Latest / Birdland Territory / Diamondbacks Take Series From Orioles in Frustrating Fashion
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Hey, Birdland. A tough ending to the series for the
- 0:10Speaker 1: Orioles with the Arizona Diamondbacks. After that great win Monday,
- 0:14Speaker 1: they got beat twice in close games, so they lose
- 0:16Speaker 1: that series and now they head on the road. No
- 0:19Speaker 1: off days here, they're playing a stretch of thirteen games
- 0:21Speaker 1: in thirteen days. Cleveland up next on Thursday night. Welcome in.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Speaking about playing a lot. Birdland's territory is coming at
- 0:29Speaker 1: you a lot. Here we are again, and what do
- 0:31Speaker 1: we say, guys the other day? After that win, momentum
- 0:34Speaker 1: baseball is fleeting. You can't count on that big win
- 0:38Speaker 1: riding you for the next two weeks. It doesn't happen
- 0:40Speaker 1: that way, and it didn't happen that way for the Oriels.
- 0:42Speaker 1: It's kind of frustrating a couple of days.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so.
- 0:47Speaker 3: I think, like we said the other day, it's every
- 0:49Speaker 3: game in one sixty two is just its own game,
- 0:52Speaker 3: and it's for whatever reason, it's really hard and professional
- 0:55Speaker 3: Baseball league to continue to get wins every single day.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Even after a big win like that, you think the
- 1:00Speaker 3: momentum is going to continue, but you got to go
- 1:02Speaker 3: out the next day and you got to execute and
- 1:05Speaker 3: Unfortunately these last couple games. I think it's more frustrating
- 1:08Speaker 3: than anything else, just so close right there both games,
- 1:12Speaker 3: and you come at it with a series loss. I
- 1:14Speaker 3: know it's early, and we talked about last week that
- 1:16Speaker 3: you don't get down too much, but this is one
- 1:18Speaker 3: of those series that just seems to sting a little
- 1:20Speaker 3: bit more than even the Pirates series getting swept a
- 1:22Speaker 3: couple weeks ago.
- 1:24Speaker 4: I'm totally with you, Brad, especially coming off Game one.
- 1:28Speaker 4: You get that comeback down six runs through the first
- 1:31Speaker 4: five innings, and then you have Trevor Rodgers on the
- 1:33Speaker 4: bump Tuesday, Kyle Bradish on the bump today, and with
- 1:38Speaker 4: Rogers it's just gotten to the point every single time
- 1:40Speaker 4: that he starts, you expect the Orioles to win that ballgame,
- 1:44Speaker 4: and unfortunately for him last night, that fifth inning just
- 1:48Speaker 4: got really rough for him. A lot of hard contact,
- 1:51Speaker 4: he gave up four of his nine hits in that frame.
- 1:54Speaker 4: He walked a batter that was his only walk in
- 1:56Speaker 4: that game, But a lot of self inflicted mistakes in
- 2:00Speaker 4: last night's one run loss, where Jeremiah Jackson, who's been
- 2:04Speaker 4: spectacular in this stretch, I don't mean to pick on him,
- 2:07Speaker 4: but him getting back picked at third base, James mccannon
- 2:10Speaker 4: picking him off there when Gunner Henderson's at bat with
- 2:14Speaker 4: one out. That type of thing can't happen. I know.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Beaver's he got thrown out trying to steal a base
- 2:20Speaker 4: close in that one, and today a defensive blunder West
- 2:25Speaker 4: and Wilson in left field. It was initially ruled in
- 2:28Speaker 4: error and then it was changed into a two run triple.
- 2:32Speaker 4: That was a big time moment in the game.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's it's it just seems to be these
- 2:38Speaker 3: little tiny things that, like you said, you don't want
- 2:40Speaker 3: to nitpick these guys, but it's just these these plays
- 2:43Speaker 3: that are leading to the results that they're getting right now.
- 2:46Speaker 3: And it's just like I said, it's just a frustrating
- 2:48Speaker 3: a couple of days, and I'm sure they're feeling a
- 2:50Speaker 3: little frustrated. But to go to Cleveland and face a
- 2:52Speaker 3: tough squad there where you know it's going to be
- 2:54Speaker 3: good pitching and you got to execute everything to beat
- 2:56Speaker 3: that team. It's it's what they've proven over the last
- 2:58Speaker 3: decade or so. And yeah, just you wanted to get
- 3:02Speaker 3: that series one bad and especially today when you get
- 3:05Speaker 3: into extras and then it just kind of seems unravel
- 3:07Speaker 3: there in the tenth. But it's just a frustrating a
- 3:10Speaker 3: couple of days, and you just, like we talked about,
- 3:12Speaker 3: just the momentum, it's just really hard to keep in
- 3:13Speaker 3: the major leagues. And you would hope that those big
- 3:16Speaker 3: homers on Monday would have carried over, but unfortunately they didn't,
- 3:19Speaker 3: and they find themselves losing these last couple of games
- 3:22Speaker 3: to the Diamondbacks.
- 3:24Speaker 1: So the Oriols are nine to nine, eighteen games into
- 3:26Speaker 1: this thing. They had one six out of seven after Monday,
- 3:30Speaker 1: so now they've won six out of nine, two straight
- 3:32Speaker 1: losses nine and nine overall, as they had to Cleveland
- 3:35Speaker 1: for four, Kansas City for three. Now, any fan out there,
- 3:39Speaker 1: guys that had their tax day Oriel outfield of Weston
- 3:43Speaker 1: Wilson in left, Lais Alexander and center, and Jonathan Rodriguez
- 3:48Speaker 1: in right, go cash a huge ticket at the window.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I did not see this one coming. And so Beaver's
- 3:56Speaker 1: didn't start, Howser didn't start to didn't start, and Ward
- 4:01Speaker 1: started as the dight. So they got seven guys who
- 4:03Speaker 1: they couldn't have used out there. These three started, and
- 4:07Speaker 1: so it was an interesting outfield. What did you guys
- 4:09Speaker 1: think when you saw that?
