Latest / Foul Territory / Buck Showalter’s Trade Deadline reax, JJ Cooper on prospect returns
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: And i'd show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Data dish is presented by Rapsodo. Here is JJ Cooper
- 0:11Speaker 2: from Baseball America. Let's start with the freshest trade here,
- 0:14Speaker 2: Jefferson Rojas. JJ tell us what the Mets are getting
- 0:17Speaker 2: back in this deal for Clay Holmes and Tyron Taylor.
- 0:21Speaker 3: Very back of the top hundred prospected guy who's kind
- 0:23Speaker 3: of been hovering in that on the top hundred, just
- 0:25Speaker 3: off the top hundred range for a while. Now, this
- 0:29Speaker 3: is what the Cubs are doing here to talk for
- 0:31Speaker 3: their side is they are trading guys who have real
- 0:34Speaker 3: value but also probably do not fit for the Cubs.
- 0:38Speaker 3: We saw that you mentioned Basilsterras I a would say
- 0:40Speaker 3: the same thing. Kind of Jefferson Rojas. They had Jefferson Rojas,
- 0:43Speaker 3: they have paid Road Ramirez. They're kind of two guys
- 0:45Speaker 3: to be who are very similar, I would say as
- 0:48Speaker 3: far as how they would fit on the big league club.
- 0:50Speaker 4: For the Cubs. Okay, so you trade one of them.
- 0:53Speaker 4: Rojas has real value.
- 0:54Speaker 3: I think when you say were of the Mes getting film,
- 0:56Speaker 3: that's a guy who you know is a legitimate middle dfielder.
- 0:59Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:00Speaker 3: I think he's kind of on that fringe of is
- 1:01Speaker 3: he going to be an everyday shortstop? I'm I'm not
- 1:04Speaker 3: so sure about that. But is he going to play second?
- 1:06Speaker 3: Can he play some short maybe some third? Have real
- 1:09Speaker 3: value with the bat? Like he's again, he's a solid prospect,
- 1:12Speaker 3: He's a solid acquisition. But you go down the rest
- 1:14Speaker 3: of these Cubs moves, Jonathan Long wasn't going to play
- 1:16Speaker 3: for them. I think that with Liam Hicks being traded,
- 1:19Speaker 3: he might just go straight into the Marlins lineup as
- 1:21Speaker 3: their first base. And we mentioned Ballis Scaris. There's a
- 1:24Speaker 3: number of these guys who I think have real value
- 1:27Speaker 3: in trade. We've seen that today. But at the same time,
- 1:29Speaker 3: they're not guys that the Cubs necessarily should rue giving
- 1:32Speaker 3: up because they often in many cases have better players
- 1:35Speaker 3: than them on their big leag roster.
- 1:36Speaker 5: Right now, j J, let's talk about USA Baseball here
- 1:39Speaker 5: for a second. Oh wait, yeah, just kidding. I just
- 1:43Speaker 5: wanted to see Scott's reaction. He's telling me, you have
- 1:46Speaker 5: to stay on task here, and I'm so good at
- 1:48Speaker 5: staying on task. Do they come so many players left
- 1:51Speaker 5: because they made the trade for GOLs. When they made
- 1:53Speaker 5: the trade for Zephyr John. They're making all these moves.
- 1:56Speaker 5: Do they have any prospects left? Because I only thought teams,
- 1:59Speaker 5: you know, all team have thirty prospects. I feel like
- 2:01Speaker 5: they've traded all thirty away.
- 2:03Speaker 3: The funny thing about it is, I don't think, okay,
- 2:05Speaker 3: grow we had row houses. They are number two, But
- 2:07Speaker 3: the most important guy they have is Josiah Hartshorn and
- 2:09Speaker 3: they've kept him.
- 2:10Speaker 6: That's the guy.
- 2:10Speaker 3: That's the one guy I would say you don't trade right.
- 2:12Speaker 3: This is the guy who's a potentially premium you know bat.
- 2:16Speaker 3: This is a corner outfielder, but one who really can't
- 2:19Speaker 3: swing it. Had a breakthrough season this year. That's the
- 2:21Speaker 3: guy you don't want to give up. I've Katan Kepley's
- 2:24Speaker 3: a center fielder. I wouldn't be shocked even to see
- 2:26Speaker 3: if is Owen Air is going to get to go
- 2:28Speaker 3: get traded. We talked about Ballistaiirs. Ballistairs isn't a catcher realistically.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Owen AIIRs is a catcher and has had really a
- 2:34Speaker 3: breakthrough season. That's the guy who partly also though with
- 2:38Speaker 3: them trading Ballisterio's, I would say that owen Aires has
- 2:40Speaker 3: a better path to being a big league catcher for
- 2:43Speaker 3: the Cubs than Ballistaios did.
- 2:47Speaker 7: All right, what about the Cardinals return for the trade
- 2:50Speaker 7: that they made?
- 2:52Speaker 3: Okay, that's the trade. If you asked me a team
- 2:55Speaker 3: that's selling and I just love the return, that's the return, right,
- 2:58Speaker 3: Dustin made Jojo Rovera not saying they're not good, but
- 3:01Speaker 3: Alexander Friez is the guy we talked about. Rojas has
- 3:03Speaker 3: been on the kind of very edge of our top hundred.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Fries was on our hundred when we updated in July.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Guy who had a great year in the DSL last year,
- 3:10Speaker 3: I had a monster year in the Complex and then
- 3:12Speaker 3: just got promoted to low A. This is an eighteen
- 3:15Speaker 3: year old with I would describe it as kind of
- 3:17Speaker 3: like Junior Camonaro level power. Now, a lot of guys
- 3:20Speaker 3: at eighteen who have Junior Camonaro level power don't end
- 3:23Speaker 3: up being Junior Camenero. But he has that kind of
- 3:27Speaker 3: could hit thirty for thirty five homer power, you know,
- 3:29Speaker 3: potential if everything comes together. Long boys away, far away,
- 3:33Speaker 3: but you take a flyer on that and a move
- 3:35Speaker 3: like this, and then Josiah Ragsdale they also got, I think,
- 3:39Speaker 3: is a guy who if he was in another system,
- 3:42Speaker 3: we'd be talking about him all years, like, wow, is
- 3:44Speaker 3: this one of the top five, top six, top seven
- 3:46Speaker 3: prospects in a system. It's the Brewers. So it's like, hey,
- 3:50Speaker 3: he's a Brewers prospects having a great year. And he said,
- 3:51Speaker 3: what do you mean Andrew Fischer who leeds the miners
- 3:53Speaker 3: and home runs?
- 3:54Speaker 6: No?
- 3:54Speaker 3: Do you mean Blake Burke who's gonna have a thirty
- 3:56Speaker 3: thirty season as a first baseman. No, I mean Ragsdale
- 3:59Speaker 3: who's had a twenty double. He has nineteen hovers up
- 4:02Speaker 3: twenty soon thirty steel season, And there's real power there.
- 4:05Speaker 3: He's made massive power games this year. When I watch
- 4:08Speaker 3: him hit, the thing that just stands out is is
- 4:10Speaker 3: he hits fly balls that you think are going to
- 4:12Speaker 3: be about, you know, ten feet from the you know,
- 4:14Speaker 3: from the warning track, and the outfitters keeps drifting back
- 4:16Speaker 3: and drifting back, and then he realizes that the wall
- 4:18Speaker 3: and looks up and goes, oh, it's a homer. And
- 4:20Speaker 3: he did that ten home runs in July. You could
- 4:22Speaker 3: say that the Brewers may be selling a little bit high,
- 4:24Speaker 3: but I do think there's real potential that this guy
- 4:26Speaker 3: could continue to do this. Going forward and center fielder too,
- 4:29Speaker 3: probably a corner in the feat in the future, but
- 4:31Speaker 3: could play center in a pinch and can run as well.
- 4:34Speaker 5: Apparently the Tigers didn't think these guys are very good
- 4:37Speaker 5: because you know, school ball instead of Dustin Man Jojo Romeira.
- 4:40Speaker 7: I don't know, j J.
- 4:41Speaker 5: Seems seems strange to me that, you know, if these
- 4:43Speaker 5: guys are so good that apparently the Tigers hated him,
- 4:46Speaker 5: so that's why they went with dust and man Jojo Romeiro.
- 4:48Speaker 5: No knock, no knock on those guys. But you know,
- 4:50Speaker 5: Terrek Schouogl, I'm just just just just just spitball in
- 4:54Speaker 5: the here.
- 4:55Speaker 3: That is it, Logan Henderson, is that they didn't like Again,
- 4:59Speaker 3: that's the question is It's like if you said how
- 5:01Speaker 3: it would be a difficult fit. And again I don't
- 5:03Speaker 3: have reporting on this, I don't want make clear, but
- 5:05Speaker 3: if the Tigers were like, we need a pitcher who
- 5:08Speaker 3: we feel like will be in our rotation all next
- 5:11Speaker 3: year and really, you know, being potentially impactful, that's where
- 5:15Speaker 3: the Brewers might have had a little bit more trouble
- 5:16Speaker 3: because again I don't think you know, if you don't
- 5:18Speaker 3: want to trade Logan Henderson, then that becomes a little
- 5:21Speaker 3: bit tougher to you want to find a fit. But yeah,
- 5:23Speaker 3: I do agree that the Brewers obviously have enough prospect
- 5:26Speaker 3: potential that they should be a way to make a deal.
- 5:29Speaker 5: I mean, River Ryan has a pitch in two years,
- 5:30Speaker 5: but never mind, jj You know, there's no counting on
- 5:33Speaker 5: him being in the rotation next year.
- 5:34Speaker 1: But Logan Henderson is going to be Logan.
- 5:36Speaker 5: He is going to keep you from getting Trek's scuba.
- 5:38Speaker 5: I'm sorry, sorry.
- 5:40Speaker 2: It's gonna be twenty eighty nine and we're gonna be like,
- 5:41Speaker 2: you know, the Brewers could have won the World Series
- 5:43Speaker 2: in twenty twenty six, but Logan Henderson.
- 5:46Speaker 5: Sorry, don't offense the Logan Henderson just loco.
- 5:49Speaker 1: I believe in you. But that prevents Trek Scoogle.
