Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 2: This is the podcast.
- 0:09Speaker 1: It comes after the podcast. Welcome to Disgraceland, the after Party.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode, a little thing we
- 0:31Speaker 2: like to call the after party. This is the show
- 0:34Speaker 2: after the show, the party after the party. The bridge
- 0:37Speaker 2: to get you from one full episode of Disgraceland to
- 0:39Speaker 2: the other. The backyard, to dig into the dirt, our
- 0:43Speaker 2: mission to uncover the truth, to confront the myth, to
- 0:46Speaker 2: reclaim the story. On this bonus episode, the person that
- 0:50Speaker 2: you expected to be here behind the mic talking to
- 0:54Speaker 2: all of you beautiful people out there. The man, the myth,
- 0:56Speaker 2: the legend, Jake Brennan. Jake is stuck. Man. He's at
- 0:59Speaker 2: the airport, He's at the terminal. He's hanging on the telephone,
- 1:03Speaker 2: flight after flight canceled. And so just like he is
- 1:06Speaker 2: stuck in aviation purgatory, so too, you are stuck with
- 1:09Speaker 2: me today the good doctor, doctor Lundy, talking about extreme
- 1:13Speaker 2: music and extreme moments from music history. Plus we've got
- 1:17Speaker 2: a brand new spanked episode of this film should be
- 1:20Speaker 2: played loud to talk about all right, discos, let's get
- 1:24Speaker 2: into it. It's true, guys, this is a first. The
- 1:36Speaker 2: after party will not be hosted by Jake as usual today.
- 1:40Speaker 2: This is not a drill. This ain't no prank. I'm
- 1:43Speaker 2: not fool in, as Def Leppard would say, I was
- 1:47Speaker 2: absolutely telling you the truth earlier. Typically, the way this
- 1:51Speaker 2: works is that Jake writes and records these after party
- 1:55Speaker 2: episodes on Wednesdays. He and I taped the exclusive all
- 1:58Speaker 2: access portion on Wednesday Day as well, and then of
- 2:01Speaker 2: course they're released into the wild on Thursdays. But Jake
- 2:05Speaker 2: called me on Tuesday afternoon this week. He's been traveling
- 2:08Speaker 2: with his family, and he called me to say that
- 2:11Speaker 2: his flight home that night had been canceled, and by
- 2:14Speaker 2: the time his rescheduled flight got him back on the
- 2:17Speaker 2: saddle the next day, he wouldn't have enough time to
- 2:19Speaker 2: write and record the after party. So here we are.
- 2:23Speaker 2: I'm like, you know, Elvis Costello when he used to
- 2:26Speaker 2: guest host for Letterman when Letterman went on vacation, and
- 2:30Speaker 2: I'm psyched to be here. Actually, you know, I really
- 2:33Speaker 2: am talking with all of you discos because you guys
- 2:36Speaker 2: are the best. You know that, and I know that
- 2:38Speaker 2: a lot of you are already probably familiar with my
- 2:40Speaker 2: voice since I host the rap party over in our
- 2:43Speaker 2: sister show, Hollywood Land. But all that said, thanks for
- 2:46Speaker 2: bearing with us here. And you know, like Steve Winwood
- 2:49Speaker 2: once said, you got to roll with it. Speaking of
- 2:51Speaker 2: roll with it, that's a song that the band Slipknot
- 2:54Speaker 2: would likely never cover. Well, I don't know, never say never.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Did you guys know that? Way back in the day,
- 3:01Speaker 2: way back in the early days of Slipknot, they covered
- 3:05Speaker 2: the Humpty Dance by Digital Underground. Hell yeah, man, my
- 3:09Speaker 2: name is Humpty pronounced with an umpty. How I'd like
- 3:13Speaker 2: to funk? The slip Knot definitely one of the most
- 3:17Speaker 2: extreme sounding bands we've ever covered here in Disgraceland. I
- 3:22Speaker 2: was thinking about the other bands and artists that we've
- 3:25Speaker 2: covered that are in a similar extreme sounding zone. There's
- 3:30Speaker 2: Mayhem and Bursham and all the bands at the center
- 3:33Speaker 2: of the Norwegian black metal scene that we covered way
- 3:36Speaker 2: back in season one. There's gg Allen we covered him
