- 0:04Speaker 1: Let's get to our next insider on the line right now,
- 0:07Speaker 1: Robert Murray joining us.
- 0:08Speaker 2: And this is a big day.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Robert read you on the other day, but now we
- 0:11Speaker 1: can officially say welcome to the FT fam. It would
- 0:14Speaker 1: be one of our regular insider contributors. Man, we love
- 0:17Speaker 1: talking to you, so thank you for greet to talk
- 0:20Speaker 1: to us more frequently.
- 0:22Speaker 3: Now, no, thank you guys for having me. I've been
- 0:24Speaker 3: a huge fan of you guys for for years. I've
- 0:26Speaker 3: known Eric for years covering in with the Brewers, and
- 0:29Speaker 3: he's always just incredible to me. So to be part
- 0:32Speaker 3: of this, to be on here with you more like
- 0:34Speaker 3: this is an honor and I'm gonna make the best
- 0:37Speaker 3: decision you guys have ever made.
- 0:39Speaker 4: Well, welcome aboard, Rookie. I know you got you got
- 0:41Speaker 4: some like you were you were just like a baby face.
- 0:44Speaker 4: Now you're a sauna babyface guy. But we treat rookie,
- 0:48Speaker 4: We treat rookies on on the FT network pretty well.
- 0:51Speaker 4: But don't don't get don't get, don't get comfortable.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Don't take that.
- 0:56Speaker 4: So that's no hazy, no hate, not hate.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, so let's get into biz, shall we.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Let's start with your thoughts on the Mets Rangers trade
- 1:09Speaker 1: that broke last night.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Yeah, it was a real surprise seeing that won for
- 1:15Speaker 3: one trade there, but overall it made a ton of sense.
- 1:18Speaker 3: And Marcus Simeon's name has been mentioned on the trade
- 1:21Speaker 3: block for basically the entire offseason. I want to say
- 1:24Speaker 3: Evan Grant, who covers the Rangers, started it and I
- 1:27Speaker 3: asked Chris Young about it at the GM meetings and
- 1:29Speaker 3: he didn't necessarily dismiss the idea, like he wasn't like
- 1:32Speaker 3: trying to trade him by any means, But they were
- 1:34Speaker 3: very open to the idea, and when this scenario presented itself,
- 1:38Speaker 3: it made sense for both sides to consider here, Like
- 1:40Speaker 3: for the Rangers, you move off of Simeon, you end
- 1:44Speaker 3: up adding a guy like Brandon Nimo, who is a
- 1:46Speaker 3: tremendous option there. He adds leadership at like it creates
- 1:52Speaker 3: more payroll flexibility, because that was a big priority for
- 1:54Speaker 3: them in terms of trying to shed some payroll, and
- 1:57Speaker 3: they did so with the non tenders. They did so
- 1:59Speaker 3: at this trade and it's been a real focus for them.
- 2:03Speaker 2: But for the.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Rangers' perspective, I totally get it, and from the Mets' perspective.
- 2:07Speaker 3: I think it's really interesting here adding Marcus Simion moving
- 2:10Speaker 3: on from a gully Brandon Nemo, who is as respected
- 2:13Speaker 3: as anyone in that clubhouse, has been there his entire career.
- 2:16Speaker 3: There's so many layers to it that like it's it's
- 2:19Speaker 3: hard to dissect. But at the end of the day,
- 2:21Speaker 3: it made sense for both teams, and that's why they
- 2:23Speaker 3: did it, because they've been talking about it for a
- 2:24Speaker 3: couple of weeks now, for a few weeks now.
- 2:27Speaker 5: There's a lot of impacts here. So you think about
- 2:29Speaker 5: Pete Alonzo, you think about the as Edwin Diaz here,
- 2:33Speaker 5: like what what especially is the impact on those two guys.
- 2:37Speaker 5: What happens if the Mets don't get any of those guys, so,
- 2:40Speaker 5: like where where would they go after that?
- 2:43Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 2:44Speaker 4: They?
- 2:45Speaker 3: I think Will Salmon of the Athletic put it really well.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Is it shows that even though these guys have been
- 2:50Speaker 3: with the organization for so long, like David Stearns, isn't
- 2:52Speaker 3: afraid to move on for what he feels is best
- 2:54Speaker 3: for the team. And I think that's a really good
- 2:57Speaker 3: attribute by him because we've seen gms both in base
- 3:00Speaker 3: in other sports as well, get really attached to players
- 3:03Speaker 3: that they've been around long term, or that they drafted
- 3:05Speaker 3: or like that they signed as free agents or just whatever,
- 3:09Speaker 3: and it's it's led to some issues. And with Stearns,
- 3:12Speaker 3: it like he wasn't afraid to move on from Nimo,
- 3:14Speaker 3: and if that's the case, he's definitely not going to
- 3:15Speaker 3: be afraid to move on from Edwin Diaz or Pete Alonzo.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Like that being said, they want to retain both of
- 3:21Speaker 3: those guys if possible, and then also Sterens didn't rule
- 3:24Speaker 3: out adding it like another impact player, even if they
- 3:27Speaker 3: ended up resigning both of those guys. So from the
- 3:32Speaker 3: Mets perspectively, they definitely want to keep both of those guys.
- 3:36Speaker 3: But that being said, let's say that Diaz leaves in
- 3:38Speaker 3: free agency. You can immediately go after a Devin Williams type,
- 3:42Speaker 3: who Stearns was with in Milwaukee and knows him better
- 3:45Speaker 3: than almost anybody in baseball. They could go after a
- 3:47Speaker 3: Robert Suarez type, which is a really intriguing option because
- 3:51Speaker 3: he was dominant in San Diego. He's a very good player.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Both of those guys are going to do very well
- 3:55Speaker 3: in free agency. So like if they lose Diaz, it's
- 3:58Speaker 3: not the end of the world with if they end
- 4:00Speaker 3: up losing Pete Alonso, they're gonna have to get creative
- 4:02Speaker 3: and trying to figure out how to fill first base,
- 4:04Speaker 3: because he's as durable as any guy in ball, like
- 4:08Speaker 3: he can consistently play around one hundred and sixty two
- 4:10Speaker 3: games a year, which not many people can say. But yeah,
- 4:14Speaker 3: they're definitely, definitely would not roll out either of them leaving,
- 4:18Speaker 3: especially since Sterens showed that he's willing to part with
- 4:21Speaker 3: those kind of guys.
