- 0:24Now let's open our Bibles and study God's Word.
- 0:30Today we're going to be in Matthew 5, chapter 5, and we're
- 0:33going to be looking specifically at verse 9.
- 0:38And this passage of Scripture is really summed up as being called
- 0:43the Sermon on the Mount. This Pat, this sermon from Jesus
- 0:49consists of Matthew chapter 5, and it goes all the way through
- 0:52Matthew Chapter 7. And it's a big, powerful
- 0:55message. And Jesus says a lot of
- 0:57impactful things in this sermon that he gives on the mount.
- 1:02But the most famous part of this passage of this sermon is found
- 1:06in Matthew chapter 5, verses one through 12, and is commonly
- 1:11known today as the Bee attitudes.
- 1:16These beatitudes consist and describe the character of
- 1:20someone who has been transformed by a deeply personal
- 1:25relationship with God. When you look at the beatitudes
- 1:29in in verses one through 12 you can see evidence of this when it
- 1:34says blessed are those who hunger and thirst for
- 1:37righteousness, for they shall be filled.
- 1:39Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
- 1:42Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
- 1:45Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness
- 1:48sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
- 1:51When you examine the Beatitudes in Matthew chapter 5, it is
- 1:54clear that what Jesus is talking about is not just positive
- 1:58vibes. What he's talking about here are
- 2:00characteristics of someone who has been transformed by Jesus
- 2:03Christ. The things that we see in
- 2:06Matthew chapter 5 with the Beatitudes show someone that God
- 2:10is not just some religious experience.
- 2:12God is real because the only way that you can live out the
- 2:18characteristics that are found in the Beatitudes is by
- 2:22experiencing Christ and having Him transform you.
- 2:27Did you know that especially in the times we're living in, in
- 2:30the last days that we're living in, I know that we can look on
- 2:33the news and see that it's the last days that Jesus is coming
- 2:37soon. And our world doesn't just need
- 2:39to hear the gospel with our words, they need to see it.
- 2:43And the way that we show them is by demonstrating the
- 2:46characteristics of Christ in our lives.
- 2:49What does that look like? What this means is that as you
- 2:53get closer to Christ, you become more like Him.
- 2:56This means that God as as you get close to him, he's able to
- 3:00take someone who was consumed with rage and anger and turn
- 3:04them into someone who is consumed with love and grace.
- 3:08That's what Jesus does. As you enter into a relationship
- 3:11with Him and you pursue Him with everything that you are, God
- 3:14transforms your character so that what comes across the
- 3:18people is not the brokenness of who we are.
- 3:21It's Jesus. Where the world says you should
- 3:26be selfish, When as you get close to Christ, He teaches you
- 3:29to be giving and kind. Where the world says it should
- 3:32be all about you, you're about others.
- 3:35Why? Because as you get close to
- 3:37Christ, your character begins to change.
- 3:42And nothing communicates the gospel louder or clearer than
- 3:46someone whose life has been transformed by Jesus.
- 3:49And now the characteristics of Christ are coming through in how
- 3:52they live and how they treat other people.
- 3:56That's transformation. This isn't just being positive.
- 4:00This isn't just, well, I hope that this happens.
- 4:02This is what God does. There are those of you listening
- 4:07within the sound of my voice, those of you in this room right
- 4:09now who know that you were a completely different person
- 4:12before you met Jesus. But now that you've encountered
- 4:16Christ, there's there's been a transformation in you.
- 4:19And where there was once darkness, now there's now light.
- 4:24Where there was a life that was chained and consumed with sin,
- 4:28now you're walking in obedience to the Lord and you've
- 4:30experienced healing. Why?
- 4:32Because God is real and he transforms lives.
- 4:39The characteristics that are seen here show us how important
- 4:43it is that our faith is not just something we keep to ourselves,
- 4:47but we allow it to transform us so that those around us can see
- 4:51evidence that God is real as well.
- 4:55This is what makes Jesus statement in Matthew chapter 5
- 4:59verse 9 so impactful. He says blessed are the
- 5:04peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God.
- 5:10And so I've entitled this this study today.
- 5:13Blessed are the peace makers. But what is a peacemaker?
- 5:20I think many of us in the room are familiar with the term
- 5:24peacekeeper. You know, someone who who works
- 5:27hard to just kind of keep the peace.
