Transcript
- 1:11Should you let your heart be your guiding key?
- 1:17Or should you just remember that the heart is deceitful above all else?
- 1:21Somehow Birth by Sleep Kingdom Hearts seems to be teaching us both as we continue discussing Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep.
- 1:27This is part two of that episode because we went longer than anticipated which why didn't we anticipate that?
- 1:31Great question.
- 1:32I should have.
- 1:32I'm Joshua Noel here with the one and only Christian Ashley.
- 1:36Ready to talk more about Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, which is what I'm geeking out on.
- 1:40I'm on my like 500th around playing all the Kingdom Hearts games.
- 1:44Finally finished Kingdom Hearts 3 manga because I finally were able to get it in English.
- 1:48I've read all the light novels.
- 1:49I'm a geek.
- 1:50I don't feel like I need to like do anything else to flex my geek cred.
- 1:53Christian, flex some cred for him.
- 1:55How geeky are you?
- 1:57I'm continuing on in my every horror film ever watched through and I'm in 1944 so not as removed for the last time.
- 2:03But I just watched the Return of the Ape man which was way better than I expected.
- 2:08Nice.
- 2:09I just love hearing the titles.
- 2:10Sometimes just the titles are like yeah, yeah, that's great.
- 2:13I.
- 2:13I miss when we could just be that.
- 2:15You know.
- 2:16Sometimes you still get it but it's usually like sci fi.
- 2:17Feeling like I want that stuff did the theater just the absolute.
- 2:20You're like yeah, Return of Ape Man.
- 2:23Let's do it.
- 2:24The Beagle strikes again.
- 2:25Again.
- 2:26Again.
- 2:26Woo.
- 2:27That's the title.
- 2:29As we want to thank one of our financial supporters today I'm going to shout out Jeannie Mattingly, one of my aunts.

- 3:14And we do this for community, for friendship.
- 3:16We don't just do this for.
- 3:17We definitely don't do this for money.
- 3:19We don't get money out of this.
- 3:20And we certainly don't do it for fame.
- 3:22So we're hoping you guys just join in the community, talk with us or we have some good conversations.
- 3:27That's really why we're doing this.
- 3:28So, you know, be like Donald and Goofy, befriend somebody by joining in the geeky goodness and talking to us.
- 3:35You want to be Christian's friend?
- 3:36Now is the time.
- 3:38Protect the world.
- 3:39Border with me.
- 3:39Now that we're going to jump back, no muddling, we're going to jump back into some Kingdom hearts nonsense, I guess you could say.
- 3:49So where we left off, we were talking about Birth by sleep.
- 3:52We were at the part of the story Terra and Master Eraqus had a conflict because Terra's been manipulated this whole time, slowly falling into darkness.
- 4:04And Luke Sky, I mean, Mark Hamill, I mean Master Eraqus.
- 4:08Yes.
- 4:09Confronts him, realizes the only way to defeat the darkness is to defeat his own pupil, Terra, who's also kind of being manipulated because he doesn't get the whole story from Xehanort, AKA the Emperor.
- 4:19It just fits too well.
- 4:20Guys, it's crazy.
- 4:21Aqua sees this kind of stuff going on.
- 4:24Ventus is in the mix, who's just there so that we can have some more story that involves Sora from here.
- 4:31Christian, you have that conflict where Master Eric is confronts Tara.
- 4:38Give a little bit more context to that for those who are just jumping in from now and tell me what happened in the story from there.
- 4:44How do we wrap up Birth by sleep?
- 4:46Yeah.
- 4:46So after Eric is is gone due to the actions of Tara and Xehanort manipulating him, we have our three friends, like, kind of on the outs with each other for the most part.
- 4:58And that leads us to Xehanort declaring his intentions to go to the Keyblade graveyard where the Keyblade warriors of the past once fought.
- 5:08And in a very stunning visual that see all these keyblades like key down in the ground from all the many lives that were lost here.
- 5:17And this is where, you know, Vanitas and Ventus fight each other.
- 5:22Aqua gets on the scene as Terra has been taken over by Xehanort to take his body and heart to get a younger body for himself because he's not going to be around that much.
- 5:32Longer, even though he is, but, you know, Kingdom Hearts nonsense.
- 5:36And this has led to the conflict of Aqua trying to save her friends.
- 5:40She's barely able to get Ventus away in the Land of Departure, stealing it away from everyone else who could possibly go there so that his heart isn't stolen for Xehanort to create the.
- 5:50The Keyblade.
- 5:51The Kai Blade.
- 5:51The Keyblade, however heck you want to say it depends on who's pronouncing it.
- 5:56So he can use this to open the doors of Kingdom Hearts.
- 5:58Is it the place?
- 5:59Is it the concept?
- 6:00Is it whatever we say it is?
- 6:02Yes.
- 6:04And that is where Aqua confronts Xehanort.
- 6:07And Terror's body one more time, unfortunately is thrown into darkness as a result of that living in the realm of darkness for the next 10 years.
- 6:14So this is what is known as a downer ending, which, if you know me, is typically not the thing I love.
- 6:20Because they typically are meant to make you feel bad.
- 6:23But this one is no.
- 6:24To explain the events of what came before.
- 6:27We can't have them around.
- 6:28So how's that possible?
- 6:29Well, they did what they could and failed.
- 6:30So, you know, there's still hope in the future.
- 6:32And this being influenced by Star Wars.
- 6:34Good.
- 6:35Star wars inspires hope in its audience.
- 6:37Yeah.
- 6:38Also, it does remind me a lot of Rogue One.
- 6:41You're like, you kind of know.
- 6:42Yeah, they're not going to be successful at the end.
- 6:45But it's so good.
- 6:47Yeah, I think too.
- 6:48So important, important lore stuff.