- 4:22Speaker 4: All right, let's stick with the Rangers. Since we're talking
- 4:24Speaker 4: a little bit about the Rangers here. They're non tenders
- 4:28Speaker 4: A doles Garcia and Jonaheim. Obviously a doles Garcia is
- 4:34Speaker 4: you know, we just talked to Jim Bowden about it,
- 4:37Speaker 4: and he's kind of that high side, high upside. But
- 4:41Speaker 4: Jonaheim was an All Star catcher. The catching position this
- 4:45Speaker 4: year in free agency is thin. Does that bode well
- 4:48Speaker 4: for Jonaheim? Does that bode well for the fact that
- 4:51Speaker 4: somebody could take him on a flyer? Do you feel
- 4:54Speaker 4: like his value has been decreased enough that you know
- 4:58Speaker 4: what he's looking at, like a James McCann type of
- 5:01Speaker 4: contract where it's a one year, we might get you
- 5:04Speaker 4: ninety games type of contract.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Yeah, he's gonna end up benefiting from this, And I
- 5:10Speaker 3: don't necessarily think he's gonna dup getting the contract that
- 5:12Speaker 3: he was doing arbitration. I want to say it was
- 5:14Speaker 3: for aron six million that he was supposed to get
- 5:16Speaker 3: an arb But there's gonna be plenty of different suitors here.
- 5:19Speaker 3: You look at it, you have I mean, I could
- 5:21Speaker 3: end up seeing a team like the Milwaukee Brewers taking
- 5:24Speaker 3: a look at it like because they, you know, better
- 5:26Speaker 3: than anyone, they value the backup catcher position and they
- 5:30Speaker 3: just value the catcher position in general. And obviously they
- 5:33Speaker 3: have William Contreras there, but they also they at the
- 5:36Speaker 3: trade headline. Last year they added Danny Jensen from the
- 5:39Speaker 3: from the Rays, who they thought could end up being
- 5:41Speaker 3: an impact guy. So maybe he could end up being
- 5:43Speaker 3: pencil in there. The San Diego Padres can make a
- 5:45Speaker 3: lot of sense there as well, because they've been looking
- 5:48Speaker 3: for a catcher for a couple of years now. They've
- 5:50Speaker 3: tried getting different guys over trader through free agency and
- 5:53Speaker 3: hasn't necessarily worked out. But there's so many different teams
- 5:57Speaker 3: that can end up being impossibility for him, which will
- 6:00Speaker 3: only lead to the bidding being getting more lucrative. Again,
- 6:03Speaker 3: I don't think six million is gonna be gonna be
- 6:05Speaker 3: the number for him, But that being said to like
- 6:08Speaker 3: Adula's Garcia, he is a player. There's not many people
- 6:11Speaker 3: who can match the power that he's got. And obviously
- 6:13Speaker 3: he's not like the perfect player. He's got his flaws
- 6:15Speaker 3: to his game, but the power immediately makes him a
- 6:19Speaker 3: player that should be of interest to a lot of
- 6:21Speaker 3: different teams. And like, this isn't necessarily something that I've heard,
- 6:24Speaker 3: but I would love to see him with the Pittsburgh
- 6:27Speaker 3: Pirates because they they need big boppers in that lab.
- 6:30Speaker 3: They want to end up upgrading the offense in a
- 6:32Speaker 3: big way, and we've seen them connected to Schwarber and
- 6:35Speaker 3: some of these other guys Garcia. I mean, I don't
- 6:39Speaker 3: necessarily not much money is going to get, but clearly
- 6:41Speaker 3: the Pirates are willing to spend because they were after
- 6:43Speaker 3: Josh Naylor and connected with some of these other guys.
- 6:46Speaker 3: So I would love to see Garcia possibly being a
- 6:49Speaker 3: fit with the Pirates, but he's gonna have a bunch
- 6:51Speaker 3: of other teams after him as well.
- 6:53Speaker 4: Maybe the guy that is most coveted in free agency
- 6:57Speaker 4: isn't always the Kyle Tucker, isn't always the Kyle Schwarverer,
- 7:01Speaker 4: isn't Cody Bellinger. Cody Bellinger has been linked to possibly
- 7:06Speaker 4: the Angels and obviously any team once and because of
- 7:09Speaker 4: the versatility. Do you feel like the Angels are in
- 7:12Speaker 4: a spot where, hey, you know what, we are taking
- 7:15Speaker 4: a gamble on Grayson Rodriguez. If it's a gamble and
- 7:18Speaker 4: now we're gonna try to just solidify and get another
- 7:21Speaker 4: player in there, or do you think it's a you know,
- 7:24Speaker 4: more of a ploy from from Bellinger's side, hoping he
- 7:27Speaker 4: gets to go back to the Yankees, hoping he gets
- 7:29Speaker 4: to go to a team that's closer to contention.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:33Speaker 3: The as soon as the Angels traded Taylor Ward, my
- 7:36Speaker 3: mind immediately went to, like, could they pursue a guy
- 7:39Speaker 3: like Cody Bellinger? And as John Hayman reported, like they
- 7:42Speaker 3: have checked in there. And if I could see Ardie Mareno,
- 7:45Speaker 3: who owns the Angels, being just a guy who just
- 7:48Speaker 3: gets totally obsessed with Bellinger, I could see it. But
- 7:53Speaker 3: that being said, do I see that happening? Probably not.
- 7:56Speaker 3: And one of the prerequisites for Bellinger and his agents
- 7:59Speaker 3: got boored. I believe made this clear the GM meetings
- 8:02Speaker 3: is he wants to win. And if you can end
- 8:05Speaker 3: up if like Bellinger's gonna have a bunch of different
- 8:08Speaker 3: teams involved, it's gonna be the Yankees a bunch of
- 8:11Speaker 3: other contending teams. And he's been with the Yankees, he's
- 8:14Speaker 3: been with the Cubs, and he's been with the Dodgers.
- 8:16Speaker 3: What all three of those have in common, They've all
- 8:18Speaker 3: been contending teams. And going to a team that's not
- 8:21Speaker 3: necessarily contending after being with those organizations would be really
- 8:24Speaker 3: tough on anyone, but especially a guy like Balinger. But yeah,
- 8:28Speaker 3: would be being close to La again be enticing to him.
- 8:31Speaker 3: I'm sure it would. But winning is really important for him,
- 8:34Speaker 3: and that's part of why I think that's pretty unlikely.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Money does talk, and the Angels can end up offering
- 8:41Speaker 3: him a deal that he just can't refuse, and maybe
- 8:43Speaker 3: that's how he ends up going there. That being said, though,
- 8:46Speaker 3: Perry Manassei and their GM there said that they have
- 8:51Speaker 3: more flexibility now after moving war than they had envision
- 8:54Speaker 3: going into the offseason, So maybe that's possible, But I
- 8:57Speaker 3: just do not see that fit happen for Bellinger, and
- 9:01Speaker 3: I would think of return to the Yankees. Are just
- 9:02Speaker 3: going to a different contending team is far more likely.
- 9:07Speaker 1: If you are still carrying a clunky leather brick that
- 9:11Speaker 1: can be mistaken for an old school wallet. May I
- 9:14Speaker 1: introduce you to what Eric Kratz is getting himself for
- 9:18Speaker 1: the holidays.
