- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, a couple of golf notes I wanted to get to.
- 0:02Speaker 1: First of all, it came down yesterday Scotti Scheffler winning
- 0:07Speaker 1: the Jack Nicholas Award as the PGA Tour Player of
- 0:10Speaker 1: the Year. No grand surprise there. After all, he won
- 0:15Speaker 1: a second green jacket at the Masters. He had seven
- 0:18Speaker 1: victories on tour. He also won a gold medal at
- 0:23Speaker 1: the Olympics. He won the fed x Cup title, won
- 0:25Speaker 1: the Players Championship, first golfer since Tiger Woods from five
- 0:29Speaker 1: to oh seven to win the honor in three straight seasons.
- 0:33Speaker 1: So obviously there was no surprise there. I think everybody
- 0:39Speaker 1: would have expected that. Him winning the Jack Nicholas Awards,
- 0:43Speaker 1: a couple of other things that I wanted to get to.
- 0:46Speaker 1: I guess you saw the Tiger Woods announcement about when
- 0:48Speaker 1: he's planning to return. He's along with his fifteen year
- 0:54Speaker 1: old son, Charlie. They can play in the PNC Championship,
- 1:00Speaker 1: and he played. He's played the thirty six whole PNC
- 1:04Speaker 1: Championship with Charlie every year since twenty twenty. And the
- 1:08Speaker 1: tournament invites players who have won majors or the Players
- 1:12Speaker 1: Championship with family members, typically their children, that is coming
- 1:18Speaker 1: up next weekend in Orlando, so it's kind of local
- 1:21Speaker 1: for him too. What do you think about that tournament? Formatt,
- 1:25Speaker 1: it's a good tournament for December golf. Here you go.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Okay, that's all it is. All right, It's all it is.
- 1:31Speaker 2: It's golf in December. Nobody cares about it. Nobody really
- 1:33Speaker 2: wants to watch it.
- 1:34Speaker 1: So the only way to get people involved is if
- 1:36Speaker 1: you get guys like Tiger Woods and his son out there.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Yep, yep.
- 1:39Speaker 1: All right, so there you go in Orlando.
- 1:41Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Let's hear some more from Long Worn's head coach Vick Shaffer,
- 1:43Speaker 1: Texas women's basketball coach. We heard some last hour. Here
- 1:46Speaker 1: is part two of his conversation with the media leading
- 1:49Speaker 1: into the night's game against Southern.
- 1:52Speaker 3: You mentioned Jordan's academic goals about that toach a moment ago,
- 1:56Speaker 3: you mentioned Jordan's academic goals, wants to be a doctor.
- 2:00Speaker 3: When you're recruiting an athlete and she mentioned academic goals
- 2:04Speaker 3: like that, what goes through your mind? Do you hear
- 2:07Speaker 3: that as as a big advantage to having an athlete
- 2:10Speaker 3: like that on your team?
- 2:11Speaker 2: No question? You know? Uh? Heck?
- 2:17Speaker 4: Coach Shaffer junior was in biological science, made a three
- 2:21Speaker 4: six seven. I thought I had a doctor or a
- 2:24Speaker 4: veterinarian on my hands, and she was going through that,
- 2:26Speaker 4: and then all of a sudden at the last she
- 2:28Speaker 4: decided to change her mind or to communication and went
- 2:32Speaker 4: into work for SEC Network and then ends up being
- 2:36Speaker 4: a coach. But you know, I love the fact that
- 2:40Speaker 4: Jordan wants to be a doctor. She's gonna be a doctor,
- 2:46Speaker 4: She's going to be a great doctor. And obviously, our
- 2:50Speaker 4: our UT Medical brand, you know, it's not only part
- 2:53Speaker 4: of the Longhorn brand, but it has its brand of
- 2:55Speaker 4: its own. And knowing what they're fixing to build right
- 3:00Speaker 4: yar behind me where the drum used to be in
- 3:03Speaker 4: in uh you know uh uh a cancer research hospital
- 3:10Speaker 4: that's you know, part of the big system in Houston
- 3:13Speaker 4: and now is going to be part of our our
- 3:15Speaker 4: UT system here.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Man.
