- 2:05Today. Restaurant Week officially kicks off in Charleston today this evening. Dickinson
- 2:10Gold from Buzz Foods is going to join us to talk about that. Plus
- 2:13Ryan Thorn, who is the state director for the USDA, is going to
- 2:15join us on the show as well. Well, let's uh, let's bring
- 2:21in our good friend now, Thorn Meeks from Meek's Realty. We scheduled to
- 2:23have Rich the realtor on the show today. We apologize for Rich not being
- 2:28able to be here, he's dealing with a sick kid at the moment,
- 2:30but instead we had the namesake of Meek's realty, Thorn Meeks is wh us
- 2:35via the Big Lee Pickley Wiggly Hotline Thor Good morning, How are you sir?
- 2:38I'm doing great, David? How are you doing this morning? I'm
- 2:39doing fine. I think it's actually because you know, I was going to
- 2:43talk about this with Rich. Rich actually got married not long ago, and
- 2:46I think maybe his wife has already you know, put the put the hammer
- 2:51down that he can't leave the house. Is that it? That's exactly right?
- 2:54You know how it goes? David? Well, yeah, through thirty
- 2:58Yeah, I probably wouldn't know that. But anyway, glad to have you
- 3:01with us on the show today. On yesterday's show, I had Terrell Ellis
- 3:06from Advantage Valley with the results of their recent housing survey here in the Kanaal
- 3:09Valley. Now you can go back, anyone can listen to that interview we
- 3:13did with Tarrell. It's on my social media or on your favorite podcast provider
- 3:17the station social media as well. But but Tarrell said, thor what Rich
- 3:22and I have talked about ever since we started doing the segments a year or
- 3:24more ago, and that is we simply need more housing here in the Kanaal
- 3:29Valley. Yeah, you're spot on, and you know, we're really fortunate
- 3:32to have Terrell and kind of lead the lead attack there and get that housing
- 3:37study completed force for the surrounding county counties of the Metro Valley. And you
- 3:43know, we were our intuition was correct, and obviously it's it's pretty black
- 3:47and white. We need more houses. We need you know, every scale
- 3:51and size that we can possibly put on the land. So that's what we're
- 3:55lacking right now today. Yeah, and you're right, and a lot of
- 3:59it has to do with a lot of these you know, folks that are
- 4:00coming in with these new jobs. You know, we talk about new Core
- 4:03and Berkshire, Hathaway and all these others, but there's there's a lot more
- 4:06to it than just that. And we're when we talk about housing, we're
- 4:11not just talking about things and subdivisions. We're talking about simple polices for people
- 4:15who live like dwellings and you know, apartments and things like that. I
- 4:17know that's something that you guys kind of specialize there, but we definitely definitely
- 4:21need more of those. I want to talk about something that we don't talk
- 4:25about a lot with riches as kind of you're into the things, and that
- 4:28is property management. Exactly how many units do you guys have so right now,
- 4:33Dave, we managed about four thousand units and that's a mixed bag.
- 4:36So we manage everything from single family dwellings to apartment complexes to commercial, retail,
- 4:45industrial, light industrial, and so we cover all the bases and manage
- 4:49pretty much anything that would be able to be leased. Four thousand units.
- 4:54You know, people are probably like me, scratching head going. I didn't
- 4:56know there were four thousand properties available in the Kanal Valley, but but there
- 5:00are. There's a lot of properties out there. We need more, as
- 5:01we said earlier, but there's a lot of properties out there. Not just
- 5:04we're talking about residents is thor, but we're also talking about, as you
- 5:09said, commercial properties as well. Yeah, that's exactly right. Obviously,
- 5:12the residential is where the main need is right now. But anything is anything
- 5:16is good. Any progress is good progress. So we're all on board for
- 5:19that. So now you also, I understand as far as your services go,
- 5:24and again we're talking with four meeks of meeks realty, I also understand
- 5:27that you do you manage properties for other people that may own them. How
- 5:31does that work? Yeah, of course, so obviously outside of our state,
- 5:34it's a very common practice and we were very fortunate to kind of bring
- 5:40that here to the to the Metro Valley. And so if you own a
- 5:43piece of property and you see have rental income potential, obviously we can facilitate
- 5:48a lease for that property, facilitate the the tenant for that property and bringing
- 5:54in we'll manage the process. So we'll get a lease executed on your behalf,
- 5:58collect your rents, do all your accounting, due diligence, and then
- 6:01transfer that those fund see at the end of the month and continue to create
- 6:06a good relationship between us and the tenant and active liaison between between Seth and
- 6:15exactly. Well, I know it's going to vary depending on the individual property.
