Weekly Dose of Phat, show number 55 for Friday May 8th, 2015.
• 0:07
[electronic music] Ah, there's no replacement for knowledge.
• 0:27
In a world of changing standards and a plethora of internet experts, that's exactly the kind of BS that launched monkeys into space and gave birth to the Weekly Dose of Phat.
• 0:41
So, let me take this opportunity to introduce to everyone out there in radio land the Gemini Prince Sven and the payload specialist Gomez. Greetings, earthlings.
• 1:00
What's up? It's the Weekly Dose of Phat. Ha. It's Phat. We, we got Gomez calling live from the remote studio out there in Westosha, and we're joined in the studio here by Mr.
• 1:11
JK Livin', who- I, uh, offer my services here as your pop culture and spiritual and colored commentary, uh, and advisors. Y- how many people do you think got your, uh, 100 year
• 1:23
Orson Welles tribute at the beginning of the show? T- two. [laughs] I o- yeah. I only got it because you did it before. Yep. [laughs] Otherwise, I, I wouldn't have. Yes. He would be- What are your-...
• 1:37
100 years old today, Orson Welles. Born in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Wow. Born- Mastered. No, uh, Kenosha. K-Town. Yep. Yep. He's got a- So, uh-... Wisconsin connection... uh, our little, uh, thespian radio thespians here.
• 1:53
This, uh, this radio show, the Weekly Dose of Phat on Phat Bike Radio is sponsored by Surly Bikes. The folks at Surly Bikes have a new troll shirt, which reminds me of, that I was actually raised by trolls.
• 2:07
You can learn more at surlybikes.com. All right, JK, what do we got on the show this week?
• 2:15
Our topic of tonight's show is all of the new wheel standards and should we drink the Kool-Aid yet, as we delve into a giant vat of beer. Weekly Dose of Phat with new things from the test lab
• 2:31
and links from all over the interwebs. Right on. I think that rolls us into the beer stop early in the show so we can [can opening] get the creative juices flowing. Yeah, or kickstarted.
• 2:47
[laughs] [sings] It was let to believe. What are you guys drinking out there? Well, today we got- It's a River West... we have in the studio Ale Asylum's Demento, which is a session IPA or American pale ale. 4.7 ABV.
• 3:04
I like the l- I liked the pretty logo, 'cause it's like a hop head with a skull and stuff and- Yeah, it does work out. And I like that 4.7, and it tastes...
• 3:13
I like, like things that I can drink for a while and taste good. Right on. This is my normal beer water. So I, I picked this up at our local, uh, beer foolery, uh, Otto's Liquor, and- Otto...
• 3:27
Otto's, yeah, surrounding the city with good beer. [laughs] Uh, I was a little confused, 'cause I thought, you know, they've got all the ratings up there and I didn't really see who was doing the rating.
• 3:37
Um, this beer rated a 96 at Otto's, which is, you know, gonna be, like, world class at Beer Advocate. However, apparently there are other rating sites out there, and they use ratebeer.com versus Beer Advocate.
• 3:50
So I think we're gonna have to keep an eye on these two different beer rating services, 'cause they're, they're- Into the octagon they go. Right. They're different enough.
• 3:59
The, the scores are different enough where I'd be like, "It's an 86 at Beer Advocate, but a 96 at Rate Beer. Why?" Why? Why? I don't understand.
• 4:07
But I, with the 86 out of 96 clicks on Beer Advocate, and the Rate Beer rated a 96 out of 36. Oh, maybe it's- I was just doing the A squared equals B squared equals C squared. Uh-huh, maybe it's just, uh, uh- [laughs]
• 4:21
... maybe it's just one of those things where the numbers are not there yet. But it seemed like a lot of the beers at Otto's were rated very high. Well, what are you- Well, the beer tastes good. Yeah, it does taste good.
• 4:31
[laughs] Well, it does. It's, um, you know, it's a session. It's a little lower in alcohol and it's, you know, I think it's very drinkable. Yeah. What are you- Right at 4.7, I could keep going.
