- 0:05Do you want to say hello? Hello and welcome to
- 0:08another episode of Abby the Podcast Lady. Today
- 0:12we have a special guest if you're watching the
- 0:14video version. My sweet normie boy is with me,
- 0:17my dog Norman. He is sitting on my lap as I record
- 0:20this at the lake. We are doing another lake cast
- 0:23today and I just wanted to do a little musing
- 0:28about what's going on with Abby Graves Productions
- 0:30lately because we are coming up on a pretty big
- 0:34milestone by the time this airs we will have
- 0:37passed it it's the week of but in August of in
- 0:41August of 2023 is when I really started taking
- 0:45on my first quote -unquote real clients in my
- 0:50podcasting business and this time of year is
- 0:52such a special one for me because it's that yearly
- 0:55milestone of like a huge thing happening in my
- 0:58life. And I just kind of wanted to give you a
- 1:00little background on what that looked like and
- 1:03just kind of have a living journal experience
- 1:06of that to look back on and reminisce and a year
- 1:09from now, look back and realize how different
- 1:10things are. So let's rewind here to January of
- 1:142023. That's when I started my first podcast.
- 1:17That's when I started The Small Town Tourist
- 1:19and I was having so much fun. It was basically
- 1:22just a way for me to keep my audio and speaking
- 1:25skills up after I had left being a radio DJ.
- 1:28And I was having a great time with it. It was
- 1:30basically just interviewing people in their small
- 1:32towns, doing things that I thought were cool
- 1:35and interesting and worthy of sharing with an
- 1:37audience. And I just had a great time making
- 1:39that show and it introduced me to so many cool
- 1:42people. But because I did that, I then met, well,
- 1:45I didn't meet, I already knew her, my friend
- 1:47Liz, who was my doctor at the time, but also
- 1:49running a really cool and unique cut flower farm
- 1:51in St. Joseph. And I had her on the show and
- 1:54she had been thinking about doing a podcast,
- 1:57didn't know how, but I knew how. So we just kind
- 1:59of sat there and I used her as my guinea pig,
- 2:02really, to figure out how can I help other people
- 2:04make podcasts? I never, when I was doing that,
- 2:08I never, ever, ever anticipated it turning into
- 2:12a full blown. business that would be my primary
- 2:15source of income like never in a million years
- 2:18was that the plan it was just literally me knowing
- 2:21how to do something and wanting to help other
- 2:23people do that thing as well because I was having
- 2:25such a great time with it I'm like I can help
- 2:27other people have a great time with it as well
- 2:29so that was super fun and then what happened
- 2:33was we had been working together I wasn't charging
- 2:35her anything I was doing it all for free just
- 2:37because I believed in it she believed in it we
- 2:40believed in each other it was a fun thing to
- 2:41do on the side and she then had her friend Amanda
- 2:45on her show to talk about what Amanda was doing
- 2:48when it came to being a public speaker and being
- 2:51an advocate for ranchers, rural America and agriculture
- 2:54and that sort of thing. And Amanda was on Liz's
- 2:58show and Amanda's like, well, how are you? how
- 3:01are you making this podcast? How are you doing
- 3:03what you're doing? Cause I want to do it too.
- 3:05And that introduced me to Amanda and I had posted
- 3:09something about like helping other people with
- 3:11their podcasts. Cause by that point, after eight
- 3:14months of working with Liz, I had kind of figured
- 3:16out like, okay, here's what it takes to get your
- 3:19podcast off the ground, keep it going, keep consistent
- 3:22with it. What kind of promotional materials are
- 3:24needed for this sort of thing? And so I had posted
- 3:26that I was willing to help people with it. And
- 3:29I was charging such a minuscule amount to do
- 3:33this. And my cousin Megan reached out. A podcast
- 3:37had been on her heart for a very, very long time.
- 3:40And she took a leap of bravery, took a bet on
- 3:43herself. And she reached out to me and she's
- 3:46like, I want to do this. Can you help me? And
- 3:48so I started helping her. So those were my first
- 3:50like real. paying clients and that's what gave
- 3:54me this taste of oh like I can actually I can
- 4:00do this and I thought it was just going to be
- 4:02a part -time thing for a very long time actually
- 4:05at that time I was fully anticipating working
- 4:08my government job for a very long time I'm like
- 4:11I'm just going to do this on the side it'll help
- 4:13me flex that creative muscle but before I knew
- 4:15it I had taken on yet another client in addition
- 4:18to Amanda and Megan. And then that snowballed
- 4:22into yet another client. And before you knew
- 4:25it, I was working not only my 40 hour job a week,
- 4:27but I was also coming home and editing until
- 4:30like the wee hours of the morning trying to get
- 4:32all this extra work done in addition to what
- 4:35I was doing. And it just turned into this beautiful
- 4:38business that I have today. And I was able to
- 4:41go full time with it within nine months of going
- 4:46from that August to the following June. Yeah,
- 4:49that would have been about nine months. And I
- 4:51took it full time with a roster of clients and
- 4:54it was just so amazing. And this time of year
- 4:57really has me nostalgic and in my feels about
- 5:01that process because little Abby, and I say little
- 5:06Abby, it was only a handful of years ago and
- 5:09I'm a 31 year old lady, but I mean, that girl
- 5:14didn't know what she didn't know. And I think
- 5:16we're all on this beautiful journey of like.
