- 0:06Speaker 2: headquarters for iHeartRadio. Mike Crispino right now, Ben Darnell sitting
- 0:11Speaker 2: with us, our afternoon hostler with Rob Dibble.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Coach.
- 0:14Speaker 2: You'll be here in just a second. Dan Hurley coming
- 0:16Speaker 2: over from practice. They're at the Excel working out first
- 0:19Speaker 2: three games of their schedule. A benner at the Excel Center.
- 0:22Speaker 2: So you need to get as much practice time as
- 0:24Speaker 2: you can in a building.
- 0:25Speaker 1: You don't get into that all. I don't know. We
- 0:27Speaker 1: got a strict six o'clock.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Something may have happened at practice that we need to
- 0:32Speaker 3: get to the bottom too.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Maybe some extra running or something. Stra I don't know.
- 0:36Speaker 3: I'm just saying he's usually a scheduled individual.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Yeah, see what went on?
- 0:41Speaker 3: But yeah, home games starting November sixth, Sacred Heart in
- 0:45Speaker 3: Hawaii for a big contest coming up with you multiple
- 0:48Speaker 3: great Division one basketball teams and then the Big East.
- 0:51Speaker 3: I'm super excited about the Big East. Here, I'll let
- 0:55Speaker 3: this dude talk about it. He knows a lot more
- 0:57Speaker 3: than I do. All right, Ben, let me introduce it.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen, back to back national champion, head coach,
- 1:06Speaker 3: big round of applause for our special guests. Head coach,
- 1:08Speaker 3: you got men's basketball day here.
- 1:21Speaker 4: It's up.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Uh as usual, good timing right this story the show
- 1:26Speaker 2: started thirty seconds ago, early on time.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Right on time. Uh.
- 1:30Speaker 2: So you getting a chance to practice in the Excel
- 1:32Speaker 2: a little bit. That's something you don't get to do
- 1:35Speaker 2: that much during the course of a week. Radio we're
- 1:38Speaker 2: on right now. All right, we're trying to We're trying.
- 1:41Speaker 4: To get this is just for this for the for
- 1:44Speaker 4: the guests.
- 1:44Speaker 2: You know, well, we got a huge crowd here. That's
- 1:46Speaker 2: the biggest crowd we've had for these things. I mean,
- 1:48Speaker 2: Coach Moore comes in, you come in.
- 1:50Speaker 4: Yeah, that was appreciate.
- 1:51Speaker 5: This was like the third time we got in there,
- 1:53Speaker 5: and I'd like to I wish we'd get in there more,
- 1:57Speaker 5: but there's just challenges to getting in there that obviously
- 1:59Speaker 5: the a little bit and just the building availability. But
- 2:03Speaker 5: you know that's where uh yeah, but it's nice to
- 2:06Speaker 5: get in there a couple of times today. You know,
- 2:08Speaker 5: it wasn't the greatest of practices. So you're going to
- 2:10Speaker 5: see like super negativity from here. If you asked me
- 2:15Speaker 5: about certain players right now, we're going to get to that.
- 2:18Speaker 1: We're going to get to that. Uh.
- 2:20Speaker 4: One thing to do a list of who we talk
- 2:22Speaker 4: about first?
- 2:23Speaker 2: Oh really, you sent it to me, Paul Weman, you
- 2:27Speaker 2: send it to him, you'll give it to me. People
- 2:30Speaker 2: don't A lot of people don't know this because they
- 2:32Speaker 2: weren't at the Final four. But you in practice at
- 2:34Speaker 2: the Final four in Phoenix. I think you did it
- 2:36Speaker 2: to Houston too. You didn't have a typical like practice
- 2:39Speaker 2: warm up thing. You had guys diving on the floor.
- 2:42Speaker 2: And when I saw that, and a lot of people
- 2:44Speaker 2: said the same thing, Wow, what kind of guy is this?
- 2:47Speaker 1: What kind of coaches is.
- 2:48Speaker 2: These guys players diving on the floor before a Final four?
- 2:51Speaker 5: Yeah, it used to not be that in common with
- 2:53Speaker 5: coaches though almost all coaches had their teams playing hard,
- 2:57Speaker 5: like I wouldn't be such an outlier, Yukon wouldn't be
- 3:00Speaker 5: such an outlier.
- 3:03Speaker 4: I coached the way coaches used to coach.
