- 0:25Now, here's Pastor Ed to take us into our study.
- 0:32If you have your Bibles, would you open in the John's gospel
- 0:35chapter, 19? so we take today to commemorate,
- 0:41What has been known as Good Friday.
- 0:44It's good in many ways for us after the fact that it wasn't
- 0:47good for Jesus and his disciples, a very difficult day
- 0:51and they have great pain. Great sorrow.
- 0:55You think in your own life as you personalized today?
- 0:59Can you think of a time in your life of great pain?
- 1:02I mean, of course we can, I mean there's times of great physical
- 1:06pain, there's times of great personal pain, Maybe?
- 1:11Divorce or abandonment, grief. Good Friday is known as God's
- 1:18most painful moment. The most painful moment that
- 1:22Jesus experience for sure. It says, in verse 1 of chapter,
- 1:2719, that pilate took Jesus and scourged him the soldiers,
- 1:33Twisted, a crown of thorns and put it on his head and they put
- 1:37on him a purple robe. They said, hail King of the Jews
- 1:42and they struck him with their hands.
- 1:46Pilot goes out again and says, behold, I'm bringing him out to
- 1:49you that, you may know that I find no fault in him.
- 1:54Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe
- 1:57and pilate said to them. Behold the man therefore when
- 2:02the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out
- 2:05saying, Crucify him, crucify him and pilate said, you take him
- 2:12and crucify him for I find no fault in him.
- 2:18The scourging was a whipping, the usual instrument was a short
- 2:24whip several single or braided leather thongs attached to it
- 2:28variable lengths. In the leather, there were small
- 2:32iron balls or sharp pieces of sheet bones that were tied at
- 2:36different intervals. And the man that was being
- 2:39crucified or the man that was being scourged would be stripped
- 2:43of his clothing and his hands were tied to an upright post.
- 2:47So that That his entire back side and his legs were then
- 2:50beaten, sometimes you might hear that referred to as being
- 2:53flawed, the scourging was intended to weaken the victim to
- 2:59get them just sort of collapse so that they would confess their
- 3:04crime and crucifixion could be avoided.
- 3:08It's Roman soldiers, repeatedly struck the victims back with
- 3:11full force that iron balls would cause deep contusions and the
- 3:17leather thongs and the Sheep bones would cut into the skin
- 3:21and the subcutaneous issues and the lacerations would tear into
- 3:25the skeletal muscles. It was a very vicious vicious
- 3:30time and almost always a man would die under this not having
- 3:34to go to the cross and yet the Bible speaks to us that Jesus.
- 3:38Do it to the end. He endured the beating and then
- 3:42would take up, pick up and take up his cross carrying its full
- 3:46load on his beat up body. This is what they're crying for
- 3:52this innocent men. And we don't know how many
- 3:56voices are included here, that just a week, prior were crying
- 4:00out. The, the other word.
- 4:02That's more encouraging Hosanna, Hosanna blessed, is he who comes
- 4:07in the name of the Lord? Perhaps there's some overlap
- 4:10certainly in the city of Jerusalem, they've been talking
- 4:13about it and excited on the one hand and now just within a week
- 4:18they're crying out, crucify him, crucify him.
- 4:22Crucifixion was invited by the Persians.
- 4:26A horrible way to die. They believed that the Earth was
- 4:28sacred. So because of that, the criminal
- 4:31was lifted up off of the earth so that he would die in midair
- 4:36and not to file the Earth. Crucifixion, it said is one of
- 4:41the most terrible and the cruelest death, which man has
- 4:44ever devised for taking Vengeance on his fellow man.
- 4:50Cicero's called it, the most cruel, and most horrible torture
- 4:56and tacitus called it a torture. That's only fit for slaves.
- 5:00The Persians invented it, but the Romans perfected it.
- 5:04The Romans used it in its full force.
- 5:08The first century. It's estimated that the Romans
- 5:11crucified 30,000 Jews. It was a horrible way to die,
- 5:17and it sent a message. It wasn't simply the act of
- 5:21punishing a criminal or accused criminal.
