- 1:42Speaker 4: season coming up. On the show, we had to move
- 1:45Speaker 4: some things around a little bit of riscently. We had
- 1:46Speaker 4: the superintendent of schools in Knawk County schedule on the
- 1:48Speaker 4: show today, but she had a sudden meeting she had
- 1:51Speaker 4: to get to completely understandable. So I think she's going
- 1:53Speaker 4: to be on the show tomorrow. I say I think
- 1:55Speaker 4: because I'm not going to be here tomorrow. Deal Cooper
- 1:57Speaker 4: will be doing the show for me on Wednesday, Thursday
- 2:00Speaker 4: and Friday. So we had to move the superintendent to
- 2:04Speaker 4: one of those shows. I think she's going to try
- 2:05Speaker 4: to get her on the show tomorrow to talk about
- 2:09Speaker 4: not only the first day of school for students in
- 2:11Speaker 4: Kanawk County, which is coming up later this week, but
- 2:13Speaker 4: also the cell phone band which was passed by the
- 2:15Speaker 4: Kenaw County Board of Education and put into place last night.
- 2:19Speaker 4: Coop and Superintendent Potter will talk about that a little
- 2:22Speaker 4: bit later on in the week on this show. Though today,
- 2:25Speaker 4: as you've been hearing if you've been listening to the
- 2:27Speaker 4: Morning News, today is the fortieth anniversary West Virginia Metro News.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Jeff Jenkins is going to join us a little bit
- 2:33Speaker 4: later on to talk about that. We get special things
- 2:36Speaker 4: going on throughout the day. Chris Lawrence in our news
- 2:38Speaker 4: department just put together an absolutely stunning piece of audio
- 2:44Speaker 4: going back to the beginning days and throughout the years
- 2:46Speaker 4: of Metro News. So we're going to listen in on that.
- 2:49Speaker 4: On the talk line, those guys are going to talk
- 2:51Speaker 4: about a Dale Miller is going to be on with
- 2:55Speaker 4: them today and on midday we're also going to talk
- 2:57Speaker 4: about it with, among other folks, George Manahan, who was
- 3:00Speaker 4: the original Capital He was the original Brad mclhanney. He
- 3:03Speaker 4: was the Capitol correspondent for Metro News. He's going to
- 3:06Speaker 4: join us on midday and as well. So got plenty
- 3:08Speaker 4: to get to, but always time for your calls and text.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Big Ley Pigli Wiggly hotline three zero four three four
- 3:12Speaker 4: five fifty eight fifty eight. Tony of the Taylor Text
- 3:15Speaker 4: three zero four nine three five five zero zero. Let's
- 3:18Speaker 4: talk about something I love talking about, and that's food.
- 3:21Speaker 4: We're gonna talk about a little biscuits and gravy right now.
- 3:24Speaker 4: I know it's a long way off because the event
- 3:25Speaker 4: we're going to tell you that's not tool. We're all
- 3:28Speaker 4: bundled up and fall. But now's the time that the
- 3:30Speaker 4: planning is going into this big biscuits and gravy competition
- 3:33Speaker 4: over at Capitol markt. Joanna Romeo joins us. Joanna, Welcome
- 3:36Speaker 4: to the show. Hi, good morning, and the great PG.
- 3:40Speaker 4: Paul Crik goes with us as well. How you doing?
- 3:42Speaker 4: Are you just one of those people that everybody knows,
- 3:44Speaker 4: like by their first name or initials. You just say PG,
- 3:46Speaker 4: and everybody knows who you are pretty much.
- 3:48Speaker 6: It gets a little annoying too, because it's very hard
- 3:53Speaker 6: for me to remember everybody, but I hear I hear
- 3:56Speaker 6: PJPG constantly and it comes from like all directions.
- 4:01Speaker 4: Yeah, and you're the for those who may not know you,
- 4:04Speaker 4: For the five people out there who may not know
- 4:05Speaker 4: who you are, explain what restaurants you're affiliated with here in.
- 4:09Speaker 6: Charleston, Sam's Uptown Cafe, the Red Carpet Lounge, and Laporte Cafe.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Okay, and now how's Laporte going. That's that's a former
- 4:16Speaker 4: Tricky Fish location.
- 4:18Speaker 6: Yes, doing great?
- 4:18Speaker 4: Okay, Well, it was one of my favorite places before.
- 4:21Speaker 4: And of course all your places are great. I was
- 4:22Speaker 4: at the Red Carpet on Saturday for Kegs for k
- 4:25Speaker 4: Nines and it's and of course Sam's is killer as well.
- 4:30Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 4:30Speaker 6: Sam's is celebrating her thirty year anniversary next week.
- 4:33Speaker 4: I have been known to dine from time to time.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Of course, with the Metro News mid day show, I
- 4:38Speaker 4: don't get a whole lot of dining these days out
- 4:39Speaker 4: because I'm on the air from noon to three. But
- 4:42Speaker 4: I have been known to be in the company in
- 4:43Speaker 4: the presence of one Tony the Taylor there frequently, not
- 4:48Speaker 4: because I want to, but because he frequently buys but
- 4:51Speaker 4: as much money as I spend in his store than
- 4:53Speaker 4: he owes me. Right, absolutely, all right, let's talk his
- 4:56Speaker 4: biscuits and gravy. Let's talk about you had an event,
- 4:58Speaker 4: joy An. I'm gonna start with you, and we're gonna
- 5:00Speaker 4: give a little history about an event that started last year.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Tell us what we got going on.
- 5:04Speaker 8: Yeah, So our Biscuit and Gravy is scheduled at the
- 5:06Speaker 8: Capital Market this year for November eighth.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Last year is a great hit.
- 5:09Speaker 8: We had restaurants and individuals compete for it, and so
- 5:13Speaker 8: this year we're going to be doing experts versus wannabes
- 5:16Speaker 8: and then they can do biscuits and.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Gravy or we'll have the other category to be judging
- 5:20Speaker 3: too this.
- 5:20Speaker 4: Year, all right, And I like that experts and wannabes. Yes, Yeah,
- 5:24Speaker 4: it was a great event last year, and I was
- 5:26Speaker 4: happy that our station's got to take part in it.
- 5:28Speaker 4: I was over there. Rob Real from assister station ninety
- 5:31Speaker 4: six one KWS was there and as somebody who is
- 5:34Speaker 4: a food person, PG talk about your involvement in this
- 5:38Speaker 4: and why is it the biscuits and gravy or so popular.
- 5:42Speaker 6: Where I come from?
- 5:43Speaker 4: It's not now where are you from upstate New York, Okay?
- 5:47Speaker 6: And I was really surprised when I moved down here
- 5:49Speaker 6: and got into the food business down here. How popular
- 5:53Speaker 6: biscuits and gravy is down to the South.
- 5:57Speaker 4: It's an apple Achian slash Southern thing. I mean, it's
- 6:00Speaker 4: very very popular here. And I know it's Sam's that
- 6:03Speaker 4: you do some pretty good biscuits and gravy there for
- 6:06Speaker 4: your brunch, right.
