- 0:00Speaker 1: Lux presents Hollywood.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Lever Brothers Company, the makers of Lux Toilet Soap, bring
- 0:11Speaker 2: you the Lux Radio Theater, starring Ray Moland and Colleen
- 0:16Speaker 2: Townsend in It Happens Every Spring. Tonight, the Lux Radio
- 0:20Speaker 2: Theater comes to you from Hollywood, as usual, but your
- 0:23Speaker 2: producer speaks to you from.
- 0:24Speaker 1: New York City. Ladies and gentlemen, your producer, Mr. William Keeley.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Greetings, ladies and gentlemen. For weeks, excitement in baseball's big
- 0:37Speaker 3: league pennant races has been at fever pitch. Yesterday, however,
- 0:41Speaker 3: the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers were crowned
- 0:45Speaker 3: champions after two of the toughest fights in years. And Wednesday,
- 0:49Speaker 3: the great national sporting classic, the World Series, gets underway.
- 0:54Speaker 3: So tonight, the Lux Radio Theater, quite appropriately, presents a
- 0:57Speaker 3: delightful story about baseball. It's the 20th century Fox picture.
- 1:02Speaker 3: It happens every spring. Heading our cast is Ray Moland
- 1:06Speaker 3: in his original role. And with him is the charming
- 1:10Speaker 3: Colleen Townsend, who lends romance to the big leagues. Baseball
- 1:15Speaker 3: is a great American institution, as is our own Lux
- 1:18Speaker 3: Toilet Soap. And in Hollywood, the big league for beautiful women,
- 1:23Speaker 3: Lux Soap has a championship batting average. Nine out of
- 1:26Speaker 3: ten screen stars use it. Now, for your enjoyment, here
- 1:31Speaker 3: is Act One of It Happens Every Spring, starring Ray
- 1:34Speaker 3: Moland as Vernon Simpson and Colleen Townsend as Debbie.
- 1:50Speaker 1: It's a fine.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Spring afternoon, and on the campus of a Midwestern college,
- 1:55Speaker 2: the daughter of the college president is walking with her
- 1:58Speaker 2: favorite professor.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Oh, yes, by far her paper professor.
- 2:04Speaker 4: But what is it, Vernon? Don't you feel well, darling? Well,
- 2:08Speaker 4: you're acting so strangely.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I am?
- 2:10Speaker 4: And what was the idea of bringing your portable radio
- 2:13Speaker 4: to class, tuning in the baseball game in the middle
- 2:16Speaker 4: of your lecture?
- 2:17Speaker 1: Well, Debbie, I wanted to find out how St. Louis
- 2:19Speaker 1: was doing. Now, why? Oh, I don't know. Just an impulse,
- 2:22Speaker 1: I suppose. I'm not that interested in baseball.
- 2:25Speaker 4: I didn't know you were even remotely interested in baseball. Oh, Vernon,
- 2:29Speaker 4: you've become so terribly vague lately.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Oh, not about you, Debbie. Why, you're almost everything I
- 2:34Speaker 1: ever think about. Almost? What else can I say?
- 2:38Speaker 4: Something definite, Vernon. Something positive. About us.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Oh, but that's been out of the question. As a
- 2:43Speaker 1: professor of chemistry, I make barely enough to live on.
- 2:46Speaker 1: And your father, well, he's made it quite clear that
- 2:49Speaker 1: for anyone in my financial situation to even discuss marriage.
- 2:53Speaker 1: And he's right. Any man who thinks of getting married
- 2:55Speaker 1: on an income like mine is a menace to society.
- 2:57Speaker 1: But just wait until your father finds out.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Finds out what, dear?
- 3:01Speaker 1: My experiment in the laboratory. Oh, Vernon.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Vernon, you mean you've done it? It's finished?
- 3:06Speaker 1: Just about. And I haven't told you the best part, Debbie.
- 3:08Speaker 1: My nitrocyclohexane compound will have great commercial value. You'll finish
- 3:12Speaker 1: your postgraduate work in two months. We get married, Debbie.
- 3:14Speaker 1: We buy a house, maybe even a car.
- 3:16Speaker 4: Oh, Vernon. But who's going to pay you all this money?
- 3:20Speaker 1: The Norworth Laboratories. For years, they've been trying to develop
- 3:23Speaker 1: a chemical that will keep insects away from wood. A biophobic,
- 3:26Speaker 1: they call it. Well, they seem to think that my
- 3:27Speaker 1: compound is the very thing they've been searching for.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Vernon Simpson. The man who discovered the biophobic. Oh, darling,
- 3:35Speaker 4: I'm so proud of you.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Of course, we can't expect any positive results right away,
- 3:38Speaker 1: but we... Hey, wait a minute. Look, over there in
- 3:42Speaker 1: back of the lab building. They're playing baseball.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Well, the boys play baseball there every day.
- 3:47Speaker 1: They do? Oh, well, I guess I've been too busy
- 3:50Speaker 1: to notice.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Well, you're not going to stop to notice them now.
- 3:53Speaker 4: Come on, Vernon, we're going to that lab.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Debbie.
- 3:57Speaker 5: Debbie, look.
- 3:58Speaker 1: It's even better than I thought.
- 3:59Speaker 4: Oh, it is?
- 4:00Speaker 1: Look, the white precipitate. Hallelujah, it's there. Oh, Debbie, you
- 4:03Speaker 1: just don't realize what this means. Right here, right here
- 4:06Speaker 1: in this flask is the result of five years of work.
- 4:09Speaker 1: That flask holds my fortune, Debbie. It holds you and
- 4:12Speaker 1: money and everything I ever hoped to... No, it couldn't happen.
- 4:19Speaker 1: It couldn't.
- 4:20Speaker 4: A baseball. They knocked it through the window.
- 4:23Speaker 6: Oh.
- 4:23Speaker 7: Oh, Vernon, look.
- 4:24Speaker 4: It smashed half your equipment. Give me a rag, darling.
- 4:27Speaker 1: I'll... Oh, let it alone.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Well, Vernon.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Don't you understand? It smashed, destroyed everything.
- 4:33Speaker 4: No, I don't understand. You still have your formula. Now,
- 4:37Speaker 4: how long would it take to make another solution?
- 4:39Speaker 1: How long? Why, just one of those compounds alone took
- 4:42Speaker 1: five weeks to crystallize, and they're all in sequence. I
- 4:44Speaker 1: can't make the second until I finish the first. Oh.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Oh, darling, I'm so sorry.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Why, I ran some of those reactions 30 and 40
- 4:51Speaker 1: times before I could get enough stuff to make the
- 4:52Speaker 1: next step. Now I've got to start from scratch again,
- 4:56Speaker 1: do it all over, step by step. It'll take months.
- 4:59Speaker 4: And that wonderful precipitate. Isn't there any way you could
- 5:02Speaker 4: filter it out and save it?
- 5:04Speaker 1: That liquid? Why, it's just a hodgepodge of compounds. I
- 5:07Speaker 1: couldn't even figure out what's in it, let alone filter it. Well...
- 5:12Speaker 1: I suppose I'd better clean up this mess.
- 5:14Speaker 4: Can't I help?
- 5:15Speaker 1: I'd rather you run along, Debbie.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Vernon.
- 5:17Speaker 1: It's just another bad break. There's nothing you can say,
- 5:20Speaker 1: nothing I can say.
- 5:21Speaker 4: Now, darling, you mustn't feel that way.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Oh, Debbie, please, not now. I'm just not up to it.
- 5:27Speaker 4: All right, Vernon. I'll see you.
- 5:33Speaker 8: Later.
- 5:33Speaker 1: It isn't fair. It just isn't right. Just because some
- 5:37Speaker 1: kids knock a baseball through a window. Why my window?
- 5:41Speaker 1: Why couldn't it have been... That's funny. What sort of
- 5:46Speaker 1: a baseball is this? Oh, now, wait a minute. Now
- 5:51Speaker 1: I'm starting to see things. But it's doing it again.
- 5:56Speaker 1: This baseball is allergic to wood. What's happened here? What's happened?
- 6:01Speaker 1: What's happened?
- 6:05Speaker 2: Notes regarding amazing reaction of baseball. Baseball had become saturated
- 6:09Speaker 2: in mixture of chemicals. As I started to clean laboratory,
- 6:13Speaker 2: placed baseball on metal table. Baseball started to roll down
- 6:17Speaker 2: the table.
- 6:18Speaker 1: On table was wooden filing box. As baseball rolled toward box,
- 6:22Speaker 1: it suddenly veered off, away from wooden box. Have repeated
- 6:27Speaker 1: process with all sorts of wooden objects. It appears that
- 6:30Speaker 1: chemical has made base for repellent to anything made of wood.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Have salvaged enough liquid to fill two pint bottles and
- 6:37Speaker 1: am arranging a very interesting experiment for tomorrow morning. and
- 6:51Speaker 1: doing rather sadly in organic chemistry. You're aware of that. Oh, yes, Professor,
- 6:55Speaker 1: but there's... Well, I understand you both play baseball. Varsity
- 6:59Speaker 1: pitcher and catcher, right?
- 7:01Speaker 5: Well, I guess maybe baseball's been taking up too much
- 7:04Speaker 5: of our time.
- 7:05Speaker 1: No doubt. Well, I'd hate to flunk you. You see,
- 7:07Speaker 1: I used to play a little baseball myself. Oh, you did, huh? Oh,
- 7:11Speaker 1: just a little. We had sort of a sandlot team
- 7:13Speaker 1: back home, and then, of course, in the Army. Anyway,
- 7:16Speaker 1: I thought I'd better give you boys a little tutoring,
- 7:19Speaker 1: see if we can't improve your grades. I say, that's
- 7:21Speaker 1: sure swell of you, Professor. And in return, I was
- 7:24Speaker 1: wondering if you'd do something for me and keep it
- 7:26Speaker 1: strictly confidential. Oh, we'd be glad to, Professor. All right,
- 7:29Speaker 1: then meet me on the baseball field tomorrow morning at
- 7:31Speaker 1: 5 o'clock. 5 o'clock? In the morning? You heard me. Oh,
- 7:35Speaker 1: and bring a lot of baseballs. Now, sit down. I'll
- 7:39Speaker 1: try to teach you a little chemistry. Well, good morning, boys.
- 7:49Speaker 1: I see you're right on time, exactly 5 o'clock. Yeah, a.m. Well,
- 7:53Speaker 1: I don't want anyone to see us. Now, here's what
- 7:56Speaker 1: I'd like to do. Isabel, take your baton stand at
- 7:58Speaker 1: home plate. Okay, Professor. Schmidt, put on your catcher's mask.
- 8:02Speaker 1: I'll try tossing in a few, okay? Oh, sure, sure, okay.