- 5:23It also was a way to send a message to establish Roman
- 5:29government and the Rome Roman authority of the day Rome.
- 5:33Kept it exclusivity for Rebels runaway slaves and the lowest
- 5:38type type of criminal. It was such a cruel way to die
- 5:41that they didn't use it on citizens.
- 5:43So crucifixion, if you think of Jesus would involve him laying
- 5:49laying Jesus on his open lacerated bleeding back on this
- 5:55huge rough piece of wood. There's some debate on whether
- 5:59the crossbeam was honored yet or not but that would start with
- 6:04laying him on wood and the Roman soldiers would then take spikes
- 6:07in that cross. five to seven inches long, Hammer them between
- 6:11the two arm, bones at the wrist, crushing the medial nerve, And
- 6:17as one dictionary describes it, the pain was absolutely
- 6:21unbearable. With each blow already on on top
- 6:26of being scourged. In fact, it was the pain was so
- 6:30unbearable that it was beyond words that in the in the time
- 6:34was beyond words that they had to describe the pain.
- 6:37So they invented a pain, a word to describe that pain, that a
- 6:41word that we will use ourselves to describe much less pain.
- 6:46But I know after hearing this word, you'll never think of it
- 6:49the same when, you know, its origin and they use the word
- 6:54excruciating to describe this pain, literally out of the Cross
- 6:59pain from the cross. And at this point, after the
- 7:05bones after the 7 inch long spikes were used, Jesus was
- 7:11hoisted as the crossbar attached to the vertical steak and nails
- 7:14were driven through Jesus feet. And again, the nerves in his
- 7:18feet, would have been crushed, just excruciating pain.
- 7:23A man would die either by asphyxiation or Cardiac Arrest
- 7:27as they hang there. it's all here in the scriptures, although
- 7:32we don't have the Full details of in John 19.
- 7:38It says and he bearing his cross went out to the place called the
- 7:42place of the skull which is called in Hebrew Golgotha and
- 7:46they crucified him and to others with him on either side and
- 7:50Jesus in the center. Now, pie that wrote a title and
- 7:54put on the cross and the right. And the writing was Jesus of
- 7:57Nazareth. Nazareth, the king of the Jews.
- 8:00You know, they crucified along the roads.
- 8:03I know one of the famous hymns. Starts out on a hill far away,
- 8:08it could be on a hill far away if that hill was next to a road
- 8:12because they wanted everyone that was doing business and
- 8:16living life and going on there they they wanted them to see
- 8:21what what a criminal's death look like.
- 8:26And here he is. Taken to a place.
- 8:32Known as Golgotha will be in Israel.
- 8:34Not too long from now and the final stop on.
- 8:37Israel is one of the sites that has great evidence pointing that
- 8:42it's very well could be the possible place of the
- 8:45crucifixion and we'll go out to the edge of the property and we
- 8:49can look out over on a small hill.
- 8:51That was outside the city Gates and a road would go by there and
- 8:55there's even some vestiges of what looks like a skull still in
- 9:00the eroded. Landscape of that area.
- 9:04Whether it's the exact place or not is really irrelevant as much
- 9:07as you know, that Jesus was crucified.
- 9:11He exchanged his life for yours. And because we have the
- 9:17privilege of living in such comfort and ease and because we
- 9:19have the privilege of gathering together and worshipping
- 9:22together and it becomes a very repetitive constant continual
- 9:27thing. We forget. things that come easy
- 9:30to us, we forget Things that we don't pay attention to.
- 9:34We forget things that we don't take note of, we forget So God
- 9:40has reserved the time throughout the year for us to really laser
- 9:44focus, our mind and our attention on this exchange.