• 4:40
What are you sucking down out there in Westosha? [laughs] Well, down here in Westosha, I actually, uh, I actually, you know, hit one of my normal gravel trails. It's been raining for the last two and a half days here.
• 4:53
Oh, and I got this beer called Delirium Tremens- Oh... after riding, like, 23 and a half miles of gravel, uh, on my cross check, man. And just actually feel like, uh, my, my cycling legs are coming back.
• 5:09
I, I can put some watts into the bike these days. D- do you have- [laughs] Do, do you have one of those- So- Do you have one of those things on your crank that measures your watts yet?
• 5:17
Did you get like a- That's what you said. [laughs] No. I- You got that thing you put on your crank. Yeah, you do. No, no, no. I have, I have, I have, you know, how much...
• 5:28
Yeah, you do, you know whether you're putting power into the pedals or whether you're just, like, going along. Anyway, so I rode some gravel, and when you ride gravel, then you gotta drink Belgian beer.
• 5:38
So I go to- [laughs]... uh, Gooseberry's there in Burlington, home of Tony, uh, what is it? God, what is the guy's name? Tony Romo. Uh, you know. Ah.
• 5:49
So I go to, to there and buy some Delirium Tremens, which Delirium Tremens has a logo. It's pink elephants. It will make you see pink elephants- It's Belgian strong ale.
• 6:02
It's like, I don't know, 800- It was, it was like-... percent alcohol and [laughs] you know- It was like eight, 8.5 or something No, nine. Nine... oh, it was a nine? Well, actually it was reduced from nine to 8.5 in 2003
• 6:16
because I think that next- What's the vintage of the bottle that you have in front of you? Well, it was launched in 1989 according to... Here's, here's something about this Rate Beer versus, uh, Beer Advocate.
• 6:26
Beer Advocate, 92, outstanding. Rate Beer, 95, so it's a lot closer on the Delirium Tremens, and there's 5,000 ratings at, at, uh, Beer Advocate on it already.
• 6:39
The larger sampling audience will have the better rating, the more, or the more accurate rating. [burps] But who the, what, what the hell do I know? I'm just out here in Westosha.
• 6:52
I was blowing that your direction, actually. [laughs] Are you, are you drinking it out of a Trappist glass or tulip- I actually, um-... or a tumbler? I, I put it in- Right on the bottle like a good boy...
• 7:04
in, in a big girl wine glass actually because I kinda got rid of all my Belgian beer glasses, but it comes to like [laughs]-- You put it in a Sex and the City wine glass?
• 7:14
So I have it in a long-stemmed, but, but, you know, you want it... It's supposed to have a nose kinda thing. Anyway, yeah, so it's... Somebody said this to me once, "Oh, that's glassphomy, right?" Glassphomy. Get it?
• 7:27
Uh-huh. Like blasphemy and glass together. Boo-ya. Yeah, that's Is that in Webster's New World Dictionary right now? It's a, that's a modern word for the- Yeah... the 21st century. It was a fat bike dude too.
• 7:40
It was, uh, it was The Beer Babes hubby that said that about some beer I was drinking out of the wrong glass, which I am also doing tonight. So cheers, boys. Cheers. Cheers. Clink. Clinkity dink.
• 7:54
[glasses clinking] So you know what? This week's Beer Buzz is sponsored by Uncle Dick's Bead Slip. You can learn all about Uncle Dick and his slip at www.uncledicksbikeshop.com.
• 8:11
You know, when I was up camping up there at Kohler Andre, I actually [laughs] ran into a couple of guys with bikes on the back of their truck, and the guy had a Uncle Dick's T-shirt on. I'm like, "Uncle Dick's, man.
• 8:23
I know Uncle Dick." He's like, "Dude, he's my next door neighbor." [laughs] Nice. Yeah. Yeah, that's, that's Wisconsin for you, eh? Very good. Yeah, when you see bike, bikes early in the season,
• 8:35
you probably know who they are. [laughs] It's true. We'll take a couple of calls right after this from our sponsor. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.

• 9:05
at LakeSmithBeardWax.AustraliaFortWorthingtonMangroveYachtSpecial. Welcome to Fat Bike Radio. Who do we have on the line? Julio.com.
