- 0:23Speaker 1: This one is a different one, So what's going on.
- 0:26Speaker 2: It's weird, you know. I never really talk about it
- 0:29Speaker 2: publicly because the few people that I did tell they
- 0:31Speaker 2: just kind of look at me like I'm describing with
- 0:33Speaker 2: the Netflix documentary. Wow. Okay, So I found out in
- 0:38Speaker 2: my early twenties that my entire life was basically built
- 0:41Speaker 2: on a lie. The people that I thought were my
- 0:44Speaker 2: parents were actually my grandparents, and the woman I thought
- 0:49Speaker 2: was me hold on, yeah, yeah.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Hold on, you said the people that you thought were
- 0:54Speaker 1: your parents were actually your grandparents? Whoa correct? Okay?
- 1:00Speaker 2: I thought with my older sister she was my mother.
- 1:05Speaker 1: This just, yeah, gave me the weirdest like creeps. Yeah,
- 1:09Speaker 1: it does feel like your whole life's a lie. That's
- 1:11Speaker 1: and it does sound like a Netflix special. Yeah, i'd
- 1:13Speaker 1: watch it, well, I would that. Okay, what tell me?
- 1:18Speaker 1: I mean how I don't even I'm rarely speechless.
- 1:22Speaker 2: How okay? So, like growing up, nothing really seemed that unusual.
- 1:27Speaker 2: My parents were older, like older than most of my
- 1:30Speaker 2: friend's parents, but not so much older that I questioned it. Yeah.
- 1:34Speaker 2: They were really strict and private people, like not exactly
- 1:38Speaker 2: the type you sat down with and had big conversations with,
- 1:40Speaker 2: you know, so I never really asked a lot of questions.
- 1:44Speaker 2: So the woman I thought was my sister, she wasn't
- 1:47Speaker 2: around very much. She'd like pop in and out every
- 1:49Speaker 2: now and then and disappear for a long time, and
- 1:52Speaker 2: nobody ever told me why. It all makes sense now,
- 1:55Speaker 2: of course. So she struggled with addiction for most of
- 1:58Speaker 2: her life. And what I didn't know was that she
- 2:02Speaker 2: had me when she was only sixteen.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Wow.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, so my grand my grandparents parents got legal
- 2:10Speaker 2: custody of me and adopted me.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Really okay, which happens, I mean this, but usually it
- 2:16Speaker 1: does play out to where they say they're the they're
- 2:20Speaker 1: the parents, right, that's the part that got me.
- 2:23Speaker 2: I mean, they kept that secret for years and the
- 2:26Speaker 2: only reason I ever found out was because my grandfather
- 2:30Speaker 2: got really sick and as he got worse, he told
- 2:33Speaker 2: my grandmother that he couldn't pass away without telling me
- 2:36Speaker 2: the truth.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Oh man, okay, so you eventually find out, And how
- 2:41Speaker 1: did they tell you? Like, how does that even go down?
- 2:44Speaker 1: I know?
- 2:44Speaker 2: Right, So, like one night they sat me down, like
- 2:46Speaker 2: we have something to tell you, and I'm like, oh,
- 2:48Speaker 2: they're gonna tell me he doesn't have a lot of
- 2:49Speaker 2: time left, you know. Instead, they totally changed my life.
- 2:54Speaker 2: And I really honestly don't remember that much after hearing
- 2:56Speaker 2: those words, like you're actually were actually your grandparents, everything
- 3:01Speaker 2: just kind of a blur and like, you know, all
- 3:03Speaker 2: of a sudden, every memory you have feels different.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, because you questioned, everything got to be in shock.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Yeah, Like every photo, every holiday, every conversation, it's like
- 3:13Speaker 2: somebody hand to meet some new script of my own
- 3:16Speaker 2: life and told me I've been reading the wrong one
- 3:18Speaker 2: the whole time.
