- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Dirty Rush, The Truth about Sorority Life with
- 0:04Speaker 1: your hosts me Gia Judice, Daisy Kent, and Jennifer Fessler. Hi.
- 0:12Speaker 2: This is Joan Vassost and I am joined by Jenfessler
- 0:16Speaker 2: and Daisy Kent. Today we're here to talk all things
- 0:20Speaker 2: dorm rooms.
- 0:21Speaker 1: We are bringing in a very talented designer, very beautiful style.
- 0:27Speaker 1: We are looking right now at this extraordinary dorm room.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Let's talk to interior designer Lisa Dias.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Hi.
- 0:36Speaker 4: Hi, Lisa, are all good, Thank you for joining us,
- 0:41Speaker 4: Thank you for having me.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Where are you from? We hear the accent?
- 0:45Speaker 4: Okay, so I was afraid of that. I am Jackson, Mississippi. Nice.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know.
- 0:53Speaker 4: I don't have an accent, but everybody else does.
- 0:55Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, you have an accent here on this
- 0:59Speaker 1: podcast and it's adorable.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:02Speaker 2: I'm jealous. I want one.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 1:04Speaker 4: I don't get that often.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Well, tell us Lisa about first quick yourself. Where'd you
- 1:10Speaker 1: go to school? Why did you want to design the
- 1:12Speaker 1: dorm rooms?
- 1:13Speaker 4: I actually went to school at Delta State University, which
- 1:15Speaker 4: was a small college here in town, but ended up
- 1:18Speaker 4: doing a lot of set design. I was an art major.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Design major. The dorm story, though, is a little bit
- 1:28Speaker 4: unbelievable because I started designing dorms in twenty fifteen for
- 1:32Speaker 4: blond people.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:35Speaker 4: So so here's the way that it evolved is I'm
- 1:39Speaker 4: a painter and I'm an artist, and you know, when
- 1:43Speaker 4: I went to when I went to school, I was
- 1:45Speaker 4: very creative. But I used to get homesick a lot.
- 1:49Speaker 4: And so my dorm, even though my dorm, you guys,
- 1:52Speaker 4: was like one mile away from my house, I got homesick.
- 1:55Speaker 4: But because I love my you know, my family. I
- 1:58Speaker 4: have such a fun family. But anyway, so I remember, like,
- 2:01Speaker 4: because that was in the eighties, I had roblow posters
- 2:03Speaker 4: and a Neon phone and you know, a zebra bread
- 2:07Speaker 4: bedspread from Spiegel, which you know the time. That's all.
- 2:10Speaker 4: It was fabulous. But I remember dipping my hands in
- 2:13Speaker 4: like black oil based paint and like doing designs all
- 2:16Speaker 4: over my walls and design it well you know what
- 2:18Speaker 4: that was before I knew you couldn't do ol based
- 2:20Speaker 4: on walls. And I did get fined, but you know,
- 2:24Speaker 4: it was just.
- 2:25Speaker 3: It's all worth it.
- 2:27Speaker 4: It was all It was so worth it because it
- 2:28Speaker 4: was the space that I loved and I didn't get homesick,
- 2:30Speaker 4: and you know, and I felt like I was home
- 2:33Speaker 4: even though I wasn't home. So but fast forward and
- 2:38Speaker 4: I moved to Jackson. I lived in Los Angeles a
- 2:41Speaker 4: little while, and I've lived all over, but moved back
- 2:44Speaker 4: to Mississippi and I was in Jackson and this this
- 2:48Speaker 4: lady was like, Lisa, you really need to since you paint,
- 2:50Speaker 4: you need to join this Canton flea market. You know,
- 2:54Speaker 4: it's a big deal. Millions of people go. So you
- 2:56Speaker 4: still you need to set up a booth and sell
- 2:58Speaker 4: your things. So I was like, oh, okay. At the time,
- 3:00Speaker 4: I did pointalism paintings, which is tons of tiny little
- 3:03Speaker 4: dots that ended up making up you know, painting. They're
- 3:06Speaker 4: very time consuming. But y'all, y'all, I didn't sell one
- 3:10Speaker 4: thing all day, Like I was there the whole day.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Did not sell one thing because it wasn't on a stick,
- 3:15Speaker 4: it didn't say happy fall, y'all. I mean, I was
- 3:17Speaker 4: clearly I had, like, you know, my art was they're
- 3:21Speaker 4: nice pieces, well so I think, And but at the
- 3:25Speaker 4: end of the day, this mom and daughter walked into
- 3:28Speaker 4: my booths and I was kind of taking it down,
- 3:31Speaker 4: and she started feeling everything, y'all. She was the mom
- 3:35Speaker 4: was blonde. The daughter was telling her what was in
- 3:39Speaker 4: the painting, and she was touching it and feeling it
- 3:41Speaker 4: because it was pointalism and all these tiny little dots.
