- 1:34today's episode The Jane Doe Case. Ladies and gentlemen will take you now by
- 1:40a transcription, behind the scenes of a police headquarters in a great American city,
- 1:45or under the cold, glaring lights. We pass before us, the
- 1:48innocent, the bigger, the thief, the murderer. This is the lineup.
- 2:25We can sit right here, missus. James are close. Well,
- 2:28it's all right. They can't see us through that screen. You've got the
- 2:32man. Well, we picked up some possible suspects in the neighborhood. I'll
- 2:37be in the lineup. That's right. Are you sure we're not too close?

- 2:53Each other suspects you will see will be numbered. I'll call off the number
- 2:57their name in char you have any questions, right identifications, Please remember the
- 3:00number assigned to the prisoners. I call his name at the end of each
- 3:04line. When I ask for questions or identifications, call out the number if
- 3:07you're sure. Are not too sure of the suspect? Have hing held?
- 3:10The officers who took your name will assist you. They're seated, Amn you
- 3:14please be prompt with your questions or identifications. When the prisoners leave here,
- 3:17they're center the washroom and dress back into the jail food. It makes it
- 3:21quite difficult to bring them back after they leave here. The questions I asked
- 3:23these suspects and merely to get a natural tone of voice, but do not
- 3:27pay too much attention to their answers, as they often lie. All right,
- 3:30bring on the line. I keep it moving all the way to the
- 3:36end of the stage. Move it up right over here. That's right.
- 3:39All of your turn and face front, eat the hands at your sides,
- 3:43look straight ahead through the screen, and I ask your questions. Don't mumble?

- 6:23I said? And I'll say this is a stick up. This is stick
- 6:28up, Louder. This is a stick up again, Louder, this is
- 6:32a stick after James, No, no, not Lieutenant, come in see
- 6:55any lucky? Can you have luck? Girl gets herself beating the death and
- 7:00let the low park in the middle of the night. No identification, no
- 7:02murder weapon, no witnesses. Yeah, hey yeah, coffee smells good time?
- 7:11Yeah? I guess not. It's too hot. What about that,
- 7:14missus? James? Oh, just a long shot. She thought she saw
- 7:16a man drive a forty or forty one green Ford coop away from the park
- 7:19about the time the murder. She get a good look at him. It's
- 7:24too dark. What about the ford. There's a pickup out on him.
- 7:28It'll be five thousand cars like it in town, missing persons. Nothing you
- 7:33think somebody'd call in, young girl like that? All that stuff in the
- 7:36papers. It's been forty eight hours now. Yeah, I'm thirsty. Let's
- 7:42got a cook shut. She was a good looking kid, Paige, before
- 7:46somebody got to him. He figured the guy was a psychle. He was
- 7:51beat up pretty bad. What about robbery only wasn't any perse farm? Yeah?
- 7:59Well one, yeah, thanks, thanks too lately? Kind of deal
- 8:09drives and nuts. Newspaper splash headlines, public yells for results. We've got
- 8:16a Jane Doe in the morgue. No motive psycho to look for in the
- 8:20city at three million, and it's the spot. Didn't it better than coffee
- 8:26and at night like this? Yeah? Good crime? Try one. I
- 8:31think I will. It's just going to be your office and nothing doing.
- 8:37Not this close to pay day this time, You're lucky. I already tapped
- 8:39full er. He plays lousy peanut. He does, for a fact,
- 8:43not no planet's about that Ludlow Park chains up cars sixty two. Just found
- 8:48a green forty one fort Cooper Vannon up on Summit the road near the reservoir,
- 8:50blood all over the front seat. Fuller, didn't waste any time getting
- 9:11here, smart boy. Must be twenty degrees cooler here than at the crime
- 9:15lamb. High Lieutenant, how does it look for it? And it could
- 9:20be the geloppier after Lieutenant's dried blood on that front seat. All right,
- 9:24I think let's have a flash. Yeah here, no mistake about that.
- 9:31Uh uh yeah. I can't be sure it's human then until I test back
- 9:35at the LAMB. There's a gambler for you. What are the odds and
- 9:39how you test out for it? It's very funny. What about Princeville,
- 9:43we've dusted nothing, no registration, Slippman, there's no plate seater. Anybody
- 9:48call in on the motor in syrial numbers. Crocketts checking out. Now,
- 9:52I'll see how I was making out. The cars clean the rest of the
- 9:56way to the glove compartment, the red deck on behind the seats and regular
- 10:00there's spring house cleaning it. Only somebody got messed about that front seat.
- 10:03Yeah, I think it's the buggy you're looking for now. It could be
- 10:07could have killed her in the car, toss the buddy out in the park
- 10:09and driven up here. CAUs been here a couple of days. Look at
- 10:16the weeds and the tire tracks. Oh they turned out more gardening and less
- 10:22peanut. Calhom I tell you too, I'll make more money at peanut.
