- 0:02Speaker 1: Hey, look who's here. Trepor May with us. Good to
- 0:05Speaker 1: see it, Trepper may Day, may Day, bron Kratz and
- 0:09Speaker 1: May with you. Okay, before we dive into the nitty gritty, Kratz,
- 0:14Speaker 1: I just mentioned this to you before the show and
- 0:17Speaker 1: just wanted to get your quick thoughts. And then Trevor
- 0:19Speaker 1: can follow since he's pitched in Philly. Mike Bassett has
- 0:22Speaker 1: been on the show before. A former big leaguer. It
- 0:24Speaker 1: does a really nice job Rangers, broadcast radio, the whole deal.
- 0:27Speaker 1: He just randomly throw darts at Philly fans for leaving
- 0:31Speaker 1: games early.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't quite understand that. It was kind of like,
- 0:37Speaker 2: you know, the hoop Lob opening day, we got all
- 0:39Speaker 2: these people, wasn't quite sold out like it was in Philly.
- 0:43Speaker 2: But they said he said something about they leave early.
- 0:46Speaker 2: I'll be honest. They blue collar Philly fans. They leave
- 0:50Speaker 2: it early. They rarely even show up late either like
- 0:53Speaker 2: they're there for all nine innings because they want a
- 0:56Speaker 2: reason to get on their team, good or bad.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not been my experience having been I was
- 1:04Speaker 3: drafted by him. That was not what I was told
- 1:08Speaker 3: to expect. You know, they love tailgating. There too. You're right,
- 1:11Speaker 3: they're there way early before the game. Man, they're there
- 1:13Speaker 3: early for day games. They're beating the team, like the
- 1:16Speaker 3: way team to the park. I don't know where they
- 1:18Speaker 3: came from. Hey, but I will say one thing. If
- 1:21Speaker 3: you want to light a fire on her fan base,
- 1:24Speaker 3: all you gotta do is, especially the Phillies fan base,
- 1:27Speaker 3: you just say you guys leave early.
- 1:28Speaker 4: And they heard him.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Ears pair carup all across the city, So maybe there
- 1:32Speaker 3: was maybe he's just playing five D chests and we're
- 1:35Speaker 3: just we're I are playing checkers.
- 1:37Speaker 1: We're all talking about him. That is true. You just
- 1:39Speaker 1: took a shot through a dart and it was from
- 1:41Speaker 1: the weekend, and I've still seen it carrying, so I
- 1:44Speaker 1: figured we'd bring it up for a moment. I didn't
- 1:46Speaker 1: give it much thought over the weekend because I was like,
- 1:49Speaker 1: that doesn't even make sense. It's just not a fan
- 1:51Speaker 1: base that you would ever put that towards. And same here.
- 1:54Speaker 1: I've covered the many Phillies games, been there a ton.
- 1:56Speaker 1: I never got the vibe that the place was the
- 2:00Speaker 1: classic La crowd where you'd be like, hey, they're late
- 2:02Speaker 1: from the traffic, they're leaving early from the traffic, right,
- 2:05Speaker 1: you want to make that case cool. Philly doesn't have
- 2:09Speaker 1: the traffic level either of some of the cities that
- 2:11Speaker 1: we're talking about. There's traffic, but it's not crazy. It's
- 2:14Speaker 1: relative here, I mean, Kratz, you would probably agree.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Marlins fans they leave her well, I guess they just
- 2:19Speaker 2: don't show up. So I guess they're like they leave
- 2:22Speaker 2: early for warm ups. How about that?
- 2:24Speaker 1: Not your words, Sandy ol Countra's words, but now your
- 2:27Speaker 1: words too.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Sandy's thrown today, so I forgot how to bring it up.
- 2:30Speaker 1: That is a good call, all right. Now, let's get
- 2:32Speaker 1: to the big series of the week's charge that well,
- 2:40Speaker 1: Trevor Miguel Rojas can do it all, as he pitched
- 2:44Speaker 1: in a fourteen to two beat down for the Dodgers
- 2:47Speaker 1: over the Toronto Blue Jays, a rematch of last year's
- 2:50Speaker 1: World Series, doing it regular season style, and the Blue
- 2:53Speaker 1: Jays have now lost five games in a row. But
- 2:56Speaker 1: it has to bite and hurt even more when you've
- 3:00Speaker 1: got Biggy Rowe pitching at the end of the game.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Of course, he was the one who saved the season
- 3:04Speaker 1: there for the Dodgers in Game seven in the ninth inning,
- 3:08Speaker 1: and as far as offense. I mean, this is a
- 3:11Speaker 1: historic run right now for the Dodgers on this road
- 3:13Speaker 1: trip too. You had two homers and four hits for
- 3:16Speaker 1: Dalton rushing, Kim contributed a couple knocks. You had Otani
- 3:19Speaker 1: going along in a very Otani way to center field.
- 3:22Speaker 1: What else? We had Tasker Hernandez against his old team,
- 3:26Speaker 1: Freddie Freeman with a long bomb. This was essentially a nightmare,
- 3:30Speaker 1: right If I said to you, Trevor as a Blue
- 3:32Speaker 1: Jays you know, if I said to a Blue Jays Van, hey,
- 3:35Speaker 1: what would be your worst case scenario for the first
- 3:37Speaker 1: Dodgers Blue Jays matchup after the World Series, They'd be like,
- 3:40Speaker 1: we get clobbered. Our pitching staff is in shambles. Everybody
- 3:45Speaker 1: homers that we don't want a homer, and Miguel Rojas
- 3:47Speaker 1: pitched in the game too.
- 3:50Speaker 4: You're forgetting one big element too.
- 3:52Speaker 3: They're like, if we could really quickly just get swept
- 3:54Speaker 3: by the White Sox the series before that, would that
- 3:57Speaker 3: would really put the salt on top.
- 4:01Speaker 4: Yeah, it's slow going for the team.
- 4:04Speaker 3: A little bit of a World Series hangover, a little
- 4:07Speaker 3: bit of concern around what I considered ten days ago
- 4:12Speaker 3: one of the deeper pitching staffs going into the season.
- 4:15Speaker 3: They've had a couple Cody Ponstin was just kind of
- 4:18Speaker 3: a freak injury. And then we had the comments from
- 4:21Speaker 3: Scherzer after the Ponds injuries like, hey, let's not do
- 4:25Speaker 3: anything crazy. Let's all be smart here. No one, no
- 4:27Speaker 3: one go out on the boat anywhere or do anything weird.
- 4:29Speaker 3: We gotta try to stay healthy here. And then you know,
- 4:32Speaker 3: he comes up with a Barkin for arm yesterday. So yeah,
- 4:36Speaker 3: not a great start. Everything that can go wrong has
- 4:38Speaker 3: gone wrong for the Blue Jays. But it's funny, even
- 4:41Speaker 3: after all of this, there's still a pretty complete team,
- 4:46Speaker 3: even with the losing Alejandra Kirk to thumb surgery, Like
- 4:50Speaker 3: it's it's not how you want to start. Long, long
- 4:52Speaker 3: way to go though, and still a very talented team
- 4:55Speaker 3: with a lot of really good players that haven't gotten going.
- 4:58Speaker 4: Yet at all.
- 4:58Speaker 3: So if you can just tread water, I mean, I've
- 5:01Speaker 3: been on a team that started oh to nine.
- 5:03Speaker 4: It can be.
- 5:05Speaker 3: It can be a mindset that sticks with you if
- 5:07Speaker 3: you don't if you don't change it and change it
- 5:09Speaker 3: quickly somehow. So I know later on the show we're
- 5:13Speaker 3: gonna talk about another team trying to get themselves going
- 5:15Speaker 3: and trying some new stuff. So they're they're due, They're
- 5:18Speaker 3: due for some good luck. Uh, and I'm paying attention
- 5:21Speaker 3: to it. But lat having the Dodgers come in on
- 5:23Speaker 3: a historic heater, at least in the box after a tough,
- 5:28Speaker 3: tough road series against the team you're supposed to beat
- 5:30Speaker 3: every day, it's.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Tough to swallow.
- 5:33Speaker 1: There.