- 3:39Speaker 2: in season two. Pantera and the Murder of Dimebag Darryl
- 3:44Speaker 2: Metallica early Metallica, which features in our story about the
- 3:48Speaker 2: tragic death of their original bassist Cliff Burton Pentagram perhaps,
- 3:53Speaker 2: but of course, in the case of slip Knot, their
- 3:56Speaker 2: music has been accused of being so extreme that it
- 4:01Speaker 2: led in one case, to murder. Back in two thousand
- 4:04Speaker 2: and three, in sam Bernardino, California, twenty two year old
- 4:08Speaker 2: Terry Ray Taylor was brewly murdered by a twenty year
- 4:12Speaker 2: old and a sixteen year old who said that they
- 4:14Speaker 2: had been listening to Slipknot immediately before and after the murder,
- 4:19Speaker 2: specifically the song Disaster Piece, which was analyzed by authorities
- 4:25Speaker 2: as this case went to trial. I'm not going to
- 4:28Speaker 2: burn this story here. You can hear all about it
- 4:30Speaker 2: in our new episode on Slipknot that just hit your
- 4:33Speaker 2: feed this week on Tuesday. It's right behind this episode
- 4:36Speaker 2: if you haven't listened to it yet. And as I
- 4:38Speaker 2: know you guys know, this, of course isn't the first
- 4:41Speaker 2: time that music, rock and roll, heavy metal, whatever you
- 4:44Speaker 2: want to call it, has been put in the hot
- 4:47Speaker 2: seat when something truly bad happens. We've covered a lot
- 4:51Speaker 2: of these stories here, as you guys know, but here
- 4:53Speaker 2: are some of the most disgraceful instances of music being
- 4:57Speaker 2: blamed for extreme violence. In nineteen eighty five, two teenagers
- 5:02Speaker 2: in Nevada entered a suicide pact. One died, the other
- 5:06Speaker 2: one sustained severe injuries. Their families later sued Judas Priest,
- 5:11Speaker 2: claiming that the band had purposefully inserted the phrase do
- 5:14Speaker 2: it into their song better by You, Better by Me.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Also in nineteen eighty five, the family of a nineteen
- 5:21Speaker 2: year old Indio, California boy who had taken his own
- 5:24Speaker 2: life the year prior, sued Ozzy Osbourne, alleging that the
- 5:28Speaker 2: tragedy happened after he listened to Ozzie's Son Suicide Solution.
- 5:34Speaker 2: In two thousand, the parents of a fifteen year old
- 5:37Speaker 2: girl who had been murdered a few years prior by
- 5:40Speaker 2: a group of teenage boys sued Slayer, claiming that the
- 5:44Speaker 2: band's music had inspired the killing. And then there's all
- 5:47Speaker 2: the stuff with the Beatles and Charles Manson, the Helter
- 5:51Speaker 2: Skelter thing, the party line about Manson being inspired by
- 5:55Speaker 2: the White album to start a race war. There's ACDC
- 5:58Speaker 2: and the night Stalker Richard Ramirez, a fan of the band,
- 6:02Speaker 2: and the ACDC hat left behind at one of the
- 6:04Speaker 2: crime scenes, and how the band was blamed in the press.
- 6:08Speaker 2: For inspiring that killing spree. Heavy music. Extreme music always
- 6:14Speaker 2: had this stigma attached to it. When I was growing
- 6:18Speaker 2: up back in the nineteen eighties, you didn't fuck with
- 6:20Speaker 2: the dudes who listened to Priest or Slayer or early Metallica. Okay,
- 6:25Speaker 2: they wore jean jackets and they grew peach fuzz mustaches.
- 6:30Speaker 2: You crossed the street when they were coming your way.
- 6:33Speaker 2: They were these social outcasts who were into weird shit,
- 6:37Speaker 2: extreme shit, or so went the thinking. It's really fucked
- 6:41Speaker 2: up to me, you know. Once I grew up and
- 6:44Speaker 2: realized that the stigma what I believed about extreme music people,
- 6:50Speaker 2: for lack of a better term, it was fabricated by
- 6:54Speaker 2: so called polite society, you know, and then the flames
- 6:57Speaker 2: were fanned by the media to turn us against the
- 7:00Speaker 2: kind of music that again so called polite society found offensive.