- 4:11Speaker 4: Well, Steve, I think this is where all of the
- 4:14Speaker 4: injuries add up in this situation where Tyler O'Neil absolutely
- 4:19Speaker 4: would have been out there against edwardo Rodriguez. And it's
- 4:22Speaker 4: crazy enough, guys, in Game eighteen, this is the first
- 4:25Speaker 4: left handed starting pitcher that the Orioles have faced. That's
- 4:28Speaker 4: just it blows your mind thinking about it. But O'Neil
- 4:32Speaker 4: absolutely would have been out there in this situation. I
- 4:35Speaker 4: know these guys aren't outfielders obviously, but Ryan Mountcastle would
- 4:39Speaker 4: have been out there against a lefty. Adley Rutchman would
- 4:42Speaker 4: have been out there against the lefty. But this was
- 4:46Speaker 4: very much a makeshift lineup and unfortunately the ball ended
- 4:49Speaker 4: up finding West and Wilson. And it's a play that
- 4:52Speaker 4: I'm sure he would say that he should make a
- 4:55Speaker 4: ball that hit off his glove, but that's a tough
- 4:58Speaker 4: left field to play now, d with the wall moving back,
- 5:01Speaker 4: it came back in and he was right in that
- 5:04Speaker 4: Jett part of the wall.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's you know where the warning trek is,
- 5:08Speaker 3: you feel it, but like you said, you know it's
- 5:10Speaker 3: short in that one part and it goes deep in
- 5:12Speaker 3: the next and so he probably thought he had a
- 5:14Speaker 3: half step more and just unfortunately missed that one.
- 5:16Speaker 2: And even that play early on.
- 5:17Speaker 3: In the game with Rodriguez and Blaize Alexander coming together
- 5:21Speaker 3: in center field, a little miscommunity communication there, it was.
- 5:25Speaker 3: It's just those things you you don't want to see,
- 5:27Speaker 3: especially with some of the defensive stuff we've been talking
- 5:29Speaker 3: about the last week or so. So it's it's definitely
- 5:32Speaker 3: seems the injuries are catching up at this point. But
- 5:35Speaker 3: at the same time, you had, uh, sorry leftfielder, he
- 5:39Speaker 3: had a good hit today.
- 5:40Speaker 2: You know, start a rally, they end up being.
- 5:42Speaker 3: The two after and they're they're doing what they need
- 5:46Speaker 3: to do offensively and getting enough of hits here and there.
- 5:49Speaker 3: But it's it's just not a full roster at this point,
- 5:52Speaker 3: and you just wonder what would be today if they
- 5:54Speaker 3: had that full roster, especially facing the left for the
- 5:57Speaker 3: first time, you'd have way more ridies in that lineup
- 5:59Speaker 3: that are stablished major leaguers, and you don't know what
- 6:02Speaker 3: would have happened. It could have been the saame result,
- 6:03Speaker 3: but you just you always wonder what if. And this
- 6:05Speaker 3: is one of those series where when you look back
- 6:07Speaker 3: and you miss the playoffs by a game or two,
- 6:09Speaker 3: you just wonder if we had our full lineup.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Is this one of those games that comes back.
- 6:13Speaker 3: I know it's early, but it's still one of those
- 6:14Speaker 3: things that you might think about come September.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Interesting. And you know, Western Wilson is more infielder than outfielder,
- 6:22Speaker 1: so as Blaize Alexander, but they both found themselves out
- 6:25Speaker 1: there today. And westn Wilson, you know, you know he
- 6:28Speaker 1: would say I should catch that ball, but you called it,
- 6:30Speaker 1: tim What a tough spot. If he had twenty more
- 6:33Speaker 1: feet of real estate, he would have easily caught that ball.
- 6:36Speaker 1: But you get a little timid when you got a
- 6:38Speaker 1: wall here, you got a wall behind you. That triangle
- 6:41Speaker 1: is really challenging at Camden Yards. And I originally thought
- 6:46Speaker 1: I was okay with two run triple, but now having
- 6:49Speaker 1: watched it numerous times, I think it was an era
- 6:51Speaker 1: because it hit a part of part of his glove,
- 6:54Speaker 1: and I think most good outfitters make that play. Did
- 6:57Speaker 1: you guys see hit or error on that?
- 7:01Speaker 4: I think it was an error as well, Steve, just
- 7:04Speaker 4: you said it. Weston Wilson. I'm sure if he was
- 7:07Speaker 4: asked about in the clubhouse after the game. If a
- 7:09Speaker 4: ball hits your glove as an outfielder, you expect to
- 7:13Speaker 4: catch it. But Wilson just his inexperience in that ballpark,
- 7:18Speaker 4: Like you know, in that left field, that's a difficult
- 7:21Speaker 4: left field to play. And I remember them talking a
- 7:25Speaker 4: couple of years ago when the wall was back to
- 7:28Speaker 4: you know, the original spot where they moved it back
- 7:30Speaker 4: when Austin Hayes played left field, they talked about having
- 7:33Speaker 4: basically two center fielders in their outfield just because it's
- 7:37Speaker 4: such a big area to play, so a guy that's
- 7:41Speaker 4: not familiar with it, and heck, think about this, Brad.
- 7:44Speaker 4: I remember Taylor Ward opening day. Remember he had a
- 7:47Speaker 4: ball go off of the wall in the eighth inning.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Tyler Wells was pitching at that time. Byron Bucks didn't
- 7:53Speaker 4: hit it. It turned a double into a triple. He
- 7:55Speaker 4: played it off the wall incorrectly. He ended up going
- 7:58Speaker 4: back to Camden Yards during the off day the following
- 8:02Speaker 4: day just to get work playing it off that left
- 8:04Speaker 4: field wall.