- 5:33Speaker 3: There's it's an inflection point. They gotta they gotta figure
- 5:36Speaker 3: something out. They got to get get the fires lit
- 5:38Speaker 3: a little bit.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I think this is how we're supposed to speak
- 5:42Speaker 2: in the Blue Jays locker room as fans. You watch
- 5:46Speaker 2: it and you go, well, maybe the Blue Jays are
- 5:49Speaker 2: the twenty twenty four Blue Jays and the twenty twenty
- 5:51Speaker 2: five blue Jays are just a just a figment of
- 5:55Speaker 2: our imagination now, like, oh, they just had a great
- 5:58Speaker 2: year and now the you know, the real Blue Jays,
- 6:01Speaker 2: the twenty twenty four Blue Jays are the team that's
- 6:04Speaker 2: gonna show up this year.
- 6:06Speaker 4: No, that's not what's gonna happen.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Look, this team has doubled down on the fact that
- 6:12Speaker 2: it puts together really good at bats by continuing to
- 6:17Speaker 2: keep this lineup together, continuing to make sure they're in
- 6:22Speaker 2: a good spot that say, you know what, when we're
- 6:24Speaker 2: putting good at bats together, when we're scoring runs as
- 6:27Speaker 2: a team, we're gonna have a pitching staff that was
- 6:30Speaker 2: looking like it was going to start like going out
- 6:33Speaker 2: the door, Bassett soon, Gosman, Barrios. We didn't know what
- 6:37Speaker 2: was going to happen. Bieber at the end of the season,
- 6:40Speaker 2: didn't know he was going to accept his player option.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Now you look at it and you go, it's good
- 6:44Speaker 2: they have this depth because this team has been made
- 6:48Speaker 2: on pitching in defense, and the lineup just showed up
- 6:52Speaker 2: last year. They showed up in ways that it was
- 6:55Speaker 2: a really team lineup. So they have to get back
- 6:58Speaker 2: to that. They have to get back to team at
- 7:00Speaker 2: bats and clean defense because right now they're starting pitching
- 7:05Speaker 2: is going to need to be picked up by their bullpen,
- 7:07Speaker 2: which had a pretty big road to hoe when they
- 7:14Speaker 2: When you lose Sureser that early in a game, you
- 7:17Speaker 2: expect him, you know, expect him to go nine, but
- 7:19Speaker 2: you expect him to at least give you five. It's
- 7:22Speaker 2: a tough way to start a series against a team
- 7:24Speaker 2: that was swinging really well, but The biggest issue is
- 7:27Speaker 2: now they're into that bullpen. Anytime you get into the
- 7:29Speaker 2: bullpen for six plus innings in a three game series,
- 7:34Speaker 2: advantage Dodgers in this case, and they were already hot.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Now it's another big advantage to them. So they're going
- 7:41Speaker 2: to need a big They're gonna be a big outing tonight.
- 7:47Speaker 1: With over thirty five million downloads, what is the number

- 8:40Speaker 1: There are hot tickets across the country, so make sure
- 8:43Speaker 1: you go to Sea Geek. They will take care of you. Trevor,
- 8:47Speaker 1: where are you at with the World Series hangover? I
- 8:49Speaker 1: know you mentioned it in your first response, but Toronto
- 8:53Speaker 1: has a good amount of the same pitching returning. Then
- 8:56Speaker 1: they added some names. Of course, it was I don't
- 8:58Speaker 1: know what you'd call it, but more freak accident there
- 9:01Speaker 1: for Cody Ponce chersiers back. You had to leave the
- 9:04Speaker 1: game early, but it sounds like he'll be okay and
- 9:06Speaker 1: not miss his next start. Trey Savage, good example of
- 9:08Speaker 1: someone who was super super extended. It was worth it.
- 9:11Speaker 1: You almost won the World Series, but it's not surprising
- 9:15Speaker 1: that he gets hurt. So where are you at with
- 9:17Speaker 1: how teams deal with that? And do you agree with
- 9:20Speaker 1: me that part of the reason why the Dodgers didn't
- 9:23Speaker 1: suffer from the World Series hangover like other teams is
- 9:25Speaker 1: that they essentially shuffled out their rotation from twenty twenty
- 9:29Speaker 1: four to twenty twenty five. A lot of the guys
- 9:31Speaker 1: that were the big names pitching for them in twenty five,
- 9:33Speaker 1: aside from maybe Yamamoto and the rotation, were not the
- 9:36Speaker 1: guys that were contributing in twenty four.
- 9:40Speaker 3: I mean they do that every year in some way,
- 9:43Speaker 3: shape or form. A lot of times it's like they
- 9:45Speaker 3: shuffle out the rotation from the regular season to the playoffs,
- 9:48Speaker 3: like they're hurt all the time. That's like their mo
- 9:52Speaker 3: They always have so much depth, but guys don't throw
- 9:55Speaker 3: full seasons and then suddenly they're ready for the playoffs.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Same thing with the bullpen, where they're covering these diamonds
- 10:01Speaker 3: of the rough too, to kind of take leverage innings
- 10:03Speaker 3: at the end of the end of games as well
- 10:05Speaker 3: towards the end of the year, and like leaning on
- 10:06Speaker 3: somebody really hard, and it's it's a it's like an expectation,
- 10:10Speaker 3: and it's what it does is that I think what
- 10:13Speaker 3: they do better than anything is like this is built
- 10:15Speaker 3: in and so they don't panic when guys get hurt
- 10:18Speaker 3: because they know, like what how this thing works for
- 10:22Speaker 3: them generally, and they have lots of depth and guys
- 10:24Speaker 3: to step.
- 10:25Speaker 4: In and to fill the role. They're just really smart.
- 10:27Speaker 4: They know how to do that.
- 10:28Speaker 3: So the reason I think, I don't want to say
- 10:30Speaker 3: they've they've been resistant, not immune, but but resistant to
- 10:34Speaker 3: it is they can handle these blows when they lose
- 10:38Speaker 3: guys early in the season and then they just they're
- 10:40Speaker 3: good enough to hang around and stay in first place
- 10:43Speaker 3: in the division and then at a little space at
- 10:45Speaker 3: the end and then get going for the playoffs. I
- 10:47Speaker 3: believe Joe Kelly has said this very publicly. A lot
- 10:50Speaker 3: is just about it's it's it's not even an unspoken secret,
- 10:53Speaker 3: it's it's an open secret, and we're just talking about
- 10:55Speaker 3: openly that you'll be back for October. Like, So, they
- 10:59Speaker 3: operate that way. It's a luxury to be able to
- 11:02Speaker 3: operate that way. But it seems like they've built their
- 11:03Speaker 3: team that way for the last half decade or so.
- 11:06Speaker 3: And it's not like you just decide to do that
- 11:08Speaker 3: one day and then it works. You have to have
- 11:10Speaker 3: it built in, and they've they've invested in their team
- 11:13Speaker 3: in a way that is going to allow them to
- 11:14Speaker 3: do it. So, but but swapping guys out like that
- 11:17Speaker 3: weren't didn't go all the way in. It's just a
- 11:19Speaker 3: unique thing that that's why it's so hard to win
- 11:21Speaker 3: back to back. It's like when you get it's already
- 11:24Speaker 3: the shortest offseason in professional sports. If you reduce it
- 11:27Speaker 3: by a month, you get three months off and then
- 11:29Speaker 3: you're playing for nine months. And that's not including you know,
- 11:32Speaker 3: guys who play winter ball and stuff, which there's a
- 11:34Speaker 3: lot of them. So it's just an all year round
- 11:37Speaker 3: sport and you got to manage it. That's why we
- 11:40Speaker 3: don't see any Dodgers playing their full team until like
- 11:43Speaker 3: March twentieth every year because they know that in order
- 11:46Speaker 3: to go back, they're going to have to give their
- 11:48Speaker 3: guys as much rest that they can give them.
- 11:50Speaker 2: It takes a lot of trust in the player. It
- 11:52Speaker 2: takes a lot of trust from the player from the
- 11:56Speaker 2: team like so it's a two way street year for
- 12:01Speaker 2: the Dodgers' rotation, there was nine guys that started seven
- 12:04Speaker 2: or more games. So an easy way to say, okay,
- 12:07Speaker 2: we don't have a World Series hangover is all these
- 12:10Speaker 2: guys were spread out. It went Yamamoto and then very
- 12:14Speaker 2: few people can guess, including me, who had the second
- 12:17Speaker 2: most starts on the team. People would say, oh, Blake
- 12:20Speaker 2: snow Tyler Glass. Now, no, it's it was Clayton Kershaw.
- 12:24Speaker 2: So they are going to need guys in the rotation
- 12:27Speaker 2: to step up to be able to keep the bullpen healthy.
