Transcript
- 0:01When Solomon has the opportunity to ask of anything that
- 0:06his heart desires from God, what does he ask
- 0:10for? He asks for wisdom to
- 0:13rule over the great nation of Israel.
- 0:17He loved and he sought after wisdom and truth so
- 0:22he could be a good and a wise leader.
- 0:26Also, we see the Tree of Life.
- 0:31Proverbs chapter 3 talks about this Tree of Life, and it
- 0:34says, my son, do not forget my law, but let your
- 0:38heart keep my commands, for length of days and long life and
- 0:41peace they will add to you.
- 0:46And then in verse 18, she— that
- 0:51is the Law, the Torah, the Word of God,
- 0:54is a tree of life to those who take hold of
- 0:57her, and happy are all who retain
- 1:01her. We find this tree of life all
- 1:05the way back in the Garden of Eden in Genesis
- 1:09chapter 2, verse 9. Out of the ground made the Lord God
- 1:13to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and
- 1:17good for food, The tree of life also in the midst of
- 1:20the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
- 1:24So the tree of life, which is the
- 1:28Word of God, all of it from Genesis to Revelation.
- 1:32And finally, we see the same tree of life in
- 1:37the Paradise of God in Revelation chapter 2.
- 1:41He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the
- 1:45churches. To him who overcomes, I will give to
- 1:49eat from the Tree of Life, which is in the midst
- 1:53of the Paradise of God. And finally,
- 1:56in Revelation chapter 22, verse 2: In
- 1:59the middle of its street and on either side of the river was the Tree
- 2:03of Life, which bore 12 fruits,
- 2:08each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves
- 2:12of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
- 2:16Listen in as we unpack
- 2:202 Chronicles chapter 1 to 3 with the opening
- 2:24scenes of the story of
- 2:28the kingship of Solomon.

- 7:102 Chronicles 1:1-3:17.
- 7:18Solomon son of David took firm hold of his kingdom,
- 7:22for Hashem his God was with him and made him exceedingly great.
- 7:26Solomon summoned all Israel, the officers of
- 7:30thousands and of hundreds and the judges and all the chiefs
- 7:34of all Israel, the heads of the clans. Then Solomon and
- 7:38all the assemblage with him went to the shrine at Gibeon,
- 7:41for the tent of meeting, which Moses the servant of Hashem had
- 7:45made in the wilderness, was there. But the Ark of
- 7:49Hashem David had brought up from Kiriath-Jearim to the place where David had
- 7:53prepared for it, where he had pitched a tent for it,
- 7:56in Jerusalem. The bronze altar which Bezalel
- 8:00son of Uri son of Hur,
- 8:04had made was also there before the Mishkan of Hashem,
- 8:07and Solomon and the assemblage resorted to it.
- 8:11There Solomon ascended the bronze mitsvayah
- 8:15before Hashem, which was at the Tent of Meeting, and on it sacrificed
- 8:191,000 burnt offerings. That night Hashem appeared
- 8:23to Solomon and said to him, Ask! What shall I grant you?
- 8:27Solomon said to Hashem, You dealt most graciously with my
- 8:31father David, And now You have made me king in his stead.
- 8:36But now, O Hashem, let Your promise to my father
- 8:40David be fulfilled, for You have made me king over a
- 8:44people as numerous as the dust of the earth. Grant me,
- 8:47then, the wisdom and the knowledge to lead this people.
- 8:51For who can govern Your great people?
- 8:55Hashem said to Solomon, Because you
- 8:58want this and have not asked for wealth, property, and glory,
- 9:02nor have you asked for the life of your enemy or long life for
- 9:06yourself, but you have asked for the wisdom and knowledge
- 9:11to be able to govern my people over whom I have made you king.
- 9:17Wisdom and knowledge are granted to you, and I grant you also wealth,
- 9:20property, and glory, the like of which no king before you
- 9:24has had, nor shall any after you have.
- 9:28From the shrine at Gibeon, from the tent of meeting,
- 9:31Solomon went to Jerusalem and reigned over
- 9:35Israel. Solomon assembled chariots and horsemen.
- 9:40He had 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horses
- 9:43that he stationed in the chariot towns with the king in Jerusalem.