- 8:05Speaker 3: And Wards a veteran, Yeah, it's I think it might
- 8:09Speaker 3: have been one of West's first times in Cannon Yards
- 8:13Speaker 3: with the new dimension so whether he had one or
- 8:15Speaker 3: two days to kind of see what it was like
- 8:16Speaker 3: out there, it's totally different obviously when you're out there
- 8:19Speaker 3: full speed, and even speaking of board that one home
- 8:21Speaker 3: run that he robbed a couple of years ago, you're
- 8:23Speaker 3: camped under that, but he's robbing on that little part
- 8:25Speaker 3: going back, and it's it's a funky little left field
- 8:28Speaker 3: now where it used to be pretty basic and short
- 8:30Speaker 3: out there, then it went super big and high wall
- 8:33Speaker 3: and everything out there. Now it's plays a little funky,
- 8:36Speaker 3: So it's gonna be it's gonna take a little bit
- 8:37Speaker 3: of adjustment, but you know, credit to you know, they're
- 8:40Speaker 3: probably out there working every day, and like you said,
- 8:43Speaker 3: he probably he knows he should have caught it, and
- 8:46Speaker 3: it's just it's unfortunate went off his glove. I think
- 8:49Speaker 3: Ben McDonald made a good point today in the broadcast,
- 8:51Speaker 3: just said his last few steps kind of indicated that
- 8:53Speaker 3: it probably should have been in there, just because he
- 8:55Speaker 3: was kind of coasting towards it as opposed to being
- 8:58Speaker 3: on the full run to go get it. So I
- 9:00Speaker 3: don't know, it's a tough, tough call, and they could
- 9:02Speaker 3: go back and end.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Up changing it.
- 9:03Speaker 3: But you never know MLB what they're gonna do if
- 9:06Speaker 3: they get a decision they.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Have to make in overturn.
- 9:08Speaker 3: But just a tough play you wish you would have
- 9:10Speaker 3: had and then you just don't know where the game
- 9:12Speaker 3: goes from there. And you have a lead and get
- 9:13Speaker 3: it to your bullpen, and guys have been laid out
- 9:15Speaker 3: lights out lately, so it's unfortunately he didn't come down
- 9:19Speaker 3: with that, But I think that's just part of the
- 9:20Speaker 3: hiccups you're going to have when you have to put
- 9:21Speaker 3: guys out there that are not used to playing these positions.
- 9:25Speaker 1: So the birds lose, they fall to nine and nine.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Kyle Bradish had some VLO pumping today, especially early. We'll
- 9:32Speaker 1: touch you on that and more coming up.
- 9:34Speaker 4: Kratz.
- 9:35Speaker 5: The world has a cord problem. Wires everywhere. It's twenty
- 9:39Speaker 5: twenty six and it is time to get a ridge wallet.
- 9:43Speaker 6: Five and one. It's not a wallet, it's a charger.
- 9:47Speaker 6: Look at this thing. It sticks to your phone. You
- 9:49Speaker 6: push the button. It's charging your phone while you can
- 9:52Speaker 6: charge two different items at the same time. Oh and
- 9:55Speaker 6: don't forget while it's charging. You got a little a
- 9:59Speaker 6: little lean to John that'll help it sit right there.
- 10:03Speaker 6: Appreciate your Ridge wallet.
- 10:04Speaker 5: This is so nice, which is great for me. If
- 10:06Speaker 5: I'm at the airport, I'm watching a game, I can
- 10:08Speaker 5: charge five devices and then I can just watch something
- 10:11Speaker 5: on the phone. Of course, they still have the wallets
- 10:13Speaker 5: that are money too, and we know the code. It's
- 10:15Speaker 5: nice and simple. It's foul foul one thing to pack.
- 10:19Speaker 5: Five ways to power. You can find Ridge's power bank
- 10:22Speaker 5: at best Buy or our listeners can get ten percent
- 10:24Speaker 5: off at Ridge dot com by using code foul at checkout.
- 10:27Speaker 5: Head to Ridge dot com use code foul and you're
- 10:29Speaker 5: all set. After your purchase, they'll ask you where you
- 10:31Speaker 5: heard about them. Please support FT until them.
- 10:33Speaker 1: We sent you. Hey, you're watching Birdland's territory here on
- 10:38Speaker 1: YouTube and some of the podcast networks as well, and
- 10:42Speaker 1: we hope you will subscribe to our YouTube channel. We've
- 10:45Speaker 1: been doing really well with our initial shows here, some
- 10:49Speaker 1: initial success, so hopefully Birdland you keep that comment. We
- 10:52Speaker 1: really thank you for following us. Let's talk about Kyle
- 10:55Speaker 1: Bradish today. Guys. Six innings, eight hits, four runs, eras
- 10:59Speaker 1: five four nine coming out of this maybe if that
- 11:02Speaker 1: scored an air the play we talked about, it's two
- 11:04Speaker 1: earned runs not four and he has his first quality
- 11:07Speaker 1: start after the game. But Valburnaz and Bradish himself would
- 11:11Speaker 1: say this was his best so far. We saw a
- 11:15Speaker 1: lot of velocity early. I want to touch on that
- 11:16Speaker 1: in a minute, but overall, was this more like the
- 11:20Speaker 1: Kyle bradsh we expect to see and in my opinion,
- 11:23Speaker 1: not yet where we're going to see.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I think today was by far his best. I
- 11:29Speaker 3: think just his stuff all around. And the one thing
- 11:32Speaker 3: I really noticed was when he throws his force, I
- 11:34Speaker 3: mean he really gets behind it, he gets a little
- 11:36Speaker 3: bit of cut and yeah, I saw that earlier in
- 11:37Speaker 3: the game, especially, he had a little bit of cut
- 11:39Speaker 3: to it, where early on it kind of seems like
- 11:42Speaker 3: he was having more ride to it and it was
- 11:43Speaker 3: a little bit straighter. Maybe I missed something in the
- 11:46Speaker 3: first couple of starts, but I thought that was his
- 11:48Speaker 3: best stuff by far. It almost seemed like it was
- 11:50Speaker 3: almost too good today, like if that makes any sense.
