- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:22Speaker 1: a hater. It is that time of week. We have
- 0:24Speaker 1: a guest. Join us. Check him out at Channel 6,
- 0:27Speaker 1: the best college football writer in America, Spencer Hall. What's
- 0:29Speaker 1: going on, sir?
- 0:31Speaker 2: I'm geeked. I am now officially like in the mode
- 0:34Speaker 2: of like I'm watching camp tape, like sincerely and without
- 0:38Speaker 2: an ounce of irony, like watching reps and going, ooh,
- 0:41Speaker 2: he threw three TDs against his teammates yesterday. It's going
- 0:44Speaker 2: to be an amazing year.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm there. I see you getting to your playing weight.
- 0:48Speaker 1: And when I talk about you getting into your playing weight,
- 0:49Speaker 1: I'm not talking about your body. I'm talking about the
- 0:51Speaker 1: facial hair. Got a haircut. You know what I'm saying?
- 0:54Speaker 2: Back in from the woods. Yeah, you got to come
- 0:56Speaker 2: back to civilization for three or four months. You know,
- 0:59Speaker 2: I got a trim. I may be getting another one
- 1:02Speaker 2: in the next two months. I'm on top of things.
- 1:05Speaker 1: And we love the idea of when you get these haircuts,
- 1:07Speaker 1: given that you live in Atlanta, it's always fun to
- 1:09Speaker 1: see your new world of compliments that pops up with
- 1:13Speaker 1: the cut and fades away directly proportional to new growth.
- 1:17Speaker 2: That's right. You get this. Everyone's like, oh, man, did
- 1:20Speaker 2: you lose weight? And you're like, in my head? Yeah.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Lost about 10 pounds of hair.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I used to be able to do that.
- 1:28Speaker 2: You still can. I don't want you to know. I
- 1:29Speaker 2: don't want you to do that. If you wanted to
- 1:31Speaker 2: grow out a beautiful head of hair right now, you
- 1:33Speaker 2: could because you did it in the pandemic. I still
- 1:36Speaker 2: think it's there.
- 1:37Speaker 1: I loved the pandemic. The pandemic was the first time
- 1:40Speaker 1: that our hairlines didn't matter, right? We didn't have time
- 1:43Speaker 1: to be worried about that. I was stopping the spread
- 1:45Speaker 1: and that thereby allowed me to have a thick, lush,
- 1:48Speaker 1: luxurious head of hair. And I will tell you, In
- 1:51Speaker 1: moments of stress, that is what I miss it. I
- 1:53Speaker 1: don't like now if I'm like playing with my hair,
- 1:56Speaker 1: I go straight to the scalp. Now, don't get me wrong.
- 1:59Speaker 1: That can also be very soothing. But the difference is
- 2:02Speaker 1: for it to soothe, you got to get all the
- 2:04Speaker 1: way in there.
- 2:05Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? And you got to keep
- 2:07Speaker 2: it there. That's the thing. I had a shaved head
- 2:10Speaker 2: for a while back in college when I was like
- 2:14Speaker 2: in sort of a like Stone Cold Steve Austin goes
- 2:16Speaker 2: to a rave mode. And I had it slick, lived
- 2:20Speaker 2: in Florida. When you put the head to the pillow
- 2:23Speaker 2: at night, the cool on the skin, oh, that's just
- 2:27Speaker 2: an immaculate feeling.
- 2:28Speaker 1: I would also say I'm glad that you pulled off
- 2:30Speaker 1: Stone Cold Steve Austin as opposed to what it otherwise
- 2:34Speaker 1: means when a young white male decides he doesn't want
- 2:37Speaker 1: any hair on his head.
- 2:38Speaker 2: You got to be careful with that.
- 2:40Speaker 1: You got to be really careful with that. Like if
- 2:42Speaker 1: you got a bunch of tattoos, don't.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Don't. No, if you got one tattoo, it's kind of
- 2:48Speaker 2: a push, right? You got to be walking out there
- 2:51Speaker 2: and be friendly. That's the thing. You can't walk out
- 2:53Speaker 2: there mean with a shaved head. You got to walk
- 2:56Speaker 2: out with a shaved head and be nice. So very nice.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Yes, great jokes. Jokes will go a long way. College
- 3:02Speaker 1: football season is here. We get started this weekend. From
- 3:08Speaker 1: what I have been able to glean from kind of
- 3:12Speaker 1: the macro level coverage going into the season, There is
- 3:16Speaker 1: a heavy Arch Manning investment that is not supported by fact,
- 3:24Speaker 1: track record, or history of his own.
- 3:28Speaker 2: No.
- 3:29Speaker 1: This hasn't happened. And by the way, the guy that
- 3:32Speaker 1: he did not beat out at Texas, Quinn Ewers, had
- 3:36Speaker 1: his first preseason game, and I believe it was four
- 3:39Speaker 1: for 16. It might be worse.
- 3:41Speaker 2: I think it was like five for 18. Yeah.
- 3:43Speaker 1: It was bad news.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Yeah, it was bad news. It looked like somebody playing. Okay, listen.
- 3:47Speaker 2: It looked like somebody playing against pros for the first time.
- 3:51Speaker 1: But he wasn't playing against pros. He was playing against
- 3:53Speaker 1: the Orkin man, the Amazon task force. You know what
- 3:58Speaker 1: I'm saying?
- 3:58Speaker 2: I mean, there was a guy in a linebacker, like
- 4:01Speaker 2: a linebacker with a blue vest, right? He made the
- 4:05Speaker 2: tackle and then he took a picture of it, right? Delivered.
- 4:10Speaker 2: uh no i mean yeah he's played but those guys
- 4:12Speaker 2: are still incredibly good and they're better than what you're
- 4:14Speaker 2: gonna see in college you know i i and i
- 4:17Speaker 2: i say this by the way as a manner of
- 4:19Speaker 2: excuse excusing arch because the only time i've seen arch
- 4:22Speaker 2: play in person okay in person was versus georgia and
- 4:26Speaker 2: as our our mutual george foster said who they threw
- 4:29Speaker 2: that boy in the hot grease yeah immediately like they
- 4:33Speaker 2: threw him in the grease immediately and it was popping
- 4:35Speaker 2: and he was frankly, unready, okay? And in a very
- 4:39Speaker 2: unfair situation, Georgia was in a lather. It was the
- 4:42Speaker 2: second quarter. They were already getting all of the cheeks kicked,
- 4:47Speaker 2: like just getting smoked, right? Sometimes the defense just does that.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Like they could just sit back and cover one and
- 4:53Speaker 2: they're like, we're murdering you. We're murdering you. They were
- 4:55Speaker 2: as motivated and as aware of the game plan as
- 4:59Speaker 2: they were at any time in the season. It's the
- 5:00Speaker 2: best like two or three quarters Georgia played all year.
- 5:04Speaker 2: And he wasn't ready. He shouldn't have been ready. Like
- 5:07Speaker 2: by any definition of the word ready and any reasonable expectation,
- 5:12Speaker 2: that's probably what you should have seen. He looked stunned.
- 5:15Speaker 2: He looked like things were moving too fast. He looked
- 5:16Speaker 2: like Quinn Ewers yesterday, which is what happens when somebody
- 5:19Speaker 2: jumps up a level in competition. I don't think we're
- 5:22Speaker 2: going to necessarily be totally ready for what you see
- 5:24Speaker 2: because or aware of what he's truly capable of. Because
- 5:28Speaker 2: have you looked at the first month of their season?
- 5:30Speaker 2: They do get off to a big start against Ohio State,
- 5:32Speaker 2: mind you. That is Ohio State with a new defensive
- 5:35Speaker 2: coordinator replacing a lot of people. However, that's still going
- 5:38Speaker 2: to be on the road. It's still going to be
- 5:41Speaker 2: very intimidating. And it's still going to be at a
- 5:44Speaker 2: speed that he's not entirely familiar with. But the next
- 5:47Speaker 2: three weeks, the next three weeks of the schedule is
- 5:49Speaker 2: where we might start lying to ourselves about him being
- 5:52Speaker 2: maybe better. We'll come out of Ohio State and he
- 5:54Speaker 2: might look terrible. He really might. I don't think he
- 5:56Speaker 2: will because if you know Steve Sarkeesian, he's going to
- 5:59Speaker 2: give his quarterback a lot of easy reads. We're going
- 6:00Speaker 2: to see a lot of throws to the flat. We're
- 6:02Speaker 2: going to see a lot of swing passes. We're going
- 6:03Speaker 2: to see a lot of, you know, easy boots and
- 6:05Speaker 2: play action to get him comfortable and get him some completions.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Those next three weeks, though, that's where we really might
- 6:10Speaker 2: start lying to ourselves because they play San Jose State.
- 6:13Speaker 2: They play Sam Houston and they play UTEP. Those three
- 6:17Speaker 2: schools are going to balloon his stats. It's very good
- 6:21Speaker 2: for him, by the way. That's exactly what I would want.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Like if you were a quarterback and you were going
- 6:25Speaker 2: for the first part of the season, what would you want? Hey,
- 6:27Speaker 2: I want to throw 15 times against Ohio state and
- 6:30Speaker 2: hand the ball off a lot. Great idea. Great idea.
- 6:33Speaker 2: And then for the next three weeks, I want cupcakes.
- 6:35Speaker 2: I want to just sort of build my confidence. I
- 6:37Speaker 2: want to stack stats. I want to look maybe better
- 6:39Speaker 2: than I'm going to look later in the season, because
- 6:42Speaker 2: I'm going to need that. It's a longer season than
- 6:44Speaker 2: it's ever been before. I'm going to need that confidence.