- 9:48The king made silver and gold as plentiful in Jerusalem as
- 9:52stones, and cedars as plentiful as the sycamores in
- 9:56Shephelah. Solomon's horses were imported
- 10:00from Egypt and from Qiu. The king's traders would buy them from
- 10:04Qiu at the market price.
- 10:08A chariot imported from Egypt cost 600 shekels
- 10:11of silver, and a horse 150.
- 10:15These in turn were exported by the mall to all
- 10:18the kings of the Hittites and the kings of the Arameans.
- 10:22Then Solomon resolved to build a house for the name of Hashem and
- 10:26a royal palace for himself. Solomon mustered
- 10:3170,000 basket carriers and 80,000 quarriers in the
- 10:35hills, with 3,600 men supervising them.
- 10:43Solomon sent this message to King Hiram of Tyre: In
- 10:47view of what You did for my father David in sending him cedars to build
- 10:51a palace for his residence, see, I intend to
- 10:54build a house for the name of Hashem my God.
- 10:58I will dedicate it to Him for making incense offering of
- 11:02sweet spices in His honor, for the regular rows
- 11:05of bread, and for the morning and evening burnt offerings on Shabbath,
- 11:10New Moons, and festivals, as is Israel's eternal
- 11:15duty. The house that I intend to build will be
- 11:19great, inasmuch as our God is greater than
- 11:22all gods. Who indeed is capable
- 11:25of building a house for Him? Even the heavens to their uttermost reaches
- 11:30cannot contain Him, and who am I that I
- 11:33should build Him a house, except as a place
- 11:37for making burnt offerings to Him? Now send
- 11:41me a craftsman to work in gold, silver, bronze and iron, and in purple,
- 11:45crimson and blue yarn, and who
- 11:48knows how to engrave, alongside the craftsmen I have here in Judah
- 11:53and in Jerusalem, whom my father David provided.
- 11:57Send me cedars, cypress and algum wood from the
- 12:01Lebanon, for I know that your servants are skilled at cutting
- 12:04the trees of Lebanon. My servants will work with yours
- 12:09to provide me with a great stock of timber,
- 12:12for the house that I intend to build will be singularly great.
- 12:16I have allocated for your servants, the woodcutters who fell the
- 12:20trees, 20,000 kor of crushed wheat and 20,000
- 12:25kor of barley, 20,000 batim of wine and 20,000
- 12:29batim of oil. Hiram the king of Tyre
- 12:33sent Solomon this written message in reply: Because
- 12:39Hashem loved His people, He made you king over them.
- 12:43Huram continued, Blessed is Hashem, God of Israel, who made
- 12:46the heavens and the earth, who gave King David a wise son,
- 12:51endowed with intelligence and understanding, to build a house for
- 12:54Hashem and a royal palace for himself.
- 12:58Now I am sending you a skillful and intelligent man, my master
- 13:02Huram. The son of a Danite woman, his father a
- 13:06Tyrian. He is skilled at working in gold,
- 13:09silver, bronze, iron, precious stones, and wood;
- 13:13in purple, blue, and crimson yarn, and in fine linen; and
- 13:17at engraving and designing whatever will be required of him,
- 13:21alongside your craftsmen and the craftsmen of my lord, your father
- 13:25David. As to the wheat, barley, oil, and wine
- 13:29which my lord mentioned, Let him send them to his servants.
- 13:33We undertake to cut down as many trees of Lebanon as you need
- 13:37and deliver them to you as, as rafts by
- 13:40sea to Jaffa. You will transport them to Jerusalem.
- 13:45Solomon took a census of all the aliens who were in the Land of
- 13:49Israel besides the census taken by his father David, and they were found
- 13:53to be 153,600. He made
- 13:5870,000 of them basket carriers and 80,000 of
- 14:02them quarriers, with 3,600 supervisors to see
- 14:06that the people worked. Then Solomon began
- 14:10to build the House of Hashem in Jerusalem on
- 14:14Mount Moriah, where Hashem had appeared to his father
- 14:18David, at the place which David had designated, at the threshing
- 14:22floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
- 14:25He began to build on the 2nd day of the 2nd month of the 4th
- 14:29year of his reign.