- 11:53Speaker 3: I feel like he wasn't used to having that stuff today,
- 11:57Speaker 3: and I felt like he was throwing, oh, breaking balls
- 12:00Speaker 3: He's expecting to break in the zone, and they were
- 12:01Speaker 3: breaking out of the zone almost as if a two
- 12:03Speaker 3: strike pitch. So to me, that was by far his
- 12:06Speaker 3: best stuff and it was good to see him get
- 12:07Speaker 3: through that sixth inning today. I felt like he should
- 12:10Speaker 3: have had a much better stat line than what he
- 12:11Speaker 3: had based on the stuff that I was seeing today.
- 12:14Speaker 2: But everything seemed really sharp.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Like I said, it was almost one of those games
- 12:18Speaker 3: where I know it is a reliever of my first
- 12:20Speaker 3: outing out of spring training. It was like, Okay, where
- 12:22Speaker 3: is my change I'm going to do? What is my
- 12:23Speaker 3: slader going to do? And it had way more veloss
- 12:26Speaker 3: a on my fastball. My change up was breaking more,
- 12:28Speaker 3: my slaughder was breaking more. It's like almost reciting yourself.
- 12:31Speaker 3: So I'm hoping he can take the data that he
- 12:34Speaker 3: has today and just kind of just get better. That
- 12:36Speaker 3: was cy Young type stuff. That was what we used
- 12:38Speaker 3: to seeing from Kyle Bradish, and I expect to see
- 12:41Speaker 3: better things moving forward, And like I said, I just
- 12:43Speaker 3: I thought it should have been better results, and I
- 12:45Speaker 3: think he will moving forward after that start.
- 12:48Speaker 4: This was definitely a step in the right direction for
- 12:51Speaker 4: Kyle Bradish. A couple of big positives for him. Things
- 12:54Speaker 4: that were very un Kyle Bradish, like his first three
- 12:57Speaker 4: starts hit three walks, in each of them. Of his
- 13:00Speaker 4: first three starts, he only had one walk today. Now
- 13:02Speaker 4: it ended up burning him. It was Corbyn Carroll, a
- 13:05Speaker 4: two out walk, and then a couple batters later that
- 13:08Speaker 4: was where West and Wilson ended up missplaying that ball
- 13:11Speaker 4: that was ruled for a triple. But Bradish was able
- 13:14Speaker 4: to get strike one. He got strike one on what
- 13:17Speaker 4: eighteen of twenty seven batters. Pitching ahead is just so
- 13:21Speaker 4: so big And then Steve you mentioned it. The velocity
- 13:24Speaker 4: was way up for him. He hit ninety eight point
- 13:28Speaker 4: nine miles per hour on a sinker in the first
- 13:30Speaker 4: any of the game. That's the hardest pitch that Bradish
- 13:33Speaker 4: has thrown in his career and it was over two
- 13:36Speaker 4: miles per hour on average faster this season then compared
- 13:41Speaker 4: to his three starts as a total as an overall
- 13:45Speaker 4: for his sinkers. So, Kyle Bradish, He'll say it, he's
- 13:48Speaker 4: still not fully himself yet, but this was much more
- 13:52Speaker 4: encouraging that we saw today.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Brad, Does that philosophy mean anything to you? I mean,
- 13:58Speaker 1: maybe today it was a warm day and ball more.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Maybe that factored. He was really pumped early, as Tim said,
- 14:03Speaker 1: touching ninety eight in the first, his average two seemer
- 14:06Speaker 1: for the game for his outing today was ninety six
- 14:09Speaker 1: point seven, a couple mile an hour more than we're
- 14:11Speaker 1: used to. He's got plenty enough velocity with his arsenal
- 14:14Speaker 1: to win on just about any night. What do we
- 14:17Speaker 1: read into, if anything, or maybe nothing, that he threw
- 14:21Speaker 1: so hard today.
- 14:23Speaker 3: I think it's more of what you're going to see
- 14:24Speaker 3: to come. I think as the weather worms up in Baltimore,
- 14:27Speaker 3: you're going to see higher velocity. And I think for
- 14:30Speaker 3: him with it, he's just got such good stuff that,
- 14:33Speaker 3: like Tim was saying, just starting in the zone that
- 14:35Speaker 3: was such a key today, And I think just having
- 14:37Speaker 3: that extra little velocity gives you a little bit more
- 14:40Speaker 3: confidence when you're on the mound to be able to
- 14:42Speaker 3: attack the guys with your fastball earthly account. I know
- 14:44Speaker 3: a lot of times he seems to like to start
- 14:46Speaker 3: with his breaking ball, and his last start then made
- 14:48Speaker 3: a point about him really going four seam early, So
- 14:52Speaker 3: maybe we'll see that more as the season moves along.
- 14:54Speaker 3: If he has a little bit more velocity on the fastball,
- 14:56Speaker 3: I just think he gives him just that little extra
- 14:59Speaker 3: confidence to start with the fastball and then you can
- 15:01Speaker 3: go to all the other breaking stuff that he has.
- 15:03Speaker 3: So for me, that's all I would see with the
- 15:05Speaker 3: velocity being up a little bit is it will give
- 15:07Speaker 3: him just a little bit more to Hey, here it is,
- 15:09Speaker 3: let it rip. No one, guys aren't going to be
- 15:11Speaker 3: able to time it up early in the count and
- 15:12Speaker 3: then you can get to your nasty breaking stuff and
- 15:14Speaker 3: off speed stuff from there. So I wouldn't look into
- 15:17Speaker 3: it too much, but I think it's definitely something to
- 15:19Speaker 3: see as you go along in the summertime that maybe
- 15:22Speaker 3: he has a chance to sit in ninety six ninety
- 15:23Speaker 3: eight or somewhere in that range. And that's that obviously
- 15:27Speaker 3: anybody would take that, and it just gives you a
- 15:29Speaker 3: little bit more knowing that there's a little bit extra
- 15:30Speaker 3: in the tank when you need.
- 15:31Speaker 4: It, Brad. Someone that had a tough afternoon today was
- 15:36Speaker 4: Tyler Wells, and he got off to a rough start
- 15:39Speaker 4: to the season and then it seemed like he was
- 15:41Speaker 4: able to steady the ship. But now back to back
- 15:44Speaker 4: appearances in which he's given up runs. He's given up
- 15:47Speaker 4: runs in five of his eight outings this season. What
- 15:51Speaker 4: are you seeing at a Wells?