- 12:30Speaker 2: But oh yeah, that bullpen added Edwin Diaz at the back.
- 12:34Speaker 2: They added more to that bullpen to say, Okay, we
- 12:39Speaker 2: may not be able to get a ton of stretch
- 12:41Speaker 2: out of our rotation because they had, like I said,
- 12:45Speaker 2: nine guys all the way down to land in nac
- 12:47Speaker 2: who made seven starts. You just need guys to come
- 12:51Speaker 2: in and do this. And it shows the depth of
- 12:54Speaker 2: the organization in the sense of that it's not just
- 12:58Speaker 2: free agents that they brought in to it's well, it's
- 13:01Speaker 2: guys from the guys from the minor leagues, guys from trades,
- 13:05Speaker 2: guys from whatever it is. They're building a team that
- 13:10Speaker 2: I'm not saying they're averse, like they're definitely immune to
- 13:15Speaker 2: World Series hangovers. It's just they understand the length of
- 13:18Speaker 2: the season is not six months. Their season is seven
- 13:22Speaker 2: months long, and everybody trusts and they're just they're a
- 13:26Speaker 2: locomotive going downhill right now.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Yeah, and some of them are living their best life
- 13:30Speaker 1: with their best friends. Trevor did you see Otani and
- 13:33Speaker 1: Yamamoto before the game hopping on the mound.
- 13:37Speaker 4: I did not see that.
- 13:39Speaker 1: But let's get a live reaction from Trevor.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Oh, it's the best. I don't know what they're doing,
- 13:53Speaker 3: maybe just trying to relive it. But that's what little
- 13:58Speaker 3: kids do. You're always I mean dry runs, you know,
- 14:01Speaker 3: Kratzy knows just like dry hacks.
- 14:03Speaker 4: You swing.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Everyone's like, yeah, how many times you swing today? One
- 14:06Speaker 3: hundred times with my bad and about five hundred times
- 14:08Speaker 3: with my ghost bat.
- 14:11Speaker 4: That's what we do. We just do.
- 14:13Speaker 3: We just go through our motion constantly because it's the
- 14:15Speaker 3: most natural thing in the world does And that takes
- 14:18Speaker 3: me back to being ten years old in the backyard imagining,
- 14:22Speaker 3: imagining game Game seven, World Series, kind of like last time,
- 14:26Speaker 3: last last year pitching though fortunately you didn't want to
- 14:31Speaker 3: be the picture in that situation last year. But it's
- 14:34Speaker 3: what we do. It's what we do. They having fun
- 14:36Speaker 3: love to see it.
- 14:37Speaker 1: To me, that was like taking some little leaguers on
- 14:41Speaker 1: the fields and you have like the pictures, and the
- 14:44Speaker 1: pictures are like, oh yeah, let's run on the mound
- 14:46Speaker 1: and simulate like we're in the World Series. Dodgers and
- 14:50Speaker 1: Blue Jays, except it's Yamamoto and show Hey o Tani,
- 14:54Speaker 1: very cool video. If you're listening to the podcast, I
- 14:56Speaker 1: would encourage you to go fourteen minutes into the YouTube
- 14:59Speaker 1: version of this show and check it out. Hey, we're back.
- 15:03Speaker 1: What was your take, Trevor from the weekend for Matt Chapman. So,
- 15:08Speaker 1: first of all, he had an uncharacteristic four errors or
- 15:12Speaker 1: he has four errors on the season. A couple errors
- 15:14Speaker 1: in that one game were charged against his account that
- 15:17Speaker 1: he felt were more Casey Schmidt's ball, but you know,
- 15:20Speaker 1: he said he took accountability for. Also the base running mistake,
- 15:24Speaker 1: three run deficit ninth inning gets caught at second. Tony
- 15:28Speaker 1: Bytello's manager said that there's actually been two other incidents
- 15:31Speaker 1: behind closed doors like the one captured on camera between
- 15:34Speaker 1: Chapman and Casey Schmidt. So if you'd also like to
- 15:37Speaker 1: comment on the manager really like living out the entire
- 15:39Speaker 1: reality show, Tony Bytello has dominated like these mini segments
- 15:43Speaker 1: that we're doing with his soundbites.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Yeah, it's an interesting situation, an interesting situation that, to
- 15:51Speaker 3: be honest, I was pretty excited to see how this hall,
- 15:54Speaker 3: this whole dynamic was going to come together because historically
- 15:58Speaker 3: to talk about Fotello at the out of the gate.
- 16:01Speaker 3: He's been pretty candid, and I know that's refreshing in
- 16:06Speaker 3: a lot of ways for media because you know, you
- 16:09Speaker 3: get canned answers quite a bit, and you talk to
- 16:12Speaker 3: them constantly.
- 16:13Speaker 4: I believe.
- 16:15Speaker 3: AJ was brought up the other day and on the
- 16:17Speaker 3: show that you know, you're talking to the manager three
- 16:19Speaker 3: times a day, or the media is talking to the
- 16:22Speaker 3: managers talking to the media three times a day, so
- 16:23Speaker 3: you kind of like sometimes you're lelding some candid answers
- 16:26Speaker 3: or you're making stuff up just to be interesting. But
- 16:30Speaker 3: he's been pretty open about what's going on behind closed
- 16:32Speaker 3: doors already, which is something that is like, is not
- 16:34Speaker 3: a Major League Baseball thing. Usually it's like, let's sleep
- 16:37Speaker 3: coast to vest. We got to keep this door opaque,
- 16:40Speaker 3: not a screen door. So it's interesting, but weird out
- 16:45Speaker 3: of chatman. It's not stuff we're used to seeing from him.
- 16:48Speaker 4: I don't know, I don't know what's going on.
- 16:50Speaker 6: So that kind of the idea of deploying our players
- 16:54Speaker 6: in a way that maximizes positive outcomes by creating the
- 16:57Speaker 6: most favorable matchups that we can is a term, you
- 16:59Speaker 6: know that that I would call optimization, and I think
- 17:02Speaker 6: that's synthesizing analytical information. It's synthesizing the real time feedback
- 17:06Speaker 6: that we would be getting from our players and our
- 17:07Speaker 6: coaches who are interacting with each other every single day
- 17:10Speaker 6: to ensure that we're doing that and making sure that
- 17:11Speaker 6: we're not leaving wins on the table.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Craig Breslo, who is running the Red Sox, that's putting
- 17:17Speaker 1: everyone to sleep. And this is GMS, this is a
- 17:22Speaker 1: former player. Trevor's loving it. Okay, Trevor, so help me
- 17:25Speaker 1: bridge the gap here because this quote went viral. The
- 17:27Speaker 1: Red Sox are up to a poor start. We're about
- 17:29Speaker 1: to talk about them and their beef with Contrares, but
- 17:31Speaker 1: also we'll expand that into the Red Sox at two
- 17:35Speaker 1: and eight. When you hear that, do you feel like
- 17:39Speaker 1: that's what should be said from front offices or should
- 17:43Speaker 1: they be speaking to the fans a little bit more?
- 17:48Speaker 3: That is not a very digestible way of saying it. No,
- 17:52Speaker 3: and that is, you know, it's a skill to be
- 17:54Speaker 3: able to communicate. It's not a very complicated thing. It's
- 17:58Speaker 3: like we're trying to make put guys some positions to
- 18:00Speaker 3: be successful as much as human I possible using numbers.
- 18:04Speaker 4: Everyone's doing it.
- 18:05Speaker 3: He just it's almost like he said it in the
- 18:09Speaker 3: in the most technical way possible.
- 18:12Speaker 4: Uh.
- 18:12Speaker 3: The only word that was left out of there in
- 18:14Speaker 3: terms of corporate speak is synergies. So I'm glad we
- 18:17Speaker 3: didn't hear that.
- 18:19Speaker 4: I I don't I hear it.
- 18:23Speaker 3: I know what he means, and I that is the
- 18:26Speaker 3: That is a good way of approaching. There's a lot
- 18:28Speaker 3: of teams doing a lot of good things in that way,
- 18:30Speaker 3: but the timing and the market and the fan base
- 18:33Speaker 3: that you have is not gonna want to hear that.
- 18:37Speaker 3: And maybe there's other fan bases that would like.
- 18:39Speaker 4: To hear that.
- 18:39Speaker 3: That would be more you know, it's more exciting. I
- 18:42Speaker 3: found it sounds like something's happening for the teams that
- 18:44Speaker 3: really haven't changed a lot or maybe behind everybody else.