- 9:19Speaker 4: I mean, this is the greatest wallet that I've ever
- 9:22Speaker 4: seen in my life. Your credit card's fitting here, it's adjustable,
- 9:26Speaker 4: lifetime guaranteed. What like this is a must have for
- 9:31Speaker 4: the holidays.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Absolute must have Ridge Olive matt That is the design
- 9:36Speaker 1: that Kratz has right now, and you can get a
- 9:38Speaker 1: hold of that. There's over fifty plus colors and styles
- 9:41Speaker 1: to choose from.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Over at Ridge.
- 9:43Speaker 1: You can even get a wallet that features every NFL,
- 9:45Speaker 1: MLB or college team. And for a limited time, Ridge
- 9:48Speaker 1: is having their huge Black Friday sale. Head to Ridge
- 9:51Speaker 1: dot com slash foul to get up to forty seven
- 9:54Speaker 1: percent off your order. This is by far the biggest
- 9:56Speaker 1: discount they've given all year. That's Ridge dot com slash
- 9:59Speaker 1: fowl for up to forty seven percent off your order
- 10:01Speaker 1: during their biggest sale of the year. After your purchase
- 10:04Speaker 1: I'll ask you where you heard about Ridge. Tell them
- 10:06Speaker 1: foul Territory.
- 10:07Speaker 4: Sent you intriguing free agent pitcher Michael King came off
- 10:11Speaker 4: a little bit of injury, got healthy at the end
- 10:13Speaker 4: of the season. The Marlins are supposedly in on the
- 10:18Speaker 4: Marlins pitching factory. The Marlins, like I remember, I know
- 10:22Speaker 4: the pitching the minor league pitching coach Jeremy Powell before
- 10:25Speaker 4: he got traded. He was the guy that kind of
- 10:27Speaker 4: was instrumental in all these guys. Is this a shift to, well,
- 10:31Speaker 4: you know what, we don't have a guy that's creating
- 10:33Speaker 4: all these pictures. They're all up in the big leagues
- 10:35Speaker 4: right now. Do we want a veteran type? Is this
- 10:38Speaker 4: a like shift from we're not just going to use
- 10:41Speaker 4: our younger pictures for the Marlins or is it all hogwash?
- 10:45Speaker 3: I don't think it's hogwash at all. It's really cool
- 10:48Speaker 3: coming on this show and being able to talk about
- 10:51Speaker 3: the Marlins, and previously we talked about the Pirates being
- 10:54Speaker 3: teams that could contend and try to end up adding
- 10:57Speaker 3: in free agency and add meaningfully. And with the Marlins,
- 11:00Speaker 3: they're interesting. King is I think it's real and you
- 11:04Speaker 3: can look at it from a number of different ways here,
- 11:06Speaker 3: like they far exceeded expectations last year. Clayton mccallaugh did
- 11:09Speaker 3: a terrific job in Miami, and they have a pitching
- 11:11Speaker 3: staff that allows them so much different flexibility there. Like
- 11:15Speaker 3: Samuel Contra they didn't move him, Edward Cabrera, they didn't
- 11:19Speaker 3: move him. They have super high expectations for a guy
- 11:21Speaker 3: like Gary Perez, and those three together give them just
- 11:25Speaker 3: endless possibilities. It's kind of like what we've been talking
- 11:27Speaker 3: about with the Pirates there too. And if you end
- 11:29Speaker 3: up adding a guy like Michael King to that rotation,
- 11:32Speaker 3: just you have a front four that's as good as
- 11:35Speaker 3: almost any in baseball. He's got tremendous upsiders, teams that
- 11:40Speaker 3: love Michael King around the league, and he's going to
- 11:42Speaker 3: do very well in fre agency and especially so I
- 11:45Speaker 3: think that showed after he made it. It was kind
- 11:47Speaker 3: of a no brainer for him to turn on the
- 11:49Speaker 3: qualifying offer. But you can end up having the flexibility
- 11:53Speaker 3: where you can have those four leading the rotation, or
- 11:55Speaker 3: you sign King and it allows you to maybe move
- 11:58Speaker 3: one of those starting pitch pieces to improve the offense.
- 12:01Speaker 3: I don't know which one would be more likely, but
- 12:04Speaker 3: it's a scenario that would give that front office in
- 12:06Speaker 3: Peter Bendix, just so much different flexibility and options that
- 12:10Speaker 3: I think it would be a really good thing for them.
- 12:11Speaker 3: But I hope they continue to try to add because
- 12:15Speaker 3: them contending and also getting the Pirates contending as well
- 12:18Speaker 3: is just only going to be a great thing for baseball.
- 12:21Speaker 5: Let me ask you this said, I had another question,
- 12:23Speaker 5: but just thinking now, can you see him going back
- 12:25Speaker 5: to the Yankees on a little deal, little nugget over
- 12:28Speaker 5: there back to New York or No.
- 12:31Speaker 3: I don't think it's impossible at all. Like we've seen
- 12:34Speaker 3: the Yankees like they need to add pitching, and they're
- 12:37Speaker 3: going to be connected to bats, they're going to be
- 12:39Speaker 3: connected to bullpen pieces. But a guy like Michael King
- 12:41Speaker 3: for them would make a whole lot of sense. And
- 12:43Speaker 3: we've seen players after getting traded they've signed back with
- 12:46Speaker 3: their teams in free agency. I mean, it's not the
- 12:49Speaker 3: most likely scenario by any means, but it's definitely an
- 12:52Speaker 3: option that I think both sides should consider. And if
- 12:55Speaker 3: they end up offering King the best dealing for agency,
- 12:57Speaker 3: I thank you for his perspective. You absolutely have to
- 13:00Speaker 3: go out and do it, but his market is going
- 13:02Speaker 3: to be very lucrative. I think he's going to end
- 13:05Speaker 3: up doing very well in free agency. And the Yankees,
- 13:08Speaker 3: like even Steinbrenner said that his ideal goal would be
- 13:11Speaker 3: to cut payroll. They're going to figure that out around
- 13:14Speaker 3: the winter meetings time, is what he said. So we'll
- 13:16Speaker 3: see there. But I hope they don't cut payroll because
- 13:19Speaker 3: they're the Yankees. They should be able to go out
- 13:21Speaker 3: and sign just about anybody, and that just it's it
- 13:25Speaker 3: sounds sounds really weird to me.
- 13:27Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely talk about a little more trade possibilities here.
- 13:31Speaker 2: I know, I think I know your answer.
- 13:32Speaker 5: But Terrek's school boy, I mean, the best picture in
- 13:35Speaker 5: all the land left handed wise, talk to me about
- 13:38Speaker 5: where you think he might get traded.
- 13:40Speaker 2: If he might get traded, what do you think, Robert?