- 3:43Speaker 4: She was feeling her way through the art. And so
- 3:47Speaker 4: I became so intrigued with that, how y'all. She bought
- 3:51Speaker 4: four paintings from me, and so it was kind of
- 3:53Speaker 4: the running joke forever that I can't sell anything unless
- 3:57Speaker 4: people can't see it. But it became very intrigued with this.
- 4:04Speaker 4: And so Mississippi is known for they have a school
- 4:08Speaker 4: for the deaf and blind, and so I reached out
- 4:12Speaker 4: to them and I viewed both campuses. The deaf school
- 4:17Speaker 4: was gorgeous. They had new bamboo flooring, they had state
- 4:21Speaker 4: of the art everything. And then when I went to
- 4:23Speaker 4: the school for the blind, you know, which was across
- 4:26Speaker 4: the sidewalk, it was the most depressing thing.
- 4:30Speaker 3: It was.
- 4:31Speaker 4: It made me homesick and I didn't even live there,
- 4:33Speaker 4: and I just got that same homesick feeling that I
- 4:35Speaker 4: did back when, you know, I was in college at
- 4:37Speaker 4: the dorm and they have over I think we did
- 4:41Speaker 4: over forty dorms there, so what I did was I
- 4:45Speaker 4: was asking them. I said, do y'all not get funded
- 4:48Speaker 4: by the state. They said, oh, no, we get a
- 4:49Speaker 4: lot of money from the state. But everyone has a
- 4:53Speaker 4: different level of blindness, and so some see pitch blacks,
- 4:57Speaker 4: some see like little tiny pinholes, you know. Some can
- 5:00Speaker 4: see color and it's blurry, you know. So they said,
- 5:03Speaker 4: we have to buy textbooks to accommodate every single type
- 5:08Speaker 4: of blindness. So one textbook could be twenty to forty
- 5:10Speaker 4: thousand dollars depending on the type of blondness you have.
- 5:14Speaker 4: So that so they didn't have enough money to fund
- 5:17Speaker 4: the living quarters. So I spearheaded. You know, I'm just
- 5:21Speaker 4: a professional volunteer. I raise money all the time and
- 5:25Speaker 4: not with any organizations, just on my own when I
- 5:28Speaker 4: see a call that I'm passionate about, and I reached
- 5:30Speaker 4: out to a lot of people. I think this was
- 5:32Speaker 4: like twenty fifteen. I raised about ten thousand dollars to
- 5:36Speaker 4: redo about It was about, I guess, about thirty dorms,
- 5:40Speaker 4: thirty doors, and the lobbies and the kitchen, and so
- 5:44Speaker 4: everybody was kept saying, you know, why are you doing this?
- 5:46Speaker 4: They can't see and I'm like, y'all, but they can
- 5:49Speaker 4: and they can feel, and so I reached out to
- 5:52Speaker 4: some schools that needed you know, volunteer hours, you know,
- 5:55Speaker 4: high school students, and I just kind of let them lose,
- 5:58Speaker 4: gave them my vision, told them, you know, kind of
- 6:00Speaker 4: guided them. But in every room, because with such a
- 6:03Speaker 4: small budget for that many rooms plus a lobby, plus
- 6:07Speaker 4: the kitchen plus everything, I really focused on colors, shapes, textures,
- 6:14Speaker 4: you know, and I would paint paintings on the walls,
- 6:17Speaker 4: but they would all have a texture to them, or
- 6:18Speaker 4: the grass would have really you know, fill up the grass,
- 6:21Speaker 4: or and I wanted it to be very I guess
- 6:25Speaker 4: where they could interact and fill at home and still
- 6:28Speaker 4: be entertained, and then still try to hit every level
- 6:32Speaker 4: of type of blindness so that each girl could experience
- 6:35Speaker 4: something while they were in the room and in the
- 6:37Speaker 4: hall and on the lobby. And so honestly, that's kind
- 6:40Speaker 4: of where it started, was I started designing for blind people.
- 6:44Speaker 1: I think that this honestly, like because because we're talking
- 6:48Speaker 1: obviously we're talking about this to some of the young women,
- 6:52Speaker 1: and also too, we talked to another interior designer who's wonderful,
- 6:55Speaker 1: but what you're describing, right, now to me is so interesting.
- 7:00Speaker 4: It is interesting, isn't it.