- 5:30But that's not what Jesus is talking about here.
- 5:34But in order for us to understand what his messages
- 5:37here about being a peacemaker, we have to understand what a
- 5:40peacemaker is and what a peacemaker is not.
- 5:44First of all, a peacemaker is someone that willingly engages
- 5:50in conflict with the intention of helping establish peace
- 5:54between two opposing sides. That's what a peacemaker does.
- 6:00And furthermore, A peacemaker creates paths to understanding
- 6:04reconciliation and unity where false ideas, hatred, and
- 6:09division are present, even if it means they get caught in the
- 6:13crossfire. A peacemaker willingly
- 6:16sacrifices themselves, willingly places themselves in the line of
- 6:19fire if it means that there's a possibility that reconciliation
- 6:23can happen. That's what a peacemaker is.
- 6:28A peacemaker is not a peacekeeper.
- 6:33There's a big difference there. A peacemaker is not a
- 6:37peacekeeper because peacekeeping involves maintaining peace by
- 6:45avoiding conflict and other in order for other people to be
- 6:49happy, even if it means that they or someone else has to
- 6:54suffer for it. That's what peacekeeping is.
- 6:59I'm willing to sacrifice myself or someone else for the sake of
- 7:04keeping the peace rather than just addressing the issue that
- 7:08needs to be addressed. What Jesus is saying here is
- 7:13that peacemakers are blessed because when they see an issue,
- 7:18they willingly engage the problem rather than avoiding it.
- 7:24This is so powerful because this is exactly what Jesus did.
- 7:29He saw the problem of our sin and he didn't ignore it, but he
- 7:34willingly engaged it to bring reconciliation, to reconcile us
- 7:39to the Father through his death and resurrection.
- 7:43That's what he did for us. We are reconciled to the Father
- 7:47because Jesus saw the problem of sin and said, I'm going to bring
- 7:50reconciliation through my death and resurrection.
- 7:55This makes Jesus the ultimate peacemaker.
- 8:01And when we live like this, when we seek to bring reconciliation
- 8:05between people or when we're trying to reconcile
- 8:07relationships that have been broken in our lives, we are
- 8:10being like Jesus. We're being like him, and one
- 8:19practical way that we can live like Jesus when it comes to
- 8:24being peacemakers is by seeking reconciliation in our
- 8:27relationships. Why is this important?
- 8:34Again, because as we seek reconciliation, when we seek
- 8:40reconciliation, it gives people evidence.
- 8:42It gives people proof that God is real because the world will
- 8:48tell you if someone has offended you, you, you should not ever
- 8:51forgive them. And there's some situations
- 8:55where it's like, man, if, if, if you're unsafe, it's if it's
- 8:58abuse or whatever it is, There's a process that has to go through
- 9:00that. It's not just something that you
- 9:02just get over. It's a process of healing before
- 9:05you can get to a place of forgiveness.
- 9:06So please don't hear me say that if you have are unsafe or if
- 9:10you've ever been abused, that you should just forget
- 9:12everything and go forgive that person.
- 9:14That's not what I'm saying. But if there is an opportunity
- 9:17for reconciliation, as believers, as peacemakers, we
- 9:21are called to engage in that, not to ignore it.
- 9:28And when we do that, it gives people evidence that God is
- 9:32real. When you are willing to forgive
- 9:35someone that is wrong view, you're showing that person that
- 9:38God is real as the scripture says that that they shall be
- 9:43called sons and I'd say even daughters of God.
- 9:47We show the world and the people around us that God is real by
- 9:51being willing to forgive those who have offended us.
- 9:56And I know sometimes that's a hard pill to swallow.
- 9:58That's a hard thing to to comprehend, but understand that
- 10:01that's exactly what Jesus did with us.
- 10:04If we have been forgiven by God, we cannot withhold forgiveness
- 10:09from others. That's that's the crazy thing
- 10:12about this grace that we've been given is that Jesus was beaten,
- 10:18brutalized and nailed to a cross and he didn't even deserve it.
- 10:23And yet when Jesus was on the cross, what did he say?
- 10:26He said, Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.