- 5:54Speaker 5: Yeah true, But anyways, jj W other prospects. The apparently
- 5:58Speaker 5: the return that the Orioles got for Adley is the
- 6:02Speaker 5: greatest return in the last thirty years, according to some executive.
- 6:06Speaker 5: Is this true that it's the greatest return ever in
- 6:08Speaker 5: the last thirty years?
- 6:12Speaker 4: One Sota was traded, right, I don't know.
- 6:14Speaker 3: I'm just saying that's what like if you said one
- 6:18Speaker 3: Soto was traded for CJ. Abrams, James Wood, McKenzie Gore,
- 6:22Speaker 3: and Harlan Susannah and Robert Haslo didn't turn out. I
- 6:26Speaker 3: struggle to come up with a prospect return better than that.
- 6:29Speaker 3: That is a guy who could win the MVP. Another
- 6:32Speaker 3: guy who is the all star starting r star shortstop
- 6:35Speaker 3: I believe for the National League this year. Another guy
- 6:37Speaker 3: who is a mid rotation starter who was then turned
- 6:39Speaker 3: around this year and traded in another big deal. And
- 6:41Speaker 3: a guy who's still the miners but throws one hundred
- 6:43Speaker 3: and two and could end up being a very impactful
- 6:45Speaker 3: Big leaguer.
- 6:47Speaker 5: Okay, so you disagree, I would say, again it's a
- 6:50Speaker 5: good return, but it's hard to beat that.
- 6:52Speaker 3: I mean that that return is and yes, at the
- 6:54Speaker 3: Asacar better be an absolute stud down.
- 6:58Speaker 4: The road for the beat to beat that return.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Okay, that's fair. So all right, So do you think
- 7:02Speaker 5: what they gave up here? I mean, do you think
- 7:05Speaker 5: what the red Soux gave up is that a lot
- 7:07Speaker 5: for Adli Rushman?
- 7:10Speaker 3: It's a lot unless Adelie Rushman comes back healthy quickly.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Like again, this is one of those things I am
- 7:15Speaker 3: one who says, like I know, I cover prospects, and
- 7:18Speaker 3: that's what I do. But I absolutely get not being
- 7:21Speaker 3: a prospect hugger at this time of year, right because
- 7:24Speaker 3: if you run the numbers on this, and I try
- 7:26Speaker 3: to do that, when you say, like, okay, even they
- 7:28Speaker 3: got you know, they got as we see it, they
- 7:30Speaker 3: got a top fifty prospect in Anianssen, in uh Anthony Einsen,
- 7:35Speaker 3: they got a back of the top hundred right on
- 7:37Speaker 3: that frames Alexander Fries and him no different. I mean
- 7:40Speaker 3: that like ones, you know, ninety seven ones, one oh one,
- 7:43Speaker 3: same thing basically. And I would say that Indy Aslakar,
- 7:46Speaker 3: we're kind of trending towards that he was getting closer
- 7:49Speaker 3: and closer to Kyson Witherspoon. How we would line those
- 7:51Speaker 3: guys up as well. But if you said you're getting
- 7:54Speaker 3: a thirty five to you know, thirty to fifty prospect
- 7:58Speaker 3: and two fringes of the top hundred prospects, if one
- 8:01Speaker 3: of those guys ends up being a ten more player,
- 8:05Speaker 3: you know, for his career, that would be a great return.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Two would be an outstanding return. Prospects when these trades
- 8:12Speaker 3: like there, if you get a solid regular and you
- 8:16Speaker 3: get someone else who's a useful role player, even in
- 8:19Speaker 3: a deal like this, that's generally kind of the return
- 8:21Speaker 3: you get.

- 8:32Speaker 5: So you know what I'll do.
- 8:33Speaker 7: I'll do the next best thing for.

- 9:22Speaker 2: the business of insurance.
- 9:24Speaker 7: Before we get to the next return, I heard you
- 9:26Speaker 7: say it on hotsheet, What would you say the percentage
- 9:29Speaker 7: of these guys that get traded become impactful big leaguers
- 9:34Speaker 7: because you have top one hundred numbers. You still have
- 9:37Speaker 7: the top one hundred numbers because you're just talking about
- 9:40Speaker 7: them in another organization. So it's not like you're sitting
- 9:43Speaker 7: here going, oh, now, we're losing all our prospects.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Right, So I tried to run some numbers on this.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Basically I'm trying to find them right now, so I
- 9:53Speaker 3: don't misquote them. But basically what you kind of find
- 9:56Speaker 3: this is so the thing that's important kind of on
- 9:59Speaker 3: all of this is is that over and over when
- 10:01Speaker 3: you talk about these kind of deals, one of the
- 10:04Speaker 3: things that happens is is that there is such a
- 10:08Speaker 3: difference between that top The reason we're not seeing the
- 10:12Speaker 3: Jesus Madaes the you know, the hoseway Topaula is traded.
- 10:17Speaker 4: The success rate.
- 10:18Speaker 3: Really does kind of steadily decline even as you go
- 10:21Speaker 3: down the top hundred. Right if you're talking about top
- 10:23Speaker 3: ten prospect in baseball, you're talking about top three prospect
- 10:27Speaker 3: in baseball.
- 10:28Speaker 4: My expectation is that guy is.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Going to be a long time, successful regular and all star, right,
- 10:35Speaker 3: And it doesn't always work out that way.
- 10:37Speaker 4: But a lot of the time.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Does you get to top ten and you're talking about
- 10:41Speaker 3: still a really good chance to see that and a
- 10:43Speaker 3: really good chance to get a regular. By the time
- 10:45Speaker 3: you get about fifty on the list, now you're talking
- 10:47Speaker 3: to like it's a coin flip toss, you know, chance.
- 10:49Speaker 3: And then by the time you get to like one
- 10:52Speaker 3: hundred on the list, now you're talking you got more
- 10:54Speaker 3: like a twenty five to thirty percent chance of a
- 10:56Speaker 3: long term regular, still a good chance. You still want
- 10:59Speaker 3: those kind of guys. Those kind of guys can absolutely
- 11:01Speaker 3: change the direction of your organization. But at the same time,
- 11:05Speaker 3: it's not something where if you see again, I think
- 11:08Speaker 3: we are up to now, last I checked five top
- 11:10Speaker 3: hundred prospects trade at the deadline, which by the way,
- 11:12Speaker 3: makes it basically one of the busiest deadlines. Already with
- 11:16Speaker 3: an hour to go, you know, well almost an hour
- 11:18Speaker 3: to go, an hour plus until we'll find out of
- 11:20Speaker 3: all the deals it's one of the busiest deadlines ever.
- 11:22Speaker 3: But five top hundred prospects means if we get two
- 11:25Speaker 3: or three of those who end up being slng term studs,
- 11:28Speaker 3: that's a good return.
- 11:31Speaker 7: All right about the Angels, you had them on there,
- 11:33Speaker 7: number one, number one returned player in a trade the
- 11:37Speaker 7: Angels got.
- 11:39Speaker 3: So they get their shortstop of the future, which, again
- 11:42Speaker 3: you can ask, does that mean that Zach detO is
- 11:44Speaker 3: is he Are they gonna have two short stops of
- 11:46Speaker 3: the short term future or are they gonna have one?
- 11:48Speaker 3: We'll see, But I will say that the thing that
- 11:50Speaker 3: stands out to me about this is and if I'm
- 11:52Speaker 3: an Angels fan, I'm not, but if I was, I
- 11:54Speaker 3: would be very excited about today because all I just
- 11:57Speaker 3: said about prospect hugging and all the opposite that the
- 12:00Speaker 3: worst thing you can do is year after year be like, Nope,
- 12:04Speaker 3: we're not traded prospects.
- 12:05Speaker 4: We're in it. It's like we won seventy three games.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Next year, we're in it. We won seventy four games.
- 12:10Speaker 4: And they've done this.
- 12:11Speaker 3: They have not had a winning record in the past decade.
- 12:15Speaker 3: They everyone knows, we all you know, we were seeing
- 12:18Speaker 3: scouts for the Angels who were going out scouting for
- 12:21Speaker 3: the return for Shoeo Tani at the deadline, the owner said, nope,
- 12:25Speaker 3: flip it, We're going the other way around.
- 12:27Speaker 4: They didn't do that this year.
- 12:28Speaker 3: This year they are actually trading valuable pieces, but for
- 12:32Speaker 3: they've realized they're not were anywhere near to being where
- 12:35Speaker 3: they need to be. Argent Namala, it's the big return
- 12:38Speaker 3: in that trade. That's the Blue Jay's number one prospect,
- 12:41Speaker 3: a shortstop who's kind of had up and down kind
- 12:44Speaker 3: of development paths so far. There are times where he
- 12:46Speaker 3: looks lost at the plate. There are times he looks
- 12:49Speaker 3: locked in, but then you have to remember he's kind
- 12:51Speaker 3: of in one of the youngest guys at every level
- 12:52Speaker 3: he's played at.
- 12:53Speaker 4: He's still only twenty years old. It's in Double A.
- 12:56Speaker 3: There's real power here, there's the real you know, shortstop
- 12:59Speaker 3: glove of Eventually he may out grow up in the
- 13:01Speaker 3: short dum. I think he could be an above average
- 13:03Speaker 3: shortstop defensively at the big league level, and he's making
- 13:07Speaker 3: much more contact strikeouts are concerned. In the past twenty
- 13:09Speaker 3: two percent strikeout rate. This year, he's showing the kind
- 13:12Speaker 3: of steps forward you want to see and yeah, Like
- 13:16Speaker 3: if you look at for the Angels and you say, okay,
- 13:18Speaker 3: they've added him. We talked about boys as Palisteros, We've
- 13:21Speaker 3: talked about they're adding players who The one other thing
- 13:23Speaker 3: I would say about the Angels is the thing that's
- 13:26Speaker 3: tripped at the Angels year after year after year has
- 13:29Speaker 3: been yes they have Mike Trout, Yes they had Choey O'tani,
- 13:33Speaker 3: but every year they're always like one il trip away
- 13:38Speaker 3: from looking around and going, we don't have a second baseman,
- 13:40Speaker 3: we don't have a third basement, we don't have a
- 13:42Speaker 3: short stop, we don't have a number four starter or
- 13:44Speaker 3: whatever it is. And they've often had to hand those
- 13:47Speaker 3: two players, you know, basically waiver claims at all, and
- 13:50Speaker 3: they've lost so many games because they really haven't had
- 13:54Speaker 3: kind of the next up. Nacho Alvarez, who they added
- 13:58Speaker 3: from the Braves in the trade today, I think not
- 14:00Speaker 3: Avaaz is a great He's not even a prospect anymore.
