- 0:08Speaker 1: This is Me Eat podcast coming at you shirtless, severely
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten in my case, underwear listening podcast. You can't
- 0:18Speaker 1: predict anything presented by First Light, creating proven versatile hunting
- 0:24Speaker 1: apparel from Marino bass layers to technical outerwear. For every hunt,
- 0:29Speaker 1: First Light, go farther, stay longer. All right, everybody, we
- 0:35Speaker 1: got a boatload of boatload of camera guys here who
- 0:40Speaker 1: filmed I don't know, man, bazillions of episodes of Meat Eater.
- 0:45Speaker 1: How how how many years have you guys been on it?
- 0:48Speaker 1: Just go around the rumor, but say who you are
- 0:50Speaker 1: and how many years you've been on the show, or again,
- 0:52Speaker 1: any kind of rough estimate of how many episodes you've done?
- 0:56Speaker 1: Rick Smith and I think I started work in two
- 0:58Speaker 1: thousand and sixteen was the first episode, which was season
- 1:01Speaker 1: maybe the end of season six, started season seven, and
- 1:05Speaker 1: I don't I don't know how many total. Was your
- 1:07Speaker 1: first one when we went to Mexico with Garrett? Yeah,
- 1:10Speaker 1: the first one about night terrors for the first time.
- 1:15Speaker 1: That was my first one. Yeah. I had done Apex
- 1:17Speaker 1: Predator with Remy Warren, a couple of episodes of that.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Let's try out. They're skeptical of I don't know, skeptical,
- 1:26Speaker 1: but we have we have to be intellect So he passed.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I don't know. We could talk about just that trip
- 1:37Speaker 1: for an hour and it would be funny. There should
- 1:40Speaker 1: talk about Garrett's night tears. I was sharing the tent
- 1:43Speaker 1: with him. Yeah, it was terrifying on the mountains and
- 1:46Speaker 1: Cartel Country. No night tears. That was the thing. What
- 1:51Speaker 1: was the thing that you said that night? Avalanche? Avalanche? Yeah,
- 1:54Speaker 1: I thought it was an avalanche. Woke up, grab war
- 1:57Speaker 1: gear and screaming. It's like, dude, we're in Mexico. Yeah,
- 2:04Speaker 1: tells us. Yeah, you guys can't give me snickers right
- 2:07Speaker 1: before bed? No, sweet Lauren. Yeah. Uh. My first show
- 2:16Speaker 1: was Washington ELK with you guys. Maybe eighteen, I'm guessing
- 2:20Speaker 1: remember that one. Oh so your new relative newbie remember that?
- 2:23Speaker 1: I mean four years? I guess, I don't know five
- 2:26Speaker 1: if I didn't doing something. But you've been filmed for
- 2:27Speaker 1: a long time. You bet you filmed that show Mountain
- 2:29Speaker 1: Man for a million years, ten years on Mountain Men.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Then I was with Newberg Randy Newburg on on Your
- 2:34Speaker 1: Own Adventures when he started. That was seven seasons. I
- 2:37Speaker 1: think that we did and kept a couple of tolls
- 2:39Speaker 1: in the beer business. Yeah, until just recently. No, Yeah,
- 2:44Speaker 1: threw in the reins on the selling of beer. No
- 2:48Speaker 1: longer going to sell, just gonna be, you know, the
- 2:52Speaker 1: regular peer pressure guy. I wanted to bring bloodies this morning,
- 2:56Speaker 1: but nobody really was into it. So NK a bloody man,
- 2:59Speaker 1: for sure. He's never filmed anything. I did work on
- 3:05Speaker 1: mountain men though, Uh, Rich, Uh, I think I started
- 3:13Speaker 1: in I remember your first trip, that's when you got
- 3:16Speaker 1: the name Rich Pounder. Yea. Yeah. Although I was telling
- 3:19Speaker 1: these guys, I feel like when I got in my
- 3:21Speaker 1: thirties that I've kind of like phased out of that.
- 3:23Speaker 1: You lost I kind of lost it. Yeah, I lost
- 3:25Speaker 1: a little edge. Uh So I liked you because you
- 3:29Speaker 1: were a good walker and you and you were real
- 3:32Speaker 1: enthusiastic about that soup can full of bacon grease here
- 3:36Speaker 1: that mac in grease, man, We'd add that to house.
- 3:38Speaker 1: It was great. I hadn't There was a lot of
- 3:41Speaker 1: first for me on that trip. I hadn't, like really,
- 3:43Speaker 1: I hadn't hiked off of a trail in the woods,
- 3:46Speaker 1: hadn't pooped, never pooped outdoors, never never pooped outdoors before.
- 3:50Speaker 1: No first time. Yeah, that was a big moment. Uh.
- 3:54Speaker 1: And then Land went on your suspenders, did you know?
- 3:57Speaker 1: I no, I got. I got feel when you're wearing
- 4:01Speaker 1: when you're wearing your suspenders, it's right, just a little
- 4:06Speaker 1: my shoe hasn't happened here. Stories Yeah, yeah, what else
- 4:11Speaker 1: do we do on that one? Hell of an intro
- 4:13Speaker 1: to the woods? That trip? Yeah, wet ass snow, British Columbia. Yeah, bears, bears.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Although you know, it's like we were on a grizzly hunt,
- 4:23Speaker 1: but we didn't see that many grizzlies. We saw the
- 4:25Speaker 1: one like the first night. I think I'm remembering right,
- 4:28Speaker 1: And then we saw one I should have got. I
- 4:30Speaker 1: should have just in hindsight, it's the best opportunity we had.
- 4:33Speaker 1: It was, Yeah, but there was like you didn't know
- 4:36Speaker 1: if it was male or female or whatever. It was something.
- 4:39Speaker 1: And then we saw one like way later. But you
- 4:40Speaker 1: can't do that the ground check it. Yeah, that's right.
- 4:45Speaker 1: That hunt is, that's a that hone is no more past.
- 4:48Speaker 1: I think it might. I've been getting some intel. I
- 4:51Speaker 1: don't know. I shouldn't say that it's gonna come back
- 4:53Speaker 1: in some form, some new form. I don't know if
- 4:55Speaker 1: that's true. Yeah, can anyone listening understand that? I don't
- 5:00Speaker 1: know if that's true. A lot of people writing and yeah, um,
- 5:04Speaker 1: just a quick question when you like, how did you
- 5:06Speaker 1: feel accepting that job, like going to Grizzly Hunt not
- 5:09Speaker 1: having pooped out in the woods. Oh, I was so stoked.
- 5:12Speaker 1: I'd already done a lot of like filming in like
- 5:14Speaker 1: pretty tough places and tough conditions, so I kind of
- 5:16Speaker 1: like I was into the the tough stuff, so that
- 5:20Speaker 1: wasn't scary. And I had seen some episodes and I
- 5:23Speaker 1: had a buddy who had worked on this show on
- 5:26Speaker 1: Meat Eater that brought me on and I was like, oh, yeah,
- 5:29Speaker 1: I'd be down to work on it. And then yeah,
- 5:31Speaker 1: but like pursuing Grizzly, like getting close to them on
- 5:35Speaker 1: purpose was like not a deterrent. When I was that age,
- 5:37Speaker 1: I like, really wasn't that scary. Like now, I'd probably
- 5:40Speaker 1: be a little more hesitant based on some of the
- 5:42Speaker 1: experiences that we've had working on the show, But at
- 5:47Speaker 1: that time, I was like pretty into getting into like
- 5:49Speaker 1: some I just I just wasn't as worried. It's like
- 5:52Speaker 1: you're kind of young and not really you don't know
- 5:53Speaker 1: what to worry about yet. Yeah, it wasn't like, oh,
- 5:55Speaker 1: Grizzly could maull my face off. I was like, oh,
- 5:57Speaker 1: it's a bear, like whatever. We got guns and stuff. Well,
- 6:00Speaker 1: all right. But when I was younger, I didn't care
- 6:01Speaker 1: if I lived or not. Yeah, I wasn't really thinking
- 6:04Speaker 1: of mortality in the same way. It just was no,
- 6:08Speaker 1: it's just you know, I know I had zero not zero.
- 6:12Speaker 1: I just didn't matter if I stayed alive. Yeah, well,
- 6:15Speaker 1: just before you had kids and Mary and yeah, I
- 6:17Speaker 1: hadn't really like I don't have kids now, but I'm
- 6:20Speaker 1: very happy in my life, so I calculate risk differently.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Back then, I was like, oh whatever. Summer I got married.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Right before I got married was the first time I
- 6:28Speaker 1: had a feeling of not wanting to of like really
- 6:30Speaker 1: not wanting to die. And it was the last time
- 6:33Speaker 1: I topped a big tree out, Oh your last arborist,
- 6:36Speaker 1: the last time I talked. While I was just doing
- 6:38Speaker 1: it for a neighbor up in Alaska, we topped a
- 6:40Speaker 1: big sick of spruce out. I climbed up there and
- 6:42Speaker 1: knocked top out, and I when that tree stopped going,
- 6:49Speaker 1: I realized that something had changed and I didn't like it,
- 6:53Speaker 1: and I was never gonna do it again. And I
- 6:56Speaker 1: think it was great. How old were you, Steve when I,
- 7:00Speaker 1: I don't know, I got married, I don't know, somewhere around. Yeah,
- 7:05Speaker 1: I think you can started thinking about it different then,
- 7:08Speaker 1: you know, when you're younger, you're coming here and I
- 7:10Speaker 1: don't think you're there yet, buddy, No, no I care
- 7:14Speaker 1: if I look, I just don't. I don't worry about
- 7:18Speaker 1: the next day as much as the present day. You know, Yeah,
- 7:22Speaker 1: because I don't mean not like you're I don't mean
- 7:24Speaker 1: like SUICIDALITES mean, you're not the thing in your head,
- 7:28Speaker 1: isn't boy? I better not die. That's gonna be horrible
- 7:30Speaker 1: and everybody, um, which is something I think now about
- 7:33Speaker 1: with my family. Yeah, yeah, you don't really think about it. Yeah.
- 7:37Speaker 1: That was a good shoot though. That was a fun trip,
- 7:39Speaker 1: especially because my wife, UM tells me what she's gonna
- 7:42Speaker 1: do if I do die. What's she gonna do? She
- 7:45Speaker 1: laid out the life plan and she made it just
- 7:47Speaker 1: despicable to men, just to keep getting off the rails
- 7:53Speaker 1: in my death. It's so bad. He doesn't want to
- 7:55Speaker 1: repeat it, but we talked about it a couple of
- 7:57Speaker 1: episodes ago, like you die spear fishing. Here's what I'm
- 8:02Speaker 1: going to do. At least I'm going to marry, so
- 8:07Speaker 1: bear that in mind. It's gonna nothing but team sports
- 8:15Speaker 1: or something. Yeah, he's really in the golf paint the house,
- 8:18Speaker 1: Dan Vil, Broncos colors, Okay, dirt. I think two thousand
- 8:22Speaker 1: fifteen as well was my first season, maybe two thousand fourteen,
- 8:27Speaker 1: little caveat. I put a door in the meat Eater
- 8:30Speaker 1: office before I started filming with the old office and
- 8:35Speaker 1: the ZPC West office. You were there as you were
- 8:39Speaker 1: there as a contractor. No, I was there as me.
- 8:41Speaker 1: I interviewed with Yanni and this guy Dan, and he said,
- 8:44Speaker 1: how about putting that door? Yeah? I said, well, we
- 8:46Speaker 1: don't really need us. Well, it's like, you know, I'm
- 8:49Speaker 1: around to work and uh. I had a background in
- 8:52Speaker 1: photography and also building, and they're like, well, until we
- 8:55Speaker 1: need someone in the field, can you put a door
- 8:58Speaker 1: in the office. I was like, yeah, remember that. Didn't
- 9:01Speaker 1: they meet your first Yeah, so Steve had yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 9:07Speaker 1: my dad worked on wild within ye boat operation. Yeah,
- 9:14Speaker 1: we had to run a boat and man it was
- 9:16Speaker 1: we're having a lot of problems with the jet intake
- 9:18Speaker 1: on this boat. You wouldn't try. It was the stupidest
- 9:21Speaker 1: weeds and stuff. Yeah, he had to strip down and
- 9:23Speaker 1: get in the water. And this is November. He had
- 9:25Speaker 1: to strip down under the boat to clean the intake out.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Oh my god, dude. So that that that kind of
- 9:31Speaker 1: cleared the way from me. Once I threw that name
- 9:34Speaker 1: out there, I was like, if he's half as tough
- 9:35Speaker 1: as as this old man. But then yeah, that was
- 9:40Speaker 1: put that door and then uh got on a shoot
- 9:43Speaker 1: just out of I guess fate. Yeah, you remember which one.
- 9:50Speaker 1: He was your first one. He had the Turkey Hunt
- 9:53Speaker 1: Nappa with Joe and Briant. I was like, holy shit, man,
- 9:58Speaker 1: this is this is fun. Did you get bad poison?
- 10:01Speaker 1: Ivy No, But that was when Joanni had that like
- 10:04Speaker 1: two months two months stin of it. I didn't get
- 10:08Speaker 1: it that trip, but I think i've since then now.
- 10:11Speaker 1: I think I'm like over sixty you've done. He's done
- 10:16Speaker 1: a lot. How many total of the episodes? Oh god,
- 10:22Speaker 1: o Yann? But not to not. I don't think Joanni
- 10:29Speaker 1: was around before any guys were around. Oh ye's been
- 10:31Speaker 1: o g baby yeah Fairbanks right. Oh, I don't know
- 10:35Speaker 1: what year. Yeah, was the first year we met. You
- 10:39Speaker 1: were supposed to be having a ten year anniversary party,
- 10:42Speaker 1: just you and I going. I don't know what we're
- 10:45Speaker 1: gonna do, Go watch a movie or something good. I
- 10:48Speaker 1: love that. We're also joined by Danny Bolton from Hawaii
- 10:54Speaker 1: who happens to be in town and he's on some
- 10:56Speaker 1: He's on a couple of the new episodes we have
- 10:58Speaker 1: coming out, and we're gonna cover some other stuff that
- 11:01Speaker 1: we're gonna get into the life of bad Country camera man.
