- Glenn Ordway: All right, here we go with another episode of the Big O podcast and of course weekly you know who joins us, the big fella, Pete the Meat Shepherd. Hello, Petey, how are we this week? Pete Sheppard: Hello, fantastic. the hurricane missed us here in Fort Myers, but of course they got up in the panhandle, so our friends up there wishing them well. But the good news is the Georgia Alabama game did not get canceled. Glenn Ordway: It did not get canceled. But but they but they moved all the pregame festivities indoors. Okay. They had to do yeah, they had yeah. Pete Sheppard: They did, but I don't care about that 'cause I don't turn it on till two minutes before the game anyway. And there was plenty it was certainly plenty to watch in college football over the weekend. I know we'll get into it in a little bit. It was I was glued. I had a charity golf tournament to play in on Saturday. We only got in twelve holes before a big gigantic thunderstorm hit. Fine with me. I got home just in time for three o'clock, three thirty kickoff. So it was a and it was the day out of work. It was a great day. Glenn Ordway: We are actually going to mention college football a little bit later on, only because I think people in New England would be shocked as to my interest in college football, because I think they remember when I didn't give a shit about college football. College football. But let's start with what really Pete Sheppard: Mind blown, Glenn, for you. Mind blown. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: matters to people in Boston and in New England, and that is Drake May has returned. The real Drake May, number 10. He is now back out there. And I said this a couple weeks ago. I don't think I overreacted to any of it. there were some people that overreacted, wanted backup quarterbacks and others. I did not. I thought it was a loss of confidence, and I completely believe that 100% right now, Pete, that he had lost all confidence in himself, maybe his receivers, maybe his offensive line. And it made him a puddle. And now to see it last week, and there was a lot of pressure last week on him. by the Buffalo defense. He was able to do a lot of good things. A few things rattled him a little bit. This week he got phenomenal performance from his offensive line. There were two pressures in the first half. That was it. That was it. So he was Pete Sheppard: What's left of it? Yeah. Glenn Ordway: clean back in the pocket. And he he joked about this. You know, I could go back there and have a ham sandwich in the time that I had in the pocket. And I think that gave him tremendous confidence that To okay, now I can go through my progressions. Now I can look and find some other people. And that's what he did. Pete distributed the football yesterday. Pete Sheppard: Only nine receivers with catches. Only nine. Glenn Ordway: There you go. Pete Sheppard: Not been not bad at all. Yeah, look, and I think we both sort of had this I did not want to overreact after the first four weeks of the season because I know we've seen it too many times. You know, we always remember Bill's call. We're on we're on to Cincinnati. We're on to Cincinnati. That's after they got manhandled, I think that was week three back then or or week four in Kansas City. Yeah, man Glenn Ordway: In Kansas City, yeah. So Monday night came too, I believe. Pete Sheppard: manhandled. And he's like and then the next week there was a Sunday night game. And after the first series, I'll I remember Chris Collinsworth, who I sort of like, but I remember him saying first series is like, boy, this is gonna be different tonight. The Bengals better be the Bengals are gonna be some serious. That was like after like four plays, five plays into the game. Look, I I never thought he he lost confidence I thought he was making bad decisions, a lot of bad decisions. I yes there was a little op there there was a confidence decline, I think, but I think it's because it didn't nobody played together for in the preseason. I think that had a lot to do with it. And clearly he was AFC he was AFC offensive player of the week last week. He's gonna be player of the week this week. There's no Glenn Ordway: Should be. Pete Sheppard: question about it. Four touchdowns, including a rushing touchdown as well. And patting myself on the because somebody, Josh, heard Glenn Ordway: Go ahead, go ahead, go ahead. Pete Sheppard: me about Kyle Williams and getting him involved. And we had a text conversation, and what you said is absolutely right. But he needed that. And you know what was excellent about the Kyle Williams thing, 'cause he got a penalty right before his first big catch. And then they weren't they weren't but he was he was he was distraught and and McDaniel went up to him and said something to him. It was like either one play in between, then he caught a big pass. He was an integral part of that that game yesterday. If he can continue to do that with the right with the right matchups, and I'm not saying he's gonna get that every week, but certainly the the Patriots found a way to Get him out there, get him involved, other than two targets like he had previously the first several games. So I think that's going to be huge. Keep losing on offense and defense, but the confidence is absolutely back. One hundred percent in Drake May. I I gotta I think coaching has a lot to do with that. And again, my favorite non touchdown play yesterday, I'm sure it was yours as well, was the Chisholm lateral. Now I Glenn Ordway: Yes. Pete Sheppard: still don't know, and I didn't hear of Rabel's postgame. Maybe you did. I still don't know if Glenn Ordway: The Pete Sheppard: I didn't think myself and Trent Green, who was doing the game yesterday with Kevin Harlan, I said it when I was watching it that that was not a design play. He came up with that. I could be wrong. He may it may have been design play. Glenn Ordway: They said n no, they're saying it was not a design play, and I'm disagreeing with you. I think Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: it is a design play, and I think that th that these young players are fearful of kind of giving out the secrets to the to the media right now. I think it was a design play. Now they're saying it's not. Yeah. Right. Pete Sheppard: Well, it it was a b I mean, it's a hook and lateral type of play, but it was a you don't see that type of hook and it was it was a little off the cuff. I I don't know. y you might be right. It might have been designed but Glenn Ordway: Well that's that's that's the the the whole idea of it. You you need to sell it. You need to be an actor. You need to make it look real when you know it's all staged. Pete Sheppard: Yep. Yeah, but like we all remember the Miami San Diego playoff game many years ago, one of the greatest playoff games in the history of the NFL. And that hook and lateral with the Dolphins, that was a design, that was a design play. This Glenn Ordway: Yeah. Right. Pete Sheppard: one looked a little unorthodox, but I'll I'll take it. I I I thought it was great instincts by Chisholm. Glenn Ordway: Well, y yes, and you're right. And getting back to to Drake May, I'm thoroughly convinced, especially at his age, having so much success early on in his career, that he was just struggling with a confidence factor. And when you bring up the preseason, that could be a factor, Pete, but nobody in the league plays in the preseason. So you can say that about any quarterback, about any team right now. They're not getting the reps, they're not ready. And I think we said that for years. The first three, four, five games are difficult because nobody plays a lot. Now they don't play at all in the preseason. But I but I want to get to to Kyle Williams. You brought up a good point in our text exchange yesterday. You know, you were excited that it was a you know coming out party for him. And Pete Sheppard: Yeah, I'm hoping. Glenn Ordway: I'm not gonna knock it because I I think you just said it right. He needed this. Talk about a confidence boost. He needed a couple of big plays. My only issue with Kyle Williams is I think what you saw yesterday was the one skill that he brings to the table that is exceptional. And that is if we're talking about speed from point A to point B, okay? He's unbelievable how fast he is. And he can beat a corner, even a safety coming up over the top. He can beat them in a foot race. Once he gets on the backside, and you and I talked about this last week, he's gone. That's why he W usually scores touchdowns with those those passes. What worries me is when Drake May is back there in the pocket and he needs an adjustment now with Kyle Williams because the safety has come up. Move, kid, get over here. He Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: doesn't seem to know what to do at that point. Now maybe he's only his second year. So maybe we need to give him some slack here. Maybe through coaching, he can pick this stuff up. But as a burner beating a a corner Down the field in a straight route, my God. He's gonna beat him every single time, Pete. He's got lightning quick speed. Pete Sheppard: And when you have a quarterback with absolute ninety-nine point nine percent precision, every he might have thrown out of yesterday, he threw exact he he threw 34 passes. I think I counted one, maybe two, that I said, I probably shouldn't have it was a bad throw. He was unbelievable. Those every single throw was right on the money. I I and Trent Green was orgasmic back there, listening, you know, watching him. It really was unbelievable. You would never Glenn Ordway: I can only imagine how orgasmic you were on your couch. Yeah. Pete Sheppard: Do what? Glenn Ordway: How orgasmic you were on your couch. I can only imagine. Pete Sheppard: I know and I had you know I had to work so I couldn't have any cocktails and everything else. So you know I I No, it's no it's fine. It was fine. It went by it went Glenn Ordway: that must have been a bad day for you. Work and no cocktails. Wow. Pete Sheppard: by went by f fast. I mean it's it's it's probably the it's probably one of the first times in a long time that I haven't been with a bunch of friends watching a game. Just me and my wife for a for a a little while and then I I went to work about with about ten minutes left in the game. But I have YouTube TV. I had it on in the car while I was driving to work. Glenn Ordway: y YouTube TV's great. Pete Sheppard: But by then it was 45 Glenn Ordway: Take it anywhere. Pete Sheppard: to 17. It was just what a what an absolute dismantling with four s two starting cornerbacks out, four four D backs out in the game. They continued to lose players during the game again. And they just they put them pretty much didn't Glenn Ordway: Well the Campbell the Campbell Pete Sheppard: miss a beat. Ex when Campbell went down the first play, Crosby came in and I think got a sack. After that, that really all I mean, they talk about next man up, they really didn't miss a beat. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: No, the kid Caleb Lom yeah, the kid Caleb Lomo was terrific. You didn't hear his name during the course of the afternoon. And I said this to you before. The the Raider defense did not concern me. Now Max Crosby always concerns me, and he seems to have a little bit more motivation. If you remember, they tried to trade him to the to the Ravens and then wink wink he failed the f failed the physical and I Pete Sheppard: Yeah. The medical issue, yeah. Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: mean all that shit that went on. You know, he's motivated. He was off to a terrific start this year. But the rest of their defense is not really good. They rely totally on turning the ball over. And in this case, Drake May had great ball security, right? So if they can't turn the ball over, then the Raiders have difficulty. But I would say this with the two corners, two starting corners down, you didn't have to worry as much about the wide receivers for the Raiders, but you did have to worry about Bowers. And he got off to a good start. I sat there and said to myself, this guy's gonna end up with ten or eleven receptions, but they seemed to keep the ball away from him as the game progressed on. They did. Pete Sheppard: well yeah, and I mean that some look, he I put him on my fantasy team yesterday 'cause I knew he'd he'd be the guy. what I d I didn't expect him to shut down everybody else, and certainly they shut down Genty. Now shutting him down and after the Patriots get out to a couple score lead, and then when it was twenty eight seven, you knew that the majority of the plays call were gonna be throwing the bro, throwing the football. But nevertheless, Glenn Ordway: Not not running anymore. Right. Pete Sheppard: still I thought it'll be a high scoring game yesterday. I I I thought the Patriots would win Glenn Ordway: Me too. Pete Sheppard: like 30 to 27, something like that. I did Glenn Ordway: Yep, that's what I thought. Pete Sheppard: not I did not expect forty-five to seventeen, but I mean the first series, three and out for the Raiders. First series. And I was like, whoa, this is fantastic. And it just got better. It just got better Glenn Ordway: No, you you're you're right that Pete Sheppard: from there. Glenn Ordway: yeah, and you know, I know some people don't think much of Kirk Cousins, but he is a competent quarterback in that league. A competent Pete Sheppard: Yes. Yes, he is. Glenn Ordway: veteran quarterback. He doesn't make an awful lot of mistakes, turnovers in the in the course of of a game. I don't Pete Sheppard: He's no Jalen Daniels, he loves he knows clock management. That the dumbest thing. Glenn Ordway: Right. my God. Clock management clock management in the National Football League this past weekend was an embarrassment. I mean Pete Sheppard: The the the the commanders, that that whole thing. That's a whole Glenn Ordway: Or how do you Pete Sheppard: we could spend three hours on stupidity. It's it's there's no excuse. I I mean, I I just laugh my heart. Thank God I didn't have any shekels on that game. one way or the other. But God, what a joke. Glenn Ordway: But I but I but I do believe that the two things that were a plus for Drake May, because you just talked about how accurate he was yesterday. He was exceptionally accurate Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: in that game. But we must remember those seven games in which he was not accurate at all. And so it's not athletic ability, it's not throwing that ball deep and and finding the fingertips of of the receiver. It's all up here with him. Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: So and I don't know, it might happen again. There might be Pete Sheppard: But I think it's all connected too, right? I mean it's all connected. Yeah, the the symmetry with the receivers. Glenn Ordway: Well your head's connected to everything, Pete. I mean, all of the mistakes you've ever made in in life and in a future podcast we will actually feature the top Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: ten. All of them have been committed because of in between your ears. There's no question about it. Pete Sheppard: You can't really make a mistake in a podcast anymore, can you? 'Cause there's nobody what do you what's a what's a mistake? And you know? Glenn Ordway: Probably not. A mistake's probably an advantage. You know, when you make a mistake, it's probably pretty good. Probably works better for the for the audience. Pete Sheppard: Calling some of these blowhards up at EI and ninety eight five, bunch of fucking idiots, you know, that's some of the takes that they have. Hey, Glenn Ordway: There he goes. Pete Sheppard: come at me anytime. Some of you people belong in an asylum, I'll tell ya that. Glenn Ordway: there he goes. Pete Sheppard: Let's do clickbait. Let's go so Glenn Ordway: Well Pete Sheppard: off the chart and talk about how a quarterback is only who who did I hear one knucklehead about it looked like a Zaverian high school quarterback I mean get shut up. Shut up Mark Dendero. Get the I mean what I mean, come on, man. Come on. Grow up. Grow up with that Glenn Ordway: that was that was Dondero. Mark Mark Dondero. I I saw that clip on Twitter. Yeah. Well Pete Sheppard: shit. Glenn Ordway: Okay, so I hear what you're saying. And you and I both have gotten away from the business somewhat. Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: So I was away for, you know, over four years. You were away for a while, you came back doing did a national show and now Pete Sheppard: I'd have you on all my shows, all the shows that I did, I'd have you on occasionally. I didn't want to bother you all the time, but at least once a month, I think you'd come on. Yeah. It was only the time difference. Is Glenn Ordway: No, we were I I loved going on with you 'cause we could you know, we're old friends. Yeah. Pete Sheppard: the time difference sucked because I was, you know, I was doing three hours of a podcast, which was a mistake. I should have done less than three. That was the one mistake. Glenn Ordway: You should have done those. Yeah, three hours is Pete Sheppard: And Angel was great and what I did. we had we had good shows. It just it we could have probably done an hour and a half. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: No, they were fun. They every time I was on, we had a blast. So I want to go on that point that you just made. And so maybe I'm defending some of these talk show hosts a little bit because when I was in the daily grind and you're doing four hours a day, you're doing five days a week, you're sitting there and you're picking the carcass apart. Okay. You're looking for every little scab. And most of it is way over the top. Most of it is really. Searching for shit that really is not a big deal. All right. And I admit it. I no, I've done it. I did. Pete Sheppard: Yeah, but you didn't do that. You didn't do that. you die, not but you did it on sort of you would, you know, be the you know, Senator Palpatine, you know, from Star Wars. You would be you want to play it both ways, you know. You're the emperor. You're trying to you're Glenn Ordway: Well, because there's Pete Sheppard: trying to get the war to start. And you did a great job at it. But I don't think you should say stuff like, he's a Severian high school quarterback. They're running high school plays. That Glenn Ordway: No. No. Pete Sheppard: that stuff is so over the top. It's just stupid. It's outrageous. It's inaccurate. It's salacious, contagious, outrageous. you you didn't do stuff like you didn't do that, that kind Glenn Ordway: It's all of the above. No. Pete Sheppard: of extreme shit. Glenn Ordway: No, but I think I was constantly looking for some gray, because you can't have all black and white. There's there's gray in between. But I do believe that you're almost forced to do some stuff that really doesn't mean diddly. And you do it because you've gotta fill you gotta fill you gotta fill the hours, Pete. That's why people do it. Pete Sheppard: Yeah, yeah, but you know what, Glenn? It's gotten it's gotten bad. I I don't I understand that, but there was ways of doing it without doing it like that. You know, and especially if you have another if you have another co host, some of these people that go solo and, you know, just carry on about, you know, try they try to try to come up with the gray area. They try to and there's there's not Glenn Ordway: So you bring it you bring in Colin Cowherd into the into the conversation, I can say. That's exactly what he does. He talk about Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: outrageous stuff. He will throw stuff against the wall, but here's the biggest problem I have with Colin Cowherd, because I think he's really good at what he does and he's Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: an entertainer and he's been very successful and he can, you know, talk forever about anything. Okay. He he Pete Sheppard: Yeah. No, he's not down he's not down here on that, you know, before the show he's down here on yeah, Nash. No, no. Glenn Ordway: He's everywhere in the country, he's all over the country. But now, Boston people don't listen to any national shows, you know. New York doesn't much, Philly, because there's so much going on, you know, locally, Pete Sheppard: Yep. Philly. Yep. Chicago. Yep. Glenn Ordway: you don't need to. But the biggest problem Cowherd has is that he gets exposed because in this day and age with social media media, once you come up with an outrageous opinion, and then you're wrong because you had the wrong team or you had the wrong schedule. I mean, the simplest thing he does Pete Sheppard: Which he does a lot, he does a lot. Glenn Ordway: it a lot, you get exposed. And I don't mind anybody. I want talk show hosts to have opinions. I don't want a guy to be a wallflower. I want a guy to get out there, really have opinions. But man, you better do your research. And it's easy doing research right now. Got this little Google machine. Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: Okay. You got AI. You've got a million different ways in which you can go and research a topic. And take any idiotic position you want. Bringing up Zaverian high school is probably a little childish, and that probably doesn't fulfill all I did my research now, and I can attack you with what you're saying. But I do believe you're right that people went overboard. My son did. My son was I was arguing with him. we did it on the on the the Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: podcast and we did it privately. He said they gotta set him down. They gotta set I said, Sam, the worst thing you can possibly do. Is sit him down. He's 23, 24 years old. How is he going to react to that? The coaches know him now. They've been around him long enough. Now they're gonna prod him and now they're gonna figure this all out. And I said, if you remember, and I said it with you, the best thing you could do with May is say, Hey, we're going to Buffalo. Remember last year when we went to went to Buffalo and you fixed yourself and you fixed our team and we had that great success? Let's go back and do that again. Now maybe they did Pete Sheppard: Well well let let's take a couple steps. Glenn Ordway: some of that. Pete Sheppard: Let's take a top c I'm the one who said to you the best thing I think is that they are playing in Buffalo against that team this week again instead of some shit team, you know, like like Tennessee or Miami. But but because I I said but Glenn Ordway: That's not that's not that's not true. You you you said you said if if his wife bakes him like a dozen chocolate chip cookies, okay, and they do a little video with it, then you know, all will be good in the world and he'll be fine again. That's what you said. Pete Sheppard: That's that's not what you said, but what I said. No, I really thought playing that team that week on the road was the best thing that could have happened. Cause he Glenn Ordway: You did. Pete Sheppard: if he if he had done okay and played decent this say against Miami, which is totally a joke of an organization, then it w it wouldn't have been the same. This was this was different. I think it's completely helped. Turned it around. I'm sure Josh McDaniel and Mike Vrabel helped a lot and it's just it's just carried over and now I I'd be I'd be stunned if there was any type of regression. That's not gonna say he's gonna have games like this every week. I would Glenn Ordway: Well w yeah. Pete Sheppard: be stunned if there's gonna be a con let's let me rephrase a consistent regression. Is can they win ugly? Yes. is he gonna have games like the last two? Probably not every week, but I'm saying I I will be very, very surprised if he starts to go downhill again. And then I don't think it's gonna be I don't think it's gonna be a season of peaks and valleys. Glenn Ordway: Well, Pete Sheppard: He may have a couple of throws and a couple of games where you know, th he deserves criticism, but I I don't think we're gonna see what we saw like against Jacksonville, that type of a game. Glenn Ordway: I don't think you're going to see it for a prolonged period of time, six or seven games. He's gonna face some defenses that are