- 10:33Jesus is not calling us to do anything that He has not first
- 10:37done. But when we seek to bring
- 10:42reconciliation, even when we forgive someone, we are being
- 10:46like Christ and giving the people around us evidence that
- 10:50God is real and that he has transformed our lives.
- 10:54Because many times forgiveness does not make sense.
- 10:59Reconciliation doesn't make sense.
- 11:02It's just easier. I'm just going to cut that
- 11:03person off and never talk to them again.
- 11:05And that's it. But when God transforms your
- 11:08heart and brings you to a place where you're able to say, man,
- 11:12you know what? What happened is not excuse.
- 11:15What happened was not right, but you know what?
- 11:17It's not my identity anymore. I'm not letting that.
- 11:20I'm not letting that be a weight on my shoulders anymore.
- 11:23I'm giving that to the Lord and walking in obedience to what He
- 11:26has called me to do because I know that He's in control of the
- 11:29situation. This is what happens as we live
- 11:36as peace makers. And if we want to live that out
- 11:41in our lives today, we have to understand three things about
- 11:44what it means to be a peacemaker.
- 11:48The first thing is that peacemakers don't avoid
- 11:50conflict. The second is that peacemakers
- 11:54imitate Christ. And the third thing is that
- 11:57peacemakers set the table. Let's get into our first point,
- 12:03which is peacemakers don't avoid conflict.
- 12:10One of the things that I know is one of the things that I know is
- 12:12true about all of us is that in the relationships that we have,
- 12:15we want them to be peaceful. I don't think anybody in the
- 12:19room or online or listening on the radio enjoys drama in their
- 12:22relationships with people. I don't think anyone would be
- 12:25like, I want all the smoke, man. I want all the drama.
- 12:27I want all the stuff. No, in reality, we want our
- 12:31relationships with people to be peaceful.
- 12:35But the truth is, the reality is, is that in our relationships
- 12:38with people, things sometimes get rocky and issues come up
- 12:42that need to be addressed. And I know that that sounds
- 12:46difficult, but it's actually normal.
- 12:50It's a normal part of a healthy relationship.
- 12:55Things come up and we work through it.
- 13:01I remember going to a marriage event with my wife a while ago
- 13:04and I remember the the speaker saying saying this.
- 13:07They said problems in marriage can either lead to greater
- 13:12intimacy with each other or they can lead to greater distance.
- 13:18The truth in this or the difference in this is the choice
- 13:21to work through conflict or avoid it.
- 13:25You may be sitting here today and you may be going through an
- 13:28issue in your marriage and you may be going like God.
- 13:30What is going on? Why is this happening?
- 13:32Why is this here? And you may not know why, but
- 13:35what you can be confident in is that God is walking with you
- 13:38through it. And as you trust Him through it,
- 13:40He'll He'll bring you to a place where you and your spouse are
- 13:43looking at each other. Like not only are we closer to
- 13:46the Lord, but we're closer to each other because we held on to
- 13:48Him in the midst of the conflict.
- 13:50We didn't avoid it, but we worked through it together.
- 13:55Conflict in marriage either brings you closer together or
- 13:58farther apart, and the only difference is the choice to
- 14:03either work through it or avoid it.
- 14:08But whether it's in marriage or any other relationship,
- 14:10unfortunately, many times when conflict arises, we just choose
- 14:15to avoid it. And when we avoid conflict,
- 14:19we're not being peacemakers. We're trying to be peacekeepers.
- 14:26I can tell some of you were looking at me like, well, why is
- 14:28that a bad thing? It's a bad thing because
- 14:33peacekeeping deceives you into thinking that you're being
- 14:36virtuous by not addressing something that needs to be
- 14:40addressed. And what you're choosing to do
- 14:45is to walk on egg shells around an issue hoping it will go away
- 14:49on its own. But the truth is, is that
- 14:52conflict, when you avoid conflict, it doesn't go away.
- 14:56It just grows and comes back with greater force.
- 15:00Hebrews 12/15 in the New Living Translation says, watch out,
- 15:04that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble
- 15:07you, corrupting many. I have found that peacekeeping
- 15:14is just another way of saying to somebody, I don't really care
- 15:17about you. But for us as believers, it is
- 15:22our responsibility to be peacekeepers in the
- 15:25relationships that God has given us.
