- 0:07Hi everybody and welcome back to the Elon Musk podcast where we
- 0:10delve into the fascinating world of one of the most influential
- 0:13figures of our time. And in today's episode, we're
- 0:16unpacking, the recent Pew research, study that reveals a
- 0:20surprising Trend Among Us adult Twitter users since Elon musk's
- 0:25take over his Twitter. Seen a mass Exodus or is there
- 0:29more to this story? Explore the data, the debates in
- 0:33the implications, for the future of the social media Giant in
- 0:37this episode. Now, in a recent study conducted
- 0:40by the Pew Research Center, it's a surprising Trend.
- 0:45It significant number of us adults are taking extended
- 0:49breaks from Twitter. This Revelation has sparked a
- 0:52flurry of speculation and debate with many pointing fingers at
- 0:56Elon Musk who took over the social media Giant in October of
- 0:592022. The data doesn't necessarily
- 1:03implicate musk's leadership as the primary cause for this
- 1:06phenomenon, the Pew, study conducted over a week in March
- 1:11revealed that 60% of u.s. adult Twitter users have taken a
- 1:14Hiatus from the platform for several weeks or more in the
- 1:17past year. And given that musk's tenure at
- 1:20Twitter is only spanned six months, it's unclear whether his
- 1:24influence has had any significant impact on this trend
- 1:28and without historical data for comparison.
- 1:31It's difficult to determine whether this pattern of
- 1:33prolonged breaks is a new development or a long-standing
- 1:36habit among Twitter users. Now interestingly the data
- 1:40suggests that Twitter, unlike metas social media apps, which
- 1:44boasts three point zero two billion.
- 1:47Daily active users hasn't managed to create an addictive
- 1:51platform. That users feel compelled to
- 1:53engage with daily. Some Twitter users are avoiding
- 1:56the app for extended periods, according to P use data, which
- 2:00is collected from over. Ten thousand people.
- 2:03Now, a data analysis of this deeper Trend reveals that those
- 2:08most likely to take a break from Twitter, include women and black
- 2:11users. And Pew, study found that 69
- 2:14percent of women at 67 percent of black users reported taking a
- 2:19break from Twitter in the past year, as compared to 54 percent
- 2:23of men and sixty percent of white users, and 54 percent of
- 2:27Hispanic users. In the survey data didn't
- 2:30include in Enough Asian-American.
- 2:32Twitter users to provide a detailed analysis.
- 2:36This trend suggests the factor is such as politics or rage
- 2:40which showed no significant differences, aren't the primary
- 2:43reasons, people are stepping away from Twitter instead, the
- 2:46data points, a demographics that have historically face the most
- 2:49harassment on the platform according to Prior analysis and
- 2:53reports including those from Amnesty International.
- 2:56Now, however, the Pew Research Center study doesn't
- 3:00conclusively linked. This trend to musk's leadership
- 3:03study examines data from the past.
- 3:06Months not specifically comparing usage before and after
- 3:09musk's take over, if anything these findings could shed light
- 3:13on why Twitter has struggled to gain traction, compared to its
- 3:15social media peers and despite its evolving policies aimed at
- 3:19curbing. Abuse, Twitter has yet to fully
- 3:22address. The issue.
- 3:24Now, in a separate study Pew, explored Twitter's potential
- 3:28future by asking current and recent users about their
- 3:31likelihood of using the platform a year.
- 3:34From now while 40%. Ascent of respondents, said they
- 3:37were extremely or very likely to continue using Twitter.
- 3:41The concerning 25% of current and recent users indicated.
- 3:46They were not very likely or not at all.
- 3:49Likely to be using the app in a year's time and the demographics
- 3:53for the prior survey held up in this context with men, more
- 3:57likely than women to say, they will likely use the platform a
- 4:01year from now, 47 percent versus 31% Pew.
- 4:05Also found a The divide with Republican or republican-leaning
- 4:08users more likely than Democrats to say, they'll use the site a
- 4:12year, from now, 45 percent versus 36% now.
- 4:18None of these findings necessarily indicate a decline
- 4:21in Twitter's active users. As we don't know how common it
- 4:24has been for users to take breaks in the past.
- 4:27However, other surveys from last year's suggest a decrease in
- 4:31user numbers for instance to study covered by BuzzFeed news.
- 4:36Suggested a nine percent drop in Twitter users from the US.
- 4:39Since musk's take over a report from similarweb indicated that
- 4:44Twitter head higher traffic in the pre mascara than in January
- 4:48of twenty. Twenty-three with visitor growth
- 4:51declining year over year from 4.7 percent in November.
- 4:56Twenty twenty two. Two - two percent in January of
- 5:00twenty twenty-three musk. However, has disputed these
- 5:04claims in November Asserted that Twitter usage was at an all-time
- 5:08high. Well, recently data from App.
- 5:11Topia seem to support musk statement showing that Twitter
- 5:14daily users Grew From 229 million and quarter.
- 5:17One of 2022, the two hundred and forty six point, eight million
- 5:21and average. Since October 22, 22 as reported
- 5:25by Digi day in April. Now, this equates to a mean
- 5:30average increase of 1.3 million new users every month.
- 5:34However, This data didn't break down the numbers by country, and
- 5:38it's worth noting that the u.s. is Twitter's largest market.
- 5:43So what does p use data, really? Tell us, it doesn't necessarily
- 5:47implicate musk's policy or the general chaos at Twitter in the
- 5:51decline of the apps usage in the u.s.
- 5:53Instead, it highlights the significant challenges, the
- 5:57Twitter faces and becoming an app that users don't feel the
- 6:00need to regularly. Take a break from the data
- 6:03suggests that Twitter struggle to gain traction.
- 6:06Compared to its social media, peers may be rooted in its
- 6:09inability to effectively address and curb harassment on the
- 6:12platform. This is particularly evident in
- 6:15the demographics, most likely to take a break from Twitter,
- 6:19including women in black users groups that have historically
- 6:21face the most harassment on the platform.
- 6:24Now, the data also raises questions about Twitter's future
- 6:27with a quarter of current and recent users, indicating they're
- 6:31unlikely to be using the Apple 2 years time.
- 6:33Twitter faces a significant challenge in retaining its user
- 6:36base. This challenge is further
- 6:39compounded by the partisan divide in future, usage and
- 6:43intentions. With Republican a republican
- 6:45leading users more likely the Democrats to say, they'll use
- 6:49the site a year from now. And while it's unclear whether
- 6:51musk's takeover has directly impacted these Trends, his
- 6:55leadership, undoubtably marks, a new era for Twitter as a social
- 6:58media, giant navigates. This transition, it will be
- 7:01crucial for it to address the issues highlighted by the Pew
- 7:04study particularly around harassment and user retention.