- 11:05Speaker 1: And I think these guys are prepared to tell the
- 11:07Speaker 1: thing they appreciate most about working on the show and
- 11:10Speaker 1: the thing they like most about me. That's what the said. Yeah,
- 11:15Speaker 1: my understanding is what's gonna happen here today? Chester? It
- 11:20Speaker 1: is not here? So Chester is a divester. Did you
- 11:24Speaker 1: guys hear about this? His boy had a baby a
- 11:26Speaker 1: month early. Chester almost uh. I thought he's going to
- 11:30Speaker 1: deliver the baby. It was just wham whoa baby month early.
- 11:36Speaker 1: If anybody could do it, Chester could do Yeah, he couldn't.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Ta yesterday. Happy Papa right now? Yeah, they're happy. I
- 11:44Speaker 1: mean they got a couple of little complications because the
- 11:46Speaker 1: baby is born so early. But in the hospital. Are
- 11:49Speaker 1: they at home? No, no, no, they get their hanging
- 11:51Speaker 1: out in the baby. Yeah, he said, everything's good, just
- 11:54Speaker 1: is just a little yeah, but there's no you know,
- 11:56Speaker 1: they had to put him out some oxygen month early.
- 11:59Speaker 1: That's kind of given aways. I hope. I'm not divulge
- 12:01Speaker 1: you too much about Chester's personal life. But now he's
- 12:03Speaker 1: doing great. His wife's doing great, Danielle, He's gonna be
- 12:06Speaker 1: a good Dad's good. They're good. No, they should be.
- 12:10Speaker 1: If you had to apply to have a kid, I
- 12:11Speaker 1: think that I would have approved the application. Oh yeah, Uh,
- 12:17Speaker 1: that clears up for Chester. One problem is, I don't
- 12:19Speaker 1: know if you guys know everybody here knows that Chester
- 12:21Speaker 1: is opening for Trampled by Turtles in Atlanta. I'm going, dude,
- 12:24Speaker 1: already bought tickets, okay. And there was a problem. There
- 12:27Speaker 1: was a problem where if the if the birth didn't
- 12:30Speaker 1: happen right, he could have gotten in some trouble. But
- 12:33Speaker 1: now he's way clear. Oh yeah, he's gonna because the
- 12:37Speaker 1: baby was late, right, but now he's a okay, he'll
- 12:41Speaker 1: have a month a couple of months old baby by
- 12:43Speaker 1: the time he goes what's the date on ap oh,
- 12:47Speaker 1: no days before Pearl is he written originals? Have you
- 12:50Speaker 1: talked to him about his I'm talking about you know,
- 12:53Speaker 1: all anybody does is tell him what he ought to do. Yeah,
- 12:55Speaker 1: I haven't told what you ought to do late, at
- 12:57Speaker 1: least I don't have an update. Every time I see
- 12:59Speaker 1: m I tell what he ought to do. I go on,
- 13:02Speaker 1: what you ought to do? Something like that, and then
- 13:04Speaker 1: I tell what right, and I like to contradict whatever
- 13:08Speaker 1: I told him to do the last time. That sounds
- 13:10Speaker 1: very familiar. I told him I was a new dad
- 13:13Speaker 1: a few times ago. I told him, I said, I
- 13:15Speaker 1: think you should play as Chester the molester and just
- 13:18Speaker 1: embrace that situation, to embrace the molester hand and like
- 13:22Speaker 1: build kind of like a career like that. You know
- 13:24Speaker 1: him so weird now that he's a dad. So yeah,
- 13:31Speaker 1: we're having That's what he saved in my phone as
- 13:34Speaker 1: so when I you know what you call on your
- 13:36Speaker 1: vehicle that says it back to you, it makes me chuckle.
- 13:38Speaker 1: At the time I'm changing out that, he's going, Oh man,
- 13:43Speaker 1: I gotta go out. I might phil key pause so
- 13:46Speaker 1: I can go out and change that. Oh it's right
- 13:48Speaker 1: here on my phone. I'm gonna change that. That's horrible.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Trampled by Turtles does have a new album out. Um
- 13:56Speaker 1: so they've been uh you know, Dave Simon has been
- 13:58Speaker 1: on the show Chester's opening for them. Their new album
- 14:01Speaker 1: comes out October, produced with and this is interesting Jeff
- 14:07Speaker 1: Tweety from Wilco. That's a name, dude, nice makes me
- 14:12Speaker 1: kind of want to hear that. Wilcome. I think they're there,
- 14:17Speaker 1: like their album am and then their album being there. Damn,
- 14:20Speaker 1: that's some good stuff. Good stuff d long time ago. Uh,
- 14:28Speaker 1: here's a funny story. The guy know who's a I've
- 14:32Speaker 1: actually talked to him before because he's he's a Bobcat
- 14:35Speaker 1: trapper and makes bobcat trapping equipment and he traps bobcats
- 14:39Speaker 1: as a researcher people that are studying bobcats. He catches
- 14:43Speaker 1: bobcats for that and he also traps bobcasts for the
- 14:45Speaker 1: commercial markets. And he's a bobcat expert. He wrote me,
- 14:49Speaker 1: no unrelated to Bobcats. His dad had a friend who's
- 14:53Speaker 1: got the name that I wish I had. I might
- 14:56Speaker 1: legally change it to this Donnie Mountain that years ago
- 15:04Speaker 1: his dad, so he wrote me this note. He texted
- 15:06Speaker 1: me this note. Years ago, my dad had a friend,
- 15:09Speaker 1: Donnie Mountain, most nervous wreck of a human you've ever
- 15:13Speaker 1: been around in a violent temper. This is a great detail.
- 15:19Speaker 1: He would light a cigarette while opening a gate for
- 15:22Speaker 1: you while hunting, then he put it out to get
- 15:25Speaker 1: back in the truck. He never killed anything all the
- 15:31Speaker 1: years we took him. Once my d Once my dad
- 15:36Speaker 1: had a secretary friend make up a real official looking
- 15:39Speaker 1: letter on photo copied Utah Game and Fish letterhead explaining
- 15:45Speaker 1: the extensive work that goes into wildlife management and part
- 15:49Speaker 1: of that utilizes hunters success, and that they respectfully asked
- 15:54Speaker 1: that he not applied for a tag in the future
- 15:57Speaker 1: because it takes away from other hunters opportunities that would
- 16:00Speaker 1: likely be more successful than him. He says, I'll never
- 16:07Speaker 1: forget when he got it in the mail and came
- 16:09Speaker 1: over just living talking about those assholes at Game Scardi Ego.
- 16:19Speaker 1: After that man, another buddy of mine who's in the
- 16:22Speaker 1: fur business at one time, referred to him on this
- 16:25Speaker 1: podcast as Joe Beaver, which he said his wife likes
- 16:28Speaker 1: quite a bit. He sent me these trail camp photos,
- 16:32Speaker 1: so some guy he knows was watching this buck and
- 16:35Speaker 1: he sent me these beautiful trail camp post. This is
- 16:37Speaker 1: giant white tail. And then there's a grip and grin
- 16:40Speaker 1: of the dude's wife next to her car where she
- 16:43Speaker 1: actually ran over and killed his target buck it driving
- 16:50Speaker 1: at night. It's like the buck um. I was gonna
- 16:58Speaker 1: tell a whole bunch about youth Dear Huh youth dear season. Yeah,
- 17:02Speaker 1: you guys just got back hu great time, but the
- 17:06Speaker 1: weather turned and I have never seen uh sloppyer gear
- 17:13Speaker 1: management in the wet and rain. Then I saw exhibited
- 17:19Speaker 1: on this year's youth Dear hunt by the youth or
- 17:22Speaker 1: by by the youth, mindless, overwhelmed, just no, no having
- 17:29Speaker 1: a great time, just mindless gear management, all of them.
- 17:38Speaker 1: It was rampant. It was particularly rampant in in my
- 17:42Speaker 1: tent because I was in my tent paying attention to
- 17:44Speaker 1: what was going on in there, just coated in mud.
- 17:47Speaker 1: I guess I'll just go like roll around on the
- 17:49Speaker 1: sleeping bags in my rainware. Just just disaster. But all
- 17:59Speaker 1: I had at the time of a lot like it
- 18:01Speaker 1: doesn't it's it doesn't. They don't. They're not at a
- 18:04Speaker 1: point yet where that stuff occurs to him. When you
- 18:08Speaker 1: were a kid, were you fastidious about all that stuff?
- 18:11Speaker 1: The type of the kid too, because I've got to
- 18:15Speaker 1: And we camped together in the same tent this weekend
- 18:18Speaker 1: and I had I gave him a big like how
- 18:20Speaker 1: to be a good camper speech before we started, And
- 18:24Speaker 1: at some point we're like, where's Mabel And it's like, Oh,
- 18:26Speaker 1: she's in the tent, cleaning up her stuff her room
- 18:31Speaker 1: at home. It's tidy and is not so much and
- 18:34Speaker 1: so yeah, it has an explosion of gear in the
- 18:37Speaker 1: in the tent, but Mabel's stuff was tidy, So I
- 18:41Speaker 1: would say, go, I'd be like, go into the entrance
- 18:44Speaker 1: of the tent, don't stop on anything, take off all
- 18:49Speaker 1: of your rain wear, take off your rubber boots. Then
- 18:55Speaker 1: you're good to then enter the tent area just they can't.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Was it a floorless tant or yah, wonderful of your
- 19:05Speaker 1: I gotta take three sleeping bags, like I take three
- 19:07Speaker 1: sleeping bags on to get them cleaned out. Yeah, I'm
- 19:11Speaker 1: gonna just take him down and have someone get to
- 19:13Speaker 1: try to clean them up. Dude, one of your buddies
- 19:16Speaker 1: like coerce the kids, like, hey, you should you should
- 19:18Speaker 1: be as dirty as you can at camp with your Dad,
- 19:21Speaker 1: Did you do that? Danny? Danny is with us. Oh yeah,
- 19:23Speaker 1: I just told him, like, Steve's gonna love it if
- 19:25Speaker 1: you just roll right in this tan, just glad. Just
- 19:28Speaker 1: a couple of somersaults in there, a little gymnastics. But yeah,
- 19:31Speaker 1: Jimmy boy was like there's a few spots where he
- 19:34Speaker 1: was just crawling up the stuff hands and knees and
- 19:37Speaker 1: just coated it or going down this stuff too, just
- 19:41Speaker 1: sliding on his butt. You know those hand boat pumps, yeah,
- 19:44Speaker 1: Bilge pumps. Yeah. Yeah. We got back from getting Jimmy's
- 19:48Speaker 1: bucking the rain and I had Danny. I had him
- 19:52Speaker 1: go out on a rock in the river and I
- 19:54Speaker 1: had Danny take that Bilge pump flush it, and I
- 19:57Speaker 1: had him staying at rock and I hosed him down
- 20:00Speaker 1: with the Bilge poem. Yeah, that was just pumping in.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Steve just hosting the kids, just boots everything, hands, try
- 20:08Speaker 1: to get him cleaned upside out there is rough. Oh man,
- 20:13Speaker 1: I'll tell one quick story. Uh, we were hunting in
- 20:19Speaker 1: the rain and we're going into the wind. It was
- 20:21Speaker 1: beautiful and we're in the great area and I was like, man,
- 20:22Speaker 1: I just feel like we're gonna get a buck we're
- 20:24Speaker 1: gonna get a buck and come around a corner. And
- 20:26Speaker 1: I just peek around a corner. I see, Uh, it
- 20:29Speaker 1: was a little forky And I didn't even look at
- 20:32Speaker 1: him that long. But he doesn't seem to be aware
- 20:35Speaker 1: of us, but he's kind of looking in our direction.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Did you ever look at him through knocks? Yeah? Was
- 20:40Speaker 1: he looking down the hill and he was kind of
- 20:42Speaker 1: looking off to the side of us. Yeah, and I
- 20:45Speaker 1: and so I got Jimmy, I'll set up and he
- 20:48Speaker 1: shoots the buck, and uh, I think that buck was
- 20:50Speaker 1: watching a coyote because when he shoots, a kyote comes
- 20:54Speaker 1: squirting out from probably thirty forty yards below that buck.
- 20:58Speaker 1: And I think that Kyle was caused and just the
- 21:00Speaker 1: right amount of distraction where he didn't catch a snake
- 21:06Speaker 1: in around the corner. It worked out perfect. Oh, we
- 21:10Speaker 1: had such a good time. We found um. Last year,
- 21:14Speaker 1: we had found a fossilized clam bed. But I didn't
- 21:16Speaker 1: think you were allowed to take I didn't think off
- 21:20Speaker 1: uh blm Land. I didn't think you're allowed to collect
- 21:24Speaker 1: fossilized clams. But it turns out you can collect in
- 21:29Speaker 1: in quote, in reasonable quantities. You can collect fossilized mollusks
- 21:36Speaker 1: and we found a rock it was about fifty pounds.
- 21:40Speaker 1: My daughter wanted we were a couple miles and my
- 21:42Speaker 1: daughter wanted me to call it out for it was
- 21:45Speaker 1: just a fifty pound rock of fossilized clams and we
- 21:47Speaker 1: want to find smaller ones. We found, uh, trilobites. I
- 21:52Speaker 1: brought a big block about the size of a big platter.
- 21:57Speaker 1: That's just a fossilized clam bed. It's just fossil clampossils
- 22:01Speaker 1: and the little shells too. Yeah, you still see the
- 22:03Speaker 1: shells in there on the on the shore line or
- 22:06Speaker 1: up on the hills. Yeah. Yeah, I looked like at it.