• 9:24
Oh, my man. I'm drinking beer out of a- What's this?... out of a bottle, Julio. Julio, we're drinking beer. [laughs] Out of a bottle. No glass or a beer bottle. It's- Yeah, dude. Yeah, dude...
• 9:34
it's only Dementor though- Yeah... so you probably wouldn't have that big of a problem with it. So how's it going, bro? What's up? Do you know- So, Julio-... do you know the topic of today's show, Julio?
• 9:47
I think I've heard it's wheel sizes. It, it is, and we know that you've had some experience with some of them. I li- I like wheels. They go round, and I like big wheels to go around. So Julio, this week I said,
• 10:02
I said to somebody within the industry, and they did not agree with me, that a fat bike with 29 plus wheels on it, and it's because I listen to my boy Sven. You know, I'm around Sven a lot.
• 10:16
[laughs] He talks, he talks a lot of smartness in his, in his, you know... Talk about fat bikes.
• 10:24
He says that, "You know, the bike isn't designed for that size wheel, then how can it be the best bike at, at, with a different wheel size on it?"
• 10:34
[laughs] Do you think I've, like, drank the Kool-Aid too soon or, or what? No, I think I, I kinda see your point.
• 10:42
Um, you know, if you can fit the, if you can fit the 29er plus tires in a, in a fat bike frame, that doesn't always work. I'm not gonna really be able to fit it into any standard 29er frame.
• 10:51
Those tires are so much bigger, um, that I think it would really start to impact geometry.
• 10:57
Uh, where if you can stick the 27 fives in, the, the, the B pluses in, those are more in line with the, with the diameter of a, of a fat tire or, or a 26x4.
• 11:09
I think you're gonna, you know, more than likely keep a lot of the handling characteristics where if, if you put that 29 plus in there it's gonna handle, I think, quite a bit differently.
• 11:19
I mean, but, but if, but if you don't wanna buy another bike, then, you know, then you can fit a 29 plus in your fat bike, then it, it kinda gets you there. Um, I've, I've ridden on my 29 plus bike.
• 11:31
I've-- When I first built it up, I ran a pair of normal 29er tires on the bike and- Mm-hmm... while it didn't, it didn't handle bad, it lowered the bottom bracket a bit. Um- Mm-hmm...
• 11:43
and that's not what the frame was designed around, so it handled quite a bit differently than with the, the 29 plus tires that it was meant to run. Um, so I imagine the same thing would hold true with running
• 11:55
29er plus tires on a, on a fat bike. So the 27 plus, you know, seems to be the, like you said, the big Kool-Aid right now.
• 12:03
In some instances, it does make, it does make more sense if I put that on a fat bike since it's closer diameter-wise to the tire, to, to the 26x4 Mm-hmm.
• 12:14
And we were, we were told, "Hey, it's within two millimeters of a 26x4 circumference." So- Very close... or- Right... the 27.5 Very close. Yep. So, but none of us have actually made those measurements.
• 12:32
We haven't tried a B+ tire on a 29+ frame like a Krampus or your Retrotech or Steve's, uh, Gnarvester. We haven't tried even a B+ set of wheels on, on a fat bike, and I know that, that
• 12:49
I was having this discussion whether they're gonna try it, um, 'cause,
• 12:53
you know, I, I urged them to, um- My, m- my guess is, my guess is, and I've thought about this since the 27.5 seems to be kicking off and, and there's a possibility the 20, the 29+ won't, even though there's enough tires out there where I'm not overly concerned about it.
• 13:06
But I, I've thought about, you know, I could easily put a pair of B+ tires on my Retrotech, but it, it's gonna ri- ride similar to when I ran just the normal 29er tires on it. Right. Um. Right.
• 13:18
Which would lower the bottom bracket and it, um, play with the steering a little bit. Yeah. Those pedal strikes and a little more wag in the, in the... Yeah.
• 13:28
Yeah, it didn't, it didn't, it didn't- I, I, I see what you're saying... it didn't, it didn't ride how the bike was designed. Those numbers, those geometry numbers were, were all tweaked for 29+.