- 6:07Speaker 6: We make biscuits and gravy a couple times a month
- 6:11Speaker 6: whenever we can. It is a very popular rite among
- 6:14Speaker 6: our brunch menu.
- 6:14Speaker 4: And again, this event's not until November, but we're telling
- 6:18Speaker 4: people now to put it on your calendar. And because
- 6:21Speaker 4: in order to pull this thing off, you need some
- 6:24Speaker 4: sponsors and things of that nature. Tell us who you're
- 6:27Speaker 4: raising money.
- 6:27Speaker 3: For, Joanna, Yes, so we're raising money for South Ridcht Church.
- 6:31Speaker 3: So we help out.
- 6:32Speaker 8: We want to be the community that the church or
- 6:34Speaker 8: the church that the community can't live without.
- 6:36Speaker 3: And we just do and give so much back.
- 6:38Speaker 8: So we like help the UC football team for all
- 6:40Speaker 8: their home games, like part of this money will help
- 6:42Speaker 8: contribute toward that. We feed the players and their families
- 6:46Speaker 8: for every home game and make treat bags for away games.
- 6:48Speaker 8: We help Knaw County kids and families around Christmas about
- 6:51Speaker 8: one hundred and twenty five families for the whole month,
- 6:54Speaker 8: providing food for them for the holiday.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Now and again it is sponsored by the South Ridge Church,
- 6:58Speaker 4: but we I mean, you guys do great work out there,
- 7:01Speaker 4: but this goes well beyond a church. This is not
- 7:03Speaker 4: just things going back into the church. This is things
- 7:05Speaker 4: that are going help out to help these people in
- 7:08Speaker 4: the community, whether they go to the church or not.
- 7:10Speaker 4: That's what we're talking about.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Yes, exactly.
- 7:12Speaker 8: So, so if you want to get involved as a sponsor,
- 7:14Speaker 8: we have like the Morning Month sponsor, Breakfast sponsor to
- 7:18Speaker 8: get involved in COVID insurance is already in, and tutors
- 7:21Speaker 8: and Geno's or help sponsoring our event already too.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Well, let's go back to last year. Was it as
- 7:27Speaker 4: a big a success last year as you thought it
- 7:29Speaker 4: would be, Because to me, when you and I first
- 7:31Speaker 4: talked about it and I had you on the show
- 7:33Speaker 4: and you reached out to me about it, I thought, well,
- 7:36Speaker 4: there's so many other things going on. Competitions, you know,
- 7:39Speaker 4: you've got to you know, there's chili competitions and wing
- 7:43Speaker 4: competitions and rib fests, and I thought, well, I don't
- 7:45Speaker 4: know how popular this is going to be. I was
- 7:47Speaker 4: sadly mistaken. It was very popular.
- 7:50Speaker 8: Yes, so well, everybody was excited because you can go
- 7:52Speaker 8: with family, friends, kids, all ages can come and just
- 7:54Speaker 8: have a great time, enjoy the community and see others
- 7:57Speaker 8: while you're there too.
- 7:58Speaker 4: And again it's a capital market, which is one of
- 8:00Speaker 4: the finer places to have it in Charleston. And the
- 8:03Speaker 4: turnout last year, Joanna was awesome and we had a
- 8:05Speaker 4: lot of people there.
- 8:06Speaker 8: Yeah, we had almost three hundred and Jim Strawn was
- 8:10Speaker 8: our MC and DJ EJ and he'll be back again
- 8:12Speaker 8: this year, both of those guys to help us to
- 8:14Speaker 8: make the event more fun.
- 8:15Speaker 4: Of course, our stations are going to be involved as well,
- 8:17Speaker 4: and we're looking forward to to checking it out. And
- 8:20Speaker 4: the thing about about biscuits and gravy is there are
- 8:24Speaker 4: I mean, seems so simple, but there are so many
- 8:27Speaker 4: different varieties and I had some big and I served
- 8:30Speaker 4: as a judge last year. I'm hoping I get a
- 8:32Speaker 4: call back this year. There are so many different ways
- 8:36Speaker 4: to make it and even the appearance of it doesn't
- 8:39Speaker 4: always look the same. I mean grandma's looked one way,
- 8:41Speaker 4: and then moms may look a little bit different. Restaurants
- 8:44Speaker 4: look a little bit. There's a lot of different ways
- 8:45Speaker 4: to make biscuits.
- 8:46Speaker 3: And gravy there is, and sausage is a way to go.
- 8:49Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly what about you? I mean you said pg up.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Being from upstate New York, this was not really your
- 8:54Speaker 4: thing until you got down here. What makes good biscuits
- 8:56Speaker 4: and gravy in your opinion?
- 8:59Speaker 6: Well, really good sausage for sure. I use a heavy cream,
- 9:04Speaker 6: a lot lot of pepper. Uh, you know it's it's
- 9:09Speaker 6: just kind of regional. I think you know mine is
- 9:13Speaker 6: very is not traditional. I don't think I wouldn't call
- 9:15Speaker 6: it traditional, but it definitely people that do like traditional
- 9:20Speaker 6: biscuits and gravy are very fond of it.
- 9:22Speaker 4: Now you say it's not traditional. What makes it non
- 9:25Speaker 4: not traditional?
- 9:26Speaker 6: It's very heavily seasoned with.
- 9:31Speaker 4: Stuff stuff that I don't want to say, No, I
- 9:34Speaker 4: get it, but but that's what that's what makes it
- 9:36Speaker 4: is the is the secret saucer to speak absolutely this
- 9:39Speaker 4: you go in now, I like it. I like it
- 9:41Speaker 4: very very spicy. And I get to give a good
- 9:44Speaker 4: shout out to one of my good friends. Everybody knows her,
- 9:46Speaker 4: and everybody knows her gravy Patro patriv sale here and
- 9:49Speaker 4: Charleston who who does some of the best Hungarian gravy
- 9:52Speaker 4: and it will it's not for the faint of heart,
- 9:55Speaker 4: but it's but it's very good. And I saw and
- 9:57Speaker 4: I and I sampled some gravyes last year doing event
- 10:00Speaker 4: that were like that, but then also sampled some that
- 10:02Speaker 4: were just as mild as they can be. They don't
- 10:03Speaker 4: necessarily have to be spicy in my opinions, like chili
- 10:07Speaker 4: pg good chili does not have to be spicy. I
- 10:11Speaker 4: prefer it spicy, but good chili does not have to
- 10:13Speaker 4: be spicy. I make all my stuff spicy. Well that's
- 10:16Speaker 4: the way I like it. I mean, I always jokeing
- 10:18Speaker 4: in my house if you don't like spice, do you
- 10:20Speaker 4: won't like eating at mine? In my wife's house, because
- 10:23Speaker 4: everything we cook is spicy.