- 5:19trying things out and not necessarily knowing
- 5:21what's going to come from it. Like I could have
- 5:24never anticipated being where I'm at today, getting
- 5:26to speak on stage at Podfest about doing what
- 5:30I do, about sharing my ideas, sharing what I've
- 5:33created for people and how I help people and
- 5:35the systems that I use to do that work. Like
- 5:38I could have never imagined sharing that with
- 5:40an audience in Orlando, Florida. I could have
- 5:42never imagined meeting the people that I do.
- 5:44I could have never imagined a roster of clients
- 5:46who I work with, not only across the country,
- 5:49but also the world. I worked with cattle ranchers
- 5:52in Australia on their show. Like I became a worldwide
- 5:57podcast producer. Like I never anticipated that
- 6:01when I just took the simple bet of starting my
- 6:04own podcast. Like I just truly wanted a creative
- 6:08outlet and to share a message that I believed
- 6:10in. And it turned into so many beautiful amazing
- 6:14things so I guess kind of the overall message
- 6:17I have for you on this podcast today is take
- 6:21that bet on yourself because you never know what's
- 6:23gonna happen like truly and I could go on and
- 6:26on about this but I'm not gonna lie to you I
- 6:28didn't charge this camera that I'm recording
- 6:30on and it is flashing yellow at me and it's going
- 6:33hey we're out of battery that's just real life
- 6:36sometimes inspiration strikes and you just got
- 6:38to record when you can with what you have but
- 6:40i just wanted to take some time to reflect on
- 6:43the podcast this week about how far abby graves
- 6:46productions has come in such a short amount of
- 6:49time i'm genuinely excited about where the future
- 6:52is heading mentioning betting on yourself, taking
- 6:55a bet on yourself, starting your show. I do have
- 6:57the bet on your podcast course that is now available
- 7:00through my school platform. If you want to take
- 7:02it there, I am building a separate online community
- 7:05and platform to take it there later. That'll
- 7:08be available for launch later, but I wanted to
- 7:10put it on school, S -K -O -O -L. Link in the
- 7:14show notes below if you wanted to just get right
- 7:16into it right away and didn't want to wait for
- 7:18all the extra community to be built around it.
- 7:20If you're just ready to if you're sitting here
- 7:22going, I need to take the plunge. I need to take
- 7:24the bet on my podcast and just go for it because
- 7:27nothing is nothing's going to come from waiting
- 7:30any longer. If you want to go through that course,
- 7:32it is available. You can get it on school. I'm
- 7:35actually offering a little bit of a discount
- 7:36on it now as it's just kind of hanging out there.
- 7:39The price will be increasing. So now is honestly
- 7:42a great time. time to take advantage of that
- 7:44so go forth if that is something you're interested
- 7:46in but truly if you take nothing else from this
- 7:51show ever take the bet on yourself take a bet
- 7:55on making a podcast because it can turn into
- 7:58some truly amazing opportunities. It can help
- 8:02you meet some truly amazing people in this world
- 8:05and build those connections that you just never
- 8:08know what's going to come from them. If anything
- 8:11comes from it, it could just be a really great
- 8:13friendship or someone in your corner cheering
- 8:15you on, or it could turn into speaking opportunities.
- 8:18You just never know unless you take that bet
- 8:21and start making that podcast. So if you're ready
- 8:24to bet on your podcast, be sure you check out
- 8:26the bet on your podcast course. It is down in.
- 8:29the show notes below or if you want to wait and
- 8:32you're like I don't know about this I'm not quite
- 8:34ready there will be an additional community built
- 8:36for it coming later this year but that's where
- 8:39I'm at going into kind of officially year three
- 8:44of being a podcast producer for other people
- 8:48I know it's like year two of self -employment
- 8:50for me I have very weird timelines and multiple
- 8:53anniversaries, but I'm okay with that because
- 8:55I think life is for the living and worth celebrating.
- 8:58So celebrate those milestones, reflect, look
- 9:02back, think about where you've been and how it's
- 9:04going to shape where you're going because...
- 9:07What gets measured gets managed, as my friend
- 9:09Liz says. And I think it's important to reflect,
- 9:11but also use those reflections to look ahead
- 9:14and plan for big things in the future with big
- 9:17dreams and big goals. And I am working on some
- 9:22of that right now, doing a little journaling
- 9:24work as I'm sitting here podcasting. But yeah,
- 9:27I'm really excited to see where it goes, what
- 9:29new clients come, what new friendships are made.
- 9:32I genuinely love. helping people make their podcasts.
- 9:36Like I was just texting a client today. She's
- 9:38like, ah, it's all in the folder. I don't know.
- 9:40I don't want to do anything with it. I'm like,
- 9:42that's okay. That's what I'm here for. I love
- 9:44making podcasts. So just let me handle this.
- 9:47And it's just so great to work with clients who
- 9:49put their trust in me to make some really amazing
- 9:51content and share some really big ideas. So that's
- 9:55it. That's all I got to say. My camera's literally
- 9:57about to DIE on me. So I'll catch you next week
- 10:01on the next episode of Abby the Podcast Lady.
- 10:04say bye normie bye he's a sweaty boy it is hot