- 3:19Speaker 4: It's that's really cool. You know that our students are
- 3:22Speaker 4: going to benefit from M. D Anderson and and everything
- 3:26Speaker 4: that that brand stands for.
- 3:28Speaker 2: And so I think that's something that's you know.
- 3:32Speaker 4: Our administration, uh President Hartzell's to be commended for to
- 3:36Speaker 4: get that here. And then our students, you know, our
- 3:40Speaker 4: our our doctoral students are going to be the benefactor
- 3:42Speaker 4: of that. And if I've got a player that's capable
- 3:45Speaker 4: of that, heck yeah, man. Uh, I'll practice at midnight
- 3:49Speaker 4: if I have to to work around her schedule.
- 3:52Speaker 2: But I would do that for anyone because that's.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Just really special. And she's a special kid. I mean,
- 4:00Speaker 4: she's she's just really really special. She's unique, and uh,
- 4:05Speaker 4: you know, we're lucky to have her.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Thanks Jeff. Let's go to Zach.
- 4:12Speaker 4: Hey, coach, would you consider West Virginia and Notre Dame
- 4:15Speaker 4: crucial games for preparing for SEC play? Where you're playing
- 4:18Speaker 4: competitive games two to three times a week, games like
- 4:21Speaker 4: South Carolina LSU.
- 4:22Speaker 1: How do these non con games get you ready for
- 4:25Speaker 1: the SEC?
- 4:26Speaker 4: Well, certainly some non conference teams are better than others.
- 4:30Speaker 4: And you know, uh, I think the thing that bothered
- 4:36Speaker 4: me last week was we played three in a row Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
- 4:40Speaker 4: We got in Sunday night at three am. Kids had
- 4:43Speaker 4: to go to class Monday. You know, we took Monday off,
- 4:49Speaker 4: but kids were it's not a day off when you've
- 4:52Speaker 4: got to go to class, You've got tests. We practiced Tuesday, Wendy,
- 4:59Speaker 4: We're back on the road. You played Thursday on the
- 5:02Speaker 4: road once again. We got in at three, you know,
- 5:06Speaker 4: two in the morning. Kids aren't going to bed till
- 5:08Speaker 4: three in the morning. And and uh, you know that's
- 5:12Speaker 4: travel issues, that's playing problems, it's playing company, it's whatever
- 5:16Speaker 4: it is. But my kids are suffering. Like I've done
- 5:20Speaker 4: this forty years. I've never had kids getting home from
- 5:22Speaker 4: any road trip where they're going to bed at three
- 5:24Speaker 4: in the morning.
- 5:25Speaker 2: I've had it back to back.
- 5:27Speaker 4: Road trips and and so our kids didn't go to
- 5:31Speaker 4: bed till late, had to go to class on Friday.
- 5:33Speaker 4: I mean, I've got kids in eight o'clock classes. I've
- 5:36Speaker 4: got kids with eight o'clock study hall. It's a challenge,
- 5:40Speaker 4: but I knew that. James Madison warned our attention. So
- 5:44Speaker 4: we had to try to practice Friday afternoon. And I'm
- 5:48Speaker 4: telling you, they're they're They're not bad, they're pretty good.
- 5:50Speaker 4: They're going to win their league, and they've got really
- 5:54Speaker 4: good players. They've got preseason Player of the Year on
- 5:56Speaker 4: their team. So it warranted our tension. And so to
- 6:02Speaker 4: go in there and play that well in the first
- 6:04Speaker 4: half was so encouraging for me. And again wasn't everybody.
- 6:11Speaker 4: I wish I could say it was, but it wasn't.
