- 0:00Speaker 1: And now we turn to the Springfield Sun to bring
- 0:04you news from in and around Washington County. Your reader
- 0:07today is Amy Jones Timmony. We begin with the edition
- 0:11dated Thursday, January eighth, twenty twenty five, and we will
- 0:18start with a year in review, which is actually in
- 0:22two parts, the first one from December thirty first, twenty
- 0:27twenty five by Jane Reid Climb. Editor's note, This is
- 0:32the first of a two part series. This week we
- 0:34review the top stories from the first six months of
- 0:37twenty twenty five. Next week we will look back at
- 0:40the second half of the year. The start of a
- 0:43new year is not just a time to look ahead
- 0:45and make resolutions to live better. It's also a time
- 0:48to look back at the year we just completed. Each year,
- 0:51The Sun looks back at our top stories of the year,
- 0:53and twenty twenty five is worth remembering. Many of our
- 0:57top stories were ongoing and spend week and months from
- 1:01start to finish. Our top story span a variety of issues,
- 1:06including court news, vicious dogs, a tornado, flooding, murder, and
- 1:12a big robbery. Looking at our top stories for January
- 1:18twenty twenty five, two of the three began in twenty
- 1:20twenty four. The first of those was the arrest of
- 1:23Roosevelt Davis. The third, Davis was charged with the December
- 1:27twenty seventh murder of Kadishah Birch in her home on
- 1:30Claybrook Avenue in Springfield. The indictment handed down in February
- 1:34also charges Davis with the attempted murder of Frianus Campbell,
- 1:38first degree burglary, and two counts of first degree once
- 1:41and endangered. In May, while incarcerated in the Marion County
- 1:45Detention Center or MCDZ awaiting trial, Davis was escorted from
- 1:51their recreation yard to the maximum Security housing unit. Without warning.
- 1:55Davis charged Sergeant John Mullins, striking him in the face
- 1:58and knocking him backwards. He then assaulted Lieutenant Rebecca Streebol,
- 2:02hitting her repeatedly in the face in the head. Deputy
- 2:06Stephen Feast was also struck while attempting to assist Lieutenant Streebol.
- 2:10All three mc DC's staff members were taken to Springview
- 2:14Hospital for evaluation. Sergeant Mullins and Deputy Fees were treated
- 2:18and released. Lieutenant Streeble was statflighted to the University of
- 2:22Louisville Hospital for further evaluation due to head injuries and
- 2:25has since its return to duty at the Detention Center.
- 2:29As a result of this incident, additional charges of third
- 2:32degree assault and made assault on corrections employees and second
- 2:35degree assault were filed through the Marion County Attorney's Office.
- 2:39On a lighter note, the second noteworthy story from January
- 2:43was the court's ruling on the lawsuit filed against the
- 2:45City of Willisbourg by SNS Rentals. The story started in
- 2:49early spring twenty twenty four when sn S Rentals proposed
- 2:53the development of a subdivision adjacent to Willisburg Community Park.
- 3:00Later in the year, the Planning Commission approved a third
- 3:03proposal for the subdivision, and the third proposal only one
- 3:06lot would be accessed through the park. The others would
- 3:09be accessed by Coloy's Lane, which is a county road.
- 3:13The third big story from January twenty twenty five was
- 3:16a true breaking news story, the bank robbery at the
- 3:19Willisburg branch of Springfield State Blake. The big news in
- 3:24February highlighted flooding around the county and a couple of
- 3:28fatalities from the flood Flutters flooding returned to the headlines
- 3:31a number of times throughout the spring and summer. March
- 3:36brought the first liquor license to Washington County. In November
- 3:40of twenty twenty four, Washington County residents voted to change
- 3:43the status of the county from dry to wet. The
- 3:46first license was issued to Corner Market in Willisburg in
- 3:50March of twenty twenty five. April brought more flooding. It
- 3:54also brought a furry addition to the Washington County Sheriff's Office,
- 3:58as Sheriff Jerry Pinkston entered is the county's first canine officer, Viper,
- 4:03and a handler, Deputy Novah Settles, to the county. Viper
- 4:07had sniffed out and assisted with the arrest of several
- 4:10suspects since joining the department. Viper was a gift from
- 4:13the Greater Harden County Drug Task Force and had previously
- 4:17worked with the Melton County Sheriff's Deputy. Deputy Settled trained
- 4:21with Viper and Viper's previous handler prior to Viper going
- 4:25on duty in Washington County. A surprising headline in May
- 4:29was the five vehicle collision on Main Street in downtown
- 4:32Springfield to recap the series of events that day. Vehicle
- 4:36one was traveling east when a rear ended Vehicle two,
- 4:39causing that vehicle to cross into oncoming traffic, colliding with
- 4:43the westbound vehicle three, which then veered into a fourth
- 4:46vehicle parked on the north side of the street. Meanwhile,
- 4:50Vehicle one veered into vehicle five, which was parked along
- 4:53the south side of Main Street. Three individuals were transported
- 4:57to local hospitals. The driver of the U S one