- 14:02Speaker 4: It's officially graduated. But he's not a great player in anyway.
- 14:05Speaker 3: You're not going to say, oh, that's a game changing player,
- 14:08Speaker 3: but he has way more value for the Angels. I
- 14:10Speaker 3: would say that he does for say the Braves because
- 14:13Speaker 3: I do think with the Angels, if you said send
- 14:15Speaker 3: him to Triple A, but when there's.
- 14:17Speaker 4: An injury, and there will be, we know there are
- 14:19Speaker 4: going to be injuries.
- 14:20Speaker 3: When there is, okay, you bring him up and he
- 14:22Speaker 3: can play third for a little while, or play second,
- 14:24Speaker 3: even play short a little bit in a pinch.
- 14:25Speaker 4: He can do all those things.
- 14:27Speaker 3: Those are the things that I would say year after
- 14:29Speaker 3: year the Angels haven't had.
- 14:33Speaker 5: Have one more question for you, can we can we
- 14:34Speaker 5: show the board of the ba's top rank prospects traded
- 14:38Speaker 5: so far? Can we can we pull this back? Please?
- 14:41Speaker 5: I just want to know JJ. I have a question
- 14:43Speaker 5: for JJ about it. Namal Is one, Hope is to
- 14:47Speaker 5: Marquez three, and then we get to really.
- 14:49Speaker 3: I'll give you the updated one because we've had more
- 14:51Speaker 3: players traded since then. So right now it's Anthony Ayes
- 14:55Speaker 3: Iinsen one, Themala two, Hope three, Kyson Witherspoon four, and
- 14:59Speaker 3: Alexander Friez five because no trades are happening fast and furious.
- 15:03Speaker 5: Okay, no problem, But my question is more on River Ryan.
- 15:05Speaker 5: He's about to be twenty eight years old. Is he
- 15:07Speaker 5: still considered a prospect?
- 15:10Speaker 3: He is because he's prospect eligibly could win Rooie the
- 15:12Speaker 3: year next year.
- 15:13Speaker 4: That's our rule we have.
- 15:14Speaker 3: But I would say like he is one of the
- 15:15Speaker 3: most difficult guys to rank in a long time, because
- 15:19Speaker 3: I cannot find you an example. I've been I've got
- 15:21Speaker 3: a piece coming out whenever they stopped doing trades, and
- 15:24Speaker 3: so it'll be tomorrow probably before I get to do it.
- 15:26Speaker 3: But I looked at every big league starter who graduated
- 15:31Speaker 3: from rookie status as age twenty eight or older of
- 15:35Speaker 3: the twenty first century, and there are a couple on there.
- 15:37Speaker 6: There's Al R.
- 15:38Speaker 3: Dickey, you know, who blew out his arm and then
- 15:40Speaker 3: reinvented himself as a knuckleballer. And there's Jeremy Guthrie who
- 15:42Speaker 3: went on a two year you know, mission trip and
- 15:45Speaker 3: so got off to a late started his career.
- 15:47Speaker 4: It's a very short list there aren't, you know.
- 15:50Speaker 3: If you take out the Japanese pitchers who were coming
- 15:52Speaker 3: over after long careers in the you know, in the MPB,
- 15:55Speaker 3: and taking away a few Cuban pitchers who pitched in
- 15:58Speaker 3: Syria you know, in Seria now now for a long
- 16:00Speaker 3: time and then came over, you know, take those away,
- 16:04Speaker 3: and there just aren't a whole lot of starters of
- 16:07Speaker 3: Vinnie Ilk domestic starters who graduate at age twenty eight.
- 16:12Speaker 3: River Ryan is a weird case. He was a two
- 16:15Speaker 3: way player at UNC Pembroke, a shortstop second baseman who
- 16:18Speaker 3: then would relieve and it was still going to starter
- 16:20Speaker 3: at the end of the year that had started him.
- 16:22Speaker 3: But he first year as a pitcher in college was
- 16:25Speaker 3: twenty seventeen and here we are it's twenty twenty six
- 16:28Speaker 3: and he's thrown one hundred innings once in his career.
- 16:31Speaker 3: That's a hard guy to evaluate because even next year,
- 16:35Speaker 3: as great as his stuff is, even next year, it's
- 16:38Speaker 3: going to be hard to ramp him up because he's
- 16:39Speaker 3: thrown thirty six innings this year, basically throw any last
- 16:42Speaker 3: year he didn't throw the year before that. What I mean,
- 16:45Speaker 3: it's one hundred and one hundred and twenty you know,
- 16:47Speaker 3: going to be the realistic outcome, Like that's what's going
- 16:49Speaker 3: to be interesting to watch.
- 16:51Speaker 2: This is that time of year, aj it is Baseball's
- 16:53Speaker 2: time to shine, and it is Sea geeks time to
- 16:57Speaker 2: shine with MLB tickets and finding the best, best pricing
- 17:01Speaker 2: seating and games that are even sold out available on Sea.
- 17:05Speaker 5: Geek absolutely if you want to go to the biggest
- 17:08Speaker 5: matchups coming up. We have Yankees Cubs coming up. Where's
- 17:11Speaker 5: Yankees red sox? That means stuff. Again, there's some big
- 17:13Speaker 5: moments that are coming up here in the as the
- 17:16Speaker 5: penachases really heat up. Go to ske can find those
- 17:19Speaker 5: green tickets with the best deals and get yourself out
- 17:22Speaker 5: to an MLB game.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Yeah, and they're straightforward with you.
- 17:25Speaker 2: They will actually put a red dot next to a
- 17:28Speaker 2: ticket that they don't feel is your best.
- 17:31Speaker 6: Look.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Green dot means very good code for you. It's Territory
- 17:36Speaker 2: ten ten percent off your next set of MLB tickets
- 17:39Speaker 2: at Sea Gek. That's ten percent off MLB tickets when
- 17:43Speaker 2: you use the promo code Territory one zero. Make sure
- 17:46Speaker 2: you click the link in the description to download the
- 17:47Speaker 2: app and have the code automatically added to your account
- 17:50Speaker 2: so you can use it later. Okay, So it doesn't
- 17:55Speaker 2: sound like we're in love with him, right, It sounds
- 17:59Speaker 2: like the.
- 18:00Speaker 5: Guy like a lot of things.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Like sounds like the real prize in that package was
- 18:06Speaker 2: zyr Hoope.
- 18:07Speaker 6: Right.
- 18:08Speaker 2: There are other prospects similar ILK in terms of potential
- 18:13Speaker 2: to be impacts big leaguers that are on your list, right,
- 18:15Speaker 2: It's not like Hope's in his own category? Is Terrek
- 18:19Speaker 2: Scooble in his own category? Like when you see what's
- 18:22Speaker 2: going on today? Logan Henderson Scott Logan Henderson. Does it
- 18:26Speaker 2: make me think that the Tigers traded Schooble too soon
- 18:31Speaker 2: on a Saturday night before everything else happened? Or did
- 18:33Speaker 2: the industry do the classic We have to wait and
- 18:35Speaker 2: see what happens with Schoogle. My point is, does that
- 18:39Speaker 2: look like by far the best package? And I know
- 18:41Speaker 2: that it's it's different for a rental versus controllable years.
- 18:44Speaker 4: That's where I was going to go.
- 18:47Speaker 6: Is this.
- 18:47Speaker 3: I think that the rental piece of it is the
- 18:49Speaker 3: key component. And you can say that you should overpay
- 18:51Speaker 3: you when you're talking about it's a rental, but it's
- 18:54Speaker 3: a two time back to back defending cy Young Champion
- 18:57Speaker 3: young winner.
- 18:58Speaker 4: That's that's not the.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Same thing as a normal even ACE. But this I
- 19:02Speaker 3: studied every twenty first century ACE rental trade package and
- 19:07Speaker 3: this one fits very much within those parameters. And then
- 19:10Speaker 3: you see a trade like the Soriano trade and you're
- 19:13Speaker 3: like that it seems weird. You know that that would
- 19:16Speaker 3: be cause Sorianis. No one thinks that Sorianos is good
- 19:18Speaker 3: a pictures as Scoble. But then you look at it
- 19:21Speaker 3: a different way and you say, but again two plus
- 19:24Speaker 3: years versus a couple of months, and I do the other,
- 19:28Speaker 3: you know, the other thing that is being discussed. I
- 19:30Speaker 3: think you again, I've done reporting on this. I'll all
- 19:32Speaker 3: make it my reporting. But how much of it is
- 19:35Speaker 3: like we do also have that Schooble is coming off
- 19:39Speaker 3: of you know, he's pitching well, but he had a new,
- 19:42Speaker 3: more novel type of elbow procedure earlier this year. Seems
- 19:46Speaker 3: like the medicals are fine, but I do also wonder
- 19:48Speaker 3: if there are teams who are more cautious when it
- 19:50Speaker 3: comes to that. Again, there's all these things where I
- 19:55Speaker 3: said it to you guys on Sunday, like to me
- 19:58Speaker 3: for all those things, I'm not saying that you sacrifice
- 20:02Speaker 3: everything for the long term. But if you have a
- 20:05Speaker 3: chance to have Trek Scougel in your playoff rotation, I
- 20:08Speaker 3: do think it doesn't guarantee you anything, even for the
- 20:11Speaker 3: Dodgers guarantee you anything, but it does definitely up your
- 20:14Speaker 3: chances and when you get to October, upping your chances.
- 20:19Speaker 3: That's kind of the point of the game in a
- 20:20Speaker 3: lot of ways.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Hey, we're about to go over a breaking news trade
- 20:26Speaker 2: after rechat with you, which is Hellya Ramos being acquired
- 20:29Speaker 2: by the Yankees. I'm going to put you on the
- 20:31Speaker 2: spot with one name that seems to be surfacing here
- 20:35Speaker 2: as the primary prospect in the trade. His name is
- 20:37Speaker 2: Henry Lalane in the New York Yankee system.
- 20:40Speaker 1: I know that you know him. I've heard you talk
- 20:41Speaker 1: about him. Can you tell us what are.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Your thoughts on the Giants picking up someone like this
- 20:47Speaker 2: and giving away someone in Ramos who is not just
- 20:50Speaker 2: a rental.