- 8:06Speaker 1: So this is why he got us up at 5 o'clock,
- 8:08Speaker 1: so he could play pitcher. But he can't really be nuts,
- 8:11Speaker 1: or they wouldn't let him teach. Well, it's one way
- 8:15Speaker 1: of passing chemistry. Hey, shut up now. We gotta humor him.
- 8:18Speaker 7: Now, if you're ready, Isbell, and don't hesitate to hit
- 8:20Speaker 7: the ball.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Oh, don't worry. I'll hit it. All righty, Professor. Right
- 8:25Speaker 1: down the groove. Well, here I go.
- 8:29Speaker 7: Ah, that's some hit, Isbell. Nice work.
- 8:32Speaker 9: Ah, never mind, Professor. We'll get him on this next one.
- 8:35Speaker 9: Feed him another curve.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:38Speaker 7: Look at that ball go. Too bad I didn't have
- 8:41Speaker 7: an outfielder in my class. Why, it's over the fence.
- 8:43Speaker 4: Yeah, isn't it?
- 8:45Speaker 1: Are you nuts? I told you to humor him. Start
- 8:48Speaker 1: striking out. Strike out nothing. Where does he get off
- 8:50Speaker 1: thinking he can pitch?
- 8:51Speaker 7: Come on, Professor.
- 8:52Speaker 9: Let's have another one. I, um, I'll try a fast one. Oh,
- 8:58Speaker 9: don't let her bother you, Professor. You're just warming up.
- 9:01Speaker 7: And you don't mind if I try a few more?
- 9:03Speaker 1: You throw them, I'll hit them. Use your bean this time.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Bunt one. Okay, okay. Give him the old whizzer, Professor.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Right over the old plate.
- 9:12Speaker 7: Ready, Isbell?
- 9:13Speaker 1: Don't worry, I'm ready.
- 9:16Speaker 9: Wow, did you see the hop on that ball? Hey,
- 9:19Speaker 9: that's a regular dipsy doodle you got there, Professor. How'd
- 9:21Speaker 9: you do it?
- 9:22Speaker 7: Result of a great deal of scientific research.
- 9:25Speaker 9: Okay, give him another. Let's see the old pepper in
- 9:28Speaker 9: there now. Right down the old groove now, Professor.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Well, missed it again. Wow, that's making it hop in there,
- 9:34Speaker 1: prop old boy, old boy.
- 9:35Speaker 7: He certainly swung at it, didn't he?
- 9:38Speaker 1: Hit this one, will you? Now he thinks you're faking.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Who's faking?
- 9:41Speaker 7: I'll try a nice slow serve, Isabel.
- 9:44Speaker 1: And hit it, will you? Hit it.
- 9:47Speaker 7: Well, how do you like that?
- 9:48Speaker 1: Calls his pitch and strikes them out. Now, let's see, Isabel.
- 9:52Speaker 1: You hit three consecutive pitches and you missed three. Statistically, therefore,
- 9:56Speaker 1: I've obtained all the information possible. Unless, of course, I
- 9:59Speaker 1: pitch several hundred more balls. Thank you, gentlemen, and good day.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Statistics yet? Hey, how do you like that, Garth? that
- 10:09Speaker 1: the test was eminently successful. Of course, what Isbell and
- 10:13Speaker 1: Schmidt did not know was that before making the last
- 10:16Speaker 1: three pitches, I had placed in my pitcher's glove a
- 10:18Speaker 1: little pad of cotton soaked with a chemical solution, and
- 10:21Speaker 1: that in my glove was a small hole allowing contact
- 10:24Speaker 1: of the chemical with the baseball. Well, I'd better call
- 10:27Speaker 1: on Dr. Greenleaf right away.
- 10:29Speaker 7: Emergency burn.
- 10:37Speaker 1: What emergency? I don't understand. Well, a wonderful opportunity has
- 10:40Speaker 1: just presented itself, Dr.
- 10:41Speaker 6: Greenleaf.
- 10:42Speaker 1: It may not work out, but I'd like a leave
- 10:44Speaker 1: of absence starting immediately. Leave of absence? But for how long?
- 10:48Speaker 1: I don't know, sir. Indefinitely? I can't explain it, Dr. Greenleaf.
- 10:52Speaker 1: That is, I can, but scientifically I can't explain it
- 10:55Speaker 1: at all. You mean it has something to do with
- 10:57Speaker 1: your experiment? Yes, sir, but unless I get a chance
- 10:59Speaker 1: to demonstrate it... Demonstrations, eh? Lectures of some kind? Well, no,
- 11:04Speaker 1: not exactly. Well, what are you going to do? Take
- 11:08Speaker 1: it to some commercial laboratory like the one you mentioned?
- 11:11Speaker 1: What was it now? Norworth Laboratory, sir. Well, then, why
- 11:15Speaker 1: is the time indefinite? Well, Dr. Greenleaf, if I don't
- 11:18Speaker 1: leave immediately, I'm going to miss my train. All right, Vernon.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Go on. Go ahead and catch your train. I'll have Dr.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Fuller take over your class. Oh, thank you, sir. Oh,
- 11:25Speaker 1: I guess Debbie isn't awake yet, is she? I hardly
- 11:28Speaker 1: think so. Well, will you tell her I said goodbye
- 11:29Speaker 1: and that she'll hear from me soon? And thanks again, Dr. Greenleaf. Oh, taxi, taxi.
- 11:37Speaker 8: Where to, mister?
- 11:38Speaker 1: Uh, the baseball park, and hurry, please. What's your rush, mister?
- 11:41Speaker 1: The game don't start till this afternoon. Well, I didn't
- 11:43Speaker 1: come all the way to St. Louis to watch a
- 11:44Speaker 1: baseball game. Take me to the manager's office. Jimmy Dillon, huh? Hey,
- 11:47Speaker 1: you a friend of his, chum? Well, I hope to be,
- 11:49Speaker 1: and be careful of that suitcase. There's some bottles in it. But, Mr. Dolan,
- 11:58Speaker 1: as manager of the St. Louis baseball team, this can
- 12:01Speaker 1: mean a great deal to you. Now, look. Look, I'm
- 12:02Speaker 1: trying to be nice, see?
- 12:04Speaker 5: Number one, I don't see anybody on days when we're
- 12:05Speaker 5: playing games. Number two, I got to get out there
- 12:07Speaker 5: and watch bat and practice.
- 12:08Speaker 1: And number three... I'm not asking for favors, Mr. Dolan.
- 12:11Speaker 1: I'm trying to do you a favor. Then do it.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Get out of my office. But you need a pitcher
- 12:14Speaker 1: very badly. Why, I can win the pennant for you,
- 12:17Speaker 1: and that's no idle boast. It's a simple scientific fact.
- 12:20Speaker 1: I can win 30 games for you. Just 30 games?
- 12:24Speaker 1: Is that all? Well, no, no. 30 is just the minimum,
- 12:27Speaker 1: I suppose. Oh, no, no. You're not very screwy, are you?
- 12:31Speaker 5: Don't you know there ain't more than a dozen pitchers
- 12:32Speaker 5: ever won 30 games in a season?
- 12:33Speaker 1: Of course I do, and I can tell you their
- 12:35Speaker 1: names if you like. Never mind. Well, all I want
- 12:37Speaker 1: to do is show you what can you lose. My
- 12:39Speaker 1: breakfast is all.
- 12:41Speaker 6: Oh.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Hey, Mac, take this guy away. Yes, sir, Mr. Dolan.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Don't hurt his arm, though.
- 12:45Speaker 7: He thinks he's Walter Johnson.
- 12:46Speaker 1: You're being very stupid, Mr. Dolan. With a chance to
- 12:49Speaker 1: win the pennant right in your... Get him out of here!
- 12:51Speaker 1: Come on now, pal. Be a nice guy. You're annoying Mr. Dolan. Well,
- 12:54Speaker 1: if Mr. Dolan would do less shouting and more thinking,
- 12:56Speaker 1: he'd probably... Say, what's all the rumpus, Jimmy? Oh, I
- 12:58Speaker 1: got another crank in here. Thinks he's a pitcher. Thinks
- 13:00Speaker 1: he can win 30 games. You don't say. Where's he from?
- 13:03Speaker 1: He won't tell me! You, I take it, and Mr. Stone?
- 13:06Speaker 1: That's right. I appeal to your intelligence, Mr. Stone, as
- 13:08Speaker 1: the owner of a baseball club. Well? I'm perfectly rational
- 13:12Speaker 1: and willing to prove any claims I make. All I
- 13:14Speaker 1: want is a chance to demonstrate my pitching. How do
- 13:16Speaker 1: these characters get in here? I walked in, Mr. Stone,
- 13:19Speaker 1: and I'm about to walk out again. When I do,
- 13:22Speaker 1: the pennant walks right out the door with me. Come on,
- 13:25Speaker 1: Sonny Jim, take your pennant and trot along. Take a
- 13:27Speaker 1: good look at me, Mr. Stone. All the other owners
- 13:29Speaker 1: can't be pigheads. You'll see me later in the season.
- 13:32Speaker 5: Just a minute.
- 13:33Speaker 1: So I'm pig-headed, am I?
- 13:35Speaker 5: You walk in here off the street and think you
- 13:37Speaker 5: can win 30 games and just because I.
- 13:38Speaker 1: I don't think so, Mr. Stone. I know it. Know it?
- 13:42Speaker 1: I have never met such conceit in my life. I
- 13:45Speaker 1: told you he's a crackpot. You talk to him, boss.
- 13:47Speaker 1: I'm going out to batting practice.
- 13:48Speaker 5: Batting practice, huh? I think we ought to teach this
- 13:51Speaker 5: fellow a good lesson.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Teach him anything you like, but let me get out
- 13:54Speaker 1: of here. We're going with you, Jimmy.
- 13:56Speaker 5: Let him pitch to the boys.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Let him what?
- 13:59Speaker 5: Young man, you're going to have your wish. And you're
- 14:02Speaker 5: going to get the humiliation of your arrogant young life.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Oh, before we go, there's the questions of terms, of course. Terms? Yes, terms. Mister,
- 14:11Speaker 1: I got a handle to you. Thank you. Now, I
- 14:13Speaker 1: shall want $ 1, 000 for every game I win. Otherwise, not
- 14:16Speaker 1: a penny. And when I win a game, I am
- 14:18Speaker 1: to be paid promptly. I need the money. Now I've
- 14:20Speaker 1: heard everything. Take him out there, Jimmy. Put the top
- 14:23Speaker 1: of the batting order up. Oh, I'm really going to
- 14:26Speaker 1: enjoy this. Turns. Thousand dollars. Holy Moses. It ain't my idea, Monk.
- 14:39Speaker 1: It's his, Mr. Stone.
- 14:41Speaker 5: Give him a uniform, he said. That guy's a pitcher?