- 22:10Speaker 1: You could see the layers up above and it kind
- 22:11Speaker 1: of just fallen off. And there was the little muscles too, right,
- 22:15Speaker 1: the little shells. We found a skeleton that hadn't fossilized,
- 22:19Speaker 1: but it was set in rock. What kind of skeleton.
- 22:22Speaker 1: I'm sure it was a bison. We we didn't hunt
- 22:26Speaker 1: the youth season, but my youth hunted with me. We
- 22:30Speaker 1: went out for Montana's rifle opener, but we were hunting antelope.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Prong horn. Keep trying to say a prong horn, but
- 22:37Speaker 1: it's so hard. I totally switched. What's the switch for christ?
- 22:44Speaker 1: Technically it's a prong horn. I resist that ship normally,
- 22:48Speaker 1: but I totally switched. You call a prong horn now
- 22:51Speaker 1: one of the I don't call it speed goats, speed goat,
- 22:56Speaker 1: speed goat. I never heard that. What about Loper, it's
- 22:59Speaker 1: it's meant to be like you're super like in the loop.
- 23:02Speaker 1: One of the cool kids a shortening of Antelope. But
- 23:09Speaker 1: we had we had some milestones. Uh well, they were
- 23:12Speaker 1: good campers. But there's kind of three major milestones. One
- 23:17Speaker 1: was that iina, uh, spend a little time skinning, and
- 23:21Speaker 1: she's not like I'm not gonna be like, go ahead
- 23:23Speaker 1: and skin that deer out, like that's not gonna happen.
- 23:25Speaker 1: But she's showing interest and she's like working at it,
- 23:27Speaker 1: which was good to see. But then two, they're driving
- 23:32Speaker 1: around the canyam, so you can just be like, after
- 23:34Speaker 1: you shoot a couple of anilope, like, hey, go get
- 23:36Speaker 1: to canam and drive it back up here, and they can.
- 23:39Speaker 1: They can do that, so it sort of takes like
- 23:41Speaker 1: a step of work out. Then I don't know how
- 23:46Speaker 1: to rate these. One or the two is number one
- 23:49Speaker 1: and the other ones in the number two spive milestones
- 23:52Speaker 1: for the weekend. But they're opening gates. Yes, they both
- 23:58Speaker 1: have like the strength and know how to like and
- 24:01Speaker 1: if it's too much for one, then the other one
- 24:03Speaker 1: can pitch in. They can use They were able to
- 24:05Speaker 1: get through all of the gates that we had to
- 24:06Speaker 1: work over the weekend. Yes, they smoking a cigarette. Well
- 24:14Speaker 1: that's funny because my twelve year old it just can't
- 24:18Speaker 1: figure it out. I can't do it. You know what.
- 24:21Speaker 1: These gates, although they're old and crusty, they have the
- 24:24Speaker 1: uh like the instead of just having a piece of
- 24:27Speaker 1: wire around the top, they've got that latch deal. What
- 24:31Speaker 1: do you call those? Yeah, I don't know, but you
- 24:34Speaker 1: know I'm talking about you probably buy it murder exactly.
- 24:38Speaker 1: But lastly, I was hanging in camp and they were
- 24:42Speaker 1: sort of directing the conversation. My brother in law are
- 24:45Speaker 1: just kind of like kicking back, you know, having some beers,
- 24:47Speaker 1: and I just realized there was a moment when I'm like,
- 24:49Speaker 1: you know what, I'm just like listening and enjoying the
- 24:51Speaker 1: conversation and I'm not the one having to be like, So,
- 24:55Speaker 1: what was the most exciting part of the hunt today
- 24:57Speaker 1: for you girls? You know, they were just sort of
- 24:59Speaker 1: doing that was like, this is very fun. Yeah, it's
- 25:02Speaker 1: a nice moment. My my daughter something switched in her um.
- 25:09Speaker 1: She's like very now, very impatient to be old enough
- 25:12Speaker 1: to deer hunting next year, and has like wants her
- 25:15Speaker 1: own Buyos, wants her own buy no harness, wants her
- 25:17Speaker 1: own backpack. She's fired up. So that's where my focus
- 25:21Speaker 1: is gonna be next. So that brought up another milestone. Sorry,
- 25:24Speaker 1: we're just killing it this weekend. The buy those things,
- 25:26Speaker 1: I just sort of not even thinking it was like, oh,
- 25:28Speaker 1: throwing a couple of sets of Buyos into the gearbag,
- 25:31Speaker 1: and then I offered him up. Oh yeah, we would
- 25:32Speaker 1: like to carry by those two different times, both in
- 25:37Speaker 1: the same evening, but we're I'm like driving out. They're
- 25:40Speaker 1: kind of like already glass the field and like it
- 25:42Speaker 1: ain't nothing here, let's keep moving. And my girls there
- 25:45Speaker 1: like between me and Cameron in the canamn, like jabbing
- 25:48Speaker 1: each other and fighting and just being pains in general,
- 25:50Speaker 1: pains in the ass. I'm like, look around and find
- 25:53Speaker 1: some prong horn. That's what we're doing, you know, And
- 25:55Speaker 1: five seconds doesn't go buying and it's like, oh, there's
- 25:57Speaker 1: a herd that look, I don't see one. Like they're
- 26:00Speaker 1: right there. I'm like, I don't see him. She's like,
- 26:03Speaker 1: seriously right there, Glass. I'm like, oh, yeah, no ship,
- 26:06Speaker 1: you know. Unfortunately, we try to pull the quick U
- 26:10Speaker 1: turn and then just get behind the little ridge. But man,
- 26:13Speaker 1: three weeks in the prong Horn season they take that
- 26:16Speaker 1: ship anymore. But yeah, then later we're like, we try to.
- 26:21Speaker 1: We didn't know that they busted, so we put the
- 26:23Speaker 1: big stock on them. Thirty minutes later, we've cleared the
- 26:26Speaker 1: place out. That hurts gone and we're just moving down
- 26:29Speaker 1: the ridge. I've kind of like dropped my edge and
- 26:32Speaker 1: you know, on the ridge top now it's getting ready
- 26:35Speaker 1: ahead to the canam again and uh maybels like they're
- 26:39Speaker 1: still in the field. There's some right there and I
- 26:40Speaker 1: look over. I'm like, where they're not. It's like, no,
- 26:43Speaker 1: they're right there. They're bedded. Like what I'm looking looking.
- 26:47Speaker 1: She's like, I'm like where She points Glass. I'm like,
- 26:49Speaker 1: oh yeah, look at that. It was getting low light
- 26:53Speaker 1: and I don't know if my eyes are just going
- 26:55Speaker 1: a little bit. And when those you forget too and
- 26:57Speaker 1: you're so used to looking at elk were times is
- 27:00Speaker 1: what I've been hunting the last month. And then you
- 27:02Speaker 1: go to an animal that's like a sixth of the
- 27:04Speaker 1: size and then they bed down. I mean it's like
- 27:06Speaker 1: looking at a mouse out in a alf alfa field,
- 27:09Speaker 1: you know. But so anyways, you had another milestone and
- 27:13Speaker 1: I'm like, I don't even have to glass anymore. I
- 27:15Speaker 1: just can hang out and wait for them to be
- 27:17Speaker 1: like there they are. Uh, you should introduce them to
- 27:21Speaker 1: a range find or that. Oh, my kids will spend
- 27:24Speaker 1: hours range ranging everything everything. It's pretty fun. And my
- 27:29Speaker 1: daughter is not like a good great glass yet because
- 27:32Speaker 1: a lot of times I look and I think of
- 27:33Speaker 1: like the best I can tell you must be looking
- 27:34Speaker 1: at her knee, or she's got him aimed up in
- 27:38Speaker 1: the sky. She doesn't really, She just sort of it's fatalistic.
- 27:41Speaker 1: She just looks through whatever they happen to be aimed at.
- 27:44Speaker 1: She hasn't figured out that you can kind of point
- 27:46Speaker 1: them around where you want to be. She's sort of like,
- 27:48Speaker 1: I guess, you know, I'll look there and take my lumps.
- 27:50Speaker 1: You know. My girl's favorite is after about five minutes
- 27:55Speaker 1: of regular glassing, they flip them backwards. Everything gets really
- 28:00Speaker 1: far away. Oh god, you know what, We're talking a
- 28:04Speaker 1: lot about how how much a human scroll you can handle?
- 28:09Speaker 1: This is this this guy wrote in No, that's a
- 28:13Speaker 1: great story. He says, there was a podcast episode a
- 28:16Speaker 1: while back where y'all were questioning how much weight the
- 28:18Speaker 1: human scroll. He calls it a scroll I like that
- 28:22Speaker 1: could take before tearing home. He says, I will tell
- 28:25Speaker 1: you in confidence. Does that mean I shouldn't tell No?
- 28:30Speaker 1: I think he's The way I'm reading that is he's
- 28:33Speaker 1: saying that I'm telling you this confidently, like this story,
- 28:36Speaker 1: this happened if I said to you, but that's not
- 28:41Speaker 1: I'm not I'm not gonna say his name, so I
- 28:44Speaker 1: don't portray his trust. But if I said to you
- 28:46Speaker 1: or you know what I you just think he's using
- 28:48Speaker 1: it that way. But is this like a rope testing
- 28:50Speaker 1: where they test like the breaking strength like roper. We
- 28:53Speaker 1: had a guy send this. He had this scientific analysis
- 28:56Speaker 1: and even a video, like an engineering video of what
- 28:59Speaker 1: happens to your scroll if it's pulled tent sile strength
- 29:03Speaker 1: not Garrett. Oh, here's a joke for you. Do you
- 29:09Speaker 1: hear about Do you hear about the guy? Do you
- 29:12Speaker 1: hear about the guy that put glitter all over scrolled him. Yeah,
- 29:17Speaker 1: it's pretty nuts. So he goes on to say, I
- 29:24Speaker 1: will tell you. So he goes on to say, I
- 29:27Speaker 1: will tell you in confidence that when my dad was younger,
- 29:30Speaker 1: he worked as a framer dirts tracking and fell off
- 29:35Speaker 1: a scaffold. It was caught on a picket fence by
- 29:40Speaker 1: his testies. When he came to he was hanging upside
- 29:46Speaker 1: down like the squirrels that I often see on Steve's
- 29:48Speaker 1: Instagram page. Or that raccoon right was raccoons. He was
- 29:54Speaker 1: able to get them surgically reattached and went on to
- 29:58Speaker 1: have four of the most hunting is fishing his son's.
- 30:03Speaker 1: He told me he had almost completely forgotten about it
- 30:05Speaker 1: until he got a vast sectomy and cried out loud
- 30:09Speaker 1: when they snipped the scar. Tissue are supposed to be
- 30:14Speaker 1: sedated when you have a best sector. Did I ever
- 30:16Speaker 1: tell you my vast activy story? Nod you curl your hair,
- 30:21Speaker 1: go umbe away. We're talking. We're talking on I can
- 30:27Speaker 1: vouch for that. Your wide away. The numbing too. Sometimes
- 30:30Speaker 1: it didn't work for me. I felt a lot of it.
- 30:33Speaker 1: I'll tell it real quick, dark, I gotta say this too,
- 30:37Speaker 1: because Dark Colburn said that he he said it felt
- 30:43Speaker 1: like someone was like start trying to start a lawnmower,
- 30:46Speaker 1: like a pull start. He didn't tell me that confidence.
- 31:00Speaker 1: One more thing. Now we're gonna get Okay, I tell
- 31:01Speaker 1: this quick story about my tell cram my quick vast
- 31:05Speaker 1: acty story. So I've all I've long suffered from a
- 31:09Speaker 1: thing in my my left side of my scroll, where
- 31:12Speaker 1: I have a thing called a very castell. It's like
- 31:15Speaker 1: this little nerve ball humid days man, So I never
- 31:21Speaker 1: wore I don't wear boxers, so that's always bugged me.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Now I go down to get my vast actomy and
- 31:31Speaker 1: you're laying there and you're just shooting the breeze and
- 31:34Speaker 1: they numb me up and I don't even know he
- 31:37Speaker 1: started yet. And he's got a side done. Huh okay,
- 31:42Speaker 1: I'm saying, so what's going on? Already did one side?
- 31:45Speaker 1: What are you guys talking about? Like Polygy got it? Yeah?
- 31:50Speaker 1: And my Dennis hunts too, So he does a side
- 31:56Speaker 1: and he's like, I'm not work three or four minutes
- 32:00Speaker 1: and he's already done, and I can't even tell that
- 32:01Speaker 1: he's gotten going yet. And we're talking, talking talking and priests.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Do I realize a long time has gone by and
- 32:09Speaker 1: he's still said so if he got one half done
- 32:11Speaker 1: that fast, why have we been talking for twenty five minutes?
- 32:14Speaker 1: And I lift my head up and look, it's just
- 32:17Speaker 1: blood everywhere. I said, nerves, it's blood vessels, that very
- 32:23Speaker 1: that that little growth thing in my sack. He was
- 32:27Speaker 1: having a hard time digging the pipe he's trying to find.
- 32:31Speaker 1: He's having a hard time digging it out of that
- 32:34Speaker 1: blood vessel sack. Oh, bleeding all over the place at
- 32:39Speaker 1: one point, make here, make a quick video of this.
- 32:43Speaker 1: You make a quick video, like literally, I want to
- 32:47Speaker 1: act out. We'll put it on Instagram. What are you
- 32:49Speaker 1: wearing like? Uh, you're wearing like a medical thing? Right? Yeah,
- 32:52Speaker 1: what are you wearing like? Are you talking about like
- 32:54Speaker 1: a toilet seat cover over your area? Right? You just
- 32:58Speaker 1: make it from the waist down. If I remember, the
- 33:06Speaker 1: guy has like the helper dude who I kept saying yes, sir, no, sir.
