating the invoices that I needed to do, and that's all it
- 18:18was. That's all I used anyways. But they made it a little difficult
- 18:22and it got to the point where it was really frustrating. But Adobe get
- 18:26ensued by the FTC is actually that's saying quite a bit. Combining with you
- 18:32what you opened up with this story about how Adobe's terms of services changed and
- 18:38were basically if you didn't follow that story, in the terms of services,
- 18:44it was basically saying that you give Adobe unrestricted rights to all of your content,
- 18:52any content that you create using their product, they are free to use
- 18:56for whatever they see fit, whether it be at especially the stuff in AI,
- 19:03and people were saying no, no, no, no, no,
- 19:04no, no no no. I'm paying you for your software, you don't
- 19:07get to use my content. The problem was is they could not use the
- 19:12software until they agreed to these terms, and if you did not agree,
- 19:17they would lock it out. You couldn't you would you could not use the
- 19:19software. I A guy a no name, Ron Hazelwood, he's on Facebook,
- 19:26did this post earlier today and he said non Adobe users say ooh ah
- 19:30at the AI pick and scroll on Adobe users, you may be interested in
- 19:36this. Adobe is playing the carrot and stick game. If you're like me,
- 19:40an open Photoshop in the last week you were greeted by an update to
- 19:42the terms of service. You didn't agree, you were immediately locked out.
- 19:48Now see that's that's so interesting that you were locked out of it, I
- 19:52said, I clicked agree. The carrot was generally of AI and the stick
- 19:56was in the TOS. Now, the terms of service says that any content
- 20:00they define content as and he says he's quoting here. Content means any text,
- 20:04information, communication, or material such as audio files, video files,
- 20:08electronic documents, images that you upload, import into, embed for use by,
- 20:14or create using the Adobe services and software. And I'm quoting again.
- 20:18You grant us Adobe a non exclusive, worldwide, royalty free sub licensable license
- 20:26to use, reproduce, publicly displayed, distribute, modified, create derivative works
- 20:30based on publicly perform, and translate the content. I believe the best way
- 20:34to say that is all your contents are now belonged to us exactly. Well,
- 20:40you know it's interesting because I, as I told you, I just
- 20:42recently went ahead and said, okay, Adobe, I want to take a
- 20:47look at the new suite the AI. They sent me over a license to
- 20:52give it a try, and I have on my phone Adobe Express, and
- 20:56I noticed that anytime I want to use it, upload it to a dope
- 21:02it does, upload it to Adobe where then I can make changes and then
- 21:06download it. But that means I have taken that photo and already uploaded it
- 21:10to them, So now they could use it as a derivative work. You
- 21:14just mentioned text documents. Yeah, people create sensitive documents, ye sense,
- 21:22lawyer lawsuit things, medical records, you know, private information. And they're
- 21:29basically saying no, no, we can do whatever we want with this.
- 21:32Now. Tax forms, you have your tax forms that are PDF, or
- 21:37you know, deeds of trust paperwork. Not a good look for Adobe,
- 21:41these two things. Even just intellectual property, right, like story ideas,
- 21:45you come up with story ideas, you put it in a PDF to send
- 21:48us. Somebody like they can take all that. Yeah, yeah, Ron
- 21:52did say, he said, I've researched some alternative programs. He says they
- 21:56have to be able to open raw and PSD files and have a comparable tool
- 22:00set. The one I like is called Affinity Photo two, so something to
- 22:06remember. Affinity Photo two. He says he's looking at that one as a
- 22:10possible alternative. I think there are some that don't care. There are some
- 22:15that just I create a picture. I really don't care. Though the Adobe
- 22:18Photoshops suite is pretty powerful, Premiere is pretty powerful. I mean PDFs,
- 22:26come on, PDFs are we use those every day? And though there are
- 22:30some people that aren't going to care, but I think a lot of professionals
- 22:33are going to be No, wait a minute, Wait a minute, these
- 22:36are my images and they've been using that. Now will they be moving to
- 22:40a new program? Will another program come along? Will Correll, who used
- 22:45to be really great into they had, you know, Correl the photo versions
- 22:48of it. Now it's more design, But will they bring more of that
- 22:52at back now that Adobe is kind of making some people angry? Or will
- 22:57Will Correll be forced to do the same thing. I don't know what's gonna
- 23:02happen, but adope, this is not a good look for Adobe. I
- 23:03mean these two, like I said, these two things combined a one to
- 23:07two punch man. They better get every single lawyer they got and try to
- 23:11fight this out. But I don't think they're gonna win. I mean,
- 23:14the Court of public opinion is in session right and right now it is not
- 23:18looking good for Adobe. They really really messed up. Wouldn't it be good?