- 13:43Speaker 3: I think every team in baseball should be checking in
- 13:45Speaker 3: on this guy, Like how could they not? Like you
- 13:47Speaker 3: can you have him possibly being mentioned on the trade market.
- 13:51Speaker 3: You have to check in to see what the price
- 13:53Speaker 3: is going to be. And the price is just going
- 13:54Speaker 3: to be absolutely insane, and as it should be. As
- 13:57Speaker 3: you said, he's the best picture in all the land.
- 13:59Speaker 3: He's the best picture in base ball, and he's left handed.
- 14:01Speaker 3: He's only saved for one more year, and that could
- 14:04Speaker 3: be what entices the Tigers to really listen on any
- 14:08Speaker 3: trade inquiries. But that being said, you have Schooble in Detroit.
- 14:12Speaker 3: He wants to be there, the organization wants him to
- 14:15Speaker 3: be there. I just don't see any real possibility of
- 14:18Speaker 3: him being moved at this point. I've been surprised before,
- 14:21Speaker 3: but this one would really surprise me. And my expectation
- 14:25Speaker 3: is that he starts the season in Detroit. He does
- 14:29Speaker 3: not have a new contract because they're so far apart,
- 14:32Speaker 3: is what various reports are saying about that. And also
- 14:35Speaker 3: his agent, Scott Bors, prefers his the open market, so
- 14:39Speaker 3: I don't see that being a real possibility there. But
- 14:44Speaker 3: he's gonna probably start the season in Detroit, and if
- 14:47Speaker 3: they're aut of contention at the deadline, then we can
- 14:49Speaker 3: end up seeing him be moved. But my guess is
- 14:51Speaker 3: he plays out the season in Detroit on the same deal,
- 14:54Speaker 3: enters free agency for the season, and then it's going
- 14:58Speaker 3: to be the bidding war of all bitting wars for services.
- 15:01Speaker 4: This is how we make it tough for you, rookie
- 15:03Speaker 4: insiders on FT. All right, we just we just asked
- 15:07Speaker 4: the same question to Jim Bowden with the big league
- 15:10Speaker 4: trade of Nemo for Simeon. What's another expected, like or
- 15:17Speaker 4: future possibility this offseason of a big league trade that
- 15:22Speaker 4: you see could possibly happen. Doesn't have to be exactly
- 15:26Speaker 4: like this, but you know, not the one big leaguer
- 15:29Speaker 4: for six minor leaguers type of trade, like a true
- 15:33Speaker 4: big leaguer everybody wins type of big league trade.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Wait, can I take this in a different direction? Or
- 15:39Speaker 3: am I not allowed to as a rookie.
- 15:41Speaker 4: It's your creative. We want you to be you, Robert,
- 15:43Speaker 4: but don't screw it up.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Okay, I'm not gonna be shaking in my boots over here.
- 15:48Speaker 3: Oh oh, that's talk about pressure.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Okay.
- 15:50Speaker 3: We've seen a bunch of different guys here mentioned in
- 15:52Speaker 3: trade rooms this offseason. The first one I'll start with
- 15:55Speaker 3: is Fernando Tattis Junior, and people people are on the
- 15:58Speaker 3: league of texting me being like like, have you heard
- 16:00Speaker 3: him connected to the Yankees? Have you heard him connected
- 16:02Speaker 3: to so and so team? My expectation as of right
- 16:06Speaker 3: now is that Tatisz Junior will not be traded that
- 16:08Speaker 3: you will be part of the Padres in twenty twenty six.
- 16:12Speaker 3: That being said, though, if let's say or the Padres
- 16:16Speaker 3: potentially new ownership want to shed payroll, does that become
- 16:20Speaker 3: a possibility in future seasons, then I could see that
- 16:23Speaker 3: being a possibility there for sure. I heard Jim say
- 16:29Speaker 3: ti Oscar Hernandez, I'd be really surprised by that. I
- 16:33Speaker 3: think he's I think Todd said it best. He's a
- 16:34Speaker 3: great fit in LA and the only way you could
- 16:37Speaker 3: really move him is if you have all assurances that
- 16:40Speaker 3: you're gonna end up sign Kyle Tucker. So I'm not
- 16:42Speaker 3: looking for that one to be a possibility. I do
- 16:45Speaker 3: think Corey Seeger after this trade, you got to definitely
- 16:49Speaker 3: consider this being a possibility here, and contending teams are
- 16:53Speaker 3: gonna want him. He's obviously a tremendous player. He's an
- 16:56Speaker 3: MVP caliber player. He's dealt with injuries for sure. Tracked
- 17:00Speaker 3: is big and that always complicates things. But when an
- 17:02Speaker 3: elite player like that could possibly be had, especially with
- 17:06Speaker 3: the Rangers trying to ship Peril. Of all the guys
- 17:08Speaker 3: that I mentioned, I would think he's probably the most likely,
- 17:11Speaker 3: but I still have a hard time seeing the trade happen.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Well, Robert, you crushed it in your first official FT appearance,
- 17:19Speaker 1: even though we've had you a million times before this.
- 17:22Speaker 2: There you go, Kratz thumbs up.
- 17:24Speaker 6: I didn't screw it up on it.
- 17:25Speaker 2: No, you never do, dude, You're spot on now. Yeah,
- 17:28Speaker 2: but we're watching people. You always get great.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Yeah that the live chat loves you, so you know.
- 17:35Speaker 1: It's all love here man. Thanks for joining us, and
- 17:37Speaker 1: we're excited to have you more frequently. We'll see at
- 17:39Speaker 1: the winter meetings too, but we'll talk soon, okay, and
- 17:41Speaker 1: have a great holiday.
- 17:43Speaker 3: Hey, Happy Thanksgiving to you guys. And I just want
- 17:45Speaker 3: to say thank you again for always being so good
- 17:46Speaker 3: to me. You guys are the best and I'm just
- 17:48Speaker 3: I'm honored to be part of the team. So much
- 17:50Speaker 3: love and I'll talk to you guys soon.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Time to hit our off season to do list covering
- 17:55Speaker 1: the San Diego Padres, and we're very pleased to be
- 17:58Speaker 1: joined by Marty Caswell, who right for the Sporting Tribune
- 18:01Speaker 1: and is now going to be a regular contributor to
- 18:05Speaker 1: Friar Territory, part of the FT Network the Padres Show.
- 18:07Speaker 2: So Marty welcome.
- 18:09Speaker 1: We're excited to have you and to chat with you
- 18:11Speaker 1: more frequently and get right into the San Diego Padres.
- 18:14Speaker 2: So how you doing and congrats?
