- 0:01Welcome to the Blow Your mind podcast.
- 0:03If you're trying to figure out who you are, where headed, or
- 0:06how to trust yourself in the middle of it all, this show is
- 0:09for you. I'm Erica Sinner.
- 0:12I grew up in a trailer park on food stamps and I went on to
- 0:14build a multi 8 figure award-winning company without a
- 0:18safety net and without pretending it was easy.
- 0:21I'm now a CEOA best selling author and a philanthropist and
- 0:24what I've learned is this real confidence isn't a feeling, it's
- 0:28self trust built through evidence.
- 0:30This is a place for real conversations.
- 0:33You'll hear from me and occasionally my husband Chris,
- 0:35as we talk honestly about real life and the standards and
- 0:38decisions that separate talk from results.
- 0:42Let's blow your mind. I was standing there in the dead
- 0:45of winter looking at my book in the Barnes and Noble window on
- 0:515th Ave. What is life?
- 0:54How could this be? It was a moment I'll remember
- 0:58for the rest of my life. It was also a moment where I was
- 1:04terrified. And while the world might think
- 1:09I must have been on Cloud 9, I must have been celebrating every
- 1:11single day since I found out that it was there and that it
- 1:14was going to be there for two whole weeks.
- 1:15And everyone, I mean, on 5th Ave. in New York City, what are
- 1:18we talking about? And all I could feel was that
- 1:22sneaky little thing called imposter syndrome.
- 1:26Welcome to the Blow Your Mind podcast.
- 1:28I am so excited to be talking about the third part of my
- 1:32framework today, which is evidence.
- 1:35If you haven't listened to the last two episodes, I would say
- 1:38please push pause. Like go back and listen to
- 1:41identity and then systems. Because once you do those two
- 1:45things, then you get here. And this is where the really
- 1:48cool part happens. When you decide who you want to
- 1:52be in the world and then you put in proper systems and habits and
- 1:56standards that hold you to that person, you actually get to
- 2:00become them. And this really cool thing
- 2:03happens. You start to build proof, what I
- 2:05call evidence. Evidence is objective.
- 2:10It is not bad or good. It is just did it or did it not
- 2:13happen? What were the outcomes that
- 2:16happened because you were there? What are the outcomes of the
- 2:18effort that you are out doing in the world?
- 2:20All of that is evidence. And I believe it's so important
- 2:24to track it, to name it, to celebrate it, to sit in it, to
- 2:30own it, to own the evidence that you've created.
- 2:34That moment when I saw my book in the Barnes and Noble window,
- 2:37I just had this moment of like, if you know me at all and you've
- 2:41seen any of my like post, you'll see I always have these brightly
- 2:44colored shoes on. And I'm really proud of them.
- 2:47Actually. They're Manolo's, standing in
- 2:50front of that bookstore, walking in my red dress with my Manolo's
- 2:54on, which are sparkly and they're not cheap.
- 2:56Like, I'm not going to lie, right?
- 2:57I work really hard to get those shoes.
- 3:00But it was such an interesting feeling to be standing there in
- 3:04shoes I've wanted forever in New York City.
- 3:07Actually looking at the proof of, like, my book, my family's
- 3:10photo that used to hang on top of my fireplace is actually on a
- 3:14book in the Barnes and Noble window.
- 3:16And all I felt was, does it belong there?
- 3:21What if people buy it and read it and are like, Oh my God, why
- 3:23is this even in the bookstore? Like, why is this in the window?
- 3:26Why does it deserve to be here? And it's sitting there next to
- 3:29another book that was called the The Generous Leader.
- 3:32And I was like, what? But their book belongs.
- 3:33But does mine belong? Am I really an author?
- 3:36It's that sneaky thing, imposter syndrome, that it's that voice
- 3:39inside your head that says, like, who am I to want all of
- 3:43this, to dream this big, to think that this is possible for
- 3:47me? It's that voice that says, if
- 3:51you all really knew me, like, would you think that my success
- 3:54was an accident? Would you actually think that I
- 3:57was smart, capable, worthy, deserving enough of all of this?
- 4:03Imposter syndrome is such a sneaky thing because it comes up
- 4:07all of the time. And you know, when I shared, I,
- 4:09I had found out two weeks prior to that day where I actually got
- 4:13to see it myself. And I would talked about this
- 4:16earlier where I, I, everybody thought I was on cloud 9.
- 4:19I got all of the text messages, all of the celebrations.
- 4:21I had hundreds of comments on the actual photo that the store
- 4:24had sent me before I actually made it out to New York.
- 4:27And that day felt a little bit unreal and surreal.
- 4:32But the next day I had actually been on a trip, on a client
- 4:35trip. And so I was alone in my hotel
- 4:37room and I remember I was just crying.
- 4:40I was like in tears of like, and I was scared and it didn't feel
- 4:46like I thought it was going to feel.