- 6:14Speaker 4: But those four kids in particular really stood out to me.
- 6:18Speaker 4: And it's all in their approach, y'all. Those kids are
- 6:21Speaker 4: pros and how they approach the game and how they
- 6:25Speaker 4: approach life and how they approach their academics.
- 6:28Speaker 2: I mean.
- 6:29Speaker 4: And so you know, again, games like that, playing those
- 6:34Speaker 4: five games in what eight nine days, that's the toughest
- 6:39Speaker 4: piece that gets you ready for a rugged SEC game
- 6:43Speaker 4: SEC schedule. Certainly West Virginia being in the top ten,
- 6:47Speaker 4: Notre Dame being in the top ten, on's on our
- 6:49Speaker 4: neutral floor, ones on the road, you know, weren't even
- 6:53Speaker 4: getting to play those teams at home, and to do
- 6:57Speaker 4: what we did. Now we've got another one coming up
- 6:59Speaker 4: in Richmond, and we've got a top twenty five South
- 7:02Speaker 4: Dakota State who's so well coached and always in the
- 7:05Speaker 4: NCAA tournament right before Christmas.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Then we're going to.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Play another one in Maryland in non conference, right in
- 7:11Speaker 4: the middle of conference. So all these you know, all
- 7:16Speaker 4: this scheduling obviously hopefully sets you up to be successful
- 7:19Speaker 4: in the SEC, but.
- 7:22Speaker 2: The SEC is a.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Nightmare in and of itself and the Thursday Sunday part
- 7:29Speaker 4: y'all is what's really I've been fighting it ever since
- 7:32Speaker 4: I've been in the league.
- 7:34Speaker 2: It's really hard on your kids.
- 7:37Speaker 4: And when you don't have a true day off in
- 7:39Speaker 4: January and February, if you don't know how to navigate that,
- 7:44Speaker 4: it can really wear on your team because getting up
- 7:47Speaker 4: and going to class on Monday and having an exam,
- 7:50Speaker 4: a physics exam or a chemistry test, that is not
- 7:54Speaker 4: a day off. You know, when we were in the
- 7:57Speaker 4: Big Twelve, we had Sundays off, and that's a true
- 8:01Speaker 4: day off, and it allows your kids to just kind
- 8:04Speaker 4: of vedge out, relax, get their feet under them, get treatment.
- 8:10Speaker 4: We won't have that, And it's been a concern of
- 8:13Speaker 4: mine for a while now, and you know, I've sat
- 8:17Speaker 4: in that room. I've seen it evolve from the old
- 8:20Speaker 4: days with you know, the old coaches, the Andy Landers,
- 8:24Speaker 4: the Coach Summit, you know, several others that had been
- 8:31Speaker 4: in the legue a while advocating and it all stemmed
- 8:35Speaker 4: from TV. That's how we ended up starting to play
- 8:38Speaker 4: on Sunday back in the day. But now with our game,
- 8:41Speaker 4: it's not just Sunday availability we're available all the time,
- 8:45Speaker 4: and so I really, you know, I'm always going to
- 8:47Speaker 4: advocate and push to try to get that changed a
- 8:50Speaker 4: little bit. But I'm beating my head in the wall
- 8:52Speaker 4: right now. I'm kind of the lone ranger. Although I
- 8:55Speaker 4: will say the room has changed some and I do
- 8:58Speaker 4: think there's there's more in the room that understand the
- 9:01Speaker 4: importance not only of.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Your players but your staff.
- 9:06Speaker 4: You know, there's just it can really wear on you.
- 9:11Speaker 4: So in any case, that's for another day. But the
- 9:15Speaker 4: non conference schedule is certainly important in getting you ready.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Mark, you got another one?
- 9:21Speaker 3: Yeah, quick?
