0:43
Speaker 1: on the stage ought to be marked by gaiety of dialog,
0:47
Speaker 1: diversity of character, seriousness, tenderness, hope, fear, suspicion, desire, pity,
0:54
Speaker 1: variety of events, changes of fortune, unexpected disaster, sudden joy,
1:00
Speaker 1: and a happy ending and a footnote. The Conscious Lovers,
1:07
Speaker 1: a comedy which had been long in preparation, was acted
1:12
Speaker 1: at Drury Lane Theater on November seventh, seventeen twenty two,
1:17
Speaker 1: with new scenes and all the character's new dressed, and
1:22
Speaker 1: with Booth, who had acted the part of Pamphylus the
1:26
Speaker 1: prototype of Young Bevill at Westminster with great success. Wilkes,
1:32
Speaker 1: Myrtle Sibber, Tom Mills, Sir John Bevell, Missus Oldfield Indiana,
1:40
Speaker 1: and Missus Younger Phyllis in the principal parts. The play
1:46
Speaker 1: ran for eighteen nights and was a great success. It
1:50
Speaker 1: was often revived between seventeen twenty two and seventeen sixty,
1:56
Speaker 1: and was acted at Covent Garden in eighteen ten and
2:00
Speaker 1: at Bath in eighteen eighteen. Phyllis was Peg Woffington's second
2:06
Speaker 1: speaking character in Dublin, and she took that part on
2:11
Speaker 1: March ninth, seventeen forty one, during her first season in London.
2:17
Speaker 1: The play was published by Thomson on December one, seventeen
2:22
Speaker 1: twenty two, with the date seventeen twenty three on the
2:26
Speaker 1: title page. The general idea of the piece is taken
2:31
Speaker 1: from Terence's Andrea, but the original is widely departed from
2:36
Speaker 1: After the opening scenes, Collie Sibber lent material aid in
2:42
Speaker 1: preparing the play for representation. It was attacked by John
2:47
Speaker 1: Dennis in two pamphlets and defended by Benjamin Victor and
2:52
Speaker 1: others to the King, May it please your Majesty after
2:59
Speaker 1: having a spy to the highest and most laudable ambition
3:04
Speaker 1: that of following the cause of liberty. I should not
3:07
Speaker 1: have humbly petitioned your Majesty for a direction of the theater,
3:12
Speaker 1: had I not believed success in that province and happiness
3:16
Speaker 1: much to be wished by an honest man, and highly
3:20
Speaker 1: conducing to the prosperity of the commonwealth. It is in
3:25
Speaker 1: this view I lay before your Majesty a comedy which
3:29
Speaker 1: the audience, in justice to themselves, has supported and encouraged,
3:36
Speaker 1: and is the prelude of what, by your Majesty's influence
3:40
Speaker 1: and favor, may be attempted in future representations. The imperial mantle,
3:48
Speaker 1: the royal vestment, and the shining diadem are what strike
3:53
Speaker 1: ordinary minds. But your Majesty's native goodness, your passion for justice,
3:59
Speaker 1: and her common constant assessor mercy, is what continually surrounds
4:04
Speaker 1: you in the view of intelligent spirits, and gives hope
4:08
Speaker 1: to the supplicant who sees he has more than succeeded
4:13
Speaker 1: in giving your Majesty an opportunity of doing good. Our
4:18
Speaker 1: King is above the greatness of royalty, and every act
4:22
Speaker 1: of his will which makes another man happy has ten
4:26
Speaker 1: times more charms in it than one that makes himself
4:30
Speaker 1: appear raised above the condition of others. But even this
4:35
Speaker 1: carries unhappiness with it. For calm, dominion, equal grandeur, and
4:41
Speaker 1: familiar greatness do not easily affect the imagination of the vulgar,
4:46
Speaker 1: who cannot see power. But in terror, and as fear
4:50
Speaker 1: moves mean spirits, and love prompts great ones to obey,
4:57
Speaker 1: the insinuations of malcontents are direc accordingly, and the unhappy
5:02
Speaker 1: people are ensnared from want of reflection into disrespectful ideas
5:08
Speaker 1: of their gracious and amiable sovereign, and then only begin
5:13
Speaker 1: to apprehend the greatness of their master when they have
5:17
Speaker 1: incurred his displeasure. As your Majesty was invited to the
5:23
Speaker 1: throne of a willing people for their own sakes, and
5:27
Speaker 1: has ever enjoyed it with contempt of the ostentation of it,
5:32
Speaker 1: we beseech you to protect us, who revere your title
5:36
Speaker 1: as we love your person. Tis to be a savage,
5:40
Speaker 1: to be a rebel, and they who have fallen from
5:44
Speaker 1: you have not so much forfeited their allegiance as lost
5:49
Speaker 1: their humanity. And therefore, if it were only to preserve
5:53
Speaker 1: myself from the imputation of being amongst the insensible and abandoned.
5:59
Speaker 1: I will beg permission, in the most public manner possible,
6:03
Speaker 1: to profess myself with the utmost sincerity and zeal, Sire,
6:10
Speaker 1: Your Majesty's most devoted subject and servant, Richard Steele. The
6:16
Speaker 1: preface this comedy has been received with universal acceptance, for
6:23
Speaker 1: it was in every part excellently performed, And there needs
6:27
Speaker 1: no other applause of the actors but that they excelled
6:30
Speaker 1: according to the dignity and difficulty of the character they represented.
6:37
Speaker 1: But this great favor done to the work in acting
6:40
Speaker 1: renders the expectations still the greater from the author to
6:45
Speaker 1: keep up the spirit in the representation of the closet
6:50
Speaker 1: or any other circumstance of the reader, whether alone or
6:54
Speaker 1: in company, to which I can only say that it
6:58
Speaker 1: must be remembered. A play is to be seen, and
7:02
Speaker 1: is made to be represented with the advantage of action,
7:07
Speaker 1: nor can appear but with half the spirit without it.
7:12
Speaker 1: For the greatest effect of a play in reading is
7:15
Speaker 1: to excite the reader to go and see it, And
7:19
Speaker 1: when he does so, it is then a play has
7:22
Speaker 1: the effect of example and precept. The chief design of
7:27
Speaker 1: this was to be an innocent performance and the audience
7:32
Speaker 1: have abundantly shown how ready they are to support what
7:35
Speaker 1: is visibly intended that way. Nor do I make any
7:40
Speaker 1: difficulty to acknowledge that the whole was writ for the
7:44
Speaker 1: sake of the scene of the fourth act, wherein mister
7:48
Speaker 1: Bevil evades the quarrel with his friend, and hope it
7:53
Speaker 1: may have some effect on the goths and vandals that
7:57
Speaker 1: frequent the theaters, or a more polite audience may supply
8:02
Speaker 1: their absence. But this incident and the case of the
8:07
Speaker 1: father and daughter are esteemed by some people as no
8:11
Speaker 1: subjects of comedy. But I cannot be of their mind,
8:16
Speaker 1: for anything that has its foundation in happiness and success
8:21
Speaker 1: must be allowed to be the subject of comedy, and
8:24
Speaker 1: sure it must be an improvement of it to introduce
8:29
Speaker 1: a joy too exquisite for laughter that can have no
8:33
Speaker 1: spring but in delight, which is the case of this
8:37
Speaker 1: young lady. I must therefore contend that the tears which
8:43
Speaker 1: were shed on that occasion flowed from reason and good sense,
8:48
Speaker 1: and that men ought not to be laughed at for weeping.
8:52
Speaker 1: Till we are come to a more clear notion of
8:56
Speaker 1: what is to be imputed to the hardness of the
8:58
Speaker 1: head and the softness of the heart. And I think
9:03
Speaker 1: it was very politely said of mister Wilkes to one
9:07
Speaker 1: who told him there was a general weeping for Indiana.
9:11
Speaker 1: I'll warrant he'll fight ne'er the worst for that to
9:16
Speaker 1: be apt. To give way to the impressions of humanity
9:20
Speaker 1: is the excellence of a right disposition and the natural
9:24
Speaker 1: working of a well turned spirit. But as I have
9:28
Speaker 1: suffered by critics who have got no farther than to
9:32
Speaker 1: inquire whether they ought to be pleased or not, I
9:35
Speaker 1: would willingly find them proper a matter for their employment,
9:39
Speaker 1: and revive here a song which was omitted for want
9:43
Speaker 1: of a performer and designed for the entertainment of Indiana
9:49
Speaker 1: Senior Carbonelli, instead of it played on the fiddle. And
9:54
Speaker 1: it is for want of a singer that such advantageous
9:57
Speaker 1: things are said of an instrument which were designed for
10:01
Speaker 1: a voice. The song is the distress of a love
10:06
Speaker 1: sick maid, and may be a fit entertainment for some
10:10
Speaker 1: small critics to examine whether the passion is just or
10:15
Speaker 1: the distress male or female one from place to place forlorn,
10:23
Speaker 1: I go with downcast eyes, a silent shade forbidden to
10:29
Speaker 1: declare my woe to speak till spoken to afraid two,
10:36
Speaker 1: my inward pangs, my secret grief, my soft consenting looks.
10:42
Speaker 1: Betray he loves for gives me no relief. Why speaks
10:49
Speaker 1: not he who may it remains to say a word
10:54
Speaker 1: concerning Terence? And I am extremely surprised to find what
10:59
Speaker 1: mister Zibba told me prove a truth that what I
11:03
Speaker 1: valued myself so much upon the translation of him should
11:08
Speaker 1: be imputed to me as a reproach. Mister Cibber's zeal
11:13
Speaker 1: for the work, his care and application in instructing the
11:17
Speaker 1: actors and altering the disposition of the scenes when I
11:21
Speaker 1: was through sickness and able to cultivate such things myself,
11:26
Speaker 1: has been a very obliging favor and friendship to me.
11:31
Speaker 1: For this reason, I was very hardly persuaded to throw
11:35
Speaker 1: away Terence's celebrated funeral and take only the bare authority
11:40
Speaker 1: of the young man's character and how I have worked
11:44
Speaker 1: it into an englishman a made use of the same
11:48
Speaker 1: circumstances of discovering a daughter when we least hoped for one,
11:52
Speaker 1: is humbly submitted to the learned reader. Prologue by mister Waller,
12:00
Speaker 1: spoken by mister Wilkes. To win your hearts and to
12:05
Speaker 1: secure your praise. The comic writers strive by various ways,
12:11
Speaker 1: by subtle stratagems, they act their game and leave untried
12:16
Speaker 1: no avenue to fame. One writes the spouse of beating
12:21
Speaker 1: from his wife, and says each stroke was copied from
12:25
Speaker 1: the life. Some affix all wit and humor in grimace
12:30
Speaker 1: and make a livelihood of Pinkie's face. Here, one gay
12:36
Speaker 1: show and costly habits tries confiding to the judgment of
12:41
Speaker 1: your eyes. Another smuts his scene, a cunning shaver, sure
12:48
Speaker 1: of the rakes and of the wench's favor. Oft of
12:52
Speaker 1: these arts prevailed, and one may guess if practiced or again,
12:57
Speaker 1: would find success. But the bold sage the poet of
13:03
Speaker 1: to Night, by new and desperate rules, resolv'd to write,
13:09
Speaker 1: fain would he give more? Just applauses? Rise and please
13:13
Speaker 1: by wit that scorns the aides of vice. The praise
13:18
Speaker 1: he seeks from worthier motive springs. Such praise as praise
13:23
Speaker 1: to those that give it, brings your aid most humbly
13:28
Speaker 1: sought than Briton's lend, and liberal mirth, Like liberal men,
13:33
Speaker 1: defend no more, let ribaldry with license writ usurp the
13:40
Speaker 1: name of eloquence, or wit no more let lawless farce,
13:45
Speaker 1: and cinsure to go the lude dull gleanings of a
13:49
Speaker 1: Smithfield show tis yours with breeding, to refine the age,
13:55
Speaker 1: to chasten, wit and moralize the stage, Ye modest wise
14:02
Speaker 1: and good, Ye fare ye brave to knight, the champion
14:07

16:00
Speaker 14: Have you ordered that I should not be interrupted while
16:03
Speaker 14: I am dressing?
16:04
Speaker 6: Yes, Sir, I believe you had something of moment to
16:08
Speaker 6: say to me.
16:10
Speaker 14: Let me see, Humphrey. I think it is now full
16:13
Speaker 14: forty years since I first took THEE to be about myself.
16:17
Speaker 6: I thank you, sir. It has been an easy forty years,
16:22
Speaker 6: and I have passed them without much sickness, scare or labor.
16:26
Speaker 14: Thou hast a brave constitution. You are a year or
16:30
Speaker 14: two older than I am, Sir.
16:32
Speaker 6: Ah you have ever been of that mind?
16:35
Speaker 2: Sir?
16:36
Speaker 14: You knave you know it. I took THEE for thy
16:39
Speaker 14: gravity and sobriety in my wild.
16:41
Speaker 6: Years, Ah, Sir, Our manners were formed from our different fortunes,
16:47
Speaker 6: not our different age. Wilth gave a loose to your
16:51
Speaker 6: youth and poverty put a restraint upon mine.
16:56
Speaker 14: Well, Humphrey, you know I have been a kind master
17:00
Speaker 14: to you. I have used you for the ingenuous nature
17:03
Speaker 14: I observed in you from the beginning, more like a
17:06
Speaker 14: humble friend than a servant.
17:08
Speaker 6: I humbly beg you'll be so tender of me as
17:11
Speaker 6: to explain your commands, sir, without any farther preparation.
17:16
Speaker 14: I'll tell THEE. Then, in the first place, this wedding
17:20
Speaker 14: of my sons, in all probability shut the door will
17:26
Speaker 14: never be at all.
17:28
Speaker 6: How sir, not to be at all? For what reason
17:33
Speaker 6: is it carried on in appearance?
17:36
Speaker 14: Honest, Humphrey, have patience, and I'll tell THEE all in order.
17:40
Speaker 14: I have myself, in some part of my life, lived
17:45
Speaker 14: indeed with freedom, but I hope without reproach. Now, I
17:51
Speaker 14: thought liberty would be as little injurious to my son. Therefore,
17:57
Speaker 14: as soon as he grew towards man, I indulged him
18:00
Speaker 14: in living after his own manner. I knew not how
18:03
Speaker 14: otherwise to judge of his inclination, for what can be
18:07
Speaker 14: concluded from a behavior under restraint and fear? But what
18:12
Speaker 14: charms me above all expression is that my son has never,
18:16
Speaker 14: in the least action the most distant hint or word,
18:20
Speaker 14: valued himself upon that great est state of his mother's, which,
18:24
Speaker 14: according to our marriage settlement, he has had ever since
18:27
Speaker 14: he came to age.
18:29
Speaker 6: No, Sir, on the contrary, he seems afraid of appearing
18:33
Speaker 6: to enjoy it before you or any belonging to you.
18:37
Speaker 6: He is as dependent and resigned to your will as
18:41
Speaker 6: if he had not a farthing but what must come
18:44
Speaker 6: from your immediate bounty. You have ever acted like a
18:49
Speaker 6: good and generous father, and he like an obedient and
18:52
Speaker 6: grateful son.
18:54
Speaker 14: Nay, his carriage is so easy to all with whom
18:57
Speaker 14: he converses, that he is never assuming, never prefers himself
19:02
Speaker 14: to others, nor ever is guilty of that rough sincerity
19:06
Speaker 14: which a man is not called to, and certainly disobliges
19:09
Speaker 14: most of his acquaintance to be short. Humphrey, his reputation
19:14
Speaker 14: was so fair in the world that Old Zealand, the
19:17
Speaker 14: great India merchant, has offered his only daughter and sole
19:21
Speaker 14: heiress to that vast estate of his as a wife
19:24
Speaker 14: for him. You may be sure I made no difficulties.
19:28
Speaker 14: The match was agreed on and this very day named
19:32
Speaker 14: for the wedding.
19:33
Speaker 6: What hinders the preceding?
19:36
Speaker 14: Don't interrupt me, you know, I was last Thursday at
19:40
Speaker 14: the masquerade. My son, you may remember, soon found us out.
19:45
Speaker 14: He knew his grandfather's habit, which I then wore. And
19:48
Speaker 14: though it was the mode in the last age, yet
19:52
Speaker 14: the maskers, you know, followed us as if we had
19:54
Speaker 14: been the most monstrous figures in that whole assembly.
19:58
Speaker 6: I remember, indeed, a young man of quality in the
20:01
Speaker 6: habit of a clown that was particularly troublesome.
20:05
Speaker 14: Right, he was too much what he seemed to be.
20:09
Speaker 14: You remember how impertinently he followed and teased us and
20:13
Speaker 14: would know who we were.
20:15
Speaker 6: Humphrey aside, I know he has a mind to come
20:19
Speaker 6: into that particular Aye.
20:22
Speaker 14: He followed us till a gentleman who led the lady
20:25
Speaker 14: in the India mantle, presented that gay creature to the
20:28
Speaker 14: rustic and bid him, like Simon in the fable, grow
20:31
Speaker 14: polite by falling in love and let that worthy old
20:35
Speaker 14: gentleman alone, meaning me. The clown was not reformed, but
20:40
Speaker 14: rudely persisted and offered to force off my mask with
20:44
Speaker 14: that the gentleman throwing off his own appeared to be
20:47
Speaker 14: my son, and in his concern for me, tore off
20:51
Speaker 14: that of the nobleman. At this they seized each other,
20:55
Speaker 14: the company called the gods, and in the surprise the
20:58
Speaker 14: lady swooned away, upon which my son quitted his adversary,
21:03
Speaker 14: and had now no care but of a lady. When
21:06
Speaker 14: raising her in his arms, art thou gone, cried he
21:10
Speaker 14: forever forbid it heaven. She revived at his known voice,
21:15
Speaker 14: and with the most familiar, though modest gesture, hangs in
21:19
Speaker 14: safety over his shoulder, weeping, but wept as in the
21:23
Speaker 14: arms of one before whom she could give herself a
21:25
Speaker 14: loose were she not under observation. While she hides her
21:29
Speaker 14: face in his neck, he carefully conveys her from the company.
21:33
Speaker 6: I have observed. This accident has dwelt upon you very strongly.
21:38
Speaker 14: Her uncommon air, her noble modesty, the dignity of her person,
21:43
Speaker 14: and the occasion itself drew the whole assembly together, and
21:48
Speaker 14: I soon heard it buzzed about. She was the adopted
21:50
Speaker 14: daughter of a famous sea officer who had served in France. Now,
21:55
Speaker 14: this unexpected and public discovery of my sons so deep
21:59
Speaker 14: concerned for her.
22:01
Speaker 6: Was what I supposed alarmed mister sealand in behalf of
22:04
Speaker 6: his daughter to break off the match.
22:08
Speaker 14: You are right. He came to me yesterday and said
22:11
Speaker 14: he thought himself disengaged from the bargain, being credibly informed
22:16
Speaker 14: my son was already married or worse to the lady
22:19
Speaker 14: at the masquerade. I palliated matters and insisted on our agreement.
22:24
Speaker 14: But we parted with little less than a direct breach
22:27
Speaker 14: between us.
22:29
Speaker 6: Well, sir, and what notice have you taken of all
22:32
Speaker 6: this to my young master?
22:34
Speaker 14: That's what I wanted to debate with you. I have
22:37
Speaker 14: said nothing to him yet, But look, you, Humphrey. If
22:41
Speaker 14: there is so much in this armor of his that
22:43
Speaker 14: he denies upon my summons to marry, I have cause
22:46
Speaker 14: enough to be offended. And then by my insisting upon
22:50
Speaker 14: his marrying to day, I shall know how far he
22:53
Speaker 14: is engaged to this lady in masquerade, and from thence
22:57
Speaker 14: only shall be able to take my measures. In the meantime,
23:02
Speaker 14: I would have you find out how far that rogue
23:04
Speaker 14: his man is let into his secret. He I know,
23:09
Speaker 14: will play tricks as much to cross me as to
23:11
Speaker 14: serve his master.
23:13
Speaker 6: Why do you think of him so, sir? I believe
23:16
Speaker 6: he is no worse than I was for you at
23:19
Speaker 6: your son's age.
23:21
Speaker 14: I see it in the rascal's looks. But I have
23:24
Speaker 14: dwelt on these things too long. I'll go to my
23:27
Speaker 14: son immediately, and while I'm gone, your part is to
23:30
Speaker 14: convince his rogue Tom that I am in earnest. I'll
23:35
Speaker 14: leave him to you.
23:37
Speaker 1: Exit, Sir John Bethel.
23:39
Speaker 6: Well, though this father in Suddon live as well together
23:42
Speaker 6: as possible, yet their fear of giving each other pain
23:45
Speaker 6: is attended with constant mutual uneasiness. I'm sure I have
23:50
Speaker 6: enough to do to be honest and yet keep well
23:53
Speaker 6: with them both. But they know I love him, and
23:56
Speaker 6: that makes the task less painful. However, Oh, here's the
24:02
Speaker 6: prince of poor Coxcomb's, the representative of all the better
24:06
Speaker 6: fed than tought. Ho Ho, Tom whither so gay and
24:11
Speaker 6: so airy this morning?
24:12
Speaker 1: And to Tom singing.
24:15
Speaker 7: Sir, we sevens of single gentlemen are another kind of
24:18
Speaker 7: people than you, domestic or no judges that to business,
24:22
Speaker 7: we a race above you. The pleasures of boad wages,
24:25
Speaker 7: tavern dinners and many are clear. Gain theyse alas you
24:29
Speaker 7: never heard or dreamed of.
24:32
Speaker 6: Thou hast folly's and vices enough for a man of
24:34
Speaker 6: ten thousand a year. Oh tis, But as to the
24:37
Speaker 6: day that I sent for you to town to put
24:40
Speaker 6: you into mister Sealand's family, that you might learn a
24:43
Speaker 6: little before I put you to my young master, who
24:47
Speaker 6: is too gentle for twenty such a rude thing as
24:49
Speaker 6: you were, in too proper obedience. You then pulled off
24:54
Speaker 6: your hat to every one you met in the street,
24:57
Speaker 6: like a bashful, great awkward cub as you were. But
25:00
Speaker 6: your great oaken cudgel, when you were a bobby became
25:03
Speaker 6: you much better than that dangling stick got your button.
25:07
Speaker 6: Now you are a fop that's fit for nothing except
25:11
Speaker 6: it hangs there to be ready for your master's hand
25:14
Speaker 6: when you are impertinent.
25:17
Speaker 7: Uncle Humphrey, you know, my master scorns to stroke you sevensok,
25:21
Speaker 7: as if the world was now just as it was
25:23
Speaker 7: when my old master and you were in your youth,
25:26
Speaker 7: when you went to dinner, Because it was so much
25:28
Speaker 7: a clock when the great blow was given in the
25:31
Speaker 7: hall at the pontry door, and all the family came
25:35
Speaker 7: out of the hose in such strange dresses and formal
25:37
Speaker 7: faces as you've seen the pictures in a long gallery
25:40
Speaker 7: in the country.
25:42
Speaker 6: Why you wild rogue.
25:44
Speaker 7: You could not fall to your dinner til a formal
25:47
Speaker 7: fellow in a black gown said something of the meat
25:50
Speaker 7: if the cook had not made it ready enough?
25:52
Speaker 6: Sirrah, who do you prate after the spisy men of
25:56
Speaker 6: sacred characters? I hope you never heard my good young
26:00
Speaker 6: master talked so like a profligant.
26:03
Speaker 7: Sir, I say you put upon me when I first
26:05
Speaker 7: came to town, about being orderly, the doctrine of wearing
26:08
Speaker 7: shamste and linen last clean a fortnight, keeping my clothes fresh,
26:11
Speaker 7: and wearing a frog with indoors.
26:14
Speaker 6: So ah, I gave you those lessons because I supposed
26:17
Speaker 6: at the time your master and you might have dined
26:21
Speaker 6: at home every day and cost you nothing. Then you
26:24
Speaker 6: might have made a good family servant. But the gang
26:28
Speaker 6: you have frequented since at chocolate houses in taverns, in
26:32
Speaker 6: a continual round of noise and extravagance.
26:35
Speaker 7: I don't know what you heavy inmates call noise and extravagance.
26:39
Speaker 7: But we gentlemen, who are well fed and cut a figure, sir,
26:42
Speaker 7: think it a fine life that we must be very
26:45
Speaker 7: pretty fellows who are kept only to be looked at.
26:49
Speaker 6: Very well, Sir, I hope the fashion of being lewed,
26:53
Speaker 6: an extravagant despising of decency and order, is almost at
26:58
Speaker 6: an end, since it has arrived at persons of your quality.
27:03
Speaker 7: Master Humphrey, you are an unhappy lad to be sent
27:06
Speaker 7: up to town in such queer days as you were.