- 7:02Speaker 3: That it is the most that is just so beautiful?
- 7:05Speaker 4: Oh well, thank you.
- 7:06Speaker 1: That kind of work to me feels it's all important.
- 7:10Speaker 1: And you know, you want young girls to feel great
- 7:12Speaker 1: about where they are and where they're living, where they.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Put their head down.
- 7:16Speaker 1: But that is that's an amazing story.
- 7:18Speaker 2: It truly is. And you know the fact that they
- 7:20Speaker 2: are leaving their homes and they have such a challenge
- 7:23Speaker 2: because they're blind, and that they come into a space
- 7:26Speaker 2: that feels like home or makes them feel happy to
- 7:29Speaker 2: enter it, that like just made my day, Like I
- 7:32Speaker 2: want to cry for them.
- 7:33Speaker 4: Okay, well, thank you, I'm crying tearing up, Yeah, tearing
- 7:36Speaker 4: up thinking about it. Because then they did a perception
- 7:38Speaker 4: to thank me. And then some of the donors that
- 7:40Speaker 4: I was able to get and so y'all, they cooked
- 7:42Speaker 4: and they made cookies and they gave tours to all
- 7:45Speaker 4: of the donors and with their little walking sticks and
- 7:48Speaker 4: showed them what their favorite parts were. And it really
- 7:51Speaker 4: was you know, I think it was one of the
- 7:53Speaker 4: best times of my life as well. You know, who
- 7:56Speaker 4: knew that Canton fleame market when I didn't sell one
- 7:58Speaker 4: thing what all it would you know, what it would
- 8:00Speaker 4: turn into?
- 8:01Speaker 3: Yea, yeah, that was in fifteen.
- 8:05Speaker 4: It was twenty fifteen. Okay, cool.
- 8:07Speaker 1: So how was it like evolved from them because or
- 8:10Speaker 1: from then?
- 8:10Speaker 3: Because now you're still doing dorm rooms, right.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Right, I'm still doing dorm rooms, and y'all there's have
- 8:15Speaker 4: held up. I went and visited not too long ago,
- 8:18Speaker 4: and I was shocked to see how well that it was,
- 8:21Speaker 4: that it held up. And so you know, and nothing
- 8:24Speaker 4: is really like out of season or or enough that
- 8:29Speaker 4: you know, trends come and go, but the way we
- 8:32Speaker 4: did it was just it was magical. It was colorful,
- 8:35Speaker 4: it was bright, it was cheery. And I felt so
- 8:38Speaker 4: sorry because these girls, you know, some of them had
- 8:40Speaker 4: to stay through the weekend. Some of them would get
- 8:42Speaker 4: get to go home on the weekends. So I had
- 8:45Speaker 4: like all of the bedding, you know, I had donations
- 8:49Speaker 4: so I could do new bedding, new bedtoppers, the phone pads,
- 8:52Speaker 4: the you know, the new pillows, just anything that could
- 8:55Speaker 4: make it very comfortable for them, just because I don't
- 8:58Speaker 4: ever as a mom, being homesick is the worst the
- 9:01Speaker 4: one I think a child can have, and a lot
- 9:04Speaker 4: of you know, my husband says, I don't understand that
- 9:06Speaker 4: homesick feeling y'all keep talking about, and I'm like, maybe
- 9:08Speaker 4: it's a girl thing. I don't know, but I never
- 9:11Speaker 4: want a child to feel homesick and where they can't
- 9:13Speaker 4: get home or see their parents or their or their mom.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:17Speaker 1: I think that's beautiful all of that, and I just
- 9:19Speaker 1: I do want to touch on sort of quickly now
- 9:22Speaker 1: because I don't want to run out of time. But
- 9:24Speaker 1: you designed the We have pictures of the most beautiful
- 9:27Speaker 1: dorm room that you designed. It is again, we had
- 9:30Speaker 1: another designer on here. Hers was fabulous and they were
- 9:32Speaker 1: really bold colors. This is a sort of very feminine girl.
- 9:37Speaker 1: I'm looking at.
- 9:38Speaker 3: It, I feel like Mazie gets will be right up
- 9:40Speaker 3: your alley.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 9:57Speaker 2: You know what strikes me the most about this that
- 9:59Speaker 2: it looks, first of all, nothing like a dorm room,
- 10:01Speaker 2: and it doesn't look like a place you could ever
- 10:03Speaker 2: actually study because I feel like their their desks are
- 10:07Speaker 2: now these beautiful vanities. So your girls are gonna have
- 10:10Speaker 2: to go to the library because you have no place
- 10:11Speaker 2: to study here, which I mean, I think the trade
- 10:13Speaker 2: off was just fine me too.