- 10:24That's not what Coin says. Lucky stiff. Must have been carrying a horsesho
- 10:28around. Get a registration in the carbin? Oh what is it? Mary
- 10:33Chambers, eight eleven Agar Street, want to run over? It's too early
- 10:37to go to ben private park? Yeah, duples? Is your name on
- 11:03the belly? Not this same? Hey? Here she is Mary Chambers,
- 11:09Sandra Owen. I wonder they're both still alive. Still funny hot? Yeah?
- 11:22I ring again. Somebody's coming up. Yeah? Oh man, are
- 11:33you Mary Chambers? Mary? You want to see her? Yes? Is
- 11:37she in? No? I'm found to her roommate. Maybe I can help
- 11:39her. Oh maybe you cameras and we're police officers. That's right. Can
- 11:43we come in? Please? Well what do you want? I'd just like
- 11:46to ask you a few questions. Well, sure, thanks. You have
- 11:52to excuse how I look. I was washing my hair? Right? What's
- 11:58the name is Mary in Trouble? Oh? We're not sure? Tell me?
- 12:01Does she own a forty one Ford coop Green? Yeah? That's right.
- 12:05I think it's a forty one. She didn't run over anybody or something,
- 12:09did she? Nothing like that? I didn't figure she would. Mary's
- 12:11a good driver. Say, my hair is pretty wet. You mind if
- 12:15I riot while we're talking? No? No, go right ahead. I
- 12:16hate to walk around with wet hair. It makes me look a fright.
- 12:20What about Mary? When'd you see her last? Mazaua, see before last?
- 12:26She's been missing since then? Missing? Who makes you think she's missing?
- 12:31You said you hadn't seen her for two nights? Sure, I was
- 12:33out of town on location for Capricorn Productions having pictures. You know, I
- 12:37thought maybe it would Most people can tell just by looking at me. No,
- 12:41So you haven't seen Mary since she came back? Or seen the city
- 12:45papers? No? Why all the questions? Is the kids in trouble?
- 12:48Tell me? Is that her picture on the radio? Yeah? That's well,
- 12:52you think then? Kind of glamorous? Hand to town? Sat?
- 12:58Will you? What's going on? Who's Mary? But? I'm sorry,
- 13:01miss own? But I'm afraid Mary Chambers might be dead murdered, kidding you
- 13:11kidding? Would you mind coming down to the morgue with us make a possible
- 13:15identification? Oh sure, sure, girl, make sure that the ry because
- 13:43she is the that's right, that's the first time. That's my side,
- 13:52hie. Kind of I'm sorry, it's the only way to make sure,
- 14:00Kyl, Lieutenant which one to night, Jane Doe number one, join the
- 14:03lovelo Parker right here. It might be kind of rough on the lady,
- 14:13lieutenant. You saw him, I pull the bang shore. Can you see
- 14:20him as own? Yeah? So well, better step closer my own.
- 14:35That's true. Jack Benny is back in town, and that means, of
- 14:56course, the whole delightful Jack Benny Gang back on CBS Radio Sunday nights.
- 15:01Listen in this coming Sunday for the laughs of your life with Mary, Dennis,
- 15:05Bob Crosby, Rochester and the rest of the Jack Benny Show back in
- 15:09action again where we're right here on CBS Radio. Of course, just don't
- 15:35make sense, tennant, nobody's wanted I want to do that to Mary?
- 15:41Why should they? We're hoping you could tell us, miss Oon. Just
- 15:46don't make sense. She's only been in town a couple of weeks than cream
- 15:52should plain. She'd only been here a couple of weeks. Yeah, she
- 15:58hadn't hardly met anybody around. I don't eat rockies. I watched Roskies the
- 16:03Belmont Grell whose real name's Anthrone Kara Rosky or Somethingbody calls him Rocky. Though
- 16:07Mary worked there, the waitress temporary. She was gonna get in pictures too.
- 16:12This coffee is good. What's the address? Eighteen twelve? Large big
- 16:18neon signs out in the front. You can't miss the place. Don't eat
- 16:21there though the food globes. Was she friendly with anyone there? Rosky?
- 16:25Maybe the Big club. He's got ideas about cute blonde or ideally his wife
- 16:30watches too close? What about boyfriends? She didn't have anybody, not anybody
- 16:33steady. That is, she'd go to a movie or something like that once
- 16:37in a while, but not with anybody steady, nobody else you can think
- 16:41of. Honest, there wasn't nobody the chats. They couldn't be, not
- 16:45a sweet kid like Mary. Nobody could want to kill her. Somebody did.