27:09
Speaker 7: Why now, sir, the lackeys are the men of pleasure
27:11
Speaker 7: of the age. The top gamesters, and many a lace
27:14
Speaker 7: out about town have had their education in our party
27:17
Speaker 7: colored regiment. Her false lovers, have a taste of music, poetry,
27:22
Speaker 7: being do dress, politics, ruined damsels. And when we are
27:27
Speaker 7: tired of this, eleude town and of a mind to
27:29
Speaker 7: take up whip into our master's wigs and linen and
27:32
Speaker 7: merry fortunes hey day. Nay, sir, our order is carried
27:36
Speaker 7: up to the highest dignities and distinctions. Step but into
27:39
Speaker 7: the painted chamber, and by our titles you take us
27:42
Speaker 7: all for men of quality. Then again come down to
27:45
Speaker 7: the court of requests, and you see us all laying
27:48
Speaker 7: our brogrenades together for the good of the nation. And
27:51
Speaker 7: though we never carry a question nemine called to cente
27:54
Speaker 7: at this I can say with a safe conscience, And
27:56
Speaker 7: I wish every gentleman about cloth could lay his and
27:59
Speaker 7: upon his heart and say the same. So I never
28:01
Speaker 7: took so much as a single mug of beer for
28:04
Speaker 7: my version all my life.
28:06
Speaker 6: SA, there is no enduring your extravagance. I'll hear you
28:11
Speaker 6: prayed no longer. I wanted to see you to inquire
28:14
Speaker 6: how things go with your master, as far as you
28:17
Speaker 6: understand them. I suppose he knows he is to be
28:21
Speaker 6: buried to day.
28:22
Speaker 7: Ay, sir, he knows it, and he's dressed as gay
28:25
Speaker 7: as the sun. But between you and I, my dear,
28:27
Speaker 7: he has a very heavy heart and all that gaiety.
28:30
Speaker 7: As soon as he was dressed, I retired, but overheard
28:33
Speaker 7: him sigh in the most heavy manner. He walked thoughtfully
28:37
Speaker 7: to and fro in the room, and went into his closet.
28:40
Speaker 7: When he came out, he gave me this for his mistress.
28:42
Speaker 7: Whose maid you know?
28:43
Speaker 6: It's passionately fond of your fine person.
28:47
Speaker 7: The poor fool is so tender and loves to hear
28:50
Speaker 7: me talk of the world and the plays, operas, and
28:52
Speaker 7: her daughters. For the winter, the parks and bells eides
28:56
Speaker 7: for our summer diversions. And lad says she, you are
28:59
Speaker 7: so wild, but you have a world of humor a coxcomb.
29:04
Speaker 6: Well, but why don't you run with your master's letter
29:08
Speaker 6: to missus Lecinda as he ordered you?
29:11
Speaker 7: Because mister Lecinda is not so easy I come out
29:14
Speaker 7: as you think, for not easily come back?
29:18
Speaker 6: Why Sarah are not her father and my old master
29:21
Speaker 6: agreed that she and mister Bevil are to be one
29:24
Speaker 6: flesh before tomorrow morning.
29:27
Speaker 7: It's no matter for that her mother seems, mister Sealand
29:31
Speaker 7: has not agreed to it. And you must know, Master Humphrey,
29:34
Speaker 7: that in that family, the gray mare is the better horse.
29:38
Speaker 6: What does that mean?
29:40
Speaker 7: In one word, mister Sealand pretends to have a will
29:43
Speaker 7: of her own, and has provided a relation of hers
29:46
Speaker 7: a stiff starched philosopher and a wise fool for her daughter,
29:51
Speaker 7: for which reason, for these ten days past she has
29:55
Speaker 7: suffered no message nor letter from my master to come
29:57
Speaker 7: near her.
29:59
Speaker 6: And where had you This intelligence.
30:02
Speaker 7: From a foolish fond server can keep nothing from me
30:06
Speaker 7: one that will deliver this letter to if she is
30:09
Speaker 7: rightly managed?
30:10
Speaker 6: What you're pretty handmaid, and missus phillis even.
30:15
Speaker 7: She sir, this is a very hour. You know she
30:17
Speaker 7: usually comes hither under a pretense of a visit to
30:20
Speaker 7: your housekeeper forsooth, but in reality you'd have a glance
30:23
Speaker 7: at your sweet face.
30:25
Speaker 6: I warrant you.
30:27
Speaker 7: Nothing else in nature. You must know I love to
30:29
Speaker 7: fet and play with a little wanton.
30:31
Speaker 6: Play with the little waden. What will this world come to?
30:36
Speaker 7: I met her this morning in a new manteau and
30:39
Speaker 7: petticoat not a bit the worse for her, lady is wearing,
30:42
Speaker 7: and she's always near thoughts and new airs with new clothes.
30:46
Speaker 7: Then she never fails to see some glance or gesture
30:49
Speaker 7: from every visit into the house, and indeed the whole
30:52
Speaker 7: town of the Coquettes at second hand. But here she
30:55
Speaker 7: comes in one motion. She speaks and describes herself better
30:58
Speaker 7: than all the words and world can.
31:01
Speaker 6: Then I hope, dear sir, when your own affair is over,
31:04
Speaker 6: you will be so good as to mind your master's
31:07
Speaker 6: with her.
31:08
Speaker 7: Dear Humphrey, you know my master is my friend, and
31:11
Speaker 7: those are people I never forget.
31:13
Speaker 6: Ah sauciness itself. But I'll leave you to do your
31:18
Speaker 6: best for him.
31:19
Speaker 1: Exit and to Phyllis.
31:22
Speaker 13: Oh, mister Thomas is missus sugarkey at home, that one
31:27
Speaker 13: is almost ashamed to pass along the streets. The town
31:30
Speaker 13: is quite empty, and nobody of fashion left in it,
31:34
Speaker 13: and the ordinary people do stare to see anything dressed
31:37
Speaker 13: like a woman of condition, as if it were on
31:40
Speaker 13: the same floor as them pass by. Alas, alas, it
31:45
Speaker 13: is a sad thing to walk, Oh, fortune, fortune.
31:50
Speaker 7: What a sad thing to walk? Why, Madam Phillis, do
31:54
Speaker 7: you wish yourself lame?
31:56
Speaker 13: No, mister Tom, but I wish I would generally carry
32:00
Speaker 13: a coach or a chair, and of a fortune neither
32:04
Speaker 13: to stand nor go, but to tatter or slide, to
32:10
Speaker 13: be short sighted, or to stare, to fleer in the face,
32:16
Speaker 13: to look distant, to observe, to overlook. Yet all become me.
32:24
Speaker 13: And if I was rich, I could twire and lull
32:28
Speaker 13: as well as the best of them. Ah, Oh, Tom Tom,
32:35
Speaker 13: is it not a pity that you should be so
32:38
Speaker 13: great a coxcomb, and I so great a coquette, and
32:42
Speaker 13: yet be such poor devils as we are.
32:46
Speaker 7: Mistress Phyllis, I am your humble servant for that?
32:50
Speaker 13: Yes, mister Thomas, I know how much you are my
32:53
Speaker 13: humble servant, And I know what you said to Miss
32:57
Speaker 13: Judy upon seeing her in one of her ladies, lost
33:00
Speaker 13: Monteaus that anyone would have thought her the lady, and
33:05
Speaker 13: that she had ordered the other to wear it till
33:07
Speaker 13: it sat easy for now only it was becoming to
33:11
Speaker 13: my lady. It was only a covering to miss Judy.
33:15
Speaker 13: It was a habit, this you said after somebody or other. Oh, Tom, Tom,
33:22
Speaker 13: thou art as false in his face as the best
33:24
Speaker 13: gentleman of them all. Ah, But you wretch, talk to
33:29
Speaker 13: me no more on the old odious subject, don't they say.
33:33
Speaker 1: Tom, in a submissive tone, retiring.
33:37
Speaker 7: I know not how to resist your commands, madam hah.
33:41
Speaker 13: Commands about party and are grown mighty easy to you
33:45
Speaker 13: of late Tom.
33:47
Speaker 7: Aside, I have a I have nettled and put into
33:51
Speaker 7: the right temper to be brought upon and set a
33:53
Speaker 7: prating why truly to be playing with you? Missus? Phitllis.
33:57
Speaker 7: I can take little comfort of late and frequent.
34:01
Speaker 8: Pray.
34:02
Speaker 13: Mister Thomas, What is it all of a sudden offends
34:04
Speaker 13: your nicety at our house?
34:07
Speaker 7: I don't care to speak particulars, but I dislike the whole.
34:11
Speaker 13: Huh, I thank you, sir, I am part of that hole.
34:16
Speaker 7: Mistake me not good phyllis.
34:18
Speaker 13: Good phillis saucy enough.
34:21
Speaker 7: But however, I say, it is that thou art a
34:24
Speaker 7: part which gives me pain for the disposition of the whole.
34:28
Speaker 7: You must know, madam, to be serious. I am a
34:30
Speaker 7: man at the bottom of prodigious nice honor. You are
34:34
Speaker 7: too much exposed to company at your house to be plain.
34:37
Speaker 7: I don't like so many that would be your mistress
34:40
Speaker 7: lover's whispering to you.
34:42
Speaker 13: Don't think to put that upon me. You say this
34:45
Speaker 13: because I wrung you to the heart when I touch
34:47
Speaker 13: your guilty conscience about Judy.
34:50
Speaker 7: Ah, phyllis phyllis if you button you.
34:53
Speaker 13: My heart, huh, I know too much on it.
34:58
Speaker 7: Nay, then poor Chris fate in mine are one. Therefore
35:02
Speaker 7: give me later say I'll sing at least as he
35:05
Speaker 7: does upon the same occasion, svidity, etc.
35:11
Speaker 13: What do you think I'm to be fobbed off with
35:14
Speaker 13: a song? I don't question. But you have sung the
35:18
Speaker 13: same to miss Judy too.
35:20
Speaker 7: Don't despair as your charms good phyllis with jealousy of
35:23
Speaker 7: so worth this an object. Besides, she is a poor hussy.
35:27
Speaker 7: And if you doubt the sincerity of my love, you
35:29
Speaker 7: will allow me true to my interest. You are a fortune, Phyllis,
35:34
Speaker 7: What the.
35:34
Speaker 13: Fuck be it?
35:35
Speaker 8: Now?
35:36
Speaker 13: In good time? Indeed you shall be setting up a fortune.
35:40
Speaker 7: Dear mistress Phyllis, you have such a spirit that we
35:43
Speaker 7: shall never be done in marriage when we come together.
35:45
Speaker 7: But I tell you are a fortune, and you have
35:48
Speaker 7: an estate in my hands.
35:50
Speaker 1: He pulls out a purse. She isaac, what pretense have
35:55
Speaker 1: I to?
35:55
Speaker 13: What is in your hands? Mister tom As?
35:57
Speaker 7: Thus there are ours. You know? When a lady is
36:00
Speaker 7: neither pleased or displeased, neither sick or well, when she
36:05
Speaker 7: lulls or loiters, when she is without desires from having
36:09
Speaker 7: more of everything than she.
36:10
Speaker 13: Knows what to do with, Well, what then, when she.
36:14
Speaker 7: Is not life enough to keep her bright eyes quite
36:17
Speaker 7: open to look at her own dear image in the glass.
36:21
Speaker 13: Explain thyself, and don't be so fond of they own pretting.
36:26
Speaker 7: There are also prosperous and good natured moments. Is when
36:29
Speaker 7: a knot or a patch is happily fixed, when the
36:32
Speaker 7: complexion particularly.
36:33
Speaker 13: Flourishes, Well, what then I have not patience?
36:38
Speaker 7: Why then? Or on the like occasions we servants who
36:42
Speaker 7: have skilled to know how to time business see when
36:45
Speaker 7: such a pretty folded thing as this shows a letter
36:49
Speaker 7: may be presented, laid or dropped as best suits the
36:52
Speaker 7: present humor and Madam, because it is a long, wearisome
36:57
Speaker 7: journey to run through all the several stages of a
36:59
Speaker 7: lady's temper. My master, who is the most reasonable man
37:03
Speaker 7: in the world, presents you this to bear your charges
37:06
Speaker 7: on the road, gives.
37:07
Speaker 1: Her the purse.
37:09
Speaker 13: Hah, Now you think me a corrupt hussy?
37:12
Speaker 7: Oh fi, I only think you'll take the letter.
37:16
Speaker 13: Nay, I know you do, But I know my own innocence.
37:20
Speaker 13: I take it for my mistress's sake.
37:23
Speaker 7: I know it, my pretty one, I know it.
37:26
Speaker 13: Yes, I say, I do it because I would not
37:28
Speaker 13: have my mistress deluded by one who gives no proof
37:31
Speaker 13: of his passion. But I'll talk more of tips as
37:34
Speaker 13: you see me on my way home. No, Tom, are
37:37
Speaker 13: you sure thee I take this trash of thy masters
37:41
Speaker 13: not for the value of the thing, but as it
37:44
Speaker 13: convinces me he has a true respect for my mistress.
37:48
Speaker 13: I remember, a verse to the purpose. They may be
37:51
Speaker 13: false who languish and complain, but they who part with
37:55
Speaker 13: money never fagin.
37:58
Speaker 1: Excellent, seem to bevil Junior's lodgings Bevil Junior reading.
38:06
Speaker 3: These moral writers practice virtue after death. This charming vision
38:11
Speaker 3: of Mercer, such an author consulted in a morning sets
38:14
Speaker 3: the spirit for the vicissitudes of the day better than
38:18
Speaker 3: the glass does a man's person. For what a day
38:21
Speaker 3: I have to go through to put on an easy
38:23
Speaker 3: look with an aching heart. If this lady my father
38:26
Speaker 3: urges me to marry, should not refuse me. My dilemma
38:30
Speaker 3: is insupportable. But why should I fear it? Is she
38:33
Speaker 3: not in equal distress with me? Has not the letter
38:36
Speaker 3: I sent her this morning confessed my inclination to another? Nay,
38:41
Speaker 3: have I not moral assurances of her engagements too? To
38:44
Speaker 3: my friend Myrtle, it's impossible, But she must give in
38:47
Speaker 3: to it for sure. To be denied as a favor
38:50
Speaker 3: any man may pretend to it must be so.
38:53
Speaker 8: Well.
38:53
Speaker 3: Then, with the assurance of being rejected, I think I
38:56
Speaker 3: may confidently say to my father I am ready to
38:59
Speaker 3: marry her. Then let me resolve upon what I'm not
39:02
Speaker 3: very good at, though is an honest dissimulation?
39:06
Speaker 7: Enter Tom, Sir, John Bevill's sair is in the next.
39:10
Speaker 3: Room, Dunce, why did you not bring him in.
39:13
Speaker 7: I told him, say you were in your closet.
39:16
Speaker 3: I thought you had known, Sir, it was my duty
39:18
Speaker 3: to see my father anywhere.
39:20
Speaker 1: Going himself to the door tom aside.
39:24
Speaker 7: The devils in my master, ye are always more wit than.
39:27
Speaker 1: I have bevil Junior introducing Sir John.
39:32
Speaker 3: Sir, you are the most gallant, the most complaisant of
39:35
Speaker 3: all parents. Sure tis not a compliment to say these
39:38
Speaker 3: lodgings are yours? Why would you not walk in?
39:41
Speaker 2: Sir?
39:42
Speaker 14: I was loth to interrupt you unsusonably on your wedding day.
39:46
Speaker 3: One to whom I am beholden for my birthday might
39:49
Speaker 3: have used less ceremony.
39:51
Speaker 14: All well, son, I have intelligence you have read to
39:54
Speaker 14: your mistress this morning. It would please my curiosity to
39:58
Speaker 14: know the contents of a way day letter for courtship
40:02
Speaker 14: must then be over.
40:04
Speaker 3: I assure you, sir, there is no insolence in it
40:06
Speaker 3: upon the prospect of such a fast fortunes being added
40:09
Speaker 3: to our family, but much acknowledgment of the lady's greater dessert.
40:14
Speaker 14: But dear Jack, are you in earnest in all this?
40:18
Speaker 14: And will you really marry her?
40:20
Speaker 3: Did I ever disobey any command of yours, sir, nay
40:23
Speaker 3: any inclination that I saw you bent upon?
40:26
Speaker 14: Why I can't say you have son? But methinks in
40:30
Speaker 14: this whole business you have not been so warm as
40:33
Speaker 14: I could have wished you. You have visited her, It's true,
40:37
Speaker 14: but you have not been particular. Everyone knows you can
40:41
Speaker 14: say and do as handsome things as any man. But
40:44
Speaker 14: you have done nothing but lived in the general, been
40:46
Speaker 14: complaisant only.
40:48
Speaker 3: As I am ever prepared to marry if you bid me.
40:50
Speaker 3: So I am ready to let it alone if you
40:52
Speaker 3: will have me.
40:53
Speaker 1: Humphreyants unobserved.
40:56
Speaker 14: Look you there, now? Why what am I to think
41:00
Speaker 14: of this? So absolute and so indifferent a resignation?
41:04
Speaker 3: Think that I am still your son?
41:06
Speaker 8: Sir?
41:06
Speaker 3: You have been married and I have not, And you have, sir,
41:10
Speaker 3: found the inconvenience there is when a man weds with
41:13
Speaker 3: too much love in his head. I have been told, sir,
41:16
Speaker 3: that at the time you married, you made a mighty bustle.
41:19
Speaker 3: On the occasion, there was challenging and fighting, scaling wauls,
41:23
Speaker 3: locking up the lady and the gallant under an arrest
41:26
Speaker 3: for fear of killing all his rivals. Now, Sir, I
41:29
Speaker 3: suppose you have found the ill consequences of these strong
41:32
Speaker 3: passions and prejudices in preference of one woman to another
41:36
Speaker 3: in case of a man's becoming a widower. How is this,
41:41
Speaker 3: I say, sir, experience has made you wiser in your
41:44
Speaker 3: care of me. For Sir, since you lost my dear mother,
41:47
Speaker 3: your time has been so heavy, so lonely, and so tasteless,
41:52
Speaker 3: that you are so good as to guard me against
41:54
Speaker 3: the like unhappiness by marrying me prudently by way of
41:58
Speaker 3: bargain and sale. For as you well judge, a woman
42:02
Speaker 3: that is espoused for a fortune is yet a better
42:04
Speaker 3: bargain if she dies. For then a man still enjoys
42:08
Speaker 3: what he did marry the money, and is disencumbent of
42:11
Speaker 3: what he did not marry the woman.
42:13
Speaker 14: But pray, sir, do you think the cinder then, a
42:17
Speaker 14: woman of that little merit?
42:19
Speaker 3: Pardon me, sir, I don't care it so far neither.
42:23
Speaker 3: I am rather afraid I shall like her too well.
42:25
Speaker 3: She has for one of her fortune, a great many,
42:28
Speaker 3: needless and superfluous good qualities.
42:31
Speaker 14: I'm afraid, son, there's something I don't see yet, something
42:35
Speaker 14: that's smothered under all the raillery.
42:37
Speaker 3: Not in the least, sir, if the lady is dressed
42:40
Speaker 3: and ready, you see I am. I suppose the lawyers
42:43
Speaker 3: are ready too, Humphrey aside.
42:46
Speaker 6: Oh, this may grow warm if I don't interpose, Sir.
42:51
Speaker 6: Mister Sealand is at the coffee house and has sent
42:54
Speaker 6: to speak with you.
42:56
Speaker 14: Oh that's well, then I warrant the lawyers already. Son,
43:01
Speaker 14: you'll be in the way, you say.
43:04
Speaker 3: If you please, sir, I'll take a chair and go
43:06
Speaker 3: to mister Seeland's where the young lady and I will
43:08
Speaker 3: wait your leisure. By no means the old fellow will
43:13
Speaker 3: be so vain if he sees aye. But the young lady,
43:16
Speaker 3: Sir will think me so indifferent.
43:19
Speaker 1: Humphrey aside to bevil Junior.
43:22
Speaker 6: Aye, there you are right, press your readiness to go
43:26
Speaker 6: to the bride. He won't let.
43:28
Speaker 1: You bevil Junior aside to Humphrey, Are.
43:32
Speaker 3: You sure of that?
43:34
Speaker 6: How he likes being prevented.
43:37
Speaker 1: Sir John bevill looking on his watch.
43:40
Speaker 14: No, No, you are an hour or two two early.
43:44
Speaker 3: You'll allow me, sir to think it too late to
43:46
Speaker 3: visit a beautiful, virtuous young woman in the pride and
43:50
Speaker 3: bloom of life, ready to give herself to my arms
43:53
Speaker 3: and place her happiness or misery for the future. In
43:56
Speaker 3: being agreeable or displeasing to me is a coola.
44:00
Speaker 14: Chere No no, no, dear Jack, this ceiling is a
44:05
Speaker 14: moody old fellow. There is no dealing with some people,
44:09
Speaker 14: but by managing with indifference. We must leave to him
44:12
Speaker 14: the conduct of this day. It is the last of
44:15
Speaker 14: his commanding his daughter.
44:17
Speaker 3: Sir, he can't take it ill that I am impatient
44:20
Speaker 3: to be hers.
44:22
Speaker 14: Pray let me govern in this matter. You can't tell
44:25
Speaker 14: how humorsome some old fellows are. There is no offering
44:29
Speaker 14: reason to some of them, especially when they are rich.
44:32
Speaker 1: A side.
44:33
Speaker 14: If my son should see him before I brought all
44:35
Speaker 14: ceilin into better temper, the match would be impracticable.
44:39
Speaker 1: Humphrey aside to Sir John.
44:41
Speaker 6: Pray, Sir, let me beg you to let mister Bevill
44:44
Speaker 6: go see whether he will or not.
44:48
Speaker 1: Then to Befel, pray, sir.
44:50
Speaker 6: Command yourself. Since you see my master as positive, it
44:54
Speaker 6: is better you should not go.
44:56
Speaker 3: My father commands me asked the object of my affection,
45:00
Speaker 3: but I hope he will not ask to the warmth
45:02
Speaker 3: and height of them.
45:04
Speaker 14: So I must even leave things as I found them,
45:08
Speaker 14: and in the meantime at least keep old siouand out
45:11
Speaker 14: of his sight. Well, son, i'll go myself and take
45:15
Speaker 14: orders in your affair. You'll be in the way, I
45:18
Speaker 14: suppose if I send to you, I'll leave your old
45:21
Speaker 14: friend with you, Humphrey. Don't let him stir. D'ye hear
45:25
Speaker 14: your servant? Your servant exit, Sir John.
45:30
Speaker 6: I have a sad time on it, sir, between you
45:33
Speaker 6: and my master. I see you are unwilling, and I
45:37
Speaker 6: know his violent inclinations. For the match, I must betray
45:42
Speaker 6: neither and yet deceive you both for your common good.
45:47
Speaker 6: Heaven grant a good end of this matter. Ah, but
45:50
Speaker 6: there's a lady, sir, that gives your father much trouble
45:54
Speaker 6: and sorrow. You'll pardon me, Humphrey.
45:58
Speaker 3: I know thou art a friend to both, and in
46:00
Speaker 3: that confidence I dare tell thee that lady is a
46:03
Speaker 3: woman of honor and virtue. You may assure yourself I
46:07
Speaker 3: never will marry without my father's consent, But give me
46:10
Speaker 3: leave to say too. This declaration does not come up
46:14
Speaker 3: to a promise that I will take whomsoever he pleases.
46:18
Speaker 6: Come, sir, I wholly understand you. You would engage my
46:22
Speaker 6: services to free you from this woman whom my master
46:25
Speaker 6: intends you to make way in time for the woman
46:29
Speaker 6: you have really a mind.
46:30
Speaker 3: To honest, Humphrey, you have always been a useful friend
46:34
Speaker 3: my father myself. I beg you continue your good offices,
46:38
Speaker 3: and don't let us come to the necessity of dispute.
46:41
Speaker 3: For if we should dispute, I must either part with
46:45
Speaker 3: more than life or lose the best of fathers.
46:48
Speaker 6: My dear Master, were I but worthy to know this
46:51
Speaker 6: secret that so near concerns you my life, my all
46:56
Speaker 6: should be engaged to serve you this, sir, I dear
47:00
Speaker 6: promise that I am sure I will and can be
47:04
Speaker 6: secret your trust at worst, but leaves you where you were.
47:09
Speaker 6: And if I cannot serve you, I will at once
47:11
Speaker 6: be plain and tell you.
47:13
Speaker 11: So.
47:14
Speaker 3: That's all I ask. Thou hast made it now my
47:16
Speaker 3: interest to trust thee. Be patient then, and hear the
47:19
Speaker 3: story of my heart.
47:21
Speaker 6: I am all attention.
47:23
Speaker 2: Sir.
47:24
Speaker 3: You may remember, Humphrey, that in my last travels, my
47:27
Speaker 3: father grew uneasy at my making so long a stay
47:30
Speaker 3: at Toulon.
47:31
Speaker 6: I remember it. He was apprehensive some woman had laid
47:35
Speaker 6: hold of you.
47:36
Speaker 3: His fears were just for there I first saw this lady.