- 7:06Speaker 2: The same thing would happen with hip hop as well,
- 7:09Speaker 2: though by that time I was catching on and figuring
- 7:11Speaker 2: the shit out.
- 7:11Speaker 3: You know.
- 7:12Speaker 2: It's also funny to get older and to discover that
- 7:15Speaker 2: the metal community or the hardcore community, these subcultures of
- 7:18Speaker 2: quote unquote extreme music were actually full of some of
- 7:22Speaker 2: the nicest people, people who were not at all what
- 7:25Speaker 2: they appeared to be to kids like me, extremely uncool
- 7:30Speaker 2: kids who were blasting Huey Lewis and John Mellencamp and
- 7:33Speaker 2: oldies radio. I will fully own how uncool I was
- 7:37Speaker 2: when I was a kid, by the way, But you know,
- 7:39Speaker 2: be thinking about all this, be thinking about extreme music
- 7:43Speaker 2: and the stigma of these you know, musical subcultures while
- 7:47Speaker 2: you're listening to our new episode on Slipknot, which is
- 7:51Speaker 2: in your feed right now. Coming up next right after
- 7:55Speaker 2: this after Party is our Rewind episode from our archive
- 7:59Speaker 2: on Talking Heads. This was originally released on July ninth,
- 8:03Speaker 2: twenty twenty four. This episode deals with New York City
- 8:07Speaker 2: in the nineteen seventies when a psycho killer was on
- 8:11Speaker 2: the loose. You don't want to miss this episode. Listen
- 8:14Speaker 2: to it to find out all about all the crazy
- 8:17Speaker 2: shit that was happening in New York at this time,
- 8:19Speaker 2: not only the son of Sam who was terrorizing all
- 8:22Speaker 2: five Burrows, but you know, the blackouts, the trash strikes,
- 8:25Speaker 2: the Yankees on a tear, and how all of it
- 8:28Speaker 2: coincided with the birth of punk rock. Then after the Rewind,
- 8:33Speaker 2: coming next Tuesday, We've got a brand new episode on
- 8:37Speaker 2: John Fruscante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Also, it's
- 8:41Speaker 2: about River Phoenix and about how River Phoenix really died.
- 8:45Speaker 2: John and River were friends. River Phoenix, if those who
- 8:48Speaker 2: don't know, was also a musician he had a band.
- 8:51Speaker 2: We covered Rivers story previously in Hollywood Land, but now
- 8:55Speaker 2: this is the John Fruschante story, largely set during the
- 8:58Speaker 2: making of Bloodshe Sex Magic and immediately thereafter. And then
- 9:03Speaker 2: to bridge the gap here between, We've got Slipknot this
- 9:07Speaker 2: week and then the Chili Peppers next week. Later here
- 9:11Speaker 2: in the exclusive portion of this episode, I'm going to
- 9:14Speaker 2: dig into the history of the Mansion, which is the
- 9:16Speaker 2: house on Laurel Canyon Boulevard in Los Angeles that Rick
- 9:20Speaker 2: Rubin purchased and turned into a recording studio, a studio
- 9:24Speaker 2: and a house that is allegedly haunted according to bands
- 9:27Speaker 2: like Slipknot and the Chili Peppers who have recorded there.
- 9:30Speaker 2: And I'm also going to talk about other supposedly haunted
- 9:33Speaker 2: recording studios as well. These are some really freaky stories, guys,
- 9:37Speaker 2: some that you probably have heard and others that you'd
- 9:40Speaker 2: never heard. And again I'm going to talk about that
- 9:43Speaker 2: later in the exclusive portion. If you're not yet a
- 9:46Speaker 2: member of disgrace Land All Access, which is how you
- 9:49Speaker 2: hear the exclusive portion of the after party, just go
- 9:52Speaker 2: to disgrace landpod dot com to sign up today. Perks
- 9:56Speaker 2: of membership include ad free listening of all Disgraceland and
- 10:00Speaker 2: Hollywood Land episodes, plus bonus material like the exclusive section
- 10:06Speaker 2: I'm talking about, and if you join on Patreon, you
- 10:08Speaker 2: also get access to our monthly video podcast, This Film
- 10:12Speaker 2: Should Be Played Loud, co hosted by Yours Truly and
- 10:15Speaker 2: Jake Brennan, all about the greatest music in some of
- 10:18Speaker 2: our favorite movies of all time. Now, when you're listening
- 10:23Speaker 2: next week to our brand new episode of Disgraceland on
- 10:28Speaker 2: John Fruschante, be thinking about the nineteen nineties, all right,
- 10:34Speaker 2: Be thinking about your favorite songs from the nineteen nineties
- 10:37Speaker 2: and what made them resonate so much with you. Maybe
- 10:41Speaker 2: it's a song like the Chili Peppers under the Bridge,
- 10:44Speaker 2: which is dominated so much by Fruschonte's like iconic guitar part.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Or maybe it's something much more underground than that. Let
- 10:51Speaker 2: us know. Give us a call, send us attack six
- 10:54Speaker 2: one seven nine oh six six six three eight. You
- 10:58Speaker 2: can also email us Disgrace Lampod at gmail dot com
- 11:03Speaker 2: or hit us up on the socials at Disgrace Lampod
- 11:06Speaker 2: and you might hear your answer on next week's after party.