gonna give him a lot more pressure than what he got with the Raiders, okay? So it and and I really believe that the offensive line did such a tremendous job in that game that especially in that first half, if you look at the first half, and I went back and and watched the deal this morning again, second time, Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: I said to myself, my God, he's got forever back there. And usually When they start rushing, that's when he has to get out of that pocket a little bit. And that's when he's trying to figure out am I running? Am I throwing? Am I throwing in a run? What am I doing? And he did none of that, had to do none of that in that game. And the offensive line held up. And even when Campbell went down, they they were fine. Now, you're not going to get that every single week, Pete, because you're going to get much better defenses than what you saw in that game. But I agree with you. I don't think we're going to see it. For long periods of time. And I think once you start getting your full complement of receivers back, it's going to work out a lot better. Cause if you were to look, if we were to look at the beginning of the season and we would have looked what the depth chart is at wide receiver right now and said, no AJ Brown, no Hollands, and you looked at Pop Douglas as being a guy that you need to depend on, I don't think any of us would have looked at it and said, this is going to be an easy, you know, day for for Drake May. But he spread it out. Found everybody, got Henry heavily involved once again. That became kind of his a binky in all of this. Yes, right. Pete Sheppard: Got the back up tight end rared in catching five catches, you know. There's I bet how many people even know who he is? Yeah, very very good play Glenn Ordway: Notre Dame, yeah, and Pete Sheppard: very good. I hate to say it 'cause I hate Notre Dame, I mean very good, excellent player. Glenn Ordway: Yeah, well I think the concern with him is can he block? You know, we know he likes to catch the ball, can he block? And and Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: that's what you're getting with a lot of these young players. They come to the NFL and they're good in one skill set. It's the other skill sets that you you have to be worried about. So that's Yes. Yes. Pete Sheppard: And Stevenson was a beast yesterday, especially Henderson got hurt. Stevenson was out. He was carrying four or five guys at times, it seemed. And Glenn Ordway: Yep. Did did did drop did drop the ball. Yeah. Pete Sheppard: handing ha hanging on to the football. Kinner's the one that that fumbled, yeah. Glenn Ordway: Yeah. No, listen, you g you got a lot of there's a lot to look at yesterday and you know, check some boxes off and Elijah Ponder continues to to play well. We're seeing, you know, a player that's developing there. I mean, you're seeing a lot of you're really good stuff out there. Now, not to say that th this is gonna be easy the rest of the way. N not in that league. Not in that league. Pete Sheppard: Nothing's nothing's easy. Look at the league. I how how many I I gotta say it every week. Look at there is no easy games. If you think something's easy, I mean maybe the easy maybe it was Houston over Tennessee. They would do. And Cam Ward, my buddy, I feel so bad. He's just a horrible, horrible organization. maybe maybe Tennessee, that maybe that game was the only real horrible, horrible game. Bears were were pathetic yesterday against the Green Bay as well. But Glenn Ordway: I hold on, Pete. I thought they coached the was an offensive genius. Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: And then at after the first game this season, I was told by some so called NFL experts, the Bears may be the first team to average fifty two points a week in the National Football League. Remember that? Remember that? And then the very next week they scored three. The very next Pete Sheppard: Again, it's so stupid because you see one game. Yeah, of course not. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: week. Pete Sheppard: And they may very well score 40 next week. I don't know. It is it is unpredictable. I'm sorry. Just to sit here and try to pick although I did have a nice five. I had a five and one day yesterday. I will say I had a five and one day yesterday. It was pretty good. But Glenn Ordway: That's why they call it betting, Pete. That's why they call it betting. You never know. Well, a lot of the dog a lot of dogs now on the road, right? Are are are winning. Is that what's happening here? Is there a trend? Pete Sheppard: yeah, well I mean, yeah, like Baltimore last night. I had the Ravens last night plus three and a half. And that was I mean, it was it was a great game. it but that it started yesterday with you know the Jacksonville game. And that in you know on the the Jacksonville Eagles game. my god. Glenn Ordway: that was another bizarre game. Talk about a coaching decision. my God. Pete Sheppard: But I had I mean one second, you know, firstly, how can they put that one second on? But the knee was down, it was one second. Glenn Ordway: Pete, Pete, we have now had two pro games and one college game in which Pete Sheppard: Yep. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: one second has been added on and they have that team that got the one second has won all three of those games. Pete Sheppard: Yeah, but only that, Glenn, but the the time remaining was only like eight or nine seconds in all three games. You know? So if they Glenn Ordway: Correct. Correct. Pete Sheppard: if they squib kick, you know, and maybe that takes up, you know, all it's gonna do is take Glenn Ordway: Clark Clark is out. We run the clock out. Pete Sheppard: like a couple of seconds. Yeah, one, I forget what game was it, the guy they didn't want to kick it out of they didn't want to kick it because he had kicked out of you know, he had kicked it out of bounds twice. So they I don't know, it's it's unbelievable. This this is historic stuff that has never happened before in the NFL. Glenn Ordway: Yeah, I've never seen anything like that before. I mean, we were amazed when Kansas City came back in the playoff game against Buffalo with thirteen seconds, if you remember, and came back and and won that game. And you look at that game yesterday, and there is no way you couldn't find any better in America that would sit there and say, I tell you what, will you go the other way? Will you will you will you take Jacksonville in this game? Got one second left, and you're kicking the ball off to them. Will you take Nobody would have taken that bet. Nobody. Not a single person. I don't care what the odds were, you would have taken it. Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: And because you would think they're gonna kick it out of the end zone, right? They're gonna put them on the 35. They've got to go quite a distance, and there'll only be a couple seconds. You're not gonna have any time. Exactly. Right. And they're gonna run the clock off. Right. So Pete Sheppard: Yeah, hope for a PI call or a defensive holding or something. Yeah, on a on a play. But you just mentioned Yep. You just mentioned the Buffalo, Kansas City comeback. And I was it's it's amazing. The other n last night or early this morning when I got home from work. And happened to be flipping through some stuff. And I came upon one of my I cause I I was looking for I thought you and your son might have done a podcast, and then I saw that you didn't. But I some of my old stuff popped up from last year or from two years ago. And Highlights of that Buffalo, Kansas City game. That was the Glenn Ordway: Crazy. Back and forth. Pete Sheppard: most horrific refereeing I have ever seen in my life. If you were Glenn Ordway: Pretty bad. Pete Sheppard: there were like five calls that were so egregious that went against Buffalo. Horrible, horrible, horrible calls, including that spot, the spotting of the football. And it did look fixed. That's the first time in my life I actually thought it looked fixed. But anyway, we digress. But back to Glenn Ordway: Well, you you mentioned that I I did go away this weekend. I was in Los Angeles for the the weekend and long weekend, and so we did not do the podcast last night. But I will tell you something that you will laugh at at me now because you used to laugh at me years ago, Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: and that was you had a love for college football. So Pete would watch every college football game during the course of the weekend, probably had a few bucks on a few of those games, by the way. But he Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: would come in on Monday. And he would sit there and it was Patriots Monday and he would say, Yeah, did you see the Ohio State game? And we're all, I'm looking at him like, you know, what we talking about. This is a pro Pete Sheppard: My hurricanes Glenn Ordway: this is a pro town. What are you talking about? And in all of the years that I was doing sports talk radio, I would watch, you know, playoff games. I would watch a few bowl games, but I would not religiously, like you did, watch college football on Saturdays. I just wouldn't do it because It was one day I kind of could get away from it. And we were working six days a week at the time because we were in Foxborough on on Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Yeah, during football season. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: on Sunday. So it was just a time restraint thing constraint thing for me, Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: in that I only had so much time to watch that's a good point. You had but you had dogs that were as needy as kids, as needy as some kids. Pete Sheppard: Well you had kids and everything I didn't, you know, I d and that's a bit that's a big factor. I duh I d I had I had dogs and some ex wives, but other than that, it was Glenn Ordway: Out of the Boston area, though we're back a lot. We go back and forth, Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: but we're in Arizona for a a good portion of the year because I hate to tell you people, but the weather's a little bit better. And it is a college football and basketball hotbed. Okay. Everybody's into it. So you develop friends out here, which I did, and we go out to dinner, and what do they talk about? Hey, what about Arizona State this weekend? They are Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: into it. So I suddenly got into college football and into college basketball. Now, i in all fairness, Pete, I have a lot of free time, as I mentioned when I started this podcast. And I did. I apologize. I Pete Sheppard: You used to poo-poo college basketball. You used to crap all over it. And it was a mis especially in New England because, and because, you know, I grew up around the Providence College Friars. My dad went there. I met Dave Gavett when I was six years old. My first game, wonderful man. One of one of one of my one of Glenn Ordway: Wonderful man, by the way. A wonderful we're gonna do some stories down the road on Dave Gavin. Yep. Pete Sheppard: I met him when I was six years old. My first game ever was in 1973 to watch Ernie D. Marvin Barnes, Kevin Stakem, and company, the final four team. Glenn Ordway: Did Marvin bring the tire iron with him to the game? this was okay. Pete Sheppard: this was later on. yeah. I remember when I found that was a few weeks later and you know I'm I was only six years old. I remember hearing my dad talking about it at some family function with my uncle. And I was like, first of all, I was like, What's a ti I'm six? What's what's a tire iron? You know. But Glenn Ordway: That's how you hurt another individual, Pete. Pete Sheppard: but yeah, but anyway, but my first game was Providence College Assumption back in the day. It sold in back then back then, Assumption and Stonehill were very good. Not Division I team, but they were they were really good, Division II teams. That but then it was you know Providence Holy Cross was just as big to me as Red Sox Yankees a lot of the way. First time I