47:40
Speaker 3: She is of English birth. Her father's name was Danvers,
47:44
Speaker 3: a younger brother of an ancient family, and originally an
47:47
Speaker 3: eminent merchant of Bristol, who, upon repeated misfortunes, was reduced
47:52
Speaker 3: to go privately to the Indies. In this retreat, Providence
47:56
Speaker 3: again grew favorable to his industry, and in six years
48:00
Speaker 3: time restored him to his former fortunes. On this he
48:03
Speaker 3: sent directions over that his wife and little family should
48:06
Speaker 3: follow him to the Indies. His wife, impatient to obey
48:11
Speaker 3: such welcome orders, would not wait the leisure of a convoy,
48:14
Speaker 3: but took the first occasion of a single ship, and
48:17
Speaker 3: with her husband's sister only and this daughter, then scarce
48:21
Speaker 3: seven years old, undertook the fatal voyage. For here, poor creature,
48:26
Speaker 3: she lost her liberty and life. She and her family,
48:30
Speaker 3: with all they had, were unfortunately taken by a privateer
48:34
Speaker 3: from Toulon, being thus made a prisoner, though as such
48:37
Speaker 3: not ill treated. Yet the fright, the shock and cruel
48:41
Speaker 3: disappointment seized with such violence upon her unhealthy frame. She sickened, pined,
48:47
Speaker 3: and died at sea.
48:50
Speaker 6: Poor soul. All the helpless infant.
48:53
Speaker 3: Her sister yet survived and had the care of her.
48:56
Speaker 3: The captain, too, proved to have humanity and became a
49:00
Speaker 3: father to her. For having himself married an englishwoman and
49:03
Speaker 3: being childless, he brought her into Toulon with her little countrywoman,
49:08
Speaker 3: presenting her with all her dead mother's movables of value
49:12
Speaker 3: to his wife, to be educated as his own adopted daughter.
49:16
Speaker 6: Fortune here seemed again to smile on her.
49:20
Speaker 3: Only to make her frowns more terrible, For in his
49:22
Speaker 3: height of fortune, this captain, too, her benefactor, unfortunately, was
49:27
Speaker 3: killed at sea, and dying intestate, his estate fol wholly
49:31
Speaker 3: to an advocate, his brother, who, coming to take possession there,
49:35
Speaker 3: found among his other riches this blooming virgin.
49:39
Speaker 6: At his mercy he durst, not, sir, abuse his power.
49:44
Speaker 3: No wonder if his pampered blood was fired at the
49:47
Speaker 3: sight of her. In short, he loved. But when all
49:50
Speaker 3: arts and gentle means had failed to move, he offered
49:53
Speaker 3: to his menaces in vain, denouncing vengeance on her cruelty,
49:57
Speaker 3: demanding her to account for all her maintenance for my childhood,
50:01
Speaker 3: seized on her little fortune as his own inheritance, and
50:04
Speaker 3: was dragging her by violence to prison, when Providence at
50:08
Speaker 3: the instant interposed and sent me by miracle to relieve her.
50:13
Speaker 6: Twas Providence indeed, but pray, sir, after all this trouble,
50:18
Speaker 6: how came this lady at last to England?
50:21
Speaker 3: The disappointed advocate, finding she had so unexpected a support
50:25
Speaker 3: on cooler thoughts, descended to a composition which I, without
50:30
Speaker 3: her knowledge, secretly discharged.
50:33
Speaker 6: That generous concealment made the obligation double.
50:36
Speaker 3: Having thus obtained her liberty, I prevailed, not without some difficulty,
50:41
Speaker 3: to see her safe to England, where no sooner arrived.
50:45
Speaker 3: But my father, jealous of my being imprudently engaged, immediately
50:49
Speaker 3: proposed this other fatal match that hangs upon my quiet.
50:54
Speaker 6: I find, sir, you are irrecoverably fixed upon this lady.
50:59
Speaker 3: As my five life dwells in my heart. And yet
51:03
Speaker 3: you see what I do to please my father, walk
51:05
Speaker 3: in this pageantry of dress, this splendid covering of sorrow.
51:09
Speaker 3: But Humphrey, you have your lesson.
51:13
Speaker 6: Now, Sir, I have but one material question.
51:17
Speaker 3: Ask it freely?
51:19
Speaker 6: Is it then your own passion for this secret lady
51:22
Speaker 6: or hers for you, that gives you this aversion to
51:25
Speaker 6: the match your father has proposed you.
51:28
Speaker 3: I shall appear, Humphrey, more romantic in my answer than
51:31
Speaker 3: in all the rest of my story. For though I
51:34
Speaker 3: dote on her to death, and have no little reason
51:37
Speaker 3: to believe she has the same thoughts for me, Yet
51:41
Speaker 3: in all my acquaintance and utmost privacies with her, I
51:45
Speaker 3: never once directly told her that I loved.
51:48
Speaker 6: How was it possible to avoid it?
51:51
Speaker 3: My tender obligations to my father have laid so inviolable
51:56
Speaker 3: a restraint upon my conduct that till I have his
51:59
Speaker 3: consent to speak, I am determined on that subject to
52:02
Speaker 3: be dumb forever.
52:05
Speaker 6: Well, Sir, to your praise, be it spoken. You are
52:07
Speaker 6: certainly the most unfashionable lover in Great Britain.
52:12
Speaker 7: And to Tom, Sir, Master Mergle's at the next door,
52:16
Speaker 7: and if you are at leisure, we'll be glad to
52:18
Speaker 7: wait on.
52:18
Speaker 3: You whenever he pleases. Hold Tom, did you receive no
52:23
Speaker 3: answer to my letter?
52:25
Speaker 12: Sir?
52:25
Speaker 7: I was desired to call again, for I was told
52:28
Speaker 7: him mother would not let her be out of her sight.
52:30
Speaker 7: But about an hour hence Mistress Lettis said, I should
52:34
Speaker 7: certainly have one.
52:35
Speaker 6: Very well exit, Tom, Sir, I will take another opportunity.
52:42
Speaker 6: In the meantime, I only think it proper to tell
52:45
Speaker 6: you that from a secret I know you may appear
52:48
Speaker 6: to your father as forward as you please to marry
52:51
Speaker 6: Lucinda without the least hazard of its coming to a conclusion, Sir,
52:56
Speaker 6: your most obedient servant.
52:59
Speaker 3: Honestly, Humphrey, continue but my friend in this exigence, and
53:04
Speaker 3: you shall always.
53:04
Speaker 1: Find me yours Exit, Humphrey.
53:08
Speaker 3: I long to hear how my letter has succeeded with Lucinda,
53:12
Speaker 3: but I think it cannot fail, for at worst, where
53:15
Speaker 3: I possible she could take it ill. Her resentment of
53:19
Speaker 3: my indifference may as probably occasion a delay as her
53:22
Speaker 3: taking it right. Poor Mertal, what terrors must he be
53:26
Speaker 3: in in all this? While, since he knows she is
53:29
Speaker 3: offered to me and refuse to him, there is no
53:32
Speaker 3: conversing or taking any measures with him for his own service.
53:37
Speaker 3: But I ought to bear with my friend and use
53:40
Speaker 3: him as one in adversity. All his disquiets by my
53:44
Speaker 3: own I prove the greatest grief's perplexity in love.
53:49
Speaker 1: Exit end of Act one, Act the second seen one
53:57
Speaker 1: Bevilginior's lodgings. Enter Bevil Junior and Tom sir master myrtle.
54:06
Speaker 3: Very well, do you step again and wait for an
54:09
Speaker 3: answer to my letter?
54:10
Speaker 1: Exit tom enter myrtle.
54:15
Speaker 3: Well, Charles, why so much care in thy countenance is
54:19
Speaker 3: though anything in this world deserves it? You, who used
54:22
Speaker 3: to be so gay, so opened, so vacant.
54:25
Speaker 4: I think we have of late changed complexions. You, who
54:29
Speaker 4: used to be much the graver man, are now all
54:32
Speaker 4: air in your behavior. But the cause of my concern
54:35
Speaker 4: may for aught, I know, be the same object that
54:38
Speaker 4: gives you all this satisfaction. In a word, I am
54:41
Speaker 4: told that you are this very day, and your dress
54:43
Speaker 4: confirms it to me to be married to Lucinda.
54:47
Speaker 3: You are not misinformed, nay, put not on the terrors
54:51
Speaker 3: of arrival till you hear me out. I shall disoblige
54:54
Speaker 3: the best of fathers if I don't seem ready to
54:57
Speaker 3: marry Lucinda. And you know I have ever told you
55:01
Speaker 3: you might make use my secret resolution never to marry
55:04
Speaker 3: her for your own service as you please. But I
55:08
Speaker 3: am now driven to the extremity of immediately refusing or
55:11
Speaker 3: complying unless you help me to escape the match.
55:15
Speaker 4: Escape Sir, neither her merit or her fortune are below
55:20
Speaker 4: your acceptance. Escaping do you call it?
55:24
Speaker 3: Dear sir? Do you wish I should desire the match?
55:28
Speaker 4: No? But such is my humorous and sickly state of mind,
55:31
Speaker 4: since it has been able to relish nothing but Lescinda that,
55:35
Speaker 4: though I may owe my happiness to your aversion to
55:38
Speaker 4: this marriage, I can't bear to hear her spoken of
55:40
Speaker 4: with levity or unconcern.
55:43
Speaker 3: Pardon me, sir, I shall transgress that way no more.
55:47
Speaker 3: She has understanding, beauty, shape, complexion, wit.
55:52
Speaker 4: Nay, Dear Beviel, don't speak of her as if you
55:55
Speaker 4: loved her? Neither?
55:56
Speaker 3: Why then, to give you ease at once? Though I
55:59
Speaker 3: allow LOUSI to have good sense, wit, beauty, and virtue,
56:03
Speaker 3: I know another in whom these qualities appear to me
56:06
Speaker 3: more amiable than in her.
56:09
Speaker 4: There you spoke like a reasonable and good natured friend,
56:13
Speaker 4: when you acknowledge her merit and own your prepossession for another,
56:17
Speaker 4: and once you gratify my fondness and cure my jealousy.
56:21
Speaker 3: But all this while you take no notice. You have
56:23
Speaker 3: no apprehension of another man that has twice the fortune
56:27
Speaker 3: of either of us.
56:28
Speaker 4: Simburton hang him a formal philosophical pedantic Coxcomb for that sought.
56:34
Speaker 4: With all these crude notions of divers things under the
56:37
Speaker 4: direction of great vanity and very little judgment, shows his
56:41
Speaker 4: strongest bias and avarice, which is so predominant in him
56:44
Speaker 4: that he will examine the limbs of his mistress with
56:47
Speaker 4: the caution of a jockey, and pays no more compliment
56:50
Speaker 4: to her personal charms than if she were a mere
56:52
Speaker 4: breeding animal.
56:54
Speaker 3: Are you sure that is not affected? I have known
56:56
Speaker 3: some women soon are set on fire by that sort
56:59
Speaker 3: of negligence.
57:01
Speaker 4: No, no, hang him. The rogue has no art. It
57:04
Speaker 4: is pure simple insolence and stupidity.
57:07
Speaker 3: Yet with all this I don't take him for a fool.
57:11
Speaker 4: I own the man is not unnatural. He is a
57:14
Speaker 4: very quick sense, though very slow understanding. He says, indeed,
57:19
Speaker 4: many things that want only the circumstances of time and
57:22
Speaker 4: place to be very just and agreeable.
57:25
Speaker 3: Well, you may be sure of me if you can
57:27
Speaker 3: disappoint him. But my intelligence says the mother has actually
57:31
Speaker 3: sent for the convincer to draw articles for his marriage
57:35
Speaker 3: with Lucinda. So those for mine with her are by
57:38
Speaker 3: her father's orders, ready for signing. But it seems she
57:42
Speaker 3: has not thought fit to consult either him or his
57:45
Speaker 3: daughter in the matter.
57:47
Speaker 4: Shah, a poor troublesome woman. Neither Lucinda nor her father
57:51
Speaker 4: will ever be brought to comply with it. Besides, I
57:55
Speaker 4: am sure Simberton can make no settlement upon her without
57:58
Speaker 4: the concurrence of his great uncle, Sir Jeoffrey in the West.
58:02
Speaker 3: Well, Sir, and I can tell you that's the very
58:05
Speaker 3: point that is now laid before her council, to know
58:08
Speaker 3: whether a firm settlement can be made without his uncle's
58:12
Speaker 3: actual joining in it. Now, pray consider, sir, when my
58:16
Speaker 3: affair with Lucinda comes, as it soon must, to an
58:20
Speaker 3: open rupture, how are you sure that Symbaton's fortune may
58:24
Speaker 3: not then tempt her father too to hear his proposals?
58:28
Speaker 4: There you are right, indeed, that must be provided against.
58:32
Speaker 4: Do you know who are her counsel?
58:34
Speaker 3: Yes, for your service, I have found out that too.
58:38
Speaker 3: They are Sergeant Bramble and Old Target. By the way,
58:43
Speaker 3: they are neither of them known in the family. Now
58:45
Speaker 3: I was thinking why you might not put a couple
58:48
Speaker 3: of false counsel upon her to delay and confound matters
58:51
Speaker 3: a little? Besides, it may probably let you into the
58:55
Speaker 3: bottom of her whole design against you as how, pray,
58:59
Speaker 3: why can't you slip on a black wig and a
59:02
Speaker 3: gown and be old bramble yourself?
59:05
Speaker 4: Huh. I don't dislike it, But what shall I do
59:08
Speaker 4: for a brother in the case.
59:10
Speaker 3: What think you of my fellow Tom? The rogue's intelligent
59:14
Speaker 3: and is a good mimic. All his part will be
59:17
Speaker 3: but to stutter heartily, for that's old target's case. Nay,
59:21
Speaker 3: it would be an immorl thing to mock him, were
59:23
Speaker 3: it not that his impertinence is the occasion of its
59:26
Speaker 3: breaking out. To that degree, the conduct of the scene
59:30
Speaker 3: will chiefly lie upon you.
59:32
Speaker 4: I like it of all things. If you'll send Tom
59:35
Speaker 4: to my chambers, I will give him full instructions. This
59:38
Speaker 4: will certainly give me occasion to raise difficulties, to puzzle
59:41
Speaker 4: or confound her project for a while at least.
59:44
Speaker 3: Oh warrant you success. So far we are right then,
59:48
Speaker 3: and now, Charles, your apprehension of my marrying her is
59:52
Speaker 3: all you have to get over.
59:54
Speaker 15: Dear Bevel, though I know you are my friend, Yet
59:57
Speaker 15: when I abstract myself from my own interest in I
1:00:00
Speaker 15: know no objection she can make to you or you
1:00:03
Speaker 15: to her.
1:00:04
Speaker 4: And therefore hope.
1:00:06
Speaker 3: Dear myrtle, I'm as much obliged to you for the
1:00:09
Speaker 3: cause of your suspicion as I am offended at the effect.
1:00:12
Speaker 3: But be assured I am taking measures for your certain security,
1:00:17
Speaker 3: and that all things with regard to me will end
1:00:19
Speaker 3: in your entire satisfaction.
1:00:23
Speaker 4: Well, I'll promise you to be as easy and as
1:00:25
Speaker 4: confident as I can, though I cannot but remember that
1:00:29
Speaker 4: I have more than life at stake on your fidelity.
1:00:32
Speaker 3: Going then depend upon it. You have no chance against.
1:00:36
Speaker 4: You, Nay, no ceremony. You know I must be going.
1:00:41
Speaker 1: Exit, myrtle.
1:00:42
Speaker 3: Well, this is another instance of the perplexities which arise
1:00:47
Speaker 3: to in faithful friendship. We must often in this life
1:00:51
Speaker 3: go on in our good offices, even under the displeasure
1:00:54
Speaker 3: of those to whom we do them in compassion to
1:00:57
Speaker 3: their weaknesses and mistakes. But all this while poor Indiana
1:01:02
Speaker 3: is tortured with the doubt of me. She has no
1:01:05
Speaker 3: support or comfort but in my fidelity. Yet she sees
1:01:09
Speaker 3: me daily pressed to marriage with another. How painful in
1:01:13
Speaker 3: such a crisis must be every hour she thinks on me.
1:01:17
Speaker 3: I'll let her see at least my conduct to her
1:01:20
Speaker 3: he is not changed. I'll take this opportunity to visit her.
1:01:24
Speaker 3: For though the religious vow I have made to my
1:01:27
Speaker 3: father restrains me from ever marrying without his approbation, yet
1:01:31
Speaker 3: that confines me not from seeing a virtuous woman. That
1:01:35
Speaker 3: is the pure delight my eyes and the guiltless joy
1:01:41
Speaker 3: of my heart. But the best condition of human life
1:01:45
Speaker 3: is but a gentler misery. To hope for perfect happiness
1:01:50
Speaker 3: is vain, and love has ever its allays of pain.
1:01:56
Speaker 1: Exit seemed to in Indiana's lodgings, and Isabella and Indiana.
1:02:05
Speaker 10: Yes, I say to his artifice, dear child, I say
1:02:10
Speaker 10: to thee again and again tis all skill and management?
1:02:14
Speaker 11: Will you persuade me there can be an ill design
1:02:17
Speaker 11: in supporting me in the condition of a woman of quality, attended,
1:02:21
Speaker 11: dressed and lodged like one, in my appearance abroad, and
1:02:25
Speaker 11: my furniture at home, every way in the most sumptuous manner.
1:02:29
Speaker 11: And he that does it has an artifice a design
1:02:32
Speaker 11: in it. Yes, yes, and all this without so much
1:02:37
Speaker 11: as explaining to me that all about me comes from him.
1:02:40
Speaker 10: Ay Ay, the more for that that keeps the title
1:02:44
Speaker 10: to all you have, the more in him.
1:02:47
Speaker 11: The more in him he scorns the thought.
1:02:50
Speaker 10: Then he he.
1:02:53
Speaker 11: He well be not so eager if he's an ill man.
1:02:58
Speaker 11: Let us look into history, jims. Here is another of
1:03:02
Speaker 11: them showing a letter. Here's two hundred and fifty pounds
1:03:06
Speaker 11: in bank notes with these words to pay for the
1:03:10
Speaker 11: set of dressing plate, which will be brought home to morrow. Why,
1:03:14
Speaker 11: dear aunt, now here's another piece of skill for you,
1:03:18
Speaker 11: which I own. I cannot comprehend. And it is with
1:03:21
Speaker 11: a bleeding heart I hear you say anything to the
1:03:24
Speaker 11: disadvantage of mister Beville. When he is present, I look
1:03:28
Speaker 11: upon him as one to whom I owe my life
1:03:31
Speaker 11: and the support of it. Then again as the man
1:03:34
Speaker 11: who loves me with sincerity and honor. When his eyes
1:03:38
Speaker 11: are cast another way and I dare survey him, my
1:03:41
Speaker 11: heart is painfully divided between shame and love. Oh, could
1:03:45
Speaker 11: I tell you.
1:03:47
Speaker 10: Ah, you need not I imagine all this for you.
1:03:52
Speaker 11: This is my state of mind in his presence, and
1:03:55
Speaker 11: when he is absent, you are ever dinning my years
1:03:58
Speaker 11: with notions of the arts of men, that his hidden bounty,
1:04:02
Speaker 11: his respectful conduct, his careful provision for me, after his
1:04:06
Speaker 11: preserving me from utmost misery, or certain signs he means
1:04:10
Speaker 11: nothing but to make I know not what of me.
1:04:13
Speaker 10: Oh, you have a sweet opinion of him.
1:04:17
Speaker 11: Truly I have when I am with him. Ten thousand
1:04:21
Speaker 11: things besides my sex is natural distance in shame to
1:04:25
Speaker 11: suppress my heart that yearns to think, to praise, to
1:04:29
Speaker 11: say it loves him. I say, thus it is with
1:04:33
Speaker 11: me while I see him, and in his absence I
1:04:36
Speaker 11: am entertained with nothing but your endeavors to tear this
1:04:39
Speaker 11: amiable image from my heart, and in its stead to
1:04:43
Speaker 11: place a base dissembler, an artful invader of my happiness,
1:04:47
Speaker 11: my innocence, my honor.
1:04:50
Speaker 10: Ah, poor soul, has not his plot taken? Don't you
1:04:55
Speaker 10: die for him? Has not the way he has taken
1:04:58
Speaker 10: been the most.
1:04:59
Speaker 7: Proper with you?
1:05:01
Speaker 8: Oh?
1:05:01
Speaker 10: Oh, he has sense and has judged the thing right.
1:05:06
Speaker 11: Go on, then, since nothing can answer you, say what
1:05:10
Speaker 11: your will of him? Hey ho, hey ho.
1:05:13
Speaker 10: Indeed, it is better to say so as you are
1:05:17
Speaker 10: now than as many others are. There are among the
1:05:21
Speaker 10: destroyers of women, the gentle, the generous, the mild, the affable,
1:05:27
Speaker 10: the humble, who all, soon after their success in their designs,
1:05:32
Speaker 10: turned to the contrary. Of those characters. I will own
1:05:36
Speaker 10: to you mister Bevil carries his hypocrisy the best of
1:05:39
Speaker 10: any man living. But still he is a man and
1:05:43
Speaker 10: therefore a hypocrite. They have usurped an exemption from shame
1:05:48
Speaker 10: for any baseness, any cruelty towards us. They embrace without love,
1:05:54
Speaker 10: They make vows without conscience of obligation. They are partners,
1:05:59
Speaker 10: nay see uceus to the crime, wherein they pretend to
1:06:03
Speaker 10: be less.
1:06:04
Speaker 1: Guilty Indiana aside.
1:06:08
Speaker 11: That's truly observed. But what's all this? To Beville?
1:06:13
Speaker 10: This it is to Bevil and all mankind trust not
1:06:17
Speaker 10: those who will think the worse of you for your
1:06:20
Speaker 10: confidence in them, serpents who lie in wait for doves.
1:06:24
Speaker 10: Won't you be on your guard against those who would
1:06:26
Speaker 10: betray you? Won't you doubt those who would contend you
1:06:30
Speaker 10: for believing em? Take it from me, fair and natural
1:06:34
Speaker 10: dealing is to invite injuries, tis bleating to escape wolves
1:06:38
Speaker 10: who would devour you. Such is the world aside, and
1:06:44
Speaker 10: such since the behavior of one man to myself have
1:06:48
Speaker 10: I believed all the rest of the sex.
1:06:52
Speaker 11: I will not doubt the truth of Beville. I will
1:06:55
Speaker 11: not doubt it. He has not spoke of it by
1:06:58
Speaker 11: an organ, that is given to lying. His eyes are
1:07:01
Speaker 11: all that have ever told me that he was mine.
1:07:04
Speaker 11: I know his virtue, I know his filial piety, and
1:07:08
Speaker 11: ought to trust his management with the father to whom
1:07:11
Speaker 11: he has uncommon obligations. What have I to be concerned? For?
1:07:15
Speaker 11: My lesson is very short if he takes me forever.
1:07:19
Speaker 11: My purpose of life is only to please him. If
1:07:22
Speaker 11: he leaves me, which heaven avert, I know he'll do
1:07:26
Speaker 11: it nobly, and I shall have nothing to do but
1:07:29
Speaker 11: to learn to die after worse than death has happened
1:07:33
Speaker 11: to me.
1:07:34
Speaker 10: I do persist in your credulity, flatter yourself that a
1:07:39
Speaker 10: man of his figure and fortune will make himself the
1:07:42
Speaker 10: jest of the town and marry a handsome beggar for
1:07:45
Speaker 10: love the town.
1:07:48
Speaker 11: I must tell him, Madam, the fools that laugh at
1:07:51
Speaker 11: mister Beville will but make themselves more ridiculous. His actions
1:07:55
Speaker 11: are the results of thinking, and he has sense enough
1:07:58
Speaker 11: to make even virtue fushable.
1:08:01
Speaker 10: Oh my conscience, he has turned her head. Come. Come,
1:08:06
Speaker 10: if he were the honest fool you take him for,
1:08:08
Speaker 10: why has he kept you here these three weeks without
1:08:12
Speaker 10: sending you to Bristol in search of your father? Your
1:08:15
Speaker 10: family and your relations.
1:08:18
Speaker 11: I am convinced he still designs it, and that nothing
1:08:22
Speaker 11: keeps him here but the necessity of not coming to
1:08:25
Speaker 11: an open breach with his father in regard to the
1:08:28
Speaker 11: match he has proposed him. Besides, has he not wit
1:08:32
Speaker 11: to Bristol? And has not he advised that my father
1:08:36
Speaker 11: has not been heard of there almost this twenty years.
1:08:40
Speaker 10: All sham mere evasion. He is afraid if he should
1:08:45
Speaker 10: carry you thither, your honest relations may take you out
1:08:48
Speaker 10: of his hands, and so blow up all his wicked
1:08:51
Speaker 10: hopes at once wicked hopes.
1:08:55
Speaker 11: Did I ever give him any search?
1:08:57
Speaker 10: Has he ever given you any honest one? Can you
1:09:01
Speaker 10: say in your conscience he has ever once offered to
1:09:04
Speaker 10: marry you?
1:09:06
Speaker 11: No? But by his behavior I am convinced he will
1:09:09
Speaker 11: offer it the moment it is in his power or
1:09:12
Speaker 11: consistent with his honor to make such a promise good
1:09:15
Speaker 11: to me his honor, I will rely upon it. Therefore, desire,
1:09:21
Speaker 11: you will not make my life uneasy by these ungrateful
1:09:24
Speaker 11: jealousies of one to whom I am and wish to
1:09:27
Speaker 11: be obliged for from his integrity alone, I have resolved
1:09:32
Speaker 11: to hope for happiness.