- 5:00was arrested by Springfield Police and charged with driving on
- 5:04a suspended or revoked license. June brought still more stories
- 5:08about flooding to the county. June also brought the tragic
- 5:12story of an e F two tornado touching down on
- 5:15Long Run Road in eastern Washington County. The tornado took
- 5:19the life of one man and sent fourteen to Ephram
- 5:21mcdeal Hospital in Danville. From there, several were transported to
- 5:25the University of Kentucky for treatment. Following the storm, concerns
- 5:30were raised about the county's warning system and residents not
- 5:33receiving warning prior to the tornado touching down. The National
- 5:37Weather Service said that they were watching a developing storm
- 5:40in the area, but it appeared minor on the radar,
- 5:43A spokesperson said. By the time the radar came around again,
- 5:46it was a full blown tornado and the warning went out,
- 5:50but it was too late for residents to move to
- 5:53basements or other safe shelter areas. And now for part two.
- 6:03July twenty twenty five brought us the conviction of Brooks
- 6:06Hawk for the murder of Crystal Rogers. Rogers went missing
- 6:10after a date with Halc her boyfriend and father of
- 6:13one of her children. She has never been found. July
- 6:16also brought a funny story. A reader inquired to the
- 6:19Son about a sign and its meaning. The sign is
- 6:22located at the roundabout at the intersection of Barstown Road
- 6:25in Highway fifty five by fifty five by McDonald's. It
- 6:29is a simple question mark on a blue background with
- 6:32an arrow pointing to her downtown. The sign. Took on
- 6:35the challenge and began asking when the sign was erected
- 6:38and what it meant. Here comes the funny part. No
- 6:41one we asked was aware of the sign's existence, and
- 6:43a Google search revealed multiple meetings for the sign. Finally,
- 6:47we received an answer from the Department of transportation. The
- 6:50question mark simply means information or tourist information, and although
- 6:55local residents were not aware of the sign, the department
- 6:58provided a photo of that inner section from twenty thirteen,
- 7:02clearly showing the sign. Highlights from August include the beginning
- 7:07of a string of vicious dog attacks. After a lady
- 7:10in Springfield was attacked by two pit bulls when checking
- 7:13her mail. Citizens asked the city of Springfield to take
- 7:16action to prevent future attacks. So speaking to the city council,
- 7:20described being out for a walk or job and being
- 7:23chased by dogs running loose. Soon after the Springfield attack,
- 7:27a dog attack to Washington County Sheriff's deputy when he
- 7:30went to serve a warrant. More reports of vicious dogs
- 7:33and attacks followed, including one in December in which police
- 7:37Chief Sue Mud was injured. September brought the announcement of
- 7:41Senator Jimmy Higden's retirement from the Senate. Higden released the
- 7:45statement that he would not run in twenty twenty six.
- 7:48To date, six Republicans have filed to run for his
- 7:51seat in the Kentucky State Senate. Also in September, Washington
- 7:55County schools began construction on the latest phase of the
- 7:58athletic complex at Washington County High School. Construction began on
- 8:03a new baseball and a new softball field, tennis and
- 8:07pickleball courts, and additional parking. We were expecting EMS to
- 8:12move into its new building in September, but delays and
- 8:15installation of internet and other necessary amenities delayed the move
- 8:19until October. The new Emergency Services building is located behind
- 8:23the head Start building, next to the hotel. It houses MS,
- 8:27the Office of Emergency Management, and the Springfield Washington County
- 8:31Rescue S Club. Also in October, Addiction Recovery Care or ARC,
- 8:37announced it would be selling many of its assets and
- 8:39facilities in light of the ongoing FBI investigation. ARC would
- 8:44be partnering with sm Health Corporation to operate those facilities.
- 8:48Crown Recovery in Springfield was not part of the sale.
- 8:51Just last week, The Sun received a statement from ARC
- 8:54that the sale and merger with SMA Health would not
- 8:56be happening. ARC did not indicate a reason or who
- 9:00withdrew from the agreement. November brought the sad news of
- 9:04the passing of Springfield City councilmen and community volunteer. Willie
- 9:08ellery Ellery served thirteen terms on the city council and
- 9:13volunteered across the community to enrich the lives of all.
- 9:17After his passing, his wife, Joanne was appointed to fill
- 9:20out his term on the city council. Although looking back
- 9:24at the year just completed is enlightening, now the son
- 9:27looks ahead to twenty twenty six, wondering what this new
- 9:31year will bring to our pages. Er later. Man indicted
- 9:38for Springfield robbery and assault by Jane Reid Kline January seventh,
- 9:42twenty twenty five. Carlos Martinez, thirty five, of Earlier Kentucky,
- 9:46was indicted on multiple charges, including assault and robbery by
- 9:50a Washington grand jury of December seventeenth. Charges in the
- 9:54indictment are first degree robbery, the first degree burglary, the