- 9:50The Bible says, in second Corinthians 5 verse 21, for he
- 9:54made him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become
- 9:58the righteousness of God in him. Jesus suffers in silence
- 10:04throughout all of his interrogation and all of the, in
- 10:08the torture and Agony. The Bible describes that
- 10:14prophetically, in Isaiah 53, when it says that Jesus was
- 10:19oppressed and Afflicted. Yet he opened, not his mouth, he
- 10:24was led as a lamb to the slaughter and as a sheep before,
- 10:27it's Shearer's is silent. So he opened not his mouth.
- 10:32And when the weight of humanity sends was poured out upon him.
- 10:35He cries out. My God, my God, why have you
- 10:39forsaken me? You know, the word, forsaken
- 10:42literally means deserted and Abandoned and rejected.
- 10:48And these words are shocking to us.
- 10:51They disarm us because we cause it, they cause us to wonder what
- 10:55did Jesus really mean by that? It's hard for us as human beings
- 11:00to Fathom. What was taking place here?
- 11:02You know, it's like Good Friday starts are thinking like we're
- 11:06on Holy Ground as we consider the significance of the
- 11:09crucifixion of Jesus, the impact of that day.
- 11:14On our lives is so significant that it truly does require us to
- 11:20take a day just to look at it. If we get a better understanding
- 11:24of what Jesus actually went through for us.
- 11:28It'll revolutionize Our Lives. It's what incredible pain that
- 11:34he experienced. Gives us a greater appreciation
- 11:36for the accomplishment of calvary.
- 11:39You know, when Jesus is crying out, my God, my God.
- 11:42Why have you forsaken me? These aren't delusions of a man
- 11:45in pain. This isn't a time where Jesus
- 11:48faith is failing him. I believe is Jesus was hanging
- 11:53there at that moment. He was bearing the sins of the
- 11:55world. It's easy to think about the
- 11:58sins of the world, but in order to understand that you got to
- 12:01think that you just got to shift your thinking a little bit.
- 12:03And go though, he was bearing the weight of my sin.
- 12:09My life. And I know it can be challenging
- 12:12at times to think about Sin, especially as it relates to our
- 12:17own lives. But that's the reality.
- 12:20He was dying as a substitute for you, and for me, for us, he was
- 12:26burying your sin and mine see in a theological God's perspective
- 12:34of the cross. To him was being imputed all of
- 12:40the guilt of all of our sins, as he suffered, the necessary
- 12:44punishment, for those sins on our behalf.
- 12:50The justice of God is that sin would be dealt with and I had
- 12:56this question. Come up last Sunday, actually,
- 13:01thinking about, where's the justice?
- 13:03That was the question. Where's the Justice in an
- 13:07innocent man dying? That was a great question.
- 13:13My approach to this young man was, let's just make sure we
- 13:16understand that we have the right definition of justice.
- 13:20Because Justice doesn't flow through your emotions.
- 13:24And Justice doesn't isn't defined by how you would do
- 13:27things. If you were God, Justice is
- 13:29defined by the very character of God.
- 13:32And he was very early on even beginning In the Garden of Eden.
- 13:35He would Define for us Justice that without the shedding of
- 13:39blood, there will be no forgiveness of sin.
- 13:44So Justice can only be meted out for your sin and mine if there's
- 13:48blood shed God to find it. And it's best to ask that
- 13:53question from a different angle. It's not.
- 13:57Where's the Justice in an innocent man for your life and
- 14:01mine? Where's the Justice in that?
- 14:02The real question is, why would God go to Such Great Lengths to
- 14:07express his judge Justice in your life?
- 14:11Exactly. What have you and I done to
- 14:12deserve the Forgiveness of our sins and what's what ground?
- 14:18We stand on that. We can look to God and demand
- 14:21his Justice or demand his provision. you see Jesus as
- 14:25they're paying the price for you, because he is fulfilling
- 14:29all Justice and righteousness, it required innocent blood,
- 14:36Justice requires innocent blood so that you and I might
- 14:40experience not justice, but Grace The grace of God.