- 18:17Speaker 6: Hi everybody. I'm happy Monday. Thank you so much, Todd,
- 18:20Speaker 6: Eric and Scott. I am so thrilled to be here
- 18:22Speaker 6: and join your outstanding crew, work with our guy Kyle
- 18:26Speaker 6: Glazer and talk some Padres. So thank you so much
- 18:28Speaker 6: for having me. It's a it's a true pleasure.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Thank you. Yeah, pleasure is all ours. Love your coverage
- 18:35Speaker 1: of the Padres. So let's get right into it. Let's
- 18:37Speaker 1: give everyone a taste of what Friar Territory has to offer.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Lay down the off season to do list in your
- 18:43Speaker 1: mind for the Padres the top three most important.
- 18:46Speaker 6: Number one has to start with their president and baseball
- 18:49Speaker 6: ops and their GM AJ Preller, entering the final year
- 18:52Speaker 6: of his deal. We've been talking a bit the idea
- 18:54Speaker 6: of an extension for aj Preller for I mean shoot,
- 18:57Speaker 6: since since the last month of the regular season, and
- 18:59Speaker 6: it was brought up up during the intro press conference
- 19:02Speaker 6: for Craig Stammen, their new manager. We asked Padres CEO
- 19:06Speaker 6: Eric Grupner about what's going on. No one will really say, oh,
- 19:09Speaker 6: this is a done deal. It's going to happen. There
- 19:11Speaker 6: is the likelihood and the expectation it's going to happen,
- 19:14Speaker 6: but it still hasn't happened. So I don't think you
- 19:16Speaker 6: can really move on with anything else and know what
- 19:19Speaker 6: this future is going to be about until we have
- 19:20Speaker 6: absolute certainty on Padre's GMAJ Prowler. All indications, including from
- 19:26Speaker 6: Craig Stamman, was that this is going to happen. But
- 19:28Speaker 6: the fact that it is now November twenty fourth, the
- 19:31Speaker 6: Baseball meetings are upon us or the GM meetings are
- 19:34Speaker 6: the GM meetings, The Winter meetings are upon us, and
- 19:37Speaker 6: there's still no deal. That's going to be interesting. Number two,
- 19:40Speaker 6: it's going to be the starting pitching. We know that
- 19:43Speaker 6: Michael King, Dylan Cees, they declined their options. They are
- 19:47Speaker 6: now free agents. You Darvish is out for all of
- 19:50Speaker 6: twenty twenty six and who knows where his future with
- 19:52Speaker 6: the Padres is. He has three years left on his deal.
- 19:55Speaker 6: So right now, when you look at the Padre's rotation,
- 19:58Speaker 6: this is what they have. They have Nit Paveta, he
- 20:00Speaker 6: was an absolute bargain who was a fine for the
- 20:03Speaker 6: Padres late last December. They have Randy Vasquez, who is
- 20:07Speaker 6: a fine back of the rotation sort of piece. And
- 20:10Speaker 6: they have uncertainty around JP Series, who was part of
- 20:13Speaker 6: the interesting trade for Mason Miller that also saw them
- 20:17Speaker 6: giving up a top prospect, Leo Derie. So the starting pitching,
- 20:21Speaker 6: you can never have enough starting pitching, and right now
- 20:23Speaker 6: the Padres have one guy that's a lot. Also, I
- 20:25Speaker 6: should have mentioned that Joe Musgrove is going to return
- 20:29Speaker 6: after major Timmy John surgery, but we don't know what
- 20:32Speaker 6: he We don't know what to expect from Joe Musgrove
- 20:35Speaker 6: when he does return. I spoke to him a couple
- 20:37Speaker 6: of weeks ago in the Padres hired Craig Stamm, and
- 20:41Speaker 6: he says that he is in the right spot right now.
- 20:43Speaker 6: The velocity the spin is very good when he has
- 20:45Speaker 6: his bullpen, and he is proceeding with this off season
- 20:48Speaker 6: in a normal off season. But who knows on Joe
- 20:51Speaker 6: Musgrove what to expect when he does join the Padres.
- 20:55Speaker 6: But he does expect to be part to be ready
- 20:57Speaker 6: for spring training and last on my list right now,
- 21:00Speaker 6: it's a long list, but we during top three would
- 21:03Speaker 6: be first baseman. Not sure what the future is for
- 21:05Speaker 6: Luisa Rise. He is currently a free agent. I know
- 21:08Speaker 6: he wants to return, but I think the Padres want
- 21:10Speaker 6: a little bit more slugged from their first baseman. We'll
- 21:13Speaker 6: see how that market sorts itself out. I know the
- 21:16Speaker 6: Padres might be interested in bringing back Ryan or Hearn,
- 21:19Speaker 6: but right now they do not have a true first baseman.
- 21:22Speaker 6: Although although they could move Jake Crunerworth from second base
- 21:26Speaker 6: back to first base, where he filled in very, very well,
- 21:29Speaker 6: but right now my top three AJ Pewler the uncertainty
- 21:32Speaker 6: about his future starting pitching. They can they convert Morohone
- 21:36Speaker 6: or Mason Miller into a rotation piece and finding a
- 21:40Speaker 6: slugging first baseman.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Kratz, we picked you to talk about Mendi's not just
- 21:47Speaker 1: because they're ridiculously comfortable, but also because they're very festive.
- 21:52Speaker 1: When the holiday season hits, you go on the website
- 21:55Speaker 1: and there are just so many more designs to check out,
- 21:58Speaker 1: and they just scream krats getting little matching sets with
- 22:03Speaker 1: everybody that he knows.
- 22:05Speaker 4: You know what. They're called me undies, not you undies.
- 22:08Speaker 4: So you go in and you say, this one's for me,
- 22:11Speaker 4: this set is for me, This is what is good
- 22:14Speaker 4: for me not you Undies, me Undies a lot of
- 22:18Speaker 4: different ones to choose from.
- 22:19Speaker 2: I'm so confused.
- 22:20Speaker 1: But what I do know is that you can knock
- 22:22Speaker 1: out all of your holiday gifting needs today with me
- 22:25Speaker 1: undies and to get the exclusive holiday deals up to
- 22:28Speaker 1: fifty percent off meyundies dot com slash foul enter promo
- 22:32Speaker 1: code foul. That's me undies dot com slash foul promo
- 22:37Speaker 1: code is foul for up to fifty percent off matching
- 22:42Speaker 1: holiday prints with your person.
- 22:43Speaker 3: You can't beat that, all right?
- 22:45Speaker 4: You said extend, aj Preller, No extensions are two sided.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Is there any chance that aj Preller says, I've already
- 22:54Speaker 4: spent all this money, I've already spent all these prospects.
- 22:56Speaker 4: I've built this team up. If he sees what all
- 23:00Speaker 4: ownership or the flux and owner ownership that we're at
- 23:03Speaker 4: in San Diego, is he like, eh, you know what,
- 23:07Speaker 4: Maybe I do want to go and be probably the
- 23:09Speaker 4: most coveted GM out there on the market and walk away.
- 23:14Speaker 4: Or is this definitely a two sided extension talk where
- 23:18Speaker 4: they both want AJ Prewler to be the GM for
- 23:21Speaker 4: a long time in San Diego.
