Speaker 1: Chapter ten, He is left on shore. I was very
• 0:04
Speaker 1: angry with my nephew, the captain, and indeed with all
• 0:08
Speaker 1: the men, but with him in particular as well, for
• 0:10
Speaker 1: his acting so out of his duty as a commander
• 0:13
Speaker 1: of the ship, and having the charge of the voyage
• 0:16
Speaker 1: upon him, as in his prompting rather than cooling the
• 0:19
Speaker 1: rage of his blind men in so bloody and cruel
• 0:22
Speaker 1: an enterprise. My nephew answered me very respectfully, but told
• 0:26
Speaker 1: me that when he saw the body of the poor
• 0:28
Speaker 1: seamen whom they had murdered in so cruel and barbarous
• 0:32
Speaker 1: a manner, he was not master of himself, neither could
• 0:35
Speaker 1: he govern his passion. He owned he should not have
• 0:38
Speaker 1: done so, as he was commander of the ship, but
• 0:41
Speaker 1: as he was a man and nature moved him, he
• 0:44
Speaker 1: could not bear it. As for the rest of the men,
• 0:47
Speaker 1: they were not subject to me at all, and they
• 0:49
Speaker 1: knew it well enough, so they took no notice of
• 0:52
Speaker 1: my dislike. The next day we set sail, so we
• 0:55
Speaker 1: never heard any more of it. Our men differed in
• 0:58
Speaker 1: the account of the number they had killed, but according
• 1:01
Speaker 1: to the best of their accounts, put all together, they
• 1:04
Speaker 1: killed or destroyed about one hundred and fifty people, men,
• 1:08
Speaker 1: women and children, and left not a house standing in
• 1:11
Speaker 1: the town. As for the poor fellow Tom Jeffrey, as
• 1:15
Speaker 1: he was quite dead, for his throat was so cut
• 1:18
Speaker 1: that his head was half off, it would do him
• 1:20
Speaker 1: no service to bring him away, so they only took
• 1:23
Speaker 1: him down from the tree where he was hanging by
• 1:25
Speaker 1: one hand. However, just our men thought this action, I
• 1:30
Speaker 1: was against them in it, and I always after that
• 1:32
Speaker 1: time told them God would blast the voyage, for I
• 1:36
Speaker 1: looked upon all the blood they shed that night to
• 1:38
Speaker 1: be murder in them. For though it is true that
• 1:41
Speaker 1: they had killed Tom Jeffrey, yet Jeffrey was the aggressor,
• 1:45
Speaker 1: had broken the truce, and had ill used a young
• 1:47
Speaker 1: woman of theirs who came down to them innocently and
• 1:51
Speaker 1: on the faith of the public capitulation. The Bosun defended
• 1:55
Speaker 1: this quarrel when we were afterwards on board. He said
• 1:59
Speaker 1: it was true that we seemed to break the truce,
• 2:01
Speaker 1: but really had not, and that the war was begun
• 2:04
Speaker 1: the night before by the natives themselves, who had shot
• 2:07
Speaker 1: at us and killed one of our men without any
• 2:10
Speaker 1: just provocation, So that as we were in a capacity
• 2:13
Speaker 1: to fight them, now we might also be in a
• 2:16
Speaker 1: capacity to do ourselves justice upon them in an extraordinary manner,
• 2:20
Speaker 1: that though the poor man had taken a little liberty
• 2:23
Speaker 1: with the girl, he ought not to have been murdered,
• 2:26
Speaker 1: and that in such a villainous manner, and that they
• 2:29
Speaker 1: did nothing but what was just and what the laws
• 2:31
Speaker 1: of God allowed to be done to murderers. One would
• 2:34
Speaker 1: think this should have been enough to have warned us
• 2:36
Speaker 1: against going on shore amongst the heathens and barbarians. But
• 2:40
Speaker 1: it is impossible to make mankind wise but at their
• 2:43
Speaker 1: own expense, and their experience seems to be always of
• 2:47
Speaker 1: most use to them when it is dearest bought. We
• 2:51
Speaker 1: were now bound to the Gulf of Persia, and from
• 2:54
Speaker 1: thence to the coast of Coromandel, only to touch at Surat.