- 33:10Speaker 1: So he thought I'll remember he thought I was in
- 33:12Speaker 1: the military. He's like, that's not part of the story.
- 33:17Speaker 1: So I look up, okay, and there's just blood everywhere,
- 33:21Speaker 1: and he's getting frustrated, and at one point he goes
- 33:24Speaker 1: like this, I'm gonna demonstrate what he does. So he's
- 33:26Speaker 1: down there having surgery on might scrolled him and he
- 33:29Speaker 1: goes like this. He's standing over me. My computer is
- 33:32Speaker 1: my sack, and he does this. This is not what
- 33:36Speaker 1: you want to see someone do. He goes it, goes
- 33:47Speaker 1: back to work. I was the conversation after he I
- 33:54Speaker 1: don't know, I've never done a vast sector me. I
- 33:57Speaker 1: don't know how he will is uh unsure that he'd
- 34:04Speaker 1: got the right hose. What would happen if you got
- 34:09Speaker 1: the wrong hose? Well, either way. Afterward, this is the
- 34:13Speaker 1: bad part after me. Afterward, you gotta keep supplying specimens.
- 34:19Speaker 1: See feels effective. But nowadays you don't need to go
- 34:23Speaker 1: down there and do it, you know, do the whole
- 34:26Speaker 1: thing in the bathroom there. Maybe some people still do that.
- 34:28Speaker 1: When you're seeing a lot of your own blood, like
- 34:30Speaker 1: you're used to seeing blood, hands are like, yeah, I
- 34:33Speaker 1: was gonna ask if you had some kind of your
- 34:35Speaker 1: own Like you're not feeling anything, but you're seeing stuff
- 34:41Speaker 1: that should be inside of a body, and you're was it.
- 34:45Speaker 1: I don't like, I don't like. I don't mind seeing
- 34:47Speaker 1: my own bloods. But I don't like people. I don't
- 34:49Speaker 1: like any kind of needles and hoses and stuff getting
- 34:51Speaker 1: installed in me. I was told someone I want sold
- 34:54Speaker 1: a doctor. I could cut your arm off and eat
- 34:57Speaker 1: it and it wouldn't bother me. But you putting in
- 35:00Speaker 1: my arm is really upsetting to me. Did that doctor
- 35:04Speaker 1: take it? As you know? I was just trying to
- 35:07Speaker 1: explain how much I don't like. But I got over that.
- 35:11Speaker 1: Eventually got over. Oh one last thing. Never get to
- 35:23Speaker 1: what we're here to talk about. I we've gotten a
- 35:28Speaker 1: lot of letters from biblical scholars. I don't even know
- 35:31Speaker 1: how to explain this. Someone mentioned something about a good Samaritan, okay,
- 35:38Speaker 1: and I had said, my understanding in the Good Book
- 35:42Speaker 1: is that Samaritans were um bad people. Okay. So the
- 35:50Speaker 1: fact that the fact that a Samaritan, when you say
- 35:54Speaker 1: to someone, oh, you're a good Samaritan, you're basically saying
- 35:58Speaker 1: so surprising that a person as bad as you must
- 36:03Speaker 1: be as a Samaritan, did that. It's not like, if
- 36:09Speaker 1: you're a good Samaritan, be like you're an unlike I
- 36:12Speaker 1: had always been told, you're an unlikely candidate to do
- 36:15Speaker 1: a good deed. That's why it's noteworthy, because people that
- 36:18Speaker 1: you'd expect to do a good deed, I don't know
- 36:20Speaker 1: what the hell. That priest comes by, he does do anything.
- 36:21Speaker 1: That guy comes by, they won't do anything. And then,
- 36:23Speaker 1: of all people, a Samaritan, right, it would be like
- 36:30Speaker 1: saying the good bad person. Well, we got letters from
- 36:35Speaker 1: Biblical scholars. I don't know if I want to get
- 36:38Speaker 1: into it, but I'm gonna do it. Yeah, biblicals this
- 36:46Speaker 1: gets rich. It's complicated. I'm never gonna say a good
- 36:48Speaker 1: Samaritan ever. Again. I don't say it, but anytime someone
- 36:51Speaker 1: does say, I'm just gonna shut up. Biblical Samaritans were
- 36:55Speaker 1: people of mixed Jewish descendency. Following the split of Israel
- 37:02Speaker 1: in the Old Testament, Israel aka the Northern Kingdom was
- 37:07Speaker 1: taken into captivity by the Assyrians. While they're bloodlines mixed
- 37:14Speaker 1: between Assyrians and Jews, the people of Judah a ka
- 37:21Speaker 1: the Southern Kingdom, were taken captive by the Babylonians. Following
- 37:28Speaker 1: their subsequent return to Jerusalem, they declared their Jewish purity
- 37:35Speaker 1: by bloodline and lineage. Many of the Northern Kingdom Jews
- 37:41Speaker 1: living north of Jerusalem in an area known as Samaria
- 37:45Speaker 1: could no longer do this. They now had mixed ancestry
- 37:48Speaker 1: between themselves as Jews and Assyrians, who took them over.
- 37:53Speaker 1: These partial Jews became known as Samaritans and were utterly
- 37:59Speaker 1: despised razed by the pure bloods. No self respecting Jew
- 38:04Speaker 1: of the time would deign to socialize with, visit with,
- 38:08Speaker 1: or even help an ailing Samaritan, as they were considered
- 38:13Speaker 1: to be all but dogs. This is someone else writing
- 38:17Speaker 1: in I'll point out context is important on this story.
- 38:21Speaker 1: This Chris Gil writing in No, this is a stranger
- 38:28Speaker 1: writing in who I will not divulge their uh you
- 38:33Speaker 1: take it up with them, But I'm not gonna tell
- 38:34Speaker 1: you who they are. I'm just this is someone explaining
- 38:37Speaker 1: this stuff. They're all but dogs and doing someone make
- 38:41Speaker 1: them ceremonial and ceremonially unclean. That said, the priests and
- 38:46Speaker 1: Levite who first passed the injured man in the parable
- 38:50Speaker 1: of the good Samaritan would not even touch their own countrymen,
- 38:56Speaker 1: also out of fear of being made unclean, so self loathing.
- 39:01Speaker 1: While the people of Samaria were of mixed descent and
- 39:04Speaker 1: also may have practiced some pagan forms of worship. There
- 39:09Speaker 1: is nothing really in scripture to indicate that they were
- 39:12Speaker 1: bad people, as I me Steve indicated. While there may
- 39:18Speaker 1: be other reputable documentation available outside of the Bible to
- 39:22Speaker 1: support this, the fact in and of itself has nothing
- 39:25Speaker 1: to do with the idea of being a good Samaritan.
- 39:29Speaker 1: The point was a man considered by the culture to
- 39:33Speaker 1: be less than human, crossed geopolitical lines to help a
- 39:38Speaker 1: man who was in need and being despised by his
- 39:42Speaker 1: own countrymen. He did something that none of the three
- 39:47Speaker 1: Jews the injured man included would have done for him.
- 39:52Speaker 1: Jesus point in the story all people are our neighbors,
- 39:57Speaker 1: whether they're socially acceptable or not, and whether they're covered
- 40:01Speaker 1: in human waste or not. That's a referral to the
- 40:05Speaker 1: episode we did about the Great House Rescue. Thanks for
- 40:09Speaker 1: your time. Another guy that wrote and explained that a
- 40:12Speaker 1: that a scholar was trying to get Jesus in a
- 40:16Speaker 1: tight spot when he told the parable and he said, Okay,
- 40:20Speaker 1: who are our neighbors? And you wanted him to try
- 40:23Speaker 1: to draw some hard lines about who the Jews should
- 40:26Speaker 1: be friendly with, and and as he liked to do,
- 40:29Speaker 1: he answered with the story Jesus, Jesus. That's when he
- 40:35Speaker 1: told the parable. Someone's like, so, who are neighbors? Mr?
- 40:39Speaker 1: Smart guy, And he said, well, let's talk about that
- 40:42Speaker 1: for a man, and he told the story of the
- 40:47Speaker 1: good Samaritan being like, that's your neighbor at least suspecting one. Yeah.
- 40:53Speaker 1: Lesson of tolerance had the thought I feel like and
- 41:03Speaker 1: the thought, all right, let's get into it. So right now,
- 41:07Speaker 1: is it you that right now? Yeah? Like season eleven
- 41:11Speaker 1: is where episode one is out. I've explained a thing
- 41:15Speaker 1: about show business before where we license our show out.
- 41:18Speaker 1: But right now you can go watch, Um, you can
- 41:23Speaker 1: watch for free. I'll point out you can go to
- 41:26Speaker 1: the meater dot com and watch for free. That's the
- 41:30Speaker 1: first place to go see the new episodes that make
- 41:33Speaker 1: up are season eleven. It's available now. We're gonna put
- 41:36Speaker 1: up one a week and one is available right now.
- 41:40Speaker 1: Episode one uh Hunting Sickle Blacktail Deer in Southeast Alaska
- 41:46Speaker 1: with Evan Hayford, who has been on the show a
- 41:47Speaker 1: couple of times from Black Rifle Coffee Company. Was I've
- 41:51Speaker 1: been on I think at least two of those hunts,
- 41:53Speaker 1: maybe three. They've been extremely difficult. Did you guys, crack
- 41:57Speaker 1: the puzzle all this time, crack the code. We got
- 42:00Speaker 1: a deer. But no, I'm no, I'm no. I know
- 42:04Speaker 1: less about it now than really, well, you're not in
- 42:07Speaker 1: the alpine. I know less about hunting the rainforest now
- 42:10Speaker 1: than I ever did. You did have a breakthrough with rattling, though,
- 42:15Speaker 1: Oh can you bleep that? Sorry? Just make over what
- 42:20Speaker 1: he said? Does that spoiler? No, it's not a spoiler.
- 42:23Speaker 1: Oh no, we show it. What am I saying? Yeah?
- 42:25Speaker 1: It's I mean there was a question of if rattling
- 42:32Speaker 1: would bring in I'll just come out and saying yeah,
- 42:35Speaker 1: someone will correct me. I'm sure pioneered. I believe that
- 42:41Speaker 1: people will write in and being like you have to
- 42:43Speaker 1: do right. I believe I'm the first person to ever
- 42:47Speaker 1: rattle in a stick of blacktail deer. There. I just
- 42:50Speaker 1: said it. Oh, I witnessed it. I don't know if
- 42:52Speaker 1: you're the first, but he did it. I am first.
- 42:57Speaker 1: Why wouldn't it work though, because as they just I
- 43:00Speaker 1: don't know, because they're just goofy, little, shy little they
- 43:05Speaker 1: don't come in just like they're not. They don't socialize,
- 43:11Speaker 1: they're just shy. All you hear about the people that
- 43:14Speaker 1: have the epic hunts is like, oh, we just got
- 43:15Speaker 1: out of the truck and blew on the call and
- 43:17Speaker 1: three of them came running. I don't mean, okay, they
- 43:21Speaker 1: come to call. I don't know why not. I don't
- 43:23Speaker 1: know why. In my head, not in Yanni's in my head.
- 43:27Speaker 1: I just don't think of them as I don't think
- 43:30Speaker 1: of the boxes like social in that way and all
- 43:34Speaker 1: fired up in that they're like smashing up another. But
- 43:37Speaker 1: when you're calling them, you're usually calling him using distress
- 43:40Speaker 1: calls and fawn bleats and dough noises, and you're like
- 43:44Speaker 1: you're generating some excitement from does that come in and
- 43:47Speaker 1: carry bucks with him? I just don't think of bucks
- 43:51Speaker 1: running out of the brush because there's a ratlin noise. Yeah,
- 43:56Speaker 1: they've got little teen little antlers. It's just like but
- 44:00Speaker 1: obviously they do get out. I don't know, I don't
- 44:03Speaker 1: know why I thought that, but it works. Apparently. Yanni
- 44:07Speaker 1: lays in better Night. I think, don't know how good rattling. Well,
- 44:09Speaker 1: that's the thing. It might be the misconception, and it
- 44:11Speaker 1: might be the thing that is going to like turn
- 44:13Speaker 1: a lot of would be successes into real successes. Might
- 44:19Speaker 1: be a fluke. I mean he he was running. He
- 44:21Speaker 1: was coming in like responding to it. He was coming. Yeah,
- 44:26Speaker 1: there you go. He was curious. Ninth hour two or
- 44:29Speaker 1: ten or twelfth whatever they say. Love's coming hard. Really
- 44:33Speaker 1: easy place to work, that miserable, especially with electronics. Okay,
- 44:39Speaker 1: you guys are tasked with sharing your favorite story ever
- 44:41Speaker 1: from working on the show. It's my understanding favorite story.
- 44:45Speaker 1: By that, I mean like something that we're like, uh,
- 44:50Speaker 1: like something I said that really stuck with you changed
- 44:54Speaker 1: changed course. What was the quote you said earlier about
- 44:57Speaker 1: chastity of intelligence or something like that? Was theticism is
- 45:00Speaker 1: the chastity of the intellect? There you go. There's a
- 45:02Speaker 1: lot of quotes like that. I didn't call you guys
- 45:04Speaker 1: something once that I had you later, I told you
- 45:06Speaker 1: never to talk about it because it could give me
- 45:07Speaker 1: a lot of trouble. Bitch bitches, bitches a little bitches.
- 45:13Speaker 1: Yeah that. But what's great about that is that just
- 45:18Speaker 1: recently came about. We're working on the shows for years.
- 45:21Speaker 1: That was like, yeah, it was like a twenty nineteen
- 45:23Speaker 1: or twenty official. The next day, I know, I called Annie,
- 45:32Speaker 1: I texted I was like, any I don't know if
- 45:34Speaker 1: you're an HR person. I need to talk to you.
- 45:36Speaker 1: But well, what's great is we've made it through years
- 45:40Speaker 1: of doing the show and then the moniker comes out.