- 15:53Speaker 3: It just doesn't It just doesn't seem like he's moving
- 15:56Speaker 3: at full motion.
- 15:57Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 15:58Speaker 3: I don't haven't seen him enoughing know, but to me,
- 16:01Speaker 3: it just seems like it's it's not fully one percent confident,
- 16:05Speaker 3: and it's just tough to see when a guy, you know,
- 16:08Speaker 3: you want to play a big role in the team
- 16:10Speaker 3: and you're just having a tough time finding where to
- 16:13Speaker 3: fit him in this in this bullpen, and the bullpen's
- 16:16Speaker 3: is getting better by the day, and that's where it's
- 16:18Speaker 3: kind of like where the spot's going to be where
- 16:20Speaker 3: we can put Tyler in to get his confidence back,
- 16:22Speaker 3: especially when you have a lead or something like that.
- 16:24Speaker 3: So for me, it's just I want to see him
- 16:27Speaker 3: do well because the organization obviously has so much confidence
- 16:30Speaker 3: in with him, and it's just you want to see
- 16:32Speaker 3: him get on a roll of three or four score
- 16:34Speaker 3: resoundings in a role and it just seems like he
- 16:35Speaker 3: can't seem to back up outing to outing. So for me,
- 16:39Speaker 3: it's just that the today was kind of perfect example
- 16:42Speaker 3: that that basketball through for the home run, I feel
- 16:44Speaker 3: like he's either a pop up or swinging this, and
- 16:46Speaker 3: the guy was all over it today when you hit
- 16:48Speaker 3: the home run Del Castillo, So it just kind of
- 16:50Speaker 3: tells me that it's not fully getting the ride that
- 16:52Speaker 3: he gets. He's not a guy that's gonna sit ninety
- 16:54Speaker 3: seven ninety eight, so ninety four usually is enough to
- 16:56Speaker 3: get it done. And even though it's not, it wasn't
- 16:59Speaker 3: in a perfect spot. That's usually a mishit or a
- 17:01Speaker 3: foul ball, but it's he squared the guy duc THEO
- 17:05Speaker 3: squared it up today, and it just doesn't seem like
- 17:07Speaker 3: it's fully there, and his confidence just kind of seems
- 17:10Speaker 3: just a little bit off right now.
- 17:11Speaker 2: It's a little shaken.
- 17:12Speaker 3: And that's a tough spot to be in there in
- 17:14Speaker 3: the tenth in and there's just no room for error,
- 17:16Speaker 3: and you really want to see him put up a
- 17:18Speaker 3: zero there, and then of course it turns into three
- 17:20Speaker 3: runs instead of just one or two, so that's always
- 17:23Speaker 3: a tough one to throw in there also, So you
- 17:27Speaker 3: just it's you want to see him do well so bad.
- 17:30Speaker 4: Bred you obviously dealt with this towards the end of
- 17:33Speaker 4: your career, because I think it was the COVID season
- 17:35Speaker 4: when they put the ghost runner in during extra innings.
- 17:39Speaker 4: How difficult is dealing with that ghost runner as a reliever.
- 17:43Speaker 3: It's it's something you're not used to, because hardly ever
- 17:46Speaker 3: do you come in a game, especially with nobody out
- 17:49Speaker 3: in a man on second base.
- 17:49Speaker 2: It's usually multiple runners on.
- 17:52Speaker 3: But it's I only got to do it one time
- 17:54Speaker 3: and I gave up a three and walk off homer,
- 17:55Speaker 3: so I don't have the greatest experience with it. It's
- 17:57Speaker 3: actually the last pitch I ever threw in the Major League,
- 17:59Speaker 3: so not that I remember it too well.
- 18:01Speaker 2: But it's a it's uh, it's just it's it's different
- 18:04Speaker 2: than than anything before.
- 18:05Speaker 3: These guys are obviously a little bit more used to
- 18:07Speaker 3: it because it's been around for enough years. But when
- 18:10Speaker 3: I came in that first time, it's like, man, you
- 18:12Speaker 3: I mean, a single, the game's over, And how many
- 18:14Speaker 3: situations are you ever in that kind of spot when
- 18:16Speaker 3: you come on basically like a brand new inning, but
- 18:18Speaker 3: a single in the game is over. So it's it's
- 18:20Speaker 3: definitely something that I think, even for Tyler, is really
- 18:24Speaker 3: tough because being a starter, you have time to like
- 18:26Speaker 3: kind of build into these these spots.
- 18:28Speaker 2: A multi inew reliever, you give up on run.
- 18:30Speaker 3: It's not a terrible job, but it's I mean, in
- 18:33Speaker 3: this spot, you really needed that zero with the way
- 18:35Speaker 3: the game is kind of trending there, and it's you
- 18:37Speaker 3: put extra pressure on yourself and then he throws one
- 18:39Speaker 3: pitch and the guy's on third base with one out,
- 18:41Speaker 3: so now you're just even in a tougher spot. So
- 18:43Speaker 3: it's it's definitely. I think it's a multitude of things
- 18:46Speaker 3: that kind of just went on top of each other
- 18:48Speaker 3: today and then three pitches in or four pitches in,
- 18:50Speaker 3: it's too not there you're down two runs, and it's
- 18:54Speaker 3: you're even in a tougher spot.
- 18:55Speaker 7: There.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Here's what I like about Tyler Wells the post game
- 19:00Speaker 1: today sort of I'm not going to say it was
- 19:02Speaker 1: like Pete Alonzo Friday night, but there were some similarities.
- 19:06Speaker 1: And Tyler Wells is very accountable for his pitching if
- 19:09Speaker 1: he gives it up. He is a fatus locker, and
- 19:12Speaker 1: he will talk to you as much as questions as
- 19:14Speaker 1: you have. And I'm summarizing his interview today. He said,
- 19:17Speaker 1: no excuses, extremely frustrated. I want to be the guy
- 19:20Speaker 1: they can rely on. I asked to pitch in leverage situations.