1:09:34
Speaker 10: Nay, I have done my duty. If you won't see
1:09:38
Speaker 10: at your peril be.
1:09:39
Speaker 11: It, let it be. This is his hour of visiting me.
1:09:44
Speaker 10: No to be sure, keep up your form. Don't see
1:09:48
Speaker 10: him in a bedchamber a part. This is pure prudence.
1:09:53
Speaker 10: When she is liable wherever he meets her, to be
1:09:56
Speaker 10: conveyed where'er he pleases.
1:10:00
Speaker 11: All the rest of my life is but waiting till
1:10:02
Speaker 11: he comes. I live only when I'm with him.
1:10:06
Speaker 10: Exit, Well go thy ways, thou wilful, innocent aside. I
1:10:12
Speaker 10: once had almost as much love for a man who
1:10:15
Speaker 10: poorly left me to marry Ana State. And I am now,
1:10:19
Speaker 10: against my will, what they call an old maid. But
1:10:23
Speaker 10: I will not let the peevishness of that condition grow
1:10:26
Speaker 10: upon me. Only keep up the suspicion of it, to
1:10:29
Speaker 10: prevent this creature's being any other than a virgin, except
1:10:33
Speaker 10: upon proper terms.
1:10:35
Speaker 1: Exit, re enter Indiana. Speaking to a servant.
1:10:42
Speaker 11: Desire mister Bell to walk in design impossible. A base
1:10:47
Speaker 11: designing mind could never think of what he hourly puts
1:10:50
Speaker 11: in practice. And yet since the late rumor of his marriage,
1:10:54
Speaker 11: he seems more reserved than formerly. He sends in two
1:10:58
Speaker 11: before he sees me to know if I am at leisure,
1:11:01
Speaker 11: such new respects may cover coldness in the heart. It
1:11:05
Speaker 11: certainly makes me thoughtful. I'll know the worst at once.
1:11:09
Speaker 11: I'll lay such fair occasions in his way that it
1:11:12
Speaker 11: shall be impossible to avoid an explanation, for these doubts
1:11:16
Speaker 11: are insupportable. But see he comes and clears them all.
1:11:21
Speaker 3: And to bevil, madam, you're most obedient. I'm afraid I
1:11:26
Speaker 3: broke in upon your rest last night. Twas very late
1:11:29
Speaker 3: before we parted, but twas your own fault. I never
1:11:32
Speaker 3: saw you in such agreeable humor.
1:11:35
Speaker 11: I am extremely glad we were both pleased, for I
1:11:38
Speaker 11: thought I never saw you better company me.
1:11:41
Speaker 3: Madam, you rally. I said very little, but.
1:11:45
Speaker 11: I am afraid you heard me say a great deal.
1:11:48
Speaker 11: And when a woman is in the talking vein, the
1:11:50
Speaker 11: most agreeable thing a man can do, you know, is
1:11:53
Speaker 11: to have patience to hear her.
1:11:55
Speaker 3: Then it's pity, madam, you should ever be silent, that
1:11:58
Speaker 3: we might be always agreeable to one another.
1:12:02
Speaker 11: If I had your talent or power to make my
1:12:04
Speaker 11: actions speak for me, I might indeed be silent, and
1:12:08
Speaker 11: you can pretend to something more than the agreeable.
1:12:11
Speaker 3: If I might be vain of anything in my power, Madam,
1:12:14
Speaker 3: tis that my understanding from all your sex has marked
1:12:18
Speaker 3: you out as the most deserving object of my steam.
1:12:22
Speaker 11: Should I think I deserve this? Twere enough to make
1:12:25
Speaker 11: my vanity forfeit the very steam you offer me? How so, madam,
1:12:30
Speaker 11: because the steam is the result of reason, and to
1:12:33
Speaker 11: deserve it from good sense, the height of human glory. Nay,
1:12:37
Speaker 11: I had rather a man of honor should pay me
1:12:40
Speaker 11: that than all the homage of a sincere and humble.
1:12:43
Speaker 3: Love you certainly distinguish, right, madam. Love often kindles from
1:12:49
Speaker 3: external merit only.
1:12:51
Speaker 11: But a stem rises from a higher source, the merit
1:12:54
Speaker 11: of the soul.
1:12:56
Speaker 3: True and great souls only can deserve it respectfully.
1:13:01
Speaker 11: Now I think they are greater still that can so
1:13:04
Speaker 11: charitably part with it?
1:13:07
Speaker 3: Now, madam, you make me vain, since the utmost pride
1:13:10
Speaker 3: and pleasure of my life is that I esteem you
1:13:13
Speaker 3: as I ought Indiana aside as he.
1:13:18
Speaker 11: Owed still more perplexing, he neither saves nor kills my hope.
1:13:24
Speaker 3: But Madam, we grow grave, methinks, Let's find some other subject. Pray,
1:13:29
Speaker 3: how did you like the opera last night?
1:13:32
Speaker 8: First?
1:13:32
Speaker 11: Give me leave to thank you for my digits.
1:13:35
Speaker 3: Oh your servant, madam. But pray tell me you now,
1:13:39
Speaker 3: who are never partial to the fashion? I fancy you
1:13:42
Speaker 3: must be the properest judge of a mighty dispute among
1:13:45
Speaker 3: the ladies, that is, whether Crispo or Griselda is the
1:13:49
Speaker 3: more agreeable entertainment with submission.
1:13:53
Speaker 11: Now, I cannot be a proper judge of this.
1:13:55
Speaker 3: Question, how so, madam, because I.
1:13:58
Speaker 11: Find I have a partiality for one of them.
1:14:01
Speaker 3: Pray, which is that I.
1:14:03
Speaker 11: Do not know. There's something in that rural cottage of Griselda,
1:14:07
Speaker 11: her forlorn condition, her poverty, her solitude, her resignation, her
1:14:13
Speaker 11: innocent slumbers, and that lalling doul to Sonya that sung
1:14:17
Speaker 11: over her. It had an effect upon me that, in short,
1:14:21
Speaker 11: I never was so well deceived at any of them.
1:14:24
Speaker 3: Oh, now, then I can account for the dispute Griselda,
1:14:28
Speaker 3: it seems, is the distress of an injured, innocent woman Crispo,
1:14:33
Speaker 3: that only of a man in the same condition. Therefore,
1:14:36
Speaker 3: the men are mostly concerned for Crispo, and by natural
1:14:39
Speaker 3: indulgence both sexes for Griselda.
1:14:43
Speaker 11: So that judgment you think owe to be for one,
1:14:46
Speaker 11: though fancy and complaisance have got ground for the other. Well,
1:14:51
Speaker 11: I believe you will never give me leave to dispute
1:14:53
Speaker 11: with you on any subject, For I own Crispo has
1:14:56
Speaker 11: its charms for me too. Though in the main all
1:15:00
Speaker 11: the pleasure the best opera gives us is but mere sensation.
1:15:04
Speaker 11: Methinks it's beeedy. The mind can't have a little more
1:15:07
Speaker 11: share in the entertainment. The music's certainly fine, But in
1:15:11
Speaker 11: my thoughts there's none of your composers come up to
1:15:14
Speaker 11: all Shakespeare and out.
1:15:15
Speaker 3: Way, How madam, Why if a woman of your sense
1:15:19
Speaker 3: were to say this in a drawing room and to
1:15:22
Speaker 3: a servant.
1:15:24
Speaker 12: Sir, he's in your Carbinelli says, he waits your commands
1:15:27
Speaker 12: in the next room.
1:15:29
Speaker 3: Apropos you were saying yesterday, madam, you had a mind
1:15:32
Speaker 3: to hear him. Will you give him leave to entertain you?
1:15:35
Speaker 2: Now?
1:15:36
Speaker 11: By all means, desire the gentleman to walk in.
1:15:40
Speaker 1: Exit, servant.
1:15:42
Speaker 3: I fancy you'll find something in this hand that is uncommon.
1:15:47
Speaker 11: You're always finding ways, mister Bevil, to make life seem less.
1:15:50
Speaker 1: Tidious to me and to music master.
1:15:54
Speaker 11: When the gentleman pleases.
1:15:57
Speaker 1: After a sonata is played, Bevil, wait, it's from the
1:16:00
Speaker 1: master to the door, et cetera.
1:16:03
Speaker 3: You smile, madam, to see me so complaisant to one
1:16:06
Speaker 3: whom I pay for his visit. Now, I own I
1:16:09
Speaker 3: think it is not enough barely to pay those whose
1:16:12
Speaker 3: talents are superior to our own. I mean such talents
1:16:16
Speaker 3: as would become our condition if we had them. Methinks
1:16:20
Speaker 3: we ought to do something more than barely gratify them
1:16:23
Speaker 3: for what they do at our command, only because their
1:16:26
Speaker 3: fortune is below us.
1:16:28
Speaker 11: You say, I smile. I assure you it was a
1:16:31
Speaker 11: smile of approbation. For indeed, I cannot but think it
1:16:35
Speaker 11: the distinguishing part of a gentleman to make his superiority
1:16:38
Speaker 11: of fortune as easy to his inferiors as he can.
1:16:42
Speaker 11: Aside now once more to try him, I was saying,
1:16:47
Speaker 11: just now, I believed you would never let me dispute
1:16:50
Speaker 11: with you, and I dare say it will always be so. However,
1:16:55
Speaker 11: I must have your opinion upon a subject which created
1:16:58
Speaker 11: a debate between my aunt and me just before you
1:17:01
Speaker 11: came hither. She would needs have it that no man
1:17:04
Speaker 11: ever does an extraordinary kindness or service for a woman
1:17:08
Speaker 11: but for his own sake.
1:17:10
Speaker 3: Well, madam, indeed, I can't but be of her mind.
1:17:15
Speaker 11: What though he should maintain and support her without demanding
1:17:18
Speaker 11: anything of her on her part?
1:17:20
Speaker 3: Why madam, is making an expense in the service of
1:17:24
Speaker 3: a valuable woman? For such I must suppose her, though
1:17:28
Speaker 3: she should never do him any favor, Nay, though she
1:17:31
Speaker 3: should never know who did her such service, such a
1:17:34
Speaker 3: mighty heroic business.
1:17:37
Speaker 11: Certainly I should think he must be a man of
1:17:39
Speaker 11: an uncommon mold.
1:17:41
Speaker 3: Dear Madam, Why so tis but at best a better
1:17:45
Speaker 3: taste in expense to bestow upon one whom he may
1:17:49
Speaker 3: think one of the ornaments of the whole creation, to
1:17:52
Speaker 3: be conscious that from his superfluity, an innocent, a virtuous
1:17:57
Speaker 3: spirit is supported above the temptation and sorrows of life,
1:18:02
Speaker 3: that he sees satisfaction, health, and gladness in her countenance,
1:18:06
Speaker 3: while he enjoys the happiness of seeing her as that
1:18:09
Speaker 3: I will suppose to.
1:18:11
Speaker 7: Or he must be.
1:18:12
Speaker 3: Too abstracted to insensible, I say, if he is allowed
1:18:16
Speaker 3: to delight in that prospect alas, what mighty matter is
1:18:20
Speaker 3: there in all this?
1:18:22
Speaker 11: No mighty martyr in so does interested a friendship disinterested?
1:18:27
Speaker 3: I can't think him so, Your hero, Madam, is no
1:18:30
Speaker 3: more than what every gentleman ought to be, and I
1:18:33
Speaker 3: believe very many are. He is only one who takes
1:18:37
Speaker 3: more delight in reflections than in sensations. He is more
1:18:41
Speaker 3: pleased with thinking than eating. That's the utmost you can
1:18:45
Speaker 3: say of him. Why, Madam, a greater expense than all
1:18:48
Speaker 3: this men lay out upon an unnecessary stable of horses?
1:18:53
Speaker 11: Can you be sincere in what you say?
1:18:55
Speaker 3: You may depend upon it if you know any such man.
1:18:59
Speaker 3: He does not love dogs inordinately.
1:19:02
Speaker 16: Know that he does not nor carts, nor dice, no,
1:19:07
Speaker 16: nor bottle companions, no, nor loose wimen.
1:19:12
Speaker 11: No, I'm sure he does not.
1:19:14
Speaker 3: Take my word. Then, if your admired hero is not
1:19:17
Speaker 3: liable to any of these kinds of demands, there's no
1:19:21
Speaker 3: such pre eminence in this as you imagine. Nay, this
1:19:24
Speaker 3: way of expense you speak of is what exalts and
1:19:28
Speaker 3: raises him that has a taste for it. And at
1:19:31
Speaker 3: the same time his delight is incapable of satiety, disgust,
1:19:36
Speaker 3: or penitence.
1:19:38
Speaker 11: But still I insist his having no private interest in
1:19:41
Speaker 11: the action makes it prodigious, almost incredible.
1:19:45
Speaker 3: Dear madam, I never know you more mistaken. Why who
1:19:49
Speaker 3: can be more a usurer? Than he who lays out
1:19:52
Speaker 3: his money in such valuable purchases. If pleasure be worth purchasing,
1:19:57
Speaker 3: how great a pleasure is it to him who has
1:20:00
Speaker 3: a true taste of life to ease an aching heart,
1:20:03
Speaker 3: to see the human countenance lighted up into smiles of
1:20:07
Speaker 3: joy on the receipt of a bit of awe, which
1:20:10
Speaker 3: is superfluous and otherwise useless in a man's own pocket.
1:20:15
Speaker 3: What could a man do better with his cash? This
1:20:18
Speaker 3: is the effect of a human disposition, where there is
1:20:21
Speaker 3: only a general tie of nature and common necessity. What then,
1:20:25
Speaker 3: must it be when we serve an object of merit
1:20:28
Speaker 3: of admiration?
1:20:30
Speaker 11: Well, the more you argue against it, the more I
1:20:33
Speaker 11: shall admire the generosity.
1:20:35
Speaker 3: Nay, nay, then, Madam, tis time to fly. After a
1:20:40
Speaker 3: declaration that my opinion strengthens my adversary's argument, I had
1:20:45
Speaker 3: best hasten to my appointment with mister Myrtle, and begone,
1:20:48
Speaker 3: while we are friends, and before things are brought to an.
1:20:51
Speaker 1: Extremity, Exit carelessly, enter Isabella.
1:20:58
Speaker 10: Well, madam, what think you of him?
1:21:01
Speaker 7: Now?
1:21:01
Speaker 10: Pray?
1:21:02
Speaker 11: I protest? I begin to fear he is wholly disinterested
1:21:06
Speaker 11: in what he does for me on my heart. He
1:21:08
Speaker 11: has no other view but the mere pleasure of doing it,
1:21:12
Speaker 11: and has neither good or bad designs upon me.
1:21:16
Speaker 10: Ah, dear niece, don't be in fear of both. I'll
1:21:20
Speaker 10: warrant you you will know time enough that he is
1:21:24
Speaker 10: not indifferent.
1:21:25
Speaker 11: You please me when you tell me so, For if
1:21:29
Speaker 11: he has any wishes towards me, I know he will
1:21:32
Speaker 11: not pursue them, but with honor.
1:21:34
Speaker 10: I wish I were as confident of one as t'other.
1:21:37
Speaker 10: I saw the respectful downcast of his eye when you
1:21:41
Speaker 10: caught him gazing at you during the music. He, I warrant,
1:21:45
Speaker 10: was surprised, as if he had been taken stealing your watch. Oh,
1:21:51
Speaker 10: the undissembled guilty look.
1:21:54
Speaker 11: But did you observe any such thing? Really? I thought
1:21:57
Speaker 11: she looked most charmingly graceful. How engaging is modesty in
1:22:01
Speaker 11: a man when one knows there is a great mind within,
1:22:05
Speaker 11: so tender a confusion, and yet in other respects so
1:22:09
Speaker 11: much himself, so collected, so dauntless, so determined.
1:22:15
Speaker 10: Ah niece. There is a sort of bashfulness which is
1:22:18
Speaker 10: the best engine to carry on a shameless purpose. Some
1:22:22
Speaker 10: men's modesty serves their wickedness, as hypocrisy gains the respect
1:22:27
Speaker 10: due to piety. But I will own to you there
1:22:30
Speaker 10: is one hopeful symptom, if there could be such a
1:22:33
Speaker 10: thing as a disinterested lover. But it's all a perplexity.
1:22:38
Speaker 10: Till till till till what till I know whether mister
1:22:44
Speaker 10: Myrtle and mister Bevel are really friends or foes, And
1:22:48
Speaker 10: that I will be convinced of before I sleep. For
1:22:52
Speaker 10: you shall not be deceived.
1:22:54
Speaker 11: I'm sure I never shall. If your fears can guard me.
1:22:58
Speaker 11: In the meantime, I'll wrap myself up in the integrity
1:23:01
Speaker 11: of my own heart, nor dare to doubt if his
1:23:05
Speaker 11: as conscious honor all his actions stirs so conscious innocence
1:23:10
Speaker 11: dispels my fears.
1:23:12
Speaker 1: Excellent end of fact two Act the third scene, Celan's house,
1:23:22
Speaker 1: Enter tom meeting Phyllis.
1:23:25
Speaker 7: Well, Phyllis, what with the faces if you've never seen
1:23:28
Speaker 7: me before?
1:23:30
Speaker 1: Aside, what a work of art to do?
1:23:32
Speaker 12: Now?
1:23:33
Speaker 7: She has seen some new visiting at the house whose
1:23:35
Speaker 7: heir she has caught, is resolved to practice them upon me.
1:23:39
Speaker 7: Numberless or the changes shall dance through before she'll answer
1:23:42
Speaker 7: this plain question be deleted. It have you delivered my
1:23:45
Speaker 7: master's out of your lady. Nay, I know too well
1:23:48
Speaker 7: to ask an account of it in an ordinary way.
1:23:50
Speaker 7: I'll be in my heirs as well as she well, Madam,
1:23:54
Speaker 7: as unhappy as you are at present, please to make me.
1:23:57
Speaker 7: I would not, in the general be any other than
1:23:59
Speaker 7: what I am. I would not be a bit wiser,
1:24:02
Speaker 7: a bit rich, a bit taller, bit shorter than I
1:24:04
Speaker 7: am at.
1:24:04
Speaker 1: This instant, looking steadfastly at her, did.
1:24:08
Speaker 13: Ever anybody doubt, Master Thomas, but that you were extremely
1:24:12
Speaker 13: satisfied with your sweet self?
1:24:14
Speaker 7: I am Indeed. The thing I have least reason to
1:24:17
Speaker 7: be satisfied with is my fortune, and I am glad
1:24:20
Speaker 7: of my poverty. Perhaps if I were rich, I should
1:24:23
Speaker 7: overlook the finest woman in the world that wants nothing
1:24:26
Speaker 7: but riches to be thought so phyllis aside, how.
1:24:30
Speaker 13: Prettily that was said. But I have a great deal
1:24:33
Speaker 13: more before I say one word.
1:24:36
Speaker 7: Or perhaps have been stupidly above her had I not
1:24:38
Speaker 7: been a equal. By not being a equal, never had
1:24:41
Speaker 7: opportunity of being a slave. I am my master's servant
1:24:45
Speaker 7: for hire, I am my mistress's from choice. Would she
1:24:48
Speaker 7: but approve my passion?
1:24:50
Speaker 13: I think it's the first time I ever heard you
1:24:52
Speaker 13: speak with any sense of anguish if you really do
1:24:55
Speaker 13: suffer any.
1:24:56
Speaker 7: Ah phyllis, can you doubt after what you have seen?
1:25:00
Speaker 13: I know not what I have seen nor what I
1:25:02
Speaker 13: have heard. But since I am at leisure, you may
1:25:04
Speaker 13: tell me when you fell in love with me, how
1:25:07
Speaker 13: you fell in love with me, and what you have
1:25:09
Speaker 13: suffered or are ready to suffer for me tom aside.
1:25:14
Speaker 7: The unmerciful jade. And I am in haste about my
1:25:17
Speaker 7: Master's letter, but I must go through it. Ah so well.
1:25:22
Speaker 7: I remember when and how, and on what occasion I
1:25:25
Speaker 7: was first surprised. It was on the first of April
1:25:28
Speaker 7: seventeen fifteen. I came into Master Seilian service. I was
1:25:31
Speaker 7: then a hobbled away and you a pretty little tight girl,
1:25:35
Speaker 7: a favorite handmaid of the housekeeper. At that time, we
1:25:38
Speaker 7: neither us knew what was in us. I remember I
1:25:41
Speaker 7: was ordered to get out of the window one pair
1:25:43
Speaker 7: of stairs to rub the sashes clean. The person employed
1:25:46
Speaker 7: on the inner side was your charming self, whom I
1:25:48
Speaker 7: had never seen before.
1:25:50
Speaker 13: Ha ha, I think I remember the silly accident. What made
1:25:55
Speaker 13: you you off ready to fall down into the street.
1:25:59
Speaker 7: You know not I warned you you couldnot guess what
1:26:01
Speaker 7: surprised me. You took no delight when you immediately grew
1:26:04
Speaker 7: want in your conquest, and put your lips close and
1:26:07
Speaker 7: breathed upon the glass. And when my lips approached a
1:26:10
Speaker 7: dirty cloth, he rubbed against my face and hid your
1:26:13
Speaker 7: beauteous form. When I again drew near, you spit and
1:26:16
Speaker 7: rubbed and smiled at my undoing.
1:26:19
Speaker 13: What silly thoughts you men have?
1:26:22
Speaker 7: We were pyramids, and thisby but ten times harder was
1:26:25
Speaker 7: my fate. Pyramists could peep only through a wall. I
1:26:29
Speaker 7: saw her, saw my thisbian, all her beauty, but as
1:26:32
Speaker 7: much kept from her as if a hundred wall was between.
1:26:35
Speaker 7: For there was more, there was her will against me.
1:26:39
Speaker 7: Would she but yet relent? Oh Phyllis, Oh Phyllis, shortened
1:26:43
Speaker 7: my torments, and the clear you pity me.
1:26:46
Speaker 13: I believe it's very sufferable. The pain is not so exquisite,
1:26:50
Speaker 13: but that you may bear it a little longer.
1:26:52
Speaker 7: Oh, my charming Phyllis. If all depended on my fair ones,
1:26:55
Speaker 7: well I could with glory suffer. But dearest creature, consider
1:26:59
Speaker 7: I'm miserable.
1:27:00
Speaker 13: State, how miserable we.
1:27:03
Speaker 7: Are miserable to be in love and are in the
1:27:05
Speaker 7: command of others than those we love, that generous passion
1:27:09
Speaker 7: in the heart to be sent to and fro on errands,
1:27:11
Speaker 7: cold checked and rated for the meanest trifles. Oh, Phyllis,
1:27:17
Speaker 7: you don't know how many china cups and glasses my
1:27:19
Speaker 7: passion for you has made me break. You have broke
1:27:22
Speaker 7: my fortune as well as my heart.
1:27:25
Speaker 13: Well, mister Thomas, I cannot but own to you that
1:27:28
Speaker 13: I believe your master rights, and you speak the best
1:27:31
Speaker 13: of any men in the world. Never was a woman
1:27:34
Speaker 13: so pleased with a letter as my young lady was
1:27:37
Speaker 13: with his. And this is the answer to it.
1:27:40
Speaker 1: Gives him a letter.
1:27:41
Speaker 7: This was well done, My dearest. Consider we must strike
1:27:45
Speaker 7: out some pretty livelihood of ourselves by closing their affairs.
1:27:49
Speaker 7: It will be nothing for them to give us a
1:27:51
Speaker 7: little being of our own, some small tenement out of
1:27:54
Speaker 7: their large possessions. Whatever they give us, it will be
1:27:57
Speaker 7: more than what they keep for themselves. One acre with
1:28:00
Speaker 7: Phyllis would be worth a whole county without her.
1:28:03
Speaker 13: Oh, could I but believe you?
1:28:06
Speaker 7: If not the utterance believe the touch of my.
1:28:09
Speaker 1: Lips kisses her.
1:28:12
Speaker 13: Ah, there's no contradicting you, how closely you argue Tom.
1:28:18
Speaker 7: And we'll closer and due time. But I must hasten
1:28:22
Speaker 7: this letter to hasten towards the possession of you. Then Phyllis,
1:28:26
Speaker 7: consider how I must be revenged. Look to it of
1:28:29
Speaker 7: all your skittishness, shy looks, and at best but coy compliances.
1:28:34
Speaker 13: Oh Tom, you grow want done and sensual, as my
1:28:38
Speaker 13: lady calls it, I must not endure it. Oh you
1:28:43
Speaker 13: are a man and odious, filthy male creature. You should
1:28:49
Speaker 13: behave if you had a right sense over a man
1:28:52
Speaker 13: of sense like mister Simburton, with distance and indifference, or
1:28:59
Speaker 13: let me see some other becoming hard word with seeming
1:29:04
Speaker 13: in in inadvertency, and not rush on one as if
1:29:11
Speaker 13: you were seizing a prey. But hush, the ladies are coming. Good, Tom,
1:29:17
Speaker 13: don't kiss me above once and be gone, lud. We
1:29:22
Speaker 13: have been fooling in toying and not considered the main
1:29:25
Speaker 13: business of our masters and mistresses.