- 14:34These were the dimensions Solomon established for building the House
- 14:38of Hashem: its length in emote by the former measure was 60,
- 14:43and its breadth was 20. The length of
- 14:46the porch in front was equal to the breadth of the house.
- 14:4920 emote, and its height was 120.
- 14:53Inside he overlaid it with pure gold.
- 14:57The house itself he paneled with cypress wood. He overlaid
- 15:01it with fine gold and embossed on it palms and chains.
- 15:06He studded the house with precious stones for decoration.
- 15:10The gold was from Parvaim. He overlaid
- 15:14the house with gold, the beams, the threshold, its walls
- 15:17and doors. He carved cherubim on the walls.
- 15:22He made the Holy of Holies. Its length was equal
- 15:25to the breadth of the house, 20 emote, and its breadth was 20 emote.
- 15:30He overlaid it with 600 kikkarim of fine
- 15:34gold. The weight of the nails was 50 shekels
- 15:37of gold. The upper chambers he overlaid with gold.
- 15:43He made 2 sculptured cherubim in the Holy of Holies,
- 15:46and they were overlaid with gold.
- 15:49The outspread wings of the cherubim were 20 emote across,
- 15:54one wing 5 emote long touching one wall of
- 15:58the house, and the other wing 5 emote long touching the wing
- 16:02of the other cherub, one wing of the other cherub 5
- 16:06emote long extending to the other wall of the house, and its
- 16:10other wing 5 emote long touching the wing of the first cherub.
- 16:16The wingspread of these cherubim was thus 20
- 16:19emote across, and they were standing up facing the house.
- 16:23He made the curtain of blue, purple, and crimson yarn and fine linen,
- 16:28and he worked cherubim into it. At the front
- 16:32of the house he made 2 columns 35 emote high, The capitals
- 16:35on top of them were 5 emotes high.
- 16:39He made chainwork in the inner sanctuary and set it on
- 16:43the top of the columns. He made 100 pomegranates and set them
- 16:47into the chainwork. He erected the columns
- 16:51in front of the great hall, one to its right and one to its
- 16:55left. The one to the right was called Jakin and the one to
- 16:59the left Boaz.
- 17:04Romans 6:1-23.
- 17:12What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace
- 17:17may abound? God forbid! How shall we,
- 17:20that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
- 17:24Know ye not that so many of us as were baptized into
- 17:27Jesus Christ Were baptized into His death?
- 17:32Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death,
- 17:36that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of
- 17:40the Father, even so we also should walk in
- 17:44newness of life. For if we have been planted together
- 17:48in the likeness of His death, we shall be also in the likeness
- 17:52of His resurrection. Knowing this,
- 17:56that our old man is crucified with Him,
- 18:00that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth
- 18:03we should not serve sin. For he
- 18:07that is dead is freed from sin.
- 18:11Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe we shall also live with Him,
- 18:15knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dies
- 18:19no more, Death has no more dominion over him.
- 18:23For in that he died, he died to sin once; but
- 18:28in that he lives, he lives unto God.
- 18:31Likewise reckon yourself also
- 18:35to be dead indeed to sin, but alive
- 18:39to God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not
- 18:43sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that you should obey
- 18:47it in its lusts. Neither yield
- 18:50your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin,
- 18:54but yield yourselves to God as those that are alive from
- 18:58the dead, and your members as instruments of
- 19:01righteousness unto God. For sin
- 19:05shall not have dominion over you, for you
- 19:08are not under the law. But under grace.
- 19:14What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but
- 19:18under grace? God forbid! Know you not that
- 19:21to whom you yield yourselves servants to obey,
- 19:25his servants you are to whom you obey, whether of
- 19:29sin unto death, or of obedience unto
- 19:33righteousness? But God be thanked!
- 19:37That we were the servants of sin, but you have obeyed
- 19:41from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered to
- 19:46you. Being then made free from sin, you became
- 19:50the servants of righteousness. I speak after
- 19:53the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh.
- 19:57For as you have yielded your members servants to uncleanness
- 20:02and to iniquity unto iniquity, even so now yield
- 20:07your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
- 20:11For when you were servants of sin, you were free from righteousness.