- 6:51Right.
- 6:51Ventus ends up in Sora's heart because why wouldn't he?
- 6:56Because they connected.
- 6:57I just don't even think we need to explain that everyone ends up in Sora's heart for some reason.
- 7:01Yeah.
- 7:02Tara getting morphed with the Xehanort ends up being really important because after Aqua defeats him, you still have this morphed.
- 7:08What I think where you usually the fans just call the Terraza Nort, who forgets all of his past so he doesn't remember anything.
- 7:18And that's when he ends up in Radiant Garden, which for those who care about such things, that's where Kyrie is born.
- 7:24Yes.
- 7:26And Enze Nort.
- 7:27And Terra Xehanort in Radiant Gardens gets taken in by Anthem the Wise.
- 7:34And that's where you see Zehan orden.
- 7:35Kingdom Hearts 2, who is his like pupil.
- 7:37I think they're just trying to explain away personally.
- 7:39But that's why he's not a Keyblade wielder at that point.
- 7:41He's just forgot who he was and kind of learns as he's doing these experiments with Ansem the Wise, who.
- 7:47Anson the Wise had another pupil who I think was Braig, who ends up becoming Zigbar the Nobody was more of.
- 7:54A bounty hunter, mercenary kind of guy.
- 7:59As well.
- 7:59And he didn't.
- 8:00He never liked Xehanort.
- 8:02It's complicated.
- 8:02Yeah.
- 8:03Yeah.
- 8:04But also another fun part, if you remember.
- 8:07I can't remember the guy's name now, man.
- 8:10Who was it who has the.
- 8:11The keyblade with the eye?
- 8:13Masters.
- 8:14Are you talking Luxu?
- 8:15No, the guy he gave it Luxu.
- 8:18Luxu is actually inhibiting.
- 8:20Is actually taking over Briggs body.
- 8:24Which means he's also ends up kind of being in Zip Bar.
- 8:26And that's a whole nother sideline.
- 8:28But if you remember that part of the story when we talked about the mobile games.
- 8:31At this point in the story, Lucia Luxu is taking over Braig's body.
- 8:36So when you go to Ansem the Wise, you have Ansem the Wise, Braig Luxu, and also now this Terror Xehanort.
- 8:46They're in Radiant Gardens.
- 8:47We'll get to that story later.
- 8:49But that's kind of how the story ends.
- 8:50With Terra over there.
- 8:53His heart still partially lost.
- 8:56I think she kind of saved.
- 8:57Doesn't she save Terra's heart in Riku though?
- 9:00So that mostly only affects ants.
- 9:02It only affects Xehanort.
- 9:03What happened with Terra's body?
- 9:05I think Terra's heart ends up in Riku.
- 9:07Maybe.
- 9:07I think it ends up in Riku's body.
- 9:10I think it's.
- 9:10For some reason.
- 9:11I thought she hid.
- 9:12I thought she hid his heart somehow.
- 9:13Once again, it's been a while since I've replayed that.
- 9:16I don't remember.
- 9:17Something funky happens.
- 9:18I know.
- 9:19Ventus ends up in Sora.
- 9:21What part of Ventus ended up in Sora?
- 9:23His body remains in a limited departure.
- 9:26Yeah.
- 9:27Because it would be.
- 9:28Yeah, because she fights him.
- 9:29And as a result of that it messes with the fusion of Xehanort and Terra to the extent where there's a possibility he can come back.
- 9:36That's also where the Guardian we get from Not Ansem and one eventually is revealed as kind of part of Terra.
- 9:45And that's where some of him kind.
- 9:46Of remains, I think.
- 9:47Oh, that's right.
- 9:48That Heartless is his thing.
- 9:50And then Lingering Will is created from Tara's mind.
- 9:54Yeah.
- 9:55Is Will left in the armor to try and get back his body?
- 9:58Okay.
- 9:59But he ends up getting restored in Kingdom Heart.
- 10:01All of them end up restored in Kingdom Hearts 3.
- 10:03So this is not Only important because it leads into Kingdom Hearts one.
- 10:05But we actually.
- 10:07These characters don't just die, which is crazy, but, you know, is what it is.
- 10:12I really think that most of that is just because the characters were all so loved, because the character work in this game was just so well done that I think they just kind of realized they couldn't let the
- 10:21character stay dead because the fans liked him too much.
- 10:24Fair.
- 10:24And as much as Nomura likes to make fun of us and give us things that we hate, we're like, why are you putting so much story in mobile games?
- 10:31So then he puts more story in mobile games, and we're like, no, we're tired of 2.5 and 2.8.
- 10:35You know what?
- 10:35Kingdom Hearts 3, I'm going to start it with 2.9.
- 10:39That's what he does.
- 10:40But sometimes he also was like, the fans like this too much.
- 10:42I'll find a reason to come back to life.
- 10:44It's fine.
- 10:45Yeah, Only Star wars can learn that with Mace Windu.
- 10:48We'd be so much better off.
- 10:51All right, so I think that gets us through most of the story.
- 10:54Aqua left in the Land of Darkness.
- 10:56Ventus heart is partially in Sora.
- 10:59Terra's heart is suppressed inside of the Terra Xehanort body that's now at Radiant Gardens with no memories and learning air quotes under Anthem the Wise.
- 11:11So, all that said, how would you rate and review if you were going to give this a rating?
- 11:150 to 10 for Kingdom Hearts?
- 11:16Birth by sleep.
- 11:17Where are you putting it?
- 11:18This is a 10, baby.
- 11:20Like, I absolutely adore this game.
- 11:23It's got a fun enough crafting system, which I normally don't care about, but, you know, you give me the ability to use new spells, I will look up the guide.
- 11:30I will get the work done.