- 23:22Okay? Number one, if they can they can fix this canceling online
- 23:26subscription mess they could they could fix that. Number two, Could they fix
- 23:32it so that Adobe says, all right, we don't have a claim on
- 23:34your photos, you know, and and if they're yours, will they do
- 23:37that? I don't think they will, though. I don't think they're gonna.
- 23:41I think they're gonna stick their guns and try to try to stick this
- 23:44out because they they think in their minds that they are untouchable. You know.
- 23:48They're one of those huge, giant tech companies that think that they can
- 23:51run the world, just like all these other tech companies. And I really
- 23:53think that the day of reckoning is coming for every single one of these tech
- 23:57companies. I mean, look at what happening to Meta right now. They're
- 24:00being sued by so many people over you know, allegations that you know,
- 24:06they're forcing children to be addicted to their platforms to be able to sell them
- 24:10advertising. I really think that the day of reckoning is coming for these big
- 24:12tech companies. We'll have to see how this plays out. The meantime,
- 24:15we can take a break. Matter of fact, keeping on that note,
- 24:18there has been something that this past week also has hit the news, and
- 24:22a lot of people are talking about it, and a lot of parents are
- 24:25finally going, We'll wait a minute, what does this mean? So we'll
- 24:27do that when we come back. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Sean de Weird,
- 24:30and I'm justin let me. You can find us on the web at
- 24:33tech talk radio dot com and now fact to tech talk Radio. Hey,
- 24:37what's up. This is Tom Arnold and you're listening to tech talk Radio.
- 24:41They're really great and I love them. Hey how about a copy of Windows?
- 24:45Can I get a laptop? So before the break, we were just
- 24:49talking about all these you know, technology companies getting sued and things. And
- 24:55now you know, there's a new story that just came out a couple days
- 24:57ago. I think it was the US Surgeon General. I mean the the
- 25:02US Surgeon General wants to put like these these like tobacco style warnings, but
- 25:11for social media, like he wants he wants these warnings that would like say
- 25:15something like you know this social media has been proven to be addictive and can
- 25:21lead to you know, mental health issues and stuff. Because you know,
- 25:26tech companies aren't doing it. And and this is again, this is going
- 25:29back to what I was saying before the break is you know, Metas being
- 25:30sued and and a lot of parents are saying, you know, no,
- 25:34you're not gonna be on social media. It's just it's not good for you.
- 25:37I mean not even for kids, I mean just for adults in general.
- 25:41Social media is horrible. Yeah, Sean is somebody that has pulled away
- 25:45from social media. I mean except for today. I reactivated my Facebook today.
- 25:53Why So, I was talking with a coworker who I went to college
- 26:00with, and she has recently deleted her Facebook, and she's like, I
- 26:07didn't download my photos. I didn't download any of my photos that I had
- 26:11uploaded, albums from college and all stuff. So she's missing a good chunk
- 26:15of her life from college and just beyond because that's the only place that existed.
- 26:22It didn't exist anywhere else. So I was thinking, well, I
- 26:26had done that, right, I had downloaded all my data off of Facebook.
- 26:30You can do that, you can't, and there are guides for it.
- 26:33But the only thing I hadn't grabbed was photos I was tagged in.