- 18:47Speaker 4: Boston Red Sox are not one of them.
- 18:48Speaker 3: Uh, and Bres really really he went for it. I mean,
- 18:51Speaker 3: I got to give credit where credits do. As a
- 18:52Speaker 3: Nerd myself, I mean, if you going full nerd on TV,
- 18:57Speaker 3: is even twenty twenty six still pretty at this point.
- 19:01Speaker 1: It's two fans. That's the thing. The press conference is
- 19:03Speaker 1: for journalists to take notes for their story for fans,
- 19:07Speaker 1: and some fans do like to get into some really
- 19:09Speaker 1: in depth analytics talk. But for the most part, you
- 19:12Speaker 1: can even do that without sounding like you're doing the
- 19:14Speaker 1: quarterly earnings report for your publicly traded company. That's what
- 19:18Speaker 1: it sounds like.
- 19:20Speaker 2: I wear my hat backwards. I don't know what they're
- 19:22Speaker 2: all gonna buy.
- 19:23Speaker 1: All. Yeah, what's the beef is the segment. It is
- 19:35Speaker 1: the perfect title for what we're about to discuss, and
- 19:37Speaker 1: it is Wilson Contreras against the Brewers. It's been going
- 19:42Speaker 1: on for a long time. He's been hit twenty four
- 19:44Speaker 1: times by pitches. So we're going to get Trevor's perspective
- 19:47Speaker 1: and Kratz's perspective pitcher and catcher. Right, he will start
- 19:52Speaker 1: with Trevor, so Contreras didn't just get hit, and also
- 19:56Speaker 1: he gets hit a lot because he kind of crabs
- 19:58Speaker 1: a plate. I'll let you comment on that how you want.
- 20:01Speaker 1: He also had some very pointed words. First of all,
- 20:03Speaker 1: he said he predicted that this was going to happen
- 20:05Speaker 1: before the game, and he said they always say this
- 20:09Speaker 1: is the quote I'm not trying to hit you. That
- 20:10Speaker 1: gets old. So next time they hit me again, I'm
- 20:13Speaker 1: going to take one of them out. That's a message
- 20:18Speaker 1: that to me sounds like a threat. Trevor, what did
- 20:20Speaker 1: you take from that? And Brandon Woodriff hitting him to
- 20:22Speaker 1: load the bases didn't seem intentional, and then them verbally
- 20:25Speaker 1: jabbing at each other until Woodriff was like, wait, I
- 20:29Speaker 1: recognize that he does this all the time and this
- 20:31Speaker 1: was going to fire his team up, so I stopped.
- 20:34Speaker 4: Yeah, well, here's the deal.
- 20:38Speaker 3: You get hit one hundred and thirty one times in
- 20:40Speaker 3: your career, you do something that makes guys throw on
- 20:44Speaker 3: the inside.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Of the plate. To you, we have a lot of
- 20:46Speaker 4: hard throwers. We had a lot of.
- 20:47Speaker 3: Sinkers in the game now, and he is a I've
- 20:52Speaker 3: had this experience. I've only faced some a couple times
- 20:54Speaker 3: in my career, and I had the experience with him
- 20:57Speaker 3: as well. Like he'll come out, he'll swing real hard
- 21:00Speaker 3: the first pitch he sees to try to like maybe
- 21:02Speaker 3: basically establish a power dynamic.
- 21:04Speaker 4: It's like part of what he does.
- 21:06Speaker 3: This is a normal thing that there are hitters around
- 21:09Speaker 3: the league that do, like a great example of a
- 21:12Speaker 3: pitcher who did this stuff was John Lackey. I went
- 21:16Speaker 3: head ahead with him as well. I had to head
- 21:17Speaker 3: against him. He did it to me, so I was like,
- 21:19Speaker 3: this is just something that is part of guy's game.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Wilson Creris is one of those guys. So he gets over,
- 21:25Speaker 3: he leans over the plate. Krats probably can speak to
- 21:27Speaker 3: this as well. You see a guy that leans over
- 21:29Speaker 3: the plate, you know the scouting port on him, you know,
- 21:31Speaker 3: we got to bust him in, Like it's one of
- 21:33Speaker 3: those things like.
- 21:33Speaker 4: We're gonna work him in. We're gonna workhim in, We're
- 21:35Speaker 4: gonna work him in.
- 21:36Speaker 3: He gets hit a few times, he reacts the way
- 21:37Speaker 3: he does. He's a high emotion guy. Those guys hate
- 21:42Speaker 3: to be on there or hate to play against him,
- 21:43Speaker 3: love to be on their team type of guys. This
- 21:45Speaker 3: is not new for him. This has been We've heard
- 21:48Speaker 3: about this his whole career, no matter what team he
- 21:49Speaker 3: was on. And and it's one of those things like
- 21:52Speaker 3: we're not trying to hit you, but if we do,
- 21:54Speaker 3: we don't really feel that bad. And it's like you
- 21:57Speaker 3: get that reputation and then then it becomes your reputation
- 21:59Speaker 3: for a long time time. Carlos Gomez. We all remember
- 22:03Speaker 3: him and his antics and how he excited he was.
- 22:05Speaker 3: He got a reputation. Some guys they throw him in
- 22:07Speaker 3: and if we get you, if you end up getting
- 22:10Speaker 3: in way of the ball, then I'm not gonna feel
- 22:12Speaker 3: a bad as maybe if we hit somebody else. So
- 22:16Speaker 3: I think that's what the situation goes. The Brewers will
- 22:18Speaker 3: go Rodriffs hit him on his own six times, like
- 22:21Speaker 3: they know the situation. He's like, and I'm gonna throw
- 22:23Speaker 3: you in next time and hopefully you swing and I'm
- 22:26Speaker 3: hitting the edge the whole time and you get yourself out,
- 22:28Speaker 3: Like that's that's what we're working with. But that's how
- 22:30Speaker 3: it turns into it. I just think that with the
- 22:33Speaker 3: way that the Red Sox are playing right now, contros
- 22:36Speaker 3: like if they hit me, I'm gonna get mad, but
- 22:38Speaker 3: instead of just trying to calm myself down, I'm just
- 22:40Speaker 3: gonna lean into it.
- 22:41Speaker 4: And that's I think that's what we saw.
- 22:43Speaker 2: I mean, I'm pretty sure the video if you watch it,
- 22:47Speaker 2: he has a handguard, he has a elbow guard, and
- 22:51Speaker 2: if you watch I went back and I watched all
- 22:53Speaker 2: six hip by pitches from Big Wu. I mean it
- 22:56Speaker 2: dates all the way back to I think twenty nineteen.
- 22:59Speaker 2: I didn't see any from when I was catching Big
- 23:01Speaker 2: Wu in eighteen, so I think it was nineteen on.
- 23:04Speaker 2: And a lot of those hit by pitches are really
- 23:08Speaker 2: just really just like inside pitches that he's not getting
- 23:14Speaker 2: out of the way of. Is he sick of getting hit?
- 23:17Speaker 2: For sure, everybody's sick of it. But when you go
- 23:20Speaker 2: into a game, it's my theory of the whole Angel
- 23:23Speaker 2: Hernandez was Angel Hernandez a bad umpire. Yeah, but when
- 23:27Speaker 2: you go into the game, the very first borderline call, oh, Angel,
- 23:31Speaker 2: You're terrible. So now Wilson Contrerez goes into the game
- 23:34Speaker 2: and he's like, they're gonna hit me the very first
- 23:37Speaker 2: pitch that's way inside with runners on second and third,
- 23:42Speaker 2: Like they want to put him on. If they're gonna
- 23:44Speaker 2: put him on, you can just Garrett Cole to Raffie
- 23:48Speaker 2: Divers four put him on, like get a hit is
- 23:52Speaker 2: not new. What's new about this whole situation is the
- 23:56Speaker 2: fact that he went in and he he went in
- 24:00Speaker 2: and did this. He said he went to get one
- 24:04Speaker 2: of them. I'm gonna get one of them, And he
- 24:07Speaker 2: went in and he put a cleat right in Hamilton's calf.
- 24:12Speaker 2: Now you catch somebody, you know, maybe you're sliding in
- 24:15Speaker 2: and as you slide in, your foot comes up. It
- 24:19Speaker 2: could look malicious, but it's not necessarily malicious. If you
- 24:22Speaker 2: go back and watch his replay, he is under complete control.
