- 0:18L I'm Doogs. I play guitar and bird shallow and drink and crack jokes
- 0:25and talk ship. Really, I'm Mark. I also play guitar, and
- 0:32I cracked shittier jokes than goods. Go Charlie, ah me, I can't
- 0:40even tell when it's mate. Yeah, I'm Charlie White. I'm the vocalist
- 0:44of Barry Shalla. I love screaming in people's faces. It's great fun.
- 0:47I love I love everything about my job. Yeah, it's awesome. Yeah,
- 0:56Maddy, Yeah, on that, I play drums and very Shallow and
- 1:04the last manber to join and drink a sattle bit of vodka. Oh yeah,
- 1:19I'm Brett. I'm Brett. I play bass in Very Callo. I
- 1:26guess this EP is pretty pretty important for us to self titled EP. It
- 1:32is who we are right now. Obviously we're also already in a writing phase
- 1:38for the next stuff. But I think this album lyrically, I yeah,
- 1:47I've got to be careful what. I don't want to speak for Charlie,
- 1:49but I think a lot of a lot of the songs, I guess are
- 1:53about challenges in life and overcoming those challenges. And I think it's you know,
- 1:56not our music. For us, the vibe of our band is really
- 2:02live. We're really really we have a lot of a lot of fun.
- 2:07You know, I don't mean tighters in music. I've mean tighters in a
- 2:10prew, you know. We A big part of who we are as a
- 2:14band is like our vibe. Every time we play, we have an absolute
- 2:17blast. We have a ball, We love playing together. And like I
- 2:21said, I guess when we talk about the EP, one part of our
- 2:25music is the joy and the fun and the engagement, you know, for
- 2:30the people we play for and for ourselves. But there's also a bit of
- 2:34a deeper part to the lyrics. I guess in some of Charlie's stuff that's
- 2:37talking to you know, like I said, those challenges in life and the
- 2:40things we have to kind of deal with, and but not just about winging
- 2:44about it. It's also about what are we going to do about it?
- 2:46What actually are we going to take, how we're going to improve, We're
- 2:49going to reach out, are we going to act? So yeah, I
- 2:52guess that's a little bit of an overview. I don't know where the mark
- 2:54you got something to say, or Charlie you got something to say? Too
- 2:58much? I love the questions. Let to ask you answered all my questions
- 3:06knife meeting your mate, realized brand is a responsible one. We're gonna have
- 3:21a lot of fun with this one. Chris, What was I supposed to
- 3:24be? Ble Like, Hey, I'm Brett from barri Cello and buy our
- 3:30new fucking very cello self titled that type of thing? Was that more?
- 3:32What you look? December first? You can do whatever you want. There's
- 3:37no rules here with me. Now we got that out of the way.
- 3:46Guys, thanks very much for joining us this afternoon. Yeah, happy man,
- 3:51Thanks for having Pleasure Boy so very shallow release your day, your self
- 3:55tit and EP today December the first. So how does it feel finally set
- 4:00it free to the world like you would have been sitting on it for a
- 4:01bit and waiting to get it out there. How's it feel? Oh?
- 4:04It's awesome, man, So anticipated for this. There's been a couple of
- 4:10months in the coming and I'm so proud of AP like there's been a lot
- 4:14of us boys have put so much work this AP you and it's good to
- 4:17see that it's going to see the light of day. And I can't wait
- 4:20to play it and hopefully sell some physical copies on December their so yeah,
- 4:28very exciting times. Anyone else, Yeah, I think to Charlie's point,
- 4:38we're all pretty proud of what we've put together here. And you know,
- 4:42all of us have been in previous outfits and been in other bands, and
- 4:46you know, some of us have had other releases and stuff, and certainly
- 4:50for me, this is definitely the best thing I've ever been a part of.
- 4:57Very proud, and I think the work we did with Jay at Oracle
- 5:01Studios. He was an amazing production partner with us, So we kind of
- 5:08took our songs that we were already proud of and then really just pushed pushed
- 5:12it into some you know, a different space and explored you know, lots
- 5:17of different things. And yeah, I would describe that, you know,
- 5:21to me, it's like really full. It's you know, like I said,
- 5:26I've been part of other metal bands and I don't know, sometimes the
- 5:29music's a bit I don't know, flat or grittle or trebly or I don't
- 5:33know, it just doesn't have that you know, grunt. This in my
- 5:38opinion, this stuff, you know, it's got a really good, really
- 5:41good sound to it. And yeah, like I said, not just what
- 5:45we wrote, but what we worked with Jay on to kind of push those
- 5:47songs to the next level. Shout out j Yeah. Where's he from?