- 20:52Speaker 3: He's the young guy version of River Ryan. And that
- 20:55Speaker 3: sounds weird to say this because he's much younger. But
- 20:57Speaker 3: Henry Lelane was a guy who was a breakout prospect
- 21:00Speaker 3: few years ago and then he injured I believe it
- 21:02Speaker 3: was his shoulder off top of my head, and he
- 21:04Speaker 3: really kind of disappeared right. There was a multi year's
- 21:07Speaker 3: period where the stuff was just gone. When he would
- 21:10Speaker 3: make appearances, rehab appearances, you'd be like, it was kind
- 21:13Speaker 3: of depressing to see a guy used to have top
- 21:15Speaker 3: tier stuff not have it. And this year the stuff's back,
- 21:18Speaker 3: and we saw him basically come out and just shove
- 21:22Speaker 3: time after time and a time. He's been the fastest riser,
- 21:25Speaker 3: the biggest riser on that Yankees top thirty list for us.
- 21:29Speaker 3: He is a guy who I think is a very
- 21:32Speaker 3: good git for the Giants. I think that you look
- 21:34Speaker 3: at this Giants farm system now and I don't think
- 21:37Speaker 3: there's a lot of consolation for a Giants fan right
- 21:39Speaker 3: now if you thought you're gonna be a lot better
- 21:40Speaker 3: than this. But that is a very good git to
- 21:43Speaker 3: get for a guy like Elliott Ramos, who's a good,
- 21:45Speaker 3: solid player. But again, this is I think if I
- 21:47Speaker 3: was looking at the Yankees system and you said, what
- 21:50Speaker 3: picture do I want, there's a couple of guys who
- 21:53Speaker 3: probably a little bit closer proximity, little less risk, that
- 21:56Speaker 3: maybe you would go after.
- 21:57Speaker 4: But if you're saying I want to shoot the moon for.
- 21:59Speaker 3: A guy who could be a front of the rotation
- 22:02Speaker 3: starter if everything breaks right and most importantly stays healthy,
- 22:05Speaker 3: that's the that's the guy you'd be looking at.
- 22:09Speaker 5: That's a lot of ifs. By the way, sorry, that's
- 22:11Speaker 5: a lot of traded.
- 22:13Speaker 4: That's why it's trading.
- 22:15Speaker 1: A lot of ifs six seven lefty though, you gotta.
- 22:18Speaker 5: You know what they say from my aunt and uncle?
- 22:23Speaker 1: What do they say?
- 22:24Speaker 5: And I love to say it. I was scolded. I
- 22:26Speaker 5: was reprimanded for using it once. Okay, JJ ahead balls,
- 22:29Speaker 5: she'd be my uncle.
- 22:31Speaker 4: I gotta get back to writing. Thank you guys, do it,
- 22:33Speaker 4: thank you.
- 22:34Speaker 7: Thanks.
- 22:35Speaker 2: That was data dish from JJ Cooper, going over prospects
- 22:38Speaker 2: and getting inside the data. Whether you're building a program,
- 22:41Speaker 2: developing players are just tired of guessing. Rahapsoda dot com
- 22:44Speaker 2: is the spot to learn more data wins. Rhapsodo helps
- 22:46Speaker 2: you use it trying the rubber for the Dodgers Mega
- 22:53Speaker 2: team will be Trek Schoogle. This is our little window
- 22:56Speaker 2: to talk about the deal that rocked the weekend. We
- 22:59Speaker 2: did a a forty minute show over the weekend breaking news.
- 23:02Speaker 2: It all still applies if you want to check that
- 23:04Speaker 2: out at some point later on. But we're live here
- 23:07Speaker 2: within the Ft trade deadline extravaganza. So when you saw that,
- 23:11Speaker 2: your first reaction was duh, Really you weren't surprised that
- 23:16Speaker 2: nobody else this time?
- 23:18Speaker 5: I thought it was no, I know here's I was no, okay,
- 23:21Speaker 5: So what's funny is I was with Ken on Saturday.
- 23:25Speaker 5: We were in Wrigleyville. We were driving back to the
- 23:28Speaker 5: hotel after the game. First of all, took him forever. Ken,
- 23:31Speaker 5: hurry up after the games. You're making me wait. And
- 23:32Speaker 5: I had all these awkward Cup fans coming up to
- 23:34Speaker 5: me asking me for pictures and stuff. I'm like, you're
- 23:36Speaker 5: a Cup.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Fan, they love you.
- 23:38Speaker 5: But he was in the car and I've written with
- 23:44Speaker 5: Ken before, and he texted me before the games, like,
- 23:46Speaker 5: don't bother me today, just leave me alone.
- 23:48Speaker 7: Right, So he's.
- 23:50Speaker 5: No, no, no, no, no, no no, it's Ken. Okay, Can
- 23:53Speaker 5: and I haven't boss. Can and I. Can and I
- 23:56Speaker 5: love each other, okay, So anyone thinks we don't get along,
- 23:58Speaker 5: we get along awesome. And Can and I just give
- 24:00Speaker 5: each other a grief because we like each other. Yes,
- 24:02Speaker 5: But he's sitting I'm sitting in the passenger side backsteam
- 24:06Speaker 5: He's across from me and the behind the driver, and
- 24:08Speaker 5: all I hear is and I'm like, Ken, what is happening?
- 24:15Speaker 5: And he' said I told you not to bother me.
- 24:17Speaker 5: And I was like what. He's like, let me finish this,
- 24:19Speaker 5: let me finish this, and on his and I could
- 24:22Speaker 5: see his iPad. It wasn't on the phone. It was
- 24:23Speaker 5: on his iPad, and I could see on his iPad
- 24:25Speaker 5: it said it was text from people, and I wasn't.
- 24:28Speaker 5: I just saw text.
- 24:28Speaker 3: I was.
- 24:29Speaker 5: I didn't read them, so ken don't. I didn't read them.
- 24:31Speaker 5: I just saw it was like, dude, a million texts.
- 24:33Speaker 5: And I was like, can what's happened? He's like, I
- 24:34Speaker 5: think Scoogle happens tonight and I was like, oh, oh where,
- 24:38Speaker 5: and he's I can't tell you, but I think it's
- 24:39Speaker 5: happened in the night. And I was like, oh, okay, sweet,
- 24:42Speaker 5: sweet sweet. And then so I don't know. We get
- 24:44Speaker 5: back to the hotel and I think it was probably
- 24:46Speaker 5: twenty minutes later, ten minutes later where it came out
- 24:48Speaker 5: he was going to the Dodgers. And my first reaction
- 24:51Speaker 5: was duh. And then my second reaction was anger for
- 24:58Speaker 5: the Brewers and the race because Brewers and Rais fans,
- 25:01Speaker 5: because then you see what they got back. And again, Okay,
- 25:04Speaker 5: White might end up being the best player ever. Okay,
- 25:08Speaker 5: but on paper, you would think that the Brewers, who
- 25:10Speaker 5: we've all heard have the best farm system of going right, say,
- 25:13Speaker 5: might be the best player. Your hope sorry, call him,
- 25:17Speaker 5: say you're white sorry, Zay your hope sorry, zire hope
- 25:20Speaker 5: might be there. It is say your hope sorry, might
- 25:22Speaker 5: be the And Jim said he's gonna he's gonna be
- 25:25Speaker 5: an awesome player in this and now. But I was thinking,
- 25:28Speaker 5: and We've talked about this on the show so many times,
- 25:30Speaker 5: and so many people I've talked to over the last
- 25:32Speaker 5: week were like, please let someone other than the Dodgers
- 25:35Speaker 5: go for it. And we've talked about on the show.
- 25:38Speaker 5: Raise Brewers, go for it, get this guy, get it done.
- 25:43Speaker 5: The Rays. You have a great chance to win the
- 25:44Speaker 5: American League this year and get to the postseason. And yes,
- 25:47Speaker 5: Freddy Peralta is a nice pickup, but you also have Rasmus,
- 25:50Speaker 5: and you also have McClanahan. You also have Nick Martinez, right,
- 25:53Speaker 5: and you just lost two out of three to the
- 25:55Speaker 5: White Sox. Go get Scooble doesn't happen, Brewers, you have
- 25:59Speaker 5: a great chance if you go miss schoolball. Harrison, your team,
- 26:03Speaker 5: the way you play your bullpen with McGill and a
- 26:05Speaker 5: Rebay and the rest of that group that did ashby
- 26:08Speaker 5: the way Pat Murphy handles it, you have a chance
- 26:10Speaker 5: to knock off and not only knock them off, but
- 26:12Speaker 5: take the one guy they really wanted and basically say,
- 26:15Speaker 5: here's the guy you wanted. We got them and they
- 26:17Speaker 5: didn't do it. And that's why my second reaction was anger,
- 26:21Speaker 5: because I just as a baseball fan. Okay, listen, Dodgers
- 26:24Speaker 5: are awesome. I love the Dodgers. I love the Dodger players.
- 26:27Speaker 5: The organization's unbelievable. They go and do what they want
- 26:29Speaker 5: to do right, money aside, they use their resources and
- 26:32Speaker 5: they do it better than anybody else. Okay, but gosh
- 26:34Speaker 5: darn it, I want to see one of these other
- 26:36Speaker 5: teams one time say screw it, we're just gonna give
- 26:39Speaker 5: up our third best prospect and our eighth best prospect
- 26:43Speaker 5: and make a deal happen. And they didn't do it.
- 26:46Speaker 5: And listen, Matt Arnold, we love Matt Earland's been on
- 26:48Speaker 5: the show and I love talking to Matt Arnold. And
- 26:50Speaker 5: Kratz I know loves Matt Arnold and he's pickleball and
- 26:52Speaker 5: this and that. Gosh darn it, and Matt Mark Attanasio
- 26:55Speaker 5: gave you the okay to go get Derek Scooble, and
- 26:58Speaker 5: this was the time to do it, even if it's
- 27:00Speaker 5: only for two months. You saw what happened in two
- 27:02Speaker 5: thousand and eight when you went and got Cecson Maathia,
- 27:04Speaker 5: and none of those players turned out to be that great.
