- 0:00Speaker 1: The regular season is done and the Sheffield Shield Final
- 0:03Speaker 1: is sets. Welcome to Domesticated. I'm justin Edwards. Fox cricket
- 0:07Speaker 1: riter Nick Savage is alongside me.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Nick.
- 0:09Speaker 1: We got the final we probably thought we were going
- 0:11Speaker 1: to get. It'll be the best team of the season.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Victoria against the reigning champions South Australia.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Yeah, Victoria where dominant.
- 0:18Speaker 3: They secured that home final several weeks ago, many rounds
- 0:21Speaker 3: ago actually, and yes, South Australia, very similar squad to
- 0:25Speaker 3: last year and yeah, they've just held it together. Wouldn't
- 0:28Speaker 3: far from a perfect season for them when they got
- 0:30Speaker 3: about the four wins in the end, but they scraped
- 0:32Speaker 3: through a courtesy of bonus points in this last round.
- 0:35Speaker 3: I think they found out halfway through Day two they've
- 0:37Speaker 3: got it done. So yeah, an exciting final. We got
- 0:40Speaker 3: that preview in round ten down at Junction Ovle.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it's an interesting sort of dynamic that you have
- 0:44Speaker 1: the same two teams playing each other in the last
- 0:46Speaker 1: round and we'll play each other again in the final.
- 0:49Speaker 1: We'll touch more on the Shield Final later on. The
- 0:51Speaker 1: biggest story of the Shield round for me was Cameron Green.
- 0:54Speaker 1: We'll start with what he did on the field first
- 0:56Speaker 1: one hundred and thirty five and a return to form
- 0:59Speaker 1: after what was a really really lean summer.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Really important.
- 1:02Speaker 3: He hadn't gotten a one hundred in any format since
- 1:05Speaker 3: about May last year. It had been a really worrying summer. Obviously,
- 1:08Speaker 3: he had got a fifty in the ashes, went to
- 1:10Speaker 3: the T twenty World Cup and struggled quite a bit there,
- 1:13Speaker 3: and so this will do his confidence a lot of
- 1:14Speaker 3: goods about to head to India for the IPL. He
- 1:17Speaker 3: might be on a plane today. In fact, he's a
- 1:19Speaker 3: four million dollar player there and this one hundred will
- 1:22Speaker 3: just give him a little bit of a boost heading
- 1:23Speaker 3: into the winter because Australia needs him performing.
- 1:26Speaker 2: They need him before me.
- 1:27Speaker 3: He could take that number five or six spot next
- 1:30Speaker 3: summer in a massive summer for Australia and this will
- 1:33Speaker 3: just hopefully give them that little boost that's needed.
- 1:35Speaker 1: It feels again like we've seen this a lot. A
- 1:38Speaker 1: lot of the talkover summer was oh, he needs to
- 1:40Speaker 1: go back to shield cricket, back to shield cricket.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Well, guess what he.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Does every time he gets back to shield cricket. He
- 1:44Speaker 1: does this. He averages like well over fifty in Sheffield
- 1:48Speaker 1: Shield cricket and he gets another hundred. Didn't play much
- 1:52Speaker 1: shield cricket at all, doesn't play very much first class
- 1:54Speaker 1: cricket because he always playing with Australia. When he's not
- 1:56Speaker 1: playing with even in redwell cricket, he's playing whpeall cricket
- 1:59Speaker 1: for Australia or IPL. But this is just what he
- 2:02Speaker 1: does when he goes back to this level. The challenge
- 2:04Speaker 1: for him now is to It's not that he hasn't
- 2:06Speaker 1: done this at Test level. He's got one hundred India,
- 2:09Speaker 1: got one hundred against that forty two bo one hundred
- 2:12Speaker 1: against South Africa and white bulk crek Het. He just
- 2:15Speaker 1: needs to do it more consistently at the international level.
- 2:18Speaker 3: We has really underperformed at Test level. He hasn't got
- 2:21Speaker 3: a Test one hundred in Australia yet. And considering he
- 2:23Speaker 3: made his debut six years ago. Now he's no longer
- 2:26Speaker 3: just the young spring chicken, the future prospect in the
- 2:29Speaker 3: national team. He's in that first choice eleven he has
- 2:31Speaker 3: been for a long time.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Now.
- 2:33Speaker 3: He needs to start actually producing some match winning performances
- 2:36Speaker 3: for Australia. He did so in tril Anka a few
- 2:38Speaker 3: years ago. He did so in New Zealand in early
- 2:40Speaker 3: twenty twenty four. But now we just need some consistency
- 2:43Speaker 3: from it and this yield hundred just shows he's to
- 2:46Speaker 3: one of the best players in Australia. Here is a
- 2:47Speaker 3: class above the kind of domestic players that we've seen.