- 5:56Oracle Oracle Studios? Is he a Boma's spodcum? I don't think I think
- 6:04Mark might have missed his calling here. I think Mark should have been like
- 6:08a radio jockey or something. He's just like whacking, like shout out ja
- 6:12man, put a photo out of his wallet like this. Thu Yeah,
- 6:20Chris, his his name is Jay Huxtable like Cosby, Yeah, that one
- 6:29right there. You're just saying his phrases before and now you played him under
- 6:31the bus. It's weird musical point of you guys and what you're going for
- 6:42with it. That's a bit of an interesting part because it's not just one
- 6:47of us that writes, Like I wrote a song on the album the EP,
- 6:50Brett wrote, if you I'm not sureing the shore about lyrically wise,
- 6:56but like musical wise like it. It's got a bit of a different spin
- 7:00to it because it's got three different like guitarists kind of putting their input in.
- 7:06And that's what I think kind of makes when you listen to the songs
- 7:10back to back to back it's not the same guy one guy writing a song,
- 7:14you know, I mean it's each kind of song has got different groups
- 7:16to him. And I think that's what personally, I find a little bit
- 7:21special about the songs that we picked because we had eight i think nine to
- 7:25choose from, and I think the ones we picked we sat down and thought
- 7:30about for a fear fair while the ones that's had those different kind of groups
- 7:34and people like we kind of twist people off a little bit and just like,
- 7:36oh this is a bit different last one, you know, like,
- 7:40yeah, it's it's it's weird because I I have like the music I listen
- 7:49to is kind of like it's it's basically just death core all the time.
- 7:54Whereas Charlie, who listen to what's it not classed as? Is it classes
- 8:01extreme metal or new metal now? And it's fucking awesome. I'm sure,
- 8:09like it's still the metal that made me get my sleep to set out as
- 8:13well. Yeah, Pierced the Veil, you know, Like I like anything
- 8:24from you know, as long as it's good sound in music that i't mind.
- 8:28I feel like we all this into different types of metal and we all
- 8:31have different influences and what we've done is we've just kind of pushed them all
- 8:39together to make whatever it is we do, which is essentially I guess,
- 8:43groove. But it's got influences from so many different types of metal, so
- 8:50like you're not just getting one flavor all the time. You're getting you could
- 8:54be getting anything on any given day. Spot on boys, but when you
- 9:00order Chinese food and everyone picks their own dish. Yeah, like the Noodle
- 9:15decided to release, you decide to release his self titled EP, which for
- 9:20the glam metal fans out there means you've named it after the band, So
- 9:22it's called very shallow like it's it's a pretty confident move on your first album,
- 9:26like David and after the band, like you must be pretty happy with
- 9:30it. Yeah, it's definitely like AP, I mean a self titled sort
- 9:35of AP, like with everyone coming together for the first time on this,
- 9:39you know, like and it's it's going to be awesome, man, I
- 9:41can't wait. It really is, right, So see five songs on the
- 9:48EP, guys, I thought we'd go through them all individually and you can
- 9:52tell us more about them. So there's five years they can take one each.