- 6:46Speaker 2: And I'm going to need to frankly take some second
- 6:48Speaker 2: halves off. If I can avoid those hits, if I
- 6:51Speaker 2: can avoid, you know, the trauma of the game itself
- 6:53Speaker 2: and save it for later, I will. So, um, It's
- 6:57Speaker 2: intriguing to me. I don't think you're actually going to
- 6:59Speaker 2: get a decent read on him until the second month,
- 7:02Speaker 2: third month of the season.
- 7:03Speaker 1: So our kind of new reality television model of following sports,
- 7:08Speaker 1: which is to say, for whatever reason, we find familiar
- 7:12Speaker 1: people or familiar names and then they become our obsessions.
- 7:15Speaker 1: This is part of the Shador Sanders situation, right? It
- 7:18Speaker 1: is the way we feel about his father carrying down
- 7:22Speaker 1: to him and that fame conferring upon him. Part of
- 7:25Speaker 1: what is fascinating about Arch Manning, obviously, is he's not
- 7:28Speaker 1: even a son. He's a nephew, right? He is a nephew.
- 7:33Speaker 1: He is Cooper's son. Cooper, who, if I'm not mistaken,
- 7:38Speaker 1: I don't know if he still does, but he used
- 7:40Speaker 1: to have a podcast called Soup with Coop, which is,
- 7:44Speaker 1: by the way, your reinforcement of how much different it
- 7:47Speaker 1: is when it's a white man named Coop and a
- 7:49Speaker 1: black man named Cooper. It means if we call you
- 7:53Speaker 1: Coop because it's your first name, it's something very different
- 7:56Speaker 1: than if we call you Coop and it's your last name. Right.
- 7:59Speaker 1: What I find interesting about Archie Manning in the historical
- 8:02Speaker 1: sense is unlike his brothers, he is actually similar to
- 8:07Speaker 1: his father and his grandfather, rather. Right. I always felt
- 8:10Speaker 1: like Archie Manning had to be terribly ashamed of how
- 8:13Speaker 1: slow his boys were. It has to be very similar
- 8:17Speaker 1: to when like black people raise their kids against white
- 8:19Speaker 1: people and they look up and they can't dance. Right? Like,
- 8:22Speaker 1: oh man, I knew a woman once who told me
- 8:24Speaker 1: that situation. She told me that her daddy looked at
- 8:27Speaker 1: her dancing with white people and immediately put them in track.
- 8:30Speaker 1: because he figured that that would be the next step
- 8:33Speaker 1: to get him back to where he realized he had failed, man.
- 8:38Speaker 1: He tried to give him a better life, and in
- 8:40Speaker 1: some ways, he felt like he gave him a worse one.
- 8:43Speaker 1: But there are reasons to have questions about Arch. There's
- 8:46Speaker 1: been a longstanding belief that much of the hype is
- 8:48Speaker 1: just centered around his last name. I've seen the talent
- 8:51Speaker 1: with him moving. Like I say, that's where he reminds
- 8:54Speaker 1: you of his father. He could really go. i've seen
- 8:57Speaker 1: no reason to believe in arch the passer as of
- 8:59Speaker 1: yet but we're talking about him like like we're almost
- 9:04Speaker 1: talking about him like you talked about andrew no not
- 9:06Speaker 1: like andrew luck going into year three because that was
- 9:08Speaker 1: its own different level of hype but it's still i
- 9:12Speaker 1: feel like it's not a what will arch be which
- 9:15Speaker 1: is what i think the it should be about a
- 9:17Speaker 1: question rather than anything declarative.
- 9:20Speaker 2: I think what you'll see And this is, again, people
- 9:23Speaker 2: pare down playbooks, then they pare down expectations as we go.
- 9:27Speaker 2: If the dude can run, this is college football. He's
- 9:32Speaker 2: going to run. That's it, right? Like, oh, hey, I
- 9:35Speaker 2: don't know. Maybe we need to bring him along with this.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Shut up. No, this is stupid. This is a very
- 9:40Speaker 2: simple game at its root. If he is primarily a runner,
- 9:44Speaker 2: then Steve Sarkeesian and that staff will use him as
- 9:46Speaker 2: a runner. And that is the thing. Now, maybe some
- 9:49Speaker 2: of those things are going to be RPOs, maybe some
- 9:52Speaker 2: of those things are going to be a lot of
- 9:53Speaker 2: sort of simplified run, you know, run pass reads that
- 9:56Speaker 2: he's going to be able to do. And that's fine.
- 9:59Speaker 2: That's fine. leave that to the NFL scouts to worry
- 10:02Speaker 2: about what Texas is charged with is winning and if
- 10:05Speaker 2: that's what he is if he is a runner first
- 10:09Speaker 2: then that's what he's gonna be this is my Bob
- 10:12Speaker 2: Cousy take when somebody's like man Streets weren't ready for
- 10:15Speaker 2: Bob Cousy. You don't know what he was putting down. Okay,
- 10:17Speaker 2: my thing is this. Archie Manning, you have no idea
- 10:21Speaker 2: what an athlete Archie Manning was prior to the Superdome
- 10:25Speaker 2: eating his knees. That's really what I want to get to.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Well, the Superdome and all the opponents for the Sais
- 10:32Speaker 1: could do nothing to help.
- 10:34Speaker 2: No, they could do absolutely nothing. They destroyed that man's legs.
- 10:38Speaker 2: But one of my great white whales, if I can
- 10:41Speaker 2: find it, is a full copy of the game tape
- 10:43Speaker 2: for that 69 Ole Miss Alabama game because that is
- 10:46Speaker 2: the one where he goes full Johnny Manziel. We don't
- 10:50Speaker 2: have a full copy of the game tape for that game.
- 10:54Speaker 2: I think he throws for over 300. He runs for
- 10:57Speaker 2: over 100. He is a monster in that game. A Manning,
- 11:01Speaker 2: I said that out loud, a member of the Manning
- 11:03Speaker 2: family running all over everyone's ass and looking like Grease
- 11:07Speaker 2: Lightning out there.
- 11:08Speaker 1: That's what I keep telling people, man. He had to
- 11:11Speaker 1: be a little bit ashamed while also being like Boys,
- 11:16Speaker 1: the path to safety is in the pocket.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Yeah, he had to do that because that's why he limps. Now,
- 11:22Speaker 2: I think Arch needs to go ahead and at one
- 11:26Speaker 2: point play outside of the playbook. I think that's it.
- 11:29Speaker 2: And I think they know that too. Because if you
- 11:32Speaker 2: want to unleash all of that talent in a form
- 11:34Speaker 2: that everyone can work with and understand, he won't necessarily
- 11:38Speaker 2: be playing within the play, within the X's and O's.
- 11:40Speaker 2: He's going to have to improv. He's going to have
- 11:44Speaker 2: to do some things that are probably going to make
- 11:45Speaker 2: everyone real nervous. It makes coaches nervous when they don't
- 11:47Speaker 2: know what's going to happen on a play. But he's
- 11:50Speaker 2: not totally ready to just operate yet. And this is
- 11:53Speaker 2: not controversial. None of this should be controversial. This is
- 11:56Speaker 2: going to be a first-year full-time starter. Not ready to
- 11:59Speaker 2: operate what can be a kind of complex offense. And
- 12:02Speaker 2: I think that's, again, something that the staff knows and
- 12:06Speaker 2: that down the road you'll see. I mean, I'm excited
- 12:10Speaker 2: because I like these kind of quarterbacks. I do feel
- 12:13Speaker 2: bad for him because when I went to the game
- 12:15Speaker 2: in Austin last year, I saw nothing but Arch Manning jerseys.
- 12:20Speaker 2: He was not the starter, Bo. It was all– Quinn
- 12:23Speaker 2: Ewers was the starter and had been the starter and
- 12:25Speaker 2: had put in a lot of hours and time and
- 12:29Speaker 2: played a lot of games for the Longhorns, and it
- 12:30Speaker 2: was all Manning jerseys. There's no way that in some
- 12:34Speaker 2: way he can't disappoint if they don't– heisman national title
- 12:38Speaker 2: there will be people who will be disappointed.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Well first of all let's not forget quinn ewers came
- 12:43Speaker 1: into college as a bfd himself right and to be
- 12:47Speaker 1: fair to quinn transferred in after i believe he made
- 12:52Speaker 1: some bad decisions but he transferred to texas where he
- 12:55Speaker 1: was probably going to go anyway but he jumped out
- 12:57Speaker 1: to get some short money on some nil and then
- 12:59Speaker 1: couldn't beat out cj stroud At that point, I think
- 13:02Speaker 1: you stay at Ohio State because you're going to be
- 13:04Speaker 1: throwing to something incredible. But instead, he came back to Texas,
- 13:07Speaker 1: and look, it worked out okay. But Quinn's got to
- 13:11Speaker 1: be the best quarterback Texas has since Colt left, right?
- 13:14Speaker 2: I think so.
- 13:16Speaker 1: And everybody's talking about Arch. And it has little to
- 13:20Speaker 1: nothing to do with Arch actually playing football. It is
- 13:24Speaker 1: the damnedest thing. Never seen anything quite like it. But
- 13:28Speaker 1: the thing for Arch, they're a loaded team. And they're
- 13:31Speaker 1: loaded in a way where it's not like when Texas
- 13:34Speaker 1: has been loaded in the past and you still think
- 13:36Speaker 1: somebody's going to push them around, right? They had literally
- 13:39Speaker 1: four seasons around Mac where they did not get pushed around.
- 13:43Speaker 1: And in those four seasons, they lost a combined two
- 13:47Speaker 1: games or three games. Like that's how that goes, right?