- 6:18But give me a ballpark. What do you guys charge for that kind
- 6:21of service? Yeah, it's all over the park. It's all over the
- 6:24ballpark. So you know, you look at a commercial property that you may
- 6:27be at, you know, six and a half, seven and a half
- 6:30percent of the rents collected. You may look at a single family home,
- 6:33it's upwards of fifteen percent. So it definitely varies. The size of your
- 6:38portfolio definitely has some factors in with that, and it's it's all dependent.
- 6:45It's more of an all a part special than anything. Talking again with Meeks
- 6:49Meeks Realty to Dave Allen Show and five Ady Live is brought to you part
- 6:51by Morgan and Morgan. If you're injured, hire Morgan to Morgan in America's
- 6:56largest injury law firm, thor if someone would like to invest in some of
- 7:01your properties or like or like you to manage them. As we talked about
- 7:04before, what's the best way to get in touch with you? Yeah,
- 7:09so the best the first and foremost, the best thing to do is just
- 7:12check out our website. So if you go to our website, you're going
- 7:14to go to www dot Meeks dot us. That's going to take you to
- 7:17a landing page. It's going to allow you to go to our reality website
- 7:21and as well as our property management services website. Also, as I said
- 7:28to Rich was scheduled to be with us today, but he's taking care of
- 7:30a of a sick kid right now. I hope that everything goes okay there.
- 7:33But he did want to mention, Uh, he's got quite a presence
- 7:36on Facebook, and I share a lot of what he does on my Facebook
- 7:41page on Dave alland Radio because he does have a just look up Rich the
- 7:46Realtor on Facebook. He cheap plug there or he asked me to put that
- 7:48in there this morning. Sure, but he also here's the thing about it
- 7:53is, it's not just properties. That's not really what he does on his
- 7:56Facebook page. He's actually giving people advice on things on and you know,
- 8:01from home improvement to things that you can do if you're thinking about selling your
- 8:03house, or things you can do if you're thinking about looking into a property
- 8:07or something or something of that nature. Yeah, all those early early stage
- 8:13due diligent items. Rich is very good at He can give you some insight
- 8:16before you if you're thinking about listing a house or thinking about buying a house,
- 8:20he can definitely guide you through the process early on and before you have
- 8:26to make any decisions. And that's obviously at no charge. That's that's definitely
- 8:31one of his specialties. Well, and there's nothing exactly like no charge.
- 8:35We like to hear the term no charge. I got to have a little
- 8:39fun with you this morning thora before we let you go. I understand that
- 8:45you're about to show off your dancing skills for charity. Is that right?
- 8:50You know, it's funny. It's the reason I'm calling you instead of in
- 8:52the studio this morning. We're actually in the middle of dance rehearsal right now,
- 8:56I got my team here and we're rocking and yeah, so we're gonna
- 9:00be Dancing with the Stars in June, and I'll give I'll give a shameless
- 9:05plug whenever you're ready for the so we can get some donations. I'm ready,
- 9:09ma'am. Go ahead, and I'll offer this to any of the teams,
- 9:11by the way, that are competing Dancing with the Stars. But since
- 9:13you're the first one that asks, go right ahead. So we're going to
- 9:16text number seven one seven seven seven. And whenever you text that, you're
- 9:22gonna text dance one, it's gonna go to a great cause. You're going
- 9:26to see me do all kinds of crazy stuff. I'm in here practicing right
- 9:31now and they got me hanging from the ceiling. It's crazy. What who's
- 9:35your partner? So, Bree Lemon is my dancing part Okay, I know
- 9:39Bree very well. Yeah, actually very good friends with her husband. Yeah,
- 9:43so absolutely, So, now are are you in? I know you
- 9:46were a stellar athlete. I do know that, But now what about dancing
- 9:50is that's a totally different thing. No, it's spot on. It's the
- 9:52same. I got to move, I can rock and roll. You get
- 9:56a little confidence issue there, don't you. Man? Well, when actually
- 10:01is the the big Dancing with the Stars event? When is it happening?
- 10:05So the events in June, and so we'll have a few other events prior
- 10:09to to raise some money obviously for a great cause, and that's what it's
- 10:11all about, and then make a fool of myself here in June. But
- 10:16it'll it'll all be good. Well, we wish you the best of luck
- 10:20with that. We wish you and Bree the best of luck with that.