- 14:44Speaker 5: But he ain't got a prayer, Jimmy.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Look at him warming up. I'll get him over here.
- 14:47Speaker 5: Let him start pitching. And make sure he leaves that
- 14:49Speaker 5: uniform when I throw him out on his ear.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Okay, you. Dolan says you can start pitching now. Oh,
- 14:55Speaker 1: thank you. That's fine.
- 14:56Speaker 5: Look, let me tell you, kiddo, this baseball racket ain't
- 15:00Speaker 5: so hotsy like maybe you read about. It's got its
- 15:02Speaker 5: crummy side, too. Dirty trains all the time, cheap hotels, umpires.
- 15:07Speaker 1: It'll be a change, though. I'm rather looking forward to it. Well, don't.
- 15:11Speaker 1: You want to talk to him, Jimmy? No! I'll catch him, Jimmy.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Catch what? They're going to hit every pitch. All right,
- 15:17Speaker 1: you guys, come on. Time for the batting order. Come on, kid.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Let's show them what you got.
- 15:21Speaker 7: Knock it out of the park, Johnson.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Hey, what happened? Must have been an optical illusion. Let
- 15:28Speaker 1: me see you throw that one again. Hey, Monk, what's
- 15:31Speaker 1: this guy got anyway? I don't know. He didn't have
- 15:33Speaker 1: nothing when he was warming up. Now he's got to
- 15:35Speaker 1: hop like Barnum's flea. Hey, you, come on. Just throw
- 15:38Speaker 1: it and duck. Come on, throw something. This is getting monotonous.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Me and him is playing catch. Nice going, kid. Keep
- 15:48Speaker 1: it up.
- 15:53Speaker 5: Why, this is incredible, Jimmy. He's pitched to eight batters
- 15:56Speaker 5: and struck out six.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right, Mr. Stone. You sure taught him a lesson,
- 16:01Speaker 1: all right. But what's he got? I can't figure it out.
- 16:03Speaker 5: The ball rides up as big as a lemon pie.
- 16:06Speaker 5: And just when you get ready to murder it, it
- 16:07Speaker 5: jumps away. Hey, Monk, bring that guy over here. He
- 16:11Speaker 5: doesn't look like a pitcher. He doesn't even throw like
- 16:13Speaker 5: a pitcher. All he does is strike them out.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Hey, you, come here, come here. Say, what's your name, anyway? Oh. Oh,
- 16:20Speaker 1: I hadn't thought of it. Hadn't thought of your name? Well,
- 16:24Speaker 1: try hard, kid. Try hard. Well, it's, um, it's Kelly. Oh, Kelly, huh?
- 16:31Speaker 6: Hmm?
- 16:31Speaker 1: Well, that's the first encouraging thing you've said. Okay, hang around. Oh,
- 16:36Speaker 1: you mean we are ready to talk about the terms?
- 16:37Speaker 1: I ain't ready to talk at all, see? It depends
- 16:39Speaker 1: upon what happens this afternoon. What's this afternoon? Chicago, that's what.
- 16:43Speaker 1: We play Chicago this afternoon. Now, get him out of here.
- 16:51Speaker 1: And this morning, Mr. Dolan allowed me to participate in
- 16:54Speaker 1: the batting practice. I again concealed the little pad of
- 16:57Speaker 1: cotton inside my glove, saturated with the formula, and had
- 17:00Speaker 1: no difficulty in striking out most of the batters. I
- 17:03Speaker 1: find it a source of great amazement as I watch
- 17:05Speaker 1: the ball evade the bat. The players seem to have
- 17:07Speaker 1: a similar reaction. But my real test will come this afternoon,
- 17:11Speaker 1: if Mr. Dolan allows me to pitch against Chicago... No one,
- 17:14Speaker 1: of course, has the slightest suspicion that my skill as
- 17:16Speaker 1: a pitcher is due almost entirely to the chemical formula.
- 17:20Speaker 1: I must exercise every precaution... No! Just listen to that crowd,
- 17:30Speaker 1: ladies and gentlemen. After trailing St.
- 17:31Speaker 5: Louis 4-7, the Chicago team has staged a ninth inning
- 17:34Speaker 5: rally and tied up the ball game.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Manager Jimmy Dolan's going to put in a new pitcher.
- 17:38Speaker 1: I can't tell you who he is. His name isn't
- 17:40Speaker 1: even on the scorecard. But he better be good.
- 17:43Speaker 7: The bases are loaded and there's nobody else.
- 17:48Speaker 1: You heard me, Kelly. Get in there and pitch. Me? Yes, you.
- 17:52Speaker 5: Come on, kids, start steaming them in. I got a
- 17:54Speaker 5: feeling we ain't gonna have much time.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Oh, about my contract, Mr. Dolan. If I win this game,
- 17:57Speaker 1: it counts for me. I expect to get paid. I
- 17:59Speaker 1: don't pay you. Go talk to Stone.
- 18:01Speaker 8: Now?
- 18:01Speaker 1: No, no, there's a ball game going on.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Yes, sir. Thank you. Hey, you, umpire. Who's he putting in, Monk?
- 18:08Speaker 1: Who's a clown? We don't need no more clowns with
- 18:11Speaker 1: you around, sweetheart. Guy's name is Kelly. Attention, please. Kelly,
- 18:16Speaker 1: now pitching for St.
- 18:18Speaker 6: Louis.
- 18:18Speaker 5: And believe me, if there ever was a scared-looking rookie,
- 18:20Speaker 5: Kelly is it. I wonder what's in Dolan's mind, putting
- 18:23Speaker 5: Kelly in a spot like this. And if you want
- 18:25Speaker 5: to hear what the St. Louis fans think.
- 18:29Speaker 5: Well, Kelly's taking his warm-up pitches. And now Monk Lanigan,
- 18:32Speaker 5: the catcher, goes out to the mound to talk to him. Look, kid,
- 18:35Speaker 5: just take it easy. Just try and get that ball.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Over the plate, huh? It's my big opportunity. I've got
- 18:41Speaker 1: to get it over the plate.
- 18:42Speaker 5: Just remember, I'm all alone back there, and they don't
- 18:44Speaker 5: let me use no stepladder.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Baker, second base, now batting for Chicago.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Hey, Monk, where Dolan find that hooligan?
- 18:51Speaker 1: Joplin High School? Very skeddy head off him, Baker. They
- 18:54Speaker 1: make with the jokes. Okay, Kelly, let's go, kid.
- 18:57Speaker 6: Great!
- 18:59Speaker 1: Nice going, kid. He likes me, dude!
- 19:02Speaker 5: Howdy, baby, Kelly.
- 19:07Speaker 4: He likes me!
- 19:07Speaker 6: Ha-ha!
- 19:22Speaker 5: One of the most spectacular exhibitions of relief pitching we've
- 19:25Speaker 5: ever seen. With the bases loaded and nobody out, this
- 19:27Speaker 5: unknown rookie pitcher struck out the side, and St.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Louis went on to win the ball game 8-7.
- 19:32Speaker 6: For St.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Louis, 8-1... Mother!
- 19:38Speaker 4: Mother, where are you?
- 19:41Speaker 1: We're in here. What is it, Debbie?
- 19:43Speaker 4: I've heard from him, from Vernon. And look what he
- 19:45Speaker 4: sent me, an engagement ring.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Vernon? Something wrong somewhere. Why, a diamond like that must
- 19:51Speaker 1: have cost.
- 19:51Speaker 4: Now, Father, please.
- 19:53Speaker 5: When Vernon left here four days ago, I assumed he
- 19:55Speaker 5: was going to the Norworth Laboratories. And you know as
- 19:57Speaker 5: well as I do, he never got there.
- 19:58Speaker 8: That's why the police are searching for him, dear.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Well, well, what does he say in that letter?
- 20:02Speaker 4: He's so sweet. He's upset because he didn't get to
- 20:05Speaker 4: say goodbye to me.
- 20:06Speaker 1: But where is he?
- 20:07Speaker 4: Well, he says... I know you will have faith in
- 20:10Speaker 4: me and do what I ask without asking why I
- 20:13Speaker 4: ask it. Oh, that's Vernon, all right. He even writes
- 20:16Speaker 4: double talk. Oh, and then he says he hasn't disappeared
- 20:19Speaker 4: as the newspaper claims. Oh, but he has. Please call
- 20:22Speaker 4: the police and tell them to stop their search at once.
- 20:26Speaker 4: I cannot overemphasize the urgency of this.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Why, that in itself is suspicious. He's tangled himself up
- 20:31Speaker 1: in some.
- 20:31Speaker 4: Now, let me finish the letter, Father. My associates are
- 20:34Speaker 4: rather rough and ready.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Well, he practically admits it.
- 20:37Speaker 4: But their peculiar skill is a constant source of astonishment.
- 20:40Speaker 4: Skill at what, dear? I don't know. The work is
- 20:44Speaker 4: strenuous and exciting. But the financial rewards are quite fantastic.
- 20:48Speaker 8: Yes, they must be.
- 20:49Speaker 10: That ring.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Vernon's mixed up with some kind of a racket.
- 20:52Speaker 4: Oh, now, Father, don't jump at conclusions.
- 20:54Speaker 5: Well, he certainly got his leave of absence under false pretenses.
- 20:58Speaker 5: I can't forgive him for that.
- 20:59Speaker 8: Well, I'm sure we'll know all about it very soon.
- 21:01Speaker 4: No, no, I don't think so, Mother. He says I
- 21:04Speaker 4: won't hear from him again for months.
- 21:05Speaker 8: But why not?
- 21:07Speaker 4: Well, he says it would be too risky.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Risky?
- 21:10Speaker 8: Oh, dear, this is all very strange and frightening.
- 21:12Speaker 1: The box the ring came in. It's labeled Marx and Company.
- 21:16Speaker 4: Mm-hmm, in St. Louis.
- 21:17Speaker 8: Well, I'm going to St. Louis tomorrow. I'll take it
- 21:19Speaker 8: to the store and find out exactly what he.
- 21:21Speaker 4: No, no, Mother, you won't.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Why not?
- 21:23Speaker 4: Well, because I don't care if it's glass or not.
- 21:25Speaker 4: I'm going to wear Vernon's ring.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Not again, Kelly. Hello, Mr. Dolan.
- 21:36Speaker 5: What's the matter with you guys? Don't you know the
- 21:38Speaker 5: train leaves in five minutes? What do you want us
- 21:40Speaker 5: to do, Jimmy? Get everybody and polish the engine? Some
- 21:43Speaker 5: meat in the back again?
- 21:45Speaker 1: Uh, no, not now. Thank you.