- 26:38Oh So I did some research and I found a Chrome extension called Tagged Photo
- 26:45Explorer out Tagged Photo Exporter. You add the extension to Chrome. You open
- 26:52your Facebook photos tab, you start the extension, and it finds all of
- 26:57the pictures that you're tagged in and download for you. Oh wow, so
- 27:02interesting. Now afterwards, did you then delete the account again or I am
- 27:07in the I literally started the process twenty minutes before we started recording, right,
- 27:11so I have to say, but I have to go back in and
- 27:14redactivate my Facebook account. But I thought, maybe you Right now, my
- 27:18Facebook account is active, So I thought you were going a different direction with
- 27:22this story, to be honest, I thought maybe what you were saying was
- 27:26is that you were going to reactivate your account and go to her page because
- 27:32you know, you were friends with her, and then download all of her
- 27:34photos for her. Nor her Facebook book is gone. It's gone, like
- 27:40it doesn't exist. She just didn't. No, it's still it still exists,
- 27:42Yeah, kid, she I'm sure. I'm sure there's a way,
- 27:45like I've done that before, where there's an account that maybe I had that
- 27:49I decided I didn't want anymore, but I wanted still the photos. That
- 27:53you could go online and say, download all of this and then once it's
- 27:56downloaded, you could then delete it. You can do the same with Google,
- 28:00Google Photos, a Google documents as well. Yeah, and when you
- 28:03deactivate or delete your social media accounts, you don't really deactivate or delete.
- 28:07It's always going to be there. I don't know. Is that true.
- 28:11I would say yes, but it's proven to not necessarily be the case with
- 28:15Apple. Right, Apple had that ole issue where deleted photos were coming back
- 28:18because it was iCloud error. Yeah, right, so quote unquote error.
- 28:25How do you feel about this though? Is is it really needed for the
- 28:29Surgeon General to come out and say, listen, it's snapchat or yeah,
- 28:33Instagram? Is it really addictive? Absolutely? I mean, and it's not
- 28:37just social media, it's just the Internet in general. It's I mean,
- 28:40they're all kind of social media platforms, but like YouTube, TikTok, all
- 28:45these platforms are incredibly addicting, and they're predatory in terms of adserve and just
- 28:55getting those ads in your faces and just being I don't know, tapping into
- 29:00that serotonin part of your brain to get you back into it. There was
- 29:03something I saw in passing a couple of days ago. I don't remember where
- 29:07it was, but talking about how seventy five or something percent of children,
- 29:12you know, ages, you know ten to like twenty right are suffering from
- 29:18depression, and the common link is social media because they're just bombarded from the
- 29:23time their children up until adults. This whole generation of people were just bombarded
- 29:30with pictures of their friends and families and other things. And everybody's perfect,
- 29:36well manicured lives, right, and they're all they're constantly trying to keep up
- 29:41and one up each other with things. And so if you can't keep up
- 29:45with the joneses per se, you know, you're going to lead to depression
- 29:48because all my life sucks. Well, I can't do all the cool things.
- 29:52And this is true. They more kids are depressed because social media.
- 29:56I was zeber bullying and stuff. Wh growing up, we went out and
- 30:02played, you know, I mean, that was the thing you did.
- 30:04You went out in the front yard, you rude your bike, you hung
- 30:07out with your friends. But that's that's that's what we did. That's what
- 30:11I did. Yeah, and that's what I did in grade school. It's
- 30:15and I guess you know, I don't. And and there are people that
- 30:18are against this whole idea of the Surgeon General saying this that say, well,
- 30:22it's the job of the parent. You're taking away the job of the
- 30:25parent. Right, But is it out of hand? I mean a parent,
- 30:30yes, comparent? But is it now? Okay, wait a minute,
- 30:33they're they're if they're not say it at home, maybe they do,
- 30:36But once they get to school, they've got their friends that are giving them
- 30:40their device to log into their account, and then they're doing this and they
- 30:42they post a photo and yeah, okay, they post a photo. How
- 30:45many how many likes did I get? How many likes? It's all about
- 30:48the thing. The problem, you know, that is that's the problem,
- 30:52how many likes. But the kids are gonna find ways to do things.