- 10:25Speaker 6: Our our gravy recipe actually is kind of an offshoot
- 10:28Speaker 6: of Patriots because she used to make it for us
- 10:31Speaker 6: for brunch way back in the day.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Tex said, I had no clue that Sam's had biscuits
- 10:37Speaker 4: and gravy. Uh, I think they're getting Sam's uptown Cafe
- 10:42Speaker 4: mixed up with Sam's Club because that but do you
- 10:46Speaker 4: sell memberships in Sam's Uptown Cafe.
- 10:48Speaker 6: I'll sell anything.
- 10:50Speaker 4: We'll sell Joanna if we think they get something for
- 10:52Speaker 4: But no, this is not This is Sam's Uptown Cafe
- 10:56Speaker 4: that we're talking about, not Sam's Club, which is one
- 10:58Speaker 4: of the Sam's Uptown Cafe is one of the premiere
- 11:01Speaker 4: eating establishments here in Charleston. So again, the event will
- 11:05Speaker 4: be November the eighth. November the eighth, and where can
- 11:08Speaker 4: people learn more about it?
- 11:10Speaker 8: So they can either reach out to me through my
- 11:14Speaker 8: phone number six O six four six five ten eighty eight,
- 11:17Speaker 8: or we're getting our Facebook updated, so our website, it's
- 11:22Speaker 8: going to be at https at src dot church center
- 11:27Speaker 8: dot com. Hashtags registrations slash event, slash three zero five
- 11:32Speaker 8: three four eight three.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Okay, that's a lot of stuff, So I'll tell you
- 11:35Speaker 4: what we'll do. We'll we'll get it out there when
- 11:37Speaker 4: we get a little bit closer. The reason I wanted
- 11:39Speaker 4: to have you guys on here today was to talk
- 11:41Speaker 4: about the event.
- 11:41Speaker 7: Again.
- 11:41Speaker 4: It's not till November, and it's been one hundred and
- 11:44Speaker 4: eighty eight degrees in Charleston every day this summer, but
- 11:47Speaker 4: by the time this event rolls around will be well
- 11:49Speaker 4: past Halloween looking toward the holidays, will probably be bundled up.
- 11:53Speaker 4: We want to have some coffee to go along with
- 11:55Speaker 4: it as well. We'll be in the cool weather months
- 11:56Speaker 4: by that point and there's nothing that nothing will warm
- 11:59Speaker 4: you up quietly, little biscuits and gravy.
- 12:01Speaker 8: Yeah, and the Capitol Market and our church. We're getting
- 12:03Speaker 8: our Facebook event ready to blast off this month too,
- 12:06Speaker 8: so it'll be on the Facebook.
- 12:08Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 12:08Speaker 4: As we get closer and you're looking for entries, you're
- 12:10Speaker 4: looking to is there a cutoff as far as like
- 12:12Speaker 4: the date goes when you have to let people know
- 12:15Speaker 4: that you're can And we'll have you on plenty of
- 12:16Speaker 4: times between now and now, but.
- 12:17Speaker 8: You have a cut off date yet, I mean preferly
- 12:20Speaker 8: just to make sure we can do the logistics and day.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Of event lay out to go smooth. I mean by
- 12:23Speaker 3: the end of like September, mid October would.
- 12:25Speaker 4: Be great, okay, all right, and we'll get we'll have
- 12:27Speaker 4: you on then, you know, before then to talk about it.
- 12:29Speaker 4: And again we do want to remind you what's the entry.
- 12:32Speaker 10: Fee to you?
- 12:33Speaker 3: It's free, so we cover the cost.
- 12:35Speaker 4: Okay, ye, all right, so keep it? And and how
- 12:37Speaker 4: how do people if they just want to come out
- 12:38Speaker 4: and samples some biscuits and gravy, how does the ticketing
- 12:41Speaker 4: work for that? How does the price gime?
- 12:42Speaker 8: Yeah, we'll have wristbans again, so presell if you get
- 12:45Speaker 8: them early. It'll be fifteen for adult, five for children,
- 12:47Speaker 8: and then day of event it'll be twenty dollars adult
- 12:49Speaker 8: and ten for a child.
- 12:50Speaker 4: And so are you just able to sample pretty much
- 12:52Speaker 4: all that you want to there? Or how does that work?
- 12:54Speaker 11: You get?
- 12:54Speaker 8: Yeah, so you'll have one to two out serving samplings
- 12:57Speaker 8: and so they'll get to visit each contender and if
- 13:00Speaker 8: they're not full, they can go back and do round
- 13:02Speaker 8: twos if they want. But it's gonna be a lot
- 13:03Speaker 8: of food this year. All right, date again November A
- 13:07Speaker 8: on Saturday, second Saturday.
- 13:08Speaker 4: All right, second Saturday of the month. And this is
- 13:10Speaker 4: going to be an annual event here in Charleston. This
- 13:12Speaker 4: is the second one that we've done. It's over at
- 13:14Speaker 4: Capital Market and again we'll have you on plenty of time.
- 13:16Speaker 4: What we wanted to push today was sponsorship. So if
- 13:19Speaker 4: there's a company out there auto dealership, you know, anybody
- 13:23Speaker 4: that's law firm that wants to sponsor this thing because
- 13:25Speaker 4: it does go for a great cause. It is sponsored
- 13:27Speaker 4: by South Ridge Church. But again, we don't want people
- 13:31Speaker 4: to think that. I mean, there's nothing wrong with with
- 13:33Speaker 4: the work that churches do, but this is about more
- 13:35Speaker 4: than just church work, because this is the thing that
- 13:36Speaker 4: you do out in the community as well. And again,
- 13:40Speaker 4: final time, where can people reach out to you if
- 13:42Speaker 4: they're interested in being a sponsor?
- 13:43Speaker 8: Yeah, so just they can call me at six oh
- 13:45Speaker 8: six four six five eighty eight or email me at
- 13:48Speaker 8: Jay Underscore mcnerlin at hotmail dot com.
- 13:51Speaker 4: All right, we'll have you on between now and the PG.
- 13:52Speaker 4: It's always a pleasure to have you on the show.
- 13:54Speaker 4: It's good to see you. All right, we'll take a break.
- 13:56Speaker 4: It's nine twenty one. You guys are here on a
- 13:58Speaker 4: special day because we're celebrating Metro. This is fortieth anniversary today.
- 14:01Speaker 4: Forty years ago today, this thing launched and we're spending
- 14:04Speaker 4: a lot of time talking about it. You probably don't
- 14:07Speaker 4: remember forty years ago, PG, And I remember forty years ago,
- 14:10Speaker 4: although I was getting ready to go into the tenth
- 14:13Speaker 4: grade at that time, but I certainly remember know what
- 14:16Speaker 4: a big part Metro News was, so you know, you
- 14:18Speaker 4: maybe could have brought us some biscuits and gravy to celebrate,
- 14:20Speaker 4: just saying next time, next time. All right, we can
- 14:23Speaker 4: hold you to that. All right. I appreciate you guys
- 14:25Speaker 4: being here hanging out with me. Just one second of
- 14:27Speaker 4: a day violand show on five any I brought to
- 14:28Speaker 4: you part by Live Healthy West Virginia presented by WVU Medison.