- 11:12Speaker 2: but when we come back, i'm gonna have your voicemails, texts,
- 11:14Speaker 2: dms and more. So don't nobody go nowhere. Okay, So
- 11:36Speaker 2: you want to be a rock and roll star, then
- 11:38Speaker 2: listen how here what I say. I'm in the phone booth.
- 11:41Speaker 2: It's the one across the hall discos six one seven
- 11:44Speaker 2: nine oh six six six three eight. That's how you
- 11:48Speaker 2: get in touch and participate in the after party real quick.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Before I get to your calls and your texts and stuff.
- 11:55Speaker 2: I just wanted to mention guys. This just came across
- 11:58Speaker 2: the news as I was preparing to record this this morning,
- 12:02Speaker 2: but word came down that Glen Hansard, the great Irish
- 12:05Speaker 2: singer songwriter, Oscar winning songwriter, has died at the age
- 12:09Speaker 2: of fifty six. He was killed in a motorcycle crash
- 12:12Speaker 2: in Dublin. Glenn Hansard was in this band called The
- 12:15Speaker 2: Frames and then later in the Swell Season, and he
- 12:18Speaker 2: co starred in a great movie from two thousand and
- 12:21Speaker 2: seven called Once, about a couple of struggling musicians in Dublin.
- 12:25Speaker 2: His song Falling Slowly from that film won him an
- 12:29Speaker 2: Academy Award. That was the first time I had ever
- 12:31Speaker 2: heard of Glenn Hansard. I think a lot of us
- 12:33Speaker 2: here in the States heard about him for the first
- 12:35Speaker 2: time with that movie. Totally worth checking out if you
- 12:38Speaker 2: haven't seen it. It felt very original and very fresh
- 12:41Speaker 2: when it was released. And this is really shitty news.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I'm rip to Glenn Hanswred all right, So, as promised,
- 12:48Speaker 2: we're going to hear from you guys, and first we're
- 12:50Speaker 2: going to go over to the two one four. We
- 12:53Speaker 2: got a call here from d who has an awesome
- 12:55Speaker 2: Slipknot story for us. D take it away.
- 12:59Speaker 4: Hey, Jake, be from Dallas. It's been a while and
- 13:03Speaker 4: I just listened to your slip Knot episode and I
- 13:05Speaker 4: had to call and tell you about my interaction with them.
- 13:13Speaker 4: I want to say. It was two thousand and four
- 13:16Speaker 4: and oz Fest was in town. We didn't have the
- 13:19Speaker 4: cash to go to the show, but we did have
- 13:21Speaker 4: a plan to hopefully meet up with some of the bands.