- 9:23Speaker 5: The couple. Is there somebody in your athletic department who
- 9:28Speaker 5: needs to be in touch with the SEC, you know,
- 9:32Speaker 5: to make sure you get a fast shake on the
- 9:34Speaker 5: return scheduling. And is there somebody on your team like Rory,
- 9:38Speaker 5: I'm sorry that who needs to make sure that more
- 9:41Speaker 5: than four players show up, you know, for unscheduled work.
- 9:49Speaker 4: Well again, I'm not saying only four show up for
- 9:52Speaker 4: unscheduled work, but consistently, you know, those kids are out
- 9:57Speaker 4: here day in and day out, and there may you
- 9:59Speaker 4: know here a lot, you know, she's.
- 10:02Speaker 2: In here a lot.
- 10:05Speaker 4: We we all I'm gonna say is those four are
- 10:09Speaker 4: in the What I'm saying is on game day, two
- 10:12Speaker 4: hours prior to tip, those are our first four that
- 10:16Speaker 4: are activated to get on the floor. Not those aren't
- 10:19Speaker 4: the only ones that come out early. We have other
- 10:21Speaker 4: people that come out after them, but that's our first
- 10:23Speaker 4: activation group because they want to be out there and
- 10:27Speaker 4: have their own time where they can really get up
- 10:29Speaker 4: a bunch of shots.
- 10:31Speaker 2: I have a gym full of kids that come in early.
- 10:34Speaker 4: They're going to be out here early today before practice
- 10:37Speaker 4: and they'll get up shots.
- 10:39Speaker 2: But I would say.
- 10:40Speaker 4: Those other four because of you know, getting out early
- 10:44Speaker 4: on game day, that separates them a lot. And then
- 10:48Speaker 4: Rory Rory's in here, Jordan Lee's in here every day
- 10:52Speaker 4: getting shots up. Shay's in here pretty consistently getting shots up.
- 10:58Speaker 2: And so do we need more that'll that will take
- 11:02Speaker 2: that time.
- 11:03Speaker 4: Absolutely, But it's I don't want to say it's just
- 11:06Speaker 4: those four, but it is what it is, and we've
- 11:11Speaker 4: got to try to get more, to do more and
- 11:14Speaker 4: spend more time in here. To answer the other part
- 11:19Speaker 4: of your question, I mean, I've talked to the league
- 11:22Speaker 4: office and certainly know those people and voiced my you
- 11:26Speaker 4: know what I believe would be right and fair, and
- 11:30Speaker 4: you know, we'll see how it all shakes out. It's
- 11:33Speaker 4: it's something that's obviously a collaboration between two leagues, So
- 11:36Speaker 4: two people, two conference not commissioners, but the women's basketball administrator,
- 11:45Speaker 4: Tiffany Daniels for us, and then that person in the
- 11:48Speaker 4: a CEC office. They have to sit down and hammer
- 11:51Speaker 4: out who exactly is going to play who in that deal.
- 11:56Speaker 4: I've expressed my my interest in Notre Dame returning us
- 12:00Speaker 4: through Tiffany, and she'll do what she can. I'm known
- 12:04Speaker 4: her a long time, like her a lot, and she
- 12:06Speaker 4: does a great job for us.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Thank you, yep, Thanks Mark Deaf Do you have one one?
- 12:13Speaker 3: I do?
- 12:13Speaker 2: Yes.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Shay is going to be recognized as the program's career
- 12:18Speaker 3: games played leader. What does that record say about her?
- 12:24Speaker 4: Kid's a winner, Kid's tough, She's a competitor. She does
- 12:32Speaker 4: what I you know, I tell kids all the time.
- 12:34Speaker 4: She just stays in a picture, you know, but you
- 12:41Speaker 4: know she's the the ultimate competitor and the ultimate teammate.
- 12:45Speaker 4: She cares nothing about the glory. She cares all about team.
- 12:51Speaker 4: She cares about the program. Who she is and what
- 12:57Speaker 4: she represents as a young lady and a student athlete.