• 13:36
Um- So you fall in the same, the same school that Sven is in, that the bike is designed to run one wheel size, and that is what it's going to be the best at. Yeah, most definitely. Well, I think- Most definitely...
• 13:52
I, I partially, I partially agree with that. I partially... I think a fat bike with a 26.4, if, if the 20, if the B+ is truly the same diameter, then
• 14:02
you may not notice the difference besides the, the tire won't be as wide. Um- Right...
• 14:07
but that's not huge A two millimeter difference, you know, you could set your sag, you could set your wheel pressure, your tire pressure- Yeah... enough to lower that enough that you'd never even notice it.
• 14:17
It's not the, the, the huge difference that the 29+ is, where it's a significantly bigger around tire. Uh, so when you're using- Right. Yeah...
• 14:25
that on a bike designed as a fat bike, yeah, you, you're gonna get, you know, some of the, some of the p- pros of it, but the cons of it are the bike wasn't designed for that large a wheel.
• 14:34
Uh, Julio- If I want- We've got another caller on the line. Do you wanna, do you wanna hang out for a second and we'll see if we can get somebody else to, uh, give us an opinion on this wheel size thing? Sure.
• 14:46
I'm, I'm good with that. All right. You guys have a good evening. Welcome to the radio program, caller. Hello? Who do we have on the line there? Hello? Hello. Hello. Hi. [laughs] This is Colin and Sam.
• 15:04
Dude. In the car. [laughs] Can you, can you guys- Downtown ether. Just living directly outside- Can you guys still hear me?... of the Capitol. Yeah, I hear you, Joe. Am I yelling loud enough? Colin Ford.
• 15:17
Gomez, why don't you take- We're, we're, uh- Why don't you talk to Colin so that we don't get all confused here on who's talking to who. Take it away with Mr. Colin Ford. So Colin,
• 15:27
what do you think of all these crazy fricking wheel sizes that are out there? Uh- Give us the real dope, yo. Uh, the real dope is, uh, ride your bike and shut the fuck up. [laughs] Love that, dude.
• 15:44
Oh, I love that. Wow, you might have just... You, you might actually be, like, an apostle of Jim. Maybe, maybe you can join him- Well, you probably will... at the top of the mountain. [laughs] Ride your bike. Yeah, man.
• 16:00
You know what I heard you say? Do exactly the same thing I did with my mountain bike. In that discussion that I mentioned earlier, a rad bike is a rad bike.
• 16:07
It doesn't matter if it's the newest thing or whether it's just, like, the best of what it was. The best 26x4 fat bike is still a fricking rad bike that you will have more fun and more adventure and great times riding.
• 16:25
Hey, Colin. How's it going? Hey, Paul. Great. How you doing? Great. Are you, uh, are you out there with Sam and Jim right now? Oh, yeah, man.
• 16:34
We're sitting in the car lubricating our brain cells with, uh, tetrahydrocannabinol. Nice. Incredible. Lucky people. So have, have you been riding, uh, local trails? Oh, yeah, it's m- I have.
• 16:51
Um, I've been out to Moab twice since I moved here. Uh, I've been ri- I rode a downhill bike, like a four real fucking downhill bike, and that blew my mind. [laughs] Right on.
• 17:08
Um, that was a 26-inch bike and it shredded faster downhill than I've ever gone on anything before, so whatever. You know, there's a trail that I can take light rail to from my house, which is pretty sweet, so I do that.
• 17:24
Um, it's been raining here the past week. Is that your, is that your new boyfriend's name, Light Rail? [laughs] Oh, God. Really?
• 17:39
[laughs] I know. It was a joke, man. [laughs] I know, man. It's pretty funny, man. [laughs] Uh, so no, the trails out here are awesome.
• 17:57
I've ridden them on the Matacycles fat bike. I got to pay a visit to Mr. David Glover. Uh, he rides a 39 pound ice cream truck and rips it, so everyone else doesn't have an excuse
• 18:14
Straight up, that dude sends me pictures that makes me wanna take out life insurance on him. [laughs] But did, uh, Colin, did Sam give you a report on the new, uh, Ty Ganarvester yet?