- 24:27Speaker 2: He went in both hands up and his cleat was
- 24:32Speaker 2: about knee high. He was trying to do damage. And
- 24:35Speaker 2: the only reason I can say that for certain is
- 24:38Speaker 2: because that was his exact quote. And if Major League
- 24:41Speaker 2: Baseball does not come back and have some type of
- 24:43Speaker 2: suspension for this, some type of fine for this, then
- 24:47Speaker 2: they're two faced. Because if a pitcher says, I'm just
- 24:51Speaker 2: trying to I'm just trying to hurt this hitter. I'm
- 24:54Speaker 2: just trying to. I remember when Cole Hamil's hit Bryce
- 24:58Speaker 2: Harper back when Bryce was a rookie. He was like,
- 25:00Speaker 2: I was just trying to welcome him to the league,
- 25:02Speaker 2: like when I first got called up to the league.
- 25:05Speaker 2: He got suspended for an intentional hit by pitch. You
- 25:08Speaker 2: should get suspended for an intentional cleap to the calf
- 25:11Speaker 2: that ripped Hamilton's pants.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Trevor, what if in the next game coming up, Wilson
- 25:21Speaker 1: Contreres goes to Carrot Krishane. He's like, we're hitting first batter,
- 25:26Speaker 1: or we're targeting someone early and we're hitting him and
- 25:30Speaker 1: it was you that he's talking to. What would you say, oof, go.
- 25:36Speaker 3: Drop that question on me. It would take more than
- 25:40Speaker 3: just Wilson, I'll be honest to lock that one in.
- 25:44Speaker 3: It would take more than just Wilson. This would have
- 25:46Speaker 3: to be a collective veteran leadership, like, hey, we're gonna
- 25:52Speaker 3: we're gonna play these guys hard like situation. And that's
- 25:56Speaker 3: you know, that's old school too, but like you know,
- 25:59Speaker 3: you don't go head hunting for one guy who has
- 26:02Speaker 3: a lot.
- 26:03Speaker 4: Of history with it. It's not like it's just random.
- 26:05Speaker 3: Or it was blatantly obvious, right, It's it's still not
- 26:09Speaker 3: blatantly obvious that you're being thrown at.
- 26:11Speaker 4: It's just the way that you're pitched.
- 26:13Speaker 3: And I think we've seen enough of these situations where
- 26:15Speaker 3: we're like, hey, man, like how about I throw everyone in?
- 26:19Speaker 3: How about I just be aggressive in on the plate
- 26:21Speaker 3: and be okay, if one gets away with me or
- 26:23Speaker 3: Go or Gray somebody or whatever the same way they're
- 26:26Speaker 3: approaching you, I gotta I gotta compete, but I gotta
- 26:29Speaker 3: compete in the baseball way, especially when you're Gret Crochet.
- 26:33Speaker 3: You're like, I could strike every single guy out in
- 26:34Speaker 3: the game potentially, Why would I give a free base
- 26:37Speaker 3: if I can avoid it. So it's one of those things.
- 26:40Speaker 3: It's like it's an ongoing conversation. It wouldn't be that simple,
- 26:43Speaker 3: and it shouldn't be that simple, And honestly, you should
- 26:46Speaker 3: probably come out on the on the end of like,
- 26:48Speaker 3: we just got to beat him on the field. I
- 26:50Speaker 3: know that's boring for a lot of people, but it is.
- 26:54Speaker 3: It is the way the game is played now, and
- 26:57Speaker 3: it is the best way to keep everyone on the
- 26:59Speaker 3: field too.
- 27:00Speaker 2: It's kind of an inflection point. I mean, it's not
- 27:03Speaker 2: like Wilson Contreras has been on this team forever. His
- 27:06Speaker 2: teammates are still trying to learn him. They're still trying
- 27:09Speaker 2: to learn who he is. You know, is he the
- 27:11Speaker 2: real who he was in spring training? Is this who
- 27:13Speaker 2: he is? Do we like that fiery personality? If it's
- 27:16Speaker 2: a guy that's been there for like, let's turn the tables.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Christian Yelich has been with the Brewers forever. He's a
- 27:22Speaker 2: respected veteran on this team. People have seen him come
- 27:25Speaker 2: to the ballpark day in and day out a certain
- 27:28Speaker 2: way for years, since twenty eighteen when he came over there.
- 27:32Speaker 2: If he comes to somebody and says what he did
- 27:36Speaker 2: was messed up, I want you to put one in
- 27:38Speaker 2: his ribs. That's way different than Wilson Contreras, who if
- 27:43Speaker 2: you sit back and you watch what happened, it's like, ah,
- 27:47Speaker 2: what I don't understand, Like why you're so mad, Like
- 27:52Speaker 2: he barely ticked you. If they're throwing at you, they're
- 27:55Speaker 2: putting one. They're putting one in your ribs. They're putting
- 27:57Speaker 2: one where you can't get out of the way of it.
- 28:00Speaker 2: I mean, we played the Cardinals forever, and the Cardinals
- 28:04Speaker 2: would routinely hit Yelly, whether they were trying to do
- 28:08Speaker 2: it or not. As a team, you are not allowed
- 28:12Speaker 2: to let your best hitter, who is the MVP that year,
- 28:15Speaker 2: get hit. You can't allow that as a team because
- 28:21Speaker 2: then they're just going to control the inner half of
- 28:23Speaker 2: the zone if they have it. If they have the
- 28:27Speaker 2: inner half of the zone as a hitter, like you
- 28:30Speaker 2: just say, well, they're never going to throw in there
- 28:32Speaker 2: because they're afraid of hitting me. Then you just look
- 28:34Speaker 2: out over and if we have the heat map. I
- 28:37Speaker 2: sent the heat map. I'm not sure if we have
- 28:39Speaker 2: it yet or not, if we can bring it up.
- 28:42Speaker 2: This is fastballs in from right handers. Okay, this is
- 28:46Speaker 2: the red is power zone for Wilson Contreras. The blue
- 28:52Speaker 2: and light green close to the hitter is where he
- 28:56Speaker 2: does not have much slug versus the fastball slash a sinker.
- 29:01Speaker 2: So if you're a hit pitcher, where are you gonna
- 29:03Speaker 2: throw your fastball? Trevor up and in like all day long,
- 29:09Speaker 2: all day long, like this is this is what you're
- 29:11Speaker 2: looking at. If you want success, you don't want him
- 29:14Speaker 2: to do damage against you. This is where you have
- 29:16Speaker 2: to throw your fastball. So I'm sorry, like, I'm not
- 29:19Speaker 2: throwing at somebody. I'm not throwing somebody on the other
- 29:22Speaker 2: team because they're throwing in a location that you can't hit.
- 29:31Speaker 4: That's a good point.
- 29:32Speaker 3: He makes good points, unassailable, I would say a couple
- 29:36Speaker 3: interesting also points to point out here guy getting getting
- 29:40Speaker 3: the cleat fired at him is David Hamilton, who was
- 29:43Speaker 3: these guys teammates last year on Boston, who by all
- 29:47Speaker 3: accounts very well liked and everyone was sad to see
- 29:50Speaker 3: him go. Uh, Caleb Gurban came over in that trade,
- 29:53Speaker 3: So it wasn't just some like you know, it wasn't
- 29:55Speaker 3: like a guy who's been a brewer for a long
- 29:57Speaker 3: time is like he's like, hey man, I was one
- 29:59Speaker 3: of you, Like I know you guys like why me
- 30:02Speaker 3: just because I'm I'm here. So there is a little
- 30:05Speaker 3: bit of that going on where you know you're conflicted
- 30:07Speaker 3: when you know a guy who's on the other side
- 30:09Speaker 3: of the receiving end of something that he doesn't deserve
- 30:11Speaker 3: because he wasn't involved in the thing. And then and
- 30:14Speaker 3: I also want to say this, you make a great
- 30:15Speaker 3: point about Yelly and and like, say what you want
- 30:18Speaker 3: about Wilson Turrets great hit or great player. He has
- 30:20Speaker 3: a history of some highly charged uh like getting angry
- 30:26Speaker 3: about about guys and being hit and not being too
- 30:28Speaker 3: happy about it.
- 30:29Speaker 4: He'll say what he thinks.
- 30:30Speaker 3: Like if I as a younger guy with the twins
- 30:34Speaker 3: and Joe Mauer.
- 30:34Speaker 4: Came up to me and said, hey, we got to
- 30:36Speaker 4: go and get this guy.