- 19:25Speaker 1: This is one hundred percent my fault. I don't believe
- 19:29Speaker 1: that's true. A lot of things happen over a tenant
- 19:32Speaker 1: in game that could have changed the result. He was
- 19:34Speaker 1: only in there for one of them. But I like
- 19:36Speaker 1: the fact that he called himself out.
- 19:39Speaker 4: He's a fierce competitor. And I've always been huge on
- 19:43Speaker 4: Tyler Wells, and I was really talking him up coming
- 19:45Speaker 4: into the season. How I truly think he can be
- 19:49Speaker 4: a weapon out of this bullpen, a guy that can
- 19:51Speaker 4: go multiple innings. And if you looked at his career
- 19:54Speaker 4: splits heading into this year, he was always really good
- 19:58Speaker 4: as a starter. He was even better as a reliever.
- 20:00Speaker 4: And you can even go back to twenty twenty one
- 20:03Speaker 4: Brad where he was closing out games for the Orioles.
- 20:06Speaker 4: So he's pitched in high leverage situations in the past.
- 20:10Speaker 4: He's another guy he didn't have a true Tommy John surgery,
- 20:13Speaker 4: but he had elbow surgery much like Bradish did, and
- 20:17Speaker 4: he was able to get his feet wet at the
- 20:19Speaker 4: end of last year. So kind of trying to find
- 20:22Speaker 4: himself and work his way back from that.
- 20:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's I think that's what it is too.
- 20:26Speaker 3: And then I love guys that are accountable. I love
- 20:30Speaker 3: guys that were they'll sit there and say this is
- 20:33Speaker 3: not his fault. Everybody in that clubhouse would never sit
- 20:35Speaker 3: there and say this is ty Well's fault. But the
- 20:37Speaker 3: fact that he understands he was putting that spot to
- 20:40Speaker 3: put this game as a tie game into the bottom
- 20:42Speaker 3: of the tenth, I just think that's awesome.
- 20:44Speaker 2: I think he's going to come out of this.
- 20:46Speaker 3: You just want to see him come out of it
- 20:47Speaker 3: a little bit quicker because you just don't want to
- 20:48Speaker 3: see that confidence just keep getting shot down anytime he's
- 20:51Speaker 3: put in one of these big spots. And like you said,
- 20:53Speaker 3: he's done this before.
- 20:55Speaker 2: It's just right now.
- 20:56Speaker 3: It's sometimes guys get off to a tough, tough start
- 20:59Speaker 3: of the season and it's just hard to like the
- 21:02Speaker 3: get the ball roll in the other direction. And I
- 21:04Speaker 3: really think this bullpen needs a guy that's gonna be
- 21:06Speaker 3: able to go multiple innings, and I think Tyler Wells
- 21:09Speaker 3: is going to provide that. Like you said, Tim, I
- 21:10Speaker 3: think he's a guy you put out there in the
- 21:12Speaker 3: six and seventh like we've seen him do earlier this year,
- 21:14Speaker 3: a couple of weeks ago, and I think he's a
- 21:16Speaker 3: guy that can get really big outs and kind of
- 21:18Speaker 3: give that seventh inning guy day's rest when he needs it,
- 21:20Speaker 3: and he throws two innings and gets it to the
- 21:22Speaker 3: bridge to Hellesley there at the end. So I think
- 21:25Speaker 3: he's gonna play a big role and he's gonna come
- 21:26Speaker 3: out of this. It's just obviously tough to see that
- 21:30Speaker 3: outing today.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Offensively, Tyler Ward had a sixteen game on base straight
- 21:35Speaker 1: end in the series finalezer for five, hitting three oh one. Still,
- 21:39Speaker 1: Pete Alonzo keeps drawing walks. He's drawing eight in the
- 21:42Speaker 1: last six games. That's more than he drew in the
- 21:44Speaker 1: first twelve. That's a great sign. He's obviously seeing the
- 21:47Speaker 1: ball much better, and Jeremiah Jackson might be seeing a
- 21:50Speaker 1: beach ball when he bats. He's homern in three straight games.
- 21:53Speaker 1: He was batting four to eighty on the home stand
- 21:56Speaker 1: ops fifteen to twenty on the home stand nine nine.
- 22:00Speaker 1: He asked for the year, what's making this guy so
- 22:02Speaker 1: good right now? And how much fun is he to watch?
- 22:05Speaker 4: He's been unbelievable Steve in this stretch, And much like
- 22:08Speaker 4: we talked about yesterday morning, everyone's focusing on the offense
- 22:12Speaker 4: rightfully so, but defensively, he's playing a really strong second
- 22:16Speaker 4: base and that shouldn't go unnoticed and what's been so
- 22:21Speaker 4: interesting with Jeremiah Jackson is he was scuffling heading into
- 22:25Speaker 4: that Giant series where he was hitting two fourteen. He
- 22:28Speaker 4: didn't have a single extra base hit at that point.
- 22:32Speaker 4: But he's just been on an unbelievable tear since Friday
- 22:36Speaker 4: night against the Giants, and it is absolutely carried through
- 22:39Speaker 4: against the Diamondbacks.
- 22:41Speaker 3: Yeah, his swings this series were so impressive. I mean
- 22:44Speaker 3: that line drive today, he knew he got it from
- 22:47Speaker 3: the moment he hit it. He just had to make
- 22:48Speaker 3: sure he get over the fence if it was high
- 22:50Speaker 3: enough because he hit it so hard and so low.
- 22:53Speaker 3: But I mean that was an absolute bull. He's just
- 22:54Speaker 3: seen it really well right now. I think his swings
- 22:57Speaker 3: are really aggressive, even on balls. I notice he fouled
- 22:59Speaker 3: back like I don't want to throw that pitch again,
- 23:01Speaker 3: and Rodriguez today threw it again and he smoked it
- 23:05Speaker 3: in the that home run there and the fourth thing
- 23:07Speaker 3: I think it was, and he, like you said, Tim,
- 23:10Speaker 3: he's playing an unbelievable second base. I've been really impressed
- 23:13Speaker 3: with that part of the ball. And I didn't know
- 23:15Speaker 3: he was as good offensively as he was until this series.