- 45:45Speaker 1: It's like I can see right off the bat being
- 45:47Speaker 1: like you know what you're you know, well, there's been something,
- 45:51Speaker 1: there's iterations of, like the crew has changed over the
- 45:55Speaker 1: course of time that I think we've all been working
- 45:58Speaker 1: on it. Yanni was on it for like most of
- 46:01Speaker 1: I think still you're probably on it longer than anybody.
- 46:04Speaker 1: Never never became a bit. I want to know. I'm
- 46:13Speaker 1: gonna I'm gonna point this question at you. Is it
- 46:15Speaker 1: bitch woke? Now? Oh? You don't say no, you don't.
- 46:22Speaker 1: It's kind of come back around it like a few
- 46:24Speaker 1: years ago fashion. I think they're claiming people are taking
- 46:27Speaker 1: it back, like bitch is fine, Oh it is fine again.
- 46:30Speaker 1: I think so, I think that someone's a sensibility call me.
- 46:33Speaker 1: If it's sensibilities that someone just wants to see you bleed,
- 46:36Speaker 1: they're going to get mad about it. Yeah, but like,
- 46:40Speaker 1: what what use of the word bitch, like bitch please,
- 46:43Speaker 1: or like calling someone a bit? That's what I think
- 46:47Speaker 1: is that anymore people don't really call females. But we
- 46:53Speaker 1: have a funny story about this from the other day
- 46:55Speaker 1: we do. We're doing our cookbook photo shoot and two
- 46:59Speaker 1: women that we were with are driving too fast down
- 47:02Speaker 1: this road and an old man comes out and yells
- 47:06Speaker 1: at him. And then they then spent the next thirty
- 47:09Speaker 1: minutes trying to figure out did he say slow down
- 47:12Speaker 1: a bit, as one of them thought, or did he
- 47:15Speaker 1: say slow down a little bit? Very different said that said,
- 47:22Speaker 1: what answer your question? I guess I can't keep up.
- 47:29Speaker 1: I don't I have no idea, but I just I
- 47:31Speaker 1: find it interesting that the the interpretation of a word,
- 47:37Speaker 1: or like how someone perceives it when called it or
- 47:40Speaker 1: when they hear it, just changes with like the weather.
- 47:45Speaker 1: It's just it's silly to me. But I said, now
- 47:49Speaker 1: you're just weak, the bitchiest of bitches. I'm guessing you
- 47:54Speaker 1: didn't want to hike anymore. It was probably something practical
- 47:59Speaker 1: and sable. The reason the whole you know that we're there. Wait,
- 48:10Speaker 1: you want to focus on something in important? Yeah, you
- 48:13Speaker 1: don't want to go on a midnight death march back
- 48:15Speaker 1: to camp. I'll set up. But saying I view the relationship,
- 48:22Speaker 1: I view that there's there's a push and pull. Right, Um,
- 48:29Speaker 1: you guys want your desire to film things sometimes prevents
- 48:36Speaker 1: there being anything to film. Yes, you're not. You're not
- 48:40Speaker 1: incorrect on that, and so I'm like, do it my
- 48:44Speaker 1: way and I'll show you something cool to film. But
- 48:46Speaker 1: that's an infliction that I think we have on everything
- 48:48Speaker 1: that we work on. That's something that I at least
- 48:51Speaker 1: I'm always like, oh, we gotta do it this way.
- 48:53Speaker 1: And then it's like, my wife's a director too, and
- 48:55Speaker 1: we get into a healthy conversation. It's about things. Yeah,
- 49:00Speaker 1: that's why your wife, even though she's never shot a
- 49:03Speaker 1: television show, she or a hunting show, she's still probably
- 49:06Speaker 1: be like, oh yeah, those fucking cameras. No. She if
- 49:09Speaker 1: I like tell a story and it's like, oh this
- 49:10Speaker 1: is crazy, she like will usually side not with me
- 49:13Speaker 1: because she knows that. It's like because if you're not
- 49:15Speaker 1: getting the story, if you're only getting the images, and
- 49:17Speaker 1: it's like you don't have this. This is something that
- 49:19Speaker 1: any documentary film is going to run into the problem
- 49:23Speaker 1: of filming. It is preventing the thing you're doing. Hunting
- 49:28Speaker 1: just is more so you add all these people to
- 49:31Speaker 1: the woods, you're trying to be stealthy. It's like incompatible.
- 49:35Speaker 1: But I've been talking about this a lot lately, like
- 49:38Speaker 1: that Meat Eater is actually the like the only true
- 49:44Speaker 1: Verte show that I work on now. Verte is like
- 49:48Speaker 1: you as a camera person, are capturing events as they
- 49:53Speaker 1: are unfolding in front of you. It's like just very
- 49:55Speaker 1: honest on the fly on the wall. Yeah, it's like
- 49:59Speaker 1: you're just in French term that was related to just
- 50:02Speaker 1: capturing truth. Yeah, but I think we keep that in
- 50:06Speaker 1: mind to not prevent the success. Very like that's why
- 50:10Speaker 1: it's fun to work on this show because it's like
- 50:12Speaker 1: nobody does that, and it's always like, oh, we gotta
- 50:14Speaker 1: set up and we're going to this place and we're
- 50:16Speaker 1: gonna light it and we're gonna do this, and it's
- 50:17Speaker 1: just like okay. But there's a thing like people want
- 50:19Speaker 1: to see Steve's face, but we're constantly hiking behind him.
- 50:23Speaker 1: We see his ass the whole time, and as much
- 50:25Speaker 1: as you the authenticity of the moment is to see
- 50:28Speaker 1: him from behind, because how would a camera guy be
- 50:30Speaker 1: out in front of him needs to see your face.
- 50:35Speaker 1: It's just like it's what people, It's just one of
- 50:39Speaker 1: those things. And so we have to find those moments
- 50:42Speaker 1: where Steve lets us run ahead. Dude, I've been yelled
- 50:47Speaker 1: at for that. And so you can decide to air
- 50:51Speaker 1: on the side of getting less coverage and not having
- 50:55Speaker 1: Steve yelled at you, or pick pick your moment. But
- 50:58Speaker 1: sometimes you pick your moment and it's not the moment.
- 51:00Speaker 1: But every year we get emails from guy being like,
- 51:02Speaker 1: you don't have that, you don't have you don't have this,
- 51:04Speaker 1: And I'm like, guys, the main editor there's edited over
- 51:07Speaker 1: a hundred episodes of the show, and yeah, if you
- 51:10Speaker 1: guys don't get the coverage from the front, you will
- 51:12Speaker 1: get yelled at him. Yeah to two. And and when
- 51:18Speaker 1: an editor is going through our footage often I'm sure
- 51:20Speaker 1: they're like, what the funk were these guys are doing
- 51:22Speaker 1: out there, because it just seems like they didn't do
- 51:25Speaker 1: this and they didn't do that, you know, like all
- 51:27Speaker 1: the basic things that you do and you know, documentary film,
- 51:31Speaker 1: but we're just under a different constraint, even just just
- 51:35Speaker 1: the walking, Like it's easy to look at something and
- 51:37Speaker 1: be like that doesn't look that hard or whatever, Like
- 51:39Speaker 1: most of Alaska just you the walking and filming at
- 51:42Speaker 1: the same time. It's just like an incompatible situation. You know,
- 51:46Speaker 1: it's all shaky and you're like, yeah, you got camp
- 51:49Speaker 1: on your back, you camp on your back, you're hunting.
- 51:52Speaker 1: It doesn't come out in conversation, but I respect and
- 51:55Speaker 1: understand what you guys need to do, and I uh,
- 52:00Speaker 1: I could turn it right around and like give your
- 52:02Speaker 1: side of the story, you know, and I honestly view
- 52:07Speaker 1: it as I honestly view it as a UM team.
- 52:12Speaker 1: Yeah that there's that there's a push and pull going on.
- 52:17Speaker 1: You know, if I was always if I always won
- 52:20Speaker 1: all that stuff, it would be to the detriment. Like likewise,
- 52:24Speaker 1: if the reason the show is good is because we
- 52:27Speaker 1: can't enforce our will on the production, because then it
- 52:31Speaker 1: just be like like, yeah, there's shows out there, like
- 52:35Speaker 1: there a lot of a lot of fakery, like authenticity.
- 52:38Speaker 1: People use that word all the time. We want authentic
- 52:40Speaker 1: media or we want to like and they're so full
- 52:43Speaker 1: of ship. They don't want they don't want that. They
- 52:44Speaker 1: just want to, uh write a script like block it out,
- 52:49Speaker 1: like shoot this shoot that television production is based on. UM.
- 52:54Speaker 1: You have a specific amount of money, specific time in
- 52:56Speaker 1: the field, and so you guarantee what's going to happen,
- 52:59Speaker 1: and the fact that we're hunting, there's no guarantee of anything.
- 53:03Speaker 1: That's why all these hunts end with you know, quote
- 53:06Speaker 1: unquote failure or the eleventh hour or the eleventh hour
- 53:10Speaker 1: because you're actually doing it. But the filmmaker part of
- 53:14Speaker 1: me is like, I gotta try to control as much
- 53:16Speaker 1: as I can to make sure we have these the
- 53:19Speaker 1: start of a scene or the end of a scene
- 53:21Speaker 1: or like but you know, and Yanni was good, Yeah,
- 53:25Speaker 1: but like a little a little a little SoundBite that
- 53:27Speaker 1: closes a moment, you know, like put a button on that. Yeah,
- 53:32Speaker 1: So there's like some you're doing TV all the while
- 53:35Speaker 1: you're just at the whim of chaos. Yeah. Yeah, it's
- 53:40Speaker 1: unlike most other productions, like the you guys already said,
- 53:43Speaker 1: you know, you just you don't have all those components
- 53:45Speaker 1: that you would normally have on every other show that
- 53:47Speaker 1: we've worked on. You have fly on the wall, and
- 53:50Speaker 1: then you've got to figure out how to make sure
- 53:52Speaker 1: you're camera batteries don't run out and your tapes don't
- 53:56Speaker 1: run out, media doesn't run out. I guess tapes is
- 53:58Speaker 1: a little aniquated at this point, but ah, same thing.
- 54:03Speaker 1: So it's different in that respect. In that regard, it's
- 54:06Speaker 1: different than every other hunting show or even television production
- 54:10Speaker 1: show worked on. Well, there's always you know, there's like
- 54:14Speaker 1: minutes a day. Wow, I don't know. I want to
- 54:15Speaker 1: talk about other shows. There's other shows out there that
- 54:18Speaker 1: are like pretty tough. But I'm always like, how hard
- 54:21Speaker 1: are they really? Are they that? Are they that hard?
- 54:23Speaker 1: Because like, we're doing some pretty hard stuff. There's some
- 54:25Speaker 1: hard stuff that people do, but meter's pretty You're you're
- 54:30Speaker 1: juggling a lot. You're juggling a lot. That sounds like
- 54:33Speaker 1: you guys should get paid more. Oh buddy, well inflation
- 54:36Speaker 1: is up man. Yeah, I mean, I don't know what.
- 54:39Speaker 1: Just like those contractors out there, everybody's in demand. But
- 54:42Speaker 1: what do you guys? Explain the economics? Like, not the
- 54:44Speaker 1: economics with exact numbers, but explain how one lives as
- 54:50Speaker 1: a freelance camera operator. Well the coin your term. We're
- 54:53Speaker 1: all free trappers in this room. I think there's like, no,
- 54:57Speaker 1: there's no staff like film or just film is right
- 55:00Speaker 1: for me? Neater staff south staff Yeah, yeah, but we
- 55:04Speaker 1: know we don't have any we don't have any staff,
- 55:07Speaker 1: just camera people. But in a lot of ways, being
- 55:09Speaker 1: a camera operator or director of photography, is your an
- 55:12Speaker 1: independent contractor your work for higher You make a day rate,
- 55:17Speaker 1: and the day rates pretty standard yep. In terms of
- 55:21Speaker 1: like nonfiction TV, there's like kind of like a there's
- 55:24Speaker 1: like a threshold of low to high and it kind
- 55:27Speaker 1: of operates within like a window of that and uh,
- 55:31Speaker 1: you something, you can bring your own tools and rent
- 55:34Speaker 1: your tools to the production camera or other equipment to
- 55:38Speaker 1: kind of like bump your day rate. Yeah, you're in
- 55:41Speaker 1: that biz right to have my own gear. Yeah, depending
- 55:43Speaker 1: depending on the production, which is nice because then you
- 55:45Speaker 1: can work for less because your people are happier to
- 55:49Speaker 1: pay for equipment than they are labor. Dude, people don't
- 55:52Speaker 1: like paying. I'm always like, why are we paying like
- 55:53Speaker 1: a robot man? Give me yeah, But they're like they're like,
- 55:57Speaker 1: oh no, they like they like negoti you're rate. But
- 56:00Speaker 1: then you're like and I'm gonna bring some gear and
- 56:02Speaker 1: they're like, oh, yeah, whatever it is. I don't know
- 56:06Speaker 1: if it's like a part of capitalism or they're like, yeah,
- 56:11Speaker 1: they want to argue about your value more than the
- 56:13Speaker 1: value of having your camera there. Yeah, we'll find another
- 56:16Speaker 1: guy and just will rent your No, I mean it's
- 56:22Speaker 1: it is a funny. It's a funny economy in the
- 56:24Speaker 1: sense that you know, the the UK is the biggest
- 56:27Speaker 1: probably nonfiction industry. Yeah, like because until Attenborough dies, and
- 56:34Speaker 1: I think it's gonna dry up Attenburgh anymore. To be
- 56:38Speaker 1: like who can do his accents? Some would be like, oh,
- 56:41Speaker 1: look a whale state stay funded. Phil, you can't do it. Yea,
- 56:51Speaker 1: my voice isn't I'm not doing it. Yeah, what's even
- 56:56Speaker 1: sound like? Like he's got like he's like very formal,
- 56:58Speaker 1: he's like he has a very still like Stilton, and
- 57:03Speaker 1: he's developed the minimalist style over the years. Now he'll
- 57:06Speaker 1: just come in and be like Wales I think just
- 57:13Speaker 1: gets war out. Yeah, he likes a little punchy little things.
