Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Teachers deserve a pay rise
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I can't see what the problem is with teachers getting
- 0:02Speaker 1: a pay rise. Can you guess who does have a
- 0:05Speaker 1: problem with teachers getting a pay rise? A teachers union.
- 0:09Speaker 1: I know, how does that work. The union that's always
- 0:12Speaker 1: saying teachers are undervalued, they're underpaid, doesn't want to pay rise.
- 0:16Speaker 1: They're actually going to take legal action to try and
- 0:18Speaker 1: stop it from happening. It's upside down day today, folks.
- 0:22Speaker 1: It's back to front. This is the primary teacher union.
- 0:25Speaker 1: They've been dragging out collective bargaining nine months in counting now.
- 0:29Speaker 1: So in the meantime, Old Mates of Brian Roch is
- 0:32Speaker 1: offering non union teachers employed on individual agreements up to
- 0:36Speaker 1: an extra four point seven percent within twelve months. That's
- 0:39Speaker 1: two and a half percent from March, then two point
- 0:42Speaker 1: one percent next year. This is, according to the government,
- 0:45Speaker 1: an extra fifty to seventy six bucks a week in
- 0:49Speaker 1: your pocket for a teacher. A third of primary teachers
- 0:52Speaker 1: that's about ten thousand aren't part of the union. Now
- 0:56Speaker 1: the union doesn't like this because they say it's the
- 0:58Speaker 1: government trying to break their unity, but the reality is
- 1:03Speaker 1: they're not unified. A third of them don't pay subs
- 1:07Speaker 1: to the union so therefore can go down the individual
- 1:10Speaker 1: route with school boards. Last time I checked, they were adults.
- 1:14Speaker 1: It's the kids that they're teaching, remember, and the union members,
- 1:17Speaker 1: by the way, they can accept this off for two
- 1:19Speaker 1: but they choose not to. Well, the union chooses not to.
- 1:23Speaker 1: To your average KEI we a union trying to stop
- 1:25Speaker 1: non union teachers from getting a pay rise during a
- 1:27Speaker 1: cost of living crisis by bringing in their expensive lawyers
- 1:30Speaker 1: looks messy, controlling, and frankly a little unfair. Throw into
- 1:36Speaker 1: the mix you've got the other teacher unions demanding updates
- 1:39Speaker 1: on the war in Gaza and the fact that student
- 1:41Speaker 1: achievement was pretty much in the bin for many years,
- 1:45Speaker 1: and they start to look well beyond out of touch
- 1:48Speaker 1: with the rest of us, don't they. For more from
- 1:51Speaker 1: Early Edition with Ryan Bridge, listen live to news Talks