• 2:58
Speaker 1: But the chief of the super cargo's design lay at
• 3:01
Speaker 1: the Bay of Bengal, where if he missed his business
• 3:04
Speaker 1: outward bound, he was to go out to China and
• 3:07
Speaker 1: return to the coast as he came home. The first
• 3:10
Speaker 1: disaster that befell Us was in the Gulf of Persia,
• 3:13
Speaker 1: where five of our men venturing on shore on the
• 3:16
Speaker 1: Arabian side of the gulf were surrounded by the Arabians
• 3:20
Speaker 1: and either all killed or carried away into slavery. The
• 3:24
Speaker 1: rest of the boat's crew were not able to rescue them,
• 3:27
Speaker 1: and had but just time to get off their boat.
• 3:30
Speaker 1: I began to upbraid them with the just retribution of
• 3:33
Speaker 1: Heaven in this case, but the Bosun very warmly told
• 3:36
Speaker 1: me he thought I went further in my censures than
• 3:39
Speaker 1: I could show any warrant for in scripture, and referred
• 3:42
Speaker 1: to Luke thirteen four, where our Savior intimates that those
• 3:46
Speaker 1: men on whom the tower of Siloam fell were not
• 3:49
Speaker 1: sinners above all the Galileans. But that which put me
• 3:52
Speaker 1: to silence in the case was that not one of
• 3:54
Speaker 1: these five men who were now lost were of those
• 3:57
Speaker 1: who went on shore to the massacre of Madaga. So
• 4:01
Speaker 1: I always called it, though our men could not bear
• 4:04
Speaker 1: to hear the word massacre with any patience. But my
• 4:08
Speaker 1: frequent preaching to them on this subject had worse consequences
• 4:11
Speaker 1: than I expected, and the Bosun, who had been the
• 4:14
Speaker 1: head of the attempt, came up boldly to me one
• 4:17
Speaker 1: time and told me he found that I brought that
• 4:20
Speaker 1: affair continually upon the stage, that I made unjust reflections
• 4:24
Speaker 1: upon it, and had used the men very ill on
• 4:26
Speaker 1: that account, and himself in particular, that as I was
• 4:30
Speaker 1: but a passenger and had no command in the ship
• 4:33
Speaker 1: or concern in the voyage, they were not obliged to
• 4:36
Speaker 1: bear it that they did not know, but I might
• 4:39
Speaker 1: have some ill design in my head, and perhaps to
• 4:42
Speaker 1: call them to an account for it when they came
• 4:44
Speaker 1: to England. And that therefore, unless I would resolve to
• 4:48
Speaker 1: have done with it, and also not to concern myself
• 4:51
Speaker 1: any further with him or any of his affairs, he
• 4:54
Speaker 1: would leave the ship, for he did not think it
• 4:56
Speaker 1: safe to sail with me among them. I heard him
• 4:59
Speaker 1: payatiently enough till he had done, and then told him
• 5:03
Speaker 1: that I confessed I had all along opposed the massacre
• 5:06
Speaker 1: of Madagascar, and that I had on all occasions spoken
• 5:10
Speaker 1: my mind freely about it, though not more upon him
• 5:13
Speaker 1: than any of the rest. That as to having no
• 5:16
Speaker 1: command in the ship, that was true, nor did I
• 5:19
Speaker 1: exercise any authority, only took the liberty of speaking my
• 5:22
Speaker 1: mind in things which publicly concerned us all and what
• 5:26
Speaker 1: concern I had in the voyage was none of his business.