• 18:29
No, it's, uh, it's, it's gonna get its debut sometime in tomorrow. Oh, excellent. All right. Yeah, it was a, a fresh build as it left the shop to head out that way, so I'm anxious to see how it goes.
• 18:43
We'll let you know if we break that fucker off. [laughs] Uh. [laughs] Right. All right. Um, back to the topic, though. Wheel sizes. I've been riding my 29er, my straight up 29er.
• 18:57
I know it's not a fat bike, but I've been riding that the most, mostly because it rolls, but it's awesome. It goes fast. It does what I want it to do.
• 19:08
Uh, the 27.5+ thing, the Rocky Mountain Bike, looks like an awesome bike. Uh, but I'm
• 19:18
confident that if you wanna just ride trails, like, just ride trails, not go on a giant bike packing trip, which you could do, but, like, the 27.5+, the 29+, I think is more ideal
• 19:34
on a rigid bike over a long, kinda slightly bumpy, while out riding kind of idea. That's my two cents.
• 19:49
[laughs] Well- So on your 29er, if you could have the same ride, but just have a little more girth and a little more traction, how do you think that, that...
• 20:05
'Cause in theory, that's what 20- You're going to go faster downhill, yes or no? Hmm. I, I'm saying, like, clean things uphill and downhill that you couldn't with less volume tire.
• 20:22
In theory, now. This, we're just, we're, we're in, we're, we're in hypothetical land. Ooh. [laughs] We're in scary bike hypothetical land. We're in, we're in the bikes we haven't ridden yet department. Right. Uh- Oh.
• 20:37
Oh, well then let's shut up. Let's shut up and ride our bikes. Oh, let's not even talk about it if that's the case. [laughs] What just happened? Oh, and there goes, um, oh, there goes fucking Khalil
• 20:53
with 780s on his road bike. Yeah, those are wild. Anyways, uh- I think B+ makes a lot of sense... I think that I can, like, the traction you notice, but at the end of the day, like, do you save weight
• 21:10
with less rotational weight of a 29er? Mm-hmm. It would be a 29er wheel would be lighter than a B+ wheel. Right. Guitar Ted, in one of our links today- He's got-... talked about that.
• 21:22
He actually, like, already built up a set of wheels and tried it on his Fargo, and he's like, "Well, the B+ wheel is heavier than his standard, you know, 2.4 wide 29er, uh, tire."
• 21:38
Yeah, the thing is, like, you gotta ride what you're gonna ride. There's no one bike that I've ridden that said, that said, "Oh, I can ride shit I've never ridden before."
• 21:47
Except for maybe with the downhill bike because the downhill bike you can just, like, it's got eight inches of travel, like, you could crazy shit, but, you know.
• 21:57
I don't know, kind of the Krampus or maybe the Moot- or maybe the Ice Cream Truck for you. Didn't that just open up, like- Stop opening up. Stop opening up... The Ice Cream Truck is
• 22:11
able to do things that no other bike can though. Snow. You know? And same with any other five-inch fat bike, really. You can ride single track out here in the snow. People do it all the time. Fucking Reeve is killing it.
• 22:25
Yeah. [laughs] That's really what we're talking about is 27.5+ may be able... If you're gonna do the fucking, uh, Tour Divide, when somebody's gonna do it on 27.5+, probably this year. Yeah. Yeah. Jim, talk.
• 22:42
I'm tired of talking. [laughs] You can make it worth it. Top of the hill. Beer. Make all the frames compatible. Oh, beer stop.
• 22:53
Jim says you, you should make the, all the fra- Jim wants all the frames compatible for 27.5+ and 29.
• 23:03
But, you know, go back to that for a second, Colin, 'cause making the frames compatible isn't the, it's not the issue to make the tires fit.
• 23:10
The issue is to make the outer diameter of the tire close enough that it's not gonna change the geometry significantly when you swap widths of tire. So, you know- Well, yeah...
• 23:23
I mean, the, solving the problem of fitting the tires on is an easy problem to solve, but is that, you know, trying to do a one size fits all bike, I, it just, I, I haven't noticed it working when I put a, a, a 29+ tire on a d- bike that was designed for a four-inch fat bike tire.