- 17:04Why You guys always pick a lot of the time to ask questions your
- 17:07places in busy asking we're talking busy. My wife's around, she gets ideas
- 17:12she got any about you and Mary Jims like she's got with every waitress,
- 17:17nothing more. Look, i'll tell you like that in this business you got
- 17:21to have waitresses, good lookers, sexy. You understand only with my wife
- 17:25and don't pay. Everything I got to do with women is poison. What
- 17:30does she want if got on a men's room in session? And let's get
- 17:33back to Mary Chambers. What's to get back to? All I know is
- 17:36like that she worked here a couple weeks help, no more than that's all.
- 17:40That's a pretty good reason. She beat up, brutal like paper set
- 17:45words. What kind of beat her to dead? Brutal like that? And
- 17:49what about your customers? Asking? Not is anybody making a particular play for
- 17:53her? Look, I'll explain you like that. With proty girls like I
- 17:57got, usual the customer, they try what they got to lose. Only
- 18:02with Mary was nobody gets even for his base. You sure my wife could
- 18:07tell you, please don't ask her the ideas that woman gets even the red
- 18:12hair she was respected redhead. Another waitress, who's that? Waiters a tall,
- 18:18thin redhead guy eats in here two thirty couple times a week always,
- 18:22you know the dollar mid ten specially gets. He never says nothing east when
- 18:27he gets out, So what makes her think he's crazy in the head.
- 18:30That's what she's done. I told you she gets ideas. Says he was
- 18:34always watching Mary like he was hungry or something idea. Sure it was hungry.
- 18:38Why else he would be here? Was he here the last night Mary
- 18:42worked for you? Mister? What do I do? Do I keep a
- 18:45time clock on customers? He's been in the last week a couple of times,
- 18:48maybe that night? Maybe not? Does he live around here? Who
- 18:52was interested? Very lives as long as he eats here. But I don't
- 18:56think you're looking for him. All he ever said to Mary was give more
- 19:00bought. Maybe you'll say a little more to us. You want the laby
- 19:04for plenty? Some cops in here to see if that guy shows up again?
- 19:07Okay with you? What should I do? Say? No? Only
- 19:11the bet there'll be plenty ongre if they don't eat me. I think my
- 19:15wife will throw them out. I'll comma, you're a little late. I
- 19:32had to stop at the drugstore stomach again. Yeah, looky you didn't have
- 19:36any of Rosky's apple pie. I had the huckleberry yesterday. Five days of
- 19:41that food, and they say a cops feet take a beating. Who's down
- 19:45there now acquiring Burton. We'll keep this take out another twenty four hours.
- 19:49Then we have to figure he won't show up there again. If you ever
- 19:52eat that apple pie, you won't. Yeah, Now, there's nothing doing
- 19:56here either. What's this dread ST's got up? And duck Gerson's office?
- 20:02Oh, what's you say? Killer figures to be a cycle all right,
- 20:04probably a deviant when there's not a tall, thin, redheaded man in a
- 20:08bunch, not in the neighborhood either. We checked seven blocks in all directions
- 20:12from the restaurant. How can there be a hunk of territory that big without
- 20:15a red headed man? Let me reach me. Maybe he dyed his hair.
- 20:21All I know is if we have to get this guy before got me.
- 20:26Quiet, good man just came out. There's QUI now, Ben waiting
- 20:37outside. Yeah, keep going, Ben, he's already left Barton telling him,
- 20:45Yeah, turn rid the next corner. What happened? Quiet? They
- 20:49must have seen Rosky give us a high sign. Walk right out again,
- 20:53Burton quarts before you pulled up. The guys hold in. It's twenty one
- 20:56twelve facre, twenty one hundred block. It's eight hundred numbers. We checked
- 21:00one lousy block. Moment would have had him five days ago. Where Burton
- 21:15called from my lady's apartment. We must still be in there come the backdog.
- 21:19Fine, we'll go in and back. Fine, right there, Ben,
- 21:27down the hall, I hass Burton. Where is he? Burt back
- 21:33the way kitchen, got a belly gun. He cycled. Then he was
- 21:37waiting outside. Oh called Quine said he wanted to coppa Mary Chambers. Yeah
- 21:42he did it. Hid out on the floor until she she got through work,
- 21:48and then made a drive to the pocket and he killed it. Set
- 21:52it all nice and easy. Said he was ready to let me take him
- 21:55in. Then he gunned me real cycle. He ducked in here somewhere,
- 22:11Ben Man, we'll find him. Should know the neighborhood, all right,
- 22:15Iver saw so many backyards and alleys of my life. Couldn't get a clean
- 22:18shot anywhere. And that's going to be tough for here, all these kids
- 22:21around. He must have figured that out. Yeah, we should spot him,
- 22:23tall redhead length time I look at that ride rocket ships. Sure keep
- 22:27the kids up to day. We're really going for it too, and I
- 22:30wouldn't mind having a piece of the Okay, there he is. We're been
- 22:33Paris where Yeah you see him where he's running with Pa. He must look
- 22:37here. Huh guns down A cop knows we're tailing him when he comes to
- 22:40work. How do you figure that? What I'm trying to figure it out
- 22:42is how to take him before he starts stunning down a few kids. You
- 22:45can't clear the place. Might be all he need is start triggering, and
- 22:49we can't take the chance. His landlady would said he was a nice,
- 22:53sweet young man, always paint his rent on time things were making a mistake
- 23:00them At Foley, we can't rush him no. No where he's standing operating
- 23:03that hand lever, there's fences on both sides, that comes straight at him.