• 5:29
Speaker 1: That I was a considerable owner in the ship. In
• 5:32
Speaker 1: that claim, I conceived I had a right to speak
• 5:35
Speaker 1: even further than I had done, and would not be
• 5:37
Speaker 1: accountable to him or any one else, and began to
• 5:41
Speaker 1: be a little warm with him. He made but little
• 5:44
Speaker 1: reply to me at that time, and I thought the
• 5:46
Speaker 1: affair had been over. We were at this time in
• 5:49
Speaker 1: the road at Bengal, and being willing to see the place,
• 5:52
Speaker 1: I went on shore with the supercargo in the ship's
• 5:55
Speaker 1: boat to divert myself, and towards evening was preparing to
• 5:58
Speaker 1: go on board, when one of the men came to
• 6:01
Speaker 1: me and told me he would not have me trouble
• 6:03
Speaker 1: myself to come down to the boat, for they had
• 6:06
Speaker 1: orders not to carry me on board any more. Any
• 6:09
Speaker 1: One may guess what a surprise I was in at
• 6:11
Speaker 1: so insolent a message, and I asked the man who
• 6:14
Speaker 1: bade him deliver that message to me. He told me
• 6:17
Speaker 1: the coxswain. I immediately found out the supercargo and told
• 6:22
Speaker 1: him the story, adding that I foresaw there would be
• 6:25
Speaker 1: a mutiny in the ship, and entreated him to go
• 6:28
Speaker 1: immediately on board and acquaint the captain of it. But
• 6:31
Speaker 1: I might have spared this intelligence, for before I had
• 6:34
Speaker 1: spoken to him on shore. The matter was effected on
• 6:37
Speaker 1: board the bosun, the gunner, the carpenter, and all the
• 6:41
Speaker 1: inferior officers. As soon as I was gone off in
• 6:44
Speaker 1: the boat, came up and desired to speak with the captain,
• 6:47
Speaker 1: and then the Bosain, making a long harangue, and repeating
• 6:51
Speaker 1: all he had said to me, told the Captain that
• 6:53
Speaker 1: as I was now gone peaceably on shore, they were
• 6:56
Speaker 1: loath to use any violence with me, which if I
• 6:59
Speaker 1: had not gone on shore, they would otherwise have done
• 7:03
Speaker 1: to oblige me to have gone. They therefore thought fit
• 7:06
Speaker 1: to tell him that as they shipped themselves to serve
• 7:09
Speaker 1: in the ship under his command, they would perform it
• 7:12
Speaker 1: well and faithfully. But if I would not quit the ship,
• 7:15
Speaker 1: or the Captain obliged me to quit it, they would
• 7:17
Speaker 1: all leave the ship and sail no further with him.
• 7:20
Speaker 1: And at that word all he turned his face towards
• 7:24
Speaker 1: the mainmast, which was it seems, a signal agreed on.
• 7:28
Speaker 1: When the seamen being got together, there cried out one
• 7:31
Speaker 1: and all, one and all, my nephew. The captain was
• 7:35
Speaker 1: a man of spirit and of great presence of mind.
• 7:38
Speaker 1: And though he was surprised. Yet he told them calmly
• 7:41
Speaker 1: that he would consider of the matter, but that he
• 7:44
Speaker 1: could do nothing in it till he had spoken to
• 7:46
Speaker 1: me about it. He used some arguments with them to
• 7:50
Speaker 1: show them the unreasonableness and injustice of the thing, but
• 7:53
Speaker 1: it was all in vain. They swore and shook hands
• 7:57
Speaker 1: round before his face, that they would all go on
• 7:59
Speaker 1: shore unless he would engage to them not to suffer
• 8:02
Speaker 1: me to come any more on board the ship. This
• 8:05
Speaker 1: was a hard article upon him, who knew his obligation
• 8:08
Speaker 1: to me and did not know how I might take it.
• 8:11
Speaker 1: So he began to talk smartly to them, told them
• 8:14
Speaker 1: that I was a very considerable owner of the ship,
• 8:17
Speaker 1: and that if ever they came to England again, it
• 8:20
Speaker 1: would cost them very dear, that the ship was mine,
• 8:23
Speaker 1: and that he could not put me out of it,
• 8:25
Speaker 1: and that he would rather lose the ship and the
• 8:28
Speaker 1: voyage too than disoblige me so much, so they might
• 8:32
Speaker 1: do as they pleased. However, he would go on shore
• 8:35
Speaker 1: and talk with me, and invited the boatswun to go
• 8:38
Speaker 1: with him, and perhaps they might accommodate the matter with me.
• 8:42
Speaker 1: But they all rejected the proposal and said they would
• 8:45
Speaker 1: have nothing to do with me any more, and if
• 8:47
Speaker 1: I came on board, they would all go on shore. Well,
• 8:51
Speaker 1: said the captain, if you are all of this mind,
• 8:53
Speaker 1: let me go on shore and talk with him. So
• 8:56
Speaker 1: away he came to me with this account a little
• 8:58
Speaker 1: after the message had brought to me from the Coxswain.