- 27:06Speaker 5: I mean, Mount Laporter was the big name. Yes, Michael
- 27:08Speaker 5: Brandley had a great career, but he had a great
- 27:10Speaker 5: career in Cleveland.
- 27:12Speaker 7: So I just wish there was a way.
- 27:17Speaker 5: That's my rant.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Remember the Dodgers trade for you Darvish, which at the
- 27:20Speaker 2: time was huge too, and they gave up all these
- 27:22Speaker 2: prospects to Texas, Like.
- 27:23Speaker 1: None of them worked out. I mean, and I get it.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Sometimes you're gonna get caught and somebody is going to
- 27:29Speaker 2: thrive elsewhere.
- 27:29Speaker 1: But krat you were just out in Milwaukee.
- 27:32Speaker 2: They have a top three system, really unanimous across the sport.
- 27:36Speaker 2: It's really deep, and it's full of impact players, and
- 27:38Speaker 2: at some point it's going to become the logjam, and
- 27:40Speaker 2: then it's going to become Oh, some of these players
- 27:42Speaker 2: lose value, which is what happened with the Orioles. The
- 27:45Speaker 2: question on everyone's mind is you had an opportunity to
- 27:49Speaker 2: not lose out on a huge pitcher because of money.
- 27:52Speaker 2: This has to do with prospect capital, and you let
- 27:56Speaker 2: a team that could beat you in the National League
- 27:58Speaker 2: Championship Series or whatever grab them.
- 28:02Speaker 7: That's the that's the part that's toughest for me, is
- 28:05Speaker 7: you want to make the World Series because you have
- 28:07Speaker 7: a chance to win the World Series if they're in
- 28:09Speaker 7: the American League. I think this move okay, it's fine.
- 28:12Speaker 7: You know what, we don't need to beat the Yankees.
- 28:15Speaker 7: We don't need to beat the Rays with Trek Skubel
- 28:18Speaker 7: to me, if you know and you think that the
- 28:21Speaker 7: Dodgers are gonna be the team that's going to outbid you,
- 28:24Speaker 7: if you're the Brewers, I think you do it. Because
- 28:27Speaker 7: the one consistency that the Brewers have had is it
- 28:30Speaker 7: doesn't matter who they have, who they get rid of.
- 28:34Speaker 7: They're making the playoffs. They're winning the division. Starting in
- 28:37Speaker 7: twenty eighteen, they've been the it's a dynasty in their division.
- 28:42Speaker 7: They're they're taking the NL Central, and they're making everybody
- 28:47Speaker 7: else who cares?
- 28:49Speaker 5: Who cares? Who cares? Who cares? Who cares? The Braves
- 28:53Speaker 5: won fourteen k secutive divisions. They won one World Series.
- 28:57Speaker 5: Everyone says that's they won one. The Birds haven't won
- 29:00Speaker 5: a World Series every one.
- 29:05Speaker 7: They have the farm system to do that. That's never
- 29:08Speaker 7: going to change. Make the trade to win the World
- 29:13Speaker 7: Series that you do not have clearly. So far, everything
- 29:16Speaker 7: that you've done is just win the division. So you've
- 29:20Speaker 7: got that locked down. You'll be able to do that
- 29:22Speaker 7: no matter who you get rid of. For Tarrek's scuble,
- 29:25Speaker 7: for the Orioles when they got rid of Corman, Burns
- 29:28Speaker 7: still can win the division. For the Mets got rid
- 29:30Speaker 7: of Freddie Peralta, they still can win the division. So
- 29:33Speaker 7: you can get rid of guys, you can get rid
- 29:35Speaker 7: of prospects too. To me, this was the move that
- 29:38Speaker 7: they needed to make. I get it. They're not Sarah
- 29:41Speaker 7: Scouoble's not hitting home runs. Doesn't matter. They do it
- 29:44Speaker 7: their own conventional way. But they've solidified the fact that
- 29:48Speaker 7: they can win the division. Now you have to make
- 29:51Speaker 7: a move to win the World Series or to make
- 29:54Speaker 7: it to the World Series, and the Dodgers are the
- 29:56Speaker 7: team in your way. If the Dodgers didn't want Schooble,
- 29:58Speaker 7: then I'm like, okay, fine, and then you don't need Scooble.
- 30:01Speaker 7: But this is that's where I think they missed.
- 30:04Speaker 1: They missed badly, and maybe we're going to be wrong.
- 30:07Speaker 5: Maybe we're wrong. I don't know, but it's just what
- 30:10Speaker 5: wrong on what? Maybe wrong?
- 30:11Speaker 6: What?
- 30:12Speaker 2: Maybe they still slay the dragon and the Breers beat
- 30:16Speaker 2: the Dodgers and they do ninety things in the next
- 30:18Speaker 2: three eighty.
- 30:18Speaker 5: Nineteen eighty two is a really long time ago, and
- 30:21Speaker 5: they didn't win that year. They've never won a World Series? Right,
- 30:25Speaker 5: asked the Cubs when they traded Glaver Torres for old
- 30:28Speaker 5: As Chapman, and everyone's like, oh, he's a rental and
- 30:31Speaker 5: then he went back to the Yankees. Was twenty sixteen?
- 30:34Speaker 2: Worked at what about twenty twenty three? Jordan Montgomery, who
- 30:37Speaker 2: was not as good as Trek Schoogle. He was the
- 30:40Speaker 2: prize or, one of the top prizes of the trade deadline.
- 30:42Speaker 2: He was the difference shoved for the Rangers. Diamondbacks wanted
- 30:46Speaker 2: him to didn't get him beat them in the World Series.
- 30:49Speaker 5: But here's anybody it tells when a team says we're
- 30:53Speaker 5: not going to go all in, do they really think
- 30:55Speaker 5: they're good enough to win? That's my question? Do they
- 30:58Speaker 5: really think they're good enough if we don't trust that
- 31:01Speaker 5: we can win this year if we go and get
- 31:04Speaker 5: the best picture available by far, A guy who's won
- 31:07Speaker 5: back to back syngs. Again, this is not this is
- 31:10Speaker 5: just a question, not not my opinion, but does the
- 31:12Speaker 5: front office believe, hey, we're good enough if we don't,
- 31:17Speaker 5: if we won't give up our seventh and eighth best
- 31:19Speaker 5: prospect to me?
- 31:22Speaker 1: And honestly, I don't know.
- 31:23Speaker 5: That's the that's the that's the that's the new question.
- 31:25Speaker 5: In the old days, and again I've played in the
- 31:27Speaker 5: old days, Okay, teams are like, we got a chance,
- 31:30Speaker 5: we're freaking going for it. We don't care about that
- 31:32Speaker 5: guy five years from now. But now teams are, well,
- 31:36Speaker 5: he might be good seven years from now. You got
- 31:38Speaker 5: to hold on to him.
- 31:39Speaker 2: Yeah, fifty, let's just be in it. Every don't know,
- 31:42Speaker 2: it's really whatever.
- 31:43Speaker 5: That's why i'm because I just feel like they could
- 31:45Speaker 5: have got it done and it. World Series winning teams
- 31:49Speaker 5: are remembered forever in every city that happens in right,
- 31:53Speaker 5: they're They're remembered forever, especially when you're the first one
- 31:56Speaker 5: to do it. I mean the twenty sixteen Cubs, two
- 31:58Speaker 5: thousand and five White Sox, twenty fifteen Royals, and they
- 32:01Speaker 5: had one since eighty five, right, that twenty fifteen fifteen
- 32:05Speaker 5: team is legendary two thousand and four Red Sox legendary
- 32:08Speaker 5: right for teams that haven't won. The first Brewers team
- 32:11Speaker 5: if they ever do, it gonna never be forgotten. In Milwaukee.
- 32:14Speaker 5: The first Mariners team that ever makes the World Series,
- 32:17Speaker 5: and then if they win, it will never be forgotten.
- 32:19Speaker 5: It's just I don't know.
- 32:21Speaker 2: It's the summertime, aj and this is a time to

- 33:33Speaker 2: Walter joining us on trade deadline Day. Happy trade deadline
- 33:36Speaker 2: Day to you, Buck, And I want to start with
- 33:38Speaker 2: the team that you know you just visited, actually the
- 33:41Speaker 2: Baltimore Orioles Trading off ADLEI Retchman, can you take me
- 33:44Speaker 2: through your thoughts on that one and what you know
- 33:46Speaker 2: about Adley and how the Red Sox make an interesting
- 33:49Speaker 2: interdivision move like this.
- 33:52Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, it's it's sad to see somebody that
- 33:56Speaker 6: so much a community move on. It's been a little
- 33:59Speaker 6: different circumstance for him. He's playing on a lot of stages.
- 34:02Speaker 6: He'll do well with it. You know, this time of
- 34:05Speaker 6: the year you get sometimes I think the front officers
- 34:07Speaker 6: are seeing how many people they can acquire that are
- 34:09Speaker 6: on that top top one hundred lists. Oh here's number seventeen.
- 34:14Speaker 6: Oh here's number fifteen, here's number number four? What do
- 34:18Speaker 6: you really got? You know? So one you better have
- 34:22Speaker 6: somebody to take his place, which they think they do,
- 34:24Speaker 6: and they actually got to catch her back in a deal.
- 34:26Speaker 6: But it's kind of sad, you know, going at Chris
- 34:29Speaker 6: Davis's Hall of Fame, they were like fourteen or fifteen
- 34:31Speaker 6: guys show up, And I thought about how much we've
- 34:35Speaker 6: kind of missed keeping teams together and let them grow together,
- 34:39Speaker 6: and let them go through the tough times to appreciate
- 34:42Speaker 6: the good times. And I don't know, Adalie Leavin somehow
- 34:47Speaker 6: just you'd like to see him stay the course there.
- 34:49Speaker 6: But I know how how people work nowadays.
- 34:53Speaker 5: Fuck, what do you just said something? You just said something?
- 34:56Speaker 5: I love. They're trying to get this prospect in that
- 34:59Speaker 5: front now you or You've been in a lot of organizations,
- 35:02Speaker 5: and Kratz and I say this all the time. They
- 35:04Speaker 5: and we love Baseball America, We love JJ Cooper. The
- 35:07Speaker 5: top thirty prospects in an organization. Please tell me how
- 35:11Speaker 5: many prospects there really are in an organization. No organization
- 35:15Speaker 5: has thirty prospects. If they have seven or eight, they're
- 35:19Speaker 5: way ahead of most organizations, right.