- 2:51Speaker 3: As you said, it's just converting it into the national stage.
- 2:54Speaker 1: And then there was what happens off the fields with
- 2:57Speaker 1: a little bit of a minor spat with journalist Tom
- 3:00Speaker 1: Decent from the Sydney Morning Herald who was there, and
- 3:02Speaker 1: there was a miscommunication over whether Green was going to
- 3:06Speaker 1: do a press conference and what it was going to
- 3:07Speaker 1: look like. The key point was Green SAIDs on his
- 3:12Speaker 1: way out, why are you about to get now that
- 3:15Speaker 1: point Green clearly has a bit going on, didn't want
- 3:18Speaker 1: to be doing that the press conference. It points to
- 3:23Speaker 1: perhaps he's a little frazzles. He's a little clearly the
- 3:28Speaker 1: lean summer has got to him. And whether that's just
- 3:31Speaker 1: on field or you know, he's got a lot of criticism.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Really for the first time in his career, he's been
- 3:36Speaker 1: criticized by media, by former players in the media and
- 3:40Speaker 1: by a lot of fans. There's been a lot of
- 3:43Speaker 1: it reminds me of when Mitch Marsh went through this
- 3:46Speaker 1: two years ago, and I don't think it's I think
- 3:49Speaker 1: it's important. They are the same type of player. I
- 3:52Speaker 1: think in this country we have very high expectations of
- 3:56Speaker 1: all rounders, which is not placed on cricketers of the countries.
- 4:01Speaker 1: But that's just a little spat with the geno. It's
- 4:04Speaker 1: just not quite what he needs and it points to
- 4:06Speaker 1: him maybe not everything is going so good and his
- 4:10Speaker 1: rough form has got to him.
- 4:12Speaker 3: It was very telling reading that report from Tom Decent.
- 4:15Speaker 3: It really provided a glimpse at where Karen Green's at
- 4:18Speaker 3: and as you said, here's frazzled, here's low on confidence.
- 4:20Speaker 3: The summer has gotten to him, and I think it is.
- 4:23Speaker 3: It's worrying that he went into that with the understanding that, oh,
- 4:26Speaker 3: they told Tom Deson only talk about this shield game
- 4:29Speaker 3: going on, can't talk about form. As soon as the
- 4:31Speaker 3: question came out, but as summer Camen Green refused to
- 4:34Speaker 3: answer the question. And you just can't go through a
- 4:37Speaker 3: professional career like that. Like the question that Tom Deson
- 4:39Speaker 3: asked was pretty standard, It was fairly regulation with what
- 4:42Speaker 3: journalists would expect, and Kevin Green can just say no,
- 4:46Speaker 3: of course, I was far my best this summer.
- 4:48Speaker 2: I know I can.
- 4:48Speaker 3: He had the opportunity to talk about improvements he's made
- 4:51Speaker 3: to his mental side of the game, any technical deficiencies
- 4:54Speaker 3: that he's resolved, He had that opportunity. Instead, he made
- 4:57Speaker 3: a bigger story out of it than it really should
- 4:59Speaker 3: have been.
- 5:00Speaker 2: And Cameron, he's still in his career.
- 5:02Speaker 3: He's only twenty six, twenty seven, He's still got a
- 5:04Speaker 3: lot of international cricket ahead of him. But he has
- 5:06Speaker 3: to be better at dealing with scrutiny because that will
- 5:09Speaker 3: come at every stage of his career.
- 5:10Speaker 2: It's inevitable.
- 5:11Speaker 1: And you sort of can't really go and maybe this
- 5:14Speaker 1: is not on Green and on the people around him.
- 5:16Speaker 1: You can't go to a press conference only being asked
- 5:19Speaker 1: about certain things, right, That doesn't work in any part,
- 5:23Speaker 1: whether it's politics or CEOs or sports people. And he's
- 5:26Speaker 1: not going to he wasn't going to get grilled. But yeah,
- 5:29Speaker 1: it's just it was a sort of weird exchange and
- 5:33Speaker 1: my big take was really out of character. You probably
- 5:37Speaker 1: dealt with Camic Green more than I have, but he's
- 5:39Speaker 1: the most gentle, lovely, like never wants to make a
- 5:42Speaker 1: story or yeah, just it seemed really out of.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Character the gentle giant, he's the BFG of Australian cricket.
- 5:48Speaker 2: It was very out of character. It was surprising to
- 5:49Speaker 2: read that a lot.