- 13:52Speaker 1: This is a Sarkeesian, like they did with so many
- 13:56Speaker 1: programs around the country did, especially in the SEC. get
- 13:59Speaker 1: your Saban guy and hope that you can implement a
- 14:02Speaker 1: Saban like system and hope for the best. It has
- 14:06Speaker 1: not worked out well for everybody. It's working out pretty
- 14:10Speaker 1: well for these guys so far.
- 14:12Speaker 2: If you look at their depth chart and most depth charts,
- 14:16Speaker 2: I use the same thing everyone else uses. I use
- 14:19Speaker 2: our lads.com. If you go there, you can look at
- 14:21Speaker 2: the depth charts and they're pretty frequently updated. They're pretty
- 14:24Speaker 2: up to date. And if you look at any, contemporary
- 14:27Speaker 2: teams chart anyone right now in 2025 you're going to
- 14:30Speaker 2: see a lot of orange orange is the color that
- 14:32Speaker 2: they indicate to um that you have a transfer coming
- 14:37Speaker 2: in for 2025 most rosters look like half orange half
- 14:42Speaker 2: some some more so some like two-thirds orange ironically the
- 14:46Speaker 2: burnt orange of texas two two transfers this is a
- 14:51Speaker 2: homegrown home pick team that has a lot of experience
- 14:54Speaker 2: coming back, a lot of native talent, a lot of
- 14:57Speaker 2: talent that the staff handpicked, recruited, and brought in with
- 15:01Speaker 2: great intent. Wisner running back alone is a concern. They
- 15:06Speaker 2: are going to be heinous to face this year. So
- 15:10Speaker 2: there is an element of don't screw this up. One
- 15:13Speaker 2: more thing on Quinn Ewers, by the way, we don't
- 15:15Speaker 2: talk about injuries in college enough. That guy had some
- 15:18Speaker 2: injuries that just changed the way he threw. I swear...
- 15:22Speaker 2: The deep ball that he threw in year one versus
- 15:25Speaker 2: the deep ball that he threw in year four, those
- 15:27Speaker 2: are two different things. I think he lost something in
- 15:31Speaker 2: the arm through injury, and I'm not exactly sure where
- 15:33Speaker 2: along the line. I don't have his injury chart with
- 15:37Speaker 2: the little body outlined with all of the little Xs
- 15:39Speaker 2: and red marks on it, but I swear injuries changed
- 15:43Speaker 2: his potential at the college level and then consequently at
- 15:47Speaker 2: the pro level. The dude you see now, is not
- 15:50Speaker 2: the dude I think you would have seen had a
- 15:52Speaker 2: couple of injuries and some luck gone one way or
- 15:54Speaker 2: the other.
- 15:54Speaker 1: All right. Now the Texas transfer thing you mentioned is
- 15:57Speaker 1: interesting because the thing I tell people that's a little
- 16:00Speaker 1: bit tricky about that job is that, and look, things
- 16:04Speaker 1: have changed now, the money and the way the money works,
- 16:06Speaker 1: where the geography is, It's still going to be a
- 16:11Speaker 1: dominant factor in where guys go to school, but obviously
- 16:14Speaker 1: it's not as clear and clean as it used to be, right?
- 16:17Speaker 1: People are going to throw some bags around. People are
- 16:18Speaker 1: going to make some different decisions. Okay, cool. But players
- 16:22Speaker 1: typically go close to where they are from for a
- 16:24Speaker 1: number of reasons. The thing that is underrated about Texas
- 16:27Speaker 1: is that, and A & M also, but it's only
- 16:31Speaker 1: close to Texas. Yeah. Right. Like if you you have
- 16:35Speaker 1: to subsist on that program on local talent and nobody else,
- 16:38Speaker 1: by the way, can subsist only on local talent. But
- 16:41Speaker 1: even if you're in Georgia is maybe another program that can.
- 16:44Speaker 1: But by and large, you look at their roster and
- 16:45Speaker 1: they're like, no, we don't. We get the best players
- 16:47Speaker 1: from Georgia, but we got to go everywhere else to
- 16:49Speaker 1: get them. Yeah, but they're close to Charlotte. Right. They're
- 16:52Speaker 1: close to Alabama. They're close to North Florida. They're close
- 16:54Speaker 1: to a whole bunch of places. Austin is close to Houston, Dallas.
- 17:00Speaker 1: And like a circle that kind of goes around there.
- 17:03Speaker 1: That is what they're close to. If they're not getting
- 17:05Speaker 1: it done with local players, it's going to be a problem.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Yeah. And if you doubt the Texas thing is real,
- 17:10Speaker 2: that it's not, that Texas isn't close to anything but Texas,
- 17:13Speaker 2: go look at what they've had to do in Lubbock
- 17:14Speaker 2: to get talent there. Go look at the money that
- 17:16Speaker 2: they've had to drop.
- 17:17Speaker 1: And that's close to less because that ain't even close
- 17:20Speaker 1: to Houston and Dallas.
- 17:20Speaker 2: No, it's close to the moon. That's it. It's the
- 17:24Speaker 2: FBS program that is furthest away from all the other
- 17:26Speaker 2: FBS programs. Like if you triangulate it, the most remote
- 17:29Speaker 2: one It's not Wyoming. It's not like your Boise's. No,
- 17:35Speaker 2: it's Lubbock. Lubbock is the one. And if you go
- 17:38Speaker 2: and look, they've had to drop a tremendous amount of
- 17:40Speaker 2: money just to get talent there. But the upside of
- 17:45Speaker 2: that is, you're right. If you're in Texas, you can
- 17:48Speaker 2: subsist on local talent. You can build a national champion
- 17:52Speaker 2: out of that talent. That's something that South Florida can't
- 17:54Speaker 2: even say anymore. Even Miami. Miami's always had to go
- 17:57Speaker 2: out of their way to get offensive line recruits because
- 18:00Speaker 2: they just don't have the same kind of offensive line recruits.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Go look at their prime lines of the 2000s. They're
- 18:06Speaker 2: getting guys from Canada. They're getting Martin Bibla to come
- 18:09Speaker 2: down to Miami, which easy sell, by the way. Great sell.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Texas has the same sell. Hey, are you tired of
- 18:16Speaker 2: being cold? Do you never want to be cold again?
- 18:19Speaker 2: Do you want to be rich and not cold? Come
- 18:23Speaker 2: on down. Come on down. Can you imagine? That's a
- 18:26Speaker 2: good deal. If you've been cold that long and not
- 18:29Speaker 2: had money and you're 18 years old and somebody's like, hey,
- 18:32Speaker 2: would you like to be big and strong for money?
- 18:35Speaker 2: Would you like to have, let's say, a sum, a
- 18:38Speaker 2: relatively modest sum for a left tackle at this point?
- 18:42Speaker 2: I'm going to pay you 500 grand to come play
- 18:44Speaker 2: in Austin.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Right?
- 18:46Speaker 2: Right. you come on down from whatever farm you just
- 18:49Speaker 2: walked off of and we'll bring you in. And all
- 18:51Speaker 2: of a sudden you're in Austin, Texas and you have
- 18:53Speaker 2: money you don't understand, right? You're like, at the end
- 18:56Speaker 2: of the month, I have that left?
- 19:00Speaker 1: That is actually an underrated part of the NIL thing.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Like what the first paycheck is like. Like I remember
- 19:06Speaker 1: when I was 21, I worked an internship at a
- 19:09Speaker 1: fairly large company. And I remember the internship paid $ 5, 400
- 19:17Speaker 1: a month before tax. It was like they pay you
- 19:21Speaker 1: like you had an MBA or something like that, okay?
- 19:23Speaker 1: And this is in the summer of 2002.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Good God.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, yes. And I'm staying at my parents' house, okay?
- 19:31Speaker 2: Oh.
- 19:33Speaker 1: So, the first check I got was a one-week check
- 19:38Speaker 1: because of my start date. And that one-week check was
- 19:43Speaker 1: for $ 1, 000. And I looked at my father and I
- 19:49Speaker 1: said to him, you know, I understand a little better
- 19:53Speaker 1: how it is that people sell out. And that was
- 19:56Speaker 1: over $ 1, 000. I know that for many of you, you've
- 19:59Speaker 1: heard this story before, but I've been telling this story
- 20:02Speaker 1: now for almost 25 years. And it still shocks me
- 20:05Speaker 1: to look back on how excited I was at $ 1, 000.
- 20:10Speaker 1: thousand dollars. These motherfuckers are getting taxes, checks after taxes
- 20:17Speaker 1: with like five figures before the dot.
- 20:21Speaker 2: I thought you were going to tell your dad, be like, listen,
- 20:24Speaker 2: you don't have to worry about that mortgage anymore. I
- 20:27Speaker 2: have a thousand dollars.
- 20:28Speaker 1: I got a thousand dollars now.
- 20:29Speaker 2: I'm going to make it happen.
- 20:30Speaker 1: Drake's on me.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Yeah. I love that for them. I despise any effort
- 20:37Speaker 2: to curb that. I think that that is that is
- 20:40Speaker 2: the best part of the current game is that we're
- 20:43Speaker 2: actually paying these players now. I also worry about whether
- 20:46Speaker 2: somebody is trying to sell them PS sixes, right? I
- 20:50Speaker 2: don't even think that's out yet. No, that's what this is.
- 20:52Speaker 2: It's only 10 grand. You can have one before anyone else.
- 20:55Speaker 2: And I've just written in Sharpie on the side of
- 20:57Speaker 2: a PS five, right?
- 20:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Finally guys can get money and show it right. Like
- 21:01Speaker 1: I was watching good fellows the other day and like
- 21:04Speaker 1: a college football player showed up to jewelry yard is like,
- 21:07Speaker 1: Oh buddy, pull it up with his, with his wife
- 21:08Speaker 1: in the mink.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Yeah, take that back.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Take it back. Buddy with the pink Cadillac on the curb.