- 30:37Speaker 3: Yes, Joe, when it tell me, when tell me exactly
- 30:40Speaker 3: which pitch you got it? Because you're Joe Mauer and
- 30:43Speaker 3: I would never think you would ever have. It must
- 30:45Speaker 3: be really serious if if Papa Joe's asking so like
- 30:48Speaker 3: it's one of those situations. Uh, same with Yelich. Like
- 30:51Speaker 3: some guys that's not their mo or they're not they
- 30:54Speaker 3: don't get upset and they're upset and they need something.
- 30:57Speaker 3: You pay attention. You're much more willing to to to
- 31:00Speaker 3: figure out a solution to that problem quickly. Then maybe
- 31:03Speaker 3: somebody who From time to time it's hard to tell
- 31:07Speaker 3: whether or not it's a then thing or there's really
- 31:10Speaker 3: a big deal going on there.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Yeah, and it was David Hamilton on the Red Sox,
- 31:16Speaker 1: but Wilson Contrera's on the Cardinals, so they weren't teammates.
- 31:20Speaker 1: But I still see what you're saying. And also, wait,
- 31:23Speaker 1: I'll add to that for you. William contraras Wilson's brother
- 31:27Speaker 1: is on the Brewers, So if this does escalate, are
- 31:30Speaker 1: they going to fight to each other? The one thing
- 31:32Speaker 1: that I want to finish my thought with, you know,
- 31:34Speaker 1: I let you guys handle most of like the actual
- 31:37Speaker 1: Hey is this appropriate? Where is he standing on the plate?
- 31:40Speaker 1: How to get him out? The one thing that I like,
- 31:42Speaker 1: Krats is the Red Sox look terrible right now they're
- 31:45Speaker 1: two to eight on the season. They look bad right
- 31:48Speaker 1: on basically all fronts. They are slumping and you can
- 31:51Speaker 1: lose your season really quickly. Ask the Orioles from last year,
- 31:55Speaker 1: especially in the American League East. I'm not saying you
- 31:57Speaker 1: should do this all the time, but this is part
- 32:00Speaker 1: of what you sign up for. Wilson Contreres has done
- 32:03Speaker 1: this for years. He's had the same reputation for years.
- 32:05Speaker 1: He's going to be a top three hitter for the
- 32:07Speaker 1: Red Sox and sometimes they're going to get this and
- 32:10Speaker 1: for me, at least, it's entertaining, and I think from
- 32:13Speaker 1: the fan perspective, sometimes they're like, damn, they need a
- 32:15Speaker 1: freaking shock. They need to get electrocuted right now, because
- 32:19Speaker 1: if they go down a bad hill for the next
- 32:21Speaker 1: few weeks, they might not be able to climb out
- 32:23Speaker 1: of it.
- 32:25Speaker 2: Next few weeks. They're they're putting themselves behind the eight
- 32:29Speaker 2: ball because of the fact that the East is a gauntlet.
- 32:34Speaker 2: We just had the Orioles on. We were talking Orioles
- 32:37Speaker 2: yesterday and what they've gone through. They haven't hit the
- 32:40Speaker 2: East yet. Like, if this team is two to eight
- 32:45Speaker 2: and they're playing the Padres, they're playing the astros. They're
- 32:50Speaker 2: playing the Brewers, they're playing the Reds and they've played
- 32:55Speaker 2: the Twins. Oh I'm sorry, No, yeah, no, the Twins.
- 32:59Speaker 2: That was spring training Red's astros. Like you need to
- 33:03Speaker 2: be if you're going to compete in the East, you
- 33:05Speaker 2: need to win the games outside of the East and
- 33:07Speaker 2: maybe tread water and be five hundred in the East.
- 33:11Speaker 2: So they have an uphill battle already. Sorry, like it's
- 33:13Speaker 2: ten games in. You don't win the season in the
- 33:16Speaker 2: first ten, but you can lose it.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Hey, one more thing from this Red Sox loss yesterday, Trevor.
- 33:21Speaker 1: We brought it up a couple of days ago, Alex
- 33:24Speaker 1: Cork kind of called Roman Anthony out for his defense,
- 33:27Speaker 1: and they've been sitting the more often. Of course, his
- 33:30Speaker 1: arm from left field comes up big in the wrong way,
- 33:34Speaker 1: comes up in a big moment in the wrong way.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Yesterday a couple runs score late in the game that
- 33:38Speaker 1: ends up being the difference. I mean, he's flat footing
- 33:41Speaker 1: throws from left fields. The core called out the footwork
- 33:44Speaker 1: being off. So did you see the throw and what
- 33:48Speaker 1: are your thoughts on Roman Anthony kind of seeing life
- 33:51Speaker 1: coming at him really fast right now. I think he's
- 33:53Speaker 1: about twenty one years old, he got super paid. I
- 33:55Speaker 1: think he's being asked to be the superstar on the team.
- 33:58Speaker 1: And Anthony himself, of course, was very accountable. He said,
- 34:01Speaker 1: terrible throw again, bad baseball. It's on me. Got to
- 34:04Speaker 1: be at least competitive, and it wasn't so terrible. And
- 34:07Speaker 1: he's right, it was like dozens of feet off the mark.
- 34:13Speaker 4: Yeah, when it.
- 34:14Speaker 3: Comes to it always actually has blown me away with
- 34:19Speaker 3: the wide variation between outfield arms and because the outfield
- 34:24Speaker 3: is such a and it has been this way since
- 34:28Speaker 3: we were in Little league. Like, you know, if if
- 34:31Speaker 3: a guy can hit, but maybe it isn't the best defensively,
- 34:33Speaker 3: or I didn't have the strongest arm, we find somewhere
- 34:35Speaker 3: out there to put him and and it remains that way.
- 34:40Speaker 3: So coming up Anthony, it's not like Anthony was a
- 34:42Speaker 3: high he has been a very highly talented prospect. But
- 34:44Speaker 3: the arm wasn't part of it defensively, you know, good
- 34:47Speaker 3: instincts was was the was the name of the game,
- 34:49Speaker 3: but not necessarily the best arm tool. That said, I
- 34:54Speaker 3: think there is another element here with the footwork and
- 34:57Speaker 3: just playing. Basically, it's about playing the balls that you
- 35:01Speaker 3: can get to if you don't have a lot of range.
- 35:02Speaker 3: You can just kind of make sure you're really tight
- 35:04Speaker 3: with the things that are within your ability to do.
- 35:07Speaker 3: Mark Canna, a teammate of mine on with the Mets,
- 35:10Speaker 3: was a guy who kind of preaches.
- 35:12Speaker 4: He's like, dude, I know not the fastest guy.
- 35:14Speaker 3: I know I don't have the best arm, and I
- 35:15Speaker 3: know i'm the most range, but I want to make
- 35:17Speaker 3: sure that I'm playing within whatever my sphere is influences
- 35:20Speaker 3: out here. I need to be as good as I
- 35:23Speaker 3: can be within those parameters. And I don't think we're
- 35:25Speaker 3: seeing that from Roman Anthletic, Like it's okay if you
- 35:29Speaker 3: don't throw the guy out, but we you got to
- 35:31Speaker 3: put yourself in a best position to get them out
- 35:34Speaker 3: if you can, if it's within your ability with your
- 35:37Speaker 3: talent to do so. And it doesn't seem like that
- 35:40Speaker 3: is what's happening. It seems like it's a lack of
- 35:43Speaker 3: care and focus on mechanics with it. Now, I guess
- 35:47Speaker 3: twenty one years old, but he is a superstar. It
- 35:49Speaker 3: is something that we are counting on him.
- 35:51Speaker 1: From him, Yeah, now it's becoming a story early on
- 35:56Speaker 1: here too.
- 35:57Speaker 2: You can go in defensive slumps too, so maybe you
- 36:00Speaker 2: can work himself out.
- 36:00Speaker 7: Of it better than Bass Scoors.
- 36:13Speaker 1: Let's start with Jose Ramirez. He has played many games.