ever heard my mother curse, ever. She never F-bombed, ever. Ever, ever, ever. Might swore, might have sworn an Italian, my great late great mom Lucia. The first time I ever heard her curse was during Kevin St during a PC Holy Cross game. She was upstairs, I was downstairs, or it was in Worcester. And all I heard was, you fucking son of a bitch. I went, Yeah. And I'm I'm like at Glenn Ordway: Who was it directed at? Pete Sheppard: at at Holy Cross at Ronnie Perry Sr. Ron Perry Sr. And I'll never forget it. And they're very nice man, both the Nis. But yeah. Glenn Ordway: Another nice man, by the way. I says sorry your mother didn't think so. Pete Sheppard: And it was such a and I and my and I'm telling what and my my mother goes, my father goes, Lucy, we can hear you. I swear to God, that is you can't make it up. I'm telling and it's and and and the great lake great Chris Clark is doing the game on channel 10 back in the day. The void huge big big Providence College guy. Glenn Ordway: yes. I remember him. He was a big T V sports guy in in Rhode Island. Pete Sheppard: Yeah, the the seven in fact the 73 team, like the the Celtics get had that stop and shop record. Remember after the 86, yeah, after some of your championships that the Celtics won 81, you and Johnny did you're on the stop and shop the yeah. Glenn Ordway: No, that was that w I I produced that. That w in that was in nineteen eighty four. Yeah. Pete Sheppard: Yeah, and this Providence had one in seventy-three. The Red Sox had one in seventy in seventy-five as well. A literal record. Sick yeah. Glenn Ordway: Sixty seven Impossible Dream, they did that one too. Pete Sheppard: Anyway, but that's that that is so I I just I just grew up around college basketball. And then later on with Rick Petino and Rick, you know, back in the day, he he joined the same country club that my parents belonged to. So Joanne and my mom got to be fairly close at the at the time. Yeah. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: Ooh, I never knew this. Wait a minute. let's get some details here. I never knew this. Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Well, we're talking about, you know, we we this is right before I got into radio. I was nineteen nineteen years old. And I was just I had just got accepted into Connecticut School of Broadcast. I was gonna start in about three or four months, whatever it was. But Rick had been there. that was the final four team. W we had known about Daniel, his six month old son, how sick he was. And of course he passed away when they were in the Big East tournament and they made it to the semis, lost to Georgetown, came back and then You we had we had to go through all of that. We had Easter dinner at big huge table. All of us. I mean, we're all of us. And and I mean all of us, like was like twenty-five of us at this, my family, his, and and we were all on this big table at the Quinnessa Country Club. But my my mom and and and Joanne got they were like p not every day, didn't call on the phone to talk every day, but at the pool and everything, they always they were very next to each other. My mom had a magnificent talent, believe it or not. And she was a brilliant woman of studying palms. She that was like her hobby. Palms and astrology. She loved Glenn Ordway: Studying palms? Really? Pete Sheppard: it. And she she would have these ladies lined up. It was like unbelievable at at this at Quinnesset. You ask anybody during that time, even I'm talking about 70s, 80s, and when When Rick and and Joanne got there and all and the families got there, it was unbelievable. There lines of people lined up to see her get her thoughts on not predicting the future or anything like that, but she was she had a following. I and if she i if she knew about she hated technology, if sh she could have probably done some good stuff today with the w the way the world isn't podcasting. Anyway, we digress. But then but then the best part is not the best part, but after all the the tragedy of her son passing away, so one day I pull I go, it was right after right after the final four. I pull up to the first haul. It was a a Sunday late afternoon. It must have been about five o'clock, four o'clock. And I I just said, okay, I'm I'm gonna I'm gonna go play go play nine holes or eighteen holes, whatever whatever I can get in. I move I go up to the front and there's Rick is up there, Patino, with my friend. Jay Flynn, his br younger brother, who I didn't know very well, but also went to Hendricken. So I pulled the card up, and it's just nobody else. He's like, hey, he's like, hi, I'm Rick. And I said, Yeah, I said I know, Coach, who you are. And then we st we started a conversation, blah, blah, blah. And then he proceeded to tell me for the next four hours in a very delicate, diplomatic, deftly handled way, how he would not go join the New York Knicks. You know, that he was not gonna leave Providence. And you know, I'm 19 years old and I'm buying all this bull. I was like, God, coach, please. I'm like, don't leave. I said I said, I and I I know what's your lifelong, I know it's your lifelong dream. And bah and for four hours. And then I think it was three days later. Bye-bye. And that's when I always knew when I from my before I even got into broadcasting, I was like, I will Glenn Ordway: Well hold on, hold on. It w Pete Sheppard: never trust a coach, speak again. I I brought it all, I was so upset. When he left Glenn Ordway: It was Pete Sheppard: 'cause I said I'm like, Daddy played four hours with me, told me he would not leave. But I didn't know any better at that. I didn't know any better back then in nineteen eighty six. Eight I mean nineteen ninety seven. Glenn Ordway: It was the truth. It was the truth on Monday, Pete. It was the truth on Monday. By Friday it changed. Pete Sheppard: Nineteen eighty seven, I mean. Yeah, it was unbelievable. Glenn Ordway: Did you, did you, did you hear Lobel on the on the podcast say, Pete Sheppard: I heard the whole thing, yeah. Glenn Ordway: say that Rick Petino gathered eight friends, and Lobel happened to be one of them, confidence. They went out to dinner at the Palm, and it was basically Pete Sheppard: Yeah, I heard that. Mm-hmm. Yes. Glenn Ordway: so that Patino could take a vote from these eight people whether he should take off and leave and get out of Boston. That was unbelievable. Pete Sheppard: I I know. Glenn Ordway: And they all voted, yeah, get the hell out of town. Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: And He apparently listened to him. I I'll give you a a quick patino story and then we'll get back to Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: to college sports since I think I owe college football and basketball fans for ignoring them for thirty plus years. Well Pete Sheppard: An apology. Glenn Ordway: at least a minute or two talking about it. I was going through a divorce. It was my only divorce, by the way. I had one divorce, all right? Didn't have many. Well, yeah, exactly. And you know, Lobel and a few Pete Sheppard: Getcha beat. Good now though. Glenn Ordway: other and a few other people I know. And Tommy Heinzen and his lovely wife Helen were nice enough to Pete Sheppard: Helen. God. Glenn Ordway: come up to me and ask me if I wanted to what what are you doing for Thanksgiving? I mean, they were just lovely people. I loved Tommy. He was a great friend and Helen. Pete Sheppard: Yes. God, yeah. Glenn Ordway: And so I said, not doing anything. You know, my and my ex is with the kids and I said, Pete Sheppard: I got nowhere else to go. Glenn Ordway: I I'm I'm hoping the Denny's is open. Pete Sheppard: What? Glenn Ordway: On on Thanksgiving Day, I I I don't know. do you think they'll serve turkey or do I have to get the waffle special? And Tommy sees you come on over, come on over to our place, you know. So we go over, I go over on Thanksgiving Day, and the Pete Sheppard: Need right? Glenn Ordway: only other person that ends up showing up is Petino son Rich. He he's the other other guest that Pete Sheppard: And this is when I knew Richard. I mean, he was when I at Quidnesset back Glenn Ordway: He was I'm gonna say he was like seventeen or eighteen years old at the time. Pete Sheppard: Yeah, I I d I'm talking about he was like four when I Yeah. Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: Okay, yeah. He was like 17 or 18 at the time, Pete. And so the worst part about it was the week leading up to Thanksgiving was one of those weeks that I was just blasting Patino every single day. Screwed up this roster. He did this, he screwed this Pete Sheppard: God. Yeah. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: up, he screwed that. And the team's away. And now I'm suddenly Tommy is introduced to me. And of course, Tommy just doesn't think of shit like this, you know? Pete Sheppard: No, no. Glenn Ordway: what difference does it make? We'll make him friends. You know, we'll give them a turkey leg, you know, stuff the mashed potatoes in their face and they'll be fine. They'll get along fine. So anyway, I'm uncomfortable because it's a 17 or 18 year old kid. He loves his dad. I've been ripping the shit out of his dad all week, and now suddenly we're gonna sit and break bread on Thanksgiving. What are we thankful for? Well, thankful that Ordway's not on the radio today, so we can't blast my father. That's what he knew. He knew all about it. He knew everything. Pete Sheppard: Do you think if do you think he knew you? You think Richard? Yeah. Glenn Ordway: Knew everything. And at one time he joked with me, which was great. And we did talk a little bit about it. And I said, that's my job. That's what we do. And you know, I'm trying to write it off. I'm trying to make excuses. I'm trying to just you know, I'm going through a divorce. I got nobody, nowhere to go. I'm just trying to have a nice Thanksgiving day. Give me more of the wine, Tommy. And of course the cigarettes are flying with Tommy, Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: you know. So anyway, at one point, his dad calls. And you know, Richie picks up the phone, he starts calling, Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: you know, and talking to his dad, happy Thanksgiving, or whatever. And smart 17-year-old kid, funny as shit, he goes, Hey Glenn, you want to talk to my dad? Wish him a Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: happy Thanksgiving. I did from a distance. Happy Thanksgiving. I they were somewhere. I have no idea where they were. Maybe they were on the road. I can't remember. Pete Sheppard: And where was Rick at the time? Where was Coach at the time? They're on the road, yeah. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: specifically where they were, but he was not there. Richie had nowhere to go for Thanksgiving. And so Tommy and Helen, that's what they do. You're you're our you're Pete Sheppard: That's great. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: part of our family. Come on in. And and we did do that and it was and it was fine with Richie the rest of the the way. It was he was the kid was was great. And obviously he's turned out to be a pretty good coach and he's gone on and done bigger and and better things. All right, let me get back to the college. Go ahead. Pete Sheppard: Well, let me just say one thing about Tommy and Helen. I mean, was there never a better couple? she Glenn Ordway: Unbelievable. Pete Sheppard: was she could have had her own stand-up show. That's how funny Glenn Ordway: Yeah. Pete Sheppard: she was. And I mean, one liner after one liner after one liner, at times could swear like a truck driver, Glenn Ordway: Yes. Pete Sheppard: and and kept Tommy in pla I mean, her one liners back at him. I'd I'd have like if I was Glenn Ordway: She put Pete Sheppard: sipping a drink, it'd be coming out of my mouth. And I remember at your fiftieth. surprise party at your house, which I which I attended and Sarah, it was for surprise thing. That was a great day at your house. Glenn Ordway: That we have fun. Pete Sheppard: And I only lived that at that time, I think I lived like ten minutes from you back then. But that was she was never funnier that day. I mean, h had the whole place in stitches between her and Dick Raditz and his his wife, and I got it her name's escapes me. God rest his soul on her soul. my God, the t it was it was it was like better than any stand up I had ever seen in my life. They were hysterical. Glenn Ordway: Yeah, it di they were and they were hilarious together because they were pretty friendly w with Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Yep. Glenn Ordway: each other. But no, Tommy was wonderful. Helen was wonderful and Helen got very, very sick and r Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Yeah, she did. Glenn Ordway: and she was so brave going through that period Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: of time. The one thing I will say about Helen, because people saw Tommy all the time. And I don't think in his younger days when he was even when he was coach, Tommy was a really good dresser. And then he kind of became Slobby. Not Johnny Mo's sloppy, but he gave became slobby. Yes, that's a that's good. That's a good description. Yes. Right. So you go over to Tommy's house he lived in Pete Sheppard: No, Doug Doug he came he became Doug Mosloppy. Yeah. D former coach of the Nuggets, you know? I'm not wearing a tie today. I don't care. whatever. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: in Newton. You go over to Tommy's house, and you'd walk through the house, and you Helen showed me the the we were joking about Tommy was wearing some goofy looking shirt or something like that, Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: and she said to me, she was offended by it, because she bought Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: every piece of clothing that he had. And then she brings me in to see his closet. So Tommy Heinzen, okay, was like it was like a male model's closet. You walk in there and it was gigantic with one of those big tables in the middle of it, but every single thing was hung perfectly, folded Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: perfectly. And I'm sitting and I look at Tommy and I said, when the hell are you ever going to wear this shit over at the garden? Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: This stuff is pretty cool. Why aren't you wearing it? And he says, Well, Helen buys it for me. She goes out and gets all this stuff and and Tommy was one of those guys that kinda like me, you know, you wearing the same shit every three or four days, you know? But he had this impeccable closet. But we go off on the tangents and probably we'll Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: do more 'cause we've got so many memories. But I do want to p apologize to you. I think I Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: owe an apology to Teddy Sarantis. I'm sorry, my man. but I was never into college football, college basketball. I was probably more into college hockey because I had done some games when I was younger, college hockey. Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: And I was probably more into that than I was in football or basketball. And of course that was bigger in Massachusetts, because you, you know, you had BCPU, you know, Harvard, Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: and then eventually Northeastern joined the the pack and became pretty good. But I am into college football now. So And two years ago, I saw a couple games over at Arizona State because Cam Scataboo was must see in person. You just had to see this kid because he would never stop. You know, you could never tackle him. Pete Sheppard: Fifty four percent, fifty four percent co eds, fifty four percent I think, highest in the country. Glenn Ordway: So and then two weeks Pete Sheppard: Ha ha ha ha. Glenn Ordway: ago, Pete, I was down in Tucson and went Pete Sheppard: Mm. Glenn Ordway: to the University of Arizona Cincinnati game. that was a terrible game. It it Yeah, but Pete Sheppard: And that was a blowout. They killed They they killed b they killed a bear. I Arizona killed the bear cats, yeah. Glenn Ordway: they were terri Arizona was terrible in the first half. They got a quarterback, he's like five eight or five nine. Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Yeah, it was like but it was like what, thirty eight to seven or something like that. Eventually they found yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: Yeah, we all in the second half. It was a tight game at halftime, only because Arizona was just screwing up constantly. This kid had no accuracy with with his passing, and Cincinnati couldn't score. They're the Arizona's defense was pretty good, but it was a blowout in in the in the end. But there's nothing like the atmosphere that you get at these college football games. I hate to admit it to people back in Boston. I go now and then I watch all of these games. I literally believe. that I could go and do a show right now about college football and in the college basketball season about college basketball and f and more than fool you actually get you believing that I knew what the hell I was talking about. I could never, ever do that in all of the years I was doing talk shows in Boston. And that's why I never talked about it, because if I did, I think I would sound like a a total fool. I would sound like a guy from Boston Who goes on a Tennessee radio station and is gonna break down the BC Tennessee game without notes? That's what I would have sounded like. Pete Sheppard: Yeah, but yeah, in a ball game 'cause I hadn't watched him in a month. But the that was the dumpest thing I've ever done. But we we w how many times are you gonna break that? But but but you couldn't you c you c y Glenn Ordway: I need tape of that, Pete. I need tape. Anybody has tape of that, please get it to me. Pete Sheppard: you I still think the Bill Burt not knowing the date of the Letterman show that day when the Patriots were playing Pid there was some big thing that was going on and he was that you don't remember Glenn Ordway: What was that? I I I'm not sure I remember that. Pete Sheppard: the Bill Burt thing with the Letterman show that was was a taped show he thought it was like three days earlier instead it was like four or five weeks in the past and there was something with Glenn Ordway: yeah. What was that? Pete Sheppard: the Steelers I forget what it was but he was going on the premise about the bus Jerome Bettis I think said this on Letterman show and then somebody called in and goes Bill that was it was like two or three months or two or what not weeks it was like two or three he goes that was taped July blah blah blah And I remember Falco and I are like, we're off the hook today. And I and that and that's what I went on. I remember I went on and I said it was be it was before the Patriots Raider snowball game. It was bef the it was before we were doing the show. It's like that Thursday or Friday. Or after it was after it. It was after all of that. And I said, Yeah, Bill, I said, you know, you know, it may snow a little that night. You never you never know. I said, You might venetarian might have to anyway, it was like one liner after one liner after one liner, and I and Glenn Ordway: Yeah, I do remember it. I do remember it. And we were peppering him with this stuff. Billy Burt is a great guy. I I I I love Billy Burt, but you're right. Billy Burt Pete Sheppard: I love him to death. He is a great guy. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: was one of those guys he wasn't dumb. He was smart, but he had brain farts. There were there were times in which you you sit in there and and I know electricity runs through our body. There are times you're sitting there going, Billy, is the is the voltage going to your brain right now? Okay. So they hired him, the station hired him to do like a Saturday morning show. So his own show, do you remember this? The the Billy Bird show Pete Sheppard: Yeah, I do. Glenn Ordway: on on Saturday morning or whatever. The first time he gets on there, he's so fucking nervous, Pete, that he gives the phone number, but he doesn't give the station phone number. He gives his home phone number. Pete Sheppard: And and back in the day the l and I never get to know but you did. Who did that Cliff and Cl who which who was Glenn Ordway: Cliff Cliff Ke Larry Claflin did that. Yes. Yes, Larry Claflin did a lot of things. And we're gonna do Pete Sheppard: Larry Claff gave out his home phone number. Yep. Yeah, I know. Glenn Ordway: we're gonna do I'm gonna do a show with people that were around during those days. we're gonna do that soon, maybe in the next month, and it'll take people back to really the start of Sports Talk Radio in Boston when these two sports writers, one from the Herald, one from the Globe, Cliff and Claf, they were called, were doing a show, and I'm telling you they're the most Outrageous characters you had would ever see. Pete Sheppard: See, I ne I couldn't listen to that. I only got to listen to Eddie once in a while at night. back in the day. There was no sports radio station in Rhode Island. It was Chuck Wilson, who was very good. He was on this dinky Glenn Ordway: Remember Chuck Wilson? Pete Sheppard: station, WGN, which back then it was like WPRO, WGN were pretty big AM station, music stations, mind you, at the time. And Chu and then Chuck finally got a promo a a the WPRO hired him and finally people could hear him. And he used to do, I think, 6 to 8 or 6 to 9 p.m. at night. And that was the first Glenn Ordway: He did. Pete Sheppard: real sports talk show. Now the fan had just come on, WFAN, and and I would listen to that. you could pick it up. but I couldn't pick up 850. I couldn't pick up HDH at the Glenn Ordway: Well you could pi you could pick it up to good because they had a great, you know, AM signal that kinda went yeah. No. Pete Sheppard: time or wherever the Boston people were talking, they did the few shows that were on, very rarely. Yeah, I know. Until I moved to Glenn Ordway: Yeah, tell tell me it yeah, tell me about it. That was our experience on the eight fifty signal. Yeah. Yeah. Pete Sheppard: Until I moved to Boston for Connectic well, Wellesley Hills at the time for Connecticut School of Broadcasting. That's where I moved to. And that's the first time I was like, I can finally hear some sports talking and clear and all that stuff. But you got can we can I know it would digress, but can you gotta tell the Buck story? You talk about Glenn Ordway: Which one? Pete Sheppard: Billy Burt having a s having a show, solo show. you gotta you haven't told the Buck story yet of when you had to fire him for his Okay. Okay, okay. Glenn Ordway: you know what? I'm gonna save that b for for Buckley. I'm gonna save that because we we are Pete Sheppard: All right. Glenn Ordway: we are going to get Buck on the on this Pete Sheppard: Okay. Glenn Ordway: podcast. And I'll save that for Buckley. But yes, I did when I took over as program director, the first person I fired was Steve Buckley. So you're gonna have to wait like a month to find out exactly what happened. Pete Sheppard: Okay. And and and all I can say, the only spoiler that I'll give is he always gave that Newman response from Seinfeld like, What took you so long? Glenn Ordway: Sort of yeah. That was that was no, that was Pete Sheppard: Had nothing to do with performance, but anyway, we d I'll let you we'll save it. That is but that is one of the most funniest incredible stories, I think, of out of all our shit that we have, but yeah. Glenn Ordway: Well, you'll you'll get it. There's no question about it. You will you will get it. But you bring up Billy Burt. That was so funny when Billy's giving his home phone number. And of course, in those days, you know, it was his home phone number. So you can't really change your your home phone number. It's very difficult to do. And yet people were calling up his home phone two, three, Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: four o'clock in the morning, keeping him up all night. Pete Sheppard: Yeah. It was like eight six seven five three nine. Everybody would dial that number