- 23:17Speaker 3: Even last series and he's putting some great swings on.
- 23:20Speaker 3: He's got power for not a big guy, and it's
- 23:24Speaker 3: been really impressive to watch. To me, like I thought
- 23:25Speaker 3: he was out there as a defensive first guy, not
- 23:27Speaker 3: knowing the team, like I said as well, and this
- 23:30Speaker 3: series i'm watching him here and he's an offensive first
- 23:33Speaker 3: seeing that obviously up front. But some of the places
- 23:35Speaker 3: making the field is what are you gonna do with
- 23:37Speaker 3: this guy in a couple of weeks if they if
- 23:38Speaker 3: they have to make a move, it's you can't get
- 23:40Speaker 3: rid of him. You gotta get him out there every day.
- 23:42Speaker 3: You got to run them while he's hot, that's for sure.
- 23:43Speaker 3: I think he's got to be in the line for
- 23:44Speaker 3: every single day and be out there. He's taking good swings,
- 23:47Speaker 3: taking good at bats, he can do stuff on the
- 23:49Speaker 3: basis stuff in the field, and he's just been real
- 23:51Speaker 3: impressive to watch.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Real impressive. And even in a stat defensive run saved,
- 23:56Speaker 1: which a defensive metric that needs to use a large
- 24:00Speaker 1: to really make some sense, but in a small sample
- 24:03Speaker 1: he's among the leaders at second base in the America League.
- 24:06Speaker 1: So Jeremiah Jackson is playing better defense. There are stats
- 24:10Speaker 1: to tell you that, and what a joy he's been
- 24:13Speaker 1: to watch early season. In our final minutes, I'm gonna
- 24:16Speaker 1: touch on my visit to Frederick last night that was
- 24:18Speaker 1: so cool, and the Oriel schedule it's about to get
- 24:22Speaker 1: a little tougher. We'll touch on that coming up.

- 24:41Speaker 7: five seven the fan.
- 24:45Speaker 4: People. On Sunday, we were talking about your visit to
- 24:48Speaker 4: Booie to see the Chesapeake Bay Socks. But last night
- 24:51Speaker 4: had to be really special for you and Frederick in
- 24:55Speaker 4: general because this is that was their first home game
- 24:59Speaker 4: back at and Orioles Affiliates since prior to COVID. What
- 25:03Speaker 4: was it like being out there last night?
- 25:05Speaker 1: It was so great to tend the game got right
- 25:07Speaker 1: down at the third inning, But it wasn't about the
- 25:09Speaker 1: night on the field, really, it was about the night
- 25:11Speaker 1: in the stands in the community of Frederick, one of
- 25:14Speaker 1: the best drawing minor league towns. When they had their affiliation,
- 25:18Speaker 1: they lost. They lost the affiliation because the stadium was
- 25:22Speaker 1: just dilapidated. The player amenities were terrible and they had
- 25:25Speaker 1: to really do a massive amount of work. Maryland Stadium
- 25:28Speaker 1: Authority and the State of Maryland and the Orioles and
- 25:31Speaker 1: at teen Sports dumped about fifty million into that ballpark
- 25:35Speaker 1: and they got more to come and so big crowd
- 25:38Speaker 1: last night. Community that loves baseball has their affiliation back.
- 25:41Speaker 1: I'm so excited for Frederick. That's a good roster too.
- 25:45Speaker 1: That Keys team. I want to see how they do. Jerrowah,
- 25:47Speaker 1: who started opening night, is going to be a good pitcher.
- 25:50Speaker 1: J T. Quinn was throwing ninety nine the other night
- 25:52Speaker 1: when he struck out ten, so they got some kids
- 25:55Speaker 1: to watch. But Frederick's a wonderful community. And Kick Qualls
- 25:59Speaker 1: of the Oriels Minor League Department and the Orioles thank
- 26:02Speaker 1: you for this. By the way, they gave me my
- 26:03Speaker 1: own little private tour of this performance center last night.
- 26:07Speaker 1: It's two stories, state of the art. Batting cage is
- 26:10Speaker 1: all the data and tech you could want. The clubhouse
- 26:14Speaker 1: in Frederick, you couldn't walk through it. It was so cramped.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Now it's spacious. It almost looks big League. Michael Oas
- 26:20Speaker 1: was there last night. This was so important to the
- 26:22Speaker 1: Orioles that Elias was there. Calls were theirs. Their brass
- 26:25Speaker 1: showed up because they love what's going to happen in
- 26:28Speaker 1: Frederick and the move they've made. And Elias told me Tim.
- 26:32Speaker 1: I went up to Ike Irish and Vance Honeycutt and
- 26:35Speaker 1: I told him, I hope you guys realize this isn't normal.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Those high A teams don't have what you have, and frankly,
- 26:42Speaker 1: the Orioles feel this could be a separator, the facilities
- 26:45Speaker 1: they're creating for their minor league prospects over the next
- 26:48Speaker 1: few years.
- 26:49Speaker 4: Yeah, brit that's what I was going to ask you about.
- 26:51Speaker 4: We were talking about this on Sunday, how there's been
- 26:54Speaker 4: significant investments in Chesapeake, in del Marva, and of course
- 27:00Speaker 4: in Frederick and the Orioles. They built the state of
- 27:03Speaker 4: the art facility in Sarasota right by that stadium. You
- 27:07Speaker 4: hear all of these kind of horror stories from from
- 27:11Speaker 4: you professional ball players, like what did you experience in
- 27:15Speaker 4: the miners, Brad.
- 27:16Speaker 3: Yeah, that I would love to have those facilities you're
- 27:18Speaker 3: talking about now. It's I I was fortunate enough I
- 27:21Speaker 3: went to a small school in college, so every facility
- 27:24Speaker 3: I went to was an upgrade from what I went
- 27:25Speaker 3: to in college. But yeah, you run in some of
- 27:27Speaker 3: these towns and I've heard stories from other guys who
- 27:31Speaker 3: played at Frederick and it was a little tough back
- 27:33Speaker 3: in the day. So it's it's good to see these
- 27:35Speaker 3: guys that. I mean, a lot of teams have started doing.