- 21:47Speaker 5: Well, me and the boys were just talking about the
- 21:49Speaker 5: guy they're putting up against us in Chicago tomorrow.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Well, I'm scared. You ain't scared of him, are you? Well,
- 21:53Speaker 1: he's still got plenty of stuff. Last week, the bums
- 21:56Speaker 1: knocked him all over the lot. Just wait till tomorrow.
- 21:58Speaker 1: We'll kill him. I'd sure like to knock him off. Well,
- 22:01Speaker 1: come on, guys. Come on. Get on the train.
- 22:04Speaker 4: Now, just a minute, mother. Now, calm down. Now, where
- 22:08Speaker 4: did you say you're phoning from? Right here.
- 22:11Speaker 8: And I tell you, I saw Vernon not five minutes ago.
- 22:14Speaker 4: Well, what did he say?
- 22:15Speaker 8: Well, how could I talk to him? He was with
- 22:17Speaker 8: a lot of men. Oh, very tough-looking, dear.
- 22:19Speaker 1: All of them.
- 22:21Speaker 4: A lot of men?
- 22:22Speaker 8: Debbie, I'm afraid they're gangsters.
- 22:24Speaker 4: Oh, now, Mother.
- 22:25Speaker 8: Well, you should have heard what they said. They're going
- 22:27Speaker 8: to Chicago to knock a man off, and they're going
- 22:30Speaker 8: to kill him.
- 22:30Speaker 4: Oh, you must be wrong, Mother. Oh, it may have
- 22:34Speaker 4: looked like him, but I know it couldn't be Vernon.
- 22:37Speaker 8: Well, my train's leaving, dear. I'll see you at dinner.
- 22:39Speaker 4: Well, yes, Mother. Goodbye.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Oh, Vernon.
- 22:44Speaker 4: A gangster. Oh, it couldn't have been you, Vernon. It
- 22:49Speaker 4: just couldn't.
- 23:03Speaker 2: In a few moments, we'll bring you Act Two of
- 23:05Speaker 2: It Happens Every Spring. And now, here's Libby Collins, our
- 23:09Speaker 2: Hollywood reporter. What is it tonight, Libby?
- 23:12Speaker 1: Romance? Comedy? Both, Mr. Kennedy.
- 23:15Speaker 4: There's a new picture. 20th Century Fox's Everybody Does It.
- 23:18Speaker 4: A delightful comedy with a dash of romance. And if
- 23:22Speaker 4: it doesn't put everyone who sees it in a wonderful
- 23:24Speaker 4: frame of mind, I'll be surprised.
- 23:26Speaker 2: There's certainly a happy combination of talent in the picture.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Celeste Holm as a career-minded wife who wants to be
- 23:32Speaker 2: a concert singer.
- 23:33Speaker 4: And Paul Douglas as the husband who tries to discourage
- 23:35Speaker 4: her but doesn't know how.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Until Linda Darnell shows him. Linda plays an operatic siren
- 23:41Speaker 2: and does it in sparkling style.
- 23:43Speaker 4: You know, it seems to me in Everybody Does It
- 23:45Speaker 4: that Linda Darnell looks even more gorgeous than usual.
- 23:49Speaker 8: What really luscious beauty she has.
- 23:51Speaker 2: And one of her greatest charms, Libby, is that dazzling
- 23:54Speaker 2: luxe complexion.
- 23:56Speaker 4: Yes, John. Linda has one of the loveliest complexions in Hollywood. Naturally,
- 24:01Speaker 4: she gives her skin the best possible care. Like nine
- 24:04Speaker 4: out of ten other screen stars, she finds luxe soap
- 24:08Speaker 4: facials really work.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Tests by skin specialists proved. that daily luck soap care
- 24:14Speaker 2: does wonders for the skin. In three out of four cases,
- 24:18Speaker 2: complexions improve in a short time.
- 24:21Speaker 4: Luck soap facials are quick and easy, too. You just
- 24:24Speaker 4: smooth the creamy, fragrant lather well in, rinse, and pat
- 24:29Speaker 4: with a soft towel to dry.
- 24:30Speaker 1: That's all.
- 24:31Speaker 8: But see what fresh, new loveliness it gives the skin.
- 24:35Speaker 2: There's a beauty hint from Hollywood for women everywhere. be
- 24:39Speaker 2: sure to try this fine product of Lever Brothers Company
- 24:43Speaker 2: for your precious complexion. You'll be delighted with Lux Toilet

- 24:52Speaker 2: starring Ray Moland as Vernon Simpson and Colleen Townsend as Debbie.
- 24:58Speaker 7: ¶ ¶.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Thanks to his chemical formula, Professor Vernon Simpson has become
- 25:09Speaker 2: the ace pitcher of the St.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Louis baseball team.
- 25:12Speaker 2: In Pittsburgh, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, and Boston, under the name of Kelly,
- 25:16Speaker 2: Vernon has proved himself the strikeout king of the league. Now,
- 25:20Speaker 2: in New York, he finds that manager Jimmy Dolan has
- 25:23Speaker 2: assigned him a roommate, Monk Lanigan, the catcher.
- 25:27Speaker 5: So, that's how come I'm sharing the room with you, Kelly.
- 25:30Speaker 5: They kind of want me to keep an eye on you.
- 25:32Speaker 5: Dolan thinks you're somewhat of a screwball or something.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Are you, Kelly? Why, no, Monk, quite the opposite. Everything
- 25:39Speaker 1: I do is perfectly logical.
- 25:40Speaker 5: Hey, is that your girl's picture up there in the
- 25:42Speaker 5: dressing room?
- 25:43Speaker 1: Yes, yes, it is. Hot stuff. A sweet-looking kid, too.
- 25:48Speaker 1: What's her name, kid? Oh, you wouldn't know her. KG, huh?
- 25:51Speaker 8: Okay.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Hey, what's this stuff? This bottle? Oh, Monk, Monk, no, no.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Put that bottle down. Oh, what's eating you, Kelly? All
- 25:57Speaker 1: I did was... It's just hair tonic. Hair tonic? Yes,
- 26:00Speaker 1: a special prescription. It's very hard to get. The druggist
- 26:03Speaker 1: was a friend of mine. Hair tonic, huh? Yeah, seems
- 26:06Speaker 1: to have done you a lot of good.
- 26:08Speaker 6: Oh, yes.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Yes, it's done me a world of good. Where are
- 26:11Speaker 1: you really from, Kelly? Why all the mystery?
- 26:14Speaker 2: Well, it's my girl's father, Monk. If he ever finds out,
- 26:18Speaker 2: I'll lose my girl and my job and everything.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Finds out what? What I'm doing. I didn't even think
- 26:23Speaker 1: I could do it, but I am. And what I'm
- 26:24Speaker 1: doing isn't one of the things I'm doing at all.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Come again? Well, you see, I'm getting the one thing
- 26:30Speaker 1: he wants me to have that I haven't got, money,
- 26:32Speaker 1: by doing the one thing he's most against. You see?
- 26:36Speaker 1: Leave it go, kid. Quit trying.
- 26:39Speaker 5: Well, you better get some sleep. You're pitching tomorrow, you know. No,
- 26:42Speaker 5: I'm confident I'll win, Monk. Don't be too sure. I'll
- 26:45Speaker 5: try to figure out what you should feed those New Yorks.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Oh, but you know I've only got one real pitch,
- 26:49Speaker 1: the one with the hop. Yeah, I keep forgetting. Go
- 26:53Speaker 1: on to sleep. Rookie pitches no hit, no run game.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Kelly hits Hall of Fame for St. Louis. New York
- 27:02Speaker 1: floored by pitch that hopped. Well, kid, I was just
- 27:13Speaker 1: talking to Dolan. He still thinks you're nuts. Well, I
- 27:16Speaker 1: suppose my conduct does seem strange at times.
- 27:18Speaker 5: You're pitching no-hit game this afternoon, and when them reporters
- 27:21Speaker 5: and photographers come, you run away and hide.
- 27:23Speaker 1: That ain't normal, Kelly. But I told you, Monk, I
- 27:25Speaker 1: don't want any publicity.
- 27:27Speaker 5: But you gotta talk to those guys. Them newspaper fellas
- 27:30Speaker 5: can ruin you.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Exactly. One recognizable picture of me in the newspapers, and
- 27:34Speaker 1: I am ruined. Well, I'll just see to it that
- 27:36Speaker 1: I don't pitch any more no-hit games at all. You'll
- 27:39Speaker 1: just see to it... Kelly, you mustn't talk like that.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Then forget about the reporters. Well, cheer up, kid. This
- 27:46Speaker 1: time tomorrow, we'll be back in St. Louis. Well, that's
- 27:49Speaker 1: your home, ain't it? It's too close to home. Excuse me, Monk.
- 27:53Speaker 1: I think I'll turn in.
- 28:01Speaker 7: Hey, Kelly, come on, come on, open up.
- 28:04Speaker 1: And good morning to you, Mr. Dolan. Where's Kelly? Uh,
- 28:07Speaker 1: he went downtown. But don't worry.
- 28:09Speaker 5: He just said he had something very personal to do downtown. Well,
- 28:12Speaker 5: don't let him forget he's pitching this afternoon. Three days
- 28:15Speaker 5: in our home park and we haven't won a game.
- 28:17Speaker 1: We will today. Hey, what do you think you're doing?
- 28:20Speaker 1: I'm getting dressed. I'm brushing me hair. Since when do
- 28:23Speaker 1: you use hair tonic? This morning. This bottle? This ain't mine.
- 28:28Speaker 1: It's Kelly's. Just thought I'd bother you a little. Holy Moses!
- 28:31Speaker 1: Take it easy. Kelly won't care. Look at your hair there.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Look in the mirror.
- 28:36Speaker 5: My hair.
- 28:37Speaker 1: It's standing straight up. It's vibrating.
- 28:42Speaker 5: But he uses it, Kelly. Says he uses it all
- 28:44Speaker 5: the time. Let me smell that bottle. Well, it ain't booze.
- 28:50Speaker 5: That's all I was worried about.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Me hair. It's still standing up, just sort of waving.
- 28:56Speaker 5: Well, see that Kelly's in shape to pitch. Give his
- 28:59Speaker 5: arm a good massage and make sure he takes a nap.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Oh, it's you, Mr. Kelly. I didn't recognize you, sir.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Dark glasses and all. Well, I came in to pay
- 29:08Speaker 1: the balance on that diamond ring I bought. Here you are.
- 29:10Speaker 1: Thank you, sir. Did the lady like the ring? I
- 29:14Speaker 1: don't know. I hope so.
- 29:15Speaker 4: Oh.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Well, would you care to look at some wedding rings? No,
- 29:18Speaker 1: thank you. Not until the end of the season. I mean,
- 29:20Speaker 1: not until October. I hope you won't forget us, Mr. Kelly.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Good day, sir.