- 21:13Speaker 2: It's in my mother's name. It's in my mother's name.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Like, what are you guys doing? What are you guys doing?
- 21:18Speaker 1: Before we get into break, I want to ask this
- 21:20Speaker 1: question right fast. And we'll talk a little more about
- 21:22Speaker 1: it after also, but we'll start now. Is it possible
- 21:27Speaker 1: to win a national championship and be on a hot seat?
- 21:31Speaker 1: Because Ryan Day is testing that. It's not a hot seat, right?
- 21:36Speaker 1: But it's definitely, there's still warmth.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Lukewarm. Just a little hint of warmth. Toasty. If you
- 21:44Speaker 2: got those heated seats in your car, one light. Not
- 21:47Speaker 2: three lights. You're on the one light setting. I don't know.
- 21:52Speaker 1: How many times? Is it five years in a row now?
- 21:54Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 21:55Speaker 1: You lost to Michigan five years in a row.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Well, let's see.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Including to the black guy.
- 22:00Speaker 2: They lost last year, which is the worst loss of
- 22:03Speaker 2: them all. That is the worst one. 13-10 to a
- 22:06Speaker 2: team that had no hope of moving the ball or scoring.
- 22:09Speaker 1: None.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Yes. So are you on the hot seat?
- 22:13Speaker 1: No.
- 22:13Speaker 2: You just won a national title. Do we still have
- 22:16Speaker 2: the same questions about how essential you are to the enterprise?
- 22:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:23Speaker 1: So the point I try to make to people is
- 22:27Speaker 1: there is only one Alabama. Put a pin in that.
- 22:30Speaker 2: Yeah. We'll come back.
- 22:33Speaker 1: John Cooper had that job for 13 years and beat
- 22:37Speaker 1: Michigan twice. You could say that things are things are
- 22:41Speaker 1: different now, but they're not right. Like if this is
- 22:43Speaker 1: a one win job, which is how we frequently think
- 22:46Speaker 1: of it being is a one win job. No, they're
- 22:49Speaker 1: actually a little more patient with that job than people realize.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Another job that's more patient than people realize is LSU,
- 22:55Speaker 1: which we think of in our heads as a 12
- 22:58Speaker 1: win program. But it's really an over under nine point five.
- 23:01Speaker 2: Right. Right.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Like they even even the Saban era. That's an over-under
- 23:08Speaker 1: 9.5 win program, right? Ohio State's not going to fire
- 23:13Speaker 1: a coach after going 11-2. No. But he might want
- 23:17Speaker 1: to quit. Not that he will actually quit. He just
- 23:20Speaker 1: may have days where he desires to quit if he
- 23:23Speaker 1: loses that job again. By the way, they're favored to
- 23:25Speaker 1: beat Texas. It's going to be number one versus number
- 23:26Speaker 1: two to open the season, and they are favored because
- 23:29Speaker 1: they have the game at home.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Yeah, and should be. And should be. Like, they are.
- 23:35Speaker 2: I mean, defending champion doesn't mean anything when it comes
- 23:38Speaker 2: to this year, but that place at home, rosters that
- 23:42Speaker 2: are comparable in terms of overall talent, that to me
- 23:48Speaker 2: is fair. I think the thing that when we talk
- 23:51Speaker 2: about Ryan Day is we wonder exactly what do you
- 23:54Speaker 2: do here because the apparatus that recruits at Ohio State
- 23:58Speaker 2: and brings all of that talent in, the pipeline, everyone
- 24:02Speaker 2: who is greasing the wheels is If you fire the
- 24:04Speaker 2: head coach, they're not going anywhere. They're all there. I'm
- 24:11Speaker 2: here to tell you they're on board. They're fine. Okay.
- 24:15Speaker 2: That's the machine. It is a football factory and the
- 24:19Speaker 2: floor managers and foreman are on duty and will stay
- 24:23Speaker 2: on duty. Okay. The checks will continue to come. The
- 24:26Speaker 2: bank is still open. So what is the difference that
- 24:30Speaker 2: Brian day provides? Well, Brian day did win a national
- 24:33Speaker 2: title and, did a pretty nice job of managing that roster.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Apparently in this era, he's pretty good at managing egos
- 24:40Speaker 2: and being a pro style kind of like coach, which
- 24:46Speaker 2: is interesting because he appears to be having no fun
- 24:49Speaker 2: doing it. So maybe he is a pro style coach.
- 24:50Speaker 2: You know, NFL coaches just all look like they're like
- 24:52Speaker 2: seconds from death. That's Ryan Day. If you want any
- 24:56Speaker 2: argument for Ohio State being a pro team, It's that
- 24:58Speaker 2: I think their coach would probably walk away for like
- 25:02Speaker 2: a dollar more than what he's doing now. Just leave,
- 25:05Speaker 2: which may be what happens. He may just end up
- 25:07Speaker 2: like resigning out of concern for his well-being because it
- 25:11Speaker 2: is that stressful a job. I think there are some
- 25:14Speaker 2: things that you can look at this season and go,
- 25:16Speaker 2: they have downgraded. And that's in management. That's it. Like
- 25:19Speaker 2: there's no way of getting around the fact that– Yes,
- 25:22Speaker 2: they lost Chip Kelly and they lost Jim Knowles. That
- 25:24Speaker 2: is their offensive coordinator and their defensive coordinator. The pieces
- 25:27Speaker 2: are still incredible. You do not have to worry about that.
- 25:30Speaker 2: But last year they managed an offensive line where they
- 25:32Speaker 2: had to shuffle a couple of things around. They had
- 25:33Speaker 2: to figure some things out. All right. They had to
- 25:35Speaker 2: manage all of that talent and getting everyone the ball, which,
- 25:39Speaker 2: you know, that is a Phil Jackson tier skill in
- 25:42Speaker 2: terms of balancing everyone's feelings and making sure that everyone gets,
- 25:46Speaker 2: you know, enough carries and feels like that they're, you know,
- 25:49Speaker 2: validated and happy. The guy who's doing that this year
- 25:54Speaker 2: is their wide receivers coach, their former wide receivers coach,
- 25:58Speaker 2: Mike Hartline. I'm sorry, Brian Hartline. But Brian Hartline hasn't
- 26:03Speaker 2: really done this job like this before. He hasn't done
- 26:07Speaker 2: it the whole way. It's his shop now. That's going
- 26:12Speaker 2: to look different. They'll be like, oh, the playbook's the same.
- 26:15Speaker 2: It's never exactly the same because the person handling it
- 26:18Speaker 2: and the person running it will put a slightly different
- 26:20Speaker 2: stamp on things. He's been there, obviously, but it's going
- 26:24Speaker 2: to look a little different.
- 26:25Speaker 1: He also seems, by the way, to very clearly be
- 26:28Speaker 1: the best wide receivers coach on earth.
- 26:30Speaker 2: On earth. And a great recruiter.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Has to be. Has to be. All those guys, for
- 26:35Speaker 1: those people listening, those are all him.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Which, like, if you had any incentive to keep someone,
- 26:41Speaker 2: I know ambition's a thing, but if you had any
- 26:42Speaker 2: incentive to keep somebody just doing one thing, he would
- 26:45Speaker 2: be that guy. Right? You're like, oh, you're overpaying your
- 26:48Speaker 2: wide receivers coach. Am I? No. Have you seen what
- 26:54Speaker 2: we've done? Have you seen the talent we found? Have
- 26:57Speaker 2: you seen what we just got in the last year
- 26:59Speaker 2: and a half? Jeremiah Smith, we have a disgusting run
- 27:03Speaker 2: of talent at wide receiver. And the guy who we're
- 27:06Speaker 2: going to talk about this year may be the best
- 27:07Speaker 2: one of all. That's nuts.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Well, that's what I was going to say. And I'll
- 27:11Speaker 1: say this right before we go into this break. What
- 27:13Speaker 1: are you talking about? We got to figure out how
- 27:15Speaker 1: to get everybody else the ball. Okay, so when you
- 27:17Speaker 1: had Henderson and you had Junkers last year and you
- 27:20Speaker 1: got to figure out running backs and all of that, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 27:22Speaker 1: I get you. Let me tell you something. This year,
- 27:24Speaker 1: we out here running that Bel Air. You know what
- 27:27Speaker 1: I'm saying? We running this like Amari Cooper when he
- 27:29Speaker 1: was at Alabama.
- 27:30Speaker 2: Got a Randy ratio, yeah.
- 27:32Speaker 1: Yeah, we're just going to pass the ball to that
- 27:34Speaker 1: dude as many times as we possibly can because I
- 27:38Speaker 1: promise you he's open.
- 27:39Speaker 2: It's never a bad idea. On the defensive side of
- 27:42Speaker 2: the ball, too, I don't know if you all know this,
- 27:44Speaker 2: Matt Patricia is their defensive coordinator.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Okay, that's a problem.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Might be an issue.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Okay.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 27:51Speaker 1: Cause for concern, it's all here. Coming up next, we're
- 27:54Speaker 1: going to talk about the biggest mystery that college football

- 29:22Speaker 1: All right, we are back all with Spencer Hall getting
- 29:24Speaker 1: ready for college football season. Does anybody have any idea
- 29:28Speaker 1: what there is to expect from North Carolina this year?