- 23:23Speaker 6: I think it's too it's two sided, and I don't
- 23:26Speaker 6: know that there's any certainty where that we know for
- 23:28Speaker 6: sure that aj Prowler is going to be the guy
- 23:30Speaker 6: long term. I think that the big, the giant elephant
- 23:32Speaker 6: in the room is the uncertainty about Padre's ownership. He
- 23:36Speaker 6: was very, very close with the late Peter Sidler, who
- 23:39Speaker 6: is a big reason why the Padres were able to
- 23:41Speaker 6: spend that kind of money and extend Fernando Tatis Junior
- 23:44Speaker 6: and Manny Machado and Bogart and you know, big contracts
- 23:47Speaker 6: for Joe Musgrove and for you darbish. But Peter passed
- 23:51Speaker 6: away a couple of years ago, and now the current chairman,
- 23:55Speaker 6: John Siler, has made it clear that he's looking to
- 23:57Speaker 6: sell the team. So I don't know right now that
- 24:00Speaker 6: we know what's going to happen with Padre's ownership. And
- 24:04Speaker 6: when ownership comes in a lot of times they want
- 24:07Speaker 6: their own people. And maybe j Pler is like, listen,
- 24:09Speaker 6: I've been here for ten years. I did my thing.
- 24:11Speaker 6: We would We tried to go ahead and build up
- 24:13Speaker 6: on Peter's vision. Padres have one of the greatest atmospheres
- 24:17Speaker 6: in baseball. As you guys know, Peco Park is sold
- 24:20Speaker 6: out every single night. But we don't know what's going
- 24:23Speaker 6: to happen now with the future of this organization. John,
- 24:27Speaker 6: we have not spoken with John Syler. I think he
- 24:29Speaker 6: spoke maybe once with the Padres radio flagship, but he
- 24:32Speaker 6: has not made himself available to speak with the media.
- 24:35Speaker 6: So we don't know really what John Siler thinks on
- 24:39Speaker 6: on AJ Preler. So we're going to We're gonna find
- 24:42Speaker 6: out a lot. But again, I don't know that I
- 24:45Speaker 6: feel like this is an absolute lock. Maybe if you're
- 24:48Speaker 6: a J Preler, you want to go somewhere where you
- 24:50Speaker 6: you have firmer footing, like you know, with the future
- 24:53Speaker 6: of the organization is going to be, and right now
- 24:55Speaker 6: there's a lot of I don't know when it comes
- 24:57Speaker 6: to the future of the Padres ownership, talk.
- 25:00Speaker 5: To me a little bit about Well, first off, I
- 25:02Speaker 5: think the Padres have one of the best reliever relieving
- 25:06Speaker 5: teams in the country. I've always thought that. I've always
- 25:09Speaker 5: thought when the relievers came in almost lights out. But
- 25:13Speaker 5: as we've seen, but you know, we're talking about mister
- 25:15Speaker 5: Miller here, Mason Miller. All of a sudden in the rotation,
- 25:19Speaker 5: we got throws over one hundred and three miles an hour.
- 25:22Speaker 5: I mean, talk to me a little bit about that
- 25:25Speaker 5: question and what their you know, prognosis and thoughts are there.
- 25:29Speaker 6: I can't wait to get a spring training so we
- 25:30Speaker 6: can ask Mason Miller. I know that you guys had
- 25:32Speaker 6: Jim Bowden in a while ago and he mentioned a
- 25:34Speaker 6: conversation that he had with Mason Miller. I want to
- 25:37Speaker 6: say a year and a half ago at the All
- 25:38Speaker 6: Star Game, where Mason Miller said he did not he's
- 25:40Speaker 6: done that before. He doesn't want to be a starter.
- 25:43Speaker 6: And of course you know that Robert Suarez he is.
- 25:45Speaker 6: He's was allowed to become a free agent. There was
- 25:48Speaker 6: a mutual option there, so the Padres don't have a
- 25:50Speaker 6: true closer. We thought at that time that Mason Miller
- 25:53Speaker 6: was brought into to be that guy. But if Mason
- 25:56Speaker 6: doesn't want to do it, then I don't know how
- 25:58Speaker 6: you you can't make him do it. But then again,
- 26:00Speaker 6: then again, Rubin Diebla is different. This is a different
- 26:03Speaker 6: situation than Mason Miller was with the Oakland A's or
- 26:07Speaker 6: the Sacramento A's or the Vegas A's or whatever they
- 26:09Speaker 6: call him in these days. It's a completely different situation.
- 26:12Speaker 6: So maybe if you're Rubin Diebla and you're a former
- 26:14Speaker 6: reliever of Craig Stammon who's now his manager, perhaps they
- 26:18Speaker 6: can they can convince him into it. But if not,
- 26:20Speaker 6: you can look at Adrian Morohane the idea of converting
- 26:23Speaker 6: him into a starting pitcher, or maybe it's going to
- 26:25Speaker 6: be David Morgan. But right now, right now, I wouldn't.
- 26:29Speaker 6: I thought Mason Miller at that time was brought in
- 26:31Speaker 6: to be the future for Robert Suarez, who's now a
- 26:34Speaker 6: free agent. So that's a good problem to have if
- 26:36Speaker 6: you're the Padres. I'm looking forward to seeing how convincing
- 26:39Speaker 6: Rubin Diebler and Craig Stammon can be in convincing him
- 26:42Speaker 6: that he has a future, a better future in the
- 26:45Speaker 6: rotation than the back of the bullpen. And one more
- 26:48Speaker 6: another point there, Todd. One thing that Adrea Peller has
- 26:52Speaker 6: done an incredible job of is finding all star relievers.
- 26:56Speaker 6: We know what Robert Suarez is and he was an
- 26:58Speaker 6: All Star this year, but don't forget Kirby Yates was
- 27:00Speaker 6: an All Star for the Padres as their closer back
- 27:03Speaker 6: in twenty nineteen. Before that, it was Brad Hand in
- 27:06Speaker 6: twenty seven twenty seventeen and twenty eighteen. That was during
- 27:10Speaker 6: an era though where the Padres could not afford to
- 27:13Speaker 6: pay their stars. They traded their all stars. But one
- 27:16Speaker 6: thing it tells me is an AJ Puller does not
- 27:19Speaker 6: have a problem when it comes to finding all star relievers.