- 14:47Punishment was being poured out, God's Wrath against Sinners was
- 14:53being poured out on the cross and in some mysterious way that
- 14:57we can ever really fully understand during these awful
- 15:01hours on the cross. The father was pouring out this
- 15:04full measure of his wrath against sin and the recipient of
- 15:07that wrath was God's own son, Jesus.
- 15:11Parents, you understand this? There's nothing you wouldn't do
- 15:16to stand in the gap for your kids.
- 15:18Nothing. There's nothing you wouldn't do
- 15:21to in some way. Put yourself In Harm's Way or in
- 15:25some way, take the pain of your kids or some way stand in the
- 15:29Gap to prevent something happening with your kids.
- 15:32You would do it. Very naturally very Very
- 15:37willingly. And so listen.
- 15:40God was punishing Jesus. As if he had personally
- 15:44committed every Wicked deed committed by every Wicked sinner
- 15:49Among Us and in so doing he could treat and forgive those
- 15:54redeemed ones as if we now live in Christ.
- 15:59I think Good Friday. If there's anything we leave
- 16:01with besides the solemn, this of the death of Jesus is a full
- 16:06understanding that your life is a gift from God.
- 16:10And your life matters not to do your own thing and to make your
- 16:14own way and to dismiss, you know, chart your own course and
- 16:18be the captain of your own ship and all the different sayings
- 16:21that said today. But your life belongs to God,
- 16:25it's been bought by the blood of Jesus Christ and the value of
- 16:29your life is so much more than anything this world could offer.
- 16:36Sin produces separation, it separates friends from Friends,
- 16:41it separates parents from kids, it separates people from people,
- 16:46you know, families and here, there's even separation in a
- 16:50brief moment from the Son and the father, why?
- 16:53Because the Bible says God can't look upon sin.
- 16:56In habakkuk, it says, you are of purer eyes than to behold evil.
- 17:00You cannot look on wickedness. Why do you look on those who
- 17:04deal treacherously and hold your tongue?
- 17:06Tongue. When the wicked devours, a
- 17:07person. Jesus was forsaken by God, so
- 17:11that we would never have to be. And Hebrews chapter 13, it says
- 17:16let your conduct be without covetousness, be content with
- 17:20such things as you have for. He himself said, I will never
- 17:23leave you, nor will I forsake you and it's here in John 19 at
- 17:28the at the toward the end where Jesus declares he says.
- 17:33So when Jesus had received the sour wine, he said it is
- 17:38finished and bowing his head, he gave up his Is Spirit.
- 17:47With these words, Jesus declared victory over Satan.
- 17:50It's finished. What?
- 17:51What's finished? Exactly.
- 17:53Well, in One Way. Jesus.
- 17:55Sufferings are finished. And less than a 24-hour period.
- 17:59He had been mooted mutilated beaten shamed spat upon a crown
- 18:04of thorns fashion and twisted into his school.
- 18:07His he was face was covered. He was slapped open handedly.
- 18:11They gambled for his clothes, there was so much going on.
- 18:15He is a his disciples abandoned him.
- 18:18He felt forsaken by the father, it's finished.
- 18:22And what else was finished? Well, the Law's requirements of
- 18:26righteousness. What God required?
- 18:27God provided. What God required?
- 18:31God provided no one but Jesus was capable of keeping the law
- 18:35and he did and what the law could not do in making someone
- 18:38in a taking away the sins from someone Jesus himself.
- 18:43Did the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world and
- 18:49then finally, what was finished. But our Redemption.
- 18:52Our Redemption Jesus death on the cross was once and for all
- 18:56sacrifice, the Bible declares it in Romans for the death, that he
- 19:00died. He died to sin once for all but
- 19:03the life that he lives he lives to God.
- 19:06There's a whole other angle we could take on Good Friday I was
- 19:09thinking of it myself this the maybe one day I'll do it but
- 19:13just thinking about the abandonment of the people that
- 19:16were with Jesus, they just couldn't take it.