- 11:31Oh, the XP Walker.
- 11:33I have to go to this place and kill the specific thing a couple of times.
- 11:36That means that every time I take a step, I get xp.
- 11:38Okay.
- 11:39I'm in.
- 11:39The Disney worlds are used magnificently well here.
- 11:42They, for the most part, like, really align with what they're trying to say for these characters and what they're learning along the way.
- 11:49You know, you have Stitch as this monster at the very beginning, but is there more to them?
- 11:53You know, Aqua and Venus got to see more to him, and Tara kind of sees a little bit, but he's not willing to go there yet.
- 11:59Get the Cinderella stuff.
- 12:00You get the Sleeping Beauty stuff.
- 12:02And of course, Maleficent starting her journey like she's already dark, but her journey into darkness and like, what that could mean for her outside of her own world is introduced to, which will lead her to make the alliance
- 12:13we see in Kingdom Hearts one.
- 12:14And she'll be there for quite some time, as she deserves, as one of the best villains Disney has ever made.
- 12:20Our Core 3 here, love them very well.
- 12:23They work in different ways.
- 12:25Like I said, still an Aqua guy.
- 12:26But I love.
- 12:27Excuse me, Tara, and I love Ventus for different reasons.
- 12:30And we get our original cast From Kingdom Hearts 1 as children in a way that isn't just there for the sake of fan service.
- 12:37Like, it applies.
- 12:38Like, okay, why do they have connection to them?
- 12:39Why do they feel this way?
- 12:41That leads into other stories told here.
- 12:43Like, this is a phenomenal game and my favorite for a reason.
- 14:15Yeah.
- 12:47Yeah.
- 14:16All right.
- 14:18This is a little bit difficult for me.
- 14:21I'm going to do this a couple different ways because if you guys know, when I rate, I think of it as comparison more than I think of it as, like, a grade, you know?
- 14:27Like, I'm not gonna give it, like, 0 to 100 if I'm, like, rating just like, video games 10 out of 10.
- 14:32If I'm reading specifically Kingdom Hearts video games, 9 out of 10.
- 14:36There's only one 10 out of 10 for me.
- 14:38If I'm rating PSP games 20 out of 10.
- 14:42How on earth was this a PSP game?
- 14:44Like, what?
- 14:44What?
- 14:45Or was this PSP or Nintendo DS?
- 14:47I thought this was the PSP one.
- 14:49I'm not 100% sure.
- 14:50I've only played it on either way.
- 14:51PlayStation mobile game for the time era that it was in, this was a mobile game.
- 14:55And to me, it's done just as well as any of the platformer ones that I'm like.
- 14:59Like, you know, like Xbox, PlayStation.
- 15:01Like, it feels.
- 15:02It doesn't feel like it started off as a game that was on a portable device.
- 15:06You know, Like, I'm like, huh?
- 15:07What do you mean?
- 15:08This feels like it was meant to be a real entry, you know, like it meant.
- 15:13If they renumbered it like you do Star wars and this was Kingdom Hearts one.
- 15:16I don't think I'd complain that much.
- 15:18Like, it's done that well.
- 15:20Like, the cut scenes, everything.
- 15:21I'm like, wow.
- 15:22Like, it's.
- 15:23It's actually pretty.
- 15:23It's incredible.
- 15:24The story.
- 15:25Story is really great.
- 15:26You get so much lore here.
- 15:28Characters are all fantastic.
- 15:30This is like the first game I think you get where Sora is not the main character.
- 15:34And I'm like, I'm.
- 15:34I didn't miss him.
- 15:35I love Sora.
- 15:36But I didn't miss him, you know.
- 15:38Yeah.
- 15:39So I just.
- 15:40It was just not so well.
- 15:40And even the worlds were like you said, chosen really well.
- 15:43It fit with the theme.
- 15:45The only concern I have with the world really has to do with Kingdom Hearts 4 and not this.
- 15:49It's like this is the one exception where like usually you can go by by eras.
- 15:54Like the mobile games were set in the Fairy Tale era, so you have all the older Disney movies there.
- 16:00By the time you get to Kingdom Hearts, it's like all the Millennial Kingdom, you know, Disney movies.
- 16:04And then Kingdom Hearts 3, it's like newer movies.
- 16:06And like I feel like that could explain why they keep choosing newer movies for the new games.
- 16:11And we can go back to other eras, which I think the anime is going to be set in the Fairy Tale era, but this one, you have some from all kinds of different eras of Disney animation mixed in
- 16:19because it's what fit the story best, which I like.
- 16:21I'm just not sure how it's going to work with how they format the series going forward.
- 16:25They might just say, yeah, just accept it.
- 16:28Which I'm fine with because again, incredible game.
- 16:30So in all I'm just going to say 10 out of 10 because like, man, it just feels wrong not to so good.
- 16:37Right.
- 16:37And it has Aqua who truly just like if I'm just making a list of my favorite characters of all time, she probably makes it.
- 16:44She's a good character.
- 16:47I do want to touch on too.
- 16:48Christian, kind of hear from you.
- 16:50You talk some about how like we see the younger Sora, Riku Kairi, our main three from the main series.
- 16:58We saw a little bit of what happens with Xehanort.
- 17:00There's a lot of pieces here.
- 17:03Our annual theme on Cismatic Ecology this year are the Faces behind us.
- 17:06We're doing a whole episode on Aqua with the Faces behind us at the end of the year.
- 17:10But just as a whole, if you were thinking of this game and what does it speak to that we are trying to get at with the series faces behind us.
- 17:17I feel like it says a lot, but I'm just going to want to hear from you a little bit.
- 17:21Yeah, I mean our trio here is set up to be foils to a sense to our main trio, Sora Kairi and Riku in regular games in that Terra is very obviously Riku, struggling with darkness, a little more aggressive.