- 29:28Speaker 4: Vernon. Oh, Vernon, it's you.
- 29:30Speaker 7: Debbie.
- 29:31Speaker 4: Meeting you on the street after all these weeks. And
- 29:35Speaker 4: what were you doing in there, in that jewelry store?
- 29:37Speaker 1: Well, if you must know, I.
- 29:38Speaker 4: No, no, don't tell me. I know already, Vernon. Oh,
- 29:42Speaker 4: I read about what happened in Chicago.
- 29:44Speaker 1: You did?
- 29:44Speaker 4: But you're not going to try the same thing here.
- 29:47Speaker 4: They've got guards and policemen.
- 29:48Speaker 1: Debbie!
- 29:49Speaker 4: And don't pretend you're so innocent. Besides, Mother heard you
- 29:53Speaker 4: planned the whole thing in the station. You and your
- 29:55Speaker 4: confederates held up that jewelry store in Chicago, and now
- 29:58Speaker 4: you're here looking this one over.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Debbie, but that's absurd.
- 30:01Speaker 4: Did you or did you not go to Chicago?
- 30:04Speaker 1: Yes, yes, I.
- 30:05Speaker 4: Now, you ask me to trust you, to believe in you.
- 30:08Speaker 1: And you do. You're wearing the ring, oh, Debbie.
- 30:11Speaker 4: Well, now, trust works both ways. If you won't trust
- 30:14Speaker 4: me enough to tell me what this is all about, well,
- 30:17Speaker 4: perhaps you'd better take the ring back right now.
- 30:19Speaker 1: All right. All right, Debbie, I'll tell you. If you
- 30:22Speaker 1: must know what I've been doing, well, I'm a baseball player.
- 30:26Speaker 4: That's not very funny, Vernon. If you don't want to
- 30:29Speaker 4: tell me the truth, just say so.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Look... Buy a morning newspaper, look at the sports page.
- 30:33Speaker 1: Big headline, Kelly to pitch against Boston. Well, I'm Kelly.
- 30:38Speaker 4: Oh, you are. And I'm Mata Hari. When you're ready
- 30:41Speaker 4: to tell me the truth, Vernon, you know just where
- 30:43Speaker 4: to find me.
- 30:43Speaker 7: Debbie, Debbie, wait, please.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Well, I hope you like the seats, Dr. Greenlee. Best
- 30:55Speaker 1: in the ballpark, you know.
- 30:56Speaker 5: That's what happens when you're with a man who owns
- 30:58Speaker 5: the ball club.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Well, this is fine, Mr. Stone, just fine. Do you
- 31:03Speaker 1: know this is the first baseball game I've seen in years?
- 31:06Speaker 1: Sit back and relax, Doctor. Enjoy yourself.
- 31:09Speaker 5: I'll relax after you've agreed to give that donation to
- 31:11Speaker 5: the College Research Fund. I'm afraid this is going to
- 31:14Speaker 5: be an expensive afternoon for me. I certainly hope so, Mr. Stone.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Who's pitching today?
- 31:21Speaker 5: Why, the best pitcher we have, Kelly. That's Kelly warming
- 31:24Speaker 5: up over there.
- 31:25Speaker 10: Oh?
- 31:26Speaker 1: He's, uh, he's good, is he? Good? He's incredible. A
- 31:31Speaker 1: strange thing, Dr. Greenlee.
- 31:33Speaker 5: He doesn't act like a ball player at all.
- 31:35Speaker 1: I'd like to have you meet him. Oh, uh, Lanigan. Yeah, Mr. Stump?
- 31:38Speaker 1: Tell Kelly to stop by, will you? There's someone here
- 31:40Speaker 1: I'd like him to meet. Say that again, will you, Kelly?
- 31:44Speaker 1: I don't think I heard you right. I said that
- 31:46Speaker 1: I can't pitch today, Mr. Dolan. Why, you prima donna,
- 31:49Speaker 1: that's mutiny! I'll slap the biggest, fattest fine on you
- 31:52Speaker 1: in history! Well, I'd rather you wouldn't, but it won't
- 31:54Speaker 1: make any difference if you do.
- 31:55Speaker 4: Brooker!
- 31:56Speaker 5: Brooker, get out there and warm up! He won't get
- 31:57Speaker 5: away with this. I'll find him, I'll suspend him, I'll...
- 31:59Speaker 5: You got him wrong, Jimmy. Oh, Kelly's kind of wacky,
- 32:03Speaker 5: all right, but he ain't no prima donna. Then what's
- 32:05Speaker 5: he walking out of the game for?
- 32:06Speaker 1: I don't know. Mr. Stone tells me some guy wants
- 32:09Speaker 1: to meet him.
- 32:09Speaker 5: Kelly starts walking toward the grandstand, and all of a sudden,
- 32:12Speaker 5: he ducks like he'd seen a ghost. Just wait till
- 32:13Speaker 5: this game's over. Just wait till I get back. Now, look,
- 32:15Speaker 5: if you get tough with him, there's no telling what
- 32:17Speaker 5: he'll do. We got along without him before, didn't we?
- 32:19Speaker 1: Look, let me talk to him. Let me see what
- 32:21Speaker 1: it's all about. It wasn't just a whim, Monk. I
- 32:25Speaker 1: had to get off the field. I saw someone in
- 32:27Speaker 1: the stands. You mean a copper or something? No, no,
- 32:30Speaker 1: just someone who knew me before I joined the ball club.
- 32:33Speaker 1: But you've got to take that chance, kid. It's liable
- 32:35Speaker 1: to happen any time. I know, and when it does,
- 32:37Speaker 1: I'll have to do exactly what I'm doing now. I'll
- 32:39Speaker 1: see you at the hotel. Monk, come in. You can
- 32:50Speaker 1: turn on the lights. Why aren't you asleep getting your rest?
- 32:53Speaker 1: I can't sleep.
- 32:54Speaker 5: Well, I just come from Stone and Dolan. They had
- 32:58Speaker 5: me on a carpet so long I got fallen arches.
- 33:00Speaker 5: You take a walk and I get blown out.
- 33:03Speaker 1: I guess I'm fired, huh? No, they're letting you off.
- 33:06Speaker 1: You can thank your old Uncle Monk. Well, then what happened, Kelly?
- 33:09Speaker 1: Where's the thing Diana stands? Oh, it doesn't matter. It's
- 33:12Speaker 1: my girl I'm worried about. She's going to find out
- 33:15Speaker 1: about me. Why? How come? Because I told her. Only
- 33:18Speaker 1: she didn't believe me. But she's bound to know, and
- 33:20Speaker 1: so is her father. Her father? If he ever learns
- 33:23Speaker 1: the truth, I'm really finished. He'll never take me back,
- 33:26Speaker 1: and I can't say I blame him after what I said.
- 33:28Speaker 1: What did you say? Oh, I was desperate. I certainly
- 33:31Speaker 1: gave him a false impression. He thought I was doing
- 33:34Speaker 1: something entirely different. That's the only reason he gave me
- 33:36Speaker 1: my leave of absence. Leave of absence? Where'd they have you,
- 33:39Speaker 1: in a pen or something? Doesn't matter. You're going to
- 33:42Speaker 1: find out, so there's no point in going on.
- 33:44Speaker 5: Look, I'm not sure, girl. Maybe she won't find out.
- 33:47Speaker 5: You've got to wait and see. Wait and see what?
- 33:49Speaker 1: Well, if she gets the idea, you ain't rubbing her.
- 33:52Speaker 1: What'll she do? She'll come out to your next game
- 33:54Speaker 1: and see for herself. Well... It adds up, don't it?
- 33:58Speaker 1: Of course it does. And that's just why I'm not
- 34:00Speaker 1: going to pitch anymore. Oh, why didn't I say that?
- 34:02Speaker 1: I'm making a wish and wish. Now, look, Kelly.
- 34:04Speaker 5: You've got to think of us, too. The rest of
- 34:06Speaker 5: the team. We've got a chance to win the pennant.
- 34:08Speaker 5: Maybe even a World Series. That means something.
- 34:11Speaker 1: To a lot of guys. Yes. Yes, I suppose it does. Well?
- 34:17Speaker 1: Give me a little time, Monk. I'm too upset even
- 34:20Speaker 1: to think. I'll try to do whatever's right. Forgive me
- 34:33Speaker 1: for being nosy, Debbie, but would you mind telling me
- 34:36Speaker 1: what you're doing?
- 34:38Speaker 4: Oh, just reading the newspaper, Father.
- 34:40Speaker 1: The sports page, you?
- 34:42Speaker 4: Well, I was interested in a wild statement someone made. Father,
- 34:47Speaker 4: do you need the car today? I think I'll drive
- 34:49Speaker 4: into St.
- 34:50Speaker 8: Louis.
- 34:51Speaker 1: Another shopping spree?
- 34:52Speaker 6: No.
- 34:53Speaker 4: No, all I want to do is some looking around.
- 35:03Speaker 5: Well, Jimmy, whatever happened to Kelly the other day, he's
- 35:05Speaker 5: certainly over it now. That's the tenth man he struck out. Yeah,
- 35:09Speaker 5: he's doing okay, Mr.
- 35:09Speaker 1: Stone.
- 35:10Speaker 5: Come on, Kelly.
- 35:11Speaker 1: Come on.
- 35:11Speaker 3: Get this guy.
- 35:12Speaker 1: What I told you is pitching, lady.
- 35:17Speaker 4: His name's Kelly. Oh, but isn't that brilliant?
- 35:19Speaker 10: It is.
- 35:20Speaker 4: I see him.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Come on, Vernon.
- 35:21Speaker 4: Strike him out. No, lady. Kelly.
- 35:24Speaker 1: I told you his name's Kelly.
- 35:25Speaker 4: So did he, but I didn't believe him.
- 35:28Speaker 1: Oh, Vernon.
- 35:28Speaker 6: Vernon, that's wonderful.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Just a second, miss. Where do you think you're going?
- 35:38Speaker 4: I want to see Mr. Kelly. I'm a friend of his.
- 35:40Speaker 1: That's the dressing room. You better wait for him here.
- 35:43Speaker 4: Oh, yes, of course.
- 35:44Speaker 1: Hey, it's you. You're Kelly's girl. Well, ain't you?
- 35:49Speaker 4: Well, who are you?
- 35:49Speaker 5: Jumping Jupiter, some luck I seen you first. Come on, sister,
- 35:53Speaker 5: we're grabbing a cab.
- 35:54Speaker 4: Hey, wait a minute. I want to see him.
- 35:56Speaker 5: I'll tell you all about it in a cab, lady.
- 35:58Speaker 5: Just get out of here.
- 36:03Speaker 4: So you're Mr.
- 36:03Speaker 1: Lanigan.
- 36:04Speaker 4: Well, I'm glad to know you.