- 5:51Speaker 3: I think, if anything, just shows that this summer has
- 5:53Speaker 3: taken it as toll on him.
- 5:55Speaker 2: He goes to the IPL. Now there isn't a lot
- 5:57Speaker 2: of media has to deal with over there.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Mostly it's going to be social media clips for the
- 6:02Speaker 3: Twitter of his side there. So he gets a couple
- 6:05Speaker 3: of months to hopefully get some runs under his belt,
- 6:07Speaker 3: have a bit of fun hopefully over the IPL, and
- 6:10Speaker 3: then he'll have a bit of a hopefully winter break,
- 6:12Speaker 3: and then come back refreshed for the next summer. I
- 6:15Speaker 3: know he's had a rough summer, but he's going to
- 6:16Speaker 3: be in that team I'm pretty sure, at least in
- 6:18Speaker 3: the squad when we get to August against Bangladesh and yeah,
- 6:22Speaker 3: hopefully IPL was a turning point for him.
- 6:24Speaker 1: So as the Cameron Green drama in this game. This
- 6:26Speaker 1: New southwal was Western Australia game, which was a draw.
- 6:28Speaker 1: By the way, it was a thrilling drawer. Came down
- 6:30Speaker 1: to the last ball. WA with nine down, managed to
- 6:33Speaker 1: block out the draw. The other drama, which was broken
- 6:36Speaker 1: exclusively by you on the Fox Sports website, was involving
- 6:40Speaker 1: Greg Shippard, a trophy and the incoming New South Wales
- 6:43Speaker 1: coach Brad Hadden.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Tell us what happened, well, I think we have to
- 6:47Speaker 3: maybe go back to January when Greg Shippard was told
- 6:50Speaker 3: with eighteen months still in his contract, thank you, we
- 6:52Speaker 3: will be done with us at the end of this season.
- 6:55Speaker 2: He obviously was really disappointed.
- 6:56Speaker 3: He said that at the time he was very disappointed
- 6:58Speaker 3: with that decision and as part out of that announcement,
- 7:01Speaker 3: the cricket New South Wales chief legium On said the
- 7:04Speaker 3: reason for this is wren to help New Southwell start
- 7:06Speaker 3: winning titles and so, of course, six weeks later New
- 7:10Speaker 3: South Wales win the One Day Cup Final in a
- 7:12Speaker 3: rain affected final down in Hobart. Greg Shippard he's lifting
- 7:16Speaker 3: the trophy on the podium and it's in his office.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Come Monday when his replacement, as it turned out to be,
- 7:23Speaker 3: Brad Hadden comes in for his final interview, his final
- 7:26Speaker 3: presentation to the New South Wales board. Apparently, Greg Shippard
- 7:30Speaker 3: grabbed the trophy from his office and on multiple occasions
- 7:33Speaker 3: walked past the room holding the trophy off, essentially parading
- 7:36Speaker 3: in front of the board. It was very tongue in cheek.
- 7:38Speaker 3: Apparently it was a bit of a laugh. It took
- 7:40Speaker 3: everyone by surprise. There were certainly some shocked faces, but
- 7:43Speaker 3: it wasn't a very malicious act.
- 7:45Speaker 2: It was meant to be a bit of a laugh.
- 7:47Speaker 3: And then Shippy did also take that into the New
- 7:49Speaker 3: Southwell Sheds ahead of his final day that fourth day
- 7:52Speaker 3: of the Shield matching against West Austraia.
- 7:54Speaker 2: It almost works. They almost took seven.
- 7:56Speaker 3: They took seven wickets in that final session to almost
- 7:58Speaker 3: get an unlikely win. So the trophy did act. There's
- 8:00Speaker 3: a bit of inspiration in the end. But yeah, shit
- 8:03Speaker 3: is now done with New South Wales. All his assistant
- 8:04Speaker 3: coaches have also been released and Brad Hadden will take
- 8:07Speaker 3: over in June when he finishes over in the IPL.
- 8:10Speaker 3: And really exciting signing. I think he spoke really well
- 8:13Speaker 3: at his press conference yesterday. Cricket Central and yeah, a
- 8:16Speaker 3: new chapter for cricket New South Wales.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I love it from Shippard. It's just it's so funny
- 8:22Speaker 1: because he's been around Australian cricket, not just for years,
- 8:25Speaker 1: but for decades. Right, and he's won a lot of
- 8:28Speaker 1: trophies with the Sydney Six's as well. I just think
- 8:31Speaker 1: it's so funny just walking past that interview holding the trophy.