- 15:28And what that means is by keeping short accounts with
- 15:30people, whether it be, you know, friends, spouses, friends, Co
- 15:33workers, especially our brothers and sisters in Christ, God has
- 15:39called us to be peacekeepers, meaning that we don't avoid
- 15:43conflict, we work through it. Peacemakers, there we go.
- 15:47Thank you. And let me just say it may take
- 15:53time before you're ready to address the issue.
- 15:56It may take time and that's OK. But when I, when I'm, I want to
- 16:02encourage you in is that even in the processes, as God is
- 16:05continuing to mold you and shape you, stay close to him.
- 16:09Because what God does is that as you stay close to Him, He'll
- 16:12bring you to a place where you're confident to step into
- 16:15that situation and address the issue without any fear, without
- 16:19any trepidation, not because of how great you are, but because
- 16:23you're confident in who He is. That's why it's so important to
- 16:27stay close to the Lord. Now, that being said, I know
- 16:33that, you know, being up here and talking about conflict
- 16:35resolution and talking about being a peacemaker, you know, it
- 16:39looks like I've got it all figured out and that I just love
- 16:42confrontation. And that's not the case.
- 16:46I envy people who enjoy and relish confrontation.
- 16:51You know, they walk into a situation, they're ready.
- 16:53They've got four or five arguments ready to go.
- 16:56I walk into conflict and I'm like, I don't really know what
- 16:58to say here. Jesus, take the wheel.
- 17:01I think that's all I got. I don't have it all figured out.
- 17:07But what I do know is that avoiding conflict only makes
- 17:11things worse because eventually both sides just put up walls.
- 17:18Think about it. How many marriages and
- 17:21relationships could have been saved if both parties involved
- 17:24were willing to humbly address the elephant in the room?
- 17:27And let me just be clear by saying that when I say don't
- 17:39avoid conflict, I'm not saying that you never show grace.
- 17:44We don't just go around giving people a piece of our mind
- 17:47because we can. You offended me.
- 17:49OK, it's time to fight. Let's go.
- 17:50Like, like, that's, that's not what I'm saying.
- 17:54We do show grace, but we don't avoid conflict either.
- 18:03We don't ignore it. And it's in that that
- 18:07peacemakers imitate Christ by being willing to address things.
- 18:15We do that because Jesus was the ultimate peacemaker.
- 18:19In fact, in Isaiah 961 of Jesus titles is that he is the Prince
- 18:24of Peace. And yet you could argue when you
- 18:28examine the scriptures that his life was anything but peaceful.
- 18:33In fact, Jesus constantly engaged in conflict, whether it
- 18:36was challenging the religious leaders, confronting sin,
- 18:39addressing the disciples unbelief, or preaching in
- 18:42hostile conditions. Yet despite all this tension,
- 18:50Jesus was still able to set people free.
- 18:52He was still able to show grace, and he was still able to build
- 18:55healthy relationships with others.
- 18:58He did all this while at the same time not being afraid to
- 19:02rock the boat. You can read the scriptures.
- 19:06No, Jesus will call you out. He didn't avoid things, but his
- 19:13motive for why he did that wasn't so that he could point
- 19:15his finger and go ha ha, look at you.
- 19:17It was always to bring reconciliation.
- 19:19It was always to bring greater understanding.
- 19:21It was always to to set someone free.
- 19:27Jesus didn't avoid that, but he lovingly addressed conflict.
- 19:31And as he is our example, we are called to be just like him.
- 19:37But so many of us avoid conflict because we have assumed that all
- 19:42conflict is something that is not worth dealing with.
- 19:46It's something that should just be avoided.
- 19:48It's not worth the trouble. And maybe you develop this
- 19:51perception because of how you were raised.
- 19:55Maybe someone in this room grew up in a household where if there
- 19:58was an issue that happened the day before, you just swept it on
- 20:02another rug and didn't talk about it.
- 20:05That's you didn't get to discuss it.
- 20:07You knew that you just needed to move on.
- 20:09What was said was said, What was done was done, and that's it.
- 20:12And just leave it alone. And so you grew up thinking
- 20:15that, OK, I don't want to address, or even you've never
- 20:18learned to address conflict in a healthy way because it was never
- 20:21demonstrated in your home. And I get that.
- 20:29But again, avoiding conflict is not an act of virtue.