- 10:22And again, if you need any information about anything we talked about, just

- 11:16a couple of texts that came through yesterday that for some reason did not show

- 11:26with the decision over the weekend of the Republican Executive Committee. They had their
- 11:31meeting in Charleston to close the primaries starting in twenty twenty six. Again,
- 11:35if you are an independent voter, you will no longer be able to go
- 11:37in and request a Republican ballot. You will only be able to vote for
- 11:41nonpartisan races your judges, or of education, magistrate, etc. Tex says
- 11:46not sure. I like the decision on independent voters. The party needs to
- 11:50educate voters on the impostors changing parties just to get elected. These people need
- 11:54to get a job in a private sector. Texas Dave. Are there limits
- 12:01on how often? How many times are when you can change your parties?
- 12:05All that information is available on the Secretary of State's website. I will say
- 12:09that there are time frame issues, so many days out from elections when you
- 12:13can change your party. But as far as the number of times you can
- 12:16change party over a lifetime, no, as far as I know there are,
- 12:18there are no restrictions on that. Texas closing the primaries makes sense.
- 12:22Political parties choose their nominees through primaries. That's the most important decision a party
- 12:26could make, and organization's most important decisions should be made by members of that

- 16:32Ryan Thorne is the state director for the West Virginia USDA and he joins us
- 16:36now. Ryan, good morning, Welcome to the show. Hey Dave,
- 16:38good morning, Thanks for having me on this morning. Thank you for being
- 16:41it. First of all, I'm going to ask a really, really dumb
- 16:44question, because that's what I do. Nobody does dumb day, like Dave.
- 16:48What exactly does the us DA do specifically here in West Virginia. That's
- 16:52a that's a great question, Dave. So who are we at USDA Rule
- 16:56Development folks here us and they automatically think, okay, you all inspect me.
- 17:03You helped the SNAP program and commodities, you help farmers. Sure,
- 17:08our sister agencies under the USDA umbrella do all of those things and much more.
- 17:14But at USDA Role Development, I always say that we're the community and
- 17:17economic development arm of the USDA, you know. In short, I always
- 17:22say that we are advocates for investors in and partners to rural communities and the
- 17:26people, businesses, and organizations that make up those communities. You know.
- 17:32Our investments range from anything from basic infrastructure water sewer projects, we have high
- 17:37speed internet projects, housing programs, and then programs that can support small and
- 17:42local businesses. We're talking to Ryan Thorn with the USDA. Now I understand
- 17:48Ryan that you folks who are working with some recent census information that actually came
- 17:53out of the twenty twenty census. I believe here in the Canal val I
- 17:56talk about that a little bit. Yeah, So on our business programs,
- 18:02and we have probably about two dozen programs that can support small businesses and entrepreneurship
- 18:07growth. But for the most part, eligible areas for those programs or areas
- 18:12of fifty thousand when it comes to population fifty thousand or less, and with
- 18:18the implementation of the twenty twenty census data for the first time and probably I
- 18:23want to say the history of those programs, the Kanal Valley is now eligible
- 18:29to participate in those programs with the sort of the city of Charleston, Colleen
- 18:33just below the fifty thousand mark, that opens up small businesses and other organizations
- 18:38to now be eligible for some of those programs. I want to talk about
- 18:42specifically some of those programs. We get people listening to us right now that
- 18:47are saying, well, I mean, and I guess because I've known people,
- 18:49including yourself as worked with the USDA. First thing you think about with
- 18:52USDA's you think farm you know, and we do certainly have those in West
- 18:56Virginia. But you folks have a lot of different types of program that can
- 19:00businesses across the board get into some of those specifically. Yeah, so I'll
- 19:04talk about one. It's our Rural Business Development Grant Program or our BDG.
- 19:11And so this program is designed to support economic and workforce development projects and initiatives.
- 19:17In short, your eligibility your applicants will really be your local economic development
- 19:22authorities, colleges and universities and other nonprofit organizations. And typically those grants range
- 19:30from fifty to one hundred thousand dollars in nature, and in the past we've
- 19:34provided those grants to let's say, for example, the Pendleton County Economic Development
- 19:41Authority received one last year to create a sort of innovation hub and co workspace
- 19:48up in Franklin, Westroginia. For example, in blue Field, the blue
- 19:51Field e DA used one of these grants to help bolster their food truck startup
- 19:56initiative. So it's really brought odd the eligibility of sort of what type of
- 20:03programs we can or what kind of projects that we can fund through that program.
- 20:07But basically, if it has to do with economic development and workforce development
- 20:11job creation, more than likely it would be eligible to compete under that RBDG
- 20:15program. And these are some very very valuable programs that are used and people
- 20:21all have For what I understand and doing a little research on this, Ryan
- 20:23again we're talking to Ryan Forn with the USDA. People have been taking advantage
- 20:27of these. Yeah, for sure, it's very competitive. The RBDG program
- 20:33is very competitive. Last year we probably had close to thirty applications and we're
- 20:40able to aword out about ten awards. We receive a state allocation every year,
- 20:45which ranges in the you know, six to seven hundred thousand dollars range.