- 10:15Speaker 4: Well, thank you. It's crazy because a lot. You know,
- 10:18Speaker 4: I never studied at a desk. I always studied, you know,
- 10:21Speaker 4: on my bed or with a pillow. You know. My
- 10:23Speaker 4: mom's like, Okay, your bed's not the best place to study,
- 10:26Speaker 4: but you know, that's just always where I I did it.
- 10:27Speaker 4: And it was crazy because I was the type personality
- 10:30Speaker 4: where I could not study unless my room was completely clean,
- 10:33Speaker 4: and then I could study. But it was so funny
- 10:36Speaker 4: because the girls that I did this dorm room for
- 10:38Speaker 4: were the same way, Like, you know, I see a
- 10:41Speaker 4: lot of comments, Oh, I can't wait to see this
- 10:42Speaker 4: dorm in two months or three months, And I was like,
- 10:45Speaker 4: I've guarantee with these girls it's gonna be the same.
- 10:47Speaker 4: They were vacuum before I even left.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Again, Oh oh my god.
- 10:50Speaker 1: If I hadn't wait for my dorm room to be
- 10:52Speaker 1: clean to study, I would have failed right out.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Thank you for coming and have.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Them is a she's an ol Miss cheerleader, and so
- 11:03Speaker 4: we were laughing that we're gonna we're gonna put a
- 11:05Speaker 4: little tiny trampling in the middle of the bed so
- 11:07Speaker 4: she could just jump on in that bed when she
- 11:08Speaker 4: could be The beds are so called their four stories.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Yeah, they're so high.
- 11:13Speaker 4: I mean there's so much underneath those beds that you know,
- 11:15Speaker 4: just for maximum storage and the dressers and everything. But yeah,
- 11:19Speaker 4: we joked with her that we were gonna put her
- 11:21Speaker 4: little mini trampoline in the middle. I was like, well,
- 11:23Speaker 4: that might be kind of fun for next year you
- 11:24Speaker 4: get exercise and jump on in that bed.
- 11:26Speaker 2: What is your favorite place to source this kind of stuff? So,
- 11:29Speaker 2: like people are listening to this that are getting ready
- 11:31Speaker 2: to move their kids into college, like, where do you
- 11:33Speaker 2: go to find this great stuff that is kind of
- 11:35Speaker 2: dorm sized?
- 11:36Speaker 4: So I will tell you I'm a huge fan and
- 11:39Speaker 4: I've been using spoon Flower forever because they run fabulous
- 11:44Speaker 4: sales in the summer. So I always tell my people
- 11:46Speaker 4: to wait until the Memorial Day sales Labor Day sales,
- 11:49Speaker 4: and then you get the sale price plus the new
- 11:52Speaker 4: entering your email sale. But spoon Flower does it where
- 11:55Speaker 4: you can do coordinating wallpaper, fabrics, shower curtains, you name it.
- 12:01Speaker 4: The same pattern can be done in pillow cases, throw pillows,
- 12:06Speaker 4: so you are it is so user friendly and you're
- 12:08Speaker 4: able to click on this pillow and pull it with
- 12:11Speaker 4: this fabric, and pull it with this fabric and even
- 12:13Speaker 4: if you aren't good at that, anybody can do it,
- 12:16Speaker 4: and anybody can say I click on this pillow to
- 12:19Speaker 4: match this and this. It is very user friendly.
- 12:21Speaker 3: You like it more than dorma fat I do.
- 12:23Speaker 4: But Spoonflower gives you such a range that no matter
- 12:28Speaker 4: what your personality is, you can find a fabric that
- 12:31Speaker 4: suits your personality. I found that a lot of girls.
- 12:34Speaker 4: It's hard when you are when you are trying to
- 12:37Speaker 4: please two moms, two daughters. Yeah, two budgets, and with
- 12:42Speaker 4: this corner room this I had a corner room this
- 12:44Speaker 4: past year was three girls, three moms, and it's just
- 12:47Speaker 4: you know, you got different budgets, different taste, different everything.
- 12:50Speaker 4: So with Spoonflower, I was able to pull like, Okay,
- 12:53Speaker 4: you like this fa you like zebras, you like flowers.
- 12:57Speaker 4: I can coordinate it on this one site and then
- 13:00Speaker 4: get a throat pill level and make it happen for
- 13:01Speaker 4: both of you, and it just kind of pleases everybody. Amazon,
- 13:04Speaker 4: of course is great. Wayfair is great, you know for
- 13:07Speaker 4: price points, because you know we go to used all
- 13:12Speaker 4: these used dorm sites at the end of the year
- 13:13Speaker 4: all the time and buy everything used, we repaint it.