- 8:34Speaker 1: I think it's great. Brad Haddon's going to be the
- 8:36Speaker 1: new New South Wales coach. New south Wales for maybe
- 8:40Speaker 1: a century, has been the juggernaut of Australian cricket. Has
- 8:44Speaker 1: not been the case for the last five years. That's
- 8:47Speaker 1: going to be Brad Hadden's big challenges. You know, the
- 8:50Speaker 1: old joke was once you get your baggy blue, baggy blue,
- 8:52Speaker 1: you get your baggy green in the brown paper bag.
- 8:55Speaker 1: That has not been true in the last five to
- 8:57Speaker 1: ten years. Who was the last player that New South
- 8:59Speaker 1: Wales but use that was an international regular?
- 9:01Speaker 3: Well there was well constas was most recent test debt
- 9:05Speaker 3: beyond and obviously they played five games. I think before
- 9:08Speaker 3: that Curtis Patterson who was dropped after two Tests, and
- 9:11Speaker 3: before that we have to go back to Nick Madenson
- 9:13Speaker 3: who only played a couple of games. You do look
- 9:15Speaker 3: at the Australian side, Steve Smith, Pat Cummins.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Mitch Stugg. The New South Wales progression is still there.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Those players are still dominating that long time.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Though since they were like they all came in, we're
- 9:27Speaker 1: talking the early twenty tenths, it's ten to fifteen years ago.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Now that those guys debute, it's a strong New South
- 9:35Speaker 1: Wales tends to mean a strong Australia. New South Wales
- 9:39Speaker 1: is not that strong at the moment and the New
- 9:41Speaker 1: South Wales cores that are still in the Australian side
- 9:43Speaker 1: or all the wrong side of thirty New South Wales
- 9:46Speaker 1: will need to be finding some players.
- 9:48Speaker 3: And that's exactly what Brad Hadden spoke about in his
- 9:49Speaker 3: press conference. He said he was under no illusions that
- 9:52Speaker 3: I need to produce Australian cricketers and he looks at
- 9:55Speaker 3: this squad and he sees a lot of exciting young players.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Sam Constace is the obvious one, but Jack Edwards the captain.
- 10:01Speaker 2: He's still early in his career.
- 10:02Speaker 3: He's had a taste of international cricket now, but he's
- 10:05Speaker 3: certainly a prospect for future honors in the national side.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Lockie Shaw, Joel Davies.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Ollie Davies who's fallen out of favor in the Blues side,
- 10:13Speaker 3: but still an exciting player. There are a lot of
- 10:15Speaker 3: young kids in this squad who have potential to become,
- 10:18Speaker 3: as Hadden puts it, generational talent. There are the makings
- 10:22Speaker 3: there of that next generation. His challenge now is diving
- 10:26Speaker 3: straight into it in August September when the players return,
- 10:29Speaker 3: is going to be making sure that they can not
- 10:31Speaker 3: only just offer a glimpse of excellence, but be consistent
- 10:33Speaker 3: performers and become Australian players and Australian superstars. And so
- 10:37Speaker 3: it's a big challenge ahead for Brad Hadden and his team.
- 10:39Speaker 1: And I liked he's quite about providing Australian players. We
- 10:42Speaker 1: all know that Shield cricket. There is a dual purpose
- 10:45Speaker 1: for Shield cricket. Yes, of course winning the games, winning
- 10:48Speaker 1: the title is important. Also important is developing those players
- 10:51Speaker 1: for Australian cricket. There's the reason Shield cricket exists. That's
- 10:54Speaker 1: the reason Shield players are paid pretty well when there's
- 10:58Speaker 1: six people watching in the stands is because it exists
- 11:01Speaker 1: to make a good test team. One of those players
- 11:03Speaker 1: that will be a big focus for Brad Hadden is
- 11:05Speaker 1: Sam Constas funny little period since the big batch for
- 11:09Speaker 1: Sam concerts, he's been out for eight consecutive scores between
- 11:13Speaker 1: twenty seven and forty four. Now that is better than
- 11:16Speaker 1: having eight consecutive scores a fewer than ten. But he's
- 11:20Speaker 1: getting starts and just not being able to go on
- 11:22Speaker 1: with it. At the moment.
- 11:23Speaker 3: He's doing the hard part as an open eye. It's
- 11:25Speaker 3: surviving that new ball spell. And he's done that every
- 11:29Speaker 3: single opportunity since Christmas. He has gotten past the tough part.
- 11:33Speaker 3: His challenge now is just converting. Is just going on
- 11:35Speaker 3: with it once the ball is lost at shine, once
- 11:37Speaker 3: a little bit for tegue comes into the ballers, it's
- 11:39Speaker 3: just going on to making those big scores, those match
- 11:41Speaker 3: winning performances.