- 57:16Speaker 1: You know that that whole busical when he died. But
- 57:20Speaker 1: Brits economies funded. But you know they have socialized system
- 57:24Speaker 1: where they didn't probably have you know, six six figure
- 57:28Speaker 1: uh student loans or whatnot. So like the the US,
- 57:32Speaker 1: like we don't have healthcare. All these things add up,
- 57:35Speaker 1: so our rates are generally, like a US camera man's
- 57:37Speaker 1: rates are higher than because you're talking about Yeah it's freelancers.
- 57:39Speaker 1: We don't have benefits. Yeah, we have to pay retirement. Yeah,
- 57:42Speaker 1: like all that stuff. When people are like, what are
- 57:44Speaker 1: you doing for what do the Brits have? They just
- 57:46Speaker 1: have They're not being in healthcare. They get paid a
- 57:49Speaker 1: lower day rate. We get paid on the government pays
- 57:51Speaker 1: them for everything else they have in Canada to Costana
- 57:54Speaker 1: has healthcare. So us camera people, we got that edge
- 57:58Speaker 1: to us man, Yeah, man, you gotta really scrap, you
- 58:00Speaker 1: really take the cloths off and go ahut. That's what
- 58:03Speaker 1: I was telling. Uh. I was arguing with Jay Sevens
- 58:08Speaker 1: about Canada, and I was saying, you know, you guys
- 58:10Speaker 1: don't have that What I was gonna say, you guys
- 58:14Speaker 1: don't have that edge. You know, they're just comfortable. The
- 58:19Speaker 1: fact that the show he finished my sentence for me,
- 58:21Speaker 1: he finished my setens for I said, you guys don't
- 58:24Speaker 1: have that mindless ferocity. No. The fact that the show
- 58:31Speaker 1: happened during the pandemic, like we were in production. Dude,
- 58:35Speaker 1: if it wasn't for Mediator, I'd been like, yeah, you
- 58:37Speaker 1: had to go on unemployment during that because I had
- 58:39Speaker 1: no No, I mean, dude, our industry shut down, everybody did.
- 58:42Speaker 1: But the fact that we had that season production when
- 58:45Speaker 1: everybody else was Oh dude, we were working. Yeah, we
- 58:48Speaker 1: were working. I loved it. It was great man. We
- 58:51Speaker 1: were up in Alaska cabin in Pennsylvania. Yeah, that was
- 58:56Speaker 1: where we all got to see. We worked all through
- 58:58Speaker 1: the pandemic and um and uh. I still can't get
- 59:02Speaker 1: the governor of Florida to come on the podcast. You're
- 59:04Speaker 1: trying to get into Santis on here. Yeah, he'd love
- 59:07Speaker 1: it if you heard that. Why wouldn't Why did we busted?
- 59:09Speaker 1: Asked through the pandemic? You think keep doing here right now?
- 59:12Speaker 1: Gave each other COVID. It sounds like he loves He
- 59:18Speaker 1: won't come out. I don't know. He was erman. I
- 59:21Speaker 1: want to talk to Hi about the Everglades. Oh yeah,
- 59:23Speaker 1: he's passed some they've passed some good conation. I gotta
- 59:28Speaker 1: get on that again. Please come on, Ron. Yeah well hell,
- 59:32Speaker 1: I mean they were pretty busy the last month on that.
- 59:35Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, No, I'd probably less likely to happen now,
- 59:38Speaker 1: But I want to talk about the Everglades and sort
- 59:40Speaker 1: of like the politics of the Everglades in Florida. But
- 59:44Speaker 1: the antagonistic relationship that the crew and Steve have to
- 59:48Speaker 1: have it is what makes the show good. If if
- 59:51Speaker 1: if Steve gave us everything we requested, the show would
- 59:54Speaker 1: be bad. It wouldn't be some actual ones like I
- 59:59Speaker 1: don't know, I got an early one that actually is
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: beneficial for us, and you, Steve, that makes me look good.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: It's in Mexico on that trip you're talking the first one.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: I remember, I was, I was very new to me eater,
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: but understood if you didn't film and it didn't happen.
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: And I was on the long lens at that point.
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: Then we're Cou's deer hunting, and remember you were talking
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: about I think Rick and Chris were doing the cross
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: coverage eyes on long lens and you were talking about
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: a deer. So I was getting into position to try
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: to shoot video of the deer and you snapped at me. Sure, yeah,
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: but I was being because I grew up hunting, so
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: I knew, like, you know, I don't want to spook
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: this thing that is the subject matter. And so after
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: after you know, you kind of snapped at me, I said,
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: you know, if I don't film it, it doesn't make sense,
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: and like this this scene won't make it, and you
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: you like you greet and you're like, okay, just be
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: you know, just be careful, be quiet. Ye got in
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: a fight recently, and I think you said, he snapped back,
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: like we've done this before. Steve said, this is my
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: fiftie episode. Bro. Yeah, oh dude, I did not say
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: that you the moose was. I was a little frustrated. Yeah,
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: I was. I was more responding to being offended that
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: you didn't think I had the savviness not to spook
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: the moose and you were this Alaska moose just happened.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: Alaska moose. We got, We like had a bowl. We
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: took his temperature. He looked interested. Yeah, and he wasn't.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: But for a minute he looked interested, and I just
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: wanted I wanted us in case he came. Yeah, I
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: wanted lockdown and I was not in lockdown mode yet.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: I was like a couple of seconds for this is
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: the other thing related to that. We film everybody that's
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: on camera settle into position, get quiet. Oh thank you. Yeah,
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: we were. We have a packs on people decided to
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: sit down, be quiet. When we go to do the
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: same thing they just did thirty seconds before we did,
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: we get yelled at it and then we have to
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: sit down otherwise. Goddamn it. Yeah, you guys just rustled,
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: took off your jacket all this ship. Dude, I've gotten
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: so good at that, and that's what I'm settled. Yeah,
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: they don't want over the ridge. I want to. I
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: want to slip over the ridge and just settle. Yeah,
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: so I slip over. I take my backpack off, put
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: on some layers whatever, get ready to snacks out. And
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: also I hear noise behind me and it makes me
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: want to kill people. And also it's like russelling. It's
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: like then there are times where it's like Okay, you
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: get into position and you settle, and it's like okay,
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: we're glassing. But then you're like really hungry and you're like,
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: I know, I got some dry mangoes in my bag,
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: but they're in like the loudest cella yea. I try
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: to get silent at it, but it's tough. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: But that was the situation on Moose. I think we
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: had filmed you guys seeing it, and then I was
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: getting in a position to cross shoes and then I
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: was I was locked in. But yeah, that was the fight.
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: That was all the equipment is loud, all of it,
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: everything everything we have. You can't just get the shot
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: by being silent. You gotta you gotta make noise, you
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: gotta move around. There's also like physics involved in our job,
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: and I don't know if it's physics, it's geometry, thanks
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: rick Um. It's like, we have to be in a
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: position where we can see things that are happening and
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: see people's faces and then but we also need to
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: be in like a correlated position with the other camera
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: person so that when you're in the when you're editing it,
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: everything cuts together. Well, because if you don't observe this
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: thing called eighty degree rule, you when you cut two
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: images together, it looks like the people are looking different directions.
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: It doesn't look like they're talking to each other on camera.
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: It's like, well, I think the way we explain it
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: was the line where I had you punch one direction
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: and then I flipped across the line and had you
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: punch again, and your punches are going different directions, screen directions.
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: Remember that in Turkey, Uh, not in Turkey, but filming
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: Turkey in South Carolina. And this was part of the
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: argument about why you guys move around so much. Yeah, well,
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: and it's especially true when the talent comes on and
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: has no idea what blocking is or as ever, because
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: you guys dance around constantly, you're constantly moving around looking
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: at things, shifting and then a guy switched places and
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: we have to switch places. So it's just a constant thing.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: We're looking at each other's eyes. What are you on?
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: What are you on? They moved, Oh my god, we
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: have to move to you're shooting across the line or
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: something not. And the editors sometimes will say, oh, don't
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: worry about that, and then yeah, it's usually and I
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: it's like the direction that the character on the screen
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: is looking, and so we're just we're just aware of
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: that in a way that it's called vector line, right,
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: it's a three line. Can you just explain that for
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: like a viewer watching, it's like you're watching Steve face
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: to the right of the screen and looked to the
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: right at some distant critter he's just like caught sight of.
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: And then something else happens and then you need to
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: avoid that the next shot is suddenly that you are
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: in a different place as a camera guy in relation
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: to Steve, and Steve is now facing to the left
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: of the screen. Because then as a viewer, you have
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: no idea what's going on. I mean, just after like
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: hundreds of years of theater and television and film, our
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: brains are kind of subconsciously trained to to watch movies
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: and in a certain way. And when that one eighty
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: line or like what you gets talking about is broken,
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: like what Crimson cameraman is all of a sudden behind
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: Steve when he was in front you're it kind of
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: messes with how your brain is like visualizing like the
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: geometry of the scene, and then it's subconsciously kind of
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: throws you off. The editor can can flip an image,
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: but people don't. It looks weird. Your face looks all weird. Yeah,
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: it doesn't like a weird mirror. So but it happens
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: that that's the most important in conversation because if it's
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: just you doing action on your own, Steve cooking something,
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: you can always go to that close up shot, go
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: right back to him, and if it's a different it
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: might be somewhat jarring, but as long as you pop
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: to a different shot, it's not as jarring. Here's one
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: thing I like you guys to explain that I've been
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: trying to prod at recently, and I don't get it
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: we'll film all manners stuff all the time where there's
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: no control over what's going on. Okay, just zero control.
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: There's nothing you can do about light, there's nothing to
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: do about rain, there's nothing to do about where an
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: animal comes from, when it comes, who says, what, who
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: does what, someone misses, hits whatever. I know where you're going.
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: Then all of a sudden, something will happen, and you
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: guys act like you guys act like there's a thousand
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: variables that you now need to control. Why is this scenes?
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: It's mostly the meal scenes. I feel like we're like,
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about something that we kind of know
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about. Yeah, if you're just setting up
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: like a dialogue beat and we're so like, okay, we
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: gotta explain what's going on. So and then all of
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: a sudden, where was all this for the rest of
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: the undered hours of stuff you guys filmed. Because there's
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: a thing I think it's like we can work in
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: those environments where there is no control and you kind
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: of like our our brains kind of just be like, Okay,
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: don't worry about the fact that, like the light is
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: terrible right now, because there's no, you cannot have control.
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: But as soon as you let like a little crack
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: of control can come in, it's just like we'll just
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: grab at it and then we'll just start talking food,
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: food and green light. Nobody wants to eat that food. So, yeah,
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: certain foods on a headlamp, like doesn't look great. It
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: just doesn't look appetizing. You know, there's these conventions of
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: how people have gotten used to looking at food and
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: if it looks bad, it's gonna taste bad. Nobody can
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: taste the food. If it looks good, it's gonna taste good.
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: It's just like it's a visual medium. Nobody can smell
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: the smells or whatever. So if it all has like
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: a greenish tint to it, like under some fluorescent light,
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: maybe the experiences that's the actual experience of where you
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: guys are eating. That doesn't work for TV. Let's say
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: it's too Yeah to that point, and so this is
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: going to be a stretch because I'm spit balling. But
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: as a hunter, you go out preseason, you go scout,
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: you take your time, you do you know, you do
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: everything you kind of can pre pre actual hunt. You
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: go site in your rifle. You know, maybe at a
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: shooting range with a bench and a target in place,
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: so you're putting all this time into that that part
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: of the hunt. And then when you're out in the
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: field and you know there's there's a game coming over
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: the ridge and you're in a weird spot to shoot,
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: but you still like that's that's happening real time. There's
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: no arguing with it. Yeah, you just have to you
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: have to do what you can do. And that's kind
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: of the same. If we do have the chance to
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: like make something look good, to tell the story better,
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: we're gonna we're gonna put in that effort, whereas those
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: other times we just you can't. You kind of just
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: wallow the pill. Jared Andrew Cannis, who's a producer over
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: at zero point zero, he told me early on in
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: my producer career that there's only two scenes that you
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: can really control. When you go out and do make
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: a meat eater, and that's the intro of the show,
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: and then the meal scene, which is usually our outro,
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: and everything in the middle you're just gonna have to,
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: you know, roll the dice and spray and pray and
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: get the best you can spray and praise not true
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: these guys aren't praying usually when they shoot, but you
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: know what I mean, those are the two times though,
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: and when you can slow down a little bit and
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: just make sure you really nail it and to give
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: two nice bookends to an episode, dude. And there is
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: no worse feeling. I mean, there's probably worse feelings, but
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: it's it is so brutal to be like looking at
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: your monitor and looking at just like a potato and
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: I'd say potato, not like a real like just like
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: a real dogshit frame and you're just like, oh my god,
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: it's it's torture. It's to you're just like looking at
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: it and you're just like, I know what I need
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: to do to make this not look good, but we can't.
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: And I'm just like a buddy, this is hard. That's
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: a hard pill to swallow. That's one of the other
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: camera man has an acronym for that. It's called nimming.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: Tyler Emmett is one of the other camera guys. Is
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: not here, but uh, what are you doing over there? Tyler?
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: He's like, oh, nimmon, what do you what do you mean? Nimmon?