1:29:28
Speaker 7: Why their business is to be fooling and toying. As
1:29:31
Speaker 7: soon as the parchments are ready.
1:29:33
Speaker 13: Well remembered parchments, my lady, to my knowledge, is preparing
1:29:39
Speaker 13: writings between her Coxcomb cousin Simberton and my mistress. Though
1:29:44
Speaker 13: my master has an eye to the parchments already prepared
1:29:48
Speaker 13: between your master, mister Bevell, and my mistress. And I
1:29:52
Speaker 13: believe my mistress herself has signed and sealed in her
1:29:56
Speaker 13: heart to mister myrtle. Did I not bid you to
1:30:00
Speaker 13: kiss me? But once in be gone? Ha ha? But I
1:30:03
Speaker 13: know you won't be satisfied.
1:30:05
Speaker 7: Now, you smith creature?
1:30:07
Speaker 1: How should I kissing her hand?
1:30:11
Speaker 13: Well, since you are so humble or so cool as
1:30:16
Speaker 13: to ravish my hand, only I'll take my leave of
1:30:20
Speaker 13: you like a great lady, and you a man of quality.
1:30:25
Speaker 1: I salute formerly pox of all this state offers to
1:30:30
Speaker 1: kiss her more closely.
1:30:32
Speaker 13: No, prithee, Tom, mind your business. We must follow that
1:30:36
Speaker 13: interest which will take, but endeavor at that which will
1:30:40
Speaker 13: be most for us, and we like most. Oh, here's
1:30:44
Speaker 13: my young mistress.
1:30:46
Speaker 1: Tom taps her neck behind and kisses his fingers.
1:30:50
Speaker 13: Go ye, licorice, fool.
1:30:53
Speaker 1: Exit Tom, And to Lucinda, who.
1:30:57
Speaker 12: Was that you were hurrying away?
1:30:59
Speaker 13: Oh? That I had no mind to bart with?
1:31:02
Speaker 12: Why did you turn him away?
1:31:03
Speaker 5: Then?
1:31:04
Speaker 13: For your ladyship's service? To carry your ladyship's letter to
1:31:07
Speaker 13: his master, I could hardly get the rogue away.
1:31:11
Speaker 12: Why has he so little love for his master?
1:31:14
Speaker 13: No, but he hath so much love for his mistress.
1:31:18
Speaker 12: But I thought I heard him kiss you. Why did
1:31:20
Speaker 12: you suffer that?
1:31:22
Speaker 11: Why?
1:31:22
Speaker 13: Madam, we vulgar take it to be a sign of love.
1:31:25
Speaker 13: We servants, we poor people that have nothing but our
1:31:29
Speaker 13: persons to bestow or treat for, are forced to deal
1:31:32
Speaker 13: and bargain by way of sample. And therefore, as we
1:31:36
Speaker 13: have no parchments or wax necessary in our agreements, we
1:31:40
Speaker 13: squeeze with our hands and seal with our lips to
1:31:44
Speaker 13: ratify vows and promises.
1:31:46
Speaker 12: But can't you trust one another without such earnest down?
1:31:49
Speaker 13: We don't think it safe any more than you, gentry,
1:31:52
Speaker 13: to come together without deeds executed.
1:31:55
Speaker 12: Thou art a pert Mary hussy, ha ha, I.
1:31:59
Speaker 13: Wish, madam, that your lover and you were as happy
1:32:02
Speaker 13: as Tom and your servant.
1:32:03
Speaker 12: Are you grow impertinent?
1:32:05
Speaker 13: I have done, madam, and I won't ask you what
1:32:08
Speaker 13: you intend to do with mister Myrtle, what your father
1:32:11
Speaker 13: will do with mister Bevell, nor what you all, especially
1:32:15
Speaker 13: my lady, mean by admitting mister Simberton as particularly here
1:32:20
Speaker 13: as if he were married to you already nay, you
1:32:23
Speaker 13: are married. Actually, as far as people of quality are,
1:32:28
Speaker 13: how is that you have different beds in the same house?
1:32:32
Speaker 8: Pshaw.
1:32:33
Speaker 12: I have a very great value for mister Bevell, but
1:32:35
Speaker 12: have absolutely put an end to his pretensions in the
1:32:38
Speaker 12: letter I gave you for him. But my father, in
1:32:41
Speaker 12: his heart still has a mind to him. Were it
1:32:43
Speaker 12: not for this woman they talk of, and I am
1:32:45
Speaker 12: apt to imagine he is married to her, or never
1:32:48
Speaker 12: designs to marry at all.
1:32:50
Speaker 13: Then, mister Myrtle, he had my.
1:32:53
Speaker 12: Parents leave to apply to me, and by that he
1:32:55
Speaker 12: has won me and my affections. Who is to have
1:32:58
Speaker 12: this body of mine without them? It seems as nothing
1:33:01
Speaker 12: to me. My mother says, tis indecent for me to
1:33:04
Speaker 12: let my thoughts stray about the person of my husband. Nay,
1:33:07
Speaker 12: she says, a maid, rigidly virtuous, though she may have
1:33:11
Speaker 12: been where her lover was a thousand times, should not
1:33:14
Speaker 12: have made observations enough to know him from another man
1:33:16
Speaker 12: when she sees him in a third place.
1:33:18
Speaker 13: That is more than the severity of a nun. For
1:33:21
Speaker 13: not to see when one may is hardly possible, and
1:33:25
Speaker 13: not to see when one count is very easy. At
1:33:29
Speaker 13: this rate, Madam, there are a great many who you
1:33:32
Speaker 13: have not seen, who.
1:33:33
Speaker 12: Mamma says, the first time you see your husband should
1:33:36
Speaker 12: be at the instant he has made. So when your father,
1:33:39
Speaker 12: with the help of the Minister, gives you to him,
1:33:41
Speaker 12: then you are to see him. Then you are to
1:33:43
Speaker 12: observe and take notice of him, because then you are
1:33:46
Speaker 12: to obey him.
1:33:47
Speaker 13: But does not, my lady, remember you are to love
1:33:51
Speaker 13: as well as obey.
1:33:53
Speaker 12: To love is a passion, It is a desire, and
1:33:56
Speaker 12: we must have no desires. Oh, I cannot endure the
1:33:59
Speaker 12: reflection with what insensibility on my part? With what more
1:34:03
Speaker 12: than patience have I been exposed and offered to some
1:34:06
Speaker 12: awkward booby or other in every county of Great Britain.
1:34:09
Speaker 13: Indeed, Madam, I wonder I never heard you speak of
1:34:13
Speaker 13: it before.
1:34:13
Speaker 12: With this indignation, every corner of the land has presented
1:34:17
Speaker 12: me with a wealthy coxcomb. As fast as one treaty
1:34:20
Speaker 12: has gone off, another has come on, till my name
1:34:23
Speaker 12: and person have been the tittle tattle of the whole town.
1:34:26
Speaker 12: What does this world come to? No shame left to
1:34:29
Speaker 12: be bartered, for like the beasts of the field, and
1:34:32
Speaker 12: that in such an instance as coming together to an
1:34:34
Speaker 12: entire familiarity and union of soul and body. Oh, and
1:34:38
Speaker 12: this without being so much as well wishers to each other,
1:34:41
Speaker 12: but for increase of fortune.
1:34:43
Speaker 13: But Madam, all these vexations will end very soon in
1:34:47
Speaker 13: one for all. Mister Simberton is your mother's kinsman, and
1:34:50
Speaker 13: three hundred years an older gentleman than any lover you
1:34:53
Speaker 13: ever had, for which reason, with that of his prodigious
1:34:58
Speaker 13: large estate, she is resolved done him, and has sent
1:35:01
Speaker 13: to consult the lawyers. Accordingly, nay, has whether you know
1:35:06
Speaker 13: it or no, been entreaty with Sir Geoffrey, who to
1:35:09
Speaker 13: join in the settlement, has accepted of a sum to
1:35:12
Speaker 13: do it, and is every moment expected in town for
1:35:15
Speaker 13: that purpose.
1:35:17
Speaker 12: How do you get all this intelligence?
1:35:19
Speaker 13: By an art I have? I thank my stars beyond
1:35:22
Speaker 13: all the weighting maids in Great Britain, the art of listening, Madam,
1:35:27
Speaker 13: for your lady's service.
1:35:29
Speaker 12: I shall soon know, as much as you do leave me,
1:35:31
Speaker 12: leave me. Phyllis begone here here, I'll turn you out.
1:35:35
Speaker 12: My mother says, I must not converse with my servants,
1:35:37
Speaker 12: though I must converse with no one.
1:35:39
Speaker 1: Else except Phyllis.
1:35:42
Speaker 12: How unhappy are we who were born to great fortunes.
1:35:45
Speaker 12: No one looks at us with indifference or acts towards
1:35:48
Speaker 12: us on the foot of plain dealing. Yet by all
1:35:51
Speaker 12: I have been heretofore offered to or treated, For I
1:35:55
Speaker 12: have been used with the most agreeable of all abuses, flattery.
1:35:59
Speaker 12: But now by this phlegmatic fool, I'm used as nothing
1:36:02
Speaker 12: or a mere thing. He forsooth, is too wise, too learned,
1:36:07
Speaker 12: to have any regard for desires. And I know not
1:36:10
Speaker 12: what the learned oath calls sentiments of love and passion.
1:36:13
Speaker 12: Here he comes with my mother. It's much if he
1:36:16
Speaker 12: looks at me, or if he does takes no more
1:36:18
Speaker 12: notice of me than of any other movable in the room.
1:36:21
Speaker 1: And missus sealand a mister simpleton.
1:36:25
Speaker 9: How do I admire this noble, this learned taste of yours,
1:36:30
Speaker 9: and the word you regard You have to our own
1:36:32
Speaker 9: ancient and honorable house. In consulting a means to keep
1:36:36
Speaker 9: the blood as pure and as regularly descended as may be.
1:36:41
Speaker 5: Why, really, ma'am, the young women of this age are
1:36:45
Speaker 5: treated with discourses of such a tendency, and their imaginations
1:36:50
Speaker 5: so bewildered in flesh and blood that a man of
1:36:54
Speaker 5: reason can't talk to be understood. They have no ideas
1:36:58
Speaker 5: of happiness. But what are more gross than the gratification
1:37:03
Speaker 5: of hunger and thirst?
1:37:07
Speaker 12: Aside with how much reflection, he is a coxcomb.
1:37:11
Speaker 5: And in truth, ma'am, I have considered it a most
1:37:15
Speaker 5: brutal custom that persons of the first character in the
1:37:19
Speaker 5: world should go, as ordinarily and with as little shame
1:37:24
Speaker 5: to bed as to dinner with one another. They proceed
1:37:28
Speaker 5: to the propagation of the species as openly as to
1:37:32
Speaker 5: the preservation of the individual lusender.
1:37:36
Speaker 12: Aside, she that willingly goes to bed to thee must
1:37:39
Speaker 12: have no shame.
1:37:40
Speaker 9: I'm sure, oh, cousin Symburton, Cousin Simburton, how abstracted, how
1:37:47
Speaker 9: refined is your sense of things? But indeed it is
1:37:51
Speaker 9: too true. There is nothing so ordinary as to say,
1:37:55
Speaker 9: in the best governed families, my master and lady have
1:37:59
Speaker 9: gone to One does not know, but it might have
1:38:03
Speaker 9: been said of oneself.
1:38:06
Speaker 5: Hiding her face with her fan lycurgius, ma'am instituted. Otherwise,
1:38:13
Speaker 5: among the Lacedaemians, the whole female world was pregnant, but
1:38:18
Speaker 5: none but the mothers themselves knew by whom their meetings
1:38:23
Speaker 5: were secret, and the amorous congress always by stealth, and
1:38:29
Speaker 5: no such professed doings between the sexes as are tolerated
1:38:33
Speaker 5: among us under the audacious word marriage.
1:38:38
Speaker 9: Oh, had I lived in those days and been a
1:38:40
Speaker 9: matron of Sparta, one might, with less indecency have had
1:38:45
Speaker 9: ten children according to that modest institution, than one under
1:38:50
Speaker 9: the confusion of our modern, bear faced manner.
1:38:54
Speaker 17: Listener aside, and yet, poor woman, she has gone through
1:38:59
Speaker 17: the whole ceremony, and here I stand a melancholy proof
1:39:02
Speaker 17: of it.
1:39:03
Speaker 9: We will talk then of business. That girl walking about
1:39:07
Speaker 9: the room there is to be your wife. She has,
1:39:11
Speaker 9: I confess, no ideas, no sentiments that speak her born
1:39:15
Speaker 9: of a thinking mother.
1:39:18
Speaker 5: I have observed her. Her lively look, cre are and
1:39:23
Speaker 5: disengaged countenance, speaker very very What if you please, ma'am,
1:39:29
Speaker 5: to set her a little that.
1:39:31
Speaker 9: Way, Lucinda, say nothing to him. You are not a
1:39:36
Speaker 9: match for him. When you are married. You may speak
1:39:40
Speaker 9: to such a husband when you're spoken to. But I
1:39:43
Speaker 9: am disposing of you above yourself every way, ma'am.
1:39:48
Speaker 5: You cannot but observe the inconveniences. I expose myself too,
1:39:54
Speaker 5: in hopes that your ladyship will be the consort of
1:39:57
Speaker 5: my better parts. As for the young woman, she is
1:40:02
Speaker 5: rather an impediment than a help to a man of
1:40:05
Speaker 5: letters and speculation. Mo'm, there is no reflection. No philosophy
1:40:12
Speaker 5: can at all times subdue the sensitive life. But the
1:40:16
Speaker 5: animal shall sometimes carry away the man. Hah I the
1:40:23
Speaker 5: vermilion of her.
1:40:24
Speaker 12: Lips, pray, don't talk of me?
1:40:27
Speaker 5: Thus, the pretty enough pants of her bosom.
1:40:31
Speaker 12: Sir, madam, don't you hear him?
1:40:34
Speaker 5: Her forward chest, intolerable high health.
1:40:40
Speaker 12: The grave easy impudence of him, proud heart, stupid cops, Come.
1:40:47
Speaker 5: I say, madam. Her impatience while we are looking at her,
1:40:51
Speaker 5: throws out all attractions, her arms, her neck, What a
1:40:57
Speaker 5: spring in her step?
1:40:59
Speaker 12: Don't you on me over? Thus you strange, unaccountable.
1:41:02
Speaker 5: What an elasticity in her veins and arterer.
1:41:06
Speaker 12: Is I have no veins, no arteries.
1:41:10
Speaker 9: Oh child, hear him, he talks. Finally, he's a scholar.
1:41:16
Speaker 9: He knows what you have.
1:41:18
Speaker 5: The speaking invitation of her shape, the gathering of herself up,
1:41:24
Speaker 5: and the indignation you see in the pretty little thing.
1:41:29
Speaker 5: Now I am considering her on this occasion, but as
1:41:33
Speaker 5: one that is to be pregnant.
1:41:37
Speaker 12: Listen aside the familiar, learned, unseasonable.
1:41:41
Speaker 5: Puppy and pregnant. Undoubtedly she will be yearly. I fear
1:41:47
Speaker 5: I shan't for many years have discretion enough to give
1:41:51
Speaker 5: her one fallow season monster.
1:41:55
Speaker 12: There's no bearing it, the hideous sot. There's no enduring
1:41:58
Speaker 12: it to be thus surveyed like a steed at.
1:42:00
Speaker 5: Sale at sale. She's very illiterate, but she's very well
1:42:07
Speaker 5: limbed to turn her in.
1:42:10
Speaker 1: I see what she is, oough exit listender in a.
1:42:15
Speaker 9: Rage, go you creature. I am ashamed of you.
1:42:21
Speaker 5: No harm done, you know, ma'am. The better sort of people,
1:42:26
Speaker 5: as I observe to you, treat by their lawyers of.
1:42:30
Speaker 1: Weddings adjusting himself at the glass.
1:42:34
Speaker 5: And the woman in the bargain, like the mansion house
1:42:39
Speaker 5: in the sale of the estate, is thrown in, and
1:42:43
Speaker 5: what that is, whether good or bad, is not at
1:42:46
Speaker 5: all considered.
1:42:48
Speaker 9: I grant it, and therefore make no demand for her
1:42:51
Speaker 9: youth and beauty and every other accomplishment, as the common
1:42:54
Speaker 9: word think. Because she's not polite.
1:42:58
Speaker 5: Ma'am, I know your exact understanding, abstracted as it is
1:43:03
Speaker 5: from vulgar prejudices, will not be offended when I declare
1:43:08
Speaker 5: to you I marry to have an heir to my estate,
1:43:13
Speaker 5: and not to beget a colony or a plantation. This
1:43:18
Speaker 5: young woman's beauty and constitution will demand provision for a
1:43:23
Speaker 5: tenth child at least.
1:43:25
Speaker 1: Missus Zealand.
1:43:27
Speaker 9: Aside with all that wit and learning, how considerate what
1:43:32
Speaker 9: an economist, Sir, I cannot make her any other than
1:43:37
Speaker 9: she is, or say she is much better than the
1:43:40
Speaker 9: other young women of this age, or fit for much
1:43:43
Speaker 9: besides being a mother. But I have given directions for
1:43:47
Speaker 9: the marriage settlements, and Sir Jeffrey Simburton's counsel is to
1:43:51
Speaker 9: meet ours here at this hour concerning dis joining in
1:43:55
Speaker 9: the deed, which, when executed, makes you capable of settling
1:44:00
Speaker 9: What is due to Lucinda's fortune herself. As I told you,
1:44:04
Speaker 9: I say nothing of.
1:44:07
Speaker 5: No, no indeed, ma'am, it is not usual, and I
1:44:12
Speaker 5: must depend upon my own reflection and philosophy not to
1:44:16
Speaker 5: overstock my family.
1:44:19
Speaker 9: I cannot help her cousin symbaton, but she is for
1:44:22
Speaker 9: aught I see, as well as the daughter of anybody else.
1:44:27
Speaker 5: That is very true, ma'am.
1:44:30
Speaker 1: And to a servant who whispers, Missus Zealand.
1:44:34
Speaker 9: The lawyers are come, and now we are to hear
1:44:37
Speaker 9: what they have resolved as to the point whether it's
1:44:40
Speaker 9: necessary that Sir Geoffrey should join in the settlement, as
1:44:44
Speaker 9: being what they call in the remainder. But good cousin,
1:44:48
Speaker 9: you must have patience with them. These lawyers, i am told,
1:44:52
Speaker 9: are of a different kind. One is what they call
1:44:55
Speaker 9: a chamber council, the other a pleader. The conveyance is
1:45:00
Speaker 9: slow from an imperfection in his speech, and therefore shunned
1:45:04
Speaker 9: the bar, but extremely passionate and impatient of contradiction. The
1:45:09
Speaker 9: other is as warm as he, but has a tongue
1:45:12
Speaker 9: so voluble and the heads so conceited he will suffer
1:45:16
Speaker 9: nobody to speak but himself.
1:45:18
Speaker 5: You mean old sergeant Target and counselor Bramble. I have
1:45:24
Speaker 5: heard of them.
1:45:26
Speaker 9: The same showing the gentleman.
1:45:29
Speaker 1: Exit servant re enter servant introducing Myrtle and Tom disguised
1:45:36
Speaker 1: as Bramble and Target.
1:45:39
Speaker 9: Gentlemen, this is the party concerned, mister Symbaton, and I
1:45:43
Speaker 9: hope you have considered of the matter.
1:45:46
Speaker 7: Yes, madam, we have agreed that it must be by
1:45:50
Speaker 7: indent dent, dent dent.
1:45:57
Speaker 4: Yes, Madame, mister Sergeant and myself have a as he
1:46:00
Speaker 4: is pleased to inform you that it must be an
1:46:03
Speaker 4: indenture tripartite and tripartite. Let it be for Sir Jeffrey
1:46:08
Speaker 4: must needs be a party. Old Sebton in the year
1:46:12
Speaker 4: sixteen nineteen says in that the ancient role in mister
1:46:15
Speaker 4: Sergeant's hands, as recour stair to being had, will more
1:46:19
Speaker 4: at large appear.
1:46:21
Speaker 7: Yes, and by the deeds in your hands it appears that.
1:46:25
Speaker 4: Mister Sergeant, I beg of you to make no inferences
1:46:28
Speaker 4: upon what is in our custody, but speak to the
1:46:31
Speaker 4: titles in your own deeds. I shall not show that detail.
1:46:35
Speaker 4: My client is in town.
1:46:37
Speaker 5: You know best your own methods.
1:46:40
Speaker 9: The single question is whether he entailed is such that
1:46:44
Speaker 9: my cousin, Sir Jeffrey, is necessary in this affair.
1:46:49
Speaker 4: Yes, as to the lordship of Traetriplet, but not as
1:46:52
Speaker 4: to the mess wage of grim Gribber.
1:46:55
Speaker 7: I say that, yeah, that's grim Griver. Grim River is
1:47:05
Speaker 7: in us. That is to say, the remainder thereof, as
1:47:10
Speaker 7: well as that of Triplet.
1:47:16
Speaker 4: You go upon the deed of Sir Ralph made in
1:47:18
Speaker 4: the middle of the last century. Precedent to that which
1:47:21
Speaker 4: old Simberton made over the remainder and made it pass
1:47:25
Speaker 4: to the heirs in general, by which your client comes
1:47:28
Speaker 4: in at our question whether the remainder, even if true triplet,
1:47:32
Speaker 4: is in him. But we are willing to waive that
1:47:35
Speaker 4: and give him a valuable consideration. But we shall not
1:47:39
Speaker 4: purchase what is in us forever as grim Griver is
1:47:42
Speaker 4: at the rate as we got against the contingent of
1:47:45
Speaker 4: mister Simberton having no son, then we know Sir Jeffrey
1:47:49
Speaker 4: is the first of the collateral male line in this family.
1:47:53
Speaker 4: Yet their burgh is apprehend you very well, and your
1:48:02
Speaker 4: argument might be a force, and we would be inclined
1:48:05
Speaker 4: to hear that in all its spots. But Sir, I
1:48:08
Speaker 4: see very plainly what you are going into. I tell
1:48:12
Speaker 4: you it is as probable a contingent that Sir Jeffrey
1:48:15
Speaker 4: may die before mister Simberton as that he may outlive him.
1:48:19
Speaker 7: Sir, we are not tried for that yet. But I
1:48:22
Speaker 7: must say, Sir.
1:48:24
Speaker 4: I allow you the whole extent of her argument, but
1:48:27
Speaker 4: that will go no farther than as to the claimants
1:48:30
Speaker 4: under old symbaton. I am of the opinion that according
1:48:33
Speaker 4: to the instruction of Sir Ralph, he could not dock
1:48:36
Speaker 4: the entail and then create our new estate for the heirs.
1:48:39
Speaker 7: General, Sir, I have not patience to be told that
1:48:43
Speaker 7: when go very I will allow.
1:48:49
Speaker 4: It you, mister sergeant. But there must be the word
1:48:52
Speaker 4: heirs forever to make such an estate as you pretend.
1:48:56
Speaker 5: I must be impartial, though you are our counsel for
1:49:01
Speaker 5: my side of the question. Were it not that you
1:49:05
Speaker 5: are so good as to allow him what he has
1:49:07
Speaker 5: not said, I should think it very hard. You should
1:49:11
Speaker 5: answer him without hearing him. But gentlemen, I believe you
1:49:17
Speaker 5: have both considered this matter and are firm in your
1:49:21
Speaker 5: different opinions. Twere better Therefore you proceeded according to the
1:49:26
Speaker 5: particular sense of each of you, and gave your thoughts
1:49:30
Speaker 5: distinctly in writing. And do you see, sirs pray? Let
1:49:35
Speaker 5: me have a copy of what you say in English?
1:49:39
Speaker 4: Why what is it all we have been saying in English? Oh?
1:49:44
Speaker 4: But I forget myself. You're a wet But however, to
1:49:48
Speaker 4: please you, Sir, you shall have it in as plain
1:49:51
Speaker 4: terms as the law will admit of.
1:49:53
Speaker 5: I would have it, sir, without delay.
1:49:56
Speaker 4: That's the law will not admit of sitting in Westminster,
1:50:01
Speaker 4: and I am this moment obliged to be at every
1:50:03
Speaker 4: one of them, and twould be wrong if I should
1:50:06
Speaker 4: not be in the hall to attend one of them.
1:50:08
Speaker 4: At least the rest would take it ill. Else Therefore,
1:50:11
Speaker 4: I must leave what I have said to mister Sergeant's consideration,
1:50:15
Speaker 4: and I will adjust his arguments on my part, and
1:50:17
Speaker 4: you shall hear from me again, sir.
1:50:20
Speaker 1: Exit Bramble, agreed, Agreed.
1:50:25
Speaker 5: Mister Bramble is very quick. He parted a little abruptly.
1:50:30
Speaker 7: He could not bear my argument. I pinched him to
1:50:33
Speaker 7: the quick about that girl.