- 27:24Speaker 4: Right. Well, your last point was first base. First base
- 27:28Speaker 4: is a need for San Diego, and they showed you
- 27:30Speaker 4: know what, we have Luisa Rise here last year, and
- 27:34Speaker 4: so we don't need off, We don't need a lot
- 27:37Speaker 4: of power from first base. The Padres is a team
- 27:41Speaker 4: need power. First base is the I mean, if your
- 27:44Speaker 4: rest of your team's not going to hit for power,
- 27:46Speaker 4: your first basement has to. Is there a chance because
- 27:49Speaker 4: of the payroll flexibility or inflexibility of their payroll that
- 27:54Speaker 4: they can bargain shop for home runs? Essentially, you need
- 27:57Speaker 4: if the Padres stick to where they're at, you need
- 28:00Speaker 4: about thirty home runs from first base. And that's not
- 28:04Speaker 4: happening under fifteen million million dollars a year on the
- 28:07Speaker 4: free agent market.
- 28:09Speaker 6: It's it's not going to happen. I almost feel like
- 28:11Speaker 6: part of their philosophy for last year, I mean, you
- 28:13Speaker 6: want to you want to get slug I think they
- 28:14Speaker 6: were expecting a lot more slug from their platinum glove
- 28:18Speaker 6: right fielder. And that's going to be interesting right there,
- 28:20Speaker 6: because what they said all along was, you know, if
- 28:22Speaker 6: we you can you can get a first basement, and
- 28:25Speaker 6: you can get you can survive with ten to fifteen
- 28:27Speaker 6: home runs if you're getting major slug from your outfielders.
- 28:30Speaker 6: And they didn't get that from Tatis last year. So
- 28:33Speaker 6: I don't know that we can expect the Padres to
- 28:35Speaker 6: be the market for like a p Alonso or something
- 28:37Speaker 6: like that. But we'll see what the market is for
- 28:39Speaker 6: a guy like Ryan on her And who was a
- 28:40Speaker 6: great hit in the a great fit in the Padres clubhouse.
- 28:44Speaker 6: But I with the way the payroll is right now
- 28:47Speaker 6: and you're pushing two hundred million dollars even though you
- 28:51Speaker 6: don't have your rotation set up, I don't know that
- 28:54Speaker 6: I'm expecting the Padres to spend a ton of money
- 28:56Speaker 6: when it comes to their first base. For their first baseman,
- 28:58Speaker 6: you're probably going to hope that you get a lot
- 29:00Speaker 6: more slug from Tatis, you know, maybe rebound from Fremti Machado.
- 29:05Speaker 6: Of course, Romon la Riano before he was injured, he
- 29:07Speaker 6: was slugging like crazy. So I don't know that the
- 29:10Speaker 6: Padres are going to be in the market for a
- 29:13Speaker 6: top hitting first basement. That's where you want your slug
- 29:16Speaker 6: but they just they haven't gotten it. Then again, they
- 29:18Speaker 6: haven't really gotten it consistently from the spots they were expecting.
- 29:22Speaker 6: This last season.
- 29:24Speaker 5: New manager Craig Stamon. You know, everybody was thinking like,
- 29:28Speaker 5: oh wow, look at this. It was kind of like
- 29:30Speaker 5: over there in the distance. Nobody really thought yeah. I mean,
- 29:33Speaker 5: I don't think anybody knew at the end of the day.
- 29:35Speaker 5: But hey, I'm not mad about it. I think this
- 29:38Speaker 5: is this is different. I think the baseball is different.
- 29:40Speaker 5: I like X players getting in in my faily. Look
- 29:43Speaker 5: at you laughing at that? Well, I love what. I
- 29:45Speaker 5: want to get your thoughts on that for one, But
- 29:47Speaker 5: for two, k, how do you think the players are
- 29:50Speaker 5: going to adjust to this and the new manager in Craig.
- 29:54Speaker 6: Todd, they're going to adjust a lot better than they
- 29:57Speaker 6: did with the previous first time managers all start with
- 30:00Speaker 6: the Andy Green era, and the Andy Green era was
- 30:02Speaker 6: different because he was not brought in to win. He
- 30:05Speaker 6: was brought in to be the bridge to when they
- 30:07Speaker 6: could start. You know, spending some money. He started off
- 30:09Speaker 6: his his Padres career with four rule five picks on
- 30:14Speaker 6: the opening day roster right and Jace Tandler, Jase tangler Man.
- 30:17Speaker 6: He was a good buddy of a j Peler from
- 30:20Speaker 6: their time in the Rangers. He didn't have a chance
- 30:22Speaker 6: because he didn't have a clubhouse that bought into him.
- 30:25Speaker 6: He never had a chance with guys like Eric Cosmer
- 30:27Speaker 6: and and Manny Machado and a young Tatis. This is
- 30:30Speaker 6: gonna be different though with Craig Stanmon, because number one,
- 30:33Speaker 6: he has a support of the guy that I keep
- 30:35Speaker 6: saying is the most important clubhouse guy on the Padres,
- 30:39Speaker 6: and that's Manny Machado. Manny Machado's Stammin said that he
- 30:42Speaker 6: heard Manny Machada right away and he was so excited
- 30:45Speaker 6: for the hire. And when when Craig Stammon was a
- 30:48Speaker 6: reliever of the Padres, he had he was so respected
- 30:52Speaker 6: he was he was you don't usually hear about like
- 30:55Speaker 6: a relief pitcher being a leader in that clubhouse, but
- 30:58Speaker 6: Craig Stanmon was was wildly popular in that clubhouse. He
- 31:02Speaker 6: was so respected. He's really respected by Manny Machado. I
- 31:06Speaker 6: think I think He told the story about how he
- 31:08Speaker 6: and and Manny would play cards on every single flight,
- 31:11Speaker 6: so he he has guys. I had Joe Musgrave on
- 31:14Speaker 6: my on my on one of my shows, Gosh the
- 31:17Speaker 6: day they may be the announcedmore the day that the
- 31:18Speaker 6: news came out, and he said, give this guy a chance.
- 31:22Speaker 6: That he's just give this guy a chance. I know
- 31:24Speaker 6: he's a first time manager. He's never been he's never
- 31:26Speaker 6: coached at any level. Players or fans fell in love
- 31:29Speaker 6: with the idea of Poop of Albert Poohols, who was
- 31:32Speaker 6: a Hall of Famer and one of the bigger stars
- 31:34Speaker 6: of in baseball history. But Craig Stamon knows the organization
- 31:39Speaker 6: in side out. He is a j Peller's trusted right
- 31:43Speaker 6: hand man. He knows a scouting system, he knows the
- 31:45Speaker 6: front office, he knows the organization. He's not going to
- 31:49Speaker 6: be new, so I think he's going to bring instant
- 31:51Speaker 6: respect inside that clubhouse. It's going to be different than
- 31:54Speaker 6: it was for Andy Green, for for a Jase Tingler,
- 31:59Speaker 6: and even Mike Schilt who had to really go out
- 32:01Speaker 6: of his way when he was hired by the Padres
- 32:04Speaker 6: two years ago and shil went on tour, he went
- 32:07Speaker 6: to the Dominican Republic, he went to Miami, he went
- 32:10Speaker 6: everywhere to get to know these guys and let them know, Listen,
- 32:13Speaker 6: I've never played or coach, this is who I am.
