- 0:00Speaker 1: NATO leaders have adopted a joint declaration as their summit
- 0:04Speaker 1: wrapped in Akara, affirming a unified stance on several issues,
- 0:07Speaker 1: including support for Ukraine. That's surprisingly amicable and followed a
- 0:12Speaker 1: more turbulent beginning when US President Donald Trump complained about
- 0:16Speaker 1: a lack of support from his European allies for his
- 0:19Speaker 1: war in Iran.
- 0:20Speaker 2: The Alliance came to Ankara with one overriding objective to
- 0:24Speaker 2: demonstrate unity at the time of growing global tensions, and
- 0:29Speaker 2: it looks like that's exactly what they did.
- 0:32Speaker 3: I just want to say there was tremendous love in
- 0:34Speaker 3: that room. If there's one word that comes.
- 0:37Speaker 4: Out of today as unification, I've never seen anything like it.
- 0:41Speaker 2: But that isn't how things started. The beginning of the
- 0:44Speaker 2: summit was quickly overshadowed by concerns over deepening fractures in
- 0:49Speaker 2: the alliance, highlighted by the US President.
- 0:52Speaker 3: I'm not happy with NATO because of the fact that
- 0:55Speaker 3: they didn't want to help us with the number one
- 0:58Speaker 3: state sponsor of terror.
- 0:59Speaker 2: That's a rain.
- 1:00Speaker 1: They were unwilling to help us.
- 1:01Speaker 5: But I was really testing.
- 1:02Speaker 6: I wanted to see whether or not they'd be.
- 1:04Speaker 2: There, Trump said the ceasefire with Iran maybe over, and
- 1:08Speaker 2: he also returned to an issue that triggered one of
- 1:11Speaker 2: NATO's worst internal disputes in recent years. Greenland.
- 1:15Speaker 6: It was Greenland that and it continues to be that
- 1:19Speaker 6: should be controlled by the United States, not by Denmark.
- 1:23Speaker 2: It prompted Danish Prime Minister Metafredrickson to again make clear
- 1:28Speaker 2: that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
- 1:31Speaker 4: I heard the US President yesterday, and I think the
- 1:35Speaker 4: US position is unfortunately very clear on this topic, and
- 1:40Speaker 4: our position is as clear as it has been all through.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Greenland is, of course not for sale.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Secretary General Mark Rotte tried to de escalate, insisting the
- 1:52Speaker 2: US President's comments where no reflection on NATO's unity. Credible
- 1:57Speaker 2: deterrence depends on unity and on paper. NATO delivered exactly
- 2:02Speaker 2: that with a final declaration agreed to by all thirty
- 2:07Speaker 2: two leaders, but by undermining allies complaining about their positions
- 2:12Speaker 2: on Iran and their repeating claims to their territory, Donald
- 2:17Speaker 2: Trump raises questions about his commitment to NATO's security. NATO's
- 2:23Speaker 2: commitment to Ukraine was also on display at the summit,
- 2:27Speaker 2: including from Donald Trump himself. He said the United States
- 2:31Speaker 2: will allowed Kiev to manufacture patriot interceptors under license, a
- 2:36Speaker 2: significant win for President Voladimir Zelenski, who has repeatedly appealed
- 2:42Speaker 2: for stronger protection against intensifying Russian attacks. Zelensky also secured
- 2:48Speaker 2: promises of one hundred forty billion euros in support over
- 2:52Speaker 2: the next two years, a strong message to Moscow that
- 2:56Speaker 2: Europe intends to stand by Ukraine for the long haul.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Yet when it comes to paying for that support, NATO's
- 3:03Speaker 2: European allies are not entirely united.
- 3:07Speaker 6: They are able to fight because of the support from
- 3:10Speaker 6: Western countries, and that support needs to be sustained. Right now,
- 3:16Speaker 6: quite a few number of countries are actually delivering the
- 3:20Speaker 6: vast majority of all the support that needs to be
- 3:23Speaker 6: increased from other countries as well.
- 3:26Speaker 2: In the end, the summit's declaration reaffirmed NATO's core guarantee
- 3:30Speaker 2: that an attack on one ally is an attack against all.
- 3:34Speaker 2: All thirty two leaders agreed, including President.
- 3:38Speaker 5: Trump W Serry Schultz, is following the NATO summit in Ankara.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Now.
- 3:42Speaker 5: The summit was supposed to focus on defense spending and
- 3:45Speaker 5: support for Ukraine, but around has loomed large. How much
- 3:48Speaker 5: has the Middle East crisis overshadowed NATO's core a gender.
- 3:55Speaker 3: That's right, Sarah. In between the two days of the summit,
- 3:59Speaker 3: this renewed bombing of the US on Iran began, and
- 4:04Speaker 3: so everyone woke up here today on what is the
- 4:06Speaker 3: main day of the meeting, and that was what was
- 4:10Speaker 3: being talked about. That definitely dominated the discussion this morning
- 4:14Speaker 3: between President Trump in his meeting with Secretary General Mark Rute,
- 4:18Speaker 3: and that's where Trump announced that he believed that the
- 4:21Speaker 3: MoU of Iran, this extended ceasefire was dead, it was over,
- 4:25Speaker 3: and he said that there may well be more attacks tonight.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth canceled his planned trip to Israel
- 4:32Speaker 3: from here in Akera to stay here and manage that situation.