- 20:49So typically, like I mentioned before, the grants tend to range in
- 20:52the fifty to one hundred thousand per per project rain in addition to our BD
- 21:00you know a lot of folks think that, and I've heard this a lot
- 21:04throughout my career, is you know, there's got to be grant federal grants
- 21:07for for profit business. That's sort of a myth for the most part.
- 21:11But we do have two programs at USDA Role Development that specifically cater to for
- 21:18profit small businesses, being the DEEP program or the Rural Energy for America Program
- 21:25and the VAPG or the Value Added Producer Grant program. And I can go
- 21:30into a little bit on those programs if that's something you'd like me to do,
- 21:33go ahead, and so our our REEP program or the Rural Energy for
- 21:37America program, there's sort of two tracks to that program. There's the Energy
- 21:42efficiency track and the renewable energy track. And so like I said, uh,
- 21:48local small businesses that meet the definition of a small business from the Small
- 21:52Business Administration are eligible to compete for this program. They can receive grants of
- 21:59up the fifty percent for the project cost, up to five hundred thousand for
- 22:03energy efficiency projects, and up to a million for renewable energy projects. So,
- 22:08for example, you have a let's say a warehousing company who's building fifty
- 22:15years old. They decide they want to upgrade the lighting, the windows,
- 22:18the insulation, things of that nature. They can potentially apply for this program
- 22:25and get a grant of up to five hundred thousand dollars to complete those those
- 22:27renovations to make their building more energy efficient and in turn saving utility costs.
- 22:33Now we're talking you've been talking primarily about grants, but there are also loans
- 22:37available too, is that right? That is correct? The reprogram that is
- 22:41sort of a grant loan combination. So if you exceed your the max on
- 22:48the grand side, you can also apply for a loan guarantee UH in order
- 22:52for us to be able to kind of fund up to seventy five percent of
- 22:56the total project cost and on the on the value added producer grant side.
- 23:02This is a really unique program where let's say you have a farmer who's growing
- 23:07tomatoes. Everybody talks about how great this farmer salsa is. Well that the
- 23:11Value Added Producer Grant program to be utilized to help that farmer commercialize that that
- 23:17salsa, get it to market. It can help do feasibility studies, help
- 23:21with marketing, packaging, and even in some instances by equipment to help prepare
- 23:26that. And another example, let's say a beef farmer, you know,
- 23:30raising cows for beef, decides he wants to create a beef turkey company to
- 23:36you know, sell his product at all your locally owned far More stores and
- 23:40other convenience stores and grocery stores. They could use this program to buy you
- 23:44know, a commercial dehydrator to do the marketing to get that product to market.
- 23:48So it's really a unique program where it's we can provide grants of up
- 23:53to seventy five thousand on the sort of to do studies and then two hundred
- 23:59and fift two thousands actually produced the value added product. What's It's all good
- 24:07stuff and I'll tell you it, Ryan. One of the things about it
- 24:10is over the last i don't know, ten, fifteen, twenty years or
- 24:11so, there seems to be more of an emphasis on a lot of these
- 24:15things. When it comes to you mentioned getting these products into stores, into
- 24:18places like convenience stores, grocery stores. I'm talking about a lot of West
- 24:22Virginia products, you know, homegrown, farm to table kind of stuff for
- 24:25be it at Capital Market or local farmers markets or things of that nature.
- 24:29I mean, you've really got a big market for this stuff out there now.
- 24:33Yeah. I think one thing that maybe the COVID pandemic showed us is
- 24:38how important local food security may be. Where folks went to their grocery stores
- 24:44maybe saw some shelves empty because it depended on products from across the country from
- 24:51you know, other countries in general. And for example, a Mountain Steer,
- 24:56a company out of Greenbrier County, you know, sol this and join
- 25:00the pandemic and they actually applied for VAPGH to produce and process locally raised and
- 25:07processed meat products. And so this is incredibly valuable not only for our food
- 25:15security, but also to help these farmers and small businesses grow their product line
- 25:18and become generate more revenue and become more profitable. You know, we've been
- 25:23talking to Ryan Thorne, who is the State Director at the USDA Rural Development
- 25:29Division. Ryan, you've thrown a lot of information out at us Man,
- 25:32where can people learn more about all these things? Sure? Well, we

- 26:44favor by prohibiting corporations from owning single family homes. Look around at the cities
- 26:49having housing issues. Corporations owning single family homes is at the root of the
- 26:55issue. I've not really studied it that much myself. I don't I'd have
- 27:00to do a little bit more research on that. I do know that out
- 27:04of state landholders and people that have the deeds on out of state proper or
- 27:11that live out of state are a major issue. I don't think anybody would
- 27:15argue with that. I don't know about corporations though, I mean, it's

- 31:18about it. Good morning, sir, welcome back to the show. Morning
- 31:22Dave, Thanks for having me. Thank you for being here now. If
- 31:25you're a foodie like I am, and the boss is producing the show today,
- 31:27Dale Cooper, it is the most wonderful time of the year in Charleston.