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: Not in movie. I'm shooting something that will not be
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: let me ask you guys nother question. Uh. I'll start
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: out with set a scene for you. You know what
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: you go to when you're at home depot or someplace
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: like that, and someone wants a product that's up on
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: the high shelf and they got six people. They've got
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: people with flags, he's got orange vests. The guy buckled
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: into the scissor lift was buckled into the fork lift,
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: and you know, there's a siren going off and he's
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: gonna like extract a grill from the up left, you know,
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: and it looks like they're, you know, getting ready to
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: arm a nuclear warhead. With the amount of staff and
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: safety pro safety protocol, they shut down that whole quadit
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: accordion metal fence up. Yeah. Man, okay, Uh, you don't
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: work in that environment, not regularly. So how what's your attitude? Uh?
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: What are your attitudes with risk? Because there's like pretty
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: real risk about injury. Yeah. Well, like we were talking
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: about my attitude change because we had that goat hunt
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: and I'm not I'm not ashamed to say it, but
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: we got into a spot where we were like crampons.
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: This was the Mountain goat hunt, Like to when was that?
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: Was it last year might be in Yeah, I think
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: it was season ten. Yeah. We got into a spot
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: where you took a shot at that goat and we've
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: been hiking all day and uh we got we were
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: like in an avalanche shot where it was like I
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: don't know how how big was that she from like
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: where we were scrambling around to like the bottom which
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: was just like giant down timber that was like thousand
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: I mean that whole drainage was probably but if you
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: took a slip and rolled the hill down, how deep? Yeah,
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: So I was that to me, I felt the dead
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: but like a mess. You'd be real banged up. And
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: that was I think that was the only time I
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: bailed on a stock. I was like, I didn't. I
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: just was not feeling it that day and not used
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: to cramp. Yeah, cramp on and so I calculate risk
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: and more now than I did. But when we were
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: in grizzly country, we slept on this hon I just
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: did with Yanni. Yannie was the only dude sleeping outside
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: of the bear fence. That bear fence is only for
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: your mind, dude. I kind of looked down on you
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: for him. The picture of that bear that they put
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: on that bear fence is just like there's no I
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: thought you had it for keeping your caribou meat safe. No,
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: when they yeah, we around, it's like he just don't.
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: But I mean like I wasn't really thinking about risk.
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: I'm not really thinking about it in that environment. It's
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: like more like if I have control, I don't know.
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: It's hard to explain. I mean, you guys did get
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: attacked by a grizzly bear. Yeah, we got charged by
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: a grizzly bear. Yeah, that story has been That story
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: has been told. You know what me and Chris were
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: talking about. That's a shame on that. On the fog
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: Knack trip, the fishing was freaking amazing, and I always
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: forget to like think of talk about what you think
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: about that. Oh, you guys get some gravy. It's because
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: you wrote a grizzlyberger kind of Yeah, you guys get
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: some amazing opportunities. Oh dude, that's more messages being like
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: thanks for the amazing fishing. Don't you have to pay
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: for my own healthcare? But know that that shoe we
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: did up at the fish shack, that was like during
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: like Pete COVID deal. That was like July. That was
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: where we went up fishing and there was a moment
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: where we're on the boat. We were like tethered to Steven.
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: Janni were on camera and we were tethered to your
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: guys boat and if you guys hooked up, we'd quickly
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: like pull the line on our bow to get up
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: to your boat to film it. And then that was
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: like kind of like we were dicking around a lot,
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: and then there was a moment you're like, all right,
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: we're gonna fish, We're gonna film, and we're like that
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: trip was amazing. Man, that was a good trip. So
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: that was the one where I where I feel like
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: I did not hit the mark as the producer because
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: the show there was Steve teaching you guys all how
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: to fish. I felt like we did like I don't
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: want to say lackluster, but it wasn't our best performance.
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: We pulled a great episode out of that, but that
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: was that was also the happiest I've ever seen that
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: how many having a baby get married? The black hats
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: number one, You're pretty stoked on that moose this last
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: trip or two ago. I was not like that black
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: cod though, dude, that black hot I mean it was.
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: It was funny that you were that it worked up
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: about it, because like the process of doing that is
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: so underwhelming, and it's so like there's a PostScript to that. Yeah,
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: I thought it was going to be um, oh yes,
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: I mean visually I thought learning how to catch black
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: cod I thought it was going to be very very
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: hard to get good at it. Right then we caught
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: one right away, and I was happy because it turned
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: out that it wasn't gonna be very hard to learn
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: how to do it, and it has been nothing but
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: downhill from there. Really, it's, in fact, turned out to
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: be harder than I ever thought it was. And you
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: caught me at a moment of false symptimism that was
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: like a total fluke beginner's luck, total fluke. Whoa fluke? No,
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: I haven't heard that. Whoa, I didn't know that. That
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: makes it even better. Every time I go, I get
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: worse at it. Really, So I was like, this is
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: gonna be a decade long process, right to learn how
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: to deep drop black out. And I'm like, oh, I
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: thought I was gonna have to spend ten years trying
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: to figure this out. Here it is, well, yeah, you're
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: getting ready to make a new show called Drop Boys.
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: So we're gonna travel the world to the deepest places
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: and drop that electric rod down. See if we catch
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: de drop Boys. I think they're still Yeah, there's still
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: a market for that. Yeah, I wouldn't abandon that, Garrett,
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: tell me, what's the prettiest scene that you shot in
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: season eleven? Man, remind me of what those would have been.
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: The season to the next is like so arbitrary because
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: notes com prepared. I mean I only worked on one
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: episode and season eleven, so it's easy for me to think, Okay,
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: well in uh in uh the tur turkey, Yeah, walking
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: through those stands of ponderosa up high to that place
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: with like really tall grass and the like the light
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: on the grass in the mornings in the evening, Steve
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: walking through it slow motion. Man, we had different trips
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: on that, different experiences much totally. You suffered way more
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: than I did. It was beautiful though, Yeah, but that's
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: pretty stuff. And the and when you got your turkey, Steve.
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: I think that stuff made the show real. Pretty back
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: lit area we were in first, that was a wilderness
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: area before they had wilderness areas, so they made the HeLa.
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: They had some other name for it. Eldo Leopold advocated
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: for it. They made the HeLa. They didn't have the right.
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: They came here. What they called it. They made it
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: a wilderness. It was the Forest Services only area that
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: had that level of protection. Then later when they passed
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: the Wilderness Act, they rolled the helo was the first
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: thing they rolled into it. So we were doing a
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: thing about the helo and the way fire shapes the landscape,
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: and uh, yeah, it was a beautiful place. I mean
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: I think, yeah, like every place we go. I mean
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: not every place, because there's sometimes we'd every place because
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: you were always The cool thing about this show is
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: like we're always up and out before the sunrise typically,
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: and so you get to go and like very remote
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: places and see it and experience it at like the
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: best times because you're usually out after sunset because you're
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: hunting till last light and you're up before first light,
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: and you're just seeing like the most like I've seen
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: the most amazing ship working on this show, like landscapes
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: and nature and just things that we observe that I
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: even like personally, it's still like don't go out and
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: go as hard as we do on on the show,
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: So it's like always a real treat to go see
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: something like even the first one that stretch up in
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: BC was like, dude, there was like that day where
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: the kind of the clouds broke and it was kind
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: of like that that spin drip. Oh and in the
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: on the Goat Hunt when we had that crazy oh
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: my god, God shining down the craziest thing I've ever
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: seen in my life. It's like stunning. I'm goose bumps.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: There's so many like you're saying, yeah, you just see
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: like really amazing, amazing stuff. I don't know if we
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: capture it to the level that we're experiencing, and I
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: hope we do, but we try. It almost leaves you
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: with a feeling of failure a little bit. And when
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: you see stuff like that, you're just like, dude, that's
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: all like pretty beautiful places and things, landscapes. What about
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: like a scene where you caught that veritate moment of
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: a human having having an emotional experience or having experiencing
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: you were there to capture it. I got I got
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: one Based on Season eleven, for sure. I think about
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: a lot is when when you and Evan when he
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: ended up, you know, you guys were in position and
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: he shot that blacktail. The elation in like like uh,
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: the celebration was like so cool, and I think we
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: got that. You guys like can brace in and being
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: like man, we just kept putting it, you know, putting
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: the coals to the fire and it paid off just that,
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: like unhindered joy. That was cool. Yeah, similar in the
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: in the Moose experience to it when Clay laid that
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: thing down. I mean, you guys were hugging and high
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: five and it was crazy in the moment. You know,
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: like we'll see how it all ends up in the edit,
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: but I mean that was definitely high in that hunt.
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: It sounds cliche to say it, but I yeah, I
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: just it's it's like it's just getting to it's probably
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: it's like a thing of aging, I guess, but it's
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: just fun to watch people get stuff. Man, that it's
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: fun to watch people get stuff, especially after you've worked
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: all that time where we thought we were done. You know,
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: we thought after nine and a half days, we're going
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: on for an afternoon, let's glass on the place where
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: we haven't seen any moose. And it comes together. I
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: mean that is next level. Those are the best man,
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: because that's said, yeah, where you get like the best emotion.
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: And so I think like outside of the success or
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: failure ultimately, like you're and too, I'd like to think
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: of us as production crew. We're all in good enough shape.
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: Like there's not a ton of struggle in the field,
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: like visually, like that would be another kind of cool
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: thing if you were like all disheveled and tired and
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: like no no, yeah, so there's not really like an
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: emotion in that and the like lead up process. Oh yeah,
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: if you if I could produce that for season twelve, Yeah,
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: Steve on some skis out there, some more dirt on
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: his face. We gotta put more dirt on his face.
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: Two kept together, so that just like cruising. I mean
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: even even back to the the episode one of season eleven,
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: I mean that was brutal, but I don't think it
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: seeing it. I don't know what part of the cut
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: I saw off it was the final, But it doesn't
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: the suffrage. It doesn't read because you guys are just
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: kept together kind of and you're watching a week turned
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: into twenty two minutes exactly with a lot of So
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: if you just took the twenty two minute or whatever
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: the hell Now we don't you know, we're not like
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: wed to the twenty two minute things much. But if
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: you just took it and made it like people hiking
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: through the rain for twenty two minutes, make it look
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: you get the right dismal feeling. But how much can
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: you really devote to it. It's like you can't capture
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: it's it's really hard to capture. How much time is
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: spent on a glass and knob, yeah, because because I edit, Yeah, yeah,
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: I mean, you spend like four days on some glass
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: and tit. How much is that actually? How much of
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: the show does it actually make? You know? I attempted
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: to do that in the last gay. I took a
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: time lapse of you sitting there glassing, which will not
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: make it obviously with people in them laps people time
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: lapses of any vertebrate except migrating caribou were okay, oh yeah.
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: I thought maybe if it was you, just you by yourself,
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: maybe they're But I don't think that's because it's because
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: of the subject matter, because I feel the same way
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: it looks weird about whether it's a human or a
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: tree blowing in the wind, and time laps, it just
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: shakes in the frame, and it's one of the ugliest
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: things you could put on television. H you need the end,
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: you need to slow that shutter, telling the story of
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: how long you were sitting there. That's the only reason
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: I took that shot because it definitely paints a picture
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: of how long during that nine days we sat there
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: and not didn't move just a class. There's things that
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: I think that there's things people work on where it's
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: not hard, but they they're making it seem There's like
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: media products, products where they're trying to make something seem
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: hard that's not yeah, And I think one of the
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: frustrations of working on stuff is that, um, there's stuff
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: that you watch later and you're like, why can't you can't?
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: Like why can't you? And this is no, this isn't
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: the too. In saying this, it's not to criticize the coverage,
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: it's just why can't you capture certain amounts of annoyance?
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: You know, like being just in very high wind? What
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: what being in very high wind for five or six
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: days feels like you can't get there, you can't feel
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: what it feels like just to wake up and be like, oh,
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: I'm gonna go and try to find the fortitude to
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: sit on this to sit on this hill and watch
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: the valley blow, despite all indicators that nothing is gonna happen,
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: that you'll go do that and there's an experience you're living. Um,
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: you just can't you can't get to it because because
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: of the of the time limit. It's what kind of
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: makes that stuff interesting. We've joked about it is that
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: stuff they're into in Northern Europe, right, isn't Northern Europe?
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: They're big into it. Where you just watched like a
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: fire slow TV TV. Yeah, oh yeah, I mean I'm
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: into that. You're in slow TV train? What do you
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: watch on slow TV? Yeah? He was like a train
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: going through like the Alps or something for three hours.
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: You know, you could drone like like just long drone
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: footage going over like cities, canyons slow TV. I think
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: so I like that because that's what our that's what
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: our TV goes to you when you're not doing anything.
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: It's like shots shorelines or drone shots of mountaintops, or
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: just like underwater as though like you know, you were
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: free diving or you had a scuba tank with like
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: unlimited amount of you know, uh and you're just like
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: going for hours, like swimming under like maybe it's home
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: from like a submarine or something a TV. I don't
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: think we capture very well as well, we don't because
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: we put the cameras awa. Time gets dark and we're
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: going back to camp. Often the most like not exciting,
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: but like the adventure part of the venture starts as
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: soon as like we're like, okay, let's pack up the
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: cameras because it's dark. Don't anything that brings us back
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: to full circle to year in Garrett's first trip when
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: we walked by supposedly the same rock in the darkness
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: where it goes, we've that rock right there. Don't listen
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: to that. Steve always says it's not a death march
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: until you disagree about where you're going. Yeah, finally, a
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: death is not a death march until there's a fight
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: and there's like there's a fight and there's people that
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: are going to branch off and go their own direction.
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: We're not sticking together as a team anymore. Boys that
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: you guys can go that way, we'll see it camp. Well,
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: we ended up we ended up walking out a different
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: way than we came in. Uh. After I got his bucket, right, Yeah,
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: that night, I'm pretty sure. Yeah, And it was not
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: it was not the ideal route. Technology has changed death
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: marches because what here's what used to drive What used
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: to drive a death marches is what drove a death marches. This.