- 36:05Speaker 1: You know, honey, I see you the first thing every
- 36:08Speaker 1: morning and the last thing every night.
- 36:09Speaker 4: You do?
- 36:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:11Speaker 5: Kelly's got your picture right on top of the dresser.
- 36:13Speaker 5: You and his bottle of hair tonic.
- 36:15Speaker 4: Hair tonic?
- 36:16Speaker 5: Anyway, if Kelly knew you or anybody else was watching him,
- 36:18Speaker 5: he'd walk right out of the ballpark.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Why, he done it just the other day.
- 36:22Speaker 4: Oh, that must have been the day my father was there.
- 36:24Speaker 5: And if he blows, well, the team's dead and so
- 36:27Speaker 5: is he.
- 36:28Speaker 1: You don't want to hate a guy just when he's
- 36:30Speaker 1: right on top. Or do you?
- 36:32Speaker 4: Oh, no, of course not.
- 36:34Speaker 5: Look, you want to come to the games, okay. I'll
- 36:36Speaker 5: send you passes. Only don't let Kelly see.
- 36:39Speaker 4: I'll sit way up in the farthest corner, Mr.
- 36:41Speaker 5: Lanigan.
- 36:42Speaker 1: And you're not sore at the game?
- 36:43Speaker 4: No, I'm not sore. But it is quite a shock
- 36:46Speaker 4: to fall in love with a college professor and then
- 36:48Speaker 4: have him turn out to be a big league pitcher.
- 36:49Speaker 6: Ah!
- 36:51Speaker 1: So that's what he is. A professor.
- 36:53Speaker 4: Well, now, is that so surprising?
- 36:55Speaker 1: Certainly. On account of that's exactly what I thought he was.
- 36:59Speaker 1: But Vernon.
- 37:00Speaker 4: Maybe I shouldn't have told you that.
- 37:02Speaker 1: You know something?
- 37:04Speaker 5: This Kelly of Vernon is quite a character.
- 37:07Speaker 1: But he sure can pick things. St. Louis takes pennants.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Kelly wins 38th game of the season. St. Louis to
- 37:17Speaker 1: face New York in World Series. Some World Series.
- 37:25Speaker 5: You ever see anybody as lucky as them New Yorks?
- 37:28Speaker 5: It should have been all over with yesterday. Instead, they
- 37:30Speaker 5: tied up three games each.
- 37:32Speaker 1: Why, right now, Whitney.
- 37:34Speaker 1: Hey, Kelly, ain't you listening? This bottle, Monk, it's empty.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Have you been using my hair tonic? Hair tonic? Oh, yeah,
- 37:42Speaker 1: I'm growing a whole new crap. Ain't you even noticed
- 37:44Speaker 1: the difference? I had another bottle, but that's gone, too. Monk,
- 37:48Speaker 1: this is serious. Without that bottle, I'm sunk. It's just
- 37:51Speaker 1: hair tonic, ain't it? Never mind.
- 37:53Speaker 5: What did you do with it? Well, I give it
- 37:55Speaker 5: to Jimmy Dolan. He's getting a little thin on top.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Jimmy, I've got to get it. Now, right away. Well,
- 38:04Speaker 1: come in, come in. What's the idea of a noise?
- 38:07Speaker 1: I'm sorry to bother you, Mr. Dolan, but I... Oh,
- 38:08Speaker 1: it's you, Kelly.
- 38:09Speaker 5: In here, in here.
- 38:10Speaker 1: I'm just washing up. Well, kid, how do you feel?
- 38:14Speaker 1: I hope you ain't nervous like I am. I'm counting
- 38:16Speaker 1: on you. Well, at the moment, I am rather nervous.
- 38:18Speaker 1: You see, my life... A few hours from now, we'll
- 38:20Speaker 1: be world champs. Or New York will. Yes, that's right, Mr. Dolan.
- 38:24Speaker 6: Mr.
- 38:24Speaker 1: Dolan, I know this is going to sound a little...
- 38:26Speaker 1: Look at my hair, will you?
- 38:27Speaker 5: Even my hair's nervous. Keeps jumping up. Must be a
- 38:32Speaker 5: lot of electricity.
- 38:33Speaker 1: In the air. Well, what's on your mind, Kelly? Well,
- 38:36Speaker 1: it's my hair tonic.
- 38:38Speaker 6: Huh?
- 38:38Speaker 1: Did Monk give you a bottle of my hair tonic? Yeah, yeah,
- 38:41Speaker 1: that's right. I just now tried a little. I was
- 38:43Speaker 1: losing a few. Mike said it'd grow hair on a
- 38:46Speaker 1: billiard ball. Kind of an insult. Well, you see, it's
- 38:50Speaker 1: a very rare solution, Mr. Dolan, and I cannot duplicate it. Well, okay, okay,
- 38:54Speaker 1: I'll pay you for it. Oh, no, no, it isn't that.
- 38:56Speaker 1: It's my last bottle, and I... I need it. You
- 38:59Speaker 1: need it? With that mop? Who do you think you're
- 39:01Speaker 1: playing for, the House of David? Well, it's just a
- 39:03Speaker 1: little idiosyncrasy of mine, and sort of a superstition, and
- 39:06Speaker 1: especially today.
- 39:07Speaker 5: Well, I've heard of everything from a rabbit's foot to
- 39:10Speaker 5: an elk's tooth. But here, Tonic, that's a new one.
- 39:14Speaker 6: Please, Mr.
- 39:14Speaker 1: Dolan, have you got it? Sure I got it. Right
- 39:17Speaker 1: here in the medicine ca... Oh!
- 39:19Speaker 2: Oh, no!
- 39:20Speaker 1: No!
- 39:20Speaker 6: No!
- 39:32Speaker 2: We pause now for station identification. This is CBS, the
- 39:36Speaker 2: Columbia Broadcasting System. In a moment, we'll bring you Act
- 39:59Speaker 2: Three of It Happens Every Spring. Our guest tonight is blonde, blue-eyed,
- 40:05Speaker 2: and 22. At that tender age, Miss Jean Ruth is
- 40:08Speaker 2: a veteran of more than one stage hit and has
- 40:11Speaker 2: appeared in several pictures.
- 40:13Speaker 1: I take it you like Hollywood, Jean.
- 40:15Speaker 4: Very much, Mr.
- 40:16Speaker 5: Kennedy.
- 40:17Speaker 4: And it was such fun to be on the Paramount
- 40:19Speaker 4: lot when they were shooting the Hal Wallace production of
- 40:21Speaker 4: My Friend Irma. All of us were weak from laughing
- 40:25Speaker 4: when they'd finished.
- 40:26Speaker 2: I can understand why. Our neighbor on the radio is
- 40:29Speaker 2: equally entertaining on the screen. The picture My Friend Irma
- 40:33Speaker 2: is based on that popular Lever Brothers Company radio program,
- 40:36Speaker 2: which follows immediately after the Lux Radio Theater.
- 40:39Speaker 1: Marie Wilson, of course, plays Irma.
- 40:41Speaker 4: Well, who else? Having created her on the air, Marie
- 40:44Speaker 4: just had to do the movie. And John Lund, with
- 40:46Speaker 4: his flair for comedy, is perfect as Al. And fans
- 40:50Speaker 4: will love that brand-new laugh team, Martin and Lewis.
- 40:53Speaker 2: And Diana Lynn is Jane, Irma's long-suffering girlfriend.
- 40:57Speaker 4: She's Jane to a T, Mr.
- 40:58Speaker 1: Kennedy.
- 40:59Speaker 4: I used to love to visit Diana on the set,
- 41:01Speaker 4: and she's a darling. We talked about everything under the sun,
- 41:05Speaker 4: including the best way to keep your skin nice for
- 41:07Speaker 4: camera close-ups. Oh, of course you know Diana's a luxe girl, Mr.
- 41:11Speaker 1: Kennedy. One of the loveliest. The real American beauty type.
- 41:14Speaker 1: So fresh and natural-looking.
- 41:16Speaker 4: Yes, and her complexion is really beautiful. Diana told me
- 41:20Speaker 4: she wouldn't dream of neglecting her luxe soap facials. She
- 41:23Speaker 4: says that creamy lather gives her skin just the care
- 41:26Speaker 4: it needs.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Yes, luxe soap care is so gentle. No wonder screen
- 41:30Speaker 2: stars depend on it for million-dollar complexions.
- 41:33Speaker 4: It's wonderful, the softest, smoother look it gives your skin. Oh,
- 41:37Speaker 4: I know, because... I use Luxe toilet soap every day.
- 41:41Speaker 2: Thank you, Miss Jean Ruth, for reminding us that this
- 41:44Speaker 2: beauty soap with the delicate perfume is the choice of
- 41:48Speaker 2: lovely women everywhere. So, if you haven't tried it, get
- 41:52Speaker 2: a supply of fragrant white Luxe toilet soap tomorrow. The
- 41:57Speaker 2: curtain rises on the third act of It Happens Every Spring,
- 42:01Speaker 2: starring Ray Moland as Vernon Simpson and Colleen Townsend as Debbie.
- 42:13Speaker 1: Well, the World Series is tied.
- 42:15Speaker 2: Three games to three, and the issue will be decided
- 42:18Speaker 2: this afternoon when Vernon Simpson, the year's most sensational pitcher,
- 42:22Speaker 2: faces New York. Unfortunately, all Vernon's skill was contained in
- 42:27Speaker 2: a little bottle marked hair tonic. But the bottle just
- 42:30Speaker 2: smashed in Jimmy Dolan's wash basin, and Vernon's career as
- 42:33Speaker 2: a pitcher has gurgled down the drains. Miles away from St. Louis,
- 42:38Speaker 2: in the Greenleaf home, Debbie's in something.
- 42:41Speaker 1: Of a spot.
- 42:41Speaker 5: You've been going around here like the cat who just
- 42:44Speaker 5: swallowed the canary.
- 42:45Speaker 10: You're a grown girl, Debbie, and you're quite entitled to
- 42:48Speaker 10: live your own life. It's just that Father and I were...
- 42:51Speaker 10: These trips you've been making. Well, Debbie, where have you
- 42:54Speaker 10: been going?
- 42:55Speaker 4: To St.
- 42:56Speaker 8: Louis.
- 42:57Speaker 7: Why?
- 42:58Speaker 4: To see Vernon, Father.
- 43:00Speaker 1: Vernon? Well... What has he got to say for himself?
- 43:04Speaker 4: Well, I don't know. I haven't talked to him. That
- 43:07Speaker 4: is not for some time.
- 43:09Speaker 8: Oh, Debbie, you're being very difficult.
- 43:11Speaker 4: Well, all right, I'll tell you. Now, Father, you're going
- 43:14Speaker 4: to get terribly angry, but, well, I guess you'll both
- 43:17Speaker 4: have to find out sooner or later. Here, look at this.