- 31:30Oh, I share your enthusiasm. This is something that a lot of
- 31:33people look forward to, particularly the owners and operators of local restaurants. It's
- 31:38traditionally a slow time of year in the restaurant business, so this promotion is
- 31:41meant to just shine a little bit of light on locally owned establishments and get
- 31:47the public thinking about eating out again after the holidays and after the credit card
- 31:49bills, and once they've shaken off their New Year's resolution, so it's time
- 31:55to eat, Time to make your reservations. Indeed, now I have the
- 31:57graphic posted in fact, I just did it again at the top of the
- 32:01show. It's on Dave Allen Radio and Facebook and also The Dave Allen Show
- 32:06on XE RTIs is fromly known as Twitter, so you can take a look
- 32:08at all of the restaurants that are participating and the prices for those restaurants,
- 32:14and you've got some some pretty heavy hitters up to the plate, no doubt.
- 32:19We're really fortunate to have sixteen participating restaurants this year and including some very
- 32:23well known, well established venues around town. I'll quickly read through the list.
- 32:28Ten ten Bridge Barcada's at the Fort, Bricks and Barrels, Dem,
- 32:31Two Brothers and a Grill that's the downtown location, only Ichibon pan Asian Restaurantia
- 32:37Brutzi So Host Capital Market, The Lookout, Tidewater Grill, Bridge Road Bistro,
- 32:42Sam's Uptown Cafe, Fernbank Public House, DT Prime, Volsted Room,
- 32:46Aidelphia and Black Sheep Burrito. And again, the buy in from these people
- 32:53is really incredible and it's great to see. Oh. I totally agree.
- 32:58These restaurants really make a to do it up and put their best foot forward
- 33:00this week. Each year it ends up being a really significant and busy week
- 33:07for every participating restaurant. We've got two first timers this year, which I
- 33:12always like to mention. Fernbank Public House, which is on Bridge Road in
- 33:15South Hills and then the Volstead Room, which is beneath ground level on Dickinson
- 33:20Street. I hope they know what they're in for because Restaurant Week usually brings
- 33:24the crowd, especially for brand new venues. Talking to Dicket's a goal to
- 33:29get a buzz foods. Talk about the history of this event. Sure,
- 33:32yeah, this is so. We started this event eleven years ago. This
- 33:37is actually the tenth event. We took a year off for social distancing,
- 33:39but it was born in twenty fourteen. We had actually planned the event before
- 33:49anyone had ever thought or dreamed of a water crisis like we had in Charleston,
- 33:52and so we you know, it was November and December and we said,
- 33:54hey, let's do this at the end of January, and we had
- 33:57everything lined up, including eight restaurants that first year. And then the water
- 34:00crisis hit and the public, you know, the public stayed out of restaurants.