- 17:35And that always stinks to do's.
- 17:37Right.
- 17:37So if I'm doing it, it must be the right thing.
- 17:39Ventus is very much our sora not just in looks, but in the fact that, you know, he's very carefree, but he also wants people to get along.
- 17:48He wants stuff to get done, hang out with their friends, have a good time.
- 17:50Now, Aqua and Kyrie are the harder ones to do, and that's because Kyrie doesn't get that much screen time.
- 17:54And it's not her fault in the fact that, you know, they both really love their friends.
- 17:58They want to take care of them, and they do things behind the scenes to get closer to them and make sure things are done well.
- 18:03I see.
- 18:04I see.
- 18:04That looks really great.
- 18:07Audio listeners.
- 18:07Sorry.
- 18:08You can see what I saw him hold up.
- 18:10But the strong will.
- 18:12The back of my phone has a Kyrie and Aqua sticker, but they both.
- 18:16Have the strong will to go after and look after their friends in ways that connect them, you know, at least thematically.
- 18:22But then we actually get to see them, meet them on the Destiny Islands.
- 18:25And obviously, you know, there's still the whole nonsense, we can't talk about other worlds and that, but you can tell that the kids kind of get a feeling for it.
- 18:34And they meet Kyrie and Radiant Garden, sorry, there's more to where we are.
- 18:39What can we do?
- 18:40And they perform rituals on them.
- 18:42That kind of.
- 18:42Okay, I feel a kinship towards you.
- 18:44For some reason, there's a connection between our hearts.
- 18:46And part of that is, well, maybe one day you can become a Keyblade Master.
- 18:50Which leads some credence to some ideas of maybe that's what happened to them back in the day.
- 18:54Because once we don't really focus on their backstories outside of Ventus for the most part here.
- 18:59So that could be something that happened to them as kids.
- 19:01Who knows?
- 19:03Only Nomura and tomorrow ain't telling right now, but it sets up for.
- 19:06Why would Sora and Riku know about other worlds outside of the fact that Kyrie comes from another world, which is part of this process through the experiments that were done on her with Xehanort and the nonsense he does
- 19:18with Ansem.
- 19:20So they know about that.
- 19:21But this also helps trigger that part of, okay, there's more out there.
- 19:23What if there's more than what we see around us?
- 19:25So let's go and search it out.
- 19:26So I love what's done with that.
- 19:28Then on the villainous side of things, I bring up, we don't really see Ansem in this game, but, like, his effects are felt in the fact that he's looking after these kids.
- 19:37Like we see, you know, Axel, pre Axel, as Lee and Issa, and all that as, like, apprentices of his.
- 19:45That leads up to Xehanort becoming one of those same apprentices until eventually he usurps the title of Anselm the Wise or Ansem for himself.
- 19:53That wouldn't have happened without his influence.
- 19:55That, of course, leads him to then target these children who used to be apprentices to become his apprentices in organization 13 and all that nonsense.
- 20:02Yeah, yeah.
- 20:03I mean, it does work on several level layers if we're talking about the faces behind us.
- 20:08Because, like, thematically, these three resembling Sora, Riku, Kairi, the whole message of friendship being what's powerful.
- 20:15But also, hey, friendship isn't perfect.
- 20:17It's not a, you know, it's worth one size cure all.
- 20:20Because sometimes it can be used to manipulate you.
- 20:23Like, thematically, it works really well to set up everything.
- 20:25Also, Lore wise, you know, Aqua is the reason why people are locked away.
- 20:30Terra is the reason that Xehanort ends up with Ansem the Wise.
- 20:33Like, you have so much like lore that just like one to one fits.
- 20:36Like Ventus literally ending up partially in Sora's heart.
- 20:41You're like, yeah, that's literally the face behind it.
- 20:44Like, he's literally in the guy, you know, I think two.
- 20:48One of the ones that's really interesting to explore since we split this into.
- 20:52We have a little bit of time to do this.
- 20:54Terra being taken over by Xehanort so that his heart is hidden.
- 20:59Xehanort has his body and it kind of morphs him into like, you know, so that we have the character we see later on, basically.
- 21:04But it's interesting because when Xehanort morphs with Terra, that's who splits into the Ansem Heartless that we fight in the first game as well as Ximnas, the Nobody that we fight in the second Kingdom Hearts.
- 21:18Because when you follow Riku's storyline from the original game, Riku, one of our main antagonist, protagonist, whatever, Agonist, it's complicated.
- 21:29He wants to use darkness for good.
- 21:30He's not scared of the darkness, whatever.
- 21:32He ends up being controlled by the Ansem Heartless, which is the Heartless of this character we just spoke of.
- 21:39And so much.
- 21:40Riku gets pulled into the darkness that he ends up taking on the physical form of Ansem, AKA Xehanort.
- 21:47And you see such a strong connection between Riku and Terra in that way.
- 21:53And I actually really feel like it gives credence to a lot of the story and themes we see later on where, like, Terra, he wasn't given a good master.
- 22:01I love eraqus, but like, he was kind of failed in that way.
- 22:03Then he was manipulated and he fell into the darkness and was consumed by it.
- 22:08Whereas Riku, because Mickey.
- 22:11I know.
- 22:11It's just so weird.
- 22:12King Mickey ends up being willing to to go there with him.
- 22:15It's like, hey, listen, I'm gonna walk the walk with you, man.
- 22:18You're going into darkness.
- 22:19Cool.
- 22:19I'm going with you.
- 22:20I think the reason that Riku doesn't end up with the same fate as Terra is because King Mickey was there so much for him.
- 22:26He had a friend, and Sora's always chasing after him that he held onto enough of himself that he was able to use that darkness for good and ends up usurping Sora.