- 20:33It's not a virtuous act. Instead, when we choose to avoid
- 20:36conflict, it's actually an act of self preservation.
- 20:41For example, have you ever chose to ignore an issue with someone
- 20:49because you weren't confident that you would win the argument
- 20:53or the conversation? I guess nobody in here has ever
- 20:58done that. You know, I'll, I'll say I have.
- 21:00I have. There have been times in my life
- 21:03where I knew I needed to address something with someone, but
- 21:05because I knew that they were a better communicator, they could
- 21:07argue really, really well. I just kind of chose the I don't
- 21:10want to look like the loser here, so I'll let you be you and
- 21:13I'll do me. That's not right.
- 21:17That's not what God has called us to do.
- 21:21God had to show me that when I feel that way, I've got to die
- 21:25to myself. Because at the end of the day,
- 21:29engaging conflict with the purpose of seeking
- 21:32reconciliation and honoring God. It's not even about me at all.
- 21:37It's about being like Jesus. There is nothing more Christ
- 21:41honoring than bringing reconciliation between two
- 21:45people who have been divided, whether it be you and somebody
- 21:48else or whatever that may be. When you do that, you're being
- 21:51like Christ. When you walk in forgiveness and
- 21:53forgive someone, you are being like Christ.
- 21:57You are demonstrating the very character that He has called us
- 22:00to live out in this world. I'll put it this way, when you
- 22:04do that, God smiles because you're following in His
- 22:08footsteps. He forgave us, he forgives us.
- 22:15Some of us are this morning have received new mercies from the
- 22:19Lord because he forgave us for whatever something we did
- 22:21yesterday, last night, whatever it is we are walking in his
- 22:23forgiveness. And if he we have been forgiven
- 22:26like that from God, we are called to do the same with
- 22:31others. Mark Chapter 9 verse 50 says
- 22:36have salt in yourselves and have peace with one another.
- 22:40Romans 12/18 says if possible, as much as depends on you, live
- 22:45peaceably with all men. But then the question becomes
- 22:53this, If there's conflict in our relationships and we know that
- 23:00there's an issue, how do we pursue peace through it in a
- 23:05healthy way? How do we actually do that?
- 23:10Well, we do that by understanding that peacemakers
- 23:12set the table. Now, there are many scriptures
- 23:17that that show us how to deal with, you know, to confront
- 23:23something and to do it in a healthy way.
- 23:24There's many books written on that.
- 23:26But I want to share with you a technique that God has given me
- 23:28any time, has given me to use any time that I've run into any
- 23:32conflict with somebody. And I call this technique
- 23:36setting the table. For example, in order for you to
- 23:42be ready to eat a meal, you have to set the table.
- 23:47You need plates, forks, knives, spoons, napkins, cups, etcetera.
- 23:53Some of you are thinking like placemats and candles and you
- 23:56know all those different things. You've got to set the table so
- 23:59that you can before you're ready to eat.
- 24:01If the table's not set, you're not ready.
- 24:04And in the same way, if you don't set the table before you
- 24:07address an issue, the person that you're talking to, that
- 24:11you're going to be talking to, you may not be ready to receive
- 24:13what you're about to say. You must set the table before
- 24:19you address an issue. Now, what does this look like?
- 24:24I believe there are five ways that we can set the table so
- 24:27that we can engage in healthy conflict resolution and seek to
- 24:30be peacemakers with the peace with the people that God has
- 24:33around us. The first way that we set the
- 24:35table is by making sure that the conversation happens at a time
- 24:39where you're both awake and not exhausted.
- 24:43Especially for those of you who have small kids, it's not wise
- 24:46to address an issue with your spouse after you've been with
- 24:50the kids all day and you know all the craziness of life and
- 24:53finally you put the kids down, you're dead tired at night, and
- 24:55then you're going to like, hey, I got to talk to you about
- 24:57something, not the right time. Why?
- 25:02Because when you're tired, your fuse is short, you're not really
- 25:06willing to listen because you're exhausted.
- 25:10Or maybe it's not with your spouse to find.
- 25:11Find the time and a place that works for you and that person
- 25:14that you're going to talk with. It's so important.
- 25:21The second way that we set the table is by checking our tone.