- 34:06Heck, the Health Department ordered restaurants closed, and so there were days
- 34:10where restaurants had no revenue, no understanding of what they could and couldn't do
- 34:16it. It was an absolute low point in the local restaurant business. And
- 34:20then once the Health Department said Okay, it's safe to reopen, follow these
- 34:24standards. Let's get the public back out. This plan was already sort of
- 34:30baked in, and so it gave the public a good reason to come out
- 34:32and really support local restaurants, really turn up the tips, as they say,
- 34:37and take care of the hospitality and weight staff that had been really struggling
- 34:42for a couple of weeks. And it just snowballed after that. So,
- 34:45yeah, I didn't realize. I guess maybe I just didn't learn my lest
- 34:47on when I had union show last year. But I didn't. I mean,
- 34:50I knew this was kind of born out of the water crisis, but
- 34:52I didn't realize this was actually already in place or in planning stage before the
- 34:57water crisis. Well you're not alone. I mean most people think that I
- 34:59thought it actually came out of the water. Yeah, we weren't. We
- 35:00weren't. It wasn't a response to the water crisis. We had already thought,
- 35:05Hey, this could be a good thing for Charleston, and then the
- 35:07fact that it came that it happened when it did just made it just brought
- 35:10it into more people's awareness and made it the successful annual event that it still
- 35:14is. And I know that a lot of these restaurants they're all friends,
- 35:17you know, behind the scene. What I would think most of them are
- 35:20anyway, because they like to support local and hey, if I can't get
- 35:22you in my place, then go down the street and see our friends down
- 35:25the street. But there's a little bit of competitiveness that goes into this as
- 35:29well. Oh, I'm sure you know. We ask restaurants to share anonymously
- 35:34share their results at the end of each promotion, just so we have an
- 35:37idea of like how well we did. There's a couple of operators who always
- 35:39ask me if they quote unquote one and I tell there's everybody wins in this
- 35:45event. But you're right. I think these these small businesses see this as
- 35:50a chance to support each other. There's a lot of stories of the owners
- 35:53and operators of one restaurant taking a big crowd to a different restaurant during Restaurant
- 35:58Week. The fact is that a good, healthy restaurant scene is good for
- 36:04everyone in the business. And you know, I'll bring it up. Paul
- 36:07Smith is having so much success on the regional and national stage. That's good
- 36:10for everyone, right. That helps people think of Charleston as a town with
- 36:15good restaurants, and it's true, and so Paul's notoriety and success is helping
- 36:22people bring new faces to the area and people think about eating out. And
- 36:27Coop is producing the show, as I said, and Chef Paul is a
- 36:30regular on the Hotline segment with Coop and weekly, Yeah, Chef Pall comes
- 36:35on. He's been one for I mean since the beginning we started doing the
- 36:37show. Chef Ball and I were doing some media when he still worked at
- 36:42Bud Food Services when he was the corporate chef over there. With Chef Paul
- 36:45was coming on here and he started sort of his career and outreach and something
- 36:50he always wanted to do. And yeah, he's been a great ambassador for
- 36:52that. And people made the mistake, I think after the water crisis that
- 36:55the two were related, and they really was, and it was just a
- 36:59it was just a good timing as far as getting people back out into the
- 37:01community after the water crisis. Are actually is when they were still suffering through
- 37:06the water crisis. It was a good timing for that. It's been such
- 37:08a fantastic event that we've had here ever since then. It's one of my
- 37:13favorite times a year, just like you talk about Dickinson. And I'll say
- 37:15this too. It's all well and good. We can do all the pr
- 37:19on it. We can help out with it. I know, my gad.
- 37:21The food gat Steven Keith does a great job over at the over at
- 37:23HD meeting and the gazette mail. But without a buy in from the public,
- 37:28this thing wouldn't take off. And the public, not only in the
- 37:31Kadau Valley but from all over the state comes in for this thing, so
- 37:35I think they deserve some kudos as well. Oh, we are so lucky
- 37:37to have the support and the attention that we get from you in the station
- 37:42and from Stephen Keith in the newspaper. As you said, But you're right,
- 37:45it's the public who like and share the Facebook posts and get excited about,
- 37:49you know, pouring through the public menus and deciding where they want to
- 37:52eat. It's the public discussion that really makes the event fun. And that's
- 37:58sort of an annual tradition for a lot of folks. They wait and they
- 38:00beg us for when or the menu is going to be released, and then
- 38:04the day that they come out that's always the most popular, most viewed download
- 38:07or post of anything that we do, and people are anxious to sit down
- 38:10and compare one restaurant's menus to another, what looks the best? Where are
- 38:14we going to go? And then the most important thing is to make those
- 38:16reservations because you may think that in the middle of the week in late January
- 38:21and Charleston, West Virginia, you don't need a restaurant reservation, but this
- 38:23week you do. And it's important because it helps the restaurants plan for your
- 38:28presence and know how much food and how much staff to have on hand.
- 38:31And again, would we talk about the weather always plays a big factor into
- 38:35this because at the end of Jay, I mean, look at where we
- 38:37were this time two weeks ago. Well this week, you know, it's
- 38:40been kind of nasty with rain or whatever. But as we head toward end,
- 38:44the weak temperatures are going to be in the fifties and there's going to
- 38:46be a whole lot of people that are going to be heading out, you
- 38:50know, call it cabin fever, call it I'm done with the New Year's
- 38:53resolutions, whatever the case may be. There's going to be a whole lot
- 38:55of people going out. That's why, Niggodson, you really need to make
- 39:00those reservations. Yeah, we really lucked out with the weather and the forecast
- 39:04and the timing this year. I wish I could take credit for it.
- 39:06It's just dumb luck. But yeah, I think that we're going to have
- 39:08nice clear nights this week. And there's a lot of people that have not
- 39:12left the house in two weeks. I'm probably one of them. But it's
- 39:15a good time to get out, try a new restaurant or try your old
- 39:19favorite, meet up with a friend, join a coworker, take some family.