- 3:18Speaker 1: You know, And you never really had any kind of
- 3:22Speaker 1: like a red flag pop up, like okay, well that
- 3:24Speaker 1: was weird. Like when you look back now, it's probably
- 3:26Speaker 1: easier because hindsight's twenty twenty.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Yes, yes there were clues. A few years earlier, my mom,
- 3:33Speaker 2: my biological mom, passed away from an overdose and at
- 3:37Speaker 2: the time I thought I had lost my sister. But
- 3:40Speaker 2: what was weird was like how quickly everything happened. There
- 3:43Speaker 2: really wasn't a funeral, no big gathering or anything, just
- 3:46Speaker 2: a small celebration of life with like immediate family. And
- 3:51Speaker 2: I remember feeling like people were grieving like way harder
- 3:54Speaker 2: than I understood.
- 3:56Speaker 1: And now I know why.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Like I don't hate my grandparents where they did, but
- 4:01Speaker 2: I mean they honestly they saved me from yeah, pretty
- 4:04Speaker 2: heard upbringing. You know, they gave me stability and a
- 4:07Speaker 2: home and a chance of a normal life that I
- 4:09Speaker 2: wouldn't have had, you.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Know, right. But still it's a lot to feel. Just
- 4:14Speaker 1: just the thought of being lied to for a long
- 4:16Speaker 1: time isn't settling, right, you know.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Yeah, it's messed up. It messed me up. You know.
- 4:22Speaker 1: That's what I was going to ask you, Like, did
- 4:24Speaker 1: is this something that you're still dealing with? Obviously?
- 4:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's like hard to explain, Like you
- 4:29Speaker 2: learn your entire identity isn't exactly what you thought it was.
- 4:32Speaker 2: And I've spent a lot of time and therapy trying
- 4:34Speaker 2: to figure it out and process it. And my father's
- 4:37Speaker 2: gone now. My grandmother doesn't really like talking about any
- 4:40Speaker 2: of it. Most questions I ask are like, I get
- 4:43Speaker 2: short answers or like total silence.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Real, Yeah, I have a.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Lot of questions. A lot of stuff is missing, and
- 4:50Speaker 2: you know that that's the hardest part. I think I
- 4:52Speaker 2: probably never know.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Yeah, and yeah, and it's personal obviously for your grandma
- 4:57Speaker 1: or your mom. Gosh, like, what are you even saying?
- 5:00Speaker 1: You thought she was your mother? She's your grandmother, but
- 5:02Speaker 1: your grandfather. You know, you still call her mom? Okay, Yeah,
- 5:06Speaker 1: I mean yeah, yeah, I do, right, And but yeah,
- 5:09Speaker 1: to have your mother pass away so you can't ask
- 5:11Speaker 1: her questions about it, Yeah, that's a lot. Wow, what
- 5:14Speaker 1: a powerful secret. Well, it sounds like you turned out
- 5:18Speaker 1: good and as crazy as it is, it probably built
- 5:21Speaker 1: a lot of character for you. And and you know,
- 5:24Speaker 1: you learn a lot from yourself when you go through
- 5:26Speaker 1: stuff like this. Unfortunately, but you do so well. Thank
- 5:30Speaker 1: you for sharing that. I really appreciate that, and I
- 5:33Speaker 1: hope it works out for you and maybe you get
- 5:35Speaker 1: some of the answers that you you want and that
- 5:37Speaker 1: you need. Really, thank you and good luck with everything. Okay,
- 5:40Speaker 1: thank you again, thinks tell me that's not a Netflix
- 5:44Speaker 1: special for sure. Imagine you go your whole life and
- 5:46Speaker 1: all of a sudden you're grown up and you find
- 5:48Speaker 1: that out. You find out in your twenties that your
- 5:51Speaker 1: grandma is your mom or your yeah, yeah, everything's changed.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Your mom is your grandma, yeah, and your shocking, and
- 5:59Speaker 1: your sister was your mom. Dad is crazy