- 35:22Speaker 6: Yeah, without a doubt. And you know who makes these
- 35:24Speaker 6: lists up. You know they talk to the scouting director.
- 35:27Speaker 6: What's he going to say, we don't have any prospects,
- 35:30Speaker 6: you know, so you know it's like who's evaluating this
- 35:34Speaker 6: and saying, Okay, this is the real guy. One of
- 35:36Speaker 6: the best things organizations can do is separate their prospects
- 35:40Speaker 6: from their suspects. You know, one thing about the great
- 35:42Speaker 6: gen Michael New York, one thing is greate. It's one
- 35:45Speaker 6: of the greatest attributes other than being able to evaluate players,
- 35:48Speaker 6: is when they made a mistake. When he made a mistake,
- 35:50Speaker 6: he goes, boys, we whiffed on that one. Let's move on.
- 35:54Speaker 6: Let's don't compound it by continuing to run this out.
- 35:58Speaker 6: And the ability to look at yourself well honestly and say,
- 36:01Speaker 6: you know, but if you know it before the other
- 36:04Speaker 6: teams know it, and you can move that player and
- 36:06Speaker 6: get something a piece for your club instead of being
- 36:10Speaker 6: stubborn and going listen, we were writing that draft and
- 36:13Speaker 6: we were writing this and we'll never you know, you
- 36:16Speaker 6: got to admit it. Sometimes sometimes you swinging this. Everything's
- 36:20Speaker 6: lines up right on paper, but somehow it just doesn't
- 36:24Speaker 6: work out. Sometimes from a makeup standpoint.
- 36:29Speaker 7: Do you have a role in that as a manager.
- 36:31Speaker 7: Do you look at the players and say, that's a
- 36:34Speaker 7: big leaguer, please don't get rid of him, or do
- 36:37Speaker 7: you say, I don't care who it is. I want
- 36:40Speaker 7: to get only big leaguers for you know, lou Panella
- 36:43Speaker 7: style now whatever. I don't like anybody in the minor leagues.
- 36:46Speaker 6: Well, you know, looking. Because I was lucky enough to
- 36:49Speaker 6: come through farm systems and kind of run some of
- 36:52Speaker 6: it out there in Arizona, I realized the big picture
- 36:55Speaker 6: as a manager, and I knew sometimes you had to
- 37:00Speaker 6: do certain things and you appreciated the whole scheme of
- 37:03Speaker 6: how it went down, so you took it. But calling
- 37:06Speaker 6: those guys in and tell them about it. Nowadays you
- 37:08Speaker 6: just find out about it. The guys walk in, Hey,
- 37:10Speaker 6: I've been traded. There's not that kind of code of
- 37:14Speaker 6: I don't know, honor or whatever. It's painful time for
- 37:17Speaker 6: managers that you know you've been around guys forever. I
- 37:20Speaker 6: remember trying to talk Max into going and taking the
- 37:23Speaker 6: trade because he wanted to stay. He felt like he
- 37:26Speaker 6: was kind of jumping ship on his teammates. But you know,
- 37:31Speaker 6: a lot of things hit me this weekend with Chris
- 37:33Speaker 6: Davis and all the players that came back for him
- 37:35Speaker 6: and that group, there was just a certain connection that
- 37:39Speaker 6: they've kind of played for each other. You guys know
- 37:41Speaker 6: when you're on the right team, and you can't quantify,
- 37:44Speaker 6: you just know when you're in the right place. So
- 37:46Speaker 6: sometimes anything I could do to keep these players from
- 37:49Speaker 6: feeling like pieces of meat that you moved around that
- 37:54Speaker 6: it was more personal. You had to do that in
- 37:56Speaker 6: the clubhouse, and this time of year, it just seemed
- 37:59Speaker 6: like it's not very personal. Let's just say we're gonna
- 38:01Speaker 6: move you this and that and whatever. So I don't
- 38:03Speaker 6: begrudge anybody to get in a note trade at all.

- 39:05Speaker 2: students and counting. Hey, Buck, let's go over some of
- 39:09Speaker 2: the trades that you've liked so far. And I've known
- 39:12Speaker 2: you for a while at this point, I know you
- 39:14Speaker 2: like a good old baseball player for.
- 39:16Speaker 1: MLB player for MLB player trades.
- 39:18Speaker 2: So we just had one right before you popped on
- 39:20Speaker 2: in Dalton Bar show landing with the Houston astro spencer
- 39:23Speaker 2: Arighetti goes the other way. That's just one I'd love
- 39:26Speaker 2: to get your thoughts on, but give us any others too.
- 39:28Speaker 6: When you comment, Yeah, isn't it funny how this time
- 39:31Speaker 6: of year the baseball player seemed to be wanted like
- 39:35Speaker 6: a rise. You know, every year he seems to be
- 39:37Speaker 6: a free agent. Every year he seems to get traded.
- 39:40Speaker 6: Every year somebody wants seem for something. Maybe he might
- 39:43Speaker 6: want to look at what he brings and make it
- 39:45Speaker 6: more valuable than you think it is. You know, the
- 39:47Speaker 6: knock on him was he was a poor defender. He
- 39:49Speaker 6: worked hard on that, you know, with Ron Washington out
- 39:53Speaker 6: there and a lot of other infield guys, and you
- 39:55Speaker 6: know he's kind of he's improved a lot defensively. He
- 39:59Speaker 6: can play a lot of place. Since Bar shows a
- 40:01Speaker 6: guy that you allow, Man, there's a baseball player, you
- 40:03Speaker 6: start looking at these. I thought the Weaver trade for
- 40:05Speaker 6: Pittsburgh was under the radar, was a great trade that
- 40:09Speaker 6: you know, if you can't do certain other things, you
- 40:11Speaker 6: can shorten the game and make leeds matter. When you
- 40:14Speaker 6: can make leeds matter late in the game, the MORALEI
- 40:17Speaker 6: or club really picks up.
- 40:20Speaker 7: Now you talked about the Luisa Rice trade. How fearful
- 40:23Speaker 7: you as a manager when you're moving three guys essentially
- 40:28Speaker 7: out of position to bring one guy in.
- 40:32Speaker 6: Well, you know, I think it's a great pat on
- 40:36Speaker 6: the back for Harper. He's willing to move to left
- 40:39Speaker 6: field or right field, the first base, maybe d h
- 40:41Speaker 6: a little bit. You know, some people thought he was
- 40:44Speaker 6: going to be a catcher at one time. We'd forget
- 40:46Speaker 6: about that, but he's you know, I guarantee you at
- 40:48Speaker 6: some point they asked him about that because I know
- 40:51Speaker 6: how Dave and Donnie work over there. You know, they
- 40:54Speaker 6: do it the way it's supposed to be done. And
- 40:56Speaker 6: he just said, yeah, hey, you get him and make
- 40:58Speaker 6: our club better. Let's go. If they had never played
- 41:01Speaker 6: there before, I feel differently, but they played there before.
- 41:05Speaker 6: And when someone does something to help the team as
- 41:08Speaker 6: a whole, it seems to rub off on everybody that
- 41:11Speaker 6: nobody's better, nothing's beneath anybody. You saw it some with
- 41:15Speaker 6: Devers and some other things, because they became a negative
- 41:18Speaker 6: narrative around him because you know, whether it was fair
- 41:21Speaker 6: or not that he wasn't willing to do something to
- 41:23Speaker 6: make the team better. But I think it's fine, I
- 41:26Speaker 6: really do. They've done their homework and they I think
- 41:28Speaker 6: Harper is the one that makes it work.
- 41:31Speaker 5: Buck is a manager on a team, and you've been
- 41:34Speaker 5: in situations where you can win and lose. Do you
- 41:38Speaker 5: accept it if your front office comes you and says, hey,
- 41:40Speaker 5: we couldn't really make that big trade, right or hey
- 41:43Speaker 5: that's the best we could do. Or do you go
- 41:45Speaker 5: to your GM and say, damn it, I wish you
- 41:47Speaker 5: could have done more, because, like you said, it energizes
- 41:50Speaker 5: the room, It energizes the coaches, it energized what's the
- 41:53Speaker 5: is in today's game? Is it different than it used
- 41:56Speaker 5: to be? Or does it still matter what the manager says, Hey,
- 42:00Speaker 5: I wish you would have done more.
- 42:01Speaker 6: Yeah, that's a good question. The way I looked at
- 42:04Speaker 6: it was, it's not my job, okay if they asked
- 42:07Speaker 6: my input on something, this guy or that guy. You know,
- 42:10Speaker 6: some of the best deals are when someone comes to
- 42:13Speaker 6: you and you go, hey, this guy's really having trouble
- 42:15Speaker 6: on his workday. He's starting to really go the other way.
- 42:17Speaker 6: We traded Omar Doll with the Kurt Shilling deal years
- 42:20Speaker 6: ago because our pitcher told our GM that this guy
- 42:24Speaker 6: was starting to go the other way. You know, he
- 42:26Speaker 6: wasn't able to make his workday. When you listen to
- 42:28Speaker 6: those guys about you can get ahead of some things.
- 42:30Speaker 6: But that's not your job. You know what your job is,
- 42:33Speaker 6: a j Your job is to go in there are guys,
- 42:35Speaker 6: we have so much confidence in you, and we could
- 42:38Speaker 6: have done this. I've heard some sometimes I've told guys
- 42:41Speaker 6: who are complaining a little bit, I go, wait a minute,
- 42:42Speaker 6: we could have made that deal, but it was for you.
- 42:46Speaker 6: We could have traded you for that guy. By the way,
- 42:48Speaker 6: And I don't want to hear the stuff about the Dodgers.
- 42:50Speaker 6: Everybody had their shot at schooable. If you were willing
- 42:52Speaker 6: to give up players, you could have got Schooble too. Okay,
- 42:56Speaker 6: So I don't want to hear about the Dodgers being,
- 43:00Speaker 6: you know, at fault or something. They had the prospects,
- 43:03Speaker 6: they had the people, and they had the willingness to
- 43:05Speaker 6: do it, and their debt could withstand the subtraction of
- 43:08Speaker 6: those players. But no, AJ, your job is to manage
- 43:12Speaker 6: those players. And when when I go on to pres
- 43:15Speaker 6: comms and talk about, oh, man, I hope we do this,
- 43:17Speaker 6: and I hope we do that. We need an outfielder,
- 43:19Speaker 6: what's that saying to those three or four outfielders you got,
- 43:21Speaker 6: what's that saying, hey, we need a catcher to the
- 43:23Speaker 6: catcher you got what's that saying to the bullpen pieces
- 43:26Speaker 6: you have down there and their families and the people
- 43:29Speaker 6: that are you know, living and dying with them every day.