- 39:22But it's a great atmosphere this week in Charleston. And I always like
- 39:27to say the food tastes better in a crowded restaurant. It just does when
- 39:30the atmosphere is busy and lively and your server is, you know, working
- 39:35twice as many tables as they usually do. Everybody rises to the occasion and
- 39:38so it's fun thing to be a part of. But Dave Allance Chilling five
- 39:40any line brought to you a part of our Bridge Valley. Are you interested
- 39:44in proving your company's IT workforce? What did you know that Bridge Valley offers
- 39:47custom tailored IT training to bridge the skills gap at Bridge Valley you can train

- 39:53can also supply us to go to graduates and apprenticeships for your company. Visit
- 39:57Bridge Valley do edu slash apprenticeships today, you know. And we kind of
- 40:00touched on this with the success of Chef Paul and so many others in the
- 40:04area led by him, of course. And by the way, congratulations to
- 40:07Chef Paul. He's a Beard nominee again second consecutive year. But Charleston really
- 40:13is Digotson becoming a food destination. I mean, you think about those and
- 40:17I'm not saying we're on we're on part with like New Orleans or something right
- 40:22now. But again, people for this restaurant, we in order to make
- 40:25it successful, we want all the local people here. But it's becoming a
- 40:29food destination for people to come in from Morgantown or Martinsburg or Columbus or whatever.
- 40:35They're coming here. It's absolutely true, and it's about time, right.
- 40:37I think we're getting our moment in the sun, and Paul has a
- 40:39lot to do with that. There's a lot of evidence that people are traveling
- 40:45a couple of hours to eat in Paul's restaurants and they're spending the night and
- 40:49they're seeing what else the town has to offer. This is how you build
- 40:52a tourist and hospitality culture, and it's a great thing. But anybody who
- 40:58comes to Charleston for the first time, if they're lucky enough to have it
- 41:00happen this week, they're going to find lots of great options, lots of
- 41:05affordable but very high end menus, plenty to eat, great service model,
- 41:08and a town that's full of great, locally owned independent restaurants. Now,
- 41:13where is the best place? I know it was printed in the paper,
- 41:15but where is the best place for people to go? Look at the actual
- 41:17menus? So there is a great rich website that has all the menus and
- 41:22the addresses and phone numbers to call and make your reservations. And I would
- 41:27suggest googling Charleston, WV Restaurant Week and that'll get you where you need to
- 41:31go. But of course there's a content rich Facebook page and an Instagram page
- 41:36that gets a lot of traffic just because there's beautiful pictures. That's what people
- 41:38love to look at, the pictures of the food, and so that'll get
- 41:42your mouth watering. So anything better than pictures of pictures of food in my
- 41:45opinion, Dickinson, I appreciate you being here. We wish all the restaurants
- 41:47the best luck. Again, just run down the list for us of the
- 41:50restaurants that are participating. Sure ten ten Bridge, Barcada Is at the Fort,
- 41:53Bricks and Barrels, Dem two Brothers in a Grill, Eachibon, pan
- 41:57Asian Restaurantia Brutzi So hosts Capital Market, The Lookout, Tidewater Grill, Bridge

- 42:14We have three restaurants on that list of sixteen that have participated in every
- 42:17year of this event, and that is SO host Capital Market, Bridge Road
- 42:22Bistro and Each Bond on Capitol Street. We really appreciate their you know,

- 46:06I want to get this out there. Today is National Help America Vote Day.
- 46:09Now. The whole idea behind this is to try to get more people
- 46:13basically to sign up to be poll workers. All fifty five counties in the
- 46:16state of West Virginia are in desperate need of poll workers. About eighty four
- 46:20hundred are needed. And yes it's a long day, but depending on the
- 46:27particular county we're talking about, poll workers can make upwards of two hundred to
- 46:30two hundred and fifty bucks a day. So what you need to do if
- 46:34you're interested being a poll worker, contact your local county clerk's office and they
- 46:37will probably put you in touch with the respective executive committee. It's a Democratic
- 46:40Republican executive committees in your county, and it's telling me I want to be
- 46:45a poll worker. And again there's a need, there is a desperate need
- 46:50for poll workers in the state of West Virginia, not just today help America
- 46:54Vote Day, but as we get ready for the campaign season. So I
- 46:58would say, get in touch with with your county clerk and they'll put you
- 47:01in touch with the executive committees of the different parties and put you to work.
- 47:06I mean, it's not a bad day's work. I mean, you
- 47:07know, polls are opening to West Virginia six thirty am to seven thirty pm.