• 23:38
It's, it changes it pretty significantly, at least for me. Right. That's why we're going from a B+ to a 29, 'cause the outer diameter is very similar. Right.
• 23:48
For, and you're talking just a standard 29 or not a 29+, right? Right. Ah, right. A 29+ would be comparable to a 4.8 tire. Right. Right. Right. Yep. Now we're on the same page.
• 24:01
So, they're like different categories of comparable tires. So should I drink the Kool-Aid yet? [laughs] Oh, wait, I just poured a new beer. That is Kool-Aid. Cheers, boys. Cheers, boys So how about, how about Sam D?
• 24:19
What's Sam D got to say about the world? [laughs] The wild world of wheel sizes. Uh, the world is good for Sam D. That's about all I, you know, about one way I would put it.
• 24:34
Well, you're on your second 29er+ bike, dude. Yes, I am. How do you feel... Lay down on, on my therapist couch and tell Uncle Gomez how you feel about 26.5 tires.
• 24:51
Or 27.5 even. Don't confuse him with this 26.5- [laughs] Oh, God.... sorcery you're trying to throw in my goddamn view. That was a, that was a trick, that was a trick question.
• 25:01
[laughs] I actually wanted to say- Well, you got me before... how do you, how do you feel about your mother? I asked 27.5 [laughs] tires. Oh, my Lord. Well, I certainly can say I approve of the 29+ tires.
• 25:19
And how's that new Narv star treating you? Well, I would- Went from a 10... I would be much better to tell you after I've actually ridden it on some decent trail.
• 25:31
Sadly, we're just arriving here today, and, uh, I expect to have a lot more to say, uh, very soon on the topic. On the 'morrow. Yes, on the 'morrow. All right.
• 25:41
Hey, guys, are you, are you, uh, are you taking I-70 on the way back by any chance? We're taking both. We're... That'll get us out to Fruita. Ah.
• 25:50
I'm talking about coming back from, coming back from Denver through Kansas. There's a super kickass trail right in the middle of Kansas that would be awesome for you guys to roll if you happen to come back that way.
• 26:03
What the hell? And there's, and there's one in Kansas City too, guys. Yeah, right at, uh, Wilson Lake in the middle of Kansas. It's an IMBA Epic trail, and, uh, goes around the Wilson Lake reservoir. It's super.
• 26:13
You guys would love it on, on 29+ bikes. I guarantee. That trail's called Landoll. It's on the Missouri side of the Kansas City, uh, I-70 corridor, and they have trails there called Swedish Erotica and The Family Trail.
• 26:30
And The Family Trail [laughs] has stuff that will just definitely- Swedish, Swedish, how can I... Swedish, you take a right or a left?... freak you out.
• 26:38
[laughs] They're, they're not actually connected, but The Family Trail was, like, the hardest freaking crazy most technical trail out there. I cried like a baby. The Swedish Erotica? Yeah. Oh, funny.
• 26:54
That's funny. Those guys are funny, those KC dudes. Shout out to my buddy, uh, uh, uh, uh, out there, uh, Bad Carlson and, uh, uh, uh, all my other homies from KC. You got one of the K- That's all I gotta say...
• 27:11
you got one of the KC crew out there in, uh, Denver, uh, Fort Collins, uh, Burnsy. Was he a, he was a KC crew guy. Oh, yeah. For sure. What's his- Yeah, we might try and swing up and see Adam Blake.
• 27:23
So if you go to Fort Collins, is it just a big fort with a bunch of other Collins? [laughs] Colin. [laughs] That's the best question ever. And on that note, we've got a show to do here.
• 27:41
Yeah. Do you guys wanna hang out? We're gonna do the weekly dose of fat. [laughs] Mike, you're funny. [laughs] It just- Mike... it just got there... you're funny.

You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio. This is Ned Overland, and I listen to the weekly dose of fat on Fat Bike Radio. Hey, welcome back to the radio program.
• 28:09
Here's Sven with more about new wheel sizes and how it's affected his Zodiac. Cripes, I don't even know what to think now with all, all that banter about wheel sizes.
