Latest / Big Iron Radio / Homelab Brief - Local Agents vs Cloud APIs: The Break-Even Math
Transcript
- 0:02Welcome to the Homelab Brief from Big Iron.
- 0:06Today, the honest breakeven math on running an AI, agent locally versus calling a cloud API for a 24-7 job.
- 0:16Quick note, this is an AI voice drawn from a Big Iron guide.
- 0:20Links below.
- 0:22Start with the cost of owning a GPU because it has two parts.
- 0:26A fixed cost amortizing the card, roughly $8 to $25 a month, depending on what you bought.
- 0:32And a variable cost idle power draw, about $2 to $5 a month for a small card left loaded.
- 0:39Both of those run, whether or not the card is actually serving a single request.
- 0:45The cloud side is the opposite shape.
- 0:47A comparable small model runs about $0.14 to $0.30 per thousand typical requests, and it costs exactly nothing when idle.
- 0:56Linear with usage, zero floor.
- 0:59So put those together.
- 1:00At low to moderate Homelab volume tens to low thousands of requests a day on a card you bought just for this.
- 1:08The cloud API usually wins on pure economics.
- 1:12That idle draw and amortization are hard to beat when the card mostly sits there.
- 1:18Local wins decisively in two cases.
- 1:20One, the GPU is already running other Homelab workloads in Mitch, Frigate, Whisper, and the LLM job is just marginal utilization on hardware that's already spinning.
- 1:33Two, your volume is genuinely high and sustained, enough that the per-request cloud cost overtakes the fixed cost.
- 1:40And the honest footnote.
- 1:43Most Homelabbers who run local aren't doing it to save money they're doing it for privacy, control, and no rate limits.
- 1:51That's a fine reason.
- 1:53Just don't tell yourself it's cheaper when, for a dedicated card at low volume, it usually isn't.
- 1:59The full cost models in the show notes.
- 2:01That's your brief.