- 13:25Speaker 4: After the show, we went to the Clubhouse in Dallas,
- 13:28Speaker 4: as you know, which was opened by Vinnie Paul and
- 13:32Speaker 4: dine back Darrell from Pantera, as it was always the
- 13:37Speaker 4: final destination of any reputable bands. We got there early
- 13:43Speaker 4: and we're watching people as they came in. Tall guy
- 13:48Speaker 4: at the bar who was wearing an Exorcist T shirt
- 13:52Speaker 4: was like, Oh, that's a really fucking cool hurt. Let
- 13:55Speaker 4: me go find out where he got it. And so
- 13:57Speaker 4: I went to him and asked, and he said, oh,
- 14:00Speaker 4: someone gave it to me backstage. And I said back stage,
- 14:03Speaker 4: what are you talking about? And he said, my name
- 14:07Speaker 4: is Cory and I'm in a band that you probably
- 14:10Speaker 4: haven't heard of called Fripknot. That's right, Are you fucking
- 14:15Speaker 4: kidding me? I said, please, don't go anywhere. I went
- 14:18Speaker 4: got my husband came back and we said we are
- 14:21Speaker 4: huge and we love what you guys are doing. You
- 14:25Speaker 4: guys are just going to be megastars. And he thanked
- 14:29Speaker 4: us and was very He was so sweet and so kind,
- 14:32Speaker 4: and as he started to walk away, he turned back
- 14:35Speaker 4: and gave us like the universal like, hey, come with me,
- 14:40Speaker 4: And we ended up at a table where later Twiggy Ramirez,
- 14:46Speaker 4: Marilyn Manson and what I can only assume are additional
- 14:52Speaker 4: members of Slip Knot, and also Vinnie Paul and the
- 14:55Speaker 4: biggest bottle of tequila I've ever seen in my life.
- 15:00Speaker 4: We partied, had a great time. There were girls everywhere.
- 15:03Speaker 4: We didn't have to worry about this thing. And as
- 15:07Speaker 4: we're leaving, Vinny Paul is at the door and in
- 15:11Speaker 4: his gravelly voice is like, you guys aren't driving right, No,
- 15:16Speaker 4: we're not driving. We're responsible. We're going to get a cabin.
- 15:20Speaker 4: He said, no, you're not. He arranged for us a
- 15:23Speaker 4: private town car to take us back to our room.
- 15:27Speaker 4: And I just wanted to say a huge thank you
- 15:31Speaker 4: to Corey. I always knew you guys were gonna make
- 15:34Speaker 4: it and just be super megastars. I just want to
- 15:38Speaker 4: thank you for one of the most memorable moments of
- 15:42Speaker 4: my life. I've always been a fan of metal, I've
- 15:46Speaker 4: done VIP backstage, and that night was still, to this day,
- 15:52Speaker 4: hands down my best rock and roll experience. So thank you, Corey,
- 15:58Speaker 4: and I hope you get to hear it.
- 16:01Speaker 2: D that is that is an incredible story. Thank you
- 16:05Speaker 2: so much for calling in and sharing that with us all,
- 16:08Speaker 2: and you're proving my point from earlier, the whole like
- 16:12Speaker 2: stigma that we had back in the day of like
- 16:15Speaker 2: extreme music makers and listeners and how they're the nicest
- 16:20Speaker 2: fucking people, you know what I mean. For those of
- 16:24Speaker 2: you who know, if you know, you know, like you're
- 16:25Speaker 2: not surprised by this story at all, but you know,
- 16:30Speaker 2: eleven year old me back in nineteen eighty six or
- 16:33Speaker 2: seven or eight, whatever, would have been very fucking surprised
- 16:36Speaker 2: by this so incredible story. Thank you so much for
- 16:39Speaker 2: calling in d love that love to hear from you.
- 16:42Speaker 2: We got another voicemail here from the six one seven
- 16:45Speaker 2: from let's see Jake in the six one seven. Let's
- 16:48Speaker 2: take a listen to this.
- 16:49Speaker 3: Hey, this is Jake in the six one seven. What's up?
- 16:52Speaker 3: My first question is, what in the hell is going on?
- 16:57Speaker 3: Where are you? Wait? By you, I mean me, where
- 17:00Speaker 3: am I? I'm in Boston. I am stuck here. And
- 17:05Speaker 3: you might be like, why how do you get stuck in? Boss? Well,
- 17:08Speaker 3: the weather apparently up there in the skies has made
- 17:11Speaker 3: for some tough flyings, so our flight was Canceled's supposed
- 17:14Speaker 3: to be back recording the after party I'm not zess.
- 17:18Speaker 3: I know. I said I was going to be back Thursday.
- 17:20Speaker 3: It's now looking like I'm going to be back on Saturday.
- 17:23Speaker 3: But guys, have no fear all as well. Everybody's healthy,
- 17:27Speaker 3: everybody's got all the fingers and toes.
- 17:29Speaker 4: It's all good.
- 17:31Speaker 3: Life could be much worse, it's not, Thankfully, Hopefully we
- 17:34Speaker 3: get home safely.