- 30:55I mean, think about it, Andy, When you were a kid,
- 30:57right, you probably away and found a way to smoke a cigarette here and
- 31:02there? No, right, no, oh yeah whatever. No, I
- 31:03was a good kid. I was a Civil Air Patrol. It was an
- 31:06ultar boy, right. I find that hard to believe. My dad us
- 31:11anyway, my mom and dad used to go to Denny's our Friday night where
- 31:14I was sitting with my friends Paul and Tom and Brian. And what were
- 31:18we doing. We were drinking tea and we were talking about muddy Python,
- 31:22the fermented tea, right, fermented tea, no Liptid's oh okay no,
- 31:29But I mean kids are gonna do kids stuff. They're gonna find ways to
- 31:32do those kind of things. But I think this is a good thing because
- 31:34finally, finally, the federal government is stepping in and saying, yo,
- 31:38this is a problem. But what because nobody else is doing it. Who
- 31:42is it talking to though? Is it talking to that little all of us
- 31:47fourteen year old who's just been given their first smartphone or tablet and once to
- 31:51get on Snapchat and post photos. And here's my other problem. Are the
- 31:56companies made to the people who own Snapchat, the people that own TikTok,
- 32:00the people own be Real, Oh you'll be real and sold. Yeah.
- 32:02But all of these companies, they're doing nothing to protect the kids from seeing
- 32:07things they won't they shouldn't be seeing because they make money. It's all about
- 32:13the almighty dollar. That's all they care about is how much money can we
- 32:17make. These companies do not care that your kids are watching videos, or
- 32:23they don't care. They just don't care. Yeah, they're making money off
- 32:28your kids eyeballs. There has been a situation online with and this is what
- 32:32I'm kind of down on meta for this one. But there's been a situation
- 32:37on Facebook. I haven't seen this too much on Instagram, but on Facebook,
- 32:40where I see somebody has completely copied the profile of somebody I know,
- 32:47And it happens all the time, and I'll notify them and they won't do
- 32:52it. They'll send me a know back. It doesn't it doesn't break,
- 32:55you know, any rules I have. I have reported so much content on
- 33:02Facebook, I mean, blatant sponsored ads like you see what was it about?
- 33:10Gosh, maybe five six months ago, maybe eight months ago, there
- 33:15were a barrage of Fanatics sportswear fake ads like Fanatics is the company that does
- 33:22all like the NFL, NBA, and there was like these fake Yeah,
- 33:25but they were like all these fake ads saying fanatics, you know, seventy
- 33:30five percent off, get your jersey for twenty five bucks or something like that.
- 33:34These were obvious scams, and I would report that content of Facebook and
- 33:38Facebook every single time, like no, it's not breaking any of our rules.
- 33:44It's like you you're I mean, it was so furious, It was
- 33:47so frustrating. Yeah, because first off, they don't have any human eyeballs
- 33:52looking at all. This All this content review is all just AI and again
- 33:58they're making money. They're taking all that money from those scammers, and they're
- 34:01like, yeah, sure, go ahead and run. They're stilletting paid.
- 34:04We don't care the ad. Yeah, we don't care. Run your ads.
- 34:07Right. Well, it's kind of like it's kind of like that laptop
- 34:09that I bought because I said I got to do this just to see and
- 34:14we were right. It was a fake ad, a ninety nine dollars laptop
- 34:16clearance and never never thought anything, Well, my money was gone because it
- 34:21went into went into the coffers of these people who bought the You can't believe
- 34:23you actually did that. I wanted to see. I really wanted to to
- 34:27see is this as fake as I think it is? And I was one
- 34:30hundred percent correct? And you know that now you're you've got tagging going on.
- 34:36But here's the thing. What can a parent do you know, other
- 34:39than a parent don't get you don't give the kid a device, you know,
- 34:45or does a parent sit with them? And you know, and it's
- 34:51got to be frustrating. Well, I think what that second point you made,
- 34:53that that that's that's step one. You know, first off, you're
- 34:58not going to be able to get away with not giving your kid a device.
- 35:00Now, I mean, I don't care who you are with this.