- 13:16Speaker 4: I'll add some molding to it. I'll, you know, hot
- 13:19Speaker 4: glue something to it, or hot glue some wallpaper. You know,
- 13:21Speaker 4: we'll we'll do it, and trying to change it up
- 13:23Speaker 4: and make it their own. But you know, I've even
- 13:26Speaker 4: gotten to wear this spoon flower piling stick wallpaper because
- 13:29Speaker 4: wallpaper is a huge topic owned and so what we
- 13:32Speaker 4: were doing. What I did a couple of years back
- 13:34Speaker 4: was actually about three years back, was I had noticed
- 13:37Speaker 4: nobody was using wallpaper and dorms. Well, I had this
- 13:40Speaker 4: really cute mirror I wanted to use my daughter's room.
- 13:42Speaker 4: I said, well, the mirror is not gonna look good
- 13:43Speaker 4: against that wall. I was like, I'm going to wallpaper. Well,
- 13:46Speaker 4: at that time, pilling stick wasn't you know, really trending
- 13:49Speaker 4: or wasn't that you know, it's like it is now.
- 13:51Speaker 4: So I put it. I went to Lows and I
- 13:53Speaker 4: got phone boards and I wallpaper phone board panels from Lows,
- 13:58Speaker 4: and then I popped them up in her dorm and all,
- 14:00Speaker 4: I mean, it took off like crazy. So what was
- 14:03Speaker 4: a huge honor because everybody the next year was was
- 14:06Speaker 4: doing that.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Well, did you want a man? Are you selling it?
- 14:09Speaker 3: You should be?
- 14:10Speaker 4: That's what somebody reached out to me. She was like,
- 14:12Speaker 4: you totally need to do this. So I clum. I
- 14:15Speaker 4: was on the dorm Rooms. There's a website who is
- 14:18Speaker 4: so invaluable to anybody moving in a dorm and it's
- 14:20Speaker 4: the Dorm Rooms of Mississippi and beyond, and it is
- 14:24Speaker 4: a wealth wealth of information. Mess ups do this, don't
- 14:30Speaker 4: do this, this work, This didn't work, and it's just
- 14:32Speaker 4: moms and designers just own their collaborating and talking and
- 14:36Speaker 4: so but I remember them reaching out to me saying, Okay,
- 14:40Speaker 4: this is gone viral. We can keep our inbox. How
- 14:43Speaker 4: did you do the walk proper panels? And I was like, well,
- 14:46Speaker 4: you know, you just got a load, so I did
- 14:49Speaker 4: need to do it tutorial. But that does help a lot,
- 14:51Speaker 4: when you know, for the schools that don't allow it,
- 14:54Speaker 4: because there are a lot of schools that don't. I mean,
- 14:55Speaker 4: this is sec we I think I don't know where
- 14:58Speaker 4: I do for the top.
- 15:02Speaker 2: You have to pat that, Yeah, you really really don't.
- 15:05Speaker 3: You have to patn that. What are you doing?
- 15:07Speaker 4: I can barely get on my zoom call.
- 15:09Speaker 3: I don't even know enough.
- 15:10Speaker 1: I know.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Okay, I have two questions for you. Okay, First of all,
- 15:15Speaker 2: like I could see they're being a huge demand for
- 15:18Speaker 2: people wanting to use you. So how long does it
- 15:20Speaker 2: take you to kind of bring one dorm together room together,
- 15:24Speaker 2: assuming like there's two girls in it, And how many
- 15:27Speaker 2: projects can you take on, like over a summer to
- 15:31Speaker 2: get kids ready to move in the fall.
- 15:33Speaker 4: So realistically, that's the issue because we've had such a
- 15:36Speaker 4: I've had so many people this year already trying to
- 15:40Speaker 4: reserve me for twenty twenty seven, which is huge. I'm excited,
- 15:44Speaker 4: don't give me. I'm so excited. Good for you, realistically,
- 15:47Speaker 4: but I want to make sure I can do them
- 15:49Speaker 4: all and do them You do there? Yeah, so and
- 15:51Speaker 4: so that's that's kind of the catch twenty two. It's
- 15:54Speaker 4: it's interesting because there are always hiccups you have when
- 15:57Speaker 4: you have your roommate. You get your roommate, you start
- 15:59Speaker 4: thinking that they reach out to us, they reserve a designer,
- 16:02Speaker 4: and then you start talking about their color scheme. You
- 16:05Speaker 4: can't do anything other than that really until you find
- 16:08Speaker 4: out exactly what dorm room you will be in, because
- 16:11Speaker 4: all of the dorm rooms are different, and so to
- 16:13Speaker 4: buy something that doesn't fit, that may not fit your space,
- 16:16Speaker 4: or what dorm you might get is you can't do
- 16:19Speaker 4: that until almost a couple of months till May. Actually,
- 16:22Speaker 4: so you really only have a couple of months to
- 16:24Speaker 4: buy your furniture, you know, and get all of that.