• 9:02
Speaker 1: I was very glad to see my nephew, I must confess,
• 9:06
Speaker 1: for I was not without apprehensions that they would confine
• 9:09
Speaker 1: him by violence, set sail and run away with the ship.
• 9:13
Speaker 1: And then I had been stripped naked in a remote country,
• 9:16
Speaker 1: having nothing to help myself. In short, I had been
• 9:19
Speaker 1: in a worse case than when I was alone in
• 9:21
Speaker 1: the island. But they had not come to that length,
• 9:24
Speaker 1: it seems to my satisfaction. And when my nephew told
• 9:28
Speaker 1: me what they had said to him, and how they
• 9:30
Speaker 1: had sworn and shook hands, that they would one and
• 9:33
Speaker 1: all leave the ship if I was suffered to come
• 9:35
Speaker 1: on board, I told him he should not be concerned
• 9:38
Speaker 1: at it at all, for I would stay on shore.
• 9:41
Speaker 1: I only desired he would take care and send me
• 9:44
Speaker 1: all my necessary things on shore, and leave me a
• 9:47
Speaker 1: sufficient sum of money, and I would find my way
• 9:50
Speaker 1: to England as well as I could. This was a
• 9:52
Speaker 1: heavy piece of news to my nephew, but there was
• 9:55
Speaker 1: no way to help it but to comply. So in short,
• 9:58
Speaker 1: he went on board the ship again and satisfied the
• 10:01
Speaker 1: men that his uncle had yielded to their importunity and
• 10:05
Speaker 1: had sent for his goods from on board the ship,
• 10:07
Speaker 1: so that the matter was over. In a few hours,
• 10:10
Speaker 1: the men returned to their duty, and I began to
• 10:13
Speaker 1: consider what course I should steer. I was now alone
• 10:17
Speaker 1: in a most remote part of the world, for I
• 10:20
Speaker 1: was near three thousand leagues by sea, farther off from
• 10:23
Speaker 1: England than I was at my island. Only it is true,
• 10:27
Speaker 1: I might travel here by land over the Great Mogul's
• 10:30
Speaker 1: country to Surat, might go from Thence to Bassora by
• 10:33
Speaker 1: sea up the Gulf of Persia, and take the way
• 10:36
Speaker 1: of the caravans over the desert of Arabia to Aleppo
• 10:40
Speaker 1: and Scanderoon. From Thence by sea again to Italy, and
• 10:44
Speaker 1: so overland and to France. I had another way before me,
• 10:48
Speaker 1: which was to wait for some English ships which were
• 10:51
Speaker 1: coming to Bangulf from Aquin on the island of Sumatra,
• 10:54
Speaker 1: and get passage on board them. From England. But as
• 10:58
Speaker 1: I came hither without any concern of the East Indian Company,
• 11:01
Speaker 1: so it would be difficult to go from Hence without
• 11:04
Speaker 1: their license, unless with great favor of the captains of
• 11:07
Speaker 1: the ships or the company's factors, and to both I
• 11:11
Speaker 1: was an utter stranger. Here I had the mortification to
• 11:15
Speaker 1: see the ship set sail without me. However, my nephew
• 11:18
Speaker 1: left me two servants, or rather one companion and one servant.
• 11:22
Speaker 1: The first was clerk to the purser, whom he engaged
• 11:25
Speaker 1: to go with me, and the other was his own servant.