- 35:05Oh anti device, anti television, Yeah, good luck with that, okay,
- 35:07Because kids are being given laptops at school to do their homework on now
- 35:12tablets at school to do their homework. They're gonna have devices. But I
- 35:17think you're step two, that thing that you mentioned point number two. Sit
- 35:22with your kid, Sit down and actually spend some time with them and teach
- 35:28them that the Internet is a great place, but it is also a horrible
- 35:34place. Yeah, and you have to be able to teach them what to
- 35:37do and what not to do and what to be on the lookout for.
- 35:43And if you don't do that, then yeah, you're gonna have problems.
- 35:46But a lot of parents nowadays they feel like, oh, I'm just gonna
- 35:51give my kid this device and let them watch you two because I don't want
- 35:52to deal with them. How will you do? Unrestricted access is the biggest
- 35:59no no you can you as a parent. Yeah, here's here's an iPad
- 36:01with the internet. Go go ham. That's the biggest no no you could
- 36:07do. A couple of weeks ago, we had the Gentleman on from canopy,
- 36:10I mean, is a third party service that monitors a good idea.
- 36:15I think I don't know part of it, but I don't think you can't.
- 36:16You can't just get a third party service to give it to your kid.
- 36:20Here you go, but I'm watching everything you do, you know,
- 36:22I mean why not? You're the parent, right like you don't do you
- 36:28don't follow by my rules, then you don't get to use the internet.
- 36:31Like I mean, think about when you were a kid. It's like you're,
- 36:35you know, in your house, like your parents are, like you
- 36:37either play by my rules or you don't get to go out and play with
- 36:39your friends, or you don't get your bike, you don't get to go
- 36:43outside and hang out. You're gonna be by my rules or you're gonna be
- 36:45in your bedroom grounded. Parents nowadays are too soft. You you both have
- 36:50children, and I've got a grandson that's around the same age. You know,
- 36:53they're young, justin your your son's a little older. What how will
- 36:58you approach this when suddenly they they want to use this? Are you already
- 37:01going through that? What do you already am? Well? I mean,
- 37:06I first off, I don't let him watch any YouTube without me being somewhat
- 37:12a present around. I mean, uh, it's either gonna be watching it
- 37:15in the living room where we're all, you know, being around, or
- 37:19it's right next to me. Yes, granted, sometimes I might get distracted
- 37:23and then I look over and I'm like, what are you watching? And
- 37:27he's like, oh, I'm watching this skimmitty toilet or whatever, and but
- 37:30it's like a it's a remix where there's like guns and blood involved, and
- 37:34I'm like, yeah, no, we're not watching that one, you know,
- 37:37so like you have to constantly keep tabs on that. But I do
- 37:39sit down with him and I say, look, you know, there are
- 37:43a lot of things on the Internet that you should not see. And and
- 37:46he, you know, obviously that gets him curious because he's like, well,
- 37:50like what And I'm like, well, blood and guts, dead people,
- 37:55and You're like do you really want to see that? And he's like,
- 37:58no, no, I don't want to see that. I'm like,
- 38:00well, then you need to understand why we we set limits for you,
- 38:04and we only let you, you know, use the screens like an hour
- 38:07a day, and that includes video game time. So he gets like one
- 38:13hour a day between video games and YouTube. After that no more Sean you
- 38:17like, so, yeah, I mean Max likes to watch YouTube on our
- 38:24TV because you know, he can find Lightning mc queen videos or he can
- 38:29hospitrol. He's two and a half. Okay, yeah, he'll he will
- 38:32find you know, Blippy Disney know Disney you know, Disney movies, whatever.
- 38:37Please don't you don't let him watch KYU do you that Canadian one day?
- 38:44Oh my god? K And so mostly it's like ABC videos whatever.
