- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it's Tuesday, it's the 14th
- 0:16of October. Thank you for tapping on play
- 0:18and inviting me into this very fast day.
- 0:22You may not know, but this day, October 14 in 1947 was actually
- 0:28the very first time that humans managed to break the sound
- 0:32barrier. The first person in this in this
- 0:35aeroplane called the glamorous Glenys.
- 0:37Good for you Glenys. And then many years later,
- 0:40actually remember this. In 2012, there was this guy
- 0:43named Felix Baumgartner, what a last name, who jumped from space
- 0:4939 kilometres above the surface of the Earth, and he skydived
- 0:53all the way down and he actually broke the sound barrier with his
- 0:56body, which is truly bananas to think that someone just flying
- 1:01unsurrounded by any kind of technology went that fast.
- 1:04But that's what happens when there's no oxygen or air around
- 1:07you, I guess. So today, today is a day for
- 1:09fast movement, right? And then you've taken this
- 1:14moment to stop the fast movement of your day and come with me and
- 1:19read God's words. So Holy Spirit, as we pause
- 1:23still our hearts and open them to you and the gift of the life
- 1:29that we have to live in you in the Spirit, and how different
- 1:34that is from any other way of living.
- 1:38So open our hearts and reveal yourself to us.
- 1:43Alright friends, let's do it. Let us read together Romans
- 1:46chapter 8. So now there is no condemnation
- 1:59for those who belong to Christ Jesus.
- 2:02And because you belong to him, the power of the life giving
- 2:06Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to
- 2:09death. The Law of Moses was unable to
- 2:12save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature.
- 2:16So God did what the Law could not do.
- 2:19He sent His own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have.
- 2:25And in that body God declared an end to sins control over us by
- 2:31giving His Son as a sacrifice for our sins.
- 2:34He did this so that the just requirements of the Law could be
- 2:38fully satisfied for us who no longer follow our sinful nature,
- 2:42but instead follow the Spirit. Those who are dominated by the
- 2:48sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are
- 2:51controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please
- 2:55the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature
- 2:58control your minds leads to death, but letting the Spirit
- 3:03controlled your mind leads to life and peace.
- 3:07For the sinful nature is always hostile to God.
- 3:10It never did obey God's laws, and it never will.
- 3:15That's why those who are still under the control of their
- 3:17sinful nature can never please God.
- 3:22But you are not controlled by your sinful nature.
- 3:26You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God
- 3:30living in you. And remember that those who do
- 3:33not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to
- 3:37him at all. And Christ lives within you.
- 3:41So even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit
- 3:45gives you life because you have been made right with God.
- 3:50The Spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead lives in
- 3:54you. And just as God raised Christ
- 3:57Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies
- 4:02by this same Spirit living within you.
- 4:06Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation
- 4:11to do what your sinful nature urges you to do.
- 4:15For if you live by its dictates, you will die.
- 4:19But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the
- 4:22deeds of your sinful nature, you will live.
- 4:26For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of
- 4:30God. So you have not received a
- 4:32spirit that makes you fearful slaves.
- 4:35Instead, you receive God's Spirit when He adopted you as
- 4:39His own children. Now we call him ABBA Father, for
- 4:45his Spirit joins with our Spirit to affirm that we are God's
- 4:50children. And since we are his children,
- 4:54we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ,
- 4:57we are heirs of God's glory. But if we are to share his
- 5:01glory, we must also share his suffering.
- 5:06Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he
- 5:10will reveal to us later. For all creation is waiting
- 5:15eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who his children
- 5:20really are against His will. All creation was subjected to
- 5:25God's curse. But with eager hope the creation
- 5:29looks forward to the day when it will join God's children in
- 5:33glorious freedom from death and decay.
- 5:36For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the
- 5:40pains of childbirth right up to the present time.
- 5:44And we believers also grown even though we have the Holy Spirit
- 5:48within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for
- 5:53our bodies to be released from sin and suffering.
- 5:57We too wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us
- 6:02our full rights as His adopted children, including the new
- 6:07bodies He has promised us. We were given this hope when we
- 6:11were saved. If we already have something, we
- 6:15don't need to hope for it. But if we look forward to
- 6:18something we don't yet have, we must wait patiently and
- 6:22confidently. And the Holy Spirit helps us in
- 6:26our weakness. For example, we don't know what
- 6:29God wants us to pray, but the Holy Spirit prays for us with
- 6:34groanings that cannot be expressed in words.
- 6:38And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is
- 6:42saying. For the Spirit pleads for us
- 6:45believers in harmony with God's own will.
- 6:50And we know that God causes everything to work together for
- 6:54the good of those who love God and are called according to His
- 6:58purpose for them. For God knew His people in
- 7:02advance, and He chose them to become like His Son, so that His
- 7:07Son would be the first born among many brothers and sisters.
- 7:12And having chosen them, He called them to come to Him.
- 7:16And having called them, He gave them right standing with
- 7:20Himself. And having given them right
- 7:23standing, He gave them His glory.
- 7:28What shall we say about such wonderful things as these?
- 7:34If God is for us, who can ever be against us?
- 7:39Since He did not spare even His own Son, but gave Him up for us
- 7:43all, won't He also give us everything else?
- 7:48Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for His own?
- 7:53No one, for God Himself has given us right standing with
- 7:57Himself. Who will then condemn us?
- 8:00No one for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for
- 8:05us, and he is sitting in the place of honour at God's right
- 8:09hand pleading for us. Can anything ever separate us
- 8:14from Christ's love? Does it mean he no longer loves
- 8:18us? If we have trouble or calamity,
- 8:20or a persecuted or hungry or destitute or in danger or
- 8:25threatened with death, as the Scriptures say, for your sake,
- 8:29we are killed every day. We are being slaughtered like
- 8:33sheep. No, despite all these things,
- 8:38overwhelming victory is ours through Christ who loved us.
- 8:45And I'm convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's
- 8:50love. Neither death nor life, neither
- 8:54angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries
- 8:59about tomorrow, not even the powers of hell can separate us
- 9:03from God's love. No power in the sky above or in
- 9:08the earth below, indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be
- 9:14able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in
- 9:18Christ Jesus our Lord. Oh Jesus, in you we have this
- 9:32rock solid assurance that our identity is absolutely ironclad,
- 9:40that the God of the universe looks at us with favour and love
- 9:45and his preference, and nothing can ever strip that away.
- 9:51Nothing in that long list that Paul writes of these incredibly
- 9:54scary things like death and demons or the worry about
- 9:58tomorrow or the powers of hell. Nothing can ever separate us
- 10:04from this incredibly transformative love that you
- 10:07have for us. Oh man, what an incredible gift
- 10:12you give us. As we go about our day to day,
- 10:19Jesus, continue to remind us, continue to prompt us.
- 10:22Holy Spirit, keep us ever in the sure knowledge of our firm
- 10:28footing and our foundation in you and who we are and the
- 10:32victory we already have in You, so that no challenge that is
- 10:37thrown at us today will shake us.
- 10:40That no criticism will make us doubt that.
- 10:44That no challenge will make us despair because we are saved and
- 10:49we stand in glory with You. Oh, what an incredible gift we
- 10:53have. And you are our deposit, Jesus,
- 10:57our deposit that says full payment is coming, full payment
- 11:01when we stand beside you in glory.
- 11:05Ah, we are so grateful for all of this and we love you.
- 11:08And we pray all of this in your incredible name, Jesus, Amen.