- 11:43Speaker 2: He's contributing.
- 11:44Speaker 3: I think he actually finished the season as the Blues
- 11:46Speaker 3: leading run scorer, even though by his own standards it
- 11:48Speaker 3: would be a pretty underwhelming summer leading run scorer. But
- 11:51Speaker 3: he just needs to become a match winner. Now, you
- 11:54Speaker 3: don't want to put on one player, but the opener
- 11:56Speaker 3: is not converting. Is a big reason the Blues didn't
- 11:58Speaker 3: make it into that top two on the shield standings.
- 12:00Speaker 3: The bowlers, for the most part, were doing their job.
- 12:02Speaker 3: We've spoken before about how there's a bat in crisis
- 12:04Speaker 3: in Australia. They're just need to start converting those twenties, thirties,
- 12:08Speaker 3: forties into eighties and hundreds, because that's how you win
- 12:11Speaker 3: Shield games.
- 12:11Speaker 2: First innings runs are so important.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Constance hasn't really done enough to put himself back. In
- 12:17Speaker 1: a Test conversation, the incumbent Jake Weatherwold got sixty two
- 12:22Speaker 1: against Queensland after ninety five against New South Wales a
- 12:25Speaker 1: little earlier. He's actually ended the Shield season with an
- 12:28Speaker 1: average of forty, so that's not too bad for you.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Has he done enough to hold his Test place?
- 12:34Speaker 3: I don't think his Test career is over, but in
- 12:37Speaker 3: my mind, if I had to put money on at
- 12:39Speaker 3: this stage, I think Matt Renshaw is probably going to
- 12:41Speaker 3: take that opening role purely because he has performed really
- 12:44Speaker 3: well throughout the summer across all three formats.
- 12:47Speaker 2: He was the only player this summer to.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Score three Shield hundreds, and that's despite missing a lot
- 12:52Speaker 3: of Shield cricket. Yes, Renshaw tape it off towards the
- 12:54Speaker 3: end of the season. He got a lot of low
- 12:56Speaker 3: scores since returning from the sub Continent. But my gut
- 12:59Speaker 3: feels that the national selectors are really going to back
- 13:01Speaker 3: Renshall heading to next summer. He's performed well across all
- 13:05Speaker 3: three formats, and in my mind he's most likely to
- 13:08Speaker 3: take that opening spot. There is the potential of Man's
- 13:12Speaker 3: Labouchet missing out, wren Share going at three with weather
- 13:14Speaker 3: aored opening.
- 13:15Speaker 2: I don't love that configuration necessarily.
- 13:17Speaker 3: I think Labashee's experience will be really important next summer.
- 13:20Speaker 2: But in my mind, whether All's.
- 13:22Speaker 3: Ash is just going to come back to hoard and
- 13:23Speaker 3: unfortunately he did struggle, especially towards the back end of
- 13:26Speaker 3: that ashes. If he can sort out that issue that
- 13:28Speaker 3: we spoke about a few weeks ago, with being his
- 13:31Speaker 3: front had been blown off time and time again, he could.
- 13:35Speaker 3: It just really comes down to being more consistent, unfortunately,
- 13:38Speaker 3: and he hasn't got a hundreds.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Did he get a hundred this summer?
- 13:41Speaker 3: Even I don't think he did, so it's hard to
- 13:44Speaker 3: say you're going to get dropped off of five tests,
- 13:47Speaker 3: But with rern Shall breeding on his neck, I think
- 13:48Speaker 3: it's a strong possibility.
- 13:49Speaker 1: The only thing that would count in Weatherorld's favor is
- 13:53Speaker 1: everybody else is really especially this back half of the
- 13:56Speaker 1: shoe of summer. No one's stood up to grab that position.
- 14:00Speaker 1: You know, we talked about how few hundreds there have
- 14:02Speaker 1: been and camicc Green was the only one to score
- 14:04Speaker 1: one hundred this round. So that's seven centuries in the
- 14:08Speaker 1: entire Shield since Christmas, and there's been four rounds, so
- 14:12Speaker 1: that's twelve matches potentially forty eight innings and there's been
- 14:15Speaker 1: seven hundreds, so it's I don't quite think weather all
- 14:20Speaker 1: it is the favorite to keep his place, but there
- 14:25Speaker 1: hasn't been someone that's gone and grabbed it. I remember
- 14:27Speaker 1: that summer where Cameron Bancroft just went and got nearly
- 14:30Speaker 1: a thousand runs. It was like, look he was picking.