- 9:56I guess if you like so we'll start with Death of Me. So
- 10:00the Death of Me was actually written about Sorry Maddie about having to say this,
- 10:05but the first drummer that edited the band, Jake Bedford, sort of
- 10:09gave me a story about his father and all that, you know, being
- 10:13a vocalist on the saying that he liked he wanted me to write a lyrical
- 10:16song about it, which I did. It's actually a pretty heavy song,
- 10:20mate, Like if you read the lyrics, he actually found his father on
- 10:24the floor and stuff as well, like as yeah, it's a pretty brutal
- 10:28track, man, but I like it. It was actually the first one
- 10:31I wrote for Barry Shallow and yeah, oh and then we got actually made
- 10:37him cheer up. So I'm quite happy, like with the response I got
- 10:41from Jake with that, yeah you gotta go sorry swarm So Swarm that came
- 10:56about because we needed another song to fill the set and I had it's about
- 11:05vampires, mark, you know. Yeah, So with that song. There
- 11:11was riffs in that song that I written when I was seventeen and I hadn't
- 11:16used them on anything, and I was thought, you know what, I'll
- 11:18chuck him in And there was a bunch of different riffs, and then Brett
- 11:22threw some riffs in there too, and it it. Charlie goes, I
- 11:26want to write this about vampires find vampires, and we're like, yep,
- 11:31done. So we pushed all these rifts together in an afternoon, we got
- 11:37this song out and it actually turned out way better than you'd think a song
- 11:41that came out in like a couple of hours jam, you know, like
- 11:45that song actually came out brilliant. When I think about it, it's punchy,
- 11:48man. I love that song. Yeah song, yeah right, moving
- 11:56on too, probably one of the best song names I've ever heard. Guys
- 12:00have done well for this. Again, those skits so frantic. The credit
- 12:05for that. That's the plast story of this. Yeah, that was that
- 12:09was my mate. That was just a riff that I just literally sat down.
- 12:13I putted it off the court the notes sorry to an a major scale,
- 12:18and stuck it in front of me, and it was the first thing
- 12:20that kind of came out of my head and I just wanted to write a
- 12:24this is a song to be about just like everyone's got all these good voices
- 12:30in their head, bad voices in their head, and it kind of crafts
- 12:33who people are when I wrote the riff, I haven't put like a song
- 12:39together before. So when I wrote the riff, I sat there and I
- 12:41thought, is this good? Is this ship? And I was like,
- 12:45fucking I toy with it in my head for a few days whether to even
- 12:48show the boys the rift, And then when I showed him, like,
- 12:50Charlie is about fucking nutting his pants about it, so I was all right
- 12:54here, So yeah, I gave Charlie the idea kind of about what I
- 12:58wanted to be about. And then I went around Mark's place and me and
- 13:01him kind of jammed out and ended up figuring out a few more roots to
- 13:05it. And then that was the second one we wrote. So we had
- 13:07Death of Me and Schizo. That were the first two songs we wrote,
- 13:11and then after that it kind of it just grows grows on your I reckon
- 13:15lite. When we went to Jay's at Oracle to record it, I remember
- 13:20a few of the boys saying, fuck, I didn't realize how heavy this
- 13:22song is, like when you actually sit in the room and blasted, man,
- 13:26she's got some mad fucking beef to day. Oh fucking grooves as well,
- 13:33right, yeah, And then we got paint with pain. I guess
- 13:37I'll talk about one. Yeah, So that one came from a demo i'd
- 13:43done. Actually prior to joining the band, I was just daming up tracks.
- 13:48I wasn't in the band at the time I left the previous band I
- 13:50was in. I actually had given it to a drama friend at ours,
- 13:56Luke Spector, who's in the drama for Baby Suspects, and he was filled
- 14:00and all this filth and he's just an incredible drummer and we were talking and
- 14:05he was just looking for something to jam to to practice because he was just
- 14:07wanting some new music to practice to. And I sent it to him and
- 14:09he's like, oh my god. I was kind of like, yeah,
- 14:13it's just a demo or whatever. It's kind of cool, and he's like,
- 14:15you've got to use that, You've got to use that. So yeah,
- 14:18when I did end up joining Barrichello, I brought it to the boys
- 14:22and then we worked on it, and you know, I didn't have the
- 14:26whole thing together, so again we were quite often we'll we'll work together on
- 14:31things obviously, modify ad riffs, change rifts, change the little bits,
- 14:35change the drums, whatever, you know, like everyone comes up with ideas,
- 14:39and then once we had the bones of it musically, Charlie put obviously
- 14:43the lyrics together, and that one's a pretty personal one for Charlie about one
- 14:48of his best friends, I'm committing suicide, and I guess that was what
- 14:52I was talking about these the music about the challenges in life, but it's
- 14:56also about what are we, you know, what are we going to do
- 14:58about it? And you know, asking people to reach out, I guess,
- 15:01you know, And that's kind of a song about awareness, I guess
- 15:05lyrically, But but musically it's very fucking groovy and heavy and it's it's I'm
- 15:13pretty it's a cool riff. Man. I'm pretty proud of that one.