• 11:29
Speaker 1: I then took a good lodging in the house of
• 11:31
Speaker 1: an englishwoman, where several merchants lodged, some French, two Italians,
• 11:36
Speaker 1: or rather Jews, and one Englishman. Here I stayed above
• 11:39
Speaker 1: nine months, considering what course to take. I had some
• 11:43
Speaker 1: English goods with me of value and a considerable sum
• 11:46
Speaker 1: of money, my nephew furnishing me with a thousand pieces
• 11:50
Speaker 1: of eight and a letter of credit for more. If
• 11:52
Speaker 1: I had occasion that I might not be straightened whatever
• 11:56
Speaker 1: might happen, I quickly disposed of my goods to advantage,
• 12:00
Speaker 1: and as I originally intended, I bought here some very
• 12:03
Speaker 1: good diamonds, which of all other things, were the most
• 12:07
Speaker 1: proper for me in my present circumstances, because I could
• 12:10
Speaker 1: always carry my whole estate about me. During my stay here,
• 12:14
Speaker 1: many proposals were made for my return to England, but
• 12:18
Speaker 1: none falling out to my mind. The English merchant, who
• 12:21
Speaker 1: lodged with me and whom I had contracted an intimate
• 12:24
Speaker 1: acquaintance with, came to me one morning saying, countrymen, I
• 12:28
Speaker 1: have a project to communicate, which, as it suits with
• 12:31
Speaker 1: my thoughts, may for aught, I know suit with yours
• 12:34
Speaker 1: also when you shall have thoroughly considered it. Here we
• 12:38
Speaker 1: are posted you by accident, and I by my own choice,
• 12:41
Speaker 1: in a part of the world very remote from our
• 12:44
Speaker 1: own country. But it is in a country where by
• 12:47
Speaker 1: us who understand trade and business, a great deal of
• 12:50
Speaker 1: money is to be got. If you will put one
• 12:53
Speaker 1: thousand pounds to my one thousand pounds, we will hire
• 12:56
Speaker 1: a ship here the first we can get to our minds.
• 12:59
Speaker 1: You shall be captain, I'll be merchant, and we'll go
• 13:02
Speaker 1: a trading voyage to China. For what should we stand still?
• 13:06
Speaker 1: For the whole world is in motion? Why should we
• 13:09
Speaker 1: be idle? I liked this proposal very well, and the
• 13:13
Speaker 1: more so because it seemed to be expressed with so
• 13:15
Speaker 1: much good will. In my loose, unhinged circumstances, I was
• 13:20
Speaker 1: the fitter to embrace a proposal for trade, or indeed
• 13:23
Speaker 1: anything else. I might perhaps say with some truth that
• 13:27
Speaker 1: if trade was not my element, rambling was, and no
• 13:30
Speaker 1: proposal for seeing any part of the world which I
• 13:33
Speaker 1: had never seen before could possibly come amiss to me.
• 13:37
Speaker 1: It was, however, some time before we could get a
• 13:39
Speaker 1: ship to our minds, and when we had got a vessel,
• 13:42
Speaker 1: it was not easy to get English sailors, that is
• 13:45
Speaker 1: to say so many as were necessary to govern the
• 13:48
Speaker 1: voyage and manage the sailors which we should pick up.
• 13:51
Speaker 1: There After, some time we got a mate, a bosun,
• 13:54
Speaker 1: and a gunner English, a Dutch carpenter, and three foremast men.
• 13:58
Speaker 1: With these we found we could do well enough having
• 14:01
Speaker 1: Indian seamen such as they were, to make up. When
• 14:05
Speaker 1: all was ready, we set sail for Aquin in the
• 14:08
Speaker 1: island of Sumatra, and from thence to Siam, where we
• 14:11
Speaker 1: exchanged some of our wares for opium and some arak,
• 14:15
Speaker 1: the first a commodity which bears a great price among
• 14:18
Speaker 1: the Chinese, and which at that time was much wanted there.
• 14:22
Speaker 1: Then we went up to Saskan, where eight months out
• 14:24
Speaker 1: and on our return to Bengal, I was very well
• 14:27
Speaker 1: satisfied with my adventure. Our people in England often admire
• 14:31
Speaker 1: how officers which the company send into India and the
• 14:35
Speaker 1: merchants which generally stay there, get such very great estates
• 14:38
Speaker 1: as they do, and sometimes come home worth sixty or
• 14:42
Speaker 1: seventy thousand pounds at a time. But it is little
• 14:45
Speaker 1: matter for wonder when we consider the innumerable ports and
• 14:48
Speaker 1: places where they have a free commerce. Indeed, at the
• 14:51
Speaker 1: ports where the English ships come, there is such great
• 14:54
Speaker 1: and constant demands for the growth of all other countries,
• 14:58
Speaker 1: that there is a certain vent for return turns, as
• 15:00
Speaker 1: well as a market abroad for the goods carried out.