- 43:31Speaker 6: So that's not your job. Your job is to take
- 43:33Speaker 6: whatever they deem. And I look at it. They had
- 43:37Speaker 6: confidence in us that we could get it done with
- 43:39Speaker 6: what we had.
- 43:41Speaker 7: You praised Harper for moving positions, but he came out
- 43:44Speaker 7: and he said it. He said those things about his teammates.
- 43:48Speaker 7: Do you have to say something to your player or
- 43:51Speaker 7: he's the star and you're like, ah, you know what,
- 43:52Speaker 7: We're gonna let him speak what however he wants to speak,
- 43:58Speaker 7: wouldn't you think?
- 43:59Speaker 6: Now, Donnie said, do you know you got to say something?
- 44:01Speaker 6: You can't let that kind of slide. And it's one
- 44:03Speaker 6: of those things every once in a while you forget
- 44:05Speaker 6: about how much weight your words carry, players do, and
- 44:08Speaker 6: you you go, wait a minute. I didn't think about
- 44:11Speaker 6: the people that reflected on. Yeah, I want to win,
- 44:14Speaker 6: but guess what, everybody wants to win. The manager wants
- 44:16Speaker 6: to win, Your teammates want to win. And I would
- 44:20Speaker 6: have said, yeah, you know, we could have done that
- 44:22Speaker 6: for you if you'd trade, if you'd waived the no
- 44:24Speaker 6: trade contract. We could probably made that deal. Oh no,
- 44:27Speaker 6: I don't want you trade me.
- 44:30Speaker 7: That's not what I meant.
- 44:31Speaker 5: Hang on, hang on, yeah, wait a minute, you gout.
- 44:34Speaker 6: You've been traded, right? What did it feel like? How
- 44:36Speaker 6: many times you've been traded at the deadline?
- 44:38Speaker 7: I loved getting traded because I was always getting traded
- 44:40Speaker 7: from Triple A to the big league, So that that
- 44:43Speaker 7: works out for me. I love to get except my
- 44:45Speaker 7: family had a move. But we're not talking about those
- 44:48Speaker 7: types of trades. Those those aren't even talked about on FT.
- 44:51Speaker 7: But what is talked about is the Scoogal trade and
- 44:54Speaker 7: you kind of mentioned it there. How much does this
- 44:58Speaker 7: impact your view of how other teams truly view winning,
- 45:04Speaker 7: the fact that the Dodgers are the team that came
- 45:07Speaker 7: out on top.
- 45:09Speaker 6: Well, there's always that extra player that everybody's asking for,
- 45:13Speaker 6: and at some point Detroit's gonna line them all up
- 45:15Speaker 6: and they're gonna go, Okay, what's the best deal? Or
- 45:18Speaker 6: sometimes the best deal you make is the one you
- 45:20Speaker 6: don't make. Is there any deal there that we would make? Okay,
- 45:23Speaker 6: there's none of them we like, Okay, we're not going
- 45:25Speaker 6: to do it. You got to be willing to walk away.
- 45:27Speaker 6: But at some point they were willing to give up
- 45:30Speaker 6: the pieces better than other people. You know, in the
- 45:34Speaker 6: minds of Detroit, you know their evaluation. So yeah, I
- 45:38Speaker 6: don't know if there's a team in baseball that couldn't
- 45:40Speaker 6: have given the pieces to acquire him. Okay, it's just
- 45:45Speaker 6: a matter are you willing to do it? And let
- 45:46Speaker 6: me ask you, guys a question. You think that you
- 45:48Speaker 6: think the Dodgers are going to sign and do what
- 45:50Speaker 6: it takes to sign him. At the end of the year,
- 45:51Speaker 6: you're also gaining the rights to him, you know. I
- 45:55Speaker 6: like their chances and what that means in twenty twenty
- 45:59Speaker 6: seven with the at a lockout, who knows. And I
- 46:01Speaker 6: think there's some clubs kind of maneuvering around because of
- 46:04Speaker 6: the lockout potential too. I think that, let's be honest,
- 46:07Speaker 6: I think that affects some of this.
- 46:10Speaker 5: Of course, but I love that it gives Trek Scubo
- 46:12Speaker 5: a chance. And people are gonna hate this, but it
- 46:14Speaker 5: gives him a chance to see the Dodgers of close
- 46:16Speaker 5: and personal, and the Dodgers make great impressions on people.
- 46:19Speaker 5: And if they win, he's gonna say, man, I really
- 46:21Speaker 5: loved La. I love the weather, I love this, I
- 46:24Speaker 5: love that, and I love the movies.
- 46:26Speaker 6: The right he's in California, right.
- 46:29Speaker 5: Yeah, northern California, though I thought, big difference.
- 46:34Speaker 6: You know, I've become real biased over the years about
- 46:39Speaker 6: regionally looking at players. Those are there's a there's a
- 46:43Speaker 6: part of California. I had so much luck with players
- 46:45Speaker 6: for some reason. They were really good baseball players.
- 46:50Speaker 5: It wasn't Orlando. It wasn't Orlando. Book, So it's fine, there's.
- 46:53Speaker 6: Some good ones there. If you get outside of Orlando.
- 46:56Speaker 6: You got to get outside the hub. Yeah, outside the hub.
- 47:00Speaker 5: Apparently not because you never acquired me. So apparently you would.
- 47:03Speaker 6: They wouldn't.
- 47:04Speaker 5: Apparently not.
- 47:04Speaker 6: They wouldn't give them a heartbeat.
- 47:07Speaker 5: Apparently not. But the reason I bring this up is Brewers. Okay,
- 47:12Speaker 5: And I keep and I keep harping on this. And
- 47:14Speaker 5: as a fan of baseball and a fan of Pat
- 47:17Speaker 5: Murphy and Matt Arnold and the Brewers, and you mentioned
- 47:20Speaker 5: a little bit they didn't give up the players. What
- 47:24Speaker 5: you would you want them to give up the players
- 47:26Speaker 5: as a fan of baseball. Just because everyone is pushing
- 47:28Speaker 5: this Dodgers narrative, Dodgers Dodgers Dodgers. Do you want to
- 47:32Speaker 5: don't you as a fan of the game, and this
- 47:34Speaker 5: is where I'm coming from, Man, I wish the Brewers
- 47:37Speaker 5: of the Rays would have given up that player just
- 47:39Speaker 5: to see if they could slay the dragon as the
- 47:42Speaker 5: David verus Goliath whatever however you want to put it right,
- 47:45Speaker 5: don't you, as a fan of the game, say, Man,
- 47:47Speaker 5: I wish they would have given up that guy to
- 47:49Speaker 5: if that would have got it done?
- 47:51Speaker 6: At what price? You know they know who the are
- 47:54Speaker 6: and the not ye not.
- 47:56Speaker 5: Your number one not your number one guy.
- 48:00Speaker 6: AJ How'd you feel when CC Sabbati went over to
- 48:03Speaker 6: the Brewers, Remember that.
- 48:04Speaker 5: I liked it because I was in Nail Central, so
- 48:07Speaker 5: I was like, oh, I don't have to face them
- 48:08Speaker 5: six times a year. I'm happy with this exactly. I
- 48:11Speaker 5: was actually there the night he got traded. He was
- 48:13Speaker 5: in Chicago, and I remember seeing him on the cart.
- 48:15Speaker 5: He was going past me and I was walking out.
- 48:18Speaker 5: We know each other, and I was like, CC, man,
- 48:19Speaker 5: good luck. He's like, you're happy, aren't you. I'm like, hell, yeah,
- 48:22Speaker 5: I'm happy. I don't have to face you thirty times
- 48:24Speaker 5: a year every year now.
- 48:26Speaker 6: But that's That's a good example, I think very close
- 48:29Speaker 6: to you know, CC was that good and to move
- 48:32Speaker 6: like that, another left hander going to Brewers. But you know, yeah,
- 48:36Speaker 6: as a fan, you'd like to see it happen. But
- 48:38Speaker 6: you also can rally the troops and say, you know,
- 48:40Speaker 6: we can still do this. You know, it's it's it's
- 48:43Speaker 6: it's it's when you earn your key. AJ. The way
- 48:46Speaker 6: I looked at it, you really got to accept the
- 48:50Speaker 6: challenge of keeping that clubhouse going. Usually what happens when
- 48:53Speaker 6: you make a really big acquisition, you have two or
- 48:57Speaker 6: three games where you're not very good, and then on
- 49:00Speaker 6: the flip side of it, the Tigers will probably run
- 49:02Speaker 6: off five or six wins in a row. You know,
- 49:05Speaker 6: there's always that thing that goes, man, shall we have
- 49:06Speaker 6: waited a little bit longer or whatever? And uh, you know,
- 49:10Speaker 6: some people in the conspiracy theories thinks that he went
- 49:14Speaker 6: to the Dodgers because of the potential lockout with the owners.
- 49:19Speaker 6: There's so much stuff out there right now. I try
- 49:21Speaker 6: not to listen to it, but I you know, hey,
- 49:23Speaker 6: good for the Dodgers. Good for the Dodgers.
- 49:26Speaker 7: You listen to FT all the time. You heard Scott
- 49:28Speaker 7: talking about that, so you're you're.
- 49:30Speaker 6: What does FT stand for? Yeah? You got You guys
- 49:34Speaker 6: are in a generation where everything's in abbreviation. Come on,
- 49:38Speaker 6: you know it's I used to have the analytic guys
- 49:40Speaker 6: and go listen, just say it, say the words. What
- 49:43Speaker 6: does it stand for? And they'd go, oh, you know,
- 49:45Speaker 6: I don't really know what it stands for. It's uh
- 49:47Speaker 6: exit velocity means FT. Okay, I got it. Now y'all
- 49:51Speaker 6: are losing me. I was going, what were they talking about?