- 43:22Speaker 1: Well?
- 43:23Speaker 4: Read it, Mother, the headline.
- 43:24Speaker 10: Dolan gambles on Kelly to cop World Series.
- 43:29Speaker 1: Mixed up in gambling, huh? Who's Dolan? Who's Kelly?
- 43:34Speaker 4: Well, you should know who Kelly is, Father.
- 43:36Speaker 1: Oh, yes, yes. The pitcher Mr. Stone wanted me to
- 43:38Speaker 1: meet that time.
- 43:40Speaker 4: Well, Kelly's more than a pitcher, Father. He's Vernon.
- 43:44Speaker 1: What? Vernon? Vernon Simpson?
- 43:47Speaker 4: Now, don't get excited, Father. Oh, no, it's impossible.
- 43:50Speaker 8: Well, Alfred, don't you have anything to say?
- 43:53Speaker 5: I think it's outrageous that he never pitched here for
- 43:56Speaker 5: the varsity.
- 43:57Speaker 4: Oh, Father. Father, then you don't mind.
- 43:59Speaker 5: Well, of course I mind. He lied to me, didn't he?
- 44:01Speaker 5: Left his classes here, left his laboratory to play baseball.
- 44:05Speaker 8: What are you going to do, Alfred?
- 44:06Speaker 1: Do? I'm going into St. Louis and see that ball game.
- 44:09Speaker 4: Oh, they're all sold out, dear. But it just happens
- 44:12Speaker 4: that a friend of mine, a Mr. Monk Lanigan, has
- 44:14Speaker 4: given me some tickets.
- 44:17Speaker 5: So here we are, ladies and gentlemen, top of the
- 44:19Speaker 5: eighth inning in this deciding game of a neck-and-neck World Series.
- 44:22Speaker 5: The score remains 6-6, but something has happened to Kelly.
- 44:25Speaker 5: He's definitely not himself today. He's been in trouble constantly,
- 44:28Speaker 5: but those St. Louis hitters have come back strong to
- 44:30Speaker 5: save him. Well, he's towing the rubber now. Hopkins at
- 44:34Speaker 5: the plate, Marconi on second.
- 44:35Speaker 1: Here comes the pitch.
- 44:37Speaker 5: It's a hit. It's a clean single right through shortstop.
- 44:39Speaker 5: Marconi scores, and Hopkins is safe on first. And listen
- 44:42Speaker 5: to that crowd.
- 44:47Speaker 1: Hey!
- 44:47Speaker 10: Vernon's doing fine, isn't he, dear?
- 44:49Speaker 4: Why, he threw the ball and made it hit the bat. Oh, no, Mother, no. No,
- 44:53Speaker 4: he's not doing fine at all.
- 44:55Speaker 8: Oh, I can't understand it.
- 44:56Speaker 4: What's happening?
- 44:57Speaker 7: New York leads now 7-6.
- 44:58Speaker 1: There are two outs, but Kelly's in real trouble again.
- 45:01Speaker 1: And there goes Monk Lannigan out of the mound. A
- 45:03Speaker 1: big score.
- 45:04Speaker 4: High on it.
- 45:06Speaker 1: How about it, kid? Where's your heart? I haven't got
- 45:08Speaker 1: it anymore, Monk. It's gone. You see this little pad
- 45:11Speaker 1: in my glove? Huh? What about the little pad? Dry
- 45:14Speaker 1: as a bone, not a drop left. I'm just a
- 45:16Speaker 1: sandlot pitcher again. What are you talking about? Are you
- 45:19Speaker 1: feeling all right? I feel awful.
- 45:21Speaker 5: Look, steady down, kid. So they hit a few. There's
- 45:25Speaker 5: seven men behind you. They can handle it. They're a
- 45:27Speaker 5: great ball club.
- 45:27Speaker 1: They better be. Come on, come on, play ball. Come on.
- 45:33Speaker 5: And the strike as Wilson lets a fastball get by him.
- 45:35Speaker 5: I don't know what Monk Lanigan told Kelly, but Kelly's
- 45:37Speaker 5: pitched two successive strikes now.
- 45:39Speaker 1: And here comes the next one.
- 45:41Speaker 4: And he struck him out.
- 45:42Speaker 5: Wilson goes down swinging and the side's retired. But it's
- 45:45Speaker 5: another run for New York and they're out in front 7-6.
- 45:47Speaker 1: Here you are, Kelly. Here's your jacket. Now sit down
- 45:56Speaker 1: and quit worrying. Why don't you just get some hits?
- 45:59Speaker 1: This ball game ain't over yet. I wish it were.
- 46:02Speaker 1: So you hop in, Lincoln. You and I know it,
- 46:04Speaker 1: but them New York batters don't.
- 46:06Speaker 5: They go up there thinking they're going to strike out
- 46:08Speaker 5: like they've been doing all season.
- 46:09Speaker 1: You got to use psychology. It's going to take more
- 46:11Speaker 1: than psychology, Monk. Keep bluffing them, see? Just give them
- 46:15Speaker 1: the ball. Attaboy, Lincoln! It's a hit, a hit! If
- 46:18Speaker 1: I were intelligent, I'd ask Jimmy Dolan to take me out.
- 46:21Speaker 1: But I'm not going to do it. I hope he
- 46:22Speaker 1: lets me stay. Now you don't. What happened out there?
- 46:27Speaker 1: What happened? Tony just knocked a double. Richard's on third.
- 46:30Speaker 1: If Tony gets home, we got that game in the bag.
- 46:32Speaker 1: Come on, baby! Monka, I may not win. Don't be
- 46:35Speaker 1: too sure. But I'll go down trying, even if we
- 46:38Speaker 1: do lose. Will you quit talking about losing? We got
- 46:40Speaker 1: two men on. Hit it, Titus! Knock it out of
- 46:43Speaker 1: the park! You can do it, kid! Hit it!
- 46:46Speaker 5: Hit it!
- 46:49Speaker 1: And there it goes. It's up against the fence. Richard scores,
- 46:51Speaker 1: and Bevan is coming in, too.
- 46:52Speaker 10: St.
- 46:53Speaker 11: Louis is ahead again, 8-7. with a long fly to
- 47:01Speaker 11: center field that retires aside.
- 47:03Speaker 1: But St.
- 47:04Speaker 5: Louis had a big inning. Those two runs can settle
- 47:06Speaker 5: this World Series. Jimmy Dolan's boys have just three more
- 47:08Speaker 5: men to retire, and they've won themselves the highest honors
- 47:11Speaker 5: in baseball.
- 47:12Speaker 1: And looking down to the St.
- 47:13Speaker 5: Louis dugout, it appears that manager Dolan is going to
- 47:15Speaker 5: let Kelly stay in the game.
- 47:19Speaker 1: Come on, come on, come on. Let's get out there.
- 47:21Speaker 1: It's your game, Kelly. Win or lose. Thanks, Mr. Dolan.
- 47:25Speaker 1: All you gotta do is hold them, kid. Good luck. Monk. Monk,
- 47:28Speaker 1: wait a minute. Take off your cap. What's eating you, kid?
- 47:32Speaker 1: Your head. I just want to rub it. You want
- 47:36Speaker 1: to rub my head? Well, maybe there's still a little
- 47:39Speaker 1: left on it. Oh, Kelly, don't go whacking now. Not now, please.
- 47:44Speaker 1: It's all right, Monk. It's just for luck. You mean
- 47:46Speaker 1: to say Louis is ahead again? Yes, mother, yes. Eight
- 47:51Speaker 1: to seven.
- 47:51Speaker 10: Oh!
- 47:54Speaker 1: Now if Vernon can only contain them.
- 47:57Speaker 7: Retire the side, Vernon.
- 47:58Speaker 5: Retire the side.
- 48:02Speaker 7: Small roller down the shortstop.
- 48:04Speaker 1: If Hobson's got it and he whips the.
- 48:05Speaker 4: First, he's out.
- 48:06Speaker 8: Davis is out.
- 48:07Speaker 1: Kelly's missed the small man. The ball game is over.
- 48:10Speaker 1: But that's an awful big if right now as Aaron.
- 48:12Speaker 5: Walks up to the plate. He's had two hits already.
- 48:15Speaker 5: Kelly's rubbing up the ball now. Kneading into his glove
- 48:17Speaker 5: as he usually does. Gets his signal from Lannigan. Goes
- 48:20Speaker 5: into the stretch.
- 48:20Speaker 1: And here it comes.
- 48:22Speaker 7: And there it goes.
- 48:23Speaker 1: It's a hit. A line drive right down the foul
- 48:25Speaker 1: line that Richards leaped for but couldn't get. Aaron's not
- 48:27Speaker 1: stopping at first. He's trying for two. There's a drive.
- 48:30Speaker 1: And he's safe.
- 48:30Speaker 7: He's in there with a double.
- 48:33Speaker 5: Fred Duffy's at bat now with Aaron on second.
- 48:37Speaker 1: Aaron's a potential dying run.
- 48:39Speaker 5: Out of the mound, Kelly's writing him for it. The
- 48:42Speaker 5: toes are up now. Looks at the runner on second.
- 48:44Speaker 1: Makes the pitch. And there it goes, and it's a
- 48:47Speaker 1: long one. Hanford is running for it.
- 48:48Speaker 7: So is Dixon.
- 48:49Speaker 1: It's far out in right field, and it may be.
- 48:51Speaker 1: It may. No, no. Hanford's got it.
- 48:54Speaker 5: Oh, Hanford practically climbed that right field wall.
- 48:56Speaker 1: He jumped into the air right against the wall, and he.
- 48:59Speaker 4: Caught the ball.
- 49:00Speaker 1: Oh, what a game, ladies and gentlemen.
- 49:02Speaker 5: Kelly is again saved by the storybook support he's been getting,
- 49:04Speaker 5: and he's grimly hanging on to that one-run lead.
- 49:06Speaker 1: Two out now.
- 49:08Speaker 5: A man on second base, and blockbuster Marks comes to bat.
- 49:11Speaker 5: Marks has hit three hits off Kelly this afternoon, and
- 49:13Speaker 5: this is your ball game right here, folks. Top of
- 49:15Speaker 5: the ninth, two men out, a man on second base,
- 49:17Speaker 5: and the potential winning run at the plate, and here's
- 49:19Speaker 5: Kelly's pitch.
- 49:20Speaker 4: It's a strike. Strike one as Mark takes.
- 49:22Speaker 1: A terrific swing at a slow curve ball. Kelly looks
- 49:26Speaker 1: at second base. Aaron is taking a lead there, trying
- 49:28Speaker 1: to worry him. Kelly rubs the ball. He's looking at Lannigan.