- 20:18What fruit had you then in those things whereof you
- 20:21are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.
- 20:25And now being made free from sin, and become servants to God,
- 20:29you have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting
- 20:33life. For the wages of sin is death,
- 20:38but the gift of God is eternal life through
- 20:41Jesus Christ our Lord.
- 20:47Psalm 16:1-11.
- 20:51Preserve me, O God, for in you
- 20:55do I put my trust. O my soul, you have said
- 20:59unto the Lord, You are my Lord. My goodness extends not
- 21:02to you, but to the saints that are in the earth, and to
- 21:06the excellent, in whom is all my delight.
- 21:09Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god.
- 21:13Their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names
- 21:18into my lips. The Lord is the portion of my inheritance
- 21:23and of my cup. You maintain my
- 21:27lot. The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places.
- 21:31Yes, I have a goodly heritage. I will
- 21:34bless the Lord who has given me counsel. My reins also
- 21:39instruct me in the night seasons. I have set the
- 21:43Lord always before me. Because He is at my right hand,
- 21:47I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad,
- 21:51and my glory rejoices; my flesh also
- 21:55shall rest in hope. For You will not leave my soul in hell,
- 22:00neither will You suffer Your Holy One to see corruption.
- 22:04You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is
- 22:08fullness of joy; at Your right hand there are
- 22:12pleasures forevermore.
- 22:16Proverbs 19:20-21.
- 22:20Hear counsel and receive instruction, that you may be wise in
- 22:24your latter end. There are many devices in a man's
- 22:29heart; nevertheless, the counsel of the Lord,
- 22:32that shall stand. I want to
- 22:36speak to you today from our reading from 2 Chronicles chapters
- 22:391 through 3. And in the beginning of this book
- 22:43that we are now diving into, we see the inauguration of
- 22:48Solomon into the role of king over Israel.
- 22:52And we see in chapter 1, one night that
- 22:56Hashem, or the Lord, appeared to Solomon and
- 22:59said to him, ask, what shall I grant you?
- 23:03What would you have asked for?
- 23:08So Solomon did not think selfishly.
- 23:12He did not ask for long life or for wealth or for riches or
- 23:16any of that. Instead, he said, Lord,
- 23:19you've dealt most graciously with my father David, and now you have
- 23:23made me king in his place. Oh Lord,
- 23:26let your promise to my father David be fulfilled.
- 23:29You've made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth.
- 23:33So here comes his request. Grant me then
- 23:37the wisdom and the knowledge to lead this people,
- 23:41for who can govern your great people?
- 23:45He asks for wisdom.
- 23:49And because he doesn't ask for something selfish,
- 23:52but he asks for something practical— I need wisdom to
- 23:56govern this great people— the Lord is going to greatly bless
- 24:00him. And the Lord answers him and says, because you want this and have not
- 24:04asked for wealth or property or glory or asked
- 24:08for the life of your enemy or long life for yourself,
- 24:12but because you have asked for wisdom and knowledge to be able to govern my
- 24:16people, and wisdom and knowledge
- 24:20are granted to you, and I grant you also wealth
- 24:24property and glory, the like of which no king before
- 24:28you has had, nor shall any after you have.
- 24:33So God says, I'm going to answer your request
- 24:37and give you wisdom, but I'm also going to give you wealth and property
- 24:41and glory of which no other king will ever attain.
- 24:46So the Israel Bible Commentary to this verse, verse 10,
- 24:50grant me the wisdom and the knowledge to lead this people.
- 24:53Reads as follows: When given the opportunity to make a request
- 24:57of Hashem, Solomon asks for wisdom and understanding
- 25:01to be able to judge the nation properly. Just as David
- 25:05his father executed true justice among all his people,
- 25:091 Chronicles 18:14, though he was a man of battle and
- 25:13had shed blood, 1 Chronicles 28:3,
- 25:17Solomon's reign will be similarly characterized by justice.
- 25:22While the wars to secure Israel's borders are significant,
- 25:27what personifies the land of Israel in general and the
- 25:31city of Jerusalem in particular is justice and
- 25:35righteousness. Thus, Eretz Israel's inheritance
- 25:39through justice— justice allows for the land to flourish,
- 25:43and conversely, a lack of justice leads to
- 25:47its downfall and destruction.