- 4:48And I think that is that imposter syndrome, which goes
- 4:52back to the identity that I talked about two episodes ago
- 4:55about why it's so important for us to not believe what we were
- 4:58taught about ourselves and to really decide who we are and,
- 5:02and live up to that. And through our systems and
- 5:04through the consistency and through disciplined action,
- 5:06prove to yourself that you are worthy and that you've always
- 5:09been worthy. And the evidence to me, this
- 5:12third part of the framework evidence, it's not about
- 5:15bragging. It's really about curating all
- 5:18of the evidence, all of the proof that you can point to to
- 5:20say like, yeah, I did those things.
- 5:23This is real. And the reason I talk about all
- 5:26of my success and all of the things that I have done and the
- 5:28fact that we're a multi 8 figure company, the fact that I'm a
- 5:31best selling author, the fact that I do get to be on TV quite
- 5:34often. And that feels really good that
- 5:35somebody wants to hear my voice, my story, my mission.
- 5:38And that's not anything other than to just point to evidence.
- 5:41It's really real. That doesn't say like, results
- 5:44are not the thing that make you worthy.
- 5:45That's not what evidence is. I would even say that like, the
- 5:48impact that you make out in the world is also not the thing that
- 5:51makes you worthy. I believe evidence and proof is
- 5:55truly the antidote to imposter syndrome.
- 5:57Because every time that voice sneaks up in me and says, like,
- 6:01do you really deserve this? Is this really real?
- 6:03Are you capable of doing that? I'm like, yeah, I did that.
- 6:06And I pointed that and I pointed that.
- 6:08And I've done these things out in the world.
- 6:10And it is not subjective. It is just the truth.
- 6:12It is evidence. It's a reality of the situation.
- 6:15And that's a big deal because then it starts to rewire your
- 6:19brain and it makes it so that you're not focusing on the
- 6:23results, the impact, All of the things, all of those things are
- 6:25not the things that make you worthy.
- 6:27It just makes it impossible for your brain to ignore the
- 6:31worthiness that has always been there, that has always been
- 6:35inside of you. That's the really cool thing
- 6:38about evidence. And in my framework, I, you
- 6:40know, when I talk to university students, I tell them about how
- 6:44since I was 21, I've had this folder in my inbox called You
- 6:47are awesome. It's literally called that.
- 6:49I still have this folder and in it, I have always saved like
- 6:54emails that I've received from people that says because of you
- 6:56this happened. So it's not just like great job
- 6:58emails. It's like the outcome emails,
- 7:01the results emails and I always put them into that folder.
- 7:03And the reason that I loved having my your awesome folder is
- 7:06because when I was looking for a new job, I had all of the proof
- 7:10of the things that I had done in the world that like This is why
- 7:13I'm capable because it's so interesting when you got to sit
- 7:16down and like actually write your resume, you're like, wait a
- 7:19second, like what are all the things that it did in the last
- 7:21year or when you're up for promotion or when you're about
- 7:23to get a review at your company. It's so interesting how our
- 7:27brains forget all of the amazing things that we have done.
- 7:31And so why aren't we tracking it?
- 7:33Why aren't we creating our own evidence folder?
- 7:35Why don't we put those things in an easily accessible place so
- 7:38that we can actually then tell the truth about the impact that
- 7:41we've had, All of the amazing things that have happened
- 7:44because you have been there. And so I have my your awesome
- 7:48folder in my Outlook e-mail, which, yeah, I still have it.
- 7:51And as I've become ACEO and a founder and as I've started to
- 7:54do things with tiny superheroes, I have a separate one on my tiny
- 7:57superheroes e-mail. I it's become more and more
- 8:00about the things that my team has done, that my company has
- 8:03done, the patience that we've impacted, but it just still
- 8:06matters to track all of those things.
- 8:09And that's what I do professionally, but also
- 8:11personally, I have what I call my pick me up folder and that is
- 8:16just an album in my phone that's called You are loved.
- 8:19And it is screenshots. It's screenshots of text
- 8:23messages that I've gotten from my friends that are just like,
- 8:25hey girl, just thinking about you today and I love you.
- 8:28And I'm like, Oh my God. Like it just didn't mean
- 8:30something to me. It is DMS of people who have
- 8:33sent me notes. I, I got Adm one time from a
- 8:39psychiatrist and he and his husband had just lost their dog.
- 8:43And he had said, I would just want to thank you for the work
- 8:45that you were doing out in the world to normalize the loss of
- 8:49an animal, but also like to really push for pet bereavement
- 8:53leave to be a thing. Because here I am a psychiatrist
- 8:56and I'm, I'm ashamed to talk about it at work, which is
- 9:00really surprising to me, right? Because here's somebody who is
- 9:03in the mental healthcare space and they're afraid to go to work
- 9:07and just tell the truth that a part of their family has just
- 9:09passed away and they need some time off so they can show up as
- 9:12their best self so they can be there for their patients.
- 9:14And so that's one that I was really proud to screenshot and
- 9:17save and put into my You Are Loved folder.
- 9:20But I also, you know, these are these types of screenshots.
- 9:24They're, they're just, they're not for anyone else.