- 14:32Speaker 1: It's not that easy at the moment. Malus Slapushtain's the
- 14:35Speaker 1: other one that struggled since Christmas as an incumbent in
- 14:40Speaker 1: the Australian Test team scores of ten forty one eight
- 14:43Speaker 1: to zero thirteen twenty twenty nine. Those are not the
- 14:47Speaker 1: scores of an Australian number three. Going back to Shield cricket,
- 14:51Speaker 1: it feels like he's stuck in that spot that he
- 14:54Speaker 1: was last summer and when he got dropped in the
- 14:57Speaker 1: West Indies, came back and started this so well one
- 15:00Speaker 1: hundred after a hundred in Shield. He did get one
- 15:02Speaker 1: hundred in that period in the One Day Cup. I
- 15:05Speaker 1: wonder how much selectors take into account fifty over form
- 15:09Speaker 1: in test conversations, certainly more than T twenty four, it's
- 15:12Speaker 1: closer to that. But it's just it's not quite clicking
- 15:17Speaker 1: at the moment for Labershane, and it feels like if
- 15:20Speaker 1: they select him, which I think they probably will, he'll
- 15:23Speaker 1: be again being selected on his potential and what he's
- 15:27Speaker 1: done in the past rather than what's happening right now.
- 15:31Speaker 2: He's been teasing the national selector.
- 15:32Speaker 3: It's been four years since he's got a Test one hundred,
- 15:34Speaker 3: which for a number three is just not good enough for.
- 15:37Speaker 1: A guy with what's he got eleven test centuries.
- 15:39Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just even so far from his best and
- 15:42Speaker 3: it's hilarious that he gets roped from the test side.
- 15:44Speaker 3: How that West in his tour and then gets back
- 15:46Speaker 3: to Queensland for the domestic summer and in September October
- 15:50Speaker 3: is unstoppable. He's peeling off runs for fun. He's so
- 15:52Speaker 3: far ahead of everyone he has to be picked for
- 15:54Speaker 3: the Ashes like it doesn't even become a debate at
- 15:57Speaker 3: that stage. He's so strong, and then the Ashes and
- 15:59Speaker 3: he starts struggling again. He once again, he get's one
- 16:02Speaker 3: fifty early in the season and then just struggles and
- 16:04Speaker 3: tapers off as the summer progressive, and now towards the
- 16:07Speaker 3: end of the season he's he's just so far from.
- 16:10Speaker 2: His best at the moment. And yeah, it is exactly
- 16:13Speaker 2: he has said.
- 16:14Speaker 3: He's been picked on promise, He's been picked on what
- 16:16Speaker 3: he did years ago rather than what he's producing now.
- 16:19Speaker 3: I do feel like his spot will be safe because
- 16:22Speaker 3: the leading people who could take a spot are Curtis Patterson,
- 16:26Speaker 3: Peter Hanskin, Matt Renshaw. Do I see the National sectors
- 16:30Speaker 3: going back to one of those guys over Labershane, probably
- 16:33Speaker 3: not at this stage as superb they have been this summer.
- 16:36Speaker 3: The consistency hasn't been there from Hanskim or Patterson. They're
- 16:39Speaker 3: both averaging mid thirties. I think in the shield which
- 16:42Speaker 3: is which is all the batsman exactly exactly that if
- 16:45Speaker 3: someone had stepped up and pushed up to high forties
- 16:47Speaker 3: early fifties, that would have been really caught the National
- 16:50Speaker 3: selector's attention. But yeah, the lack of consistency from Labashane
- 16:53Speaker 3: is a problem. I think Luckily for him, there's now
- 16:56Speaker 3: with exception of the Shield Final. There's no cricket until August.
- 17:00Speaker 3: He'll probably will play against Bangladesh. Is that a chance
- 17:03Speaker 3: for him to hopefully get some big runs under his
- 17:06Speaker 3: soth Africa? Well, Australian cricket fans will certainly hope. So.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Certainly on paper the Bangladesh side looks to be a
- 17:13Speaker 1: weaker opponent than your Shield side probably, so there is
- 17:16Speaker 1: an opportunity for those guys to rack up runs. It's
- 17:19Speaker 1: an opportunity for those that are selected to rack up runs.
- 17:21Speaker 1: And he really needed to do the work to get there.
- 17:23Speaker 1: And whether those guys have done that, we wait and
- 17:26Speaker 1: see the Shield Final coming up. I love the Shield Final.