- 49:53Speaker 5: But don't have any You must not have any kids
- 49:55Speaker 5: that are their teenage to twenty five year olds, because
- 49:58Speaker 5: my daughter and my son that's all they they have words,
- 50:01Speaker 5: and I am I'm sure crowds has to go through
- 50:02Speaker 5: this too. There are times crouts where I look at
- 50:05Speaker 5: my daughter and she's talking about squids and ferdas and
- 50:08Speaker 5: mouse and bows and it's all college words, and I'm like,
- 50:10Speaker 5: can you please explain what the hell you're talking about?
- 50:13Speaker 5: MoG's mogging? What are we talking about? Talk English?
- 50:17Speaker 6: Scott, the the abbreviations and the text and stuff. I'm
- 50:22Speaker 6: you know, and then the pictures come in and the
- 50:24Speaker 6: emojis and stuff. I'm going, God, can anybody just spell.
- 50:29Speaker 7: No, wait, hang on, hang on, talk about shortening things.
- 50:33Speaker 7: I don't mean to disrespect you here, Buck, but I
- 50:36Speaker 7: don't think your name was Buck when you were born.
- 50:39Speaker 5: So your generation, you know the things you have.
- 50:41Speaker 6: To Another trade I liked. Do you know the yes
- 50:46Speaker 6: William to continue? Oh?
- 50:48Speaker 5: Will I didn't know it was William.
- 50:50Speaker 6: You know that there's a William Nathaniel the fifth. Think
- 50:53Speaker 6: about the pressure on that poor kid right now. As
- 50:59Speaker 6: my son told me, I was hoping he would name
- 51:02Speaker 6: something else. No, it wasn't wasn't. No good trade. You know.
- 51:07Speaker 6: The deal I love is the deal that Toronto made.
- 51:10Speaker 6: They're more than likely out of it, but they made
- 51:12Speaker 6: a deal for next year. That's a really good acquisition.
- 51:17Speaker 6: Very quietly, uh uh. He's pitched very well for Anaheim
- 51:21Speaker 6: this year or the Angels whatever they're calling them nowadays.
- 51:25Speaker 6: Soriano really great year. Have y'all kept up with him
- 51:28Speaker 6: this year? He's been solid.
- 51:30Speaker 7: He has been solid. Who hasn't been solid the Mets.
- 51:34Speaker 7: When you see all these guys getting traded from the Mets,
- 51:37Speaker 7: do you feel like when you get out of the
- 51:40Speaker 7: limelight or the just everything that involves New York. Some
- 51:44Speaker 7: of these players have a sense of relief because you
- 51:49Speaker 7: had that things didn't go successfully. Everybody wants to be successful.
- 51:53Speaker 7: But when you leave there, do you think these players
- 51:55Speaker 7: have a certain weight that comes off their show.
- 52:02Speaker 6: I don't know. You'd have to ask the players. I
- 52:04Speaker 6: know only from a manager or coach standpoint, and there's
- 52:07Speaker 6: some challenges there. You may not have another place, but
- 52:10Speaker 6: I'm going to take that. I think we know the
- 52:12Speaker 6: answer that question. Sometimes, you know, to go from a
- 52:15Speaker 6: team that's struggling to a team that's right in the
- 52:17Speaker 6: middle of the Pennant race, you know, gets your juices
- 52:19Speaker 6: going again. You know, this time of year, I think
- 52:22Speaker 6: about the families a lot. I think about the traveling secretaries.
- 52:25Speaker 6: Can you imagine, you guys, what's going on this time
- 52:29Speaker 6: of year trying to get people here, there and what
- 52:31Speaker 6: have you. Because I found that when you're going to
- 52:33Speaker 6: a losing team, they take an extra day or two
- 52:35Speaker 6: to get there. When you're going to a winning team,
- 52:37Speaker 6: they're there that night. And there's a lot of movement
- 52:42Speaker 6: going around right now. But it's a tough time. I mean, gosh,
- 52:45Speaker 6: I can't tell how many times emotionally I've had players
- 52:48Speaker 6: in my office. What hurts is when a guy walks
- 52:50Speaker 6: in said I've been traded. You don't even know about it?
- 52:52Speaker 6: You go, oh really, and they think that you're a
- 52:55Speaker 6: kid and like you don't know about it?
- 52:56Speaker 7: I don't.
- 52:57Speaker 6: I don't think they realize how little managers input they
- 53:00Speaker 6: have in today's game with these things. And maybe lightfully
- 53:04Speaker 6: so I don't know.
- 53:06Speaker 5: All right, Buck, Before before I let you go, I
- 53:08Speaker 5: got to ask you this question because only you will
- 53:10Speaker 5: give me an honest answer to this question, and you
- 53:13Speaker 5: probably won't answer it all. Is there a little bit
- 53:15Speaker 5: of you? And you've been on different managers of different teams,
- 53:19Speaker 5: and I was on different plays, and I played for
- 53:20Speaker 5: different teams and teams you got rid of me or
- 53:22Speaker 5: move me on? When you see a team that you
- 53:24Speaker 5: were on before and they're not doing so good that
- 53:27Speaker 5: you're kind of in the back of your mind you say,
- 53:29Speaker 5: you know what I told you, so you should have
- 53:31Speaker 5: kept me around.
- 53:34Speaker 6: Uh, my wife might do that. I try not to.
- 53:40Speaker 6: You know, that's an emotion AJ that you know at
- 53:44Speaker 6: my age, you know, it just eats you up if
- 53:47Speaker 6: you do that. I've got good people there. I hate
- 53:49Speaker 6: to see you, know. I was talking to Pete yesterday
- 53:52Speaker 6: April asked at the Baltimore game Alonzo, and uh, he's
- 53:55Speaker 6: so happy with the way things are going there for him.
- 53:58Speaker 6: And you know, I text with you know, you see
- 54:02Speaker 6: people struggling. You don't want to see him struggle. Life
- 54:04Speaker 6: seem short. But those emotions are easy to have privately,
- 54:10Speaker 6: but it doesn't do you mighty good to put them
- 54:12Speaker 6: out there publicly. That's that for a good answer.
- 54:16Speaker 5: Good, Yeah, that's that was dodging the question like that
- 54:18Speaker 5: was dodging the question one on one by book show author.
- 54:21Speaker 6: Well, you asked my my wife, My wife has a buck.
- 54:25Speaker 5: I don't know about your wife. My wife does the
- 54:27Speaker 5: enneagram thing where she's like picture number. You have to
- 54:30Speaker 5: do this like test and it gives you a number
- 54:32Speaker 5: like you're a number two and it describes your personal
- 54:35Speaker 5: I would love to see who you are. So I'm
- 54:36Speaker 5: an eight on Enneagram.
- 54:38Speaker 7: Okay.
- 54:38Speaker 5: AID is like super you know, super like out there,
- 54:41Speaker 5: super forceful. Doesn't forget grudges ever. Let people know.
- 54:46Speaker 6: About the highest numbers.
- 54:49Speaker 5: No, but it doesn't matter the number it's or the
- 54:52Speaker 5: high like the higher number. Right, But AID is like
- 54:55Speaker 5: super confrontational shocker that I'm that right, tells people how
- 54:58Speaker 5: they feel ever, lets grudges go. So my wife's always like, oh,
- 55:02Speaker 5: you're an eight because there's people that wronged me forty
- 55:04Speaker 5: years ago. And I'm like, I'm gonna get you right.
- 55:07Speaker 5: So that's how.
- 55:08Speaker 1: I've been married.
- 55:10Speaker 6: New years we've been married.
- 55:11Speaker 5: You're we on right now, what the twenties going on?
- 55:13Speaker 5: Twenty seven years?
- 55:14Speaker 6: Buck, she must be an eight to two?
- 55:17Speaker 5: Then no, she's not too.
- 55:20Speaker 7: I'll try.
- 55:21Speaker 6: I'll try to speed this up. When I was with
- 55:22Speaker 6: the Dinmonbacks, Jerry Clangelo said, listen, we've used this brain doctor,
- 55:26Speaker 6: doctor John nead Noggle from cal Berkeley. I think it
- 55:29Speaker 6: was to help us make draft picks. Steve Nash, Jason Kidd,
- 55:33Speaker 6: you know some pretty good draft picks. He goes, Hey,
- 55:35Speaker 6: just talk to him. He basically four letters, you know,
- 55:40Speaker 6: judgmental everything. And he'd give everybody a brain type. There
- 55:43Speaker 6: were sixteen basic brain types and it was amazing. I
- 55:47Speaker 6: used him for tie breakers in the Expansion draft because
- 55:50Speaker 6: he would say he would say nothing about their playing ability,
- 55:53Speaker 6: but he'd talk about their brain type. Like he gave me.
- 55:56Speaker 6: We were trying to acquire Matt Williams in the trade
- 55:59Speaker 6: and he told me who's brain he was like he
- 56:01Speaker 6: wasn't the same guy, but you know how they would
- 56:03Speaker 6: handle pressure. So at the very end he said, hey,
- 56:05Speaker 6: I got something to tell you. He said, your brain type.
- 56:08Speaker 6: There's only there's two of you in the organization, you
- 56:11Speaker 6: and the owner, and one of you is going to
- 56:13Speaker 6: have to see to the other one. I go, what, John,
- 56:16Speaker 6: fascinating guy. I loved John, but it was quite an
- 56:20Speaker 6: exercise that I have to look at yourself and hear
- 56:23Speaker 6: somebody critique you like that. He's still around, I think John.
- 56:27Speaker 6: But he was great in the draft. He was one
- 56:30Speaker 6: of the reasons we wanted to go after Kurt Shilling.
- 56:33Speaker 6: He loved Kurt's brain type. Steve Finley, he loved Steve Finley,
- 56:39Speaker 6: he loved There were some guys that we moved Damian Miller.
- 56:42Speaker 6: He loved Damien's brain type. And they were all some
- 56:46Speaker 6: of them were different, but you knew what type of
- 56:48Speaker 6: stimuli they responded to. Okay, I'm done. I'd love to
- 56:51Speaker 6: have him do to your brain type.
- 56:53Speaker 1: He found some gems here.
- 56:55Speaker 5: I like it.
- 56:56Speaker 8: Well.
- 56:56Speaker 2: Fuck, always a pleasure. Good to catch up. We'll catch
- 56:59Speaker 2: you all right, We'll take care. Thanks for having too.
- 57:03Speaker 5: Thank you back h