- 16:28Speaker 4: I guess situated knowing what dorm room. But see even
- 16:31Speaker 4: your dorm rooms. Even though you have the plans, Okay,
- 16:34Speaker 4: I'm in dorm room eight seventeen, these are our plans,
- 16:37Speaker 4: they're still all very different. You're gonna have an outlet here,
- 16:40Speaker 4: you're gonna have there's always unexpected. You're gonna have a
- 16:43Speaker 4: jut out that's on the plan. So you have to
- 16:45Speaker 4: be prepared to be ready for all of those hiccups
- 16:48Speaker 4: because because no matter what dorm room you get in,
- 16:50Speaker 4: you're gonna have a hiccup and you're gonna have some
- 16:52Speaker 4: huge chickups, you know. So I'm gonna say they start planning.
- 16:56Speaker 4: But then the other thing is I've had a lot
- 16:58Speaker 4: of people. I've had four people this year reached out
- 17:00Speaker 4: to me, I'm heading to Oxford again tomorrow. Because one
- 17:04Speaker 4: girl lost her roommate very last minute, like two weeks
- 17:07Speaker 4: before moving. They put her in a different dorm room.
- 17:10Speaker 4: She had bought everything for a certain dorm room if
- 17:12Speaker 4: nothing fits, she had to move to a different dorm room.
- 17:15Speaker 4: I'm heading there tomorrow to try to make her dorm
- 17:17Speaker 4: room work with everything that they've already purchased with the
- 17:20Speaker 4: other roommate who is now at another school last minute.
- 17:23Speaker 4: So it's a lot of problems solving, and there's a
- 17:27Speaker 4: lot of things that are going to change up last minute.
- 17:29Speaker 4: Like my daughter's roommate did the same thing to her,
- 17:31Speaker 4: and she found on Instagram that her daughter that her
- 17:33Speaker 4: roommate wasn't going to move in with her a month
- 17:36Speaker 4: before move in. So you know, you have all that gut.
- 17:40Speaker 4: That gut kind of goes on too that you know,
- 17:42Speaker 4: it's a lot of problems solving, but they do start
- 17:45Speaker 4: like they've already started now for next year. Wow, okay,
- 17:49Speaker 4: the plan ahead.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Wow?
- 17:51Speaker 3: Yeah, at least where do our listeners find you? Oh?
- 17:54Speaker 4: Okay, So I might as well have my Space And
- 17:57Speaker 4: I don't know if y'all remember my Space, So okay, remember,
- 18:00Speaker 4: might as well have that. I have Facebook and Instagram
- 18:03Speaker 4: and we are trying to get on TikTok and so
- 18:06Speaker 4: we're experiencing learning curves. But it's Lisa Dice d y
- 18:10Speaker 4: E s s So I'm on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.
- 18:13Speaker 3: Great. Thank you so much for joining USA.
- 18:17Speaker 4: Thank you so much. I'm so excited.
- 18:19Speaker 2: I love your story. Thank you for sharing your story.
- 18:21Speaker 3: It's amazing. Thank thank you guys.
- 18:23Speaker 4: I appreciate you. Okay, bye bye.
- 18:40Speaker 1: So funny enough, my best friend moved her freshman daughter
- 18:44Speaker 1: in like four days ago or something to Duke and
- 18:50Speaker 1: very very different experience. So yeah, we went to be
- 18:56Speaker 1: you together before I transfer. But I met Sharie and
- 18:59Speaker 1: Call and neither one of us had experienced anything. But
- 19:04Speaker 1: like Joan, you know, it was like what a different time.
- 19:07Speaker 1: But she was describing it to me. First of all,
- 19:10Speaker 1: she said it was maybe the hottest day she'd ever
- 19:13Speaker 1: experienced in her you know, fifty eight years. It was
- 19:18Speaker 1: just awful. And they picked from a lottery. So she
- 19:21Speaker 1: had like the last two hours. You know, you can't
- 19:25Speaker 1: come in until you are your time is allotted, and
- 19:29Speaker 1: they had to be somewhere after that two hours, so
- 19:31Speaker 1: she had two hours. There was no interior designer coming
- 19:35Speaker 1: in to transform the dorm room and it was four
- 19:39Speaker 1: flights up.