- 17:46Speaker 4: for Metro News.
- 17:47Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 17:47Speaker 4: Yeah, this is a pretty big deal, pretty and we're
- 17:50Speaker 4: gonna get We're be talking about this throughout the day.
- 17:53Speaker 15: Uh.
- 17:54Speaker 4: I was talking to Dave Wilson in the break there. Uh,
- 17:57Speaker 4: a co host of a talk line. They're gonna bring
- 17:59Speaker 4: back Kay Murray on the show today. K Kris the
- 18:01Speaker 4: original the original talk line and I remember this well
- 18:05Speaker 4: was only on Wednesdays and it was hosted by Hobby
- 18:08Speaker 4: Kirchill and k Murray. Kay Murray is going to join
- 18:10Speaker 4: Wilson Meadows on on talkline. I think Dale Miller is
- 18:14Speaker 4: going to be on the show next hour and we're
- 18:17Speaker 4: going to have on Metro News Midday George Manahan, who was,
- 18:19Speaker 4: as I called him, the original Brad. He was the
- 18:21Speaker 4: original Capital Course, Capital Course, so he's going to join
- 18:25Speaker 4: us as well. Let's go back to the beginning of
- 18:27Speaker 4: Metro News. Where were you forty years ago?
- 18:29Speaker 14: I was actually just about when Metro News went on
- 18:33Speaker 14: the air forty years ago today. It was just a
- 18:35Speaker 14: couple of months before I started an internship there. So
- 18:40Speaker 14: I was in the WU School of Journalism and was
- 18:45Speaker 14: working with the football team as a student equipment manager.
- 18:50Speaker 14: And that's where I met Tony and Hoppey and Uh.
- 18:54Speaker 14: So I when my first when I first came to
- 18:57Speaker 14: the station, I remember that Metro News had in on
- 19:00Speaker 14: the air for just a couple of months, so it's
- 19:03Speaker 14: very much in its infancy. Uh but yeah, so it's
- 19:07Speaker 14: uh it was. What was so new about it was
- 19:11Speaker 14: it was satellite distributed and Dell Miller and John Racy,
- 19:18Speaker 14: the owner of the company, uh discussed this idea with
- 19:22Speaker 14: Hoppy too, right, and they came up with a proposal
- 19:27Speaker 14: to offer this to affiliates other stations across the state.
- 19:32Speaker 14: At that time, we only owned two stations, the station,
- 19:37Speaker 14: the two stations in Morgantown, w A j R.
- 19:39Speaker 4: And w v A Q UH and UH.
- 19:42Speaker 14: And so they offered Metro News would be operated out
- 19:45Speaker 14: of there, and they they would offer it to certain,
- 19:47Speaker 14: you know, certain stations across the state. And the deal
- 19:49Speaker 14: would be is that we would put a satellite dish
- 19:53Speaker 14: UH so you could receive the signal. We would put
- 19:57Speaker 14: the bill for that and put the satellite dish at
- 19:58Speaker 14: your station. And so that's what we did for I
- 20:00Speaker 14: think it was thirty nine affiliates. Originally thirty nine stations
- 20:04Speaker 14: were the original affiliates.
- 20:05Speaker 4: And to me, let me just jump in here. And
- 20:07Speaker 4: of course, you know, the company and out of Morgantown
- 20:11Speaker 4: was very well respected, but just right out of the
- 20:14Speaker 4: gate to be able to have thirty nine affiliates to
- 20:17Speaker 4: go with them with this idea that we want to
- 20:19Speaker 4: do a statewide radio network. Was the fact that you
- 20:24Speaker 4: were able to be able to get thirty nine radio
- 20:27Speaker 4: stations from day one to say yeah, we want to
- 20:29Speaker 4: be a part of this. I think that's pretty special
- 20:31Speaker 4: in and of itself. Yeah, it really was.
- 20:32Speaker 14: And it speaks to Dale and John and Hoppy and
- 20:39Speaker 14: the product you know that was coming out of there
- 20:42Speaker 14: and Tony was also part of the original He was
- 20:44Speaker 14: there when it started, Tony Creedy, and you know, there's
- 20:48Speaker 14: there's a lot that's still the same day. You know,
- 20:51Speaker 14: there's still newscasts seven days a week like there were
- 20:53Speaker 14: forty years ago, and they start on the weekdays. They
- 20:58Speaker 14: started five fifty five am, and they play three times
- 21:02Speaker 14: an hour for the affiliates to play them when you know,
- 21:05Speaker 14: when it's most convenient for them. They go from six
- 21:08Speaker 14: basically it's at five fifty five am to six thirty pm.
- 21:11Speaker 14: That's that's the run of them.
- 21:13Speaker 4: So it's every day with the exception.
- 21:17Speaker 14: The only day we don't have news is Christmas Day,
- 21:20Speaker 14: and every other day we have news and we do newscasts,
- 21:23Speaker 14: and we've had a lot over the years. You mentioned
- 21:25Speaker 14: talk Line, obviously, sports Line and the morning news has
- 21:28Speaker 14: been around for more than twenty years, and in the
- 21:32Speaker 14: other special program Game Night and just the other special
- 21:35Speaker 14: programs that we have. But it's West Virginia is a
- 21:38Speaker 14: great state to be able to do this in. I
- 21:39Speaker 14: think Hoppy says that in the piece that's going to
- 21:42Speaker 14: play here is that just because you know it wasn't
- 21:46Speaker 14: it's interesting to hear him talk about it because it
- 21:48Speaker 14: really wasn't as easy you talk about the thirty nine afilies.
- 21:51Speaker 14: But they had to sell it to them. I mean,
- 21:52Speaker 14: they had to say, hey, listen, we think this would
- 21:54Speaker 14: be good because you know, back then in the mid eighties,
- 21:58Speaker 14: radio was just kind of starting to change a little
- 22:00Speaker 14: bit because all these local stations had their own news people, right,
- 22:04Speaker 14: but they were starting they were starting to you know,
- 22:07Speaker 14: that was being that was starting to be a big
- 22:09Speaker 14: commitment for station to be able to keep the local newspeaple.
- 22:11Speaker 4: Right, and even the smaller communities like you know, I was.
- 22:15Speaker 4: I was about to go into tenth grade when Metro
- 22:17Speaker 4: News launched. But in Logan, we had two radio stations
- 22:20Speaker 4: at the time, WVW and WLOG. I worked at both
- 22:23Speaker 4: of them. I started WLG, went away to college and
- 22:26Speaker 4: came back and worked a WVW, but both I mean,
- 22:29Speaker 4: and even a town of small as Logan, there were
- 22:31Speaker 4: two full time radio stations, two sports teams that covered
- 22:36Speaker 4: the Logan basketball team, two news departments, and for younger
- 22:40Speaker 4: people that maybe and their stories like that all over
- 22:42Speaker 4: the state. That wasn't exclusive of the Logan So as
- 22:45Speaker 4: you said to go to them and say, well, why
- 22:48Speaker 4: should you know I'm a radio station in Mercer County.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Why should I care what's going on in Wetzel County.