• 28:22
[laughs] Uh, uh, I'm, I, I think it's a fun time to be trying new stuff out, you know? Just, uh, just this week since it was kinda rainy out, I, I put on some five-inch
• 28:33
Dillinger 5s on my 50 millimeter rims on my trail bike, and actually look really cool on there. [laughs] It's been raining though, so I haven't ridden it, just like 27+.
• 28:43
I haven't really ridden it much except out at Sea Otter mostly, so I'm excited for what's to come- Born to be... because it gives us stuff to talk about for the next several months. [laughs] Yeah, exactly.
• 28:57
I, I have actually been, I have got a nice couple of rides in on the new Dirt Wizard 29+ tire.
• 29:05
It's, uh, definitely a tire that if I were going to the roughest, like, the place that I would put the most knobbiest, burliest tire on, like, I would say Fruita, Moab type of riding, I would put that tire on my Krampus to make that trip.
• 29:26
  This, this tire is, uh,
• 29:29
not quite as big as, as a Gnard, but super aggressive knobs that just have shoulders that stick out and at one point, well, at several points during the ride when I rode, rode New Fane up in, uh,
• 29:46
the Northern Kettle Moraine State Forest, um- That's where my daughter- Uh, Blue Blaze... that's where, that's where my daughter chipped her tooth falling off her mountain bike. Poor girl. [laughs] Well, there you go.
• 29:58
Yeah. It... La Baby has a lot of, uh, a, a lot of roots. Well, I'm telling you, I screamed out loud. The Krampus just does this naturally anyway. It kind of, like, takes you
• 30:11
to the very edge of the trail because it has such momentum and those big wheels just get going and it's like
• 30:21
And it, and it has such a confidence-inspiring geometry, so that front wheel's out in front of you and you just think you can take on anything at any speed.
• 30:29
So you just start kinda ignoring your brake spit and just ripping it. And, uh, several times I was like, "Ah!" screaming out loud, and at one point the tire...
• 30:41
Now a lot of people know about auto steer, well these, these tires are actually auto brak, so- [laughs] I, one of the- Ah. What, what do you think about the rolling, uh, rolling resistance versus the, the Nard?
• 30:57
I don't know, or I, I don't know whether I can compare it to the Nard fairly, but all I know is that it is not as hard to push this tire as I thought it would be.
• 31:11
Those ramped knobs, and I mounted both of them kind of intuitively the way that I would run any 29er or fat bike tire with not necessarily the things set up for the ultimate climbing traction, 'cause contact pitch, patch is so big that you don't really need that.
• 31:29
So the ramps are set up to roll easy. Rolls very much easier than you think it would when you look at how aggressive the knobs are on the tire because of those ramped knobs. And, uh, this is a single track tire, man.
• 31:43
This thing is, thing is confidence-inspiring and just I think I would take on, you know, decomposed granite, sandstone, all of the, the tough stuff that tires
• 31:57
attack, Slickrock at Moab, just like I think it would be like a killer tire- Cool... for that out west riding. So I'm kinda psyched.
• 32:07
I, I, I'm happy that, that this tire made it to the, to the test facility and that, ha, it got on my bike first. But I think that we'll be sending these out.
• 32:19
[laughs] I, I al- I think we'll be- I just ordered a set up just through the shop just 'cause I wanna try them out too, so they're just, uh, they're just waiting to get mounted up on my bike.
• 32:27
I just have to pull it out and throw them on there. Oh, that's what he said. Well, I think we should send them out to somebody with, with a 29 plus bike that, that, uh, will, you know, do them justice.
• 32:38
Maybe somebody, uh, who's out in the Rocky Mountains that rides that c- can, uh, give us a report on them. Yeah. Send them, send them to whomever out that way.
• 32:48
You know, like there's a bunch of different tire standards out there, there's a bunch of different hub standards too, and, uh,
• 32:54
and our friends over at Paul Component Engineering came up with a very limited edition hub using the SRAM XD driver. Apparently they just had a few lying [laughs] around the shop, kind of a- according to the story.
• 33:06
Uh, but they did a limited edition 197 by 12 hub with that XD driver and, uh, apparently there's not gonna be very many.