- 17:36Speaker 4: What's going on?
- 17:37Speaker 3: What's happening? What do you I don't even know what
- 17:39Speaker 3: you're talking about there. I guess we had the slipnot
- 17:41Speaker 3: episode this weekend. We had Dollar parton last weekend. We've
- 17:45Speaker 3: got John Frusciante coming up next week, which I'm very,
- 17:48Speaker 3: very very excited about. I can't wait for you guys
- 17:50Speaker 3: to hear the story. It's not just the story of
- 17:51Speaker 3: John Frusciante. It's the story of John and his pal
- 17:55Speaker 3: Ruver Phoenix, and the idea that some people have that
- 18:02Speaker 3: John had something to do with River's death, and that
- 18:04Speaker 3: he was more than something to do with it. The
- 18:07Speaker 3: idea a leegendly that he was directly responsible for River's death.
- 18:10Speaker 3: So we get into all of that Johnny Death's Fifer Room.
- 18:14Speaker 3: That's all coming out next week. I can't wait to
- 18:16Speaker 3: talk to you all about it. Han't fun up here.
- 18:19Speaker 3: Went to a SOCX game. They're out of town now,
- 18:21Speaker 3: they're not on the West Coast, and I want to
- 18:24Speaker 3: see my dad play with his BANDI other n I
- 18:27Speaker 3: brought my kids. My eight year old had a Jay
- 18:31Speaker 3: Giles T shirt on. Some drunk dude went up to him,
- 18:35Speaker 3: sat down right at our table and was like, why
- 18:38Speaker 3: do you like Jay Giles? Think very kind of ornery.
- 18:42Speaker 3: And I got to say, my son handled himself very well.
- 18:45Speaker 3: He was prepared for the moment. He immediately responded. He said, well,
- 18:50Speaker 3: I liked him because my three favorite songs are must
- 18:53Speaker 3: Have Got Lost, Angel in the Centerfold, and Free s Frame.
- 18:57Speaker 3: And then the guy pressed him even harder. He was like,
- 19:00Speaker 3: how did you learn about Jay Giles? He said, well,
- 19:04Speaker 3: I heard Angel in the Centerfold and then I saw
- 19:07Speaker 3: the cassette at a store and I bought it and
- 19:09Speaker 3: I put it on and I was like, I like
- 19:11Speaker 3: this band. And then the guy offered a BioMA Corona.
- 19:15Speaker 3: It was fantastic. So yeah, we're having fun in Boston.
- 19:19Speaker 3: I can't wait to get back though, and back in
- 19:22Speaker 3: the chair talking to all you guys into the microphone.
- 19:25Speaker 3: Big thank you Zef for holding it down in my absence.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Lots of cool stuff coming your way guys very shortly. Again,
- 19:33Speaker 3: can't wait to talk about that Foshanty episode with you
- 19:36Speaker 3: that's next week.
- 19:36Speaker 2: I thought that was you, Jake, Oh, sneaky, sneaky. Great
- 19:44Speaker 2: to hear your voice. That sucks that you guys are
- 19:46Speaker 2: stuck there until Saturday. Hopefully you don't meet any more
- 19:48Speaker 2: ornery Jay Giles fans like, give the fucking kid a
- 19:51Speaker 2: break man. You know, he gave you his three favorite
- 19:54Speaker 2: songs like why do you have to press him even harder?
- 19:58Speaker 2: And I'm also glad you got to see the right socks,
- 20:00Speaker 2: though I'd like to blow your cover there or out
- 20:03Speaker 2: your little secret and let people know that you guys attended.
- 20:06Speaker 2: I believe the game in which they lost their wind streak, right,
- 20:10Speaker 2: they were on like a fifteen game win streak and
- 20:12Speaker 2: then you guys went and they lost. So I don't
- 20:15Speaker 2: know do with that what you but yeah, I'm excited
- 20:20Speaker 2: to hear this John Freschante episode next week as well.
