Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Yukon Football Coaches Show.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Husky's hit the road, go to Houston, take on Rice
- 0:05Speaker 2: Owls who have a new coach, and we'll talk about
- 0:07Speaker 2: them in just a moment.
- 0:08Speaker 1: But first back with Jim Mora.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Juice Faren had four catches eighty two yards against Boston College,
- 0:15Speaker 2: a fifty yard or a fourteen yarder and two touchdowns.
- 0:19Speaker 2: And Jim is one of my favorite players.
- 0:22Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 0:22Speaker 2: I start watching a guy play the game and you
- 0:25Speaker 2: see some of the things he does and you can't
- 0:28Speaker 2: wait for a breakout.
- 0:29Speaker 1: And I think we had that on Saturday. Is that
- 0:31Speaker 1: fair to say?
- 0:33Speaker 3: I hope, so, I hope you're right. You know, we
- 0:37Speaker 3: have a lot of respect for Juice. He's very talented.
- 0:40Speaker 3: He can do a lot of different things. He's versatile,
- 0:43Speaker 3: and it's kind of been coming. You know, you've seen it.
- 0:46Speaker 3: You've seen him get close several times to making that
- 0:50Speaker 3: big play and to see it happen a couple of
- 0:53Speaker 3: times on Saturday was great. It's a payout, payoff for
- 0:57Speaker 3: the work that he's been doing and just stick to
- 1:00Speaker 3: it in this that he's had.
- 1:02Speaker 4: So hopefully, you know that.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Leads to more opportunities and more big plays because he's.
- 1:09Speaker 4: He's not easy to defend.
- 1:11Speaker 3: You know, he's a very savvy route runner, He's very smart.
- 1:15Speaker 3: He has a great feel for the game, and he's
- 1:17Speaker 3: got nice hands. So and he's got a great personality.
- 1:21Speaker 3: You know, he's the kind of guy he just loves
- 1:22Speaker 3: to be around.
- 1:23Speaker 2: He does I mean on the depth chart, do you
- 1:25Speaker 2: call him a tight end? Do you call him a slot?
- 1:27Speaker 2: Do you call him a white wide receiver?
- 1:29Speaker 1: What? What is his category?
- 1:33Speaker 3: Well, he's an F in our terminology, which is a
- 1:35Speaker 3: you know, more of a receiving tight end. I'm not
- 1:38Speaker 3: sure our other teams treat him whether they treat him
- 1:41Speaker 3: as a tight end or a wide out. And I
- 1:43Speaker 3: think that's one of the beauties of having a guy
- 1:45Speaker 3: like that, as you're forcing a coordinator to determine how
- 1:48Speaker 3: they want to treat him. You know, what personnel group
- 1:51Speaker 3: are we in, uh determining? You know, is he a
- 1:55Speaker 3: tight end? Is he a wide out? Are they going
- 1:56Speaker 3: to use him as a running back? It's a little
- 1:59Speaker 3: bit the same with lou Ansen. You know, is he
- 2:01Speaker 3: a back? Is the a tiight end? You know, we
- 2:03Speaker 3: split him out, So you want to create as much
- 2:06Speaker 3: much disruption as you can.
- 2:08Speaker 4: You want to create.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Confusion for a defense, you know, you want to create
- 2:13Speaker 3: uncertainty for a defense and how they're going to call
- 2:15Speaker 3: a game, and having guys like Juice and Lou that
- 2:18Speaker 3: really helps us do that.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Yeah, and you have alex Hanago out a nice game
- 2:22Speaker 2: against Boston College. I'm looking at Yukon's offenses if I'm
- 2:27Speaker 2: trying to defend him. And when you can bring in
- 2:29Speaker 2: a Nator Churchy and add some you know, John Knider
- 2:33Speaker 2: to whatever setup you have with the receiving core, that
- 2:36Speaker 2: puts the defense a little bit on notice, doesn't it
- 2:39Speaker 2: to kind of make adjustments on the fly.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Is that how it works?
- 2:43Speaker 4: You know?
- 2:43Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 2:45Speaker 3: I think yeah, theoretically, yeah, it does. I'm not sure,
- 2:48Speaker 3: you know, with each coordinator is a little bit different,
- 2:50Speaker 3: like how they prepare. They prepare for players, they prepare
- 2:53Speaker 3: for scheme, you know, I mean, you prepare for both,
- 2:56Speaker 3: but you know, where do you put most of your
- 2:58Speaker 3: efforts and energy. I just think the more the more
- 3:03Speaker 3: variables you can present to a defense, the harder it
- 3:06Speaker 3: is to prepare. And I know that, you know, as
- 3:08Speaker 3: a defensive coordinator myself, when you have troubles zeroing in
- 3:14Speaker 3: on what a team's going to do and how they're
- 3:15Speaker 3: going to use players. You know, it makes it a
- 3:18Speaker 3: little bit more difficult to defend.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Yukon is on the road at Rice on Saturday, coming
- 3:24Speaker 2: off first Power Conference road wins since twenty twelve. Husky's
- 3:29Speaker 2: beat Maryland at their place in Louisville as well, and
- 3:32Speaker 2: we talk about winning on the road.
- 3:34Speaker 1: We've talked about it a few times.
- 3:36Speaker 2: I don't know, is it more satisfying or is there
- 3:40Speaker 2: even a reason to say that, because I always feel
- 3:43Speaker 2: like when you go to the other guy's place, if
- 3:46Speaker 2: it's football, basketball, the best sound is that quiet sound
- 3:50Speaker 2: when you're leaving the stadium with the arena where the
- 3:53Speaker 2: other teams fans have nothing to say.