- 38:49So we don't spend a whole lot of time doing that. But that's the
- 38:53only time he's on screens is occasionally at night when he's before but before bedtime,
- 38:59or on the weekends if we're just being lazier in the house. But
- 39:02we don't. We have I have friends who have kids that are a little
- 39:06bit older to Max that they just hand him a tablet and the kid already
- 39:09knows how to load YouTube on their own. Yeah. Max, we don't
- 39:14want that for Max. We, like Justine said earlier, we're we're there's
- 39:21no way we can't let Max learn technology. There's just no way that is
- 39:25going to be a disservice for him. Yeah, but we have to give
- 39:30we have to curate his habits on how to use technology in a way that's
- 39:36going to benefit him in society, not just be not just be a mental
- 39:42train, and not just be a place for him to just go and shut
- 39:45out the world. Now, there's a time and a place for that,
- 39:49right, there's a time and a place where you can go and find But
- 39:52like any other addictive substance, there could be too much of it. What
- 39:59do you do and it can be dangerous? What do you do when your
- 40:01child comes to you and says, I've decided what I want to do for
- 40:05my career. I want to be a social media influencer. Uh yeah,
- 40:10I would say, well, first off, good luck with that. Oh
- 40:15boy, say get a real job. Yeah, I just you know.
- 40:20Technology can be great for education, it'd be great for learning, could be
- 40:23great for fun, creativity, but there are some dark spots. And you
- 40:28know, with this Surgeon General warning help, I would love to hear from
- 40:31other parents that are listening to this right now, what have you done to
- 40:36make it safer for your child when it comes to online activities or technology.
- 40:40Feel free to drop us an email tech Guys at tech talk radio dot com.
- 40:45We may read that solution on the air In the meantime, we do
- 40:47have to take another break. The heat is here. We've got a warning
- 40:50for you. We will share that with you coming up. I'm Andy Taylor,
- 40:53I'm Seanda Weird, and I'm justin Lemmy and I was gonna plug something
- 40:58else, but not after this segment, and so find us on the web
- 41:00tech talk radio dot com. We'll be right back now back to tech talk
- 41:06Radio. My problem is, I've got my pointer in the middle of the
- 41:09screen and I need to move it to the left, but my mouth is
- 41:14over on the left hand side of the pad, and if I go any
- 41:17further to the left, it's going to go off the pad. Anyway,
- 41:21if you can give me a call, I appreciate it. I'll wait for
- 41:23you until I hear from you. So we've been talking a lot about this
- 41:32whole social media tangent. Just going off on a rant about social media.
- 41:38This is this is my theory. Is not associated with tech talk Radio.
- 41:45Disclaimer. It is my personal opinion and theory that there is going to be
- 41:52in the next decade or so a youth digital rebellion. Okay, what would
- 41:58that be? Meaning younger children, probably teenagers, into high school and maybe
- 42:04into early colleges are going to just dump the Internet. They're going to demand
- 42:09that peer to peter, teacher to peter learning experience like tactile, actually reading
- 42:17books, actually getting the hands on experience and getting the one on one interactions
- 42:22with teachers instead of just saying, here's your iPad, do the lesson.
- 42:27What were you just saying though? About what your wife Caitlin so she had
- 42:30a friend's so one of her friends as a kid that's a teenager, and
- 42:36the comment came up about like online shopping, and her her kids said,
- 42:40what would it be like if we could do online shopping but in real life?
- 42:45Oh my god, like that like going to the mall or you know,
- 42:52going to like actually going and spending money in the community. Like yeah,
- 43:00yeah, I don't know. I kind of just kind of just kind
- 43:04of makes me, you know, face palmed, and this is like whatever,
- 43:06but it's funny. There is going to be some level of there has
- 43:10to be, right because there's just so many kids are falling so far behind
- 43:15in the early ages because they're just relying on tablets. They're not getting that
- 43:20tacticle experience, they're not getting the peer to peer communication skills, they're not
- 43:24getting the teacher to peer communication skills, they're not getting critical thinking. There's
- 43:30just so many things that technology. Technology is great like. Don't get me
- 43:32wrong, I love technology, I love playing with it, but there is
- 43:37some bad in just dumping everything to your kids on technology. Here's one other
- 43:42thought too, And I was just thinking about the Sean and tell me guys
- 43:45if you think I'm way off here, but the Fate, Meta and some
- 43:47of these other companies would really love to push you into that more of a
- 43:52an experience that is a virtual classroom, that is virtual shopping, that you're
- 43:58wearing headsets that you were able to go anywhere you want and experience anything you
- 44:01want. But let's face it, during that voyage, you've got an AD
- 44:07feeding here and an AD feeding there. You've got a captive mind that has
- 44:10an AD coming at it. If you're walking with your friends inside a shopping
- 44:15mall of mall, right, you're you're you know, you see the signs,
- 44:20but you honestly are You're It's not like an AD being fed right at
- 44:23you. Is this there's this this dissociation with the Internet and with virtual everything.
