- 0:00Hey everyone-welcome back to The Science of Leading.
- 0:02I'm Claire Monroe, and as always...
- 0:04I'm here with the one and only Edwin Carrington.
- 0:07Edwin, how's it going today?
- 0:07Doing well,
- 0:09Claire.
- 0:10Always good to dig into these conversations.
- 0:12And today's?
- 0:14I think it's one a lot of people need to hear.
- 0:16Might ruffle a few feathers.
- 0:16Ha-yeah,
- 0:19no kidding.
- 0:19So, we're getting into why, like,
- 0:21old-school hiring just...
- 0:23doesn't really work anymore.
- 0:24And honestly?
- 0:25I feel like a ton of companies are still kinda stuck in the past.
- 0:25Like-I
- 0:30remember this job I applied for early in my career.
- 0:32I was so excited, right?
- 0:33Did all my homework, felt like I really nailed it.
- 0:33But I never even got
- 0:37a call back.
- 0:37And later I found out their system just,
- 0:41like, filtered me out...
- 0:43all because I didn't use the "right" keyword on my résumé.It was super
- 0:47discouraging.
- 0:48And it made me wonder-how many great people are getting totally overlooked?
- 0:48That's
- 0:53a textbook example, Claire.
- 0:55And it happens way more than people realize.
- 0:55This whole "filter by keywords,
- 1:00go with your gut" approach-it feels familiar,
- 1:03sure.
- 1:03But it's...
- 1:04broken.
- 1:04CVs and applications?
- 1:08They only tell you what someone's done-not how they'll actually perform
- 1:13or mesh with your team.
- 1:13And gut instinct?
- 1:16Honestly, that's usually just another name for bias.
- 1:16We've talked about
- 1:21this before-but a bad hire?
- 1:23It's not just the salary.
- 1:25It's lost time, frustrated teams,
- 1:27missed opportunities.
- 1:27In today's talent market?
- 1:31That's a price most companies just can't afford anymore.
- 1:31Right-and I think
- 1:35a lot of leaders still don't see those hidden costs.
- 1:37Like, it's not just about filling a chair.
- 1:37If you hire the wrong person?
- 1:41You're actually slowing your team down.
- 1:41And I mean-we've seen this in
- 1:46other episodes, especially when we talked about founders making that first
- 1:49hire.
- 1:49One person can completely shift the vibe...
- 1:53or the momentum.
- 1:53So, I've gotta ask-why are so many companies still clinging
- 1:59to this old way of doing things?
- 1:59Because change is uncomfortable.
- 2:03Even when the current system's broken,
- 2:05it's familiar.
- 2:05And sometimes leaders just...
- 2:08don't realize there's a better way.
- 2:08But the game's changed.
- 2:12Candidates have more options.
- 2:14The best ones?
- 2:16They're not waiting around for some clunky,
- 2:18impersonal process.
- 2:18If you're still relying on gut feel and résumé scans?
- 2:25You're not just missing out-you're falling behind.
- 2:25Yeah...
- 2:28and it's kinda wild, right?
- 2:28Like-we live in a world with so much data
- 2:33and tech.
- 2:33And yet...
- 2:34we're still letting "vibes" decide who we hire?
- 2:34Okay-but let's shift gears.
- 2:34If
- 2:41companies want to do better-and they can-what should they focus on?
- 2:41It's
- 2:46not all bad news, right?
- 2:46Not at all.
- 2:46Actually-one of the biggest levers
- 2:51companies have?
- 2:52It's their employer brand.
- 2:52And I don't just mean a slick careers page.
- 2:52I'm
- 2:57talking real stories.
- 2:58Real values.
- 2:59Real culture.
- 2:59I worked with this tech startup once-they were struggling,
- 3:04barely getting applicants.
- 3:04Then they started sharing behind-the-scenes
- 3:08stories from employees-like, day-in-the-life stuff.
- 3:08Within weeks?
- 3:13They had people reaching out who weren't even job hunting.
- 3:13They just...
- 3:17connected with the story.
- 3:17That's so cool.
- 3:17I think a lot of companies hear
- 3:22"brand" and immediately think...
- 3:24logo.
- 3:24Or maybe the product.
- 3:24But it's so much more than that.
- 3:28It's the whole vibe you give off.
- 3:28And I love that idea-sharing real employee
- 3:33stories?
- 3:33Way more authentic than just slapping "Great Place to Work!" on
- 3:37a billboard.
- 3:37Exactly.
- 3:37Candidates today are sharp-they can smell generic
- 3:42messaging a mile away.