- 29:30Speaker 2: No. I really don't. And I say that college football
- 29:36Speaker 2: is um a sport of of systems and you know
- 29:42Speaker 2: even more so than like than like pro football because
- 29:45Speaker 2: you have so much talent prospecting to do you have
- 29:49Speaker 2: so much management and you have so much to organize
- 29:51Speaker 2: in terms of how things work day to day and
- 29:56Speaker 2: what happens in the field isn't as complex as what
- 29:58Speaker 2: happens in the nfl it's not like plays are simpler
- 30:01Speaker 2: schemes are simpler, but I think there's an added level
- 30:04Speaker 2: of complexity in terms of, of your roster management in
- 30:08Speaker 2: terms of now we actually have payroll management and you
- 30:12Speaker 2: can call it back. Cause that's what it is. And
- 30:14Speaker 2: then the fact that you have to coexist with this
- 30:16Speaker 2: university and all the weird demands, like everyone kind of
- 30:19Speaker 2: has to cosplay as a student, right? Like, Hey, I'm
- 30:22Speaker 2: going to go do school stuff. Now I've got a backpack. Okay.
- 30:28Speaker 2: You know, Cool. Cool. That's all part of the deal there.
- 30:36Speaker 2: And I don't know what Bill Belichick has in the
- 30:40Speaker 2: bag for that element of it. Sometimes teams just forget
- 30:44Speaker 2: how to do everything all at once. I've seen it.
- 30:48Speaker 2: I have seen it. I've seen it with my own team.
- 30:51Speaker 2: I'm a Florida fan. And in 2010, when Urban Meyer
- 30:56Speaker 2: came back from his breakdown, that team all of a
- 30:59Speaker 2: sudden Didn't know how to do anything. Lost all the coaches.
- 31:02Speaker 2: Lost everyone who sort of remembered how to do things.
- 31:05Speaker 2: And they came out game one and you went, oh, no.
- 31:07Speaker 3: Oh, no.
- 31:07Speaker 2: They forgot how to play football. Like that might happen.
- 31:10Speaker 2: UNC might roll out against Charlotte and we have no
- 31:14Speaker 2: idea what they're doing. Like that might happen. I don't
- 31:17Speaker 2: think that will happen. I think they'll be competent. But,
- 31:20Speaker 2: you know, the idea that they're going to be great
- 31:22Speaker 2: is absurd. Like look at the roster. Look at what
- 31:24Speaker 2: they've got. Look how bad they were on defense at
- 31:26Speaker 2: times last year. Look how ineffective or inconsistent they were
- 31:30Speaker 2: on offense at times last year. I don't think it's
- 31:34Speaker 2: reasonable to expect them to be good. I think they
- 31:37Speaker 2: might be average. And that's probably what you should expect
- 31:40Speaker 2: in year one for most coaching staffs. And I think
- 31:43Speaker 2: that's what you can expect out of this one. The
- 31:45Speaker 2: idea that he'll be different than any coach at this
- 31:48Speaker 2: level is absurd to me, especially when you've seen pro
- 31:50Speaker 2: coaches come back to college and be perfectly average, if
- 31:55Speaker 2: not bad.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Yeah, it's going to be interesting because they've spent a
- 31:58Speaker 1: lot of money, at least North Carolina's idea of a
- 32:02Speaker 1: lot of money, between Belichick and various things that he
- 32:05Speaker 1: has wanted to get that program off the ground. I
- 32:09Speaker 1: have said many times what did him in with the
- 32:12Speaker 1: Patriots was poor talent evaluation. And he is now in
- 32:16Speaker 1: a sport that is about talent evaluation in a much
- 32:20Speaker 1: different way because it is much more based on present
- 32:24Speaker 1: value and forecasting future value. You know, is it different?
- 32:28Speaker 1: It also would then require Belichick to do a lot
- 32:30Speaker 1: more leaning on other people because you just can't keep
- 32:32Speaker 1: up with everything that you need to keep up with.
- 32:34Speaker 1: I remember one of the first big transfers he got
- 32:36Speaker 1: came in from Holy Cross, which made me very nervous.
- 32:39Speaker 2: Right.
- 32:40Speaker 1: I was like, here we go. Big brain Bill. He's
- 32:42Speaker 1: out here trying to overthink what this situation is. He
- 32:47Speaker 1: is also Bill Belichick. And my concern with him is
- 32:52Speaker 1: asking a college professor to teach pre-algebra. does not always
- 32:58Speaker 1: work out so well. Can he come down to the
- 33:00Speaker 1: level and the capacity that the teenager has and recognize
- 33:05Speaker 1: the actual discipline that the teenagers are going to produce?
- 33:08Speaker 1: I think that's number one there. Number two, you can't
- 33:13Speaker 1: scheme up defense in college. Not really, right? You, like,
- 33:18Speaker 1: every now and then, like, whoever the first people were
- 33:20Speaker 1: that came up with, like, those 3-3-5s or, like, Charlie
- 33:23Speaker 1: Strong with the 4-2. Like, you could come up with
- 33:25Speaker 1: a paradigm change. Maybe they get you ahead of things
- 33:28Speaker 1: and works with what your shortcomings are in talent. But overall,
- 33:32Speaker 1: if you don't have the boys, you can't play defense,
- 33:34Speaker 1: especially not in college.
- 33:35Speaker 2: Well, I... My... I'm going to speak out of turn
- 33:40Speaker 2: here for any coach, but here's what I have observed.
- 33:43Speaker 2: And it is this, that at times, and by the way,
- 33:46Speaker 2: this is, I'm roundabout quoting Bill Belichick here, that when
- 33:49Speaker 2: you get to the third and the fourth quarter, you
- 33:51Speaker 2: have gone from 80 plays on your sheet on both
- 33:54Speaker 2: sides of the ball to two. Like there's only, there's
- 33:58Speaker 2: probably three or four plays that are going to work.
- 34:00Speaker 2: And in college, if you got those guys, and in
- 34:02Speaker 2: the NFL, if you have those guys, but in college,
- 34:04Speaker 2: if you've got those guys, you'd be stupid not to
- 34:06Speaker 2: run them. I want you to go watch Georgia. Go
- 34:08Speaker 2: watch Georgia. Okay. The best managed program. of the last
- 34:11Speaker 2: five or six years of college football. And what you
- 34:14Speaker 2: need to watch is what they do when they're in
- 34:15Speaker 2: trouble and they really need to like bear down and
- 34:18Speaker 2: fix things. They go play like cover one. They play
- 34:21Speaker 2: like basic stuff, pretty basic. And then they just kick
- 34:24Speaker 2: your ass. So when in doubt, be big. When in doubt,
- 34:29Speaker 2: be strong. And when in doubt, be mean. And I
- 34:32Speaker 2: think that's something that Belichick's probably going to hone in on,
- 34:36Speaker 2: but he doesn't have those guys. So if it goes
- 34:40Speaker 2: to a matter of scheme, it won't matter because one,
- 34:43Speaker 2: his team probably won't be able to pull it off.
- 34:45Speaker 2: You know, you talk to, you talk to trainers and
- 34:47Speaker 2: my favorite things, he goes, yeah, if you go to
- 34:48Speaker 2: like one of those small smart schools, they understand the
- 34:51Speaker 2: concept immediately and they can't do it. If you go
- 34:53Speaker 2: to like a big FBS program, like a top 10 program,
- 34:57Speaker 2: they can do whatever you ask them to do, whatever
- 35:00Speaker 2: it is instantly, but they might not understand it. That's,
- 35:04Speaker 2: that's the deal. And I think that's the gap that
- 35:06Speaker 2: Belichick is going to have to bridge because in the
- 35:08Speaker 2: NFL you can cherry pick, big, smart, you can cherry
- 35:13Speaker 2: pick big, smart, big, smart, fast every single time in college,
- 35:17Speaker 2: they might have one of the three. And if they've
- 35:19Speaker 2: got two, they're an all American. And if they got big, smart, fast,
- 35:22Speaker 2: they're an NFL guy, which is 1% of the population
- 35:26Speaker 2: of FBS players. So it's interesting to me, the hiring
- 35:30Speaker 2: of some of the guys that he's brought on board
- 35:32Speaker 2: who just feel like boys just feel like his boys
- 35:35Speaker 2: that doesn't inspire confidence. It doesn't. And again, that's not
- 35:39Speaker 2: against bill. That's against anyone. If you just bring in
- 35:41Speaker 2: a bunch of your dudes, right? Like if you have
- 35:43Speaker 2: anything to worry about at Georgia, for instance, it's the
- 35:45Speaker 2: fact that you go, Hey, all these guys know Kirby
- 35:47Speaker 2: and play with them in the nineties. Ah, like that
- 35:50Speaker 2: just never organizationally. That doesn't feel great.
- 35:53Speaker 1: Right.
- 35:53Speaker 2: Even if the results are still pretty much on par, I,
- 35:56Speaker 2: you know, I don't like that. I like it when
- 35:58Speaker 2: it feels a little more professional. Um, you know, cause
- 36:00Speaker 2: that to me seems like a better environment for like
- 36:04Speaker 2: ideas and managing your culture or whatever. That's really not
- 36:09Speaker 2: what you've seen at UNC. Like at UNC, it feels chummy.
- 36:12Speaker 2: It feels like they've hired a bunch of Belichick's old boys,
- 36:14Speaker 2: including Mike Lombardi. That's the one.
- 36:16Speaker 1: That's the one that tells me, that makes me feel
- 36:21Speaker 1: like this is an unserious operation.
- 36:22Speaker 2: Buddy, pal, pal. I'm going to bust out a pun.
- 36:26Speaker 2: Hold on. Let me reach deep into the Caucasian back here. Buddy,
- 36:31Speaker 2: do you think that's going to work out? Because I'm
- 36:33Speaker 2: going to tell you, as a neutral observer, that doesn't
- 36:36Speaker 2: seem like a great move. I just don't know where
- 36:39Speaker 2: it's worked, and that includes the NFL Network. Yeah, I've
- 36:44Speaker 2: seen the previous work, and counting on this to be
- 36:47Speaker 2: some kind of revolutionary organization that's going to redefine how
- 36:51Speaker 2: we do things at the college level. I heard that
- 36:55Speaker 2: at Arizona State when you brought in Herm Edwards.