- 19:21It was too much for them. And they responded in a very
- 19:24human way and, and they scattered.
- 19:30And I think as you enter into Good Friday and go back to the
- 19:34rest of the day and such because you'll see so quickly life will
- 19:37consume everything. We just listened will be all
- 19:39kinds of activity and things happening that's life.
- 19:42That's, that's how it was, you know, in the time of Jesus, to
- 19:46they live life. It wasn't a church service
- 19:50continually like we might think, but they lived life people moved
- 19:53on. They walked by, they went home.
- 19:56They made dinner tuck the kids, and they did, they lived life.
- 20:01And you too, you and I will live life today.
- 20:05However, I want you to know that many times when you're faced
- 20:08with crisis, you to respond in a human way and you two aren't
- 20:14always happy with how you respond and you to wish it would
- 20:18have been different. And I think that when we
- 20:22remember the crucifixion of Jesus, when we remember his
- 20:25beating and all that he did for us but also speaks to us that he
- 20:30gives fresh hope. Through his death.
- 20:34Your final Act, even even what you're dealing with right now,
- 20:37the final act or the last thing you did that you regret or the
- 20:41issue. That's your carrying into the
- 20:43room today or online or listening in wherever you are.
- 20:46All of that is not that that doesn't get the final word.
- 20:52It's not the final word even though the disciples are living,
- 20:55like this is it. This is the final word.
- 20:58My friend is Crucified My best friend, the one, I the one, I
- 21:03cast my whole life, I gave everything up to follow him, but
- 21:07then when he really needs me the most, I run away, and I
- 21:10abandoned him and then they have to live life.
- 21:14Not knowing he's going to rise again from the dead.
- 21:17They don't know. Even though Jesus told him and
- 21:19told him and told him, even when it happens, there are some that
- 21:23doubt it and don't believe it. It sounds God is God is
- 21:28presented to us just so much in the Bible that we can relate to.
- 21:34But they do change. Jesus he's taken down off the
- 21:38cross and he's buried and that's how everybody goes on with their
- 21:41day. He dies, it's finished, breathes
- 21:44his last, they take him down the rest of the text says, they put
- 21:47him in a tomb and they seal it, and then they move on.
- 21:51And not quite knowing that three days.
- 21:56Life's going to drastically transform.
- 22:00And I give that to you some of you today life that drastic
- 22:03transformation. It's available to you by faith
- 22:06in Jesus Christ. Because you could be here today,
- 22:09just going on about your day and your day, just happened to whoa,
- 22:13whoa. Just, you know, woven to just
- 22:16kind of wandered into a church building for a little while a
- 22:19couple minutes or, you know, turning on your radio dial
- 22:23hearing. Like it's just a brief moment in
- 22:25time, but the brief moments in time can radically change your
- 22:28life. If you will turn to Jesus today,
- 22:31to receive the Forgiveness of your sins, if you will
- 22:35acknowledge the humanity and the brevity of your life and
- 22:39recognize that True Justice is found at the cross and the
- 22:44affirmation of God's love for you is found at the cross and
- 22:48the true definition of sacrifice and it and transformative
- 22:53exchange of life is found at the cross of Jesus Christ.
- 22:58So, father, as we contemplate these things today and always
- 23:03always always, I feel incredibly inadequate at a time, like this
- 23:08to not fully Plumb, the depths of the significance of the
- 23:15crucifixion. But God, I know I'm living out
- 23:18the benefits. Every moment of every day, I
- 23:23live out the grace that Triumph. Over judgment. and I pray as we
- 23:33leave here today with a solemn, reminder of the beating the
- 23:37scourging the crucifixion of our blessed savior that we to, with
- 23:43great anticipation will celebrate The great power of the
- 23:49Resurrection, The Very hinge of the Gospel.
- 23:55Bringing to us, great benefits, and gifts into our lives.
- 24:00So bless your church today as we head out into the rest of life.
- 24:05In Jesus name. Amen.