- 32:15Speaker 6: The difference that Craig Stalmon has is a good portion
- 32:18Speaker 6: of the guys in that clubhouse, the leaders, the the
- 32:21Speaker 6: key Coggs, the Tatis, the Mannies and Joe Muskrove, they
- 32:25Speaker 6: know who Craig Stalmon is and AJ Prowler knows who
- 32:29Speaker 6: he is, and that gives him a very big advantage.
- 32:32Speaker 5: All right.
- 32:33Speaker 4: Twenty twenty two, the Padres were Bryce Harper away from
- 32:36Speaker 4: making the World Series. Twenty three. They did not make
- 32:38Speaker 4: the World Series twenty four. They were one game and
- 32:42Speaker 4: one throw into the dugout away from Manny Machado going
- 32:46Speaker 4: to the World Series. Same, same old, same old. Is
- 32:51Speaker 4: this successful for the Padre for Aj Perewler, who you
- 32:54Speaker 4: want to get extended and the Padres fans who absolutely
- 32:59Speaker 4: clam for this team and they love being in this environment.
- 33:03Speaker 4: If they just keep making the playoffs and not finishing
- 33:07Speaker 4: the job, because this is clearly the team, they need
- 33:11Speaker 4: to make a splash. Will they make a splash this
- 33:14Speaker 4: offseason to push it forward or are they just going
- 33:17Speaker 4: to continue to hope and pray that something goes their
- 33:20Speaker 4: way when they make the playoffs.
- 33:22Speaker 6: I think there's a bit. I think give a great
- 33:24Speaker 6: point there, there was a bit of a disc I
- 33:25Speaker 6: think Padres funds are a bit disgruntled right now because
- 33:28Speaker 6: they are seeing the separation. You want to have a
- 33:31Speaker 6: you want to have a deep playoff run, and I
- 33:34Speaker 6: don't know there was really that belief that the Padres
- 33:36Speaker 6: were going to make a deep playoff run. This gosh,
- 33:39Speaker 6: this in twenty twenty five because of the state of
- 33:42Speaker 6: the pitching staff. That was a big issue when they
- 33:45Speaker 6: didn't know what was going to happen with Michael King
- 33:47Speaker 6: or his health. Dylan Sees was not Dylan Cees and
- 33:50Speaker 6: the Padres don't have that guy. So I think I
- 33:52Speaker 6: think there's a lot of unease with Padres founds because
- 33:55Speaker 6: you want to see your team getting better and better.
- 33:57Speaker 6: We saw what the Dodgers did, which is the last
- 33:59Speaker 6: thing you want if you're a Padre's fan, and they
- 34:01Speaker 6: have they have deep they have deep pocketbooks.
- 34:04Speaker 1: So sorry, sorry, my nephew is here, so I don't so, I.
- 34:12Speaker 6: Just I just think that right now there is an
- 34:14Speaker 6: ease because I think again the the pal of ownership
- 34:17Speaker 6: is a big deal. Padres fans have gone through this
- 34:19Speaker 6: before with the with the team being sold and the
- 34:22Speaker 6: wild uncertainty left. There's a small feeling that last year
- 34:26Speaker 6: was was kind of the last their last best chance,
- 34:29Speaker 6: that was their window, right because you it was you
- 34:32Speaker 6: had Dylan Cees, and you had Michael King and and
- 34:35Speaker 6: you have Manny Machada was like in his prime. So
- 34:37Speaker 6: they're getting older and they have less pitching. So I
- 34:41Speaker 6: don't know that Padres fans are filling it, and I
- 34:43Speaker 6: don't know that they think that they can make a
- 34:44Speaker 6: deep splash because of the uncertainty around the ownership. One
- 34:48Speaker 6: thing that Padre's CEO Air Groupner said at the pressor
- 34:51Speaker 6: for Greig Stammon was he expects that they're going to
- 34:54Speaker 6: it's going to be business as usual and they will
- 34:56Speaker 6: still hold a top ten table. But a lot of
- 34:59Speaker 6: those commitments are the players they have already under contract,
- 35:03Speaker 6: Manny Machado, Tatis Bogarts, They're gonna make but over one
- 35:06Speaker 6: hundred million dollars combine from twenty from twenty twenty seven on.
- 35:10Speaker 6: So I don't know that there's a there's a true
- 35:12Speaker 6: belief that the Padres can spend the way they did
- 35:16Speaker 6: when they under Peter Seidler, especially when it seems like
- 35:20Speaker 6: a sale is imminent.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Oh, Marty, this was great stuff, and we're excited to
- 35:25Speaker 1: have you for more of these conversations. But also make
- 35:28Speaker 1: sure you let your nephew know if you get in
- 35:30Speaker 1: the shot, there's a risk that he too has to
- 35:32Speaker 1: join the Foul Territory network. So you can play that
- 35:34Speaker 1: out for next time. I say, okay, but be careful
- 35:37Speaker 1: you take one more step, you might have to appear
- 35:39Speaker 1: on foul Territory more frequent.
- 35:41Speaker 6: Okay, just so you know, though, his questions are only
- 35:44Speaker 6: about Jackson Merrill. So that's that's where he can that's
- 35:47Speaker 6: the depth of his knowledge when it comes to the
- 35:48Speaker 6: Padres fans. And by the way, he picked a pretty
- 35:51Speaker 6: good player. I'll tell you one more thing if you
- 35:53Speaker 6: guys don't mind. If there's one thing that you feel
- 35:55Speaker 6: better about for twenty twenty six, is that Jackson Merrill.
- 35:59Speaker 6: He's on his way, man, and he was he had
- 36:01Speaker 6: He suffered through multiple injuries last year with a concussion
- 36:05Speaker 6: with the hamstring. I am really looking forward to Jackson
- 36:08Speaker 6: Merrill being full strength, because that key is an absolute
- 36:12Speaker 6: difference maker. So despite some of the losses the Padres have,
- 36:15Speaker 6: the guys who are leaving in free agency, you get it.
- 36:18Speaker 6: You get a healthy Jackson Merrill for most of that
- 36:21Speaker 6: regular season. That to me is a that's a game changer.
- 36:25Speaker 1: I agree, that would be a big, big change if
- 36:27Speaker 1: you get the twenty twenty four version of Jackson Merrill
- 36:30Speaker 1: versus the twenty twenty five.
- 36:31Speaker 2: I'm with you.
- 36:32Speaker 1: Your nephew can be our Jackson Merrill specialist. Right for
- 36:36Speaker 1: more on.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Jackson Merrill, let's get sug Yes, it's a little neft,
- 36:39Speaker 2: but good stuff. Marty. This was great. Really appreciate it
- 36:42Speaker 2: and we'll talk to you soon.
- 36:43Speaker 6: Okay, great, thanks guys, I'm great week