- 36:57Speaker 1: That's right.
- 36:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think that's what we're going to end
- 37:00Speaker 2: up with. This feels like the over-under on wins is
- 37:02Speaker 2: seven and a half, and Vegas feels a lot smarter
- 37:05Speaker 2: than I do at this point.
- 37:06Speaker 1: Well, hold on. it would be so great if Bill
- 37:10Speaker 1: Belichick had his Antonio Pierce. A great all-time, like the
- 37:15Speaker 1: last great college football renegade because the rules are, and
- 37:19Speaker 1: Antonio was not down there doing renegade stuff with money.
- 37:23Speaker 1: He just had a complete and total absence of respect
- 37:29Speaker 1: for these silly NCAA rules. And that's how you get
- 37:33Speaker 1: Jayden Daniels to come to Arizona State, by the way.
- 37:36Speaker 2: Yeah. What was that man doing there? Like they had him–
- 37:40Speaker 2: if you watch with Jaden Daniels at Arizona State and
- 37:42Speaker 2: the things that they were asking him to do, he
- 37:43Speaker 2: gets to LSU, a place, by the way, not known
- 37:46Speaker 2: for being like revolutionary, not known for being super innovative,
- 37:49Speaker 2: just doing what everyone else does for the most part.
- 37:51Speaker 2: They got him there and they're like, oh, we should
- 37:53Speaker 2: just let you ball. That is not what he was
- 37:56Speaker 2: doing at Arizona State. Yeah, he could end up with
- 37:59Speaker 2: that guy. He could end up with an Antonio Pierce.
- 38:02Speaker 2: He could end up– the idea of Bill Belichick having
- 38:04Speaker 2: the kind of conversations that Nick Saban had, like where
- 38:06Speaker 2: he's making these nuts jokes, right? Because remember– remember nick
- 38:10Speaker 2: saban terrifying reputation but would also make a lot of
- 38:15Speaker 2: jokes about his nuts with players yes that's if you
- 38:18Speaker 2: want to know where water met its level eventually right
- 38:21Speaker 2: it would be that and i don't necessarily see bill
- 38:24Speaker 2: belichick being the same do you think they're going to
- 38:26Speaker 2: pick up on that dry new england wit right do
- 38:29Speaker 2: you do you think they're gonna do you think they're
- 38:31Speaker 2: gonna find that parsimony of words charming i don't think
- 38:35Speaker 2: that do your job is going to sell quite as
- 38:37Speaker 2: well at the college level particularly when their brains haven't
- 38:39Speaker 2: even really fully.
- 38:40Speaker 1: Formed right even if they're getting paid like that's the
- 38:43Speaker 1: thing that i think a lot of these coaches are
- 38:44Speaker 1: going to have to divorce themselves from though we're paying
- 38:47Speaker 1: you to do this it's not going to work like
- 38:49Speaker 1: you think it's just not because they're kids it doesn't
- 38:53Speaker 1: go this.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Way yeah like it's a lot like i think at
- 38:58Speaker 2: that point you think of a salary more as a
- 39:00Speaker 2: bunch of candy and a stocking than you do as
- 39:02Speaker 2: reward for your work you go oh i found this
- 39:04Speaker 2: yes And I think that is probably how the majority
- 39:08Speaker 2: of football players think of it, because it's certainly how
- 39:10Speaker 2: I thought about it when I was like 18 to 22.
- 39:12Speaker 2: You get a paycheck and go, I don't know what
- 39:13Speaker 2: that's for, but we're going to see.
- 39:16Speaker 1: So I'm going to say this right fast before we
- 39:18Speaker 1: get to our last topic. And it's only because you
- 39:20Speaker 1: mentioned the Urban Meyer 2010 season. And Ryan, LSU grad,
- 39:24Speaker 1: and I were talking about this the day that Urban
- 39:28Speaker 1: Meyer's tenure at Florida officially ended was not that first
- 39:32Speaker 1: game i can pinpoint it to a specific moment it
- 39:35Speaker 1: is when lsu played this game at the swap and
- 39:39Speaker 1: called a fake field goal that involved the punter i
- 39:42Speaker 1: mean the holder throwing the ball over his shoulder to
- 39:46Speaker 1: the kicker, who I believe walked in for a touchdown.
- 39:49Speaker 2: He did. It was a great call.
- 39:51Speaker 1: And in the postgame, when they asked Urban Meyer a
- 39:56Speaker 1: question about Les Miles, and all he could do was
- 40:00Speaker 1: wave his hand to shush the question away because Les
- 40:05Speaker 1: Miles broke that man's spirit that day. That was the
- 40:09Speaker 1: day it ended.
- 40:09Speaker 2: Cooked, fried, done. I thought the same thing when I
- 40:12Speaker 2: saw Matt Stafford heading into like some sort of quackery
- 40:16Speaker 2: Airstream trailer. And they're like, yeah, it's back hurt. So
- 40:17Speaker 2: he's going to get infrared treatment on it. You're like, Don, Don,
- 40:20Speaker 2: that man's like, no, don't you. But as Charles McDonald
- 40:24Speaker 2: would say, nobody used to have a bad back.
- 40:28Speaker 1: That's a great, Charles McDonald who has a bad back.
- 40:30Speaker 2: Who has a bad back. Younger than me. Oh yeah,
- 40:33Speaker 2: like I should call, like borrowing some lingo here, I
- 40:37Speaker 2: should call Charles McDonald unk. That is how old man
- 40:40Speaker 2: style works. Charles McDonald lives, and he talks about having
- 40:44Speaker 2: a bad back more than I do, and I'm much
- 40:45Speaker 2: older than Charles.
- 40:46Speaker 1: That is a great line. Some have had back injuries,
- 40:50Speaker 1: but you are correct. If you say you have a
- 40:51Speaker 1: bad back, nobody has a bad back.
- 40:53Speaker 3: J.A.
- 40:53Speaker 1: Adade always tells this story about this quote from Kobe
- 40:56Speaker 1: about taking charges that J.A. refers to as charges are
- 40:59Speaker 1: for suckers. And he asked Kobe about taking charges. He
- 41:03Speaker 1: was like, I saw Bird take a lot of charges.
- 41:05Speaker 1: He got a fucked up back, and that's Kobe talking,
- 41:08Speaker 1: not me. He's like, I saw Scottie Pippen take a
- 41:10Speaker 1: lot of charges. He's got a fucked up back. I
- 41:12Speaker 1: saw Dennis Rotman take a lot of charges. He's got
- 41:15Speaker 1: a fucked up back. I never saw Magic take any charges.
- 41:19Speaker 1: His back is just fine. I never saw Mike take
- 41:22Speaker 1: any charges. His back is just fine. He's like, I'm
- 41:27Speaker 1: not about to be on team bad back.
- 41:30Speaker 2: Coach K is like the king of take the charge, right?
- 41:33Speaker 2: You've seen Coach K laying on the court in the
- 41:35Speaker 2: middle of a game? Not taking a charge.
- 41:40Speaker 1: I would love to see a Duke old timers game
- 41:43Speaker 1: with just a bunch of people walking around with bad backs.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Let's go find out Shea Battier. How's that working?
- 41:49Speaker 2: I need to listen. Any running back who runs out
- 41:51Speaker 2: of bounds.
- 41:51Speaker 1: Kudos.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Kudos to you. OK, because you know what they are?
- 41:56Speaker 2: at yoga class playing a little pickleball getting a quick
- 42:00Speaker 2: 18 in have you seen eric dickerson looks.
- 42:02Speaker 1: Awesome franco harris rest in peace but franco harris considering
- 42:06Speaker 1: the era of football that he played in franco harris
- 42:09Speaker 1: made it a long way walking upright franco harris.
- 42:12Speaker 2: Was an innovator though innovator because no one at the
- 42:14Speaker 2: time was doing that franco was like yeah this is
- 42:16Speaker 2: stupid I'm going to be over here. They're like, you're
- 42:21Speaker 2: not a real man. I'll be a real man when
- 42:23Speaker 2: I'm 50.
- 42:24Speaker 1: As a fullback.
- 42:25Speaker 2: As a fullback.
- 42:26Speaker 1: Even a halfback. It was a fullback. How is this
- 42:28Speaker 1: even an option? How does the fullback have the option
- 42:32Speaker 1: to consistently run out of bounds?
- 42:33Speaker 2: The fullback, by the way, checking his spending on his app, right?
- 42:37Speaker 2: That's what he was doing. He was like, I've spent
- 42:39Speaker 2: $ 50 worth of contact today. Boys, I'm overdrawn. Stepping out
- 42:42Speaker 2: of bounds.
- 42:43Speaker 1: I bet Ted Gann feels excellent every day he wakes up.
- 42:46Speaker 2: Oh, Jerry Rice? Like Jerry Rice. You know, go look
- 42:51Speaker 2: up Jerry Rice big hits. It's a very short YouTube video.
- 42:55Speaker 2: It is.
- 42:56Speaker 3: It is.
- 42:56Speaker 1: It's like looking up people who dunked on Tim Duncan.
- 42:58Speaker 1: Not a lot of those. He did it the opposite
- 43:00Speaker 1: way of Shaq, where Shaq was just going to take
- 43:02Speaker 1: you to the ground.
- 43:04Speaker 2: Yeah. Tim Duncan was Captain Technique. By the way, Tim Duncan,
- 43:08Speaker 2: side note, cut this if you want. I hadn't seen
- 43:11Speaker 2: the Bill Russell video with him. I pray in life
- 43:15Speaker 2: to get a compliment as half as good as that.