- 20:24Speaker 2: You know, you mentioned River Phoenix, who's a big part
- 20:26Speaker 2: of this episode, and I remember when I wrote the
- 20:28Speaker 2: River Phoenix episode for Hollywood Land you know, this subject
- 20:32Speaker 2: came up about free Chante and River's death and stuff,
- 20:35Speaker 2: and I just didn't I didn't even want to touch
- 20:37Speaker 2: it with a ten foot pole. So I may have
- 20:39Speaker 2: alluded to it at some point in the episode, but
- 20:41Speaker 2: I didn't really get into it. But of course leave
- 20:43Speaker 2: it to Jake to figure out a really thoughtful, creative
- 20:47Speaker 2: way to get into this, to talk about it, to
- 20:50Speaker 2: face it head on, and to come out at the
- 20:51Speaker 2: end with some conclusions. So anyways, good to hear from
- 20:55Speaker 2: your brother, and looking forward to having you back in
- 20:57Speaker 2: the saddle here with us again soon, barring any more
- 21:01Speaker 2: crazy ass Boston weather, which I think it's sunny there.
- 21:05Speaker 2: I'm not really sure what the issue is with the weather.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Jake Brennan will return to the after Party next week. Meanwhile,
- 21:12Speaker 2: let's get on to some other text messages we've got here.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Six one seven nine oh six six six three eight
- 21:17Speaker 2: is how you get in touch. We got a text
- 21:20Speaker 2: here from the two to oh three and it reads, Hi,
- 21:23Speaker 2: Jake and Zeth, this is Melissa from the two oh three.
- 21:26Speaker 2: I heard you mention that there will be a Smashing
- 21:28Speaker 2: Pumpkins episode coming up. I will of course listen, but
- 21:32Speaker 2: I have never been into those guys. I went to
- 21:34Speaker 2: Lallapalooza in nineteen ninety four with my friend Walter. The
- 21:37Speaker 2: b C Boys played second to last and Smashing Pumpkins
- 21:41Speaker 2: were the headliners. Five minutes into Smashing Pumpkins, Walter and
- 21:44Speaker 2: I looked at each other and said, let's get out
- 21:46Speaker 2: of here. That festival was amazing back then, but I
- 21:49Speaker 2: still cannot understand how the Smashing Pumpkins were the headliners
- 21:52Speaker 2: over the Beastie Boys. Fun fact, I heard on one
- 21:55Speaker 2: of those MTV shows that the name for Hello Nasty,
- 21:59Speaker 2: which is a Beast Boys record, came from a receptionist
- 22:02Speaker 2: answering the phone and saying hello Nasty. The business was
- 22:05Speaker 2: part of their production or management team, and the full
- 22:08Speaker 2: name had the word nasty in it. Thanks for all
- 22:11Speaker 2: the pods. Rock a rolla Melissa, great great message here.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Lots to get into here. First of all, yes, Hello Nasty.
- 22:19Speaker 2: The BC Boys record was named after their publicity their
- 22:23Speaker 2: PR firm called Nasty little Man, and they would answer
- 22:27Speaker 2: the people would answer the phone Hello Nasty, And that's
- 22:29Speaker 2: and that's where that that phrase came from. When I
- 22:32Speaker 2: was a music critic in my former life, worked with
- 22:36Speaker 2: Nasty Little Man a lot. They represented a lot of
- 22:38Speaker 2: a really really big great artists like the Beasts and
- 22:41Speaker 2: and Beck and Paul McCartney and Foo Fighters and all
- 22:44Speaker 2: the all the heavy hitters were with Nasty Little Man,
- 22:47Speaker 2: it seemed. And also the guy that ran that company
- 22:49Speaker 2: was named Steve Martin, but it wasn't the Steve Martin.
- 22:51Speaker 2: It was Nasty little Man's Steve Martin. Anyways, Smashing Pumpkins
- 22:55Speaker 2: headlining Lalla Palooza, I think that there was some sort
- 22:58Speaker 2: of shenanigans there with how they got to headline Lollapalooza.