- 13:02Speaker 4: So much of that credit goes to her mother and father.
- 13:06Speaker 4: And she's just a classy kid, but tough, competitive. I'm
- 13:15Speaker 4: telling y'all, if she hadn't been a basketball player, she'd
- 13:19Speaker 4: be a world class decathlete.
- 13:21Speaker 2: I mean, the kid is just.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Really really a special, special athlete.
- 13:28Speaker 2: In so many ways.
- 13:29Speaker 4: But I just think the you know, nobody deserves it
- 13:34Speaker 4: more than her.
- 13:35Speaker 2: She's earned it.
- 13:38Speaker 4: And again, she's the classic example much like Blair was
- 13:43Speaker 4: during her career, just staying in the picture, just staying
- 13:46Speaker 4: in the gym, working at it wasn't easy early, but
- 13:52Speaker 4: just didn't give in in an excuse maker. She's not
- 13:57Speaker 4: a butt but but but persons. She's all about accountability
- 14:04Speaker 4: and what it takes to be great. And again, she
- 14:08Speaker 4: is who she is as a basketball player because she's
- 14:11Speaker 4: invested in her craft, and she is who she is
- 14:15Speaker 4: as a young lady because I believe her parents there
- 14:18Speaker 4: just they have done such an incredible job with her.
- 14:21Speaker 4: And you know, again we've just been really really lucky
- 14:24Speaker 4: here at Texas to have had had her for five years.
- 14:29Speaker 4: You know, I'm a much better coach. I'm a I'm
- 14:32Speaker 4: a better person having Shay Holly on my team over
- 14:35Speaker 4: the last you know, four plus years, and I just
- 14:40Speaker 4: have a real appreciation for her.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Thanks, coach, I appreciate your time. Well.
- 14:47Speaker 4: Just to close it out, so we're also going to
- 14:50Speaker 4: honor Taylor Jones for her not only her fifteen hundredth point,
- 14:54Speaker 4: but obviously we screwed up here and didn't even acknowledge
- 14:58Speaker 4: her for her thousand career points and so, and that
- 15:01Speaker 4: happened over a year ago in the NCAA Tournament against
- 15:04Speaker 4: East Carolina. So we're gonna honor her as well in
- 15:10Speaker 4: the future with her thousandth and fifteen hundredth basketball and again,
- 15:17Speaker 4: she's she's had a great career. I'm just excited to
- 15:21Speaker 4: see her continue to get better. We I've always said,
- 15:25Speaker 4: if I can keep her healthy, she's got a chance
- 15:28Speaker 4: to really help us and and and even play after this.
- 15:33Speaker 4: So showed a lot of toughness over the weekend, y'all,
- 15:37Speaker 4: after that pretty tough fall against Notre Dame, pretty much
- 15:41Speaker 4: flat on her back, to come back and play on
- 15:45Speaker 4: Sunday and play as well as she did really said
- 15:48Speaker 4: a lot about her to me. And I'm glad to
- 15:50Speaker 4: see that part of her growth happen, because you know,
- 15:54Speaker 4: we're never one hundred percent.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Nobody is.
- 15:57Speaker 4: But that was a pretty tough fall and I'm really
- 16:00Speaker 4: proud of her coming back.
- 16:01Speaker 2: She had an impact on the game.
- 16:03Speaker 1: So there it is, Texas against Southern University. I hope
- 16:07Speaker 1: to see out at Moody Center time. It's a seven
- 16:09Speaker 1: o'clock tip. We'll obviously have the broadcast for you. Aaron McMahon,
- 16:14Speaker 1: the former long Holm, will join me for the call
- 16:16Speaker 1: of that with a six forty five airtime seven o'clock
- 16:19Speaker 1: tip off for Moody Center on one oh three point
- 16:22Speaker 1: one FM, Austin's eighty station. Texas against Southern More coming
- 16:27Speaker 1: up here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