- 43:17Speaker 2: Where Bill Russell says, yeah, Jackie Robinson asked me to
- 43:19Speaker 2: be a pallbearer at his funeral because he said I
- 43:21Speaker 2: was his favorite athlete. And that's what you are to me.
- 43:24Speaker 2: That's what he said to Tim Duncan. I would have cried.
- 43:29Speaker 1: On the spot. I would have cried. I now hear
- 43:32Speaker 1: that and I want to say to Tim Duncan. What'd
- 43:35Speaker 1: you go do for the people after that, brother? You
- 43:38Speaker 1: got to step this shit up now, homeboy.
- 43:41Speaker 2: Is it not a very Tim Duncan thing to hear
- 43:43Speaker 2: that though and go, wow. And then like next day
- 43:46Speaker 2: be like, oh, I don't know. I'm just going to
- 43:48Speaker 2: hang out. Pretty cool. Pretty cool. Yeah. Yeah.
- 43:51Speaker 1: It was all right. So you and I have talked
- 43:56Speaker 1: about this for a while and it still worked out.
- 43:59Speaker 1: We have a whole generation of people who really still
- 44:02Speaker 1: don't know what this Alabama thing truly means. because Nick
- 44:06Speaker 1: Saban kept the Wolves at bay. He was so good,
- 44:10Speaker 1: so consistently, for so long that we never saw Alabama
- 44:15Speaker 1: get there. Keep in mind, the one time Bear Bryant
- 44:19Speaker 1: had a bad season after their little segregation has gone
- 44:23Speaker 1: too far period, and they got the wishbone in and
- 44:27Speaker 1: then took everything back. Bear Bryant had one bad season,
- 44:30Speaker 1: and a month later, he died.
- 44:32Speaker 2: Yes! Yep.
- 44:35Speaker 1: Not exaggerate. Yeah. And he said that Alabama deserved a
- 44:39Speaker 1: better coach. And I know he meant that somewhat metaphorically,
- 44:42Speaker 1: but I also know he understood like even that monster
- 44:47Speaker 1: would eat, even him up last year, Alabama lost four games.
- 44:53Speaker 1: If somehow they lost four games this year, what does
- 44:58Speaker 1: that look like?
- 44:59Speaker 2: Bad. It's bad. It's it's, it's already bad. That's a,
- 45:03Speaker 2: It's not a riot type situation, but it's definitely disgruntled, unhappy,
- 45:08Speaker 2: and probably already thinking about the next thing if they
- 45:11Speaker 2: lose four games. It also depends on what four games
- 45:14Speaker 2: they are. Losing to Auburn is inexcusable. Losing to a
- 45:18Speaker 2: team that they think is a tier below them is inexcusable.
- 45:20Speaker 2: Losing to Tennessee. Let's put that watermark right there. If
- 45:24Speaker 2: they lose to Tennessee, who is formally a rival, but
- 45:28Speaker 2: not functionally a rival in the minds of most Alabama fans.
- 45:31Speaker 2: If they lose to Tennessee... again. And if they lose,
- 45:35Speaker 2: particularly in sort of a hard-nosed manner. Last year's Alabama team,
- 45:38Speaker 2: very weird because they are a transitional team. They were
- 45:41Speaker 2: kind of a platypus team. There's a lot of different
- 45:43Speaker 2: parts that didn't necessarily fit. Jalen Milrow was the quarterback,
- 45:46Speaker 2: and I think having a quarterback like Jalen Milrow when
- 45:49Speaker 2: he is obviously too talented not to play, and too
- 45:52Speaker 2: athletic not to play, but has limitations on his game,
- 45:56Speaker 2: that is you're going to be kind of a boom-bust team.
- 45:59Speaker 2: You're going to be the kind of team that sometimes
- 46:01Speaker 2: scores 35 and sometimes you score 13 because he was
- 46:05Speaker 2: that inconsistent, but that gifted at the same time. So
- 46:07Speaker 2: I think that they had the golden handcuffs of a
- 46:11Speaker 2: very gifted quarterback who couldn't exactly play the position the
- 46:14Speaker 2: way they wanted to. Now they're going to have a
- 46:17Speaker 2: less talented quarterback potentially, at least in terms of raw
- 46:21Speaker 2: athletic talent and potential, you know, Jalen Milrow.
- 46:24Speaker 1: He's a ghost of five-star pass worth noting.
- 46:27Speaker 3: Right.
- 46:27Speaker 2: Right. You know, like Jalen Milrow, 80-yard arm, capable of
- 46:32Speaker 2: busting a 70-yarder, and then also capable of just mismanaging
- 46:36Speaker 2: the offense because he couldn't operate it at the level
- 46:40Speaker 2: that the coaches wanted him to in terms of efficiency.
- 46:44Speaker 2: And that's all it is, is efficiency. When we're talking
- 46:46Speaker 2: about efficiency, it's take your check down, hit your check
- 46:48Speaker 2: down accurately. Recognize this. Get out of a bad play.
- 46:52Speaker 2: Get into a better play. Don't turn the ball over.
- 46:55Speaker 2: He was the kind of guy who They lived with
- 46:58Speaker 2: the bust so that they could enjoy the booms. But
- 47:02Speaker 2: that combined with, you know, some like a new regime
- 47:05Speaker 2: on defense, that'll get you four losses. That'll get you
- 47:07Speaker 2: some inconsistent play. They don't necessarily, this is still, by
- 47:12Speaker 2: the way, I don't want anybody to lose sight of this.
- 47:15Speaker 2: This is still a top five roster in college football
- 47:19Speaker 2: in terms of sheer raw talent. This is still nothing
- 47:24Speaker 2: but four and five stars, right? This is this is
- 47:26Speaker 2: nothing but if we're doing movies, this is nothing but
- 47:29Speaker 2: a bunch of Lawrence Arabias. This is nothing but a
- 47:31Speaker 2: bunch of Casablancas. Right. Like this is classics across the shelf.
- 47:36Speaker 2: So on that alone, you can't rule them out in
- 47:38Speaker 2: terms of national title contention. You can't rule them out
- 47:40Speaker 2: in terms of SEC championship contention. But what they look
- 47:44Speaker 2: like this year, it's it's going to be it's going
- 47:48Speaker 2: to look a lot like that Washington team offensively. Right. Because,
- 47:51Speaker 2: you know, they've got the band back together on the
- 47:53Speaker 2: coaching staff. You know, they have Ty Simpson at quarterback,
- 47:56Speaker 2: who I think is going to be a less spectacular
- 47:59Speaker 2: option than Milrow, but probably more more efficient in terms
- 48:03Speaker 2: of what they want down to down. They also have
- 48:07Speaker 2: Caden Proctor at left tackle. I need you to go
- 48:09Speaker 2: look up Caden Proctor. Yes. You might be able to
- 48:12Speaker 2: find him on Google Maps. Like he might be listed
- 48:15Speaker 2: as a building. He is. And I'm not like they've
- 48:18Speaker 2: had specimens at Alabama before. They've had guys. Who defy
- 48:23Speaker 2: what you believe a human being is capable of in
- 48:26Speaker 2: terms of size and power. Caden Proctor squatted 800 pounds.
- 48:31Speaker 1: Check your phone for what I just texted you about
- 48:33Speaker 1: Caden Proctor. You're not going to want to say it
- 48:36Speaker 1: out loud.
- 48:38Speaker 2: Can I say it out loud?
- 48:39Speaker 1: I'll let you look at it and make that decision.
- 48:42Speaker 2: I'm not going to.
- 48:43Speaker 1: I think you're going to vote against it. But just
- 48:44Speaker 1: look at what he says. Just look at what he says.
- 48:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:47Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm going to let the listener or viewer in
- 48:52Speaker 2: on this. I have a piece of information about Caden
- 48:54Speaker 2: Proctor and his family that would indicate to me that 6'7,
- 48:58Speaker 2: 369 with an 800-pound squat. is standard whatever the if
- 49:04Speaker 2: you go to the proctor family reunion there's a semi
- 49:07Speaker 2: truck there's a semi truck of food okay like the
- 49:11Speaker 2: cisco truck they back the whole thing.
- 49:13Speaker 1: Up he's not alone he's not alone but i tell
- 49:15Speaker 1: you this but whatever he gave, he's supposed to, because
- 49:17Speaker 1: here's Rob, here's Rob counting those losses that are going
- 49:19Speaker 1: to make Caden DeBoer regret his choices.
- 49:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:23Speaker 1: They got to add Georgia. Um, they got to add
- 49:27Speaker 1: South Carolina and that's still a, we going to see situation, right?
- 49:32Speaker 1: It's still, I don't care what the top, whatever they read,
- 49:34Speaker 1: it's still South Carolina. Um, They have Oklahoma, I mean, oh,
- 49:39Speaker 1: LSU at home, where LSU, we're going to learn a
- 49:43Speaker 1: lot about how they feel about Brian Kelly based on
- 49:46Speaker 1: what he does with this roster. That's three, and Tennessee,
- 49:50Speaker 1: South Carolina, LSU, all in a row with Oklahoma right
- 49:54Speaker 1: after that, right? This, I don't know what exactly the
- 49:59Speaker 1: expectations are. I just know losing four games two years
- 50:03Speaker 1: in a row is your seat will be ablaze for
- 50:07Speaker 1: year three. You'll get year three and you'll get a
- 50:10Speaker 1: brick thrown through your window.
- 50:12Speaker 2: It could be bad. I do like, I will say this,
- 50:15Speaker 2: like we, I want two things to stand here. One,
- 50:19Speaker 2: this could go bad in a hurry. It could go
- 50:21Speaker 2: bad real fast. And if it's not a fit and
- 50:24Speaker 2: they don't play like great football, not good. They have
- 50:28Speaker 2: to be great. That is the standard there. It could
- 50:30Speaker 2: go sideways super fast. Super fast. They will get you
- 50:33Speaker 2: out of there because, again, like Ryan Day, the factory's fine.