- 22:34Eventually, Riku's ends up being the first one to pass the mark of mastery.
- 22:38And I think it's because of this, because he could have chosen fell the exact same route as Terra.
- 22:45But because of King Mickey and because of Sora's friendship, he didn't.
- 22:48So I think when you look at the face behind you, to me one of the really strong ones here, obviously Aqua, we're gonna do a whole episode on that Terra and Riku.
- 22:55It's just so strong.
- 22:56And it really makes the story stand out so much better chronologically when you get to Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 and you're like, wow, Riku's journey could have gone so much worse.
- 23:07And that's what a good friend does.
- 23:09And that's part of the faces behind Eric is.
- 23:12Is a teacher who is good at his job, but he's not perfect at his job.
- 23:15Like he's good at instructing them.
- 23:17Hey, this is why we exist as Keyblade wielders.
- 23:19We're supposed to keep the worlds apart.
- 23:20We can't let darkness invade people's hearts because it causes harm.
- 23:24So let's do that.
- 23:25But then he becomes the zealot rather than the rational teacher at certain parts.
- 23:30It's like, well, if you at all.
- 23:32From what I've been told by my good friend Pal Zaynor, who's never done anything wrong in his life, you're consumed by darkness.
- 23:38And so now it's my job.
- 23:39Because I'm a zeal it to kill you, Tara, rather than actually let you explain yourself.
- 23:44What's going on?
- 23:45Let me help you out with this.
- 23:46I can actually teach you after the things you've gone through, because I don't have to.
- 23:51I've sent you out in the world.
- 23:52He's what's the word.
- 23:54Kind of a sink or swim mentor in that regard.
- 23:55Like, I taught you everything I know.
- 23:57Or I go, oh, oh, are you in darkness?
- 24:00Oh, you're dead now.
- 24:01Like, you're not like my perfect student Aqua.
- 24:02It's not like she's never struggled with darkness or anything.
- 24:05He's never seen that in her.
- 24:07Obviously she has.
- 24:08But there's no empathy towards Tara because of the teachers that Eric has had.
- 24:13Rather than, okay, let's actually think about this, because we're not talking about darkness in this series.
- 24:19Is not how we typically think of evil.
- 24:22Like, evil by, in and of itself has never found a good way to be used because by its very nature, it's evil.
- 24:27Darkness, on the other hand, is something that exists in the world.
- 24:30It is a creation of part of creation.
- 24:33So you can use it for good or for ill.
- 24:35Just like they argue that light can be done, because when you become a zealot in that regard, you can cause harm.
- 24:41So teachers have been molding teacher students into becoming their teachers by all the way through time to where this is where we've ended up.
- 24:48So terror is kind of like the perfect encapsulation of someone who has been mentored by people poorly.
- 24:54And thus he ended up becoming them in a different way, but still very similar to them.
- 24:58To where when someone like Xano comes around, he hasn't been taught, hey, don't trust everything everyone tells you.
- 25:03So that no wonder he ends up the way he does.
- 25:06Yeah.
- 25:06What's.
- 25:07What's annoying is that, like.
- 25:08And I think good world building does this.
- 25:10Where you can see layers.
- 25:11There's not just one face behind you, There's a face behind that face and a face behind, you know, like, so on and so on.
- 25:15And it goes both ways.
- 25:16That's.
- 25:17Kingdom Hearts is great at world building, even though the lore gets way too convoluted.
- 25:21But is what it is, world building is really good.
- 25:24Um, I think the thing that annoys me.
- 25:27Xehanort does actually kind of have a point.
- 25:29The whole we are in darkness and then suddenly born into light.
- 25:32And he's talking, you know, he's talking about, like, the wound.
- 25:34Like, literally, but, like, a little bit of it you kind of see is true.
- 25:38And you see in this, like.
- 25:39And again, that goes back to why I'm like, the unversed kind of bother me.
- 25:41Because I'm like, anger isn't always bad, you know, like, sadness isn't always bad.
- 25:45So making strong, bad, negative emotions, the bad guys.
- 25:48I was like, I don't love that.
- 25:50But I think it still kind of gets at the point of like why terror turns so easily.
- 25:54It's bad teaching.
- 25:55It's because a little bit was right.
- 25:57You just over committed to one truth.
- 25:59Like sometimes you hang on to like one tiny thing that might be true but over applied becomes evil.
- 26:05Which you know, you could do in the Bible too.
- 26:07There are parts of the Bible that justify violence for certain circumstances.
- 26:09And it's easy for people to take little parts of the Bible that might be true and to over apply it and then it becomes not what was intended at all.
- 26:19And I think that's kind of what happens with Xehanort of Eventera here.
- 26:22It helps when you actually define terms and those terms actually mean something.
- 26:26You say not all anger is wrong.
- 26:28Yeah, I agree.
- 26:29But that's not the anger they're talking about.
- 26:31We're not talking about righteous anger here.
- 26:33We're not talking about Jesus seeing the temple being destroyed through people being greedy and causing harm to the people who are trying to legitimately reach God and can't because they're being sworn by people who hate them and then
- 26:45taking a whip out and turning tables and like, that's righteous anger.
- 26:49This isn't, you know, I've been wronged or I feel angry at this person, they got that promotion I didn't or they have what I don't have and I'm gonna be angry at them.
- 26:56That that's the actual unversed negative emotions they're talking to here.
- 26:59That's simplistic because it's a children's game, but that's not what they're talking about.
- 27:03It's like good applications of yeah, yeah, it's fine to be sad.
- 27:06That's why I really hope there's going to be an inside out world coming up soon because they could explore that extremely well.
- 27:13That'd be very useful to teach children.
- 27:15I'm torn on that, but yeah, I'm torn on it.