- 22:52Speaker 14: Right, you got to try to sell that, right, Yeah,
- 22:54Speaker 14: And they were able to do so, and and and
- 22:58Speaker 14: I think over the years, what's happened. I think it's
- 22:59Speaker 14: been the benefit to West Virginia because you know, what's
- 23:04Speaker 14: happened in our state, I mean, and what evens what's
- 23:07Speaker 14: happened in the industry. Radio companies were not able to
- 23:10Speaker 14: continue to staff their stations like they did in the past,
- 23:14Speaker 14: and so Metro News has actually provided a really good
- 23:17Speaker 14: service of daily news covering the state of West Virginia.
- 23:20Speaker 14: Of course, we added a website probably twenty years ago,
- 23:23Speaker 14: maybe I forget. I don't know our exact launch day
- 23:25Speaker 14: at wv metronews dot com, but you know, everything's on
- 23:28Speaker 14: the web now. All of our stories are there and
- 23:32Speaker 14: posting there seven days a week in different things. But
- 23:34Speaker 14: it's when you talk about I mean, there are radio
- 23:37Speaker 14: stations in this state have been around a lot longer
- 23:39Speaker 14: than forty years. Individual stations, as we know that, but
- 23:42Speaker 14: to have a network that's that's still being able to
- 23:45Speaker 14: be around forty years and it's a lot of people
- 23:47Speaker 14: it's not just the people you here on the air,
- 23:49Speaker 14: it's our folks. Larry Post is leading that effort right now,
- 23:53Speaker 14: and our sales folks upstairs that sell Metro News and
- 23:56Speaker 14: just do a great job and selling our product. And
- 23:59Speaker 14: so we're very thankful to.
- 24:00Speaker 4: Folks set on the other side of the glass, you know,
- 24:03Speaker 4: uh and Anthony Harmon, Ryan Nicholson who you hear from
- 24:06Speaker 4: time to time on the air. And you know that
- 24:08Speaker 4: those those folks, Matt Murphy uh are are a big,
- 24:12Speaker 4: big buz. Without those guys, none of it happens when
- 24:15Speaker 4: it went out the engineering team, none of it happened.
- 24:17Speaker 14: Right right and just and just the talent, you know
- 24:19Speaker 14: when you think of Chris Lawrence and Fred Pursinger and
- 24:22Speaker 14: obviously Tony and Hoppy all those years and uh and
- 24:26Speaker 14: and now we're into new programming, which is exciting, you
- 24:30Speaker 14: know that that you're part of. And so it's been
- 24:33Speaker 14: it's really has been great. And you know, we we're
- 24:37Speaker 14: a member of an organization of state networks, you know,
- 24:40Speaker 14: and uh and to be able to to uh, we
- 24:44Speaker 14: we've we've been able to do some things that other
- 24:46Speaker 14: states have had difficulty doing, just other network other statewide
- 24:49Speaker 14: networks have had difficulty of doing but we've been able
- 24:51Speaker 14: to do it, and so just very thankful for that.
- 24:53Speaker 14: And yeah, forty years passed pretty quickly.
- 24:57Speaker 4: And it's changed. I mean, as you said, that's the
- 24:59Speaker 4: end of saved to the year to talk about how
- 25:01Speaker 4: it's it's changed so much because you had to you know,
- 25:04Speaker 4: you had to provide the stations with the satellite programming
- 25:07Speaker 4: and now everything I've you know, we got computers and
- 25:09Speaker 4: people are just down. And in this the phone I
- 25:12Speaker 4: was about I thought I was on Metro News TV.
- 25:13Speaker 4: I was going to hold up my phone, right, people,
- 25:15Speaker 4: this is a great number of people, not the majority
- 25:18Speaker 4: of people. This is where they listen to it. Sure,
- 25:19Speaker 4: you know it's not necessarily in the cart home radio.
- 25:22Speaker 14: So you know at the beginning it would feed, you know,
- 25:25Speaker 14: three times an hour on the satellite, and so a
- 25:27Speaker 14: station would either take it live when it fed the
- 25:30Speaker 14: individual newscast once an hour, or you would record it
- 25:33Speaker 14: and play it back. You can do that, but now
- 25:36Speaker 14: you don't get so much inside baseball here. But now
- 25:39Speaker 14: it still feeds like it always has. But there are
- 25:42Speaker 14: other ways that you can we posted in other ways.
- 25:45Speaker 14: You have a or affiliates have a have a if
- 25:49Speaker 14: I can describe it correctly, they have capabilities of grabbing it,
- 25:54Speaker 14: you know what they want. Yeah, they don't have to
- 25:56Speaker 14: sit there and wait for it. I mean they can
- 25:58Speaker 14: you know, once it's up, they can go grab And
- 25:59Speaker 14: that's a lot with a lot of our program they
- 26:02Speaker 14: can program it. You know, Ashley Upstairs does a great
- 26:06Speaker 14: job with you know, with kind of you know, doing
- 26:09Speaker 14: the programming and the continuity and those type of things.
- 26:12Speaker 14: So you know there's a lot behind it. But you know,
- 26:16Speaker 14: we had the news operation was in Morgantown for the
- 26:18Speaker 14: first fifteen years, and then we moved the news operation
- 26:22Speaker 14: here in two thousand into Charleston, and so we've been
- 26:25Speaker 14: the news operation has been based in Charleston for twenty
- 26:28Speaker 14: five years.
- 26:29Speaker 16: This month.
- 26:30Speaker 14: We came in August of two thousand. I knew George
- 26:34Speaker 14: Manahan's going to be on later today. And George was
- 26:37Speaker 14: our first Capital correspondent, and we had a lot of
- 26:40Speaker 14: people because we were based in Morgantown and so we
- 26:43Speaker 14: had someone in this before we owned any stations in Charleston.
- 26:46Speaker 14: But he was actually literally at the Capitol reporting and
- 26:50Speaker 14: other guys. There's a guy named John Thompson, who did
- 26:51Speaker 14: a great job, who was a reporter from the Capitol,
- 26:53Speaker 14: did a great job covering stuff, and several other reporters,
- 26:57Speaker 14: lots of reporters over the years that we've had talk
- 27:00Speaker 14: about some of.
- 27:01Speaker 4: Those names that have gone on between the sports team
- 27:05Speaker 4: and the news team that have gone the bigger things.
- 27:07Speaker 4: I mean, I have one name that sticks out to
- 27:09Speaker 4: me because it's an interesting name is Sager mcgoani. Ya
- 27:12Speaker 4: mcganni was part of Metro News. And if you're up
- 27:14Speaker 4: early like I am, and you listen to American in
- 27:17Speaker 4: the Morning that airs prior to the Morning News, you'll
- 27:19Speaker 4: hear a report from Sacer mcgoanni every morning on the
- 27:22Speaker 4: morning News.
- 27:23Speaker 14: Yes, Sager started with us in Morgantown sometime in the nineties,
- 27:26Speaker 14: and yeah, he's had a great He works for AP
- 27:29Speaker 14: Radio in Washington, d C. Covers the State Department and
- 27:33Speaker 14: a lot of times you'll he'll be covering the President.