- 17:29Speaker 1: I feel it's one of the great days on the
- 17:32Speaker 1: great sort of weeks on the Australian sporting calendar. Those
- 17:35Speaker 1: scenes last year of overrun running on the ground at
- 17:38Speaker 1: South Australia, that was awesome and we're going to get
- 17:42Speaker 1: another one this time in Victoria. Looks like Brendan Doggett
- 17:45Speaker 1: is not going to play. If you've got a read
- 17:47Speaker 1: on that he's not going to be.
- 17:48Speaker 2: It seems unlikely. It seems very unlikely.
- 17:50Speaker 3: I mean for a hamstrings here to recover within a
- 17:52Speaker 3: month is it would be close to miraculous and I
- 17:55Speaker 3: just think they're going to risk him. He might be
- 17:57Speaker 3: able to bowl, but can he play a five day
- 17:59Speaker 3: game and twenty over spells in it? Inning's probably not
- 18:02Speaker 3: at this stage, but we'll wait and see. There's still
- 18:04Speaker 3: few days to go until that final, but it seems
- 18:06Speaker 3: y unlikely. South Strala still have plenty of bowling stocks
- 18:09Speaker 3: in there like it is a big miss. I think
- 18:11Speaker 3: he was one of the leading wikitakers in last year's final,
- 18:14Speaker 3: but we've got a lot of debt with in that squad,
- 18:15Speaker 3: so it shouldn't be a problem for the red Backs.
- 18:17Speaker 1: It's not Victoria or going to be without one of
- 18:19Speaker 1: their leading wikitakers as well, but purely through their own
- 18:22Speaker 1: choice because they've got to fit Fergus O'Neil back in.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Scott Bowland's got to play well. Sutherland is the captain,
- 18:28Speaker 1: so he's going to play. Todd Murphy's going to play,
- 18:31Speaker 1: so it looks like either Sam Elliott or Mitch Perry
- 18:33Speaker 1: are gonna mix when they've been two of the best
- 18:36Speaker 1: bowlers in Shield cricket so far this year. Just shows
- 18:39Speaker 1: the embarrassment of riches that Victoria have at the moment
- 18:43Speaker 1: in batting and bowling, which it reminds you of New
- 18:46Speaker 1: South Wales fifteen years ago.
- 18:49Speaker 2: There, yeah, that's going to be really tough call.
- 18:51Speaker 3: It's interesting that with Fergus O'Neil his batting has come
- 18:54Speaker 3: leaps and bounds. He's averaging, oh, mid thirties. I think
- 18:58Speaker 3: this summer with the bat which is more than handy.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Could he bet at seven?
- 19:01Speaker 3: Could you have Sutherland and him as an all round
- 19:03Speaker 3: us to pick in the extra bowler? Then I feel
- 19:05Speaker 3: like a shorter batter. It's difficult for Victoria. There's gonna
- 19:08Speaker 3: be some tough calls. My gut feels like Perry's might
- 19:11Speaker 3: miss out. That's for no reason other than really really
- 19:14Speaker 3: bad luck. Is a way to fit them all in?
- 19:17Speaker 3: Probably not, because there's so many strong batters in this
- 19:19Speaker 3: Victorian side as well, like the experience you've got with
- 19:22Speaker 3: Peter Hansman, Marcus Harris, the fresh faces in Campbell kell Away.
- 19:26Speaker 3: It's gonna be really difficult to fit all even in.
- 19:28Speaker 3: But it's a cliche, but it's a good problem to
- 19:31Speaker 3: have for Chris Rodgers and his team.
- 19:33Speaker 1: The Shield Final for forever and a day has been
- 19:37Speaker 1: your path to the Australian Test team. If you put
- 19:41Speaker 1: a big hundred up, especially a guy like Campbell kell
- 19:44Speaker 1: Away or Nathan McSweeney, even Sam Harper, who's spoken about
- 19:48Speaker 1: had such a good summer, if they put a big
- 19:50Speaker 1: one fifty up in a Shield final. There have been
- 19:53Speaker 1: countless examples of people performing in Shield finals. Basically get
- 19:57Speaker 1: them baggy greens. When Pat Cummins got with me the
- 20:00Speaker 1: match in the Shield Final and made a Test debut
- 20:02Speaker 1: at eighteen six months later, I think Phil Hugh's got
- 20:05Speaker 1: to be one hundred in the Shield Final and that
- 20:06Speaker 1: got him in the Test team. I think there's a
- 20:08Speaker 1: real opportunity for those guys who are not. It wouldn't
- 20:11Speaker 1: be out of nowhere for like a McSweeney or a Kellaway.
- 20:13Speaker 1: They're in the conversations anyway. McSweeney of course played Test cricket.