- 27:17But it could be good.
- 27:18There's just so many worlds I want to see that I'm like, I don't know, man, that might kick out a world.
- 27:24I want to see more.
- 27:26Oh no, but no, no, that, I mean, thematically inside out would really work, but yeah, I mean, I don't know.
- 27:32I don't know.
- 27:32I'm of two minds because I, I do think, Tara, when he gets some of the stuff he gets angry at, I'm like, legit reasons.
- 27:38And then all of a sudden he has powers of darkness.
- 27:40And you're like, why is that dark?
- 27:41That's a Good reason to be angry.
- 27:43But you know, again, in this game, darkness isn't always evil.
- 27:45So nuance.
- 27:47And I think too part of like, another reason I like Kingdom Hearts, I think real world, the same way some stuff is convoluted.
- 27:55The world is a little bit like, wait a minute.
- 27:57Lying drawn.
- 27:58But Rahab lied.
- 27:59And you liked that.
- 28:00God, yeah.
- 28:01What's going on here?
- 28:02And sometimes it's hard to understand that's.
- 28:05Life because it led to the depressuration.
- 29:04I think that this game is unnecessarily hard to understand.
- 29:07But, you know.
- 29:08All right, so what part of this game do you hope we see again?
- 29:11Like, what parts are you like, oh, let's.
- 29:13Let's bring those back for Kingdom Hearts 4.
- 29:14And what parts are you like?
- 29:16It was good for that, but let's leave it alone.
- 29:18If.
- 29:19If it is true that 4 is going to be like narrower worlds because multiple characters will be on them at multiple parts and different times in the story, I think that could be done extremely well because we'll have
- 29:31Donald and Goofy looking for Sora.
- 29:33We have Riku doing things on his own.
- 29:35Maybe Kairi and Aqua doing things together now that she's apprenticed under her.
- 29:40That could be a lot of fun.
- 29:41Like, maybe just use Inside out as a reference.
- 29:43Maybe Kyrie could be with Riley in the real world, but Sora would be inside her head.
- 29:47And he knows, oh, wait, that's Kairi.
- 29:49But I can't reach her because I'm inside the mind.
- 29:51But maybe our hearts connect, but, like, something's going on there.
- 29:53But Riku is maybe dealing with the negative aspects of what's going on in Riley's mind or something like that.
- 29:58Like, I think that'd be a ton of fun if we chose to do that.
- 30:02To tell these different stories in the same movie, but from different perspectives.
- 30:08Yeah, I definitely like the idea of seeing some of the same world from different perspectives.
- 30:11Maybe getting Sora, Riku.
- 30:13I want Donald and Goofy to end up with Sora asap.
- 30:15Like, I don't want a ton of separate with them just because I love the trio Man King Mickey.
- 30:21I want to.
- 30:22I want to see some world from his perspective now that we're just leaning into it.
- 30:25And I love how far we've come.
- 30:26We've went from you're allowed a single scene where we can see Mickey and that's it.
- 30:30To Mickey's a playable character.
- 30:32Yeah, I love that.
- 30:34Love that for us.
- 30:35But I actually think it helps a lot.
- 30:37It builds up the anticipation.
- 30:38It allows you to see how Important Mickey really is.
- 30:40I think they did that really well, actually.
- 30:42Even though it was just because of rights, it's fine.
- 30:45I don't want to see how the gameplay was in this again.
- 30:49I liked it, but I think it was fine for what it was.
- 30:52Going forward, I want that more dynamic.
- 30:53I actually loved how Kingdom Hearts 3 played, even though I thought parts of it was too easy.
- 30:57Like, I have lots of qualms, but like the way it felt, really dynamic, a lot faster paced.
- 31:01I enjoy that.
- 31:02I would be fine see more of that From Kingdom Hearts 3 and less of this kind of fighting style.
- 31:06Personally, one thing I would like to see, I don't think we're gonna see again, but I would love.
- 31:10I love the D link stuff.
- 31:12So in this game, because friendship is what connects us all.
- 31:15You can link to someone and all of a sudden you have their fighting skills.
- 31:19Like, I loved that.
- 31:20To me, the best way to play is when you're Ventus and you're using your link with Aqua.
- 31:25Because it's like, I'm still strong, but now I also have a lot more magic all of a sudden.
- 31:29It's great.
- 31:29It's a lot of fun.
- 31:31Sora D linking with Donald, I think would be awesome.
- 31:34I think that would be so much fun.
- 31:36Especially if I get that a flare.
- 31:37Max that out.
- 31:39They would never let me do that, but it would be great.
- 31:41Dealing is always one.
- 31:43That's where I'm at.
- 31:43That's the stuff I would like to see back.
- 31:44I always, after it's brought up, I never remember it exists until I start the next character's journey and go, oh, yeah, I'll do it this time.
- 31:51And then I forget it exists.
- 31:54I only remember because I'm so much better when I'm able to be a magic user.
- 31:59So I don't use it that much when I'm Aqua, actually, but I use it a lot when I'm the other two fair.
- 32:04It's like I need to be a magic user.
- 32:06So here's how I'm going to do this.
- 32:09Oh, man.
- 32:10So we mentioned we see each of them struggle in different ways.
- 32:15Rounding this out, Christian, these are three very different characters.
- 32:18Where do you most resonate, like, as far as, like, their struggles?
- 32:22Which ones are you?
- 32:23Like, you know, I feel that, like, personally, were there any that you were like, yeah, if I was to be manipulated by Xehanort, it would probably be more like them specifically.
- 32:32I mean, there's aspects of Terra in me and the desire I'm going to do.
- 32:37Right.
- 32:37But I don't Always.
- 32:39When I was younger, I didn't always check my sources, and I needed to be better about that.
- 32:43Something I learned over time.