- 36:16Speaker 1: In addition to being one of the most complete players
- 36:19Speaker 1: in the sport, he also plays He's durable, so he
- 36:23Speaker 1: passed the all time games played record for The Guardian's
- 36:29Speaker 1: enfranchise history. So since his debut in twenty thirteen, yesterday
- 36:33Speaker 1: was now his one thy, six hundred and twentieth game
- 36:36Speaker 1: that passes Terry Turner for most enfranchise history. Who is
- 36:41Speaker 1: Terry Turner? I don't know. Ask your friends that we're
- 36:43Speaker 1: following baseball from nineteen oh four to nineteen eighteen. Otherwise
- 36:48Speaker 1: we can just focus on the seven time All Star
- 36:51Speaker 1: now with another accolade, Kratz. I mean, he's just hard
- 36:57Speaker 1: to not love. Of course, he is the guy, the
- 37:00Speaker 1: icon in Cleveland, but there's just like nothing bad to
- 37:04Speaker 1: say about him. And I think this just points out
- 37:06Speaker 1: one more component is the availability that he provides to Cleveland.
- 37:10Speaker 1: Imagine if he was a more injury prone player. I mean,
- 37:14Speaker 1: when he's not in games, which is pretty rare for Cleveland,
- 37:17Speaker 1: they're in trouble.
- 37:19Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely.
- 37:20Speaker 2: I mean you're talking about there's very few players that
- 37:23Speaker 2: are I'm even sure the lynch pin more of a
- 37:26Speaker 2: linchpin of a lineup than Jose Ramirez. What do we
- 37:29Speaker 2: talk about the Cleveland Guardians all the time, terrible lineup, unbelievable,
- 37:34Speaker 2: no power. Then they had a power serge and then
- 37:37Speaker 2: it's like, oh their outfielders can't hit. Oh now they
- 37:40Speaker 2: got it. Like the whole constant, the whole time, it's
- 37:44Speaker 2: Jose Ramirez. Like the fact that this guy has played
- 37:47Speaker 2: this many games. I couldn't believe that sixteen hundred was
- 37:50Speaker 2: the most by a Cleveland baseball player. That was surprising
- 37:55Speaker 2: to me. He just signed an extension. He's going to
- 37:58Speaker 2: be there for a little while. Like I feel like
- 38:00Speaker 2: a guy like Jose Ramirez will age differently. This is
- 38:03Speaker 2: talking about a guy who has been nine nine years.
- 38:07Speaker 2: He has got his seven time All Star nine years
- 38:09Speaker 2: MVP votes six of those nine years top five MVP votes,
- 38:15Speaker 2: Like easily the most underrated player because of the fact
- 38:19Speaker 2: that he doesn't have an MVP and he's close to
- 38:22Speaker 2: he's close to like a sixty war for his career.
- 38:25Speaker 2: So you're talking about a Hall of Fame type of
- 38:27Speaker 2: player that Cleveland has gotten to watch his entire career.
- 38:31Speaker 1: And Trevor, you've faced him probably too many times.
- 38:33Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, he's up there. I think he's top five
- 38:37Speaker 3: and guys have faced not a fun ab came up
- 38:40Speaker 3: against him too. We were same kind of class to
- 38:44Speaker 3: break in. It was, and I'll be honest, there was
- 38:47Speaker 3: a group of prospects over there in Cleveland and he
- 38:49Speaker 3: was probably third behind Francesco Lindor, who is the big
- 38:52Speaker 3: highly touted one, which I mean I think that's also warranted,
- 38:55Speaker 3: very very good player in his own right, and Hazus
- 38:59Speaker 3: Aguilar was the big bopper first base coming up with Cleveland,
- 39:03Speaker 3: so you know, he was always with third base. He's
- 39:06Speaker 3: you know, he's kind of more of a second base type.
- 39:09Speaker 3: Maybe didn't really have much that much power in the
- 39:11Speaker 3: minors and he just found this mode. It feels like
- 39:14Speaker 3: he can operate at ninety percent speed at all times
- 39:18Speaker 3: and still have still stay healthy and still be able
- 39:22Speaker 3: to steal bags. He's like that good of a player,
- 39:24Speaker 3: but he always feels under control, and that is something
- 39:27Speaker 3: I think that is more special than you can really
- 39:31Speaker 3: give credit because it's just not flash. He's hard to
- 39:33Speaker 3: pin down, but there's just like he's just there he's inevitable.
- 39:36Speaker 3: He's just he's just a constant in that lineup, and
- 39:40Speaker 3: that team would be not not close to as good
- 39:45Speaker 3: of a team without him in that lineup. For as
- 39:47Speaker 3: long as he's been there, I think they've been searching
- 39:49Speaker 3: for that new group, those three guys that they're excited
- 39:52Speaker 3: about since he came up, and they're hoping these these
- 39:56Speaker 3: young these young guys and de laughter and sneaming and
- 40:00Speaker 3: and they can start to get some power around him
- 40:01Speaker 3: to keep the core going because he's going to be
- 40:03Speaker 3: there till the day he retires. So it's awesome to see.
- 40:07Speaker 3: But you just don't see this as often that you're
- 40:09Speaker 3: not as touted, and you kind of develop into this
- 40:11Speaker 3: type of guy while you're in the big leagues.
- 40:14Speaker 4: It is. It is impressive, and he is He's always
- 40:16Speaker 4: a guy.
- 40:17Speaker 3: You're circling on every lineup, just automatic when you face
- 40:19Speaker 3: him in and I had to do that quite a bit.
- 40:21Speaker 3: It was always like, okay, you got Lindor and Ramirez
- 40:25Speaker 3: and Santana every single day. So they were in my
- 40:29Speaker 3: top three face for quite a while in my career.
- 40:32Speaker 1: Yeah, Craps looked it up. He said six for eighteen,
- 40:37Speaker 1: So I don't know how mean he played appearances, but yes, I.
- 40:40Speaker 3: Don't think there's a homer in there, so I'll take
- 40:42Speaker 3: a no homer. And this is important.
- 40:46Speaker 4: Dang it.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Well.
- 40:47Speaker 4: The fact that I could remember is a good thing. Uh.
- 40:49Speaker 3: But uh, I will say I only picked guys off
- 40:52Speaker 3: first base twice and I picked him off once, and
- 40:54Speaker 3: no one was more surprised than Jose Ramires because he
- 40:58Speaker 3: was like, I'm going this guy stinks.
- 41:03Speaker 1: I bet he has not been picked off very often.
- 41:07Speaker 1: He is a super high Baseball IQ awareness guy and
- 41:11Speaker 1: one of the best base runners in baseball too, not
- 41:13Speaker 1: just talking about stolen bases. I'm talking about just everything
- 41:16Speaker 1: that he does, taking the extra base, having the awareness
- 41:18Speaker 1: at all times. When you watch him, it's like a clinic.
- 41:21Speaker 1: So the Guardians lost the game. This is better than
- 41:23Speaker 1: box scores four to two. They walked Ramirez twice. By
- 41:26Speaker 1: the way, Guardians are in first place. It's five seconds
- 41:28Speaker 1: into the season. Every Ale Central team basically has the
- 41:31Speaker 1: same record right now, which is interesting. Guardians are six
- 41:34Speaker 1: and five, there's a five and five Royals, and the
- 41:36Speaker 1: rest of the teams in the division are four and six.
- 41:41Speaker 1: We'll swing over to the Nationals game real quick. I mean,
- 41:44Speaker 1: I'm going to talk about the Nats and Cardinals a
- 41:46Speaker 1: little bit more in the beginning of the season, Kratz,
- 41:48Speaker 1: because then we probably aren't going to talk about them
- 41:51Speaker 1: much past the first month or two of the year.
- 41:53Speaker 1: But both bullpens look really bad. I'm going to bet
- 41:57Speaker 1: on that game. Later we'll talk about it. James would
- 41:59Speaker 1: look really good, off to a nice start at the
- 42:02Speaker 1: plate and defensively made a ridiculous catch.