- 50:39Speaker 2: We can put a new name on the nameplate, but
- 50:42Speaker 2: everybody on the floor and the systems and how we
- 50:44Speaker 2: make things, the football factory's going to be there. You're
- 50:48Speaker 2: not that important as a head coach. You're not. You
- 50:51Speaker 2: might be once a generation, but ultimately, even Nick Saban,
- 50:54Speaker 2: over a long enough span of time, would have been
- 50:57Speaker 2: replaced because that's what happened to Bear Bryant. If Nick
- 51:01Speaker 2: Saban started to fall off, OK, not these sort of
- 51:05Speaker 2: like little indications that he was falling off that over
- 51:07Speaker 2: the last like two to three years in terms of
- 51:09Speaker 2: replacing coaching talent or recruiting. And it was never really recruiting.
- 51:13Speaker 2: It was talent development. No, we're talking about a big
- 51:16Speaker 2: fall off. They would have replaced him.
- 51:18Speaker 1: I just I'm interested.
- 51:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:21Speaker 1: The difference between Ohio State and Alabama is the floor.
- 51:25Speaker 1: The floor at Ohio State is much higher. much much
- 51:30Speaker 1: higher you don't have a whole lot of those disaster
- 51:32Speaker 1: piece theater seasons there is no uh 2000 2000 that's
- 51:37Speaker 1: the year i'm looking for the three and eight year
- 51:39Speaker 1: the mike devos yeah you don't have you don't have
- 51:41Speaker 1: those in the ohio state ledger i think.
- 51:44Speaker 2: They lose they lose to ucf at home.
- 51:46Speaker 1: Yeah yeah it doesn't go down louisiana monroe remember that
- 51:48Speaker 1: one yeah well yeah and that's that that is the
- 51:51Speaker 1: bottom right like that is the that is the bottom
- 51:54Speaker 1: the bottom could be five wins like when things fall
- 51:57Speaker 1: apart at Alabama.
- 51:57Speaker 2: You could have a four-win season if everything goes wrong.
- 52:01Speaker 2: I don't understand how you could do that with this
- 52:03Speaker 2: current roster, but if DeBoer's recruiting were to fall off
- 52:07Speaker 2: at any point, that's where you go, okay, you can't
- 52:10Speaker 2: fall off recruiting-wise at Alabama because look at everyone around you.
- 52:13Speaker 2: Look at everyone around you. They will eat straight off
- 52:15Speaker 2: your plate with no apologies. And on either side, on
- 52:20Speaker 2: every side, you'll have guys who do that. But I
- 52:23Speaker 2: like what they, like I will say this, that's all
- 52:24Speaker 2: very negative. I like This staff, I like the roster.
- 52:29Speaker 2: I like their approach. I think everything could work there
- 52:33Speaker 2: and work right now. They're not chasing a ghost of
- 52:36Speaker 2: a former glory by hiring someone who did something a
- 52:39Speaker 2: long time ago, which is what Auburn did. Auburn essentially
- 52:42Speaker 2: hired a guy because of what he did a decade ago.
- 52:46Speaker 1: Which was win two games against Alabama. 14-50.
- 52:48Speaker 2: That's it. You want to know why Hugh Freeze is
- 52:50Speaker 2: cashing checks? He's cashing checks in the larger sense because
- 52:54Speaker 2: in 2014 and 2015– They beat Ole Miss, beat Alabama
- 52:58Speaker 2: back to back, including once in Tuscaloosa off of one
- 53:01Speaker 2: of the wildest quarterback games ever played by Chad Kelly.
- 53:04Speaker 2: The other reason that he's currently employed is because is
- 53:08Speaker 2: because last year when they were down, they beat A & M.
- 53:11Speaker 2: That was it. Like they otherwise that was their only
- 53:13Speaker 2: win over a team with a winning record last year.
- 53:16Speaker 2: And they might have gotten him out had he not
- 53:18Speaker 2: won that game in particular.
- 53:21Speaker 1: I will say one last thing before we go, because
- 53:24Speaker 1: you mentioned earlier them games where the grease is hot,
- 53:26Speaker 1: the grease is popping. There is nothing quite like that
- 53:29Speaker 1: young quarterback out there in a grease popping game. And
- 53:33Speaker 1: if you've ever been to one in person, you never
- 53:35Speaker 1: forget it. So one I did not go to in person,
- 53:38Speaker 1: but we remember that year that Ohio State won the
- 53:40Speaker 1: national championship, the Cardale Jones season. They were they had
- 53:44Speaker 1: JT Barrett. Underrated, kind of all-time. He's like the original
- 53:49Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts. All-time great college football player who was often
- 53:52Speaker 1: a limiting factor on a team that he quarterbacked. But
- 53:55Speaker 1: his first start was a game against Navy. His second start,
- 53:58Speaker 1: he got introduced to a man named Bud Foster. Bud
- 54:01Speaker 1: Foster wore his ass out. And I knew that that
- 54:05Speaker 1: was going to happen because I had gone to a
- 54:07Speaker 1: game in 08. It was Carolina and Virginia Tech. And
- 54:10Speaker 1: Carolina had a really talented team that year. And they
- 54:13Speaker 1: had an NFL quarterback. They had three drafted receivers. Like,
- 54:18Speaker 1: Butch Davis had started to get the thing up and humming, right? Yeah.
- 54:22Speaker 2: T.J.
- 54:22Speaker 1: Yates gets hurt in the third quarter. They go to
- 54:25Speaker 1: a kid named Mike Paulus. His brother Greg played point
- 54:28Speaker 1: guard at Duke, but Mike Paulus was a high four-star recruit.
- 54:31Speaker 1: He was a quarterback of the future type. The first
- 54:34Speaker 1: play after Yates got hurt, they ran an off-tackle play
- 54:38Speaker 1: or something to Greg, a little score to touchdown. Fourth
- 54:40Speaker 1: quarter comes, and I had never done this kind of
- 54:44Speaker 1: game before. I was on the sidelines for the last drive,
- 54:48Speaker 1: and it was Mike Paulus on one side, and it
- 54:50Speaker 1: was Bud Foster's Virginia Tech defense. on the other side
- 54:54Speaker 1: and i watched a man's career in before it started
- 54:57Speaker 1: i ain't never seen nothing like that before in my
- 54:59Speaker 1: life i don't know how in the hell he i
- 55:00Speaker 1: think it really crystallized for me what the job is
- 55:02Speaker 1: that you're asking of a quarterback them boys was in
- 55:04Speaker 1: there fast fast and he had no idea what to do.
- 55:08Speaker 2: Yeah one thing you could do to break up a
- 55:10Speaker 2: spread offense that relies on you know qb reed relies
- 55:15Speaker 2: on you know i'm gonna look this way and see
- 55:17Speaker 2: if your ends crash and i'll come around There's a
- 55:19Speaker 2: great way to deal with that. Tackle everybody. That's it.
- 55:22Speaker 2: So Bud Foster ran the 4-6. The 4-6 has not
- 55:26Speaker 2: been a major force in football since the mid-80s. It
- 55:29Speaker 2: was the Jurassic Park situation where they go, hey, you
- 55:33Speaker 2: know what? I think a T-Rex would do really well
- 55:35Speaker 2: in this environment. Let's just let it loose. Let's see.
- 55:38Speaker 2: When the 4-6 comes out, I want you to know
- 55:40Speaker 2: what this means. Your center, who hikes the ball, has
- 55:43Speaker 2: a nose tackle. The biggest, fattest, meanest guy on the defense.
- 55:47Speaker 2: And he's lined up head on He's lined up head
- 55:50Speaker 2: on to the center. No gap control to worry about
- 55:52Speaker 2: for him. No, oh, I got to go ahead and control. No,
- 55:55Speaker 2: his annihilate. That's it. His whole job is to annihilate
- 55:59Speaker 2: the guy who only has one hand to block with
- 56:01Speaker 2: that snap. That's it. It is a beautiful, sometimes suicidal
- 56:07Speaker 2: approach to defense. Ohio State could not handle it. They
- 56:10Speaker 2: could not. It was just like watching somebody get hit
- 56:12Speaker 2: with a sledgehammer for four quarters.
- 56:14Speaker 1: Strategy of the 46 is very simple. We're going to
- 56:17Speaker 1: make it impossible for you to run. Therefore, you're going
- 56:19Speaker 1: to pass, except there'll be no time.
- 56:21Speaker 2: There will be no time because that six stands for?
- 56:25Speaker 2: Six linebackers. Six linebackers, okay? They're not there to do
- 56:30Speaker 2: pass coverage. They're not there to be doing anything smart.
- 56:34Speaker 2: They're there to play kill you. That's it. It's one
- 56:37Speaker 2: of my favorite defensive wrinkles of all time. By the way,
- 56:40Speaker 2: not a great Virginia Tech team. No, they just had
- 56:43Speaker 2: the answer that day. which was awesome to watch.
- 56:46Speaker 1: Great team that won a national championship against a quarterback
- 56:49Speaker 1: who I believe that year was a Heisman Trophy finalist.
- 56:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. A great team that just got a quiz
- 56:56Speaker 2: that it did not study for.
- 56:58Speaker 1: At all and failed it badly. A team so great
- 57:01Speaker 1: that it could win a national championship with its third-string
- 57:03Speaker 1: quarterback and its offensive coordinator being Tom Herman. Just throwing
- 57:09Speaker 1: that out there.
- 57:10Speaker 2: You said it.
- 57:12Speaker 1: Spencer Hall, check out the Shutdown Fullcast. Check out Channel 6.