- 44:34Right, Yeah, you go to the mall, you're walking You're feeling
- 44:37your feet on the carpet, You're feeling the air, You're feeling the mist
- 44:40off the fountains. You're smelling Hollister as you walk by. Right, you're
- 44:45feeling the clothes you're now you're giving me all nostalgic dude, right, you
- 44:49know you There is a tactile function of the human experience that is missing,
- 44:54right, and it's leading to I don't know what it's leading to, but
- 45:00it's just that tactile experience. I got it. What is it? What
- 45:07did you get? Meta needs to come out with tactile suits and a smell
- 45:12function for the Meta Quest four so you can smell. Yeah, so your
- 45:16haptic feedback with smell, just like Ready Player one. Right, that's what
- 45:21they gotta do. I love this. Well, there's a meme that I
- 45:24saw this week as an older gentleman and he's he's with a walker, and
- 45:28he's he's got a younger man that's helping him, and he says, once
- 45:31upon a time, motherboards had no onboard sound. If you want it sound,
- 45:37you needed to spend lots of dollars to buy a card from sound Blaster,
- 45:40a company called Creative and a guy saying sure, Grandpa, let's get
- 45:45you to bed. Let's get you back to bed. Yeah. Yeah,
- 45:47that meme is very that's a very famous meme. I love that meme.
- 45:51How how different it will be, We'll have to see. But I like
- 45:54the idea that John is purporting that maybe we'll see some kind of a some
- 46:00kind of a change with the kids. Really want to experience something different,
- 46:04or the next major attack on our country is going to be cut off the
- 46:07internet for an extended period of time. Community, I'm not going to screwing
- 46:12up. Yeah, yeah, exactly, the electricity, the grid, the
- 46:15internet. I think that would be I honestly think that that would be something
- 46:19that would be a target because then you spread that information fast about what's going
- 46:22on. They don't want nobody would want that that would be doing something like
- 46:27that. All right, the heat is here. We want to make sure
- 46:29that we mentioned this for any of you that we have a habit and this
- 46:34is the same for you and Indiana, same for you in Denver. We
- 46:38have a habit of like we will put our laptop bag in the backseat of
- 46:43the car or in the trunk, and you don't want to be doing that
- 46:49because of the heat when you close it. If you say, you go
- 46:52somewhere and I'll just put my laptop bag in the trunk and I'll go inside
- 46:54shopping. Right, and you're in shopping for two hours, that heat inside
- 46:59that vehicle get super hot and it will affect the electronics in your tablet,
- 47:04your laptop, whatever you have in your car. But justin you and I
- 47:07have both experienced this with dash cams, right, Yeah, a dash cam
- 47:13that is in the direct sunlight, my battery basically expanded. It was ready
- 47:17to blow up icy pillow. Yeah, well, think think of it this
- 47:22way, right, the old the old age adage of the magnifying glass in
- 47:27the ant, right, use the magnifying glass to set stuff on fire.
- 47:31Right, Well, that's what a camera lenses. It's a focal point for
- 47:37a lens. So if you if you park your car and your dash cam
- 47:40is pointing at the sun, you are feeding that light directly into you the
- 47:45censor of your camera. So you let it sit for three four hours,
- 47:49you can literally melt your camera. Yeah, and I've had that actually happen.
- 47:53So you want to you definitely want to take those down. You don't
- 47:57want to leave the tablets or laptops or device in the car. And then
- 48:00every year I do this, I call the annual warning. Michael Brian who
- 48:05started tech talk radio with me back, you know, back in the nineties.