with the but Glenn Ordway: It was it it it it was ludicrous. So now let's get back to the the Patriots 'cause we've done our our Mayacouple with the the college fans. Hope Teddy I hope Teddy will forgive me and I hope he'll come on the podcast, but go ahead. Pete Sheppard: Well well let me let me just throw this college football thing Yeah. Let me throw the college football because I I I yeah I still get it sometimes. We well, why are you a hurricane fan? Look, what we used to vacation, I was lucky enough my parents had a place in Florida in the seventies, up for for thirty years. Glenn Ordway: Wow, you were you were like you were like wealthy like Pete, right? Pete Sheppard: Well, I I mean my dad was doctor, dental you know, D D S and some oral Glenn Ordway: So there you go. Pete Sheppard: surgery and stuff. So I was I was fortunate. They were great parents, you know. I was very fortunate growing up, I won't I won't lie. and by the way, I still not have been to Disney World since nineteen seventy eight. Glenn Ordway: Why not? You live in Florida. So? What's three hours? That's nothing. Pete Sheppard: but it's three hours away and I it just don't I I don't know. Rides don't too many lines and short lines. I don't know. I'll I'll get Glenn Ordway: Well lines are crazy. Yeah. Pete Sheppard: I'll get there someday. It just it's not on my I don't really care. I don't have no Glenn Ordway: Well you don't you don't have kids, that's why. And they they don't allow dogs there. You gotta drop at the kennel on the way in. Yeah. Pete Sheppard: And I'm afraid I should go and maybe get sued by some fat idiot that's gonna dry over me with a rascal, you know, because that's all there is. I mean, they need they Glenn Ordway: Isn't isn't it funny, is isn't it funny when you formerly were fat, now you can make fun of fat people? Pete Sheppard: If I I if I was three hundred and fifty pounds now, I'd still make fun of the people that go there and screw it. No. Yeah, yeah. But anyway, Glenn Ordway: Well, I think you you make fun of anybody. You know, you're equal opportunity Pete Sheppard: so we I I just grew up with I the Miami Hurricanes when we and we used to vacation every it was even s right after cr December, February, and April. We were down there three usually two weeks at a time. I would take another they would let me take another week out of school and get homework and take away all that stuff. But I just became a Hurricane fan because they were and I'm talking about when they almost lost the program. They were not gonna just drop from Division Two. They were gonna go, they were gonna lose the program until Schellenberger took over in in nineteen eighty or eighty one. And then Glenn Ordway: Schellenberger, yeah. Pete Sheppard: they then they ended up win, you know, beating Nebraska. And I you know, but I I've always been a huge, huge Miami Hurricane fan. Yes, I rooted for Boston College as well. But the Canes have always been that's that's my team. They've always been my team. love or hate and I love the haters. Could bring it on. And you talk about atmosphere. And I'm not I I'm not going to the Miami Florida State game this week. It's at Hard Rock, but I was at the Miami Notre Dame game last week. I'm not saying it's better than Foxborough or a college atmosphere or so, but I'm just telling you, the problem I have with a lot of New Englanders, and especially the BC people, is they have they think the sun rises and sets on that. It's the older people. They think the Glenn Ordway: Here we go. Here we go. Here we go. Pete Sheppard: sun rises and sets on that school. And they've never been to another big time Foot college football atmosphere. Forget the NFL. Glenn Ordway: Whoa whoa woo wo what do you mean an another? I I I don't think I would consider Boston College one of those. I wish they were. Pete Sheppard: I I don't I don't I I'm saying outside of Alumni Stadium, that they haven't been no, I'm talking about the fans. They haven't been to South Bend. They haven't Glenn Ordway: Okay. Pete Sheppard: been to Miami. They haven't been to Penn State for a whiteout. They haven't been to the big house in Michigan. They haven't been to the horseshoe at Ohio State. They haven't been to Tennessee, where you have 110 LSU at night. I mean, it it it's com it's Clemson is Glenn Ordway: LSU. LSU is unbelievable. Unbelievable. I've done it. Pete Sheppard: it it's totally, totally different. Miami-Notre Dame last year, my God, it was Absolutely beyond electric. And I'm and I'm sorry, it's just a different type of atmosphere. And I recommend, even if you're not a fan of this team or that team, get out there, take your buddies once a year, go to a go get tickets to a big game, whether it's at Michigan or Penn State, Ohio State, Miami, LSU, get out there and and and go experience it. I'm telling you, you will. You you won't believe it. It's completely different than going to Foxwood. And by the I thought the crowd yesterday was a little lame. Did you? Did you not? I thought it was a little lame. I got this spoil I got this spoiled brat atmosphere again. I know, but it just I know. Maybe the microphones weren't Glenn Ordway: I d I I don't think you can ever tell I I watched it on t T V. I d how can you tell on television whether the crowd's into it or not? Pete Sheppard: up. Maybe the microphones were were turned down low. I I was just it just it seemed a little maybe because it jumped out to a 28-7 lead and everybody just kind of went, huh. It's just anyway. Glenn Ordway: All right, so so let me let me give you let me give you two negatives of going to the college football games right now, because now Pete Sheppard: Yes. Glenn Ordway: I'm I'm I'm I'm doing this stuff. So number one, there are a lot of students in the crowd that have no idea what's going on in the football game. It is clearly a night out in which we're gonna network up and down. And so you spend the whole time, okay, and I don't like getting up and down. I'm sitting on aluminum benches because most of these college stadiums have aluminum benches, okay, like the old Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: the Sullivan and Schaefer Stadium had. And having lost some weight, Pete, I don't have that fat cushion on my ass that I used to have. So Pete Sheppard: I agree. Glenn Ordway: the al you can relate to this. So by halftime, my ass is feeling sore, all right? No, no, and then they and they rent, hold Pete Sheppard: You didn't bring a cushion? Not one day. Sometimes they have but they can buy there. Glenn Ordway: on. They rent you these little cushions. Get this rent. For twenty-five dollars. I'm sitting there, twenty-five Pete Sheppard: Whoa. Glenn Ordway: bucks, they rent you a cushion with a little back to it, and you clip it onto the Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Yep. Glenn Ordway: seat. I'm not gonna do that. I mean, I'm you know, I'm old, but I don't I don't try to present myself as old, so I say, screw it. I suffer through it. But anyway, you are constantly getting up because there are long rows at these college stadiums and everybody's gotta move. And then they go and they come back in ten minutes. They don't go to to to the restroom, they don't go get concessions, they go to visit with other friends because you can see them two sections or a section away. And then they come back. You spend the whole day doing it. Here's the other one that's being contagious right now in college sports. And that is in the fourth quarter when your team is doing well, all the the the the the men, boys, take their shirts off now. Okay. Now there are some kids that they they pull it up and they got six pack, you know, and they look great. Pete Sheppard: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Glenn Ordway: Then you got this other fat Pete Sheppard: yeah. Glenn Ordway: slob that's pulling it up like me and I'm sitting there saying, What are you doing, dude? You look like a total fool. Pete Sheppard: Yeah, but but but they were doing that at Fenway, Glenn. They were doing that at Fenway during the latter half of the the baseball season. Glenn Ordway: I know, I know. It's it's it's a b it's a here's what's worse. We like to talk a lot of nostalgia on this podcast. You probably know because Pete and I have been around for quite a few years. I we know we're not gonna ever talk about the wave because it is stupid that anybody is still doing the way the wave is 40 years old now and Pete Sheppard: I wanna be ejected. I want to pe I want people to be ejected for doing it. And I don't want to hear, you're taking this, it's your get off my lawn type of guy. No, I've been saying this for forty years. I and I Glenn Ordway: You have. You have and it's a it's a a waste of time. Pete Sheppard: I I I remember even I remember the Yankees Padres World Series n in the nineties, late nineties. And I remember Vin Scully going, There's the w it was at Jack Murphy Stadium, there's the wave coming down the first baseline, it's approaching home plate. And I'm like, Stop it! Vin, I Glenn Ordway: Yeah, the college. Pete Sheppard: love you. You're you're way better. approaching now, it's past home plate, and now we're headed down the third baseline of left field. my god. It was fun back in the day when the University of Washington started it. Glenn Ordway: Correct. Pete Sheppard: Or Washington State back in the day. It was kinda cool. It was kinda cool on Monday Night Football when it's Jim Zorn and the Seattle Seahawks and Steve Largent and they would do it and they're goofiness and Chuck Knox out there and you would see it in that big, gigantic stadium. And then everybody got would have let it be. It would have been if that had just stayed in Seattle, I'd be fine with it. That's their thing. You know, kind of like Sweet Carolina's the Red Sox thing, even though it's stupid at it's stupid Glenn Ordway: th that's a n that's another one. Pete Sheppard: after when you down 10-0 and they play it. Glenn Ordway: Another one. Pete Sheppard: But yeah then we see with then if we s if we criticize it, Glenn, we're the get off your lawn type of people. But I I criticize it back in the day Glenn Ordway: Well I I d yeah. Pete Sheppard: when we did the prime. If the team's losing, I don't want to hear it. You know? But but but I but Glenn Ordway: Yeah, I they they can say get off your lawn all they want to me. Pete Sheppard: if the waiver just stayed in Seattle, we'd be a better country. Yes. Glenn Ordway: So college game last week I mentioned you were of Arizona Cincinnati game, the wave twice. Once in the first half and once in the second half. And it's amazing to me, Pete. Pete Sheppard: Did you get up? Glenn Ordway: No. No, I did not get up. What am I gonna get up for? No, no, I'm not doing not doing Pete Sheppard: Let's do it now, Glenn. Ready? Here. Do it. Glenn Ordway: no, I'm not doing it, Pete. Yeah. Yeah, I'll I'll do it, Pete. I'll I'll do it. There you go. I'll get up. I'll get up. Not doing it. It Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: it and people are really into it and I'm sitting there saying, Do you know how passe it is? So these are young people. And you talk about getting off, you know, get off my lawn, people. Young people a lot of times look at, you know, older people like us and they said, those old farts, they have no idea, you know. Well and yet you're doing something that the old farts gave up on 40 years ago because we thought it was fucking stupid. And you're still out there doing the freaking wave. It's just ridiculous. And they don't even they don't even realize Pete Sheppard: It's like doing the chicken dance at Glenn Ordway: It is really paste. I mean, it is old stale, you know, jump the shark, all of that. Gonzo. Pete Sheppard: But there's a lot of ste there's a lot of stadiums, pro and college alike, that still do it. And I'm by bear it Glenn Ordway: I just told you it's big at college football. Get every college football game I go to now, Pete, they have got to do the wave. They did it twice in Arizona, once in the first half, because you know what? Some people get there late. And so we have to make sure they