- 23:07No place to get a clean shot out of him either one whilest I
- 23:11can hit a half a dozen people. And what's that thing in back of
- 23:15him part of the tunnel for the kids train that goes around. Yeah,
- 23:18it's a streamliner with real smoke. No opening directly in the back of him,
- 23:22though, we'd have to break from the closest end of the tunnel,
- 23:23fifteen to twenty feet in the opener. Spot a shot and maybe not of
- 23:27he was busy out in the front. I'll give you inclined four minutes to
- 23:32get back there. Then I'll start talking to him. What about Captain Waldoman?
- 23:34It's too risky waiting. You can't figure a mind like that, No
- 23:37telling one he's able to open up with that gun. Okay. I always
- 23:41didn't want to ride a lot of those trains. You know they get back
- 23:56over that boy? Mister, how much for a ride on that thing?
- 24:00Who bets? And what? Who? It's the best ride in the park.
- 24:03Yeah, it looks like it, all right? Say is it safe?
- 24:07You ought to know better than I that we got most big kids riding
- 24:11in this park. Nobody takes chances on hurting kid. Yeah, yeah,
- 24:15I guess that's right. What's that Levey off? Right? There? Not
- 24:18a break or something? Don't come any closer, mister. I got a
- 24:22gun. Well, what are you doing with that? You're a cop?
- 24:26I can tell. I can always tell a cop. Shouldn't have come here,
- 24:29mister. Now, I got to kill you too, like to kill
- 24:33Mary Chambers. You shouldn't have been that way, not looking at me.
- 24:37It's not caring about me. I loved her and she wouldn't even look at
- 24:41me. Is that why? I am it? You thought you didn't like
- 24:44you? Did you ask her about it? When you were out in the
- 24:47park? She laughed and I loved her, and she laughed, and the
- 24:52tire iron was right there, and wasn't anything else I could do. You
- 24:56shouldn't laughed at me. You're right, boy, that wasn't nice. It
- 25:00wasn't a bit nicer with a laugh at tandstill trying to get close to me.
- 25:07Aren't you trying to take my gun away? So even put me in
- 25:11jail? Why should I want to do that? At it? You got
- 25:12to write to killer? She laughed at you. She shouldn't have done that,
- 25:18laugh at me. That girl in Chicago, she laughed at me too.
- 25:22She deserved to night too, didn't she am? I don't blame you
- 25:26for killing her too. She deserves And still you here. I'm going to
- 25:30kill you too, but I don't want to do it yet. A lot
- 25:36of kids still want to ride on here, lots of kids. I got
- 25:38to see. If that happy, that's my job making kids happy? Well,
- 25:42that's a fine job in it. Goodnt ask for a better one.
- 25:47I was gonna. I was gonna let that other cop take you in.
- 25:52She seemed like a nice guy. And then I remember the kids. Huh.
- 25:56I gotta make the kids happy. That's my job. I'm sure it
- 25:59is. That's why I want to help you. That's why i'm here,
- 26:02Emmett, to help you. No, No, you're not. No,
- 26:03you're you're lying to me. I know why should i'm ride yam It.
- 26:07I only want to help you. No, you don't, you're lying.
- 26:10I know. That's why you send those two friends with yours around on that
- 26:14plane. I saw you. I haven't got any friends, am it,
- 26:17Only you. I'd like to be friends with you, would you? I
- 26:22mean, would you really sure? I would? I like you? You
- 26:27do? I like you very much, Emma. No, you're gone.
- 26:32No, you're lying too. I'm gonna shoot you. I mean, after
- 26:36the pot closest. I still got to make some kids happy before the pot
- 26:40close. Okay, okay, am It, I don't wait. I want
- 26:42to help you. Make him happy then, then, then tell your friends
- 26:47not to speak up on me. From him back. I see him back
- 26:51there near the tunnel. Tell him you here for I'll shoot you right now.
- 26:55I told you I haven't got any friends, Emmy. The only friends
- 26:57I got is tell him, Hey, you too, go back. We
- 27:03don't want your hair, Emit, deny a friend. We don't want you,