- 27:35Speaker 14: And he was just actually just named to the new
- 27:39Speaker 14: House Hall of Fame at the University of Syracuse. Yeah,
- 27:42Speaker 14: Broadcasting Hall of Fame at the new House School, which
- 27:44Speaker 14: is you know Tony. Tony was named that a couple
- 27:47Speaker 14: of years ago and now Sager is going in.
- 27:48Speaker 4: So it's one of the I mean that for those
- 27:50Speaker 4: who don't know, that's one of the two or three
- 27:53Speaker 4: probably premier broadcasting universities in the CATEA Western. It really
- 27:57Speaker 4: is early is so.
- 27:58Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 27:59Speaker 14: The original crew was Hoppy, a guy named Brian Dick,
- 28:04Speaker 14: and a guy named Jim Cress. Those were the three anchors,
- 28:08Speaker 14: and the capital correspondent was was George Manahan uh and
- 28:14Speaker 14: Tony did sports. Also a guy named George von Binko
- 28:18Speaker 14: he may remember. Some may remember that name. George did
- 28:20Speaker 14: sports too, and that was kind of the original. That
- 28:23Speaker 14: was kind of the original crew. But there have been
- 28:26Speaker 14: a lot of people over the years. Dave another one,
- 28:28Speaker 14: Dave Pass who does Who's Who does baseball for the
- 28:33Speaker 14: Nationals and has for years. He he he started with us.
- 28:37Speaker 14: Uh what no, I'm talking that's Dave Jaigler. Dave Jaigler
- 28:41Speaker 14: does the national does the Arizona Cardinals, he does NBA.
- 28:47Speaker 14: So he yeah, he started with us.
- 28:49Speaker 9: Uh.
- 28:49Speaker 14: Of course, I can't forget Kyle Wiggs, who's been on
- 28:52Speaker 14: almost almost from the beginning. I mean he came about
- 28:54Speaker 14: the same time.
- 28:56Speaker 4: The second generation of Wigs.
- 28:57Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 28:58Speaker 14: Now, yeah, yeah, so we had We had a lot
- 28:59Speaker 14: of day's guy named Dave Ryan. It's always been a
- 29:02Speaker 14: thing with this, but we had a guy named Dave Ryan,
- 29:04Speaker 14: and Dave has done a lot over the years in
- 29:07Speaker 14: sports on UH. He was on he was on like
- 29:10Speaker 14: the CBS network for a long time. We had a
- 29:13Speaker 14: guy named Charlie Palillo who was that name who left
- 29:17Speaker 14: us and went and UH and and went to Houston
- 29:22Speaker 14: UH and was on the in on the radio in
- 29:24Speaker 14: Houston for years. Charlie was UH more more UH made familiar.
- 29:30Speaker 14: And Bill Nevin and Bill is the is the voice
- 29:33Speaker 14: of of the stadium and of the coliseum for Mountaineers,
- 29:37Speaker 14: and Bills does great work for the w W Foundation.
- 29:40Speaker 14: We did news for us for a long time. To
- 29:43Speaker 14: Dave Jacklin who's on with Fred on Friday nights, uh
- 29:47Speaker 14: is you know, still does the still does football Corse,
- 29:50Speaker 14: Travis Jones who's still with us, and so yeah, just
- 29:53Speaker 14: a lot of names over that. Jackie Bashera, who's who
- 29:56Speaker 14: is a Charleston native who worked for US for a
- 29:58Speaker 14: while and also worked for AP Radio. There was a
- 30:02Speaker 14: Capital or one of our Capital correspondents named Melissa Rocker
- 30:06Speaker 14: who was based here in Charleston. She she did a
- 30:09Speaker 14: good job. Tom Gavin kind of another guy.
- 30:12Speaker 4: These names because you know, I worked for so long
- 30:15Speaker 4: at their station in Logan and our first news every
- 30:18Speaker 4: morning was Chris Lawrence usually at five fifty five. I
- 30:21Speaker 4: would go on at five thirty and we you know
- 30:23Speaker 4: what we call back time into Chris Lawrence five fifty five.
- 30:25Speaker 4: And these names. A lot of these people I never met,
- 30:28Speaker 4: but hearing these names brings back a lot of memories
- 30:31Speaker 4: for me.
- 30:31Speaker 14: And then the morning news anchors have been like Jennifer Smith,
- 30:34Speaker 14: she was the first morning news anchor with Chris when
- 30:36Speaker 14: the morning news started. Then Shanna Johnson, and then Carrie
- 30:39Speaker 14: Hoodisak and so and there's just been a lot of
- 30:44Speaker 14: you know, just a lot of great people who have
- 30:46Speaker 14: worked here, and a lot have gotten their start here
- 30:49Speaker 14: and have gone on, you know, to to stay in
- 30:52Speaker 14: the business or do other things to kind of related
- 30:55Speaker 14: to to journalism or in communication. So we've had a
- 31:00Speaker 14: lot of good employees, a ton of good employees.
- 31:02Speaker 4: We're going to continue this conversation. I know Jeff that
- 31:05Speaker 4: in the midst of all the celebrating that you had

- 31:10Speaker 14: So I appreciate that.

- 34:43Speaker 4: some time talking about the fortieth anniversary of Metro News,
- 34:45Speaker 4: which is today. Set back and give this a listen.
- 34:50Speaker 4: The Metro News radio network was the evolution of an idea,
- 34:54Speaker 4: a new concept in nineteen eighty five which could adapt
- 34:57Speaker 4: to new technology to radio across the Mountain State. The architect,
- 35:01Speaker 4: now retired President and General manager Dale Miller. After pitching
- 35:05Speaker 4: the idea owner John Racy about the new possibilities of
- 35:08Speaker 4: satellite uplinks, they visited Clyde lear in Missouri, the father
- 35:12Speaker 4: of satellite radio delivery and the creator of Learfield Communication,
- 35:16Speaker 4: and soon afterwards the concept of Metro News was born.
- 35:19Speaker 12: We put a satellite edition in every one of thirty
- 35:23Speaker 12: seven original affiliates, and that was half off at Chris
- 35:28Speaker 12: because you know, a lot of these guys didn't have
- 35:30Speaker 12: much property, or we're on top of a roof for
- 35:32Speaker 12: trying to go on a telephone pool. But basically we
- 35:36Speaker 12: got the infrastructure done and then pull the trigger on
- 35:40Speaker 12: the network.
- 35:41Speaker 22: On August twelfth, August twelfth, nineteen eighty five, day number one,
- 35:45Speaker 22: newscast number one the Metro News Radio network. At the
- 35:49Speaker 22: Metro News anchored ass that morning, Hoppy Kurgiable.
- 35:51Speaker 16: It was an anxious day and anxious morning. Engineers were
- 35:57Speaker 16: still working to ensure or that this satellite delivered network
- 36:02Speaker 16: could be on the air. At five thirty in the
- 36:05Speaker 16: morning when we sent out the first news call of
- 36:08Speaker 16: newscuts and then five point fifty five the first newscast.