- 25:50The Beit HaMikdash, that is the temple built
- 25:53by Solomon, is the seat of justice.
- 25:57Deuteronomy 17:8-10. And it is where
- 26:01the high court would meet. In making this request
- 26:05of God, Solomon sought to ensure that he would lead
- 26:08the nation of Israel in the land of Israel in
- 26:12justice and truth. Today,
- 26:16the State of Israel has an established judicial system
- 26:20which continues to pursue justice in the Holy Land, ensuring that
- 26:25the population is law-abiding and protecting the rights of its citizens.
- 26:31Like the High Court of old, Israel's Supreme Court is located
- 26:35in Jerusalem.
- 26:48Jumping into chapter 3,
- 26:51I want to look at verse 10. He— that is Solomon— made
- 26:552 sculptured cherubim in the Holy of Holies, and they
- 26:58were overlaid with gold. The Israel
- 27:02Bible commentary to this verse reads as follows: Solomon builds
- 27:062 great cherubim in the Holy of Holies paralleling the
- 27:10cherubim which God placed in front of the Garden of Eden to guard
- 27:14the way to the Tree of Life.
- 27:18Solomon's cherubim symbolize these guardians
- 27:22showing that what lies behind them, the Ark
- 27:26holding the— holds the roots to the Tree of Life,
- 27:29the Torah, which is contained in the Ark and
- 27:34the commandments therein are the pathway to life.
- 27:38As King Solomon writes about the wisdom of the Torah,
- 27:41for they will bestow on you length of days,
- 27:45years of life and well-being, and she is a
- 27:49tree of life to those who grasp her. That comes from Proverbs
- 27:53chapter 3, verses 2 and verse 18.
- 27:57So let me expand on that.
- 28:00In the Garden of Eden was the Tree of Life,
- 28:04and the Tree of Life, you could say what
- 28:08it says in Proverbs, the Torah is the Tree of Life.
- 28:12And when I say the word Torah, I don't just mean the first 5 books
- 28:16of the Bible, of the Tanakh. When I say Torah,
- 28:20I mean the entire Bible, all of it, from Genesis to Revelation.
- 28:25So Jesus, when he came,
- 28:28he said, I am the way, I am the truth,
- 28:32and I am the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
- 28:37And also in the Book of John, it says, in the beginning was
- 28:41the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
- 28:45God. And then the Word came down
- 28:49and dwelt and lived among us.
- 28:53Jesus is the Word made flesh,
- 28:57the Torah made flesh.
- 29:00So Jesus is the path to
- 29:04life. He is the living Torah. He is
- 29:08the Word of life. And so when
- 29:12we take in the Word, when we consume
- 29:16it, when we chew on it, reflect on it,
- 29:19meditate on it, put it into our heart,
- 29:22hide the Word of God into our heart, we are
- 29:26communing with Jesus. He is
- 29:31the way and the truth and the life.
- 29:35And so we are not able to follow or obey the Torah on
- 29:39our own just by being obedient.
- 29:43We will fall. Our flesh is weak and we have a sinful nature.
- 29:47But when we have asked Jesus into our heart,
- 29:50when we have repented of our sin,
- 29:53and the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us,
- 29:57then by the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit,
- 30:00we follow the Lord Jesus, and we
- 30:04obey His commands because we love Him
- 30:08as we are led by His Holy Spirit. So The
- 30:12Tree of Life that we see in the Garden of Eden is also
- 30:17seen in the Book of Revelation. In Revelation 20 and
- 30:2121, it talks about the Tree of Life there on the banks of the river,
- 30:25and that the leaves of this Tree of Life bring healing
- 30:29to the nations. It's interesting, an actual
- 30:33Torah scroll that when you roll it all out and
- 30:37read from it, The Torah scroll is called—
- 30:40the pages are called leaves,
- 30:44like the leaves of a tree. So this
- 30:48Torah, this living document, this living book of
- 30:53God communicating with us the way to live
- 30:56life, the way to live the kingdom,
- 31:00is pictured as a tree of life but
- 31:04it also points us to Jesus Christ.
- 31:09Have a blessed day, and we'll see you tomorrow.
