- 0:00Speaker 1: I like the fact that the guys were kind of
- 0:01Speaker 1: pissed on the sidelines, and we let them get in
- 0:02Speaker 1: the end zone. You know what I'm saying? Like, I
- 0:04Speaker 1: want to play 60 minutes. Like, the officials look at
- 0:06Speaker 1: me like, why are you yelling at us about a
- 0:07Speaker 1: holding call? And I'm like, is anybody watching the Big Ten? Like,
- 0:09Speaker 1: you know what I mean? Like, we're not winning a
- 0:10Speaker 1: ton of games right now. Like, not a big win
- 0:12Speaker 1: by Michigan today. That's great. But I'm trying to teach
- 0:14Speaker 1: the guys how to win and how to finish and
- 0:16Speaker 1: all those things, you know?
- 0:17Speaker 2: Yeah, we got it done, but it was a little
- 0:20Speaker 2: sleepy there early in the second half. Coach Rule said
- 0:23Speaker 2: these guys were, we'll say the word, ticked. Wanted to
- 0:26Speaker 2: finish strong in the fourth quarter. Leads us into the
- 0:28Speaker 2: 11-10 KFAB Certified Transmission Sports Brief. It's the Husker Buzz edition.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Jim Rose back tomorrow. I'm Scott Voorhees bringing on Sean
- 0:36Speaker 2: Callahan here on Big Red Radio. Sean, respond to what
- 0:40Speaker 2: the coach just said there.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I think he wanted his team to complete and
- 0:46Speaker 3: finish four quarters. It was an odd third quarter in
- 0:49Speaker 3: that game. Yes, they were out by a lot, but
- 0:52Speaker 3: Bowling Green held the ball for 11 minutes and 37
- 0:55Speaker 3: seconds of the third quarter and made it where Nebraska
- 0:59Speaker 3: only got three possessions in that entire second half. So
- 1:02Speaker 3: I just think he was coaching his guys up and
- 1:05Speaker 3: just wanted to finish and complete that game, and that's
- 1:08Speaker 3: what coaches do.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Yeah, and it was good to see other players in
- 1:11Speaker 2: the mix there in the fourth quarter. I like T.J. Lateef.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I think he's a fantastic backup. What did you like
- 1:18Speaker 2: about what you saw from the Huskers, both offensively, defensively,
- 1:22Speaker 2: special teams, early in this game on Saturday night?
- 1:26Speaker 3: Well, Anthony Calandria, just his poise, his presence. He's now
- 1:31Speaker 3: ranked as the top quarterback on pro football focus in
- 1:33Speaker 3: terms of grade in the whole Big Ten, and he's
- 1:36Speaker 3: third in all power four. So he's putting together a
- 1:39Speaker 3: really good start to his transition year with seven touchdown
- 1:42Speaker 3: passes in two games. 497 yards passing, 88 yards rushing.
- 1:48Speaker 3: That has been impressive. Obviously, the depth the running back
- 1:51Speaker 3: has shown early. The receivers have been really solid for
- 1:54Speaker 3: Nebraska the last two weeks. On defense, I liked how
- 1:57Speaker 3: they flew around, got off the field early, forced some turnovers.
- 2:02Speaker 3: They kind of forced the issue, tipped the ball, picked
- 2:04Speaker 3: it off. scooped a fumble up and were able to
- 2:07Speaker 3: take that in the end zone. So, you know, there
- 2:09Speaker 3: are some things, you know, special teams blocked a punt.
- 2:11Speaker 3: I thought that was a real promising thing. They've only
- 2:13Speaker 3: attempted one field goal in the year, and it's only
- 2:17Speaker 3: been from, I think it's 55 yarders, so it's kind
- 2:19Speaker 3: of hard to say a lot about special teams. They
- 2:21Speaker 3: didn't punt in the game either on Saturday night. They
- 2:25Speaker 3: did have a couple holding penalties on returns, just trying
- 2:28Speaker 3: to be aggressive and set something up, but That would
- 2:31Speaker 3: be the one critique you'd be critical of on special
- 2:35Speaker 3: teams so far. But to do what they did, 56-7,
- 2:38Speaker 3: those types of games don't happen very often.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Yeah, it was good to see Calandria open it up
- 2:44Speaker 2: and really air it out as well. Some good long balls.