- 32:45It's like, okay, just because you like this person doesn't automatically mean they're always going to be speaking in your best interest in what they're telling you to do.
- 32:52Okay, Now, I'm a little more aqua ish in that I have learned from my mistakes.
- 32:58I've learned how not to do things.
- 32:59But at that same time, I get angry when I can't solve problems in front of me because there's that desire to bring kinship together to.
- 33:07To help other people out, to restore relationships.
- 33:10And yet XYZ thing happens and I'm not strong enough to stop it.
- 33:15And then that frustration goes on and lingers in me and causes harm to other people because then I lash out at them to something that's not their fault for something that's not my fault, and then I make it
- 33:24my fault.
- 33:25Yeah, yeah, I.
- 33:26I do get a little bit of the vintus because I'm like, cheering on my friends and I'm like, you guys are all fit to be pastors or keyblade wielders or masters or whatever.
- 33:34And I'm like, you know, I'm here.
- 33:35I'm fine to help, but I always am kind of.
- 33:39What's it.
- 33:40What's that called?
- 33:40There's a term for that now where I'm like, ah, I feel imposter syndrome.
- 33:44I feel so.
- 33:45I feel like that's where I relate with ventus the most.
- 33:48Tara.
- 33:49Yeah, I'm with you.
- 33:49Like, usually I am very slow to anger.
- 33:53Not a brag.
- 33:54I just am.
- 33:54I'm non confrontational.
- 33:56But there are situations he finds himself in.
- 33:58Like, if I were to just show up and it looks like some poor old lady's being attacked, probably am gonna be like, all right, fighting whoever's attacking the poor old lady and not think maybe the poor old lady
- 34:07is the bad guy, you know?
- 34:08Yeah, yeah.
- 34:09Like, if I'm just throwing into that situation, I get it.
- 34:13Aqua.
- 34:14Aqua is the one I most relate to, which is weird.
- 34:16Usually my favorite characters I don't relate to that much.
- 34:18But coming in at the end and being like, well, how did they not see that this is wrong.
- 34:23This makes no sense.
- 34:24Why are you guys doing this stuff?
- 34:26Why don't you see the picture?
- 34:27Like, she seems to be frustrated that they aren't getting the whole picture.
- 34:31And I think that's her biggest downfall.
- 34:33She doesn't see her friend's perspective.
- 34:36She just sees what she sees and she's like, well, you guys should have known this was wrong.
- 34:40And I feel that way a lot.
- 34:41I think that's my biggest thing is I am like, sometimes it's hard to stop and think, wait a minute, they're seeing this differently than I saw this.
- 34:47What did they see?
- 34:48Why did they do this?
- 34:49It's hard to stop and think about all that.
- 34:51It's easier to get frustrated that, oh, I can't believe you didn't see all this.
- 34:54So that's where I, like, I do feel like I actually do relate to Aqua the most in this one.
- 34:57And, yeah, I don't know how to conquer that.
- 34:59Christian.
- 34:59How do we conquer it?
- 35:00Do we just watch and pray?
- 35:01Is that the answer?
- 35:01I mean, yes, we definitely did pray for God to make us a little better.
- 35:04We need to have people who hold us accountable and say, hey, I noticed you were doing this because you told me to look out for it.
- 35:11If they don't know that we need.
- 35:13I'll talk to Mark Hamill more.
- 35:15I mean, if Mark Hamill wants to talk to me, I'm open to that.
- 35:18We're not exactly what I call political buddies, but, you know, as an actor, he's still my guy.
- 35:23Mm.
- 35:24I think I might be a political.
- 35:25But I usually.
- 35:26You know what it is?
- 35:27I like the people he makes fun of.
- 35:29I'm like, I agree.
- 35:30They should be made fun of.
- 35:31Well, that's not my issue.
- 35:32I think I ignore the rest of it.
- 35:34Yeah.
- 35:34Yeah.
- 35:34I mean, yeah, I figured.
- 35:37Yeah.
- 35:37I mean, truly, I think I don't want to be that guy, but I think watch and pray might be the answer.
- 35:41Like, I feel like sometimes it is just a sit back, observe more, talk less, pray that you can understand the other perspective.
- 35:49I was just at my grandmother's funeral, and that was one of the big things for me this last week is like, a lot of my grandparents.
- 35:55For me, it's really easy to be like, you know, both my grandfathers were very verbal.
- 36:01They were out loud.
- 36:01They were kind of.
- 36:02And it was easy for me, like, okay, I want to have his joy.
- 36:05I want to have his passion.
- 36:06I want, you know, like, it's in your face.
- 36:07And this last grandmother who passed notorious for not talking to people, for being in the corner reading the book, whatever.
- 36:14And I had a moment where I was like, man, because usually I'm a weirdo that I always take a challenge of, like, how am I going to live out their legacy going forward?
- 36:22Because, you know, I'm like, I'm not sure on the whole afterlife thing, personally.
- 36:25But I do believe we all live in one another, that the saints live in me.
- 36:28The python on the saints, to me, is a really important part of what I believe in Christianity.
- 36:33I don't worship the saints, but I believe their faith continues to be passed on.
- 36:36You know, it's talked about in second Timothy, and I'm like, I want to live that out.
- 36:40I want to live where I'm connected to my past.
- 36:41And that especially is going to include my grandparents.
- 36:43Right.
- 36:44It for me is really easy with some of the other ones.
- 36:46Fairy joy is loud.
- 36:47Laughter is loud.
- 36:48This last grandmother, I had to think about, like, you know, what I always saw her doing when she wasn't reading.
- 36:53She was watching her family, and she just loved to watch.
- 36:56And, like, actually, that might be the hardest one for me, learning that some moments are meant for me to be quiet and to just see what everybody else is doing, to watch, to see what they're doing, to just
- 37:05not have to be the one talking.