- 3:04Speaker 5: That's why I think, you know, Coach Calhoun was one
- 3:08Speaker 5: of my idols as a coach. Coach Izzo at Michigan
- 3:11Speaker 5: State was another coach I liked a lot as to model,
- 3:15Speaker 5: you know myself after as a coach. So I mean
- 3:19Speaker 5: with this time of year, we're doing that for two
- 3:20Speaker 5: hours and twenty minutes, two hours and fifteen minutes by
- 3:24Speaker 5: the time we get down towards the end. By the
- 3:29Speaker 5: time we get down towards the end of the year,
- 3:30Speaker 5: maybe an hour in ten minutes. But we're going to
- 3:34Speaker 5: still practice with a lot of intensity, a lot of pace,
- 3:38Speaker 5: and we're gonna that environment. I think it helps our
- 3:41Speaker 5: players a lot. You've seen the viral videos. I mean
- 3:44Speaker 5: that's going on like every day, so it's intense. It's
- 3:48Speaker 5: not for every player, but you could see. I think
- 3:52Speaker 5: the formulas are working for us.
- 3:54Speaker 2: So the reason that you do that kind of thing
- 3:57Speaker 2: this this seems like it's a silly question, but you're
- 4:00Speaker 2: trying to accomplish something by getting after guys like that
- 4:05Speaker 2: in the year.
- 4:05Speaker 1: What is it you're looking for?
- 4:07Speaker 2: What are you trying to get out of these guys
- 4:09Speaker 2: to start the year before you play the game?
- 4:11Speaker 5: Well, what you try to do as a coach, I think,
- 4:13Speaker 5: or if you're a trainer for a fighter or coach
- 4:16Speaker 5: of a sports team, I think Kamani said.
- 4:18Speaker 4: A player recently.
- 4:19Speaker 5: A player said to him, where I was the practices
- 4:24Speaker 5: were easy, but the games are hard, you know, and
- 4:27Speaker 5: that's like, that's not what you want to do, you know,
- 4:31Speaker 5: you do not want to practice at a low level,
- 4:35Speaker 5: and I expect the performers to go out and do it.
- 4:37Speaker 5: So I think that kind of sums it up. The
- 4:40Speaker 5: approach that we take with the guys is just like,
- 4:43Speaker 5: you know, if we stress around practice and we're you know,
- 4:47Speaker 5: really kind of like very almost unfair with the expectations
- 4:52Speaker 5: that when they get to game night they're just going
- 4:54Speaker 5: to be able to perform and the pressure and the chaos.
- 4:57Speaker 5: That's where I think we've spent a lot of time
- 5:01Speaker 5: with personality test, not necessarily personality tests, but really trying
- 5:05Speaker 5: to I think what we what we saw as when
- 5:09Speaker 5: you coach at Yukon, you gotta have players that when
- 5:11Speaker 5: in the big moments, they're not gonna play small. And
- 5:14Speaker 5: uh so we we've learned, I think, to try to
- 5:17Speaker 5: find like kids with good pedigree, high level, high levels
- 5:21Speaker 5: of confidence, people that can handle the workload, and we're
- 5:25Speaker 5: gonna let us coach them hard, you know, and not
- 5:27Speaker 5: everybody wants that, but.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Yeah, well the great players do.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I told you practice was bad, Yes.
- 5:37Speaker 1: You do. Well, what happened. What's a bad practice to you?
- 5:41Speaker 5: Well, I mean this time of year, you know, it's
- 5:43Speaker 5: like you're a week away, so everyone's on edge this
- 5:46Speaker 5: time of year. This time last year, I thought we
- 5:48Speaker 5: were bad, you know, like sneak into the instantly tournament,
- 5:53Speaker 5: you know last year's team. Yeah right, yeah, But that's
- 6:00Speaker 5: how insecure you are when you're a coach of a team,
- 6:02Speaker 5: because you know you're with them every day, you know
- 6:05Speaker 5: them so well, and then you know what they're capable
- 6:07Speaker 5: of when they play their worst game too so or
- 6:10Speaker 5: when they're at their worst, so you know, like when
- 6:12Speaker 5: you're around that every day, it's just you always feel
- 6:15Speaker 5: a little insecure about your team all the way through
- 6:18Speaker 5: until really late in the year, like middle of March
- 6:23Speaker 5: or something like that, you're starting to say you're starting
- 6:25Speaker 5: to have conversations on whether you think you have a
- 6:27Speaker 5: good team or not, because most of the time you're
- 6:29Speaker 5: just picking your team apart. You know, defense rebounding, you know,
- 6:32Speaker 5: our secondary ballscreen coverage, you know, you know our zone
- 6:36Speaker 5: offenses suck. You know, like we're just you know, you're
- 6:39Speaker 5: picking your team apart until you get late in the year,
- 6:41Speaker 5: and then it's like you know, they have to kind
- 6:43Speaker 5: of earn your respect to a degree that by by
- 6:47Speaker 5: that point of the year, And for us last year
- 6:49Speaker 5: was that game of Providence when then when we beat
- 6:52Speaker 5: them like that in a game they had to win
- 6:55Speaker 5: to make the tournament, and we got down like seventeen,
- 6:58Speaker 5: not two or something crazy, and then we're up like
- 7:00Speaker 5: fourteen and a half, and you're like, WHOA, this team
- 7:04Speaker 5: is awesome.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Yeah, crazy, you turn around.