1:50:38
Speaker 9: There, I saw that, for he dares not so much
1:50:42
Speaker 9: as hear you. I shall send to you, mister Sergeant,
1:50:46
Speaker 9: as soon as Sir Jeffrey comes to town, and then
1:50:49
Speaker 9: I hope all may be adjusted.
1:50:52
Speaker 7: I shall be at my chambers at my usual hours.
1:50:57
Speaker 5: Exit mo'm if you please. I'll now attend you to
1:51:02
Speaker 5: the tea table, where I shall hear from your ladyship
1:51:05
Speaker 5: reason and good sense. After all this law and gibberish.
1:51:11
Speaker 9: This is a wonderful thing, sir, that men of professions
1:51:14
Speaker 9: do not study to talk the substance of what they
1:51:17
Speaker 9: have to say in the language of the rest of
1:51:20
Speaker 9: the world, should they'd find their account in it.
1:51:24
Speaker 5: They might, perhaps, ma'am, with people of your good sense,
1:51:29
Speaker 5: but with the generality twould never do. The vulgar would
1:51:34
Speaker 5: have no respect for truth and knowledge if they were
1:51:37
Speaker 5: exposed to naked view. Truth is too simple, of all
1:51:42
Speaker 5: art bereaved, since the world will, why let it be deceived?
1:51:49
Speaker 1: Excellent? End of Act three, Act the fourth sin one
1:51:57
Speaker 1: Bevillgnior's lodgings with a letter in his hand, followed by tom.
1:52:04
Speaker 7: Upon my life, Sir, I know nothing of the matter.
1:52:08
Speaker 7: I never opened my lips to Master Myrtle about anything
1:52:10
Speaker 7: of the honors letter to Madame Lucinda.
1:52:13
Speaker 3: What's the fool in such a fright? For I don't
1:52:16
Speaker 3: suppose you did. What I would know is whether mister
1:52:19
Speaker 3: Myrtle shows any suspicion or asked you any questions to
1:52:23
Speaker 3: lead you to say casually that you had carried any
1:52:26
Speaker 3: such letter for me this morning?
1:52:29
Speaker 7: Why, sir? If he did ask me any questions, how
1:52:32
Speaker 7: could I help it?
1:52:33
Speaker 3: I don't say you could. Oh, I'm not questioning you,
1:52:36
Speaker 3: but him. What did he say to you?
1:52:39
Speaker 7: Why, sir? When I came to his chambers to be dressed,
1:52:42
Speaker 7: for the lawyer's part. Your Honor was pleased to put
1:52:44
Speaker 7: me upon. He asked me if I had been at
1:52:47
Speaker 7: master ceilings this morning? So I told him, Sir, I
1:52:50
Speaker 7: often went thither, because Sir, if I had not said that,
1:52:54
Speaker 7: he might have thought there was something more in my
1:52:57
Speaker 7: going now than at another time.
1:53:00
Speaker 3: Very well, aside the fellow's caution, I find has given
1:53:04
Speaker 3: him this jealousy. Did he ask you no other questions?
1:53:10
Speaker 7: Yes, sir, Now I remember as he came away in
1:53:13
Speaker 7: the Hackney coach Master sidns Tom says he. As I
1:53:17
Speaker 7: came into your master this morning, he bade you go
1:53:19
Speaker 7: for an answer to a letter he had sent. Pray,
1:53:22
Speaker 7: did you bring him any? Says he? Aur says I, Sir,
1:53:25
Speaker 7: your Honor is pleased to choke with me. You have
1:53:27
Speaker 7: a mind to know whether I can keep a secret in.
1:53:29
Speaker 3: Her, and so by showing him you could, you told
1:53:33
Speaker 3: him you had one. Sir, what mean actions does jealousy
1:53:39
Speaker 3: make a command stoop to? How poorly has he used
1:53:42
Speaker 3: art with a servant to make him betray his master?
1:53:45
Speaker 2: Well?
1:53:46
Speaker 3: And when did he give you this letter for me?
1:53:49
Speaker 7: Say? He read it before he pulled off his lawyer's gown.
1:53:52
Speaker 7: At his own chambers very well.
1:53:55
Speaker 3: And what did he say when you brought him my
1:53:57
Speaker 3: answer to it?
1:53:58
Speaker 7: He looked a little out of humors and said it
1:54:01
Speaker 7: was very well.
1:54:02
Speaker 3: I knew he would be grave upont wait without hmm good.
1:54:07
Speaker 7: I don't like this. I'm afraid we are all in
1:54:10
Speaker 7: the wrong box.
1:54:11
Speaker 1: Here Exit Tom.
1:54:14
Speaker 3: I put on a serenity while my fellow was present,
1:54:17
Speaker 3: but I have never been more thoroughly disturbed this hot
1:54:21
Speaker 3: man to write me a challenge on supposed artificial dealing
1:54:25
Speaker 3: when I professed myself his friend. I can live contented
1:54:29
Speaker 3: without glory, but I cannot suffer shame. What's to be done?
1:54:34
Speaker 3: But first let me consider Lucinda's letter again, reads Sir,
1:54:40
Speaker 3: I hope it is consistent with the laws a woman
1:54:43
Speaker 3: ought to impose upon herself. To acknowledge that your manner
1:54:46
Speaker 3: of declining a treaty of marriage in our family, and
1:54:49
Speaker 3: desiring the refusal may come from me, has something more
1:54:53
Speaker 3: engaging in it than the courtship of him who I
1:54:56
Speaker 3: fear will fall to my lot, except your friend excerpts
1:55:00
Speaker 3: himself for our common safety and happiness. I have reasons
1:55:03
Speaker 3: for desiring. Mister Myrtle may not know of this letter
1:55:07
Speaker 3: till hereafter, and I am your most obliged, humble servant,
1:55:11
Speaker 3: Lucinda sealand well.
1:55:14
Speaker 1: But the PostScript reads.
1:55:17
Speaker 3: I won't, upon second thoughts, hide anything from you. But
1:55:21
Speaker 3: my reason for concealing this is that mister Myrtle has
1:55:24
Speaker 3: a jealousy in his temper, which gives me some terrors.
1:55:27
Speaker 3: But my esteem for him inclines me to hope that
1:55:30
Speaker 3: only an ill effect which sometimes accompanies a tender love,
1:55:34
Speaker 3: and what may be cured by a careful and unblameable conduct.
1:55:38
Speaker 3: Thus has this lady made me her friend and confidant,
1:55:42
Speaker 3: and put herself in a kind under my protection. I
1:55:46
Speaker 3: cannot tell him immediately the purport of her letter, except
1:55:50
Speaker 3: I would cure him of the violent and untractable passion
1:55:53
Speaker 3: of jealousy, and so serve him and her by disobeying
1:55:57
Speaker 3: her in the article of secrecy, more than I should
1:56:00
Speaker 3: by complying with her directions. But then this dueling, which
1:56:05
Speaker 3: custom is imposed upon every man who would live with
1:56:08
Speaker 3: reputation and honor in the world, how must I preserve
1:56:11
Speaker 3: myself from imputations?
1:56:13
Speaker 2: There?
1:56:14
Speaker 3: He'll forsooth call it or think it fear If I
1:56:18
Speaker 3: explain without fighting but his letter, I'll read it again reads, Sir,
1:56:26
Speaker 3: you have used me basely in corresponding and carrying on
1:56:30
Speaker 3: a treaty where you told me you were indifferent. I
1:56:33
Speaker 3: have changed my sword since I saw you, which advertisement
1:56:37
Speaker 3: I thought proper to send you against the next meeting
1:56:40
Speaker 3: between you and the injured Charles Myrtle.
1:56:44
Speaker 7: Enter Tom, Master Myrtle, sair, would your honor please to see.
1:56:49
Speaker 3: Why you stupid creature. Let mister Myrtle wait at my lodgings.
1:56:54
Speaker 3: Show him up.
1:56:55
Speaker 1: Exit Tom Well.
1:56:58
Speaker 3: I am resolved upon my carriage to him. He is
1:57:00
Speaker 3: in love and in every circumstance of life a little distrustful,
1:57:05
Speaker 3: which I must allow for.
1:57:06
Speaker 1: But here he is, And to Tom, introducing Myrtle, Sir.
1:57:12
Speaker 3: I am extremely obliged to you for this honor to Tom,
1:57:16
Speaker 3: But sir, you, with your very discerning face, leave the room.
1:57:21
Speaker 1: Exit Tom Well.
1:57:23
Speaker 3: Mister Myrtle, your commands with me.
1:57:26
Speaker 4: The time, the place, our long acquaintance, and many other
1:57:29
Speaker 4: circumstances which affect me on this occasion, oblige me without
1:57:33
Speaker 4: further ceremony or conference. To desire you would not, only
1:57:37
Speaker 4: as you already have, acknowledge the receipt of my leather,
1:57:40
Speaker 4: but also comply with the request in it. I must
1:57:43
Speaker 4: have farther notice taken of my message than these half
1:57:46
Speaker 4: lines I have yours. I shall be at home, sir.
1:57:50
Speaker 3: I own I have received a letter from you in
1:57:53
Speaker 3: a very unusual style, but as I design, everything in
1:57:57
Speaker 3: this matter shall be your own action, your own seeking.
1:58:00
Speaker 3: I shall understand nothing but what you are pleased to
1:58:03
Speaker 3: confirm face to face. And I have already forgot the
1:58:06
Speaker 3: contents of your epistle.
1:58:08
Speaker 4: This cool manner is very agreeable to the abuse you
1:58:11
Speaker 4: have already made of my simplicity and frankness. And I
1:58:14
Speaker 4: see your moderation tends to your advantage and not mine.
1:58:18
Speaker 4: To your own safety, not consideration of your friend.
1:58:21
Speaker 3: My own safety, mister Myrtle.
1:58:23
Speaker 4: Your own safety, mister Bevell, Look.
1:58:27
Speaker 3: You, mister Myrtle. There's no disguising that I understand what
1:58:31
Speaker 3: you would be at But sir, you know I have
1:58:35
Speaker 3: often dared to disapprove of the decisions A tyrant custom
1:58:38
Speaker 3: has introduced to the breach of all laws, both divine
1:58:42
Speaker 3: and human.
1:58:43
Speaker 4: Mister Bevil, mister Bevel, it would be a good first
1:58:48
Speaker 4: principle in those who have so tender a conscience that
1:58:51
Speaker 4: way to have as much abhorrence of doing injuries as
1:58:55
Speaker 4: as what as fear of answering for him.
1:58:59
Speaker 3: As fear of our answering for him. But that apprehension
1:59:03
Speaker 3: is just or blameable according to the object of that fear.
1:59:07
Speaker 3: I have often told you in confidence of heart, I
1:59:11
Speaker 3: abhort the daring to offend the author of life, and
1:59:14
Speaker 3: rushing into his presence, I say, by the very same act,
1:59:18
Speaker 3: to commit the crime against him, and immediately to urge
1:59:21
Speaker 3: on to his tribunal.
1:59:23
Speaker 4: Mister Bevil, I must tell you this coolness, this gravity,
1:59:28
Speaker 4: this show of conscience, shall never cheat me of my mistress.
1:59:32
Speaker 4: You have indeed the best excuse for life, the hopes
1:59:37
Speaker 4: of possessing Lucinda. But consider, Sir, I have as much
1:59:42
Speaker 4: a reason to be weary of it if I am
1:59:44
Speaker 4: to lose her, and my first attempt to recover her
1:59:46
Speaker 4: shall be to let her see the dauntless man who
1:59:50
Speaker 4: is to be her guardian and protector.
1:59:53
Speaker 3: Sir, show me but the least glimpse of argument that
1:59:56
Speaker 3: I am authorized by my own hand to vindicate any
2:00:00
Speaker 3: lordless insult of this nature, and I will show thee
2:00:03
Speaker 3: to chastise thee hardly deserves the name of courage, slight,
2:00:07
Speaker 3: inconsiderate man, There is, mister myrtle, no such terror in
2:00:12
Speaker 3: quick anger, And you shall you know not why be
2:00:16
Speaker 3: cool as you have? You know not why being warm
2:00:20
Speaker 3: is the woman.
2:00:20
Speaker 4: One loves so little an occasion for anger. You perhaps,
2:00:25
Speaker 4: who know not what it is to love? Who have
2:00:28
Speaker 4: your ready, your commodious, your foreign trinket for your loose hours,
2:00:33
Speaker 4: and from your fortune, your specious outward carriage and utter
2:00:36
Speaker 4: lucky circumstances as easy a way to the possession of
2:00:39
Speaker 4: a woman of honor. You know nothing of what it
2:00:43
Speaker 4: is to be alarmed, to be distracted with anxiety and
2:00:45
Speaker 4: terror of losing more than life. Your marriage, happy man
2:00:50
Speaker 4: goes on like common business. And in the interim you
2:00:53
Speaker 4: have your rambling captive, your Indian princess, for your soft
2:00:57
Speaker 4: moments of dalliance. You're convenient, You're ready, Indiana.
2:01:01
Speaker 3: You have touched me beyond the patience of a man.
2:01:04
Speaker 3: And I am excusable in the guard of innocence, or
2:01:08
Speaker 3: from the infirmity of human nature, which campaign no more.
2:01:11
Speaker 3: To accept your invitation and observe your letter, sir, I'll
2:01:16
Speaker 3: attend you enter.
2:01:18
Speaker 7: Tom did you call sir, I thought you did. I
2:01:23
Speaker 7: heard you speak aloud.
2:01:24
Speaker 3: Yes, go call a coach.
2:01:27
Speaker 7: Sir, master myrtle, friends, gentlemen, what do you mean I
2:01:34
Speaker 7: am but a servant?
2:01:35
Speaker 3: Or call a coach.
2:01:38
Speaker 1: Exit tom a long pause, walking sullenly by each other aside?
2:01:46
Speaker 3: Shall I so provoke to the uttermost recover myself at
2:01:51
Speaker 3: the entrance of a third person, and that my servant too,
2:01:55
Speaker 3: and not have respect enough to all I have ever
2:01:58
Speaker 3: been receiving from infancy, the obligation to the best of fathers,
2:02:03
Speaker 3: to an unhappy virgin too, whose life depends on mine.
2:02:07
Speaker 1: Shutting the door to myrtle, I.
2:02:11
Speaker 3: Have, thank Heaven had time to recollect myself, and shall not,
2:02:16
Speaker 3: for fear of what such a rash man as you
2:02:18
Speaker 3: think of me, keep longer unexplained the false appearances under
2:02:23
Speaker 3: which your infirmity of temper makes you suffer, when perhaps
2:02:27
Speaker 3: too much regard to a false point of honor makes
2:02:30
Speaker 3: me prolong the suffering.
2:02:32
Speaker 4: I am sure mister Bevell cannot dote, but I had
2:02:35
Speaker 4: rather have satisfaction from his innocence than his sword.
2:02:39
Speaker 3: Why then, would you ask it first?
2:02:41
Speaker 7: That way?
2:02:42
Speaker 4: Consider you kept your temper yourself no longer till I
2:02:47
Speaker 4: spoke to the disadvantage of her you loved.
2:02:50
Speaker 3: True, But let me tell you I have saved you
2:02:53
Speaker 3: from the most exquisite distress, even though you had succeeded
2:02:57
Speaker 3: in the dispute. I know you so well that I
2:03:00
Speaker 3: am sure to have found this letter about a man
2:03:03
Speaker 3: who had killed would have been worse than death to yourself.
2:03:06
Speaker 3: Read it aside when he is thoroughly mortified and shame
2:03:12
Speaker 3: has got the better of jealousy, when he has seen
2:03:15
Speaker 3: himself truly, he will deserve to be assisted towards obtaining
2:03:19
Speaker 3: lusciner myrtle.
2:03:21
Speaker 18: Aside, with what a superiority he has turned the injury
2:03:26
Speaker 18: on me as the aggressor. I begin to fear I
2:03:29
Speaker 18: have been too far transported a treaty in our family.
2:03:33
Speaker 4: Is not that saying too much? I shall relapse. But
2:03:37
Speaker 4: I find on the PostScript something like jealousy? With what
2:03:42
Speaker 4: face can I see my benefactor, my advocate, whom I
2:03:45
Speaker 4: have treated like a betrayer, Oh Bethel, With what word.
2:03:50
Speaker 3: Shall I there needs none to convinces much more than
2:03:54
Speaker 3: to conquer?
2:03:56
Speaker 11: But can you you have ah.
2:03:58
Speaker 3: Paid the inquiet you gave me in the change I
2:04:02
Speaker 3: see in you toward me alas what machines are we
2:04:06
Speaker 3: thy face is altered to that of another man, to that,
2:04:10
Speaker 3: my companion, my friend, that I.
2:04:13
Speaker 4: Could be such a precipitate wretch.
2:04:16
Speaker 3: Pray no more.
2:04:18
Speaker 4: Let me reflect on how many friends have died by
2:04:20
Speaker 4: the hands of friends for want of temper, and you
2:04:24
Speaker 4: must give me leave to say again and again how
2:04:27
Speaker 4: much I am beholden to that superior spirit. You have
2:04:31
Speaker 4: subdued me with what had become of one of us,
2:04:34
Speaker 4: or perhaps both, had you been as weak as I
2:04:37
Speaker 4: was and as incapable of reason.
2:04:40
Speaker 3: I congratulate to us both the escape from ourselves, and
2:04:44
Speaker 3: hope the memory of it will make us dearer friends
2:04:47
Speaker 3: than ever.
2:04:48
Speaker 4: Dear Bevil, your friendly conduct has convinced me that there
2:04:51
Speaker 4: is nothing manly but what is conducted by reason and
2:04:55
Speaker 4: agreeable to the practice of virtue and justice. And yet
2:04:59
Speaker 4: how many have been sacrificed to that idol the unreasonable
2:05:03
Speaker 4: opinion of men. Nay, they are so ridiculous in it
2:05:07
Speaker 4: that they often use their swords against each other with
2:05:10
Speaker 4: disassembled anger and real fear, betrayed by honor and compelled
2:05:15
Speaker 4: by shame, the hazard being to preserve a name nor
2:05:19
Speaker 4: dare inquire into the dread mistake till plunged in sad eternity.
2:05:23
Speaker 2: They awake excellent.
2:05:27
Speaker 1: Scene too, Saint James's Park. And to us, Sir John Bethel,
2:05:32
Speaker 1: and to mister sealand.
2:05:34
Speaker 8: Give me leave.
2:05:35
Speaker 14: However, mister sealand as we are upon a treaty for
2:05:38
Speaker 14: uniting our families, to mention only the business of an
2:05:41
Speaker 14: ancient house, genealogy and descent are to be of some
2:05:45
Speaker 14: consideration in an affair of this sort.
2:05:47
Speaker 2: Genealogy and descent. So there has been in our family
2:05:51
Speaker 2: a very large one. There was Galfred, the father of Edward,
2:05:56
Speaker 2: the father of Ptolemy, the father of Cressus, the father Richard,
2:06:01
Speaker 2: father of Henry, the marquis, father of Duke John.
2:06:06
Speaker 14: What do you rave, mister zealand all these great names
2:06:10
Speaker 14: in your family?
2:06:11
Speaker 2: These, yes, sir, I've heard my father name of old.
2:06:16
Speaker 14: And more, ay, sir. And did he say they were
2:06:20
Speaker 14: all in your family?
2:06:22
Speaker 2: Yes, sir, he kept them all. He was the greatest
2:06:25
Speaker 2: cocker in England, he said. Duke John won him many
2:06:29
Speaker 2: battles and never lost one.
2:06:32
Speaker 14: Oh, sir, your servant, you are laughing at my laying
2:06:35
Speaker 14: any stress upon descent but I must tell you, Sir,
2:06:40
Speaker 14: I never knew any one but he that wanted that
2:06:42
Speaker 14: advantage turned it into ridicule.
2:06:45
Speaker 2: And I never knew any one who had better advantages
2:06:48
Speaker 2: put that into his account. But, Sir John, value yourself
2:06:52
Speaker 2: as you please upon your ancient house, and betalk freely
2:06:56
Speaker 2: of everything you were pleased to put into your bill
2:06:58
Speaker 2: of rates on this occasion. Yet, Sir, I've made no
2:07:02
Speaker 2: objections to your son's family. Tis his models that I doubt.
2:07:08
Speaker 14: Sir, I can't help saying that what might injure a
2:07:12
Speaker 14: citizen's credit may be no stain to a gentleman's honor.
2:07:16
Speaker 2: Sir John, The honor of a gentleman is liable to
2:07:19
Speaker 2: be tainted by a small a matter as the credit
2:07:22
Speaker 2: of a trader. We are talking of a marriage, And
2:07:26
Speaker 2: in such a case, the father of a young woman
2:07:29
Speaker 2: will not think it an addition to the honor or
2:07:31
Speaker 2: credit of her lover that he is a keeper.
2:07:34
Speaker 14: Mister Sealand don't take upon you to spoil my son's
2:07:38
Speaker 14: marriage with any woman else.
2:07:40
Speaker 2: Sir John. Let him apply to any woman else that
2:07:44
Speaker 2: have as many mistresses as he pleases.
2:07:47
Speaker 14: My son, Sir, is a discreet and sober gentleman.
2:07:52
Speaker 2: Sah, I never saw a man that wenched soberly and discreetly,
2:07:56
Speaker 2: that ever left it off. The decency observed in the
2:07:59
Speaker 2: press dis hides even from the sinner the iniquity of it.
2:08:04
Speaker 2: They pursue it, not that their appetites hurry them away.
2:08:08
Speaker 2: But I warrant you, because tis their opinion, they may
2:08:12
Speaker 2: do it.
2:08:14
Speaker 14: Were what you suspect a truth? Do you design to
2:08:17
Speaker 14: keep your daughter of virgin till you find a man
2:08:19
Speaker 14: unblemished that way?
2:08:21
Speaker 2: Sah. As much as it as you take me far,
2:08:25
Speaker 2: I know the town and the world, and give me
2:08:28
Speaker 2: leave to say that we merchants are a species of
2:08:31
Speaker 2: gentry that have grown into the world this last century,
2:08:35
Speaker 2: and are as honorable and almost as useful as you
2:08:39
Speaker 2: landed folks that have always thought yourself so much above us,
2:08:44
Speaker 2: for your trading forsooth is extended no farther than a
2:08:48
Speaker 2: load of hay or a fat ox. You are pleasant people, indeed,
2:08:53
Speaker 2: because you are generally bred up to be lazy. Therefore
2:08:58
Speaker 2: I warrant you industry is dishonorable.
2:09:02
Speaker 14: Be not offended, sir, Let us go back to our point.
2:09:06
Speaker 2: Oh, not at all offended. But I don't love to
2:09:10
Speaker 2: leave any part of the account unclosed. Look you, sir John,
2:09:15
Speaker 2: Comparisons are odious, and more particularly so on occasions of
2:09:20
Speaker 2: this kind, when we are projecting races that are to
2:09:23
Speaker 2: be made out of both sides of the comparisons.
2:09:27
Speaker 14: But my son, Sir, is, in the eye of the world,
2:09:31
Speaker 14: a gentleman of merit, I own.
2:09:33
Speaker 2: To you, I think him so. But Sir John, I
2:09:38
Speaker 2: am a man exercised and experienced in chances and disasters.
2:09:43
Speaker 2: I lost in my earlier years a very fine wife,
2:09:47
Speaker 2: and with her a poor little infant. This makes me,
2:09:51
Speaker 2: perhaps overcautious to preserve the second bounty of providence to
2:09:56
Speaker 2: me and be as careful as I can of this child.
2:10:00
Speaker 2: Your pardon me, My poor girl, sir, is as valuable
2:10:05
Speaker 2: to me as your boasted son to you.
2:10:08
Speaker 14: Why that's one very good reason, mister Sealand why I
2:10:12
Speaker 14: wish my son had her.
2:10:15
Speaker 2: There is nothing but this strange lady, here, this incognita
2:10:19
Speaker 2: that can be objected to him. Here and there a
2:10:23
Speaker 2: man falls in love with an artful creature and gives
2:10:26
Speaker 2: up all the motives of life to that one passion.
2:10:30
Speaker 14: A man of my Son's understanding cannot be supposed to
2:10:33
Speaker 14: be one of them.
2:10:35
Speaker 2: Very wise men have been so enslaved. And when a
2:10:39
Speaker 2: man marries with one of them upon his hands, whether
2:10:43
Speaker 2: moved from the demand of the world or slighter reasons,
2:10:47
Speaker 2: such a husband soils with his wife for a month perhaps,
2:10:51
Speaker 2: and then good beway, madam, that show's over.
2:10:56
Speaker 11: Ah.
2:10:56
Speaker 2: John Dryden points out such a husband to a hair
2:10:59
Speaker 2: when he says, and while abroad, Sir, prodigal the dolt
2:11:03
Speaker 2: is poor spouse at home as ragged as a cult
2:11:07
Speaker 2: is now in plain term, Sir, I shall not care
2:11:12
Speaker 2: to have my poor girl turned agrazing, and that must
2:11:16
Speaker 2: be the case when.
2:11:17
Speaker 14: But pray consider sir, my son.