- 37:07And that's.
- 37:08I don't know, it's a challenge.
- 37:09But I think that might a little bit be the answer here.
- 37:11If I want to be better at seeing someone else's perspective, I might need to shut up more.
- 37:16Yeah, that's.
- 37:17I think that's all I got for that.
- 37:17I don't.
- 37:18I don't know if you have anything else you want to follow up with, the.
- 37:21The themes, the whatever, how much everybody needs to play birth by sleep or anything.
- 37:26You definitely need to play more.
- 37:27Birth by sleep.
- 37:28Yeah.
- 37:28Have an awareness of yourself.
- 37:29Knowing what causes problems in my life.
- 37:32Because I did the thing.
- 37:33Okay.
- 37:33Why.
- 37:33What was my motivation behind that?
- 37:35Okay.
- 37:35Does that make it right?
- 37:36Simply because that was my motivation.
- 37:38And then question yourselves.
- 37:39Have good people around you say, hey, I chose to do this because this.
- 37:42What did you see that I didn't see?
- 37:43That has helped me grow a lot because I tend to be the kind of person who, as Tara can be at times.
- 37:50This is the absolute.
- 37:51Because this is what I just heard, therefore, and I've grown past some of this, but I'm still not completely there, Therefore, that is my reality right now.
- 37:59And I don't have the full information.
- 38:01I have what has been given to me in this one specific scenario.
- 38:04I need to make a decision.
- 38:05Make decision, go.
- 38:05Not always the best place.
- 38:06Yeah.
- 38:07Sometimes you don't have time to make decisions, but that doesn't then justify making poor decisions even with limited information.
- 38:13It just means you made the wrong call.
- 38:15So maybe step back a little bit.
- 38:17Maybe you don't need to respond immediately.
- 38:18Maybe you think you need to respond immediately.
- 38:20This is something I had to learn because I am a problem solver and I love, like, I love solving problems because then that means there's no more problems.
- 38:27Like, that's great.
- 38:28No problems.
- 38:29Hakuna matata, man.
- 38:30That's what I live for.
- 38:31But, oh, see, I thought that's why me and you got along, because I'm a problem creator and you're a problem solver.
- 38:36But it does bring me joy to take you down every now and then, but as I need to.
- 38:43But at the same time, you help.
- 38:45Solve problems for me, and we work well together as a result of that.
- 38:48Yeah.
- 38:49And every now and then when we're doing Bible stuff, I'm like, I'm going to use my D link, Christian abilities and naturally abilities, and let's talk about this.
- 38:58No, yeah, no, no.
- 38:59That's all good stuff.
- 39:00That's all good stuff.
- 39:02Last thing.
- 39:03Decompress a little bit before we get to this wrap up a little less serious.
- 39:06What do you think is the correct order to play through this game?
- 39:09As you get to play through as each of the three, what order do you recommend?
- 39:14Terra Venta, Aquas, Aventus, Aquas.
- 39:16Goodness gracious.
- 39:17Terra, Ventus, Aqua.
- 39:18Let me speak English correctly today.
- 39:20And that's the typical chronological.
- 39:22If you do it that way, the typical one.
- 39:23But I think it's typical for a reason.
- 39:26I don't know, man, I'm torn.
- 39:27I definitely think Aqua needs to be last.
- 39:29Personally, I'm torn, though.
- 39:31I think it could be.
- 39:31It's fun to do Ventus, then Terra the Naqua because you see the middle and you can expand the story afterwards.
- 39:37Plus, to me, Ventus is still like the main of the three, just because you kind of get his backstory.
- 39:44It's how we're connected through the Chi and the Dark Roads and all the other mobile games.
- 39:49Like, he's the anchor to the story.
- 39:51So I like.
- 39:51I like starting with him and then expanding the story by playing the other two.
- 39:55But Aqua should definitely be last, I think.
- 39:57Yeah, I think that's just correct.
- 39:59All right, then.
- 40:00You ready to wrap this up?
- 40:01Let's do it.
- 40:02All right.
- 40:03So with that, guys, thank you for sticking around for two rounds of Kingdom Hearts.
- 40:08Birth by sleep shouldn't have surprised any of us if it did.
- 40:11Kind of did me a little bit, but it shouldn't have surprised me.
- 40:13Anyway, here we are again.
- 40:15We're going to talk about what worlds, characters, items we anticipate being announced next for Kingdom Hearts 4.
- 40:19If you want to go on our website, get some bonus material, you can do that.
- 40:22There's a link in the show's description for that.
- 40:25Recommendations.
- 40:27I mean, you know, I'm gonna just stay on point.
- 40:29I really do think if you're not gonna play the games, everybody's gamer.
- 40:33You should get the light novel for Birth by Sleep.
- 40:36It's actually just a really good story, especially if you like Star wars or if you like Disney or, you know, any of this stuff.
- 40:41I think it's worth the reading just by itself.
- 40:43So that's where I'm at.
- 40:44Christian, any recommendations for everybody?
- 40:46Yeah, I'm gonna Recommend the Phantom versus the Singh Brotherhood comic book.
- 40:51There's been two so far.
- 40:53Least in this.
- 40:54They're not.
- 40:55They're different issue number ones.
- 40:56They're called different things.
- 40:57But I can't remember who's doing.
- 40:59I'm sorry.
- 41:00But like, I love the Phantom.
- 41:02I love the stories being told here.
- 41:03They.
- 41:03They have.
- 41:04Whoever the writer is, has a good grasp on him.
- 41:07So go check those out.
- 41:08I will.
- 41:09I need you to send me a link to that, actually, because it sounds great.
- 41:12And I have a couple days still of being off and decompressing.