- 49:32Speaker 1: He stretches, and the pitch. A terrific liner over Kelly's. No, no,
- 49:38Speaker 1: it's not a hit.
- 49:38Speaker 7: Kelly blocked the ball.
- 49:40Speaker 1: A miraculous catch, and the ball game is over.
- 49:42Speaker 11: Kelly's won his own game, and St.
- 49:45Speaker 5: Louis wins the World Series.
- 49:50Speaker 1: Hey, Kelly. Kelly, how come you ain't with the boys?
- 49:56Speaker 7: Go on to the dressing room.
- 49:57Speaker 1: I just broke out.
- 49:58Speaker 7: With the beer.
- 49:59Speaker 1: In a minute, Mr.
- 49:59Speaker 7: Dolan.
- 50:01Speaker 1: So you're the guy I called a crackpot. Oh, I
- 50:05Speaker 1: want to shake hands with you, Kelly. Thanks, Jimmy. Thanks. Oh, hey,
- 50:09Speaker 1: what is this? Let me look at that hand. How's
- 50:12Speaker 1: it feel? Well, it's rather painful. When you caught that ball, huh?
- 50:17Speaker 1: Come on, we better get that x-ray. Hey, Monk, find
- 50:20Speaker 1: the doc, will you? We'll be in the examiner's room.
- 50:24Speaker 1: How's it feel, kid? Doc fix you up okay? All right, son. Oh,
- 50:29Speaker 1: it's not too bad. Where'd Doc go? I, um, I
- 50:34Speaker 1: don't know. Well, what did he say when you and
- 50:36Speaker 1: Dolan talked to him? Monk, you're stalling. Now, what is it? Oh, stalling.
- 50:41Speaker 5: Listen, I want to tell you something. I've been playing
- 50:43Speaker 5: baseball since Hector was a pup. But what's it got me?
- 50:46Speaker 5: I mean, it don't matter how long you're up there.
- 50:49Speaker 1: It's what you do. Oh, you've done all right. I'm
- 50:51Speaker 1: talking about you. You had a season, Kelly. A season
- 50:55Speaker 1: like nobody ever had before. Well, I guess I was lucky.
- 50:57Speaker 5: Why, you could pitch for 20 years. You'd never do
- 51:00Speaker 5: no better. You've done it all, kid.
- 51:03Speaker 1: You know... You've got nothing to look forward to. Now,
- 51:06Speaker 1: what's this all about? What did the doctor say? He
- 51:11Speaker 1: says you're all washed up. Your hands, you can't pitch
- 51:14Speaker 1: no more. Oh. Well, I never dreamt my career would
- 51:18Speaker 1: end this way. You and me both. I ain't never
- 51:21Speaker 1: gonna forget it.
- 51:22Speaker 5: I'm gonna spend the rest of my life going around
- 51:24Speaker 5: bragging how Kelly was my roommate.
- 51:26Speaker 2: Well, I guess I'll go on to the station, Monk.
- 51:29Speaker 1: I can get a train in 30 minutes. Give me
- 51:31Speaker 1: your bag. I'm going with you. Now, look, you'll leave
- 51:41Speaker 1: me here for you, see? You'll write me a letter. Oh, sure.
- 51:44Speaker 1: I'll write. What do you figure you're gonna do, kid?
- 51:47Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 51:49Speaker 2: I'd like to get my old job back at the college,
- 51:51Speaker 2: but I don't think there's much chance of that.
- 51:53Speaker 1: No, I know. No, not after the way I left
- 51:55Speaker 1: and what I've been doing since. Oh, jump in, Jubiter.
- 51:58Speaker 1: You ain't murdered nobody or nothing. All you done was
- 52:00Speaker 1: play ball.
- 52:00Speaker 2: And I only did it to get enough money to
- 52:02Speaker 2: marry my girl, but even so, I haven't much hope.
- 52:04Speaker 1: But you ought to know that. I don't get it.
- 52:07Speaker 1: It don't make no sense to me. Well, a lot
- 52:09Speaker 1: of things don't make sense, Monk. I was a chemistry teacher.
- 52:12Speaker 1: I can tell you that now. And the sum of
- 52:14Speaker 1: money I received for teaching science to the youth of
- 52:17Speaker 1: this state for an entire year was a little less
- 52:19Speaker 1: than I got this afternoon, tossing a five-ounce sphere past
- 52:22Speaker 1: a young man holding a wooden stick. But that ain't right.
- 52:25Speaker 5: If it weren't for professors teaching kids, everybody'd turn out
- 52:29Speaker 5: to be dumb clucks like me.
- 52:30Speaker 1: You're doing all right. I hope you keep on. Thanks, Kelly. Well,
- 52:34Speaker 1: I guess I'd better be moving. How's the hand feel now? Oh,
- 52:38Speaker 1: it's fine, fine. Monk, you know, I never had many friends,
- 52:45Speaker 1: but you've been a real one. You've done a lot
- 52:47Speaker 1: for me, and I just want to say that I
- 52:50Speaker 1: just don't know how to say what I want to say.
- 52:51Speaker 1: Me neither, so don't leave us trying. Well, I'll get
- 52:54Speaker 1: in touch with you, Monk, as soon as things are
- 52:56Speaker 1: straightened out. So long, kid. So long. Did she give
- 53:02Speaker 1: me her phone number? I know she did. Yeah, yeah,
- 53:05Speaker 1: it's right here.
- 53:06Speaker 5: Debbie Greenleaf, West Lake 8813. I hope she's back home
- 53:11Speaker 5: by now. She's got to be home.
- 53:21Speaker 1: Debbie, Debbie, I just don't understand. You being here and
- 53:26Speaker 1: all these people.
- 53:27Speaker 4: Oh, Vernon, you are so wonderful, darling.
- 53:30Speaker 8: I'm proud of you.
- 53:32Speaker 4: We're all proud of you.
- 53:33Speaker 1: You mean you know and they know? Everybody knows?
- 53:36Speaker 4: Well, of course. All afternoon we've been rooting for you
- 53:39Speaker 4: like mad. Oh, Vernon, that catch you made in the
- 53:42Speaker 4: ninth inning. Oh, your hand. Your hand, it's all Banny.
- 53:47Speaker 1: It's all right, Debbie. Oh, but it's terrible.
- 53:48Speaker 4: It's terrible. Monk said you'd never pitch again. Monk? Well, yes,
- 53:52Speaker 4: he phoned the house. Oh, we're pals, Vernon. He even
- 53:56Speaker 4: got us tickets for the game. Mother and father and.
- 53:58Speaker 7: Father?
- 53:59Speaker 1: Yes, son. Oh, jumping Jupiter, then you know, too. Yes, Vernon,
- 54:04Speaker 1: I know all about it. And what happened to your
- 54:07Speaker 1: hop today? I wanted to talk to you, Dr. Greenleaf,
- 54:11Speaker 1: to try to explain. I mean about my old job.
- 54:14Speaker 1: Do you think there's any chance at all? You know
- 54:16Speaker 1: better than to ask me that. As a matter of fact, Dr.
- 54:19Speaker 1: Fuller's already taken your place. Oh, he has? Yes, that's
- 54:23Speaker 1: what I thought. Well, I don't blame you.
- 54:26Speaker 5: You see, the owner of that ball club, Mr. Stone, well,
- 54:30Speaker 5: he's given us the money for the research laboratory. And
- 54:33Speaker 5: you're the only man he let us put in as director.
- 54:36Speaker 4: Oh, Vernon. Darling, aren't you going to say something?
- 54:40Speaker 1: I wonder if that stuff really would grow hair.
- 54:44Speaker 6: Oh!
- 54:57Speaker 3: The stands are still cheering the performances of tonight's stars,
- 55:00Speaker 3: and here are Ray Moland and Colleen.
- 55:02Speaker 1: Townsend for a curtain call. Ray, I suppose you'll be
- 55:05Speaker 1: leaving tonight for the World Series. Well, not exactly, Bill.
- 55:09Speaker 1: I know it's hard to believe, but both the Yankees
- 55:11Speaker 1: and the Dodgers seem to think they can win without me.
- 55:13Speaker 4: I suppose Casey Stengel figures he can muddle through with
- 55:16Speaker 4: fellas like Joe DiMaggio.
- 55:17Speaker 1: Well, just in case he's listening, I want to say
- 55:19Speaker 1: in all modesty, Casey, I am available.
- 55:24Speaker 3: Well, while Ray is throwing a curve to Casey Stengel,
- 55:28Speaker 3: I want to ask Colleen Tone-Townsend about her recent tour
- 55:32Speaker 3: of Veterans Hospital.
- 55:33Speaker 4: Well, it was really a thrilling experience, Mr.
- 55:35Speaker 6: Keeley.
- 55:36Speaker 4: The boys in the hospitals gave us a wonderful reception.
- 55:39Speaker 3: I'm sure they're always glad to see a Lutz girl
- 55:42Speaker 3: as lovely as you are, Colleen.
- 55:44Speaker 4: Well, thank you. Naturally, I take Lux soap with me
- 55:47Speaker 4: on a trip. It's always been my complexion care.
- 55:49Speaker 1: I wonder if I should wire Casey.
- 55:52Speaker 4: Oh, Ray, let's face it.
- 55:53Speaker 1: You've struck out.
- 55:55Speaker 6: Oh, well.
- 55:56Speaker 1: What's the play next week, Bill?
- 55:57Speaker 3: Next week, we guarantee a home run, Ray, because our
- 56:01Speaker 3: play is RKO's smash hit, Mr. Blanding's Builds His Dream House.
- 56:07Speaker 3: And the stars will be Cary Grant and Irene Dunn.
- 56:13Speaker 3: The motion picture comedy delighted audiences everywhere. And next Monday night,
- 56:18Speaker 3: Irene Dunn and Cary Grant build their dream house right here.
- 56:23Speaker 1: A wonderful show, Bill. Good night.
- 56:25Speaker 4: Good night.
- 56:25Speaker 1: Good night and thank you.
- 56:32Speaker 3: The Evil Brothers Company, the makers of Lux Toilet Soap,
- 56:35Speaker 3: join me in inviting you to be with us again

- 57:32Speaker 1: Spry is a new Spry, a better than ever Spry.
- 57:36Speaker 1: You'll be a better cook when you use Spry.
- 57:38Speaker 3: Spry in your baking pan, Spry in your frying pan.
- 57:42Speaker 1: You'll be a better cook when you use Spry. Now
- 57:45Speaker 1: get better pies than ever with new, better than ever Spry.
- 57:48Speaker 5: Any filling tastes super delicious in a tender, flaky pie
- 57:51Speaker 5: crust made with new Spry.
- 57:53Speaker 1: Why? Because pure new Spry is blander, creamier, a sure
- 57:57Speaker 1: suppressor of flavor.