- 23:02Speaker 2: I think Nirvana had pulled out and then they went
- 23:05Speaker 2: in the top slot. And looking back, it's you go,
- 23:09Speaker 2: why why would Smashing Pumpkins be there? I agree with
- 23:12Speaker 2: you over the BC Boys, just because the BC Boys
- 23:14Speaker 2: seemed to have so much more lasting cultural resonance. But
- 23:19Speaker 2: remember the time. This is ninety four, this is the
- 23:22Speaker 2: year that Kurt Cobain died. Smashing Pumpkins were sort of
- 23:25Speaker 2: like filling the void, the Nirvana void at the time,
- 23:29Speaker 2: as like the biggest rock band on the planet. I mean,
- 23:31Speaker 2: Siame's Dream and Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness were fucking
- 23:34Speaker 2: huge records. We get into that in the episode that
- 23:37Speaker 2: we have coming out on them. So anyways, there's a
- 23:40Speaker 2: little behind the scenes there on Nasty little Man and
- 23:43Speaker 2: the Pumpkins. Thanks for the message, Melissa six one seven
- 23:46Speaker 2: nine oh six six six three eight. We've got a
- 23:51Speaker 2: text here from the seven six three. Jake was talking
- 23:55Speaker 2: about summer reading, watching, and listening recommendations last week, So
- 24:00Speaker 2: the seven sixty three text in Good Evening Jake summer
- 24:03Speaker 2: recommendations for books. I have joined the Dungeon Crawler Carl Bandwagon.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Great read, really easy to get into, more so if
- 24:11Speaker 2: you have ever played video games. For movies, I just
- 24:14Speaker 2: rewatched be kind Rewind with Jack Black and Mustaf very funny,
- 24:18Speaker 2: doesn't take itself too seriously. For music, I've been listening
- 24:21Speaker 2: to a lot of live Bruce Springsteen. Just listened to
- 24:23Speaker 2: his show from the Born to Run tour in New
- 24:26Speaker 2: Jersey in nineteen eighty five. Great show, great music, especially
- 24:30Speaker 2: for July fourth. Thanks for all you do well. Thank
- 24:34Speaker 2: you very much seven six' three for the. RECOMMENDATIONS i
- 24:38Speaker 2: remember liking be Kind rewind when that came. Out that's
- 24:42Speaker 2: A Michelle gondry. FILM i think that's the one he
- 24:45Speaker 2: made right After Eternal sunshine in The Spotless. Mind you
- 24:48Speaker 2: know you can't go wroun With bruce circa nineteen eighty.
- 24:51Speaker 2: Five the guy was just a. Machine even the clips
- 24:55Speaker 2: now At bruce and The Eastreet band playing look. AMAZING
- 24:58Speaker 2: i saw. Them the one TIME i was them was
- 25:00Speaker 2: nineteen ninety nine WHEN i think THE i think everybody
- 25:05Speaker 2: was back in the, fold like Little steven And clarence
- 25:08Speaker 2: and like it was all the original members of THE
- 25:11Speaker 2: Ea Street band were back together for the first time
- 25:13Speaker 2: in a little. BIT i think was after Like bruce's
- 25:15Speaker 2: couple of solo records he had done there or. Whatever
- 25:18Speaker 2: AND i just remember it was at The garden In,
- 25:20Speaker 2: boston AND i just remember the seating was completely surrounded the.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Stage it filled up the entire, garden And, bruce like
- 25:27Speaker 2: throughout the show would turn so that he would face
- 25:31Speaker 2: all four sides of the of the, garden so that
- 25:35Speaker 2: everybody so you, know you weren't looking At bruce's back
- 25:37Speaker 2: the whole. Time it was a cool thing he. Was
- 25:39Speaker 2: he was really giving, it giving it up for the fans.
- 25:42Speaker 3: There it was.
- 25:42Speaker 2: GREAT i got a text here from three oh four that,
- 25:47Speaker 2: says were you guys talking About Edward Hopper's New york.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Interior why, yes three or? Four that is the painting
- 25:53Speaker 2: That jake AND i were talking about in one of
- 25:56Speaker 2: the shows last, week And jake had a controversial take
- 25:59Speaker 2: on the painting a little bit more later in this
- 26:01Speaker 2: episode about. That, okay everybody else out, there be like
- 26:05Speaker 2: your fellow discos here that we just heard, from and

- 29:33Speaker 2: seems to be a man's hat behind, her giving us
- 29:36Speaker 2: a clue that she has. Company the front of her
- 29:38Speaker 2: dress is hyped, up but no other evidence of a

- 30:31Speaker 2: on in this, painting that there's some mystery man beneath her.
- 30:34Speaker 2: There it was very controversial. Take it was a take
- 30:37Speaker 2: THAT i did not, believe ALTHOUGH i did not believe,
- 30:40Speaker 2: it and then he sent me a text of the
- 30:42Speaker 2: picture after we recorded the episode that was, like NOW