- 27:38Speaker 3: I remember hearing about the Dodgers being the first ones
- 27:40Speaker 3: that started catering meals for their players and getting all
- 27:43Speaker 3: these great facilities for them. So a lot of teams
- 27:46Speaker 3: have followed suit, and there's there's only there seems to
- 27:49Speaker 3: be a couple of ways to get good players, and
- 27:50Speaker 3: that's giving good facilities, giving them good stuff to eat,
- 27:53Speaker 3: and that I mean, you're you're putting this investment in them,
- 27:56Speaker 3: so not just a monetary investment. You got to put
- 27:58Speaker 3: all these facility things in there. It's awesome to hear,
- 28:01Speaker 3: and that's really good for Berland to hear this happening
- 28:04Speaker 3: at low A High A because you know that it's
- 28:06Speaker 3: just going to get better to the further up they go,
- 28:08Speaker 3: so that's great to hear. It's great to hear what
- 28:11Speaker 3: they're doing with the minor leagues, giving these guys a
- 28:12Speaker 3: little bit more pay and obviously the facilities are just
- 28:15Speaker 3: being upgraded everywhere around every single level.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Really cool and it's going to pay off for the
- 28:20Speaker 1: Orioles over the next few years. Some of these facilities
- 28:24Speaker 1: and what these kids have, as they told me, we
- 28:26Speaker 1: want to go to work. We're so excited to go
- 28:28Speaker 1: to the ballpark to work in conditions and facilities like this. So, guys,
- 28:33Speaker 1: a couple of minutes we have left, here's what the
- 28:34Speaker 1: Oils are facing now, starting with this road trip. Four
- 28:37Speaker 1: at Cleveland, three at KC, three against Boston, three against Houston,
- 28:42Speaker 1: four at the Yankees. The next seventeen on paper, are
- 28:46Speaker 1: much tougher than the first eighteen. We're on paper, We'll
- 28:49Speaker 1: see from year to year teams change. But what are
- 28:52Speaker 1: your thoughts about the O's facing this stretch.
- 28:55Speaker 4: Well, just looking at this upcoming series, Steve, it feels
- 29:00Speaker 4: they've really struggled against the Guardians, and in particular in Cleveland.
- 29:04Speaker 4: You can go back to twenty twenty three when they
- 29:06Speaker 4: won over one hundred games. They're five and seven in
- 29:09Speaker 4: their twelve games that they played in Cleveland. That's just
- 29:13Speaker 4: always a scrappy ball club man. As Steven vote back
- 29:16Speaker 4: to back manager of the year. People thought maybe they
- 29:20Speaker 4: would fall off this year. They're off to a really
- 29:22Speaker 4: strong start, but they have lost three of four heading
- 29:26Speaker 4: into their series against the O's. But yeah, the schedule
- 29:29Speaker 4: definitely turns up moving forward. Brett.
- 29:33Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think it's one of those things you
- 29:34Speaker 3: want to it's a good test. I think they'd have
- 29:36Speaker 3: enough games under their belt, they see what they need
- 29:39Speaker 3: to improve, and they really need to dive into their strengths.
- 29:42Speaker 2: And I think Cleveland's a perfect example.
- 29:45Speaker 3: You gotta go there, you gotta pitch, you gotta play defense,
- 29:47Speaker 3: and you got to have timely hitting. It's what Cleveland
- 29:51Speaker 3: and the Guardians have done for I swear ten fifteen
- 29:53Speaker 3: years at this point. Every time they are they're written off,
- 29:57Speaker 3: and every time they're at the top of their division.
- 29:59Speaker 3: So it's going into Cleveland is always a tough place
- 30:01Speaker 3: to play, and you know they're going to pitch. That's
- 30:03Speaker 3: the one thing you know they're gonna do above and foremost.
- 30:06Speaker 2: When you go into Cleveland.
- 30:07Speaker 4: And you have to think that there's this series means
- 30:11Speaker 4: a little bit more for Craig albern As going back home, right.
- 30:15Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely.
- 30:16Speaker 3: I think when you get your first job you're going
- 30:18Speaker 3: back to the team you were just with, you got
- 30:20Speaker 3: you got a bunch of friends over there. But you
- 30:22Speaker 3: want to show up when you go somewhere you've just been,
- 30:24Speaker 3: Especially he was just there last season, so he wants
- 30:26Speaker 3: to show up when they get there.
- 30:29Speaker 1: That'll be a big storyline all series, but especially opening night.
- 30:33Speaker 1: You know, Albert has a bit besieged by Cleveland media,
- 30:35Speaker 1: and he and Steven Voter are so close. They really
- 30:38Speaker 1: have a special relationship. And I think it was so
- 30:40Speaker 1: cool to see Steven Vote a major league manager at
- 30:43Speaker 1: his press conference in Baltimore. He came all the way
- 30:46Speaker 1: for that, sat in the front row, and did interviews
- 30:49Speaker 1: with all of us afterwards. It could have been nicer.
- 30:51Speaker 1: So it's clear that albert As has had some good
- 30:54Speaker 1: tutelage along the way, and Steven votes probably at the
- 30:57Speaker 1: top of that list. It's going to be fun, guys.
- 30:59Speaker 1: It'll be a challenging stretch for the Oriels. It starts
- 31:02Speaker 1: in Cleveland with four on Thursday night. So guys, we'll
- 31:05Speaker 1: talk again in a couple of days. Rest up and
- 31:09Speaker 1: make your notes and be ready for more Birdland territory
- 31:12Speaker 1: coming up in a couple of days.
- 31:14Speaker 2: Looking forward to it for.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Tim, Barbara Lace and Brad Brock. I'm Steve Maleski, will
- 31:18Speaker 1: catch you next time on Birdland Territory