- 15:16I like it too, Like like Goodsiy said about Schizophrantic, I'm pretty proud
- 15:18of that that song. It's one of the better songs I've written. So
- 15:24Yeah, and for me, like I said, lyrically, it is important
- 15:26that your music for me as a message or at least means something to somebody.
- 15:31And I think that that song means a lot to me, just because
- 15:37I know how much it means to Charlie. Yeah, Charlie, and it's
- 15:41my favorite song. Play was that yeah, I'm just saying that pain is
- 15:48like when I know that's coming up next in the sett a little bit tingly
- 15:52about oh fuck it, I love let this thing lose. According to Spotify,
- 16:00so also everyone's favorite song to listen to. All right, okay,
- 16:03okay, you've only given him too to listener so far, so it's you're
- 16:14going to make him wait for it. The final one of the eup is
- 16:18called Suffer. Aren't you me? Tell us a bit about that one?
- 16:22Yeah? You ma, you go, I'll take it if you want.
- 16:29It's pretty much Stuffer from that. Originally, it was originally written a lot
- 16:37more harder than it was, and so I had to adjust a bit of
- 16:41the drums to instead of doing just straight doubles all the way through, make
- 16:48it until pattern and yeah, it's I think it sort of made a little
- 16:52bit better, sort of brought it into a bit of a groove for sure,
- 16:57and well, first release, so I don't know about the guitaring and
- 17:04whatever else goes on, but it's now easy. That my hardest song to
- 17:10sort of get through, and I think it's probably one of our best to
- 17:12sort of flog through at the end and finish on the set Yeah, the
- 17:18last jams incredible. It's it's probably important to put out there that when Mark
- 17:32writes songs, Mark gives Matt unplayable drums, what it means that this ship.
- 17:41Yeah, Like but like the way I see it is like if I
- 17:48give unplayable drums, then Matt is going to take that as a challenge in
- 17:56his head, like even if it's not physically possible, He's gonna try to
- 18:00get something as close as he can to like hard as fuck. And I
- 18:06feel like that way, like we're like we better each other. I thinel
- 18:10that's one important part of this band is I feel like, especially with Brett's
- 18:14riffs, Like because Brett writes insane riffs, I feel like every time we
- 18:18write a song, like one of us will be challenged in it all the
- 18:23time. And when Brett kind of gets off on the oh my god,
- 18:30this is you're gonna love it. The clean cutoff, it was just pure
- 18:42clean cutoff, you know, Mabe, It's fucking it's It's something that happens
- 18:49regularly. Brett fucked us up with his guitar riffs that we have to try
- 18:52to play. But I think I think one of the best riffs we've ever
- 18:59written is Suffering to Me. I really love the main driving rip and actually
- 19:03the verse riff as well. It's fucking catchy as farn okay, and that's
- 19:07Mark. Mark wrote that one, and I love it. You know,
- 19:11it's one of my favorite songs to play for sure, Suffer unto Me,
- 19:15like like you said back, like, I'm really comfortable that I really enjoy
- 19:18playing that song. You can release Suffer unto Me and Paint with Pain as
- 19:22singles from the So just say that's all someone's heard of the band. Would
- 19:26you say they're a good sided representation of what do expect? Yeah, there's
- 19:32a lot of different They're just full of power, you know, both songs
- 19:36are full of power. They're both punchy as definitely explains explains very Shelley those
- 19:41two songs, would you say boys definitely? Yeah, Yeah, yeah,
- 19:45Yeah, they're different. They're heavy, and every other song on this EP
- 19:52is just as fucking different really, like, yeah, I've heard his rip
- 19:59last song, you know. I mean, they're all pretty out there.
- 20:00And some of the songs we left off that we have in our lives set,
- 20:06Like we have a song called turn Up the Gas, which is my
- 20:07other one of my other really favorite songs to play because it's just group new
- 20:14metal, isn't it. But it's so yeah. I love playing that live.
- 20:18It just gets the crowd up and going, that's that song? All
- 20:21right? Shut up about songs and on on the album comes later. He
- 20:26started that right, he started, I'm just laying the foundation, I'm just
- 20:33getting everybody or what else is this song? The gas They talk of some
- 20:40of the shows to that ship. Speaking of the shows, gentlemen, if
- 20:45you got any launch buddies, when he shows planned the December first that bad
- 20:51Lands, if you would like to come along, it's going to be yep,