- 19:41Speaker 4: Of course, yeah, on that hot day.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Right, So there's like different kinds of dorms that you
- 19:47Speaker 1: are either lucky enough or unlucky enough to get to
- 19:50Speaker 1: get the nicest, newest one. Sometimes you get the oldest,
- 19:53Speaker 1: crappiest one. So she didn't get the nicest newest. So
- 19:59Speaker 1: it was two hours just trying to figure out where
- 20:02Speaker 1: to put her clothes. And she said she had bought
- 20:06Speaker 1: knowing that it was you know, a dorm room, and
- 20:08Speaker 1: that was off on a problem. She bought these plastic
- 20:10Speaker 1: drawers to put together, and but she had to leave.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Poor Jolie. She said they had to leave to go
- 20:16Speaker 1: to an orientation and it was really they encourage you
- 20:20Speaker 1: do not to like let your kid go. There's a
- 20:22Speaker 1: whole ceremony and don't come back kind of thing, and
- 20:26Speaker 1: so in a good way. But anyway, but she you know,
- 20:30Speaker 1: left her with boxes and there was no you know,
- 20:36Speaker 1: wallpapering the walls, and you know, I think she has
- 20:41Speaker 1: apparently got a really nice roommate. But they decided they
- 20:43Speaker 1: didn't want to necessarily coordinate. So just a completely different
- 20:48Speaker 1: experience and a difficult one. I mean, I would think
- 20:52Speaker 1: if I was having an interior designer come in and
- 20:55Speaker 1: do my dorm room, it would be a very cheery
- 21:00Speaker 1: I experience as opposed to and especially as a parent,
- 21:02Speaker 1: right like to be able her in that responsibility over
- 21:05Speaker 1: I did not enjoy decorating my daughter's dorm room. My
- 21:10Speaker 1: son's I told you. He really didn't let me do much.
- 21:12Speaker 1: He had a whole begin for later.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Mom, I got college girls to.
- 21:17Speaker 3: Meet yep, but uh yeah, it wasn't like that.
- 21:21Speaker 2: And we're both moms. So we moved our kids into
- 21:24Speaker 2: dorm rooms and like that. Leaving that first day is
- 21:28Speaker 2: really hard, all right, Yeah, And it's kind of comforting
- 21:32Speaker 2: when you know you left them, Like the bed is made,
- 21:34Speaker 2: it looks really pretty, and you have everything, you bought
- 21:36Speaker 2: all their books for them, you have it all set
- 21:38Speaker 2: up on their desk, like the small things that we did,
- 21:41Speaker 2: because that's only that's the I mean, I'm older than
- 21:42Speaker 2: you know, I'm sixty three, so like this is even
- 21:45Speaker 2: farther back. But like those things made you feel good.
- 21:49Speaker 2: I feel really bad for your friend because I bet
- 21:52Speaker 2: she felt very unsettled leaving her daughter in that room
- 21:55Speaker 2: that was sounds like it was still a little bit
- 21:56Speaker 2: in shambles. And I wonder did she talk about any
- 21:59Speaker 2: of the other rooms that she walked by, rooms that
- 22:01Speaker 2: were over the top decorated and did she.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Feel I don't think she had time to do that
- 22:05Speaker 1: because they were on such time crunch, and so it
- 22:10Speaker 1: was I don't think that she. I mean the room
- 22:14Speaker 1: had like the air conditioner that was sitting in the window,
- 22:15Speaker 1: which she said, you know, thankfully worked. When she moved
- 22:19Speaker 1: my niece in to watch you the air there was
- 22:22Speaker 1: no air conditioning. This is going back that.
- 22:25Speaker 3: I had no easy Okay, there you go.
- 22:27Speaker 2: I went to be your person, Maryland. It's hot here,
- 22:29Speaker 2: it is hot, so but yeah, it was hard. I
- 22:33Speaker 2: wonder if Duke is doing that on purpose. So it
- 22:35Speaker 2: sounds like they all had like two hour time slots
- 22:37Speaker 2: that were really short and they they maybe they're doing
- 22:41Speaker 2: that on purpose because they don't want these over the
- 22:43Speaker 2: top dorm rooms. They want everybody to feel like the
- 22:45Speaker 2: person down the hall doesn't have a nicer space than
- 22:48Speaker 2: they do, like that everybody's more equal.