- 42:06Speaker 2: Yeah, the home run home run saving play, I don't
- 42:10Speaker 2: think people are I mean, we just had Joe Adele
- 42:12Speaker 2: on yesterday about his three home runs, like those are
- 42:15Speaker 2: that he that he robbed against the Mariners, Like it's
- 42:19Speaker 2: not easy to rob home runs. The issue with James
- 42:21Speaker 2: Wood when he robbed the home run that he robbed
- 42:24Speaker 2: last night, like it didn't even look like he had
- 42:28Speaker 2: a jump. He is such a large human. He hits
- 42:30Speaker 2: the ball so hard, and the fact that he hit
- 42:33Speaker 2: a line drive to the center fielder in the eighth
- 42:36Speaker 2: inning that ended up going out of the ballpark really
- 42:40Speaker 2: showed like kind of a glimpse. Unfortunately, not many people
- 42:44Speaker 2: watched the Cardinals NAT's game last night of what this
- 42:47Speaker 2: guy can do. It was a two iron. It was
- 42:49Speaker 2: a stinger off the deck that went out and almost
- 42:54Speaker 2: broke the bullpen cart in Washington.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Yeah, he's got a few homers to start the year. Really,
- 43:01Speaker 1: the last couple of games is when he's been picking
- 43:03Speaker 1: up the pace seven twenty two ohps and I think
- 43:07Speaker 1: things can change. But you're going to get a high
- 43:09Speaker 1: swing and miss guy and probably thirty forty homers per
- 43:12Speaker 1: year in athletic outfielder out there for the Nationals who
- 43:15Speaker 1: are just in like total rebuild, let's have fun mode.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Same with the Cardinals this year. So just like play loose,
- 43:22Speaker 1: have a good time, put up numbers, do your thing
- 43:25Speaker 1: in James Wood.
- 43:28Speaker 8: So coming from the Miami Marlins. When I walk around Miami,
- 43:30Speaker 8: I never saw a Miami Marlins jersey. I never saw
- 43:33Speaker 8: in Miami Marlins hat. I saw nothing at the sort
- 43:35Speaker 8: of pope. When I'm walking around downtown Denver, they are
- 43:38Speaker 8: really excited about the Rockies. They want the Rockies to
- 43:41Speaker 8: be good. This is a sports town. We are trying
- 43:43Speaker 8: to put a good product on the field. I think
- 43:45Speaker 8: Paul's done a great job of that. I've never seen
- 43:49Speaker 8: so many supporters of one team that I've actually been
- 43:51Speaker 8: a part of and that I've been on. So this
- 43:54Speaker 8: city and this team wants to win, and we're going
- 43:56Speaker 8: to try to put the best product every night and
- 43:58Speaker 8: do our best to win.
- 44:00Speaker 1: It's Rockies outfielder Troy Johnston talking about how he likes
- 44:04Speaker 1: Stenver a little bit better now he's Patrick Saunders, who's
- 44:06Speaker 1: covered the team for years, saying that the announced crowd
- 44:09Speaker 1: on Monday Night was sixteen thousand and three oh one,
- 44:11Speaker 1: lowest in franchise history, including the COVID seasons. That would
- 44:17Speaker 1: be a huge win almost any night in Miami. I
- 44:20Speaker 1: know we've been picking on their attendance lately, but the
- 44:23Speaker 1: guy does have a point, Trevor. I've been to Colorado
- 44:25Speaker 1: a number of times, Denver specifically, I lived in Miami.
- 44:29Speaker 1: You do see Rockies jerseys everywhere, and this is actually
- 44:32Speaker 1: part of a dynamic with two teams that have been
- 44:34Speaker 1: towards the bottom for a while. The Marlins struggle even
- 44:38Speaker 1: when they're good. The Rockies do well attendance wise, even
- 44:42Speaker 1: when they're bad.
- 44:45Speaker 3: Yeah, it's an interesting adamic also very well, said Troy.
- 44:49Speaker 3: I couldn't tell if you were the new GM of
- 44:52Speaker 3: the team or just a player on it, so that
- 44:54Speaker 3: was well done. I think that that'll be in the
- 44:57Speaker 3: archives for when you do want to become a GM someday.
- 45:00Speaker 3: He makes a great point, do you know what, do
- 45:01Speaker 3: you know what jerseys and hats? You do see a
- 45:03Speaker 3: lot in Miami Yankees. So, uh, they do like baseball.
- 45:08Speaker 3: They just happen to like the Yankees more. It's it's
- 45:13Speaker 3: you know, it's a different situation than the weather is different.
- 45:16Speaker 4: I understand there is an element.
- 45:18Speaker 3: Of that, right, It's you get the beaches and it's Miami,
- 45:20Speaker 3: and it's it's a different type of town that is
- 45:23Speaker 3: built around other entertainment.
- 45:25Speaker 7: Uh.
- 45:26Speaker 3: And Denver no offense to Denver. That's not the case
- 45:28Speaker 3: to Denver. Denver is a different style. But that said,
- 45:33Speaker 3: the discrepancy in terms of attendance should not be what
- 45:37Speaker 3: it is. And if you're gonna be on a team
- 45:39Speaker 3: that isn't really that competitive usually year on year out,
- 45:43Speaker 3: and you you want to at least feel like the
- 45:45Speaker 3: fans are behind you. I mean, well, unless you're a pitcher,
- 45:49Speaker 3: Denver is not a great place or Denver's a great
- 45:51Speaker 3: place to choose, right, So, and guys have made that
- 45:54Speaker 3: calculus before.
- 45:55Speaker 4: I've I've heard that directly like that. I would make that.
- 45:58Speaker 3: Decision because it's just seems like a more fun place
- 46:02Speaker 3: to play that doesn't feel so it's not fun to
- 46:05Speaker 3: play where it feels like it's empty or in an
- 46:07Speaker 3: empty warehouse all the time, and it's super hot outside
- 46:10Speaker 3: all the time.
- 46:11Speaker 4: So I mean, he said what he thought. I love it.
- 46:13Speaker 4: You candid, say what you're thinking.
- 46:16Speaker 2: Say it with the jest.
- 46:31Speaker 1: A few minutes to go here slappands a great day
- 46:33Speaker 1: with Trevor May. Trevor, I wanted to ask you about
- 46:36Speaker 1: the Mariners since you're in the Seattle area. What is
- 46:39Speaker 1: the buzz on the team so far in the first
- 46:41Speaker 1: week and a half of the season. Cal Roley at
- 46:43Speaker 1: its first home run in a great a b against
- 46:45Speaker 1: Jacob de gram although in a losing effort to unlass
- 46:48Speaker 1: for them, but thoughts on the Mariners as a whole
- 46:51Speaker 1: in the first week and a half and also just
- 46:53Speaker 1: the vibes I think, who is it? Ryan Divish said
- 46:57Speaker 1: that the excitement level and anticipation up in Seattle for
- 47:00Speaker 1: the Mariners for this season is the highest since he
- 47:03Speaker 1: can remember it since he's been covering the team, so
- 47:06Speaker 1: probably fifteen years or so, since early two thousands.
- 47:11Speaker 9: Yeah, well classic a little bit of excitement out of
- 47:15Speaker 9: the gate and then a little bit of the tempered
- 47:18Speaker 9: excitement out of the gate with the slow start to
- 47:21Speaker 9: the middle of the lineup.
- 47:22Speaker 3: You know, a lot of there was a lot of
- 47:24Speaker 3: like this stat thrown out that they had the third
- 47:26Speaker 3: most homers in the league last year, and half their
- 47:31Speaker 3: runs were scored were off homers. And this is, you know,
- 47:34Speaker 3: a notoriously fairly finicky middle of the offense, even with
- 47:37Speaker 3: the talent that's there. The two guys that are anchoring
- 47:40Speaker 3: in and cal Ralely and Julio Rodriguez are two of
- 47:42Speaker 3: the most streaky hitters on the planet and both notorious
- 47:47Speaker 3: slow starters as well.
- 47:47Speaker 4: They've come out of the gate slow. Cal also has
- 47:50Speaker 4: run into bad luck with being.
- 47:51Speaker 3: One of the robbed homers by Joe Odell, so he
- 47:54Speaker 3: would have to and he probably could feel little bit
- 47:56Speaker 3: better about it. But yeah, I think that people are like, oh,
- 47:59Speaker 3: are we actually as good as we thought? I've heard
- 48:01Speaker 3: of had a couple of times like yes, just the
- 48:03Speaker 3: pitching is exactly as advertised, that it's going to be
- 48:06Speaker 3: a lot of close games. It was always going to
- 48:08Speaker 3: be this way. I think that when they get into
- 48:10Speaker 3: groove though. Having got Josh Naylor and Brendan Donovan flanking
- 48:15Speaker 3: those two guys in the middle is going to make
- 48:17Speaker 3: all of the difference in the world. Putting together really
- 48:18Speaker 3: good abs. Even when they're not hitting, they're going to
- 48:20Speaker 3: put together good at bats. They're still going to walk.
- 48:22Speaker 3: So this is what I testipate. But yes, I think
- 48:25Speaker 3: it's tempered more than it's ever been here, and there's
- 48:27Speaker 3: an expectation. There's an expectation to win the division and
- 48:30Speaker 3: go back to the playoffs and make a run again,