get the experience of enjoying the wave in the second half, because they might have missed it in the first half. my God. And the Neil Diamond thing. The only great thing about the Neil Diamond was when Neil Diamond actually showed up at Fenway Park and sang it. Now that was cool. Okay, that I can, you know. Pete Sheppard: Showed up, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it was. Especially after especially after twenty thirteen and you know, the marathon bombing and he and he showed Glenn Ordway: Yes. Yes. Pete Sheppard: up unexpectedly. That was fantastic. Glenn Ordway: But it's it's just worn out. And I don't know, I guess some people like it, but going to Fenway nowadays is really an event. You know what it is? It's a cheap date too, when you think about it. You know, when young people go there and you see a lot of young people, it's a cheap date, you know. Pete Sheppard: And not only that, you have to have and this is why I used to always be against bringing little kids who not first of I'm not talking about cause my first my f Glenn Ordway: Pete hates hold on, hold on. I just wanna I just wanna alert the audience. Pete hates little children. Okay, I just want you to know that'll be an ongoing theme. He hates little children. Little dogs, he loves little children, out. But go ahead. Pete Sheppard: Most of them. Most of them. I do. no I love. Look, my first game, I was seven years old. I couldn't have been more thrilled. It was nineteen seventy-five. My dad took me the first game. Red Sox beat the twins twelve to one. I'll never forget it. Three home runs in the first inning, Rice, Yaz, and Fisk. Right and we were in roof box seats at the time, no luxury boxes, nineteen seventy five. I was like, wow, this is a b and my dad taught me I I taught me how to keep score. I had a hostess cherry pie and a hot dog. I was very happy. I wanted the game to go 25 innings. I didn't want to leave. That's how excited I was about it. I didn't need a bouncy house. I didn't need to have an iPad. I didn't need a phone. I just actually sat there and watched, and I wanted to watch the game and I loved keeping score. Fenway Park is like a mini Disneyland now, if you go there. If you have to have all these distra and lots of these parks, you have to have all these distractions. So I mean, you know, my Marlins in Arizona has a pool. In the outfield. You know, so now you have to have all these distractions for all these kids who are six and under who don't give a shit about being at the game. They don't care. They're not watching the game. They make it miserable for the parents who want to watch the game. You become a glorified babysitter. You gotta leave in the fourth or fifth inning because little Sally and Tommy are cranky and they've run out of stuff to do. The bouncy house isn't as fun anymore, and they've eaten enough hot dogs, they've already puked all over three or four people. And so now they've had the la they've had their hundred dollars worth of hot dogs, ice cream sandwiches, popcorn, and and cotton candy. And now they want to take a nap because they're loaded with sugar. They don't give a shit about the game. And you as a parent have just spent $500 to go to a forwarding baseball game for what? You think your kids gonna remember that? No. And then you think the pet the people around you are gonna remember it? No, they're gonna remember the puke that is around them in the seat. And why little Harry and little and little Tommy and little little Sally are just running around like banshees while the parents just sit there, a whole bunch of them. And then you got the idiot father at with the papoose, who's trying to get a five-dollar baseball, sacrificing life and limb. And not only that, his child, because he wants to catch a fucking baseball. The kid's hanging over the rafters. Cause he wants to catch a five-dollar baseball, you fucking idiot. Glenn Ordway: You know what? It's it's it's a lot cheap Pete Sheppard: Other than that, it's a great experience. Glenn Ordway: It's a lot cheaper and less taxing on the body if you stop by Dick's sporting goods on the way to the game and pick up a five dollar baseball for the kid. You know, it's a lot. So I'll tell you I'll d you bring up a good point. I'll bring give you Pete Sheppard: Just it's so stupid. Anyway. Glenn Ordway: my first experience going to a baseball game, and I must have been, I don't know, Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: eight or nine years old, something like that. My father was a milkman. He did people don't know what a milkman. is today because they don't have him anymore. But he used to drive a a milk truck and people would get the milk delivered in these glass bottles where the cream was at the top Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: and the milk was at the bottom and you'd have to shake it up. Correct. And so my that's what correct. Pete Sheppard: And there was a milk box by everyone's front of the front door. Usually metal a metal box 'cause in and it w could contain cold. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: Yeah, and you bring you they they drop off the milk at at your doorstep. And so my father was a milkman and he delivered milk to Johnny Pesky's house. So we got to know Johnny Pesky. And so Johnny Pesky said, Would your kid like to go to a Red Sox game? And he's he my father said, Absolutely, yeah. He says, I'll take care of you. You know, come on in. So not only did Johnny Pesky have us with great seats down the third base Pete Sheppard: Wow. Glenn Ordway: side. Pete Sheppard: Wow. Glenn Ordway: Johnny Pesky brought us out onto the field because he was Johnny Pesky. Correct. Correct. Pete Sheppard: He was the third base coach at the time, right? Wasn't he th yeah. Glenn Ordway: And and and it's funny. well, I'll I'll go into it in a second, but we go down to the field and my father introduces me to Mr. Pesky, and I'm Mr. Pesky or Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: whatever, and we're carrying on a conversation. He couldn't have been nicer to me, you know? And he gives me Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: two baseballs, Pete, and then he gives me a cap and he's bringing shit out to me in the Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: whole works. It was unbelievable. And then He Larry Claflin, who I later worked with, I'm eight or Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: nine years old now. Larry Claflin comes out onto the field and he walks over and he starts talking to Johnny Pesky. He had to ask him a question. And Larry used to talk like this. He had like kind of a list Pete Sheppard: Yes. Yes. Glenn Ordway: he tucked on the side of his mouth. And so Larry Claflin is there. Johnny Pesky introduces my father and me to Larry Claflin. We fast forward now a few years. I end up working with Larry Claflin. I did the show right after Pete Sheppard: Wow. Wow. Glenn Ordway: him, but I was eight or nine years old when I first met Larry Claflin. But I did years later when I started doing talk radio and I was working at the radio station. I was doing the Red Sox pregame and post-game show. So I was down in spring training for six weeks, you know, during the the springtime. Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: And that's when I got to know. Johnny Pesky and I told Johnny Pesky of that story. I said it was an eight year nine-year-old kid when I first met you. And Johnny Pesky was the nicest man to me. Even with issues I had with Don Zimmer and whatever, he would pull me aside. He would tell me how to handle it. And he was almost like, you know, my my yes, it was it was my exactly. He was my Pete Sheppard: Mm, like a father figure, sort of. A media father figure. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: guy that was walking me through the terrain here of this crazy Red Sox organization. But I I loved the man. He was just Pete Sheppard: Yeah I I I Glenn Ordway: A wonderful, wonderful guy. Pete Sheppard: first met him. I must have been I mean I was at the station. I think it was around 98. It might have right before I got on the big show, but I was still doing, you know, Wallach and I were we were doing seven days a week, doing two shows together on Saturday. And we were at Fenry one day, and I just remember when he g he got up to me, he goes, I was down, I don't know why it was down at the duck. Well, I don't know why it was down there. It was some promotion. And I said, hi, I said, hi John. He goes he goes, yeah, Shepard. Yes, Shepard. He goes, I like you. That's all that's something Glenn Ordway: He knew he Pete Sheppard: I go. I go, thanks. I said, I appreciate it. I said, I have you know, I said big fan for many, many, many years. Can I before yeah. Glenn Ordway: He Pete, hold on one second with with Johnny Pesky. He knew everybody, every one of the writers who was writing, because he'd read. He Pete Sheppard: Everybody. Yeah. Yep. Glenn Ordway: knew everybody who was on the radio and the TV. He would come to me and if we had a new person on the staff or somebody that was Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: in just in the locker room that we're hiring, because in the old days, you they Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: we used to hire people, put microphones in front of players' faces, you know, and pay them a few bucks or whatever. Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Yeah. Interns, yeah. Glenn Ordway: Yeah. And he would want to know who's who's that one? Is it that new one? Who did you just hire? What's his name? What's Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: It was but he was really attuned to everything that was going on in that clubhouse. Amazing. Pete Sheppard: I I I have to go back if you don't my real quick, I gotta tell cause I w I so wanted to if I could have jumped into you and Lobe. You had it was a great podcast you did with Bob. Fantastic. And the stuff about Glenn Ordway: Go ahead. It was fun. Pete Sheppard: the Johnny Mo stuff was hysterical. But of course, the burning of the pants is a legendary thing. I I still I think I've told you this before. I my story about you and Johnny, I think is even more legendary for me. and I was l and I was listening tonight. The pants thing, I remember it. But the Mavericks came into the league in what? Nineteen eighty four, eighty five, early eighties. Glenn Ordway: yeah, early I maybe a couple of years before maybe eighty two, eighty three, right around there, I think. Pete Sheppard: Eighty two, eighty-three, whatever it was, it was a school night for me. I'm sixteen, fifteen, sixteen years old. The game is not on television. All the games were not on TV. You were playing the Mavericks. You Glenn Ordway: Most games were not. Pete Sheppard: you were in Dallas. It's an I believe a nine thirty start Eastern time. You're out. And Glenn Ordway: I know exactly what you're gonna talk about. Go ahead. Pete Sheppard: the game I I am listening at the trend the radio is well I got a clock radio, so I'm big clock radio back then. So I didn't I I had gone past the transistor Glenn Ordway: Big clock for Trick Ham. Pete Sheppard: under the pillow. So I got the little clock radio now. And whatever station in Rhode Island was carrying the Celtics. It might have been PRO. So I have it on 9 30. You come out, you do, you know, the pregame show, whatever. Anyway, the game starts, five minutes, six, seven. Almost literally, no Johnny, just you going on and on about the game and everything else. And all of a sudden, Glenn Ordway: Well the game started. Pete Sheppard: all of a sudden, out of nowhere, John comes on, puts that set and goes. There are fifty thousand criminals in the city of Dallas and they threw me up against a wall for smoking a cigarette. I fucking lost it. I thought Glenn Ordway: He Pete Sheppard: that was and he went off on the the security because he didn't I he didn't have his press badge on him. And they they were going to arrest him or throw him out for smoking a cigarette Glenn Ordway: It did. Pete Sheppard: at what was that was it Memorial, what was it called? The old what Dallas plate, I forget. Reunion Arena. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: Reunion Arena? Yeah. Pete Sheppard: But all it was it was like you you're like bird to Mikhail. I've all the pimp. 50,000 criminals in this city, and they throw me up against a wall for smoking a cigarette. I thought I was dying. Glenn Ordway: So you can you can imagine you can imagine my feeling with this. And I'm sitting there going, what the hell is happening? Because he he that he never did the pregame show. We would have him maybe do, you know, a couple minutes with Casey Jones every once in a while. Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: But even then, he had to have somebody with him because the buttons were kind of confusing to John. Pete Sheppard: Yeah, yeah. Glenn Ordway: Now which one starts it to play? And you know, it was like, so Pete Sheppard: Play. Glenn Ordway: he didn't do that, which was fine because it extended his career. Just do the games. But the game starts. And I was so nervous because Johnny and we mentioned it with with Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: with Bob Lobel that he was extremely insecure. And the one Pete Sheppard: Yes. Glenn Ordway: thing that Johnny had to do, so you had to get out of the way because once you came to the game broadcast, Johnny had to say, This is Johnny most high above courtside or directly at courtside, it was Pete Sheppard: Above courts that's Glenn Ordway: we get ready due basketball battle between the Celtics and the Dallas Mavericks. And as I as you heard, sometimes you didn't know who we were playing, but Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: so but he wasn't there for that. And I'm sitting there going, shit. Wh where where is he? He's missing the open, and I can't do his open because if I do, he's gonna be all pissed off. But the game started. So they Pete Sheppard: Yeah, yeah. Glenn Ordway: they they they had the jump ball, and the engineers look at me, go, go. And so I start doing the play by play. And I'm gonna guess five minutes of game time had expired now. Pete Sheppard: Yeah. At least Yeah. Glenn Ordway: When when Johnny showed up and started screaming, put the headphones on, he wrapped them around his head a couple of times and he was v violent, he was throwing shit. Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: So they had banned cigarette smoking a week before in the state of Texas. Just a week before that, they had banned it. And so they had a lot of security in the building because at that time people would smoke in in games. Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: And so they had to. You know, follow the edict now of absolutely no smoking in any public buildings. So Johnny was a chain smoker. So he would show up at Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: the arena, he'd be in the press room, have some dinner, and keep the cigarette going as he ate dinner. I used to go out to dinner with him. The cigarette Pete Sheppard: Ugh. Glenn Ordway: was going as he'd take a bite of the steak and then he'd go back to the cigarette. So Pete Sheppard: I never understood that. I never understood that. Glenn Ordway: so he I couldn't either beat. And so anyway, that night he's down the hallway. And they're telling him, sir, you have to extinguish the cigarette. He said, No, not gonna extinguish the cigarette. Because Johnny couldn't live without the cigarette. He literally smoked, I would guess, three plus packs of cigarettes a day, maybe 20, 30 cups of coffee, too. He was all wired up all the time. But he goes down the hallway and he refuses to put the cigarette out. He starts giving the state police cop. You know, in in Texas, they get the big hats and they're mean looking. Pete Sheppard: Mm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: And they arrested him. And they had a jail right there in the reunion arena and they threw him in the clinker. And thank God Jan Volk, Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: who was the general manager at the time, was on the road trip. Jan had to go down and bail him out so he could do in the broadcast. Pete Sheppard: How do you find out 'cause no cell phones back. I wonder how how d I wonder how Jan found out. I I didn't know that. Glenn Ordway: We would we were at Jan came over and said, Where's Johnny? Like at the beginning of the broadcast. And we're saying, We have no idea. And we thought, my God, maybe he because he's had you know he had health problems back then. He passed out, something happened, he fell. Pete Sheppard: Yeah, maybe he passed out so is he in the bathroom? Did he pass out? Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: That was the first thing we said. But you're right, it was hysterical. They Jan finally bailed him out and said, That's our broadcaster for the Celtics. We promise he won't smoke again tonight. And apparently Johnny was arguing with the State Com as Jan is getting him off. Johnny said, I will smoke tonight and you will like it. You know, he was giving the guy shit. He couldn't. But he tried, Pete Sheppard: And he didn't smoke during the game that night. I know Glenn Ordway: he tried numerous times. He tried lighting it underneath the table, which I thought he was gonna let his pants on fire that night. He Pete Sheppard: Again, yeah. Glenn Ordway: tried under the table a couple times. He literally went outside at halftime, outside the building, and had trouble getting back in. The same, not as long, but probably the first 30 or 40 seconds of the second half. Moi did the play by play because Johnny went Pete Sheppard: my god. Glenn Ordway: outside to smoke a cigarette. But you're right, he came on the air and he started talking about how many crimes have been committed in Dallas this week, how many rapes, how many robberies, and they arrest me for smoking a cigarette. my. No, no, no. So do you remember my response? Do you remember Pete Sheppard: It yeah. There was never a hello. There was never a hello. He just came in and went on I have sixteen years, fifteen, six I am dying. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: my response to him after he went in this tire? Because I was laughing my ass off. My response, Pete Sheppard: Well I remember your la Glenn Ordway: my response was. Are you high above courtside or directly above courtside to do basketball battle, Mr. Mose? That was my line. Threw it back back at him. we got we got we we Pete Sheppard: That's right. Yeah, your laugh was funny. Glenn Ordway: gotta go. That's that's enough. That's enough good stories and good Patriots talk. Pete Sheppard: well the w the other thing too, th the other one were you in Spain when he could not under he did he goes, I'm having I'm having a little trouble with the big guy. That was another radio broadcast. That Glenn Ordway: Save it. Yes. Save it. save it. And I've got and I've got Pete Sheppard: game that game was not on T V. That was on just radio. And I that was I'm having trouble with the the big guy. Glenn Ordway: Correct. Save it. I I save it. We're gonna do it. We're gonna do it. We're gonna do it with some NBA people who were back at the NBA office, vice presidents who were back at the NBA office. Listening to this. Pete Sheppard: You were trying so hard. I've never seen a broadcaster have a babysitter another broadcast. He hadn't and of course everything is phonetically spelled out for you on the sheet. I've had a little trouble with the big my God. Anyway. Glenn Ordway: We had an interpreter that was working with us. We d we did to know the names 'cause at the time, you know, they were very difficult names to but I'm gonna save that when it became famous and we do have the tape of that, so we'll be able to play that. Pete Sheppard: Okay. Glenn Ordway: because Marv Albert used to do the blooper reels on NBC every week. And Pete Sheppard: Yes, yes, that's right. Glenn Ordway: that next week, that was the lead blooper, and Marv would bring it back, you know, on a regular basis. He'd throw that blooper tape out there 'cause Marv thought it was the funniest thing in the world because Marv's a play by play guy and he said they were going, How the hell can you go overseas and not know the players' pronunciations on the guys? All right, Petey, Jets next week. So we'll Pete Sheppard: my God. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: they're a little bit more competitive, still stupid, still find a way of screwing it up, but they're a little at least a little Pete Sheppard: Yeah, I don't Yeah, they'll they'll find Glenn Ordway: bit more competitive. Pete Sheppard: Yeah. I I don't think the score will be forty five to seventeen. I just think the Glenn Ordway: No. Pete Sheppard: the Patriots and again I wanna see the injury report. I mean this is but they just you talk about next man up, they're getting it done. And I will never ever pick the Patriots to lose against the Jets. Ever. Ever. And not gonna not gonna happen. Glenn Ordway: No. You know we didn't we you know we didn't talk about. Bill Belichak had a big win over the over the weekend. I think he needed that. Based Pete Sheppard: That that was a big win against Pittsburgh on the road. A very, very good team. Glenn Ordway: on the pub around him, I think he needed that one. You know, against a ranked team, he needed that one. Pete Sheppard: Yeah. I do too. yeah, on the road especially. it was impressive. They've been they've been they've been Glenn Ordway: Yep. Yeah. Well he's a good coach. He's a good teacher. There's some other things I think that haunt him right now, but they're Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: but yeah, we all know that. He's a the greatest coach in NFL history. Okay. So and does it all translate into college? Maybe not, but a lot of it translates into college. So the X and O's of football translate, and that's what Bill is really good at. All right, Petey. Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Lay the twenty-one with the hurricanes this week. They're gonna crush Florida State. It's gonna be fabulous. It's gonna be fabulous. Yep. Yep. Glenn Ordway: There he goes. There he goes. Can I give you just a a clue? Pete knows college football inside and out, but when he loves a team, he wears that and sometimes he's not he doesn't think with the head, he thinks with the with the heart. Pete Sheppard: No, I think when I think I did the same thing with Clemson last week. They sixteen and a half point under favorites and I was like, they're gonna clobber this team. Dabbo Sweeney. Dabbo Sweeney should go about to pasture and go out to stud. Yeah. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: Yeah, but Clinton sucks this year. That's not the same. He he will. He will. He's he's he's done there. I mean, they're you know, especially when you have success in the past and now suddenly you're a shell of yourself, it doesn't work. Pete Sheppard: Well, he wouldn't overcome, adjust and adapt, and then he gets mad at the rest of the universe for that, but that's Glenn Ordway: See see, you already made a mistake. You said earlier I never should have done three hours when I did the national show. I should have done one hour. And now I can't shut you up. You know, you want to go three Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: hours again. You're making the same mistake. You're a an error repeater, as Belichick would say. That's your problem. Please do, Teddy. Please do. Gotta get Teddy on. I gotta get Teddy on the podcast. Heaven tr Pete Sheppard: I'm sorry. I apologize a thousand times, Senator. Yeah. Well, I like your idea too about the the former callers coming on, you know, the the the celebrity callers. Glenn Ordway: We're gonna we're gonna do a show with just the former callers. A bunch of will have all the boxes up there and No you can't. No, you can. You're not a caller. Pete Sheppard: Can I be on with that too? I w cause y no, I but only because I'll all right. Well I'll I'll I'll gonna text you stuff that you may I've forgotten that you might wanna bring up. Funny stuff. No, so I will be the research. All right.