- 25:28Tone is so important when you're communicating with someone and
- 25:31you're seeking to bring reconciliation between you 2
- 25:34It's so important. For example, there's a big
- 25:37difference between telling someone like this, we need to
- 25:40talk versus hey, can we have a conversation.
- 25:46Which one would you rather be up for, the aggressive one or the
- 25:51gentler one, right? With the aggression, with the
- 25:55aggression in the tone, the walls go up immediately.
- 25:58I'm not talking to you about nothing.
- 26:02We about the fight now, but when it there's gentleness, hey, can
- 26:07we have a conversation about this now there's an open door
- 26:10for OK, I don't know what it's about, but OK, let's let's have
- 26:14a conversation. Tone is so important when you're
- 26:19communicating with someone and seeking to bring reconciliation.
- 26:24The third way that we set the table is by explaining that the
- 26:28purpose of the conversation is to promote health in the
- 26:33relationship, not to point fingers or condemn.
- 26:37This has to be understood before you bring up the issue.
- 26:42It must be communicated to the person that you're talking to
- 26:44that my purpose in this is not to point the finger at you, it's
- 26:50not to condemn you. It's to seek to strengthen our
- 26:53relationship and even to to bring reconciliation if if
- 26:57possible. I'll put it to you this way.
- 27:03If you want to shut down any conversation, any good
- 27:06conversation that can lead to reconciliation, start by saying
- 27:09you always. If you lead in by saying you
- 27:14always, you can forget the conversation because what you're
- 27:18doing is you're devaluing that person by saying you have never
- 27:21done anything good. You always do this.
- 27:25You are immediately condemning them with one word.
- 27:29And so when you set the table, it's setting the table helping
- 27:32them understand. I'm not here to point the finger
- 27:34at you. I'm not here to condemn you.
- 27:36I'm not here to box you in and say you're always this thing.
- 27:39I'm here to seek to bring reconciliation if possible, and
- 27:42so that we can resolve this conflict in a healthy way.
- 27:49The fourth way that we can set the table is make sure that in
- 27:53the conversation it's understood that whoever sharing is going to
- 27:57be listened to without interruption.
- 28:00That's the big one, without interruption.
- 28:07And then sometimes that's hard because when you're listening to
- 28:09someone and maybe they have something against you or maybe
- 28:11you know, they're sharing their part or whatever it is you want
- 28:13to interrupt and say, no, no, that's not what no, I remember
- 28:18it differently. No, what you do in that moment
- 28:22by not is that you're showing them that you're not listening.
- 28:25And when someone does not feel heard, why would they continue
- 28:28to share? Why would there be an open
- 28:31opportunity for reconciliation if they're not being listened to
- 28:34and understood? So it has to be understood at
- 28:39the beginning, hey, we're going to share without interruption.
- 28:44The fifth thing that we can do to set the table is don't go in
- 28:49guns blazing, but start with observations.
- 28:56When you go in guns blazing, it immediately causes that person
- 28:59to put the wall up. But if you start with
- 29:02observations by saying, hey, here's a pattern that I've seen,
- 29:05can you help me understand why this this becomes the outcome?
- 29:08Or is there anything I can do to help with this?
- 29:11Start with observations. Those are five ways that we can
- 29:16set the table for any healthy conflict resolution.
- 29:21Now, there may be times where you don't have time to set the
- 29:24table and you just got to handle something.
- 29:27But even in that, as believers, as peacemakers, our goal is
- 29:31never to condemn. It's always to seek healthy
- 29:34reconciliation. What's frustrating about what
- 29:41I've shared with you is that sometimes the timing is not
- 29:43right. Sometimes God has to work on
- 29:46somebody else's heart before there's an opportunity for
- 29:48reconciliation. Sometimes God has to work on
- 29:51your heart before there's an opportunity for reconciliation.
- 29:55But that's why we stay close to the Lord because as you stay
- 29:58close to Him, He will bring you to a place where you're willing
- 30:01to walk into a situation and either forgive someone or or
- 30:05reconcile with someone, fully knowing that God is in control.
- 30:10Now, if you reconcile with somebody, that doesn't mean that
- 30:13they have access to your life, doesn't mean that they're going
- 30:16to be your best friend. But what it means is that
- 30:18whatever offense that they did, whatever it is, it's no longer
- 30:21something you carry in your heart.