- 22:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:51Speaker 1: The only reason I don't think so is because I think,
- 22:53Speaker 1: let's say you get the morning slot, you don't get
- 22:56Speaker 1: kicked out nor so then you have the day, you
- 22:59Speaker 1: have the whole right and what I it's not it's
- 23:03Speaker 1: not necessarily it, but you know, I don't know The
- 23:07Speaker 1: only thing I could think is you're very busy at Duke.
- 23:09Speaker 1: It's a hard school. Yeah, sure, so you know, maybe
- 23:13Speaker 1: you're in the library. I don't know, but I only
- 23:15Speaker 1: know Sherry's experience. I don't know if you have a
- 23:17Speaker 1: couple of mothers with kids that went to Duke. Yeah,
- 23:19Speaker 1: I don't know any mothers. And like you, I have
- 23:22Speaker 1: lots of friends that have moved their kids into college,
- 23:26Speaker 1: and I definitely everybody posts the rooms and talk about
- 23:31Speaker 1: it with their kids and what colors and what does
- 23:33Speaker 1: your roommate think and all that, But I don't know
- 23:38Speaker 1: anyone that's done it to this extent.
- 23:41Speaker 2: No, No, these ones were over the top. Yeah, and
- 23:43Speaker 2: I think that's why they're on the show.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 23:45Speaker 1: The first one that Riley did by herself look like
- 23:50Speaker 1: she had a designer there, right.
- 23:52Speaker 2: I mean she's artistic, she's good.
- 23:55Speaker 3: Yeah, God bless her, you know.
- 23:56Speaker 1: I mean, if that's that is, I can look at
- 24:00Speaker 1: that and I think, well, fabulous.
- 24:02Speaker 3: I don't know, and I feel I feel little bad
- 24:04Speaker 3: because I don't want to.
- 24:05Speaker 1: I don't I'm not trying to insult these wonderful women,
- 24:07Speaker 1: these wonderful talented women and what.
- 24:09Speaker 2: They Yeah, incredibly is Yeah, it's beautiful. Yeah, I mean,
- 24:13Speaker 2: and it's the you know, family's choices and their interior designers.
- 24:16Speaker 2: That's what they do for a women, they're being hired.
- 24:18Speaker 2: So they did a great job. I think that maybe
- 24:20Speaker 2: we're questioning, like this whole thought that this over the
- 24:24Speaker 2: top dorm experience now is taking away maybe from other people.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Also it's a lesson that I don't know. I don't
- 24:32Speaker 1: know I sound so judgy, but I don't mean to.
- 24:35Speaker 1: But it's just when she said, you know, it's an
- 24:37Speaker 1: extension of home, I don't know that I want college
- 24:40Speaker 1: to feel or wanted it to feel like necessarily an
- 24:43Speaker 1: extension of home.
- 24:44Speaker 3: I mean, I agree with you.
- 24:45Speaker 1: I think it's okay to miss to be homesick. Both
- 24:47Speaker 1: my kids were. I think it's you know, it's you
- 24:51Speaker 1: grow from it. And it's a lot, a lot of
- 24:55Speaker 1: money for one year, just a lot of it that
- 24:59Speaker 1: I don't I wouldn't necessarily subscribe to.
- 25:02Speaker 3: But again.
- 25:04Speaker 1: It's that maybe's judge and these women did incredible jobs,
- 25:08Speaker 1: So you guys. Lisa shared her information how to find
- 25:10Speaker 1: her Amy Joy's Designs. I'm sure you can find her
- 25:13Speaker 1: on Instagram. Joycee or TikTok or wherever.
- 25:18Speaker 3: She has a lovely website. I looked at it before
- 25:20Speaker 3: we started this. She's very talented.
- 25:22Speaker 2: You should see the home she does so, I mean,
- 25:24Speaker 2: dorm room is, like I think she said, it is
- 25:25Speaker 2: very small part of her business. You should check out
- 25:28Speaker 2: her website. It's pretty incredible, it really is. I have
- 25:30Speaker 2: to say though, for Riley, the one that did her
- 25:32Speaker 2: own dorm room, I like that she sourced things. She
- 25:36Speaker 2: worked hard to not spend a lot of money. You know,
- 25:38Speaker 2: she wasn't an interior designer doing this. She did this
- 25:40Speaker 2: on her own and I think that actually that was
- 25:43Speaker 2: kind of a good lesson. I think she maybe learned
- 25:45Speaker 2: something from this experience.
- 25:46Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I do too. Very talented young lady. Yeah.
- 25:51Speaker 2: That's it for this episode of Dirty Rush. Thank you