2:11:20
Speaker 2: Look you, sir, I'll make the matter short. This unknown lady,
2:11:24
Speaker 2: as I told you, is all the objection I have
2:11:27
Speaker 2: to him. But one way or other he is or
2:11:32
Speaker 2: has been, certainly engaged to her. I am therefore resolved
2:11:38
Speaker 2: this very afternoon to visit her. Now from her behavior
2:11:43
Speaker 2: or appearance, I shall soon be let into what I
2:11:47
Speaker 2: may fear or hope.
2:11:49
Speaker 14: For, Sir, I am very confident there can be nothing
2:11:53
Speaker 14: inquired into relating to my son that will, not, upon
2:11:56
Speaker 14: being understood, turn to his advantage.
2:12:00
Speaker 2: I hope that sincerely as you believe it, Sir John Bevell,
2:12:05
Speaker 2: when I am satisfied in this great point, if your
2:12:08
Speaker 2: son's conduct answers the character you give him, I shall
2:12:12
Speaker 2: wish your alliance more than that of any gentleman in
2:12:15
Speaker 2: Great Britain. And so your servant exit.
2:12:21
Speaker 14: He is gone in a way but barely civil, but
2:12:24
Speaker 14: his great wealth and the merit of his only child,
2:12:27
Speaker 14: the heirest of it, are not to be lost for
2:12:29
Speaker 14: a little peevishness. And to Humphrey, ah, Humphrey, you are
2:12:35
Speaker 14: calme in a seasonable minute. I want to talk to THEE,
2:12:38
Speaker 14: and to tell THEE that my head and heart are
2:12:40
Speaker 14: on the rack about my son.
2:12:43
Speaker 6: Sir, you may trust his discretion. I am sure you may.
2:12:47
Speaker 14: Why I do believe I may, And yet I am
2:12:50
Speaker 14: in a thousand fears when I lay this vast wealth
2:12:53
Speaker 14: before me, when I consider his prepossessions either generous to
2:12:57
Speaker 14: a folly in an honorable love, or a past redemption
2:13:01
Speaker 14: in a vicious one, and from the one or the other,
2:13:04
Speaker 14: his insensibility to the fairest prospects towards doubling our estate.
2:13:09
Speaker 14: A father who knows how useful wealth is and how
2:13:12
Speaker 14: necessary even to those who despise it. I say, a father, Humphrey,
2:13:17
Speaker 14: A father cannot bear it.
2:13:19
Speaker 6: Be not transported, Sir, you will grow incapable of taking
2:13:23
Speaker 6: any resolution in your perplexity.
2:13:26
Speaker 14: Yet, as angry as I am with him, I would
2:13:30
Speaker 14: not have him surprised in anything. This mercantile rough man
2:13:34
Speaker 14: may go grossly into the examination of this matter and
2:13:37
Speaker 14: talk to the gentlewoman so as too.
2:13:40
Speaker 6: No, I hope not in an abrupt manner.
2:13:44
Speaker 14: No, I hope not. Why dost thou know anything of
2:13:48
Speaker 14: her or of him, or of anything of it or
2:13:51
Speaker 14: all of it?
2:13:52
Speaker 6: Oh, my dear master, I know so much that I
2:13:55
Speaker 6: told him this very day you had reason to be
2:13:59
Speaker 6: secretly out of humor about her?
2:14:01
Speaker 14: Did you go so far?
2:14:03
Speaker 2: Well?
2:14:03
Speaker 14: What said he to that his words.
2:14:06
Speaker 6: Were looking upon me steadfastly? Humphrey says he that woman
2:14:11
Speaker 6: is a woman of honor.
2:14:13
Speaker 14: Ah, do you think he is married to her or
2:14:16
Speaker 14: designs to marry her?
2:14:18
Speaker 6: I can say nothing to the latter, But he says
2:14:22
Speaker 6: he can marry no one without your consent while you
2:14:25
Speaker 6: are living.
2:14:26
Speaker 14: If he said so much, I know he scorns to
2:14:29
Speaker 14: break his word with me.
2:14:31
Speaker 6: I am sure of that.
2:14:33
Speaker 14: You are sure of that, well, that's some comfort. Then
2:14:37
Speaker 14: I have nothing to do but to see the bottom
2:14:40
Speaker 14: of this matter during this present ruffle. Ah Humphrey, you
2:14:45
Speaker 14: are not ill, I hope, sir. Yes, a man is
2:14:48
Speaker 14: very ill. That's in a very ill humor. To be
2:14:52
Speaker 14: a father is to be in care for one whom
2:14:54
Speaker 14: you oftener disoblige than please by that very care. Oh,
2:14:59
Speaker 14: that sons could know the duty to a father before
2:15:01
Speaker 14: they themselves are fathers. But perhaps you'll say now that
2:15:06
Speaker 14: I am one of the happiest fathers in the world.
2:15:09
Speaker 14: But I assure you that how the very happiest is
2:15:13
Speaker 14: not a condition to be envied.
2:15:15
Speaker 2: Sir.
2:15:16
Speaker 6: Your pain arises not from the thing itself, but your
2:15:19
Speaker 6: particular sense of it. You are over fond, Nay, give
2:15:24
Speaker 6: me leave to say you are unjustly apprehensive from your fondness.
2:15:29
Speaker 6: My master Bevill never disobliged you, and he will. I
2:15:33
Speaker 6: know he will do everything you ought to expect.
2:15:38
Speaker 14: He won't take all this money with the girl for aught.
2:15:41
Speaker 14: I know he will forsooth have so much moderation as
2:15:45
Speaker 14: to think he ought not to force his liking for
2:15:47
Speaker 14: any consideration.
2:15:49
Speaker 6: He is to marry her, not you. He is to
2:15:53
Speaker 6: live with her.
2:15:54
Speaker 14: Not to you, sir, I know not what to think,
2:15:58
Speaker 14: but I know nothing can be more miserable than to
2:16:01
Speaker 14: be in this doubt.
2:16:03
Speaker 11: Follow me.
2:16:04
Speaker 14: I must come to some resolution.
2:16:06
Speaker 1: Excellent scene three Bevil Junior's lodgings. Enter Tom and Phyllis.
2:16:15
Speaker 7: Well, Madam. If you must speak with Master Meddle, you shall.
2:16:18
Speaker 7: He is now with my master in the library.
2:16:20
Speaker 13: But you must leave me alone with him, for he
2:16:23
Speaker 13: can't make me a present, nor I so handsomely take
2:16:26
Speaker 13: anything from him before you. It would not be decent.
2:16:30
Speaker 7: It will be very decent, indeed, for me to retire
2:16:32
Speaker 7: and leave my mistress with another man.
2:16:34
Speaker 13: He is a gentleman and will treat one properly.
2:16:38
Speaker 7: I believe so. But however I won't be far off,
2:16:42
Speaker 7: and therefore will venture to trust you. I'll call him
2:16:44
Speaker 7: to you.
2:16:46
Speaker 1: Exit Tom.
2:16:48
Speaker 13: What a deal of parther and Sputter hears between my
2:16:51
Speaker 13: mistress and mister Myrtle from mere punctilio. I could any
2:16:56
Speaker 13: hour of the day get her to her lover, and
2:16:58
Speaker 13: I would do it. But she, forsooth will allow no
2:17:03
Speaker 13: plot to get him. But if he can come to her,
2:17:07
Speaker 13: I know she would be glad of it. I must
2:17:11
Speaker 13: therefore do her unacceptable violence and surprise her into his arms.
2:17:16
Speaker 13: I am sure I go by the best rule imaginable.
2:17:20
Speaker 13: If she were my maid, I should think her the
2:17:22
Speaker 13: best servant in the world for doing so by me.
2:17:26
Speaker 1: Enter Myrtle and Tom, Oh.
2:17:29
Speaker 13: Sir, you and mister Bevel are fine gentleman to let
2:17:33
Speaker 13: a lady remain under such difficulties as my poor mistress,
2:17:37
Speaker 13: and no attempt to set her at liberty or release
2:17:40
Speaker 13: her from the danger of being instantly married to Simberton.
2:17:45
Speaker 4: Tom has been telling. But what is to be done?
2:17:49
Speaker 13: What is to be done when a man can't come
2:17:51
Speaker 13: at his mistress? Why can't you fire our house or
2:17:56
Speaker 13: the next house to us to make us run out?
2:17:59
Speaker 13: And you take us?
2:18:00
Speaker 4: How missus Phillips, I let me see that rogue.
2:18:05
Speaker 13: Deny to fire a house, make a riot, or any
2:18:09
Speaker 13: other little thing when there were no other way to
2:18:11
Speaker 13: come at me.
2:18:13
Speaker 7: I am obliged here, madam.
2:18:15
Speaker 13: Why don't we hear every day of people hanging themselves
2:18:18
Speaker 13: for love? And won't they venture the hazard of being
2:18:21
Speaker 13: hanged for love?
2:18:24
Speaker 4: Ah? Were I a man, what manly thing will you
2:18:28
Speaker 4: have me undertake? According to your Ladyship's notion of a man.
2:18:32
Speaker 13: Only be at once what one time or other you
2:18:36
Speaker 13: may be and wish to be, or must be.
2:18:40
Speaker 4: Dear girl, talk plainly to me and consider I, in
2:18:45
Speaker 4: my condition can't be in very good humor. You say
2:18:48
Speaker 4: to be at once what I must be?
2:18:51
Speaker 13: I ay, I mean no more than to be an
2:18:54
Speaker 13: old man. I saw you do it very well at
2:18:57
Speaker 13: the masquerade. In a word, Old Sir Jeoffrey Simbaton is
2:19:02
Speaker 13: every hour expected in town to join in the deeds
2:19:06
Speaker 13: and settlements for marrying mister Simberton. He is half blind,
2:19:10
Speaker 13: half lame, half death, half dumb, though has to his
2:19:14
Speaker 13: passions and desires. He is as warm and ridiculous as
2:19:18
Speaker 13: when in the heat of youth.
2:19:20
Speaker 7: Come to the business and don't keep the gentleman in
2:19:22
Speaker 7: suspense for the pleasure being courted as you serve me.
2:19:25
Speaker 13: I saw you at the masquerade act such a one
2:19:27
Speaker 13: to perfection. Go and put on that very habit and
2:19:31
Speaker 13: come to our house. As Sir Jeoffrey. There is not
2:19:34
Speaker 13: one there but myself knows his person. I was born
2:19:38
Speaker 13: in the parish where he is lord of the manor.
2:19:40
Speaker 13: I have seen him often and often at church in
2:19:43
Speaker 13: the country. Do not hesitate, but come hither. They will
2:19:48
Speaker 13: think you bring certain security against mister Myrtle. And you
2:19:52
Speaker 13: bring mister Myrtle leave the rest to me. I leave
2:19:57
Speaker 13: this with you and expect they don't. I told you
2:20:01
Speaker 13: know you they think you out of town. Would you
2:20:04
Speaker 13: had as good be forever? If you lose this opportunity,
2:20:07
Speaker 13: I must be gone. I know I am wanted at home.
2:20:12
Speaker 1: My dear Phyllis m catches and kisses her and gives
2:20:17
Speaker 1: her money.
2:20:18
Speaker 13: Ah, Fie, my kisses are not my own. You have
2:20:22
Speaker 13: committed violence. But I'll carry him to the right owner.
2:20:26
Speaker 1: Tom kisses her to Tom, come see.
2:20:30
Speaker 13: Me downstairs and leave the lover to think of his
2:20:34
Speaker 13: last game for the prize.
2:20:37
Speaker 1: Excellent Tom and Phyllis.
2:20:40
Speaker 4: I think I will instantly attempt this wild expedient. The
2:20:43
Speaker 4: extravagance of it will make me less suspected, and it
2:20:46
Speaker 4: will give me opportunity to assert my own right to Liscinda,
2:20:50
Speaker 4: without whom I cannot live. But I am so mortified
2:20:53
Speaker 4: at this conduct of mine towards poor Bebel. He must
2:20:56
Speaker 4: think meanly of me. I know not how to reassume
2:20:59
Speaker 4: myself and be in the spirit enough for such an
2:21:02
Speaker 4: adventure as this, yet I must attempt it, if it
2:21:06
Speaker 4: be only to be near Lucinda under her present perplexities
2:21:10
Speaker 4: ensure the next delight to transport with the fair is
2:21:14
Speaker 4: to relieve her in her house of care.
2:21:17
Speaker 1: Exit end of Act four, Act the fifth seen one
2:21:24
Speaker 1: Celand's house and to fillis with lights before myrtle disguised
2:21:30
Speaker 1: like old Sir Jeffrey, supported by Missus Cealand, Lucinda and Symbaton.
2:21:37
Speaker 9: Now I have seen you thus first, Sir Jeffrey, will
2:21:40
Speaker 9: you excuse me a moment while I give my necessary
2:21:44
Speaker 9: orders for your accommodation.
2:21:46
Speaker 1: Exit Missus Zealand.
2:21:48
Speaker 4: I have not seen you, Cousin Simberton, since you were
2:21:51
Speaker 4: ten years old, and as it is incumbent on you
2:21:54
Speaker 4: to keep up our name and family, I shall, upon
2:21:57
Speaker 4: very reasonable terms, join with you in a settlement to
2:22:00
Speaker 4: that purpose. Though I must tell you, Cousin, this is
2:22:03
Speaker 4: the first merchant that has married into our house.
2:22:06
Speaker 12: Listener aside de Sonon, am I a merchant because my
2:22:11
Speaker 12: father is what is he?
2:22:13
Speaker 4: Directly a trader? At this time?
2:22:16
Speaker 5: There's no hiding the disgrace, Sir. He trades to all
2:22:21
Speaker 5: parts of the world.
2:22:23
Speaker 4: We never had one in our family. Before who descended
2:22:26
Speaker 4: from persons that did anything.
2:22:28
Speaker 5: Sir, Since it is a girl that they have, I am,
2:22:34
Speaker 5: for the honor of my family willing to take it
2:22:38
Speaker 5: in again and to sink her into our name, and
2:22:43
Speaker 5: no harm done.
2:22:45
Speaker 4: Disprudently and generously resolved. Is this the young thing?
2:22:51
Speaker 1: Yes, sir, Phyllis to Lsinda.
2:22:54
Speaker 13: Good Madam, don't be out of humor, but let them
2:22:57
Speaker 13: run there at most of their extravagance. Hear them out.
2:23:01
Speaker 4: Can't I see her nearer? My eyes are but.
2:23:04
Speaker 1: Weak, Phyllis to Listender.
2:23:08
Speaker 13: Besides, I am sure the uncle has something worth your notice.
2:23:12
Speaker 13: I'll take care to get off the young one and
2:23:15
Speaker 13: leave you to observe what may be wrought out of
2:23:17
Speaker 13: the old one.
2:23:18
Speaker 3: For your good.
2:23:20
Speaker 5: Exit, Mom, this old gentleman, your great uncle, desires to
2:23:28
Speaker 5: be introduced to you and to see you nearer. Approach
2:23:34
Speaker 5: sir by your leave.
2:23:36
Speaker 1: A young lady puts on spectacles.
2:23:39
Speaker 4: Cousin Simperton, she has exactly that sort of neck and
2:23:43
Speaker 4: bottom for which my sister Gertrude was so admired in
2:23:46
Speaker 4: the year sixty one, before the French dresses first discovered
2:23:50
Speaker 4: anything in women below the.
2:23:51
Speaker 17: Gin listener aside, what a very odd situation I am in,
2:23:57
Speaker 17: though I cannot but be diverted at the extravas of
2:24:00
Speaker 17: their humors equally unsuitable to their age. Chin quotha, I
2:24:04
Speaker 17: don't believe my passionate lover there knows whether I have
2:24:07
Speaker 17: one or not.
2:24:08
Speaker 4: Ha ha, Madam, I would not willingly offend, but I
2:24:12
Speaker 4: have a better glass.
2:24:14
Speaker 1: Pulls out a large one and to Phyllis, Phyllis, to Symbleton.
2:24:20
Speaker 13: Sir, My lady desires to show you the apartment that
2:24:24
Speaker 13: she intends for, Sir Jeffrey.
2:24:26
Speaker 5: Well, Sir, by that time you will have sufficiently gazed
2:24:32
Speaker 5: and suned yourself in the beauties of my spauce. There.
2:24:38
Speaker 5: I will wait on you again.
2:24:41
Speaker 1: Exit Simbleton and Phyllis.
2:24:44
Speaker 4: Were it not, Madame, that I might be troublesome. There
2:24:47
Speaker 4: is something of importance though we are alone, which I
2:24:50
Speaker 4: would say more safe from being heard.
2:24:53
Speaker 17: Listenda aside, there is something in this old fellow, methinks
2:24:58
Speaker 17: that raises my curiosity to be free.
2:25:01
Speaker 4: Madame, I as heartily condemn this kinsman of mine as
2:25:05
Speaker 4: you do, and I am sorry to see so much
2:25:07
Speaker 4: beauty and merit devoted by your parents to so insensible
2:25:11
Speaker 4: a possessor.
2:25:12
Speaker 12: Surprising, I hope, then, sir, you will not contribute to
2:25:16
Speaker 12: the wrong. You are so generous as to pity whatever
2:25:19
Speaker 12: may be the interest of your family.
2:25:21
Speaker 4: This hand of mine shall never be employed to sign
2:25:24
Speaker 4: anything against your good and happiness.
2:25:27
Speaker 12: I am sorry, sir, it is not in my power
2:25:29
Speaker 12: to make you proper acknowledgments. But there is a gentleman
2:25:32
Speaker 12: in the world whose gratitude will I am sure be
2:25:34
Speaker 12: worthy of the favor.
2:25:36
Speaker 4: All the thanks I desire, Madame, are.
2:25:38
Speaker 12: In your power to give, name them and command them.
2:25:42
Speaker 4: Only, Madame, that the first time you are alone with
2:25:45
Speaker 4: your lover, you will, with open arms receive.
2:25:48
Speaker 12: Him as willingly as his heart could wish it.
2:25:52
Speaker 4: Thus, then he claims your promise. Oh listen, Oh a cheat,
2:25:58
Speaker 4: A cheat, a cheat. Hush tis I tis I your lover,
2:26:03
Speaker 4: myrtle himself, Madame, Oh.
2:26:05
Speaker 12: Bless me, what a rashness and folly to surprise me.
2:26:09
Speaker 1: So but hush, my mother, enter missus, sealand simpleton and phyllis.
2:26:16
Speaker 13: How now what's the.
2:26:18
Speaker 12: Matter, oh madam? As soon as you left the room,
2:26:21
Speaker 12: my uncle fell into a sudden fit, and and so
2:26:24
Speaker 12: I cried out for help to support him and conduct
2:26:26
Speaker 12: him to his chamber.
2:26:28
Speaker 9: That was kindly done. Alas, sir, how do you find yourself?
2:26:34
Speaker 4: Never was taken in so odd away in my life?
2:26:37
Speaker 4: Pray lead me, oh I was talking here, Pray carry
2:26:41
Speaker 4: on to my cousin Symbaton's young lady, missus sealand aside my.
2:26:47
Speaker 9: Cousin Symbaton's young lady. How zealous he is even in
2:26:52
Speaker 9: his extremity for the match, A right simpleton?
2:26:57
Speaker 1: Simpleton and the sinder lead him as in pain pork's uncle?
2:27:03
Speaker 5: Will you pull my ear off?
2:27:06
Speaker 11: Pray?
2:27:06
Speaker 12: Uncle, you will squeeze me.
2:27:07
Speaker 9: To death, no matter, no matter he knows not what
2:27:11
Speaker 9: he does. Come, sir, shall I help you out?
2:27:15
Speaker 2: By no means?
2:27:16
Speaker 4: I'll trouble nobody but my young cousins.
2:27:19
Speaker 13: Here they lead him off, But pray, Madam, does your
2:27:23
Speaker 13: ladyship intend that mister Simberton shall really marry my young
2:27:27
Speaker 13: mistress at last?
2:27:29
Speaker 9: I don't think he likes, sir, that's not material. Men
2:27:33
Speaker 9: of his speculation are above desires. But be as it may.
2:27:38
Speaker 9: Now I have given old Sir Jeffrey the trouble of
2:27:40
Speaker 9: coming up to sign and seal. With what countenance can
2:27:44
Speaker 9: I be off?
2:27:45
Speaker 13: As well as with twenty others. Madam, it is the
2:27:49
Speaker 13: glory and honor of a great fortune to live in
2:27:52
Speaker 13: continual treaties and still to break off. It looks great, Madam.
2:27:58
Speaker 9: True Phillies, yet to return our blood again into the
2:28:01
Speaker 9: symbatons is an honor not to be rejected. But were
2:28:06
Speaker 9: you not saying that Sir John Bevill's creature Humphrey has
2:28:11
Speaker 9: been with mister Sealand, Yes.
2:28:13
Speaker 13: Madam, I overheard them agree that mister Sealand should go
2:28:17
Speaker 13: himself and visit this unknown lady that mister Bevill is
2:28:21
Speaker 13: so great with. And if he found nothing there to
2:28:23
Speaker 13: fight him, then mister Bedell should still marry my young mistress.
2:28:28
Speaker 9: How nay, then he shall find she is my daughter
2:28:32
Speaker 9: as well as his. I'll follow him this instant, and
2:28:35
Speaker 9: take the whole family along with me. The disputed power
2:28:39
Speaker 9: of disposing of my own daughter shall be at an
2:28:42
Speaker 9: end this very night. I'll live no longer in anxiety
2:28:47
Speaker 9: for a little hussy that hurts my appearance wherever I
2:28:50
Speaker 9: carry her, and for whose sake I seem to be
2:28:53
Speaker 9: at all regarded, And that in the best of my days.
2:28:58
Speaker 13: Indeed, Madam, if you were married, your ladyship might very
2:29:03
Speaker 13: well be taken for mister Sealand's daughter.
2:29:06
Speaker 9: Nay, when the chit has not been with me. I
2:29:09
Speaker 9: have heard the men say as much. I'll no longer
2:29:12
Speaker 9: cut off the greatest pleasure of a woman's life. The
2:29:16
Speaker 9: shining in assemblies by her forward anticipation of the respect
2:29:20
Speaker 9: that's due to her superior. She shall down to Symburton Hall,
2:29:25
Speaker 9: she shall, she shall.
2:29:29
Speaker 13: I hope, madam, I shall stay with your ladyship.
2:29:33
Speaker 9: Thou shalt Phyllis, and I'll place thee then more about me,
2:29:38
Speaker 9: but all the chairs immediately. I'll be gone this minute.
2:29:43
Speaker 1: Excellent seem to Charing Cross. Enter mister Sealand and Humphrey.
2:29:52
Speaker 2: I am very glad, mister Humphrey, that you agree with
2:29:55
Speaker 2: me that it is very common good I should look
2:29:57
Speaker 2: thoroughly into this matter.
2:30:00
Speaker 6: I am indeed of that opinion, for there is no artifice,
2:30:05
Speaker 6: nothing concealed in our family which ought in justice to
2:30:08
Speaker 6: be known. I need not desire you, sir, to treat
2:30:12
Speaker 6: the lady with care and respect.
2:30:15
Speaker 2: Master Humphrey, I shall not be rude, though I design
2:30:18
Speaker 2: to be a little abrupt, and coming to the matter
2:30:21
Speaker 2: at once to see how she will bear upon a surprise.
2:30:26
Speaker 6: That's the door, sir, I wish you success.
2:30:30
Speaker 1: While Humphrey speaks sealand consults his table book.
2:30:35
Speaker 6: I am less concerned what happens there, because I hear
2:30:38
Speaker 6: mister Myrtle is well lodged as old Sir Jeoffrey. So
2:30:42
Speaker 6: I'm willing to let this gentleman employ himself here to
2:30:46
Speaker 6: give them time at home, for I'm sure tis necessary
2:30:49
Speaker 6: for the quite of our family. Lucinda were disposed of
2:30:52
Speaker 6: out of it, since mister Bevill's inclination is so much
2:30:56
Speaker 6: otherwise engaged.
2:30:58
Speaker 2: Exit, I think this is the door knocks, Oh, carry
2:31:04
Speaker 2: this matter with an air of authority to inquire, though
2:31:07
Speaker 2: I make an errand to begin discourse knocks again and
2:31:12
Speaker 2: enter a footboy. So, young man, is your lady within
2:31:18
Speaker 2: a lax heir?
2:31:19
Speaker 8: I am but a country boy. I don't know whether
2:31:22
Speaker 8: she is or noah, But you stay a bit. I'll
2:31:25
Speaker 8: go in and ask the gentlewoman that's with her.
2:31:28
Speaker 2: Why, Sarah, Though you are a country boy, you can see,
2:31:32
Speaker 2: can't you? You know whether she is at home when
2:31:35
Speaker 2: you see her, don't you?
2:31:37
Speaker 8: Nay nay, I'm not such a country land either, master
2:31:41
Speaker 8: to think she's at home? Because I see her. I
2:31:44
Speaker 8: have been in town but a month, and I lost
2:31:46
Speaker 8: one place already for believing my own eyes.
2:31:49
Speaker 2: Why, Sarah, have you learned to lie already? Ah?
2:31:53
Speaker 8: Master, things that allies in the country are not lies.