• 15:04
Speaker 1: I got so much money by my first adventure, and
• 15:07
Speaker 1: such an insight into the method of getting more, that
• 15:10
Speaker 1: had I been twenty years younger, I should have been
• 15:13
Speaker 1: tempted to have stayed here and sought no farther for
• 15:16
Speaker 1: making my fortune. But what was all this to a
• 15:19
Speaker 1: man upwards of three score that was rich enough and
• 15:23
Speaker 1: came abroad more in obedience to a restless desire of
• 15:26
Speaker 1: seeing the world than a covetous desire of gaining by it.
• 15:29
Speaker 1: A restless desire it really was, For when I was
• 15:33
Speaker 1: at home, I was restless to go abroad, and when
• 15:35
Speaker 1: I was abroad, I was restless to be at home.
• 15:38
Speaker 1: I say, what was this gain to me? I was
• 15:41
Speaker 1: rich enough already, nor had I any uneasy desires of
• 15:45
Speaker 1: getting more money. Therefore the profit of the voyage to
• 15:48
Speaker 1: me was of no great force for the prompting me
• 15:51
Speaker 1: forward to further undertakings. Hence I thought that by this
• 15:54
Speaker 1: voyage I had made no progress at all, because I
• 15:57
Speaker 1: was come back, as I might call it, to the
• 16:00
Speaker 1: place from whence I came as to a home. Whereas
• 16:03
Speaker 1: my eye, like that which Solomon speaks of, was never
• 16:06
Speaker 1: satisfied with seeing, I was come into a part of
• 16:10
Speaker 1: the world which I was never in before, and that part,
• 16:13
Speaker 1: in particular, which I heard much of, and was resolved
• 16:17
Speaker 1: to see as much of it as I could. And
• 16:19
Speaker 1: then I thought I might say I had seen all
• 16:22
Speaker 1: the world that was worth seeing. But my fellow traveler
• 16:26
Speaker 1: and I had different notions. I acknowledge his were the
• 16:29
Speaker 1: more suited to the end of a merchant's life, who
• 16:32
Speaker 1: when he is abroad upon adventures, is wise to stick
• 16:35
Speaker 1: to that as the best thing for him, which he
• 16:37
Speaker 1: is likely to get the most money by. On the
• 16:40
Speaker 1: other hand, mine was the notion of a mad rambling
• 16:43
Speaker 1: boy that never cares to see a thing twice over.
• 16:46
Speaker 1: But this was not all. I had a kind of
• 16:49
Speaker 1: impatience upon me to be nearer home, and yet an
• 16:52
Speaker 1: unsettled resolution which way to go. In the interval of
• 16:55
Speaker 1: these consultations, my friend, who was always upon the search
• 16:59
Speaker 1: for business, proposed another voyage among the Spice islands to
• 17:03
Speaker 1: bring home a loading of clothes from the Manilas or thereabouts.
• 17:08
Speaker 1: We were not long in preparing for this voyage. The
• 17:11
Speaker 1: chief difficulty was in bringing me to come into it. However,
• 17:15
Speaker 1: at last nothing else offering, and as sitting still to
• 17:19
Speaker 1: me especially was the unhappiest part of life, I resolved
• 17:23
Speaker 1: on this voyage too, which we made very successfully, touching
• 17:27
Speaker 1: at Borneo and several other islands, and came home in
• 17:30
Speaker 1: about five months, when we sold our spices with very
• 17:34
Speaker 1: great profit to the Persian merchants who carried them away
• 17:38
Speaker 1: to the Gulf. My friend, when we made up this account,
• 17:41
Speaker 1: smiled at me. Well, now, said he, with a sort
• 17:44
Speaker 1: of friendly rebuke on my indolent temper. Is not this
• 17:48
Speaker 1: better than walking about here like a man with nothing
• 17:51
Speaker 1: to do, and spending our time in staring at the
• 17:54
Speaker 1: nonsense and ignorance of the pagans, Why, truly, said I,
• 17:58
Speaker 1: my friend. I think it is, and I begin to
• 18:01
Speaker 1: be a convert to the principles of merchandising. But I
• 18:04
Speaker 1: must tell you, by the way, you do not know
• 18:07
Speaker 1: what I am doing. For if I once conquer my
• 18:09
Speaker 1: backwardness and embark heartily old as I am, I shall
• 18:13
Speaker 1: harass you up and down the world till I tire you.
• 18:17
Speaker 1: For I shall pursue it so eagerly I shall never
• 18:19
Speaker 1: let you lie still. End of Chapter ten.