- 10:09or about October twenty fifth. Bond for Martinez was set

- 10:56dollars full cash. Chelsea brushy y seven of Bardstown was
- 11:01indided by the grand jury for possession of methandzhetamines, possession

- 11:09was set at five thousand dollars unsecured. The grand jury
- 11:13handed down a two count indictment for Malachi R. Pont Mendoza.
- 11:18Mendoza twenty two of Versailles is charged with first degree
- 11:21wanton indagerment and driving on a DUI suspended license first offense.
- 11:27Bond was set at one thousand dollars. Francisco Crinteras, forty eight,
- 11:31of Willisburg, was indicted for sest greater than one thousand
- 11:35dollars but less than ten thousand dollars. The theft is
- 11:38said to have occurred in early October. Bond was set
- 11:42at one thousand dollars full cash. Editor's note, an indictment
- 11:46is merely a charge. All defendants are presumed innocent until
- 11:50proven guilty and the appropriate court of law. Lynn Shelburne,
- 11:57education leader and business owner, announced Senate run by Jane Recline.
- 12:02January seventh, twenty twenty sixth Sutherland shelburn vice chair of

- 14:03seat is currently held by Jimmy Hegden of Lebanon, who

- 14:09Quote I feel called by God to run, behar said.
- 14:12He said his faith is a driving force in all
- 14:14he does. Barris served as the Elk Creek Magistrate on
- 14:17the Spencer County Fiscal Court. While in that position, he
- 14:21chaired a committee that rewrote the Spencer County Administrative Code
- 14:24and the Ethics Code. After leading office, he spoke about
- 14:27the Ethics Code before the Kentucky State Legislature. During his
- 14:31term as magistrate, Barrick said he learned that Spencer County
- 14:35was not quote work ready. He formed and cheered a
- 14:38committee to address the issue, and Spencer is now a
- 14:41fully certified work ready community. The Bear's biggest accomplishments came
- 14:46after the death of his eighteen month old son in
- 14:48twenty fifteen. His son, Jackson, was killed in a tragic
- 14:52accident where a vehicle backed over the child. Bears became
- 14:55a strong advocate for children, working with Kids and Cars
- 14:58initiative advocated for backup cameras on all vehicles to prevent
- 15:03similar tragedies in the future. After Jackson's death, someone requested
- 15:08copies of the autopsy photos. Bears strongly objected to the
- 15:11release of the photos and worked with the state legislature
- 15:14to secure the passage of Jack's Law banning the release
- 15:17of autopsy photos without a court order. The measure passed
- 15:21ninety seven to three in the House. Also after his
- 15:24son's death, Bear started a memorial fund for his son.
- 15:27He said he did not know exactly how the funds
- 15:29would be used, but he wanted to honor Jackson. When
- 15:32he learned that the Spencer County baseball program would have
- 15:35to turn down a grant to put lights on the
- 15:37ballfields at Rage Jule Park because they did not have
- 15:39matching fung, he knew what he wanted to do. He
- 15:42donated the eighteen thousand dollars needed from the memorial fund.
- 15:47Spencer County then honored Jackson with a plaque at the
- 15:49park and named the ball fields Jackson Field. Bears looked
- 15:53ahead at the Senate campaign. He said one of his
- 15:56biggest issues is education and he hopes to see improvements
- 15:59in that day. He is also concerned to how the
- 16:02education system will progress with the elimination of the US
- 16:05Department of Education, placing control back at the state and
- 16:09local level. Bears was born and raised in Saint Louis,