- 9:27They're just for you so that you can go back and, and know the
- 9:31impact that you've already made. The, the, there are people that
- 9:35love you and care about you. Because sometimes that imposter
- 9:37syndrome really sneaks up on you and the lies and the stories
- 9:41that you believe about yourself can feel really loud.
- 9:44They can feel really true. You can feel really alone and
- 9:49sometimes we just need to get out of our own head and really
- 9:52see the truth of who we really are.
- 9:54And that only comes when you build evidence, when you have a
- 9:56place, when you can go look, when you're in those moments of
- 9:59panic, when you're in those moments of loneliness, when
- 10:01you're in those moments of like, should I keep going?
- 10:04Is the work that I'm doing, Matt?
- 10:06Like doesn't matter. And so for me that picked me up
- 10:09folder. I mean, I have, if you look at
- 10:11it now, it's really funny because it's still like the
- 10:13iPhone text messages that were like those weird bubbles like
- 10:17years ago all the way to the ones that are now.
- 10:20And sometimes I go back and I go years back and I look at that
- 10:24album and I'm like, wow, some of these messages that I've saved,
- 10:27it took me back to where I was in that moment.
- 10:30And I get to realize how far I've come and who I am now.
- 10:34And what are the problems that I'm worried about today and what
- 10:37are the things that I care about today?
- 10:39And how big has my life gotten today?
- 10:43And that also reminds me, so as I'm dealing with things today,
- 10:45I'm like, Oh my gosh, like I'm only building my capacity to
- 10:48hold even more. And I'm going to be able to
- 10:50handle even more. And who will I be in five years
- 10:52from now, right? Because I still have my identity
- 10:56of who I want to be. And I'm still building my
- 10:58systems to get me to be that girl.
- 11:01And I'm going to keep building my evidence to go back and look
- 11:05at to remind me that I am already in motion, that I am not
- 11:08behind, that I am loved by people who care about me and
- 11:13even strangers I've never even met.
- 11:14There's the connection. That is the thing that is
- 11:17beautiful about social media. I have so many connections
- 11:19around the world of people I've never met, but man, they are
- 11:23there for me and I'm there for them.
- 11:24And that's a beautiful thing. And so I want to say to you as
- 11:29the mind blown moment is that I truly believe that the antidote
- 11:33to imposter syndrome is evidence.
- 11:36And I believe that the only way that we can combat imposter
- 11:40syndrome is to have a place that you can point to, to say, I
- 11:43really did all of those things. And the only way to do that is
- 11:45to track it. And so I'm hoping that my
- 11:48systems of my, your awesome folder or your pick me up my
- 11:51your pick me up folder that those things work for you.
- 11:55And the challenge that I have for you this week is build one.
- 11:59Start building your your awesome folder or your pygmy up folder,
- 12:03whichever one makes more sense to you.
- 12:05Or tell me about a way that you're capturing and tracking
- 12:08your evidence. I'm excited to learn from you
- 12:11too, and to inspire each other of how do we all track the
- 12:15amazing things that we are doing.
- 12:16And I want to leave you on today's episode, you know, not
- 12:20not just inspired, but with your own proof.
- 12:23And so I want you to think about someone you could text that you
- 12:27could just say like, hey, this might be a weird text, but can
- 12:32you just share with me like a moment when you saw me show up
- 12:35in a way that like really impressed you or in something
- 12:37that stayed with you about me or where I don't know you're going
- 12:41to, you're going to be surprised by what people share with you
- 12:44that you don't even remember happening.
- 12:46But I want you to text someone and I want you to ask them.
- 12:50And when they text you back, I want you to screenshot it.
- 12:52And I want it to be evidence document number one in your pick
- 12:55me up folder because I want you to see that you're not behind.
- 13:00That there are already so many people who care about you, who
- 13:02you've impacted already with the things that you do, with the
- 13:05love that you put out in the world, with the light that is
- 13:07inside of you, that you shine so brightly.
- 13:10And sometimes we just don't even see our own lights.
- 13:13And I wanted to reflect back on you by seeing the response that
- 13:18you get. And then as you move forward,
- 13:20keep screenshotting, keep saving it, keep building your evidence
- 13:24folder, and DM me, tag me. Once you get so many, it's going
- 13:28to be a little collage, so you don't even have to share what's
- 13:30actually in them. But I would love to see your
- 13:32evidence folder start to build up.
- 13:34And so DM me, tag me, share it with somebody else.
- 13:37And I just can't wait to see you all blow your own minds.
- 13:41Here we go. I'll see you next time.
- 13:44Thanks for listening to the Blow Your Mind podcast.
- 13:47If something you heard today stayed with you, that's your
- 13:49cue. Apply one idea.
- 13:51Keep one promise to yourself this week because that's how you
- 13:55blow your mind. If this helped you build proof,
- 13:57shift your identity, or have an aha moment, share your receipts
- 14:01on Instagram and tag me at Erica under score Center.
- 14:05Leave a review wherever you're listening so more people can
- 14:08find this work and blow their minds too.
- 14:10I'll see you next time.