- 47:12You arrive unseen about five thirty, normally out the door by nine nine
- 47:15thirty, maybe a little less and maybe a little bit more. And again,
- 47:17two hundred and hundred fifty bucks a day is what pole workers get paid
- 47:22in West Virginia. Tech says corporations shouldn't own single family homes because they drive
- 47:28up the price for real estate and make home ownership unattainable for people who don't
- 47:31have the financial resources the corporations have. Also, it leads to a perpetual
- 47:37renter class. I heard a reason to move to West Virginia or the communities.
- 47:40What kind of communities do you get from corporate home ownership and perpetual renter
- 47:44classes, it says a Texter Hoppy Kirchiwal will be coming up a ten oh
- 47:50six with talk Line. First up on the show is Riley Gaines. Riley
- 47:53Gaines, of course, is a former big time college swimmer. She was
- 47:58in University of Kentucky. She was at the Cappitol yesterday as a guest of
- 48:00the governor. She is men an outspoken critic of allowing transgender women to compete
- 48:07against biological women in sports. Now, she spoke yesterday in support of the
- 48:14Women's Bill of Rights as it's called moving now the legislature. It's house built
- 48:19fifty two to forty three. In short, it would add the words female,
- 48:25woman and mother into the West Virginia law that is modeled after independent women's
- 48:31voices. That's the group's own model that they put out Now. Representatives in
- 48:36addition to Riley Gains from that group also joined the governor at the Capitol yesterday
- 48:40when he announced his endorsement of the bill. And according to info from the
- 48:45group if h if HB fifty two forty three passes. The Independent Women's Voters
- 48:52Women's Bill of Rights would define sex based terms used in state law and declare
- 48:58that the state has an important interest in protecting single sex spaces and to ensure
- 49:01the accuracy of public data collection. It would also give their words a clear
- 49:08definition of what a man is and what a woman is. Now. Riley
- 49:15Gaines really got involved in all this when she faced one Leah Thomas, who
- 49:21was a swimmer from the University of Pennsylvania who is transgender. Now on the
- 49:27other side, the ACLU of West Virginia is speaking out against the bill.
- 49:30The ACLU called it the bill quote bad for all women and if the bill
- 49:37passes. I'm kind of paraphrasing here. This is their words, West Virginia
- 49:42women are both separate and unequal. That is again if this bill passes.
- 49:46Again. They are saying that that would be the case of the bill passes.
- 49:51And they're also saying, quote, shame on a governor, and that
- 49:53women want access to healthcare and equal pay. We don't want to micromanage where
- 49:59people can go to the bathroom, to kick trans people out of homeless shelters,
- 50:02etc. Et cetera. Fairness West Virginia also speaking out against the bill.
- 50:08The bill is currently in the House Judiciary Committee, and we need to
- 50:13pass both the House and the Senate before he goes to the governor for his
- 50:16decision. And again Riley Gains, who is kind of at the center,
- 50:20kind of a spokesperson for all this, she was on, she was with
- 50:22the governor. You have today, she'll be the first guest on with Hobby
- 50:24coming up at ten o six this morning. Text says do not work into
- 50:30polls. I did it and I was harassed by GOP during COVID. Well
- 50:35that's the case, that's a crime. And if that is the case,
- 50:37then you probably not the victim, shamier. You probably should have reported that
- 50:43because harassment of poll workers is a crime in the state of West Virginia.
- 50:45So texture that happens again, called the police because it's crime to harass poleworkers.
- 50:52I'd like to get into the parking building business. Well. Jeff Jenkins
- 50:57with a story post to wv metronews dot com. Judge Dave Hardy has ruled
- 51:00the Town Center parking garages can be auctioned off, probably sometime in April or
- 51:06May. The garages were owned by the Charleston Building Commission, but they've been
- 51:09in receivership since last fall. That receiver is Boyd real Estate Resources, and
- 51:15the ask Judge Hardy to allow for the auction so the investors in the garages
- 51:19would get some of the money that's owed to them. We're talking about somewhere
- 51:21between twelve and fifteen million dollars that they're owed since the mall was open in
- 51:25the mid eighties. KURA, that is, the Charleston Urban Renewal Authority,
- 51:30has owned the ground where the garages said. It all gets kind of complicated
- 51:34now. The actual mall, of course, is owned by the whole group
- 51:37who could bet on the garages. The proposed Capital Sports Complex also could bid,
- 51:42or one of the local hotels, MARYETTMBC, Switechs or others could also
- 51:44bid as well. Jeff as the story post to wv Metronews dot com tech
- 51:50says that Bill is a wonderful scientific bill as a Texter. All right,
- 51:54gotta go. My producer was Dale Cooper, Thank you so much. Restaurant