- 36:12Speaker 16: So I had written and cut the first newscast but
- 36:15Speaker 16: an engineer, Chuck Natalie was literally doing the technical technical
- 36:22Speaker 16: punch block we call it, to ensure that we could
- 36:25Speaker 16: be on the air, you know, the first morning. Obviously,
- 36:28Speaker 16: I just wanted it to work right, you know, and
- 36:31Speaker 16: make sure all the affiliates were right. So yeah, you
- 36:35Speaker 16: know it was it was a little bit of Harry,
- 36:37Speaker 16: but you know, it was well worth it.
- 36:39Speaker 22: It was a stressful day, so stressful that nobody thought
- 36:43Speaker 22: to record that first newscast for posterity. But over time,
- 36:47Speaker 22: Metro News began to grow in stature.
- 36:50Speaker 16: This once Virginia Metro News sign Jim Krass, Ohio Gounty
- 36:55Speaker 16: Surga Judge Greg Bronwater listened to arguments today for the
- 36:58Speaker 16: rights of more than sixty men.
- 37:00Speaker 22: The concept of a state news network was relatively new
- 37:03Speaker 22: and may not have fit everywhere, but Kerchibal said they
- 37:06Speaker 22: were able to help radio affiliate stations at the time
- 37:10Speaker 22: understand what they were building.
- 37:12Speaker 16: They had to be convinced, and I'd say one of
- 37:15Speaker 16: the biggest obstacles was you'd go to a local radio
- 37:18Speaker 16: station and we'd say we want to do a statewide network,
- 37:21Speaker 16: and response was, well, I'm in this town, what do
- 37:24Speaker 16: I care about? What's happening in another part of the state,
- 37:28Speaker 16: and we had to overcome that by making the argument
- 37:30Speaker 16: that even though this state is very very different sections,
- 37:35Speaker 16: that there still was a commonality. We're all West Virginians.
- 37:38Speaker 16: Many times, often what happens in this state news was
- 37:42Speaker 16: affects everybody. So there was some convincing to do with
- 37:45Speaker 16: these local radio stations.
- 37:47Speaker 12: One of the biggest selling points for Metro News is
- 37:49Speaker 12: that I gave all of the radio stations a fax
- 37:52Speaker 12: machine so we can send a Matha Davids let up.
- 37:56Speaker 12: But to that point, a lot of the little stations
- 37:58Speaker 12: didn't have that. Not only did we give every one
- 38:00Speaker 12: of these radio stations satellite digits, but I cut a
- 38:03Speaker 12: deal with ABC and was able to also give them
- 38:07Speaker 12: top of the hour network news, which a lot of
- 38:10Speaker 12: them didn't have at the time.
- 38:12Speaker 22: Miller admitted the infrastructure was one thing, Programming was another,
- 38:16Speaker 22: But then there was the talent.
- 38:17Speaker 12: Had a young, very young sports guy who had only
- 38:20Speaker 12: been with me a year, Tony Kreedy.
- 38:22Speaker 23: All set to go here with the Jerry West Lounge
- 38:24Speaker 23: as Major Harris, wearing a rather dapper suit, is joined
- 38:28Speaker 23: by head coach Don Neel and they're coming down from
- 38:30Speaker 23: the staircase and joining the basketball players lounge as the
- 38:34Speaker 23: media begins to turn on their cameras and all the
- 38:37Speaker 23: whites are focused on West Virginia's Major Harris and obviously Hoppy.
- 38:42Speaker 12: And you know when Hoppy's show first started, it was
- 38:45Speaker 12: only on Wednesday morning, and then I came to him
- 38:47Speaker 12: one day and said, we need to take this thing
- 38:49Speaker 12: every day. You need to beat here. At first, I
- 38:51Speaker 12: doing crazy about that because he was still doing news
- 38:55Speaker 12: and he was still doing all of the other things
- 38:57Speaker 12: that he had to do as news director.
- 38:59Speaker 16: It was Dale Miller's vision, and I didn't want to
- 39:01Speaker 16: do it. I was thought I was a news director
- 39:05Speaker 16: of local news at waj R at the time, and
- 39:07Speaker 16: all I could think of was this is going to
- 39:09Speaker 16: be a lot of work. And I initially I didn't
- 39:13Speaker 16: want to do it, but but I came around, and
- 39:16Speaker 16: obviously I'm glad I did.
- 39:18Speaker 20: This is talk Line on Metro News. To be on
- 39:20Speaker 20: the show this morning, call one eight hundred seven sixty
- 39:22Speaker 20: five talk Or in Morgantown two nine six zero zero
- 39:26Speaker 20: four one.
- 39:27Speaker 4: Your hosts are Kay Murray and Hoppy Kerchieval.
- 39:29Speaker 24: Nine thirteen on a Wednesday morning, I'm Hoppy Kerchival with
- 39:32Speaker 24: ke Good morning, came.
- 39:33Speaker 4: Ray Good Morning, and we've had a problem here getting
- 39:35Speaker 4: Lisa on the show.
- 39:36Speaker 1: But finally the time has come and she stranded in
- 39:38Speaker 1: Ohio with.
- 39:39Speaker 24: This Columbus Ohio. Two weeks ago, we had Lisa Bittinger,
- 39:42Speaker 24: Miss West Virginia scheduled and frankly canceled her that morning
- 39:46Speaker 24: because it came on the same morning as the invasion
- 39:48Speaker 24: of Panama and we certainly felt compelled to delve into
- 39:51Speaker 24: that issue and did so. So we rescheduled Miss Bittinger
- 39:54Speaker 24: for this morning and she joined us from Columbus, Ohio.
- 39:56Speaker 24: We're going to bring her online in.
- 39:57Speaker 16: Just a minute. But like anything that's new, Chris, it
- 40:00Speaker 16: was really difficult because we hadn't done it before, so
- 40:04Speaker 16: there was just a lot of unknowns, a lot of
- 40:06Speaker 16: problems to work through. We weren't quite ready when we
- 40:10Speaker 16: when we actually signed on. So I remember thinking, and
- 40:13Speaker 16: this is me that okay, we've just started, but boy,
- 40:17Speaker 16: there's a lot that has to be done to ensure
- 40:20Speaker 16: that we can pull this off.
- 40:21Speaker 22: But that work was done and the results over time
- 40:24Speaker 22: were noticeable.
- 40:25Speaker 12: You know, I knew there was a niche for it.
- 40:27Speaker 12: I knew there was a need for it, and I
- 40:28Speaker 12: mean it was very quickly. I could see, you know,
- 40:32Speaker 12: within four or five months after launching it. You know,
- 40:36Speaker 12: we were getting really good reviews from our affiliates. They
- 40:38Speaker 12: were very happy.
- 40:40Speaker 9: You know.
- 40:41Speaker 12: They loved the fact that they had they could get
- 40:43Speaker 12: network news now. They loved the fact they were getting
- 40:45Speaker 12: local news. The quality was studio perfect, which was you
- 40:50Speaker 12: know that it was a huge change.