- 7:05Speaker 2: I think all the things that you do in practice
- 7:08Speaker 2: early pays off in postseason. Obviously, you've won twelve straight
- 7:12Speaker 2: games in the NCAA tournament. Do you feel like when
- 7:14Speaker 2: guys get in tournament pressure your teams these last two
- 7:17Speaker 2: years especially, they are kind of relaxed in a sense.
- 7:21Speaker 1: They know we're good, we.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Practiced hard, we got talent, and they seem to relax
- 7:28Speaker 2: under pressure, which is a huge thing.
- 7:30Speaker 1: I think.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah.
- 7:31Speaker 5: I mean, if you're top five in the country in offense,
- 7:34Speaker 5: top five in defense, top five in rebounding, number one
- 7:39Speaker 5: and assistant turnover ratio, you want of the highest assist
- 7:42Speaker 5: teams in the country. Yeah, we're number one in transition
- 7:45Speaker 5: offensive efficiency. I mean, we were just so well rounded
- 7:49Speaker 5: last year that you just are like you just felt
- 7:53Speaker 5: so good going into those games, Like even the Illinois game,
- 7:56Speaker 5: which you know we shot horble on that game, we
- 7:59Speaker 5: were bricking and like usually you go on a thirty
- 8:01Speaker 5: zero run in a game because you're hitting every three
- 8:05Speaker 5: or you're just you know, like we were bricking every three.
- 8:08Speaker 5: But that's how dominant our basketball was, like the defense,
- 8:11Speaker 5: the rebounding, the passing, execution, just the many different ways
- 8:15Speaker 5: we could beat you. So last year's team we did
- 8:19Speaker 5: not feel much pressure, well, you know once we got
- 8:22Speaker 5: to the tournament, because we just everything is so automatic
- 8:25Speaker 5: at that time of the year, your habits, your identity.
- 8:28Speaker 5: We were healthy, everyone's confidence was high. We weren't reliant
- 8:32Speaker 5: on one player.
- 8:33Speaker 4: I mean.
- 8:35Speaker 5: Two years ago the first round game versus Iona, it
- 8:37Speaker 5: was like that was nerve wracking. It was you know
- 8:41Speaker 5: in the first in the first half they played well, yeah,
- 8:44Speaker 5: it didn't feel sustainable. So I wasn't as bad as
- 8:46Speaker 5: it was the year before. When we were watching in
- 8:48Speaker 5: the New Mexico State game, we were looking at each other.
- 8:50Speaker 4: In the locker room, like where where you could be
- 8:52Speaker 4: We looked at it, you know, like the locker room
- 8:54Speaker 4: was just super quiet down ten and Buffalo. The first round.
- 9:04Speaker 5: Pressure is way different when you're at Yukon. I remember
- 9:07Speaker 5: coaching at Rhode Island, coaching the first game and has
- 9:09Speaker 5: somebody tournament at Rhode Island, You're like, I got house money,
- 9:13Speaker 5: like no one.
- 9:14Speaker 4: If I win a game, I'm a god.
- 9:16Speaker 5: And then you get the Yukon like you are on
- 9:19Speaker 5: the opposite end of that, and that's something that you
- 9:22Speaker 5: you're What I guess you have to do is have
- 9:24Speaker 5: your team is so good.
- 9:27Speaker 4: That it don't matter.
- 9:27Speaker 1: All right, Well, mission accomplice last year.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Right, Dan Hurley's with us the Yukon Basketball Coaches Show.
- 9:32Speaker 2: We continue from the studio break crowd on hand back
- 9:38Speaker 2: in a moment on Lear Field,