- 30:23It's no longer something that you allow to define you, but you
- 30:27give it to the Lord and allow Him to deal with that person,
- 30:30but you don't carry it around. Peacemakers engage in healthy
- 30:36conflict by setting the table so that both sides feel heard and
- 30:41Christ is glorified. So what does this mean for all
- 30:46of us today? What it means is that we give
- 30:52proof for the fact that God is real and that we are His
- 30:55children by being willing to live as peacemakers in the
- 30:59relationships that God has allowed us to be in.
- 31:03Because living as a peacemaker and seeking healthy conflict
- 31:06resolution with people, we bring glory to God and we honour Him
- 31:11and show people that He is transforming our lives.
- 31:16This is the ministry that God has called us to. 2nd
- 31:19Corinthians 518 says now all things are of God who reconciled
- 31:24us to Himself through Jesus Christ and having and has given
- 31:29us the ministry of reconciliation.
- 31:37We follow His example by doing the same, by reconciling, by
- 31:42seeking forgiveness. We're becoming more like Christ
- 31:48and pointing people to Him. Let's pray.
- 32:02Father in Heaven, we come before you in this time.
- 32:09Not because what we've just talked about here is easy.
- 32:17We come before you seeking your help.
- 32:21Father, we cannot be peacemakers in our flesh or in our own
- 32:26ability. We can only do that as our life
- 32:30is consumed with you, as you are filling us, Lord, with your
- 32:34spirit, as you are drawing us to you, as you are transforming our
- 32:40lives. Father, I pray for everyone in
- 32:45this room and I pray, Lord, that you would fill this place with
- 32:50Your spirit. I pray for everyone watching
- 32:51online or listening on the radio.
- 32:53What I pray that you'd fill them with your spirit.
- 32:57Whatever that issue is, whatever that offence is, what I pray
- 32:59that right now they would know that they can give that to you
- 33:01and that you're not going to fumble it, Lord, you're going to
- 33:04take it. You're going to work on it.
- 33:05You're going to work on their heart.
- 33:07You're going to work on everyone involved in that process.
- 33:12In fact, in this moment, if you're here right now, if you're
- 33:15in house, you're here and you know that there's a conflict in
- 33:19your life that you know needs to be addressed in a situation
- 33:22where you know God, you, you need God to show up in a big way
- 33:26to bring reconciliation and to bring healing.
- 33:29Would you be bold this morning and stand to your feet?
- 33:32I just want to pray for you. If you're online, you can stand.
- 33:38If you're listening on the radio, you can raise the hand.
- 33:44Thank you for standing. I want to pray for you, Father.
- 33:48I pray for every situation represented right here, right
- 33:51now. Everyone's standing right here,
- 33:53right now as an act of faith, Lord, knowing that they cannot
- 33:59resolve the conflict in their lives in their own power.
- 34:04I pray in the name of Jesus, Lord, that in every situation
- 34:08you would show up in a big way. I pray that even as they leave
- 34:11here today that they would get a phone call that's different,
- 34:14that that interaction would be different, that you would open
- 34:17doors that have been shut for a long time.
- 34:21I pray God for a molding and a transformation of their hearts,
- 34:24Lord, that you would draw them to you in such a way that you
- 34:28begin to bring a healing that they have sought after for a
- 34:31long time, where they know that whatever happened is not their
- 34:35identity. That is not a weight that they
- 34:39need to carry. Lord, your word says that your
- 34:41yoke is easy and Your burden light.
- 34:45So I pray, Lord, that they would lay whatever it is at Your feet
- 34:49and that you would show up in a powerful way to bring
- 34:51reconciliation, to bring healing in the situations they're
- 34:56facing. Father, as a church, Lord, we
- 35:00ask that you would come soon. We know that you're on the way.
- 35:05And in that time, God, we asked, Lord, that you'd help us to
- 35:07represent you, not just in the things that we say, but in our
- 35:11conduct, in our character. Help us to lead people to you,
- 35:17Lord, by our ability to simply reflect you, to live like you,
- 35:22to represent you to the people that you've placed around us,
- 35:26even if it means as peacemakers. Thank you Father for this time
- 35:32in Jesus name, Amen. We pray that you've been