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: You are in difficult to navigate terrain and you're operating
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: with GPS with no mapping or track function, right, So
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: you wander around all day being like I'm gonna go
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: around that cactus patch and there's a little pass through
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: the hill, right and and that looks like a horrible
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: little ditch that I should not go around. And then
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: at dark, all you know is you know a point
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: that you made where campus, and so then it's like,
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: I guess we'll just walked straight to that point. That's
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: not how you got there. There are so many nights
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: and we've been walking. I'm just like walking behind you,
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: like a couple of people behind you. And then all
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: of a sudden we stopped. I see the GPS come out,
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: and I'm like, ship, we're not anywhere and we're not
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: close to home. Boys. Started keeping my own track once
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: you could do that, because I just started to mistrust
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: the what was the one in Colorado? We did with
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: Rourke that it was like that wasn't a full There
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: was one with Brody we got a big fight was
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: on that one down to the golf course. That now
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: that night, that was a good one. I enjoyed that one.
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: But earlier we did some We went to the It's
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: always easy to go down to the to the bottom
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: of a draw easically, think it's easier walking for a
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: little bit until it turns into a waterfall and then
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: you're like, oh, this wasn't the right right. Yeah, I
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: do think I'll stand by this. I do think that
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: um that people don't like my route selection, but it's
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: not haphazard. Okay, it's not. I'm factoring in. I'm probably
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: factoring in more things than you're factoring in. It's probably
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: It's probably true, which is I don't care if I'm
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: lost or not. That's one of the things which is
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: good because when I first started, I did not like
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: walking a night. Really, I hadn't done a lot of it.
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: I have the sense of like I could be back
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: to the spot. There's no you don't need to be anywhere.
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: We have all this, but there's a sense that I've
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: gotta get back. Yeah, it's like I think it's ingrained
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: in US as a whatever. There's no you don't need
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: to be anywhere. It really opens up possibilities when you say, Okay,
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: I'll hike for three hours in the dark or yeah,
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: or just it's fine, it's gonna be fine. Like there's
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: no sense of you need to be here at a
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: certain time or do you think all the listeners understand them,
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: like or maybe people that don't hunt much like hunting
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: and Western hunting is like there's generally no trails. I
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: just like I think, but I think of people who
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: don't hunt or haven't really spent a lot of time
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: out west in the mountains and stuff. Yeah, it's like
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: most of it's not on a trail. So we're talking
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: about like hiking back in the night. It's like you're
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: just you're walking on the Yeah, you're bushwhacking. Yeah, And
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: that's like I can wear you down. Some of my
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: five some of my best, um, some of my happiest,
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: my mentally happiest moments would be not filming anything, but
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: when you got just enough moonlight to do a good
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: no headland night hike. I like that. It was nice.
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: That was a really nice when when when you when
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: everybody's just running dark a few miles like that. Yeah,
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: that happened on the go hunt. I feel like a
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: couple of times with that the snow, the snow is
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: bright enough no headlamps to kind of bugging you. Yea,
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: I love it. The headland can be a little disorienting
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: because you only have like your little tube a light
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: that you can look through. You know, so if you
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: kind of let your eyes, if it's not pitch black out,
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: if you let your eyes aggest, you can end up
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: seeing a lot which is cool. Um. I was just wondering.
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: I know we don't have uh, Justin Turkowski here, paren
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: James Hare, but for any of you guys who have
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: done like surface water filming, I don't think any of
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: you guys have done underwater filming or have you. If
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: someone could speak a little bit, yeah, I mean I
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: can't speak to Justin and parents. They're like real, like
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: the real deal. I will say to their cover is
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: just amazing. A little bit I did. I ended up
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: burning up a camera, So yeah, you've done speaking of
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: the like difficulty of keeping gear running for sure. No,
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: But the thing I think Justin it was really impressive
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: because when we were down this is not this is
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: season ten. I think I didn't do the season eleven
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: hawaii wan but we were down there with a similar crew.
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: You came up, Steve, and you were talking about how
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: like you guys were on some fish you shot and
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: then surfaced to catch air and then went back down
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: and justin like stayed down the whole time, and like
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: you on that to be very impressive. Yeah. I was like, dude,
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: that is because it's like, yeah, his coverage on that
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: I don't and I don't see parents, but I'm sure
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: it's like absolutely just as insane. It's like it's like
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: we talked about were bitchy little bitches, but like, dude,
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: the underwater stuff is a whole different deal. Like his
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: coverage is so impressive because he's able to like connect
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: everything kind of in one shot. And I think it's
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: also the way things are set up underwater and going
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: to play out. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's really cool.
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: I guess in that way, it seems like the skill
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: of the camera operators need to be equal to or
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: surpass the skills of the hunter, right, which is the case. Yeah,
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: in the room, I'm just gonna ask who like didn't
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: who hasn't hunted or didn't grow up hunting, and then
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: now because they've been like following Steve and Janice and
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: the rest of our gang, Like who could just pick
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: it up and do it? I didn't grow up hunting,
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: but I could. I could I get something down if
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: I had to. I think, I don't know, not nothing,
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: maybe not a wall hanger, but I could shoot it up. Steve,
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: what do you think I mean? I don't know. I mean,
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: unless you're just kicked in the head by a mutle,
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: I don't know how you would not have picked up
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: like a lot of little points. Yeah, you know that's
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: that's a funny point. Because we were in Alaska and
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: I had this on our Texas deal too with Johannis thing.
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: It was like I really enjoyed the hunting side of
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: it more than the filming side of it. Like I
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: wanted to not film. I just wanted to like be
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: hunting caribou because I like, I feel like I have
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: a knowledge of hunting now that I didn't have when
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: I started. Took a long time to get it, but yeah,
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: I feel like I spotted some game on that one.
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: I had some good some good eyes We just made
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: a video of an episode we tried to make for
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: season eleven, but it was just lots of problems with
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: weather equipment, COVID. UH. It was an ice fishing episode.
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: So we made a ten minute We made a ten
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: minute video about the episode that never will be in
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: an explanation of why I'll never being. It's kind of
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: a it's a little bit of a condemnation. I sent
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: it to UH. I sent to a friend of mine
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: who was friends with UM, a friend of mine whose
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: friends with Jim Harrison, and I sent it to him
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: to watch and he had to laugh about it, and
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: he said, you've read Harrison's piece about ice fishing called
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: the moronic sport, right, But of all the things, uh,
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: what is the hardest thing that What is the hardest
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: thing to make seem interesting with a camera? Ice fishing
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: and white tailed deer standard and white tailed deer stand
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: That's crazy because that's that's you're talking about. Probably of
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: the outdoor television he has made his white tailed deer stands,
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: and all of it's like pretty formulaic because there's only something.
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: There's really so much you can do, like you can't
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: you're stuck in a spot. You know you can't cover it.
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: You can't. You're not walking around, you're not glass and
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: there's not like new things. You're usually solitary, so there's
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: no conversations with like another person that you can do
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: the way you can with like a Western style hunt
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: or if you're fishing or something. It's like, yeah, it's
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: pretty much. A friend described it to me as whisper
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: whisper shoot. That's pretty accurate. Yeah, ice fishing in white
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: tail deer home, anytime you're anytime you're stuck in one spot,
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: it's really hard to just give a variety of angles.
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: Menasitor has a hard time because you just don't have
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: you don't have like the coverage. It's just limited. You
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: have like one viewpoint. Yeah, I feel like the talent
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: is going to carry that the whole way through. The
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: white tail hunter with that camera in his face, talking
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: about what's going on is your content because otherwise you're
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: looking at time lapses, leaf shots, maybe some deer. There's
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: been so many times when you're up on like our
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: eight of just sitting in a saddle and you're just like,
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: I guess I'll film some more bark. That's never gonna
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: make it to ye. Yeah, yeah, yeah, those are tough.
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: I remember one time I got we were doing a
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: Michigan hunt much. I don't know if that episode came
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: out that there was three the other day, said to
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: I said to it, I forgot. There's been three that
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: we didn't do. Out of the d fifty whatever, there's
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: been three we didn't cut, but that was that was
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: one we didn't cut that. Yeah, well, Chris, I asked Steve,
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: I said, did that show not make it? Because Chris
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: had to get out of the stand take No, I
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: hadn't take a leak, man, I climbed down. The other
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: debate about the tree stand hunting is like if you're
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: in the same tree or the not the same tree,
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: but you snake it out and just peak, yeah and
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: basically touching. If I was in a tree stand, it's
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: easy to take a leak. But I was in a
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: blind on somebody else's property, and I was like, well,
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: I'm not just gonna like pee in this side of
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: this dude's blind, right, because that's kind of messed up. Yeah,
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: in a box blind and you were in a tree
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: that I could you were like, I don't know, twenty
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: yards away from me. Lass on and we hadn't seen
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: anything all morning, and I'm like, okay, really I gotta
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: take a leak. So I climbed down. I'd left I
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: made a rookie mistake. I'd left my camera in the
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: blind because I didn't want to make noise climbing down
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: the ladder and like banging everything around. So I leave
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: the camera. I get down. I get down the ladder.
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: All of a sudden, I see Steve do like the
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: antler hands up and I'm just like, and I can
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: hear this thing like crunching the leaves, and I'm like,
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: and I just I like take out my cell phone
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: and I'm like, try slowly race up my iPhone like
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: it's gonna make it in. That was That was a
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: that was the lesson to learn. Man, I knew better
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: leave my camera too. I was like bummed out about that. Yeah,
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: that was one of the That was probably the coldest.
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: That was one of the coldest I've ever That's that
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: wet Midwest. Yeah that was cold. That was cold. Yeah,
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: that was a tough one. Well man, We've got to
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: go out and make some more shows. Oh, please do it?
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: Please do I do have to say I'm old for
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: two on this season. I was supposed to do two
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: of them, and I got way laid for various reasons. Um,
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: without a doubt, Like all of us have been saying,
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: it's like amazing being out in the field filming this show.
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: Every time I learned something, whether it's hunting or tenacity
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: or you know, I just can't say enough about how
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: how big of an influence. This last seven years of
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: filming this with you has been positive, all positive, best job,
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: best job I've ever had. For sure. I thought of doubt.
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: You guys have all taken your little breaks too and
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: going on to you know stuff, air quotes, you know
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: better things, and then I wouldn't say better well at
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: the time you did. And then six months later I
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: get an email, our phone call, so I got scratches
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: different at all, scratches different. Yeah, No, I've it's been
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: I've had I've had just a wonderful time with you guys. Man. Um.
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: As much as I like I love knocking around with
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: my kids, um, I like just going doing stuff for fun,
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: but I really, uh yeah, the time, the time we've
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: all spent in the field has been pretty special, and
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: we've seen a lot of crazy ship yeah, real adventure. Yeah,
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: there's no there's there's Yeah, there's nothing else I do
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: for work that's like there's like kind of created or
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: constructed adventure. This is real adventure. Every time you don't
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: know what's gonna happen? Is it? Is it? Drug Store Cowboys?
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: That Gus Vand's Aunt movie where the guys always says, uh,
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: the things we've seen, Bob, the things we've seen, I
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: always quote that it's crazy shit. Well that other cool
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: thing too. And we've all talked about like the most
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: positive feedback from the general public anything I've nobody cares
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: about anything else. They're like, you know, Steve Ornel, Yeah, like, uh,
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: can I get you to sign you know, I have
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: something signed. Yeah. It's been fun, man, things we've seen
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: and the things we'll see, things will sing in the future.
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: Ye No. And the cast of characters that come come
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: along with the show, like Danny Yep and everybody else
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: that we've gotten to meet over the years. I value
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: all those Oh. I mean you could just spend time
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: like I didn't know col and then all of a
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: sudden you you spend all day every day for like
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: a week ago. Cal Yeah, you're like, oh, I know
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: this guy. Yeah great, Yeah, it's right. How many guys
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: are sticking around for Tribuae. I got nowhere to go,
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: I got nowhere to be. You're not a local and
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: not a local. So when you're watching season eleven or
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: any of the show is going back a long long time.
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: These are some of the These are the voices you
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: will not hear occusially Gill's voices in there. Maybe in
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: the background. It was a cameo now and then, but
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: it's like the people behind it. I once it was
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: of a different camera guy that went back to the
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: one of the guys that shot the very first episodes,
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: very first episodes. I once uh remarked that I thought
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: that the amount of walking it was like the per
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: the me is a bird hunter and the cameraman was
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: the bird dog. And the amount of miles put on, Yeah,
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: putting some miles on. So when you're watching the show, uh,
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: that's who's putting the miles on. And um, we'll be
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: rolling out an episode every week, I don't know how
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: eight shows. Uh we uh some some great spearfish and stuff,
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: big game hunting stuff, turkey stuff, the usual mix, great
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: characters and uh, we'll be seen first again for free.
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: I keep the get people seeing that they think where
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: it's like a chart, it's for free. That's a good deal, man,
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: that's a good deal watching. Go watch you watch all
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: kinds of stuff on there available there. We'll have a
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: lot of auxiliary stuff and watch out for our episode
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: where we deconstruct why an episode doesn't become an episode
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: that is an episode that's a full episode. No, it's
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: just a YouTube video. It's ten minutes long. But it's
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: about why Yannie doesn't think it's funny. But Yanni's like
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: has taken to negging me all the time. He thinks
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: it's two inside baseball. But I think it's funny. It's funny.
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: I'm honest, it's very it's a very it's a funny
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: thing about why ice fishing is the white whale. I'd
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: say it's the white whale, which is a Moby Dick reference.
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: You guys aren't well read why it's the white whale?
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: Aboutdoor TV. It can't be captured. That's in there. Yeah,
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: that was in there. That's in there. That's probably the video.
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: You can't if it's not spearing. It's like, it's the
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: white whale. Ice fish you cannot be captured. Um, and
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: so we'll release that and you'll and you'll see about that.
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: But season eleven good as ever. Meat dot Com check
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: it out and stay tuned for trivia. We'll see what
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: these guys have picked up over the years. Oh not much,
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: No no, I got a expectations from my performance. I
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: think there's gonna be some strong performance. Thanks everybody for
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: joining