2:31:57
Speaker 8: In London, I begin to know my business little better
2:32:00
Speaker 8: than so. But you please to walk in. A call
2:32:05
Speaker 8: gentleman to you that can tell you for certain she
2:32:08
Speaker 8: can make bo to ask my lady herself.
2:32:11
Speaker 2: Oh, then she is within, I find, though you dare
2:32:15
Speaker 2: not say so.
2:32:17
Speaker 8: Nay, nay, that's neither here nor dare. What's matter whether
2:32:21
Speaker 8: she is within or no? If she has not a
2:32:23
Speaker 8: mind to see anybody.
2:32:25
Speaker 2: I can't tell, Siah whether you are art or simple.
2:32:29
Speaker 2: But however, get me a direct answer, And here's a
2:32:32
Speaker 2: shilling for you.
2:32:34
Speaker 8: Will you please walk in? Now see what I can
2:32:37
Speaker 8: do for you.
2:32:38
Speaker 2: I see you will be fit for your business in time, child,
2:32:42
Speaker 2: But I expect to meet with nothing but extraordinaries in
2:32:45
Speaker 2: such a house.
2:32:47
Speaker 8: Such a house, sir, you haven't seen it yet?
2:32:51
Speaker 2: Pray walk in, sir, I'll wait upon you.
2:32:55
Speaker 1: Excellent Scene three Indiana's house, And to Isabella.
2:33:03
Speaker 10: What anxiety do I feel for this poor creature? What
2:33:08
Speaker 10: will be the end of her, such a languishing, unreserved
2:33:12
Speaker 10: passion for a man that at last must certainly leave
2:33:15
Speaker 10: or ruin her, and perhaps both then the aggravation of
2:33:19
Speaker 10: the distresses that she does not believe he will not.
2:33:23
Speaker 10: But I must own if they are both what they
2:33:26
Speaker 10: would seem. They are made for one another as much
2:33:30
Speaker 10: as Adam and Eve were, for there is no other
2:33:33
Speaker 10: of their kind but themselves. And to boy, so Daniel,
2:33:40
Speaker 10: what news with.
2:33:40
Speaker 8: You, madam? There a gentleman below would speak with my lady, sir.
2:33:47
Speaker 10: Don't you know mister Bevil.
2:33:49
Speaker 8: Yet, Madam, this is not the gentleman who comes every
2:33:52
Speaker 8: day and asks for you and won't go in till
2:33:55
Speaker 8: he knows whether.
2:33:56
Speaker 4: You are with her or no.
2:33:58
Speaker 10: Hah, that particular I did not know before. Well be
2:34:04
Speaker 10: it who it will? Let him come up to me?
2:34:07
Speaker 1: Exit boy and re enters with mister sealand Isabella looks amazed.
2:34:14
Speaker 2: Madam. I can't blame your being a little surprised to
2:34:17
Speaker 2: see a perfect stranger make a visit.
2:34:20
Speaker 10: And I am indeed surprised a side I see he
2:34:26
Speaker 10: does not know me.
2:34:28
Speaker 2: You are very prettily lodged here, Madam. In truth, it
2:34:32
Speaker 2: seems you have everything in.
2:34:34
Speaker 1: Plenty aside, and looking about.
2:34:38
Speaker 2: A thousand a year, I warrant you upon this pretty
2:34:41
Speaker 2: nest of rooms, and the deity one within them Isabella.
2:34:46
Speaker 10: Apart twenty years, it seems of less effect in the
2:34:51
Speaker 10: alteration of a man of thirty than of a girl
2:34:54
Speaker 10: of fourteen. He's almost still the same. But alas I
2:35:00
Speaker 10: find by other men as well as himself, I am
2:35:04
Speaker 10: not what I was. As soon as he spoke, I
2:35:08
Speaker 10: was convinced twas he. How shall I contain my surprise
2:35:12
Speaker 10: and satisfaction?
2:35:15
Speaker 2: He must not know me yet, Madam, I hope I
2:35:19
Speaker 2: don't give you any disturbance. But there is a young
2:35:22
Speaker 2: lady here with whom I have a particular business to discourse,
2:35:26
Speaker 2: and I hope she will admit me to that favor.
2:35:30
Speaker 10: Why, sir, have you had any notice concerning her? I
2:35:34
Speaker 10: wonder who could give it.
2:35:35
Speaker 2: You that madam is fit early to be communicated to herself?
2:35:41
Speaker 10: Well, sir, you shall see her aside. I find he
2:35:47
Speaker 10: knows nothing yet, nor shall from me. I am resolved.
2:35:52
Speaker 10: I will observe this interlude the sport of nature and
2:35:56
Speaker 10: of fortune. You shall see her presently, sir. For now
2:36:01
Speaker 10: I am as a mother, and will trust her with you.
2:36:04
Speaker 2: Exit as a mother. All right, that's the old phrase
2:36:10
Speaker 2: for one of these commoed ladies who lend out beauty
2:36:13
Speaker 2: for hire to young gentlemen that have pressing occasions. But
2:36:18
Speaker 2: here comes a precious lady herself in truth, a very
2:36:22
Speaker 2: sightly woman, enter Indiana.
2:36:26
Speaker 11: I am told, sir, you have some affair that requires
2:36:29
Speaker 11: your speaking with me.
2:36:31
Speaker 2: Yes, madam, they came to my hands a bill drawn
2:36:33
Speaker 2: by mister Bevell, which is payable to morrow, and he,
2:36:38
Speaker 2: in nearly course of business, sent it to me, who
2:36:41
Speaker 2: have cash of his, and desired me to send a
2:36:44
Speaker 2: servant with it. But I've made boud to bring you
2:36:47
Speaker 2: the money myself, sir.
2:36:50
Speaker 11: Was that necessary, no, madam?
2:36:53
Speaker 2: But to be free with you. The fame of your
2:36:56
Speaker 2: beauty and the regard which mister Bebell is a little
2:37:00
Speaker 2: who well known to have for you excited my curiosity.
2:37:04
Speaker 11: Too well known to have for me. Your sober appearance, sir,
2:37:08
Speaker 11: which my friend described, made me expect no rudeness or
2:37:12
Speaker 11: absurdity at least who's there?
2:37:14
Speaker 4: Sir?
2:37:15
Speaker 11: If you pay the money to a servant, twill be
2:37:17
Speaker 11: as well.
2:37:18
Speaker 2: Pray, madam, be not offended. I came hither on an
2:37:22
Speaker 2: innocent nay, a virtuous design, And if you will have
2:37:26
Speaker 2: patience to hear me, it may be as useful to
2:37:29
Speaker 2: you as you are in a friendship with mister bevill
2:37:33
Speaker 2: as to my early daughter, whom I was this day
2:37:36
Speaker 2: disposing of you.
2:37:38
Speaker 11: Make me hope, Sir, I have mistaken you. I am
2:37:41
Speaker 11: composed again. Be free, say on a sight what I
2:37:45
Speaker 11: am afraid to hear.
2:37:47
Speaker 2: I feared, indeed an unwarranted passion here, but I did
2:37:52
Speaker 2: not think it was an abuse of so worthy an object,
2:37:55
Speaker 2: so accomplished a lady, as your sense and mien bespeak.
2:38:00
Speaker 2: But the youth of our age care not what merit
2:38:02
Speaker 2: or virtue they bring to shame, should they gratify.
2:38:06
Speaker 11: Sir, you are going into very great errors. But as
2:38:09
Speaker 11: you are pleased to say, you see something in me
2:38:11
Speaker 11: that has changed at least the color of your suspicions.
2:38:15
Speaker 11: So has your appearance altered mine and made me earnestly
2:38:18
Speaker 11: attentive to what has any way concerned you to inquire
2:38:21
Speaker 11: into my affairs and character.
2:38:23
Speaker 2: How sensibly and with what an air she talks?
2:38:28
Speaker 11: Good sir, be seated, and tell me tenderly keep all
2:38:31
Speaker 11: your suspicions concerning me alive, that you may, in a
2:38:36
Speaker 11: proper and prepared way acquaint me. Why the care of
2:38:39
Speaker 11: your daughter obliges a person of your seeming worth and
2:38:42
Speaker 11: fortune to be thus inquisitive about a wretched, helpless friendless weeping.
2:38:50
Speaker 11: But I beg your pardon. Though I am an orphan,
2:38:54
Speaker 11: your child is not, and your concern for her, it seems,
2:38:59
Speaker 11: has hither I'll be composed pray.
2:39:03
Speaker 2: Go on, sir, How would mister Bevil be such a
2:39:06
Speaker 2: monster to injure such a woman?
2:39:09
Speaker 11: No, sir, you wrong him. He has not injured me.
2:39:13
Speaker 11: My support is from his bounty, bounty.
2:39:17
Speaker 2: When gluttons give high prices for delicates, they are prodigious, bountiful.
2:39:22
Speaker 11: Still still you will persist in that error. But my
2:39:26
Speaker 11: own fears tell me all you are the gentleman I suppose,
2:39:30
Speaker 11: for whose happy daughter he is designed a husband by
2:39:33
Speaker 11: his good father, And he has perhaps consented to the overture.
2:39:38
Speaker 11: He was here this morning dressed beyond his usual plainness,
2:39:41
Speaker 11: nay more sumptuously, and he is to be, perhaps this
2:39:45
Speaker 11: night a bridegroom.
2:39:47
Speaker 2: I own he was intended such. But Madam, on your account,
2:39:53
Speaker 2: I have determined to defer my daughter's marriage till I
2:39:56
Speaker 2: am satisfied from your own mouth of what nature are
2:39:59
Speaker 2: the the obligations you are under to him?
2:40:03
Speaker 11: His actions, Sir, his eyes have only made me think
2:40:06
Speaker 11: he designed to make me the partner of his heart.
2:40:09
Speaker 11: The goodness and gentleness of his demeanor made me misinterpret all,
2:40:13
Speaker 11: choose my own hope, my own passion that deluded me.
2:40:16
Speaker 11: He never made one amorous advance to me. His large
2:40:20
Speaker 11: heart and bestowing haunt have only helped them miserable. Nor
2:40:24
Speaker 11: know I why, but from his mere delight in virtue
2:40:28
Speaker 11: that I have been his care and the object on
2:40:30
Speaker 11: which to indulge and please himself with boring favors.
2:40:34
Speaker 2: Madam, I know not why it is, but I, as
2:40:38
Speaker 2: well as you am, methinks, afraid of entering into the
2:40:42
Speaker 2: matter I came about. But tis the same thing as
2:40:46
Speaker 2: if we had talked, never so distinctly. He ne'er shall
2:40:49
Speaker 2: have a daughter of mine.
2:40:52
Speaker 11: If you say this from what you think of me,
2:40:54
Speaker 11: you wrong yourself and him. Let not me miserable, though
2:40:58
Speaker 11: I may be doing injury to my benefactor. No, Sir,
2:41:02
Speaker 11: my treatment ought rather to reconcile you to his virtues.
2:41:06
Speaker 11: If to bestow without a prospect of return, if to
2:41:09
Speaker 11: delight in supporting what might perhaps be thought an object
2:41:13
Speaker 11: of desire, with no other view than to be her
2:41:16
Speaker 11: guard against those who would not be so disinterested. If
2:41:20
Speaker 11: this action, Sir can, in a careful parent's eye, commend
2:41:23
Speaker 11: him to a daughter, Give yours, sir, give her to
2:41:27
Speaker 11: my honest, generous bevil. What have I to do but
2:41:30
Speaker 11: sigh and weep and rave, run wild a lunatic in chains,
2:41:36
Speaker 11: or hid in darkness, mutter in destructed starts and broken accents,
2:41:40
Speaker 11: my strange, strange.
2:41:42
Speaker 2: Story de comfort, madam?
2:41:46
Speaker 11: All my comfort must be to expostulate in madness, to
2:41:49
Speaker 11: relieve with friends, in my despair and shrieking, to demand
2:41:53
Speaker 11: of fate? Why why was I born to such variety
2:41:57
Speaker 11: of sorrows?
2:41:58
Speaker 2: If I have been the occasion, no.
2:42:02
Speaker 11: Twas Heaven's high will, I should be such to be
2:42:05
Speaker 11: plundered in my cradle, tossed on the seas, and even
2:42:09
Speaker 11: there an infant captive to lose my mother here but
2:42:14
Speaker 11: of my father to be adopted, lose my adopter, then
2:42:18
Speaker 11: plunged again into worse calamities.
2:42:21
Speaker 2: Had infant captive?
2:42:23
Speaker 11: Yet then to find the most charming of mankind once
2:42:27
Speaker 11: more to set me free from what I thought the
2:42:29
Speaker 11: last distress, to load me with his services, his bounties,
2:42:34
Speaker 11: and his favors, to support my very life in a
2:42:37
Speaker 11: way that stall at the same time my very solid
2:42:41
Speaker 11: self from me.
2:42:43
Speaker 2: But has young Bevil been this worthy man?
2:42:46
Speaker 4: Yet?
2:42:47
Speaker 11: Then again, this very man to take another without leaving
2:42:51
Speaker 11: me the right the pretence of easing my fond heart
2:42:54
Speaker 11: with tears, for oh, I can't reproach him, though the
2:42:59
Speaker 11: same and that raised me to this height now throws
2:43:03
Speaker 11: me down the precipice.
2:43:05
Speaker 2: Dear lady, Oh, yet one moment's patience. My heart grows
2:43:11
Speaker 2: full with your affliction. But yet there's something in your
2:43:15
Speaker 2: story that my.
2:43:16
Speaker 11: Portion here is bitterness and sorrow.
2:43:19
Speaker 2: Do not think so?
2:43:21
Speaker 8: Pray?
2:43:21
Speaker 2: Answer me? Does bebel know your name and family alas too?
2:43:27
Speaker 4: Well?
2:43:28
Speaker 11: Could I be any other thing than what I am?
2:43:31
Speaker 11: I'll tear away all traces of my former self, my
2:43:35
Speaker 11: little ornaments, the remains of my first state, the hints
2:43:39
Speaker 11: of what I owe to have.
2:43:40
Speaker 1: Been in her disorder. She throws away a bracelet, which
2:43:45
Speaker 1: Celen takes up and looks earnestly on it.
2:43:49
Speaker 2: Ah, what's this? My eyes are not deceived.
2:43:54
Speaker 11: It is.
2:43:54
Speaker 2: It is the same, the very bracelet which I bequeathed
2:43:58
Speaker 2: to my wife. But allah mournful parting.
2:44:02
Speaker 11: What said you, sir, your wife? Whither does my fancy
2:44:06
Speaker 11: carry me? What means this unfelt motion at my heart?
2:44:11
Speaker 11: And yet again my fortune but deludes me? For if
2:44:16
Speaker 11: I are not, sir, your name is Silant. But my
2:44:20
Speaker 11: lost father's name was Danvers.
2:44:23
Speaker 4: Was it not?
2:44:24
Speaker 11: What new amazement? That is indeed my family?
2:44:28
Speaker 18: Now?
2:44:29
Speaker 2: Then, when my misfortunes drew me to the Indies, the
2:44:33
Speaker 2: reasons too tedious now to mention, I changed my name
2:44:36
Speaker 2: of Danvers into Sealand and to Isabella.
2:44:41
Speaker 10: If yet there wants an explanation of your wonder, examine
2:44:45
Speaker 10: Welvi's face, yours, sir, I well remember gaze on and
2:44:51
Speaker 10: reading me your sister Isabella, my sister. But here's a
2:44:57
Speaker 10: claim more tender. Yet you're Indie Anna, sir, your long
2:45:01
Speaker 10: lost daughter.
2:45:03
Speaker 2: Oh my child, my child.
2:45:07
Speaker 11: All grashus heaven? Is it possible? Do I embrace my father?
2:45:12
Speaker 2: And I do hold thee These passions are too strong
2:45:16
Speaker 2: for utterance. Rise, rise, my child, and give my tears
2:45:22
Speaker 2: their way, Oh my sister, embracing her.
2:45:28
Speaker 10: Now dearest niece, My groundless fears, my painful cares, no
2:45:34
Speaker 10: more shall vex THEE. If I have wronged thy noble
2:45:37
Speaker 10: lover with too much suspicion, my just concern for THEE,
2:45:41
Speaker 10: I hope will plead my pardon.
2:45:45
Speaker 2: Oh, make him then the full amends, and be yourself
2:45:49
Speaker 2: the messenger of joy. Fly this instant. Tell him all
2:45:53
Speaker 2: these wondrous tons of providence in his favor. Tell him
2:45:57
Speaker 2: I have now a daughter to bestow, which he no
2:46:00
Speaker 2: longer will decline that this day he still shall be
2:46:04
Speaker 2: a bridegroom, Nor shall a fortune the merit which his
2:46:08
Speaker 2: father seeks be wanting. Tell him the reward of all
2:46:12
Speaker 2: his virtues waits on his acceptance. Exitisabella, my dearest Indiana,
2:46:19
Speaker 2: turns and embraces her.
2:46:22
Speaker 11: Have I then, at last a father's sanction on my love,
2:46:26
Speaker 11: his bunch's hunt to give and make my heart a
2:46:29
Speaker 11: present worthy of Beaviel's generosity?
2:46:32
Speaker 2: Oh, my child, how are our sorrows passed or paid
2:46:37
Speaker 2: by such a meeting? Though I have lost so many
2:46:40
Speaker 2: years of soft paternal dealings with THEE, Yet in one
2:46:44
Speaker 2: day to find THEE thus and thus bestow THEE in
2:46:48
Speaker 2: such perfect happiness is ample, ample reparation. And yet again
2:46:55
Speaker 2: the merit of thy lover, Oh.
2:46:57
Speaker 11: Hard eyed spirits left to tell you of his actions,
2:47:00
Speaker 11: how strongly filial duty has suppressed his love, and how
2:47:04
Speaker 11: counselment still has doubled all his obligations. The pride, the
2:47:09
Speaker 11: joy of his alliance, Sir, would warm your heart as
2:47:12
Speaker 11: he has conquered mine.
2:47:15
Speaker 2: How laudable is love when born a virtue. I burned
2:47:19
Speaker 2: to embrace him.
2:47:21
Speaker 11: See, Sir, my aunt already has succeeded and brought him
2:47:24
Speaker 11: to your wishes.
2:47:26
Speaker 1: Enter Isabella with Sir John Bevill, Bevillgunior Missus sealand Symbatot
2:47:32
Speaker 1: Metal and Lucinda. Sir John Bevill entering.
2:47:37
Speaker 14: Where where is this scene of wonder? Mister Sealand I
2:47:42

2:47:48
Speaker 14: has with the story of your daughter's fortune, Phildus with
2:47:51
Speaker 14: surprise and joy. Now all exceptions are removed. My son
2:47:56
Speaker 14: has now avowed his love and turned all former jealous
2:48:00
Speaker 14: endoweds to approbation. And I am told your Goodness has
2:48:04
Speaker 14: consented to reward him if.
2:48:07
Speaker 2: Sir, a fortune equal to his father's hopes can make
2:48:10
Speaker 2: this object worthy his acceptance.
2:48:13
Speaker 3: I hear your mentions, Sir, A fortune with pleasure only
2:48:17
Speaker 3: as it may prove the means to reconcile the best
2:48:19
Speaker 3: of fathers to my love. Let him be provident, but
2:48:23
Speaker 3: let me be happy, my ever destined, my acknowledged.
2:48:27
Speaker 1: Wife, embracing Indiana.
2:48:30
Speaker 11: Wife, Oh, my ever loved, my lord, my master.
2:48:36
Speaker 14: I congratulate myself as well as you that I had
2:48:39
Speaker 14: a son who could, under such disadvantages, discover your great merit.
2:48:44
Speaker 2: Oh, sir John, how vain? How weak is human prudence?
2:48:50
Speaker 2: What care? What foresight? What imagination could contrive such blessed
2:48:55
Speaker 2: events to make out children happy? As providence? In one
2:48:59
Speaker 2: sh sho? What hour has laid before us?
2:49:02
Speaker 1: Simpleton?
2:49:03
Speaker 5: To missus Sealand, I am afraid, ma'am, mister Sealand is
2:49:09
Speaker 5: a little too busy for our affair. If you please,
2:49:14
Speaker 5: we'll take another opportunity. Let us have patience, sir, But
2:49:20
Speaker 5: we make Sir Jeffrey wait, ma'am, Oh sir, I am
2:49:24
Speaker 5: not in haste.
2:49:26
Speaker 1: During this devil Junior presents Liscinda to Indiana.
2:49:31
Speaker 2: But here here's our general benefactor, excellent young man, They
2:49:36
Speaker 2: could at once be a lover to her beauty and
2:49:39
Speaker 2: a parent to her virtue.
2:49:41
Speaker 3: If you think that an obligation, Sir, give me leave
2:49:45
Speaker 3: to overpay myself in the only instance that can now
2:49:49
Speaker 3: add to my felicity. By begging you now to bestow
2:49:53
Speaker 3: this lady on mister Myrtle.
2:49:55
Speaker 2: She is his without reserve. I beg you me be
2:49:59
Speaker 2: sent for, mister Simberton, notwithstanding you never had my consent.
2:50:04
Speaker 2: Yet there is since I last saw you, another objection
2:50:08
Speaker 2: to your marriage with my daughter.
2:50:10
Speaker 5: I hope, sir, your lady has concealed nothing from me.
2:50:16
Speaker 2: Truths are nothing but what was concealed from myself another
2:50:21
Speaker 2: daughter who has an undoubted title to half my estate?
2:50:26
Speaker 5: How mister sealand why then, if half missus Lucinda's fortune
2:50:33
Speaker 5: is gone, you can't say that any of my estate
2:50:37
Speaker 5: is settled upon her. I was entreaty for the whole,
2:50:43
Speaker 5: but if that is not to be come at, to
2:50:47
Speaker 5: be sure, there can be no bargain, Sir. I have
2:50:52
Speaker 5: nothing to do but take my leave of your good lady,
2:50:57
Speaker 5: my cousin, and beg pardon for the trouble. I have
2:51:01
Speaker 5: given this old gentleman.
2:51:04
Speaker 4: That you have, Mister Simberton, with all my heart.
2:51:08
Speaker 1: Myrtle discovers himself, mister, mister.
2:51:15
Speaker 4: Myrtle, and I beg pardon of the whole company that
2:51:18
Speaker 4: I assume the person of Sir Jeffrey only to be
2:51:21
Speaker 4: present at the danger of this lady being disposed of
2:51:24
Speaker 4: and in her utmost exigence to assert my rights to her, which,
2:51:28
Speaker 4: if her parents will ratify as they once favored my pretensions,
2:51:31
Speaker 4: no abatement of fortune shall lessen her value to me.
2:51:35
Speaker 2: Generous man, if sir you can overlook the injury of
2:51:39
Speaker 2: being entreaty with one who has meanly left her, as
2:51:43
Speaker 2: you have generously asserted your right in her, she is yours.
2:51:48
Speaker 8: Mister Myrtle.
2:51:49
Speaker 12: Though you have ever had my heart, yet now I
2:51:52
Speaker 12: find I love you more because I bring you less.
2:51:55
Speaker 4: We have much more than we want, and I am
2:51:58
Speaker 4: glad any event has contributed to the discovery of our
2:52:01
Speaker 4: real inclinations to each other.
2:52:04
Speaker 9: Missus celand aside well, however, I'm glad the girls disposed
2:52:10
Speaker 9: of anyway.
2:52:12
Speaker 3: Myrtle no longer rivals now.
2:52:15
Speaker 4: But Brothers, dear Bevil, you are born to triumph over me.
2:52:20
Speaker 4: But now our competition ceases. I rejoice in the pre
2:52:23
Speaker 4: eminence of your virtue. And your alliance adds charms to Lucinda.
2:52:28
Speaker 14: Now, ladies and gentlemen, you have set the world a
2:52:32
Speaker 14: fair example. Your happiness is owing to your constancy and merit,
2:52:36
Speaker 14: and the several difficulties you have struggled with evidently show
2:52:40
Speaker 14: whate'er the generous mind itself denies the secret care of
2:52:45
Speaker 14: providence supplies excellent epilook.

Speaker 11: Our author, Whoman treatise cannot move spite of the dear
2:52:55

2:53:00
Speaker 11: means by a loose epilogue his decent scenes, Is it not,
2:53:05
Speaker 11: sir as hard fate? I meet to day to keep
2:53:08
Speaker 11: me reach it still beyond the play, And yet I'm
2:53:11
Speaker 11: saved a world of pains that way I now can look.
2:53:15
Speaker 11: I now can move at ease. Nor need I torture
2:53:19
Speaker 11: these poor limbs to please, nor with a hand or
2:53:22
Speaker 11: foot attempt surprise, nor rest my features, nor fatigue my
2:53:27
Speaker 11: eyes bless me? What freakish gambols have I played? What
2:53:31
Speaker 11: motions tried and want and looks betrayed out of pure kindness,
2:53:35
Speaker 11: all to overrule the threatened hiss and screen some scribbling
2:53:40
Speaker 11: full with more respect im entertained. Tonight are other things
2:53:45
Speaker 11: I can with ease delight my artless looks, while modest
2:53:50
Speaker 11: Grace's arm, He says, I need but to appear in charm.

Speaker 11: A wife so formed by these examples bred pours joy