- 3:42What really works is showing your values in action.
- 3:42If
- 3:49you're remote-first, talk about how you make flexibility work.
- 3:49If you promote
- 3:54from within, highlight that growth path.
- 3:54And don't sleep on social media-it's
- 4:00not just for marketing anymore.
- 4:00It's a magnet for talent.
- 4:00When you humanize
- 4:05your brand, you don't just attract applicants.
- 4:05You attract the right ones.
- 4:05Yeah-and
- 4:10I guess that's where referrals come in,
- 4:11too, right?
- 4:11Like, if your team loves working there,
- 4:14they're gonna talk about it.
- 4:14But if you're just another bland company?
- 4:18No one's gonna hype you up.
- 4:18So,
- 4:20for any leaders listening-what's one thing they can do,
- 4:23like, this week to build a better employer brand?
- 4:23Start simple.
- 4:23Post a
- 4:29real story from someone on your team-why they joined,
- 4:32what they love, or even something they struggled with.
- 4:32That kind of honesty?
- 4:37It draws people in.
- 4:37And if you're not sure what your brand is?
- 4:37Ask your
- 4:43employees.
- 4:43They'll tell you what makes your company special.
- 4:47That's your message.
- 4:47I love that.
- 4:47And,
- 4:50like, it's kinda freeing to realize-you don't need some massive budget.
- 4:50Actually...
- 4:55that reminds me of something I've been meaning to ask.
- 4:55Edwin,
- 4:58how can smaller companies actually pull this off...
- 5:01if they don't have a full HR department or,
- 5:03you know, tons of tools?
- 5:03That's a great question,
- 5:06Claire.
- 5:06You don't need a giant team to hire smart.
- 5:06It starts with intention.
- 5:06Even
- 5:13budget-friendly tools-like lightweight applicant tracking systems-can
- 5:17help keep things organized and reduce bias.
- 5:17And assessments?
- 5:21There are scalable ones out there.
- 5:21OAD's personality surveys,
- 5:26for example-super accessible.
- 5:26Even small companies can use them to go
- 5:31beyond just the résumé...
- 5:32and really understand who's going to thrive in the role.
- 5:32So,
- 5:36it's really about being thoughtful,
- 5:38right?
- 5:38Like-not just posting the job and hoping for the best.
- 5:38But sitting
- 5:43down and thinking: what does success in this role actually look like?
- 5:43And
- 5:47then using tools that help you match people to that.
- 5:47We've talked about
- 5:51how assessments can reveal things you'd never see on a résumé...But what
- 5:55about, like, culture-fit interviews?
- 5:56How do those work in real life?
- 5:56Culture-fit interviews are all about digging
- 6:00deeper.
- 6:00Instead of the usual "Where do you see yourself?" stuff...
- 6:04you ask questions that reveal values,
- 6:06adaptability, work style.
- 6:06Like-"Tell me about a time you had to adapt
- 6:12to big change at work.
- 6:13What did you do?"Or-"What kind of team setup brings out your best?"These
- 6:19give you a window into how someone's really going to show up.
- 6:19And when
- 6:24you pair that with assessment data?
- 6:24You're not just guessing.
- 6:27You're making smarter, fairer choices.
- 6:27That's so helpful.
- 6:27And honestly,
- 6:33I love that it's not about checking boxes-it's about building a team
- 6:36that, like...
- 6:37actually works.
- 6:37But here's my last question: once you've got all this
- 6:42set up, how do you make sure it keeps getting better?
- 6:42Like-how do you avoid
- 6:46falling back into old habits?
- 6:46Great question.
- 6:46Hiring should be a living
- 6:51process.
- 6:51Track what's working-look at time-to-fill,
- 6:55quality of hire, retention.
- 6:55Talk to your hiring managers.
- 6:59Get feedback from new team members.
- 6:59And adjust as you go.
- 6:59The best companies?
- 7:05They treat hiring as a learning loop.
- 7:05They know even small tweaks-done
- 7:10consistently-can lead to major improvements over time.
- 7:10That's so true.
- 7:10And
- 7:14it makes hiring feel less like a chore...
- 7:16and more like a way to shape your future.
- 7:16Which,
- 7:19honestly, is kinda exciting.
- 7:19Edwin-thank you,
- 7:23as always, for your wisdom.
- 7:23And thanks to you for listening to The Science
- 7:27of Leading.
- 7:27We'll be back soon with more on building better teams and smarter
- 7:31hiring.
- 7:31Edwin-always a pleasure.

- 7:35Claire.