• 33:13
They made a few for their friends and family and let a few lucky folks have the opportunity to snag one of those Paul hubs. Beer with a 25 year anniversary Paul beer opener and brake wrench. As is- Yeah... Mr.
• 33:30
JK Living has this very same. In the- Don't you see it in front of the microphone? Can you see it through the radio station? [laughs] I do. Suck my blue, it sucks, sucks. Yeah, Paul's a good, cool cat and- Mm-hmm...
• 33:46
seriously try and get and do some beach riding out either... I'm, I'm thinking right before,
• 33:53
right before or right after Interbike, going to Washington and going out there and meeting our bud Wade who will have all of the rides set up with
• 34:07
vittles and camp sites and I think that, that sounds like a ready-made fun good times. Wouldn't you say there, Simon? Uh, that, that's a possibility.
• 34:18
I do wanna get to that Lost Coast section but, uh, you know, there's a lot of places I wanna get to, so the one that's the easiest for Sven to go to is the one, [laughs] the one he's gonna go to.
• 34:27
[laughs] The one that is, has the best vittles and easiest ingress and egress for this particular trip. Well, you know, uh, my buddy, uh, Dean Goodrich sent us the date for the Sandbox Showdown.
• 34:44
We've kind of transitioned into links now. That was- Should we have some sort of-... almost seamless. My God. Should we have some sort of link fanfare? Could, uh... Let me just... Here come the links, links, links.
• 34:59
Links, links, links. Links. [laughs] The missing link. Yeah. Boy, I love the internet when it, uh, just goes all Max Headroom on you. Yeah, right, right.
• 35:14
Here's the meta, meta, meta, K, K, Asian, T, K, K, K, K, K in the fa- a, a, a, a. All right. [laughs] Does that sound weird? Uh- Yeah. Not as- Well, uh-...
• 35:30
not as weird as, uh, some stuff that's coming over the air. So we got links is what we're talking about. Yeah, you guys should do the links like I did them in the r- R- r- re- re- re- read the links. Re- uh, Max reboot?
• 35:46
Yep. You got your, uh, your fat biking in Italy, uh, video in the, in the, in the Montanas. Looking for the cold vein. I'm not really sure what it was. It, it, it's just ver- the vistas, it just looks rad.
• 36:00
It's like a lot of fun. You know where Sven wants to go? Italy. Italy? [laughs] Uh, Guitar Ted had, uh, some thoughts on Bee Wheels already. Uh, s- put some bee plus wheels on his Fargo
• 36:15
and told us what he thought about that. Right on. Thought he did. Yeah, and he's gonna be testing them long term.
• 36:22
Fat Bike Brigade was at Moab It's, it's Fat Bike Radio, ladies and gentlemen Yes Gomez, we're s- we're having some, uh, we're having some feed difficulties, so, uh, since it's kinda close to the end of the show anyway, somehow we managed to fumble through most of an hour,
• 36:38
uh, we got a few more links Welcome back to the show, ladies and gentlemen [laughs] There he is. What? Oh, you got Mike snorting now. Congratulations Holy shit I think that's the next contest.
• 36:51
Whoever can make Mike, Mike snort might win something. Hey, speaking of contests, what's happening with our, uh, framed bike contest? It's still the same thing. Winner gets a framed carbon
• 37:07
frame and fork, either a 17 or a 19, whichever, you know, size fits your bones. And, uh, second place gets a sweet pair of tires that, you know, has folding beads, all the deluxe tire, uh, accoutrement.
• 37:22
And third place gets a set of name brand. I believe these are, uh, Ginsu knives. Uh, what, what's that? Uh, yep, these- yep, they just confirmed.
• 37:33
These are Ginsu steak knives for third place, or as Sven likes to say, second loser. Right on. Well, thanks again to Surly for sponsoring the radio portion of today's broadcast.
• 37:46
We're gonna go ahead and get the hell out of here. Bye-bye. Go ride your bike. Yeah, man, ride that bike. It wants to be ridden hard. Yeah. It's gonna get up in your dress and leave a mess. Okay.
• 38:02