- 2:47Speaker 2: I don't know. There are different things going on with
- 2:51Speaker 2: officiating this year. Apparently when a game is over, you
- 2:54Speaker 2: can still add one second back on the clock, and
- 2:56Speaker 2: a 50-50 ball no longer goes to the offense. The
- 3:00Speaker 2: interception there by Calandria I thought should have been a
- 3:02Speaker 2: catch for Ja'Cory Barney, but referees saw it differently.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Yeah, it was one of those deals. I think the
- 3:08Speaker 3: replay kind of covered up what they needed to see
- 3:12Speaker 3: to the point where the call on the field was
- 3:16Speaker 3: what they had to go with there. But you're right.
- 3:18Speaker 3: It's hard to call that. That's the only turnover Nebraska's
- 3:21Speaker 3: had all year with that play. It's really hard to
- 3:24Speaker 3: be critical of that turnover because it just didn't feel
- 3:26Speaker 3: like a traditional turnover.
- 3:27Speaker 2: No.
- 3:28Speaker 3: You know, Calandria, he's not really thrown a pick or
- 3:32Speaker 3: come close to throwing a pick this year. Other than that,
- 3:34Speaker 3: it was called an interception, but it looked more like
- 3:37Speaker 3: just a bang-bang play that got tied up and the
- 3:40Speaker 3: officials stuck with it. But, you know, that was, again,
- 3:42Speaker 3: adversity Nebraska had to overcome on the first series of
- 3:46Speaker 3: the game. Last week before, they gave up the huge
- 3:49Speaker 3: play to start the Ohio game, and this week on
- 3:51Speaker 3: their drive, Nebraska gets a turnover. So, I liked how
- 3:55Speaker 3: they responded this week as well with the turnover where
- 3:59Speaker 3: they were able to kind of bounce back and put
- 4:02Speaker 3: their foot on it.
- 4:03Speaker 2: We've got another game this Saturday against a team where
- 4:06Speaker 2: we should be able to impose our will. What are
- 4:08Speaker 2: some things that you want to see Nebraska be a
- 4:11Speaker 2: little sharper on as we get through North Dakota and
- 4:14Speaker 2: then on to the Big Ten season?
- 4:17Speaker 3: Yeah, North Dakota will actually be more challenging. I think
- 4:20Speaker 3: he could be of the three games, one of the
- 4:21Speaker 3: more challenging ones. Their quarterback, Jerry Kaminsky, is an NFL prospect.
- 4:29Speaker 3: They've got a left tackle, Trace Thadden from Millard West,
- 4:32Speaker 3: who's an NFL prospect. They're a top-10 FCS team, so
- 4:37Speaker 3: they are putting up a lot of points. They're going
- 4:39Speaker 3: to be a test for Nebraska's defense this week. Because
- 4:43Speaker 3: Kaminsky is just a hard guy to get to because
- 4:46Speaker 3: he's got a good offensive line. He's thrown for 778
- 4:49Speaker 3: yards in three games. So this will be a great
- 4:52Speaker 3: week three test with where this team is at. I
- 4:56Speaker 3: think it's a much better team than Bowling Green and
- 4:59Speaker 3: probably more on the level of what Ohio was week one.
- 5:02Speaker 3: So you've got to come out and start strong because
- 5:05Speaker 3: this is a team that thinks they can come in
- 5:07Speaker 3: and beat Nebraska. I mean, they're going to come in.
- 5:09Speaker 3: I'm ready to roll as an FCS team that is
- 5:12Speaker 3: in contention to win the national title.
- 5:14Speaker 1: All right, great.
- 5:14Speaker 2: We'll see him Saturday night at 6.15 and talk with
- 5:17Speaker 2: you throughout the week. Of course, keys to the game
- 5:19Speaker 2: coming up on Friday, and Jim will be with you
- 5:21Speaker 2: starting tomorrow for the rest of the week. Sean, thank
- 5:23Speaker 2: you very much. Have a great rest of your rainy day.
- 5:27Speaker 3: All right, thanks, guys.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Here on Big Red Radio, that's our Husker insider Sean
- 5:31Speaker 2: Callahan with the Husker Buzz.