- 3:56Speaker 3: No. I mean, that's nice, but that's for us. We
- 3:59Speaker 3: just want to win, you know, we just want to win.
- 4:02Speaker 3: And we don't talk about that stuff very much, Mike,
- 4:05Speaker 3: I mean a little bit. You know, you do talk about, hey,
- 4:07Speaker 3: we got to go on the road, and these are
- 4:08Speaker 3: the demands of going on the road. But our expectations
- 4:12Speaker 3: are that no matter who we play, where we play,
- 4:14Speaker 3: what time we play, what the conditions are that we
- 4:16Speaker 3: have to have a standard that we play up to.
- 4:19Speaker 3: You know, otherwise you become inconsistent, and we don't want
- 4:21Speaker 3: to be inconsistent.
- 4:22Speaker 4: We want to reach consistency.
- 4:24Speaker 3: And so the only way to do that, in my opinion,
- 4:26Speaker 3: is continue to focus on the things that you deem
- 4:29Speaker 3: to be priorities over.
- 4:31Speaker 4: And over and over and over and over and over
- 4:33Speaker 4: and over again.
- 4:33Speaker 3: And that's what we've really tried to do, and I
- 4:36Speaker 3: think our players have embraced that.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Yeah, it's valuable, no question.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Quick thoughts on defense before we take a break, and
- 4:43Speaker 2: we'll we'll get back with a little bit on rice
- 4:45Speaker 2: here on the Yukon Football Coaches Show, Mike Crispino and
- 4:48Speaker 2: Jim Mora, Brian param come on. Nine solo tackles, fourteen tackles,
- 4:53Speaker 2: two tackles for losses.
- 4:56Speaker 1: This guy sacks. I forgot that.
- 4:59Speaker 4: Sorry, Yeah, I don't forget that.
- 5:01Speaker 1: No, I was going to get to the sacks.
- 5:03Speaker 2: But anyway, you know, when you have a guy that's
- 5:05Speaker 2: involved in that many plays on the defensive side, that's
- 5:09Speaker 2: like a glue guy, isn't it. I Mean, I know
- 5:12Speaker 2: that's kind of like a hockey term whatever, but it is,
- 5:15Speaker 2: isn't it That I have a linebacker who's in all
- 5:16Speaker 2: that stuff.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Well, that's what linebackers are supposed to do.
- 5:20Speaker 3: You know, they're they're going to be the guys that
- 5:23Speaker 3: have the most tackles. And yeah, I mean he's very
- 5:26Speaker 3: much a glue guy for us, but he's also an
- 5:28Speaker 3: impact guy, you know. I mean our guys rally around him,
- 5:31Speaker 3: and he's a damn good football player. You don't necessarily
- 5:35Speaker 3: expect linebackers to have this type of production that he's
- 5:39Speaker 3: had rushing the passer. And and he's a really good
- 5:42Speaker 3: pass rusher as well, And he understands how to rush
- 5:45Speaker 3: rush the passer, and he understands how when we design
- 5:48Speaker 3: a pressure for a linebacker, he understands how it works
- 5:51Speaker 3: and what the protection is going to do to influence
- 5:54Speaker 3: things and how he has to adjust productions and all
- 5:56Speaker 3: those things. So he's a really smart football player. He's
- 6:01Speaker 3: a very discipline football player, and he's a very hard worker.
- 6:05Speaker 2: And finally, before we go to the break, how much
- 6:08Speaker 2: if an advantage for you in the secondary, imagine you're
- 6:12Speaker 2: playing defensive back or safety, is it to have your
- 6:16Speaker 2: front group of players making creating pressure, getting sacks, making
- 6:21Speaker 2: a cut back.
- 6:22Speaker 1: You know, deliver it before he wants to.
- 6:25Speaker 3: I mean sacks, interceptions, pass breakups, those kind of you know,
- 6:30Speaker 3: it's never just the secondary or the rush, you know,
- 6:33Speaker 3: just working together. You know, there's nothing better than a
- 6:36Speaker 3: coverage sack. There's nothing better than a you know, a
- 6:40Speaker 3: defensive end just winning quickly in a in a situation
- 6:44Speaker 3: where a corner is you know, on an island, to
- 6:47Speaker 3: take some pressure off the corner. So, you know, I
- 6:49Speaker 3: think that having an understanding up front what's happening behind you,
- 6:56Speaker 3: and having an understanding is a defensive back what's transpiring
- 6:59Speaker 3: up in front of you along the defensive line and
- 7:01Speaker 3: linebackers just critical to having success, you know, rushing the
- 7:05Speaker 3: passer and defending the pass. And our guys seem to
- 7:08Speaker 3: have a pretty good feel for how that works. That's
- 7:10Speaker 3: a credit to the staff and the way they teach them.
- 7:12Speaker 3: And it's a credit to our players and that the
- 7:15Speaker 3: emphasis that they've put on learning, you know, the crossover stuff,
- 7:19Speaker 3: the conceptual things that really make a difference if you
- 7:21Speaker 3: want to be a good team.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Yeah, big challenge ahead, Rice, We'll talk about that just
- 7:25Speaker 2: a moment. Jim Morrow returns. This is the Yukon football
- 7:28Speaker 2: coaches show on lear fields
