- 0:00Welcome back to Storytime with Lucky Podcast.
- 0:05Today we're going to read Stanley's No Hick Machine.
- 0:12Stanley stretched. He loved his quiet mornings in his basket with a cup of tea.
- 0:21Everyone left at eight o'clock and a dog could do what a dog wanted to do.
- 0:28Stanley sat up The old clock in the hole said Boing Every morning but it never
- 0:34said Hick Stanley cocked and
- 0:37he Hick There was again Stanley put down his tee And dug under his pillow.
- 0:49He always kept Finding out Bad there And a dog never knows when he will have
- 1:02to find out about something.
- 1:05Hick! It's... No, Stanley pulled out his finding out her and put it on.
- 1:16Snoop down the hole. Hick! Sound... The sound was getting louder.
- 1:23Hick!
- 1:25It seemed to be coming from just about.
- 1:30Stanley opened the front of the clock. Nothing strange in there.
- 1:34He looked under the clock, and behind it, still nothing.
- 1:40There was a small door in the front clock. The hiccuping seemed to be coming from inside.
- 1:47When a dog is finding out, he has to be brave.
- 1:50Stanley gave the door a tug. Nothing. He tugged again as hard as he could.
- 1:58Something tiny flew out of the clock and landed in a potted fern.
- 2:08It sailed down the hall and it landed in a potted fern.
- 2:14A pair of little legs kicked as the something tried to free itself.
- 2:22Are you all right? Stanley asked sentiently.
- 2:27Stanley said the something. Perhaps a cup of tea?
- 2:33Stanley, it's me. Bill! Stanley gave the legs a tug.
- 2:41Out popped Bill the mouse. Bill, what are you doing in the clock?
- 2:46I was trying to hide my cheecox.
- 2:50Explained Bill. I had the hiccups for three days, and it's so noisy I can't even sleep.
- 2:57I went to the clock, and so nobody could hear.
- 3:03But, hick, but, but, but, hick. I guess it didn't work. Hick.
- 3:12I could currently hear you, saying, said Stanley. Three days? That's terrible.
- 3:19Can't you get rid of them? I tried everything. Check, check, check.
- 3:25Groaned bill i tried hopping on one foot
- 3:28wiggling both ears i tried
- 3:32hopping on one ear and wiggling both feet i even stood at my nose and sang mice
- 3:40of england backwards but nothing will nothing worked and nothing will.
- 3:50Stanley scratched his nose. But haven't you tried?
- 3:57Ding, ding, oh. The doorbell chimed.
- 4:02My child, the cat, had come for her morning tea.
- 4:07Uh, here's my child, says Stanley. I'm sure she'll have lots of ideas. Oh, dear. Yeah.
- 4:15Well, what always works for cats is the chasing mouse cure, said Mitchell.
- 4:24You get a nice little mouse and chase him.
- 4:28Once around the table, then whiskers went pale.
- 4:34And then those whiskers went pale.
- 4:39Really, Mitchell, said Stanley. Haven't you anything else?
- 4:45Of course, said Mitchell. I'm sorry, Bill.
- 4:48Take a big brace and you stick up your tail and then with both paws,
- 4:56I have a cousin, who's a rat, said Bill.
- 5:01"'Well, well,' said Stanley, "'em, isn't this helping us?
- 5:08Why don't we check my old book of cures?' "'Fine,' said Rachel.
- 5:16"'Fine,' said Bill.
- 5:18Stanley kept his book of cures under his pillow, next to the finding out bag.
- 5:26A dog never knows when you have to cure someone.
- 5:33Stanley put on his reading glasses, headaches, head scratching, healing hiccups.
- 5:40Here it is. Just have the Hiccup put a paper bag to his mouth and blow.
- 5:48We'll need a paper bag. Here's one, said my troll. Okay.
- 5:57Now, Bill, just put your mouth on one end.
- 6:06One end? Bill, Bill, where are you?
- 6:11Ah, number two, called Stanley. Have the hiccup put a sugar cube in his mouth?
- 6:18Let me out, cried Mitral. That didn't work, Bill. Unfler, mumbled Bill.
- 6:25What? Unfler? Bill jumped out, pounding him on both cheeks.
- 6:31It doesn't say that you have to do that, said Mitral.
- 6:37Number three, called Stanley, when Bill had managed to spit out the cube.
- 6:45Take a large gas of water and drink it. Let me out, cried Nitro. Here you go, Bill.
- 6:52She gave him a pat on the back. Good old Bill. Bill?
- 6:59Nothing is going to help me, moaned Bill.
- 7:03But Stanley had been thinking, now don't give up.
- 7:07He cried what you need is a no-hit machine stanley kept rey stanley kept his
- 7:16making kit under his pillow next to the finding out bag,
- 7:21the book of cures a dog never knows when he'll have to make something,
- 7:29I'll help, cried my jaw Don't you think you helped enough, grumbled Bill Come
- 7:37on you two There's work to be done, says Stanley,
- 7:43At last, the new knowledge machine was ready Stanley placed on the table,
- 7:56Well, how does it work?
- 8:00Asked Bill.
- 8:01It's very simple, explained Stanley. You blow into this end here as hard as you can.
- 8:09Then you ring the little bell here, shout bye, gins at the top of your voice,
- 8:18then run back and begin all over again.
- 8:25Ring, ring. Bill looked at the no-hit machine. Then he looked at Stanley.
- 8:31If this doesn't work, I'm going back to the clock.
- 8:36Stanley and Nigel sat on the sofa to be out of the way.
- 8:41They drank a cup of tea so they'll not be stalling at Bill.
- 8:50And for a long time, the only stones were Bill's little feet running ring by Jinx.
- 8:59At first, there was a lot of ringing by Jinx, and after a while,
- 9:09his little feet went more slowly.
- 9:12Run, run, run, ring by Jinx.
- 9:17Then the room was still.
- 9:20Ring, ring, ring. Bye, yin.
- 9:23Eh, you got the tea, my true? That would be lovely. Thanks, Tommy.
- 9:29Stanley put down his cup of tea.
- 9:33I think that's the last we shall hear Bill's hiccups, he whispered.
- 9:38That's good, but why are we whispering, whispered Mitra.
- 9:45Stanley took Mitra's paw, and they tiptoed, and pulled up next to the low-hicking
- 9:55machine, which filled the mouse fast asleep.
- 9:59Stanley covered Bill with a handkerchief and Mitral picked up her hat to go home.
- 10:08Stanley, she whispered, where did you get the idea? With a little machine.
- 10:16Stanley smiled and pointed to his book of cures.
- 10:20Number four, he said, get the
- 10:22hiccuper to go to sleep. You mean you just tired him out? She whispered.
- 10:32Stanley smiled as Mitchell let herself out and went down the lane.
- 10:40She stretched himself upon his strange lumpy pillow.
- 10:47Ah, he looked his quiet afternoon.
- 10:52No one was about, and a dog could do a dog once again.
- 11:00The end, and thank you for listening.