- 48:08One day, I'll never forget he had taken He was a computer repair
- 48:13guy too. He still is out there in the Palm desert. But he
- 48:16had taken a bag full of canned air. His candair is great, Oh
- 48:22no, and he had a laptop inside the bag. The canda air exploded
- 48:27in the heat and destroyed his laptop, destroyed the bag. Stuff was all
- 48:34over the inside of the windshield. It's just not a good sight. So
- 48:37definitely gotta be careful about leaving those electronics to the car. And if you
- 48:39have a dash some people have these dash car radios that you could pull the
- 48:44you know, the the plate off, do it. You know, we
- 48:47tend to just leave it in there. Not. I haven't seen one of
- 48:52those in twenty five years, dude, I had this unit. You haven't
- 48:54seen. I haven't seen a headless unit in like twenty five years. Man,
- 49:00those are all the raids to be really cool. You're right, yeah,
- 49:04they were. They were kind of cool. So something not to mention.
- 49:07Not to mention. I mean, obviously don't leave electronics, but also
- 49:10don't leave your children or your pets in your car either. Oh yeah,
- 49:14those two those are bad. That's kind of it's kind of bad. Not
- 49:17good. No, they're electronics, is one thing. Yeah, but yeah,
- 49:22that probably wasn't the greatest reaction there. Yeah. Did you guys see
- 49:28the story this week? And I bought one of these, but I never
- 49:30used it about Wells Fargo. Wells Fargo apparently found some employees that were using
- 49:37mouse jigglers. Oh so they're working from home and they want to keep themselves
- 49:43looking active or something. Yeah, so what happens is, you know,
- 49:45it can actually look at the computer movement and see that, oh that computer
- 49:52is doing of the of the mouse. Yeah. Yeah, they could see
- 49:54that, and with that they say, okay, that person's working. Well
- 49:58it's after I guess somebody probably talked. They found that there were employees that
- 50:04bought the mouse jigulers. I remember I bought mine for like twelve bucks.
- 50:07It was just to show on TV. But they were actually using these and
- 50:13they got caught and they were terminated because they were being deceptive. So they
- 50:17are basically hooking up their computer clocking in, setting a mouse jiggler, and
- 50:22then going out golfing exactly not being there where they were supposed to be at
- 50:25work. PC World, I want to mention this. They got a great
- 50:30article on how to turn off recall on Copilot plus PCs. Those PCs were
- 50:36officially launched last Tuesday, and basically if you in this article, if you
- 50:43turn it off, you could stop Windows from recording everything. Every five seconds,
- 50:47the recall function records everything that happened on your PC. Sean talked about
- 50:51this last week on the show. Takes a screenshot of your screen every five
- 50:54seconds. They say, this is going to be used for AI to better
- 50:59learn your habits. It's just basically going to use AI to analyze the images
- 51:06so you can you can say, oh, I need this file that I
- 51:07put in the recycle band, you know, and it's gonna look at AI.
- 51:12It's going to go, oh yeah, here's the file and the recycle
- 51:14band. It can then recall to that. They time and pull that file
- 51:17out, and all of a sudden, they they claim that this is not
- 51:22any all your stuff is not being archived or is not being scanned, it's
- 51:25not being sent to the internet. They claim that it's all staying local to
- 51:31your computer, which I really somehow doubt now if it. But I have
- 51:37a question though, if it's like literally backing up everything or or or looking
- 51:45at everything. What one question is, it's got to have a bunch of
- 51:50extra storage, right, I mean, you got to have a bunch of
- 51:52room for it to cash all that stuff. But the other question, more
- 51:57important question is if if recall that's what they call it, recall, Right,
- 52:00yeah, if recall is scanning your entire computer, is that considered a
- 52:07total recall? Oh? Boy, here all week and get to the job
- 52:16job. If you want to turn it off, you go to settings,
- 52:20Privacy and Security, recall and snapshots Ian Windows and then you should be able
- 52:24to turn it off there deactivate it. But either way, I don't know.
- 52:29We'll have to see how that plays out. Another quick break, come
- 52:31back with more of tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Seanda Weird,