- 20:17Speaker 1: The Shield Final is your best opportunity. That's when that's
- 20:22Speaker 1: when most people are just normal fans are watching Shield cricket.
- 20:27Speaker 1: It's when the selectors will be watching. It's the highest
- 20:29Speaker 1: pressure first class game that you can play in Australia.
- 20:33Speaker 1: I think there's a chance that somebody like that if
- 20:36Speaker 1: they play a match winning knock, those knocks are worth
- 20:39Speaker 1: double and I think that someone could play themselves into
- 20:43Speaker 1: the Test team next week.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Well, it was dog it last year.
- 20:45Speaker 3: I think twok ten wickets in that final and got
- 20:47Speaker 3: his Test selection partly from that. You know exactly right,
- 20:51Speaker 3: who's going to win this match for the state. Who's
- 20:53Speaker 3: going to step up and actually produce the performance that
- 20:55Speaker 3: gets them that trophy? Whoever does that absolutely puts himself
- 20:59Speaker 3: in the national frame.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Cabal Kellawe.
- 21:00Speaker 3: He's so hot and cold with the bat, but if
- 21:02Speaker 3: he gets a match winning hundred in the final, he'll
- 21:05Speaker 3: be right. In a conversation heading into August, Todd Murphy,
- 21:08Speaker 3: we saw him miss out in the Sydney Test controversially
- 21:10Speaker 3: when it really should have been his selection. If he
- 21:12Speaker 3: can now produce a match winning performance in a Shield final,
- 21:16Speaker 3: that'll go a long way making sure that he is
- 21:18Speaker 3: not only lines understudy his future understudy, but the nationalt
- 21:22Speaker 3: just trust him to pick him when they need a
- 21:24Speaker 3: win if it's too all in India or whatever was
- 21:27Speaker 3: situation it might be.
- 21:29Speaker 2: If you can perform in a Shield final goes a
- 21:30Speaker 2: long way, absolutely right.
- 21:32Speaker 1: And the funny little dynamic that we spoke about about
- 21:34Speaker 1: the teams playing the round before that match, the last
- 21:39Speaker 1: round match was I'll say it was ruined by Queensland's
- 21:43Speaker 1: getting bowled out on that first day and collapsing. So
- 21:46Speaker 1: that meant that even if Queensland had a beaten Tasmania,
- 21:48Speaker 1: they still couldn't make the final. And then it just
- 21:51Speaker 1: felt like South Australian Victoria would going through the motions.
- 21:54Speaker 1: Neither wanted to really throw a punch because next week
- 21:58Speaker 1: is what's more important. It's sort of felt like the
- 22:01Speaker 1: story that Shane Warn used to tell about how Alan
- 22:03Speaker 1: Border didn't let him bowl anything other than leg breaks
- 22:06Speaker 1: in that tool match before the ninety three ashes and
- 22:08Speaker 1: Graham Hick hit hing for thirteen sixes or whatever because
- 22:11Speaker 1: all he was bowling was leg breaks. That's what it
- 22:13Speaker 1: felt like that South Australia Victoria game of like, ah,
- 22:15Speaker 1: let's just we'll just play this one out, we'll focus
- 22:19Speaker 1: on next week.
- 22:19Speaker 3: It felt like it was a Foe Godden conclusion after
- 22:22Speaker 3: day two what was going to go down. Hopefully both
- 22:25Speaker 3: teams got something out of it, like yes, they were
- 22:27Speaker 3: probably going through the motions a bit, but hopefully it
- 22:30Speaker 3: did help them prepare for the final in some capacity.
- 22:32Speaker 3: But really it's going to come down to day one
- 22:34Speaker 3: on the I think it's the twenty sixth the game start.
- 22:36Speaker 3: It's all going to come down to that, and yeah,
- 22:38Speaker 3: five day game. I think it does come down to
- 22:41Speaker 3: the first innings points. If there is a draw, which
- 22:43Speaker 3: fingers cross.
- 22:44Speaker 2: As unlikely, just rain please stay away.
- 22:47Speaker 3: Yes, there'll be a lot of tension on foota down
- 22:49Speaker 3: there in Victoria, but hopefully the fans turn up because yeah,
- 22:52Speaker 3: as you said, the atmosphere last year Adelaide was really
- 22:54Speaker 3: really special and be cool.
- 22:55Speaker 2: If the Melbourne fans could replicate.
- 22:57Speaker 1: That, I'm sure they will. It's Victoria and South Australia
- 23:00Speaker 1: the Sheffield Shield Final. It starts Thursday, the twenty sixth
- 23:02Speaker 1: of the March. Every ball live on Fox Sports and
- 23:06Speaker 1: k