- 4:36Speaker 3: So clearly that is something that Allies are very worried about, because,
- 4:40Speaker 3: as you mentioned, this was something that caused such deep
- 4:43Speaker 3: divisions in NATO when they did not enthusiastically support the
- 4:48Speaker 3: previous round of bombing, even though Mark Rut has been
- 4:50Speaker 3: careful to point out up to five thousand sorties did
- 4:54Speaker 3: leave from European air bases. So Allies supported Donald Trump
- 4:58Speaker 3: quietly on this, but they're probably simply don't back the war,
- 5:01Speaker 3: and so they couldn't say anything more.
- 5:04Speaker 5: And tera Ukraine featured in this final summit declaration being
- 5:08Speaker 5: called a contributor to NATO's security, does it change anything
- 5:11Speaker 5: in terms of Ukraine's relationship with the Alliance.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Well, of course, what Ukraine wants in the long run
- 5:18Speaker 3: is to become a member of NATO, and that's nowhere
- 5:21Speaker 3: close to being on the agenda for the Alliance. Yesterday,
- 5:24Speaker 3: it got a lot of new arms deals, it's selling
- 5:28Speaker 3: its drones to other allies. But perhaps Sarah, the biggest
- 5:32Speaker 3: change for Iran out of this summit came today when
- 5:35Speaker 3: Donald Trump indicated that he would allow Ukraine to start
- 5:39Speaker 3: producing its own pack three interceptors for the Patriot systems. Now,
- 5:43Speaker 3: that's something that Ukraine has been requesting for a long
- 5:45Speaker 3: time because it simply can't get them delivered by allies
- 5:49Speaker 3: fast enough with all of these ballistic missile attacks coming
- 5:52Speaker 3: night after night from Russia. Now, these interceptors take up
- 5:56Speaker 3: to two years to build in the West, so we're
- 5:58Speaker 3: not talking about an overnight changer. But certainly Ukraine has
- 6:01Speaker 3: been able to shorten timelines on a lot of weapons,
- 6:03Speaker 3: and they're very much hoping that they'll be able to
- 6:05Speaker 3: do that now.
- 6:07Speaker 5: Trump said afterwards that there had been a lot of love,
- 6:09Speaker 5: a lot of unity at this summit, but he himself
- 6:12Speaker 5: stirred up some division. Tell us a little bit more about.
- 6:14Speaker 3: That, that's right, and I will tell you more about
- 6:20Speaker 3: the love fest as well. But first Donald Trump threw
- 6:24Speaker 3: sort of a political football back into the NATO meeting
- 6:27Speaker 3: by bringing up Greenland again. He again said that he
- 6:30Speaker 3: believes the United States should control the island, which is
- 6:33Speaker 3: part of the Kingdom of Denmark. That did not go
- 6:35Speaker 3: over well. Plenty of leaders talked about that in their
- 6:37Speaker 3: arrival statements, with them reminding President Trump that Greenland is
- 6:41Speaker 3: a part of Denmark and Greenlanders will decide their own future.
- 6:44Speaker 3: He also really trashed Spain, saying that he was again
- 6:47Speaker 3: going to try to cut off trade with Spain, which
- 6:50Speaker 3: is not possible because it's a member of the European Union.
- 6:53Speaker 3: But then by the end, Sarah, at this last press conference,
- 6:57Speaker 3: it was almost bizarre. He said love over and over.
- 7:00Speaker 3: He said the other Allied leaders had told him that
- 7:03Speaker 3: they loved him, and he couldn't get over it. He said,
- 7:06Speaker 3: this is amazing unification, great summit, he said he couldn't
- 7:09Speaker 3: get over you know how much love was expressed in
- 7:11Speaker 3: the room. So that's not a word we normally hear
- 7:13Speaker 3: thrown around at NATO summus, and it was quite a
- 7:16Speaker 3: way to end the day.
- 7:16Speaker 5: I can tell you, what do you think, Terry, the
- 7:19Speaker 5: overall message coming out of this NATO meeting will be
- 7:22Speaker 5: what is the state of the Alliance?
- 7:26Speaker 3: Well, if you had asked me at midday, I would
- 7:29Speaker 3: have had a different answer than now. I think that
- 7:31Speaker 3: now allies are very much breathing a sigh of relief.
- 7:34Speaker 3: I don't know if they'll confirm that they expressed their
- 7:36Speaker 3: love to Donald Trump, but they certainly would prefer these
- 7:40Speaker 3: kind of messages coming out of the United States then
- 7:42Speaker 3: the ones that he was saying this morning that you
- 7:45Speaker 3: know he couldn't count on them. He has said in
- 7:47Speaker 3: the last days that Allies are not loyal to him.
- 7:49Speaker 3: So I think that everyone is saying that this was
- 7:52Speaker 3: a successful summit because in the end they passed their
- 7:54Speaker 3: declaration which reaffirmed their commitment to collective security, the famous
- 7:58Speaker 3: Article five. They promised Ukraine that they would be continuing
- 8:01Speaker 3: to fund it at a rate of seventy billion euros
- 8:05Speaker 3: including EU money for the next two years. They said
- 8:08Speaker 3: that they will continue shifting the burden of defense of
- 8:10Speaker 3: Europe onto the Europeans. Everybody's really on board with that.
- 8:14Speaker 3: So in this final declaration they reaffirmed all of those things,
- 8:18Speaker 3: and Donald Trump didn't put up a protest, So I
- 8:20Speaker 3: think everybody's really breathing a sigh of relief, if not love.
- 8:25Speaker 5: Hary Schultze, Benito summit in Ankara.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Thank you,