- 40:51Speaker 20: Over one hundred and thirty pieces of legislation passed during
- 40:54Speaker 20: the late hours of this year's legislative session in Charleston.
- 40:57Speaker 12: I'm George Manahan for Metro New.
- 40:59Speaker 24: You've got to be disappointed and probably still shocked over
- 41:02Speaker 24: what happened, are you.
- 41:03Speaker 15: Oh yeah, telling him, you know, terribly disappointed. And it's
- 41:07Speaker 15: not that I'm a thumbsucker or a powder or anything
- 41:09Speaker 15: like that. You know, I've been coaching twenty years and
- 41:12Speaker 15: in that span of time, I've lost my share of games.
- 41:15Speaker 15: But to me, there's a difference between losing and giving
- 41:18Speaker 15: it away. And I felt on Saturday we gave it away.
- 41:21Speaker 22: So Bobby Huggins in this case, has left Kansas State
- 41:24Speaker 22: and is returning to Morgantown to coach the Mountaineers.
- 41:28Speaker 7: A tremendous individual honor for WVU freshman second baseman Jed Jerko.
- 41:33Speaker 7: Jerko has taken the lead by storm in his first
- 41:36Speaker 7: season in a Mountaineer uniform. He was named the Conference
- 41:39Speaker 7: Rookie of the Year. Jerko is currently hitting four eleven
- 41:42Speaker 7: on the season heading into postseason play.
- 41:45Speaker 4: They get it into CJ.
- 41:46Speaker 24: Burks three seconds, two seconds, one second.
- 41:49Speaker 4: He launches it.
- 41:50Speaker 16: Good if it goes no.
- 41:51Speaker 22: I'm the hucking Redscans have upset the number three seed
- 41:56Speaker 22: Hedgesville Eagles.
- 41:57Speaker 14: Breaking story concerning a mine explosion in southern West Virginia.
- 42:02Speaker 14: It happened at about three thirty this afternoon at a
- 42:05Speaker 14: Massy owned coal mine, is Performance Coal Company's Upper Branch
- 42:09Speaker 14: mine on the Raleigh Boom County line near Whitesville and
- 42:12Speaker 14: Monck Coal We have confirmed that six miners have died
- 42:16Speaker 14: in this explosion and twenty one miners remain unaccounted.
- 42:19Speaker 22: For West Virginia Metro News, I'm Chris Lawrence. Two of
- 42:23Speaker 22: the biggest stories in West Virginia history this morning, one
- 42:27Speaker 22: of euphoria, one of anguish. The vigil continues this hour
- 42:31Speaker 22: in the Upshire County community of Tollmansville as desperate relative
- 42:34Speaker 22: as a wait word on the fate of thirteen coal
- 42:36Speaker 22: miners trapped in the Sego mine. It's been twenty four
- 42:39Speaker 22: hours since an explosion rocked the shaft of that drift
- 42:41Speaker 22: mine operated by International Coal Group.
- 42:44Speaker 12: I am very very hopeful.
- 42:45Speaker 25: I know we have the best teams, we have the
- 42:47Speaker 25: best equipment. These are the same people that help those
- 42:52Speaker 25: in Pennsylvanian. I have very much hold These are strong miners.
- 42:57Speaker 25: They're family down there, and they're going to take care
- 42:59Speaker 25: of each other.
- 43:00Speaker 22: And I have a lot of hole that is amber helms.
- 43:01Speaker 22: Her father is one of those trapped inside. Rescue crews
- 43:04Speaker 22: that managed to get ninety two hundred feet into the
- 43:06Speaker 22: mine and are drilling on a hole to reach the
- 43:09Speaker 22: area where the miners are believed to be trapped. Now
- 43:12Speaker 22: onto the other top story of the morning. The West
- 43:16Speaker 22: Virginia Mountaineers broke through last night in Atlanta, defeating the
- 43:20Speaker 22: Georgia Bulldogs and the Sugar Bowl thirty eight to thirty five.
- 43:23Speaker 26: The Mountaineers go into victory formation. Rich Rodrigez has just
- 43:28Speaker 26: been given a Gatorade back. Play clock is down to
- 43:31Speaker 26: eight game clock inside of forty. Pat White under center
- 43:36Speaker 26: takes the snap takes a knee and Georgia is defenseless.
- 43:40Speaker 22: Tonicaridi with a final call early this morning on the
- 43:43Speaker 22: Mountaineer Sports Network again the final score of West Virginia
- 43:46Speaker 22: thirty eight Georgia thirty five. You're listening to Metro News
- 43:50Speaker 22: for twenty years, the voice of West Virginia.
- 43:53Speaker 16: One of the biggest reasons that I believe that Metro
- 43:55Speaker 16: News has been successful over forty years is not only
- 43:57Speaker 16: the quality of the salespeople and the marketing people, but
- 44:00Speaker 16: of the news and sports people. And the news and
- 44:03Speaker 16: sports people yourself included, Jeff, everybody else have shown up
- 44:08Speaker 16: every day saying we're going to be good today and
- 44:12Speaker 16: as we were yesterday and as we will be tomorrow.
- 44:15Speaker 16: So there's been a quality consistency over the years that
- 44:18Speaker 16: I think has been integral to the network's success.
- 44:21Speaker 12: You know what really made metrin is I think what
- 44:24Speaker 12: it is is just the absolute incredible quality of the
- 44:27Speaker 12: staff and the longevity of the staff. There are very
- 44:30Speaker 12: few radio companies that have ever existed that have had
- 44:35Speaker 12: some of the incredible longevity in people that we have,
- 44:39Speaker 12: Like you've been there for thirty five years, Chris, the
- 44:42Speaker 12: Jeff Jenkins has been there, you know, the same length.
- 44:45Speaker 12: And Tony Kreedy's been over forty years, the Hoppy Kerchival
- 44:49Speaker 12: almost fifty years. It's amazing, It is honestly amazing just
- 44:56Speaker 12: the kind of people that were involved in this, to
- 44:59Speaker 12: Kyle Wigg, to Travis Joeses, all of the newspeople. It's
- 45:03Speaker 12: been a you know, it's just been a beautiful group
- 45:06Speaker 12: of people that have stayed together. And I think that's
- 45:09Speaker 12: what's made it really special.
- 45:11Speaker 11: By your satellite, this is the Metro News Radio Network.
- 45:15Speaker 22: I'm Chris Lawrence. I'm Metro News for forty years, the
- 45:19Speaker 22: voice of West Virginia.
- 45:20Speaker 4: I'll tell you what as somebody who's been employed here
- 45:23Speaker 4: for the last five years, though, that brings back a
- 45:27Speaker 4: lot of memories, a lot of those voices, a lot
- 45:29Speaker 4: of those sounds. It's nine to fifty two. But Dave
- 45:31Speaker 4: Allen showing five any line brode to you part by

- 45:43Speaker 4: Back after this on the Voice to Charleston, WCCHS brought
